While I will absolutely agree that CB2077 isnā€™t the ONLY game doing all this bullshit, or that other AAA studios donā€™t deserve the flack CDPR is getting, I have to say that this is absolutely the perfect storm and I think people are FINALLY seeing the problems in modern AAA gaming. CB2077 might be fun to play, may have a good story, but itā€™s almost impossible to see because of the glaring issues. Which, honestly, is a good thing. I hope games change after this.
under here
AAA studios have been like this and this sort of release has been completely normalised on all accounts by both the businesses themselves and fans because of the inherent reliance on modders (bethesda at the forefront of this), as well as the pushback every time companies actually go ā€˜uh we need a lil more timeā€™ (although... they just shouldnt announce potential release dates, im even of the camp they shouldnt even start releasing the game until like 6 months out from their official date because they fuck it up every time. borderlands 3 being the only game i know of being in ā€œsecretā€ development and then announcing itself in march for a september release. game itself aside, thats how companies should do it). easily i can remember a lot of 2011 release games which have had the exact same issues as cp77ā€²s release, and then every other game in between since. very rarely do you actually have a game that isnā€™t a fucked up mess of a pile of pixels. and it is always the customisable character ones that are honestly, genuinely, ugly looking at release. but you can definitely say its been happening looooooong before 2011, with unrealistic expectations, word limits, 11 month time frames, offloading sequels to smaller companies so they can suffer if it fails, etc etc. the entire system has been like this for so long... they dont know any real different nowadays.
i mean look. tlou2 released under crunch conditions this year, and was rewarded. it was ALL over the social media feeds, it was quite the controversy because, surprise surprise, the company promised they wouldnt do it uwu and then. bam ! crunch conditions. literally around that time too, bioware employees came out with a statement sayingĀ ā€˜man we wish dai FAILED so that back in 2014 we couldve proven crunch was a wrong practiceā€™. they say this as well after having to produce da2 in 14 months, which just suffered from fans and journalism for reusing environments, because it was produced in 14 months, and honestly? no one pointed that out back then, bioware themselves pointed it out again this year, 6 years after release, that that game was produced in 14 months. rdr2ā€²s release was hounded by stories of crunch, and they all disappeared into the night because... it was heralded as the best game of all time. that was 2018, 2 years ago.
i think too is that some people get kind of ... morally and ethically concerned. which is understandable. can you consume something when you know it was made under conditions like crunch? and i think one of the most confronting things about it is that 9/10, not only has your favourite company engaged in crunch conditions, they almost actively choose to continue with them. and then thatā€™s a whole other bag of issues blown up over there when it comes to what is able to be consumed what isnā€™t etc etc
i think also like a mix of marketing, promises and then the expectations of what the game will be like have really had cdpr earn the ire of fans which is just like... you donā€™t believe what these companies are saying. you never should, esp when itā€™s their ceoā€™s saying it who donā€™t work on the actual floor. bioware itself is the main culprit of doing this to the point they finally came around with all the da4 concept art and teasing to be like ā€˜ummm but actually dont get invested?ā€™. remember all that qunari lady fanart that bioware management was like ... please dont get attached? yeah. yeah. like at what point as well is there going to be heavy level of apprehension to approach this? and i canā€™t really talk either, i cracked open the door for mass effect again. i know exactly what kind of shit bioware will pull, i know they are teasing it already on social media, but mass effect is my ride or die series. thatā€™s why people keep opening the door on letting these companies get away with it. and you canā€™t fault fans entirely either because this is down to a science of how to get money. i mean, fuck, mass effect andromedaā€™s entire advertising campaign HINGED on the n7 logo. for the nostalgia value. and i see text posts in the same vein of both ā€˜guys, disney isnt gonna fuck you if you consume every remake for nostalgia valueā€™ and ā€˜its understandable why people do itā€™.
so then you have to go ā€˜well are fans as just to blameā€™ and then thatā€™s a whole other argument.
i think also like. i personally havent run into aaaannnyyyyyyy of the issues that you see posted online. which is ironic bc 1) i play on ps4 and 2) its an old dusty ps4. in fact a lot of ppl i have spoken to who have had issues have played on pc. does this mean the glitches dont exist? ofc not, the vids and screenshots are right there. but like... ive had a basically unhindered experience so far, and i get where ppl are coming from (i do, i promise) where theyve basically found the game unplayable. is there also a standard of what ppl consider unplayable because ive played most AAA games at launch when they basically rushed to slap the box label on the game and called it a day until they work on patches. when ppl consider unplayable is also just... different per person. some people have a slight blur on the screen when turning too fast even in an MMO and decide the game is horrible and unplayable. some people can have broken quests and npcs not loading and falling through maps and still be fine. thereā€™s no agreed statement of what makes a game unplayable either, which is why you read threads on twitter and someone goes ā€˜yeah this npc t-posed so i quit in the first hourā€™ with a dozen replies. everyone has different levels of it.
itā€™s a mixed bag of issues. im not excusing cdpr, but the ppl who worked on the game are honestly likely not the ones who pushed for a release. youā€™ve gotta look at sony and microsoft and ceoā€™s with bonuses coming up and the investors and shareholders and people who sit behind computers and read numbers detailing interest and demand and supply and how every single time they had to delay this game, the loudest (but smallest) bunch of assholes on like reddit and in the twitter threads complained that it was delayed AGAIN even though back in what 2015? they said itā€™ll come out when itā€™s ready. and yeah there are times when game delays result in a mismatched half assed sort of story (kh3... p5... ffxv... dai...) and then there are times when, if they need to delay the game... they probably need to delay the game. sometimes delays are bad sometimes theyre good sometimes you are sitting there like whew if you only didnā€™t try to be like THIS TIME this is the release date.
the ONLY WAY this will stop happening is, quite frankly, unionising. and everyone is allergic to that whole concept so like... this is ā€œthe perfect stormā€ as you put it. but itā€™s also not. people have been so disappointed over the last 2 years alone for gaming companies, the final product, the attitudes from higher ups, that i think cdpr is receiving a good few years worth of anger. i think theyre also on the receiving end of misdirection from american fans who still donā€™t fucking get the company isnā€™t american, because thatā€™s another bag of issues as well. like weā€™re holding at least 8 bags of groceries out of the back of the car now, and we donā€™t want to take another trip, because there are so many little bits of this entire situation to look at. thereā€™s so much back and forth.
i think the worst, but most realistic thing is: games wonā€™t change. how they will social media wise will. maybe. assuming bioware gets their heads out their asses but... theyā€™re going to be a lot more careful. i mean, hell, sony offered refunds. that was just a publicity stint. they dont give a fuck if the game was bad. as i said before, if they did, they would make all companies fix trophy problems, starting from like 2010 or whenever the trophy system first came out. they just donā€™t wanna fall in alongside cdpr being thrown on its sword. but the companies are gonna learn from this, get smarter, still do the same shit to their employees, still pay off journalists, still do media blackouts, etc etc. and weā€™re gonna be here in another yearā€™s time, with another game, having these same roundabout arguments, and cp77ā€²s issues are gonna fade into just a wikipedia article.

Since I'm curious, what caused you to become very possessive of your gifs? Not out of rudeness but curious, since no matter what you do a lot of them show up in the gif function on Tumblr which automatically credits you at the bottom of the gif.
Hey. Tbh, at first I didnā€™t wanna bother with yet another anon but since I see no ill intent behind this, I decided to go and answer it. Unfortunately, half-way through I realised my reply is turning into incredibly long semi-bitter rant and expands well beyond calling out just one person in Psychonauts fandom (and yes, this is related to Psychonauts fandom ā€“ you do know that these anons are not really that anonymous, right?) soā€¦ buckle up! All that beneath ā€œread moreā€.
Iā€™ve been on this hellsite for likeā€¦7-8 years? Maybe more? Canā€™t really tell cause I moved blogs and my old blog now consists of only 4 posts Iā€™ve made close to leaving so I honestly have no idea how much time Iā€™ve spend here before moving. Anyway, during those few years Iā€™ve spent on my first blog Iā€™ve met a lot of creative gifmakers who enjoyed sharing their love for fandoms they were in. Iā€™d like to point out that this was waaaaay before tumblr created that insert-gif option so, back in the day, the only way to add gifs to your post was to: 1. make them yourself 2. take them from someone else. And a lot of people were taking them from someone else which resulted in many gifmakers giving up on making gifs and leaving fandoms and/or even leaving tumblr ā€“ and Iā€™ve had many of my friends give up on what they love and have their games/shows/movies/whatnot ruined for them cause people would not stop stealing from them. And many of my friends eventually left tumblr cause they couldnā€™t deal with it anymore.
Tumblr adding insert-gif option, in my opinion, honestly, just made it worse for gifmakers. Cause now people had the opportunity to use gifs for their posts, with or without creatorsā€™ permission/knowledge, but it was alrightĀ and it was perfectly fine cause creators were credited. Thereā€™s their name at the bottom. Itā€™s alright. Likeā€¦ it doesnā€™t matter if theyā€™re actually okay with people using something theyā€™ve put hours into making or if theyā€™re not ā€“ tumblr gives them credit so they SHOULD be okay with it. Simple as that.
Well, weā€™re all different and some people are not okay with that. Iā€™m not okay with that. It took me weeks to figure out how to use photoshop correctly. Took me countless hours of looking through different tutorials and basically trial-and-error-ing my way through the process. Whenever I make gifs, it takes me hours to record videos and then hours trying to achieve that 3mb limit on gifs (thank lord these days weā€™re beyond 1mb limit). After all that effort I put into creating gifs for games that I love and enjoy, someone is going to make 2 clicks and have that same gif added to their post, without even asking. So how is that okay?
Back to your question. Yes, ā€œno matter what you do a lot of them show up in the gif function on Tumblrā€, that is true and that is something I was aware of when I saw you-know-who announcing they would be starting 30 days Psychonauts challenge. So, hating to see my gifs used against my will, and not wanting to start any unnecessary drama and threaten people in advance with reporting them if they do use them, Iā€™ve made my blog as private as I could. It was only accessible through the dashboard, it was not showing in ANY search engines inside and outside tumblr, and my gifs were impossible to find through insert-gif function ā€“ Iā€™ve made sure. I did all that cause I justĀ knew that during those 30 days, someone would use my gifs and I would get mad and I desperately wanted to avoid that (hence going extreme). And you know what happened? You know what creator of this challenge (who prevously already reposted my gifs) did? *drums*Ā They used my shit anyway. :3 They just uploaded it from their computer, where theyā€™ve saved it earlier.
And likeā€¦ a lot of people see pretty pic and decide to save it - I mean, we all do that. Heck, even I have a folder full of shit I saw online and liked it ā€“ but iā€™m not uploading it online cause I havenā€™t made it. Itā€™s not mine to share.
But some people are not like that.
Some people see fanart of something they like and they want to share their opinion on it ā€“ and instead of making their own post, maybe drawing the fanart themselves, they decide to use someone elseā€™s art for their post. Do they know who made it? Do they have creatorā€™s permission to share it? If the answer is NO, then they should be a decent human being and not do that to creators. Oh, they shared it anyway but now people in fandom are calling them out BUT this actually happened on accident? They know who the creator is but, somehow, they accidentally forgot to credit them? OK, well, itā€™s possible, shit happens, but they better make sure it doesnā€™t happen again.
Then sometime later these same people decide they want to make a post appreciating their fav character and they want to include pics cause duh, you canā€™t have character appreciation post without pics, right? Now they have several options: they can get their own screenshots, make their own gifs, maybe draw somethingā€¦ or they can just take someone elseā€™s creation. Do they know who made it? Well thereā€™s my fuckin name on it, and since theyā€™ve stretched it from 245 to 500px, itā€™s really hard to miss, plus itā€™s not like there are that many people making Psychonauts gifs. Do they have permission to share it? Hmmm, nope, didnā€™t ask me. Is this alsoĀ an accident? Could be. I mean, Iā€™ve seen stranger things happen, so accidentally forgetting to credit content creators twiceā€¦ kinda suspicious but still possible. Who am I to say?
Now if these people then decide to make a post appreciating their fav ship and they want to add a cute pic of the loving couple ā€“ yup, you guessed it! They can either create something or take something. Again: they know who did? They asked for permission? Got the permission? No?!?! But they posted it anyway?!?! :o Could it really be, that after being called out publicly, after being told that reposting is bad (something thatā€™s very easy to understand), after even having tumblr staff intervene and remove stolen shit from their blog, after all that - could it really still be an accident?
Nah, man.
They just donā€™t give a shit.
Cause if they did, theyā€™d stop with that crap first time they were called out.
(and if you think Psychonauts fandom is their only fandom and that theyā€™re not doing this crap in other fandoms too - hoooo, boy, do I have some bad news for you! Do you know how many stolen and butchered HP fanart is on their blog? Hobbit stuff? They seem to be one of the most accident-prone users on tumblr. And honestly - itā€™s a real miracle their blogā€™s not been terminated.)
Back to what I was talking about - Iā€™m not okay with people using my gifs and Iā€™ve made it very clear. I literally do not give a shitĀ if Iā€™m credited or not, Iā€™ve made it very clear that I donā€™t want myĀ gifs used without my permission. If you like them and want them on your blog, thereā€™s a fuckin reblog button. Itā€™s sole purpose is to allow you to share other peopleā€™s creations. Or shitposts, cause lord knows we all love those.
So thatā€™s why when someone spends hours going through my Psychonauts tag and goes as far as to send me ā€œI love your gifsā€ anonymous message, but the very next day makes stim moodboard post including one of my gifs, now cut and resized to fit 3x3 format theyā€™re going with, I get mad. And thatā€™s why when someone uses one of my gifs to promote their RP blog, butcheringĀ it to fit their aesthetics, and later when confronted going as far as blaming their good friend on it cause god! theyā€™ve had no idea it wasnā€™t theirs, I get mad. (makes you wonder though: if they friend has such skills, why not making them gifs themselves?)
Likeā€¦. Iā€™ve had my gifs stolen plenty of times. Iā€™ve had them stolen for roleplaying, for headers, for imagines, just for notesā€¦ Iā€™ve had them stolen by people claiming to run official fan sites (thatā€™s a real wild story but I wonā€™t get into that now)ā€¦ Iā€™ve seen them on pinterest, weheartit, FB, all those random gif sitesā€¦ and Iā€™ve seen EVERY. POSSIBLE. EXCUSE. ranging from: ā€œwell i found it on google so why should i credit youā€ ā€œlol dunno who made this but its pretty so im posting itā€ ā€œive had it on my computer for years so i donā€™t remember where i got it fromā€ ā€œi dont know how to make gifs so im using weheartit as a sourceā€ ā€œcredit to whoever made thisā€ (thatā€™s my fav) to ā€œits just a gif so who gives a shitā€ (itā€™s not ā€“ itā€™s hours of creatorā€™s time and lots of love that youā€™re now shitting on so thanks) and ā€œi have an /illness/ and getting notes makes me feel better so dont u dare blame me for stealingā€ (I donā€™t remember exact excuse but it was something along those lines and likeā€¦ how do you even respond to something that without looking like an asshole?).
And sometimes it really isĀ just an accident. Sometimes people really do forget to credit you and/or ask you for permission. And Iā€™ve had my fair share of those accidents. People in Psychonauts fandom have been using my gifs for various crap but, when approached, theyā€™ve removed it and apologised. And itā€™s something I really appreciate. (if they actually bother reading this and they recognise themselves: iā€™m really grateful and thank you for not being an ass)
But you know what I donā€™t appreciate? People making a callĀ out posts aboutĀ me, asking about my gifs when they know very well theyā€™re the main reasons why Iā€™m not making those gifs anymore, at the same time failing to address any of the issues I have with them and instead rather explaining to others what happened BUT explaining only the parts that make me look like a villain cause how I even dare be mad about them stealing? How I even dare call them out on it? That is so ridiculous and criminal of me, and itā€™s so so sooooo bad that they need to call me out. I deserve to be called out by the very same person whoā€™s been stealing my shit.
And their explanation isā€¦wellā€¦ itā€™sĀ something.
They were sympathetic and polite? When did this happen? Did I completely missed that part? Please someone fuckin enlighten me with such post/message where they expressed their sympathy and politeness and Iā€™ll apologise right this second.
I told them to ā€œliterally fuck offā€? Yeah, that did happen, I admit that. Did they bother explaining why I told them to fuck off in the first place? Did theyĀ say they were caught stealing from me and had tumblr stuff remove myĀ shit from their blog? Did they get into details of how they demandedĀ the proof of my so very wild and obviously false claims but then whenĀ I showed it, they just deleted that ā€œhow dare u call me outĀ cause I would never do such thingā€ post? No, they didnā€™t and geee, I really wonder why.
Instead, what did they choose to address? Out of all the things Iā€™ve said. Hm? What did they choose? Me telling them to fuck off. Me dropping the F-bomb on them, rudely rejecting their obvious kindness and politeness. Nothing else.
Back to what I was talking about before I got derailed again: no, Iā€™m not mad cause this person used my gifs without crediting me. I mean ā€“ I am, but thatā€™s not my main issue with them (and they know it). My main issue is that this is someone who will continuously lie and steal and still deny any of it, even when thereā€™s plenty of proof (and you can always count on me to show up with proof tbh), and then go as far as to publicly ask about my gifs and try to call me out. Like me getting mad that something Iā€™ve put hours of work into, and something Iā€™ve made cause I love the game and I want to share my love and appreciation for it, is now being shared against my will and my knowledge - like me getting mad over something like that is so unreasonable that they need to make an entire post about it while pretending they have absolutely no idea why Iā€™m even mad and why we have issues.
And I have every fucking right to be mad. 3 times is not an accident. 2 times to the same person is not an accident. They know it. But yeah, playing stupid is their defense so itā€™s not like I expected them to actually address their actions this time either.
And you know what? Just because I swear a lot doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m wrong. Doesnā€™t mean thereā€™s no solid ground for my claims. People on tumblr have always been and always will be stealing shit. Sometimes they will credit you, often they will not, and thatā€™s just how it is, doesnā€™t matter if youā€™re okay with it or not. But that doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m just gonna sit quiet and accept someoneā€™s shitty behaviour. Especially when itā€™s directed at me.
TLDR: giving credit =/= having permission
but my previous posts leading to this ask were not about that
you knew that already
