So I couldn't stop thinking about this post and had some thoughts, and then went "What's the harm in sharing them?" so. Anyway.
The thing about MCU Stephen is that the whole movie focuses on his character development where he learns that everything is not about him, as TAO puts it. We were shown that he learns to 'overcome' his arrogance and lets go of his pride, which is often confused as him being 'selfish' by some fans. Which, well, fair, they're similar, but they don't mean the same thing.
Stephen uses ego as a mask. Arrogance is his facade. He disguises his true intentions using pride--or maybe people just don't understand/misinterpret or only see that his reasons and motives were for himself and his personal needs--as a defense mechanism.
The thing about Stephen is that he hides his true self, in fear that people will see him for who he is and mistake his big heart as a flaw (I'm not an expert, but I do think this has ties with the environment he grew up in and his childhood with how his father treated him). Another thing is that, other than seeing himself as flawed, he also thinks himself as unlovable.
Stephen hates vulnerability. He doesn't want people to see him beyond the arrogant front he puts up.
I like to think that, somewhere in his years growing up, Stephen lost his true self. I like to think that he forgot that the reason he became a doctor was because he wanted to help people. I like to think that way, not because I think Stephen is so blinded by his selfishness, but because he's put up such strong walls and such a thick mask that he forgot his true self.
The lesson TAO was teaching him was not to humble him or make him realise how much of a selfish prick he is, but to remind him of who he actually is. Stephen is inherently good. He has such a big heart but doesn't really know what to do with it. It's in his nature to care about people. He's selfless and prioritises others before himself but people don't see that beyond what he shows himself to be.
Another unfortunately popular interpretation is that people think he's aloof, cold, and just generally an asshole. Which in reality isn't completely true.
He's just afraid. He just distances himself from people because of that fear. He fears of being pushed away, so he pushes people away from himself. He's afraid of hurting others, so he pushes people away to make sure he won't. Stephen thinks he's better off alone, not because he wants to be alone, but because he thinks it's so much better that way. That's why he's afraid of loving and being loved.
Listen, I'm not saying he's flawless. He has his own flaws because he's human, and I know that. What I'm saying is that there's so much more to his character than the stereotypical, two-dimensional 'arrogant asshole who learns his lesson by being humbled'. I call his character complex for a reason.
The fandom perception (largely thanks to the MCU) that Stephen needs to be humbled, put in his place, or taken down a peg is SO FRUSTRATING and unfortunately SO POPULAR. 😩
They don't know... They don't know Stephen is sweet and altruistic and passionate and...

schizospec culture is constantly saying the wrong word & replacing words you intend to say with different words that sound similar but mean something totally different, and not realising until someone points it out or you reread it later because it makes perfect sense to you in the moment
(not totally sure if this is schizospec but it showed up when my disorder started and gets worse when symptoms are worse idk)

your ocs!!!!! please ramble about them!!!!
i love your art so much
(GRABS YOU) H. CAN DO BOSS.
So ! My ocs. I guess I'll do an overall explainer for the overall groups. If you check out my Toyhouse (LINK!) there's a bunch of folders up top that are how I categorise them. It's primarily by universe except for the folders that are just "misc."
So folder 1: Blatant favouritism:
These are silly little guys that don't fit in any specific wider universe, but I really really like. So I'll spotlight the two important ones before i get real in the weeds with my main universe.
In here are notably, my Fursona (self explanatory), Ali and Pittsburgh Cincinnati. There's also Hauntkit and Clearpelt who are warriorcats ocs that *is dragged away by airport security*
... So, Pittsburgh, lovingly sometimes called pissbug, is a weird little Thing who I made as like, an homage to characters like happy bunny and Sweetypuss. She (and her weird dog) exist to stand next to strange and offputting captions. I love her. No further context. She's just silly. and violent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now. Ali.
Ali Alighieri has thoroughly stolen the show, and also ties into the next folder along, Making Your MK.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With over a hundred extra images compared to second place (Sorry, Tabitha). Ali is my fucked up little scrunkly. My little baby guy. They're a shared character of mine and @samhainian's, and is from their Creature Feature setting (A modern fantasy setting wherein Cryptids and Magic are real but in our modern world.) They are as such, a modern human young adult... Who is also a demon + magic user.
Strange little pansexual altersex genderqueer poetry-nerd that they are... The modern setting also means they are literally just a tumblr user. A fellow countryman, so to speak.
HOWEVER.... Ali's true origin was in *Purrgatorio*, a scrapped visual novel of mine set in the MYMK universe! They were simply retrofitted into CF as the joke with Purrgatorio was that a regular human had mysteriously just shown up in MYMK's pure-furry setting.... And then when we scrapped the project we got all attatched to our little not-so-blank-slate protagonist. But I'll put a pin in Purrgatorio for later.
Tumblr media
Making Your MK.
(Guest of honour: My super unfinished website <3)
Okay so here's the big one. The setting with.... (looks at spreadsheet) 109 characters not including so-called incidentals. At time of writing.
MYMK is home to... Multiple stories. As you would hope when a setting has 100+ characters. I'd wager each story has about 10-20 relevant characters tops but with a big shared universe like this there gets to be overlap between casts!!! Yay !!! 😊😊😊
MYMK is the name of the main story in the setting. Pronounced "Making your Mark", it is centered around Markus Felidae (The purple one) and their family. It's very action-adventure-y. It's also the plot I'm most secretive about the backend of since I WILL!!!!! Turn it into a nice prose story with pictures SOMEDAY!!!!! But for now tee hee hee secrets secrets. Markus' family is strange and ragtag and is keeping something from them... I can't ramble on too long here unless further prompted in asks about specifics but!!! Everyone in the MYMK folder has a fully furbished little profile with a blurb about them. So if you're curious....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah, I tend to think of the MYMK setting more in terms of its Locations than its Casts, due to the overlapping nature of them all. The Malbranche may be the villains of the main plot, but they're also major players in relation to The Palsgrave who are the antagonists of Moraine, etc etc,
The country everything in MYMK is set in is called New Orphidian, Southern hemisphere little thing, here's a very cartoony map of it.
Tumblr media
Um. Cliffside!
Since it's the best map I have... Here's an exclusive sneak peek of a Zine I'll be getting back to once the fandom brain cools down a bit.... :3c
Tumblr media
(... I REALLY NEED TO DO A TOUR AROUND THE MINECRAFT CLIFFSIDE SAM AND I BUILT..... IT'S SO CUTE....)
Cliffside is situated on a big ol' Cliff.
A tiny hamlet of a place, it used to have reason to exist, and now does not. It's not even a good tourist locale, as the cliff is much too dangerous compared to the nicer tourist spot of Welkin just a little north. Not to mention nearby Moraine's allure as a tax haven with no labour laws place where a bunch of TV and Movies are filmed!
It's where most of MYMK's main cast reside (except the antagonists from the Big City Varmonte), and is as such a location I have a lot of tiny little worldbuilding thoughts about :)
Tumblr media
I won't go into the other locations here just because then this post will SUPER get away from me but... I think most importantly for Cliffside right now...
Is that it's where Purrgatorio is set. Yes, that VN I said got scrapped. It's not dead. It is in fact serving it's original intended purpose as "A (mostly) noncanon exploration of character voice and setting"
It's back and its prose babeyyyyyyy!!! (A BUNCH OF THE EARLY STUFF IS ME BEING SUPER RUSTY ... BE WARNED)
Purrgatorio is currently the most publicly available coherent work I have out of my ocs! It's very low-stakes and serves mostly to bash my toys together and see what character dynamics come out, but you can look if you want to!
(There's also a whole THING on the meta of its Canonicity... It's not canon, but it's also not NOT canon. But if I talk about Metanarrative Timeline Collapse in my normal mundane non-magic setting im gonna sound bonkers ✌)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ali's dynamics with the MYMK cast are so goddamn funny to me. Like I literally just handed my OCs some ET shit but ET is a sexually repressed tumblr user with a mood disorder.
But yeah I don't think I can coherently string together much more about MYMK without just actually explaining THE WHOLE PLOT.... Though I will absolutely elaborate on any given character's Whole Deal if i'm prompted. (OH MY GOD I DIDNT EVEN TALK ABOUT CHROME AND TABITHA. WAIT. OKAY THERE'S. OK NO IF I TALKED ABOUT THEM IT'D JUST END UP AN ESSAY ,SORRY..)
So here's some bonafide classic images for the road.
(IF TUMBLR BREAKS THE FORMATTING AND JUST PUTS THESE ONE AFTER THE OTHER INSTEAD OF IN A GRID IM SO SORRY LMAOOOOO)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... And as for the other folders on my toyhouse!
Misc and Fandom are what they sound like. Self explanatory,
Then, Ysden is @samhainian's fantasy setting. It's where our DnD games happen to be set but it's also a general fantasy setting :)
and Monster of the Week... Is currently being revamped! It used to be a modern world setting with hidden magic, now it's going to be more... Adventure Time-y. Fantasy world get iphone. Yknow. It has a lower Age Rating than MYMK's "anything goes", as it started as a Pitch Bible Project in my animation class. They're a little neglected but I still love them :) The revamp is extemely recent and not reflected in any of the art/writing yet but I'm workin on it. It still doesn't have a proper title..... OTL
So yeah!! Uh. This wasn't as comprehensive as I was hoping but it turns out I have way, WAY too many thoughts on my guys. And no idea what to do when im actually asked about them so !!!! This was not a very coherent ramble but it was a ramble !
There's things like essays on Chrome and Tabitha (Link) and also The Queer Gender Identities Of The Whole Cast (Link) hiding around on my toyhouse, and once again, Purrgatorio (Link) serves as my sandbox for playing with how these characters act in situations.
But..... ! I did try to make my toyhouse approachable for the average layman. Every character in the MYMK folder (Link) has a *blurb* of information, rather than a giant wall of text explaining everything about them. I want people to be able to understand their general vibe at a glance rather than be overwhelmed.
In any case ???? Uh. Fun game for everyone: If you know your homestuck classpect, every single MYMK character has a classpect and lunar sway. and a birthday. Try and find your andrew-hussie assigned kin! As a Prospitian Witch of Heart, I share my classpect and lunar sway with Chrome. No I don't know what this means. It worries me honestly he's kind of an asshole.

Thoughts on the lore
After reading some of the Touchstarved fandom’s headcanons and in-depth analysis( y’all make really good points ngl) I wanted to dump these long thoughts out:
The founding of Senobium and Kuras:
I think shortly after Kuras was being exiled from the heavens and came to Eridia. He met a few scholarly mortals that initially shared the same ideals and beliefs with himself. With that being said, Kuras opened up and  has shared lots of things about himself / the forbidden knowledge and all of them decided to establish the Senobium together.
But the characteristics of human nature runs deep among mortals, which caused a difference between Kuras’ and those co-founders of Senobium, resulting in a severe conflict and lead to their betrayal to Kuras. Yet, since they hold so much information, they have the advantage of using them to (sort of-) threaten/ blackmail Kuras for something ( and that potentially explains why Kuras became less open to others in the game) so he would still have to work for the senobium.
The origin of word Senobium:
I did some research and found out there’s a similar word to Senobium, which is Cenobium ( source from google):
cenobium
/səˈnəʊbɪəm/
noun
noun: cenobium; plural noun: cenobia; noun: coenobium; plural noun: coenobia
a monastery."many pilgrims flocked to the cenobium in search of the monk"
in the game, Senobium is known by MC for people flocking there to in search of knowledge, hence there should be a correlation between the background of senobium and Cenobium’s word meaning - where the place Senobium is derived and inspired by the word "Cenobium".
Extension from previous thoughts:
I recall reading a post from a Tumblr user that briefly mentioned the Abbess from Vere’s route, suggesting that it could be linked to the senobium. The word abbess (from google again) means:
a woman who is the head of an abbey of nuns."she's the abbess of the Abbey, the Mother Superior to twenty-three nuns"
Based on the original word meaning of Cenobium - a monastery, and the Abbess meaning the head nun that oversees the rest of the party. Could she be linked to Kuras or authoritative figures that founded the senobium, did she do something that makes Eridia the place it is now? Bc to me, I believe the words and their meaning behind are chosen accordingly to the lore.

I don't know anything about England but I'm interested in how the characters' locations inform their characters like Seward's. I'd like to know more about the implications of being from Purfleet/Essex for example (Though iirc Stoker immigrated from Dublin well into adulthood so I don't know how well he knew all the cities.)
there's so much to be said! i really don't think that stoker meant much intentionally, but the placement of the asylum in purfleet specifically is interesting.
long post so i'm cutting this!
the asylum at purfleet, essex, is an example of the common 19th-early 20th century phenomenon of establishing psychiactric hospitals in the rural counties surrounding london - simultaneously serving as a 'tranquil' location away from the city, while also serving the dubious, cruel purpose of squirelling away would-be patients into residences away from the city - out of society, out of sight, out of mind.
in terms of jack seward himself, purfleet is a kind of an in-between, nothing place - things and people pass through, not much stays. (there's a reason why whitby is remembered as 'the dracula place', and not purfleet.) it's quite literally on the edge of london - of society - and in that scene where jack's looking despondently towards the sun setting west over london, his own isolation becomes palpable - from society and from the world as a whole. the endless, transient, liminal feel of the essex saltmarshes just....gives the vibe. this was a scene that felt particularly gothic to me - jack is the custodian of his very own haunted house, here, in all its bleak, isolated glory.
It was a shock to me to turn from the wonderful smoky beauty of a sunset over London, with its lurid lights and inky shadows and all the marvellous tints that come on foul clouds even as on foul water, and to realise all the grim sternness of my own cold stone building, with its wealth of breathing misery, and my own desolate heart to endure it all.
this is an fascinating parallel with the count's situation in transylvania, which is NOT the topic du jour here so i'll stop before i ramble but compelling nonetheless! like the count, though, he's a liminal figure - in london, but not quite in london. in the group, but not in the group. alive, but not really living. wide awake in the witching hour, unsure how to re-integrate with society.
it's also worth noting that the opening of dickens' great expectations has pip in his childhood home on the kent marshes - which would pretty much be the opposite bank of the thames from purfleet. in great expectations, pip's village serves a similar role - the quiet, bleak, nowhere-place directly placed against the bustling cosmopolis of london.
in terms of other characters and locations, i've written a bit before about jonathan (and mina possibly) hailing from exeter, devon, in the south west of england - which is much further from london.
jonathan and mina, in terms of the group dynamics, are outsiders: they're very much lower middle class, hyper-aware of the importance of money and societal etiquette as a means for survival and social betterment. this is a personal hc of mine, but i like to think of jonathan as having the long supressed remnants of a devon accent. south west accents are often the subject of a lot of ridicule and mockery in the UK (akin to a southern US accent) and hiding that regionalism, in both the 1890s and today's britain, would be a means of survival and progress for him - i think the fact that he's always given a standard home counties RP accent in adaptations cuts out a major aspect of his character. he's a devon boy!
in contrast to all this, lucy's hampstead residence shows her affluence. it, too, at risk of breaking my social isolation metaphor, was on the edge of london at the time - but was known more as a wealthy suburb with huge areas of greenery at hampstead heath and highgate. there's something to be said, though, about a place like highgate cemetery - a liminal place between the dead and the living, between city and country, haunted at night by a vampire - and the same could be said for purfleet.
arthur is hard to pin down - for the life of me i CANNOT work out where 'ring' is supposed to be - at first i thought it might be a shortening for ringwood, hampshire, which could work! but i just don't know. his character does scream privileged southern/home counties though, and if anyone has any followups on 'ring' and its wherabouts i would LOVE to know because this has been bugging me for ages. lmao
tl;dr, psychology and sociology as informed by place is SO fucking fascinating to me like it just. it affects so much. from the liminality of certain places lending themselves to the supernatural, to characters being mirrored by their surroundings and vice versa, to the social implications of where you call home. it's just!!! interesting!!

I like the idea that the Vox and Val teamup was after the Vox and Alastor fallout. Bc it would confirm to Alastor that he's right to hate the guy, while also opening the question of if Vox changed after getting power or had always been that way and just hid it for power.
Also because if they had eachother's backs it would prevent Alastor from, y'know, devouring either of their souls. Much to his disdain.
(kindaaa related to this?)
I actually see the vox and val teamup happening a bit before their fallout if only because the Key Event that caused their fallout was vox asking alastor to join his "team", if not val then what team did vox have for alastor to join?
it's interesting though you know, I see like so many different interpretations of when the falling out happened, like I have it so set in my mind that it happened DECADES ago a bit after vox met val, but then I see people talk about it like it was 7 years ago or see fics where velvette is already in the picture and vox and alastor are still friends. it's just wild, it reminds me that wow this is in fact still an unknown factor in the canon show.
anyways getting a bit off-track, I do like wonder about whether vox just changed and became worse as time went by or if he was always like that when he first arrived in hell, it's interesting that either possibility is viable simply cause of the standards of heaven and how characters like sir pentious can still end up in hell. did vox start out not-that-bad and was just encouraged to become worse because of hell's horrible environment? or was he that bad in life already? I mean usually in my interpretations he was already pretty bad in life just cause then I don't need to think too hard about it and also because I don't like blaming the way he is now completely on alastor like some people do but that doesn't mean the idea of him starting out not-as-bad and becoming worse over time isn't interesting. he was definitely always a capitalist though
but yeah uhh I have it in my head that their falling out happened some time after vox met val, aside from the "asked me to join his team" thing I just like the idea of there being an overlap between vox associating with alastor while also associating with val. like you KNOW this guy tried to introduce val to alastor like he's so cool and alastor is like "oh?" and then val makes a sexual comment then alastor goes "oh." and has it cemented in his mind "no. no. get him away from me" (and so started the whole "val is an alastor repellent" thing)
but I can absolutely see like the OFFICIAL voxval partnership only happening after vox and alastor's falling out. like when vox offered for alastor to join his evil polycule it was like "okay we're going to start this me you and val" and they were supposed to debut all 3 together but then alastor rejected him so he ended up just officially partnering up with val after the fact.
and I mean I'm sure with like every new thing alastor started to dislike about vox proved to him more and more that every new negative feeling towards vox was right.

(because i guess i'm not quite done talking about roberta's oprec from my last post on fiction within fiction in ak)
spoilers for roberta's oprec. i recommend reading it btw, at least in a story reader if not in-game
when the morgue worker asks her to think about how roberta herself would like to see her friend made up, they ask her about when cynthia was at her most beautiful. and roberta, going beyond appearances, finds herself thinking about cynthia at her most passionate, and cries. because no matter how good a job she does, no matter how well-constructed the fiction, reality is reality. she can't change the ending of her friend's story, no matter how much she wanted it to be a happy one
the oprec raises some interesting questions: is roberta making her friend look happy a lie? and, lie or not... is that a bad thing?
the embalming, the makeup - who is it for? this creation of a narrative that erases suffering? it's certainly not for the dead, and the only people who ever see it or even know it was done are roberta and the morgue worker, because the cremation happens basically right after. practically speaking, this story roberta is telling, this fiction she creates, can really only be for herself. but i think it's too simplistic to conclude that it is just selfish comfort. embodied in this story is roberta's wishes that her friend's passion could have been answered by the world they lived in, instead of being betrayed by reality
but who is roberta to be telling that story, for her friend with no voice? roberta wonders about this herself, when she gets that urge to erase all her work. but then she concludes—just for now, she wants to be an embalmer. she wants to let her friend "leave this world happy, even if it's all fake". in this way, roberta claims the role of storyteller, even if no one gave her permission to—after all, there is no one left to give permission. but she does so anyway, inserting herself back into her friend's tragedy from the outside (remember, her friend never actually sent that letter).
and so roberta tells her friend's story one last time, to a stranger, letting her live for just a day longer in their hearts...

something something hydro visions seem to represent a desire to protect or uphold a sense of fairness or justice and the only harbinger other than childe who we know for certain used hydro is crucabena who was very much only interested in maintaining a sense of motherly love and protection for her children as far as it allowed her to use them for her own benefit, while childe seems to love his family basically selflessly - he doesn't have any personal motives to other than that.

in my opinion at least, edgeworth and kay's relationship became a lot more compelling when I considered how much they are projecting onto each other
Mm, that's fair! It's been a while since I've played Investigations (I'm verrryyy slowwwlyyy making my way through the Switch port), so idk how accurate this is, but to me, at least, it's less so about projection and more so about them being genuine foils to one another. AAI2 kind of messes this up a bit, but I don't think Kay projects all that much onto Edgeworth, tbh. She strikes me as being too self-aware to comfortably do that and generally too stable to have much of a need to. I think people tend to forget that Kay, unlike many of the other assistants, does have an established support system prior to and after meeting Edgeworth, hence the whole Phoenix-&-Maya-fication of their dynamic. They're much more equal to me in that sense -- although she does make reference to how Edgeworth reminds her of her dad and whatnot, so I understand the projection angle, too.
Edgeworth, to me, can't help but project onto every single person he meets, so I don't have a problem believing he does to Kay as well. I think he sees her as a better version of himself in a lot of ways, like the person he could have been had the world been a little kinder or he a little stronger.

Time for some lukewarm undertale/deltarune takes lol
Papyrus is not going to be Kris's age, everyone else who we know from the other game got aged up if anything, so it makes no sense for the opposite to happen to him.
About his brother asking us to hang out with him, and calling him little or whatever, I have two takes: First, it's time to stop taking sans' opinion of him as cold hard facts. Look at how he acts in the other game, yes yes he cares for him and asks us to be nice, but please look at the bigger picture, which is that he would confide in a kid he just met about how his brother is naive enough to be deceived by a fucking echo flower prank. Papyrus doesn't help because he consistently dumbs down what he is saying when his brother is present (such as calling snow ice cream, or pretending not to know what a laboratory is, but clearly knowing when sans isn't around). Also, sans makes childish jokes all the time, so he might just be making a lighthearted joke at his brother's expense by inviting a teenager, because Papyrus might be a shut-in (in undertale he remarks on his house being his favourite place so maybe). I am not assuming malice from sans, but have some healthy skepticism towards the guy who makes "ur mom" jokes at some kid
Second possibility: THERE IS A THIRD BROTHER (my favourite take and I'm not serious about this one. but IMAGINE.)
And don't take this in bad faith that I'm saying sans might think his brother to be less capable than he is- it is implied, and Papyrus plays along. It would absolutely not be the first time in the game for a well-meaning character to make mistakes or not have the full grasp on what the person they intend to look out for is capable of-
Hm I wonder who... oh right, Toriel! sans's friend! coincidence haha She means well but is so absorbed in wanting to mean well that she loses sight of what that person actually needs. She also treats the human like they are less capable than they really are, and asks a third party to look out for us (as sans does with papyrus). Meaning well in itself does not mean you are doing no harm. I think the general attitude to Papyrus, in universe and in fandom, is a good example of that.

So why did Baylan feel the need to leave Shin before pursuing the Mortis Gods, or whatever it is he’s doing? I’m so curious as to where they were going with this. Like, he tells Shin to take her place in the New Empire, but she very much does not go back to Thrawn. Now, that might be because they lost the battle and she doesn’t want to go back with a defeat under her belt, or she feels betrayed that he pulled his troops. Or it could just be that Baylan completely misread her and that was never what she wanted in the first place. Baylan was not interested in fighting Ezra and the others for Thrawn’s benefit when he was so close to his own mission, but why send Shin off to do it alone? Did she herself, truly want Ezra and Sabine dead that badly? Ezra she doesn’t really know or really care about. Sabine, she has faced off with before and is certainly invested in defeating her. But at no point does she seem to value that over her relationship with Baylan. I really cannot see her voluntarily choosing that over Baylan, without him pushing her to do it, and certainly not so soon. Kills me that we’re gonna have to wait so long to find out any answers, especially with Ray Stevenson having sadly passed. I adore these characters and am endlessly fascinated with what we’ve seen of their journeys

Trying to see the positive side of things: if my thesis advisor find my work to be as bad as I find it to be, I'll have to retake this year, but I'll only have my thesis to rewrite, because the probabilities of me failling the rest of my classes is close to 0. So it would be a very relaxing year.

i know this probably won't happen but i think it'd be very neat if people like finn, marcy, bonnie and such get to visit fionnaworld at some point, i wonder how they would react to seeing their counterparts. not only that, but also seeing the other stuff from the other universes that are now camping out in fionnaworld. ooo's finn meeting farmworld's jay. bonnie getting to see the peppermint butler tank from the star's universe.
anyone in GENERAL seeing the babyworld finn 😭😭
...also, imagine if finn got to meet fionnaworld's fern. that would be crazy
