knowing akk is causing the curse makes rewatching the first episode so interesting. when he sees ayan, he's afraid aye saw him messing with the car (which he did), which is why ayan runs and why akk follows him. but ofc later when wat and kan ask akk what he was doing he says "the new kid was acting so shady" - which, to be fair, is true! but this time it's also clearly an excuse akk pulls out of thin air.

then immediately after, wat says this:

And then akk says "i must get him" (ayan) which really translates to "i have to keep an eye on him i have to know if he saw me" and also means "i cant let kan, my best friend, who is terrified of the curse, find out that im the one bringing it back"

it's just so much fun when you can see akk's side of it clearly when rewatching, because even though you see the story more through his eyes than ayan's, you don't actually start to understand him or his motivations until around episode 4 or 5. So all of what you see at the start is only what the writers want you to see: the overly-enthusiastic student prefect meets the bad boy type. and there is so so so much more going on! i just love when stories do that.

i also love how later akk says he has to find out ayan's motivation for transferring schools and then immediately the next scene is aye having his nightmare. sometimes the editing in this show could rly use work and other times im like 🤌🤌🤌

Just binged The Eclipse. This was in no way me delaying the inevitable packing. Nope.

As everybody said it's fab. All the parents are splendid - even Thua's stepdad who was definitely an evil stepparent red herring. Yes, there were holes (why did said stepdad want Thua to go to Suppalo when he had such an awful time there for example) but the acting was fab - Neo was a standout and I do hope First and Khaotung get another show, I think they could do high heat. Speaking of Khao this was the first thing I've seen him in since Tonhon Chonlatee and he was a revelation. And I liked that the shorter boy was the seme.

Friends to Lovers

It's hard to think of a friends-to-lovers story that isn't also a long-term pining story. I genuinely think the only one I've seen is My Only 12%. Have Cake and Eiw been in love their whole lives? Yep. Did either of them know it until suddenly they knew it? Nope. I think it counts. This show isn't my fave, but it did some things extraordinarily well.

Long Term Pining

Is this the #1 most frequent QL trope? Quietly hanging onto your feelings because you're pretty sure you're alone in them is one of the queerest experiences as I understand it, so it's not surprising that this trope turns up SO often. Given that there are so many of these, I'm gonna give it to my most recent fave: Perfect Propose.

Slow Burn

The key to slow burn for me is that both people have to know they're attracted to each other but just let the feelings stew and cook until they boil over. So I'm giving it to Kan and Thua from The Eclipse. These two have been down horrendous for each other for years and they finally gave in in a tent by the beach literally surrounded by their sleeping friends.

Helloooo, can you tell us more about the differences you spotted in The Eclipse novel vs the show? How is Ayan, specifically? I read somewhere that he's way hornier haha

So, overall, the two are very similar. P'Golf and P'Yokee should be very proud of themselves because The Eclipse series is one of the best on-screen adaptations I've ever seen. P'Golf had tried to gain the rights to this story even prior to learning that GMMTV already owned it and you can see their passion for the source material in the final product.

The biggest difference between the novel and the series that I've found so far is that Thua isn't the one who outs Akk as gay—Jumnan, the leader of The World Remembers gang, does. And while that's still an incredibly shitty thing to do, Akk did literally try to murder him and his friends, so it's not like it was entirely unjustified.

Thua does, however, still out Akk as being the one behind the curse. He is a lot more manipulative in the novel and there is even some suggestion that he pursued his relationship with Kan simply to get more information on Akk.

As for Aye's horniness level, I would say it's about on par with the series. If anything, Akk is the one that's hornier, but that's to be expected since the majority of the novel is in his POV. Starting about halfway through the book, Akk literally cannot be in Aye's presence without popping a boner.

That being said, I've only got one chapter left to translate and the two of them still haven't actually kissed, so I'm very doubtful there's any kind of sex scene in the first book. (Which means I'm going to have to translate the second one, too 🫠). Despite that, there is one particularly memorable incident where Akk pins Aye against a wall and finds the whole situation so arousing that he comes fully clothed and completely untouched in the middle of the school hallway. Because that's just who he is as a person, apparently.

I've managed to procure a shiny new AO3 account in the past week, so my plan is to start posting my translation as soon as I finish. I didn't want to post it on my usual account because I know there's a chance it might get nuked. If for some reason the translation gets taken down before I can post the full thing, I can put it in a Google doc for you guys. It's really a great book and it has only enhanced my enjoyment of the series.

Our Skyy 2 x The Eclipse Ep 2 (Finale) Stray Thoughts

Yesterday, we returned to The Eclipse and saw our student prefect boys and their boyfriends. We got to enjoy Akk and Ayan’s honeymoon camping trip before returning to the world and stumbling over some of their fundamental differences. Kan and Thua are being cute, but Thua would much prefer they engage in activities GMMTV is not brave enough to show. We all got to lament that Akk and Kan are still fantasizing about their boyfriends rather than engaging with them directly about what they want from each other. Wat is that film friend who definitely made a watch list for Akk that included Brokeback Mountain (and which I hope includes Big Eden (2000)). Namo is here, proving that Pawin was the primary scheduling conflict for Our Skyy 2.

On the political front, Golf continued to explore the ideas of the private and the public, and how these two impact each other. We also got to appreciate Golf’s deep love for Thai cinema itself. Finally, Golf continues to voice their frustration for what we might call keyboard warriors.

I’m having a great time, despite my need to voice my own issues with how we talk about these shows earlier.

I can’t listen to this intro anymore. I’m skipping it for the rest of Our Skyy 2.

I don’t want to get flagged, so I’m just gonna say I noticed how flexible Khaotun’s back is.

These two are so fun when they’re being sweet with each other. I hope Akk gets better at telling Ayan that’s what he likes best.

Khaotun and First are so incredibly expressive, and you can feel how easily the emotions flow between them. You can see Akk and Ayan choosing each other even as they don’t know how to get past this fundamental disagreement they’re having.

I’m enjoying the way these two kiss. It’s been satisfying. First and Khaotung follow through on the physicality between their characters after the lips stop touching so you know how they’re feeling.

I continue to love the text-level messaging in this show. You have to keep going even if you don’t know if there’s light at the end of the tunnel because you’ve done it before. You can do it again. You will do it again. That felt so honest from Kan.

I like how far along Kan and Thua have come, and I hope Thua gets the relationship he wants from Kan.

I have a lot of hopes for Akk and Ayan. They’re going to deal with long-distance romance and the continued difficulties of their perspectives, but the bond between them feels real.

They really gave us a shower scene and a domestic montage. We eatin’ good today.

Oh, I enjoyed that final “I love you” bed scene into a very suggestive removal of a shirt makeout and purposeful thigh grab. Very excited to see what First and Khaotung deliver in Only Friends.

Vice Versa next week with a secret baby trope. So…I guess that’s happening.

Final Verdict: 9, Recommended. I continued to enjoy what Golf was doing with this cast and characters. I loved how imperfect everyone felt here, but the desire to be more together lands clearly for me. Khaotung and First continue to be two of my favorite GMMTV actors, and I like how well they work together. I’m going to miss seeing Neo and Louis together, but I hope they keep up the good work this year. If you enjoyed The Eclipse, I think you’ll be satisfied by this special.

“Did you all see Aunt Waree smiling today?” Namo asks into the silence.

Akk glances up from his book. Their entire group is sprawled across various surfaces in one of the common areas of Akk and Wat’s shared dorm building, exam prep supplies scattered all around them across the furniture and the generic patterned carpet. 

To Akk’s left, Aye is tucked into the corner of a moderately-comfortable couch, a notepad propped up against his legs and his laptop balanced precariously on the armrest. He’s changed out of his uniform and into a soft-looking, pale green t-shirt. Akk thinks his lips might be shinier than before, too, but he’s really trying not to check too much. It’s been happening more often recently, the lip gloss, and it makes Akk — well. Not study.

Across from them, Kan and Thua are sitting squished together on a loveseat, both out of their uniform jackets and excessively cuddly, and Namo and Wat take up another couch. Wat sits normally, but Namo is on his back and half-sprawled across the rest of the cushions, legs nearly in Wat’s lap. 

They’re the only ones in the room; if Akk’s tenuous reputation with the Suppalo populace combined with Wat and Kan’s overprotective posturing has done them any good, it’s that any space they take up on or even near campus usually gets given a wide berth. 

“Yeah, right,” Kan says dryly, not even bothering to look up. For the most part they’ve been surprisingly industrious given the group composition, but somebody has been interrupting at almost-clockwork fifteen-minute intervals the entire time. Himself and Thua aside, most of his friends don’t have the best attention span; Aye does, actually, but he seems to be perfectly fine with interruptions as long as he gets to pester Akk during them. 

“No, for real,” Namo insists, letting his book drop open onto his chest. Akk winces. He could at least use a bookmark. “When she came into class, she was all smiley, and she even said good morning to us before the head of cl— before class got called into session. I didn’t know she could do that.” 

His last-minute word swap is likely for the sake of Thua, who’d lost his position after his suspension. To Akk, it doesn’t seem like Thua really cares about that, but they’ve all been doing kind of a lot of sidestepping around each other’s issues in group settings. Some of them are better at it than others. 

Akk has talked, one-on-one, with most of his friends; he’s cried embarrassingly into Wat’s shoulder, let Kan hit him then hug him, let Thua say whatever he needed to despite Aye’s disapproval and came out of it with the same fire-forged understanding he’d had before. He isn’t sure if the others have done something close to the same, but when they’re all together there’s an unspoken agreement to leave it alone. A group delusion, maybe, pretending that they’re normal high schoolers for just a little longer. 

Finally, Wat looks up, casting Namo a sidelong glance. “No, he’s right, I saw it. It is pretty odd, but she’s just always been the kind of person who’s very careful about her image.” 

Akk, for his part, had not seen it. Before class started today Aye had kicked him under their shared desk, and when he’d reflexively kicked back he’d gotten an inexplicably softer one in return, and then again until he realized they were just nudging each other back and forth and Aye had a silly little smile on his face (and he had one too, probably, definitely). He was not paying attention. 

So that’s why he’s mildly offended when Aye chimes in. “I saw it too.” Their eyes meet briefly, and Akk doesn’t know how to object without admitting to being embarrassing, so he’s still just frowning aimlessly when Aye continues, “She’s really been a lot more relaxed lately. Maybe she feels freer.” He doesn’t sound happy about it.

Akk gets it, he thinks; he’s had enough practice on the other end of this particular Aye habit. It’s just him being all empathetic despite himself again. He still wants to be angry with her, and he’d deserve to be, after all the school’s teachers did to him, but he can’t help seeing it from her side even though he’d really rather not. 

Wat, apparently noticing the shift in mood, sounds more subdued when he says, “I mean, it really wasn’t always so bad. Our teachers are strict, it’s— the culture, but I think it got worse this year. With— everything.” 

Akk winces. Everyone is looking up now, Kan’s face set in those serious lines that suit him surprisingly well and Thua’s eyes unreadable under his lashes. 

Uncharacteristically, Namo’s half-smile goes more sincere. “You’re right,” he says honestly. “It was better when Teacher Dika was here.”

Thua’s eyes snap to Namo and Wat’s eyes snap to Aye and Kan’s mouth half-opens as they all simultaneously realize that there’s only one person in the room who wasn’t in a different room all that time ago. He doesn’t know. 

Before he can think about it, Akk is already reaching out to put a hand on Aye’s arm. He hasn’t moved, or said anything, but Akk finds him tense under his touch, staring at a fixed point in the distance that isn’t quite Namo. His hair is coming unstyled a little, a strand falling into his eyes. 

Namo doesn’t seem to notice the temperature dropping just yet. He genuinely looks thoughtful as he continues, “Even if he was a junior teacher, it sets an example. Like Teacher Sani now.”

Akk lets his fingers travel down Aye’s bicep, hoping to get any reaction at all. He’s rewarded with Aye turning to look up at him; after a moment, his eyes seem to focus back in from wherever he’d gone to look at Akk’s face. 

“Namo,” starts Wat, sounding uncertain, but he’s interrupted. 

Swallowing audibly, Aye looks across to Namo and asks, “How was it better?” 

“Oh, right, you wouldn't have been here,” Namo says cheerily. “He was an English teacher, but he worked in student welfare, too. Not that I was there all the time, of course,” he adds after a moment, in an immediately suspicious way. “But he was a really nice guy, even when he would’ve had every reason to scold people, and I think other staff saw that.” 

That sits there in the air for a moment, until, quietly, Thua says, “He always had these jokes on the whiteboard in his office, in English, that he’d explain all the parts of even if you didn’t ask.”

Aye laughs a little at that. It’s more breath than sound, and it looks like it startles him; Akk gives in to his own urge to comfort and puts his arm fully around his boyfriend, fingers curling in the fabric of his shirt. Instantly, Aye leans into it, soft against Akk’s side even as his notes slide haphazardly out of his lap.

Kan, having clearly seen them, starts loudly trying to remember one of Teacher Dika’s whiteboard jokes, exaggeratedly mispronouncing the words to make Thua giggle. Grateful, Akk takes the opportunity to dip his head and move even closer. His lips brush skin as he murmurs into Aye’s ear, “You’re alright?” 

In his hold, Aye wiggles a little, probably ticklish, and says, “I think so. Mostly.” It comes out wondering, like he hadn’t been sure, like he’d expected it to hurt more. “I— he did that at home, too. He had printed-out lists.”

That doesn’t surprise Akk. It makes sense, he thinks, for Teacher Dika to have tried to show as much of himself as he could have. And Namo’s right; they had seen that, for better and for worse. He wouldn’t blame Aye if he never forgave anyone for what they’d done with that, if he stood up right now and demanded they shut up about him, if he said it wasn’t like they had any right to his memory. Akk certainly doesn’t feel like he does, some days. 

Aye doesn’t do any of that. He just curls all the way into Akk, breathes intentionally even, and listens to them talk with a contemplative expression on his face. The others cast sidelong glances at him from time to time, worried, and then less, and then they’re moving on, eventually getting back to what they’re supposed to be here for. 

But Aye stays tucked comfortable and close, refusing to move when they have to arrange their notes again, even though it’s not like Akk was letting go. Their friends make fun of them, but only gently, the same way they’d do for anyone else, and that too is different now.

Reverse Engineering the Best Kiss 💋 Bracket Seeding

I am very impressed by how accurate the BL brackets organizer's seeding has been so far! I reverse engineered the two seeded brackets ('cause i'm a procrastinating dork), and in both the first seed won, the semifinals was between 1 and 2, and the bottom 16 lost in the first round. Otherwise it wasn't perfect (because that would be no fun) but it was pretty close!

I was inspired by their answer to this ask about how they did the seeding, and extrapolated the order from these brackets.

Below the cut is the seeding for Best Kiss, so you can see what it looks like! (Assuming I ordered them correctly!) The Gender Envy seeding (as reverse engineered by me) is in this post.

(@bl-bracket I can delete these posts if they ruin the magic of it all.)

Of the 64 candidates, 10 did better than expected and 10 did worse, so 69% of candidates performed exactly as predicted by their position, and in 84% of match-ups the higher seed won.

The final 4 were the top 4 seeds, the semifinalists the top 2, the winner, 1st seed. The top 16 seeds almost exactly matched the final 16; Hojoon & Jaeyoon (Roommates) snuck up in there from 18th seed, and 15th seed Sky & Prapai (LITA) fell in the 2nd round instead of the 3rd. The bottom 16 all went out in the first round. The biggest shakeup was because of 7 of the candidates in the 2nd quartile who in the 1st round defeated 7 slightly higher seeded candidates in the 3rd quartile. The biggest upset was 48th seed Shi De & Shu Yi’s drunk kiss (We Best Love 2) winning over 17th seed Seojoon & Jiwoo kiss on the dirt road (To My Star 2), overcoming a difference of 31 positions.

If Akk was being honest, going to see Kan and Thua’s newborn was just another chore on a very long list of chores. He didn’t like babies. He didn’t see a point in meeting them. But once they finally arrived and he saw Aye take the little girl into his arms, suddenly everything changed.

“Guys, she’s beautiful,” Aye said to Kan and Thua reverently. Then he tilted the baby towards Akk so that he could get a better look and he was right—she was beautiful—but what really took his breath away was the soft look in Aye’s eyes, the happiness radiating off of him, the realization that he was standing there with a whole future held delicately in his arms.

Akk swallowed hard, trying to push the image from his mind, but suddenly Kan’s baby girl morphed into a child with Aye’s mischievous grin and bright brown eyes and Akk couldn’t help but wonder.

Days passed, but Akk couldn’t stop thinking about it. The child he had created in his head haunted his dreams. He would wake up in the morning with an emptiness in his soul. He would go to bed at night, imagining a child’s laughter down the hallway.

They had never talked about having kids—that was the thing. He and Aye had been together almost fifteen years, but kids had always seemed so far outside the realm of possibility it wasn’t even worth discussing. Akk had never even dared to let himself want it. But now he couldn’t stop thinking about Aye with a baby—teaching a toddler to swim, reading a child to sleep at night. They had so much love between them. It seemed a shame not to share it.

And yet, he convinced himself that the longing inside of him was temporary. One month passed, then another. It wasn’t until three months later that his resolve finally snapped. In the middle of what was otherwise a very ordinary night, Akk reached over and turned on a light.

Immediately, Aye groaned and ducked his head under the covers. “Just a few more minutes,” he grumbled, likely assuming that it was a perfectly respectable time to wake up and not two in the morning.

Akk saw no point in beating around the bush. “I think I want to have a baby.”

Aye was so still that for a second, Akk thought he had fallen back to sleep, but then, ever so slowly, he removed the blankets from atop his head and looked over at Akk warily.

“I’m going to need you to repeat that,” he said.

“I think I want to have a baby,” Akk said again. And then he clarified, “With you.”

“Well, I’d be more than happy to try, but I don’t think you and I are going to be able to make a baby,” Aye joked. When Akk didn’t laugh, Aye sat up, his face softening. “How long have you been thinking about this?”

“Months,” Akk sighed and Aye must have heard the utter dejection in his voice because he reached out and took Akk’s hand in his.

“You’re serious about this,” he said as if he had only just now realized it.

“Unfortunately,” Akk grumbled. “I just can’t stop thinking about you with a little baby. You would be such a great dad!”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Aye said, starting to pull away, but Akk wouldn’t let him.

“You would,” Akk reassured him. Aye just stared, eyes wide and hopeful. “Haven’t you ever thought about what it might be like to have a kid running around here with us?”

“I mean, yes, of course I have—briefly. But Akk, I can’t. Like genetically. My uncle struggled with depression his whole life. I’ve struggled with depression my whole life. I don’t want that for a kid. I don’t want to saddle them with all of that baggage.”

Akk had never thought about that before. “Oh.”

“But you,” Aye said, starting to get excited. “You have perfect genes.”

It was Akk’s turn to question things. “Oh, I don’t know—”

“You do!” Aye interrupted, using his fingers to trace the lines of Akk’s face as if he had never seen it before. “20/20 vision, the facial symmetry of a Greek god—and you’re so tall.”

“Okay, enough of that,” Akk said, rolling his eyes. Aye laughed joyously and then pushed him down onto the bed and climbed on top of him, the echo of an unanswered question still in the air.

“I wouldn’t mind having a baby,” Aye finally said, his lips only a breath away from Akk’s. “Not if it was with you.”

Akk smiled, his heart so full he thought it might burst. “Yeah?”

“Of course. A little baby with your eyes? Sign me the fuck up.”

Suddenly, a future Akk had never expected unfurled before him—a future him and Aye would build together. “We can talk about it in the morning,” he said, exhaustion finally catching up to him.

Aye laughed and rolled off of him. “Sounds like a plan to me.” Then he curled into Akk’s side and fell back asleep—a family of two, but a promise of more to come.
