the thought of icemav celebrating christmas together makes me a bit crazy. what do they give each other???
usually nothing . That’s kind of a big deal. in the 80s/90s they’d (reluctantly) celebrate Christmas with carole and bradley (who took that shit kinda seriously) so they wouldn’t really do anything by themselves. Maybe go out for a nice clandestine dinner just cause. After Carole dies and Bradley’s papers get pulled from the academy, ice’s low key newfound interest in celebrating christmas is one of his many many ways to try and normalize relations between him & maverick and try to improve their relationship in the conspicuous absence of the rest of their family. but yes he does make an effort—as does mav—to take advantage of holiday time to be with him as often as possible so, though their schedules don’t always line up, after 2006 they spend about 3/4 xmases together
Ice has very few hobbies besides a.) lovingly working on his cars & plane and b.) reading, so he is exceptionally easy to shop for (as most hobbyless men are): nice tie pins, cufflinks, those unnecessarily expensive hardcover books about weird random topics you find in airport bookstores, fountain pens, nautical /aeronautical themed paperweights, nice leather watchbands etc. highbrow rich guy stuff
Maverick has sooooo many stupid little hobbies that each last between 4-6 months so he is ridiculously hard to shop for— “i thought you were into woodworking so i got you some tools :)!” “uh no that was in April. im trying to learn how to make wallets now” :( so mostly if ice ever gets him anything it’s usually just an expensive dinner date in the city or cash in a blank card or a blank signed check for airplane parts for the next year. Buy whatever you want idc <3
any and all gifts are given with extremely little fanfare PLEASE don’t make it a big deal… hidden around the house with a little “merry xmas!” note attached, or shoved into each others suitcases pre-leaving-for-navy-reasons, or unceremoniously dropped into one’s lap while he’s watching tv, “here you go,” “oh, this is nice, thanks!” Et cetera. love language of gifts/acts of service, but, like, very quietly.

Heyo! Love your work btw *chef kiss* I'm obsessed with your poly turtles stuff. Could you maybe do some Christmas poly headcannons? Seasonal Activities they do with their s/o, possible gifts they receive, fav cookies/treats, fav Xmas music. Idk just some festive stuff? If you're busy that's cool 😎 your poly turt stuff has me needing more haha. Thanks!
Ok, I'm pretty sure I got this before Christmas and it's now May. I'm so sorry. I won't go into all the reasons I haven't really been writing because it's a lot but I want to get back into it so here goes with this very unseasonal post lmao
and thank you everyone for you patience as I get back into the swong of writing for my blog
Tumblr media
Raph
This big hunk of red and green first
He's very seasonal if you think about it
He's also super (secretly) into the holidays
catch him doing his rendition of rockin' around the Christmas tree very loudly when he's off his tits on eggnog
((side note I think he would hate eggnog but would drink it solely because it's festive))
He's secretly super sentimental and he knows you love this time of year so he really puts his back into it
I'm talking it's the 1st of December and he wakes you up in a full Santa outfit and white beard (that he knitted himself) yelling "Ho Ho Ho!" and asking if you've been naughty or nice
it's like 6am so you, naturally, tell him to piss off
to which he makes a big show of trying to shove you into his Santa sack because "Someone needs a trip to the North Pole to learn the Christmas spirit"
He's also pretty good with crafts
obvs you guys can't go outside and be seen so he creates a whole winter wonderland in the lair (without telling the others, Mikey was the only one who appreciated it tbh)
also he's a great cook so you spend evening after evening baking sugar cookies and decorating them, sipping hot chocolate with a candy cane in it and whipped cream on top, making warming winter soups.
In terms of gifts, he gets you anything and everything he even thinks you might like
real big spender this one
handmade too items like a scarf he knitted for you because your old one was a bit worn, handmade card, he even did a little snow globe that he made with figures of you and him inside of it
he'll say "I know it's lame" or "It's not the best but I tried" but it means the world to you
Tumblr media
Leo
Big boy blue up next
I see him loving a very traditional, old fashioned, classic Xmas.
His big thing is that he loves to decorate the tree with you
but you would always bicker about how it should look
"No, I think a gold and red theme would look better!"
"But, Leo, we have all of these cute glass candy canes I wanna hang!"
"But I have a vision!!"
so this year he decides to buy like 6 trees (and by buy I mean forage, steal or cut down)
so you can both have your own trees and decorate them however you want
this, obviously, becomes a Christmas competition
your very unwilling judges are Leo's brothers and even Splinter
they have never looked more uncomfortable than when you and Leo are very passionately stating your case for why your tree is better than the other's and it ends in you both throwing baubles at each other
about half an hour and a lot of tinsel lying everywhere later you decide that maybe you're both a little too competitive
but Leo reassures that "That's why I love you"
He's so big on quality time with you
lot's of sitting by a crackling fire, sipping coco and letting soft Christmas songs play
he's made a playlist of v gentle ones like Eartha Kitt's Santa baby, Conventry carol and god rest ye merry gentlemen.
it's all about the mood w/ Leo
as far as gifts, it's has to be something personal and sweet
a pressed flower in resin from the first day you both met, a silver heart shaped locket with a pic of you both in it, some sort of talisman that's supposed to keep you safe in ninja superstition
Tumblr media
Mikey
Time for chaotic good to come to play
Mikey just manages to capture that almost childlike enthusiasm and wonder for the season
He has a funny habit of wrapping your gifts to look like something else
last year you were certain he'd gotten you a rocking horse but it turned out to be a new phone and headphones
"How long did it take you to wrap it like that?"
"Don't ask questions you don't wanna know.....3 hours to make the horse part look right"
normally he gets you silly but sweet gifts
lots of sticking filler things
oh and he gets you an actual stocking too, but like a comically oversized one to fit all the gifts
stuff he's made too
one year he made you 50 hand cut paper snowflakes with 50 reasons he loves you written and drawn on them
also stuff you guys can do together
video games he knows you'll find fun, stupid interactive games that you can play, that kinda stuff
he does a special Xmas scavenger hunt for you each year that the others pretend is stupid but it keeps getting more elaborate as time goes on and even they are started to get invested in the ending
there's a theme and everything ranging from polar express to murder at the Christmas party to Santa's grotto....
he also never fails to dress up as Mrs Clause every year (because Raph insists on being Santa and at first Mikey just wanted everyone to laugh, but now it's kinda a tradition)
Tumblr media
Donnie
oh my sweet gadget boy
he's super big into cocktails, the sweeter the better
and you always get to name them together but you both have a warped sense of humour so the names are getting out of hand
you pick a fave each year as well
last year was "The abominable snowman's frozen left nut" and the year before was "Mrs Clause putting glass shavings in Santa's food because he came back with the clap"
I told you they were bizarre....
his gifts are always thoughtful and so romantic
I HC Donnie as being a super romantic guy
whether it be a painting he made of the constellations and planets in correct placement on the night the two of you first kissed
or a wreath of dried flowers and plants to hang on the door that came from the field behind your childhood house
but this year it's a scrapbook filled to the brim with every detail of the two of you, all dated and with a little annotation telling a story as to why it's in there. photos, cards, handwritten letters, magazine cut outs, diary entries.... it's all in there and it's enough to make you cry.
He also sneaks you out on Christmas eve every year without the others knowing (they'd flip if they came to know that he was stealing you away at that time)
but he takes you up to the rooftops to sit on blankets and drink hot chocolate (spiked with a little rum, it's Donnie after all...) and look at the lights and snowflakes and people bustling home to their families and you sit and feel at peace and laugh as you make up backstories to each individual you see scurrying home
you lean against his shoulder and every year that he does this it feels more magical than the last

Head Canons: Holiday Edition
Currently taking a break from wrapping xmas gifts for family and had these thoughts in my brain so now they can be your thoughts too :)
Sun:
-Starts decorating the day after Thanksgiving, ropes in anyone who’s nearby
-If he finds/has handmade ornaments, those are his favorite
-Goes way too hard on outdoor decorations
-Has been shopping/making since July and already has his list finished by December first
-His favorite part is definitely seeing his partner's/friends’ reactions to the gifts!!
-Likes Christmas Music! Except THAT song. (You know the one.)
-Dramatically sings Last Christmas by Wham! Every time it comes on the radio
-Loves every gift he receives :) (but he might like the handmade ones a TINY bit more)
-Very careful unwrapping presents bc he doesn’t want to ruin your hard work!
-Christmas Movies? YES!! Hot Chocolate? YES!
-Favorite Christmas movie has to be The Polar Express (But I think that the original Grinch is a close second)
-Ugly sweaters all day long. They get progressively more complex each year. Eventually he’s just going to be wearing the whole damn tree
-Hangs a mistletoe in the place where he is sure it will earn him the most smooches, pretends its a coincidence
-Asks kids if they’ve been good this year, if they say yes he gives them candy :’)
-Would 1000% become one of Santa’s elves if the chance ever came up
-Knows Santa isn’t REALLY real, but loves playing along because he finds it so wholesome.
-Snow angels! Snow people! Snow sculpting! :D
Moon:
-He groans if he hears Christmas music before December 1st
-Enjoys decorating but thinks that Sun overdoes it
-Favorite part of decorating is lifting up his fave so they can put the star on top of the tree <3
-Started thinking about gifts in July because Sun did but then totally forgot until November and is now scrambling to finish getting things together :’)
-Likes the Christmas lights but also hates that it is so much BRIGHTER on the streets at night >:(
-Prefers giving gifts over receiving for sure
-All I Want For Christmas comes on. The eye twitch begins.
-Doesn’t mind other Christmas music usually
-Absolutely shreds the wrapping on gifts like a feral cat :)
-Has one ugly sweater that Sun gave him. Will not replace it no matter what.
-Hoards all the gift bags to reuse next year (reduce, reuse, recycle)
-Cold out? You mean extra snuggle season? :)
-Is the maker of the Hot Chocolate :)
-Asks kids if they’ve been good this year, gives them candy if they say yes :)
-Helps Sun pick the mistletoe spot. Finds excuses to lure you over there.
-Told a kid Santa wasn’t real at least once, is sorry
-Favorite Christmas movie is The Santa Claus. He would 100% try to kill Santa so he could take his place if it were truly possible. :)
-Sneaks down on Christmas eve to put the gifts under the tree
-After Christmas Sales? You mean time to buy Sun his next ugly sweater?
-Would probably go caroling if invited
-Sledding! Snow ball fights! He’s so playful
Eclipse:
-Hates the crowds
-Christmas music? You mean the same three lines over and over? Pass.
-Tells kids Santa isn’t real. Tells parents they are setting their kids up for disappointment when they get mad.
-Christmas Movies? You mean the same three regurgitated plots over and over? Pass.
-Pretends decorating is a chore but actually likes it
-Moves the mistletoe around when Sun and Moon aren’t home so they can’t get smooches (evil)
-Owns one ugly sweater. Only wears it for ‘family pictures’ and then immediately puts it back in the very back of the closet
-Likes baking little treats to celebrate
-Buys gifts sporadically starting in August.
-Prefers receiving gifts, always overthinks what kind of gifts to give
-Opens gift like it owes him money or like it might explode, no inbetween.
-Actually loves the good cheer but hates how crowded places get
-Keeps mistletoe on him so he can have smooches whenever he wants :)
-Keeps all the handmade things he receives in a safe place and never uses them because he doesn’t want them to get ruined
-Not afraid to say he dislikes a gift, but usually just offers it back so it can be returned
-Mails out so many Christmas cards. To who? We may never know.
-Once filled Sun’s stocking with coal as a joke.
-Argues with Moon over who gets to lift the fave (tm) to put the star up on the tree
-Snow ball fights! Ice skating! Snow people! :)
-Loves wrapping gifts <3
-Daydreams about Christmas dates but never plans them
-Asks kids if they been good this year, if they say yes he tells them Santa will spare them... for now :)
And there’s the brainrot! Back to gift wrapping! <3

My MIL. What can I say?
She doesn’t like that we are in NY and she is in IL. She doesn’t get to see the Grandkids enough. But OMG does she spoil them.
Kids make an Amazon wish list each Xmas. Gram buys the entire list before other relatives can see it.
Every Holiday she sends treats. Entire Easter baskets, Cookies, Fudge.
Every Birthday they are buried in Gift cards.
But she went and did it now.
The kids are crushing it in school. Honors classes, all A’s. So Gram wanted the kids to be rewarded this summer. What did she do???
Last weekend the kids and I weren’t home when Gram and Wifey were on the phone. Gram asked where we were? We went to Stewart’s for ice cream. Most of you don’t know. Stewart’s is like a tricked out 7-11, convenience store. But 1000 times better. They constantly win best ice cream awards. Tons of flavors you never heard of before. They have hot dogs, pizzas, bakery goods, soups, that are all way above average. My kids love the ice cream and shakes.
After hearing of our location, Gram said nothing to my Wife. They finished talking, and Gram went to their website. Ordered each kid a $100 gift card for Stewart’s. The cards arrived today. I text Gram. She replies. Kids can have all the ice cream they want this summer for being good in school.
This is on top of the $200 in Visa Gift cards for vacation spending money she sent the kids.
I can’t believe how much she throws at the kids. She spoils them like crazy. A big reason is Spawnette is the ONLY girl born in the family. Both sides poured out a lot of boys. So she really goes off on my kids.
I just can’t believe she learned about Stewart’s and their ice cream addiction. We go very week, multiple times. But now I have someone else flipping the bill.
Guess where we going after school now?

In the festival spirit how are the trio spending the holidays
Xmas eve was last minute jobs, mostly peach being a busy body making sure things are just right for everyone, off on her own making preparations. Night comes and they curl up indoors, spend time together, drink, play board games, cards, joke around, get some rest, but not before one of them dozes off on the sofa.
The day of will be making sure everything’s fed and watered, work doesn’t stop for Christmas, hardly any staff around, all gone home for the holidays, it’s all on their shoulders. So a crazy amount of breakfasts to make, jobs to do. There’s a few patients in the lab, but luckily Pari doesn’t celebrate Christmas, so she’s able to cover that shift, keep patients happy and watched over. Big dinners for the islanders, gifts brought for as many as possible, even if it’s just a bunch of silly things. Greys at home sorting dinner out, getting the house cosy, plums out helping peach cater to the Pokemon, not that she’s any help in the kitchen at all. By night time, the girls will be exhausted, it’s a lot of work for one day, so a dinner would be welcomed! Peach prepped desert two days prior. They will all eat way too much and lie down on the floor/sofa and recover. Maybe watch a movie, open their gifts to each other, and drink too much. This gift giving includes their own Pokemon gifts too.
Plum grey and peach will all buy a gift for the team mons, and those who live in the house and are super close to the family, so it’s a big process, one they all enjoy.
Probably fall asleep early ish, together in a big pile.
Edit: Oh forgot to add, plums going home to explain the whole…’engaged’ thing to her family in a gentle way, probably between Christmas and new year sometimes, returning for a New Years party back on the island.

also my bf is being weird again….!!!! everyy time i hang out with snow (which has been a month or two apart) he gets weird with me again!!! he acts cold and short with me and its always like the next day. he swears im gonna cheat or not want him anymore, no matter how much i tell him that i wont and that i love him too much to think about wanting to leave him. like, i feel secure in our relationship and theres only a few things that could make me feel like its not. when he gets all anxious like this about us i feel like its bc he just doesnt feel fully secure with the relationship.. even tho weve been together for 4.5YeaRs. hes also had way more dreams than he should be having of me breaking up or leaving him. bc of his anxiety and fear of being cheated!!! like he gets upset bc they feel real in his dream and then he thinks what if its trueee. i feel like thats not fair to me in a way bc im not doing anything bad behind his back or seeking out someone else to make me happy. i also think maybe him feeling insecure with himself plays a factor into it. like maybe he feels like no one wants to stay with him or i dont love him anymore and he doesnt feel good about himself and then ends up suffering in his thoughts alone and becomes a hermit crab. i didnt mention anything to his mood yesterday bc i didnt wanna pester him with more to think about and i wont be able to see him in person for like a wk. i just wanted to seem fine..but maybe ill say something today. yesterday when i was contemplating on talking about it, i was going to be like howve you been, are you okay, do you still love me. mostly the do you still love me question bc seriously. so im also thinking that he saw snows bday post on ig since theyre not private and saw how they posted my card&drawing i did for them and ofc that made him feel a type of way. like, why is she making good art for someone else. i did it bc they didnt even want me to buy a gift for them or treat them or anything. they suggested to make something bc they like to display art in their room from other friends who have given them art. like the two people who i met the other day, they both create digital art of people. but thats why i made that drawing. aaand im planning on painting something for my other friend for her xmas gift. so i dont see giving my art as like a romantic gesture or anything, its just another way to give a personalized gift and it saves money lol. like, i just wanna shout “you have nothing to worry about!” i mean they were literally gushing to me about a guy they started seeing and they went on their first date yesterday and texted me about it and im just replying like im their hypewoman. i feel like this whole thing is making it feel like his worst nightmare and it shouldnt beeeee
edit: 12.14 / alright so i asked him “do you still love me?” and he says, “well yeah, nothing has happened yet to make me think otherwise” ………YET….. YET?!? like why are you beingggg like thiss to meee

Big Nick Energy: The Perfect Gift for Romance Novel Lovers
"Big Nick Energy" is a playful phrase that riffs on the popular term "Big Dick Energy" (BDE), adapting it to celebrate individuals named Nick or Nicholas. This humorous concept embodies confidence, charisma, and a positive attitude associated with people bearing this name.
Tumblr media
Buy now:19.95$
The term suggests that Nicks possess a natural, effortless cool – a quiet self-assurance that doesn't need to be loudly proclaimed. It implies that these individuals exude a certain magnetism and charm, drawing others to them through their personality rather than any overt actions.
Characteristics of Big Nick Energy might include:
Unshakeable self-confidence without arrogance
A laid-back, go-with-the-flow attitude
The ability to laugh at oneself and not take life too seriously
Natural leadership qualities
A knack for making others feel comfortable and valued
Resilience in the face of challenges
This phrase could be used in various contexts, from light-hearted banter among friends to social media posts celebrating someone named Nick. It might appear on novelty items like t-shirts, mugs, or posters as a fun gift for Nicks or as a way for them to embrace their namesake's supposed qualities.
It's important to note that Big Nick Energy is not exclusive to those named Nick – it's more about embodying the positive traits associated with the name. Anyone can channel their inner Nick and exude this energy, regardless of their actual name.
While humorous, the concept also speaks to the broader idea of nominal determinism – the notion that people's names can influence their personalities or life outcomes. In this case, it playfully suggests that being named Nick comes with its own special brand of charisma and cool.

Funny Xmas Christmas is a lighthearted approach to the holiday season that embraces humor and playfulness. This concept combines traditional Christmas elements with comedic twists, creating a more relaxed and entertaining atmosphere during the festive period.
It might include quirky decorations like Santa stuck in a chimney, reindeer with googly eyes, or elves in compromising positions. Humorous Christmas cards with witty puns or silly illustrations are also popular. Gift-giving often involves gag gifts or presents with amusing packaging.

Holiday parties under this theme might feature ugly sweater contests, funny gift exchanges, or comedic holiday-themed games. Even food and drinks can get the funny treatment, with oddly shaped cookies or cocktails with amusing names.
Funny Xmas Christmas allows people to enjoy the holiday spirit while not taking traditions too seriously, encouraging laughter and joy during the season.
Merry Christmas Polish, or "Wesołych Świąt" in Polish, refers to the unique Christmas traditions and celebrations in Poland. This festive season is rich with cultural customs, including the breaking of the opłatek (Christmas wafer) on Christmas Eve, known as Wigilia. The holiday is marked by elaborate feasts featuring traditional dishes like pierogi, borscht, and carp. Poles decorate their homes with

evergreen branches and set an extra place at the table for unexpected guests. Carols, or kolędy, are sung with great enthusiasm. Gift-giving is often associated with St. Nicholas Day on December 6th, though presents are also exchanged on Christmas Eve. The celebration emphasizes family, faith, and Polish heritage.

I Did It Again
I ended that last blog post with "until tomorrow", forgetting that I'd have a house full of crazy for the weekend. The Edgewater gang arrived Friday after school and the grandgirl kept me entertained through Saturday. We looked through toy catalogs wondering what Santa might bring (costumes, lots of costumes). We painted and heavily glittered a wooden Christmas tree for her to give to her other grandma in Tennessee. She'll be down there for Thanksgiving so she might as well arrive bearing gifts, right? We played many hours of "Princess School" (Grancy's trick for practicing reading), an equal amount of time with Barbies and, of course, fairies. We read several books and explored places on her globe. Time well spent. It could also explain why I slept like I was in a coma last night. Anywho, fun weekend and now I'm prepping for Matthew to come home for Thanksgiving. He'll arrive Saturday and depart the following Saturday. I can't wait! I always get excited when Matt comes home because when we're together weird things happen. Sometimes it's a kooky encounter with someone, sometimes it's natural phenomena, sometimes it's just something we screw up that becomes hilarious. Whatever it is, I enjoy it. Also, I'm looking forward to roasting the bird and making all of those forbidden, fattening side dishes. None of us need them but we all want them. I finished designing our Xmas cards and ordered those, I was able to stack two coupons and get them for over 50% off. Score! I'm browsing websites, hoping to find the perfect birthday gift for my dear sister. I want it to be special. What do you get the gal that has everything? A purse to put it in? Nah. It has to be more special than that. No one on my Christmas list seems to know what they want to find under the tree. That makes it very hard to give sweet surprise to the people you love. I want to make everybody happy, and make Christmas merry, but I also don't want to waste money buying things that won't be used, worn, or read, ya' know? We're all of an age where we like what we like and it's often hard to choose for another.
Don't even get me started on my mother. She'll be 88 in March, is probably in better shape than I am, stays active mentally and physically, and doesn't need a darn thing. She doesn't want her house cluttered with "stuff", and would probably prefer to choose her own things anyway. You'd think that paying for a service might be a good idea - yard service (she's got one, but still does most of the work herself), maid service (she wouldn't allow it), meal deliveries (she'd tell me she's perfectly capable of making her own meals, and she is)...and I don't think she wants to be a member of any fruit of the month or jam of the month clubs. She's a voracious reader, but chooses her own books. I usually resort to getting her a gift card for books, and then various small things that I think she might enjoy. I always make a big batch of Cranberry Noel cookies for her, and at least I know she likes those. But what small things does she need this year...new slippers? a warm robe? She's not your typical 87/88 year old, so she's not a candidate for any of those "elder helper" gadgets. She's loaded, so she doesn't need monetary gifts. It's looking more and more like she'll be getting a kitten from me. I mean, isn't that the perfect gift? It's what I'd like for every holiday. Just kidding, I'd never give a pet as a gift unless it was specifically requested. Please don't email me. I'm at a loss, so I guess I'll just wing it. Seems like every year I am less on my game for the holidays. I used to have a plan of attack and exhausted myself making everything pretty, sparkly, delicious, and merry. Is this normal? Did I burn out? I still want everything to be perfect, I just don't seem to have the drive. Part of it probably has to do with living in Denton. Nowhere to shop, not much is decorated, no holiday music playing on hidden speakers in mall parking lots, etc. - no cheer! There will be one small Christmas tree lot at the fire station, proceeds go to the volunteer fire department. Ridgley will have a Christmas festival that will be so dark you can hardly se your hand in front of your face. I'm hoping that we can go to Chestertown's Dickens Christmas Festival. I'll have a hard time not comparing it to the one we used to go to in Franklin. Still, it should be fun. I refuse to become a Grinch because of geography. I'm Team Whoville!
Tumblr media
In other news, I'm scheduled for my flu shot and Covid booster on Wednesday. Hopefully that'll make me bulletproof. Even better, Centreville (about 20 miles from us) has opened a brand spankin' new YMCA with a POOL! They've got water aerobics, Zumba classes, an indoor walking track and all sorts of stuff. It all sounds very promising. We're going to go over and check it out. Because we're old it's a pretty cheap monthly fee. I'm sure if we join that's when the library will finally call and offer me a job. I may have finally found a way to fill my time and get some exercise. I should probably stress to the library that I'd really like that tasty part-time position. Alright, I won't subject you to any more of my rambling, disjointed thoughts. Just thought I'd check-in. Maybe I'll have something of interest to share tomorrow, but so far my plans are to pull up a bunch of stonecrop and replace it with some of the mums I bought this fall. I can't imagine that will make for an exciting blog post unless I accidentally uncover a next of hornets or something. Let's all hope that doesn't happen. I'm off to have a little dinner and catch up on some true crime viewing. I'll meet you back here tomorrow. Until then, stay safe, stay well, and send some Christmas spirit my way! XOXO, Nancy

Okay so loving the notes, tags etc except that one guy who lost his shit for no reason (blocked lol).
I don't want to direct post any tags when ppl said they might delete later BUT they are directly related to some things I didn't elaborate on in the above post but are my personal views on the matter. Also I wanted to respond to some other tags so yanno!
First:
For context I converted to Judaism as an adult, grew up with culturally xtian parents (my mom is like...a witchy lapsed mexican-catholic. Dad is a literal WASP, but also into paganism for awhile there. Idk.) Anyways my mom LOVES Christmas. So so much. She did grow up poor/lower working class. (My mom loves Xmas so much that she got married on December 23rd because the Catholic priest wouldn't do Dec 24th. ...Christmas got a little ruined for her when they divorced. I think it's finally getting better again many many years later.)
The point is, I Grew Up With Santa Is Real and Magical. 100%! And as a baby/little kid (under 7), my parents were still starting out, struggling with debt/student loans, making bad credit card decisions, etc. My mom worked fast food jobs.
but like, eventually, my dad stopped serving in the army, got an MBA on some of those loans he had, and went into managing computer engineers and with time, we became solidly middle class. I was about 7 when my parents bought their first house (instead of us living w/family or in apartments or army apartments), and then my parents divorced when I was about 14? 15? Then I got to live on the literal poverty line because divorce! Isn't that fun?
Anyways the point is that it was my mom, who grew up poor, that had the most investment in Santa. I was talking to a friend last night and she was like "yeah I mean, I eventually figured out people's handwriting so..." and I shook my head like. "No my mom always used her non-dominant hand as Santa. She changed her handwriting." My mom Believes in Santa, to be clear. Literally her philosophy is that Santa is real when we make him real, because Santa is a role — a thing parents can be/do, and the love and experience and wonder of childhood is all real, even if Kris Kringle, actual man from the North Pole is a fairy tale and made up." Her stance is that parents are "Santa's helpers" insofar as parents/guardians fulfilling Santa's role, passing on the story, etc all "help" Santa act, & that's not really a lie. It's a fairy tale, it's fiction, but Santa is just a collective belief that people take up and enact and that isn't a lie.
I suspect my mom is actually more sad that if I had children I don't want to do Santa than like she cares about me currently being like "I don't believe Jesus was a Messiah even a little bit."
Like. When I was maybe 3? My grandpa dressed as Santa to show up to the Christmas party for myself and my cousins/my mom's baby cousins. Picture the most adorable Mexican abuelito in the FULL mall Santa get up with a GIANT red sack for all the little kids and also his face was powered white so y'know. I was three. I didn't see under the massive white beard and wig I knew him. I met Santa and he was DEFINITELY real. We didn't have a lot of money yet but also this was the 90's and it's not like three year olds could even expect a $300 tablet or whatever.
My parents financial situation improving did mean "Santa" gifts could be a bigger deal as I got older, but they also imposed a 1 Santa gift limit more or less. Again, probably because my mom grew up poor and did not want me to feel better than other kids who got less but were just as "good." I was a very skeptical child so I'm not really sure how long I bought into Santa for, but I definitely Did Not Bring It Up even though I was fairly certain Santa was Mom for years. I mean, if Santa is real, then why do we go and buy angel/Santa gifts for other families and kids? So it's not hard to figure out. Especially since kids inevitably compare everything from gift value to "the rules of how Santa works at my house."
And when we'd finally confirmed I did indeed, Know The Truth (and wouldn't spoil it for my 8 years younger brother) I would be tasked with helping wrap the gifts we bought for other kids as Santa. I still remember helping my uncle do a Santa run to deliver the gifts we'd got to a single working mom cried in the parking lot when we helped her load up her car with presents.
And while I think that's lovely and we should absolutely give charity and help others in need and even just give charity that isn't only practical but instead includes stuff that is valued by joy and delight — I think Santa doesn't have to be the way to do that, and I also think that with the advent of highly expensive digital toys and gifts (above and beyond a barbie dreamhouse), "Santa" is now fully unable to escape capitalist and classist limitations.
Santa used to bring maybe a small toy and then maybe some "sweets" like some oranges, candy canes, etc in stockings, to most kids. But the divide between kids gets bigger and bigger, and the morality of kids gets tied to how much money their parents can afford to spend in fulfilling Santa and that's so deeply shitty to me.
As an adult, I am utterly disillusioned by Santa. Not the joy of parents participating, not kids who get toys they wanted. Not even because parents are lying, because big whoop. But because the fantasy is less and less feasible for kids whose parents don't have money. Because I worked for a bank financial assistance dept trying to help people for awhile, and when you see hundreds of people who go thousands of dollars into debt to maintain Christmas, it sucks!
It's a literal cycle SO MANY Americans go through btw, like to the point where banks/creditors all *know* to account for it. Debt goes up in Nov/Dec for Christmas, people struggle financially in Dec/January, and then Feb-April is when folks try to recover with their tax returns (because a lot of people gamble they will receive enough return in order to pay off or down the debt they couldn't afford). And when your job is "helping people who are financially struggling with getting out of the hole, understanding their budget better," lemme tell you, no one wants to be told: "look, you can't afford this kind of Christmas. It's setting you up to start the new year underwater financially, every single year. It makes you stressed and miserable, and you can't always manage to catch up with your tax return. This is unsustainable and is something you have the power to completely change in order to achieve way more stability for you and your family. It won't fix everything but wow is this gonna help!"
So you don't say that directly. You talk generally about cutting down unnecessary expenses (people rarely willingly consider their Christmas spending as unnecessary), about the plan after the tax return comes in, about how to cut costs of the expenses you do still have.
This isn't the fault of the concept of Santa, but like, Santa is part of this cycle now. And people are MISERABLE doing this debt cycle. Lots of people hate that they feel they HAVE to rack up all this debt to buy big presents and then even more santa presents and they often don't even believe in this holiday religiously! Sure, thoughtful presents are nice, but if everyone was like "actually I can't afford $2,000 in debt this year to make a big Christmas." Most people would feel a lot better! Depression due to Christmas holiday stress is real and measurable and people who know that and hate how it makes them feel STILL keep doing all of it.
So it sucks, Christmas's commercialization and Santa's accidental classism is just...truly awful.
I hate tying morality to class, and I hate making poor kids feel unworthy, I hate that people feel obligated to prepare to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars.
...parents lying to kids about Santa or the tooth fairy doesn't bother me, but like. Santa's elves probably aren't even unionized! Terrible
Do you ever just get obsessed with how cultural Christians (esp atheist or agnostic ones) often openly choose to maintain Santa Claus for their kids?
Like think about this with me:
A group of people who don't actively align themselves with religious life, religious institutions (churches) or other traditions, and may even be total atheists STILL sometimes choose to do Santa Claus for their children, because THEY had Santa Claus as children.
The parents give their child a folk demigod (lesser deity?) of outsized importance to children SPECIFICALLY, and teach them the demigod is definitely totally real. They maintain this active belief as long as possible through childhood. They may encourage and actively engage in this belief with their children moreso than anything else involving the religion it comes from (aside from perhaps, the easter bunny). They know Santa isn't real, does not exist, and is a fiction.
They know their children will learn this demigod is a lie. Subconsciously or consciously, the child then learns that Santa Claus is really only as real as the parent intention to make him real, and the child belief in that truth. The child grows up. Knows Santa is a fiction. And then they make Santa for their children too, because that's the only real thing about Santa — parents knowing it's a fiction and then passing it on anyways.
I just like...am deeply fascinated by this unique cultural training of accepting that the Santa deity isn't dead or anything so extreme, and even though he's made up, he is still extremely important and the fiction gets passed on while explicitly knowing and acting upon the fiction. Parents have to be Santa, they can't just encourage belief and sit back. No no, they must actively CREATE Santa's existence for the belief to work. And they do this willingly!
It's not that I think believing in a myth is unusual in any religion (like we don't need to believe hundreds of thousands of Israelites fled Egypt all at once to observe passover or even to think some Hebrews did flee Egypt and the legend developed from there, or w/e), so much as like, this is an incredibly obvious and well known one that every adult Knows 100% is Not Real, not even based on any kind of reality or possible actual legend, Santa doesn't have all those powers, he does not come to your house or get your wishlist (prayers).
No adult has a pure and genuine belief that Santa is a real being who visits and brings children gifts.
I just want to study everyone who actively is like "I don't believe in God or go to church but like, I'll obviously still do Santa for the kids, that's fun."
(Regina George voice: so you agree? Religion doesn't need to be grounded in imperial facts of science in order to provide substantial benefits to people, foster positive emotions and connections within communities, and for people to derive meaning from it? It doesn't matter if God is real, if you yourself make the benefits of God being real happen for yourself and others?")

My brother sent me a Christmas gift. It was a 12$ bag of weed gummies, some Xmas tree ornaments for my non-existent tree and old Halloween candy (some of it opened and taped shut). I have many pets so I don’t have a tree. This should not be new information. I have had many pets for years. I’m pretty sure he paid more on shipping than he did on the contents of the gift. One of the ornaments was made by his children. The other a small glass red bird. I am guessing the red bird is meant to remind me of our dead grandmother who loved cardinals. Just the thing at Christmas. A reminder of a dead relative with nothing thoughtful about who I am or what I may like. Zero thought or effort went in to this gift. He’s shipped the contents of a junk drawer to me and called it a gift. He and his wife are also bigot rednecks and I am not. I think this may be the last straw in our relationship. I am mailing gifts for all three of his children, plus him and his wife Xmas gifts and birthday cards for two December birthdays in their household. I will no longer be engaging with people who go out of their way to make me feel like shit about myself. I don’t need candy. Especially old, previously opened candy. I struggle with my weight. I don’t need ornaments for a tree I don’t put up. I can buy my own weed gummies if I want them. This gift was not given with me in mind it was given with the intent of meeting an obligation. If you aren’t interested in knowing me or considering me then why are we in each others lives? Looks like we won’t be anymore.

Billsgiving Buffalo Thanksgiving Christmas Shirt
If this question were asked a Billsgiving Buffalo Thanksgiving Christmas Shirt of weeks later, I’d probably have photos to show. As it stands, you’ll have to put up with my descriptions. We don’t tend to do anything radically different to the rest of the world where Christmas decorations are concerned. Santa’s still wearing a big red suit, there are reindeer, even snowmen and plenty of artificial snow – some of which looks like cobwebs to me, but there you are. We still have Christmas trees covered in tinsel and with stars or angels on the top of them, depending on your preference. I’ve occasionally seen decorations which make a bit of a nod to where we actually are in the world. Santa-on-a-surfboard, kind of an idea. Several years ago, we had a tradition of driving around looking at the Christmas lights other people had put up, and I can definitely recall seeing images of koalas and kangaroos with Santa hats and the like. Overall, though, Christmas decorations tend to look like they’re from the northern hemisphere, since a lot of our “Christmas cues” come from that part of the world, regardless of how warm the day itself may actually be.

I was in Penang at some point in 2019, saw these great little wooden keychains at the pasar malam and figured they would make for some really neato Xmas card trades! (Had to pay tourist prices for them though |D ) Making them shaker keychains was kinda an afterthought addition, but it was a lot of fun combing through various scrapbooking pieces to see what i could use to fit the characs :D
Also for once in my life one of these made it to their intended recipient before Xmas. Should’ve bought Lotto after i found that out XD
Made from: 3D wooden keychain, matte photo paper, scrapbooking knickknacks (eg: made a pancake by painting a split pin, donut from a foam 0 etc lol)
