man sonic’s theme songs make me so stupidly happy. it really sucks that we haven’t gotten any since colors
#lin.txt#sth#don’t ask what about fist bump bc that’s not a sonic theme#that’s a theme for the game itself#sort of like. uh. live and learn#live and learn isn’t sonic’s theme. it’s sa2’s theme#BUT sonic got his own theme in sa2 as well#it doesn’t matter#and like. they both worked. lal and the game’s theme and idm as sonic’s theme within the game#and forces doesn’t have that. fist bump is just the game’s theme#not that i don’t like fist bump. i do! it’s on my playlist and i think it’s a great theme for the game#i just wish we had more sonic themes. or that generations and lost world had ANY themes#it’s like a staple of the series was missing from both generations and lost world#....well a lot of things are missing from generations and lost world. especially lw#but i digress. it’s just sad that sonic’s themes ended with reach for the stars. i hope we get another one with the next game

warnings: this series contains themes of yandere\mafia, blood, violence, mental health, drugs, non-con.
author note: this is pure fiction and it is not intended to romanticize any of the situations mentioned bellow.
After two days, Jeno finally comes out of his room. you stop buffering your nails as you watch his door slowly opens, not knowing what to expect, your eyes follows him as he stumbles his way to the couch, his face buffed from too much sleep, you scan his appearance for any signs, maybe bruises or cuts but against all your expectations he looks normal, unaffected.
His eyes squinting to adjust to the lights, his gruff voice mumbles a greeting to you, he plops next to you disturbing your peaceful quietness.
“hey there stranger” you greet him back, he only smiles as he stares at the celling.
Nothing is said after that, tranquility fills the air, your attention is back to your nails as you hum a tone, he on the other hand, has closed his eyes to take a nap, as if he wasn’t sleeping a minute a go, his head is thrown to rest on the couch head rest, his eyes are closed, he looks clam and relaxed, with his breathtaking strong jaw and plumb lips, and those long eyelashes.. not fair.
When you were satisfied with your nails, you got up and walk past him to get your nail polish, but a set of hands grab your hips and pulls you back, you loss your balance, you stumble and fall in his lap. you were wrong about him napping, he is wide awake.
His strong grip shifts your hips until they were seating directly on top of his crotch, the intimate contact sparking your lust, his breathing hitches in your ear followed by a deep hum as he rolls his hips up and you push your hips down to meet his. your heart thumbs in your chest as it works double time, your body heat rises as you unravel in his arms, you feel him twitching beneath you as he’s growing harder beneath the you.
Both of your hips find a filthy rhythm to follow, your breathing heavens as you let your lust guid you, your eyes closing in bliss as all of your senes focusing on him, if he wants you, who are you to deny him now?.
you don’t remember his hands sneaking under your clothes, but you don’t mind, you are on the brink of losing your mind when they kneel your swollen breasts, you are about to start begging when jaemin’s loud voice interrupts you.
“hey hey! dick down she’s in time out” he points at jeno as he walks out of the door in a hurry, slamming the door behind him.
In another circumstances you would have been daed due to embracement, but the frustrations you were feeling was too much to care, you roll your eyes at his childish games, who the hell does he thinks he is? Not allowing you access to yourself..
“Time out?” Jeno halting all movements to question you “what did you do you naughty girl?” He chuckles in amusement.
“nothing.. don’t mind him” you turn in his arms to kiss him, but he dodges your lips “I'm not touching you until you tell me” he removes his hand crossing them over his chest, he sits back and smirks at your annoyed and needy huff, you mirror his poster and cross your arms over your chest staring at him, but he retaliates with a harsh slap on your ass, catching you of guard, he demands an answer.
you cant help but to gasp at the stinging pain his hand left, you answer him in defeat “he caught me touching myself” avoiding his eyes, he bursts laughing at your confession making your face turns red in humiliation, you hit his chest and push yourself off of him but he grabs your thighs and pull you back on him.
“Hmmm so he caught you playing with yourself and he’s punishing you” he contemplates and bites his lower lips, his eyes studying your mortified features, you can see the devil works a plan in his head.
“well, I'm not him” he flicks his eyebrow, his hands moves your hips to shift you to sit on his thigh, he leans closer to you, his nose traces the skin under your ear, inhaling you in a deep breath. “move” his whispers to you, his hands tightening their hold on your hips as his thigh muscles flexes under you providing a better friction, he helps you grinding over his thigh.
you gasp at the unexpected feeling, its faint but its there. you start to rut his thigh establishing your own pace, your hands claw his shoulders for support. a moan erupts from you when a the fabrics rubs against your erect clit. his hands move to cup your ass adding you, your head’s thrown back in ecstasy, your mind swimming in pleasure, you didn’t register his lips that were busy sucking a hickey on your neck, your moves becomes more frantic as you become desperate for a release, you call his name begging for it as your legs falter making you lose your rhythm, he slaps your ass again ushering you to keep riding him, you bury your face into his neck and resume your movements, you enjoy the faint orgasm as it hits you, its so faint that it doesn’t last more than seconds, if any thing it’s mocking you. your mind still colluded with need, you pant as you try to recompose yourself again, you left your head and look at him, his hand cradle your face “you’er such a bad girl, jaemin will be disappointed in you”. his name clicks in your head as you have forgotten about him, your mind blanking leaving your mouth hanging open, you want to say something, anything but you’er unable.
Your thoughts started to race with images of his disappointed face, would he be mad at you? Of course he would, disgusted? Why wouldn’t he be?. All the worry bubbling inside of you mixing with the strong lustful hunger, producing a tearful mess, you stumble on your words not knowing where to begin to explain yourself, your quivering lips felt too pathetic to be witnessed, but he keeps quite as he’s watching you as you fall apart, you realize that he got you in the palm of his hand, playing you.
“Aww” he coos at you,“don’t worry we’ll keep it a secret, out secret” the pad of his thumb wipe a fallen tear.
you shake your head “hell know”.
the amused smile never left his face, he licks his lips “just tell him I forced you”,
his proposed solution sounds like a believable excuse to you, you agree to it nodding while sniffling, and before you could thank him he speaks again,
“now be a good girl for me and suck me of” he lefts you off of him, you oblige and get in between his legs and kneel in front of tent in his pants, both of your hands work on his sweatpants to free him, you wrap your hand around him and give him few bumps, he shivers in reaction to your touch, he hands your head bringing you closer. “you look so pretty when you cry” he mutters as you take him into your mouth, he hiss in pleasure and his hands fists your hair, he lets you suck him off but it’s not enough for him, he wants more and it shows in his rough actions. he pushes your head down, hitting the back of your throat making you chock around him, and new wave of tears breaks out of your eyes..

What I Thought About "Hunting Palismans" From The Owl House
Salutations, random people on the internet who certainly won’t read this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
Today, I present to you reason #4,693 for why The Owl House is the best thing at the moment: It's the perfect balance of serialized storytelling with an episodic format. The story always moves forward with an exact order for how episodes should be watched, but each episode still functions as its own standalone tale. Having prior knowledge of what happened before adds more to the experience, but you can still watch whatever you want and still have an enjoyable time. Take "Hunting Palismans," for example. It adds so much more to the overarching narrative while slightly continuing other threads. But it's still something you can watch as is without remembering the past or wondering about the future.
However, to properly explain how requires spoilers. I wasn't kidding when I say that this episode adds so much, so you're going to want to be wary of that when you continue reading.
With that said, let's review, shall we?
WHAT I LIKED
Coven Heads Meeting: We already saw these fellow schmucks in the trailer, but that doesn't take away how cool they are! It's not explicitly stated which head belongs to which coven, but you can already tell who goes where just from their designs alone. And I love that. I love that just by showing us some excellent character designs, anybody with half a brain can already figure out the particular type of magic each Coven Head specializes in. It's a perfect example of the show-don't-tell level of storytelling that is always at its best through animation, and I'm all for it because of it.
What the Day of Unity is: Several fans, myself included, have already speculated that the Day of Unity was that Emperor Belos planned to combine the human world with the Boiling Isles and rule it all with an iron fist. That being said, figuring it out is one thing, but being told that it's true is a whole different level pants-s**ting horror that I AM NOT READY FOR! Even when it's going to happen, I can assure you that I will not be prepared to witness it ...and I am scared of when it does.
Belos Body Horror: ...Disney, I was already scared s**tless of this guy. I DO NOT NEED THIS!
That being said, seeing Belos do...whatever the f**k that was, helps explain further why he needs the magic in palismans. I always assumed because it's like fuel for a car, giving him the power he needs. Now, even though the answer is more apparent, there are still some questions to be had. Is he cursed, and the magic keeps it at bay like Eda's potions? Or did he experiment with the wrong type of magic, and the palismans keep him stable? Only the future can say for sure...and I'm also not prepared for the answers from that either.
Golden Guard is Belos’ Nephew: Gosh dangit, THE INTRO HASN'T EVEN STARTED YET, AND THIS EPISODE IS ALREADY GIVING SO MUCH!
But, yeah, the most powerful witch on the Isles is apparently Golden Boy's Grunkle Belos. That very knowledge is incredibly interesting to discuss while presenting possibilities for future narratives. I don't know about you, but I see the Golden Guard going down the path of Zuko, learning that the magic of friendship is worth much more than whatever power he gains from being Belos' nephew. And possibly earning his uncle's love seeing how he's the only family he has. It's a situation that's vastly different from Amity's because even when she defies her parents, she'll still have Edric and Emira at the end of the day. For Golden Guard, knowing that he lost a great family to wild magic, the inclination to go against Belos is a lot weaker due to him being all he has left.
Oh, and also, Belos' family getting wiped out because of wild magic. Yeah, not only does that give the best type of motivation for Belos' distaste for it, but it also explains the Golden Guard's hesitance to use it. He's inclined to so he can save his uncle, sure. It's only the fact that he knows what happens with wild magic that causes some resistance...Also, we're less than a minute in, and I'm already getting all of this from one discussion between two characters.
HOW IS THIS SHOW SO GOOD?!
Intro Changes: It's about time too. It seems weird that the crew waited to change Eda and King's designs in the intro this late in the game, but it also tells me that Amity dying her hair lavender is the last huge change this season will present. Otherwise, why change the intro at all if you were going to alter Luz, Willow, and Gus' designs anyway? It just doesn't make sense to me.
Luz Keeping the Echo Mouse as a Pet: The fact that she keeps the most important creature in the world to her as a pet...it's...it's adorable, alright? And as we established several times, I cannot hate adorable things.
Don't judge me!
Amity Staying Home: There are two plausible ways why Amity didn't go to school that day. Either she's getting punished for dying her hair or because she's trying to avoid Luz so they won't talk about the you-know-what. Either could work and seem understandable to Luz, thus explaining why she admits how "that makes sense." Although, there is something to discuss in how Luz is curious as to where Amity is. Judging from the tone of her voice, it's pretty clear that she wants to talk about the little peck on the cheek and maybe get some confirmation as to what it means. Because there is no going back from that. You can explain away saying or doing something stupid, but you cannot un-kiss a cheek. That is a point of no return, and if Amity really is avoiding Luz because of it, that means it's up to our favorite weirdo to make the first move. As for what that may entail...we'll just have to wait and see.
Frewin: We get two bits of information here for the price of one reveal here. Knowing that Frewin is a palisman is shocking enough, but the knowledge that Bump is partially blind and needs Frewin to see? That is an intriguing piece of intel that I would have never expected to get revealed. This is reason #5,279 for what makes The Owl House so good. Even when the show presents information you wouldn't guess, it's all so interesting anyways that you can't help but go along with it.
Adopting Palismans: First of all, love the fact that the Bat Queen makes a return to provide a solution to the palisman trees being rare and solving her own problem regarding the discarded palismans. It's a situation where everyone wins in a way that is so clever that I can't help but admire it.
Second, the idea of students choosing to adopt palismans instead is cute. I'd say it gives further insight into who these characters are in how they say what they want to be, but there's nothing really new added that fans couldn't figure out from the get go. But I will say that it's pretty cool to know that these characters have official staffs now. Speaking of which, if you're upset that their palismans don't match up with your headcanons...grow up.
This was a cute and smartly written scene that should not be bogged down by whiney fans who can't accept a series doing something different from what they expect.
Little Rascal: I’d take a bullet for this bird. That is all.
Luz Being Uncertain of her Future: A lot of fans offer several ideas of what the future could look like for Luz. Will she stay in the Boiling Isles? In Connecticut? Or will she go back and forth? We don't know, but one question we rarely brought up is what does Luz want? More specifically, what does she want to do? After everything Luz went through, the adventures she's gone on, and the lessons learned, what is something that Luz wants her future to be? That's an answer she doesn't really figure out, and I'm genuinely ok with that being a question that's tabled for another day. Most kids who ask that question themselves aren't always going to find an answer after a short amount of time and sometimes even need to spend their lives trying to figure it out. So having it be something Luz has to consider and probably find out in a future episode is the smarter option, as it allows time for it to simmer in her own mind and provides more insight into her character. As stated several times in this episode, she doesn't think things through, so it's nice that the writers finally allowed her some time to wonder what's next when the adventure is over.
Luz Having to Improvise Without Paper Glyphs: You want to know what my favorite Spider-Man moments are (this is relevant. Trust me). My favorite moments are when Spidey's web-shooters run out of fluid, and he's forced to improvise with that big brain of his to find a solution. That's sort of what happens with Luz in "Hunting Palismans." She didn't bring her glyphs with her (why would she), so she's forced to use the environment around her to make new ones. Plus, Luz also flexes her knowledge of the Boiling Isles by mixing her glyphs with a magical plant (which Willow certainly told her about) so that she and the Golden Guard could knock out Kikimora's dragon. It's yet another showcase of her intelligence that a lot of fans are too keen to overlook. Unfortunate to see, too, because looking at how well Luz can craft the perfect solutions by fighting smarter, not harder, is a fantastic add-on to her personality. I love characters who win through their wits rather than their raw powers, and I once again hope more people will catch onto that aspect of her too.
Golden Guard Whistling the Theme: Look, I love it when a show acknowledges its own theme song, ok? Leave me alone.
Luz and the Golden Guard: This is one of those dynamics you didn't know you wanted until you have it. And now that I have it, I DEMAND MORE!
Seriously, seeing these two interact off of each other was a ton of fun to watch. When Luz and GG are initially at each other's throats, their threats and mockery towards one another aren't out of spiteful anger between two mortal enemies. It's more like...two siblings who get on each other's nerves yet are supposed to deal with one another. It's equally adorable and hilarious, and yes, I absolutely loved that they're forced to work together in this episode because of it.
Although, while the entertainment value is fantastic, it also adds more proof of why Luz is the best character in the series. She spends one night with this guy, and that's more than what she needed to make a difference with him. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they're buddies now, but Luz definitely sowed the seeds into his redemption. He's far from willing to join her side, but he still does something he rarely does with anyone else: He told her that his name is Hunter. And this is what Luz does. Through nearly every person she meets on the Boiling Isles, she always manages to change them for the better. It'll be a while before Hunter deflects from Belos, but if Amity proves anything, Luz has a way of sneaking into people's hearts. They just need to spend more time with one another, and I can't wait to see what happens next because of it.
Kikimora Wanting to Kill Hunter: This shows a lot about who Kikimora is, but it potentially proves just how dysfunctional the Emperor's Coven can be. If Kiki proves anything, the coven must be filled with people willing to backstab and cheat their way to get on Emperor Belos' good side. Just look at Lilith. She literally cursed her own sister just to get in and received all the rewards because of it. The Emperor's Coven may be the best choice for witches to do magic, but if you're surrounded by people you can't trust, then is it really worth it?
The Guards Not Knowing Who Hunter is: This helps add to how much of a big deal it is for Hunter to reveal his name to Luz. If people can't even recognize his face, there's a chance it means that he keeps his true identity a secret except for those in his inner circle.
And the coven guards brushing off his brand is more than believable to me. They may be aware that Belos' right hand is young, but teens will be teens. Anybody with enough artistic talent can fake a brand. So it isn't too far off for those two to think Hunter was just a kid pulling a prank.
Hunter is Powerless Without his Staff: Not much to say here. It's just some more neat insight into Hunter's character that makes me wonder if even Belos' magic is real magic.
But I will say this: The fact that Hunter comes from a lineage of powerless witches, well, who's to say that isn't because of a...certain ancestor?
(*Cough* Hunter is related to Philip *Cough*)
Hunter vs Kiki: A pretty well-animated fight scene that adds potential drama to the story for the future. Now that Kikimora knows that Hunter helped Luz escape with the palismans (albeit unwillingly), she may or may not hold that over his head when the time comes. Or, at the very least, decides to keep a closer eye on him whenever he makes a slip-up.
Eda and King Getting Luz her own Palisman Wood: These last two weeks have been severely lacking in the Eda and King department, but scenes like this more than make up for it. Those two have formed such a bond with Luz to the point where they would do the impossible if it meant she would feel better. It proves just how much of a family they all are and the lengths they would go for each other. After all, weirdos have to stick together.
Little Rascal going to Hunter: Hunter is right. That was surprising.
Given how much Little Rascal stuck by Luz, I was more than positive that she would be the one he chose. So seeing Little Rascal pick Hunter instead is a much nicer twist. There could be multiple reasons why, and I'm just going to leave that to the analyzers in this fandom to decide. Especially since the answer isn't really all that important.
So, instead, I'm going to go ahead and sit in the corner as I wOrRy AbOuT tHe DaY tHaT bElOs FiNdS lItTlE rAsCal!
IT'S GONNA HAPPEN! AND I SWEAR TO ALL THAT IS HOLY, IF THE WRITERS KILL HIM, I WILL NOT BE HAPPY!
WHAT I DISLIKED
First, there's...um...
Well, there was this...
Ok, as much as I liked--No, that turned out well anyways...
…
...
...I've got nothing.
I, honest to goodness, have no complaints about "Hunting Palismans" Not even the tiniest of nitpicks I would usually ignore due to how well-executed everything else was.
It's all written fantastically to the point where it's...perfect.
IN CONCLUSION
"Hunting Palismans" is an easy A+. It introduces even more plot threads, gives insight into characters, and despite being essential to the story, it still manages to be a fun episode all on its own. And, I'd go so far as to say that it's one of the best, if not the best, episodes in the series. There's nothing bad about it, and that surprises me. I rarely find nothing bad to say about any story, even the ones I enjoy greatly. I'm sure there are some flaws that others would be more than happy to point out, but why bother hunting for the imperfections when I could accept that, for once, an episode is simply perfect.
(And that’s six hits in a row...THAT STINKER IS GOING TO HAPPEN! It hasn’t happened yet, BUT IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN! I CAN FEEL IT!)

-Embers- (1)
warnings: suggestive, future smut, themes of death
wc: 5.3k
teaser
White specks of paint, scattered across an inky sky - they truly were beautiful. You adjusted yourself on the grassy hill, eyes closing as you tried to calm your nerves. Sighing, you ran your hand over crimson scales, trying to ignore the blinding lights of your village in the distance.
“The stars are beautiful tonight.”
You wished you could stay here forever. Where the only sounds that grace your ears are the deep rumbling snores of the enormous draconian creature you're curled up against. It's a comforting sound, and yet you knew you were going to have to leave soon. Your father would be absolutely enraged if you were late to such an important event- in fact, you were sure he’d have absolutely no qualms killing you in front of the entire village and crowning a broomstick as his heir instead.
Perhaps that's why you delayed the inevitable for a little longer, nuzzling your head against the dragon's hide. Your heart was pounding in your chest as you observed your bustling village from above, frantically getting ready for the festival and the welcoming. People were decorating their houses, painting murals onto their walls and making sure everything was perfect for the guests that would arrive tonight.
The streets were lit up with lanterns, and the people milling about outside their houses were dressed up in their best. The excitement in the atmosphere was palpable, and you could almost feel it from atop the hill.
Sighing, you looked to the side, your eyes meeting enormous yellow ones.
“Aeracus...I know what you’re thinking.” You sighed and curled up your knees to your chest. “And you’re right. I’m nervous, but also excited. I can’t believe we’re going to be seeing him again after all these years. Can you?”
The dragon slowly shook his head from side to side, and you chuckled. “Do you think he’s changed? Or do you think he’s still a feline-obsessed asshole?” You smiled, his laughter ringing in your ears as you reminisced.
Slowly though, the good memories bled into terrible ones. Loss and pain, mingling in your heart and taking over your emotions. The smile disappeared from your face as you remembered what had happened. The reason he left. The reason you weren’t allowed to participate in the championships that were to be a part of the festival’s celebrations...the reason the whole village considered you an outcast, despite being the chief’s daughter.
You swallowed the lump in your throat, pushing your hair back as you slowly stood up, dusting off your tunic. You pressed a kiss to the dragon’s neck, sighing.
“I’m going to go, Aeracus. Honestly, you should be grateful you don’t have to partake in these events.”
The dragon let out a disapproving rumble at that, and your face softened. That was a low blow. After all, it wasn’t his fault that he was forced to to refrain from joining his fellow dragons in the games. No, the blame was to be shared between you and Minho.
The felicity in your heart was intertwined with a faint sense of lingering sorrow. It happened so many years ago, and yet the echoes were still fresh in your mind...
You couldn’t deny that you were desperate to see him again. In fact, saying you were desperate would probably be an understatement. You were thrilled, electrified- and yet, oh so anxious.
You clenched your fists, taking in a deep breath and starting to descend the hill. You’d put it off for long enough.
***
“Children, listen carefully, now.”
The boy next to you didn’t heed the elder’s warning, continuing to draw on the back of his hand.
“Minho! Pay attention, or I will have to call your father.”
Minho looked up, scowling. He placed the chalk down and pursed his lips, directing his attention towards the clay figurines that were laid out in front of the elderly woman. You, as well as the 10 other kids in the cottage, were fascinated by the story being told. The woman was teaching you about your culture, the information you needed to know regarding the upcoming ceremony. It was important, and yet Minho couldn’t bring himself to care. He liked cats more than dragons anyway.
“As I was saying.” She cleared her throat, resuming her lesson.
“Now that you children are 13, you are no longer babies. Certain things are expected of you. You have embarked on your journey to adulthood...and thus, there are certain things you must know. The elements of our village, for one.”
She gestured to the figurines on the dirt floor in front of her. “As you all already know, there are four elements.” She pointed to a spiky pyramid, and then to a smooth sphere. “Ember, Aqua...” Her fingers moved to the next pair- a rough cube and a glassy cone. “...Terra and Aer. These are the symbols of the elements. Of course, you all have already seen the life-sized versions of these in our square.”
Eager nods, making her continue with a pleased smile.
“Every dragon on this planet has a corresponding element that they have control over. They possess immense power, and the ability to command these elements.”
Minho raised an eyebrow, intrigued. Hm, maybe this wasn’t as lame as he’d thought it would be..
“I’m sure you children have seen your parents, older friends and relatives with their dragons.” There was a chorus of agreement, and the woman nodded.
“Well, from next week onwards, you will each have your own dragons. Through the ceremony, you will all be assigned a hatchling, with which you will spend the rest of your life.”
Minho hummed in curiosity as the woman dismissed the class. “Good luck, loves. Remember, there will be a few more classes to brief you further.”
The others started filing out slowly as you turned to Minho. “Isn’t this exciting?” You tilted your head, running your eyes over the figurines. “Since my family are all fire elementals, do you think I’ll get an ember dragon?”
“I don’t think it works that way. My father said it doesn’t matter what family you come from, the dragon you get matched with can be of any element, apparently. Though it hasn’t ever happened yet.” He shrugged.
“Really?”
“Yeah.” He yawned. “I already knew everything she said. I could have used this valuable time for something else.” He was lying, to be honest. The only thing he knew about dragons was what he’d just told you.
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. Do you wanna go to the lake?”
You grinned. “Sure, let’s!” You nodded in agreement as Minho stood up eagerly, grabbing your hand and pulling you out of the cottage. You giggled as he dragged you. “Hey, slow down! Also, we can’t be there for long. We’ve got to be home for that joint dinner, or our fathers will be very mad.”
“Eh, they’d barely notice if we’re gone. When discussing village matters, they don’t give a fuck about their own children, even.” He muttered bitterly.
“Well...that is true.” You sighed as Minho pulled you all the way to the lake, weaving past the villagers, even bumping into some of them. A few of them frowned and made shouts of displeasure, while others didn’t seem to mind. Or maybe they did, and was just too afraid to voice their anger towards the chiefs’ children.
The cottages start becoming more sparse, the trees more tightly clustered. Minho held your hand tightly as you made your way through the woods. Finally, the two of you reached the clearing.
Letting go of your hand gently, Minho sat at the edge of the lake, beckoning you over to sit next to him.
“I wish this place wasn’t so far away from the village.” You sighed, legs aching as you flopped down onto the grass.
Minho shook his head slowly, his fingers fiddling with a tiny dandelion he’d pulled out. “The further away, the better.” He grumbled, blowing on it and watching as the seeds floated in the breeze.
You sighed. There it was, again. You knew better than to oppose him, so you hummed, scooting a little closer and placing your hand on top of his. “I know you want to leave this place. I know you want to...to explore the world. I just want you to know that whatever you decide to do, I’ll be by your side.” You said honestly.
Minho looked up at you. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
He felt like there was a lump in his throat. Minho knew how much this village and its culture meant to you. You were really willing to do that for him? Leave, and never come back?
“Listen here, Miss L/n.” He turned to you, inhaling as he pressed a kiss to your forehead, his lips soft as they brushed against your skin. You blushed, staring at him with wide eyes as he spoke.
“I’m the one who’s going to be making the sacrifices here, alright? I’m older than you, remember? I call the shots.” He chuckled, booping your nose.
“I love you so much, star.”
You cringed at the nickname, shoving him away. “Stop calling me that, you sound like a character in one of Mr Yang’s cheesy novels.”
He smirked at that. “I’ll never stop calling you that. You’re my star, cause you light up my world and guide me when everything’s dark.” He reasoned, laughing and throwing his head back as he watched you wrinkle your nose in disgust, looking a little like a bunny.
Humming, Minho lay back on the grass, and you followed suit after a minute of hesitation.
“I don’t mind you calling me that. Just don’t do it in front of people.”
“Okay, I won’t. It’s just us all the time, anyway...”
The two of you stared up at the sky, listening to the calm sounds of frogs ribbiting, birds chirping, and the splashing sounds of the fish in the lake. Above it all though, was the sound of your heart, beating persistently as Minho’s fingers creeped closer to yours, intertwining your hands.
“It’s always us...”

Your father had explained to you that since your family consisted entirely of ember elementals, your dragon would be of the same kind as well. This went against what Minho had told you before, and your mind was swimming with all the different information you were receiving.
“But...Minho said it doesn’t work that way.”
He sat on his armchair, chewing on a chicken leg as he raised an eyebrow. “Really? Well, he’s wrong.” He sighed, shaking his head. “It’s never happened in centuries, and it’s not gonna happen now. You’re an Ember, through and through.”
You purse your lips. “Well, you’re always right, Father.”
He nodded, not picking up on the snark your sentence was dripping with. "The bond you share with your dragon is one that can never be replicated. You choose it, and it chooses you. It is truly a beautiful process, a spectacle to behold. Every single villager will be watching, so you better hold your head high. Make me proud."
You were about to reply when you heard a knock on your door. Glancing at your father for permission, you stood up. heading through the long hallway to open the front door.
“Minho?”
You looked at him, tilting your head at his troubled expression. “What’s up?
“I came to give you these.” He said softly, looking around before showing you the fiery petals in his palms. “I borrowed a herbology book from the library a few months ago, and learnt how to grow these. Ignis flowers. They’re symbols of good luck, apparently.”
He took your hand, placing the petals on your palm. “They reminded me of you.”
Your eyes widened slowly. “Wow...Minho, I didn’t get you anything...” You said guiltily, humming when Minho gently pulled you into a hug.
“You don’t have to. I’ve got to go home, now. See you tomorrow!”
You nodded, the petals safe in your hands as he left hurriedly. You watched him head to his house, opposite to yours.
After he left, you were about to head to bed when your father asked you to stay back. Confused, you went over to sit in front of him, tilting your head in confusion.
“Who was at the door?”
“It was just Minho.” You shrugged, eyeing your father as he groaned, massaging his forehead. He looked like he was contemplating something, his wrinkles seeming especially prominent.
"Child, be wary of your...friend."
"Friend...?" You knew he meant Minho. You'd never heard him address him in that manner though - void of affection.
Minho's father and yours were co-chiefs of the village, best friends since birth. He’d always treated Minho like his own son. What had brought on this sudden hostility?
He noticed the expression on your face, sighing and patting your shoulder. "I'm just asking you to be careful, dear. There is talk of the Aer elementals gaining power at an accelerated rate these days. Aer dragons are growing up to be stronger, even more so than our Ember ones. It's truly a strange phenomenon. I do not want to be one of these people who is suspicious of everything and everyone...but both the kid and his father have changed. Even I can't deny that."
You swallowed at his words, watching as his face drifted off, deep in thought. You'd heard of it too- hushed whispers claiming that a single chief would be preferable for the village. And if your father's hunch was right...no, you didn't want to think about it.
Minho wouldn't ever betray you. You'd known him since before you could talk. you’d build up a lot of trust in each other over the years. There was no one else you knew as well. If you couldn’t trust him, who could?
No. He would never hurt you. You were sure of it.
***
The whole village was buzzing for weeks after the ceremony took place. They simply couldn't understand what had happened. It was unprecedented- and the news spread like wildfire.
You were matched with a majestic Aer creature, and Minho a beautiful crimson beast of Ember. Mistakes weren't possible- the process was never questioned- but that didn't mean people weren't bewildered.
For centuries, no one had managed to match with a dragon that controlled an element that differed from theirs.
Neither of you could understand why your fathers and the villagers were so perplexed, though. Was it really as big of a deal as they made it seem?
"I don't get it. Why is it such a humongous problem? They’re just dragons. What’s the need for all this drama?" Minho rolled his eyes as he spoke.
You stroked your dragon's neck slowly as you watched him, huffing and ranting away. ‘Just dragons.’ There was a part of you that understood all the hubbub. The people loved gossip- especially if it involved the chiefs.
"It really isn't. They're both so beautiful, I don't really care what element they control."
You looked at your dragon, curled next to you. You wouldn't admit it, but she looked a little too beautiful- almost to the point where it intimidated you.
Translucent, white scales that reflected rainbows of light...long, beautiful almond shaped eyes that were the color of the ocean. She was larger and brighter than Minho's dragon as well. Your father had been right...the Aer dragons were evolving quicker, somehow.
She was quiet and regal, her sleek body elegant and her demeanor refined. You didn’t really have much in common, to be honest. You’d named her Caeli- a name that wasn’t really all that creative, but it would do. Besides, it seemed to fit.
Minho looked at you, sighing slowly. "Aeracus seems hungry. Father will be expecting me soon anyway, I think I'll go home now, Y/n."
"Bye, Min."
He shot you a dashing grin before standing up, climbing his dragon.
As they left, a great whoosh of wind rustling your hair, you looked up at your dragon. She was staring at the water, her eyes narrowed.
You were starting to feel a little worried. You couldn’t exactly...hear her thoughts. She seemed too closed off, barely even looking at you as she blankly watched the frogs jump from one lilypad to the other. You didn’t feel that special bond everyone had been talking about for years, insisting to you that it would be a connection so profound you wouldn’t be able to live without it.
Did she not like you? You looked so average next to her ethereality, drab and plain as opposed to her stunning beauty.
You couldn’t blame her, really.
***
When Minho stood next to your dragon, the sight somehow made more sense. He was beautiful, and so was the creature next to him. They fit together perfectly.
Aeracus on the other hand, was slightly more average. He was majestic as well, but not on the same level as Caeli. You felt more at home riding him, somehow. Like...he was the one that was meant to be yours.
Of course, you wouldn’t ever tell anyone about this. It could be considered infidelity, even. Your father was disappointed enough in you as it was. Four years of training with Caeli, and you still weren’t able to channel her power into...anything. She just wouldn’t co-operate.
"There you go..." He finished slipping the harness onto Caeli, dusting off his hands as he came back over to you, giggling as Aeracus rubbed his big head against your side.
Minho raised his eyebrows at the display of affection. Aeracus was never that amicable to him. Yes, he listened to him...but that was about it. And yet, to you...he always noticed how the two of you seemed to have some sort of connection. He’d mentioned this to his father once, only to be called ridiculous.
Then again, he couldn’t blame the dragon for having a soft spot for you. Who wouldn’t?
“Hey...” He looked down at you as the dragon pulled away, ambling off to Caeli’s side. You glanced up slowly when Minho cleared his throat, leaning in a little as his fingers ran through your tresses. Your cheeks flushed, eyes widening slightly at his touch.
"A leaf. In your hair." He mumbled, throwing said leaf onto the ground as he stared into your eyes.
Your heart was thudding loudly in your chest as your gaze ran over his features, so close to your face. Fuck, he was so deathly handsome, even more so now that you were both almost adults. Puberty had treated him well.
A little too well.
The girls in the square swooning over Minho became a regular occurrence now. You couldn't even seem to go anywhere with your best friend, without having a mob of fangirls following closely.
When he was this close to you, it became overwhelmingly evident why his fans were so enamored by him. Lee Minho really was beautiful.
"Careful, a fly might make its nest in your mouth." He chuckled. "What's up, kitten? You look on edge."
That was the other thing. His latest habit of calling you pet names- the likes of which included princess and kitten- had come out of nowhere. He really seemed to enjoy making you blush. At times like this, you wished he would have just stuck with ‘star’.
“Nothing.” You stuttered, avoiding his eyes and choosing to focus your stare on the ground. Minho wasn’t in the mood for your shyness, though. He placed his finger under your chin, tilting your face up to look at him.
“You sure about that? Is there a reason you look so flustered right now?” He breathed, leaning in closer until your noses were brushing.
Oh, fuck you, Lee.
You'd always thought Minho was attractive. Of course. You'd be blind not to notice. And yet, at this proximity, you felt like you haven’t ever truly appreciated just how fucking hot the man in front of you was.
And so you did something you never thought you’d have the courage to do.
Leaning in, you closed the distance between the two of you, lips crashing against his. To Minho’s credit, he wasn’t all that shocked. Smirking against you, his arms wrapped around your waist as he pulled you closer, gluing your body to his.
Backing you up against a tree, Minho was quick to lift your thigh, slotting your hips together as he ran his tongue over your bottom lip.
A groan left you as he slid his hand under your shirt, pulling away to stare at you, the sight of your swollen lips affecting him in ways he couldn’t quite describe.
“What...what did we just-”
He shut you up with another kiss, rougher than the last one. Breathless pecks, desperately claiming you with his lips as he pressed himself against you.
“Just go with the flow, baby.”
And so you did.
***
As you carefully made your way down, your mind was racing with a million thoughts. The thought of seeing your boyfriend again after so many years scared you as much as it excited you. After all...it wasn’t like you parted on good terms.
You still remembered the heartbroken look on his face, the last time you saw him. You couldn’t tell him that you’d tried everything, tried your best to reason with your father who simply refused to budge. He’d expected you to do something more...but what?
It wasn’t his fault. It was a fucking accident, and yet he’d had to take the blame.
Deep down, though, you knew what your father’s real intentions had been when he banished Minho and his father from the village. Of course, Caeli’s death had shaken him- the entire village had been in a state of shock. The death of a dragon was the most tragic event that could possibly befall a village. And when said dragon happened to belong to the chief’s daughter? Shattering.
At the end of the day though, it was a convenient incident...one that happened to take place just as your father’s status was being questioned. A blessing in disguise, for him.
“It’s okay, my child. Yes, you suffered a great loss, but I know you weren’t that close to it. We must move on. On the bright side, you can focus on your studies now! Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted to do?”
You scoffed, his words repeating themselves in your brain. Bullshit. There was no bright side, nor would there ever be one without Minho in your life.
***
“There you are. Where were you?"
"I...was with Aeracus." You didn't see the point in lying. Your brain was too tired to come up with a believable fabrication anyway.
As expected, his face screwed up in anger as he glared, standing up.
"Why?" He hissed. "Let me remind you he is not your dragon. How many times have I told you not to get too close to it?"
"Aeracus and I have a bond." You mumbled.
"No. You don't. A bond is forged between a dragon and its owner by forces beyond our control. This measly 'friendship', if you can even call it that, is trivial. At the end of the day, it doesn't really belong to you. It belongs to the boy who betrayed you."
You couldn't bring yourself to react any more. Your father was old-fashioned, his opinions set in stone. ‘Betrayed’. You wanted to scoff.
You turned around without a word, heading for your room. There was no energy left in your body, yet the exhaustion was overpowered by your emotions.
"Y/n, wait."
You stopped, turning and looking at him. "What?"
"Your maids are waiting to dress you. Don't argue with them. You are to wear the outfit I picked out for you. Today's dinner is extremely important." He paused. "And...what I said before still stands. The dragon won't hesitate to betray you, especially now that his true owner is coming back. Be...be careful." Your father said quietly, his face softening.
You sighed. "I will be."
"Good."
He dismissed you. You heaved a sigh of relief under your breath and headed out, opening the door to your own room.
You would never admit this to your father, but as nervous as you were, you were secretly looking forward to the dinner. To see him again.
If you closed your eyes and immersed yourself deep enough into your imagination, you could still feel his touch ghosting along your thighs. His soft lips, pressing against yours.
You missed his voice, his tight hugs...you missed everything about him. You'd only ever felt safe in his arms.
The loneliness and pain had consumed you when he left. Maybe that's why you latched on to Aeracus, the last remnant of Minho in this village that seemed so much more dreary without his presence.
"Miss Y/n! We have no time to lose." Your head maid scurried about your room with two others, spreading out your dress on your bed. One of the maids- Sylvia, you think her name was- snuck up behind you and began undressing you. Yes, you were used to this, but the layer of urgency in the atmosphere was a lot more profound tonight.
The entire village was on edge, and you couldn’t really blame them. The first Elemental Championships, and they were being hosted at your village. The exhilaration was understandable...you couldn't bring yourself to feel the same way, though. Maybe if you were actually participating, you’d feel different.
You looked at the dress the maid was holding onto, initially without much interest...but your eyes widened when it came into view.
It was beautiful, yet simple...the color of spun gold, with tiny rubies clustered at the bodice. The sleeves fell of the shoulders delicately, and the material was diaphanous, the texture rich.
“Wow....Sylvia, you made this?”
“I did. It took me a year.” She smiled widely, your grin satisfying her. “Do you really like it, Miss Y/n?” There was a hopeful lilt to her voice, and your grin grew wider as they started helping you into it.
“Like it? I love it! You’ve really outdone yourself this time.”
She nodded in content, lacing up the back as the other maids began on your makeup. Usually, you didn’t like being treated as a doll, your servants fussing over you and your appearance. Today, though...
You could barely believe the reflection you were seeing in the mirror belonged to you. You'd never felt so glamorous before.
“You look beautiful, Miss.” Sylvia said softly, adjusting your sleeves.
You couldn’t wait for Minho to see you in this dress.
“Ann?” Another servant’s head appeared around the corner. “It’s time. They will arrive any moment now.”
A flurry of anxious noises and exclamations filled the room as they worked on you faster. You took a deep breath in, your mind blank and full of thoughts at the same time.
***
You stood next to your father, hands clasped in front of you. Surreptitiously, you raised your hand to your forehead, wiping away a few drops of perspiration. It was happening, you were finally going to see Minho again. And if your father successfully manages to make amends with his- fuck, you were grinning just thinking about it.
The villagers standing behind you were all dressed in their best as well, and the lanterns shone brightly, washing over everything. The air was sparkling, the atmosphere charged with electricity. Everyone had their eyes trained on the sky, waiting for Minho’s people. The two other villages were to come tomorrow, according to the letters.
Four villages. All competing in the championship yours was hosting. It was nerve-wracking, the amount of people who would be crammed into your village, which was big enough, really- possibly the largest in the country- it still stressed you out, though. Since there weren’t enough guest houses to fit everyone, a lot of the visitors would be staying with your villagers, the chiefs and their families staying at your house. You were keenly aware of the fact that this meant Minho would be in the same living quarters as you. Your heart pounded at the prospect.
Later in the night, you were planning to sneak into his room, since you obviously wouldn’t be allowed to talk to him during the dinner. At least, you wouldn’t be able to communicate the things you so desperately wanted to say to him. Every part of you tingled as you thought about what you’d say to him.
You felt light as a feather as you stared at the starry sky, eyes widening slightly as you spotted the thousands of dots in the distance, flying closer. Anticipation and exhilaration mingled in you as you waited for them to arrive. Just the thought of feeling Minho pressed up against you again, whispering in your ear how much he loved you...it made you want to cry, almost. You’d waited for this moment for too long.
The conch shell was blown as they reached the edge of the forest. More than a thousand dragons, covered in finery, just like their riders.
Hmm. There were a lot more than you expected. You’d only been anticipating about a hundred, since it was only Minho’s village that was coming tonight. Or so you’d thought...
You turned your head to look at your father, letting the confusion show on your face. Noticing your expression, he shrugged. “It looks like all three decided to come tonight.”
You frowned, looking back at the dragons that were at the border now, preparing for landing. That was weird.
You observed the dragons that had landed, your eyebrows furrowing. Huh.
The three dragons at the front were a lot bulkier than the ones in the back. Darker colors, almost hulking muscles and narrow eyes. They looked like no dragon you’d ever seen before. The sight was almost unsettling. You felt a faint sense of dread spreading over you, a feeling you tried to push away as your eyes searched each dragon’s back for Minho.
You recognized Minho’s father right away. He was at the very front, along with two other old men on a green and blue dragon respectively, that you realized were the chiefs of the other two villages. Surprisingly though, Minho wasn’t sat behind him. You’d assumed it to be that way...after all, Minho’s dragon was still here. So where was he? Your eyebrows furrowed, not wanting to assume the worst right away. You wildly looked over them all, craning your neck slightly. You didn’t want to seem too eager, but it’s not like you could help yourself. Could anyone blame you? Here you were, about to meet the first and only person you’d ever fallen in love with, after years of yearning and loneliness.
As your father stepped forward, a smile on his face to greet the chiefs, you finally saw him.
For a minute, it was like you couldn’t breathe. He looked as beautiful as ever, his feline eyes twinkling, his dark hair exposing part of his smooth forehead. His hands gripped the reins so tightly his knuckles were white, and the way he sat on his dragon was regal, his expression confident and filled with determination. He was older, and somehow even more handsome than the last time you saw him. You didn’t even think that was possible.
You swallowed, your breath catching in your throat as his eyes finally met yours.
It was like time had ceased for a minute. You smiled slowly, happy tears pricking at your eyes as you took in his face.
He didn’t smile back.
And that’s when you noticed the pale arms wrapped around his waist. Confused, you watched as the chiefs dismounted the dragons, along with their heirs. Minho alighted from the dragon, helping down the woman who had been holding onto him. He held her hands gently, leaning in to press a kiss to her forehead.
You felt like your whole world had collapsed, bile rising in your throat as you watched her giggle. You noticed she was dressed in blue, her clothing that of a heiress. As they approached, your eyes fell on the sparkling ring on her finger...one that matched Minho’s.
When his eyes looked into yours again, they were cold, just like your heart.

Fate and Phantasms #178
Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re building the beach’s demon king of the sixth heaven, Oda Nobunaga (Berserker)! This extra spicy Nobu is a Swords Bard to make her axe a little more literal while still grabbing the freaking spaceship we need to build, a Four Elements Monk to grab that giant flaming skeleton, and just a bit of Fighter for high-speed guitar skills that would make Hellshake Yano weep with jealousy.
Check out her build breakdown here, or her character sheet over here!
Next up: Team Tyrannical Shooting Star... again.
Race and Background
Nobu is still a Variant Human, giving her +1 Wisdom and Charisma. The Deception proficiency she gets is also super useful for your fool’s tactics, as is the Mobile feat, which gives you an extra 10′ of movement each move action, and you can escape from enemies you’ve attacked this turn without dealing with their attacks of opportunity.
She gets the Entertainer background this time though so she can rock out on the beach with proficiency in Acrobatics and Performance.
Ability Scores
Nobu’s Charisma is top notch, which isn’t surprising. She really knows how to make an entrance. After that is Dexterity, because playing a guitar is hard, but playing one with a chainsaw attached is even harder. The fact you still have both hands is tribute to your skills. Your Dexterity is next, your primary fuel for that fire is... you. A lesser servant would already be charcoal by now. Your Wisdom isn’t terrible, though that’s mostly for multiclassing. Your Strength’s a bit low, but your weapon’s damage comes from being a chainsaw more than you swinging it. Finally, dump Intelligence. You’re still Nobu, and you’re also a berserker this time around.
Class Levels
1. Fighter 1: We’re starting off as a fighter mostly for the weapon proficiencies, but the extra HP and concentration buff doesn’t hurt either. You get proficiency with Strength and Constitution saves, as well as two skills- Insight will help make you a lot smarter than you look, and Intimidation is just really easy when you have a giant flaming skeleton backup singer.
You also get a Fighting Style, so grab Superior Technique to throw out a Distracting Strike once per short rest. When you hit a target with a distracting strike, you’ll deal more damage, and the next non-you creature to target it gets advantage.
You also get a Second Wind you can use as a bonus action once per short rest for a bit of healing. This isn’t even the last healing thing you get- I don’t know why you’ve got Garden of Avalon attached to a skill, and honestly I don’t care. It’s awesome.
2. Monk 1: One thing fighter doesn’t have going for it is the ability to duke it out in a T-shirt. Monk fixes that handily with Unarmored Defense, giving you an AC based on your Dexterity and Wisdom. It’s... not a huge boost, but it’s something?
Even better, you get Martial Arts, so now you can use your dexterity instead of strength to attack with your monk weapons. A guitar/cd player/chainsaw isn’t a monk weapon yet, but at least your punches will land.
3. Monk 2: At second level, monks can use their Ki for all sorts of things on their bonus action- dash, disengage, dodge, or attack twice as a bonus action, by spending ki points! You get Monk Level ki points per short rest. You also get Unarmored Movement, making you even faster while not wearing any kind of armor.
Most importantly, you can turn your axe into a Dedicated Weapon over a long rest, turning any non-two handed or heavy weapon into a monk weapon. Battleaxes are versatile, not two-handed, so now you’ve got an axe-sized axe that you can really use. And it only took three levels!
4. Fighter 2: We’re popping back to fighter one last time for Action Surge, giving you a second action on a turn once per short rest. I don’t know what qualifies as a “sick guitar solo” in D&D, but I hope playing twice within the same six seconds counts.
5. Bard 1: Now that you’ve got your speed up, your music should be a bit more magical. First level bards can use Bardic Inspiration as a bonus action, giving your allies a d6 to use on an attack, check, or save. You get Charisma Modifier inspiration dice to hand out per long rest. You also learn a couple Spells that will put your high Charisma to use.
Grab Vicious Mockery and Bane to throw people off their game, and Prestidigitation so you can do whatever you want to with minor magical effects. You also get Heroism and Cure Wounds for more party support, Faerie Fire for just a touch of flame right off the bat.
You also get one more skill proficiency, so grab History. You’re not an academic, but you are a historical figure.
6. Bard 2: Second level bards are Jacks of All Trades, adding half their proficiency to checks you’re not proficient with. You also get a Song of Rest, adding a d6 to healing done over short rests. We’re still a ways away from your giant flaming skeleton, but for now you can use Silent Image so it looks like you have one.
7. Bard 3: We debated a lot between making you a Swords bard or a Valor bard, but in the end the former won out so you can make your weapon your casting implement. Thanks to your new Dueling fighting style, you can play the axe one-handed just as well as you do with two hands, and you also get Blade Flourishes using your Inspiration. When you take the attack action, your movement increases by 10′, and you can spend an inspiration die to deal extra damage and get another effect. A Defensive Flourish adds the roll to your AC for a round, a Slashing Flourish deals the extra damage to nearby creatures as well, and the Mobile Flourish pushes the creature away, and you can use your reaction to follow them.
You get Expertise in Performance and Deception, doubling your proficiency bonus in those checks. You also learn the second level spell Heat Metal. Real fire? In a fire-themed character build? Wild!
8. Bard 4: Use your first Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Dexterity for higher AC and better attacks. You can also use Minor Illusion for those times you want a fire skeleton, but you can’t waste a spell slot. If you want another second level spell, use Pyrotechnics to make, well, pyrotechnics. You can put out a small area of existing fire, and/or you can create Fireworks or Smoke from that area. The former forces a constitution save (DC 8 + Proficiency + charisma mod) on nearby creatures or they’re blinded for a round, and the latter creates a smoke cloud that creates a heavily obscured area for up to a minute.
9. Monk 3: Now that we’ve got a good lineup of music set to go, let’s finally get the skeleton. As a Four Elements monk, you’re a Disciple of the Elements, giving you two Elemental Disciplines. Elemental Attunement is mandatory, and it gives you several small effects, including the ability to create small fires as an action. More importantly, you can spend a ki point to turn your arms into Fangs of the Fire Snake, making your unarmed attacks deal fire damage for the turn, and your reach increases by 10′ for the turn. On top of that, you can spend even more ki points to deal more damage with each hit. They don’t specify the attacks are coming from a giant skeleton, but I’m pretty sure that’s an oversight.
You can also use your reaction to Deflect Missiles and reduce incoming damage from arrows. If you reduce it to zero, you can throw it back. Yeah, it’s okay. I’m still thinking about the fire skeleton though.
10. Monk 4: The ASIs are coming hard and heavy right now, so bump up your Dexterity for better armor and attacks. You also get to Slow Fall as a reaction, so jumping out a building isn’t quite as stupid an idea for you.
11. Monk 5: Fifth level monks get an Extra Attack for more punches each action. That means you’ve got two in a normal turn, three with martial arts, four with flurry of blows, and six with an Action surge. You also get to turn those punches into Stunning Strikes, forcing a constitution save on the target to avoid getting stunned for a round. That save’s based on your wisdom though, so don’t expect miracles.
12. Bard 5: Bouncing back to bard real quick makes your Bardic Inspiration stronger, turning all those dice into d8s. That buffs your flourish power, and your party support. As a bonus, you become a Font of Inspiration, so those dice recharge on short rests too!
Really this is just a banner level for you, since with third level spells you can also grab Major Image to create a really big skeleton that actually feels hot!
13. Bard 6: Sixth level bards get pretty much nothing, ‘cause your extra attack doesn’t stack. You also get a Countercharm, I guess. Spend your action to give advantage to allies dealing with Fear and Charm effects.
If you want to do that and still be useful, spend a minute to give your allies a Motivational Speech -er, concert- to give them temporary HP and advantage on wisdom saves. If they’re hit by an attack, they also get advantage on their next attack too. The spell ends for everyone after an hour, or for a creature after their temporary HP is destroyed.
14. Bard 7: Seventh level bards get fourth level spells, like Hallucinatory Terrain. I know nobuserker won’t get the ability to set fields on fire for a while, but futureproofing is a good habit to get into.
15. Monk 6: Hopping back over to monk real quick for some Ki-Empowered Strikes, making your fists magical for overcoming resistance. You also get one more Elemental Discipline, and Sweeping Cinder Strike gives you Burning Hands for the low low cost of 2 ki points per cast. You can also spend an extra ki point to upcharge it, but honestly that’s more trouble than it’s worth.
16. Bard 8: Another ASI! Use this one to power up your Charisma for stronger heals, stronger spells, and more inspiration. You can also cast Phantasmal Killer so Skelly can go kill people on his own.
17. Bard 9: Your Song of Rest grows to a d8 as well, for sicker riffs while you’re jamming. You can also Animate Objects, so now you can really put the “chain” back in your chainsaw and go scooting around.
18. Bard 10: Your Bardic Inspiration grows one last time to a d10, and you get Magical Secrets, two spells from any class. (You also get a cantrip, so.. True Strike, why not.)
You also learn the spell Find Greater Steed so you can ride in style in your own customizable rocket. I’d recommend a Griffon, but anything with a flying speed is good. You also get Haste to make that griffon more rocket-y, doubling a target creature’s speed, giving it an extra action, advantage on dex saves and checks, and it’s AC goes up by 2. You’ll have to let the engines cool afterwards though, it’ll have to take a turn off once the spell ends. Also, make sure you keep that thing low to the ground, unless you want to get pancaked by Ishtar.
Also, more Expertise. Perfect your atsumori with Acrobatics and your cool poses with Intimidation.
19. Monk 7: It took a while to get here, but you finally get Evasion! Now your dexterity saves are super good, with failures only dealing half damage and successes avoiding all damage! You also get a Stillness of Mind that lets you end charming and frightening effects on yourself. Madness enhancement is one hell of a drug.
20. Monk 8: Your capstone level is one last ASI, and if you made it this far you deserve a pat on the back. And also the Tough feat for 40 extra HP.
Pros:
With support from your fighting techniques and bard spells plus damage from your monk stuff, you’ve got a lot of variety, so you can fill out any niche your party doesn’t have covered.
Being a mobile monk means you’re fast as hell and hard to retaliate against, making you perfect at hit and run tactics. Use that action surge for a burst of activity, then run off before anyone knows what happened.
Despite being a berserker you have a lot of support options and can fit a lot of roles, from preventing status effects with countercharm & motivational speech to healing with cure wounds to weakening enemies with vicious mockery, bane, and distracting strikes.
Cons:
A less generous person might say this build is too Cluttered. You’ve got inspiration and martial arts fighting for your bonus action, and while you can do many things, there are more dedicated builds that do them better.
This is in part due to limited resources for your best abilities, mostly tied to short rests. With limited action surges, distracting strikes, flourishes, and fire snake fangs, you’ve got a short fuse, and it’ll take work to make sure you don’t burn out before the fighting’s over.
Your ability scores are similarly spread out in all directions, with your wisdom being the big loser. This means that if you can’t outrun someone you’ll be an easy target with an AC of only 15, and your monk abilities like Sweeping Cinder Strike and Stunning Strike aren’t nearly as useful as they should be.

End Me
Eren x Reader
A Prequel of Sorts. Eren never fought for control preferring the security of your hold on him but you could never fully domesticate a wild animal it seemed.
Part 1 Part 3
CW: Manipulation, Toxic Relationship, Attempted Murder, Unhealthy coping mechanisms all in all mildly unsettling themes.
Eren knew how to be good—painfully so. He also knew how to be bad—concerningly so. He was a creature of habit. He did whatever he decided was best for him at the moment and maybe thats what lead you to your current stare down.
“Eren I said move.”
“Fuck what you said.”
Frowning you tried to think what honestly could have brought this mood upon him. It couldn’t have been because you were going out he always understood your random need to socialize. You also can’t remember purposefully setting him off, not in the mood and you weren’t completely cruel to ignore his random—even for him mood change—more in tune to your partners mood swings and emotions than you were to you own.
Carefully reaching out for him you raise an eyebrow when he moves away from your—for now—gentle touch “Are you really upset or just being a brat?”
“Stop talking to me.”
Huffing you choose to ignore his attitude and slip your coat over your shoulders just in time for a knock to be heard from the front door. With Eren on your heels you open the door for your friend.
“Y/N I called but you didn’t answer so I just came up.”
You get a flashback of Eren throwing a tantrum not even 30 minutes ago and launching your device from you 6th floor apartment “Yeah I dropped my phone off the balcony but lets go—Eren be good.”
His glare turns even more deadly when Reiner politely wraps an arm around your shoulders. Closing the door behind you Reiner laughs into the quiet hall “Be good? What is he your dog?”
“Something like that.”
Reiner was a friend an attractive one at that and Eren didn’t like it at all. He hated anyone that was even remotely close to you because you already didn’t like anyone but with Reiner it was different. You let him touch you and hold you.
Eren hated it, he hated it so much—and to make matters worse you didn’t care about his feelings—not one bit.
After a night of bar hopping and watching Bertholdt make a fool of himself in front of Annie, Reiner once again brought you home.
“It was nice seeing you, without your guard dog.” The face he made at the thought of Eren wasn’t a nice one.
“Aw sweetheart don’t be mean.” Reaching up you hold his warm cheek in your slightly chilled hand.
You knew jealousy when you saw it, could detect the slightest change of emotion when it was presented to you. He leans into your hold like a cat seeking out affection—much different than Eren’s wild way of seeking you out.
“Don’t be jealous my dear use your words.”
Reiners face was slowly moving closer to yours and you smirk in amusement. It would seem you had a knack for catching the attention for boys who were looking to be controlled.
“Y/N....”
Your door swings open before Reiner can kiss you and Eren is looking beyond livid. Reiner freezes his fight or flight telling him to run but you keep him steady with your palm.
“Were you waiting for me?”
Eren’s nod is slow and deliberate his eyes still glaring at the nonexistent space between you and the blond.
“Then that ends our time together, goodnight Reiner.” He shivers in what you think is glee from the acknowledgment of the time you spent with him.
“Goodnight.” He doesn’t acknowledge Eren any longer and hurries out to the elevator.
Turning back to the aforementioned boy you make a motion with your wrist “Move.”
When he eventually does get out of your way your hyper aware of the way he sticks to you almost like glue. Throwing your coat over the back of your couch you stretch and lead him to the kitchen.
“You hungry? All I’ve done is drink tonight I could really eat—“
He swings you into the wall by the neck. The alcohol in your system made it incredibly difficult to feel the pain you knew was blossoming up your back so all you could do was stare at the man before you.
You saw the endless sea of madness that unlike you he didn’t bother to cover up. Everyone found the look endearing on him like he never left that childishness behind but you knew the truth.
You could slowly feel yourself starting to suffocate. You didn’t bother panicking because as it had it Eren had all the power right now. If he or you moved the wrong way your neck was as good as snapped.
“Why did you let him touch you?”
Putting a calm hand on his wrist you try and fail to alleviate some of the pressure being forced down on your windpipe “Why. Does. It. Matter.”
Eren was breathing unevenly stuck between fighting his impulses and actually causing some damage “You’re mine you’re—you’re not supposed to—“
“Says. Who?” That makes him let go.
As it would have it you and Eren weren’t dating in any shape or form but he belonged to you. You brought him pleasure that he couldn’t find anywhere else. He was entirely devout to you and you only, all on his own fruition. From the moment he’d accidentally bumped into you and saw through the mask you wore. From the moment he stalked you from the moment he’d shown himself to you begging for salvation.
He wanted to play the game—wanted to be entertained in the morbid way regular people would get sick to their stomachs at—and you let him. You found him amusing enough to keep around but you refused to belong to anyone but yourself.
He was losing the game and fast. As his god you couldn’t be bothered with feeling bad for him.
“Now we can eat or you can sit here and starve whats it gonna be?”
Eren looked terribly unwell like he was about to fold in on himself “u-um eat please.”
You’d never seen him look so unsure before and it made you excited. How would he cry for you next? Would he try to fight more, yell and scream? Or would it be silent and broken?
Flicking your wrist you busy yourself in the kitchen “Good choice, go sit.”
He does as he’s told mumbling words to himself along the way. Was it cruel? Maybe. But you couldn’t be bothered considering how much of a thorn in your side he’d been all day.
You wanted to break him more and till he was nothing but crushed up stars slipping away in the wind. You almost felt bad for how much you were going to ruin him.
But he was your property after all to do with what you wanted. No one could stop you even if they tried. Especially because he let you and thats what made keeping him around so worth it.
You didn’t have the capability of feeling anything close to love no matter how fond of the boy you actually were. So you settled with ownership—they were damn near synonymous anyways.
So you proceeded as normal—well as normal as you are. You order the food you feed him and you move on to wash the dishes. He’d eventually get out of his feelings because he didn’t have the mental capacity to dwell on certain emotions for too long. It was all but routine now.
“Eren bring me whatever dishes you left lying around.”
“...ok.”
Filling the sink with a mixture of water soap and a drop of bleach you wait patiently for the boy to bring what you requested. Turning off the tap You almost get impatient when it seemed like he was taking forever.
“Eren—“ you’re grabbed by the back of the head and shoved face first into the sudsy water.
You try with all your strength to get your head out of the sink but Eren just doesn’t stop. He’d never...hurt you before? Never acted out in this manner it startled you maybe.
And you were slowly but surely drowning.
When he finally does let you up you drop to the floor taking in large gulps of air. Your eyes stung from the mix of bleach and soapy water and you were suddenly freezing.
“Dont,” you look up to eren to see he once again wore that livid expression.
“Dont you ever think about leaving me do you understand?” His breathing was already heavy but now it was slowly turning into hyperventilation. “I’ll kill you I’ll fucking kill you if you ever l-leave me.”
You watched him begin to sob, dropping on his knees he crowded closer to you looking every bit of the victim he made himself.
“Im sorry I’m good I’ll be good I swear!” He tries to touch you but you smack his hands away making him sob harder.
You knew Eren you knew him. His inclination of violence had never been towards you and yet?
“Hit me hit me hit me im sorry please im good I promise.”
Those were the only words that made sense to you in the moment. You were a violent creature by nature one who prioritized your own life before anyone else’s, you’ve never done anything you didnt doubt you’d be able to get out of and yet? Eren had surprised you and not in a good way.
Your eyes come back into focus and you see the pitiful look he wore as if he hadn’t just almost killed you “Hit me please?”
And so you do.
You punch him right in the face with all your strength causing him to fly back against the tiles and you don’t stop there. You let out all the frustration from your near death experience out onto his body completely aware of the blissed out smile he now sported.
Regardless your mind was going 1 million miles per hour as one thing became clear. Eren was slipping out of your control and fast. One day you feared he’d be the one in control and that wasn’t a game you wanted to play.
You’re in control.
You were IN control
You not him.
You.
You freeze. Fist inches from his face.
It was like your body was in forced reboot you couldn’t move your thoughts finally spiraled too far and too fast for you to reach.
You weren’t in control?
Starring at the needy expression on his face you came to the horrific realization that maybe you’d been playing in his hands all this time. He’d been able to get anything he ever wanted out of you—he knew it too.
Did you really—no you couldn’t be right?
“I’m good see?”
Wrong—you were in so fucking deep.
Slowing your breathing you lower your once trembling fist “Get. Out.”
“Huh?”
Climbing off his chest you wipe the remaining water off your face “Get the fuck out I dont wanna see you.”
Eren hadn’t expected this outcome considering how hurt he looked “B-but where am I supposed to go?”
It was a stupid question you both knew he had his own dorm to himself but he’d been so used to sleeping with you every night that he couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.
Rolling your eyes you til your head “I dont care.”
“I cant sleep without you.”
“Cry about it.”
Hauling his shocked form up and out of your home you slam the door shut and immediately turn all three locks ignoring his soft cries from the other side.
Pulling at your wet shirt you could feel the breakdown coming. How did he do it? How’d he make your carefully crafted control snap?
Going into your room you lock that door as well before snatching the throw blanket from the end of your bed and a pillow. Going into your walk-in closet you close the door behind you and navigate in the dark to the farthest corner and sit.
You sit and sit and sit and sit and sit...and then you scream.
You scream until your lungs are raw and your voice is gone and you’re not sure when exactly you started scratching at your face but the stinging thats left behind is brutal.
You needed to think.
You needed a plan.
You needed—fuck you didnt know.
But you did know Eren was about to become a much bigger problem.

Chess. Chapter 13
Y/N never hurt anyone who didn’t deserve it. She only took what she needed, or what she felt others needed. She’d stayed out of sight for a long time, avoiding anything that could get her in to too much trouble. But for some reason Rick Flag shows up in her life, and in an instant, everything changes.
TW: Language, sexual themes, violence, torture. Rated M
(This story is obviously non-canon, i.e. Diablo and GQ, but I hope you’ll enjoy it either way. Let me know if you want to be added to the tag list.)
————————–
Let me start this off with a disclaimer: This chapter does not have Rick appearing. He will be back, but due to length and flow I needed to cut off the chapter where I did. Sorry. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it anyway
————————–
I was lounging on a love seat in the large house the Joker had taken us to; pretending to read a magazine Harley had offered me.
Frost had shown up at the house about 30 minutes after us, with a bump on his head, and a sneer plastered across his face. He insisted that the squad were gone by the time he came too.
The house was just as ghastly as the car had been; with bear skin rugs and clashing patterns on all the furniture. There was no doubt that 99% of it was stolen.
Playing a weird game of tag, Harley and the Joker were chasing each other throughout the house; squealing and growling at each other, each time one of them managed to catch the opponent.
I was thinking something fiercely.
I’d followed Harley and her psycho boyfriend into the Palisades, without any idea of what my next move should be.
Throwing herself into the seat next to me, Harley was laughing; out of breath.
“J is getting me a new puppy”, she giggled. “Those stupid animal rights activists took back my last one, when I was sent back to Louisiana”.
“What’s the plan here, Harley”, I asked.
“I dunno. It’s your turn to think of something”, she answered trustingly.
I sighed.
“I need to make sure Kelper doesn’t make it to congress”, I said.
“Revenge?”, she asked.
“No”, I answered. “There are enough shitheads in office as it is – look at the main guy in charge! We don’t need another one”. I crossed my arms. “Also a little bit of revenge, yeah”, I admitted.
“Yeah that judge does seem like a dick”, Harley muttered.
“No”, I said. “This is about Waller. She has enough power as it is. She doesn’t need to be able to keep hunting people like us down, and force us to do things we don’t want to. Even if we are bad guys”.
She grabbed my face between her hands.
“I’m with you”, she said, and kissed my forehead with a loud smack. “Tell me what to do!”.
I beamed at her. She was a good friend. Even if she was bat shit crazy.
“I need to be able to prove the connection between mr. J and Kelper”, I said; and looked down at my feet. “That does mean, that J won’t be able to use him for protection from the cops anymore”.
Harley was biting her lip.
“Huh”, she said. “He ain’t gonna like that”.
“I know”, I replied. “But we need him to”.
“Harley!”, the Joker called from somewhere. “Come out, come out wherever you are!”.
Harley sighed, then looked into my eyes, and nodded.
“Marco!”, Joker called from the kitchen.
“Polo!”, Harley answered, still looking at me; then grinned, and sprang from the couch to hide from the clown.
—
“Chess has a live bomb in her bag”, Harley said conversationally during breakfast.
I instantly froze; mouth agape prepared to feel my throat being slit at any moment.
“Oh?”, the Joker said, gazing up from over the newspaper he’d been reading – well, not so much newspaper as comic book. “That’s nice, dear”. He looked back down.
Harley – curlers in her hair, and wearing a pink fluffy bathrobe – continued.
“Yup. It’s a pretty nasty one too”. She returned to her marshmallow cereal.
Joker put down his comic book and looked at her.
“Is there something you’d like to say, toots? Something I need to know?”.
I was shaking in my seat; and I gently put down the golden rimmed porcelain cup of coffee in my hand.
“Uhm, Harley. I don’t think this is the time…”.
“Please, Chess”, Joker said to me, lowering his old-fashioned reading glasses. “In this house everyone can say whatever they want, whenever they want. We mustn’t stifle others expressions”.
I nodded fiercely.
“A-absolutely, yes. Of course. I’m sorry”, I stammered.
He quickly reached across the table, and grabbed my hand, putting it between his own.
“I could tell you meant that”, he grinned.
Letting go of my hand, he turned to face Harley again.
“Now where were we, doll? Chess has a bomb in her bag?”, he said calmly.
Harley swallowed some of her orange juice.
“Yeah. It’s a black box, with a little display on it. Pre-set to 1 minute”.
“That sounds fun”, Joker said cheerfully. “What’s it for?”.
Harley got up from her seat, and went to stand behind her beloved madman; massaging his shoulders and neck, making him close his eyes and groan in pleasure. She slid her hands down his shoulders under the flowered kimono he was wearing.
“You know that mean lady, who’s been putting me in that bad place?”. Joker grunted in response. “Well those friends in high places Jerry was moaning about? That’s her”.
The Joker opened his eyes, and looked over his shoulder at her.
“Kelper’s friends with the witch?”, he asked.
Harley went to sit on his lap, and laced her fingers behind his neck.
“No, not the witch; the bitch. The witch is dead”, she said.
“Right, right”, Joker answered. “So?”.
“Well”, Harley continued, “the bitch gave Chess the bomb to blow you up; so you’d stop asking Kelper for favors”.
The clown looked at me, brows – or lack thereof – furrowing.
“You were going to blow me up?”.
I jumped in my seat.
“Oh, no. Absolutely not. Once I knew who you were…”. Harley interrupted me.
“Puddin’, Chess would never do anything like that. We were coming to tell you about the bomb; but then that stupid judge was there, and Chess got all upset, because she really hates his guts”. She kissed his forehead. “We plain old forgot!”.
Joker groaned.
“I spent a lot of money on Kelper. We had a lot of parties”.
“A lot of parties”, Harley nodded, backing him up. “So, maybe… we should do something about it”.
“Oh, snuggle-tits. I need the judge for my business”, Joker said, and looked adoringly at her.
My heartbeat was calming down, and I could think more clearly. I took a small sip of my coffee.
“Mr. J”, I began. “You probably know that I used to work for the Hatter”.
The Joker guffawed and snarled all at once.
“That idiot”.
“Yeah, well”, I continued, “I could work for you, like I did for him. Getting you information, money…”.
“I have money”, he interrupted.
“A new Lamborghini?”, I tried.
His eyes lit up.
“I’m listening”.
I sat up straight. Here we go.
“Kelper is pulling out of your arrangement. He’s even gone so far as getting someone to try to kill you”.
“Well that happens at least once a week”, he said, and shook his head. Harley stroked her fingers through his green hair.
“There’s that girl”, she said, and looked at me.
“What girl?”, Joker asked.
“Well”, Harley continued, “Kelper did some pretty nasty things to a girl who used to work at that place… what was it called?”.
“Sammy’s”, I answered. “It’s a burlesque club in the Narrows”.
I casually took another sip of my coffee, that at this point had gone cold. My face contorted from the taste.
Joker looked at me with narrowed eyes.
I continued.
“About a year and a half ago, Kelper raped and beat an 18 year old girl that worked there”, I said. “She’s still suffering from the attack”.
He patted Harleys thigh to get her to get of his lap.
“Jonny!”, he called, getting to his feet himself.
Frost came into the dining room.
“Yeah, boss?”.
“We own the Narrows, don’t we?”, he asked, and walked slowly towards his minion.
“Yeah, for about 2 years now”, Frost answered, not meeting his eyes.
“And do you know about a bar named Sally’s?”.
“Sammy’s, yeah it’s a stripjoint”, Frost said.
“Burlesque club”, Harley whispered into Jokers ear.
“Burlesque club, Jonny”, Joker said, and grabbed the back of Frosts head. “There is a big difference”. Patting Frosts cheek, he went to sit down again.
“So Sammy’s have been paying their dues, have they not?”.
“Never missed a pay-date”, Frost retorted.
Joker – now sitting down – slammed both his fists into the table, making us all jump.
“Then would you mind telling me, why one of the young ladies working there, was attacked and raped; while she was supposed to be under our protection?”, he yelled; his slicked back hair now disheveled, and falling into his face.
“This doesn’t look good, Jonny! This makes me look bad!”, he shouted.
“I know, boss”, Frost tried. “But it was Kelper, and you told us to stay clear of him”.
Joker jumped out of his chair, and threw it at Frost; only narrowly missing the man.
“Get out. Find Kelper. Bring him to me!”, he growled. “And get Chess new hot cup of coffee. That cold stuff is a disgrace”.
Frost rushed a fresh cup of coffee to me, and ran out the door; already on his phone, yelling at someone.
The Joker found a new chair, and pulled it up to his place at the table. He smoothed his hair back down, and exhaled.
Harley went to stand behind him, and put a hand on his shoulder.
He grabbed my hand like he had before, and looked at me seriously.
“Now”, he said. “Chess. Chessie. My dear. Thank you for making me aware of this problem in my organization. Am I also to understand that you were the one to punish Jer-Jer after his misdeed with the young woman?”.
I smiled brightly, doing my best to seem cheerful.
“That was me, alright!”.
Joker grined.
“Well, when you think about it, you did our job for us!”, he smiled widely. “So I owe you. You came in to this house a stranger; but now – you’re family”.
Harley squealed, and jumped up and down, clapping her hands.
Great. I wasn’t only the clowns newest pet and employee; I was apparently family.
Shit.
“I still want that Lamborghini”, Joker finished, and went to get dressed.
—
We drove to a building not far from the one we had been at the night before.
“Puddin’ you know this means you can’t work with Kelper no more, right?”, Harley said, as we were getting out of the car.
“Yes, yes, squishy-butt, I know”, he answered. “This is going to be fun!”, he snickered, and put his arm around her waist.
I followed them into the building, and down into a basement. In the middle of the dark room sat Kelper, handcuffed to a chair. A single lightbulb was lit above him.
Masked henchmen were spread around the room, covering the exits.
“Jerry!”, Joker said, arms spread into the air as we entered. “Thank you so much for being able to reschedule our meeting. I’m so, so happy you agreed to this location”.
The judge was gagged, had a black eye, and there was already a wet stain under the chair from where he had urinated his pants.
Harley jumped onto a table near the scene, and crossing her legs; she began to file her nails.
I stayed in the shadows; out of Kelpers line of sight.
The clown went to stand in front of his victim, putting a hand on each of his knees, coming down to eyelevel with him. He wrinkled his nose.
“Jer-Jer. Were you that excited to see me?”, he asked. He removed Kelpers mouth gag.
“P-please; Mr. Joker. I don’t know what this is about!”, he stammered.
“This, my friend”, Joker said, “is about your plans for your political future!”.
Frost appeared from the shadows with a chair, that Joker pulled up in front of Kelper. He sat down.
“It’s recently come to my attention that you’ve decided to run for congress”.
“Yes, mr. Joker. I was the one that told you about it myself”, Kelper said.
Joker smacked him across the face, and then pointed a finger at him.
“It’s rude to interrupt!”, he roared.
“Yes, of course. I’m sorry”, Kelper said.
Joker smiled.
“I take a great interest in politics, as you know. I’m even the governor of my own little corner of Gotham. And I find it’s very important to make sure that the people I govern feel safe”.
Kelper nodded.
“Good! So you know where I’m coming from”, the clown continued. “Then I come to hear that someone decided to cause problems in my little paradise. Apparently, a very silly man decided to pay a visit to a burlesque club, and play a little too roughly with one of the lovely dancers there”.
I saw Kelpers eyes widen in fear.
“I didn’t know that would be an issue for you, I swear!”.
The Joker patted his cheek gently.
“Well it is”, he half whispered.
Jumping from the chair, he ran to sit down next to Harley.
“Hi, sugar lips”, he said; and put his arm around her, before calling out.
“Chess!”.
I stepped out of the shadows, and pulled down my hood. Kelper looked at me, recognizing me from the meeting the day before.
“Miss, I don’t know what he’s paying you, but I’ll match and double it!”, he tried desperately.
I sat down in front of him.
“You smell like piss”, I said. He gulped. I sighed. “So this is not going to be fun for you. At all”.
His facial expression changed.
“Do your best, bitch. I’ve been through worse!”.
“Oh?”, I asked. The judge was about to spit in my face, but didn’t have the chance to do so, before I headbutted him.
I rubbed my forehead. That hurt, I thought, but cheered up, when I saw that I had obviously broken his nose.
Joker and Harley roared with laughter from the table.
“So, you’ve had it worse, huh?”, I asked.
He ground his teeth, and nodded.
I smiled and slowly began disappearing into a mist.
Kelpers facial expression immediately changed from prideful to pure fear. He began jumping in the chair, screaming; and managed to fall over; landing in his own wet pool.
“Ew”, Harley said from next to a gleeful Joker.
“Sshh, Harls’. I’m watching this”, he said.
Frost pulled Kelper back into a seated position.
“Get the camera”, I said to him, reappearing in my seat.
I clenched my fist, letting my claws come out.
“I heard you’re going to have some reconstructive surgery, your honor”, I said, looking down at my claws. “Jonny here could find me a pair of rocks, and I could do the deed for you. It’s only polite, seeing as I’m the one to blame for your whole ordeal in the first place…”.
Kelper began crying.
“No, no. Please. I’ll do whatever you want. I will!”, he sobbed.
Frost came in to the light, two plum-sized rocks in one hand, and a smartphone in the other. I took the items into my hands.
“Ok. Now, you can chose one of these gifts; and I won’t take no for an answer!”, I beamed. “Either you chose to let me help you make a nice little video, where you tell the world about your rape and beating of that young woman 18 months ago – along with an account of your dealings with criminal organizations in Gotham. That will make your family really proud of you, and you’ll instantly feel better about your misdeeds. Or…”.
I showed him the two rocks.
“… you let me help you by filling that empty sack of yours”.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Joker and Harley both leaning in to hear his answer.
Kelper sobbed, and a bloody glob of snot ran out of his broken nose.
“The video. I’ll do the video”.
“Boring”, Joker snarled quietly, and Harley patted his leg soothingly.
I pulled out the phone.
“Don’t worry Jerry. This will be over in no time”. I started filming. “Action”.
Kelper opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.
“Look into the camera. Say your name”, I whispered.
He looked into the lens, and began.
“My name is Jeremiah Kelper. I am a judge in Gotham city”. He paused, and I kicked his shin.
“And”, he yelped, “18 months ago, I raped and beat a young woman I was giving a ride home in my limousine”. He sobbed. “I then… let two of my friends rape her, while I watched”.
I was struggling not to run my claws through his heart.
“Continue”, I hissed. Kelper did as asked.
“I have also been receiving payoffs from the crime lord known as the Joker”.
“That’s me!”, the Joker said, and jumped into frame; giving Kelper a wet kiss on the cheek. “We’ve been the best of friends, for a long, long time”, he said, and patted Kelpers shoulder.
“Isn’t this enough?”, Kelper cried.
“Apologise!”, I growled.
“Yes!”, Joker exclaimed. “And tell them that you’ve been a bad, bad boy. Say; I’m Jerry, and I’m a bad, bad boy!”.
Kelper sobbed again.
“I’m so sorry. I’ve abused my office, and I’ve hurt a young woman who didn’t deserve it”.
“No one deserves what you did to her!”, I snarled.
“No, no one deserves that”, he admitted.
“Bad boy!”, Harley yelled from her table, making Kelper jump in his seat.
“I’m Jerry, and I’m a bad, bad boy”, he finished.
“Cut! Scene! Print!”, Joker called, and gave the judge a hard slap on the back. “Good job, Jer-jer! This is one for the books!”.
I put the phone in the bag with the bomb I was still carrying. It was over.
—
A loud crash was heard. While we had been filming, the room had been almost cleared of Jokers minions, as they’d disappeared into the shadows.
The lights went out, and I felt a gush of wind over my head.
“No!”, Joker shouted.
A hard punch to my shoulder made me fall to the floor, and I dropped the bag, accidentally kicked it; and watched it slide into the darkness somewhere.
Panicking, I scrambled to find it, my shoulder pulsing with pain.
A gunshot was heard, followed by the sound of Harleys shriek, as she was thrown across the floor.
I got on my feet, and ran in the direction of where I thought the bag might be.
Someone grabbed my arm, holding me in place.
“Leave it”, a gravelly voice said. “Keep your head down”.
Shit…

Do you think SEGA and Sonic Team are trying too hard to appeal to bad faith critics who disliked Sonic from the get-go? I’ve been getting increasingly bummed by people trying to rain on my parade when it comes to Sonic, because I love it already and I know its cheesy appeal is part of what I love about it. Even sonic positivity videos will take cheap potshots at Shadow’s game because it’s “too edgy” or “too stupid to believe a hedgehog game has death metal ending music.” Makes me sad.
Oh that is absolutely 100% what they’ve been doing ever since 06 became a laughing stock. It’s why there’s so much self-deprecating humor built into the franchise now, why the supporting characters show up so rarely in the boost formula games, and why the games don’t put nearly as much emphasis on storytelling. Instead of trying to do that stuff better, they just kind of swept it under the rug as an embarrassing series of missteps. People said Sonic had “too many friends” because the games started to feel cramped by their huge casts, so Sega scaled the cast way back. People said the games took themselves too seriously, so now a lot of them are afraid to ever be serious
While I do think that we’ve gotten more good stuff than bad in this new era of Sonic--I really genuinely enjoyed Lost World (even if I didn’t care for the Deadly Six), and the Sonic Boom cartoon is great --it’s still sad to see Sega limit the kind of stories Sonic can tell. Having a bigger focus on comedy is totally fine since these characters lend themselves to comedy really well, but a light, comedic tone doesn’t inherently mean we can’t have some character development. The movie was goofy as hell, but it still gave Sonic feelings and a personal arc
The big exception to all this was Forces, which was an attempt to swing very hard in the opposite direction and embrace the cheesy self-seriousness and the butt rock of the olden days. But I worry that its mixed reception will make Sega afraid to branch out again
Personally, my dream is a future in which Sonic games still have jokes and stuff, but Sonic Team isn’t afraid to bring in a few supporting characters like the Chaotix or Rouge or Blaze or whoever if they think it would tell a more compelling story. And also they keep doing butt rock vocal themes like Fist Bump

3 years of Sonic Forces, the biggest love-hate relationship of the series
[note: this is the translation of @latin-dr-robotnik’s article]
Today is an almost special day, today it’s the anniversary of a rather peculiar game in this series.
On this day 3 years ago, the (to this day) newest game of Sonic Team was released: Sonic Forces. After waiting a year and a half since its announcement (and four years since Sonic Lost World’s release), it was finally time to see what the last chapter of the main series had in store for us, and the results were… okay.
There were so many warning signs in the months before the release: a marketing campaign that was noticeably absent until the very last month, opting to focus more on Mania (let’s not forget that we still get videos about Mania even after the game’s release, not so much about Forces), which added to the uncertainty caused by the footage already available at the time, which ended up being confirmed a few days before the release, when some people managed to get the game early and streamed a good chunk of the game. While one of the leakers was just a bad player, the quality of the game itself was put into question…
A harsh reality
I’m not going to soften up my words here: for being the latest Sonic game, in a post-Generations and post-Boom era, Sonic Forces fell short of everything it tried to do (if it tried). Anything positive comes from the roots of something negative, and in the context of this anniversary, after 3 years without knowing a thing about the next game, it only emphasizes the frustration and the disappointment it caused.
Sonic Forces promised a world devastated by Eggman, an epic battle to save the world and win against a powerful enemy. However, of so many promises, not even the first one, the most basic one, was kept: it was an empty takeover, explained poorly (because they didn’t even show it, they told it through text) and developed even worse. All the potential of such an exciting world was thrown away as soon as the game didn’t even try to explain some of its most important questions (like why Green Hill was in the process of desertification); to this day we still don’t know what the fuck does the Phantom Ruby do, in Mania it has some powers, in Forces it has different powers, and it’s not clear where does it come from or if it’s more powerful than the Chaos Emeralds. It is disappointing to not be able to discover all this untapped potential, and it is so disappointing that one of the oldest works on my blog was an attempt to rewrite the beginning of the game, give it more context and a better footing to start the adventure.
This old leak dates back to 2016, when the game was barely announced, and surprisingly it ended up being real, very very real. Even the title “Sonic Wars” is true, and if you don’t believe me you can open the game’s folder and read the names that appear. Source.
The confusion and disappointment don’t end here. If you have read the mess of opinions and emotions that is my analysis of the game [translator’s note: the link is in Spanish], you may have noticed that one of the biggest questions never answered was, what’s up with the order of the levels and why is it so confusing? Between 2016 and 2017, there were some leaks and statements going around places like Sonic Stadium that confirmed that the game went through numerous changes, not just in the plot, but in the levels as well. Right now I can’t find these old posts (I’m surprised that the fandom didn’t archive them), but it was said that the original idea for Forces, then still called Sonic Wars, was to shine the spotlight even more on the Avatar, or Buddy as it was called; the decision was unanimously rejected by SEGA of America and Europe, forcing SEGA of Japan to order that the game was modified. In fact, I remember that the leak that mentioned this meeting between the SEGA branches was rather bad, with a very tense atmosphere and lots of disagreements.
This is the closest thing to a confirmation of the scrapped plot that I could find. At least it’s proof that I’m not crazy and that Forces was indeed more focused on the Avatar. Source.
The mess that is the order of the levels, the questionable presence of characters like Classic Sonic, and some of the details of one of the leaked scrapped scripts such as that apparently they considered to reintroduce Mephiles – all of this shapes the network of a mediocre game, created under the premise of “from the creators of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations” but taking all the wrong parts of those two games, using an engine that has been proven to be less efficient than Unleashed’s and Generations (and I’m not talking about the Hedgehog Engine, which is the graphical engine – I’m talking about the game and physics engine of Lost World), and with short levels and… polarizing bosses, to say the least.
The result is a game that shows a lot of potential, but in practice it doesn’t live up to it at all, be it for its own limitations (being rushed like hell) or for a noticeable lack of attention to details; it didn’t succeed in creating a cohesive and coherent world, with levels that could be worthy of what has been learned in these years. This is the reality of Sonic Forces.
And yet...
Despite everything I’ve just said, despite all the unacceptable errors that Forces made, and despite all the terribly wasted potential… we still talk about this game.
There are many reasons. On one hand, Forces and Mania have been the latest Sonic games for 3 years now, which is tragic in on itself (Team Sonic Racing disappeared from the face of the Earth); on the other, we still talk about Forces because there is something that still attracts us to it.
It’s not the same attraction we feel for Sonic ‘06, though. Forces is not a complete, almost-franchise-killing disaster like ‘06 was, it’s not a giant meme that spread from the fandom to popular circles and internet figures such as the Game Grumps. People have been trying to fix Forces’ mistakes, but not on the same scale as projects that tries to completely recreate ‘06 with a radically different engine, or fix each and every bug in the original version. Forces is nowhere near as infamous, and so the discussion goes in different directions.
youtube
Episode Shadow is still one of the most entertaining parts of the game, and one of the most important as well, as Shadow himself hadn’t been a playable character since… well, Sonic ‘06.
On one hand, there is a cult surrounding Infinite, one that I personally don’t agree with, and I don’t know if it’s bigger than Mephiles’ 15 years ago, but I do know that it exists and it’s still present. One of the ways Sonic Team tried to “go back to its roots” was to introduce a character like Infinite in a plot that was supposed to be “more serious”. Final results notwithstanding, Infinite managed to win the heart of a sizeable portion of the fandom, which still wishes for his return and development.
On the other hand, there is the Avatar, our personal OC with an impressive customization system, which allows us complete freedom, to the point that we could recreate characters introduced in Sonic IDW like Whisper the Wolf. What at first looked like a questionable idea, nothing more than a source of memes, ended up becoming the smartest idea Forces had, with a gameplay style that, in my opinion, retains a little of the old Adventure spirit, and even had some of the most fun levels in the game. While Classic Sonic ruined one third of the game, and Sonic was somewhat mediocre compared to his past feats, the Avatar’s gameplay style manages to keep its quality throughout the game, despite the fact that the plot keeps revolving around their presence instead of focusing on the other aspects of saving the world, which is... well, a little unfortunate.
Even I, who I’m not really into Sonic OCs, had a lot of fun recreating some of the characters.
And finally we get to the best part of the entire game: the music.
Even after three years my opinions haven’t changed much. Forces’ music isn’t perfect, it has its low moments (I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t like Light of Hope) and some disasters (F*ded H*lls lol), but overall it has good intentions and it has some pretty good highlights.
The use of synths, as overdone and criticized as it is, was an honest attempt to follow a trend present in older games, like Sonic Unleashed, where this instrument symbolized Eggman’s influence. An interesting touch that, while wasn’t completely successful, is appreciated.
youtube
I still say that Fighting Onward is one of the best themes of the entire game, and Spaceport as the level benefits from having it.
Then there’s the best part of the entire soundtrack: the return of vocal themes, such as the main theme, the villain theme, and some of the level themes. I cannot explain with enough words how much fans were waiting for this, and it was brilliantly handled by the advertising campaign: a preview of the instrumental version of Fist Bump, a short peek of the Avatar themes, and finally the reveal of some of the major themes. It’s not surprising that it became one of the most appreciated parts by the fans. From the iconic intro of Fading World to the subtle nod to Green Hill in Set In Motion, every theme has something that makes it stand out from the rest of the game.
But even so, the rest of the music in the game has redeemable points as well. Forces in general distances itself from the music styles previously used in the series, especially from the variety of incredible sounds of Unleashed or even Lost World; but from time to time it still recognizably Sonic, like in the half-Megaman, half-Runners Network Terminal, in the extremely epic and underrated Last Judgement, or in the always-mentioned Ghost Town (not the only “good” Classic theme in my opinion, but the first one that comes to mind). Even the remixed Zavok theme sound better in Forces than in its original version.
A love-hate relationship
At the end of the day, the only thing left I could say is that Forces is still one of the most polarizing games in the series. 3 years aren’t enough to heal some of the wounds left by the 4-year hiatus, plus the disappointment of the time, but at the same time these 3 years kept alive the memory of its best moment, the discussions about the music and the uncountable groups of fans reunited to share OCs like the fandom has always done.
In this anniversary, I thought it would be interesting to revisit a bit the peculiar relationship I have with this game, as we wait for a new hype cycle for the next game. And maybe, just maybe, that will be the moment Forces will fade from our collective memory, at least for a decade, until new fans will look back to the good and bad this game has done. And I hope that, in the future, the situation of the franchise will also be different from what it has been these last years, in a good way of course.
This is all we have left of Forces today, a game that did not manage to capitalize on its opportunities, and a game that shames the legacy of the Unleashed-Colors-Generations era; but also a game that had some genuine, interesting ideas, and a different musical direction, one that (with some exceptions) was what the fans wanted. It’s a polarizing game, it’s a love-hate relationship.
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic forces#translation#happy birthday forces#i've translated this article because it sums up my thoughts pretty well#i don't hate it and there are things i unironically like about it#but overall it was a big disappointment

A very hot take!
I came to a very strange conclusion the other day, but I believe I dislike Sonic Forces more than Sonic 06. Don’t get me wrong, 06 is still a broken, rushed game yet it feels more complete.
Yes, the power meter isn’t properly programmed, the game is glitchy beyond belief, and there are plenty of issues throughout. But the story is told coherently and to completion. Unlike Forces, where the cutscenes were told through text boxes on a black background, dialogue sequences, or mentioned but never shown. In Forces, characters will claim that their troops are being massacred, but you never see it at all. It feels so disconnected. In one instance, you invade a pyramid where Eggman is building weapons. This doesn’t make sense because logically Eggman has the Phantom Ruby so he can just create weapons on the fly AND the cutscene immediately following this scene completely forgets about the weapons and it is never brought up again.
Forces is also just lazy with continuity. You travel through the first stage and Eggman has already caused Green Hill Zone to become a desert with his NEW Death Egg Robots lying about. He hasn’t even taken over the world yet and it’s just stubbornness for the developers to use their assets there. Lazy. The ending is mostly earned in 06 as things built up to it, but Forces just flops around and the ending happens. The stakes don’t feel realized and the end boss is a huge disappointment. At least we had a conclusive Super Transformation battle at the end of 06. 06 actually uses the ensemble cast in a large way while Forces is the terribly boring and aggravating, “If Sonic is lost then the heroes can’t win” type of story. Don’t even get me started on how Forces had Omega coming back from the dead for NO REASON!
Forces also reuses tons of assets from Sonic Generations. Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone were not chosen out of an artistic direction, but rather because they would be easier to implement. At least 06, (while some stage themes were reused), was wholly original and even contained some really interesting ideas.
Then we get to the gameplay, and I, again, do not want it to sound like I am claiming 06 is flawless, however... the stages are more fleshed out and realized. Forces stages rarely run longer than a minute and exclusively feature linear hallways. It’s not fun. This is a shock too, but 06 controls better than Forces. 06 has a floatiness to itself that works well enough, but Forces has some of the worst controls I have ever had in a 3D Sonic game. Stiff, unreliable, and broken.
The soundtrack of 06 is something I can praise with no caveats. It’s amazing and has so much variety. While I do like some songs in Forces, the over-reliance on synth instruments make the soundtrack disappointing. It needs more than just Ohtani Tomoya at the helm.
Both games visually look fine, but there’s just a lot more to see in Sonic 06.
There are things I like in Forces, but I don’t think I have ever been more disappointed in a game. The hype and excitement I felt was completely deflated upon playing through the campaign. I remember back in 2006, I was also disappointed in Sonic 06, but the disappointment wasn’t as huge. I know this is a personal opinion. I can still go back to 06 and have a fun time going through stages and even glitching the game to my benefit. However, Forces gives me none of that joy. I like Fist Bump, Infinite, and parts of the Avatar Creator, but the game is just a huge disappointment. It’s in my list of worst Sonic games ever.
In a way, when I can confidently say that Sonic 06 gave me a better experience than Sonic Forces, you know it was messed up.

When Hoseok's phone vibrated on his night stand at an ungodly hour of the morning, his heavy eyes had widened at the sight of your name lighting up the screen.
He wasn't expecting you to call tonight. You'd texted him nearly eight hours ago -- not that he was counting or anything -- to tell him you were leaving for your date with some guy from one of your classes, even sending him a mirror picture to prove it that made his breath hitch when his eyes glossed over the black dress which hugged your figure just right.
You were always asking if you looked okay. He told you that you looked lovely. Even sent one of the silly little thumbs up emojis, as if to say go get your man like a supportive friend should.
But what he really wanted to say was that you looked perfect in that dress and that you would have no trouble catching Jungkook's eye looking like that. After all you managed to catch Hoseok's eyes in your sweats and one of his over sized jumpers playing games at midnight on his couch.
Except that is the exact opposite of what you're supposed to say to your best friend, so he swallowed the words like he always did.
Anyway, he'd turned in for an early night after that, hoping to get the image of Jungkook's hands stripping you out of that sinful dress out of his mind before it led to even more scandalous images of you without the dress, sat in Jungkook's lap and wishing it were him underneath you. His mind liked to taunt him, saying that it really could have been him if he hadn't left it too long to make a move, falling so deep into the friend zone that he knew there was no way back out.
So receiving a call from you this late at night surprised him to say the least.
Sleepy fingers fumbled to hit the green answer button before you rang off on the other end of the line, the selfie you had forced him to take way back when your hair was long and his hair was blonde that he had set as your contact picture disappearing, quickly replaced by the sounds of your sniffles crackling down the line and suddenly he was upright in bed.
"Can you come pick me up?"
"What happened?"
"Don't wanna talk about it." Another sniffle, Hoseok already throwing a hoodie over his pajamas.
"I'm on my way. Hang tight."
A pang of worry throbbed in his chest as he envisioned you stood shivering somewhere on the side of the road while he hastily shoved his feet into the first pair of shoes he found. Or at least that's what he told himself it was as he started his car, bumping up the heat for when you would slide into the seat next to him.
Because somewhere deep down, he knew the reason he was speeding down city roads at 01:37 as the dashboard clock liked to remind him, was simply because he wanted to be the one to tell you everything was going to be okay. A part of him was even a little glad that things hadn't worked out with Jungkook. And he hated himself for it.
It was like his eyes were alert to you, spotting your hunched figure leaning against a scuffed wall outside some scummy bar before he was even close enough to see the tears streaking your cheeks. You didn't give a little wave like you usually did when he pulled up, no coy smile making his heart do little flips, just that same pang of miserable sympathy in equal measure to his niggling guilt. Instantly he knew that this one was bad.
Still, he leaned across the center console and pushed the door open in a welcoming gesture for you to hop on in like he always did because you said it was gentlemanly and he was a sucker for praise when it came from you.
"Y/N?" He asked simply, expecting a hello or a reassuring smile at the least.
But when you slumped into the passenger seat, bare arms hugging your torso, he was met with nothing but a glum vacant stare.
While you usually seemed to fill the room with your presence, the way your eyes crinkled when you laughed or the way you hummed along to the radio under your breath enough to brighten his mood instantly like a perfect spell. Now you seemed small as you pressed your forehead to the window and watched the blurry orange glow of streetlights pass by with watery eyes.
The funny ache in his chest was back but this time it was an overwhelming longing to reach out and hold you, wipe away the tracks that stained your cheeks. But he feared that if he did you would shatter into a million pieces right in front of him so he tightened his grip on the steering wheel until the veins in his hands strained in the dark and focused his eyes on the road.
Unspoken words were thick in the air. Silence didn't usually bother him, not with you. You spent copious amounts of time in each others quiet company all the time. It was comforting.
Not this, though. Even the hum of the car engine and the click of the indicators seemed deafening. But he knew you well enough to know that pushing you to talk wouldn't make a difference and you'd let him in when you were ready. His job was just to be there when the time came, like a best friend should be.
Hoseok wasn't sure if he was supposed to be dropping you off at your place — honestly the thought of leaving you alone when you were still shaking with muffled sobs made him sick to his stomach — but it didn't feel right to take you back to his apartment either.
So he let the wheels of the car drive a journey every inch of which he had burned to memory, until he was pulling into the far most parking space in a darkened lot, otherwise vacant due to the hour, that overlooked the sea and the little slip of beach beside it.
All concerns were out of the window now. Hoseok didn't care if it was late and he should have been sleeping or that he was going to be tired at work tomorrow. This place was only called upon for special occasions. Or emergencies.
It was your place. Where the two of you came when you received good news or bad news; wanted to laugh or wanted to cry; when it was sunny or when it was raining; when you got your college acceptance letter or the day Hoseok's dog died to name a few.
Hoseok cut the engine, plunging you into complete silence, apart from the tranquil crash of waves which seemed to comfort you somewhat.
If he strained to look over he dashboard he could see the overgrown steps which led down onto the pebbled sand, water beyond it black with the reflection of the cloudy night sky, apart from a slither of moonlight which glistened across its surface.
Hoseok always thought it felt different here at night. Melancholy. You said you liked it better without the bustle of people — it was a popular spot for couples which always made Hoseok burn from the inside out with a yearning to hold your hand like they did — more so now it was just you and him and the rolling waves.
After a few long minutes of watching the tide, you finally permeated the hush with a shaky sigh.
Hoseok wanted to wrap you in his arms there and then like he usually would without hesitation. But something felt different so he refrained. Spoke tentatively instead. "Are you okay?"
You scoffed and he worried he'd said the wrong thing but then again it was the most he'd gotten out of you since you'd left the bar. "I'm pretty shit, actually."
Moonlight highlighted the way you threw your head back against the headrest in self reproach, pressing your knuckles to your eyes but failing to stop the fat tears that slipped out anyway.
Hoseok bit his lip. "Want to talk about it?"
"Turns out the date was just a stupid bet with one of his friends." Your laugh was hollow, shake of your head sorrowful. "We didn't even make it to movies before he was running off with some other girl he met at the bar"
Hoseok's heart shattered. He knew first hand how excited you had been for this stupid date; you'd been blabbing on about it all week. About how much you liked Jungkook. About how much he liked you.
"Fucking bastard." Hoseok gritted, fists clenching as he envisioned all the ways he could fuck up Jungkook's pretty face for making you hurt. "You're better than him, Y/N."
"But I'm not!" A hand slammed on the dashboard, making Hoseok jolt when your voice raised incredulously. "Jungkook was supposed to be the best thing that ever happened to me but he doesn't want me, Hobi. No one ever does."
I want you. The words died on his tongue before they could be spoken, Hoseok sucking in a breath as he mulled over something more appropriate instead.
"Don't be ridiculous," the anger lacing Hoseok's tone made you finally loll your head in his direction, taking in the way he tensed beneath your gaze. "Everybody wants you around here."
It was true, at least in Hoseok's eyes; he had to deal with sleazy men looking you up and down when you danced with him in a strictly PG fashion on nights out or the campus guys who always interrupted your conversations while you ate lunch together. Even he caught himself staring at you from time to time. Or all the time, actually.
"Then explain why I'm some fraternity joke, Hobi?" Tears were salty on your tongue, voice unnaturally croaky. "Twenty bucks was all I was worth."
Hoseok's hand flew out to squeeze your hand comfortingly before he could think better of it. When you didn't pull away he had to fight to string a sentence together, too caught up in the way your hand felt soft beneath his larger calloused one.
"You're worth so much more than that." His words were laced with a sincerity that made the hurt ache a little less. "Everything. To me."
You sniffed, lacing his fingers with yours and letting the drag of his thumb across your knuckles soothe the ache in your temples from the cheap alcohol at the bar and the tear in your heart.
"Sometimes I think that nobody will ever love me."
The confession lay heavy in the air, nearly making Hoseok choke, or perhaps that was the I LOVE YOU's which were fluttering against his ribs like a bird in a cage.
"You know that's not true." The words were hoarse, Hoseok barely able to think through the blood pounding in his ears when you rested your head on his shoulder. From this angle he could see the rise and fall of your chest, slightly calmer now. The lashes pressed to your cheeks which glistened with a dampness in the dim lighting. And the perfect curve of your lips which he could easily capture between his own if he just cupped your cheek and leaned down a little -- no, definitely not thoughts that you should be having about your best friend, especially not like this. Selfishness won out though as he still could not bare to push you away, pushing his face into your hair instead and chastising himself for savoring the moment.
"I love you." It was barely a whisper against your temple and it should have dissipated on his tongue like the sea foam below but the way you hugged your knees to your chest filled him with an unstoppable desperation to make your hurt go away, even if it would twist the ache in his own heart like the point of a knife.
Your sigh was soft. "Yeah, but not like that."
If only you knew...
A hard swallow, another twist of the knife. "How is it any different?"
You averted your gaze and every second that ticked by in silence made his pulse race. Until you were pulling his face into your hands carefully, eyes zoning in on his parted mouth determinedly and before he could question your intentions his lips were pressed against yours in a hard kiss that made his head spin with a lethal mixture of relief and infatuation.
The plushness of your lips was softer than anything he had ever imagined late at night while you slept in his bed and he slept on the couch. It was barely a delicate brush at first, warm breath mingling with his before your lips were molding to his like you knew them well.
The sour taste of vodka lingered on your tongue as it swiped languidly over his bottom lip and he was silently glad he brushed his teeth before picking you up, never expecting to have his mouth on yours ever let alone tonight of all nights.
You broke away with a gentle pressure on his chest, teeth sinking into his lower lip before letting it go with a barely audible pop. When your eyes fluttered open, Hoseok was stiff, lips slightly more swollen than before and you had to admit he looked good with his hair still tousled from sleep and his chest rising with labored breaths.
"That." You murmured, releasing his hand from yours to swing your leg over his lap, mounting yourself on his thighs and ignoring the way the steering wheel pressed into your back. Hoseok's legs parted instinctively. "You don't love me like that."
Hoseok couldn't help the way his breath hitched when your groin landed in his lap, a red flush creeping up his neck when he felt his own crotch begin to stir at the visual image -- his dreams literally coming true -- squeezing his eyes shut and focusing on his ragged breathing to stop himself filling out his pants and making things awkward between you.
"What are you doing?" It was all but a rasp, tongue snaking out to dampen his lips, head pounding with alarm bells which couldn't quite drown out the desire warming in his chest.
"You said that you love me..." His nod was violent, never an action more truthful. You noticed the way he trembled beneath you when your fingers trailed down the front of his hoodie, testing the waters. "Can I trust you to help me forget?"
He very nearly groaned when he felt your breath ghost hotly across his neck to whisper the insinuation into his ear with what you hoped sounded like confidence, seductiveness but what Hoseok recognised as torment and recklessness.
"You can always trust me." You knew he meant it, though you didn't know it stretched as far as this. Neither did he, usually confident in his own self control but not now, as you leaned down to capture his mouth for the second time and maybe the last for all he knew so why not at least try to enjoy it?
Except before your lips could touch and he knew he wouldn't be able to stop himself, Hoseok hesitated.
Deep down he knew that you didn't love him back, that this was the sadness or the alcohol or both talking and that he should tell you to think about if this is what you really wanted and drop you home instead. But the way you looked at him with a dark intensity, almost pleading, shattered and fragile, made him want to do whatever he could to put you back together. He knew that he could make you feel good, even if it would be a temporary reprieve and it would hurt him more in the long run.
But mostly, Hoseok was a selfish person. It was too tempting to let himself believe you wanted him truly in this moment. He was weak and he couldn't resist.
He leaned in a little closer, your foreheads touching. Dear god, he couldn't fight his thoughts, too enamored with the fact that you were really sat in his lap right now, the smell of the perfume he knew all too well overwhelming his senses.
"Okay." Was what his shaky voice managed to stutter. "If you're sure?"
"I'm sure." It was spoken against the corner of his mouth, your fists tangling in his hoodie and pulling him up to meet your mouth in a kiss more intense than the last that made you fizz with an excitement that dulled the hollowness because he was so so warm, pulling you from the cold water in which you drowned and keeping you afloat in his comforting embrace instead.
You kissed him like you always wanted to be kissed, with an urgency that told him how much you wanted -- needed -- to feel him everywhere, a burning in your lower belly that had you tangling your fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck, arching into his chest and seeking a further closeness.
It was hot and breathy and the most sensual sensation Hoseok had ever experienced when your tongue pressed against his with an electric curiosity, steeping him in a passion that set him alight, the flesh of his cheeks burning where your lips caressed them and where your exhales tickled his nose.
His hands hovered nervously over your body, not quite sure where they were supposed to go, and when you smirked into the kiss and pressed his hands firmly to your inner thighs, he quickly got to work rubbing circles into the bare skin which peeked out from beneath your dress. Even when a blush crept onto his cheeks as his fingers brushed the edge of your lace panties, making him forget how to move his lips for a second and clashing your teeth together awkwardly.
Hoseok still couldn't quite believe this was really happening and he mentally chastised himself for messing up. This had to be perfect. Something told him there wouldn't be an opportunity for a do over.
You didn't seem to care though, soft laughter tinkling into his mouth as you wrapped your arms around his neck and found his lips again in the darkness like a perfect puzzle piece. The sound was simultaneously the prettiest and the hottest thing he'd ever heard when it faded into a shallow whine when your clothed heat bumped against his hardness lightly.
"Shit, y/n." Even Hoseok couldn't curb the growl that left his throat when you started to grind in circles against his crotch, the agonizingly slow pace not helping the half hard situation he had going on.
By this point your panties were starting to stick to your folds, a lewd wet spot appearing on Hoseok's grey sweats where you tried to gain some friction on your swollen clit which throbbed for attention every time you felt his cock twitch through the fabric.
"You're so hot." He couldn't help it. The real thing was better than any of the ways he imagined you getting off above him when he was alone with his own hand wrapped around his cock.
The husk in his voice went straight to your heat. If the tent in his pants was anything to go by, his own hips stuttering up to meet the pace of your thrusts, Hoseok wanted you and the knowledge was enough to have you clutching at his hoodie strings, hole clenching for him to fill you up and make you feel whole again. Feel wanted.
Hot palms were kneading the flesh of your ass now, sliding beneath your dress until the fabric was bunched up around your waist. The way Hoseok's eyes widened at your black underwear was cute, distracting you from the reminder that you'd worn them especially for Jungkook. His mouth fell agape when you guided his hand underneath the waistband. "Like them?"
"Love them." He'd seen your underwear a few times before by accident, when you changed at his place and chucked one of his huge hoodies over top of your otherwise bare body, the image burned into his memory enough to get him hot and bothered, mouth dry as he remembered that this time it was a purposeful display, all for him.
The smirk on your lips was wiped away when the feeling of his hand cupping your mound made you whimper, skin on skin much better than the rough friction from his sweats.
Hoseok let out a gasp of his own when the pads of his fingers circled your hole teasingly, surprised to find your arousal already drenching his fingers and making his cock throb painfully against his pants but he wanted this to be about you so he kept his thighs firmly planted to the seat. The idea that it was him who got you so wet was enough to satisfy him anyway. He never thought he, your best friend, could have this sort of effect on you.
"P-please." Impatience was clouding your vision, falling forward to grip the car seat when Hoseok's knuckle dragged your arousal up your slit, brushing briefly across your swollen clit and making you jolt at the electric touch. "Need you so bad, Hobi."
The way you slurred over your words, eyes squeezed shut and chasing the feeling of fullness between your legs made him groan. Even more so the broken way his name escaped your lips, practically begging him to touch you. As much as he would have liked to tease, make you writhe and plead for his fingers, he was too curious to see how fast he could make you fall apart.
The pads of his fingers made quick work of your clit, rubbing fast circles into the bud which made you buck off his lap, head thrown back and exposing the expanse of your neck which Hoseok longed to mark up all nice and pretty and claim as his own but he knew you weren't his so he refrained.
The strangled noise which left you when he slipped his middle finger inside you, promptly followed by a second, nearly tipped him over the edge, clasping the base of his cock through his sweats before he blew his load right then and there at the sheer visual of you using his hand to fuck yourself nice and slow by bracing yourself on the seat behind him.
Not that he could really see much in the dark what with with your panties obscuring your core from view but the lewd squelch as he curled his fingers inside you and the shaky breaths next to his ear punctuated by a string of blissful moans was enough to have him palming himself a little too excitedly, momentarily losing sight of his guilt and succumbing to the moment.
"Mmf, Hoseok gonna cum." The warning only encouraged him more, his wrist snapping at a sinful pace while his thumb toyed with your clit, alternating applying a firm pressure and rubbing it back and forth when he felt it throb deliciously against the pad of his finger.
"Let me see you, baby." There was something about the way he coaxed you through your high, almost commanding as he challenged you to fall over the edge that made the coil in your stomach tighten and suddenly your vision was fading to black and you could barely hear his encouraging but authoritative rasps as your head lolled against the window. "Cum for me, that's it."
He watched with an apt fascination as you came around his fingers, like he'd never seen anything like it before; and it was true, Hoseok was sure you had never looked so pretty and he had never felt so alive as in this moment with you clenching around his fingers, the pretty sighs fogging up the glass all his doing.
The emptiness inside you was back when he slipped out his fingers and wiped them on his hoodie, careful not to stain you with any of your arousal when he wrapped you in his arms, hearts beating in time now.
You stayed like that for a few moments. Him rubbing soothing circles into your back and trying to comprehend what just happened, nerves kicking in at your silence. You breathing in the scent of his woody cologne as your breathing softened.
"Are you okay?" He finally whispered, unable to stop his thumb from tracing your bottom lip when you sat back to look at him, wide eyed and still shaking from the come down of your orgasm.
"Mhm." Your nod was tentative, a funny warmth spreading across your chest at the way his eyes lit up, giving away the grin he was biting his cheek to suppress. "Remind me again why we haven't done this before?"
He stiffened. Because this means more to me than you will ever know...
The tension creeping into the cracks between your bodies made you shift, surprised when you brushed over something which made Hoseok groan.
Adrenaline made you flush as you reached between your legs to grip him through his pants curiously.
"You're still hard." You bit your lip. It drove him crazy.
"Don't worry about me." His laugh was breathy but it faltered when you squeezed his length over the fabric. "I-I'm fine like this."
His cock felt huge in your grip and another bout of lust pooled in your stomach when you realised that you could just slide your panties to the side, loosen the strings of his sweats and easily ride him right there, sure that his girth would stretch you out just how you liked it. And maybe, just maybe, fill the emptiness for good.
"Wanna feel you, though. All of you." Hoseok felt himself melt at the pout on your lips, putty in your hands. Whatever you wanted he'd let you do it. Even if you still weren't his, he knew in that moment that he was irrevocably yours. "Please?"
Your hands found his waistband and he gripped your wrists firmly. You silently wondered what it would be like if he pinned them above your head and had his way with you. But then you caught his concerned expression.
"Are you sure about this? Once we do this we can't go back."
Hoseok still didn't let go after you gave an affirming nod, wanting verbal consent. "I want you, Hoseok."
You could tell that broke him by the fucked out look on his face.
Weak. He was weak when it came to you. And, as he was learning, weak for the way you shimmied his sweats around his thighs and whimpered when his girthy length slapped against the expanse of toned stomach which peeked from below his hoodie. You'd always expected him to be big, the one time you caught him sneaking out of bed after one of your movie nights with a loud and proud boner confirmation enough. But the real thing made you burn with a hunger to sink onto his already leaking cock.
Your small palm was cold when it finally wrapped around his throbbing cock, the sensation a euphoric relief from both the neglect and the years of lusting after this moment. He threw his arm over his eyes, losing himself to the sensation and letting his hips buck into your touch.
Now he was actually here he couldn't think of anything other than the slow slide of your palm down his length, how he wanted to husk that his cock was made for your hand but he knew it wasn't true so he pressed his lips together and listened to the sharp huffs of air which pushed through his nose with every twist of your palm around his engorged head.
"Wait!" Hoseok lurched forward suddenly, fingers digging into your shoulder, face buried and panting in your chest. "Gonna blow my load if you keep that up."
"You don't want to?"
Strands of his hair stuck to his damp forehead and he shook them out of his eyes. His sudden grip on your hips was bruising as he pulled you down into his lap, breath hot against your neck. "Wanna see you fall apart on my cock first."
Hoseok had no idea were the sudden surge of confidence came from. The hormones perhaps or maybe he was just like any other guy, losing himself once he got a hand around his cock. It definitely shouldn't have been the fact that he had his best friend, the girl of his dreams, in his lap and his head was swimming with thoughts of how right this felt even though it was supposed to be so wrong.
"Oh. O-okay." Your core was pulsing again, the authority in Hoseok's voice different from how you were used to. You were quickly realizing you liked the way he smirked when you writhed at his words and braced yourself on his shoulders to pull your panties to the side, ready to just sink down onto his cock then and there.
"Don't." It was firm, commanding. Made you shiver. "Back seat. Now."
You obeyed, practically throwing yourself through the gap in the seats with anticipation, missing Hoseok's warmth during your brief separation until he was hovering over you with a hunger in his eyes that took your breath away. Like he wanted to devour you completely. If he'd asked, you would have let him.
"T-take this off." You mumbled, tugging at the bottom of his hoodie which he pulled over his head with his t-shirt in tow. Hands instantly trailed up his chest, taking in the slight firmness of his shoulders in the dark, not quite remembering when your best friend gotten this broad. There was a pang in your chest. It felt safe here with him, like nothing was wrong with his strong form hovering over you.
By the time he was throwing the pile of fabric in the front seat you were working on your panties, Hoseok's eyes darkening with lust as he watched you kick them off and slide the thin straps of your dress down your arms.
The night air was cool against your nipples, making you gasp. It was a small bliss but you were thankful you didn't wear a bra when Hoseok's bare chest pressed against you skin on skin, instantly warming you.
The drum in Hoseok's chest intensified when he took in your bareness for the first time. His imagination had done no justice. He wanted to commit every inch of you to memory; the perfect swell of your breasts, each soft rise and fall of your chest, soft thighs squeezing around his waist as he gripped the flesh of your ass with a roughness he could no longer curb. Skin warm and flushed and shivering lightly with every delicate touch of his fingers, hair fanned out on the seat like a halo.
Hoseok wanted to say that you were perfect, that he felt like the luckiest man on the planet right now with you laughing at him breathily from where you hid self consciously behind your fingers, a shyness he didn't understand when you looked like this.
He wanted to say that he loved you. To open the car window and scream it into the salty air so that every crashing wave and every grain of sand and every droplet of rain which had started to best down on the car knew it.
But the words wouldn't come so he simply placed a careful kiss to your cheek, roaming downwards and mumbling against your jaw. "Don't hide from me."
The dip of your collar bones proved too enticing to resist, his lips attacking the slightly damp skin and sucking harshly until you were left with a plethora of purple bruises across your neck, the way his teeth grazed your flesh and his tongue laved the burn making your core ache. It was passionate and hungry but somehow tender, as if he wanted to worship every inch of you.
"Hoseok!" You gasped when he found the sweet spot behind your ear as easily as if he had done it a million times before. Like he knew it was there. "What are you doing?"
"Mine." The single word was growled against your jaw line as Hoseok pressed a series of kisses up to your chin, skipping your lips when they parted in waiting in favor of leaving another pretty bruise on the opposite side of your neck. "You hear me? All mine."
Maybe you were lost to the moment or maybe Hoseok's possessive side was the reason your heart started to race, moaning unabashedly now. "Y-yours! I'm yours."
Hoseok couldn't tell if the words went straight to his heart or to his rock hard cock.
Something inside him snapped and he just couldn't hold back any longer, hands running up and down your sides as he kissed down to your breasts, taking a nipple into the heat of his mouth and smirking when you arched into the touch. "Look at you, getting all worked up from just my mouth."
Hands spread your legs roughly and you were at his mercy, enjoying the way he hummed in admiration at your glistening folds.
"All for you." You breathed, believing your words wholeheartedly.
Hoseok's fingers found your sticky clit, stroking with his fingertips lightly. "All for me." He flushed with pride.
"Please fuck me now."
The words he'd always imagined spilling from your lips, breathier in real life he noted. It made him wonder how the other three more sentimental words he wanted to hear would sound.
"Since you asked so nicely." Nerves wracked Hoseok's frame when he realised that this was actually happening, hands shaking as he gripped the base of his cock to line it up with your clenching entrance.
When he finally pushed inside, your warmth swallowing his cock until his hips were flush to yours, it felt like you were finally whole.
The stretch burned, but it soon faded to something close to bliss as you felt every inch of his cock drag against your velvety walls, the head hitting so deep inside you that each thrust took your breath away. It grazed your sweet spot just right, like your bodies were made for one another.
Hoseok didn't give you much time to adjust, wanting to see the way your face twisted with every thrust. Wanting to see how quickly his cock could reduce you to a fucked out mess. "Bet he couldn't fuck you like this."
"W-What?"
"Jungkook." Hoseok licked his lips, trying not to cum when his words made you clench around his sensitive cock. "You were made to take my cock."
"Fuck, Hoseok."
You followed his gaze to where his length slipped out of you, glistening with your arousal, Hoseok running the head through your slit to nudge your clit before it was disappearing into your entrance again. "Look at you, taking my cock so well, hm?"
"Yours." Tears sprung at the corners of your eyes, overwhelmed by the fullness and his sinful mouth. "Only yours."
"Bet he feels so fucking stupid for missing his chance to feel this pretty pussy."
Arms wrapped around his neck, fingers cupping his face and slotting your lips together. Your eyes were shut and it was almost instinctive — did he lean in or did you? — expressing how much you wanted him and how good he was making you feel with a long press to his puckered mouth that felt like rain on a hot summer evening, water breaking a dam. Relief. Like falling into one another's skin.
And every time your hips met skin on skin and you sighed into his mouth, Hoseok felt his heart swell. Even with the expletives slipping past his lips every now and again, he fucked you with a fondness that consumed every inch of his being, one which he felt when he saw you from across the room or when you turned up at his door unexpectedly in the middle of the night.
Love. He hoped you could feel it with every roll of his hips because he couldn't make the words come out.
Then you were reaching a second high, eyes rolling back and soft mewls of overstimulation caressing his ears as you clenched impossibly tight around him and he fell over the edge alongside you, face falling into the crook of your neck as he coated your walls.
In the few moments after, with you pulling him close and his chest pressed to yours, he could feel your erratic heart beat against his skin; and Hoseok swore the final pieces of his own heart fluttered straight out of his chest and into your palms.
Just you, him, and the rolling waves that swelled and crashed achingly in time with every pump of his heart.
But all good things have to end eventually. It was late. You were tired. He had work in the morning. You weren't in love.
There were tissues in the glove box and he helped you clean up, pulling his hoodie over your head when you started to shiver. If you closed your eyes and breathed in his scent it was like his arms were still around you. Hoseok never complained when his own arms prickled with a chill at the loss of your warm body pressed to his.
Then your head was on his shoulder again, both arms wrapped around his waist as you gazed off across the ocean, breathing soft with a hazy smile resting on your lips. The you he was used to back somewhat, if he ignored how much better he knew you now than ever before.
"I love you, you know." Hoseok sounded choked. He didn't mean to.
"I know." A few beats of silence. "Thank you. For making me feel better."
His inhale was shaky as he brushed a few strands of hair from your face, unable to stop the corners of his lips turning up when you glanced up at him through your lashes even despite the hollowness in his chest. "How about I take you to see that movie instead, huh?"
"I'd like that."
And for a blissful moment Hoseok thought that things might be different now.
He clung to that maybe for the short drive home and while he carried your sleeping form into your apartment, letting himself in with the spare key he kept on his keychain and when he tucked you into bed with your shoes placed neatly beside the door.
He believed it even harder when you gave him a sleepy kiss goodbye.
And even when you sent him a mirror picture nearly a week later and he said you looked lovely like he always did while he hoped and he hoped that your date with Park Jimin would be as disastrous as the last, he maintained a slither of hope.
Because one thing would never be different: Hoseok was weak when it came to you.

Series Masterlist
To put it simply, Steve Rogers was seething.
His fists clenched and unclenched by his sides as he paced down the hall towards your apartment, the conversation he’d just had replaying over and over in his mind.
Steve knew that the next time he’d see Brock Rumlow after making their deal wouldn’t be pleasant, but he wasn’t quite expecting to want to punch the guy in the face so fucking badly.
Apparently, things were a lot worse than he’d thought.
“Your sister; she’s a pretty thing, isn’t she?”
The mention of you caused the blond’s heart to drop as he glared at the man in front of him. You weren’t supposed to be involved in any of this mess, so how the hell did Rumlow know about you? “What did you just say?”
An unsettling grin sat on Rumlow’s lips. “I ran into (Y/N) yesterday, well, she literally ran into me. In this exact spot, actually. She didn’t tell you about it when found you in the gym?”
Well, considering Steve wasn’t anywhere near the gym the day before, he was confused as to why you were. If it wasn’t for the fact that he knew your name, Steve would’ve thought that Rumlow was bullshitting just to get on his nerves. He was sure that Rumlow didn’t even know that he had a sister.
But why hadn’t you called him to let him know you were heading to the gym to see him? And since he wasn’t there, why hadn’t you called to ask where he actually was? Something wasn’t adding up, because if Steve wasn’t at the gym, there’s be no reason for you to be around there, right?
For the moment, all Steve knew was that he didn’t want you remotely involved in this, and he’d do whatever it took to keep the scumbag in front of him away from you.
“We’re not dragging my sister into this shit, Rumlow. She stays out of this.” The blond stated firmly. “The deal; what are we fighting for?”
Brock crossed his arms over his chest, his stupid expression not wavering in the slightest. “I can’t lie, Steve, I wasn’t thinkin’ about having our match for a long while. There was never anything I wanted from you, well, until yesterday.”
It didn’t take long for Steve to figure out what the man was insinuating, and he didn’t hesitate to lift his fist and send a strong punch across the asshat’s face once he did.
You. You were what Brock Rumlow wanted.
“Not happening, you son of a bitch.” Steve practically spat at Brock, who had his hand resting over his evidently broken nose. He was expecting a punch in the face for that, truthfully, but Brock wasn’t looking to back down any time soon.
He pointed a finger towards Steve with one hand, wiping the blood from above his lips with his other. “You have some fuckin’ balls, Rogers, thinkin’ you can change the terms of a deal just ‘cause you don’t like them. Doesn’t work like that.”
“You said it would be cash.” The blond spoke through gritted teeth. “Look, we can have the match tomorrow, and if you win, I can get you your cash in a week-”
“I said it could be money.” Rumlow intervened. “But I think I recall you sayin’ it could be anything I want.”
Steve had to refrain from decking the bastard again, as his eyes burned into the brunet’s. “Why her, huh? There’s a shit ton of other girls you could want, why the hell does it have to be her?”
“It’s more fun this way.” He chuckled darkly. “I hate your fucking guts, Rogers, and knowing that I’m about to take something for you and that it’ll break you? Well, it brings me great pleasure. Call me a sadist.”
That sick fuck.
He’d only be able to have you if he won, anyway. But knowing Brock Rumlow, the match would be fought with his rules, meaning Steve would likely barely stand a chance, even if he was the better boxer.
He wasn’t going to do that to you; put you in danger like that. Rumlow could ask for anything else, anything, but not you.
“You know what? Fuck this. I’m not fighting to keep my own sister away from you, get back to me when you want something else.”
Steve was about to walk away, but a rough hand wrapping around his forearm stopped him from doing so.
“You wanna walk away from the deal, then fine. But I have somethin’ on you, Rogers. Something I don’t think you’re gonna want getting out. Especially not to your little sister.”
He couldn’t be serious, right? Sure, Steve wasn’t an angel. He was sure that because of his past with Rumlow that the guy did have some shit on him, but nothing that could ruin him, nothing that would force him into competing in a match where your safety was the prize.
And well, Steve was completely wrong.
Brock Rumlow had something terrible on him, something that could and would ruin everything if it got out, leading to him agreeing to the deal, to the match. You were now involved in the part of his life that he never wanted you to find out about, and Steve blamed himself fully for that.
If you hadn’t ran into Rumlow that day outside of the gym, maybe he wouldn’t have even found out about your existence, and you wouldn’t currently be being used as a pawn in his sick game.
Whatever reason you were wandering outside of the gym for, it better have been good, because Steve was not happy.
Before he arrived at your door, he sent a quick text to Bucky.
At my sister’s apartment now, but we need to talk. Meet me at the gym in an hour?
Bucky swore he felt his heart stop as he read the text.
“Who’s that?” You asked breathily, trailing your fingers down his bare chest, lips pressing softly against his neck.
The last time you’d seen Bucky was only the day before, after he’d told you about Rumlow and the twisted fighting ring he was involved with. That didn’t stop you from inviting him to your apartment again, however. Truthfully, you just couldn’t get enough of him.
Things got hearted pretty quickly, like they usually did, and you’d soon found yourself straddling him on your couch, like you usually did.
Though, your brother was about to cut your time with Bucky short.
“It’s Steve.” The boxer swallowed, your brother’s name being said making you pull back almost immediately. “He said he’s here.”
Your brows furrowed. “Here?”
A heavy fist knocked against your door, causing both you and Bucky to jump.
“Here.”
The two of you shared a momentary look of alarm before you scrambled off his lap, almost tripping over the coffee table as you ran to the nearest mirror, fixing your smeared lip-gloss and adjusting your shirt.
Bucky swiped his own shirt from the arm of the couch, pulling it on hurriedly as a string of inaudible curse words fell from his lips.
“Uh...” Your eyes darted around the room, lingering on your bedroom door. “My bedroom; you can hide in there.”
“Are you sure-”
“There’s no time for a discussion, James.” You gently shoved him towards the door, then did a one-eighty and headed back towards your front door.
With a deep breath out, you plastered a neutral look on your face and opened the door, as if you weren’t just sucking hickeys onto the best friend of the blond stood in front of you, and said best friend wasn’t hiding in your bedroom.
Your nonchalance soon faded into genuine worry, however, as you opened the door to find your brother wearing a concerned expression.
“Steve, is everything alright?” You questioned hesitantly.
“Can I come in?” He avoided the question, but you nodded quickly, opening the door wider to let him slip through into the living area.
He didn’t sit down, or even stand still - the man paced slowly back and forth into front of the couch, and it made a pit form in your stomach.
“Stevie, tell me what’s going on.” You pressed calmly, hoping that by remaining calm you could ease your brother’s tenseness.
The blond turned to look at you as you spoke, eyes flicking to the floor for a few seconds as if he was considering his next words carefully, before looking back up at you. “What were you doing at the gym on Thursday?”
Shit.
You wanted to stay calm, act natural and pretend that you didn’t know what he was talking about. But you’d never been a good liar, or any sort of liar at all. You didn’t lie to Steve, and it hurt to even ever think about doing so, but what other choice did you have?
“I, uh...” You twiddled your thumbs nervously, unable to think up any sort of lie in the moment, prompting Steve’s eyes to harden. “I don’t know.”
‘I don’t know’? Jesus Christ...
Thursday was the day you bumped into Rumlow, and other than Bucky, nobody knew about the encounter other than the guy himself. Did that mean Steve had a run in with him too? Is he the reason that Steve knew you were at the gym?
“I’m gonna need you to do better than ‘I don’t know’, (Y/N).” Your brother persisted, something flashing momentarily in his eyes - concern, maybe? Fear?
A part of you just wanted to let it out, to admit that you’d fallen hard for his best friend and that he was the reason you’d been taking trips to the gym. But now wasn’t the time.
Your eyes refused to meet his, and in your peripheral vision, you noticed something; his hand. It was red, bruised. Like he’d punched something, and yes, of course he’d been punching things - he was a boxer. But you could tell by injury that his hand wasn’t wrapped or gloves when he hit whatever he did.
“What happened to your hand?” You couldn’t help but ask.
“Hurt it while training.” Steve responded vaguely, making you scoff.
“You know, you’re not such a good liar either.”
The blond had a solemn look on his face as he let out a long sigh. “Then how about we don’t lie to each other, huh?”
There was a short silence, indicating that Steve obviously wanted you to be honest with him first. Okay, a reason you were outside of the gym; you just needed a little white lie... Something believable, but who else would he believe you were at the gym for other than him?
“Peter Quill.” You blurted out, your brother’s head snapping up as soon as you said the name. Well, apparently this was the direction your lie was going in. “I... was at the gym to see Peter.”
Steve obviously knew that the two of you were friends at college, but you were in different majors. It’s not like you were working on a project or studying together. The only other reason you’d want to see him at the gym would be... no. There was no way that Peter fucking Quill was the mystery new guy in your life. No way in hell.
The blond looked totally and utterly baffled as a nervous laugh escaped his mouth. “Wait, he’s not- he can’t be the guy...”
The lie only had to go on for a little while before you could tell Steve who the real mystery guy was, what harm could it do to just... go along with it?
Your brother watched your eyes shift anxiously before you gave him a slow nod, and before he could go off at you, you quickly opened your mouth to speak first. “Look, I know what you’re going to say-”
“That the kid is nowhere near good enough for you? You’re right, that’s exactly what I was gonna say.” The blond began to pace, and when Steve was pacing, well... that’s when you knew that he was stressed. “So all that stuff you said, about your new guy being mature, and caring, that was about... Peter Quill?”
“Yeah, it was.” You could picture Bucky in your bedroom now, probably trying not to peel over in laughter at how stupid this lie was.
“But- but Quill is... you know he lives on hot cheetos and energy drinks, right? I’ve never seen him eat a piece of fruit in his life. And he sings obnoxiously loud in the showers at the gym, and he skips most of his college classes-”
“I know, Steve.” That wasn’t a lie, you’d been around Peter long enough to know that he was a typical, doesn’t really give a shit about anything college boy, yet he wasn’t comepletely intolerable. “But I still like him, and I still care about him. I know you’re not his biggest fan, but it’d mean a lot to me if you just tried to like him. For me.”
You weren’t sure how you were going to explain it to Peter that he had to pretend he was dating you to keep your brother off your back about the guy you were actually seeing, but like you said, it was just until you were ready to tell him the truth.
However, the more lies that your lips, the more you just wanted to let the cat out of the bag. Lying to Steve was unfair, and completely against your morals. After your mom passed, you vowed never to hide anything from Steve; your sadness, any of your feelings, anything for that matter. It had only been you and him for so long, and lying to him just felt so wrong. Bucky wasn’t just a casual fling like you thought he’d be - he meant so much more to you, and hiding that from Steve wasn’t something you wanted to do for much longer.
You’d have to talk to Bucky about it once Steve left.
Steve kept quiet for a moment, a crease between his brows as he considered your words. It looked like he wanted to protest, but instead he sighed yet again. “Fine, I’ll... I’ll go easy on him, for now. But I swear, kid, the moment he messes up-”
“Yes, Steve, I know the drill.” You couldn’t help but grin faintly. In all honesty, if he ever had his heart broken, you’d probably act the same way. Even just seeing his bruised knuckles made a wave of rage rise in your chest. “Now, back to you. What has you so worked up?”
Slowly, Steve lowered himself to sit on the couch, and you sat on the opposite side to him, legs crossed and a couch cushion pulled to your chest. For a moment, it felt like you were kids again. Your brother didn’t have the best experience in school, when he used to be short and skinny but too stubborn to walk away from bullies twice the size of him. Whenever there’d be some sort of incident at school, you’d make your brother sit down and talk to you about it, you curled up in the corner of the couch like you were now, and him with his elbows against his knees like he was sat. Even when you were only ten and he was fourteen, you still wouldn’t let him get himself down.
Though this time, you knew what was up. He’d somehow found out, probably from the guy himself, that you’d ran into Rumlow that Thursday. If he was actually going to tell you the full deal with Rumlow, well, you were going to have to find out.
Steve started speaking with a nervous exhale. “You ran into a guy outside the gym that day, right?”
You nodded quickly, hoping your less than adequate acting skills could get you through the conversation smoothly. “Dark hair, around your age, right?”
“Right.” The man confirmed. “Well, I had a run in with him too, yesterday. It’s just... I’ve got a bit of a bad history with him. He trains at an opposing club, doesn’t play by the rules in matches, and if he’s gonna keep roaming around our gym, then I don’t want you around there, for me or for... Peter.”
Well, that was your Thursday visits to the gym to see Bucky done with, and you weren’t too happy about that.
“So he’s an asshole, why does that mean I can’t be around there anymore?” You pressed. You knew he was more than just your everyday asshole, but you’d never known Steve to back down against another guy. And you weren’t one do so, either.
“He’s more than-” The blond started, and for a moment you thought he was going to tell what Bucky had already let you in on, but he refrained instead. “He’s... look, just let me worry about him, alright? All you need to do is stay away from-”
And there it was. He might as well have just told you ‘not to worry your pretty little head about it’, because that’s what he was basically saying. You weren’t a doll; you were delicate like china and you wished that people would stop treating you as if you were.
“How is this you being honest with me, Steve?” You intervened, clutching your cushion tighter in annoyance. “You came in here with steam practically coming out of your ears and now it’s nothing to worry about?”
“Kid, you don’t understand-”
“Of course I don’t understand!” You exclaimed, standing from your seat and glaring down at your brother. “You’re not giving me anything to understand.”
“He’ll hurt you, (Y/N).” Steve abruptly stood too, his expression more serious than you’d ever seen it before. “If you know who he is or what he does, he’ll find you and he’ll hurt you. And now that he knows you’re my sister, he’s- he’s using you to...”
Your voice sounded as quiet as a mouse in comparison to his outburst. “Using me to what, Steve?”
“To fuck with me.” He pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers, doing his best to control his breathing. You hadn’t seen your brother this angry, this distressed, in a long time, and it pained you.
You knew Bucky could hear every word of what was going on, and you could only imagine that he wanted to come out and help Steve calm down, and figure out what the hell was going on.
“Stevie,” You took a step towards the blond, considering placing your hand on his forearm before deciding against it, not wanting to agitate him. “Did he... threaten you?”
He remained still for an unnerving amount of time, but you didn’t rush him with his answer. It was almost silent, the only sound in the room being Steve’s heavy breathing in an attempt to stop himself from getting too worked up. His eyes were closed too, only for a moment longer, until they snapped open and over to you.
“Just please, stay away from the gym.” Your brother said, pleaded even, before he made a beeline to your front door.
So he was just going to leave? After telling you that Rumlow was possibly after you, he was leaving? He hadn’t even told you how his hand got all bruised.
“Wait, where are you going?” You called after him, rushing to try and catch up with his large strides.
“I need time to think, alright?” He didn’t meet your gaze as he made his way back down the hall, and eventually out of your sight.
It was no use trying to make him stay, you’d learned that when he was slowly hitting rock bottom in the early days after your mom passed away, and you’d barely be around him for five minutes before he left to spend some more time alone.
What if it was happening again? What if everything happening with Rumlow was pushing him to that point again?
The thought made your stomach turn.
You flinched when you felt a hand on your shoulder, but soon calmed down when you realised it was only Bucky. He must’ve figured that Steve had left suddenly, and that it was safe for him to stop hiding.
The boxer closed your front door, and turned to you hesitantly, concerned eyes scanning your features. “What’re you thinkin’, (Y/N)?”
He wasn’t going to ask you if you were okay, because of course you weren’t okay. But he could help you figure out your muddled thoughts, and that’s just what you needed for the moment.
Obviously, he’d heard the whole conversation. At least that meant you didn’t have to attempt to explain everything that’d just happened.
You bit the inside of your cheek, contemplating what the fuck you actually were thinking. “I’ve screwed all of this up, haven’t I?”
“What?” Bucky crinkled his brows, yet his voice remained gentle. “Why would you say that?”
A humourless laugh left your lips. “Well, if my dumb ass hadn’t ran into Brock Rumlow the other day, then maybe he wouldn’t be somehow using me to fuck with Steve, whatever that means.”
What did that even mean? Maybe your brother wasn’t exactly the only one that was being threatened.
Bucky sighed, reaching to brush a strand of hair out of your face, letting his hand rest against you jaw. “You can’t blame yourself for any of this, you hear me?”
“But-”
“No, no buts.” He placed his other hand on the other side of your face, so you were looking him right in the eye. “I’m gonna talk to Steve, and I’m gonna find out what that piece of shit is playing at. He won’t touch you-”
“It’s not me that I’m worried about, Bucky.” Your voice cracked, and you swallowed the lump in your throat. “I’ve never heard Steve sound so scared. You heard him yourself. I- I don’t know how the fuck he’s involved with him, but Rumlow must’ve said something to him yesterday that’s gotten him so shaken, a-and I don’t care if it’s about me. I don’t care b-because he can go and fuck himself, frankly... but if he’s using me to get Steve t-tangled up in his sick fucking games, then I feel like t-that’s on me, and I don’t know how to h-help him out of this one.”
You were hiccuping at this point, nose becoming stuffy and hot tears spilling over your lower lashes, because you couldn’t help him out of... well, whatever the hell was going on. As much as you didn’t want to allow Rumlow to get to you, you’d been told by the two people you trusted most that he was dangerous. He didn’t fuck around, and while you refused to believe that Steve could be involved with him for the wrong reasons, Rumlow had something against him.
And you weren’t so sure if you wanted to know what it was.
“C’mere.” You heard Bucky whisper in between your sobs, and you didn’t waste any time before circling your arms around his waist and burying your face into his chest. His hands moved from your face, one wrapping firmly around your shoulders and the other rubbing your back gently. “Babydoll, listen to me.”
Squeezing your eyes shut, you nodded as best you could without moving away from him in the slightest.
“Rumlow’s only dangerous because of his involvement in the fighting ring; without it, he’s isn’t shit. He’s only using you to get to Steve because he knows that he can’t get to him on his own, and he knows how much Steve cares about you. He doesn't understand what it’s like to care about anyone else other than himself, and guys like that... they never win. Whatever he wants from Steve, he won’t get it, because Steve doesn’t ever let guys like him win, especially when they’re putting his sister in danger. He’s gonna come around, alright? I’m gonna help him out.”
You let out a long breath as you nodded weakly, every fibre in your body trusting that Bucky would be able to help your brother through what was going on.
You guessed that you could only hope everything didn’t go to shit in the process.
“Guess I’ve gotta let Peter know that he’s my new boyfriend now, huh?” You sniffled, your voice a little lighter than before.
Bucky chuckled heartily, and you felt the vibrations in his chest against your cheek. “Probably, unless you want Steve asking him all sorts of questions and him not knowing what the hell’s goin’ on.”
You chuckled too, weaker than Bucky had, but it was still genuine.
“...and James?”
“Yeah, gorgeous?” He spoke against your skin as he pressed a kiss to the crown of your head.
“Can we, uh...” You lifted a hand away from Bucky’s waist to wipe away the remaining tears from you cheeks. “I know it’s not the best time right now, but can we just... consider telling Steve about us?”
You didn’t miss the way his body tensed at the question. It wasn’t that he didn’t want Steve to find out about the two of you yet, but he honestly wasn’t sure how his best friend would react. Especially since the reason you ran into Rumlow was because you were at the gym, and you were only at the gym to see him.
But, he wasn’t planning on losing you any time soon. He was in it for the long run with you, and he really didn’t want to lie about it to his friend anymore.
The boxer nodded, planting another reassuring kiss on your forehead and tilting your chin up to look at you properly. Your eyes were still a little red, tear tracks faintly evident on your cheeks. It was the first time he’d seen you cry, and it wasn’t something he especially liked seeing. “I wanna tell him too, but like you said, it’s not the best time right now. After all of this is over, yeah? We’ll figure somethin’ out.”
The corners of your mouth upturned. “Yeah, okay.”
Time had gotten on since Steve had asked Bucky to meet him at the gym, and he could only hope that things hadn’t gotten worse with Rumlow. However, judging by how anxious he was when talking to you, his hopes weren’t necessarily high.
He was reluctant to leave you alone after what happened; he knew that you’d be worrying about your brother continuously until you knew exactly what was happening, but you assured him that you’d be fine with time, and that you’d even invite Natasha over for the night to try and take your mind off things.
After enough convincing and a series of sweet kisses, Bucky eventually pried himself from your company and headed down to the gym, where Steve was pacing the almost empty gym, thoughts filled with doubt and worry racking his mind.
“You want out, Rogers? Fine, but you owe me. One match; I decide the time, the place, the rules, and the prize. Don’t delete my number - I’ll be in touch.”
The words were carved deep into Steve’s mind from the moment they left Brock Rumlow’s lips. It had always confused him, why out of everything the guy could want from him, he only wanted one boxing match. He’d never fought Rumlow before, but he’d seen Steve fight enough times to know that he wasn’t easily beaten.
But if that was what he wanted, then sure, why not agree to it? He’d likely win it anyway, and even if he didn’t, the prize was probably going to be cash. The blond had money put away for a rainy day, and he guessed the match against Rumlow would count as one of those if he did end up losing.
He was naive to think everything would be that simple.
Because Rumlow wanted you as the prize. He’d been waiting, like a predator for a chance to cleanly catch its prey, for a prize worth wanting to come along. He didn’t need any more cash or weapons, but Steve’s sister? That would be interesting.
You were young, beautiful, you had a certain charm to you that a lot of guys Rumlow knew would like. You were a girl that he wanted at his gym, a girl that would perhaps earn him quite a bit of cash when he was ready to trade you off.
He knew for a fact that Steve would object to letting you be the prize, even if he was sure that he’d win, Rumlow knew your brother wouldn’t put you on the line like that. But that was okay, because he had something, a video, that would shut Steve right up, and it ended up doing exactly that.
Steve couldn’t believe he was being blackmailed. Fucking blackmailed by Brock fucking Rumlow. He didn’t even realise he was being recorded at the time, he hadn’t even thought about that moment since it happened, and if that recording got into the hands of the police?
Well, Steve Rogers would be behind bars for life.
He paced even more, getting more antsy with each minute that Bucky still hadn’t arrived at the gym for, even flinching when he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.
His face fell at the message.
It’s time, Rogers. Match will be next Friday, 8pm, my gym. And bring your sister, we’ll want our prize as soon as possible after we win.
In all honesty, Steve didn’t know how the fuck things were going to turn out.

A casual Sonic Forces rewrite + some headcanons, because why not
Part 1 – Infinite and Episode Shadow
Just a warning: none of the images used here belong to me! They all belong to SEGA – the game screenshots, the official art and the comic pages.
Next Part ->
I have yet to see the Sonic Movie, because the universe seems devoted on not letting me do so, for some reason. Being as desperate for Sonic content but as determined to not receive spoilers from the movie as I am, I decided to go for the next coolest thing: writing really long and random posts about a game that came out three years ago and no one cares about anymore.
This shall be fun!
(Update: as of posting this, I have finally watched the movie! But I don’t want to throw this away, so I’ll post it anyway. We can have a nice talk about the movie later.)
*“Fist Bump instrumental” intro plays*
*“This is Our World: a New Hero” plays in the background*
I’m the type of person to always try and see the best in every game, and Sonic Forces is no different. Despite its obvious flaws, I love this beautiful game! Mostly the concept of it is one of the coolest things I’ve seen this last decade, but the execution… lacks on a few things. I mostly just fill in the gaps with my imagination and enjoy it nevertheless, but, upon going through the tag and seeing that some of my concerns were shared by other people, I decided to try my hand at rewriting Sonic Forces juuust a tiny bit. Just for fun!
For this first part (and I have no idea how many parts we should have), I’d like to share some of my ideas about…
*Infinite’s Theme plays in the background as I try hard not to sing along*
Oh, my poor jackal boy, what do we do with you? Despite being so heavily promoted and having an undeniably awesome theme song, Infinite’s backstory and general development throughout the game came out as lacking, having the self-proclaimed edgelord become a laughingstock amongst most fans. Nevertheless, I still love Infinite, and it saddens me how much wasted potential he had; it’s like they were trying to write a really interesting character, but gave up halfway through.
So yeah, let’s talk about it. And let us begin with his origin story.
I believe you are all familiar with this scene:
I… I want to defend my boy here, I really do. But honestly, the way this was portrayed, it just sounded like he was throwing a childish tantrum. It seems as if his entire motive for becoming a villain was “Shadow beat him and called him weak”; dude, you’re not the only one: Shadow does this to basically everybody who’s ever crossed his way! We’re not given a reason as to why Infinite gets so bloody offended, nor are we given a reason why we should care.
So, how can we fix this? I think we should firstly focus less on “I’M NOT WEEEEAAAAK!!! URRAAAAGHH!!!” and more on:
It doesn’t need to be – and I don’t even think it can be – as sad of a situation as the Rivaille Squad in Shingeki No Kyojin or anything, but I believe that showing us that Infinite lost something important would already do wonders to his backstory.
The simplest way – that is, the way that doesn’t majorly change how things go, but does give the jackal a clearer motive – to do this would involve the ever so humble inclusion of two new cutscenes and one new in-game battle, plus a few tweaks to some already existing scenes.
Episode Shadow begins not with the usual reading introduction, but rather, with Shadow’s voice. “I was a couple of months before the Doctor took over the world. The first time I encountered him… I didn’t know what he would become.” Then we open with what used to be a couple of months prior (aka where they presented Infinite’s memory, aka where they screwed up), so we’ll go through things in a chronological order instead of having a flashback inside of a prequel, because that’s confusing AF.
Now, instead of starting the Mystic Jungle level immediately, we should get a small cutscene: Shadow gliding through the jungle, cool camera angles/lighting and all – maybe something similar to the opening scene of Episode Shadow in Sonic 06? –, on his way to invade Eggman’s base as a voice coming from the hedgehog’s communicator reminds him about his mission (yep, that’s some subtle exposition to the audience so we don’t think Shadow is there just because). My idea for said mission would be the simple task of retrieving a Chaos Emerald (yeah, remember those?) from Eggman. Nothing too serious; just another day, another emerald stolen like usual; we’ve seen this before, there’s no need for a long dialogue.
As the black-and-red blur crosses the screen, the camera pans to a group of people hiding above in the trees: Squad Jackal. Infinite is not among them. One of the jackals asks “where’ the boss?” to which another one replies that he’s on the other side of the base/talking to the Doctor/whatever and they have no time to waste; their mission is to take down the intruder and protect the base. We get something in the lines of “the boss is counting on us. Expect no mercy, show no weakness. Let’s go!” and the camera fades out as the squad drops from the trees and runs after Shadow.
I believe that having the phrase “show no weakness” – or any possible reference to “I’m not weak”, really – appear earlier as seemingly common and then have it become something the character gives a lot of importance to due to consequences and parallels sounds a bit more interesting than having Infinite’s inferiority complex come out of nowhere.
The Mystic Jungle level plays as usual, except the dialogue in the background doesn’t say that “the Defence Squad has already been completely annihilated”, but rather that “the Defence Squad is on the case. They’re the best mercenaries there are, Shadow won’t stand a chance!” because Doctor Eggman is naive like that.
Once we reach the end of the level there’s another change: a boss battle against Squad Jackal. You see, we don’t want to hear the squad was taken down like some sort of lazy exposition, because it feels incomplete; we want to participate, we want to be the protagonist and see with our own eyes just what is Infinite’s squad. This gives faces and voices to something that will become an important plot point instead of just telling us “yeah, this happened or whatever”. This could also play as some sort of sympathy point for Infinite, because we, while in control of Shadow, took down his squad; it makes the villain’s animosity towards Shadow and his general anger at least a bit more understandable.
The idea is that this battle should play as some sort of field fight – that is, differently than most boss battles in Sonic Forces, this is not a racing track where you attack your enemy while running, but rather a large secluded area, much like the one we get in the fight between the Custom Hero and the DeathEgg Robot –, where squad members would attack individually in different patterns before going for a group attack. The individual jackals would have both projectile (perhaps something like a wispon, knives or some Eggman invention to keep it family friendly enough?) and close-ranged attacks, while the group attack would consist of this mass of wild jackals changing at you, trying to run you over. The opportunity windows could be either the moment when the opponents switch or band together for the group attack.
(I don’t know, maybe some of you can think of better ways to fight the Jackal Squad? This is just a random idea! I’d like to hear different ones!)
Once the fight is over, we get another cutscene: Shadow stands among the fallen jackals – don’t worry, they’re… sleeping… yeah, there’s no visible blood, they’re not dead… except they’re totally dead – and looks around for a second or two. His expression is indecipherable, and he soon leaves without saying a word – one might say he feels bad for them, or maybe he doesn’t give a damn; we leave that open to interpretation. Not a moment passes and we get to see the leader of the squad arriving at the scene. The camera moves in a circle around him as he looks at his fallen comrades in shock. How did this happen? They were the strongest, how could his whole squad be dead? This is a rather touching moment, where Infinite sticks his sword (because in his origins comic he used to have a super cool red sword and I want to pretend we have a reason for it not existing in the game) to the ground; there’s a feeling of anger and vengeance going on as we get a closer look at the last standing jackal. He clenches his fists and faces the direction of Shadow. “Expect no mercy, show no weakness,” he says in an infuriated, strangled voice. He starts to run and the camera fades out.
(Look at his sword and his squad, man. I do wish we could have seen them in the game…)
When the camera fades in again, we get that exact same cutscene from the game. Blah blah, “destroyed my squad”, blah blah, “ultimate mercenary”, a legendary ass whooping and Infinite falls to the ground, weak, pathetic and defeated.
Now, I’d like to add just a few lines to their dialogue, because this:
Doesn’t really sound like Shadow to me. I mean, man: you beat this random guy to the ground, called him worthless and pathetic out of nowhere and then you just leave? I know Shadow is rather apathetic and he’s supposed to be savage and all, but this just felt kind of out of place…
So instead of going full rude mode, what Shadow actually says is:
‘You’re part of the Defence Squad, aren’t you? Why would a bunch of mercenaries work for the Doctor? What is he hiding?’
‘The doctor paid well enough to not have his secrets spilled,’ Infinite retorts while trying to get up. He’s too hurt to do much, but he’s still willing to fight. He looks at Shadow with fiery eyes as he continues, ‘My squad… you took them down like they were nothing… why wouldn’t someone as strong as you be a mercenary?’
‘Mercenary work is for the weak,’ the hedgehog states matter-of-factly. ‘I’ve sworn to protect, not to follow the dirty line of work you did.’
This blows Infinite’s mind and he simply stares at Shadow, dumbfounded. He murmurs, ‘weak? How dare you, I’m not… We’re not weak! We’re the squad o-’
‘Where’s the Chaos Emerald?’ The jackal’s statement is completely ignored. However, Infinite is having none of this, so tries to attack Shadow once again in a fit of rage, only for the hedgehog to give him a signature roundhouse kick free of charge.
(Image merely illustrative)
‘What a waste of my time,’ Edgelord Number 1 says, aware that he’s not getting any useful information from this. He steps closer and Edgelord Number 2 flinches, ‘here’s some advice: don’t show your face around me ever again, or else I will finish you.’
And with that, Shadow teleports away, leaving Infinite to his existential crisis. He wasn’t able to avenge his friends; he wasn’t able to protect the base; heck, he wasn’t even able to hold his title of ultimate mercenary! How useless of a leader was he? Were mercenaries truly weak? Everything they’ve done… was it all worthless? Show no weakness… what did it even mean? They were all defeated, and Infinite can’t shake the feeling that he’s to blame for it. Wasn’t he supposed to be the best?
‘What is this? I’m…’ He looks at his hands, which are trembling ‘I’m shaking? I flinched? I... We failed… How pathetic… All because…’
Infinite stops as if he’s just gotten a moment of clarity. He then gets up and starts walking inside Eggman’s base. ‘I’m not weak,’ he says in a decided, chilling whisper; it’s almost scary. The view is set at the entrance, right in front of the jackal so that he starts blocking the light from the outside as he slowly walks towards the camera - while saying in that scary voice, “No mercy, no weakness”.
(I can totally see Liam O’Brien delivering this line perfectly…)
Then the last expository narrating happens about the same, except that Shadow narrates it – giving continuity to the fact that he was the one who started narrating this episode for a reason I will talk about later –, so we change a few words to match his speech more; it’s all in the third person and very husky and brooding, but with a subtle note of dread (oh, if only Jason Griffith would voice it… No disrespect to Kirk Thornton, but he just doesn’t hit Shadow’s perfect voice like Jason did; for me, at least. His Orbot voice is fantastic, though).
Now, instead of having Infinite looking forward for a few seconds before he gets the Phantom Ruby out of nowhere and places it in his chest very anti-climatically, we’ll do something different: as soon as he puts on the mask, he starts walking away, and we change settings to a dimly lit room, where we see Infinite from behind, fitting the frame perfectly. Following the beat of the background music, the camera changes to a close shot of his masked face as he’s holding the Phantom Ruby, which is glowing, reflecting on his mask and giving us a beautifully red-lit scene; it’s possible to hear very low, indiscernible whispers coming from the jewel. We then hear a small, evil chuckle from the masked jackal – he already sounds rather different from the guy who stuck his sword to the ground in honour of his friends earlier. The screen goes black, the whole “I was… Reborn!” thing dramatically happens in Infinite’s echoing voice and the not-flashback is over.
(I know this last part was quite specific and oddly detailed, but I had the scenes very clear in my head I wanted to try conveying how intimidating it looked to me o3o)
Ok, now that that’s done, prepare yourselves for an intermission. And by that, I mean prepare yourselves for a long analytical commentary on what I just wrote.
*”This is Our World: Phase 2″ plays in the background*
(Who is Shadow working for again? I don’t even know, man…)
Shadow isn’t just the guy who called Infinite pathetic. He’s the guy who killed Infinite’s squad (his friends) without any apparent remorse – and to be hypocrite as to say he’d sworn to protect when he just did something like this (yeah, Infinite doesn’t know any context of Shadow’s life, so of course he doesn’t understand what he meant); the guy who ruined everything he had going with his new job as leader of the Defence Squad; the guy who put him several levels under what he thought he was; the guy who questioned his entire way of living and the guy who put him under a lingering threat; “don’t show your face around me ever again” feels more intimidating now. Not only that, but, despite how Infinite might hate Shadow, he recognizes him as strong, admirable even – “why wouldn’t someone as strong as you be a mercenary?” Remember that Infinite himself is a mercenary; to actually acknowledge someone would be good at something you’re good at, specially someone you don’t like, has to be a sign of admiration, albeit a frustrating one. All of this puts a lot more of weight on how Infinite thinks of Shadow and why being stronger than the hedgehog is so important to him.
I made it so that “expect no mercy, show no weakness” is something like the Jackal Squad’s motto, their philosophy. I like to think it means that they should never count on someone’s mercy, for their enemies won’t spare them; they should always go into battle aware that they might actually be fighting for their lives. At the same time, they should always stand their ground and never let anyone think they can take advantage of a squad member. This is what the jackals live for. But seeing as Infinite’s world has just been shattered and he failed hard on everything, he revises his mentality. “No mercy, no weakness” is what he’s going for now, as he wants to be above everyone, he wants to effectively be the strongest and for people to know that; he will be the one who doesn’t spare others, and he won’t be weak at all. Never again would a failure cost him that much, for never again would he fail.
To have Infinite place the Phantom Ruby on his own chest in Episode Shadow contradicts the opening scene of the main campaign. Remember the episode is a prequel to Sonic Forces’ main game, so it shouldn’t be completely detached from it; things must make sense when put together. As the main game begins by showing us Infinite inside of a tube in Eggman’s lab, we can assume one of two things: he’s either a robot/biological experiment created entirely by the scientist, or he’s a guy who’s been experimented on, thus Eggman was the one who placed the Phantom Ruby on him. With this in mind, it wouldn’t make sense to show us Infinite doing something if you’re going to tell us that he couldn’t have possibly done it on his own. But to have him hold the ruby as someone who deeply desires its powers and who listens to its ominous whispering? Not only does it line better with the aforementioned scene, but it also makes Infinite seem more prone to the ruby’s power (instead of just… you know, “random angry dude”).
As this intermission has gone on long enough, I’ll only make a brief commentary on the Phantom Ruby: I like the idea of the ruby being somewhat alive and exerting influence over Infinite. Now, I won’t say it’s the kind of influence where it justifies his horrible behaviour or the awful things he did. It’s less “mind-control” and more “that best friend who always encourages you and never calls you out on your bullshit”. Its grooming Infinite’s ego and just nudging him to keep making bad decisions, to keep shutting himself in this new reality where he’s all powerful and above everyone else. So it’s the jackal’s pride, spite and grief, along with Eggman’s overall encouragement and the Phantom Ruby’s influence all put together that, in a general sense, make Infinite what he is. (I can go into more detail about this idea once I make a Part 2.)
Mission Accomplished: “angry bitchy boy turned edgy, OP and unimpressed” changed his status to “tragic boy turned edgy, bitter and extremely power-hungry”.
Intermission’s over, let’s get back to the story!
With Infinite’s backstory slightly redone (or rather, shown under a different light), I could stop right here. But I don’t want to, oh no! I say we take this a few steps further and just finish Episode Shadow! Yeah, I told you this was going to be a long post.
*”Battle with Infinite: Second Bout” plays in the background*
Ok, now we cut to a few months later, where Episode Shadow would originally begin. Rouge comments that Omega was on recon mission in that “unknown base of operations that seems to be totally outside the chain of command for Eggman’s army” (whatever that is supposed to mean) when he spotted an unidentified masked person with strange energy readings and an unknown battle ID. Omega reported a “large scale troop” and… that’s it, he just stopped talking. Rouge then talks about that “new weapon” Eggman was supposedly developing and sends Shadow to the base to investigate along with Omega. She makes a remark about how they should get the entire Team Dark together for this (“It should be fun”), but Shadow dismisses the idea, saying that he’s enough on his own. “Omega said the same thing. You two go together like chilli and hot dogs.”
We can keep this at the whole “dialogue on screen” thing. I don’t really mind and it sure spares the budget.
The City stage plays as usual, except the dialogue in the background changes a bit, because Team Dark bickering (or just talking in general, I love this team so much) is my jam.
‘E-123 Omega here. Extermination proceeding without incident. No problems to report.’
‘Omega!’ Rouge exclaims, ‘Why have you stopped responding earlier? We- wait, extermination? This is supposed to be a recon mission, what are you doing?!’
‘I was spotted. Priorities conflicted; therefore I decided to eliminate the enemy altogether. New Mission Objective: Defeat Eggman.’
‘But you can’t go making a scene like that!’
‘See, this is what happens when you send the giant killer robot for this kind of op,’ Shadow sasses. And I’ll imagine Jason’s voice for this too, thank you.
‘I have several reports of recon missions where you retaliated, Shadow.’
‘I might have to join you boys soon enough. I turn my back for five seconds and this happens…’ Rouge comments in a tired voice.
Omega is ready to start robotically recounting the reports of failed recon missions where Shadow retaliated, but he is suddenly cut by static and the vague sound of the Phantom Ruby. Rouge tries to contact him again and we get small bits of his original lines here – “All sensors offline”, “Casualty report”, “Unidentified system intrusion. Emergency withdrawal!” and “I am E-123 Omega, the most powerf-sjfpstswq”, that stuff – before his communication is completely cut. Shadow asks something like “what’s going on?”, but his communication with Rouge is cut as well. We play whatever’s left of the level in silence (except for the sweet background music).
(Oh yeah, this happened or whatever…)
Now, I know the next scene is a screen dialogue again, and I know I just said I don’t mind it, but watching this:
… Is so bloody uncomfortable. This feels dumb. This is so dumb. I feel like they robbed us an epic scene in exchange of some awkward reading with absolutely no context. What the hell is “!” supposed to mean?! What did Infinite do?! If I wanted to imagine the action scenes all on my own, I’d spend my time daydreaming! What, did they not know what to do here so they just threw in some random lines to fill the gap between this and the next level?!
… Sorry, I got a little carried away. This simple scene frustrates me a lot by not existing. So yeah, we’re throwing in a cutscene.
(I just noticed how salty this post is getting. This was not my intention at all, I still love this game, oh dear…)
Shadow reaches the edge of the city and encounters a dark silhouette hovering just above the flames that cover the ground; there’s debris scattered everywhere. The figure has its back turned, and the world seems to glitch ever so slightly around them.
‘The world’s most powerful robot is no more a challenge than crabmeat. Even the Doctor’s most daring designs can’t compete with my power… It is without peer,’ the figure chuckles to themselves.
Shadow starts approaching silently, analysing the situation. Despite this being Omega’s location, he can’t see the robot.
‘Wonder how easy it would be to end this entire planet. Don’t you…’
Suddenly, the voice speaks close to the hedgehog’s ear:
‘…Shadow?’
He turns around to see that the unknown person has appeared behind him, which throws him off. The hedgehog takes several steps back and puts himself in a fighting stance.
It’s hard to see past the jackal’s mask, but he seems amused as he looks down on Shadow. Twistedly so.
‘How wonderful to see that our not-so-tall, dark and brooding guest has arrived. I’ve been waiting for you, Shadow~’
‘Tell me what you did to Omega. Now,’ the agent demands.
‘Oh, come now, Shadow. Our long-awaited reunion and still you spout such nonsense.’ Infinite floats down to stand a few meters away from his enemy.
‘I don’t know you,’ Shadow states. The masked jackal tilts his head, but doesn’t say anything, so he asks again, ‘what have you done to Omega?’
‘Only what is ought to be done when someone stands in your way. Weaklings like E-123 Omega are of no consequence, don’t you agree?’
‘The only thing of no consequence is that big mouth of yours.’
Shadow launches himself at Infinite, who easily avoids his attack. The jackal starts laughing manically.
‘Ah, I suppose you would think so,’ he states. ‘After all, it’s not so funny to be the one losing the battle, is it? I am Infinite. You say you do not know me, and yet I remember you so very well… I’ve lost all I was, I’ve become what I am because of you. Savour that thought as I return the favour.’
Guess what happens? That’s right, we get another boss battle! I think it’s only fair that Infinite gets to have his rematch with Shadow. Besides, it establishes a comparison with the “old” Infinite and how much stronger he’s now – from Shadow’s perspective, that is.
I have no idea how this battle would play out. Maybe something similar to his second battle in the main story (no, don’t worry: we’ll talk about the exceeding amount of Infinite battles in the next part), with the 2D layout. Let’s say Infinite is surrounded with his Red Cubes of Doom while he’s not attacking, so you can’t touch him. Maybe he makes the fire glitch and get closer to you at some point. Maybe he makes clones and you have to defeat each of them to get to the real guy, I don’t know! Tag your ideas, I’d love to see them! ^^
Anyway, once the battle’s over and Shadow “wins” (because Infinite is not defeated, he’s just done with this fight), the jackal might say something in the lines of “I suppose I’ve let this duel go on for long enough. I have other matters to attend to, Shadow the Hedgehog.”
We get back to the cutscene and Infinite is glitching a bit, quickly recomposing himself, laughing. Shadow is panting.
‘What’s the matter, Shadow? Can’t take down a measly jackal anymore?’ The masked one says sarcastically. ‘It seems like I’ve overestimated your strength. You’re no fit to be a mercenary at all.’
There’s a beat and Shadow realises what this is about. He looks at Infinite, frowning. ‘It’s you… Defence Squad Jackal…’
Infinite stares at the hedgehog. He doesn’t seem to be as amused anymore. His golden eye’s glowing under his mask, and so is the Phantom Ruby on his chest. A tense background music plays as Infinite answers dryly:
‘Yes.’
‘I’ve spared you, but now you’re going too far. It’s time to finish this! Chaos Spear!’
The spears of light simply go through Infinite as if they didn’t exist. Shadow goes for a spin dash/homing attack/kick to the face or whatever you can think of, but the masked villain glitches out of the way with ease and lands an almost perfect copy of Shadow’s roundhouse kick.
The hedgehog glides across the floor, almost falling over. Infinite scoffs.
‘This new “me” has limitless power. I have no mercy; no weakness! I am the true ultimate force that will tear this world apart, and what may have worked to bring me down before…’ the jackal starts floating again; thousands of red cubes start dancing around him and, as he raises a hand, they all group in the sky not far above them. ‘… No longer does.’
(Why yes, this is a reference to Mephiles the Dark and that time he destroyed the Sceptre of Darkness!)
Infinite throws his “Take THIS!” and Shadow does the “!” – which is him frantically trying to get out of the way as the thousands cubes of doom come crashing down on him.
The screen goes black.
Scene ends.
The Virtual Reality level should play as usual from there. I don’t even want to change the background dialogue, because I really like it: it’s confusing, it’s weird, it’s unsettling and it slaps Shadow in the face in a way that we rarely see. I love it! (Although, I do think the gameplay should have a tiny little bit more of 3D parts. We love Green Hill, but we also love the freedom to move on more than two directions when playing as the Ultimate Life Form. But it’s cool)
After that, we could get another cutscene (we’re full of cutscenes, huh? Well, this is a hypothetical rewriting with a hypothetical budget. Also, Episode Shadow is more of an exposition episode anyway). In this cutscene, we would start with some shots of different known locations: Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Crisis City, Mystic Jungle, Kingdom Valley, Babylon Garden, you name it! And all of these places are somewhat “corrupted”; they’re glitching out, full of those red cubes, and there’s just this ominous atmosphere in them, as if they’re abandoned, desolated despite looking roughly the same as ever. We then see a black-and-red blur cross the screen, and a short narration takes place:
“I’ve been here for longer than I can remember. This… alternate reality, this fake world. There seems to be no escape. Rouge and Omega talk to me occasionally…”
We see Shadow leaning against a wall. His communicator plays only white noise, then Rouge’s voice comes in; it’s strangely echoed as it calls out to him. Shadow throws the device far away and sighs.
“… They’re fake too. No matter where I go, no matter how much I run…”
Shadow is skating through Pumpkin Hill or something, when the world suddenly starts to glitch out massively; we hear the Phantom Ruby’s noise and suddenly, we’re on the ARK.
“It’s like this place was made to torture me. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case.”
‘I’ve moved on from this a long time ago,’ Shadow says to the void of the Universe as we hear gunshots in the distance. He’s not being completely truthful. ‘Putting me through this scenario dozens of times changes nothing. Don’t you have anything more creative at this point?’
There’s silence, except for the shouts in the Space Colony. A voice calls out to Shadow, and he promptly ignores it, albeit with a pained look in his eyes. He’s visibly tired, almost hopeless, if one could ever describe Shadow the Hedgehog that way.
He sighs.
‘Alright, how do I get out of this one?”
We then get a start of a short level in the ARK. Don’t worry, it’s not one of those hellish mazes that usually haunt every ARK level there ever was; this is more straight forward, with doors closing all around you so that you know where you shouldn’t go, and some G.U.N. robots trying to kill you, simple thing.
The catch happens when you’re halfway through the level: as you’re crossing a long corridor, the game begins to “crash” – in the sense of you losing control of the character, the visuals beginning to glitch and the soundtrack going weird, all in a way that makes the soul leave the body of the player for a terrifying four seconds of “HOLY SHIT, I BROKE THE GAME”. But nope, you didn’t break the game: the Phantom Ruby is trolling you. We soon find that out as the signature noise plays and the glitching effect on screen disperses to show a new scenario: Mystic Jungle. The real Mystic Jungle. Congratulations: you get to play in a totally different zone for the rest of the level.
‘My head…’ Shadow murmurs to himself. ‘That was too quick; this can’t be right, it- ugh, why is it so bright here? Where are all the red things? This place seems too normal… is it… am I back in the real world?!’
We then finish the level, get our nice score and head to the last scene of the episode.
Shadow is going through the jungle, taking in everything that isn’t an illusion. He passes by a red sword stuck to the ground and leans against a tree, still a little out of it, still struggling to believe that anything is real anymore. The hedgehog then takes his communicator – surprisingly intact; hadn’t he thrown that away? – and tries to make contact. There is static for a moment, when suddenly…
‘Shadow? Oh my- Shadow, is that you?!’
He’s startled for a moment, but so relieved to hear Rouge’s normal voice again.
‘It’s me, Rouge. What’s the situation? Where’s Omega?’
‘Omega? We lost contact with him months ago; the Resistance says he must have been shut down after the Doctor took over!’
Shadow raises both his non-existing eyebrows in surprise, barely holding a gasp. He then frowns.
‘Shut down? Resistance? What do you mean “the Doctor took over”? What the heck happened?’
‘What happened? What happened?! I should be the one asking you that! You’ve been offline for six months! Everyone keeps saying you’re working with Eggman and Infinite, and I couldn’t contact you or Omega, I thought… I thought we’d lost you for good…’
‘Nonsense,’ Shadow states. We start hearing voices in the distance, and the hedgehog starts looking around while still talking ‘I’ll tell you the details later, it’s long story. What’s the current situation?’
‘Shadow…’
The (Tired) Ultimate Life Form spots something from behind the trees. Still in hiding, he looks closer only to see the Custom Hero holding the prototype Phantom Ruby they just found and talking to Tails and… Classic Sonic, much to Shadow’s confusion.
‘… We’re at war.’
Shadow takes a moment to process what’s just been said. He doesn’t even pay attention to what Rouge says next (neither do we, as the background music starts getting louder than the bat’s voice). He still watches the avatar, Tails and Classic Sonic as they leave; he focuses on the Phantom Ruby.
‘Meet me in the City. I’ve got a lot to tell you,’ Shadow says.
And with that, he leaves, the scene fades out and Episode Shadow is over!
*”The Light of Hope: Menu Version” plays in the background*
Now, a few more analytical notes before we close this ridiculously gigantic thing:
The immediate reason why we have Shadow being stuck in the Virtual Reality for six months is to indicate to us why he doesn’t show up earlier in the main game. It’s not like he was being useless this whole time and just decided to show up whenever it was most Ex-Machina of him; much like Sonic, he was trapped by the enemy. A mental trap that put Shadow on survivor mode for months without any way of communicating with anybody; with twisted versions of his friends trying to get to him and remind him that, hey, they’re still out there, probably in high danger; with these illusions mocking him, reminding him of painful memories, isolating him in familiar places… I say: if you want to emotionally hit a character, hit them hard. And this experience is bound to leave Shadow with some emotional scar, alright.
(Ever heard of conveniently coming out of nowhere?)
Shadow is bound to lose his sense of reality and sometimes it should be hard for him to acknowledge that this is the real world. I hope I can showcase some of his reactions in the later parts of this o3o
The Virtual Reality isn’t all glitchy by mistake. No, no: Infinite is perfectly capable of making a “perfect copy” of the real world, but he doesn’t want to. He wants Shadow to know this is a fake world and to know that he’s completely trapped in it while his real friends and allies are out there doing who-knows-what in a world run by the enemy. He wants to throw Shadow off-balance as much as he can, because he’s spiteful and doesn’t just leave the hedgehog to the side without a second glance.
In the game, Infinite says that they didn’t really have time to tune his power yet, so we can tell putting Shadow in the Virtual Reality was more of a practice of sorts. But man, I think this is too much of a cool concept, so I’ll say Infinite did put his power to the test before all of this; because Eggman, sir: you don’t simply throw your super-secret, amazing, unparalleled weapon in the battlefield without testing it first. This is something that can be inferred, it doesn’t need to be directly told, it just- I’m telling you this right now, ok?
I know Shadow is supposedly “over” this conflict with what happened in the ARK and it probably feels over-used to add it in again, but… it’s a thing the games haven’t tackled in such a long time, I feel like this would be a nice call-back. Besides, Infinite would want to know what would bring distress to Shadow; what happened in the ARK isn’t exactly a secret, especially if he’s working with Eggman. And Shadow can be as “over it” as he wants: it’s still a scar that will never truly leave him. Even if he watches it happen dozens of times, it’s still at least a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster.
ALTHOUGH! I also think this ARK level could be easily replaced with some other random level if you want to argue that Forces happens in Mobius or something, where Gerald and Maria and G.U.N. maybe never existed and whatnot.
What brought Shadow back, you ask? Well, it probably has to do with a certain someone spontaneously activating a Phantom Ruby. Maybe the avatar was thinking of Shadow and how it’d be nice to have him on their side again? Maybe they were thinking of undoing Infinite’s evil deeds? Maybe the raw power of the Phantom Ruby prototype being suddenly activated by the Custom Hero just crashed something another Phantom Ruby user did, like magnetic waves interfering with each other? Who knows?
I also find it important to show the Custom Hero here not only to show that there’s a connection between Shadow’s sudden freedom and their actions, but also to establish the tiniest amount of early familiarity between Shadow and the original character. Then maybe (maybe) I’ll give them a bit more of interaction in the main game, because it’d be nice to have a cool interaction with Shadow; and as endearing as his smile after the avatar does their thing with the sun of destruction is, it feels like it comes out of nowhere, if you think about it…
(I mean... Does he even know who we are?)
Infinite’s sword stuck to the ground goes completely over Shadow’s head, as he has no idea what that is or who it belonged to or what it means. It’s really just there for the viewer to reminisce the beginning of the episode and have a slight existential crisis.
When playing the main campaign, we get some pretty convenient information from Shadow once he finally shows up. Episode Shadow should give us a sense of how he knows those things. Want it or not, he did spend a long time studying the Phantom Ruby’s power far more closely than anybody else – well, maybe Sonic spent almost as much time as Shadow in a similar state, but that’s something to cover in another part.
The fact that Shadow is the one narrating this entire episode is supposed to allude to him telling Rouge exactly what happened during those six months he was gone. But if you want to read it as him talking to himself in the Virtual Reality as he slowly descends into madness, then be my guest!
I don’t know if it’s noticeable, but I’ve tried to tune Infinite’s cheesiness down a bit. I don’t think I can rid him of it entirely – after all, he is somewhat of a pompous, edgy, over-the-top character in general; he’s a full-on drama queen 24/7 and the only character cheesier than him is Sonic. Now, what we do with Infinite is to at least give a base to what he says. Also, I wanted him to sound a bit more like he lets the power get to his head. Oh well, I surely hope we’ll be tackling more of Infinite in the future!
Episode Shadow is extremely short, even for a DLC. I mean, it’s about only 20 minutes long – even less, if you’re good at it! With the addition of the cutscenes, the small changes, the boss fights against Squad Jackal and Infinite, and the added levels, the episode shouldn’t get overwhelmingly longer, but longer enough for it to feel more satisfying!
And with that, we’re done! I hope you enjoyed this massive thing. Despite me really liking Sonic Forces, I do think a few things could be improved. It’s not like it will happen, but rewriting is a lot of fun!
And why, no: I don’t take myself seriously.

Sonic Forces Thoughts
The title may seem a bit strange, given that the game is 3 years old already, and I’ve given my thoughts on the story plenty of times before as well as shared those of others, but I wanted to make this post because I decided to actually sit down and play Sonic Forces front to back for the first time since the game was on sale on the Nintendo Switch Eshop for a stupidly cheap price (10 dollars as of the time of this post)
Now that I’ve actually beaten the game and seen pretty much all the game has to offer (outside of Episode Shadow), I might as well give my thoughts on it.
On the whole, the best way to describe Sonic Forces is “mediocre”, because almost everything about it is just mediocre. The story, the music (which kills me to say), the level design, everything about the game just reeks of unfiltered mediocrity. It’s not terrible, but it’s not good either, it’s just kinda....there.
Now I could leave it there but I actually want to go into detail, so I’ll break it down into a couple of sections to get my thoughts out in an organized way under the readmore, starting with
STORY: As I said at the start of the post, I’ve said my piece about the story many times over and agreed with the thoughts of others on that matter, so I’ll keep this quick.
The story feels incredibly undercooked and doesn’t even come close to fulfilling its potential, especially when it comes to Infinite. Holy shit I could spend 2 hours ranting about how much wasted potential this fucking character is on a story and gameplay level but at this point it’s beating a dead horse.
The characters and their characterization is generally fine (except Tails holy shit what did they do to you) but like Infinite, they feel grossly underutilized and feel like they’re there for the sake of it rather than because they contribute anything of meaning.
I don’t have much else to say other than that the story shares a common problem with the rest of the game in that it is very short. Like, I got Forces yesterday and I beat it in the span of what? 5 or 6 hours? As such, the story feels incredibly rushed because of that. This segues into my next topic
Gameplay: This is a bit of a broad topic but I’ll break it down into something manageable, going from general to specific
Difficulty: Starting with difficulty, Forces is, for the most part, an incredibly easy game. The game defaults to the “hard” difficulty but it should really be called “normal” because nothing in this game will give you too much trouble (at least for reasons of actual difficulty). The boss fights, especially the final one, are pitifully easy and simplistic, especially if you use the Burst Wisp. Seriously, that thing destroys all the Avatar bosses with no issue. As such, the incredibly low difficulty makes the games’ length that much more noticeable, which speaking of
Length: The game, as I’ve said before, is incredibly short. I beat it in 5-6 hours but you could easily beat it in around 3 or 4. There’s 30 stages plus the Episode Shadow stuff and some bonus stages you unlock with Red Rings, but almost all of them are laughably short, the longest of them clocking in at around 4 or 5 minutes and the shortest being barely a minute and a half (the bonus stages are ~45 seconds long). The only time I spent more than 5 minutes in a level is if I repeatedly died on a certain part, which happened only once or twice and for reasons I will get into. It somehow feels shorter than Mania, a game that was sold for half the price initially and has less levels.
Controls: Next up is the controls and holy shit this is where the bulk of my complaints lie. I don’t know how, but Classic and Modern Sonic control noticeably worse than they did in Generations or pretty much any other Classic or Boost game.
Classic Sonic feels incredibly heavy, making each platforming section feel less I’m controlling Sonic the Hedgehog and more like I’m controlling an immobile brick. That’s not even getting into how badly they fucked up his physics. The fact that this came out months after Mania is laughable.
Modern Sonic on the other hand, feels way too loose. Whether it be in 3D or 2D, I feel like I’m barely in control of him when I start to gain speed, and there’s been multiple times where I careened off a cliff despite steering him away from it. It’s made even worse by the fact that for some fucking reason, they took away the drift, something that’s been in I think every 3D boost game since Unleashed.
They also gave Modern a double jump, but the double jump is so worthless and heavy that it’s gotten me killed more times than it’s actually helped me. It feels so stiff and awkward to use and combined with Modern’s loose controls, most of my deaths in this game came from Modern deciding to just randomly plummet into a pit because I couldn’t correct a jump or he just slid off the edge of a runway for no good reason. Stage 27 is the best example of what I’m talking about because holy shit.
Finally there’ the Avatar, and he probably controls the best of the three, so I don’t have too many complaints on that end other than the fact that his jumps are incredibly slow and floaty.
Level design: As I said before, most levels are incredibly short, being over pretty much as soon as they begin. The design in the levels themselves is at best momentarily interesting (The 2nd Modern level for instance), and at worst is absolutely atrocious and terrible (Whoever decided to put an autoscroller in a Sonic level is just awful). and most of the time it just evens out to being incredibly boring and forgettable. This isn’t helped by the fact that most of the levels themselves are either throwbacks to previous games, generic cityscapes covered in white or on fire, or that ugly, ugly jungle aesthetic. There’s no levels in this game that really wowed me aesthetically or on a gameplay level. Hell, I can barely remember the names of most of the levels
Music: The music in this game ranges from forgettable (most of the Modern tracks) to skullfuckingly awful (Every. Single. Classic. Song). Though that being said, I did like a couple of the Avatar themes, and the vocal tracks (Fist Bump, Infinite’s Theme, Light of Hope) were all pretty decent, though not nearly on the same level as prior games. This is probably the most forgettable soundtrack in all of 3D Sonic. Even Lost World had more memorable and interesting tracks than this.
Avatar: I already talked about my grievances and thoughts on Modern and Classic in the control section, but I wanted to give the Avatar his own section because it’s easily the best part of the game. Getting new gear for your Avatar and customizing them is admittedly really fun, and I had a good time making my new OC Kick the Dog (do not steal). The Wispons give a decent amount of variety and replayability to the levels that the other playstyles don’t have (Red Rings do dick in this game other than unlock clothes and EX levels which are so insignificant they ain’t worth it) and their levels are easily the most fleshed out and interesting of the bunch. If I ever come back to Forces, it’ll probably be to replay Avatar levels
Content: This game has barebones content, with the most pressing things outside of the main levels being Episode Shadow (which is 3 stages long), the bonus levels (pitifully short), the SOS missions (replay the levels again), and collecting the red rings/ silver moons/ whatever (Only unlocks more clothes and bad bonus levels). Compared to something like Generations, which was also pretty short but had a lot of side content and unlockables that made it worth coming back to, and something like Mania which is packed to the brim with content and replayability, Forces is just kind of pathetic.
Graphics: One thing I’ll give the game is that the pre-rendered cutscenes and even some of the real time cutscenes look really damn good, at least aesthetically. Character animations still leave a lot to be desired though. The in-game graphics look fine. Nothing great but not terrible. Keep in mind I played it on Switch so that could easily affect things, but generally the game looked....okay.
FINAL THOUGHTS: As I said before, Sonic Forces is the definition of “mediocre”. It’s a completely unremarkable game from start to finish, and most of what it does is done better by just about any other competent 2D or 3D Sonic game. The Avatar is fun and interesting and I want the playstyle to make a return, but that isn’t enough to save the game from being incredibly mediocre and just plain forgettable.
If you really want to try Forces out yourself, I’d recommend getting it at a deep, deep discount. I got it at around 10 dollars and I’d say it’s worth between 10 and 20 dollars. Do not pay full price for this game.
But otherwise, just skip it.

Ranking the Sonic Forces’ Avatar songs
Well, I blasted Classic Sonic’s music not too long ago, so I feel like I should write something positive about Forces for a change, and what better thing to write about than the Avatar songs, arguably the thing that carried the game the most for me.
Rules:
Tag Team songs aren’t included (Arsenal Pyramid would be OP otherwise)
Only level themes (I’m sorry final boss phase 2 and Infinite 2)
You can’t just listen to these songs without dancing and/or giving your blessings towards Tomoya Ohtani.
Alright ballbots, let’s roll:
7. Nowhere to Run
Now I’m starting to realize how the song literally says “All of my anxiety // Now is taking control of me // I’m holding onto every little bit of hope...” holy shit.
(Nowhere to Run except the dancefloor, amirite? That base is so sick)
6. Virtual Enemies
Knuckles didn’t brief us on the part of his plan that involved bringing such banger to one of the most entertaining levels of the game (albeit just for the spectacle).
Also, another example of the fitting lyrics of this game: “Nothing's real it's all a game // We will win, make no mistake // You must trust your heart, not what you see”
(gimme more of that shit in future games, I’m serious)
5. Justice
Remember that old Park Avenue gameplay trailer that had like 2 seconds of the “destinyyyy” part? Holy shit I almost passed out that day, it was so unreal hearing lyrics again on a mainline Sonic game.
The first Avatar song we knew of, probably the best banger to introduce someone to this game.
4. Fading World
Even if you hate this song, you sing the first verse with all your might. Don’t you lie to me. I’ve seen y’all reblogging my video.
I mean, what can I say? Such complex metaphorical lyrics lie within the “The sun is falling in the sky beyond // And light is fading from our world”. It’s like dancing in the club while you reflect on the fragility of life, won’t tell you how much it happened to me.
One last time, please: THE SUN IS FALLING IN THE SKY BEYOND AND LIGHT IS FADING FROM OUR WORLD NOW’S THE TIME OF RECKONING THE FINAL BATTLE HAS BEGUN
3. Set in Motion
How to avoid paying loyalties to Masato Nakamura:
Craft an absolute, top-tier banger
Do NOT use the original Green Hill Zone theme for a GHZ-based level (very important)
Make a subtle yet noticeable nod to Green Hill Zone’s theme
Add some positive-feeling lyrics that can be used as memes
???
Profit, people will talk more about the lyrics than the music
Beautiful masterpiece...
(fuck that level with that cheap, blind bottomless pit though.)
2. Fighting Onward
You know how proud they were with the Avatar music when the first level fires on all cylinders like this. Holy hell, the use of the Fist Bump motive, the lyrics (dat nod to the credits theme too), the general ambientation and the fact this is actually the first good level of the game (we don’t talk about that other first level here).
Also: IN THE DISTANCE I SEE THE LIGHT OF HOPEEE SHIIINIIING
CAN’T GIVE IN OR WE’LL LOSE IT ALL
Exquisit.
1. Moonlight Battlefield
A wise philosopher once said:
“Aqua Road best road”
-Latin Dr. Robotnik, 2019
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Well I do, but it’s not like I fall in love with the first person I see on the street (or do I? ah, haha... ha...)
I mean, this song was love at first sight, the sight of seeing the official Sonic channel uploading a small demo of this beautiful thing.
The actual level is also such a sight to behold, it can be infuriatingly short or cheap, yes, but it’s sooooooooooooo beautifuuuuuuuul.
So... what do you think of the avatar songs?
If you have a friend that doesn’t like any of these songs, it is your obligation to convert them to our loving cult by any means necessary.
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic music#sonic forces#yes like half of this post is jokes and more jokes#but the list is genuine i swear#i was bored the other day and wanted to talk about something that always pumps me up#so... here it is#also yes i made a sonic boom joke#my fav one on that note

What do you think on Sonic Forces in general? What are your pros and cons about it?
I have a mixed feelings on it! It’s kinda hard to put it into words how I feel about it but I’ll try my best. I think it had the potential to be something amazing, but it mostly turned out mediocre. I definitely don’t understand why some acted like it was a terrible game, cause for me, it was just painfully meh at worst. Then again, Famous YouTube People will always leap at the chance to make a “Haha Sonic Bad look at the funny meme” video whenever they can.
Main thing that let me down was the potential it had as a story. It’s like they were trying to tell an epic story where Eggman actually wins, and they do but… it doesn’t go anywhere? Sonic doesn’t seem fazed by it at all for the most part, so there’s no character growth or surprising, heartfelt moment. If Sonic, our main character, doesn’t act as if the situation is super serious/not a typical Eggman scheme, then how can the viewer or player? Of course I want Sonic to be sassy and full of optimism and determination, but he doesn’t really have an “emotional low” moment that makes the final pay-off feel awesome. Which I think is important in a story like this. Tails was poorly written, straight-up. The whole “I can do this by myself” development he had in the Adventure games? Out the window.
They hyped up Infinite as this super cool new villain, and while he has a fantastic design and theme song, he has no meaningful backstory or personality to speak of in my opinion. He just kind of strikes me as an evil for the sake of it character. Classic Sonic’s inclusion in both story and gameplay is the worst part of the game. It was not only unnecessary story-wise, but his stages are easily the least fun to play. For some reason, his stages just weren’t as good as they were in Generations for me. The avatar was fun concept! I wish there were more species options and customization in the looks department (besides the clothes) but that’s just nitpicking. Modern Sonic was enjoyable… just too linear and automated. Music’s good for the most part, except Classic’s stages lool. I can tell they were trying to capture the Genesis sound but it falls flat. Also, the game is way too short! The game can be beaten in two hours max if you’ve played a Sonic game before! Ughh, it’s sucks because you can tell it had potential! Null Space’s presentation and gameplay was easily the best part of the game. It got me in the feels with Fist Bump playing in the background, and it was a blast to play through!
Speaking of feels, that reminds me, Light Of Hope was such a beautiful song, but then I remember, nothing in the game story-wise really happens to warrant such a dramatic song/pay-off. Nothing really bittersweet happens to me, which is the vibe I get from the song. Which goes back to what I was saying about Sonic himself. Okay, sorry, that was a loooot.
