From hire to canned items, this is what CNN readers plan to spend their aid funds on But the upcoming direct aid funds from the most recent Covid aid bundle — at present as much as $600 per taxpayer and $600 per youngster — will not purchase them a lot time. In lots of cases, lower than per week or two of monetary aid, and solely on just a few of their many bills: hire, meals, utilities, gasoline, insurance coverage and the bank card debt they racked up attempting to juggle invoice funds with out a lot revenue. That was the overwhelming message from the greater than 1,000 CNN Enterprise readers who responded to our callout, asking them how they plan to spend their upcoming checks. Ought to Congress move a $2,000 aid fee, which is being determined on Capitol Hill this week, individuals who spoke to CNN mentioned the cash would go towards their identical important bills with a few of it earmarked for financial savings to protect towards an unsure future. Gio Martinez is a cook dinner at a Denny’s in Southern California and the only father of a 4-year-old daughter. He used to work 60 hours per week earlier than the pandemic. Now his hours are sometimes 20 to 25 hours per week, he mentioned. Martinez mentioned he has a number of bank cards and some retailer playing cards and is mostly maxed out on all of them — having used them since March to purchase groceries, utilities and gasoline for his automobile to get to work. His direct fee of $1,200 for himself and his youngster will go towards paying off a number of the $5,000 in bank card debt he is accrued this yr and to getting a brand new wardrobe for his daughter, who outgrew her garments and sneakers this summer time. “It breaks my coronary heart seeing her put on garments which can be too small for her,” Martinez mentioned. Although he is been making minimal funds on his bank cards, which have a roughly 20% rate of interest, Martinez mentioned, “I am behind on every thing.” That features the $400 month-to-month hire he owes his mother and father, with whom he and his daughter reside. Stocking up Retiree Sandra Jamieson, a former authorities worker dwelling in a small city in northwestern Pennsylvania, mentioned whereas she does not imagine $600 aid funds will do practically sufficient to assist individuals struggling, she feels lucky to have the ability to pay her payments on the mounted revenue from her pension. However she finds the expansion in grocery costs — particularly on gadgets which have been restricted throughout the pandemic — sometimes outpace the annual price of dwelling changes in her revenue. So she welcomes the $600. “I am glad to have the cash irrespective of how a lot it’s — I will replenish on canned items, paper items and dried items,” Jamieson mentioned. $600 ‘does not do something long run to assist me out of this case’ James Judd, a younger photographer who takes household and college class portraits for a studio run by a retailer in Washington state, mentioned he’ll use his $600 to assist cowl hire or he’ll simply put it apart in case there may be one other shutdown. Judd had been furloughed and on unemployment from April to August. Now he says he has solely been working a mean of 20 to 25 hours per week for the reason that studio reopened, a fraction of what he used to work, particularly throughout the winter holidays, that are usually peak season. “And it is not simply our hours which have been reduce. It is that we will not have full capability [in the studio because of Covid restrictions],” Judd famous. He is been maintaining together with his payments thus far, he mentioned, however solely as a result of he saved a number of the $600 per week federal supplemental funds that he bought on prime of his state unemployment advantages throughout the spring and early summer time. Going ahead, the upcoming, one-time $600 fee will not purchase him various weeks of monetary aid, he mentioned. “It does not truly do something long run to assist me out of this case. I do not know what to do. All I do know is that I am indignant.” The $600 funds will not even go to all who want it Maybe the one factor that may have made Judd angrier would have been getting no direct fee in any respect, which is the state of affairs going through many unemployed or underemployed individuals, like Michael Longe of Seattle. Longe was laid off in late 2019 from his job managing a software program design staff for an electronics producer. However he will not qualify for a aid fee (nor did he earlier this yr when individuals bought $1,200 checks). At the least not instantly. That is as a result of within the curiosity of getting checks out rapidly to individuals, preliminary eligibility has been based mostly on 2019 tax returns. And final yr, Longe made greater than the allowable thresholds. To qualify for a full aid fee, one has to make $75,000 or much less ($150,000 if married). Partial funds are made to these whose incomes exceed these ranges however do not prime $99,000 ($198,000 if married). But when Longe’s 2020 revenue falls under these thresholds he ought to be capable to declare the aid funds on his 2020 tax return as a Restoration Rebate Credit score. Longe’s prolonged unemployment advantages are expiring this month and he worries he will not be eligible for extra advantages in Washington state. Which means he additionally will not profit from the $300 weekly federal supplemental fee that the most recent Covid aid bundle has created. “With out unemployment advantages, I actually may use [the $600 relief payment],” Longe mentioned. Correction: The unique model of this story misstated that Longe would not qualify for any financial aid funds as a result of his 2019 revenue was too excessive. Actually, the checks being despatched out are advances on a 2020 refundable tax credit score, which will likely be based mostly on 2020 revenue. The credit score will cut back one’s tax invoice and if it exceeds what somebody owes, it can improve their tax refund. (CNN) Now that the $600 federal unemployment supplement has expired, Eliajah Carroll is trying to survive on only $200 a week in Rhode Island state benefits.
The Providence bartender, who hasn’t worked since the coronavirus pandemic shuttered his restaurant in March, logs onto Indeed every morning to hunt for work. He’s applied for jobs at banks, at retailers in malls and at cell phone stores. Only one employer responded, and it was to turn him down.
With September rent due in 10 days, Carroll is hoping lawmakers act soon — even though Congress may not take up extending the unemployment benefit boost until next month. And Rhode Island has yet to be approved for the temporary $300 weekly supplement authorized under President Donald Trump’s recent executive action.
Tumblr media
“Everyone is pretending they are looking out for us,” said Carroll, 30, who made about the same on the enhanced unemployment as he did at work. “They are not the ones faced with: ‘Should I buy groceries or should I put my $200 this week to my rent?’ “
His message to Congress is simple: “Put yourself in our position and get something done.”
Deeply divided over how much support to continue providing the roughly 28 million unemployed Americans amid the fragile economic recovery, Congress left Washington this month without any agreement.
Democrats want to continue the $600 boost until early next year, while Republicans proposed cutting the enhancement to $200 for at least two months and then to 70% of the jobless person’s former wage. This week, Senate Republicans drafted a scaled-back measure that would provide a $300 weekly supplement, and pressure is building on Democrats to accept a more limited proposal.
Millions of laid-off Americans are now trying to pay for housing, put food on the table and pay other expenses only on state unemployment benefits — a weekly cut of at least half in every state.
State jobless payments were never designed to substitute for paychecks but to give the unemployed some income to carry them until they find new positions. They typically replace about 40% to 45% of an out-of-work person’s wage, on average.
The benefits are pretty paltry in many states. The average payment in June ranged from $183 in Louisiana to $456 in Hawaii, according to the US Department of Labor. But the unemployed in two dozen states receive less than $300 a week, on average.
That’s one reason Congress decided to provide an additional $600 a week for four months as part of its historic enhancement to the nation’s unemployment program in the $2 trillion coronavirus relief package in late March. The extra funds were designed to allow people to stay home at a time when government officials didn’t want them going to their jobs or looking for work. Many thought the economy would bounce back by August, but that’s not the case.
After lawmakers were unable to agree on continuing an enhanced payment earlier this month, Trump announced that he would redirect federal disaster aid to provide the jobless with $300 a week if states put up an additional $100. The Department of Labor later said states could count their existing unemployment payments toward the required match.
But it could take several weeks before the unemployed see any money because states have to apply for the lost wages assistance grants and set up programs to administer the program since it’s not part of the traditional unemployment program. Even then, the $44 billion allotment is expected to last only four or five weeks, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is administering it.
So far, at least 19 states — Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah — have been approved by the agency. Kentucky and Montana will provide residents with an additional $100, making the total enhancement $400 a week.
Arizona has already started distributing the funds, sending more than $200 million to about 400,000 claimants earlier this week.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican and Trump ally, said last week that the state will not apply because it has recovered many of its lost jobs.
But the President’s supplement won’t do much for Terri Onick, who is receiving only $184 in Florida benefits now.
After losing her job as a barista in a food hall in March, Onick cut back on her spending to make sure her enhanced unemployment benefits would cover her needs, even though it was a bit less than she had made at work. She got rid of cable and started using her bicycle instead of her car. She stopped going to the nail salon and did her own yard work.

Knowing the federal boost would expire on July 31, the Miami resident managed to set aside some money for her basic expenses in August and September. But she’s nervous about being able to find a job — and about the continuing stalemate on Capitol Hill — before October.
“My current unemployment will not even pay my rent and we’re not even discussing car insurance, we’re not talking about electricity and food,” said Onick, 46, who has applied for hundreds of jobs during the pandemic but hopes to get her old job back once the surge in coronavirus cases subsides.
“I’m hoping that we’ve reached our actual plateau in Miami. And we’ll start to be able to open back up,” she continued. “That’s what I’m really, really hoping for. But if that doesn’t occur, we need assistance from our government.”

$400 Unemployment Supplement Is Really $300, and Won’t Arrive Soon
The federal aid to unemployed workers that President Trump announced last weekend looks likely to be smaller than initially suggested — and it remains unclear when the money will start flowing, how long it will last or how many workers will benefit.
The uncertainty comes at a delicate time for the economy. New applications for state unemployment benefits fell below one million last week for the first time since the pandemic took hold in March, the Labor Department said Thursday. But filings remain high by historical standards, and other measures show the economy losing momentum.
A $600-a-week federal supplement to unemployment benefits, enacted to address the pandemic, stopped at the end of July. That has pulled away a key source of support, not just for the nearly 30 million Americans receiving benefits but also for the broader economy.
“The status of the financial relief is a huge question mark hanging over the economy,” said Daniel Zhao, senior economist for the career site Glassdoor.
Mr. Trump said Saturday that he was taking executive action to provide unemployed workers with $400 a week in extra payments, on top of their regular state jobless benefits. He did so after talks on a new round of pandemic relief stalled in Congress.
The Senate adjourned on Thursday until early September, and House members had already left Washington. The departures all but end any chance of a quick agreement on sending stimulus checks to American taxpayers, reviving lapsed unemployment benefits and providing billions of dollars for schools, testing, child care, small businesses, and state and local governments.
In the meantime, states are scrambling to figure out how to carry out Mr. Trump’s plan, with unemployed workers wondering whether the money will arrive in time to prevent lasting financial harm.
Here is what we know about the program and how it will work.
The benefit will be $300 for most workers, not $400.
When Mr. Trump announced the program, known as Lost Wages Assistance, he said it would add $400 to workers’ weekly unemployment checks.
But unlike the earlier supplement, which was fully funded by the federal government, the program called for states to chip in a quarter of the cost. Governors from both major parties balked at being asked to spend billions of dollars when tax revenues have plunged because of the economic collapse.
So this week the administration offered new guidance: Rather than adding $100 a week on top of existing unemployment benefits, states could count existing benefits toward their share. In other words, unemployed workers would get an extra $300, not $400.
States still have the option of providing an extra $100, but few if any are expected to do so.
“They’re stretched,” said Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation who has been studying the unemployment system. “They don’t have money for masks for the teachers in their schools. They’re probably not going to come up with an extra $100 for everyone on unemployment insurance.”
The lowest-paid workers won’t qualify for the extra money.
Under guidance released by the Labor Department on Wednesday evening, the new program will be available to people who certify that they are “unemployed or partially unemployed due to disruptions caused by Covid-19” — but only if they already qualify for at least $100 a week in unemployment benefits.
That provision would exclude roughly one million people, nearly three-quarters of them women, according to Eliza Forsythe, an economist at the University of Illinois.
“They’re the people who need it the most,” Ms. Forsythe said. “They were low paid to begin with, and then being singled out for not getting this benefit I think is really cruel.”
It isn’t clear why the $100 minimum was established. Mr. Trump established the benefit under a federal disaster program that requires states to cover 25 percent of any costs. But that rule applies to the overall program, not to individual recipients. People receiving money under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, for example, qualify for the $300 a week even though that program is entirely funded by the federal government.
It could take weeks for the money to start flowing.
Even for those who qualify, it could be weeks or even months before they begin receiving any extra money. States will need to adjust to the new provisions when they are already overwhelmed by unemployment filings.
It took months for some states to begin paying benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program — which extended benefits to cover independent contractors, self-employed workers and others left out of the standard unemployment insurance system — in part because of archaic computer systems that are difficult to reprogram.
“We think it would take months,” William G. Kunstman, a spokesman for the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, said in an email. He cited the difficulty of reprogramming the state’s computer system to comply with federal requirements.
Even states with more modern computer systems said it could take weeks to get the new supplement started. Bill McCamley, secretary of the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, said that his state was among the first to get the pandemic assistance program up and running, but that it still took nearly a month.
“Even in our system, which is very modern in the unemployment world, it’s still going to take us time to do it right,” he said.
Mr. McCamley also warned that a murky timeline could prompt further confusion and distress for people seeking the new benefit. After Mr. Trump signed the $2.2 trillion stimulus into law on a Friday in March, Mr. McCamley said, his office returned Monday to thousands of calls seeking the aid — even though it would take about a month to streamline the new benefits and programs.
“The message went out that this was done, and there was not a concurrent one saying this doesn’t happen at the flip of a light switch,” he said.
Trump administration officials contend that the new program will be faster to put in place because states have gained experience during the pandemic. But even these officials say it will probably be weeks before workers start receiving the money.
The money won’t last long.
The program is retroactive to Aug. 1, meaning that workers should eventually receive payments for all of August.
But Mr. Trump’s executive action caps spending on the program at $44 billion, enough to cover five or six weeks of benefits, assuming all states sign up. That means the program could end almost as soon as it begins.
It is still possible that Congress could either revive the original unemployment supplement — though probably at less than $600 a week — or appropriate more money for Mr. Trump’s replacement.
But any deal appears far off. Democrats in the House voted in May to extend the $600-a-week enhancement through the end of the year as part of a $3.4 trillion stimulus measure, but Senate Republicans have refused to take up that bill. The $1 trillion proposal unveiled by Republicans last month calls for a supplement averaging $200.
Democrats argue that a legislative solution is the only way to provide workers with certainty.
“The Labor Department’s new guidance leaves many unanswered questions,” said Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, who helped negotiate the original $600 benefit. “Workers struggling to pay rent and buy groceries are not going to see benefits they were promised any time soon.”
Workers are left in limbo.
For unemployed workers, the uncertainty over benefits means not knowing when they will be able to pay down the credit cards, or whether they will be able to make rent on Sept. 1. For those already struggling to get help from overwhelmed state unemployment offices, the prospect of further delays is even more frustrating.
David Moniz started a job in March as a resident chef at Sur La Table, the kitchen goods retailer, in San Jose, Calif. His timing was terrible: After he spent one day on the job, the store shut down because of the virus, and he was furloughed.
It took Mr. Moniz, 29, weeks of calling to get through to California’s employment office and file an unemployment claim. Then, after a few weeks, his benefits abruptly stopped. His file is shown as “pending” on the state website, and despite endless hours of calling, he has been unable to get through to address the problem. He hasn’t received a check since June 1.
Without any money coming in, Mr. Moniz has burned through his savings and racked up debt. He has $28 left before he hits his credit limit, he said, and owes $200 in late fees and penalties to his bank, Wells Fargo.
“Wells Fargo calls me more than anyone in my family does because of my account right now,” he said.

Venezuela’s migrant crisis is reshaping Latin America
Anthony Faiola and Marina Lopes, Washington Post, August 30, 2018
BOA VISTA, Brazil--Settlers from across Brazil built this 20th-century city, creating an orderly urban space dotted with palm-fringed lawns and manicured parks. Its residents lived in relative isolation, with the most common outsiders being the anteaters wandering in from the Amazon jungle.
Then came the Venezuelans, streaming out of their country in Latin America’s largest migrant crisis in decades.
Waves of newcomers are overwhelming Boa Vista, inundating hospitals and sparking a 1,000-percent increase in emergency calls to police. Schools are scrambling to put up bilingual signs for Spanish-speaking students reaching Portuguese-speaking Brazil. Thousands of migrants are living on the streets, willing to work for a third of the wages of Brazilians. Refugee camps have sprung up in the urban core, giving rise to fears of long-term ghettos.
Boa Vista residents “are losing their city to people of a new culture, people they don’t know,” said the mayor, Teresa Surita. “If this continues, we will lose total control of this city.”
As their numbers skyrocket, Venezuelans fleeing hunger and repression in their collapsing socialist state are reshaping cities and towns across the Western Hemisphere. The sound of Caracas slang is now ubiquitous in some Miami neighborhoods. Thousands of miles to the south, the scent of Caribbean cooking wafts through streets in Santiago, Chile. In English-speaking Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuelans make up a new working class.
Aid groups estimate that between 1.6 million and 2 million Venezuelans will leave their nation this year, escaping hyperinflation and desperate shortages of food and medicine. Those numbers are on top of the 1.5 million Venezuelans who left between 2014 and 2017. Roughly 1 in 10 Venezuelans will have left their country in a four-year span.
Compared with the European nations receiving Syrian refugees in recent years, Latin American countries have few resources to cope with the deluge of migrants. In recent weeks, Peru and Ecuador started insisting that arriving Venezuelans have passports, not just national ID cards, effectively closing their borders to many.
Brazil has kept its doors open. But this week, President Michel Temer signed an emergency decree sending additional troops to the northern border to reinforce a military contingent there. The sudden migrant influx is raising concerns about crime and lawlessness, as well as deeper questions about identity in a country that was long culturally walled off by its distinctive language and habits.
As that change accelerates, initial sympathy for the migrants is turning to shock, and shock is turning to rage--bringing the global debate over immigration to perhaps its most remote outpost: the Amazon region.
“Trump should be our president,” said Marcos Pereira da Silva, 43, a house painter who joined an anti-migrant protest in Boa Vista one Saturday in mid-August. That day, hundreds of angry Brazilians in the border town of Paracaima went on a rampage, bulldozing a makeshift migrant shelter and burning its occupants’ belongings after the stabbing of a local merchant.
“We need a wall,” Pereira said.
Boa Vista’s newest and fastest-growing migrant enclave is Rondon No. 1, a sprawling settlement of rows of durable plastic shelters that is home to more than 600 people. It is one of six emergency housing centers that have gone up here since March. Built by the army and operated with the aid of the United Nations refugee agency, the centers are bringing to Brazil an alien concept: refugee camps.
For those fleeing Venezuela, Boa Vista is the first big city south of the border, and the capital of Roraima state. Venezuelans began trickling in three years ago as their country’s petroleum-based economy slid into crisis because of plunging world oil prices and government mismanagement. By now, 800 Venezuelans a day are crossing into the state. Officials estimate 30,000 Venezuelans are living in Boa Vista, or 10 percent of the city’s population. By year’s end, they say, 1 in 5 residents could be Venezuelan.
On a recent afternoon, the city’s newest residents grilled arepas--Venezuelan corn cakes--on portable stoves. Salsa music, foreign in this country-music-loving city, blared on radios as residents chatted in Spanish.
It feels almost like a Venezuelan neighborhood, said Marisol Martinez, 38, who arrived here alone seven months ago. She has put on some weight after losing 20 pounds at home because of a lack of food and has picked up some Portuguese at a local church. “Falo bem, não, é?”--I speak well, no?--she joked, testing out the language.
She sends most of the money she earns cleaning houses home to her children. But she wants to launch an arepa business and earn enough to bring her children to Brazil.
This kind of regional migration was once exceedingly rare. No more.
“My children are not eating, they’re going to bed hungry, because that’s Venezuela,” she said. “Brazil is giving us a chance.”
The shelters are meant to be temporary, but many people in Boa Vista are dubious.
“This is the ghettoization of Boa Vista,” said Maria Suely Silva Campos, governor of Roraima state, of which Boa Vista is the capital.
She has gone as far as asking the Brazilian Supreme Court to close the border. Thus far, it has ruled against her, but she said she is determined to stop the influx.
Inside the gates of Nova Canaã Elementary School, the daily lunch menu is listed in Portuguese and Spanish. The bathrooms also have bilingual signs. A wall banner offers a “Welcome” in both languages.
Some U.S. cities coping with large numbers of immigrants took years to face the kind of challenges now confronting Boa Vista at lightning speed. In 2015, there were 53 Venezuelan students in Boa Vista’s school system. This year, the number is 2,261. And most Venezuelan children here are not enrolled in school.
To cope, the city is ordering 50 shipping containers to use as overflow classrooms.
“Most of our teachers don’t speak Spanish, so we don’t have a curriculum for the Venezuelan kids,” said schools superintendent Hefrayn Lopes. “At the same time, we think they need to adapt to our culture. We shouldn’t adapt to theirs.”
Boa Vista--the poorest state capital in Brazil--has not received enough aid from the federal government to handle a refugee crisis, local officials say. The majority of Venezuelans arriving, they say, are malnourished. With medicines scarce and conditions deteriorating in Venezuela, many are also ill--arriving with measles, malaria, HIV infection and tuberculosis.
At the 300-bed Roraima General Hospital, the largest in Boa Vista, Venezuelans now make up more than 50 percent of patients. With the hospital well over capacity, the sick lie languidly on beds in the corridors. On a recent day, one Venezuelan with complications of diabetes moaned as he lay on his side, waiting for doctors to amputate one of his legs.
“We’ve had to delay all nonemergency operations for Brazilians, some by months,” said hospital director Marcilene Moura. She added that the Venezuelan patients are arriving with startling illnesses.
“Today, we no longer see patients with just a fever,” she said. “They come with cerebral malaria, gunshot wounds and meningitis.”
Despite sharing borders with seven Spanish-speaking countries, Brazil stands apart in Latin America. The country looks toward the United States, Europe and China as economic and cultural touchstones. Brazilian students are more likely to study English than Spanish as a second language. Fashion, cinema and culinary trends tend to come from Hollywood and Paris, not Buenos Aires or Mexico City.
For Boa Vistans, the newcomers represent a culture shock.
On a recent afternoon at a town market, a Venezuelan musician picked up his guitar and began singing a Venezuelan folk song outside a restaurant. Venezuelan customers tapped their feet and sang along.
But the festive atmosphere soured a few stalls down.
“It’s like they have no limits,” complained Nelle de Maciel, 63, a Brazilian seamstress who has worked in the market for five years. “Their life is a party. Our market used to be calm, but now they get together to sing and dance. Sometimes they even clap their hands. We aren’t used to it. When you go to someone else’s house, you need to adapt to their way of life.”
Many in the city also fear the desperate Venezuelans will undercut them in the local job market.
Paulo Sergio Rodrigues, 58, a contractor in Boa Vista, lost half his income after Venezuelan day laborers came to town charging a third of his rate. But he said he will not lower his prices. “It would devalue my work,” he said. He has traded his car for a motorcycle to cut costs.
Others, like fruit vendor Valmor Saldenia, 49, blame Venezuelans for a crime wave that is spooking customers. Petty thefts--particularly shoplifting at grocery stores--have increased sharply, police statistics show.
“People are leaving the market. They are scared their bikes and food will be stolen,” Saldenia said.
Saldenia, who sells corn for the equivalent of 30 cents an ear, says his business has fallen by 50 percent since the Venezuelans began arriving in large numbers.
Just yards away at the entrance of the market, Robert Jimenez, 37, was selling corn for about 16 cents an ear. He earns only a few cents of profit per ear and measures success by survival. On a good day, he’ll eat. On a bad day, he won’t.
A former factory worker from the northern Venezuelan city of Maturin, he came to Brazil two months ago, almost starving. He rented a room with his brother, then they were evicted. The brothers had paid their rent, he said. “But I don’t think they liked Venezuelans.”
Now he’s sleeping on the street.
Despite his low prices, it’s hard to lure Brazilian customers. Many walk away, he said, when they hear his accent. One anti-migrant local threatened his brother with a gun.
At the end of a recent 17-hour workday, he had not sold a single cob or eaten a meal.
Asked how he was doing, he said: “Excellent. I’m still alive.”

Motorcycle cost monthly?

I do have a car license, so getting the motorcycle license should be short and sweet, but i dont know. secondly, i'm going to get some motorcycle gear. I figure I'll be in 500$ with both license and gear (nice used leathers probably). Then i am going to get the bike which costs $4000. Being a supermoto, the insurance should be cheaper right? DRZ400sm if that helps. So between monthly payments and insurance, I should be in... 200$ a month? then gas, social life, blah blah. What do you think I need to be making monthly to make this happen. I bring in 500$ a month, and have 600$ in the bank as of now.""

I was on a bike and I accidentally hit someone's car and broke the back windshield. Nothing else on the car is damaged except windshield. Later the car owner's car insurance company (state farm) send me a payment of $1700, and they have a subrogation service (Afni) to collect payment. The subrogation service has been pressuring me to pay the amount. I will pay for the damage but I don't believe I have to pay this much. Could this be the owner of the car falsify the claim? What is a bad credit score (and what to do about it)
What is a bad credit score (and what to do about it)
The world of credit scores can be confusing. It’s filled with esoteric jargon like “credit risk” and “FICO.”
I want to help you cut through all the BS and get down to one really important question:
What is a bad credit score?
The answer? Anything less than 670.
Anything below 670 and you’re at risk for higher interest rates on loans (if you get approved at all), getting denied an apartment rental, or even passed up on a job application.
But there is hope. You can improve your credit score even if your score is less than 670.
We know because we talked to someone who has been there.
How this entrepreneur crawled out of debt and escaped her bad credit score
Credit score then: 600 – 650
Credit score now: 789
Debt owed: $12,000 in credit card debt and $35,000 in student loans
Meet Kelsey Jones.
Kelsey is a writer, entrepreneur, and founder of a marketing company called Six Stories. Though her business is thriving and she and her husband are on solid financial footing, that wasn’t always the case.
In fact, her credit score took an absolute beating after college due to a problem that happens to many college students: They don’t understand how credit cards work.
This put her in a prime position to fall into debt and kill her credit score before she even graduated.
“I got one of those credit cards you get at a tent with a free t-shirt,” she says. “My parents told me nothing about credit card debt and managing money as I’m sure most don’t, so I had no idea how to manage a credit card and use it to my advantage.”
Due to her inexperience with cards, she didn’t understand the dangers. Like many people with bad credit, she was drawn in by flashy sign-up offers and bonuses. She wound up opening credit cards at stores such as American Eagle and Victoria’s Secret, as well as the major card companies like American Express and Discover.
This behavior eventually led to a sizeable amount of credit card debt. Kelly wound up owing roughly $12,000 in credit card debt when she graduated in 2008 on top of the $35,000 she owed for student loans.
Her credit score soon plummeted — and was further exacerbated by late payments.
“I sometimes paid my bills late because I just didn’t have enough money,” she says. “I was so broke when I graduated! I vividly remember my paychecks every two weeks were only $730. Meanwhile, I had to pay for my one-bedroom studio, car, cell phone, and all the other bills that come from truly being on your own.”
She adds, “My rent was almost the equivalent of one entire paycheck!”
I felt like I was “less than”
Being in debt and having your credit card debt can take a mental and emotional toll on you as well as a financial one. In fact, researchers have found that there’s a strong correlation between debt and mental health issues.
Debt can be both the cause and symptom of depression and anxiety — and it’s only exacerbated by the fact that many just want to ignore their financial problems.
“I buried my head in the sand for a long time,” she says. “I justified it for a while so I didn’t have to confront the angry feelings I had at myself for getting myself in that situation — specifically from credit card debt.”
For anyone who has ever been in debt, this feeling of anger and guilt should be familiar. When combined, it creates a potent mix that can be debilitating leading to inaction.
That’s why the first step in our system to getting out of debt fast is simply finding out how much you owe. When you confront your debt head-on, you provide yourself with a powerful mental boost that can help you eliminate it completely.
For Kelsey, though, that was easier said than done.
“I felt like I was ‘less than’ because I couldn’t get my shit together well enough to really take care of it,” Kelsey explains. “I felt so out of control of my life and wasn’t ready to be so broke after college. For some reason, I thought things would automatically get better, without me actually having to do anything.”
The wake-up call
It wasn’t until one day when her husband sat her down that she finally had a frank discussion about her finances: Something needed to change.
“Him coming to me about my debt was a wake-up call for me,” she says. “I couldn’t hide anymore.”
Debt is one of the biggest and most common barriers to living a Rich Life. And in their discussion, Kelsey realized that it was getting in the way of everything she and her husband wanted in their lives.
“I wanted to stop being a victim,” she says, “and dreading everything to do with money.”
Credit score improvement game plan
Kelsey’s plan to improve her credit score and escape her financial advice was threefold.
Step 1: Set a goal
First, Kelsey made the conscious decision to escape debt.
“I decided that this was it,” she says. “I was done being in debt. You have to make the conscious decision that you are done being ‘that person.’”
Though it may seem like a no-brainer, many people still put their heads in the sand and avoid their situation entirely — but that’s exactly what your lenders want you to do. They want you to avoid your statements. They want you to just pay off the minimum every month so you owe more interest. That’s how they make money.
Which is why one of our first steps in our credit score improvement system is to find out how much you owe. Once you do that, you’ll know how you can approach paying off your debts.
For Kelsey, the decision to confront her debt was a game changer.
“I went to Staples and bought a huge piece of poster board and bright markers and hung it up in my office,” she says. “I created a bar chart with months at the bottom and debt amount on the side. At the end of every month, I updated the poster board with different colors. It was awesome to see the bar graph trend down.”
Kelsey began to obsess over crushing her debt. She even leveraged this debt calculator spreadsheet whenever she made a financial transaction.
“I constantly updated it when I made payments and even made extra copies of it to test scenarios like ‘What would happen if I paid extra on my Discover card payment?’ or ‘What if I paid off this loan versus the other one?’” she explains. “Just knowing I could be debt-free in X number of months kept me going.”
Step 2: Pay down the debt by any means necessary
Kelsey also made sure that every piece of extra money she received went towards paying down her debt. This meant sacrificing a few things she loved in order to do it.
“We didn’t go on any trips and I didn’t go out to eat with friends as often as I used to,” she explains. “I still didn’t deprive myself, I simply cut down a little.”
She continues, “Any additional extra money, like tax returns, birthday gifts, and even the brand new MacBook I won in a contest, all went toward debt. It was extremely sad to ship that new MacBook to its new owner after I sold it on eBay — but I was obsessed.”
Step 3: Earn more money
Kelsey also leveraged a tried-and-true IWT method of attaining a Rich Life: Earning more money.
“I had my own digital marketing business at this time,” she recalls. “So the amount of money I made was completely up to me. I went into overdrive mode. I asked existing clients for more work and I sent pitch after pitch to potential new clients. I worked probably 50 hours a week … often until 9 or 10 at night and on the weekends, to hit my goals.”
The results
This diligence and hustle ultimately paid off when nearly two years later, she found herself debt-free.
“I still vividly remember sitting on my bed and submitting that last payment to Sallie Mae,” she says. “I promptly had a dance party in my bedroom for a few minutes, and then immediately started making my credit cards work for me.”
That meant putting in place a proven system of (say it with me):
“I set all recurring bills I could to be paid via credit card for the points and I paid off the balances completely each month,” Kelsey says. “Knowing how hard I worked to pay off that debt, I never wanted to get into that situation again. Now, about five years later, I still have never carried a balance over on a credit card more than one time.”
And to people with a low credit score, Kelsey has three pieces of advice:
Stop lying to yourself or justifying it. By confronting the uncomfortable truths about your credit score, you can take the steps to improve it. “Put yourself on an all cash budget or open a new checking account that only has your spending money for groceries, fun, etc.,” she suggests. “Your other checking account can be used to pay your credit card balances and other bills like rent.”
Ask yourself, “Where do I want to be a year from now?” It’s easy to make bad financial decisions when you don’t keep the end goal in mind. “Think about if going into more debt is worth it,” Kelsey says. “Will that new computer really make you feel better or will you feel worse because you’re even more behind on your debt?”
Think about your loved ones. Often times, debt doesn’t only affect you. It also affects your loved ones. “Having a child with our income and debt I had would’ve been irresponsible […] Think about how your debt could impact your spouse and your freedom as a family to make decisions and move forward in life.”
Now that Kelsey’s out of debt and she has a good credit score, she’s now in a great position to live her Rich Life.
What is a bad credit score?
Just like with Kelsey, a bad credit score can be emblematic of many financial issues. To understand why a credit score like 670 is bad though, you need to understand how credit scores work.
Your credit score is a number that lenders use to determine how much of a risk it is to lend to you.
This number will typically be between 300 and 850. The higher your credit score, the better you are situated for things like home and car loans.
The actual number is determined by the following information and their associated weight in relation to your score (credit score formula courtesy of Wells Fargo):
Payment history: 35%
Amounts owed: 30%
Length of credit history: 15%
How many types of credit in use: 10%
Account inquiries: 10%
Check out these ranges from Experian, one of the three main credit reporting bureaus, to see how your credit score shapes up:
800 – 850 (Great credit score). I want to take this credit score out to a nice seafood dinner, propose marriage to it, and live out our days in the country. It’s that good. If your credit score is in this range, you’ll have no problems getting a home loan or nailing a fantastic interest rate on your mortgage.
740 – 799 (Good credit score). The credit score you’d be happy to bring home to your parents. This is a pretty good spot to be. Though it’s not the best, you’ll still have no problem getting approved for loans and attaining good interest rates.
670 – 739 (Okay credit score). This credit score range is fine for the short term, but you’re going to want to upgrade soon. At this point, any hit to your credit score will be a bad one.
580 – 669 (Bad credit score). In this range, you’re considered a “subprime borrower,” which means you’re likely not to be considered for a loan at all and will struggle getting approved for simple things like apartments.
300 – 579 (Really bad credit score). Immediate swipe left on this credit score. In fact, delete the app entirely. You are a “deep subprime borrower” and won’t get any good rates and won’t likely get approved for any loans. You’ll want to stick around to find out how exactly you can improve your score.
If you want to be approved for any conventional mortgage, you’re going to need a credit score of at least 620. That’s why any credit score below 670 is a bad credit score. At that point, even the smallest hit to your credit score can affect your interest rates and loan approvals.
Miss a payment? Those missing payments affect 35% of your score.
Close down a credit card? That affects 10% of your score.
Even the lender simply opening up an inquiry to your credit hits your score by 10%.
That’s why it’s so important to be aware of your credit score and improve it when it’s bad.
“I have a bad credit score! What should I do?”
If your credit score is bad, you’re not alone. Nearly a third of Americans have a credit score of less than 600.
Also, there’s a chance that you might even be typical for your age range. Check out the average credit score by age as of early 2017 (courtesy of Time):

They’re probably not going to come up with an extra $100 for everyone on unemployment insurance.” The lowest-paid workers won’t qualify for the extra money. “They were low paid to begin with, and then being singled out for not getting this benefit I think is really cruel.” It isn’t clear why the $100 minimum was established. “Workers struggling to pay rent and buy groceries are not going to see benefits they were promised any time soon.” Workers are left in limbo.
