This is probably going to piss a lot of people off.
But one of the most terminally online (particularly terminally on Twitter) takes I’ve ever seen in a while is “if this extremely problematic creator says your on their side politically if you consume their work (even if you haven’t and refuse to give them money) than you ARE on their side.”
No. Just… No.
I’m not supporting Anne Rice’s attempts to destroy fanfiction as we know it because I watch a secondhand dvd of Interview With A Vampire I got in a bargain bin every Halloween. I do not like 90% of Stephanie Myers opinions, but I’m still gonna reblog a twilight meme. The examples of messed up, morally disgusting creators are practically infinite. Not to mention the hundreds upon hundreds of films we all watch with actors who would consider us fans who support their causes. Even though they’re objectively fucked up and wrong. Just because we watched a movie with them in it. Observation (with no monetary gain) does NOT equal solidarity.
Just to be clear and thorough. This tactic does not work as well for streaming services for books or movies, musicians (if you use music streaming), or internet celebrities since the act of watching their content is an act of solidarity since the monetization of their content happens through ads and membership fees. Which is why people SHOULD NOT watch the potential Harry Potter Netflix series ever at all. OR listen to Rowling’s books on Audible, or watch the movies on any streaming platform!
I’m trans, and I hate JK Rowling, I hated her before I knew I was trans because she hates trans people and gender essentialism sucks for everybody. I hope her bullshit Netflix series flops because she doesn’t deserve anymore monetary fuel for her TERF machine. She doesn’t deserve another goddamn dime from anybody and she’s certainly not going to be getting it from me.
Am I going to set fire to the beat up copy of the Sorcerer’s Stone I’ve had since I was eight years old because it was one of the few things standing between me and the traumatizing shit that was going on in my life at the time? No.
I’m not gonna just get rid of any other sentimental piece of HP media that I’ve had since before I could buy anything of my own free will either. Because despite how I understand now as an adult that it’s a classist, anti-Semitic, transphobic dumpster fire that isn’t nearly as good of a mystery franchise as a LOT of people acted like it was. It’s not ‘just trying to get through bullying and separated parents’ child version of me’s fault that his hero turned out to be a complete fucking asshole nutcase who would hate who he is fundementally if she met him now.
Am I ever going to read it again because her actions have tainted the content somewhat? Even though these things impacted me heavily as a child and have intimate sentimental value? No, probably not.
Am I ever going to go on Pottermore or buy any merch, books, films, or interact with any online content she’s made ever again? No!
Am I still going to interact with content others have made assessing and thinking critically of her books and the films? Or satirizing/parodying it? Especially in light of how truly fucked up the author, and often as a result, the content of the books, are? YES.
Because we consume and analyze problematic media all the time! Even when we know the creator is problematic! Alive or dead! From A Brave New World (racist) to Supernatural (homophobic, almost never passed a Bechdel Test) to Lord of The Rings (racist, yes the films and books). What matters is that we are aware and critical and don’t support them in the future! (Sidenote: I’m not advocating you pirate classical literature unless you really have to. Because the classics do need to stay in print. But seriously, have fun with everything else I don’t give a shit.)
I liked (emphasis on the past tense) Harry Potter as a kid, it was my rock during an extremely unstable time for me. Doesn’t magically unfuck up the author or the books’ contents. It does NOT make me a TERF. Bottom line is it doesn’t matter what she (or any other creator for that matter) presumes our opinions are, it’s about her having the money to promote her transphobia. So don’t buy her shit, if you are less sentimental than me and can renounce her every piece of media entirely that’s great (/srs). But don’t attack people for who they were and what they needed. Some of us ex-potterheads are trans and can’t have completely binary emotions about the franchise, just sayin’.

a lot of white women in dbh fandom either fetishize white gay men. or sometimes they write these tone deaf self insert fics. usually depicting a white human lady who feels sorry for androids, showing how 'woke' she is by quoting mlk or nelson mandela or some other black person. it's like some of these people don't get how offensive it was for david cage to exploit the struggles of black people and they don't care either. they just want to fuck the white cop robot.
asjkdsajkld GO AHEAD KING STEP ON THIS PLATFORM BABEYYY! TAKE EVERYONE PRISONER!! LEAVE NO ONE LEFT ALIVE!!!
a lot of the fandom keep forgetting that their foundation is build on david cage’s exploitation of black people’s trauma, jewish people’s trauma, and profits off history that isn’t for him to tell. whenever a white person thinks they’re saying something by creating stories and films where “imaginary” characters are substitutes for marginalized people (ex. netflix’s “bright” and amazon prime’s “carnival row”). fairies, elves, and orcs go through a type of discrimination that is a lot like racism because of who they are, how they look, and how they are perceived as “other”. this is just a way for white people to digest the meaning of racism but it’s also incredibly harmful because it gives the perception that this doesn’t happen at all today when in reality, it is...and people are dying because of it. gosh not to get emotional but i was rewatching some of dbh because there was a mod for it and just...the way that this game is echoing a lot of what’s happening right now is just...it’s horrible! how can y’all demonize a violent revolution?? how dare a white person think that violence isn’t the answer when there is literal violence coming from the opposing side. then there’s the whole fucking fist symbol, the “i can’t breathe” shit, the “we have a dream”, the “hands up, don’t shoot”...literally getting sick thinking about how the game got away with so much shit and no one batted a fucking eyelash.
seriously, you really did capture this whole fandom in a nutshell. it’s incredibly frustrating when at the end of the day, the only thing the fandom walks away with from playing/watching the game is that connor is hot, nothing else. everyone’s attention is only drawn to connor’s storyline where they only care about him and the characters within his little world. it’s mainly white people (specifically white women) who are out here drooling over hankcon and reed900 as if gay men are some sort of sideshow attraction and say that they care about gay people when they don’t. even with rk1k, the ship between markus and connor, there are some works and fanart that depict a lot of racial stereotypes of markus and that shit ain’t right. people make fanfiction for stale side white characters and for what purpose? why can’t y’all think of headcanons for josh, a history university lecturer who definitely knows that history is repeating itself. what about rose and her son adam? why can’t y’all expand on her story and actually explore why she got into helping androids the that she does? and above all, why don’t y’all white stannies DESPISE markus? he is the literal at the center of dbh, this is his story...how are y’all just gonna brush him aside because you think he’s “boring”? this is not only the fault of DC but also the entire fandom. i have seen fandom literally create a character’s whole ass backstory, complete with fears and wants and dreams, for a side character that doesn’t fucking matter. trust if gavin was actually a man of color, he would be hated and cancelled. if hank was a man of color, he wouldn’t be forgiven for his past prejudices. hell, if connor was a man of color, y’all would NOT be this way with him...that’s on racism.
i did wanted to make this a separate paragraph because as a lot of y’all know, i used (maybe still..who knows) to write for dbh and i have seen firsthand the type of fics you described. the reader is either described as having the same prejudice as hank towards androids or the reader thinks “androids rights!” but it’s so base level activism and fake woke. like come on, girly, i don’t give a shit if you educated yourself by reading things, now what are you gonna do with the knowledge? how are you going to help this population? have you checked your own biases? then...that kinda gets to another thing where it drives me bananas thinking that white authors will write the reader as not having any sympathy towards androids...like what about us people of color who hurt alongside with them? who know what it’s like? it’s so vile to think that an author could write a reader to be so uncaring...it comes from a privileged place and that’s why i literally hate the self-insert dbh fandom. there is no representation whatsoever and whenever something is marketed as “neutral”, it never really is if the reader doesn’t care about androids. if the reader is actually written as neutral and to be “woke”, it’s a big ole bruh moment when they be like “why can’t we all get along :(” like fuck off!! we can’t get along because we still got a fucking police state, racist people in the streets, and the literal production of servants of color WHO STAND AT THE BACK OF THE BUS!! what is the reader doing about it? what are their biases? what are their privileges, if any? that’s why there’s not a single reader insert that is truly “neutral” because we know racism hasn’t been eradicated in the year 2038 (despite what rose said y’all KNOW that shit is deeply rooted and if the same establishments are still in place in detroit, we know racism hasn’t left) so we know that there will still be discrimination towards people of color. we can’t have neutral readers when writing in the dbh universe because that shit goes hand in hand. people of color, more so women of color, are gonna be far more sympathetic/empathetic towards androids and their cause than white people because they see a lot of themselves in them.
that’s why i tried to write for latinx readers while i was actively in the dbh fandom as a way to get the fandom into diversifying the reader. i have been incredibly vocal on my writing blog about these issues and though i was overwhelmed with love, support, and praise, i still wasn’t seeing the change the fandom promised to do. i was still seeing the same white reader being advertised as “neutral” ...and it hurt. neutral readers can’t provide the much needed nuances to discuss racism and discrimination about androids (since they symbolize black people/people of color do not argue this) because there needs to be a deeper understanding. yes, i have some privileges where i haven’t experienced half the shit others have experienced and i am not the spokesperson for people of color everywhere but i just know that we can no longer write neutral readers anymore when it comes to shit like this. it’s like when y’all right for 1940s!bucky barnes, you know damn well a woman of color would NOT be treated fairly during that time. that’s the nuance. you must be able to have the room to talk about it because then the work of fiction caters to white women. out of sight, out of mine and they go back to fucking connor. honestly, clown behavior.
no more “being hank’s daughter”, “gavin reed’s sister”, “reader that doesn’t care about androids/doesn’t believe in rights for androids” and other bullshit like that. society has progressed past being associated with white people!! fuck that shit xx

What do you think abut the Netflix Documentary Alt-Right: Age of Hate? My thoughts, it doesn't go far enough and while probably unintentionally glorifies Fascists and helps re-enforce the " alt-light" bs they try and push
Thank you for asking, because we have some strong opinions - not just about this particular documentary, but about any media coverage of fascists that relies on the participation of anti-fascists.Like we always say, anti-fascism is a big tent in which people with all kinds of different political perspectives unite in their opposition to fascism.  But one of the main tenets of anti-fascism is the position of “No Platform For Fascists.”  This means that we don’t believe anyone is obligated to provide fascists with the means to amplify or broadcast their filth; we don’t think anyone should; and we will do whatever we can to deny the fash platforms from which to do that, whether that means shutting down venues to hold their hate rallies or blocking their access to social media channels or denying them mass media coverage.  The media, however, is always willing to give free coverage and publicity to fascists, because those stories are guaranteed draw a big audience.  A lot of people in the media tell themselves this is ok because they’ll “make the fascists look bad.”  If that was true - that 99% of the audience consuming media coverage of fascists thinks it makes them look bad - why are fascists still so willing to participate?  Because for every 99 people that think the media coverage makes the fascists look like the scum they are, one person will be impressed by them, and seek them out to join them.  When it’s something like a Netflix doc which will be made available to 140 million subscribers, that means a potentially fash-sympathetic global audience of 1.4 million will get to see it and hear about fascist leaders and organizations they may not have heard of before.  No movement would turn down an opportunity like that. The trick is that the media don’t want to appear to be defacto publicists and promoters of fascism, so they need a countering viewpoint to “balance” their piece by showing “both sides.”  That’s where people like Daryl Lamont Jenkins come in.Jenkins, who “co-stars” along with white supremacist Richard Spencer  in Alt-Right, has been doing anti-fascist work for decades now but what troubles us is his relentless pursuit of opportunities to provide the fascists he’s supposed to be in opposition to with media platforms to spout off their bullshit to much larger audiences than they would otherwise be able to. The Netflix doc Alt-Right is the perfect example of this: it’s the first time that white supremacists like Richard Spencer or Gavin McInnis or David Duke or Jared Taylor get to have their views and opinions broadcast via Netflix into 140 million homes.  This was undeniably the biggest media coup for American Rennaissance - Taylor’s obscure club for racist crackpots, for example.  And that was all made possible by Jenkins’ willingness to participate in a documentary where fascists get more screen time and more opportunities to explain their fucked-up beliefs than anti-fascists do.  The truth is that white supremacists, nazis, and other extreme right bigots rely on the media to grow their movement.  If you want a clear example of this, think about the Soldiers of Odin: they were an obscure group of maybe a dozen Finnish Islamophobes that liked to cosplay bikers and walk around the streets of Helsinki, threatening racialized people.  They would have remained just that tiny & insignificant were it not for the international media coverage they received.  Because of that coverage, they went from a dozen bigoted losers to an international movement with chapters in many different countries.  We know from a source that at least one chapter was using a Vice documentary about them as a recruiting tool - you can’t really find a clearer example of media coverage designed to make a hate group look bad actually helping that group grow exponentially. Think about it: if Jenkins & other anti-fascists refused to participate in Alt Right, then the documentary would’ve been 90 minutes of nothing but fash propaganda.  No one would air that and it probably wouldn’t even be made.  The media needs anti-fascists to participate in these projects to make them seem objective by showing “both sides.”  Which in and of itself is hugely problematic, because it equates genocidal, violent bigotry as simply “the other side,” of a debate, like that’s just as valid to support as opposition to race hate and mass murder.  Jenkins has taken a lot of heat over the years for being so willing to act as the “other side” cover for media stories about fascists.  His defense of his actions boils down to “it’s good for anti-fascism because it means our message will reach a lot more people and that’s more important than whatever help it gives to fascists.”  We think he’s dead wrong about that.  If Jenkins was right, we would have expected a noticeable uptick in antifa support after Alt Right premiered - bigger turnouts at anti-fascist actions, a noticeable increase in support for projects like The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund, etc.  Alt Right has been out for about six weeks now and there has no detectable increase in support for anti-fascism.  We believe that principled anti-fascists refuse to cooperate with any journalists or filmmakers on projects that also provide fascists with an opportunity to amplify their reach via access to a platform they wouldn’t have otherwise.  We believe that collaboration with media projects that amplify the voices and opinions of fascists = providing them with a platform, which is the exact opposite of anti-fascism.

That’s a bold statement right? Oprah Winfrey is what most people consider to be the epitome of black excellence. She is a rags to riches story and a story of overcoming childhood sexual trauma and poverty to gain extreme wealth which she uses to “empower women” and “give representation to black women in media”. And in a lot of ways that is true. Oprah’s face every weekday on ABC was definitely something that made way for black women in the entertainment industry and journalism. She supports black directors like Ava Duvernay and Tyler Perry. She “gives back to the community”. What’s not to like about Oprah, right? PLENTY. Plenty is not to like about Oprah and her thirty year long career has PLENTY of anti-blackness, misogynoir, and dirtiness; which should honestly be expected. No one gets that rich without playing the game.
Reasons I don’t fuck with Oprah: The semi-comprehensive rant.
Oprah caters to the white feminist gaze. If you need context on what I mean by this please check out my article: ““Aint I a Woman?”- Feminism, the Illusion of Inclusion, and Historic Betrayal of White Women”. The demographic that Oprah has targeted for viewership of her talk show, and for her magazine are white women. Any episode of her show will feature a mostly white woman audience. This is possible because white women have more economic mobility to be stay at home mothers than black women. And in knowing this, Oprah’s show catered to it’s demographic. Being a registered and loud democrat her show was also HIGHLY liberal in its topics.
She was known for asking the hard questions- which in this context means “willing to gaslight and use dog whistle tactics on her black guests”- especially her black women guests.
One instance of this is when she interviewed Toni Braxton after Braxton filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Toni was embarrassed from having found herself in this situation. She was in an abusive record contract with La Face where she was only making $0.35 per album.
For context, La Face also famously fucked over TLC and in 1995 they had to file bankruptcy as well. Toni had FIVE Grammys and had sold over $170 million in records.
With TLC going bankrupt, the conversation on black women artists in the industry and specifically the record label in question fucking black women artists over was a part of public consciousness… for the black community. But for her white feminist, neo-liberal audience, Oprah wasn’t asking questions about why this continued to happen to black women. The specific abuses of this record company were COMPLETELY glazed over. She chose instead to GASLIGHT THE FUCK out of Toni- essentially victim blaming her for being taken advantage of by her record company. She also asked Toni very pointed questions about why the then five time Grammy winner felt like she had the right to spend the money she should have been earning. Toni is noticeably hurt, embarrassed, and confused by the questions and has been vocal about her feelings in that moment. Oprah is trash as fuck for this shit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftLjr4CQcrQ
In another instance of shitting on a black woman, Mo’Nique has also been vocal about her dislike of Oprah. Mo’Nique worked with Oprah for Precious. Oprah asked permission for herself to interview Mo’Nique’s brother who molested her as a child. Mo’Nique approved, but declined her own attendance, then confided in Oprah PRIVATELY about issues with her mother. It was clear that there was no love between Mo’Nique and her mother. Oprah responded by inviting Mo’Nique’s mother and father on the show and interviewing them as well. She also allowed Gerald to “give his side” and talk about how he was hurt by talking about her abuse at this hand and paint himself as a victim, while her mother and father tell how they’re upset that she talked about this and should’ve been discussed within the family (but they all agreed to come to the show).
Oprah allowed Mo’Nique’s family, and her abuser to gaslight her on national TV. And in the interview, Oprah also acknowledged that she was aware of the beef between Mo’Nique and her mother at the time.
Mo’Nique explains her side of the story here: https://youtu.be/Jb6N7aw61z8
Mo’Nique confronted Oprah about going behind her back and Oprah said she would “check into it” and never called back. Mo’Nique then confronted Oprah the next time they saw each other in person and Oprah issued a half assed apology. Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Lee Daniels then engaged in a smear campaign labeling Mo’Nique as difficult to work with because she was not okay with Oprah exploiting her trauma in ways she didn’t approve. Mo’Nique’s career suffered as a result. Mo’Nique is still fighting the effect this has had on her career and even recently has called out Oprah again about her silence on her Netflix boycott and black women not being paid what they’re worth in Hollywood.
Oprah has been loudly silent recently as well, claiming she’s not going to “meet negative energy where it is”… but she was willing to meet Mo’Nique’s abusers (in more ways than one) and exploit her trauma. TRASH.
Oprah has several problematic business relationships and personal relationships. Her most notable one is with Donald Trump himself. They were so close that Donald Trump once remarked in 1999 that he considered her as a running mate. He even echoed the sentiment in 2015 when he was running. Oprah and Trump have an over 30 year relationship and he has been on her show several times, with the most recent being in 2011. The first known (at least to the indication of my research) appearance of his on her talk show was in 1988. We are now real aware of the kind of vile, racist, sexually abusive, and all around terrible human being he is- but how is Oprah guilty by association if his political views weren’t publicly known until his 2016 presidential run? Answer: Donald Trump has been a racist as long as he’s been a public figure.
Examples of Donald Trump’s historical racism include: being found to discriminate against black renters in the 1970’s, racist treatment of black employees at his hotels and casinos, calling for the death penalty of the Central Park 5 in 1989 (and maintaining that they were guilt in 2016 which is ten years after they were exonerated), stating in 1989 that “well educated blacks have privilege”, blatant racism on Obama’s birth, and this is all before he ever started his political campaign in 2015 with more blatant racism. And this is the man that Oprah gave a platform on her show several times and never inquired about the lawsuits, the sexual assault accusations, nor his political views. And seeing as though he was close enough to her to see her as a potential running mate- I understand why those questions never came up.
Toni Braxton’s Gucci silverware was much, much more important.
Oprah’s Harpo studios have done a lot of work with the Weinstein company. Weinstein is the man behind the co-opting of the #MeToo movement by white feminists. The #MeToo movement was started by Tarana Burke, a black woman who has all been erased from the #MeToo narrative in favor of pretty, white actresses. According to the actresses who have accused Weinstein of assault and harassment, his behavior was no secret. Oprah, as an insider to the business had to have been aware of who this man was and still chose to work with him. Weinstein also used his relationship with and proximity to Oprah to lure in women.
This, of course, is not her fault, but is also easily avoidable by not having a close relationship with a serial sexual abuser.
I don’t kiss on folks I don’t know that well- personally.
Proponents of Oprah often times cite her humanitarian efforts as a means to justify her as a “Black leader” or black excellence, but many are not aware that most celebrities only donate what they would have had to pay in taxes, and Oprah, as an incredibly wealthy woman would have to pay A LOT in taxes. Some of her tales of generosity have amounted to serious harm for its recipients. For example- the recipients of the famous car giveaway found that after being forced to pay taxes on the car, it was much more trouble than it was worth and most couldn’t afford to keep it. At her famous, glamorous school in south Africa, tales of her covering up knowledge and inaction of sexual assault being committed there is ripe. It is also notable that on the list of official charities that she has been known to contribute to- none of them are black women specific with the exception of the Girl’s school. As someone who caters to white liberals, I don’t exactly expect them to.
I grew up in Chicago and went to Harper High School for one year before transferring to a private Catholic school on a scholarship. Oprah featured the school on her show in 2006, then followed up in 2010 (the year after I transferred out). Oprah offered no financial aid to the students of Harper High School who she used for trauma porn. The student exchange program started by the show did continue, however, for a few years after she came and left.
Arne Duncan attempted to “turnaround” the school and gave it some funds, but due to the actual socioeconomic issues that were affecting student enrollment, attendance, and motivation never being addressed, mental health services never being addressed or offered, the violence in the outside community never being addressed, and the actual infrastructure of the school continuing to fall into dilapidation- the turnaround failed.
Arne Duncan never saw the turnatound through- he left Chicago to be Secretary of Education for Obama in 2008, the year I arrived at Harper as a student.
As someone who was an actual student of Harper, but came from a private education the year prior and the years after- it feels like a prison.
It is a place that sucks the motivation from even the brightest students. The work was not challenging to me. The services for students who were gifted and motivated like me were limited and I found myself coasting through because the workload wasn’t challenging. I can understand how students with hard home lives, with different educational ability levels, and with different levels of motivation could walk into that prison and never see or want anything more from their education. Having witnessed this first hand and walked away without offering aid is disgusting of Oprah.
Oprah answered questions about the opening of her South African school in 2007 with the logic ”If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.” Her inaction is loud. She met with Harper students who were literally asking for the same standards of education as white suburban children, opened a school elsewhere without providing any resources, then went on her show and said “I believe, just as I know all of you watching believe, that every American child deserves the best school” and encouraged people to go to Standup.com for aid instead. She has no problems with broadcasting the trauma of black children so her white viewers can feel like they helped. She has no problems walking away from the same black children she just exploited without providing them resources, then further going to the media and claiming that the black children in the city she claims as home doesn’t want or deserve them. Fuck Oprah.
And yes- this one IS personal.
In the years since Oprah has ignored the cries for help from inner city Chicago kids for better education- CPS (Chicago Public Schools) has gone on a full scale assault on those same children, closing and targeting schools of children in poor black and latino neighborhoods for closure and forcing them to travel longer distances, into unfamiliar and unsafe territories. This is marked by the CPS “ Safe Passage” program where CPS now pays adults to stand on corners on the new routes to these schools and protect children who are in unfamiliar neighborhoods on their way to school. CPS has announced the closure of ALL FOUR high schools in the Englewood area, Harper will close at the end of this year. This means ALL Englewood high school students will have no high school in their neighborhood.
Oprah had a chance to make a real difference here ten years ago and decided these kids weren’t worth it. It is honestly disgusting. But let Oprah tell it- these kids don’t want or deserve more.
Oprah’s Golden Globes Speech this year was when I had officially had enough of her white feminist, neo-liberal nonsense, and pandering to white sensibilities at the cost of erasing the pain of black women and children. In this speech, Oprah compared the historical sexual and racial abuse experienced by black women and girls (like the assaults she covered up at her school) to this pretty little white elite #MeToo movement (the one that calls out her buddies Trump and Weinstein, and has erased black women like Tarana Burke). Erasure and exploitation of black women and children and our trauma for white feminists to feel some sick sense of Munchausen’s by proxy is honestly repulsive.
Their struggle has never been ours.
Oprah has been recently more on the producing side, giving opportunities to black women in film like Ava DuVernay. Most of Oprah’s credit in the black community come from her acting and producing career on the grounds that she provides representation for black people in media. I have a counter for that as well. How many films has Oprah produced that she did not also star in, thus making them self serving? Of those few- how many were actually targeted to African American demographics? Queen Sugar and Greenleaf have found a home on her network- as has Iyanla: Fix My Life- but with those exceptions- Oprah’s body of work is just more neo-liberal white feminist stories about fighting for white approval and acceptance and furthering the idea that proximity to whiteness is an accomplishment. This is an idea that’s just as damaging to black audiences as lack of representation at all.
Her stories also seem to either be black women trauma porn (on theme) or integrationalist. This is most interesting to me, as her projects that are not geared towards black audiences like The Hundred Foot Journey, don’t have these same themes.
The family of one of her films The Great Debaters is currently suing her- claiming she never paid for the rights to their patriarch’s story. She used her promotional tour for Selma to down talk the young, black, grassroots protesters against police brutality in Ferguson. This is a very stark contrast, considering that she is now offering thousands of dollars to support protesters of school shootings in Florida, whom are also grassroots, but also not mostly black and are also in line with the neo-liberal political agenda.
Between Oprah’s dicey connections in the industry, her respectability politics, her exploitation of black pain, her gas lighting of black women in crisis, and her erasure of black women’s SPECIFIC intersectionality for white women’s gaze and coin- I find no qualms with making the following statement:
FUCK OPRAH.

Fandom and politics, that's the topic of this message and a request for your opinion on fandom and politics. In recent days in polish fantasy fandom one of the prominent figures, a writer, asked why can't we all just talk and be fandom and leave politics behind, like in "good old days". And explained how he and the wolę fandom just doesn't like ideology pushed at him in media. (1/2)
(2/2) The problem is, what he calls ideology, is often media not being as racist, sexist or homophobic as usually (i.e. the feminist head of the team of writers of The Witcher netflix show, black Heimdall in "Thor" etc.)Or women in fandom demanding to do sth with t-shirts that was sold at one convention, with a print that goes sth along the lines of "I love burning villages and raping virgins". Because those are the prominent scandals of polish fandom.
hmmm the thing is, I think that fandom shouldn’t meddle with politics when it comes to fans period and when it comes to authors, it should but to a certain point. what I mean is:
when I say fandom shouldn’t be meddling with politics when it comes to fans I mean that whole part where you’re judged as SOMETHING just out of your fandom preferences. I mean, people saying you’re homophobic because you don’t ship the slash ship, people assuming you’re racist because you ship two white guys or the likes, people thinking you’re pro-pedophilia because you ship underaged characters and so on. that imo is a thing that regardless of the media in question should die in a fire because you cannot judge people on their fictional preferences. no one should assume I’m okay with incest in general if I ship thor and loki, no one should assume I’m racist because I like stevebucky better than stevesam and no one should assume I’m homophobic if I ship a m/f ship and so on. especially when it comes to people who ship/like problematic stuff for whichever damned reason and they get told they’re monsters when they just wanna do their thing. like that imo is a thing that has to die in a fire right now especially when it becomes a fandom-wide thing and you get people basically going like ‘if you’re white you can’t engage with a fandom with black/poc characters because you’re gonna be racist anyway’ and then complain when they get zero content. or worse, the star wars lists of problematic people that you need to avoid because they ship rey/lo and are therefore *insert problematic word here* and such things. fandom should be a place where fans are free to do whatever they like and explore whatever subjects they like without being judged for it. obviously if someone fucks up MAJORLY (see: the infamous j2 haiti fic of doom) calling them out should happen, also because it means that if they’re ignorant they’ll learn, and using fandom as a platform to learn stuff about people different from your social/ethnical background is always great, but people shouldn’t be shamed for what they do in fandom as a general rule. that is my general opinion when it comes to fans. you can’t go on and judge someone on whether they like noncon in fiction or not. like. no.
what you’re talking about instead is the media itself being more progressive, and in that case I don’t agree with the *good old days* thing because more diversity is good and honestly if someone’s problem is that heimdall is black in a marvel movie that isn’t even accurate per se because in theory thor and loki aren’t even odin’s sons then like, you need to get over yourself.
and like, one thing is having reservation over a shirt such as what you said and another is telling other women they can’t like kink or m/m porn, so like that is a kind of politics that needs to be discussed and absolutely should, but that’s not what I mean when I say I’d really like politics out of fandom space. one thing is fandom space, one thing is the original content. I’m entirely down for diverse original content of whichever kind, what I don’t think should be done is fans engaging with it just looking at the politics and judging it based on the politics only and not on the plot, and mostly judging it on whether it’s progressive enough or not and judging other people for liking it if they don’t think it’s progressive enough, not fans asking for more diverse stuff in general and/or wanting to feel included in fandom spaces, and I think creators should acknowledge that.
like, the polish fantasy writer obviously doesn’t care for diversity - but no one forces him to. but saying that FANTASY IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS WAS JUST WHITE PEOPLE is also ridiculous bc diverse fantasy has been around for ages like ffs.
what I mean is that we absolutely should have politics - if by that you mean more diversity - in the original media we consume, though I don’t think authors should be forced to do that because you get better things when the author actually wants to write them, and fandom should engage with more diverse media absolutely, but fandom can’t also judge what people in it do all the time based on how *they* engage with the content in case, because everyone will like different things and you can’t force people to engage with that specific thing just because you think it’s woke. and you also can’t trash the author for things you might perceive as problematic but actually aren’t.
examples of what I mean: I, author, write a fantasy story.
not so ideal case of politics in media: I, a white cishet female author, decided to write a fantasy story. I don’t know much stuff outside standard fantasy and I don’t feel like writing people who aren’t what I am. I write your usual standard lotr-ripoff, everyone is white, cis and hetero, there’s one romance, a couple bromances, no social or political hidden commentary. it has a good story. it’s an okay book. the fandom most likely will ship the guys in the bromances. no one feels challenged. tumblr declares me problematic for not writing diverse stuff and then ignores me.
ideal case of politics in media: I, a white cishet female author, decided to write a fantasy story. I don’t want to do the same usual lotr rehash and I know that diversity is important and I want to make a good job. I make my character list. I decide who’s white and who’s not, giving a decent balance. I make some of them non-straight. I don’t see many trans characters in fantasy, so I decide one of them is. I spend months talking to anyone belonging to the aforementioned categories asking them what they think of my approach - ie I find a number of trans people to discuss what I want with the trans character, I talk to a number of black people if I want the character to be black possibly not all from the US and I pick people from all over the place. I write my book. I make sure every character has a meaningful relationship with the others so that all their interactions are interesting. I try as much as possible to not have stereotypes. I get a bunch of betas and I change anything they find improvable. my book gets published. everyone loves it.
now, ideal fallout of the above which is what I mean with healthy fandom consumption: I get a fandom made up by diverse people because I have a diverse book. people enjoy that I gave everyone some space. they might interact with me on twitter and asking me ships headcanons. I tell them that they can ship whatever they like write whatever fic off it they want. every character gets some fic or moodboard and everyone enjoys whatever they like in whichever dynamic. not-trans people who had never run into a trans character in fantasy might go like ‘wow I hadn’t realized that’s how it felt’ and might get informed. if I based it on some specific historical period people might get informed on that. people belonging to the minority categories educate the others in fandom about what they might not know, nicely. everyone writes all the porn in the world. everything is great. if someone asks me why I have black/lgbt+/etc people in my book I reply them that minorities exist so why shouldn’t they be in my book and that’s the most twitter hate I get. life is great. my publisher wants more. that book becomes a series. rinse and repeat.
not so ideal fallout, ie what I mean with fandom shouldn’t be about politics: somehow, there’s a fanon ship that gets most fans for a reason. it happens to be idk, bisexual white guy + gay white guy who are not together in the book. they get more fic than dunno, hetero black woman with hetero asian guy. people start calling the first group problematic because they don’t ship the poc couple and THEY’RE RACIST. the trans character isn’t a stereotype/isn’t *good enough* for fandom standards so they decided that idk, feminine straight guy I put in because feminine straight guys exist is actually the only trans one because HEADCANONS and suddenly all fics with a trans character for that book are about the headcanoned character that’s actually a stereotype if you go for that, not the one I actually spent six months researching, and if you don’t agree you’re suddenly a transphobe. someone sends me a twitter message asking me what I think of HEADCANONS and I answer that I’m okay with HCs but I put canon characters that aren’t white, straight and cis for a reason and suddenly I’m THE MOST PROBLEMATIC AUTHOR EVER and people decide that my efforts aren’t good enough and that as a cis woman writing gay men is problematic and everyone in fandom who writes m/m and is a woman is shit. then people decide that shipping the black cis bisexual guy with anyone white is racist and writing porn where he’s on top is racist but then another side says that if he bottoms it’s racist (guys LOOK AT SW FANDOM I DIDN’T MAKE THIS UP), so no one ends up touching the black character out of fear of being dissed. six months after the book is out, the only thing there’s a fandom following for is a problematic as hell crackship in between two cishet white guys that hate each other and barely interacted because it’s the only fandom space where people don’t get shamed for what they like.
I, the author, look at all the hate messages I get on twitter and think fuck it, next time I’m just doing high fidelity 2.0 just with cishet white female protagonists so no one can tell me I did it wrong since I’m white, cishet, female and I hang out in record stores all the damned time or at least I used to when I was younger and they existed. I never write a diverse cast again. I never write a trans character again because that wasn’t what I wanted to do, I just wanted people to have fun and enjoy a more diverse cast of characters without fans murdering each other over it.
like, that’s what I mean with politics shouldn’t be in fandom that much, not that politics shouldn’t be in fandom spaces/in the media we consume period XD ;)

@netflix ...I am really hoping that you @netflix is better than this...it’s 2020...there’s enough shit going on. This was highly anticipated adaptation especially with the failure, racist whitewashing of that one disgraceful movie...However, netflix did have that movie streaming on their platform. Makes you think. Look, I really hope not. Especially with the whitewashing and sexualized tone...we don’t need to do that, the series was a major successful without going Games of Throne. And Whitewashing...oh, @netflix, you better fucking NOT! Asians Representations is fucking rare. And for them, to follow this old ass formula will destroy the series. Only the privilege and conditioned thinking racist and “I don’t see color” assholes will watch it. You know the old social media comment...they the ones they believe has the “was best for the job” .... or “don’t make this a race thing.” Fucking bullshit...have you walk outside lately, it’s always will be about race. Having positive representations fucking matters. Especially when the dialogue are constantly taken away to favor white privilege. The fact that the creators have walked away...shows that the series isn’t starting out...Well, actually it’s a very bad sign... @netflix, DON’T FUCK THIS UP!!!
Look, I don’t know about all news being released, but I am going taking this article with consideration. Whitewashing is still very fucking real. It’s 2020, and trust me...this shit still happening. White kids growing up have always and still...have plenty of representations. Fucking obviously. Trust me, they ain’t deprived of media representations. But for those, especially POC...having a story...especially a serial epic one produced in America is soooooo fucking rare. Think, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Games of Throne, Twilight, Hunger Games,....yeah very diverse, right? Bullshit. I know, that white actors “voiced” the show...BUT THATS WAS DONE IN A TIME THAT PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW BETTER...APPARENTLY THEY STILL DON’T KNOW BETTER. AND ALSO, IT WAS ANIMATION. BUT FOR ANYONE, WHO WATCHED THIS SERIES AND “THINK” THAT THE ASIANS’ CULTURE, STYLE, AND TONE ISNT HEAVILY INFLUENCED IN THIS SERIES...AND SOMEHOW “JUSTIFIES” THEMSELVES THAT THESE CHARACTERS CAN BE WHITE...THEN, GO FUCK YOURSELVES. I am tired of your privilege thinking. I am so tired of this.
And side note, yes...goodness, it will be a great feeling that all kids from any races, religions, cultures, etc...can see themselves in these characters. Relate to them, learn from them...etc...etc...and all this can still happen BEHIND AN ASIAN CAST. YOU DON’T NEED JUST ONE RACE REPRESENTATIONS TO FEEL THINGS. I’ll give you an example, Michael Jordan. I grew up in the 90s...and every kid all around the world...including myself...wanted to be “LIKE MIKE.” ...that’s my added rant.
can we also start a riot on here too bc i do not want to see my favs be whitewashed like in the live action movie nor do i want them sexualized.
this show is a comfort show for some of us, including myself, and i don’t want it ruined because netflix wants to cater to white ppl instead of going with the original story. this isn’t right. as an asian, and a fan of the cartoon, this is highly disappointing. i want to see more people like me on screen. i don’t need to see another white person STEALING an asian person’s role as scarjo did.
the thought of the characters i grew up with being aged up for sexual reasons and being whitewashed, once again, is disgusting. these characters helped shape me into the person that i am today. there is not a single white person in this series whatsoever. this is not a topic up for discussion. i don’t need to see the same 3 white actors in this show as theyve casted in other netflix films. i am tired of all the asian/inuit people erasure.
do NOT call this “avatar: the last airbender” and tarnish its name if you’re gonna stray away from the original narrative and “separate it from the animated series.” they want it to be darker? have they not seen the puppet master episode? did they forget that this show takes on a lot of dark topics? this show does not need blood. it most definitely does not need sex. this is a show whose main audience is geared toward children and that’s how it should remain. it shouldn’t be made “darker.” atla doesn’t need to be turned into riverdale. CANCEL the live action show if its just gonna be as bad as the movie.

Netflix, Hulu & More Support #BlackLivesMatter Amid George Floyd Protests + NFL Interestingly Speaks Out + Joe Biden Calls For Peace
Tumblr media
Several big brands are speaking out in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement as protests for George Floyd continue to sweep the nation. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and several other brands are showing support. More inside…
Tons of big brands are speaking out in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement amid tense protests that are demanding justice for the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer.  It's interesting, as just a few years ago most brands and most of America wanted nothing to do with any #BlackLivesMatter affiliations.  Things have changed, likely due to incessant protests, pressure on companies who take black dollars and use black talent to sell their products, and more evidence of injustice that anyone with sense can't ignore.
Netflix, STARZ, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video posted messages on their social media accounts in support of the black community:
Tumblr media
To be silent is to be complicit," Netflix tweeted. "Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up."

"Together we stand with the black community - colleagues, artists, writers, storytellers, producers, our viewers - and all allies in the fight against racism and injustice. #BLACKLIVESMATTER," Amazon Prime Video wrote on Instagram.
HBO and HBO Max changed their Twitter handles to #BlackLivesMatter along with posting messages of solidarity:

TBS and TNT changed their Twitter handles also with the same message.
YouTube has pledged $1 million to support social injustice efforts:

TikTok issued the following statement:

“At TikTok we deeply value the diverse voices among our users, creators, artists, partners, and employees. We stand with the Black community and are proud to provide a platform where #blacklivesmatter and #georgefloyd generate powerful and important views with over 1 billion views. We are committed to fostering a space where everyone is seen and heard.”
Of all companies to speak out during this time, the NFL had the nerve to address George Floyd's killing - the reason Colin Kaepernick initially took a knee.

Sports analyst Jemele Hill perfectly sums up our thoughts about the NFL addressing George Floyd's killing:
You gotta be fucking kidding me https://t.co/K8vST8IaCo
— Jemele Hill (@jemelehill) May 30, 2020
The NFL tweeting about what happened with George Floyd is the equivalent of when the CIA recognizes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday. Loved him so much y’all helped to kill him. Get outta here with the bullshit.

If we are complacent, if we are silent, we are complicit in perpetuating these cycles of violence.
None of us can turn away. We all have an obligation to speak out.

Former Vice President and presidential hopeful Joe Biden is calling for peace amid the raging protests.
We are a nation in pain, but we must not allow this pain to destroy us. We are a nation enraged, but we cannot allow our rage to consume us. Please stay safe. Please take care of each other. https://t.co/Y224rANwUF
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) May 31, 2020
"These last few days have laid bare that we are a nation furious at injustice. Every person of conscience can understand the rawness of the trauma people of color experience in this country, from the daily indignities to the extreme violence, like the horrific killing of George Floyd," he said addressing the protests that have swept the nation.
"Protesting such brutality is right and necessary. It’s an utterly American response. But burning down communities and needless destruction is not. Violence that endangers lives is not. Violence that guts and shutters businesses that serve the community is not."
"And I also know that the only way to bear it is to turn all that anguish to purpose. So tonight, I ask all of America to join me — not in denying our pain or covering it over — but using it to compel our nation across this turbulent threshold into the next phase of progress, inclusion, and opportunity for our great democracy."
"We are a nation in pain, but we must not allow this pain to destroy us. We are a nation enraged, but we cannot allow our rage to consume us. We are a nation exhausted, but we will not allow our exhaustion to defeat us," he continued.
You can read his full statement here.
Biden also spoke with CNN's Don Lemon about the protests:
You can't defeat bigotry; it only hides. And when leaders give it oxygen — as Donald Trump has done — it comes roaring back.
We all have a moral obligation to stand up, speak out, and hold people accountable. pic.twitter.com/vES2aIXVGl

Forever President Barack Obama and forever First Lady Michelle Obama both released statements on George Floyd's killing:

Often, it feels as though art takes itself a little too seriously. Everything, for some reason, needs to be intense, spiritual or so horrifyingly sad it leaves you in emotional pain for the rest of the day. Though, this misstep of modern music is exactly what Johnny Utah’s combating. Instead of falling into the same trap, Johnny Utah is, refreshingly, making music fun again.
His songs flow with an effortless rhythm, a groove that hypnotizes the body and encourages movement, whether a toe tap, head bob or full on interpretive dance. He does so through his unique song writing abilities, building tracks lush with instrumentation and lyricism, filled to the brim with fresh youthful energy.
It’s taken time and honest effort for him to find the sound he feels represents him the best. In the past, there have been countless musical revisions, each closer than the last. But now, his confidence in his ideas stands firm, enabling him to tackle the music world with his brand of necessary positivity.
Our first question as always, how’s your day going and how are you?
Yeeerrrrr! I can’t call it brother, I have been better but that is ok. My day itself is going beautiful and I hope yours is as well.
To begin, how would you describe your artistic vision for those unaware of you, and how do you believe it’s changed over time?
Somebody in an article once described my newer music as “Carnival Funk” and I kinda like how funny that sounds so let's just run with that as my answer. It's definitely a “newer” direction for me, because previously, whenever I was making solo music, I was just doing some weird lo-fi stuff in my bedroom and uploading it solely for friends to hear. Last year, after I decided to actually make an official solo moniker for myself and brand myself as an artist, I would say my creative direction definitely changed and matured into the music you have been hearing from me, which I call: HEADASS POP.
Tumblr media
What were your original inspirations and pushes towards your artistic path, and, how do you reflect upon their importance to you?
Most definitely Teen Suicide, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Tyler The Creator, and STRFKR are four I want to zero in on. They were four influences that were in my heavy rotations during my critical youth years in high school, where my entire musical interest was completely molded and shaped.
How has living and creating in Philadelphia shaped your work? Is it place that you find grows your creativity and gives you artistic opportunity?
Honestly, it hasn't changed anything for me at all. Don't get it twisted though! Cool place to live and I love all my friends but this city doesn't do anything for my music. I could be in a cabin in the woods and somehow my end result would still be some sweet-sexy-love tunage.
In terms of vision, you’ve talked in the past about labelling your music using genres similar to others, but with releases like Crazy for Your Love, have you found yourself moving into your own lane and working to find something more singular?
Yeah most definitely! I really feel like in my last three to four singles I have come into my own and found my sea legs as an artist. There was definitely a weird adjustment period when some of my influences from high school and my favorite artists became fans of my music / peers, but I think I have singled myself out and fleshed out a sound that I am really proud of.
What do you believe are the greatest improvements you want to make as artist going forward? What do you say as fixing points within your artistry?
I just feel like I could do a lot more because I honestly don't do anything to give back at all. I want to try and find a way to give back more with my platform. Maybe find some charities to donate money to that help fund music programs for schools or something like my friend Victor! has been talking about recently where they want to teach kids in school how to use programs for making music.
Tumblr media
As well, what does the next year look like for you, both career wise and personally? What plans and goals have you set forth for yourself and what projects exist beyond the horizon?
Right now I’m taking a little step back and giving myself a short break from music for the next month or two, until my next release. I have done a release a month for the last 6 months and I want to take some time for myself and my head to just play Super Smash and have no other mental focus. This music shit is all secondary to my dream of becoming a professional Smash player so y’all can just wait on the new music.
Do you see yourself delving more within the world of collaboration going forward, or is that something you’ve personally written off for the time being?
I got some collabbies in the works, shhhh.
What was your greatest memory of the last year? Why does that moment stick out to you and what importance does it hold?
Okay I got one. I got on the front page of Apple Music with the “best of the week” playlist and my madre saw it and she thought it was the coolest thing ever and sent it to all her little friends. Also I don’t know why I just called my moms friends little. I think they are normal sized. I have never seen them all in the same room though if I'm honest, so who’s to really say.
If you were given the chance to play one live show anywhere within the world, where would you hold it? For example, you could have one on Mt. everest, or a bathroom at an in-n-out, whatever floats your boat.
“Cookout” in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Its this fast food place that all the racist good ‘ole boys would drive their big ass lifted trucks to and then fight in the parking lot. Lots of sperrys. Lots of polo. I would love to play my stupid ass love music for them and get called a lot of homophobic slurs just like when I was 15, only this time I'll be 23 with guitar in my hand and a target on my head.
Tumblr media
Also, you have beautiful arm sleeve tattoos, what are the designs on them and what is their significance? But as well, if you could get one tattoo, for free, with no negative repercussions, which would you go for and where?
So, first off, thank you homie. All my tattoos are meaningless and done by my buddy Chris D Kline,he works in Philly and New Hope, PA. Go look him up and give him your money. My one free pass tattoo would have to be “Kill Ray Romano” under my left eye on my face.
What is one movie, book or TV show you would recommend to everyone reading this right now? What was your experience with it when you first came to enjoy it?
I feel like a lot of cool guy artist can tell you some really cool pretentious book to read or some really like niche indieflix. I think all y’all should just fuck around and get a Netflix trial and watch Black Mirror.
Do you have anyone or anything to shoutout or promote? The floor is yours!
Shout out to the team! UNDERWATER baby!
