I don't think when people bring up watching "r rated movies" or whatever they mean like "Go watch blood and violence you pussy!!" (Wont deny some people do that lol but I think it comes from a place of hyperbole and frustration with the way media is consumed and discussed on here) But I think at least to me lol they mean engage with something catered to adult themes that doesn't so much hold your hand to understand it, yes that may involve violence, sexuality, etc but even then it shows the sort of limited scope some people have of more adult films to assume the use of these things is always done badly or purposefully cruelly.

Like yes, there are films that use violence, bloody imagery, sexuality, etc. egregiously but there are also many MANY films that use them respectfully and intelligently and which do contribute significantly to good and impactful storytelling. Writing every adult catered movie off as "Its just blood, sex, and substances" is too much of a reduction in the same way that acting like all children's media has nothing to say. They both have their merits. But I think it serves most of us well to be as curious and exploratory about film the way we should be about most art.

And yes, it may not always be comfortable even when these films are done well, but when it's done, when you find the right ones for you it will leave you at least incredibly satisfied and even moved in different ways you may have not experienced that's also worth it imo. And yes, sometimes it does take some digging and trial and error to find films that do this for you but like its also easy to go "Hmm don't enjoy this" and move on; point is at least you tried.
