I'm realizing only now I never finished watching S6 of Downton Abbey 😱

A few notes/questions:

-When Tom came back from America to be the agent again, did he realize he was going to have to manage Mary / hold the family together?

-The car crash with everyone running to help. I was IMPRESSED at Cora's grip on Robert 😂 "You're not going anywhere". I don't know if it was said grip, or the clenched teeth but I could hear the "Yes dear" in his gaze 😂😂

-Never thought I'd actually end up liking Thomas Barrow but here we are

-Cora's so upset at Violet's cold shoulder. Our girl has worked for something like 30 years at this relationship, and here we are, poor thing.

-I want to be mad at Violet but *sobs* 😭 and also who can stay mad at a character that delivers line like "Your feelings do you credit my dear but you must never let tenderness be a barrier to a bit of snooping". And "Don't be mysterious, it's the last resort of people with no secrets" 😂😂😂😂

-okayyyyy I've excused Mary Crawley's behaviour in the past because her eyerolls are brilliant honestly. But Edith and Tom have a point. It's not cute anymore, hasn't been for a long time. Lucky she took great care of Anna. (And thankfully the Bateses are okay dear lord).

-The family going to Mrs Patmore's 'place of illrepute' 😂😂 they laugh but they support her ❤️ (for all the times Mrs Hughes or Daisy comment on how the downstairs people live through the family, the family gets so heavily involved with downstairs just as much 😂

There’s so many to choose from in Season two pretty much every scene with Steve, him angrily working out, when he’s super feeling himself getting ready for his date but my favourites would have to be the basketball scenes just because they say so much, the constant contact, the way he teases Steve about losing his popularity crown with his tongue out, how much he seems to be genuinely enjoying himself, the intensity of ‘draw a charge’ and just how generally thirsty he is for Steve’s attention 😛😛😛

Season Three is a little trickier because it’s heartbreaking and we were denied him interacting with Steve especially in his Scoops Ahoy uniform (sigh) but Dacre’s acting was so good I particularly liked the sauna scene, the mind flayer interacting with El where you see Billy’s sadness in that lonely tear, the kidnap of Heather ‘Don’t be afraid, it’ll be over soon’ and of course him having the best hot girl summer before everything went horribly wrong

Yes yes yes, raising children is one of the most important jobs!

(Although, as a single young woman who is embracing and appreciating singleness more and more, I'm not sure I can say it is *the most* important. I'm still working through that! 😅)

But if I were to marry and have children, I would want to devote the majority of my effort to raising them and loving on them.

I think you would have to watch the show to get a better context for this conversation. Because of the constraints of the times and her position, Cora wasn't really even allowed to do anything besides being at home with her children. And even after her girls were grown and opportunities opened up for her to have a sort of "career" being on the hospital board and more active in the community, it seemed to often create conflict with her husband because he was so averse to change and not always supportive. I think Cora is seeing that her daughter has a similar desire, and that times have changed to allow for that more easily. (Also let's not forget that Edith has an amazingly supportive husband, we love Bertie!❤️) She wants Edith to appreciate and take advantage of the changing times.

A greater problem with Downton Abbey in this vein is how children are treated. They're really just plot points when they need to be, mostly around the circumstances of their births, and then they're barely background characters. The parents and grandparents are shown having fun playing with them every now and then, but they're never shown actually parenting. It's obvious that the kids are mostly raised by nannies. Maybe that was typical for that time period and that class, but I still find it very sad. This is a clearer way that the show seems to say that a career is more important than being a mother, and I do have a problem with that. For a show that's very focused on a whole family, father and mother and daughters and grandmother, it does a great disservice to the role and important of parenting.
