Not to get into Bo-Katan Discourse but the thing about Bo-Katan is that from what I've seen the people who like her are like "yeah she's a complicated person who's been through a lot and has done bad things but has also worked hard to try to make up for them and she's really interesting because of that also mean hot armor lady go brrr" and the people who don't like her are all like "she's an irredeemable bitch who's never done anything good ever and has zero nuance and I will interpret every single thing she ever says and does in the most bad faith way possible and act like every one of her flaws is unique to her and I will not devote this same energy towards other villainous characters who have redemption arcs even though the things they did are either just as bad or way worse than what she did and few of them put in as much work to try and right their wrongs as she did and also I will repeatedly bring up the fact that she was a terrorist as if I'm the only one who is aware of this" so like I'm inclined to lean towards the people who like her on account of they actually view her as a character and also are generally less annoying.
#seriously though you can only use the ''she was a terrorist!!!'' line so many times#before i'm just like. yeah i fucking get it. i know. i was there. i watched those tcw episodes when they first aired a decade ago.#like imagine if every single time someone said they liked ventress or kallus or whoever#ten people felt the need to remind you that she was a sith and he was an imperial as if we don't all know that#or like the way every time she talks about mandalorian infighting#and everyone calls her a hypocrite cause she was once part of that problem#like imagine if everyone jumped to call ventress a hypocrite every time she said the sith sucked#it's almost as if people change sometimes. like their character develops or something. wild i know.#shut up tristan

If this doesn't end in 100% Itchy, those pollsters are lying. XD

I'm gonna go with Morbus, putting your crush's wife in a coma and trying to persuade him into having her euthanized is pretty hard to forgive
kid-az
Boy do I regret not picking Morbus after remembering just what happened in Love PoisonâŚ.. Skel is an ass but atleast he wouldnât do THAT!
aveture
Ah I forgot about morbus and the love poison. Can I change my answer to that?
kid-az asked:
No joke I actually really loved Morbus as a character until Love Potion. After that all I want is for her cats to leave her and be adopted by better people and her being unable to find a cure for her outwards appearance being (Half) as nasty as she is on the inside.
-- -- --
These are all good points! I think in the name of fairness, we should have a break down of each candidate's most punch-worthy actions...
Itchy: "Allegedly" fucked a goat, burglarized homes, mugged people at knife-point, calls people slurs, assaulted an elderly person unprovoked, various peeping-tom behaviors, straight up murdered a dryad once, stole a horse from a soldier.
COUNTERPOINT: He has poor impulse control due to brain damage, some of these behaviors are not really his fault. Once he understands what he's done wrong, he usually feels bad and tries to make up for it. Usually. He's very capable of love and empathy for others, he just doesn't show it at the appropriate times.
Lukas: Murdered his own mother, is verbally and sometimes physically abusive to his crewmen, almost axe-murdered his best friend while drunk, victim-blamed a crewman who was sexually assaulted, tried to goad Zeffer into suicide and then hired an assassin to take him out when he refused.
COUNTERPOINT: Lukas acts the way he does due to immense trauma, and he's fully aware that his behavior is unacceptable. Recently in the series he has expressed remorse and taken steps to become a nicer, more empathetic person. He takes full responsibility for the pain he's caused others and doesn't make excuses for it. He is ashamed of his nasty behavior and is trying to understand why he acts the way he does, so that he doesn't keep repeating his mistakes.
Gwyneth: Cheats on, takes advantage of, and abuses her "husband" Brogan, extremely greedy and miserly, regularly insults people for no reason, flirts with married women and tries to break up marriages.
COUNTERPOINT: Gwyneth has endured the horrors of retail for decades. 'Nuff said. (Just kidding...In reality, she was kidnapped by slavers and quickly learned that the world is brutal and unforgiving, so she fears showing any sign of weakness or tenderness towards others. Bad experiences in her life have hardened her. She was probably aloof to begin with, but the experience of being kidnapped kind of "broke" her emotionally.)
Skel: Racist, misogynistic, classist, arguably transphobic, almost abandoned his crewman Jeimos in a hostile territory, verbally abusive to his crew and everyone around him, general asshole behavior.
COUNTERPOINT: Much of Skel's bigotry is hypocritical, and it's apparent by his contradictory thoughts and behaviors that he's quite mentally ill. His actions are much kinder than his words, and he performs these kind actions in secrecy, as if afraid to show any kind of "weakness" in front of others. Much of his hostile behavior is due to untreated mental problems.
Frederick: Literally stole candy from a baby, physically assaults people (including his own father) to get what he wants, acts arrogant and defiant, bullies others for fun.
COUNTERPOINT: Frederick is young and most of these behaviors are a result of bad parenting on his father's part. As he grew into his teens, Frederick started realizing this behavior wasn't getting him anywhere in life and promised to change. He has shown gradual positive changes ever since, though he does still slip back into his bullying ways from time to time.
Morbus: Neglected her son in favor of her career, abandoned her family, sold harmful drugs for decades, fetishizes and sexually harasses male satyrs, acts sexually aggressive towards Che, verbally abuses just about everyone, poisoned Philippa into a coma out of jealousy, forces her pets to live in her nasty hoard, generally snotty, selfish, and rude behavior.
COUNTERPOINT: I think it's obvious that Morbus is very, very mentally ill. This woman has been spiraling into Hell for over a century, completely untreated, and all the fumes from her alchemy career probably didn't help. I think some of her behavior is just due to her shitty upbringing, and she probably is a bit of a selfish bitch at her healthiest. But I also think her more extreme behaviors are the result of sickness and trauma that were left unchecked for way too long. To her credit--and this is a big deal imo--she does display some empathy and usually rights her wrongs eventually...granted, she'll reach the point of nearly killing someone before she does, but tends to shape up at the very last minute and save them from herself. She also apologizes for her actions once her conscience beats her over the head hard enough, showing that she's not a total psychopath. Morbus is undoubtedly a despicable individual, but it's hard to say how much of that behavior is really within her control. She gives the impression that she's been fighting a horde of personal demons all her life...and she's not winning.

AITA for killing on someone else's behalf?
Ok, long story short: my cousin who I'll call N (15F) and I (16M) were in the same class at this private, prestigious academy run by my dad. (That was definitely NOT nepotism, thank you. My dads definitely did push me to work for my position.) Along with like 15(?) other kids whose parents were all a part of the school before us, our class was cast into a mutual killing game- basically, we were locked in the school, and the only way out was to kill another person and get away with it.
N is very childish, in my opinion. It isn't an insult, but she acts like a kid, she's super optimistic and pretty naive, doesn't take things seriously, and she can't really handle these kinds of situations. My dads were very adamant growing up that I be kind to others and look out for those around me, especially N, being that she's my cousin and she needs me. So I knew I had to have her in mind first and foremost.
However, there was another student (16M) who quickly became... problematic. I'll call him L. L insistently and repeatedly tried to instigate others to commit murder, deliberately caused problems and damaged others emotionally, and even- and most heinously- threatened N's life with sincerity and in a very specific way- more or less provided her with his plan to enact her extremely violent murder. I knew that with L around, no one would be safe, and N would be put through extreme amounts of psychological distress, which would ultimately risk her life and wellbeing and cause her to suffer. As such, I... took care of L, inadvertently causing the killing game to officially begin for N's sake.
Once this came out, N lost it at me, and everyone else was infuriated, calling me a "self righteous hypocrite" for doing what L had threatened to. The others even got mad at N and began distrusting her because I killed on her behalf. But given our circumstances and the horrific things L said which I don't even think I'd be allowed to repeat, all with the intention of harming N, I really think what I did was totally justified. Yes, maybe the chemical burns were overkill, but that's really it.
So, before they vote me innocent or guilty of murder and potentially sentence me to death, am I really the asshole for what I did?

Life of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) - Part 21
Patience in the Face of Evil -
The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, would take every opportunity to call people towards Islam. But those who opposed him such as his uncle Abu Lahab strived hard against him in order to prevent the message of Islam from spreading. For example, during the fair of Dhu Al Majaz, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, called people towards Islam. His uncle, Abu Lahab, would follow him everywhere he went and would hurl lies and abuses at him. This incident has been recorded in Imam Ibn Kathirâs, the Life of the Prophet, Volume 1, Page 335.
This incident shows the importance of remaining patient whenever one strives in doing things which are good. Whenever one invites others towards Islam, commands good and forbids evil they will be challenging the heedless lifestyle of many others which will inspire them to resist the truth anyway they can. The major reason all the past nations rejected their Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, was due to this very reason. They could not abandon their lifestyles and characteristics and in defense of them were prepared to wage war against Allah, the Exalted, and their Holy Prophet, peace be upon him. When one takes up this important duty they must be prepared to face many hardships caused by others including their own relatives. The Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, are the most beloved to Allah, the Exalted, yet they encountered countless difficulties from their nations. One only needs to study the Holy Quran and the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, to observe this fact. For example, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, once declared in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2472, that no one in creation had been persecuted in the path of Allah, the Exalted, more than him.
In cases like this oneâs response to the bad attitude of others should be educated, respectful and gentle. An example of this is found in chapter 19 Maryam, verses 46-47:
â[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time." [Abraham] said, "Peace [i.e., safety] will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.â
Here the kind and respectful response of the Holy Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, to the harsh attitude of his elder is discussed.
In most cases, a person must possess a character flaw if they claim to get along with everyone. Due to the differences within the members of society a person will never get along with everyone. They will always be one or more that disagree with their mentality, life style and advice. This diversity will lead to tension and occasionally problems. But if a person is liked by everyone then in most cases it shows they have adopted the mentality of the hypocrites by being two-faced. If the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, were not loved by all how can a normal person achieve this status? This is the reason one should not believe in propaganda as the group that were mistreated the most in this way were the Holy Prophets, peace  be upon them. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 4023.
For example, the Holy Prophet Mosa, peace be upon him, was once falsely accused of illegal relations by a shameless woman. She was enticed into slandering him by the enemy of Allah, the Exalted, Quraoon. When she accused the Holy Prophet Mosa, peace be upon him, publically during a religious gathering he interrogated her. When she observed his reaction she immediately retracted her accusation and admitted the truth. As a result Allah, the Exalted, destroyed Quraoon by commanding the Earth to swallow him and his great treasury. This incident has been recorded in Imam Dhahabiâs, The Major Sins, Pages 166-167. Chapter 28 Al Qasas, verse 81:
âAnd We caused the earth to swallow him and his homeâŚâ
The Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, were slandered on many occasions but they remained steadfast on their mission until they were granted victory by Allah, the Exalted. When Allah, the Exalted, decides to complete a task like aiding the one who spreads the true word of faith the entire creation combined cannot stop Him.
Muslims must accept that they too will face hardships when spreading the word of Islam. Therefore, they must follow in the footsteps of the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, by remaining steadfast in the face of difficulties. This was the attitude of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and the righteous predecessors. If one desires to join them in the next world they must adopt this attitude also.
In addition, the attitude demonstrated by Abu Lahab in this particular incident is an aspect of hypocrisy which Muslims must avoid.
This type of person spreads corruption in society. This negative characteristic affects all social levels beginning from a family unit and ending at the international level. This type of person dislikes seeing people uniting on good as this may cause the worldly status of others to increase beyond their own. This drives them to backbiting and slander in order to cause people to turn against each other. Their evil attitude destroys their own ties of kinship and when they observe other families who are happy it drives them to destroy their happiness also. They are fault finders who dedicate their time unveiling the mistakes of others in order to drag their social status down. They are the first people to begin gossiping about others and act deaf whenever good things are spoken about. Peace and quiet disturbs them so they seek to create problems in order to entertain themself. They fail to remember the Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 2546. It advises that whoever covers the faults of others Allah, the Exalted, will cover their faults. But whoever seeks out and unveils the faults of others Allah, the Exalted, will expose their faults to the people. So in realty, this type of person is only unveiling their own faults to society even though they believe they are exposing the faults of others.

Chapter 6
Hotaru sends Shugo an email stating that she appreciates his help, Pikey is fine and she looks forward to coming on the Japanese server again.
(Time to know how to ban a contact, Shugo...)
Balmung and Reki are planning a new event and Reki thinks Balmung might be trolling too close to the sun this time. Balmung brushes him off and refuses to host the event itself, wanting to see it from the player's point of view (He's basically Jigsaw in the first Saw movie, so to speak.). He looks at bamboo leaves and thinks of a random chick...
Speaking of chicks, Rena, Mirielle, Ouka and Hotaru (Damn it, Shugo) are in kimonos writing wishes on the back of bamboo sticks. Shugo is having trouble thinking of his own wish so he spies on the others' wishes (Bad form). Mireille wants a rare life experience, Ouka wants to fight strong enemies and Hotaru wishes for world peace and no more fighting. Yeah, I agree with Shugo's assessment: their wishes suck. They're all platinum compared to Kamiya's wish though: he wants Rena's white socks (On a public server? Have you no shame, man?). What did Rena wish for? Well---
FUCK HER, THE EVENT IS ABOUT TO BEGIN! It's the fight for the Weaving Maiden and it's called Tanabata De Myudan (According to a translator note, it's a metaphor and has almost the same pronunciation as Tanabata, which means to take something without working for it.). Nobody likes the event name and Reki takes the heat for it (even though Balmung came up with it.). So what great event will entice all the players? First, a weaving maiden is chosen! The grand prize for the event is a night with the weaving maiden!
...
...Did Balmung just...prostitute a random player in this MMORPG?
If you think I'm reading too much into things, one of the encouragements is that the person can possibly build a romantic relationship with the weaving maiden in the real world. Is any of this legal? Who cares?! It's a VR game! No one cares! Shugo thinks the event is interesting. Rena is pissed and, even though she's pissed for the wrong reasons, for once, I'm on her side.
In the most disgusting karmic twist I've seen in a while, Rena is picked as the Weaving Maiden. Rena is pressured to talk about herself and, to the adoration of the attendants, reveals that she's 13 years old. Welp, she's a minor. We gotta pick someone else now considering that she's not even legal---
Fuck this manga.
(A guy in the crowd calls her experienced. Let's hope someone electrocutes him with his own laptop.)
Shugo now suddenly has a problem with a woman being treated as a prize when his sister is on the line, the other crowd member uncaring to his hypocritical plight. Anyway, off to the special area. At the Broad and Blue River, everyone participating has to play the part of the cowherd and rush over to see the Weaving Maiden on the other side of a large river. Shugo is intimidated (Shocker) but his sister needs him (not really) so he gears up to cross. Balmung shows up to participate and Shugo somehow recognizes him, declaring he won't let him get his hands on his sister. Mireille, Ouka and Hotaru decline to participate (because why bother giving somebody non-horny minded to root for?) and the race starts.
The river is deep and competition is fierce. Balmung smugly reveals he got top marks in PE and somehow, that matters in a personal environment. Also, there are sharks. Good. Everyone involved in this deserves to die. Mireille and Ouka watching, upon seeing a shark devour someone before their eyes, marvel over the rarity (Mireille) and the power (Ouka) of the shark. They jump in to fight and Shugo leaves them to it. Kamiya rides his giant Pikey through the water to give himself an edge while mocking everyone. Remembering Kamiya's gross-ass wish, Shugo punches his Pikey in the ass causing it to buck him off into the water, allowing Shugo to swim ahead. There are still at least three guys ahead of him though.
Meanwhile, Rena is waiting on her brother to rescue her (Come on...I mean, he is frighteningly enough the best option but there is no universe, situation or event where your best option is "get chosen for a date by my brother"). Rena complains about being singled out but Reki assures that they pick randomly. Rena lets it go, certain that Shugo will win. Reki quietly notes that they really do pick at random but Rena being picked out of all the girls just proves she is the chosen one.
Shugo is out of healing potions and douchey pervs (pervier than him anyway...somehow) are trying to kill him for his sister's hands. He fights them all off. A shark comes for him and he's doomed...until Balmung saves him. Shugo (again, understandably) won't thank him for helping but Balmung doesn't care. In fact, he helps him further by asking if he can't fight off a shark, how can he possibly hope to protect his sister? Shugo is pissed, all according to plan. He speeds off, resolve renewed, and...manages to tie with Balmung, who Rena fawns over. It turns out Shugo wins by a hat but Rena no longer cares. Having arrived and raised hell, Balmung leaves.
Back to the bamboo forest, Shugo is bummed and Rena tries to cheer him up (now that Balmung is gone, she's stuck with the incestuous booby prize). At least he knows what he wants to wish for now: he wishes to be strong. And now we know what Rena wishes for: she wishes for Shugo to be a warrior. Aura is watching as Shugo silently wishes to also see her again...
The chapter ends with Hotaru being pinched by a crab. Chapter saved.
THOUGHTS
OI, drop the incest angle already. And if you're commit to it, don't make Rena such a freaking hypocrite about her feelings concerning Shugo's libido. Portray them as normal siblings or make them a likable couple! Can't believe this is the kind of complaints I gotta make for a .hack manga. God, this is a dumb manga.
#.hack#.hack//legend of the twilight#good incest ships should twist your stomach in horror#not because it's forced#not because there's nothing there#but because the family members are portrayed as actual family#and there is something for everyone to read into#you guys are a long way away from elsanna#and homestuck could stomp the writers of this manga in a minute#look at this#this is the type of whining i have to do about this comment#this is all that's worth talking about#are you happy tatsuya#is this moe enough for you?#tw: incest

hi jello!! what about post timeskip levihan? commander hanji is working very hard and rarely, rarely sleeps (let alone eats and bathes properly. its worse than before now though.).
what if one time levi discovers hanji passed tf out due to sheer exhaustion in the most weird and random of places. he doesnât want to wake them up bc hanji def needs the rest so he carries/tucks her into bed.đĽşâ¤ď¸
JAZZY thank you for the prompt! I kind of combined it with this one too:
Thank you, Anon!
Preview:
Hange gave a small laugh before saying, âThank you Levi, I feel much better now.â
âTch, you havenât even done what we came here to do,â Levi scoffed.
Hange made a confused sound.
âDrop the dish.â
It had been 3 years since Shiganshina. Levi climbed into the carriage and sat across from Hange, who was still reading through her notes from the long and grueling meeting that lasted for the better part of the day. All the highest ranking military officials had been called to the capital to discuss Paradisâs best course of action. Queen historia was there, along with her staff, advisors, and of course Zackley. Levi had been to plenty of these meetings before, but this time was different in a bit of a distressing way.
Over the years, Levi had watched Erwin defend the scouts countless times. From questionable means of gathering information, to explaining away hundreds of lives lost, he always had an answer for everything and he always managed to leave with a favourable image. It was something Levi truly admired and even envied about Erwin.
But now he had been watching Hange flounder. She has indeed improved over the last 3 years, but she still doubts herself and while it might not be known to those around her, Levi canât help but feel sympathetic to her situation. Today however, the other officials had been particularly ruthless.
âTake a break, Hange,â Levi ordered. Hange just sighed. Then her stomach growled. âHave you eaten today?â
âUuuuuuuhhh,â Hange mused as she genuinely struggled to remember.
âTch, thereâs your answer,â Levi crossed his arms. The rest of the officials had a big dinner scheduled for tonight, but of course the Survey Corps got shafted and had to leave early in order to prepare. Hange met his eyes again with an exhausted look he was all too familiar with.
âHow have you been sleeping?â
âNot great,â she admitted. Leviâs stomach sank. He had dealt with his own insomnia his whole life, but it seems worse on Hange. Perhaps it was the stark contrast from her former bubbly and loud personality. Hange pinched the bridge of her nose and let out another long sigh. Levi couldnât help feeling inadequate and helpless. He rarely got himself to sleep, how could he help Hange?
Levi looked out the window at the setting sun when he got an idea. He realized what Hange had been neglecting while trying to be a good commander. Something that wasnât just eating and sleeping. Something that was unique to Hange.
âHange, thereâs one more thing you need to do before we leave.â
Hange raised an eyebrow.
Levi told the driver to wait for them and escorted Hange to the dining hall.
âLevi, we were technically invited, but I donât think showing up for food after we already said goodbye is a very good look for us,â Hange practically whispered.
Levi opened the doors and they were greeted with a sweet aroma of bread, appetizers, and whatever was going to be the main dish. Hangeâs mouth watered. The long elegant table was decorated with ornate candles, beautiful china, crystal glasses, and there were 4 sets of cutlery for each place setting.
âRelax, they wonât be here just yet. They will all be busy getting dressed for dinner.â
Hange grabbed a bread roll and took a huge bite, not bothering to chew before she commented, âI never understood âdressing for dinnerâ ugh. Whatâs the point?â
Levi was about to make a half hearted comment about how Hange could never fit in with âcivilizedâ society, but he stopped himself when he saw she was eating and was a little bit more relaxed. He found a small plate of savoury looking appetizers and handed it to her. She immediately took one.
âMMM, Levi!â she exclaimed, pointing at the plate. She popped another in her mouth before saying, âyou gotta try these!â
Levi put up a hand and said, âyou enjoy.â
Hange enthusiastically cleared the whole platter in less than a minute, and Levi was watching her, endeared at the behaviour. He had missed this side of her. Despite how gross it was, there was a glimpse of the carefree Hange he once knew. A small hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Then Hange belched.
âDisgusting,â Levi waved the air in front of his nose.
Hange gave a small laugh before saying, âThank you Levi, I feel much better now.â
âTch, you havenât even done what we came here to do,â Levi scoffed.
Hange made a confused sound.
âDrop the dish.â
Hangeâs one eye widened as she processed what Levi was saying.
âCâmon, you need to blow off some steam. They were total assholes to you today, and for what? You didnât know the exact amount of your food budget? And yet,â Levi gestured to the banquet. He then picked up a delicate looking wine glass. He held his arm outstretched, and loosened his grip, letting it crash to the ground. âOops.â
A mischievous smile stretched across Hangeâs lips. âOops,â she mimicked Levi and let the empty platter fall to the floor, breaking into dozens of pieces. She slowly started to lap around the long luxurious set up, like a predator admiring her prey before pouncing.
âRight? And Nile, ugh, what a hypocrite! Giving me shit for not knowing about that small thing, belittling me in front of everyone,â Hange snapped a salad plate against the edge of the table. âIt wasnât too long ago when he would have been the first to admit he had no idea what the first interior squad were up to! We had to find out for ourselves. Erwin was almost hanged!â Hange kicked a chair over on its side.
âYeah, fuck Nile,â Levi egged her on. He took a seat at the head of the table and started sipping from one of the water glasses.
âIs this his spot?â
Levi shrugged but Hange was already pouring out a glass of wine all over the white seat, staining it a deep crimson. Levi hid his delight behind another sip.
âAnd did you catch what he said at the end? âSome of us have wives to get home toââ, she imitated in a mocking tone as she casually pushed a platter of dumplings off the table. âYeah, run home, Nile. Run home to Erwinâs SLOPPY SECONDS!â
Levi blew water out of his nose, and before he could react, Hange reached under the short side of the table and flipped it over, sending its contents hurtling across the room. Hange was elated at the result, laughing almost maniacally.
âIdiot,â Levi hissed, grabbing Hangeâs wrist and leading her out the side door. He heard footsteps, and so he instinctively dove into nearby shrubbery, taking Hange down with him.
They hid in the bushes for minutes, Levi pressing his hand to suppress Hangeâs uncontrollable laughter. It had been so long since sheâd laughed like this. It was infectious and Levi might have actually laughed himself, were it not for the fear of getting caught. He had no problem telling the MPs where to shove it, but he didnât want Hange to get in trouble. Her whole body was convulsing, and it was rattling the leaves around her. Levi used all his body weight to stop her jerky movements.
After about another minute of total silence, Hange tapped Leviâs arm, signalling to let go. He was hesitant, but he obliged. Hange drew a couple deep breaths, fanning herself, trying to calm down from laughing so hard. Levi was transfixed by the way the moonlight danced on her tear-stained face. They stared at each other for a moment before Hange snickered once more, causing Levi to cover her mouth yet again. âYouâre impossible,â he said, pushing her head back down.
Once the coast was clear, they ran back to their carriage, hand in hand. Partly because Levi wanted Hange to keep up, and partly because it felt nice to hold her hand. They ducked their heads until they were off of the main roads. A few minutes later, Hange started giggling again.
âWhat?â Levi asked.
Hange bit her lip playfully as she reached into her coat and pulled out a bottle of expensive wine she must have swiped from the banquet.
Levi rolled his eyes, but couldnât help his smile. She looked like a child that just got away with stealing more dessert. She looked joyful for the first time in a long time. She yanked out the cork and took a swig before offering the bottle to Levi. He graciously accepted and tasted the wine for himself. It was too sweet for his taste, but he couldnât deny that it was spectacular.
âThatâs nice,â he commented.
âPfft! It tastes the same as the cheap stuff!â Hange scoffed as she took the bottle back. Any other time, Levi would have teased her and started an argument, but not today. He wanted to cherish this moment. He leaned over to look at the stars through his window. Not a bad ending to an otherwise terrible day.
After Shiganshina, he and Hange had lost so much. Their comrades, friends; life as they knew it had completely changed and they barely had a momentâs breather to come to grips with it all. Levi was unfortunately accustomed to it, but Hange wasnât. Hange had been so strong through all of this and Levi wanted to find the right words to tell her. Maybe it was the exhaustion they both felt; maybe it was the close proximity, but for some reason, somehow, Levi felt a tiny bit of courage surge through his veins.
âHey, Hange, I-â
When he turned to look at her, she was fast asleep, neck crooked as she cradled the bottle of wine. Levi smiled at her. She looked peaceful, like she was getting quality sleep. He took the bottle from her arms and gently maneuvered her to a more comfortable, lying down position. He removed his jacket and draped it over her, as a make-shift blanket.
âGoodnight, Four-Eyes,â he mumbled to himself and returned to his seat. Hange slept the whole way home. When they finally arrived in the southern barracks, Levi couldnât bring himself to wake her up. He quickly ran their luggage up to their rooms, and came back for Hange.
Being as gentle as he could, he scooped up the commander and ignored the curious look he got from the carriage driver. She was taller than him, and her long limbs made the trek a little difficult, but he was determined. Her steady breaths tickled the skin of his neck.
He carried her up the winding staircase and into her quarters. He lowered her on the bed, careful not to go too fast. He cradled her head for a split second longer than he needed too. He took off her long boots one at a time, placing them silently on the floor at the end of the bed. He undid the top two buttons of her jacket and shirt, just for comfort. Then he pulled the blanket up to her chin, and tucked around the sides.
Finally, he removed her glasses and eyepatch, caressing the tender skin underneath. Placing them on her night stand, he got up to leave. The door hinge creaked as he opened it, and Hange stirred.
âMmm Levi?â She called out.
Levi wasnât sure if she was actually awake, or if she was sleep-talking. He was still deciding whether he should answer when she continued, âThank you, Levi. For everything.â
âYou too, Hange,â he spoke just above a whisper, as he closed her door.

Original Article: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/yI4arm9P9nJwE3RMSUW-5Q Original Author: ć¨ćäş Translatorâs note: The original author is part of Yuli Studio, this article is published in Yuli Studioâs Weixin Official Account on 23 Apr 2021 as a part of âBehind the Screensâ Volume 640.
On 22 Apr, âA Dream Like A Dreamâ Wuhan Charity show was still in the midst, countless related topics were already on Weibo Hot Search.
This is probably the hottest play on the internet till date.
A big intellectual property that lasted for 21 years, and now with the addition of the hottest celebrity, debuted for the first time as a Charity Show in honor of the heroes of the pandemic last year, âA Dream Like A Dreamâ contained stories on stage and backstage.
Before the official start of the play, Yuli Studio walked into the backstage of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, and entered the dream in advance.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ
Celebrity Cast
On 19 Apr noon, 15 minutes before the first full dress rehearsal for âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, there were not much audiences, they were all in the lotus pond seats.
Overall producer Wang Keran was suddenly notified that there was someone recording secretly, he immediately called the executive producer Da Shan to check, who had already expressed multiple times that audiences were not the take pictures. Wang Keran face turned gloomy, loudly accused Da Shan of incompetency, stood up, âTrusted friends who are currently seated, I hope that everyone would protect the actors, stop filming.â
Afterwards Wang Keran told us, his anger then was actually âfor showâ, that situation needed him to make a stand, scold Da Shan so as to alert everyone else, âI needed to kill two birds with one stone, control the scene, protect the actors.â
Xu Qing, Xiao Zhan, Zhang Liang, Huang Lu⌠the addition of many celebrity actors, caused the interest in âA Dream Like A Dreamâ to increase.
Protecting his actors, was something that Wang Keran always did ever since he built this group.
Yanghua Theatre and Baoli Theatrical Center collaborated and did some massive and intricate work, in order to ensure that protection project was as per usual, âThe theaters put in a lot, the meager profits that this project is giving them, canât completely cover their massive investment.â
Wang Keran also helped to block countless signature and photograph requests for Xiao Zhan, his good friend had came from afar to Wuhan just for a photograph with Xiao Zhan, but Wang Keran did not agree, âI promised a clean creative environment for my actors.â
The âA Dream Like A Dreamâ group tried their best to give all the actors an equal, harmonious creative environment, and in here, there is no celebrity actor Xiao Zhan, only Patient No. 5 B.
In the backstage of the Wuhan Qintai Theatre, the plaque on the door of Xiao Zhanâs resting room was not labelled âXiao Zhanâ, but âNo. 5â.
Director Chen Limei and Zhang Rui said that the group did not treat Xiao Zhan specially as a celebrity; Actress Huang Lu, who portrayed the role Jiang Hong, had the most scenes with Xiao Zhan, she said that everyone was just actors.
Privately, Xiao Zhan would treat Huang Lu fruits, as well as recommend good motives to her, Huang Lu said, working with Xiao Zhan was not much different from working with other partners, the only difference was that there were suddenly a lot of Xiao Zhan fans leaving messages on her Weibo, most of them were messages of encouragement and support.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ , Xiao Zhan, Huang Lu
During the very initial rehearsals, the director closed Huang Lu and Xiao Zhan into a small practice room, in order to cultivate tacit understanding.
âWhen we were rehearsing the French portion of the play, I knew he was from Chongqing, I would suddenly use French translated to Wuhan dialect to talk to him, what dâya wanna eat what dâya wanna eat, and then he would suddenly reply me in Chongqing dialect.â
Huang Lu remembered, when Xiao Zhan entered the group, he had already memorized all of his lines, the tacit understanding between them were built up within 3 or 4 days, and on the details of the performance, they would also inspire each other.
For example, the biggest reaction from the audience in the Wuhan show was the scene in the Parisian apartment, actually contained Xiao Zhanâs designs, when they spoke the lines âMonday Wednesday Friday Tuesday Thursday Saturday and Sundayâ, Xiao Zhan suggested that the two of them would lean their heads on each other, so as to give a better effect.
When the two of them were conversing in comedic Japanese scene, there were traces of the old version of the play, but there were new creativity as well, âPikachuâ was from the old version, whereas âsleepingâ was an idea that Xiao Zhan came up with.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xiao Zhan, Huang Lu
The duration for âA Dream Like A Dreamâ was long, the lines voluminous, there was once during rehearsal, one of the actors had a sudden breakage and his lines became more and more scattered, voice lower and lower, that day Director Chen Limei gave him a stern talking to, but in the directorâs memory, this problem never occurred to Xiao Zhan.
âXiao Zhan was very serious, we could all feel that, every night after he went back, he definitely thought through his scenes once more, so that he would not make this kind of mistake.â
Xiao Zhan expressed that his familiarity with the lines had gone to the state that he could say it âwheneverâ, he was more focused on the âcurrent feeling and the chemistry with his partners.â
Xiao Zhan was very strict with his own expectations, on the 19th after the first full dress rehearsal, there were many audiences who gave his performance good reviews, but he said, âIâm not quite satisfied with today, it wasnât as good as yesterday.â Although the audiences did not spot any problems with the lines from the scene âMonday Wednesday Friday Tuesday Thursday Saturday and Sundayâ, but after the performance ended, Xiao Zhan himself felt that there were some slight flaws.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xiao Zhan
The lotus pond seats in âA Dream Like A Dreamâ to Xiao Zhan was a challenge, it made it easy for him to lose concentration, and once you had lost it, it would be easy for the scene to scatter, he described, âthe feeling in concerts is that you need to interact simultaneously, plays to me meant that I need to make myself lonelyâ, so he needed to make sure he could ignore the audiences.
Wang Keran invited theater critics to view the play for the 19thâs full dress rehearsal, after the upper half ended, they were exclaiming in praise of Xiao Zhanâs acting, Wang Keran also proudly recommended this newly found actor to people around him: âHe had a different layer of creativity process, the first day weâve finished the script, he surprised me onstage the second day, it was green but came with a lot of accurate instincts. He constructed the character to be intricate and abundant, but yet layered, not just emotional scenes, everyone could burst into emotions, but he was intricate, lively and entertaining, he conveyed the soul of the character, his sense of pace was this good.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ Performance Stage
The story of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ and Xiao Zhan had to begin with the Cao Yu 110 Anniversary Special Event last year.
In 2019, Wang Keran heard of Xiao Zhanâs name, but he quickly forgot about it. âThen I was in Wuxi, there was a large excited crowd of people, said that the hottest actor, Xiao Zhan, was in there.â
Until 2020, a psychiatrist friend told Wang Keran, to take note of this actor Xiao Zhan.
âBefore then I was an older person, Iâve always picked actors above 35, but after the psychiatrist finished talking, I started subconsciously noticing this person, and then I found out that this person was really interesting.
How interesting? There were a lot of people attacking him, I thought Iâd understand what these attacks were, I found out that these people were a contradiction of the most realistic things and most hypocritical things, this eraâs idols were different from 5 years ago, they are now placed on a pedestal as a symbol, as something to be fought over or stepped upon. Via Xiao Zhan I noticed the new pulse in the development of society, understood this movement, art should be something that is most compatible with the times, my personal view on plays is just like this, plays should be the current drama action of this moment, and the emotional relationship of the people here and now.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xiao Zhan
The commemoration event for Cao Yu, Wang Keran needed to find a young guest who could have a conversation with Wan Fang, a colleague suggested Xiao Zhan, Wang Keran suddenly realized, this was perfect, âThe complexity on Xiao Zhan would fully represent the complexity of plays.â
The first time he met Xiao Zhan, Wang Keran captured the mysterious sense of fate behind his back, but yet he also gave a sense of youthful obtrusiveness, gentle and warm. Wang Keran gave Xiao Zhan a list of books and asked him to go back and read, after which Xiao Zhan finished the books in a few days, even wrote some 10 over questions to Wan Fang, the questions were simple but deep, and moved Wang Keran.
On the Cao Yu Commemoration Event, Wang Keran studied Xiao Zhan, and found that his sense of stage was fantastic, and immediately invited him to join âA Dream Like A Dreamâ.
To Wang Keran, the similarity between Xiao Zhan and Patient No. 5 was that they were both trapped in the uncertainties of fate.
Xiao Zhanâs portrayal of Patient No. 5 gave Wang Keran a pleasant surprise, as to whether he would continue as Patient No. 5 after this yearâs shows, they had not spoken about it, but Wang Keran felt that âA Dream Like A Dreamâ already gave Xiao Zhan some rewards, âI feel that via this play, he can prove that he is a good actor, I feel that âA Dream Like A Dreamâ gave him a power.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xiao Zhan
Entering the Dream Again
Not only Xiao Zhan was a new addition, the Yanghua version of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ had almost a brand new cast.
Zhang Liang and Yanghua had collaborated for 2 plays, they were old friends; Huang Lu was recommended by Xu Qing, she was also the only actress that was confirmed without meeting Wang Keran.
Director Zhang Rui was in-charged of arranging actors, but because of the pandemic, the Taiwanese actress who was supposed to play the role of the wife could not arrive, another actress had to take on this role. âA Dream Like A Dreamâ had a total of 31 actors and actresses, many times one would take on multiple roles, any adjustment of actors would have big ramifications.
Zhang Rui created many versions of the casting chart, âThis casting chart was an intricate process, move an actor, we might need to reallocate every scene, whether they could make the scene in time, whether they were suitable, reasonable, Iâm so frustrated my hairâs dropping.â
Starting from 2013 when âA Dream Like A Dreamâ premiered in Mainland China, Director Chen Limei and Zhang Rui grew with this play for 9 years. Chen Lipai previously also handled the role of Stage Executive, Zhang Rui was with the crew everyday, there were the two who were most familiar with âA Dream Like A Dreamâ.
In their memory, the first rehearsal for 2013 lasted 3+ months, after which if there were not much changes with the actors, repeat rehearsals would last 1 week. Some years they had to change an actor, but yet they did not give sufficient rehearsal time and almost drove the actor insane, âBecause the crowd actor had to act as multiple roles, the management of every role was complex, he needed to remember his position, his clothes, and he had to depend on himself, there would be no one backstage to inform him, he had to take care of himself.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ
This year, more than half of the cast was changed, theoretically they needed one and a half months, but to gather 31 actors to rehearse at the same time was not easy, the group merely squeezed out 17 days for practice time.
Practice time started officially from 9 Mar, the group settled in Hebei Tangshan, the time was tight, the mission was heavy.
Lai Shengchuan, who was faraway in Taiwan, gave instructions via video conferencing to the actors, to help answer their questions. Wang Keran, Chen Limei and Zhang Rui handled the task of direction.
Wang Keran mainly handled the mini classes to the new actors to the group, every actor had different classes to attend.
Huang Lu was a movie actress, her method for lines was to say to herself, but âA Dream Like A Dreamâ was to say them to 1200 audiences, Wang Keran gave her a training method, âHe made me rehearse only with Xiao Zhan, each of us would stand at the furthest corner, but we must be able to hear each otherâs lines, that is we needed to get used to speaking loudly, I felt that this method was actually quite crucial.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xiao Zhan and Huang Lu during practice
When he first entered the group, Zhang Liang was tortured by the role of the Baron for 3 days, he totally could not find the sensation, Wang Keran gave him 3 days of progressive classes. The first class was to control the micro expressions and movements, âFor example, the first day I reached Tianxian Court, he requested that when I did gestures, my hands could not be higher than my chest, when we normally spoke my palm would face up, but he said that the Baron could not have a moment where his palm was facing up, his palm would forever be facing down.â
The second class was culture class, discussing European culture, politics and artistic background, so as to understand the motives behind Baronâs actions. âBaron would not let Xianglan draw abstract art, made her start from still life, it actually had political connotations. Classical realism represented calm and control, whereas abstraction and symbolism, etc, developed from the lowest of the masses, represented the destruction to order, Baron hoped from the bottom of his heart that Xianglan would live with him, if you liked something he didnât like, that represented betrayal to Baron, thatâs where the cracks in their relationship started.â
Chen Limei and Zhang Rui understood every detail of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, when the actors gave any small questions, they would immediately solve them.
For example, how to swiftly get into positions, what to wear after changing out, both directors could immediately give the correct answer, âWe found that this time round that one of the new actors was slow in moving, he would say he could not make it, I would say you definitely could make it, you tell me why you couldnât make it, I would know where you did wrong. He said it was very dark and he couldnât find his bag, and he needed to take the gun from 2nd floor to the 1st floor, I said thereâs another prop gun downstairs, you donât have to carry it down, he said he didnât know. We actually spoke to him after observing him for a few days, because we knew that the 2nd floor was very dark, we definitely had to ensure the safety of our actors first.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing, Xiao Zhan, Zhang Liang, Huang Lu, Lan Nan, etc.
The time left for the directors was not much, rehearsal, costume, positions, etc, all had to be done simultaneously, the volume of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ was supposed to be large, there were pressures on progress, the experience for the whole group was basically demonic scheduling.
For example, for 22 Apr Charity Show, the schedule for the actors that day was like this â
10:30 to 11:30 Actors and actresses would set of from their hotels to the theater for make up and costume; 12:30 Lunch; 12:30 Microphone testing; 13:10 Warm up; 13:30 Audience entry; 14:00 Start of Charity Show.
After nearly 8 hours of performance, when the actors were having their media session it was already 30 minutes past midnight.
Everyday they worked for around 12 hours, that would be the normal hours for the group for the month, during practice they did not wear their make up and costume, but they still had to set out by 12:00, practice starts 13:00, 17:00 was dinner, 18:00 was practice again, and they end at 22:00.
âThis time round we really went for it, we didnât work this hard previously, because we changed very few people then, we could probably get to the practice at 2pm,â Chen Limei said.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, actors practicing
The tight rehearsal schedule was a challenge physically to the actors, as they practiced day and night everyday, even Huang Lu felt lost once.
âBecause we would be acting the same thing everyday, everyday when you went in, it was day, but when you left, it was night, that period of time I really craved a normal life. There was once we were video conferencing with Teacher Lai, I just said that after this play, I suddenly feel that plays, movies werenât that important, whatâs important was our real life, I especially wanted to experience communicating with people, the feeling of being with family, friends and loved ones.
When you filmed dramas, you would still be outside, after you knock off you could be in touch with a more realistic life. When I was in the same play group as Zhang Ruoyun, we practiced in Beijing, everyday we practiced for around 3 hours, we could still meet friends in the afternoon and night, but this play was concentrated practice, when we left it would already be midnight.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing and Huang Lu during practice
Wang Keran could foresee, that actors would experience this type of lethargy, so the arrangement from the very beginning was that after the 17 days of practice, the group would briefly rest for a period of time, until a week before the Wuhan Show, where he would recall them.
This method of working was not easily seen in plays, but to actors, this was a good time to rest and digest.
âThe first day we returned, Keran said that was the best time Iâve acted with Xiao Zhan,â Huang Lu said. âPerhaps in-between I had time to digest, get in touch with real life, and had a new understanding.â
In comparison with âA Dream Like A Dreamâ from 8 years ago, besides the changes in actors, this yearâs Yanghua version also shortened the script by around 15 minutes or so, without affecting the foundation of the script.
The adjustment was mainly on the pace of the actors. For example, at the end of the upper half, the housekeeper of the castle would talk about the past of Baron and Gu Xianglan, it used to use a slow and narrative tone, Wang Keran felt that it was not right, âThis type of expression seemed to cause Grandpa, who just arrived at Shanghai, to seem unfamiliar with his surroundings, but in fact, Grandpa was very familiar with the castle, he could have returned frequently, like the feeling of a tour guide,â so he adjusted the tone and pace, and made the play richer and more layered.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing, Zhang Liang, Lan Nan
Every improvement in detail, came from written notes from everyday.
When rehearsing, both directors would sit in the middle of the lotus pond, with a small table, and a faint table lamp, the actors would be acting while the directors discover problems and mark it in the script, or write furiously on white paper, after the end of a dayâs rehearsal, the paper would be littered with over 200 to 300 notes.
After the rehearsal ends, actors would sit together in the lotus pond and listen to the directors reading the notes one by one, every actor would record down their respective portions.
Xiao Zhanâs phone memo was full of everydayâs notes, for example there were around 10 notes for 19 Apr, Xiao Zhanâs note taking method was simple and concise, note down the scene, or a point, with the remarks of watch out for emotion or pace.
In Zhang Liangâs memory, with regards to his notes, there were up to 20 notes a day, but later on as the problems lessened, the notes also reduced.
Director Chen Limei said, some actors would be confused, why were there always 200 to 300 new notes everyday during the note session, did that mean that they had not improved, but actually everyone was getting better on the basis that they were already getting better.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, the directors at the rehearsal
There was a process in practicing, at the start you might not have memorized all the lines, that note would be about lines, when the lines passed, it could have been about wrong position or movement, at the last part when the acting was getting better, I might notice intricate details such as costume, hairstyle, which you needed to notice carefully. Every stage had its own set of problems discovered, only when you walked from Step 1 to Step 2 that I can see the problems of the current step, otherwise my focus would not be that.â
For example, on the last day before the official show, the note for Xiao Zhan became âthe singing before the curtain call, stand slightly westwardsâ this type of small details.
After experiencing the full dress rehearsal of 18, 19 and 20 Apr, the last day of rehearsal became ânote rehearsalâ, that is to repeatedly rehearse based on the problems in the notes so as to affirm the scenes that could easily cause issues, including the group scene at Tianxian Court, the scenes between Baron and Young Xianglan, etc. For Xiao Zhan and Huang Lu, the scene they rehearsed was the propless scene around the staircase, which needed to take note of the eye contact as they two of them went up and down the stairs, entering by pushing the door.
After the premiere on 22nd ended, the notes continued, so as to have new improvements for the consecutive shows.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing, Zhang Liang, etc.
Idealism
After the full dress rehearsal ended on 19 Apr, all of the actors gathered backstage, surrounding the directors, quietly standing, it seemed like a special ceremony.
For the new actors who joined this year, this was their first time witnessing this ceremony, but to the actors who had been with âA Dream Like A Dreamâ before, this had already became a habit.
Director Chen Limei introduced that this ending ceremony was called âEchoâ, it was a habit from Lai Shengchuan a habit that existed since the first premiere in 2013, âWhen we finish a show, and gain the applause from our audiences, as well as new empathy for our roles, we must return this feelings out, give them to more people, you can imagine that there was a large crowd of people, we would send out these blessings and share them.â
After âA Dream Like A Dreamâ came to Mainland China, it had always been well acclaimed, it used to show in Beijing and another specific city. Starting the 9 Cities Tour, especially adding the Wuhan Charity Show, was also a form of âEchoâ, to share this play with even more audiences.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Wuhan Charity Show inside view
2 years ago, in Chongqing Theatre, Wang Keran came up with the idea to get more people to understand theater, experience theater. He started conceptualizing the 9th Anniversary 9 Cities Tour for âA Dream Like A Dreamâ.
When they heard of this plan, Chen Limei and Zhang Rui thought it was an impossible wish.
âBecause âA Dream Like A Dreamâ was such a large play, we would actually lose money by doing a tour. Such a big group, thereâs about 130 people in the group, so many peopleâs living expenditures, including putting up the set for each location, it takes a week to put it up, only for a few shows.
Until the start of last year, Keran told us that we would still do it, I said we really had to do it? How could we do this in the pandemic? Last year he said that we could definitely do it the next year. This might had to do with his view of life, he would do what he set out to do, just like then when he did his first play, he sold 4 houses.â
In comparison with previous âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, the investment of this tour was obviously bigger. More touring cities meant that there was more costs with transfer of set, when they rehearsed in Tangshan it was not as good as Beijing, all the actors had to be in Tangshan with their living expenditures.
On the other hand, the seats in the theaters were fixed, thereâs a ceiling to the ticket prices, in the face that it was not profitable, Wang Keran included a not-for-sale charity show, âThe cost is too high, after completing the charity show, we basically have no profits for this stop,â Wang Keran said.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing and Xiao Zhan during rehearsal
Early last year during the pandemic period, Wang Keran already thought of doing a charity show in Wuhan.
Then, he spoke on the phone with the person in-charge of the theater, and asked about the situation in Wuhan, âHe had always stuck to Wuhan, and told me that if you really cared about us, then you should bring your best show over, I asked which one did you mean? He said âA Dream Like A Dreamâ. I just felt that if âA Dream Like A Dreamâ did not come, it would not fully express our special respect for Wuhan, and we would do a charity show, free.â
The actors had the same idealism.
Wang Keran said, theater would definitely be tough, the rehearsal time was long, and while they would perform for 3 days in every stop, they had to allocate 1 week for practice, a popular artistâs time would be calculated in days, but they were willing to allocate their schedule for the play.
Sun Zhongyi, who played roles such as the old housekeeper and professor, was one of the core actors for Yanghua Theatre, he was given the rare opportunity for a lead role in a movie, it was very important to him, but the schedule collided with one of the shows for âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, and for the play, he gave up this rare opportunity.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, actors rehearsing.
Plays do not earn as much as dramas and movies, no matter how popular the celebrity is, the profits from plays will never match up with the value of the drama, an actorâs rehearsal fee for âA Dream Like A Dreamâ is 100RMB a day, but all of the actors cooperated seriously.
Huang Lu said, sometimes we would joke that we âmissed money making opportunitiesâ, but everyone felt that this was especially fine, it was rare that we had a whole year to focus on doing one thing, the period where we practiced in Tangshan was very much like return to school.
âEveryone basically didnât come here for money,â Huang Lu said, she viewed âA Dream Like A Dreamâ as a rare opportunity, it was a training for acting, also like a chance for self improvement.
After the âA Dream Like A Dreamâ Wuhan Charity Show ended, Huang Lu came to the front lobby for a photo.
Every actor gave their best performance.
Newly added actress for Young Gu Xianglan, Ge Xinyi, worked hard to match her senior; seasoned actress Feng Xianzhen controlled her character with grace and power, all 3 Gu Xianglan had an overall soul; Zhang Liang performed a Baron who was different from Jin Shijieâs version, but it was still accurate and layered; Fu Xing as the representative of the original group, became the foundation, their steady and down-to-earth performance assisted every new actor in building up their steady and accurate system of performance.
After performing for 9 years, Xu Qing had already embodied the blood and soul of Gu Xianglan, she also followed the progress of the group, and participated in all of the practices. Wang Keran expressed his thanks to Xu Qing once in Tangshan, âI say I really thank you for appearing in the practice, because your every practice would always accurately complete every detail, even if it was the most basic practice, you always put your heart to it, never held back, completely constructing the character.â
Xu Qing constantly improved her performance, frequently discussing how to handle every word with Wang Keran, for example after Baron had his car accident, Gu Xianglan would run up hurriedly to the police to say âI saw your incompetenceâ that kind of transition scenes, she would repeatedly try different expressions, after 9 years of âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, she is still pondering over it repeatedly, searching for the best method to handle every detail.
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, Xu Qing and Zhang Liang during rehearsal.
During the rehearsal in Wuhan, Yuli Studio also witnessed how Xu Qing gave all of her emotions in every rehearsal, especially the important scene where Gu Xianglan took off her Cheongsam and walked through the lotus pond in sleeping garments, everytime Xu Qing finished that performance, her eyes would be filled with tears.
Xu Qing told Wang Keran one sentence later, and hoped that he would share that with the new actors, âJust tell them this point, 1 minute onstage, 9 years of effort offstage.â
Theater people always had this persistence in idealism and passion for the stage, with so much interest in âA Dream Like A Dreamâ this time round, Wang Keran hoped that with this play, more audiences would understand plays and love plays.
He especially prepared a live broadcast after the charity show ended, so that people beyond that 1200 audiences could see âA Dream Like A Dreamâ, hear the words from the actorsâ hearts, he hoped that the other actors besides Xu Qing and Xiao Zhan would also be noticed.
âI know that the rules of news broadcast, if it wasnât live broadcast, you would definitely cut away the people who werenât important, right, but I hoped that everybody could see everyoneâs effort. Xu Qing, Xiao Zhan, they were also very happy to have this method, I think that this is also a faith in collaboration equality built upon plays for them.â
âA Dream Like A Dreamâ would continue to tour 9 cities, Wang Keran hoped that through this play, it would encourage more youths to enter theaters, âI had this thought a long time ago, I just needed to find the right opportunity. For all of our lives we had hoped that plays would have more influence, could have more people entering theaters, if this worked out, then actors and actresses such as Xu Qing, Xiao Zhan, Zhang Liang etc, would have great contribution.â

When Inko was fifteen, her aunt pulled her to the side and handed her a photo. The photo featured her as a little baby, green hair showing above her head, dressed in a little jumper with a pacifier in her mouth. Sheâs being held awkwardly by a blond boy with big blue eyes, a big grin across his face.
âWhoâs this?â She asked her aunt, curious.
âYour brother.â Her aunt told her.
âWhat?â Inko asked. She looked at the photo again. âIs⌠what happened?â She asked her aunt, clutching it in her hand.
âYour parents waited for his Quirk. He didnât have one.â Her aunt told her, blunt. Her auntâs hands were threaded together, clutching each other. âThey didnât like that.â
â... but they work with Quirkless Discrimination agencies. They donate money toâŚâ Inko began but her mind began clicking, thinking.
Her fatherâs slight sneer when talking about Quirkless people when they were home, just the family. Her motherâs muttering about donating money being a pain.
â... theyâre pretending.â She whispered. Her aunt nodded.
âThey are. Its status, itâs trendy. Pretending you arenât a bigot.â Her aunt shrugged. Inko didnât want to believe. She gave the photo back anyway when her aunt asked her.
She had to talk to them.

âYOUâRE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF LIARS!â She screamed at her father. âHe was my brother-â
âHe was useless to us!â Her father snapped. âQuirkless- worth nothing in the long run. Your useless Quirk at least makes you a viable bride-â
âGO TO HELL!â She screamed and ran up to her room.
âCalm down, sheâll understand. He wasnât worth it.â
Screw that. She grabbed her cell phone and called her aunt.
âAuntie, can you bring your truck?â
 âOf course.â
It didnât take long for Inko to pack up what she needed. She ignored the knocking of her mother when it happened and she waited.
 Her aunt showed up.
âHaruka! Why are you here?â She heard from downstairs and came down, carrying a few bags.
âThe rest are upstairs. I refuse to be in a house of hypocrites.â Her parents didnât like it, yelling she was overreacting.
Her threat to tell everyone the truth about her brother had them letting her go.
Maybe she was overreacting. Maybe. She thought so the moment she got in her auntâs big grey truck, the one she used to deliver things. She looked to the front door where her parents were glaring at her aunt who stood with her arms crossed.
Her tall aunt, blonde hair hanging down her back, like her brotherâs, Inkoâs father. She was tall, tough. Inko looked up to her. Ever since she was a little kid and her aunt had thrown her father into a wall when heâd dared hit Inko.
âYou treat your kid right or Iâll hurt you.â Sheâd threatened.
Inko blinked, mind going to many incidents in her life where her aunt had stepped in to stop them from hurting Inko. Where her aunt had told her to not listen to her mother who picked at her appearance, where her aunt had snuck her food when her mother forced her into a diet. Where her aunt had given her money and helped her open a bank account her parents had no control over and had fought with her parents who tried to demand she give them the information. Â
Sitting in the truck, she realized that maybe⌠the fact they would do that, lie like that⌠that was the final straw.

Living with her aunt was different. Inko found herself smiling more. Her aunt had a sense of humour that encouraged loud laughter. She never made Inko do anything she didnât want and even let her drop out of some clubs that her parents had made her go to.
Inko found herself happy for the first time in a long time as she and her aunt tried to find out how to find her brother.
It was hard though. The files werenât kept and her parents had given up all custody and signed multiple forms. As well, it had been fourteen years back.
Then her aunt got sick. Very sick.
âCancer,â the doctors told her. âPancreatic- most likely from all the chemicals she transported over the years.â
Pancreatic. Even in the 23 century, it was impossible to cure. Medical research in cancer and other such diseases had tapered off when Quirks became a thing. More focus was on that for a good fifty years or so. Then after that more focus was on other sorts of diseases brought around by Quirks or researching how to help people affected by Quirks.
âIâm not dying until youâre old enough to be an adult.â Her aunt grunted when Inko asked her how she was feeling. âEighteen kiddo.â She bared her teeth. âGotta hold on.â
Inko was eighteen and just finally finished high school when her aunt died. Her aunt had been living at home still, stubborn and refusing to go to hospice.
Inko came home after a night out after graduating high school to find her dead.
The funeral was a hard affair, her parents at least respectful enough to not start anything until after when they tried to get her to move back in with them.
âI was already accepted into university and will be living in the dorms. As well I told them you are not allowed to ever call and change anything about my classes or living arrangements.â
They were so mad and she got a call from the dorm manager who told her that theyâd had several calls from them within a week. Each time demanding she not be allowed to room there or threatening them.
None worked. Inko ended up cutting off contact with some help from a friend she made in a study group, Midoriya Hisashi. He was so handsome and kind. He also understood her struggles.
âI grew up in the foster system for a good portion of my life. I got adopted at fourteen and⌠they werenât good. Obsessed with the idea of being my parents, burning things I had of my biological parents. They were the sort of abusers who were kind, the ones you donât realize are hurting you.â
It was like Inko and her own. She didnât know their controlling behaviours, their actions were abuse.
Not until her aunt and her brother.
Soon after a few heart to hearts, they started dating, something that her roommate Mitsuki loved.
âHeâs freaking handsome, you go girl!â
When Inko graduated with a degree in culinary arts, Hisashi proposed while heading to law school.
They got married the summer after. During that time though they discovered that Hisashiâs adopted parents died. Inko made the choice to try and let her own parents back into her life because she saw how much it hurt him.
âHeâs so nice honey-â Her mother said when they got in, stopping at seeing one of the photos in their apartment. Her and her brother.
Inko kept an eye on her mother after that, right up to the time she caught the woman trying to take it down.
 âStop it!â
âHeâs not your brother heâs some    thing-   â Inko didnât let her say another word and shoved her out.
She didnât talk to them again.
âPlease donât regret it,â Hisashi told her.
 âI wonât,â Inko told him.
She continued to look for her brother, her husband helping. But it was hard. Harder, even more, when she became pregnant at age 28, just when Hisashi was finishing law school. They took a break, Inko going on maternity leave from the bakery she was working at.
She gave birth to a perfect little boy she loved dearly. Hisashi loved him too, even as his work became demanding. Being part of a heroâs legal team was hard after all. Especially a destructive one like the Empire who could cause earthquakes by accident.
Mitsuki already had a son named Katskii herself and the two hoped their sons would become friends, and it looked like they would though Inko worried. Katsuki was a headstrong little boy who seemed to love bossing others around. He was sometimes mean to Izuku and his meanness was cruel in ways she knew could cause problems.
Mitsuki at least also saw it. But her own parenting didnât work well.
âMy parents used to slap me around,â she told Inko blankly. âMy dad once held my head underwater for a minute because I pissed him off. I⌠I try you know? But⌠whereâs the line?â
âMy parents controlled every aspect of my life. They would force me on diest when I was already too thin, would go through my emails and phone. My dad hit me too, but my aunt⌠she stepped in each time.â Inko told her back. They both knew already, but it was nice to talk about.
When her son, Izuku, was four though she sat in a doctorâs office and heard the worst discussion of Quirklessness in her life.
âThat test hasnât been allowed to diagnose Quirklessness for twenty-years!â she shouted at the doctor. âBlood test, now!â The doctor was pissed and refused so she stomped out with her son, making sure each parent in the waiting room knew the doctor was using outdated medical information before rescheduling an appointment with a different doctor.
Inko was darkly pleased that Dr. Tsubasa ended up being reprimanded and forced to take more classes. There was some issue with his grandson but his parents dealt with that.
Yet, when the blood tests came back, Izuku was diagnosed as Quirkless.
âHe has no Quirk himself, though we believe any child he has with a Quirked individual will have a much more powerful Quirk than their other parent.â the doctor said. He was nicer at least. Izuku was so fragile, so small about this as they went home. He watched his favourite hero video, Inko watching from the door to the office.
â...Mama, can I be a hero too?â little Izuku said. Inko felt like breaking down. She didnât think so. Izuku was so small, so little. And she had never heard about a Quirkless hero. But then she thought of her brother.
âI donât know sweetie,â she finally admitted. She walked up to him and knelt down, hugging him. âBut⌠I think you can do your best.â It wasnât enough and she knew it but she also knew too well the Quirkless statistics.
That was the first night she told Izuku about her brother. She showed him the picture and explained.
âI wonât be like my parents,â she promised him. And she wouldnât. Hisashi promised as well, and the two worked hard to make sure he was happy.
Inko did eventually go back to work when Izuku was five, hoping and praying her son would be okay.
She knew he was lying when he came home with ruined clothes and claimed it was all accidents. She knew he was lying when he tried to claim he was okay. But she couldnât do anything. Not without actual proof.
She hoped Katsuki was helping her son.
She had a terrible feeling he wasnât.

Inko and Hisashi began talking about opening a cafe when Izuku was six. The little boy was all for it, offering ideas and his own thoughts. They were happy. Inko still looked for her brother but she had accepted it might never happen. Izuku dreamed of being a hero. Hisashi was doing well at work.
 And thenâŚ
Empire accidentally destroyed his own agency. Lost control.
 Hisashi didnât make it.
The large payout from the agency plus the Hero Public Safety Commission was enough for Inko to not have to work for years if they were careful.
It didnât fix a single thing.
Inko would admit she lost herself for a year, completely unable to think or do anything. She wandered her apartment blankly.
It took her son hiding a broken wrist from her to snap her out of it. She was horrified and she marched into the school to scream at them. She listed exactly what she knew about anti-Quirkless Discrimination laws, and what she could do to them.
Izuku stopped being hurt that bad. But emotional abuse from his peers and teachers was harder to figure out.
Inko began to work on the cafe again, as well as she began helping out at rallies on anti-Quirkist ideas. Inko also made sure Izuku knew he could go to her no matter what, but also tried not to be her parents. She tried not to butt in at any time and let him live his own life.
As he got older she wondered if she should try more. If her hands-off approach was as bad as her own parentâs actions to her.
But she was terrified. She didnât want to be them.
Inko watched as her son got older, as he got more secretive and worried. She tried to get him into programs but each time she was refused. Or they would let him go but then stop, saying he kept having people come and harass him.
âThen why is it his fault?â she asked them. They shrugged.
It was just easier to get rid of him than others. Izuku got very quiet after that and stopped wanting to do extra things.
She worried and worried and she would look at the photo of her brother. She wondered if the worry she had would be for him as well. If she had grown up with an older brother who was hated, who had to fight to be respected by anyone.
She was pretty sure sheâd be more of a mess.
She also imagined though, a tall man coming in to help with Izuku. Who would help fight against the school. Who would be with her through the death of Hizashi.
She often stared at the photograph of her and her brother, wondering what if.
The cafe she started had a copy of the photograph and any person making any Quirkist comments was thrown out in seconds. She provided a safe space for everyone, and she found that by doing so she got a lot of customers from people who struggled to find a place in society.
It attracted other attention to, including a man she was fairly certain was an underground hero who came in with a black jumpsuit, getting the darkest coffee. He was a nice enough man though, and Inko found herself enjoying conversations with him. Mostly about cats or his loud friend she wanted to tell him was hitting on him.
When a loud man came in asking for the âregular coffee orderâ for the jumpsuit guy she stared him down.
âAsk him out, weâre all done with his pining.â The man spluttered. âHe talks about you nonstop. I donât know his name, he pays with cash. He has mentioned you though enough I can recognize you on site. Ask him out please.â
Shuichi, one of the cafe workers snorted. âWeâre all done. Please just date him already.â The lizard-like teen continued to work while the blonde spluttered but did leave with the regular coffee and an order for himself.
A week later both showed up, holding hands.
âYay! The pinning is over!â Shuichi said from where he was trying to help Izuku with math, his angry mutters about how the teachers were purposely fudging his grades making Inko plan another trip to the school to threaten them.
âYay!â Izuku laughed, the nine-year-old grinning at the nasty look he got. âYou donât scare me. I saw you sneak a cat in here in your scarf.â
Inko found herself laughing harder than ever that night, and the two- Shouta and Hizashi- became friends of the family.
As time continued to tick by, even with moments like the one where she made friends with the two she kept worrying. As Izuku got more and more nervous about school, as she saw scars he kept claiming she was mistaken about. As Mitsuki began whispering her worries over her son and how the school seemed to not worry over his anger or his attitude, as they seemed to ignore it.
She tried to talk to him but didnât know what to do. She felt lost.
Then, he was fourteen and came home with a smile on his face and a spark in his eyes. He spoke happily and told her of his plan to start working out soon. She smiled and told him she was proud. It was March, nearing the end of his second year of middle school and she was happy he was happy.
A week into his spring vacation, he opened the door to the apartment holding the hand of a tall blonde man. She frowned.
âIzuku?â she asked him before she got a good look at the man. Her eyes widened at seeing that face.
 âMom⌠I found uncle Toshinori.â

Is Shuichi who you think it is? Yes. Originally I was like: this is just an AU where it just so happens All Might is Inkoâs brother but then my brain went: okay but- so Spinner is good in this AU as he managed to find a job with Inko and is the older brother figure to Izuku.
Hope you guys liked this! Next part would be a One Shot from All Might's perspective then we actually get the story-story from Izuku's!

iâll tell you i was wrong if you dance with me

a/n: communicate with your partners!!! also yeah this is the song from lady bird. itâs a banger
This seriously isnât happening.Â
You never fight with Travis. Communication comes easy between the two of you, but you also make it a priority to talk about your feelings. It keeps things from boiling over; both of you are known to unleash wicked tempers on occasion and have found being direct stops issues from occuring. Arguments still occasionally happen, but theyâre typically over trivial things like what movie to watch or where youâre spending the holidays. Travis apparently forgot about the fact you talk to each other about things.Â
Heâd been upset when he came home from practice, but you were pretty sure he was fine after he woke up from his pre-game nap. Knowing heâs a superstitious person and has a lot of pressure on him to put up points, you had made the choice not to ask about what was bothering him. Throwing off his routine could have detrimental consequences. Tonight's game is tighter than it should have been, but the Flyers come out on top. Travis spends a bit more time in the penalty box than you would have liked, but everyone was getting chippy by the start of the third period. Claude tries to talk to him on the bench but he gets shut down. Whatever Travis was upset about before is still clearly bothering him, and itâs affecting his game.Â
Youâre following Travis home from the game, and can tell heâs uptight from the way heâs gripping the steering wheel. As you wind through downtown Philadelphia you try and prepare yourself for any bomb that could drop. Chances are that when you reach your apartment things will explode. Maybe itâs nothing; Travis is fine and just wants to be a responsible driver for once. You pull into the free spot beside his car and see him walking towards the elevator, suit jacket balled up and tucked under his arm. This wonât be good. Trying to buy yourself some time, you take the stairs. Seven flights later you arrive outside your door; he left it unlocked, which gives you a sliver of hope things will be fine.Â
âDo you want to talk about whatâs bothering you?â you call into the darkness of the apartment. Your sneakers are left at the door and to retreat towards the bedroom, looking for a sign of life. You find one in the bathroom: the light is on. A gentle push on the door reveals your boyfriend is in the shower and ignoring you.Â
âTrav?â
âYeah,â he huffs, words muffled by him tossing his head back to rinse the shampoo of his hair. Apparently the shower isnât as relaxing as he had hoped.Â
You donât bother to tread lightly, upset that heâs acting like a child. âYouâre being an asshole. I get that you had a bad day, but you canât take it out on me. I just want to help.â
Travis turns the water off suddenly. âCanât help if youâre the problem,â he scoffs.Â
His statement doesnât make sense. Youâve done nothing out of the ordinary the past couple of days; nothing that would warrant the behaviour youâre receiving. âWhat do you mean?â
Shouldering passed you to exit the room, Travis doesnât bother to respond. Youâre beyond frustrated: partners in healthy relationships communicate, not show emotions like grade schoolers. âYouâre not giving me the fucking silent treatment Travis. You gotta talk to me.â The bedroom is dark when you enter and you flick the overhead light on to see better.
âYou really donât know?â
âOf course I donât know,â you seethe. âIf I did know we wouldnât be in this predicament because weâd be solving the issue.â
The glare you receive is sharp enough to cut stone. He pulls on a t-shirt, anger clear in the aggression he does it with. âWhy did I have to find out from Carter that youâve been getting coffee with your TA?â
Youâre shocked. In no way is it what he thinks it is. âYouâve got to be fucking kidding me,â you sigh, upset that Travis would take someone elseâs words at face value and not talk to you about it.Â
âIâm dead fucking serious Y/N. You preach communication, but it looks as though youâre the one who hasnât been doing enough talking.â
The room around you starts to spin. You canât comprehend what heâs insinuating. âWait, you think Iâm cheating on you?â you ask. There has been a gross miscommunication error somewhere; never in a million years would you think of having an affair.
âI didnât say that.â
âWell what the fuck did you say?â
Travis tugs at the roots of his hair in frustration. He doesnât answer immediately, pacing the length of the bed a few times. âI justââ he struggles to articulate his words. âI just said that youâre being a bit hypocritical, donât you think? Youâre standing here yelling at me because I didnât voice my concerns, but you havenât been talking to me about whatâs going on in your life.â Travisâ tone is sharp, and it stings.Â
Itâs your turn to show how upset you are. Your hands curl into fists at your side, and you squeeze your nails into your palms before releasing them. âI do tell you what goes on in my life Travis,â your breathing ragged as you try to not lose your cool. âI ran into my TA at the coffee shop yesterday, and he paid for my drink because my card wouldnât work. Didnât think it was breaking news, sorry I donât send you every single fucking life update that happens. Whatâs gotten into you?â
âYou could have been cheating!âÂ
âBut I wasnât!â you scream, no longing caring about keeping up appearances. You canât believe Travis would think that. It hurts. âAnd I never would! You know thisâ
He turns his back to you, like it pains him to look at you, but you donât understand why. You're not the one suggesting infidelity. âThatâs it? Thatâs all youâve got to say?â he seethes.Â
âThatâs all there is to say! Thereâs nothing to explain, no secret to uncover. Iâm not in the wrong here.â
âAnd you think I am?â
You look at Travis like he has three heads. âAre you serious? Youâre the one whoâs so fucking upset over a situation that could have happened to literally anyone.â Your tone suggests that youâre exhausted with the conversation, and Travis gets the hint.Â
He slinks towards the door, still visibly angry. âIâll take the couch tonight,â he grits out before tightly gripping the doorknob and shutting the door with more force than needed.Â
The bed doesnât look appealing, full of much happier memories, but fighting with Travis has knocked any and all energy out of you. You gingerly pull back the covers and slip underneath. Tears trickle down your cheek as you toss and turn, trying to fall into some sort of slumber. However, your mind has other ideas, replaying the blowout. You canât begin to understand why Travis is so bothered by the instance, and more importantly why it caused him to disregard a fundamental part of your relationship. Thereâs little movement from beyond the door, but you can hear the faint noise of a Johnny Cash record playing from the speakers in the living room. After hours of staring at the ceiling your eyes close and a fitful sleep follows.Â
You might have gotten nine hours of sleep, but you wake up feeling exhausted. Fighting with anyone drains you, but fighting with Travis is especially terrible because it rarely happens. There doesnât seem to be any movement from the other side of the door; maybe heâs still asleep. You refrain from heading into the kitchen, unsure of what will happen if you see him. After nearly twenty minutes you canât wait any longer to start your day and pad into the main living space. Itâs empty: no sign that Travis has been there for many hours. Guess you donât have to immediately deal with the fallout of last night.Â
A post-it note is tacked onto the fridge handle and your heart skips a beat. In Travisâ chicken scratch it reads Iâll see you at the gala tonight. Weâve got media all day and I wonât be back in time for us to go together. Thereâs no mention of the fight, and you canât judge from a two sentence note whether or not heâs still pissed off.Â
âFuck,â you groan. âThe gala.â Tonightâs the annual Flyers Give Back gala, and youâre expected to be in attendance. Itâs not even a charity event; the organization is offering a chance for business men to chat up the players in hopes they continue to donate. You find things like these unbearable and tedious, but Travis does his best to make them enjoyable. Not knowing what page youâre on with him is going to be terrible. Thereâs a pretty good chance heâll ignore you if heâs still upset.Â
As if someone is reading your mind, the better halves group chat starts to explode. Everyone is chattering excitedly about tonight, and under normal circumstances youâd be excited to see them in such a relaxed setting. Itâs been a while youâve all hung out, but you canât find yourself to contribute to the conversation. You mute the notifications and do your best to move on with your day. The rest of the morning is spent working on your thesis; mind numbing work that almost makes you forget about everything that happened in the past twenty-four hours. Once youâve hit an acceptable word count for the day you shutdown your computer and make lunch.Â
The grilled cheese sandwich you eat while watching a John Mulaney comedy special fulfills your appetite but doesnât curb your dread. You decide to call your sister, hoping she can be a welcome distraction. Dialling her number you sink further into the couch cushions, wrapping yourself tightly with a blanket so that only your head is poking out. âWhatâs up?â she asks, and you hear her shuffle in the background, presumably to move somewhere more private. It isnât normal for you to call her unannounced.Â
You hold it together for approximately two seconds. The tears start and they donât stop. Every emotion youâve felt since getting home last night comes to the surface, and before you know it youâre sobbing into the receiver.Â
âWoah, slow down,â she says. âY/N, take some deep breaths.â When your breathing returns to a somewhat regular level she continues speaking. âWhat happened?â
It takes you nearly twenty minutes to tell the whole story because youâre so distraught. No detail is spared, and you go back much farther than is probably needed. You recount what happened after yesterdayâs practice, pretty much the entire game, and the fight that followed. âI just donât know what brought this on,â you sniffle. âWe donât fight, we talk about things. Iâm not sure if Iâm more upset at what he insinuated or at the fact he broke a cardinal rule.â
Your sister sighs, and you hear her breath fan in slight annoyance. Youâre worked up about something kinda stupid, you know, but you canât let it slide. âItâs probably a bit of both. So, what are you going to do?â
âWhat can I do? I know that we need to talk about what happened, but a public event is not the best place to do that. I also canât not show up or ask Trav to ditch in order to figure this out. We have to be there.â
âSounds like youâve got it figured out then.â
You really donât. âWhat happens if he ignores me the entire night?â
She laughs and tells you to not to anything stupid, and to take your mind off of things tells you a story about your nephew eating dirt. It does the trick; youâre momentarily distracted and forget about Travis. You talk for a while longer before she has to go. âMiles is crying, will you be okay if I let you go?â
Itâs your turn to laugh. âIâll be fine,â you insist. A glance at the clock tells you itâs time to start getting ready. âIâve gotta shower and start the process. Beauty is time consuming you know.â
Against your better judgement you open your text messages to see if thereâs anything from Travis. His text thread is the same as it was yesterday and youâre disappointed. You had hoped that maybe heâd get bored between interviews and check in. With no new notifications you exit out of the application and pull up a playlist you hope will brighten your mood. The steam from the shower relaxes your tense muscles and warms you up. Itâs comforting in the way a cocoon is; you practically have to drag yourself out of the bathtub.Â
Your bedroom is cold and doesnât offer the same respite as the bathroom. The music continues to float in from the hallway, and you allow yourself to get lost in it. Itâs been a while since you danced around your room; it worked to cure sadness when you were a teenager. Hopefully the magic hasnât worn off. You flail your arms, not caring how silly you look since no one is here to see you anyways, and scream along at the top of your lungs. After a few songs you feel better and return to the task at hand. The dress code is labelled as âblack tieâ on the invitation, but that isnât what youâre worried about. You own a million dresses for situations like this after being with Travis for so long. You donât know what he packed to wear, and thereâs a decent chance youâll be pushed together for photos. Clashing colours will look terrible.
A quick glance through his side of the closest leaves you no clues, so you decide to be as literal as possible. Black is a flattering colour and works well with every colour combination. Thereâs a jumpsuit hanging in the back that catches your eye and you think itâs the perfect choice. After pulling it on you move back into the bathroom to do your hair and makeup. Everything is natural and relaxed; once again for the sake of potential photos. The clock strikes on the hour and you realize itâs time to leave. A pair of heels are slipped on and you order an Uber before locking the apartment and heading to the lobby. You had thought about driving yourself, but on the occasion that things donât end well with Travis youâll probably have more than a couple of drinks.Â
The entire way to the venue your leg bounces up and down. Itâs been years since youâve been this nervous about being around the team. Youâve been with Travis for a few seasons now, and the organization has become a second family to you. No one is going to know about the fight and you worry theyâre going to talk about your solo arrival. The outside of the convention centre is sharply decorated, and your driver lets out a low whistle at the extravagance of it all. âThank you so much,â you gush, and exit the car. Thankfully no photographers are set up outside, and you dart inside without being seen.Â
Once in the main event space, you scan for the bar. Thereâs no sign of Travis, which should make you more relaxed but doesnât. What if there was an accident on the way to the venue? You have no idea where he was all or who he came with. Overthinking distracts you from your original goal, leaving you standing aimlessly in the middle of the room.Â
âYou look like you might need one of these,â Ryanne chuckles, handing you a champagne flute. You gladly accept and down it in two gulps. âHoly shit.â
âYeah,â you sigh, eyes scanning to see if your boyfriend has made an appearance.Â
She sees right through your facade of calm and wraps you in a tight hug. âWhatâs going on?â
For a second time today you explain what happened last night. Thereâs no judgement from Ryanne as there might have been from your sister because she understands. Dating a professional athlete isnât easy; things like this happen much more frequently than youâd expect. Perhaps itâs all the time spent apart that makes the occasional lapse in communication so apparent. She listens quietly, full attention on you. To your credit you donât cry this time, slightly more numb to the situation to due more time passing. It still hurts a tremendous amount.Â
âHeâll come around,â Ryanne insists. âTK is a little moronic sometimes, but heâd never jeopardize his relationship with you. Youâre quite literally the most important thing in his life.â
âI know. Iâm just upset because the whole thing could have been avoided.â
She offers you a sympathetic smile. âI know.â Ryanne links her arm through yours. âLetâs go find something to snack on.â
You spend most of the night with Ryanne, and occasionally Claude when he can get away from the hot-shot businessmen. Travis eventually came in, flanked by Nolan, but was immediately pulled into the politics of the night. The two of you occasionally sneak glances at each other and you tell heâs uncomfortable. You can only hope it isnât because of your presence. Itâs nearing eleven; the party has become a much more relaxed affair, and the DJ is playing sappy love songs in an attempt to get the media team some good photo ops. An intern asks the Girouxâs if theyâll dance for an instagram story and they both look hesitant. âGo on guys, Iâll be fine,â you reassure. Itâs the subtle push they need to enjoy a quiet moment together.Â
As if he can sense youâre lonely and feel out of place, Travis approaches you. Itâs tentative, like heâs petrified youâll turn him away, but he comes regardless. Drinks are in each of his hands and he extends one to you. When you donât take it he sets it on the table behind you. âHi,â he says sheepishly, fiddling with something in his pocket.Â
âHi Travis.â Youâre determined not to let his presence crack your resolve; last night illuminated a big issue and it needed to be dealt with. Itâs proving to be difficult because he bumps a shoulder against yours and all you can think of is kissing him senseless.Â
The song changes to a Bruce Springsteen ballad, and you recognize it instantly. It played at the coffee shop on your first date with Travis all those years ago. One look at him tells you this isnât an accident, that he had requested it specifically for the two of you. âDance with me?â
You sigh deeply, looking him in the eyes. âTrav, this isnât going to magically fix things.â
âI know, baby, I know,â he pleads. âI fucked up so bad last night because I was being an idiot. I wrote down everything I would do differently if I had a time machine, look.â A hand reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out a piece of paper filled with his nearly illegible print. âJust one dance, and then we can go home and talk about it like I should have suggested in the first place. Let me know weâre still okay.â
If you hadnât been in public youâre sure Travis would have been in tears. Itâs not necessarily a good look to cry in front of hundreds of sponsors. He has a reputation as the goofy boy who takes no shit to uphold. âYou have a lot of talking ahead of you,â you say, and let him drag you onto the dance floor. theatre club au time!!! iâm back with the romeo and juliet edition of âeurydicees just write the fucking fic instead of daydreaming about itâÂ
theatre club au hcs are also here: part one and part two!!Â
disclaimer: there was absolutely no editing nor proofreading here, iâm watching romeo + juliet and havenât read the real script in years, and i really donât know what iâm talking about
so. for the fall show, one year, they decide to do romeo and juliet, because obviously, you know?Â
renge directs, kyoya is her stage manager
hikaru is romeo, haruhi is juliet; tamaki is mercutio, kaoru is benvolio; idk about the rest of the cast, letâs pretend they donât matter for the sake of this list (filing the rest of the cast list under: problems for when i actually write this stupid fic)Â
honey is on lighting, mori is on set and stage combat, mei is on props and costumes, kasanoda is on soundÂ
so in the ouran theatre club, thereâs not really a big rivalry between techies and actors because thereâs only a few of them, so they all switch between roles so often (ex. kaoru is 50% actor and 50% costumes; tamaki is 50% actor, 50% director)Â
HOWEVER. then, right before the fall production of r&j, hikaru says some dumbass comment about actors having more work to do than techies, and being more important, etc. etc. some bullshit like that
and this causes a HUGE rift in between the techies and the actors for this show specificallyâ theyâre all mad at each other bc of this comment; kaoru is pissed at his brother, kyoya thinks that tamaki endorsed said comment, hikaru isnât sure why he said it in the first place, haruhi thinks this is all ridiculous but kaoru is being an asshole about it and so theyâre mad at him; etc. etc.Â
so this show is uh. not coming together very well, because no half wants to work with the other half, and none of them are talking to each otherÂ
then. THEN. THEN. THEN.Â
tamaki and kyoya fall in love.Â
they start a secret affair together, telling no one, because they know that everyone in the club is mad at everyone else, and saying that theyâre dating is just gonna add fuel to the fire, especially bc itâs an actor/sm relationship, which is a bit weird (itâs high school, though, so whatever. once this all blows over, theyâll be a #powercouple)Â
things come to a head during one rehearsal, where theyâre doing mercutioâs death sceneÂ
so tamaki is acting. heâs going all out. like. heâs giving this speech as if itâs the last performance heâll ever give. itâs brilliant. beautiful. stan.Â
and when heâs done, mei makes some comment about it âneeding lights to make it look any good,â as if he canât make it good on his own, and tamaki is so hurt by this. like. so hurt.Â
renge calls for the end of rehearsal, bc hikaru is abt to like. go to war in defense of tamakiâs acting, and kaoru is just mad at hikaru, so heâs also ready to argue (bc theyâre at a good enough place in their relationship to do that!!!)Â
kyoya, in an attempt to cheer him up, brings tamaki out for dinner, but they have to be discreet, so they go to some commoner place. this is where all the pining Hits. then they finally, finally, actually start dating.Â
as we go through the rehearsal and production meeting process, the scenes that they rehearse are interspersed with fluffy scenes of tamakyo falling in love, idk how all that would get worked in right, but it would make it in there because fuck it, yk?Â
the rivalry was kind of simmering for a while, but then they doing their stop and go rehearsal, which is always an rip, but here itâs the first time in a hot sec that the entire production team and the actors are in the same roomÂ
the actors keep goofing off and moving around, so honey canât get things quite where he needs them; the actors are talking loudly, so kasanoda is fucked (but too shy to say something abt it, until mori tells honey, who tells renge, who stands up for them all)
and a (verbal) fight breaks outâ kyoya, the eversuffering sm is losing his mind over here.Â
he is done with this shitÂ
so he calls hold, and renge gives a speech about cooperation, and then everyone kind of shuts down. no on is having fun with being in theatre anymore. kasanoda is two insults away from quitting. mei is two broken seams away from physically fighting someone.Â
things are not going wellÂ
after rehearsal, tamaki and kyoya have their standing secret date night at some commonerâs place, idk where yet, weâll figure that out when this actually gets written as a fic, and then. thatâs when they get caught.Â
itâs renge who finds themâ and sheâs angry. she goes on this whole rant about professionalism. the stage manager cannot be dating an actor. itâs a conflict of interest. itâs unprofessional. itâs scandalous. she will not have it in her theatre.Â
then tamaki points out. that she is here on a date with haruhi.Â
fuckinâ hypocrite.Â
the four of them have a cute double date bc fuck it. i make the rules now. and they realize that this is bullshit and theyâre never going to pull together a show if they keep on arguing like this
but they donât really know how to fix it????Â
it eventually kind resolves itself when renge, who cannot keep a secret for the life of her, accidentally reveals that she and haruhi are datingâ theyâre in the dressing room, and renge just kisses them, not realizing that kaoru and mei are arguing over kaoruâs costume in there
everyone is very upset for a moment, until they crack because kaoru and mei are both kinda hopeless romantics, and a star-crossed love is exactly what they needed to make the show come together
meanwhile, tamaki and hikaru are practicing mercutioâs queen mab monologue (for the #drama of the moment), and kyoya is taking notes or w/e, and when they pause, hikaru asks abt tamakiâs inspiration for his acting and what feelings heâs drawing onÂ
and tamaki is just like *looks at kyoya* âi have my own loveâÂ
iâm gonna be honest i super worked myself into a hole here and i have absolutely no idea how to end this
unlike shakespeare, i cannot kill off all the characters in order to have a resolution to my workÂ
taking suggestions for an ending i guess. anything would be better than whatever this mess is rn
#theatre club au#ohshc#ouran high school host club#tamakyo#harurenge#god this is a mess#the ending is so cheesy and i hate it#but i suffered through these thoughts so you fuckers have to suffer through reading them

The plan was simple, really.
Pretend to be boyfriends and find the bane of your existence so you could rub it in his face that he was much more disposable than he made you feel. Then youâd both get the hell out of there and go someplace you both actually enjoyed. It was easy to do, too. Pretending to be together was something you had done when one of the other had problems with strangers. Finding your ex was an easier task because all you had to look for is where there was an influx of vulnerable girls.
Apparently, this plan was simple only in theory.
Realistically speaking, as you and Iwa fail to wade through the many drunk people flailing their limbs and calling it dancing, finding your ex was not an easy task.
The other part of the plan was also much more difficult than either of you expected too. Pretending was not easy. It was not easy when either of you couldnât ignore the beating of your hearts at close contact. It was not easy when everyone readily acknowledged that you were together; that it was normal for Iwaizumi Hajime and Y/N L/N to be together. It was not easy when pretending reminded both of you that this was fake and that reality will sink in much sooner than the way next week came.
âFinally!â Someone would say, âWeâve been waiting for you two to get together!â Then a drunk acquaintance would add, âI thought you were together this whole time!â
So, sure, making it seem like you two were together was easy. But pretendingâ oh dear lord, just pretendingâ was what made it difficult. It had become apparent to both of you, without the other knowing, that just pretending hurt so much.
âJust how much did everyone drink? I heard the party started an hour ago,â You sigh, cringing when you see the class valedictorian puking her guts out by the plant.
Iwa snorts as he fixes his grip on your waist, âJust let the bunch of idiots let loose. The sem ended after all, puddinâ.â Only a mere squeak comes out of your mouth because of the way his soft lips neared your ears.
God damn. Was it really necessary to gay panic in the middle of a mission?
With no answer to the hypothetical question in your head, you decided to let the energy die out a little before you commence part two of the plan. You and Iwa find solace in the comfort of an unoccupied booth but you couldnât sit still at all.
The thought of being close to Iwa tonight felt different. It made you giddy and nervous and flustered and anxious all at once. It was like having to hold your breath and close your eyes to prepare for the âbig thingâ to happen. And you were too scared to find out what the âbig thingâ was for you so, despite much reluctance, you said, âIâm gonna get a drink, Zumi.â
You hastily got out of the booth and made a beeline for the kitchen to look for any drink that was sealed or canned. As much as you wanted the confidence that being intoxicated gives you, youâd rather not be embarrassingly drunk while facing your ex. In your quest to find something safe to drink in a college party, your acquaintances strike up a conversation.
âSo, you and Iwaizumi, huh?â The aforementioned drunk class valedictorian asked, surprisingly still able to make a conversation despite feeling unwell just a few moments ago. âBeen a long time coming,â she continued when you nodded, âYou two are made for each other, yâknow?â
You two hear a sigh from Claireâs, the drunkard valedictorian, friend beside her. âHow romantic⌠I still remember how the whole âpuddingâ nickname started. We honestly thought youâve been dating ever since then.â
Claire looks at you questioningly, as if mentally asking you to relay the story to her because she was probably piss drunk when it happened; I mean, sheâs still drunk right now but she was far worse back then.
You give in before they start to get the idea of gathering more and more people to make you tell the story. âItâs a weird story though,â You warn, but judging by the way they still urged you on, you could continue. âThere was a time in our first year when we had this party, right? By then, Iwa and I were, at most, acquaintances if not just roommates.â
âI didnât know how to like, interact with him because I found him so intimidating,â You smiled faintly, causing the two girls to look at each other quickly. âAnyway, everyone got challenged to eat as many diet pudding cups as we could possibly eatâ which was quite unhealthy considering weâre studying to become trainers.â
Claireâs friend snorts, reminiscing the day when your class bought out all the diet pudding cups available in the nearest convenience stores for a stupid game.
âI got really competitive about it to the point where only Iwa and I remained. Neither of us wanted to back down but everyone got concerned about the amount we ate so we were both crowned diet pudding cup championsâ
They giggle at the odd story but let you continue. âWe started calling each other âdiet pudding cup championâ after that but it was honestly a mouthful to say so somewhere down the line, it got shortened to âpuddingâ.â
âWhich is why we thought you two were a thing but you dated that asshole ex of yours and left us stumped,â Claire downs another bottle, âYou didnât even look comfortable with that ex and you two were never compatible, honestly. But all is well now! I wish I had love like yoursâŚâ
Claireâs friend rolls her eyes when the valedictorian starts crying, mumbling how cute you and Iwa were and that the entire class should be invited to your wedding. Claire then cries out how soft you two are for each other. âSorry for her nonsense,â Claireâs friend sighs, âAnyway, we shouldnât keep you for long⌠You should go back to your boyfriend.â
You wave slowly as they leave you to yourself and your thoughts. Was that really how people thought? That Iwa and you were a much better match? Would you have been far happier if Iwaizumi Hajime, your long-time best friend, was your boyfriend instead?
Speaking of your âboyfriendâ...
Iwaizumi was thankful you decided to part for a while. Had there not been distance between you two at that moment, he wasnât sure what mistake he wouldâve made. He was too scared to risk everything and find out too. Patiently, while rejecting the class drunkards who wanted to dance or drown in booze with him, Iwa waits for your return.
Iwaizumi Hajime was hopelessly, irretrievably in love with you. You were his idiot, his contradiction, his pudding, his everything, and sadly, just his best friend. How much did the universe have to hate him to bind you two to simply being best friends? How much did the universe have to hate him to let Iwaizumi Hajime get a taste of what couldâve been and deprive him of what would be? Why, of all people, did it have to be Iwaizumi Hajime who had to go through the turmoil of falling for his best friend?
Far too many questions have formed in his head but Iwaizumi persists. He still had to help you after all. So Iwa waits and waits and waits for your return while simultaneously having to deal with his realization and the universeâs hatred.
And the universe might have hated him more than it let on.
Yâknow what they say when you canât seem to find what youâre looking for specifically because youâre looking for it? How you should let time pass and that thing will magically pop up when you donât need it?
It happened.
In front of Iwaizumi stood the very person they planned to spite that night, the very person who decided it was fun to toy with your heart, and the very person who Iwaizumi loathed to the very core: Akuma Azamuku.
While you were questioning your âwhat could beâ with your pretend boyfriend, Iwaizumi was busy facing your bastard ex.
âI heard you two are together now,â The poor excuse of a man started, standing confidently as if he didnât have women in his arms, âKind of a fast development, donât âya think?â
Iwaizumi almost pulverized your ex to the ground at that statement. What a hypocrite. What a stupid guy. What a terrible person. To imply that you were the one who cheated when the God forsaken ex was the one who manipulated you into this chaos.
âFast development? What do you call yours then?â He challenged, eyebrows raised unamused at your ex.
âIâm not here to argue with you,â Akuma rolled his eyes rather condescendingly, âHe never had eyes for me anyway. The same way I never liked him one bit.â
Iwaizumiâs fingers twitched; they itched to close the distance between Akumaâs face and Iwaâs fist. You never liked him? What utter bullshit. You spent most of your days walking on eggshells to please the goddamn piece of shit and he tells him that you never liked your ex? He tells Iwa that he never liked you?
Sadly, Akuma took his silence as a sign to continue. Bad choice on his part, really.
âHe has always liked you though, hasnât he? You always had to be the man of the hour in Y/Nâs eyes when he and I were together. The son of a biââ
Then fist connected to face faster than anyone could have comprehended. Iwaizumi never liked your ex and his fists figured it was time to convey what he had been internalizing this whole time.
âYou donât get to talk that way. Not when it was you who two-timed him from the start,â Iwaizumiâs voice took a menacing tone. This was, by far, the scariest he had been: he wasnât spouting off in anger, his voice sounded hushed, but it was obvious that there would be carnage.
âYâknow,â Iwaizumi started, slowly walking up to Akuma who was keeling over in pain, âI didnât even hear the news from Y/N.â
âHe wanted to hide that you cheated on him from me because even if he didnât want to beat the shit out of you physically, he knew that I would.â Iwaizumi sat slowly to look at your ex eye-to-eye, death seen in his, âAnd he knows me so well.â
The girls in your exâs arms were long gone. All that was left to face the wrath of Iwaizumi Hajime was the poor excuse of a man who manipulated you, hurt you, and used you. Your ex wasnât going to go out of this party unscathed and everyone in their radar knew. Before his right knuckle could find its way to Akumaâs fear-stricken face, however, you had arrived.
âStop it, Hajime.â
The aforementioned male sighed, relaxed his posture, and complied. Iwaizumi walks towards you as his anger slowly dissipates. As much as Iwa wanted to do so much more to your ex, heâd rather not anger nor disappoint you. It was you who was involved in the chaos after all, not him. Iwa was there to back you up and if it meant that he had to restrain himself from getting revenge for your sake, he would do it. He would do anything for you.
Akuma visibly relaxed too, assuming that you stopped Iwaizumi because you wanted to save your ex. He got so cocky at your presence to the point that he thought it was a good idea to utter the words âJust a guard dog, eh?â when you and Iwa started to walk away.
You retaliated at the speed of light, snarling as you threw a heavy punch to your exâs disgusting face and successfully knocked the living daylights out of the spawn of Satan. Shocking everyone speechless, you looked your ex dead in the eyes and before leaving, you muttered, âGo to hell.â
Whether the mission was successful or not, neither you nor Iwa could tell. Yes, you were able to fool your ex and the entire class that you were together. Yes, you did make your ex feel jealous. So why did it feel so incomplete? Why did it feel as if you had more to resolve than you first did?
That was it? Is this the end of your faux relationship then?
The walk to your shared dorm was silent; the air heavy from what occurred just a few moments ago. With more questions than answers, you two had no choice but to retreat to the comfort of your shared living space.
While you went straight to your room to change, Iwa does what he does best when the atmosphere isnât as light as either of you liked. He goes to the kitchen, gets a flurry of unhealthy junk foods that you two, as health practitioners in the making, ironically had, and prepares the living room for your impromptu Godzilla marathon.
This is how it always had been, you muse as you hear him surf the TV for the movies, this is how you two always cheer yourselves up when you get into disagreements or when either of you havenât had the best day. You will forever be grateful for the support that Iwa always had been because without him, you donât know how you wouldâve survived this gruelling journey of yours.
Iwaizumi will always be important to you. He was your pillar, your anchor, your partner in crime, your pudding. You find yourself smiling as you fix yourâ it was Iwaâs but itâs yours nowâ hoodie, deciding to leave out all negativity that you had experienced because at the end of the day, Iwa was still with you.
Iwaizumi Hajime was still with you.
You pause, moments away from opening your door to your Iwa, wondering why it made you feel so warm to know that Iwaizumi Hajime was still with you, is still with you, and will always be with you.
Then you realize it all along.
The reason why pretending hurt more than your breakup, why seeing him so readily into your revenge quest stirred something inside of you, and why you felt that it was far more important to have Iwaizumi Hajime by your side than your ex.
Iwaizumi Hajime is and will always be your everything.
And maybe that meant that you wanted him by your side not as someone who you call your best friend, but someone who you hoped would be yours.
Is that too much to ask for?
Too focused on your revelation of the century, you failed to realize that the one person who reigned in your pretty head was standing before youâ concerned by the fact that you had taken too long in your room, only to find you frozen by your front door, quite oblivious of his presence.
âYou good?â He whispers, tone nothing but gentle. Iwaizumi, the ever-gruff and brash athlete, had always been gentle to you, hadnât he?
Youâve had too many thoughts about your longtime roommate and best friend that his one question left you speechless. Perhaps it was your bodyâs precautionary measure against you and the possibility of a flurry of your heartâs unspoken desire pouring themselves out readily for Iwaizumi Hajime.
You love him, you realize. Youâd always be ready to do anything for him, you realize.
âHeyâŚâ Iwaizumi tries again when the only thing you did in response was look at him. Then he nervously goes on a tangent because he wasnât fond of your silence, you had always been the better talker between the two of you, but Iwaizumi would rather he embarrass himself than let you sleep the night feeling terrible.
âI have Godzilla on for a marathon and I know we swore off on diet pudding cups after the challenge, but I bought some yesterday to eat with you because it had been years, right? Maybe we couldââ
âI like you.â
ââ eat some while⌠What?â
It was Iwaâs turn to be speechless. Maybe he was hallucinating. Maybe he was actually dreaming right now. You just said what?
âI like you,â You firmly repeated, far more serious than heâd ever seen you been. Iwaizumi stands frozen, unable to process what you had said; unable to fully grasp the thought of you liking him back; unable to get it in his head that the one person he had always cared about admitted to having feelings for him.
Iwaizumi Hajime had to be dreaming. Thatâs not what you said right? How could you ever possibly like him back?
ââLikeâ isnât enough to convey how much adoration I hold for you, âZumi. I care for you more than you could comprehendâ more than the four letter word could hold so when I say I like you, Iwaizumi,â You mumble, nerves getting the best of you when your confession only received silence but you couldnât stop yourself from finally admitting, âI mean I love you.â
With that final blow, Iwaizumi could finally affirm that you will be the death of him. You were his idiot, his contradiction, his pudding, and, with full confidence, he could finally say, his everything.
âSay something you idiot,â You whined out of pure embarrassmentâ too nervous to calm the loud beating of your heart as you witness Iwaizumiâs ears turn redâ successfully bringing him out of his everlasting gay-panicking for you. Godzilla plays on in the background, reminding the both of you that the world will keep moving to tomorrow despite how slow time seemed for you two.
Iwaizumi tries to calm his nerves in the guise of sighing the way he always did when you did something that was contradictory to how things were for him. Smiling ever so softly at your scrunched up face trying its best to hide your trembles, he says:
âI like you too.â
âAnd when I say I like you, Y/N,â Iwaizumi immediately adds with a teasing smirk on his face, âI mean I love you.â
âDamn you idiot.â
[omake]
before either of you could even move from your place, your dorm's door bursts open with an annoyed oikawa waiting.
"i've been standing outside for 15 minutes with all my luggage because i wanted to surprise my best friends but this is the welcome i get?" oikawa growls as he chucks the multitude of suitcases that he brought, only then noticing the atmosphere.
oikawa feels daggers pointed at him when he meets iwaizumi's glare. "oh wait..." oikawa slowly realizes, the imaginary lightbulb on his head lighting up by the way you had been so embarrassed, "oops...?"
"kUSOKAWA!!!"
âreblogging helps, thank you!!

RWBY Recaps: Volume 8Â âFaultâ
Hello, everyone! Weâre not even bothering with an introduction today, letâs just get straight to the only thing that matters.
HERE HE IS, THE MVP OF THIS EPISODE, OF THE WHOLE VOLUME, THE SERIES, THE ONLY ONE I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW
Iâm joking⌠but only a little. In all seriousness we will get to Ren, but you all want to hear a funny story first? I somehow got it into my head that there was no RWBY episode this weekâthe holiday and allâso I poured all my meta time and energy into a ridiculous Ironwood analysis as a placeholder, only to wake up this morning and find the strongest (and most complicated!) episode this year waiting for a recap. Like some sort of grimm nosing into my inbox.Â
Okay, so itâs not a funny story, but if RT would just do a better job with their website my life would be a whole lot easier.
So here we are, taking a look at the episode âFault.â Quick question, is every episode this volume going to have a one-word title? Itâs not a criticism, Iâve got nothing against a punchy name, Iâm just curious since RWBY has never done that before. If anything, theyâve gone more for symbolically significant phrases like âA Brawl in the Family,â âPlayers and Pieces,â and âThe Lady in the Shoe.â I wonder what sparked the change.
Anyway, we open on Robyn laughing about some story sheâs told, something about Joanna losing a fair fight for the first time, presumably to her. This is what weâve learned about Robyn since this volume started: she refuses to acknowledge that she had a hand in Cloverâs death; she was asked by Blake and Yang to keep the Amity secret but, according to May, couldnât keep her mouth shut about it; and she tries to cheer Qrow up by bragging about her own skill.
Alrighty then.
Obviously, this little story fails to land. âTough crowd tonight.â Robyn looks to Jacques as well as Qrow when she says this and since she clearly doesnât care about cheering him up, she must want to get a rise out of him. Create something, as she says at the end of the scene, thatâs exciting. Robyn just really loves to start fights. Against Ironwood, Clover, bickering matches with Jacquesâstories told about winning them! If sheâs not fighting someone sheâs not interested.
Qrow does eventually give the smallest smile though and Robyn cheers. âDid I win?â They both quickly grow serious again though and Robyn says sheâs âsorry for what happened. It wasnât your fault.â Her apology would mean more if she was apologizing for her actions, not providing a generic âSorry for your lossâ like she had no hand in this.
Qrow then insists it was his fault⌠but, of course, not for the reasons why heâs actually responsible (also, didnât we do this two weeks ago?). For starters, Qrow blames his semblance for everything that went down, despite the fact that his semblance is not responsible for him breaking Cloverâs aura, or Tyrian stabbing him. The most weâve seen his semblance do is cause minor mischief, which in and of itself is absurd considering weâre meant to believe that it has kept him from his family most of his life, and informs choices like whether heâll travel with the group in Volume 4. Still, itâs not unexpected that he would blame his semblance and think that having friends is a âchildish dreamââdepression is one hell of a liarâbut rather, itâs frustrating that no one is helping Qrow see the truth of the situation, both the good and the bad. He certainly doesnât need Robyn providing generic platitudes that absolve them both of their choices.
You know what the worst part is? The two kind, level-headed adults with enough distance to help Qrow acknowledge his mistakes while also correcting him about his misconceptions⌠are Ozpin and Clover. The former is still ignored by the cast, the latter barely got to be a character before he was killed. Â
Qrow goes on to say that he âmade a deal with the darkness and [Clover] paid the price.â Iâm sorry, what does that mean?? Outside of referencing his team-up with Tyrian, thatâs the most dramatic, nonsensical thing he could have said. Qrow doesnât admit to the team-up though, rather he starts blaming Clover for his own death.
Precisely like a good chunk of the fandom has done đ
He says that Clover just âwouldnât let upâ (translation: he wouldnât agree to let me go when I was under arrest) and that they could have âworked together against Tyrian if Clover had justââ
Thereâs a lot to cover this episode, so Iâm not going to dive into another explanation of all the justified reasons why Clover didnât trust Qrow in that moment and why Qrow was the one who âwouldnât let up.â If youâre interested in that rundown, head here.
Side note: can RWBY please stop with the weird mouth closeups? Iâm begging the animators. Especially when so much else in this episode is gorgeous.
Yes:Â
No:Â
Robynâs response is to make it all about her. I say, as a hypocrite, because my instinctual response in comforting someone is to also bring up a way that I might, sort of, know what theyâre going through. Itâs something to work on and, as always, Iâd be more receptive to Robynâs attempts if she werenât failing so spectacularly in every other aspect of her characterization. Case in point: she says that having a truth semblance tends to make people push her away, but weâve never once seen that. Weâre introduced to Robyn as sheâs adored by Fiona. The people celebrate her. Yang and Blake trust her immediately, for no reason, and comment on how useful her semblance isâtheyâre not concerned with it. Ironwood likewise works with her and allows her to use her semblance on him in public, at least for a time. May spoke fondly of Robyn last episode. She just finished a story about Joanna⌠where is this pushing away you speak of, Robyn? I really wish RWBY would consider things ahead of time and actually show them to us, rather than just having characters announce that theyâre (supposedly) there.
Nice symbolism though with Robyn touching the electric bars and pulling her hand back. You reach out, you get hurt, curl in on yourself, blah, blah, blah. Too bad itâs not a moment attached to an actual struggle of hers.
Qrow buys it though, saying heâs never thought about it that way before.Â
You know, I get why a lot of people in the fandom hate Clover. I canât even claim Iâm much interested in him as an individual. Iâm sick of straight, white, able-bodied men getting the spotlight, which is one of the things that drew me to RWBY in the first place⌠so theoretically Robyn should be the better choice for Qrowâs BFF, right? Especially in a world where FairGame only existed in RTâs social media queerbaiting. Give us the badass gender-bent Robin Hood instead of the boring military man!
On paper it sounds great⌠which is why itâs astounding that RT bungled that so badly. Â
Qrow never finishes his thought about Clover because the Ace Ops come in to return Watts to his cell. Interesting. The writing has definitely made Ironwood stupid, but perhaps not as stupid as he could have been? If he got Watts to hack Penny (we donât yet know whatâs going on with her during all this) and then promptly shut him away again, thatâs just about the best way you can follow up on your worst decision.
Harriet spots Cloverâs pin and tells Qrow âYou donât get to keep that,â but then doesnât take it from him. See, that right there is a better motivation for potentially opening the cell. Qrow says he didnât kill Clover, Harriet shoots back that his blood was on Qrowâs blade (again, focusing on the wrong way that heâs guilty), Robyn challenges her to get the truth via her semblance⌠and Harriet considers it? Why? Sheâs not the one struggling with her loyalty here, thatâs Marrow, yet heâs the one who has to pull Harriet back with âWhat are you doing?â when she looks at the keypad. Have Marrow almost be swayed by Robynâs taunting, or have Harriet almost open the door because sheâs furious and desperate to get Cloverâs pin back. Either one of those would make more sense than this.
Also, no one checked Qrow during his arrest/before he was thrown into his cell?
Also, note that Marrow uses a nickname hereââHareââso Iâm continually unpersuaded by the âTheyâre not friendsâ claim. Yes, Harriet hits his shoulder on her way out⌠and Ren will later scream at Jaune about cheating. Harriet being in a bad mood because their leader was just murdered isnât evidence that theyâre not close, no more than Ren responding to Everything Traumatic Ever is evidence that he doesnât care for his friends.
Also (x3), Robyn calls Harriet âmohawkâ?? Canât this woman come up with a single good insult?
As the Ace Ops leave Robyn lays back down on her bunk, exactly as she was before, and says, âWell, that was almost exciting.â Kind of like this scene! Luckily, the episode is about to get a whole lot better.
The music immediately picks up as we segue to Ren, Jaune, and Yang chasing after Oscar. On the whole I really enjoyed this scene, largely because it shows the group doing their bestâin a way that feels persuasive. Iâll admit that others have a point about them just standing around while the Hound changes formâyet still failing because, you know, our villain is actually powerful! However, there are, as always, some nitpicks.
One of the first bits of dialogue we get is Ren noticing that the bikes canât stand being in the cold for very long. It bugs me that bikes suffer more from the cold than the civilians do. To say nothing of the fact that it once again doesnât amount to anything. Their bikes carry them through the whole battle and Jaune looses his because of a grimm. Then Yang manages to fix the totaled bike with a single part, despite the continued cold. Why bother introducing this as a problem when itâs meaningless each and every time?
The three do demonstrate some great teamwork though. When Yang yells that she wishes one of them could fly, Jaune uses his shield to launch Ren at the Hound⌠so that he can get dragged through the air, hitting rocks. This poor guy. I like that though because no, these teens shouldnât be perfect, strategic masterminds and yes, theyâre in the kind of situation where they just have to try something and see if it works. Jaune canât think ahead to what Ren will do once he grabs the Hound, they just have to get him to that point and go from there. Which they do. Ren snags a boulder to slow them down further (thatâs smart) and Yang goes higher to fire at the Houndâs face (donât hit Oscar he doesnât have aura!!). Theyâre at a crazy disadvantage here and still trying their best to get our boy back.
The overall tone is⌠fine? Again, love supportive Yangâthat high five with Jaune was wholesomeâbut it continually feels weird to get that when Oscar is in the literal jaws of death here. On the whole though the scene keeps to the action and seriousness of the situation, which I appreciate. Weâll talk more about tone during the outpost scene.
It's looking like they might be making some sort of headway when the Hound lets out a roar that, as Yang puts it, calls for backup. 1. Yay giving this grimm even more power to mess with the cast, 2. Holy shit there are so many grimm around. See, scenes like this is why Iâm side-eyeing the anti-army rhetoric in the show (a stance Iâd otherwise agree with 100%). Because do you see how many there are? Thatâs not Salemâs army, thatâs just the normal grimm hanging out around Atlas. The cast is screwed if anyone were to, say, order them to attack the kingdomâŚ
Kudos to RT for bringing back the centipede grimm though. I honestly thought theyâd just be a one-off action sequence in Volume 7.
While everything is falling apart Ren catches a glimpse of Oscar, complete with rosy cheeks to make him look super young, and the sight fills him withÂ
He starts climbing towards the Hound and we cut away.Â
Meanwhile, Jauneâs bike is hit with some of the centinelâs acid (again, not the cold causing problems) and he takes a tumble, managing to keep his feet before Yang snags him. Moments like that really do show how far heâs come and Iâm glad we got to see such a moment in an episode where his cheating was brought up. Jaune then uses his shield to fly over one of the dragon-y grim, but... wait. The shield is flexible?
Literally what is the point of that? As a shield, I mean (it clearly works fine as a ramp). If you can just tip it over like that then so can the grimm or another fighter. Forget how tiny the shield is, all a monster would have to do is boop it and it would fall over. In fact, it probably should have with the grimm scratching at it before. Seems rather useless, unless youâve got writers crafting convenient situations. Also, does Jaune have multiples of this thing? He picked it up before, but thereâs no way he found that one again. Idk, Iâm really not feeling this addition to Jauneâs arsenal. Better to give him a range option so heâs more versatile.
Still, they fly over the grimm and the two let out a sigh in synch. Whatever else we might have to say about this volume, RT is definitely giving us different interactions and team-ups. Well done there. Why, Jaune and Yang have managed to survive all that together!
Oh wait, never mind. Theyâve gone off a cliff.
Honestly, Iâm shocked they actually went over. I thought Yang would stop in time, or weâd have a classic moment of them tumbling off the bike and ending an inch from the edge, maybe going off slow with time for one to hang on. But nope, they plummet and it was done with such confidence by the camera that for a split second (the illogic of killing them both off aside) I thought that was it. Theyâre done for. Lucky for them, Ren catches them at the last second, managing to snag Jauneâs sword and them and immediately use his semblance so the grimm doesnât eat them. Thatâs skill, baby!!
But you can see why heâs pissed, beyond just the fact that his semblance is holding this group together. Itâs not Jaune and Yangâs fault that there was suddenly a cliff, but last we saw Ren he was heading towards Oscar. He had a plan. Granted, not one that was likely to lead anywhere given the Houndâs power (and the plot needing Oscar to reach Salem), but thatâs not the point. He was pulling himself towards their kidnapped friend and then at the last second had to cut himself loose to save two others. This moment wasnât anyoneâs fault, but it would take someone with no emotions at all not to be frustrated by it.Â
So we leave the trio literally hanging out and return to Rubyâs group who is threatening kids!Â
Seriously though WTF, Weiss? Look, I havenât always been kind to Whitley. In fact, I think thereâs a Volume 7 recap where I really laid into him for his attitude and for supporting Jacques. But thenâwith the help of some friends and other anon perspectivesâI thought about it for a hot second and considered how little power this child has. I was wrong to blame him for so much given the various circumstances here. It took, like⌠five minutes of thinking, and thatâs for a fictional character, not a real life brother. Weiss clearly hasnât given her brother five seconds of thought. Heâs in the same abusive household that she was. He wasnât blessed with combat abilities and a semblance to easily escape. He didnât have Weiss there to guide him like Winter guided her. He had to watch BOTH his sisters abandon him to Jacques⌠so when exactly was he supposed to learn to be better? Why would he be inclined to? Weiss was an entitled racist when she got to school and needed new friends to show her a new path. She admitted as much last volume! Yet the fact that Whitley is completely alone in this house while their mom locks herself in her room to drink doesnât register at all? This woman, an adult out to save the world as weâre frequently told, never once considered what it took to get her here and realize that Whitley has had none of the resources she did?Â
I want to emphasize that Weiss threatens him with her weapon. Itâs not just that sheâs dismissive of him and his plight, sheâs also happy to use violence if Whitley doesnât do exactly as heâs told. Violence⌠against her brother⌠who is a child⌠without any training. Again: WTF, Weiss? You know how I was praising RWBY last episode for not having the group beat up the Atlas personnel? Yeah, we get this instead.
Then she tells him to go to his room??
Speculation is that Whitley is about 2-3 years younger than Weiss. Or, to put it another way, roughly the same age as Weissâ leader, Ruby. Sheâll follow Ruby unquestioningly into world-changing decisions, but sends her brother to his room like a toddler? Which is it, RWBY? Are 17 year-olds leaders you should listen to, or babies who must leave the room while the grownups talk? He certainly canât be any younger than Oscar, so again, sheâll fight beside him, but treat Whitley like this? Whitley isnât exactly going to offer help in a respectful, eager manner, but that âFine. What do you expect me to do?â was incredibly open given his situation. He was willing to help and that was the perfect opportunity to have him, you know, do something. Something small and innocuous that wouldnât threaten the team if he betrayed them, but kept him around so he could talk to someone. But nope. Weiss just sends him to his room after criticizing him for not understanding that theyâre âbusy trying to save Atlas.â Weiss, what does Whitley know about all that? Heâs locked up in this manor after your father was arrested and the one news clip weâve seen said that no one knows why Ironwood recalled his forces, or whatâs up with those grimm overhead. Sheâs acting like he should have any idea whatâs happening right now.
Also, all of this is coming on the heels of Willow begging Weiss not to forget her brother, so thatâs just great. RWBY has the rest of their time in the manor to fix this, because if Weiss comes out of that scene having only been handed the means of arresting Jacques⌠thatâs just bad all around.
Finally, should we talk about how strange this choice is? Last episode we saw the group flying away and I assumed it was them leaving Atlas to go back to Mantle. It certainly looked that way, but now theyâve decided to stay until Nora is awake. Why? Isnât it more dangerous here? I mean, they didnât know the staff was gone and there are still arrest warrants out. Was Weiss just going to threaten anyone who dared report her? Where are these shields Ironwood spoke of? Have they gotten through them somehow, or are they currently trapped in Atlas?
This is âOscar is in the slums, leaves the slums, learns theyâre going to the crater, but the slums are actually the crater, so weâre heading back nowâ all over again.Â
The one good thing about this scene is that Blake and Ruby talk! âŚfor about two seconds lol. Eh, better than nothing. Blake says that if Ruby is worried about Yang she could try calling her. Ruby has, and Yang isnât picking up.
Does Ruby think sheâs in danger or ignoring her? Unclear. We, however, know that Yang is now lost in the middle of nowhere with no reception and no transportation back to Mantle. The three of them start trudging towards an outpost Ren spotted, needing to find shelter âbefore this weather drops our aura levels completely.â So what about everyone without aura?? I wish that I could check off the bingo space again because this is ridiculous.
Ren, once again, isnât in the mood to talk, but unlike Jaune, Yang canât leave something alone. So she coaxes him to tell him whatâs wrong and you know what? She does a real good job at first. Sheâs encouraging, but her voice is level and she doesnât come across as accusing. Well done, Yang.
Things quickly fall apart though as Ren says EVERYTHING IâVE EVER WANTED TO SAY TO THIS GROUP. Holy shit, everyone, letâs count âem up:
Nothing is going smoothly so letâs stop pretending itâs all fine
Oscar has been horrifically kidnapped thatâs #bad
This is not a normal part of being a huntsmen
We donât know the first thing about being huntsmen!
Every time weâve had to make real decisions we got them all wrong, yay us
Weâre trapping a city here for Salem to destroy whenever she feels like it, yay us x2
Our leader is barely more than a kid and one of us cheated our way here
People are going to die because of us
âIâm just saying what nobody else wants toâ
Yangâs response? Incredibly weak imo. Just as weak as the fandomâs has been since this conflict started in Volume 7. Her argument against letting Atlas go is that Salem wonât just let it fly away with her whale⌠but no one knows that. Sheâs certainly just letting it sit right now! Assuming that something wonât work because you expect the worst is not a compelling reason not to try.
Her argument against their ineptitude? They saved Haven, took down a leviathan, and got the lamp to Atlas. Letâs break that down a little more.
Did they fight well at Haven? Yes⌠overlooking that Weiss would have died if not for a timely semblance reveal. But the real point here is that they âsavedâ the school by getting the Relic. Problem is, they never won the relic, it was handed to them. Literally. They retrieved it not because they were capable of overpowering Salemâs forces and a Maiden, but because Raven decided sheâd rather her daughter be a target than her. That doesnât tell us anything about the groupâs skill, only about Ravenâs flaws.
They took down a leviathan⌠after drawing it to Argus in the first place. Thatâs kind of an important detail when Ren is trying to make the point that their decisions suck. Also, how did they take it down? Using Rubyâs silver eyes, which only worked because Jinn randomly decided to let her stop time. Oh, and also using the rest of Cordovinâs mech that they hadnât yet destroyed. Again, nothing about that fight demonstrates their skill, only othersâ abilities, resources, and the strange favoritism they benefit from.
Getting the lamp to Atlas. Well, you drove Ozpin away who was your ticket across the border. Then Maria told Ruby how to save you all from the Apathy (and Ruby herself was the only one able to resist long enough to demand you get the Relic back in the first place). You started that leviathan fight and ended it surrounded by Cordovinâs fleet. So how did you get to Atlas? Because she let you cross. How did you reach Ironwood? Because he dropped your arrest. Yang stopped Adam, yes, but that was its own, separate fight. Regarding the âgetting to Atlasâ point they botched that up completely.Â
Basically, this resume of victories is unpersuasive, to say the least. Yang highlights the end goal rather than acknowledging Renâs point: have we, as individuals, actually made things better lately?
They absolutely have not.Â
Note how, in contrast, Ren includes himself in this criticism. He doesnât just lay responsibility at Ruby and Jauneâs feet, heâs second on the list for being underprepared. For messing up. Heâs just an âorphan from nowhereâ and this tells us that, unlike Qrow, Ren is actually concerned with this problem and his own place in it. Heâs not just blowing off steam and running from his responsibility. Rather, heâs making important points here yet, as he says, no one else wants to listen.
And thatâs why the scene ultimately sucks. âBut, Clyde! Itâs a speech straight out of your metas!â Yes it was and it was beautiful to witness, but the problem is that Renâs supposed to be wrong. Jaune glares at him before leaving. Yang clenches her fists and asks if he just wants to push everyone away. Heâs left hanging his head. Then later they talk about how âbroodyâ he is and provide advice about how to stop doing that. The takeaway here is not, âHoly shit, Ren is right and we should rethink our choices,â but rather that Ren is wrong and needs to come over to their âcorrectâ perspective.
I love that this was laid out. I love that the group is actually fighting for once (way better than Ruby and Yangâs âfightâ). I also love that we finally see whatâs bothering Ren⌠but we all know this isnât leading anywhere. The scene ends with Jaune dismissing everything by stating that if Ren doesnât want to be a huntsmen, fine, but he has a job to do. Ren is supposed to feel guilty here for⌠telling the truth? Jaune is supposed to look like the hero for soldiering on with his responsibility while moody Ren drags behind. The scene is great, but the purpose of the scene sucks.
Actually, Iâd like to talk about a portion of the outpost scene real quick. Skipping ahead, because we really see here how little RT believes the words that theyâve put in Renâs mouth. Jaune admits that heâs right about cheating into Beacon⌠but nothing else. Indeed, that âmistakeâ is swept away because heâs earned his right to be here now. You shouldnât care about that anymore! Ignoring the point Ren was making about how much theyâre in over their heads. Yang apologizes to Jaune on Renâs behalf, making it clear that she cares more about his potentially hurt feelings than any of the points Ren made. Remind you of anything? Like oh, say, that time Yang cared more about Jauneâs feelings than whether heâd hurt Oscar after slamming him against a wall? All of this despite the fact that Yang JUST accused Ruby of the horrible situation theyâre in. Now Ren acknowledges that theyâre in a horrible situation and Yang⌠doesnât care?? Again, RT is good at giving us the pieces we want, the surface level stuff, but is rarely able to combine it into something fulfilling. If anyone actually takes Renâs stance seriously, changing their ways rather than talking him out of it, Iâll be shocked.
Especially since the real nail in the coffin of this scene is Jaune telling him that âThe more you hide from what youâre feeling, the more alone youâre going to feel.â
JauneâŚâŚâŚ..buddyâŚâŚâŚ.palâŚâŚâŚâŚwere you asleep during that scene? Ren DID tell you what he was feeling. For the first time he did come clean about everything he was experiencing and you both rejected him for it! Heâs not pulling away because heâs hiding from what heâs feeling, heâs pulling away because he did show it and both his friends reduced it to âpushing [them] away.â Which is it, Jaune? Should Ren be more open, or should he stop saying things you donât want to hear? Itâs a more complicated version of telling your parents about your interests, them mocking those interests, and then theyâre surprised when you donât share things with them again. I mean, the gall of Jaune to reject everything Ren said in the moment, ignore it after heâs calmed down, and then lecture him about being hiding his emotions.
Jaune and Yang (and the story) donât want Ren to say what he really thinks, they want him to say what they think. Ren should speak up, but only if heâs going to agree with them.
So Ren sits out in the snow because potentially dying from cold is better than staying in a room with Yang and Jaune. I canât really blame him lol.
One last thing about the fight scene. Remember how May was put in her place last episode for not using Pennyâs name? Well, Yang doesnât either. Granted, âthe Maidenâ isnât as overtly insulting as âtin canâ (or whatever it is May said), but it amounts to the same thing: both are replacing Pennyâs individual identity with her status as a tool they can use. May sees Penny as the cool tech girl who can get them into the military base. Yang sees Penny as the cool magic girl who is the answer to all their âHow do we win this?â problems. Everyone is using Penny. Ruby to launch Amity, Ironwood to open the vault, but you know RWBY will never have a scene where Penny corrects Yang about her name and Ruby looks on, smug. Because the group can continually make the same mistakes as the adults/antagonists around them, but arenât called out on it in the same way. Ren calls them out and heâs told heâs wrong.Â
Anyway, the tl;dr of this scene is that Ren is the best. Too bad the story doesnât realize that.
We then move to my poor Oscar who wakes up looking at his own feet, Ozpinâs voice is as reassuring as it can be under the circumstances. âOscar? Donât panic. Weâre going to be okay.â I mentioned two weeks back that I hoped the show would explain why we didnât see Ozpin try to take control during the Hound fight and we still donât have an explanation, so thatâs disappointing. This line is all we get from Ozpin because thatâs the norm now. We moved from him being written out of the story entirely to having one or two lines an episode (excluding a speech meant more for the audience than the characters). So, improvement? But a lackluster one, I think. Especially given that he is the focal point of this entire situation with Salem.Â
Iâm avoiding the elephant in the room though. Oscarâs torture is horrifying. In the sense that it should be horrifying. Salem might still inexplicably not be attacking Atlasâand what sheâs after at any given time might be getting more and more muddledâbut sheâs absolutely terrifying here, which is what we needed. The mix of assault with that nurturing tone is just skin crawling. âMy long lost Ozma. Found at lastâ while she (I think?) shows images of their daughters. Honestly, I only heard that from friends, didnât catch it myself, but then my eyes are shit to begin with. I couldnât see a thing in this shadowed shot.
(Itâs like watching Game of Thrones all over again.)
Oscar tries to pretend to be Ozpin and he does a damn good job with âIâm sorry the reunion isnât living up to your expectations.â Itâs not enough to fool Salem though. She says heâs ânot himâ yet and Iâm again reminded that the show continually references this merge without showing us any change. Theyâre apparently closer to one person now, but they still speak as individuals. Oscar has Ozpinâs magic, but hasnât used it, even when his life was on the line. The closest we get to evidence that the merge is underway is that Oscar attempts to lie about knowing Jinnâs name⌠but what the hell else is he supposed to do here? I suppose he could go the action hero route and shout that sheâll never get the answer out of him, but trying to lie is by far the safer option. That doesnât tell us that heâs becoming like Ozpin, or even that theyâre truly âlike-minded soulsâ as Salem claims. It just tells us that Oscar has two braincells to rub together and can say a short sentence without totally giving himself away. Maybe the kid played a few rounds of Remnantâs Among Us.
This moment highlights another justification for Ozpinâs secrets though. He lives an existence where he is not in control of his own (âownâ) body. At any point the host heâs with could falter, fail, turn on him, and in doing so give crucial, world ending information to the enemy. Itâs already happened on a small scale, with Oscar successfully taking control, stealing the Jinn information, and giving it to the group. Now here heâs being tortured. How long can he last? Will Oscar give up Jinnâs name? If Ozpin didnât have the location of the Relic locked up tight in his own consciousness, would that information be lost too? Iâm not looking to blame Oscar for anything hereâI donât want to imply that this situation is karma for him taking Jinnâs name, or some such nonsenseâI just want to acknowledge that this is the sort of stuff Ozpin has to worry about. If he shares these secrets then thatâs more fallible people who are capable of giving that information to Salem. If he keeps themâŚwell, heâs the only one who has to keep his mouth shut during a torture session. His host might want information about the Relics, thereâs an argument to be made that theyâre entitled to them, but if I were Ozpin I wouldnât want to take that risk either. The question has essentially become, âWould I trust a 14 year old to keep quiet while tortured by a witch?â Maybe Oscar will! Heâs enough of a BAMF to manage it⌠but thatâs still not something Iâd want to bet on. Better that Oscar simply doesnât have that information to give Salem, period.Â
So obviously this âworking relationshipâ that Salem wants isnât going well. When Oscar lies she jumps straight to torturing him.
This was legitimately hard to watch and Iâm torn about that. On the one hand itâs what I wanted: a scary, powerful Salem who uses the tools at her disposal to get what sheâs after. Thatâs great! Yet Iâm still reminded of how far this show has gone to literally beat up the child of the group. Oscar is the one punched into a tree, attacked by a friend, shot by an ally, the star of the showâs most horrifying kidnapping, now the first to be outright tortured by Salem. I donât really have a point here, Iâm not looking to level any specific accusations at RT, Iâm just commenting on the pattern and acknowledging that it makes me uncomfortable. There are parts of a story where youâre supposed to be uncomfortableâlike the villain torturing a heroâand then there are parts where youâre uncomfortable because the writers seem overly focused on showing images of a specific kid suffering and thatâs⌠weird.
Iâm not sure what to make of that just yet.Â
Anyway, Salemâs magic here is surprisingly pretty. Pretty and painful, but I expected more red and blacks, perhaps some spikey imagery, so the rainbow was an interesting surprise. Given the amount of pain Oscar is in, I suspect too much of that would kill him, so Salem calls in Hazel to continue the interrogation. The first few hits he deals are for Haven, the others for his sister.
See, this is why RWBY needs to actually embrace its âlife isnât a fairy taleâ theme. You cannot show me child torture in one week and then move to Ruby âWeâll win because weâre the good guys ^_^â Rose the next. The whole reason why Ironwood (and Ren now) was right is because this is the shit reality theyâre dealing with. You didnât run when you had the chance and now Oscar (and Ozpin) is being tortured. You keep talking about saving Mantle, but the only reason why theyâre not already dead is because the writing randomly turns the cold danger on and off. This mix of horrific, real world danger and unjustified confidence doesnât work.
âŚalso, I officially donât want any redemption arc for Hazel. This guy is beating on a child because heâs convinced that heâs Ozpin, blaming Ozpin for his sisterâs decision, all while forwarding a genocidal maniacâs plans. Hazel and his ridiculous shirts can just get on out of here, thanks.
Finally, I just want to say... this is the woman a lot of the fandom defended. This is the woman you wanted raising those girls and blamed Ozpin for trying to escape with them.
This is how Salem treats children.
Oh, and all of this is without his aura because it just broke. So Oscar is in serious, non-fantasy trouble here.Â
Someone please rescue him soon đ
We finish up with some frankly boring stuff with the rest of the villain cast. We learn that the Hound is an âexperimentâ and a new one given that Cinder has never seen it before. Salemâs dialogue is admittedly greatââDo you hear that, my pet? She thinks. She wants.ââbut Cinder just rehashes everything weâve heard from her before. She wants the Winter Maiden power. She has trouble remembering that sheâs playing at Salemâs slave. She even rehashes the exact same line, âWithout you, I am nothing.â Why are we wasting time on this when we had that tantalizing backstory before?Â
Bleh.Â
Salem tells her in no uncertain terms to stay put.
So Cinder immediately leaves LOL.
She just wants to âcheck onâ Amity tower because she âknows those kidsâ in ways Salem doesnât. Iâm admittedly slightly confused as to how Cinder knows to go there? Did she believe Ironwoodâs lie that it was finished even though it apparently IS finished now? Has she overheard something? Iâm not sure. Frankly, keeping track of that stuff in RWBY is headache inducing, so letâs just roll with it.
Neo, the only one with a brain around here, makes it clear she thinks Cinder is an idiot for going. Emerald, always the Cinder fan, offers to go in her stead. Sheâs been working on her semblance, so I expect weâll see something cool with that soon. They head off, apparently not worried about what Salem will do to them when they get back.
Which is when we move to the outpost for our final scene, most of which Iâve covered. I only have two more things I want to bring up here.
The first is the tone. As said earlier, the tone of the Hound chase wasnât horrible, but I find myself disappointed in the overall attitude of Jaune and Yang. Yang is making jokes about how they canât fly, high-fiving Jaune, and theyâre both shrugging off Renâs concerns. Jaune says he wonât be able to sleep due to worrying about Oscar, but neither of them act particularly worried. Which isnât to say they need to be sobbing the whole time or whatever, just that Ren is the only one who feels real here. They may not agree with his stance about everything else, but theyâve all experienced the same event: watching a grimm that can morph, talk, and think horrifically kidnap a teammate. Shouldnât there be more emotion attached to that? Things have gotten better with Oscar than theyâve been in the past, largely due to details like Noraâs hug at the beginning of the volume, but letâs be real, theyâre still not perfect. Do we think Jaune and Yang would be this nonchalant if Ruby were kidnapped that way? Say all you want about Ruby being her sister, or others being teammates for longer, but the fact remains that Oscar has been taken to Salem herself and the only one reacting to that in any meaningful way is Ren.Â
Who they say will âbrood himself to death.â That right there. The one guy freaking out about your kidnapped friend should not be described as âbrooding.â
All of which segues into my second point, namely that Yang doesnât seem to care about Ruby anymore either! She asks Jaune, âDo you think she thinks less of me?â for not going to Amity and when Jaune reassures her that Ruby will always love her, Yangâs response is, âYeah⌠Ruby.â
She was thinking about Blake.
The kicker? I thought she was talking about Ruby too. Because Ruby is her sister. Because she and Ruby had the fight (âfightâ). Because Ruby was trying to call her to check in. Because Blake and Yang didnât even acknowledge that they went on different missions here. I thought Blake was like Jaune, not really taking a side and just heading with Ruby because the team is splitting down the middle. Where did this worry come from?
And I want to praise RT here (I really do) because I can see the effort. I said Blake and Yang needed to spend time apart, they have. I said they needed to work through their co-dependent identities, now Blake is reminding Nora (and theoretically herself too) that someone you love is just a part of you. I said that the group couldnât be a hive-mind, now thereâs disagreement. I said the show needs to make Blake/Yang canon at some point and you canât do that if they donât talk about and to each other. So I fully admit that this is everything I asked for⌠so why does it feel so badly done? No matter how many boxes it checks off, itâs still a moment where we thought Yang was finally worrying about her sister againâlike she usedâand then itâs âSike! It was really just about Blake! Again. Yang is worried about a problem that was never even introduced.â
I suppose thatâs why it doesnât work for me. Yang and Ruby had the falling out, but Yang and Blake, somehow, become the focus. Is it really so hard to write Yang as a sister and a potential love interest? Yang apparently canât care for Ruby and Blake, Weiss canât care for her team and her brother, Ruby canât care for Mantle and Ironwood⌠itâs like each character gets one (1) thing to put their emotional energy towards at any given time and thatâs it. Thatâs all they get.
On the flip side, this is why Ren feels like a person this episode. He cares about Mantle, and the future fight, and their past mistakes, and his place here, and the problems within the team, and Nora⌠He feels like a well-rounded person! vs. Yang and Jaune who donât even consider his perspective, vs. Yang having a fight with her sister but only cares about Blake. Theyâre one-dimensional in comparison.
It is, as always, disappointing.Â
As the group âbroodsâ then the camera shows us a piece of the ice nearby, slowly cracking as Jaune says that âThings always seem to get worse before they get better.â Well, thatâs unexpected. I didnât think our opening would be literal. Iâve been worried about Atlas falling on everyone, not everyone falling⌠to whatever is underneath the kingdom as a whole. Is the kingdom falling apart? Or is something waking up and moving towards the surface? If RWBY can reproduce the characterization we got with the Hound, I wouldnât be opposed to another leviathan grimm rising from the snowy deep to assist SalemâŚ
Though how the fuck group will survive everything and that, who knows lol.
And thatâs our episode! Issues asideâmost of which have been ongoing issues. We knew they were thereâI think this was our strongest episode so far this volume. Well done! There are still problems, no doubt, but at least I was only bored for a small portion of that 20 minutes. Letâs just keep heading in that direction. Â
Exciting Saturday, huh?
Regarding bingo updates:
RWBY actually re-used a grimm I thought theyâd abandoned, so well done there.
No civilians around for the giant grimm army to attack, so that was fine. Kind of strange though that they completely disappeared after the Hound left.
The timeline is starting to get wonky. For example, what kind of stakes am I supposed to expect when Cinder decides to head to Amity? Is it currently empty? Is Pietro there? Has Penny made it yet? I said weeks ago that RWBY would need to follow multiple groups to fill out fourteen episodes in just two daysâand theyâre definitely doing thatâbut that means we donât have a clear sense of what events are happening simultaneously and what are meant to be linear.
No Winter or Ironwood this episode.
Watts is back with Jacques! Potential for team-up 2.0? That will admittedly be hard with Qrow and Robyn there, unless those two escape.
(Oh yeah, I thought Qrow and the others would be held in the military base and Ruby would find him during her heist⌠but she doesnât even care that Qrow is in jail.)
Maria is still a ghost. If we hit the halfway mark with her not doing anything Iâm calling the space.
I definitely wouldnât call this cliffhanger needless. Thatâs actually a cool way to end things, even if Jauneâs line was pretty on the nose.
Neo may be getting closer to backstabbing Cinder if those expressions are anything to go by.Â
Still waiting to see if Amity works.
And finally, drumroll please! âŚ
âMore obvious Blake/Yang implications without confirming a relationship.â Yup, Iâm marking that this week. After Blakeâs âjust a part of youâ comment and now Yang only being worried about her reaction? Definitely calling it. If RWBY confirms a relationship this volume Iâll eat my wordsâand some celebratory cake â but until then salt prevails. Especially after the fiasco that was Supernatural.
Still no bingo. Ah well, maybe next week lol.
Until then! đ

In season 1 Damon
Compelled an underage teenager to be obedient as he continued to sexually assault her. This isnât Damon being controlled by vampirism. This is a man being a misogynistic sexual predator. In 1x04 Caroline is looking at her bite marks and is compelled to take her abuser to the founderâs party and he compels her to take off her dress cause he didnât like it. He is later on top of her and she is scared and even asks âare you going to kill meâ but she canât do anything but stay obedient cause he compelled her. Even though she doesnât want this man on top of her kissing her. And may I remind everyone of this disturbing rapey quote "Sure She Does. They All Do. They're Whatever I Want Them To Be. They're Mine For The Taking." And when he tried to compel Elena in 1x03 âyou want to kiss me and want to kiss meâ and she slaps him.
Damon gave Bonnie PTSD when he tried to kill her. And she even lost her magic from the trauma.
In season 2 Damon
Once again sexually assaults a teenager. This time itâs Elena. He forces a kiss on her then kills her little brother right in front of her when she asserts boundaries.
He holds another woman captive by compelling her. This time itâs Andie. Prior consent does not mean future sexual interactions were consensual. He clearly compelled her to not be scared. And used her for more than blood. He cried about his man-pain to her as if anyone cares.
âIf it comes down to you and the witch again Iâll gladly let Bonnie dieâ
Kills Mason forâŚâŚ man-pain reasons yet again.
In season 3 Damon
Kills Bonnieâs mom. I get he and Stefan were put into a âtough situationâ or whatever. But itâs the fact Damon was smug about it and couldnât be bothered to give a shit about Bonnieâs feelings. (But hey this is Bamon getting seasons of development)
In season 5 Damon
Goes on another man-pain violent rampage. Kidnaps Bonnieâs boyfriend. Torments her. Blackmails her. Isnât there for her at all. Kills Whitmore family.
In season 6-8 Damon
Continues to mock Bonnie. Call her useless.
Reveals he killed a pregnant woman
Shoves Bonnie violently into walls.
Use her. Manipulate her. Withhold info from her.
And not once did Damon apologize to Bonnie and Caroline. His behavior is always forgiven and forgotten. Itâs always âOh itâs just Damon being Damon.â Instead of Damon getting actual consequences we have Elena give a speech about âbending her morals againâ or Bonnie saying heâs a good guy cause he made pancakes. Or Stefan for no reason at all saying âheâs the better man.â
Yet Plec happily made this sexual predator, abusive, toxic, lunatic the romantic lead.
She killed off Stefan. Hates Tyler and killed him off too. Is ridiculously hypocritical about Kai. Hated Kol (until she paired him with the white girl)
And years later instead of expressing regret with making someone like Damon the hero. Instead of speaking out against the gross misogyny and racism her show depicted. She instead is bitter and spiteful to fans liking ships she hated.
Itâs remarkable that she keeps pointing at Bonkai, Klaroline, even Elijah/Hayley (which I suspect now was more about her issues with Phoebe Tonkin than any real regret on her part), but sheâs completely oblivious to all the problems of Damon and Delena.Â

Burns Relationship Alphabet
Two types of F!Reader
A- Activity (What is their favourite activity to do with Y/N.) Quiet Reader: Y/N and the Captain like using their days off to go on trips, it may seem boring but they like to check out the churches on the edges of the Empire, theyâre small and charming. Most of them are located outside of towns and often surrounded by green grass. Theyâre not as grand as company 1âs Cathedral but theyâre humble and peaceful. They go for the journey more than anything and to be away from people they know - it makes it easier to be themselves. Loud Reader: Burns is rather generous and he likes to buy things for Y/N, she always tells him she can get it herself but he ignores her and does what he wants. Y/N likes clothing and has far too many outfits, a way around their disagreement on parents is for Leonard to take her out shopping for an outfit heâd like to see her in. Itâs Win/Win. B- Beginnings (How do they act in the beginning of a relationship) Quiet Reader: The Captain was adamant he would never have a relationship, he had too many secrets and did far too much of the Churchâs dirty work for it to ever be safe to have a partner. So when he met Y/N after a horrific fire that took her home and her roommate, he didnât think offering her shelter in Company 1 was going to be an issue⌠But as she came to him for guidance or someone to talk to about losing her faith, he couldnât help but lower his defences around her. When Y/N made the first move to kiss him, he rejected her as gently as he could. He couldnât risk putting her in danger or having her be used as bait. She didnât give up though and Y/N eventually wriggled her way into his arms and heart. She doesnât mind that their relationship is secret. Loud Reader: Y/N is aware of Leonardâs involvement in the darker side of the church, sheâs in the same line of work. She lost her faith a long time ago but defends that people need something to believe in to keep them hopeful, sheâs a bit of a hypocrite in church standards. At first, she didnât like the man at all, she thought he was a pious idiot who happened to be very attractive - a waste of a man. It wasnât until she saw him completely disregard certain rules in the interest of doing the right thing, he didnât judge and he didnât condescend; if he did it was in order to fire someone up to make them stronger. After tha,t she began to talk to him more and at some point, she shoved him into a wall and, despite his meagre protests, had her way with him. Theyâre rather casual about their relationship but itâs not shared publicly.
C- Communication (Are they good communicators? How do they normally talk about their problems or solve issues)
Quiet Reader: Leonard is an excellent listener, itâs part of his job description as a priest but heâs always been quiet and prefers to hear people out. Y/N knows she can talk to him about anything, his life experience and his kindness make it easy - he never judges her. Heâs honest enough to tell her when he thinks sheâs wrong and isnât selfish with the advice he gives her. Y/N is a little sad that he doesnât talk so openly with her. She knows heâs hiding things and she knows itâs to keep her safe but also because he swore to God that he would keep certain secrets. It can make it hard for him to speak to her when he needs to and even though she gets it, it can get frustrating. Sometimes Captain Burns will simply want to hold her for a while and it helps as much as a conversation can. Loud Reader: They donât talk about their feelings or problems very often, they both have things they canât talk about and itâs simply not that kind of relationship. Theyâre experts at avoiding certain conversations, they understand why the other canât speak and that causes some tension at times. Leonard and Y/Nâs relationship is mostly physical, theyâre seeking comfort, not a confidante. D- Drunk (What are they like when theyâre drunk) Quiet Reader: Sheâs not big on drinking, Y/N can handle a half bottle of wine before sheâs unsteady on her feet and feels like sheâs floating. When sheâs drunk she gets a little emotional, whether itâs joy or sadness she usually ends up with someone handing her a tissue. Loud Reader: Y/N likes expensive liqueurs, she had a high metabolism so its hard for her to stay at a contact level of drunk before burning off the effects. She becomes playful at that point and likes to prank people. Once that involved replacing Karimâs pillows with blocks of ice⌠he wasnât impressed. Leonard doesnât drink often and heâs yet to get drunk, he finds that alcohol burns out of his system very quickly because of his ability⌠It at least allows him to keep an eye on Y/N and her drunken tricks. E- Emergency (How are they in emergency situations? Y/N gets hurt, they get hurt, someone is dying etc..) Quiet Reader: Y/N is terrified of fire, since the incident with her roommate she canât keep her head when flames are involved. She freezes and is more likely to get herself trapped then out of harms way. If someone is injured or itâs a general emergency, Y/N is very good at helping people and getting them to safety - sheâs usually the one calling the emergency services whilst people panic. Burns really worries when he knows thereâs a fire incident in her area, he always hopes that the Infernal wonât get that close but he also knows that just the thought of it will scare Y/N. He makes a point to call her before he leaves on a mission to tell her heâs dealing with it. Itâs not much but he hopes it puts her at ease. Loud Reader: Some might think sheâs heartless but Y/N shows little compassion when someone is hurt and once she knows they wonât make it she tends to leave them behind. Itâs not that she doesnât care, itâs just that she canât let herself get too emotionally involved. If she lets herself get too close then sheâll struggle to keep control of the situation and others could get hurt. She might seem like a bitch but at least everyone is alive. Leonard knows she can be strict during missions and he knows that she expects him to order her around like anyone else until theyâre alone. He knows that outwardly she seems fine but on the inside, sheâs having massive anxieties. F- Free Spot (Iâll give you any headcanon I come up with) Quiet Reader: Y/N and the Captain were married in a private ceremony in a church far out of the way, six months later she found out she was pregnant and Leonard bought her a house in the safest part of Tokyo he could find. They have a son. Very few people know about his family and itâs always a good day when he can come home to see them both. Loud Reader:
Y/N runs a convent on the edge of Tokyo, sheâs very protective of her girls and every one of them is a second or third generation. It means sheâs often busy with helping them learn but she wonât let Haijima take them to their labs to âmonitorâ. There have been times sheâs gotten in trouble for physically stopping them but Company 1 are conveniently always on hand to help get her out of a tight spot. G- Gifts (What kind of gifts do they give? What kind of gifts do they get?) Quiet Reader: She gave him a son. It took her nine months of preparation and it was hard work delivering such a precious gift. Y/N canât often get him gifts because of the secrecy of their relationship and because sheâs a full time mother and housekeeper. Burns pays for everything and he makes sure there is money in her account to treat herself and their child. Sheâll always make his favourites when he comes home and makes sure he has everything he needs. Loud Reader: She buys him expensive shirts. He gets through them rather fast. Whether itâs the enemy or himself, they always get burnt or torn. Y/N knows his measurements and has them tailor made, another gift sheâs fond of giving him is hair ties. Everything has to be fireproofed. Burns is also a giver of clothing, he knows how much she loves clothes and accessories. Her favourite gift from him was an anklet with a little lions head charm. H- Hugs (How do they show affection/cuddle) Quiet Reader: When he comes home, Leonard is very affectionate with Y/N and she still gets giddy every time he holds her. Whether itâs sitting on the sofa with he arm around her whilst she leans into him or simply standing at the entrance way when heâs first gotten in - she gets excited and canât think. Loud Reader: Sheâs not afraid to hand off his arm, even in public, and he doesnât do much about it. He tends to look exasperated with her and people think heâs trying not to be difficult with Y/N but in truth, he likes the feeling of her hand on his bicep. In private heâs more inclined to let her nuzzle into him and mumble about him being too warm. I- Irritation (What is something that irritates them? How do they show their irritation?) Quiet Reader: Sheâs pretty verbal when it comes to being irritated. Y/N will usually tell someone when theyâre being unreasonable and doesnât back down easily. If itâs something she canât face head on then sheâll get irritated and go into aggressive cleaning mode. Itâs best to leave her alone until sheâs calmed down. Loud Reader: On the outside, sheâll look pretty calm even if sheâs thinking about different ways to murder her problem. People can usually tell when sheâs annoyed because her third gen ability will begin to show and the air around her gets pretty heavy. Again, itâs best to leave her alone. J- Jackpot (How would they spend their winnings if they won the lottery?) Quiet Reader: It would be nice to pay for everything for once and take the pressure off of Burns, Y/N knows their son would love to spend more time with his father so she would hope that there would be a way to go somewhere far away to spend time as a family. That kind of money buys silence and time. The likelihood would be that Leonard would suggest saving it - in case he becomes unable to support them one day⌠Loud Reader: Sheâs going to give half of it to her convent and the rest she will use to buy herself out of the dirty dealings of the church. Y/N thinks sheâs already worked her debt owed but money talks. K- Kryptonite (What is their ultimate weakness?) Quiet Reader: Fire. Y/N is petrified of it. She canât breathe or even think coherently near it. Y/N knows that Burns would never hurt her, he has complete control of his ability but even then she struggles to see him when he creates flames. Even candles make her uneasy. Burns is worried sheâll get herself in trouble because of this, sheâs unpowered and he knows how fast a person can go up in smoke. Loud Reader: She made the mistake of showing her weakness and now she lives in fear of it being used against her. The
convent she runs is full of girls as young as two and as old as fifteen, theyâre vulnerable and Y/N is the only thing keeping them from being used by the church or Haijima. Captain Burns knows sheâll do something stupid in order to protect the convent and he knows it will be hard to choose sides when it happens. L- Laughter (What makes them laugh?) Quiet Reader: Sheâs not one to carelessly laugh at just anything, Y/N is sweet but still serious at times and Leonard takes great joy in making her laugh. It can be something as simple as bringing her flowers or rubbing his beard against her skin to make her giggle. Loud Reader: Y/Nâs the kind of woman who laughs when people fall over. She likes a good joke and she plays harmless tricks on people. Burns thinks itâs a little childish but somehow finds himself smiling at her antics. M- Morning ( How do they wake up in the morning? Are they a morning person or a morning grouch?) Quiet Reader: Y/N has always been an early riser and is pretty cheery, she enjoys making proper coffee and is especially happy when she can cook for several people. The only time she sleeps in a little is when Leonard pulls her close and tells her to stay a little. Loud Reader: She has to get up early most days and go to prayer, sheâs so glad she doesnât have to lead it and can be as dazed as she likes until breakfast. Burns has had to manhandle her out of bed on occasion so they can start the day. N- Needy (When do they feel particularly needy? How do they show it?) Quiet Reader: Because she rarely gets to see Burns and when theyâre in a public setting they have to pretend to be friends, Y/N is very needy when theyâre together. She feels like she needs to make up for lost time. She lavishes him with attention and he does the same. Loud Reader: The only times heâs ever seen her be needy were when she lost a loved one and when she let herself get too involved in a mission. She broke down each time. The loss of the child at the convent had seen her lock herself away for days until Burns had come to knock the door down. The second he had been within reach she had held onto him like her life depended on it. The second time was when she failed a mission and got her comrades killed, Leonard had rescued her and she had once more clung to him, asking him not to leave her alone. O- Oasis (Where is their happy place? Where would they go if they didnât have anything holding them back?) Quiet Reader: Captain Burns wishes he could go home to wife and child one day and never have to leave. If he had nothing holding him back then thatâs all he would need to be happy for the rest of his life. For now, they enjoy their trips to the countryside. Loud Reader: Y/N loves spending time with her girls at the convent. Theyâre such a handful and thereâs always something to laugh about or celebrate. They get very excited when Captain Burns or Karim or Foien come to visit. Leonard enjoys the visits too and he often hides candy in his coat pockets - if the nuns can get to it before it melts they can have it. (He always brings treats that donât get melted too) P- Pain (How do they handle pain? How do they handle when Y/N are in pain?) Quiet Reader: Sheâs a trooper, she barely ever complains about pain and will ignore it until she canât anymore. She figures that it will just go away but then it gets too much and she wishes she had just taken some painkillers an hour earlier. Burns gets irritated when she gets herself in such a state but will look after her until it passes. Loud Reader: Y/N gets hurt on missions, sheâs been hit, stabbed and shot at least once in her life. Sheâs the type of person who needs to have a scream and a little cry before soldiering on. Burns has patched her up before and sheâs done the same for him. Q- Quote (Whatâs a quote that fits them and your relationship) Quiet Reader: âI hope you find someone you canât live without. I really do. And I hope you never have to know what itâs like to have to try and live without them.â - Kiera Cass Loud Reader: âI love the
grey area between right and wrong.â - Dan Brown R- Reunion (How do they celebrate seeing Y/N after a long time of being apart) Quiet Reader: Burns is always flattered when Y/N practically slides across the floor in her eagerness to greet him, he takes her into his arms and presses kisses to her face until she forces him to kiss her mouth. They donât hide the fact that they want each other and if their child isnât in, they head straight to the bedroom. Y/N has usually prepared his favourite meal for him. Loud Reader: In their younger days they would see each other quite often but when she took control of the convent and Burnâs became Captain it changed. They were both busier, their jobs more legitimate but needing their full attention. When they meet they waste no time in catching up, they donât always have sex but neither would refuse the other. Sometimes itâs nice to chat about dumb stuff from the past and present. S- Stress (What stresses them out? How do deal with stress and how do they relieve it?) Quiet Reader: She doesnât tend to get stressed. If she does itâs usually because sheâs planned too much for one day and somethingâs gone drastically wrong. Burns doesnât usually show when heâs stressed but Y/N senses it when he comes home, heâs tired and she is always intent on helping him forget work for a little while. Loud Reader: When sheâs not on a mission she can get quite stressed - itâs difficult getting thirty to forty nuns to behave themselves and not burn the convent down⌠Thank Sol for alcohol. T- Terror (What are they afraid of?) Quiet Reader: Flames. Her best friend and roommate Spontaneously Combusted and set fire to their home. Y/N was trapped and was just barely rescued by Company 1. She lost everything. Loud Reader: Y/N used to be an Evangelist White Clad, she betrayed them for the Holy Church of Sol and joined their underground operations to pay for her âsinsâ. Later she got out of full time duty and was able to open her convent. Thereâs always a fear that the Evangelists will seek revenge or that the church will threaten her girls in order to get her back to work. U- Unique (What is a quirk that is unique to them?) Quiet Reader: Y/N is an excellent cook and her neighbours often ask her to bake cakes for parties. Loud Reader: She can do a backflip⌠itâs not really unique but sheâs pretty proud of it. V- Violence (Do they fight a lot? Are they a good fighter? What is their fighting style?) Quiet Reader: Her ability to fight is nil. Y/N has never been in a fight and nor would she ever want to be in one. Sheâs not a violent person and she doesnât like witnessing fights either, she doesnât see why people canât just talk things out. Loud Reader: Sheâs an excellent fighter, her speciality is knives and her ability gives her an edge (no pun intended). Y/Nâs a bit of a hot head so argues with people mostly. Her fighting ability was honed in order to serve God - Donât make her have to use it for stupidity. W- Wow (What does Y/N do that really surprises them? What do they do that Y/N really likes?) Quiet Reader: Leonard is always impressed with how dedicated she is when she sets her mind to something. Almost nothing can stop her. Y/N isnât afraid to admit that Leonard Burnsâ entire being leaves her in awe. Loud Reader: Y/N has never seen Leonard be moved once heâs planted himself, no enemy has ever knocked him down and sheâs even tried to move him herself. Heâs a mountain that cannot be budged. X- (Explicit headcanon. For all you degenerates) Quiet Reader: She likes to bite him. He loves when she climbs over him and teases him with her nails and teeth, considering sheâs against violence and is generally sweet natured, it never ceases to excite him. Loud Reader: Y/N isnât afraid to dominate the Captain, she knows he likes her to take the reigns for a while and itâs hugely rewarding that the Empireâs Lion lets her tame him. And of course, he shows her what sheâs dealing with if she gets carried away. Y- Yucky (Is there something that grosses them out so badly
that they canât deal with it?) Quiet Reader: Sheâs a mother⌠thereâs not much that makes her cringe anymore. Loud Reader: Y/N hates dealing with body parts. She once went on a mission with 52 and Burns, the young assassin sliced up an enemy and she ended up with a finger falling into her top. It was not appreciated and the little Joker regretted laughing at her as she yelled for Burns to get it out. Z- ZZZâs (What are their sleeping habits? Both with and without Y/N)
Quiet Reader: Sheâs early to bed, early to rise. Y/N has to sleep alone most of the time and she sometimes canât sleep because sheâs lonely. When Burns is there she sleeps happily in his arms with her head against his chest. Thatâs when sheâs happiest. Loud Reader: The woman sleeps like the dead. Once sheâs asleep she barely moves and her breathing is so shallow, that on the rare times heâs slept in her bed, Leonard thought she was dead and had to check her pulse. She complains that heâs too hot to sleep with in the summerâŚ

why the hive fckin suck at its job: a rant
spoilers for tgwdlm ahead!
first of all, it's important to consider what exactly the hive's job is. my answer is... who the fuck knows. literally. what is the hive's aim. what do you want Paul? more like, what do you want hive? let's find out!
it kinda evolves, as the play progresses. the intial aim of the hive, and one that does actually remain consistent is the constant burning need to grow and devour and gain more and more (insert capitalism metaphor here).
however, this is distorted by the people it possess who influence that aim, as we'll see later.
also the fact it crashes into a theatre displaying Mamma Mia gives the hive the motive it need to fit the world around it to the structure of the musical. having no originality of its own, the hive instead just picks up what is given to it. kinda like an evil baby.
it wants uniformity, that is indeed its ultimate goal and desire, no duh. it thinks it can achieve that through musical theatre, shame that the hive is dead wrong. cause the hive fucking sucks at its own job / aim / ultimate purpose / one concrete goal that motivates all its actions.
can't maintain control over its subjects
okay, so, the hive wants uniformity. it wants everyone to be dancing to the beat of its own tune. right? yeah. shame it literally can't keep its own possessed subjects in line at all. at the risk of sounding like the 10th doctor waxing lyrical abt humanity for the 50th time, humans are really difficult to control cause we're not really motivated by an altruistic allegiance to one primary good. we've got icky emotions that often move us to do stupid unpredictable stuff way more. it makes me wonder if the reason the hive wanted to use musical theatre to try and persuade ppl was cause it seems to think that is how theyll get emotive humans; through emotive songs. anyways. let's look at some examples shall weeeee?
Mr Davidson:
so, Mr Davidson. funnily enough, he's the guy whose in part acting as the hive trying to figure out what it wants through his interactions w/ Paul. every person it possess gives it just a bit more humanity and curiosity abt the world it is currently taking over. at least I think so. hence why as the musical develops u get character's like possessed!Alice wondering 'why does it hurt to love?' - the change in music and mood to something much more introspective really suggests to me that the hive is beginning to question the thoughts and emotions of its human hosts.
Mr Davidson is a family man through and through, he loves his wife Carol. she's his muse, his source of light. his feelings for her are not concrete or easy to explain and solve - hence why his sudden ahem demand of her is so hilarious and also jarring. it completely clashes with the 'I want song' which is simple, and often pushes forward a wider cause. not so with Mr Davidson, he just really loves his wife man. enough to break a frickin alien possession.
tbh I think its hilarious that (at least to me) the hive has to force him to forget and continue with the song, like, he straight up is just talking to his wife in that phone call, talking, not singing. so, no possession until he reverts back into song. ergo, the hive cannot maintain the uniformity it wants. even from the get go when theoretically its control should be stronger cause it has less ppl to co-ordinate. bad. at. its. job.
Paul:
this one hurts folks. yes, I know it's generally agreed, though somewhat debated that the state of Paul by the end of the tgwdlm is not purely possessed. I agree. once again, the hive is unable to truly enforce uniformity.
at this point, the motives of Paul and the hive are kinda just mixed, neither fully human nor fully alien. hence the constant shifts between pleeing for her to get away, to hide, to stay safe: 'what if the only choice is you have to sing to survive' and just full on old style hive nastiness 'let me puke in your mouth and just open your food bin girl' (so romantic 𼰠/j).
the hive has gone away from its original aim, and become something... different. no longer stuck to just one type of genre or style of song, it's really clever to show the developing complexity of the hive by showing how it is now juggling lots of different motifs with references to all the old songs from before recontextualised in a new way - its learning. evil baby... no longer uniform.
general miscommunication:
there are several instances of the hive not fully having uniform control over its subjects. for instance, right after not your seed with the three teens having to like... calibrate. they aren't just completely connected then?? also, this is a very small thing, but uhhhh at the end of inevitable when Paul is about to say the apotheosis is upon... the chorus interrupts him with USSSSSSS. interruptions??? not very in sync of u hive.
I think this inability to exert uniformity is also shown in the contrast between genre of musical theatre. my alien abomination cannot decide whether it wants to be the more modern edgy rock musical (join us (and die), not your seed ) or super happy go lucky old style musical theatre (lah dee dah dah day, and inevitable). it tries to do both, even while trying to encourage union, and sticking to one thing. hypocrite!!!!!
2. aims are guided by the people it possess
so, I mentioned this a bit already, but the hive isn't only mutating the humans, the humans are mutating the hive right back. this is more an interesting observation than any actual analysis but let's goooo.
greenpeace girl:
I think it's very likely that greenpeace girl is one of the first to be possessed. This is probably easily debunkable but whatever this analysis is flying by the seat or its pants anywayyyyy. why? cause where else would it pick up that whole 'this planet needs fixing' thing? it's interesting too, cause it morphs from expressing the desire to join hands and sing together, unity and peace with no actual action behind it. this then goes right to the other end, with the hive going 'fine I'll do it myself' and trying to save things by enforcing a dictatorship on the world. it develops and changes, and strays from its original means of accomplishing its aims! speaking oooooof...
3. inconsistent in means of accomplishing aims
okay, ur an evil hive mind. u think musicals are the way to win over these silly humans cause they're all weak and emotive and seem to respond to them. but, wait! schwoopsie! you haven't realised that for emotional depth and growth to mean anything, you need there to be established development and well... growth. otherwise the sentiments are as vague as the ones expressed in What Do You Want, Paul?
this show has genuine emotional moments, just not really during the musical numbers WITH EXCEPTIONS. any strife is smoothed over quickly, and so the development and change that would have to go into such growth is just gone. (see, You Tied Up My Heart) all so it can achieve its own desire to grow and grow and grow, maybe a metaphor for art being killed under late stage capitalism??
what actually matters is the impact the songs have afterwards, in causing a death - because we have a bond and care abt these characters. those short scenes between Paul and Emma are actually way more resonant than any song. except... inevitable, and also not your seed a bit. at this point the hive has learnt a thing or two, and can actually twist human emotion a little. but for it to do that, it has to reject the uniformity it prizes, and be adaptable. point towards being more human than it first thought? methinks so. and yet it's just not enough...
it's also why let it out, to me, feels really ingenuine. Paul has expressed himself in much better ways already. what they're doing is clearly paining him, and hurting the guy. he's terrified bless.
you can't force someone into being emotional vulnerable, man.
it's why all the deaths for the characters who are forced to express themselves are really violent, involving them being ripped open - literally forcing them to expose themselves from the 'inside out' as Alice reflects in Not Your Seed. you can't force genuine emotional connection, it has to be fostered, shown in the much more affecting relationship of Paul and Emma. the only reason the hive actually has power over our characters is because of these genuine emotional connections, which it tries and often fails to take advantage of, resulting in just resorting to brute violence. messy hive, very messy.
at the core, the musical's a kinda attack on that toxic positivity mindst: trying to force people to reach the sort of easy solutions by sharing feelings in a way that feels pretty invasive and deciding you are instantly fixed. the problems these characters face are jarringly not really what you'd expect a character in a musical to face, cheating, a lot of it, mid-life crisis. problems that are bland, or wayyyy too real. this is purposefully done, to reveal just how silly the hive's aim to use musical theatre to solve everyone's problem is. life is more complex than that smh.
4. a human can write a much more expressive, and genuine song than they ever could lol
u know which song I'm talking abt. what more is there to say. so much for making persuasive songs to tempt people over.
5. make me sad cause they took some perfectly nice ppl and funked them up đ
this was a stupid point lol. basically I'm just bitter that this hive took a bunch of perfectly okay ppl and gave them hive brain. screw u hive. I swear I'm gonna watch Black Friday soon, cause I'm sure it's gonna completely destroy every thought I've had so far, but whateve,,, just take this as a look at tgwdlm like it's a stand-alone piece.
these guys are supposed to all be 'individuals' on one level, but also 'appendages of a much larger organism'. there's a little too much individualism and fracturing to be cohesive enough to do that I feel. the hive to me is not an infallible, unstoppable force, in fact, every human it takes over only brings it closer to understanding us. so that's maybe a slight positive note??? idk ?! I just have lots of thoughts and feelings abt this musical even if this doesn't make sense I'm proud i wrote it down hehe.

The Prom
I know literally no one asked but I recently was able to see The Promâs national tour and Iâve been obsessing ever since so hereâs my (late) contribution to the conversation around The Prom movie adaptation.
Overall, the movie is not bad. I know, I know itâs probably an unpopular opinion. But as far as musical adaptations go, it really isnât bad (note I donât say that itâs good). They take full advantage of the fact that it is a movie and not the stage production. We see clips of things on phones, they have like montage scenes, etc. but it is also definitely disappointing compared to the stage production.
Negatives:
1. I know everyone is saying this but James Corden. The Barry/Emma connection plays such an important role in the musical and...he was not it....
2. This isnât James Cordenâs fault, but the storyline of Barry reuniting with his mother didnât sit well with me to begin with, but once I saw the stage production and realized it wasnât part of the original I was confused at why they added it in. Cause (i) super uncool of Dee-Dee to make that call for Barry and (ii) why must we always push this narrative? (this comment will sound out of place given one of the positives I had)
3. I did not realize how SANITIZED the movie adaptation was until I watched the stage production! Oh my gosh! The stage production is HILARIOUS and has such great ups and downs. They really made Jo Ellen Pellman try to be âoptimisticâ for what reason and WHY did they cut the Acceptance Song right before it gets really funny??
4. The movie caters to the straights. The emphasis on Barry, Dee-Dee, etc. (why did they add that bus scene with Dee-Dee and Barry), cutting You Happened before the Emma/Alyssa bit, not letting Emma be sad, Dee-Dee being a âsaviorâ and calling Barryâs mom for a reunion, etc. Come on man.
Positives:
1. I actually liked Mrs. Greeneâs acceptance at the end (which is hypocritical given what I said earlier, but I do think the two situations are different).
2. I know the structure of movies are different from musicals (3 acts vs 2 acts) so it makes sense (kinda) that I felt the musical ended a sooner than I expected. I liked the pacing of the ending of the movie better, which included having that scene of Mrs. Greene coming back to accept Alyssa.
3. Meryl Streep, Andrew Rannells, and Ariana Debose. Thatâs it, thatâs the whole reason.
Then something that I feel neutral about because it was definitely A Choice (I know some people didnât like it) was the general visual style? Iâm mainly thinking about the colors (including the lighting) and the wardrobe. That was such a Decision they made and I donât know whether or not I agreed with it. Yes, the colors and the costuming give it a sense of surrealism and abundance, sort of the fantasy of musicals if you will. I guess if you want to play up this fantasy, you donât really want to be too sad so I guess that approach supports Emma not being sad? I donât know. But also...Emma is an awkward teenager who should be allowed to feel the full extent of her emotions
Also as a side note, Iâm convinced they cast Kerry Washington as Mrs. Greene purely because she sings âfixing little problems is what I doâ
