Every AoS couple has the person who can cook and the person who can't for the life of them:
Can cook: Coulson, Daisy, Jemma, Bobbi, Mack
Can't cook for the life of them: May, Sousa, Fitz, Hunter, Elena

So Marvel made Agents of SHIELD not technically “MCU Canon” and in the show there are discontinuities revolving around Thanos.
I’m bored and just somehow got sucked back into AOS despite being in like three other fandoms, so I’m just going to put down my headcanons for the differences.
Everything under the tag because it got a bit long.
MCU:
Project Deathlok is a failure and John Garrett dies somewhere in a secret base.
Without anyone’s support, Raina’s persuasive ability can only get her so far. Her death appears in the newspapers as an open-and-shut murder case.
Ward wastes whatever potential he could have had in the prison system. He’s unfortunate enough to have been in New York in 2012 and an errant blast from a Chitauri ship kills him.
Ironically, in the same city, at the same time, a twenty-four-year-old hacker stays in front of Stark Tower just a few moments too long. She dies as Skye, buried beneath a pile of rubble.
Her father never finds what he’s looking for, and the SHIELD agents are just a little faster. Jiaying never makes it out of that village alive.
By a miracle, Calvin Zabo survives and clings to life just long enough to find a certain Daniel Whitehall. The bastardized serum works just long enough for them to kill each other.
Coulson dies on the operating table, unwilling to be dragged back to life.
Melinda May stays behind her desk and is killed fighting off a swarm of HYDRA agents. The Mockingbird falls, and so does a mechanical engineer by the name of Alphonso Mackenzie.
Fitzsimmons die in an unmarked grave. For all their brilliance and usefulness, they’re too loyal.
The Inhumans see what happens to their kind and the doors of the Afterlife never open again. Terrigen never falls into the sea, and Elena Rodriguez isn’t fast enough to dodge the bullets.
There’s no backlash against the Inhumans. For all the world knows, they don’t exist.
Lance Hunter continues on with his life, but the life of a mercenary is a dangerous one. He’s very good, but not everyone can outrun death.
Without the new SHIELD discretely taking down HYDRA cells, the Avengers become more involved. HYDRA agents, like Ruby, are killed in the ensuing destruction.
But SHIELD agents that should have survived are killed too. Davis and Piper both die as humans. Casualties aren’t just a result of HYDRA. Antoine Triplett dies securing the Gravitonium, and after SHIELD falls, its left in the Fridge, forgotten.
The monolith finds no sacrifice, and Hive still waits on an almost lifeless planet for a chance.
Ghost Rider never hides the Darkhold, but Agatha Harkness discovers quite an interesting read.
AIDA and the Framework never exist, and Radcliffe is only ever known as the eccentric transhumanist.
Without the Destroyer of Worlds and the Inhumans, the Kree never intervene again, Captain Marvel’s warning is more than enough to deter the Empire... for now.
The Shrike continue to grow to be a problem, and eventually, galactical superpowers intervene. On Earth, Kamar-taj steps in, quietly taking care of the problem.
Chroncya-2 is never destroyed, and the Chronicoms remain peaceful.
SHIELD never recovers, and half the universe dies.
AOS:
The Sokovia Accords are simultaneously better and worse. More people are fearful, but not many will be so brazen as to announce such radical and violent ideas to the face of an Inhuman delegate.
Those who signed the Accords are pushed to make it better, to make it more humane, and to make it more of a support system for those who suddenly find themselves with powers.
Thanos invades Xandar, expecting an easy fight. It’s suddenly not so easy when the Destroyer of Worlds and a person made of energy punch their way through his fleet. Xandar is wrecked, but the planet and its people still live on.
The Asgardians face Ragnarök, but without Thanos in their way, settle down in Norway, further contributing to the widespread changes made to the Sokovia Accords in favor of superhumans.
Captain America begins an “Out of Time” club, and eventually, the Avengers are peer-pressured into reforming.

My Fanfiction
I have fanfiction posted on Wattpad, Quotev, and Archive of Our Own, and I thought I'd post links to them all here. This is my Marvel side blog, but has the username of my fanfic sites so I'll put my non-Marvel stuff here too, maybe reblog it by other blogs more associated with that fandom.
Two Worlds, One Goal
Fandoms: MCU, Riordanverse
Pairings: Percy/Annabeth, Jason/Piper, Frank/Hazel, Clint/Laura
Description: These two worlds have the same goal: survive. The veil separating two worlds is thin, which means interaction. If all of the heroes don't work together, then both of their worlds go KA-BLOOM! Luckily, some of the best heroes are the ones in this book. Percy Jackson. Captain America. Jason Grace. Black Panther. Annabeth Chase. Star-Lord. And the list goes on.
Additional Notes: This is the first fanfiction I started writing, so it kind of sucks, I will admit it. It also was supposed to be super long and all, but I have no motivation to continue it. So I'm going to finish the next chapter because that'll wrap things up a little better than just leaving it how it is now. I may come back to it, I may not. And, honestly, I'm putting it here, but I'm not really recommending it since the writing sucks, but, hey, if you want to, here you go.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
The Crisis
Fandoms: LEGO Ninjago
Pairings: Jay/[Y/N], Zane [Y/N], Kai/[Y/N], Cole/[Y/N], Lloyd/[Y/N]
Description: You first meet the ninja because of a tragic event. You don't think you'll ever meet again, and you don't care. You shut yourself out of the world and swear to never love again. But another unfortunate circumstance throws you and the ninja into each other's lives. You are fighting for survival, but realize something. You have a huge crush on each of the ninja, and all of them have huge crushes on you. What are you going to do? Go with Jay? Cole? Lloyd? Zane? Kai? Stay true to your oath?
Additional Notes: So, this is a fic with five endings. Basically, you choose which of the Ninja you end up with in the end. Also, one of my first, I'm almost finished! At one point I wanted to do five sequels (one for each Ninja), but I'm not as into Ninjago anymore, so I don't think that'll happen.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Cosplayer to Vigilante
Fandoms: Arrow
Pairings: None
Description: Liberty Davis is just a typical fangirl who loves superheroes. Despite the millions of comics, games, movies, and TV series in existence, CW's Arrow, based off of DC Comic's Green Arrow, is her favorite. A trip to Comic-Con gives her an unexpected surprise as she meets the Roy Harper. With Roy's help, Liberty will become someone else, something else. She'll go from zero to hero, from cosplayer to vigilante.
Additional Notes: Fun fact: Wattpad does these contests every year, I entered the first chapter in, and I did really well! There were three rounds, and I made it into the second. Unfortunately, I was grounded then so I was unable to enter the next round. But still! Liberty is a demisexual lesbian.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Captive
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Loki/[Y/N], Wanda/Vision, Scott/Hope, Tony/Pepper, Peter/Gamora
Description: You are the Blaze, newest member of the Avengers. Loki comes back to Earth, and gets what he wants: you. With magic keeping you from using your powers and Asgardian ropes binding you to a chair, Loki has you in his grasp. Loki treats you with a surprisingly large amount of respect, which only manages to keep you alert. Will the Avengers find you? Why does Loki want you? And is he really the bad guy you think he is?
Additional Notes: I would say that this is probably the best of my fics, and also probably my most popular. Wattpad was the first website I was on that I got into, and there are a lot of x readers there, so that's what I wrote because I knew that audience liked it. But it has done very well on Quotev and Ao3 as well. It's not completed yet, and I think you can tell that I get better at writing between the first and most recent chapter. For all of you Loki fans out there, it does feature flashbacks to Loki's time at Sanctuary. There are also lines the Avengers say that show how they completely misunderstand him (someone says something about him faking his death five times. In reality only one of those events was him faking his death, the others he thought he was dead as well). I totally cherrypick the canon I want (as one does). Also Loki is not killed by Thanos in the Infinity War-esque arc so that's a plus. Loki is also confirmed to be biromantic asexual outside of the story (though eventually there will be a discussion about sexuality in-story). I'm thinking I'll make him demiromantic or greyromantic or otherwise aro-spec, I'm just not sure what yet. There will be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sort of stuff in it, but I don't think you absolutely have to watch AoS.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Assemble [Heroes Book I]
Fandoms: MCU and Arrowverse
Pairings: Tony/Pepper, Dig/Lyla
Description: When the world is at stake, Nick Fury and Amanda Waller must assemble a team. A team of superheroes. To see if they could become something more, and fight the battles no one else ever could. Who do they assemble? Steve Rogers aka Captain America, the soldier out of time. John Diggle aka Spartan, the soldier turned vigilante. Thor, the god of thunder. Ray Palmer aka Atom, the shrinking scientist. Tony Stark aka Iron Man, the billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Laurel Lance aka Black Canary, the high pitched assassin. But where is the threat from? That's the mystery.
Additional Notes: Basically, the Arrowverse has multiverse stuff, and the idea was that in one universe, the Arrowverse and the MCU were combined. I think that it's pretty good. The chapters in Steve's perspective are depressing, but that's fine, I guess. I don't really have motivation to write this, much less other books, and am honestly considering discontinuing it, but that's fine. Read if you want, don't if you want, it's on hiatus.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Just a Dream?
Fandoms: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Pairings: Obi-Wan/Satine
Description: Obi-Wan Kenobi wakes up to find Anakin bearing news of Duchess Satine's death. How does Obi-Wan react?
Additional Notes: Kind of busted this out one day on a road trip. Don't really remember it. It exists, don't know if this one-shot is very good.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Psych
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Steve/[Y/N], Peter/[Y/N], Thor/[Y/N]
Description: You are an avid fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You find yourself unexplainably in the world of your fandom. You know one thing: you can't directly tell anyone what happens in the future. Knowing you still have to warn the people of this world, you make a conspiracy theory blog that claims Norse mythology is real, Captain America is alive, and Peter Quill was abducted by aliens. When SHIELD meets Thor and finds Captain America in ice, Phil Coulson comes knocking on your door, demanding to know how you figured it out. Taking inspiration from Psyche, you claim you are a psychic that can see the future. And given what has happened, SHIELD eventually believes you. After having run-ins with Steve Rogers, Thor, and Peter Quill, you start to have feelings for the Marvel Chrises. But do they feel the same way about you?
Additonal Notes: This is a choose your own ending fic, which is a big part of why I write it as an x reader. If you have watched Psych, that was the inspiration. I watched the first episode and got the idea for this fic. I just need to remember to start writing pineapples into it. This and Captive are probably the most popular fics of mine. I will warn you that this starts kind of slow. There will be some limited AoS stuff. I'm also told that Loki is amazing in this and I had people literally beg me to make him a love interest too (but this is a Chrises fic, not a Toms fic).
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Lynx
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Steve/Tori
Description: "Half of the universe: gone. Half of my friends: gone. We failed. We couldn't stop him. We couldn't stop Thanos. My name is Tori Lowe. Since the day I was born, I've been different. I planned on hiding it, but fate had other plans. I joined a team, a team of people like me. We thought we could save the world. Through all the chaos, betrayal, battles, and fractures, I've walked back alive. I know it's because of the love of my life, Steve Rogers. The past week has been hectic. Half of everything is gone. Maybe I should back up farther. After all, a lot of things lead up to the Decimation."
Additional Notes: Tori is an OC, and idea for her literally came to be because I like a lot of Black Panther's feline fight stuff. The first chapter is really long and kind of just background info for Tori, Tommy, Zach (other OCs), and shows how Tori met Steve. After that you have a time skip to CA:TWS. The style of the story is that Tori is writing about the heck she went through as a means to cope after Infinity War, and then she adds to the book after the events of Endgame. So I kind of purposely write it in...interesting ways since this is more of a journal, but over time Tori becomes a better writer as she writes more and more (kind of like how I get to be a better writer. Yes, I just came up with a in-story reason for the differences in my writing caliber over time). Tori is bisexual.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Angelic
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Loki/Mandy
Description: Mandy Angelle was just a typical British drama teacher at Westminster High. She never expected anything exciting to happen to her. But one day, she accidentally places herself in the same building as the God of Mischief. This surprise meeting will change her future forever. Will it make her life better or worse?
Additional Notes: This first starts during The Avengers. Basically, it goes into how Loki is the secret hero of the Marvel movies. In this, he wasn't controlled by the scepter, but he was tortured by the Chitauri, and he was planning on losing so that Thanos would lose two Infinity Stones. Loki is genderfluid, biromantic, and asexual in this story (and I'm considering aro-spec in some way). So far, it has been confirmed in the story Loki is genderfluid (I don't think that exact term is used, but it is highly implied that he is genderfluid because he says he is sometimes a man and sometimes a woman. He didn't say he was non-binary at times because he was talking to Mandy, who is from Earth, and he wasn't sure how she would take it considering *gestures at the queerphobia in the world*). Mandy is bisexual, though not confirmed yet.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Stargazing
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Peter/Rebekah
Description: Peter Quill was not the only Terran the Ravagers took, they also took a girl named Rebekah Black. Peter and Rebekah have always been close, being the only two Terran Ravagers. Eventually though, their relationship develops into something bigger.
Additional Notes: Rebekah is Jewish, so that's fun. A thing for her is attempting to worship in an environment where she is the only Jew. Also there is an inkling of a chance I'll discontinue/go on hiatus, but much less of a chance than the other fics where I said this.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Necromancy
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Stephen/Annette
Description: Annette joins the sorcerers. Never did she expect for Stephen Strange to meet her and talk to her. At first, they both are pricks, but they warm up to each other. The duo study the Infinity Stones together. And what happens when romantic sparks are released?
Additional Notes: Again, AoS stuff. And lots of domestic things actually between them, which is nice. Only a few chapters are out, and we haven't gotten the good stuff yet. Annette is demisexual? I mix up the sexualities in this and the next fic.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Let Me Help
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Bucky/Jennifer
Description: Jennifer King has had her telepathic and empathetic abilities as long as she can remember. They come to good use when she meets the Winter Soldier, broken and lost, terrified of himself and Hydra. How will she help Bucky? Will she end up in prison for it? And as time goes on, what will happen? And what of romantic attractions?
(You can probably tell by now I'm either horrible at descriptions or slightly less horrible at descriptions).
Additional Notes: Like I said, Jennifer might be demisexual, or it might be Annette, or they might both be, I don't remember right now. I'll update this page when I figure it out. I will someday write an alternate version of this fic that will be much, much darker and will have lots and lots of AoS stuff. Like you'll have to watch AoS for that one.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
Band Kids
Fandoms: Any And All
Pairings: Any And All
Description: High school band is interesting, to say the least. I'm sure the rest of the band kids here agree with me that band is something truly special. We all have had crazy and amazing experiences because of a class we take where we blow air through metal tubes. And lots of us here are big in fandom. So why not combine these two beautiful parts of our lives? This book is a compilation of one-shots. These one-shots are AUs of different fandoms taking place in high school concert band, orchestra, jazz band, percussion, marching band, color guard, or whatever other similar ensemble you choose. You are absolutely welcome to submit one-shots of your own! Instructions on how to do so in the first chapter.
Additional Notes: No one-shots are published yet. I haven't even started writing them yet, I only published early in case anyone else wanted to write any. Just check out the info on how to submit if you want to (I think for the options to submit on Tumblr it only lists my main @cowboysrappin but you can absolutely DM this blog (@lokigodofaces) if that is easier for you). It's not up on Ao3 yet since there are built in functions for author's notes there and the first chapter is really just a big author's note.
Wattpad Quotev
Snickers
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: None
Description: In Stuttgart, Germany, Loki runs into a man named Tom who hands him a candy bar.
Additional Notes: This was my inspiration. That's right, a meme from this very site. Basically, this is a one shot about how one bite of a Snickers bar was enough to tear down the effects of the mind stone. So it's a joke, but nevertheless I wrote it.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3 Tumblr
Anti-Sex Bed
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: None
Description: A host of Lokis competing in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics work together to use any means necessary (other than sex) to destroy a cardboard anti-sex bed.
Additional Notes: Okay, so obviously sex is mentioned but never in detail. And no sex actually happens either. Also, it's never straight up said, but consider all Lokis to be asexual. Additionally, this is Loki, so pronouns are all over the place. I kind of just through in a he or a she or a they whenever I needed a pronoun and moved on. So Loki is genderqueer in whatever way you choose to make him here.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3 Tumblr
Astronomical Love
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: Loki/Tesseract
Description: The Tesseract is intrigued by Loki, but Thanos wants both of them.
Additional Notes: Part of Tessember 2021. Very short chapters. Kind of impulsive of me. No idea how this will turn out.
Wattpad Quotev Ao3
2012
Fandoms: MCU
Pairings: None
Description: Instead of ending up near the Lighthouse in 2017, Deke Shaw time travels to Stark Tower right after the Battle of New York.
Additional Notes: I thought the concept was funny. One shot. Crack.

This Is Home | Connor Brashier
A/n: I know I said I wasn’t going to upload this week, but I finally got the inspiration to write Back When part 2. And I couldn’t hold it for any longer.
Summary: there’s one thing that Connor has yet to give you, but now here’s his chance, no matter how the opportunity presented itself.
Warnings: it’s angsty, but very fluffy consecutively???
Word count: 4.3k exactly (oops)
***
“Momma, Daddy, look what I made!” Reid comes into the kitchen, holding up his latest drawing.
“That looks great, buddy. What is it?” I ask, looking back at our son.
“It’s us. See, there’s you and momma. You’re holding hands because you love each other. And that’s me and Pip.”
“Is that a dog next to your sister?”
“Yeah, that’s Grizzly.”
“Uncle Dylan and Auntie Lala’s dog, Grizzly?”
“Yes… I like him. Can we get a dog?” he asks so nonchalantly. “I’d name him Cookie. I like cookies. And I like dogs, so it feels right.”
y/n andI can’t help but laugh. “For only being seven, this boy knows that he wants,” I whisper in my wife’s ear.
“He gets that from you.”
“So can we get a dog?” he asks again.
Y/n looks at me and I shrug, “I wouldn’t mind.”
“Daddy and I will talk about it, Reid. I’m not saying no, but we have to discuss it first, yeah? Is that okay?” She asks as her phone rings from beside her.
He nods happily, “Okay!”
I pat his head and y/n answers her call, “Hey, Mom, what’s up?”
“Grandma!”
“Hold on, buddy. Let Momma talk,” I say to our boy, holding him against my leg as I watch his mother.
“Y/n, baby. I have to tell you something.” I can hear her mom say from the other end of the line. I’ve never understood how she could listen to a voice that loud. I don’t hear the next thing, but I see the color drain from my girl’s face as she turns away from us.
“What do you mean Gus passed away?”
I suck in a breath, “Buddy, can you go watch TV in the living room for a minute?”
“Mom, tell me you’re kidding.” she begs, reaching for anything to steady herself. My arm is the closest thing she finds.
“I’m so sorry, baby.” her mother says on the other line.
“Connor,” She cries, holding her phone against her chest.
My hand is already on her waist. “I’m right here, love.” She hands me the phone.
“Can you -?”
“Yeah, come here,” I take her phone and pull her closer to me, her head against my chest. “Mrs. y/l/n. What’s going on?”
She wraps her arms tighter around my waist and I press a kiss to her forehead as her mom fills me in.
“When is it? Okay… no, yeah. I’ll make sure she’s there… Yes, we’ll take off work… Do they need anything? No, don’t worry about it, we’ll call Velma, get everything figured out… Yeah, thank you… Love you too. Bye.” I toss her phone gently on the counter and wrap my arms around her. She can’t help the choked sob that leaves her throat and it kills me.
“Shh… it’s okay, love. I’m right here. I’ve got you.” I kiss her temple, keeping my lips there. “I’ve got you,” I say again as she takes in shuddery breaths, trying like hell to bury herself in my skin. I wish there was a way to bring her closer to me. Make her feel whole again. Because right now, I can feel my wife’s life falling apart and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.
---
I don’t know how she does it, but she hides her pain from the kids. She even manages to semi-hide it from me. But I know better. I know that she’s hurting and I know that she needs me, but she won’t ask for me. “Are you packed?” I ask her when I come into the room before bed a few days after the news.
She nods, “I just need to finish getting the kids’ stuff ready.”
I shake my head, “Already done. We’ll drop them off at Mom’s tomorrow morning.”
“We’ve never left them before. Not both of us at the same time. Is this a good idea? Should we just take them?”
I cross the floor and rub my hands up and down the sides of her arms. “Hey, baby. Look at me.”
She does and if it’s possible to break from a look I think I did. “You have enough on your plate without having to factor in two screaming kids on a four hour drive, okay? It’s only a couple days. They’ll be fine with Mom and Dad. Dylan said he’d take them somewhere one day to give them a break. I’m not worried.”
“I’m a mom, it’s my job to worry about them.”
“And as your husband it’s my job to worry about you. You need these couple of days, baby.”
She sniffles and looks up at the ceiling. “I don’t know if I’d be able to do this without you.”
“Well luckily you don’t have to.” I press a gentle kiss to her knuckles and sigh. “You want me to run you a bath?”
She shakes her head, “No. I’m gonna go tuck Piper in.”
“Hey,” I squeeze her hand, making her look at me. “You know I love you, right?”
She sighs and pulls me to her, kissing me once, softly. “I love you, too.”
It’s surprisingly easy to get the kids out of the house in the morning. They’re terribly excited to be spending a few days with their grandparents.
“You’ve got your work cut out for you, I think,” I tell my mom when they rush past me into the house.
“Reid, Piper, no running in the house,” y/n says, rubbing her forehead.
“Grandpa!” I heard them scream.
“I’m sorry to drop them on you like this, Mom.”
“Connor, don’t apologize. We want to take them. Here, give me that. Come inside. You have a few minutes before you have to get on the road, right?”
I look over at y/n and she nods. “It’s okay, bub.” I give her a tight lipped smile and place my hand on the small of her back, ushering her inside.
“How are you doing, honey?” my mom asks her after setting the kids bags in the living room.
“I’m doing okay. Thank you, Elaine, for taking them for a few days. I know you guys are busy. I just - I really appreciate it.”
Mom shakes her head, “Don’t even think about it for a second. We love having them here. And they’re in good hands.”
Dad comes into the room, a kid on each hip. “There are my kids, I knew they were being too quiet,” I mumble into y/n’s shoulder. “Hey, Dad.” I reach out, taking Piper off his hip. “How are you doing this morning?”
“Well I just finished my coffee, and now I’m spending time with my grandkids. I’m having a fantastic day.”
He catches sight of my wife who’s talking softly with Mom about the kid’s schedule. “How’s she doing?” He asks me.
I sigh, smoothing out my daughter’s hair. “She’ll be okay. I’m taking care of her.”
“Does she need anything? Do you need anything?”
“No, thank you, Dad, really. Taking Reid and Piper is more than enough.”
"You'll let us know if we can do anything else?"
I nod, "Yeah," I hand my daughter back to my dad and he happily hoists her on his hip. "We should get going. Long drive."
Dad nods, "be safe, okay? Let me or your mother know when you get there."
"We will. Thank you again. Really. You have no idea how much-"
He shakes his head, "stop. We're your parents. It's what we do."
"Alright," I look over at y/n and my mom who are hugging. It hurts my heart just a little as I walk over to them. I place a reassuring hand on the small of my wife's back and she pulls away. And just as I suspect, her eyes are red rimmed. I lean in and kiss her forehead. "You ready?" I ask, my lips never leaving her skin as I brush at the few tears that fell.
She nods.
"Let's go," I remove myself from her to wrap my mom in a hug. "We'll be back in a couple days. If you need anything, call me. I'll have my phone on me at all times."
"They're going to be fine, Connor. You just focus on taking care of your wife, okay?"
"Thanks, mom.” I clear my throat and turn my attention our kids that my dad is now setting on the ground. “Come here you little munchkins. Give Momma and Daddy big hugs and kisses.” They run into our arms – Piper to her mother, and Reid to me. Then we switch off. Y/n looks at them and sniffles. “Now listen to me you guys. I don’t want you giving grandma or grandpa any trouble.”
“Or Uncle Dylan and Auntie Lala, okay?” I add. “They’re gonna come and see you guys sometime while we’re gone, and you need to be on your best behavior. Do you understand?” I shift my gaze back and forth from our seven-year-old or our three-year-old.
“Yes, sir.” They both say.
“Okay. Now. One group hug and we’re on the road. Deal?” I wrap one arm around y/n and the other around Piper, pulling them closer to my side while Reid brings them into his sides as well. “Reid, watch your sister, buddy.”
He nods his little head, “Yes sir.”
---
“Y/n, Connor!” Velma gushes when she finds us after the burial and quickly wraps her arms around us. “I’m so glad you’re here.” When she lets go of me, she places both hands on y/n’s face. “How are you holding up, sweetie?” She wipes away the tears that have fallen in place of the ones I’ve wiped away already.
“Been better,” she mutters.
She sighs, “I know it’s hard.” Her hands move and rub up and down y/n’s arms. “Come on, we’re all heading to the diner. Henry’s already there. I told him to save you your table.”
That breaks my heart. And for the first time since we heard the news, my thought was not on my wife. It was on the diner. The place where we fell more in love with other. The place we’ve brought our kids countless times. Y/n’s second home. My second home. What’s going to happen to it now that Gus is gone? I want to ask. But I don’t. Not yet.
The place is packed, but as promised, our table is unoccupied. Well, except for Henry, who is sitting on the table, talking with his kids.
“Miss y/n,” David, Velma and Henry’s oldest says when they notice us here.
She smiles a tight lipped smile before making her way over to them. “Davy, I told you to stop calling me that.” She wraps him in a hug.
“Sorry. It’s just a force of habit.”
“I haven’t babysat for you in thirteen years. You have a kid! How is calling me Miss y/n a force of habit at this point?”
He laughs, “I don’t know. Sorry.”
Y/n pats his chest and reaches behind her for my hand. “Connor, you remember David, right?”
I nod and hold my spare hand for him to shake. “Yeah, it’s good to see you again.”
He nods, “Yeah, you too. Although, I think we all wish it was under different circumstances.”
“Definitely.”
“Honey, I’m gonna go get drinks. Do you want something?” Velma asks her husband.
“I’m okay, dear. Thank you.”
“Hey, Velma, let me help you.” I look down at y/n. “You gonna be okay?”
“Go ahead bub. I’m fine.”
“Okay,” I press a gentle kiss to her cheek and disappear behind the counter with Velma.
“I really am glad you two could make it. I know Gus meant a lot to her. To the both of you, really.” Velma handed me a cup of ice. “How’d she take it?”
I fill the cup with water and set it down on the counter when she hands me another one. “Not great. But It’s not like I was expecting her to.”
“Yeah, it was a shock to everyone.” She filled two more cups and then braced herself on the edge of the counter. “Where are those charming kids of yours?”
“We uh, left them with my parents. I didn’t want y/n to have to worry about them right now.”
“You’re good to her, Connor.”
“I really do try.” I say, sparing a glance her way. She’s sitting down across from Henry and David. “Velma, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure, sugarplum. What’s wrong?”
I glance back at the lady next to me and swallow the harsh lump in my throat. “I don’t know if you know anything about it, or if they’ve even discussed it yet, but –”
“What’s happening with this place?”
I nod. “Yeah.”
She shrugs, “Gus left it to his son Charlie. But Charlie’s talking about selling it.”
“What?” my eyes widen. “He can’t do that, can he? He can’t just sell it like it’s nothing.”
“I know. But he doesn’t want it. And he’s their only child. He can do whatever he wants with it.”
“Has anyone made a bid or –”
“Oh, honey. Look at you all stressed. Hey, trust me. Everything is going to be fine. If he sells it, then he sells it.”
I know she’s right. I know it’s not my business and I shouldn’t worry myself with it. But I’m looking at my wife right now, in the place she grew up. The place where she had her first job. The place where she celebrated her birthday. The place she fell in love with when she was no older than our son, and the thought of her losing that makes me sick.
“Will you excuse me? I um, have to make a call.”
“Sure, honey. Go ahead.” I slip out of the diner, past the wall photos that hold so many memories of not only my girl, but of us. Of our friends. Of our kids.
“Hello?”
“Shawn, hey. I have a question to ask and it’s a lot. But it’s for y/n.”
He inhales deeply. “Hey, you know I’d do anything for her. Is she okay?”
“Do you think you’d be willing to put in a bid for the Back When Diner?”
---
“Hey, sorry, love. I had to call and check on the kids.” I say, slipping into the spot next to her.
“Are they okay?”
“Yeah, everything’s good. You feeling okay?” I place my hand over hers and give it a reassuring squeeze
“I’m okay.”
“Have you seen your parents yet? Are they here?”
“Um, Mom texted a while ago, said they were on their way. Apparently they forgot something at the house.”
“Can I get you anything?”
“No. Thank you though.”
When we’re back at the hotel, y/n just stands at the foot of the bed, staring at the sheets and her pajamas that I took out of the bag for her. It’s just one of my shirts and a soft pair of shorts, but she doesn’t move to put it on.
I loosen my tie and undo the cuffs of my sleeves, making my way over to her. I wrap my arms around her waist and she melts into my touch like I hoped she would. But she’s still stressed out a little, I can see it in how her shoulders are still tense, higher up than usual. “Can I run you a bath?” I murmur into her still clothed shoulder.
She tilts her head to the side, giving me the space to kiss her neck softly once, twice, three times. “Will you get in with me?”
“If you want me to, then of course I will.”
She turns in my arms and wraps hers around my neck. Then she’s up on her toes and pressing a kiss to my lips. “Have I thanked you today?”
“Thanked me for what?”
“Everything,” she says with a shake of her head. “For arranging everything with Reid and Piper. For driving us here. Getting the room. For just… staying by me today. For being my rock. For being you.” She sniffles. “I really don’t think I could get through this without you, Connor David. And I know I’ve already told you that. But I mean it.” Her fingers tangle in my still styled hair as she presses her forehead against mine. “You’ve been so good to me and I don’t know what I did to deserve this.”
I shake my head, “Don’t say that.” I pull back but take her hand and gently kiss her knuckles. “I’m gonna go start the bath, okay? Meet me in there in two minutes.”
“Okay.”
When she’s made her way back to me, I stand behind her in the mirror and just watch our reflections. “Can I help you out of this?”
“Please,” she mumbles, allowing me to reach for the zipper on the side of her dress. She slides out and I press soothing kisses to her exposed skin. I continue to do so even in the bath, which her back against my chest. Our fingers are tangled together over her stomach with my phone playing soft music beside us. We don’t talk – not because we don’t want to, but because we don’t need to. She’s content in the safety of my arms and I’m content feeling her tension leave her body ever so subtly as she slowly drifts to sleep.
I let her sleep until the water becomes cold and no longer comfortable to be in. So, I lean forward a little, careful not to wake her just yet and unplug the drain.
“Hey, sleepy head. Wake up for me. Let’s get you in your pajamas and we go to bed.”
She groans sleepily, but nods anyway. “You first,” she mumbles.
I let out a breathy laugh and kiss the top of her head. “Okay, lean forward for me then.”
She does and I slip out of the tub. I quickly wrap one of the towels around my waist and grab a second one for her. “Come on, baby.” I hold the towel open for her and she slowly slips out of the tub and I wrap her in the cloth, patting her dry just a little.
“So sleepy,” y/n says and rests her head on my bare chest.
“I know you are, honey. Just one more thing and then you can go back to sleep, okay? Let’s put your clothes on.”
“Will you help me?”
“Of course I will.”
Once we’re both dressed and in bed, she curls into my side, resting a hand on my lower abdomen and her head on my chest. “I love you, bub.”
“I love you, too, y/n/n.”
---
THREE MONTHS LATER “You’re serious? You have it.”
“No, Connor. You have it. It’s yours.” It’s y/n’s.
I run a had over my face and let out a deep sigh. “Thank you,” my voice cracks. “You have no idea what this means to me, Shawn. What it’ll mean to her.”
“Don’t even worry about it, buddy. Just… go tell your girl the good news.”
I sniffle, trying to bite back the tears that are threatening to fall. “Thank you,” I say again.
I know he’s smiling, it’s the most Shawn thing he can do right now. “I’ll talk to you later, Brash. Tell her I said hi.” He says and hangs up.
I take in a deep breath, trying to compose myself before going back in the house where my wife is getting the kids’ bags ready for their day out with Uncle Dylan and Auntie Lala.
“Hey, there you are. Where’s you go?” She looks up at me and furrows her brows, “Are you crying? Baby, what’s wrong?” She crosses the room and places her hands on either side of my face.
“Nothing, love.” I shake my head, taking both of her hands in mine before kissing over her knuckles. “They’re happy tears.”
“Well… what happened?”
I bite the inside of my cheek. “Okay… so, when we were at the diner after Gus’s funeral. I went with Velma to get drinks, remember that?”
“I do.”
“Well, I asked her what was happening with the diner.”
She nods, “Yeah. She told me that Charlie was selling it,” she responded with a sad smile.
“She told me that too. So, right after she said that I made a call.” I swallow hard. “It’s ours, baby. Okay, well… I guess it’s technically Shawn’s. He bought it. He bought it for us.”
“What?”
“Back When… it’s ours.”
“Connor, I don’t understand. Shawn bought it?”
“I called him because I knew how much this place means to you, to us, and the kids. And I couldn’t just let it be sold to someone that wasn’t going to keep it the way it was. I couldn’t do that. You’d just lost Gus, I couldn’t let you lose your second home, too. I would have bought it myself, but I didn’t –”
She cuts me off with a harsh kiss, pressing her body closer to mine. “Thank you,” she mumbles against my lips. “Thank you.”
I sigh against her mouth and pull her impossibly closer. “You grew up with the place. I want Reid and Piper to have the opportunity to grow up there too.”
“God, you’re perfect.” She runs her fingers over my freckles, “But, baby, we don’t have even the slightest clue of how to run a business.”
I laugh, “We’ll figure it out. I’m not worried.”
“Con… why’d you do it? I know – you didn’t want me to lose my home, but, why?”
I know why. I know exactly why I did it, but I can’t tell her yet. “When Dylan comes for the kids, let’s go out there. I want to show you something.”
“Baby, that’s four hours.”
“I know it is. But they’re coming early. We can hit the road the second they’re gone. I’ll show you exactly why I had to keep the place for you, and then we can come back and figure out our next move. Because there will have to be a next move, right?”
She nods with a soft chuckle. “Yeah, there will.”
---
The diner is scarcely populated, of course leaving our booth unoccupied. I don’t know how we get lucky every time, but we do and I’m grateful, because now I can do this exactly the way I planned.
I scoot into the booth first and when she goes to sit in front of me, I take her hand and pull her down next to me.
“So, what did you want to show me?”
“Eleven years ago, we were sitting in this spot, with Brian and Shawn in front of us. And you were telling us all these stories of this place. The memories you have here. I asked you what your favorite thing about this place was.” I place our joined hands on the table and caress her skin. “You told me that when you were little, you would go and sit on that middle stool in front of the fountain area and you would get a milkshake that was bigger than your head. You said that you’d told Vela that when you grew up, you were going to have a fountain area in your home. You wanted the whole thing.”
She blushes and looks down, “Yeah. I was a little crazy.”
“No, you weren’t. And do you remember that I told you that day that I was going to make it happen? That you were going to have your fountain area with the stools and drinks and ice cream machine. I could have made it happen at home. I could have. But I didn’t. I didn’t because something always told me to wait. That it wasn’t the time yet.” I sigh, “And now I know why.”
“What?”
“I wasn’t supposed to build you one because even though I know you’d love and appreciate it, it wasn’t gonna be right. The only way for it to be right, would be if it was this fountain area. This ice cream machine. Those stools. That counter. Sure, we could have had one at the house,” I nod. “But this?” I gesture to the building. “This is home. And it only makes sense that your fountain area is at home, not in a house.”
“So you’re telling me, you had Shawn buy this place for us because I wanted that fountain area?” She asks, dumbfounded.
I can’t help but laugh, “I know it sounds crazy, and it is. But – this is home. For you and for me too. I didn’t grow up here like you did, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t grow here with you. Look at all we’ve seen from this exact booth in these past eleven years. This is the place where I vowed to the guys and myself that I was gonna marry you. This is where we came a week before finding out that we were having a boy. This is where we came a month before we had Piper.” I shrug, “This is home for us. And I want… I want the kids to have the same experience you had with this place. I want them to fall in love with it the way you did, and the way I did years later.”
“Connor, what are you saying?”
“Let’s move here. Let’s run this place and raise our kids here. Let’s watch them grow up here, and fall in love in this exact booth. Let’s jump.”
I watch her for a moment and I swear I can hear the gears turning in her head. “You really want to do this?”
“Yes. I really want to do this.”
Y/n takes my face in her free hand and kisses me over and over again. “Okay.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” she nods.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”

So here we are. The Day of the Doctor, the big 50th anniversary episode. Featuring not one, not two, but three Doctors, all at once! Okay, that already happened in The Three Doctors. And The Five Doctors. Plus there was also The Two Doctors. So perhaps it’s not a unique selling point. But it’s the first time it’s happened in the revival!
The Day of the Doctor primarily revolves around the previously not actually existing War Doctor, who as the name suggests, fought in the Time War. By the time we meet him, he’s been broken down by the off-screen horrors of the war, and has been driven to use The Moment, the ultimate Time Lord weapon/plot device, which will destroy both sides. At this point, all he wants is a big red button to end it all, because everything sucks. John Hurt made a strong performance, of a Doctor who is weary, and heading to the point of absolute dispair. The War Doctor doesn’t intend to survive the activation of The Moment, and you can tell.
The Moment is also a character, for some reason, and that reason is bring back Billie Piper but not as Rose. The Moment seems very much alike with the TARDIS’s portrayal in The Doctor’s Wife, all mixed up with the past and present and such. The Moment apparently wants the Doctor to dither less and make the big decision, so they mess with time so that War Doctor can meet his future selves. It goes... well enough.
Like any good multi-Doctor episode, The Day of the Doctor features lots of cross-Doctor complaining. Eleven is annoyed at Ten for screwing with history and kissing Zygons, while Ten is annoyed that Eleven is the cooler Doctor. Then the War Doctor finds both of them annoyingly unserious, while Ten and Eleven don’t like him because he killed everyone. Everyone is very unhappy, especially when they find out Eleven is unable to remember morbid genocide statistics due to having other things to worry about. Eventually, however, the three Doctors manage to team up to destroy a door, remembering that they’re basically the same person, just in different forms. This allows them to eventually save Gallifrey with The Power of Teamwork. And it helps them beat the Zygons.
Oh yeah, this episode has Zygons. They basically end up being a B-plot, since it’s mostly Clara and the UNITs that have to deal with them. Sure, Ten gets attacked by a horse, but it’s not a big deal. Really, the Zygons are here so that the showdown in the Black Archive can happen, where Kate can threaten to blow up a city to stop the Zygons, in a direct parallel to what the Doctor did to end the Time War. The resolution to the B-plot is to make everyone forget who they are, in order to make the “perfect treaty“ that will later be revealed as imperfect. Forgetting is achieved via the Black Archive’s plot-based security system, which makes you forget it whenever you leave. Which honestly doesn’t seem like the best of security systems, but I digress.
The Zygon plot leads into the actual main point of the episode again once Ten and Eleven decide to join the War Doctor in pushing the “kill everyone“ button. It’s a nice moment of self-solidarity, affirming that the War Doctor is the Doctor, even if he had to blow everyone up. Then Clara asks “but what if you didn’t blow everyone up“ and for some reason the Doctors are like “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that before“. It’s a very sudden turn around from the start of the episode, which low-key implies that the reason the War Doctor is going to use The Moment is because there are no third options left. It’s kill everyone, or everyone gets killed. But it turns out that the secret purpose of The Day of the Doctor is to have All The Doctors show up to save Gallifrey, include Twelve. It’s a nice scene, but I have to admit that it doesn’t quite fit with the rest of the Time War stuff.
Speaking of the Time War, this is finally the episode where it’s actually shown. It’s very disappointing. The Russell T. Davies run, when it mentioned the Time War, implied that it was weird, in a very bad way. Ten literally describes it as Hell in The End of Time, and Rassilon was willing to destroy all of creation to escape it. The Day of the Doctor, however, seems to focus entirely on the “War“ part, with none on the “Time“ part. It’s a bit odd that the end of the ultimate war for the ultimate fate of creation involves the Daleks performing a conventional invasion of Gallifrey. I guess Gallifrey needed to be a savable state, and that’s only possible if it’s reality isn’t collapsing into pieces due abuse of time travel.
The not-so-secret purpose of The Day of the Doctor is for the Time Lords to Be Back. Some people were Very Upset by this, but it’s the nature of a long-enough running franchise that nothing can be permanent. Russell T. Davies made a massive change by destroying the Time Lords, and so Steven Moffat can change the change. Pandora’s Box has been opened, and somewhere inside it is The Timeless Children, waiting to escape, along with the episode that will inevitably retcon it. As far as I’m concerned, if the Daleks keep getting to Be Back, the Time Lords might as well get a go of it as well. Also it feels like all the angst of the Doctor being the Last Time Lord has been completely used up at this point. Maybe there could have been a better way to bring back the Time Lords, but them Being Back was almostly certainly inevitable.
The episode ends on an upbeat note, with Eleven joining a collection of very two-dimensional Doctors, and proclaiming he’s going to find Gallifrey. As endings go, I guess it’s alright. Oh yeah, and he meets The Curator, played by Tom Baker, who may or may not be a far-futre Doctor who has retired from saving the universe to manage paintings. It’s a bit of a letdown that this was the only Classic Doctor representation in the episode, really.
Overall, The Day the Doctor is good, although it could have been bad. I don’t think it’s a super top-tier episode, but it gets where it wants to go well enough, there’s some fun with having multiple Doctors running around.

Christmas at River’s End Mall
Summary -  A Christmas AU in which everyone navigates their seasonal jobs, relationships and Christmas spirit, or lack there of, through woven together tales inspired by holiday prompts.
Chapter 7- Pictures with Santa
Summary -    Piper goes with Davis and his son to meet Santa before her interview. When she steps away to grab a coffee she ends up meeting someone new.
Prompt - Picture with Santa Relationship - Piper & Davis (Minor Piper/Kora) POV - Piper
Piper flinched as another child, standing way to close, shrieked with joy.
“This is taking too long.”
“I thought you wanted to see your godson meet Santa for the first time.”
“I never said that, I just felt bad that his mother had to work, so I thought his godmother should fill in,” Piper jumped back as several children ran between them. “If I knew it was going to be like this I would have reconsidered.”
Davis bounced his son, James, in his arms. “Don’t you listen to her, she’s just pretending to be grumpy, yes she is, she wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
“Don’t talk like that, you sound like an idiot.” Piper's brow wrinkles in distaste. She hates baby talk. “I should have at least come with coffee.” She wonders if she would have time before her interview to grab a cup. She glances at her watch. It was already cutting it way too close. “I’m going to be late.”
Davis looks down at her amused. “Does it matter, how are you going to get a job as head of mall security if you can’t even handle being around a bunch of kids.”
“I don’t think I’ll be carting off kids to mall jail,” Piper snarks back, “When I talked to May about the job, she said I’m supposed to help cut down on theft and brawling on mall grounds.”
“Clearly she doesn’t have any kids.” A dark-haired mother in front of them spoke up with a knowing smile.
The father nods as well, “no kidding, you want to know how to get away with stealing just about anything?" he asks the pair and Piper wants to say no but chances were they were going to be stuck behind this guy a bit longer and being rude was not really an option. “Have a baby do it, when this one was a tot he used take things off the shelf right at check out, no one even noticed.”
“Yeah and you were the only one who made a big deal of it, marching a two year old back into a shop to give it back.”
“Carla I was teaching him a life lesson.”
The man’s wife rolls her eyes and ushers her family forward.
Piper shifts back and forth impatiently. As soon as an elf walks past, Piper quickly flags her down. “Excuse me, do you know how much longer it will be before we get up there?”
She glances up at Santa’s podium. “Maybe ten minutes, Santa’s being chatty today.”
Piper tries unsuccessfully to hold in her frustration. “Go get a coffee would you, you’re bringing down the Christmas spirit.” Piper shoots him a look before stepping out of line and wading through a sea of kids. “Bring back a snack for James, no chocolate or he’ll be a mess before the picture.” She waves in acknowledgement because her first option for responding would have been frowned upon in present company.
She takes the stairs up three flights and looks back down over the balcony to see if Davis had moved ahead much farther in line. To her relief only one more family had finished up. She wouldn’t admit it out loud but she didn’t actually want to miss James meeting Santa for the first time.
She hurries over to Mockingbird’s where Bobbi and a new girl are hovering over what looks like a well worn instruction manual.
“Hey Piper, what can we get for you?” Bobbi asks, while the new girl, Kora according to her name tag waits eagerly next to her.
Piper rattles off her usual order.
“I’ll get it!” Kora offers.
“She’s new?”
Bobbi watches the younger girl affectionately. “Yeah, she's very enthusiastic and a little clumsy,” Bobbi explains, “but she can make those cute coffee art designs on the drinks, like you see in commercials, which has been great for social media promotion.”
“What about coffee, can she make coffee?” because really, what was the point of bringing in customers if your coffee sucked.
“Actually yes, she’s really getting the hang of the espresso machine, which is fantastic because I myself, am about five minutes from pushing it out the window.”
Piper raises an eyebrow at her words. “Isn’t the Christmas tree lot like right below us?”
The barista brushes it off. “He moves fast.” And with that Bobbi gestures for the next group in line to step forward and Piper slides down along the counter, taking in the selection of snacks before grabbing a couple of boxes of animal cookies. They looked the least messy.
“Can I get these as well?” She asks Kora. She glances over her shoulder in surprise.
“Oh yes!” She moves to the register in a flash, quickly adjusting her total before returning to her beverage preparation. She adds a bit of cream and gives it a quick stir. Then picks up a cup cozy and scribbles something on in before she drops the beverage in and passes it over.
Piper glances at the cozy. Bobbi had ordered kitschy ones for the shop and this one has a one to ten “Hotness” scale on the side beneath where they wrote the customer’s name. Kora had written in an eleven and underlined it.
She doesn’t think much of it.
Piper picks up one of the lids from the dispenser and prepares to place it over the to go cup when she sees the design of a little heart on the top of her beverage and stops. Had she meant to do that? Maybe it was just a gimmicky thing Bobbi asked her to do.
“Is it okay?” Kora asks nervously.
“No, no its fine, but um,” Piper falters. Why wouldn’t it be okay? Had she done something she wasn't supposed too? “Do you make these for everyone?”
“No of course not,” she answers, puzzled by the suggestion.
Oh.
Okay.
She glances back at the little heart that is starting to swirl away into an indistinguishable blob. It was a little cutesy for her taste but… she looks back at Kora who is fidgeting uncomfortably.
“Thanks.” Piper places the lid on the cup with a smile on her face. “I’ll see you around?”
“As long as Bobbi doesn’t fire me.”
“Well hey, fingers crossed.”
***
Piper gets back just in time. The family ahead of them had just stepped up to meet Santa and she still has fifteen minutes before she was supposed to be at her interview.
“Here, one animal crackers for the whiney baby and here is one for James.” Piper teases as she hands the first box to Davis and then holds the second in front of baby James who reaches excitedly for them.
“You’re in a better mood.”
Piper shrugs and takes a sip of her coffee. “I guess.”
“Okay you guys are up.” The elf from before waves them forward. They step up to Santa’s chair. She man in the suit makes a believable Santa, with his pale blue eyes and kind smile. Unfortunately for them, James does not think so and when handed over to the Santa he immediately bursts into tears.
“He takes after you!” Davis doesn’t find her jest funny. He steps forwards to try and cheer up his son.
“No worries I’m great with kids.” Santa exclaims in a jolly voice. “What’s your name buddy?” He bounces the little boy on his knee and James momentarily stops to look at him. Suddenly, he reaches forwards, yanks on Santa’s fake beard and then screams even louder than before.
“Come on James, please don’t cry.” Davis pleads and attempts to apologize to Santa while she and the elf both try not to laugh.
“Alright you both suck at this, give him here.” Piper hands her coffee to Davis, scoops up James and looks him dead in the eye. “Look kid, you and I both know this is a little ridiculous, I mean you’re not even going to remember this except for maybe as your first childhood trauma but it means a lot to your doofy dad so let’s give him one little smile and get the heck up out of here.”
James stares back at her curiously and no longer crying. His large brown eyes blink at her several times from his tear-stained cheeks before a little giggle escapes him and she can’t help but grin back. “See you just have to talk to him like a person, not with that ridiculous baby talk, right kid?”
She passes James back to Santa who takes on a very professional tone as well, asking him what he wants for Christmas while the photographer snaps a photo.
“Not bad Piper, I’m truly impressed.”
“Thank you, I guess I’m just having a good day.”
“Oh yeah, why to you say that?”
Before she can respond the photographer asks Davis if he wants to be in the picture as well. In a couple long strides he’s at Santa’s side and looking back at the camera. The photographer snaps a couple of pictures and Piper peeks at the computer where the images immediately pop up on screen.
“Geez Davis, try smiling, you look like a damn robot.”

So I wrote a thing and it’s....fitzsimmons. Which is obviously not my normal thing but the aftermath of tonight’s ep was begging to be written, and so....*shrug*
Warning: serious angst ahead. Also SP0ILERS for 4x20: Farewell, Cruel World!
The day is saved.
Aida and Ivanov are dead, the team (save Mace) is alive—even Mack changed his mind and fled the Framework at the last minute—and Fitz has been returned to his right mind. Talbot has taken control of the cleanup, leaving the rest of them to lick their wounds. The moment of reunion is at hand.
The day is saved. Fitz remembers her.
Surely, then, Jemma should be running to him. She should throw her arms around him, hug him close, tell him she loves him and that he must never leave her again. There should be joyful weeping and apologies on both sides.
But there aren’t.
Fitz stands frozen in the doorway, silhouetted by the light in the hall. Jemma is on the ground, arrested in the process of rebandaging her thigh.
Neither one of them makes a move towards the other. The silence draws out.
“You—” Fitz starts, only to immediately stop. She can’t quite make him out, not with such harsh backlighting, but she knows him well enough to visualize the way his throat must be working silently, the furrow to his brow as he searches for words. “You’re hurt? But the gunshot, it shouldn’t have—”
“Oh!” Her voice is too loud in the quiet of the closet; Fitz jumps. “No, no, this is—I was, um. Stabbed. Before going into the Framework.”
She winces even as she speaks. Besides too loud, her voice is also far too bright for such a stammering mess of a sentence. It’s certain to arouse Fitz’s suspicions.
Sure enough…
“By whom?” he asks at once.
Oh, dear. How can she answer that? She can’t lie—or, she can, actually (she’s much better at it these days), but it won’t last. Too many people—Daisy, Piper, Davis, Prince, Elena—know the truth. It’s certain to come out.
And part of her—an awful, horrible, unspeakable part of her—wants it to. She doesn’t know why. It will only hurt him to know, but still, the words are in her throat, waiting to be shared. Waiting to wound him as surely as his LMD double’s knife wounded her.
In the end, all she says is, “An LMD.”
It’s true. But it’s a kind truth.
For a long moment, Fitz is quiet. At a loss for words herself, Jemma returns to bandaging her thigh. It could be worse—certainly spending ten days lying on a table instead of walking on this wound did her some good—but it also could be better. Her abrupt awakening, to say nothing of their scrambling as they fought to survive the myriad threats they’ve faced since, caused some new damage.
“It was me, wasn’t it,” Fitz says. It isn’t a question.
“No,” Jemma says firmly. “It was an LMD.”
“An LMD with my brain, my personality, my—”
“It wasn’t you!” she snaps over him. “You didn’t stab me.”
(Or tie her up or hit her with a bucket or kiss her forehead or talk about marriage or strangle her—)
“But I shot you,” he whispers, and it feels as though all the air gets sucked out of the room at once. “I made you get on your knees and—and held a gun to your head and said—”
“It wasn’t your fault,” she interrupts. Has to interrupt, because if he says it again… “Ai—you were brainwashed. Programmed.” She swallows down the lump in her throat, fighting against tears. “And I killed your father.”
“He wasn’t real,” Fitz says, but his voice is weak.
He’s still in the doorway. Jemma is still on the floor.
They should be hugging, shouldn’t they? Isn’t that precisely what she dreamed of in the Framework? Ten horrible days of misery and despair, and she pushed through on spite and hope, waiting for the moment she could hold him again, could know that he was alive and hers and Fitz, not the monster Aida made of Leopold.
But she can’t move.
Perhaps it’s because she’s on the floor—though not on her knees—and in pain. It’s too reminiscent of the Framework. It was so horribly lifelike. The warm barrel of his gun against her scalp, the fury and the disdain in his voice, the burning pain where he’d shot her…
And the surety, the complete certainty, that she was about to die, and that his voice speaking hateful words would be the last thing she ever heard.
Fitz hasn’t moved either. Maybe he’s remembering the same thing she is—or maybe he’s remembering his Framework father’s last words, words of love and affirmation. Fake words from a fake man, but more than he ever got from the real thing.
The silence draws on. It’s cold in the closet, the kind of cold that reaches right to her bones.
“I’m sorry,” she says.
Fitz swallows audibly. “Me too.”
Jemma breathes in deeply, steeling herself. There’s only one path forward, and it falls to her to push them down it. Of course it does.
He never has been any good at letting go of her, no matter how insurmountable the odds.
“I think,” she says—and then stops, fighting for composure. Her tears have spilled over, and only once she swipes at her cheeks does she remember that she’s still wearing gloves stained with her own blood. She strips them off at once, ripping one in her haste. “I think we need time.”
“Yeah,” Fitz says. “Yeah, th—that’s probably for the best.”
The stutter tears at her heart.
“Yes,” she says, softly. “It’s for the best.”
Fitz nods. He taps his fist against the doorframe by way of goodbye, and then he’s gone.
And Jemma is alone in a storage closet with her medkit and her tears and his voice in her head, a strange overlap of You mean nothing to me and So we can get married, grow old together.

2017 Oscar Predictions
Keep in mind, this is what I think WILL win, not necessarily what SHOULD win  (for example, Moonlight should win Best Picture, but it probably won’t).
Best Picture: La La Land
I loved La La Land, but I recognize its problems and don’t think it’s a particularly (historically) important film. Moonlight is almost the opposite of La La Land. It’s subtle, dark (both cinematically and thematically at points), and portrays a story we don’t often seen. La La Land is the least polarizing choice, however. It’s also more of an escapist film. In today’s climate, people are probably looking to escape into their entertainment. This being said, Moonlight balances pain and joy with such grace. It’s a film about finding acceptance and peace. It’s beautiful. You get invested without being manipulated. I actually felt more hopeful at the end of Moonlight than I did La La Land. We need more films like Moonlight. Even though La La Land will probably win, Moonlight is a work of art.
Lead Actor: Denzel Washington (Fences)
After Washington won the SAG award (and like...a billion other awards) for his role in Fences, it was pretty clear the Oscar is going to him. Casey Affleck but the his initial buzz died down pretty quickly. Good.
Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
It’s just kind of a given.
Lead Actress: Emma Stone (La La Land)
Also a given. The only possible upset is Isabelle Huppert and while Huppert won at the Golden Globes, that’s not gonna happen here.
Supporting Actress: Viola Davis (Fences)
Duh.
Animated Feature: Zootopia
Not only is it Disney, but it’s “woke” Disney. The Academy can once again suck Disney’s dick, but this time they don’t have to feel bad about it because Zootopia is socially conscious. But tbh it’s just winning for that tiger that will do you right.
Cinematography: La La Land
Honestly I’d be happy with any of the nominees winning in this category. All the films are beautiful and deserve cinematic praise. But La La Land is La La Land. Voters are gonna go with that dancing among the stars scene.
Costume Design: Jackie
It’s a period piece. Specifically a 60s piece. Also people are obsessed with Jackie O.
Directing: Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
I don’t really have a reason, it’s just probably gonna happen. He’ll be the youngest person to win this. He did a great job directing La La Land. He’s clearly a great director (I mean, Whiplash). I just think Barry Jenkins is more subtle and I appreciate that.
Documentary Feature: OJ: Made in America
Unfortunately the buzz around this massive film will beat out 13th and I Am Not Your Negro.
Documentary Short: The White Helmets
I would usually choose “Joe’s Violin” to win this category. It actually would not be the first time a short about a Holocaust survivor and their relationship with music won. However, “The White Helmets” is about first responders in Aleppo. In our political climate, particularly surrounding refugee debates, I think “The White Helmets” will come out on top.
Film Editing: La La Land
Tom Cross won it for Whiplash and he’ll probably do it again for La La Land. Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival are more typical choices for this category as well, but they’ll probably split some votes, leaving the musical on top.
Foreign Language Film: The Salesman
A Man Called Ove or Toni Erdamann (both quirky dramedies) are also typical category picks that most likely won’t make the cut in this political climate. After the travel ban and director Asghar Farad’s promised boycott of the awards ceremony, Iran’s The Salesman gained buzz and will probably come out on top in an attempt to send a message to Trump.
Makeup and Hairstyling: Star Trek Beyond
Even if I thought Suicide Squad could win (which it could) I wouldn’t even list it as a prediction. And honestly all that crazy alien makeup in Star Trek is way more deserving of the award than the people who dyed the tips of Margot Robbie’s hair and wrote “damaged” on Jared Leto’s forehead. Lol fuck Suicide Squad.
Original Score: La La Land
I mean...of course. La La Land had its problems, but the score sure as hell wasn’t one of them.
Original Song: “City of Stars” La La Land
This song is beautiful and also way better than the “Audition” song. Some people think that the two La La Land songs will split votes and Moana will come out on top, but honestly I think everyone’s favorite song from La La Land was “City of Stars” (also it’s the reoccurring theme of the movie), so I don’t think it will have any trouble winning.
Production Design: La La Land
I really want Arrival to win this with its eerie and quiet feel, but La La Land ends the movie with that huge high-production montage. Arrival could still win (and I hope so), but La La Land will probably sweep.
Animated Short: Piper
It’s a charming Pixar film, of course it’s gonna win. It’s probably adorable and lovely. It does’t matter how artful or innovative or amazing the other shorts are. If Disney or Pixar has a charming animated short among the nominees...it’s gonna win.
Live Action Short: Ennemis Intérieurs
It’s a timely piece about hardships immigrants (a Muslim immigrant in this case) must face. There are crowd pleasers in this category, but the relevance of “Ennemis Intérieurs” will probably push it to the top.
Sound Editing: Hacksaw Ridge
War film with lots of crazy sound shit going on. I would say La La Land again, but a lot of times the more action driven films top in this category.
Sound Mixing: La La Land
I don’t usually find myself voting for two different films in the sound categories, but in this case Hacksaw Ridge and La La Land are the two types of films that typically top sound categories: war film and musicals.
Visual Effects: The Jungle Book
Like did you see Jungle Book.
Adapted Screenplay: Moonlight
Um, it’s gorgeous. It should win and it will. Lion is its only competition, but the Academy will want to give Moonlight something more than an acting category.
Original Screenplay: Manchester By the Sea
La La Land may technically be more “original” but Manchester By the Sea seems very...original screenplay winner. Also, everyone forgot about this movie with the La La Land vs. Moonlight race, so they’ll probably throw it something in this category. La La Land could still win. Honestly I’d rather see it win over Manchester. ACTUALLY I’d most like to see the absurd script for The Lobster win. That script is miles more original than anything else in the category.
Basically, expect La La Land to pull a Chicago. Great film, but doesn’t necessarily deserve to sweep the way it’s going to.

The Next Doctor (Doctor Who Christmas Special)
Tumblr media
Today Jon is forced to watch and recap “The Next Doctor”, the first in a series of special bridging the fourth and fifth series of Doctor Who. We haven’t had a good ol’ fashioned Christmas special since “Voyage of the Damned”, but can this special live up to the legacy of Kween Kylie?
Keep reading to find out…
Eli, you don’t need to draw a single straw to get pushed to the front of this class! Your recap was a lot of fun, and I love the ever evolving mythos around the unkillable Ma Petrillo. If my immortality pact with old Mephistopheles falls through and you should, heaven forbid, pass away, I would have plenty to say about your recapping skills during my eulogizing!
For now, though, let’s head back to old London Town! Buttocks tight!
Episode directed by Andy Goddard and written by Russell T Davies
London, Christmas Eve, 1851. What a perfect, picturesque local for a Doctor in mourning! No doubt still smarting from the loss of everyone’s favorite Donna, and emerges from the TARDIS looking… oh, never mind all that stuff about mourning. The Doc’s his usual, chipper self as he takes in the holiday merriment surrounding him. The Doctor’s getting the lay of the land from a local urchin when suddenly he hears a woman call his name. Or title. Or whatever the hell ‘Doctor’ actually is for him. He runs to investigate and finds a woman standing before a door. On the other side of that door is something which is apparently none too happy, as from the looks of it it’s about to burst through the door. The Doc assures the woman that he’s here to save the day, but she doesn’t know who he is and keeps calling for the Doctor. He tells her he is the Doctor, but she says there can’t be two of him. Suddenly another man, identified by the woman as the Doctor, runs up and takes command of the situation. This Doctor, who I’ll be referring to as Fopter just because he’s so darn dandy, tells the woman, identified as Rosita, to get back to give him his sonic screwdriver and to return to the TARDIS. Suddenly the door crashes open and out comes… something. It has the powerful, attractive face of one of my beloved Cybermen, but a body that is decidedly non-cyber. Both Doctors point their screwdrivers at the creature as we head to the opening credits. By the way, the Fopter’s screwdriver is literally a screwdriver, like, from an old timey toolkit, so that should give you some idea of what sort of Time Lord he is.
The Fopter tells the Doctor he’s been hunting the cyber-thing for a fortnight now, and the Doctor quickly deduces that this is what you get when Cybermen convert something like a dog or a cat. Rosita provides the Fopter with some rope, and he expertly lassos the beast before it drags him, and the Doctor, up the side of a building. The Doctor tells the Foptor he’s not letting him out of his sight, but he doesn’t know why the Foptor doesn’t recognize him. The beast drags them into a building and towards the opposite window, but luckily Rosita arrives to cut the rope before they’re dragged out to their deaths. Rosita gives the Fopter a good talking to and reminds him they’ve got a funeral to get to. The Doc’s still assuming the Foptor is a future iteration of himself and doesn’t understand why he doesn’t remember his past self. He decides not to reveal his true self and goes with the John Smith line instead. After some questions the Foptor admits that large portions of his memories are missing, and it started when those damnably, confoundingly sensual Cybermen showed up. They fell from the sky in a blaze of light, took something from the Foptor and robbed him of his memories. That’s all he’s really sure of, other than the fact that this John Smith is an odd duck. The Foptor assures the Doctor he’ll keep London Town safe before running off to the funeral he’s late for.
Oh, damn, do you hear that telltale ka-chunk of metallic feet? The spine-tingling whir of those gears? Strap in, y’all, cause our many, many shiny, metal daddies are home. Cyberleader, who just looks great, by the way, love the fresh æsthetic, demands a report, and a nearby Cyberhunk lets him know that a Cybershade, which is apparently what that be-fursuit-ed bastardization from earlier is called, has spotted the Doctor. They play back the Shade’s POV, showing both the Doctor and the Foptor, but Cyberleader extends one powerful, commanding digit to indicate that the Foptor, not the Doctor, is their dangerous enemy. The Cybermen begin going over their plan, but, what’s this? There’s a decidedly non-cybertronic presence in their midst! The Cybermen have apparently made an ally of one Miss Hartigan, who’s promised that (provided she operates at maximum efficiency) she’ll be heralded in the new age at the court of the Cyberking.
*record scratch*
Wait, wait, wait… there’s a Cyberking? A king of all Cybermen? The Cyberest Cyberman to ever Cyber a Cyber?
Someone get me one of Scarlett O’Hara’s fans, I’m catchin’ a case of the vapours!
Anyway, turns out the funeral everyone’s so jazzed about is for Reverend Fairchild, and Rosita, Miss Hartigan and the Foptor will all be in the vicinity. The Foptor throws a nice bit of old-timey sexism Rosita’s way, explaining that, despite the fact that she undeniably saved his life less than ten minutes ago, this isn’t work for a woman. He sends her back to the TARDIS while he plans to break into the late Reverend’s crib. The Doctor, observing all of this, breaks in first and lets the Foptor in. The Foptor explains that he got on the trail of this mystery when a man named Jackson Lake was murdered by the Cybermen. Lake’s body was never found, but after his death more and more murders took place, and then children started getting abducted. The Foptor believes the Reverend was killed by the Cybermen; he was a pretty good guy, and an advocate for local children. The Foptor begins to wonder why he trusts the Doc so easily, and the Doc points out that the Fop is wearing a pocket watch like the one the Doc used all the way back in “Human Nature”. Don’t get your hopes up, though, because sometimes a watch is just a watch, as is the case here. No stored Time Lord consciousness to be found here!
In the Reverend’s stuff, the Doc finds some big, fancy flashdrives called infostamps. One of the infostamps contains the history of London, and the Doc realizes the Cybermen are relying on the infostamps to update themselves due to the lack of power that comes with being trapped in the wrong century. The Foptor says he was holding an infostamp the night he lost his mind and regenerated, and he thinks the Doctor was there. The Doctor says he’ll help him, but now’s not the time or place. He does a quick search and uncovers a Cyberman chilling in a closet like a thicc, hunky coatrack. More and more Cybermen come pouring out of the walls and chase the Doctor and the Foptor upstairs, while the Doc tries to convince them he’s the Doctor. The Foptor figures out how to weaponize an infostamp and slaughters the innocent Cybermen in cold blood.
Back at the funeral, Miss Hartigan makes her appearance in a saucy red getup. She reveals herself to be the Matron of the Saint Joseph workhouse, but none of the fancy old guys around the gravesite have paid much attention to her over the years. She begins to read them the riot act and lets them know that Reverend Fairchild was killed to get them all in one place. Right on cue, the Cybermen emerge from the surrounding woods like hunky Mr. Tumnuses, surrounding the funeral attendees before deleting all but a select few of them.
The Doctor and the Foptor meet up with Rosita and the Foptor lets her know she was right about the Reverend’s death being connected to the Cybermen. The Doctor’s looking forward to seeing the Fop’s TARDIS, but he can’t help notice all of the luggage around them. This is evidence; it’s the property of Jackson Lake, the first man killed by the Cyberdads. The Doc begins going through Lake’s luggage while Rosita explains how she met the Fop, and how he saved her from a run-in with a Cyberman. The Doc finds an infostamp inside Lake’s property, and the Foptor finally takes him to see his TARDIS: Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style. It’s a hot-air balloon. I mean, granted, it’s blue, but it ain’t no TARDIS. It is expensive to keep it inflated, though, but luckily the Foptor is apparently rollin’ in dough. Even though the Fop looks at the TARDIS like a proud parent, he’s never ridden in it and says he can’t leave until London is safe.
Okay, says the Doctor, enough of all this. Before he can explain the Foptor’s backstory, we get a shot of Miss Hartigan playing around with the Cyber-controlled survivors of the Reverend’s funeral. She sends them out to collect children for her like geriatric Pied Pipers of Hamelin while we head back to the Exposition Zone. The Doctor explains that the Cybermen were beaten during the Battle of Canary Wharf, and what was left of them were sucked into the void. But then, because of that whole Reality Bomb ish, the walls between worlds got too thin and the Cybermen were able to sneak through to this time and place. The Cyberhunks found a man called Jackson Lake, and he grabbed an infostamp and used it against the poor refugees just like the Foptor did earlier. Have you figured it out yet? Lake’s body was never found, and the Foptor kept all of his luggage without ever going through it. The Doctor takes another look at the Fop’s watch and finds the initials ‘J.L.’ inscribed on them. So, yeah, the Foptor’s not a Time Lord and he’s certainly not the Doctor. The infostamp he grabbed contained all the information the Cybermen had on the Doc, and when he used the infostamp against the Cybermen all of the Doctor-related information it was carrying got beamed into Lake’s head.
The Doc tries to cheer Lake up. Yeah, the basis for his sense of identity was a lie, but, I mean, he saved Rosita! That was him! And he built the TARDIS, and… I don’t know, the lasso thing earlier was pretty cool, right? There’s a bit more to Lake’s story, though. Jackson Lake wasn’t travelling alone; he was travelling with his wife, Caroline, who was killed. In his grief Lake latched onto the new reality provided to him by the infostamp and the devastated Jackson Lake was suppressed. This is interrupted by a beeping; turns out Lake’s got a whole mess of infostamps in his luggage, and he realizes the Cybermen are sending out a call to arms. They’re on the move, and the Doc runs outside to see a parade of children being marched through the street. Lake sends Rosita out to help the Doctor. There are Cybershades watching the children, and the Doc can’t risk an open fight around so many youngsters. All the kids are gathered together before the Court of the Cyberking and are ordered to march inside.
Rosita and the Doc try to sneak inside the Court, only to be met by Miss Hartigan. She explains to a confused Doctor that she hasn’t been converted; the Cybermen generously offered her liberation, and she took it. The Doc explains who he is and the Cybermen realize they’ve been chasing the wrong guy. Miss Hartigan reveals that the children are going to be used as a workforce, but she’s coy about the actual work they’ll be doing. The Cybermen advance on Rosita and the Doc, but Lake arrives and blasts them with his info-ray. The heroes make a break for it, but not before Rosita gives Miss Hartigan a helluva right hook. Hartigan says she’s done waiting, and that the Cyberking will rise tonight.
Luckily Lake’s got a plan to get into the sewers and make his way to the Court. Miss Hartigan orders the kids to work after she kills the converted Pied Pipers. The kids have almost got the Cyberking powered up, oh happy day! The heroes find a Dimension Vault in the basement of Lake’s house; the Cybermen upcycled it from the Daleks and used it to get out of the void. Cyberleader shows Hartigan the throne of the Cyberking, and then reveals she herself will sit in said throne. She calls bullshit, as she was promised she would never be converted, but Cyberleader, being ever the cunning, tricky type, points out that this was a lie. Hartigan is strapped into the throne and Cyberleader prepares to liberate her from her emotions. Or, at least, that was the idea. She becomes the Cyberking, but things don’t go exactly as planned. She relishes in the scope of the information she’s been given access to, and immediately begins rewriting the code she’s been wired up to. She still has her emotions, and her mind is so strong that she’s able to wield all that sexy, Cyberpower while still retaining her identity. She deletes Cyberleader and takes command of the entire fleet of Cybermen.
Meanwhile, in the less sexually-charged storyline, Rosita, Lake and the Doc make their way to the Court in time for the kids to power up a giant engine. The Cybermen are ready to delete the workforce now that the engine’s charged, but the heroes rush in to free the kids and save the day. Lake realizes his backstory wasn’t sad enough and remembers that he had a son, Frederick, who was kidnapped by the Cybermen. The Doc rescues Fred from a ledge as Hartigan raises up her great machine. Rosita arrives just in time to see… Oh… Oh, my.
A massive, Dreadnought-class granddaddy of a ship with Mercy Hartigan wired into its heart rises out of the Thames. Hartigan orders that the people of Earth surrender to her, and blows up a little bit of London to make her point. The Doctor runs back to commandeer Lake’s TARDIS as Lake, Fred and Rosita meet up in the street. The Doc flies up to look Hartigan in the eye and offer her a deal. He recognizes that she has arguably the greatest mind Earth has known up until now, and she’s strong enough to control the Cybermen’s lusty ways. He thinks she deserves to live, and offers to use the stolen Dalek tech to send her to a world where there aren’t any people to convert and the Cyberrace can live out its existence in peace. Hartigan turns down his offer, and he uses a cluster of infostamps to fry the connection between Hartigan and the Cybermen. She’s forced to face her existence, surrounded by Cybermen and wired into the Cyberthrone. She’s overcome and… sort of, I don’t know, screams all the Cybermen into exploding. It’s kind of weird, and, just to put all my cards on the table, I’m damned sick of seeing my beloved robodads get blown up all the time. The Doc uses the Dalek tech to zap away the Cyberking before it can fall and crush half of London.
Lake rouses a nearby crowd into hooting and hollering for an underappreciated Doctor. Once the TARDIS lands, Lake beings to plan his new life. He’s a widower, but he has his son. And I guess Rosita’s going to be Fred’s nursemaid? Like, that’s her reward for helping to save the world? Anyway, the Doc lets Lake take a step into the real TARDIS, where he’s suitably overwhelmed. The Doc’s ready to make a break for it, but Lake asks why he doesn’t have a companion. The Doctor says they leave, sooner or later, or some forget, and they break his heart. Lake demands the Doc stay long enough for Christmas dinner in honor of the ones they’ve lost, and, for once, the Doc agrees.
The End
~~~~~
This was a lot of fun, but I really, really wish Lake would have kept using the title of Doctor in a Dread Pirate Roberts-esque passing of the torch, with him and Rosita flying around London in the TARDIS and fighting old timey crime. That, to me, would have been a way better ending than Rosita winding up as a nursemaid for what’s-his-name. I thought Miss Hartigan was an amazing villain, and, naturally, I loved seeing my beloved Cyberdads in action again. I have to say that I was pretty sure that Lake wasn’t really the Doc from the jump (specifically at that point before the opening credits when the Doc holds up his sonic screwdriver and Lake holds up a chunk of wood and metal), so that wasn’t a big reveal for me. I thought the broken watch bit was funny, and I loved Rosita as a companion.
Overall I give “The Next Doctor” QQQQ on the Five Q Scale.
Tune in Friday when Eli will be bringing some more of that topical heat in the next episode of The Golden Girls, “Letter to Gorbachev”, and then on Saturday I’ll recap the next Doctor Who special, “Planet of the Dead”.
Until then, thanks for reading, thanks for cheering and thanks for being One of Us!
Imagine the disappointment when you find yourself enjoying one of the most entertaining episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and then struck with the realization that you would have to wait a whole extra week to see what comes next? They have really grabbed our attention between everything Deke, the adventures in space, and the madness of what Sarge and company came to this Earth to do. I mean, there’s some big questions up in the air right now. It was just anyone’s guess if this would end up being an episode primarily focused on space, or what’s happening on Earth. Surely enough some might want both, but for right now we are getting the best quality storytelling by splitting that time between episodes.
Considering the events of last week’s episode, there was a lot of fallout to follow across the board. I wasn’t expecting that this week’s episode would try to cover all bases, but I could overlook it right now since we already had a week without the show airing at all. Let’s start with things on Earth. It was painful period with S.H.I.E.L.D. after the losses they suffered on both ends of their missions. On one hand they lost May to Sarge, and on the other hand they lost Keller to whatever this new parasite is. Even if technically you could call what they did a success, the losses were too hard to ignore. From the minute this episode started you could feel the tension just with Mack and Yo-Yo. They finally had the talk that they were dancing around for so long. Then you had the build-up in suspense from Sarge as everyone is trying to figure out exactly what he must have planned for May. Where she now fits into his mysterious plans is just as big a question as the plan itself. Now as for __, it was anyone’s guess where they would continue to move forward with him. There could have been bigger plans, but for now it worked just having this one guy who seems out of his depth stepping into a world he was not fully prepared for.
MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “The Other Thing” – FRIDAY, JUNE 14 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Mitch Haaseth) MING-NA WEN
Between Sarge’s larger plan and what he had planned for May, I’m glad that this wall of vagueness has begun to drop. Once they got to where they needed to be, it was straightforward in understanding what he is trying to accomplish by hunting all of these people who are supposedly shouldn’t be on Earth. Surely enough you probably could have begun to piece things together yourself, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not the kind of show where you want to assume things until you are one-hundred percent sure. He may not be the villain, but he is certainly someone working in extremes that has to be dealt with. This put a lot into perspective, though some other questions are still raised. I mean we still don’t know the origin of Sarge, who some other new faces are who are yet to appear, or where these parasites came from.
Of course they couldn’t help sciencing an explanation for the parasites, but this time around it was pretty cool. I’m sure everyone will have their theories about the connection between these parasites and the universe as a whole, and that should without a doubt keep everyone on their toes for when all is revealed later on.
Catching up with the rest of the team out in space, things were no better. Now that we’ve gotten our dose of Deke, this was the more exciting storyline to follow. I found it fun, but also crushing because this team is paddling up a creek without a paddle. Every step they take forward, it seems that they are at the same time taking two steps behind. Which sucks when they have finally seen Fitz with their own eyes only to lose him once more. The addition of Enoch into the mix was as well entertaining for the fact that he is not in the best place either. You wouldn’t have expected so much from him, and here we are challenging how far someone like him can be pushed outside of his comfort zone. Honestly, the contrast from everyone else on Earth is just great. This goes double for the interactions between Piper and Davis. Everything about their dialogue and responses to one another is gold.
MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “The Other Thing” – FRIDAY, JUNE 14 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Mitch Haaseth) CLARK GREGG
Now this new situation they all found themselves in was cool. Obviously a bit of a distraction from saving Fitz, but who could argue with the opportunity to finally be introduced to Enoch’s people? The most notable of his people is introduced as Altarah. A welcomed introduction as someone who shares the exact same mannerisms as Enoch, but with a bit more of a darkness to her(it?). With that said, it was good that they did not waste time addressing what this other planet was that needed saving aside from Earth. Up to this week that had me doing flips in my head wondering if there was something I missed. Good to know that this was simply the writers trying to add a little more flavor to this cosmic adventure. It worked because this brought everything together quite nicely for this team without prolonging anything longer than necessary. That’s not to say that their ultimate goal was to bring everyone back home, because nothing is ever that simple. However, the alternative was worth the journey to this point for putting those together who needed to be together.
It was a bit abrupt, but it was worthwhile seeing what those final days were like for May and Coulson. We were going to get around to this one way or another, so they couldn’t have chosen a better time when May has someone who looks like Coulson in her presence.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “The Other Thing” did a lot, and I’m impressed they did it well. They went shuffling the pieces everywhere, but by the end of this episode got everyone where they needed to be, and us to a point where we could better understanding what we are expecting from the rest of this season. There was action, humor, and it was even heartbreaking at some points. You couldn’t have asked for it any other way after the week break we had.
One Year Later: Upfronts Report Card, ABC + CBS Edition
Tumblr media
One year ago, I made a post with all the new series from upfronts and an interest and second season number. Here’s what I watched and didn’t watch and what I liked and didn’t like.
ABC
CONVICTION LOGLINE: Carter Morrison, the brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former president, is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She and her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts work to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person might have been convicted of a crime. CAST: Hayley Atwell, Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey, Emily Kinney, Manny Montana, Donald DiTomasso Interest: 9 2nd Season? 9
This got cancelled, but I did enjoy it a bit while it was on. I still have 9 unwatched episodes that I'll probably check out at some point.
Interest: 6 2nd Season? No Ranking: 19th out of 28
DESIGNATED SURVIVOR LOGLINE: A lower-level U.S. Cabinet member suddenly is appointed president after a catastrophic attack during the State of the Union kills everyone above him in the line of succession. CAST: Kiefer Sutherland, Natascha McElhone, Maggie Q, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, Kal Penn, Tanner Buchanan, LaMonica Garrett Interest: 6 2nd Season?: 7
I stopped watching this very early (4 episodes) due to Trump and being lukewarm on the show anyways. I'm probably not gonna catch up on this, but I'm mildly interested because it has a second season coming.
Interest: 3 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 23rd
NOTORIOUS LOGLINE: Inspired by the true-life stories of famed criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and cable news producer Wendy Walker, the series is a provocative look at the unique, sexy, and dangerous interplay of criminal law and the media. CAST: Piper Pirabo, Daniel Sunjata, Sepideh Moafi , Kate Jennings Grant, Ryan Guzman, Kevin Zegers, J. August Richards, Aimee Teegarden
Interest: 7 2nd Season?: 7
Notorious as the first Shondaland show to fail, this one still caught my eye. I watched every episode fairly quickly, but it was just as quickly cancelled. RIP.
Interest: N/A 2nd Season?: No Rank: 17th
STILL STAR-CROSSED LOGLINE: Based on the book by Melinda Taub and set in 16th century Verona, it picks up where William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet left off, charting the treachery, palace intrigue and ill-fated romances of the Montagues and Capulets in the wake of the young lovers’ tragic fate. CAST: Wade Briggs, Anthony Head, Zuleikha Robinson, Lashana Lynch, Ebonée Noel, Sterling Sulieman, Medalion Rahimi, Grant Bowler, Susan Wooldridge,Torrance Coombs, Dan Hildebrand Interest: 7 2nd Season?: 5
Still hasn't aired. But my interest is probably down to a 2 or 3 now.
TIME AFTER TIME LOGLINE: Based on the novel by Karl Alexander and movie, it delivers a fantastical cat-and-mouse adventure through time when famed science fiction writer H.G. Wells is transported to modern-day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper. Once H.G. arrives in New York City, he finds a world he never thought possible and a young woman who captivates him. CAST: Freddie Stroma, Josh Bowman, Genesis Rodriguez, Regina Taylor Interest: 6 2nd Season?: 1
Turbo-cancelled and I never seriously considered watching it.
Interest: 0 2nd Season? No
DOWNWARD DOG LOGLINE: Story of a struggling millennial, Nan, told from the point of view of her lonely and philosophical dog, Martin. One session at obedience school already makes them realize that even at their worst, they may be the best thing for each other. CAST: Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Mo Collins Interest: 5 2nd Season?: 4
Just started, but my interest has fallen back to "probably not watching".
IMAGINARY MARY LOGLINE: Live-action/CGI project centers on Alice, a fiercely independent career woman whose life is turned upside-down when she meets the love of her life – a divorced father with three kids. This triggers even more upheaval when the slightly unhinged imaginary friend she created as a child suddenly reappears to help her navigate the transition from single girl to a woman ready for a family. CAST: Jenna Elfman, Stephen Schneider, Rachel Dratch (voice-over), Nicholas Coombe, Matreya Scarrwener, Erica Tremblay Interest: 4 2nd Season?: 1
Never watched, also cancelled very fast.
Interest: 0 2nd Season? No
SPEECHLESS LOGLINE: Maya DiMeo is a mom on a mission who will do anything for her husband Jimmy and her kids Ray, Dylan and JJ, her eldest son with special needs. As Maya fights injustices both real and imagined, the family works to make a new home for themselves and searches for just the right person to give JJ his “voice.” CAST: Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler, Kyla Kennedy, Cedric Yarbrough Interest: 1 2nd Season?: 2
I hated Minnie Driver's character for every minute of the pilot and realized she was going to be in the rest of the show, so I stopped watching.
Interest: 0 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 28th out of 28
UNTITLED SARAH DUNN COMEDY (American Housewife) LOGLINE: Katie Otto, a confident, unapologetic, plump wife and mother of three, raises her flawed family in the wealthy town of Westport, CT, filled with “perfect” mommies and their “perfect” offspring. She lets us in on her deepest, most unfiltered thoughts through voice-over as the she lives her life as the second fattest housewife in Westport. CAST: Katy Mixon, Diedrich Bader, Johnny Sequoyah, Daniel DiMaggio, Julia Butters, Carly Hughes, Ali Wong Interest: 5 2nd Season?: 5
Loved it. Can't wait for season two.
Interest: 9 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 10th
CBS
BULL LOGLINE: Inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw as the founder of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time. Brilliant, brash and charming, Dr. Bull is the ultimate puppet master as he combines psychology, human intuition and high-tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses and the accused tick. CAST: Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr, Chris Jackson, Jaime Lee Kirchner, , Annabelle Attanasio Interest: 2 2nd Season: 8
Bull is a procedural throwback that has just enough charm to coast along. It isn't tired yet, and Michael Weatherly is having fun. I'll probably keep lazily watching it. I've seen about half of the first season.
Interest: 6 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 20th
DOUBT LOGLINE: Centers on a smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who shockingly gets involved romantically with one of her clients who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. CAST: Katherine Heigl, Steven Pasquale, Laverne Cox, Dule Hill, Dreama Walker, Elliott Gould, Kobi Libii Interest: 4 2nd Season: 5
If this wasn't the quickest cancellation of the season, it was really close. Shame for all the talented people involved, but this never even barely interested me.
Interest: 0 2nd Season? No
MACGYVER LOGLINE: A reimagining of the 1985-92 series of the same name follows a twentysomething MacGyver as he creates a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening. CAST: Lucas Till, George Eads, Addison Timlin, Joshua Boone, Michelle Krusiec Interest: 8 2nd Season: 4
I gotta admire a show that jettisoned its main authority figure and cast member barely after it was picked up for a full season. For a show like MacGyver, it doesn't really matter though. The cast team works well together, and so far the novelty hasn't worn off. I only have a few episodes left in the season.
Interest: 10 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 16th
PURE GENIUS LOGLINE: Follows a young Silicon Valley tech titan who enlists a veteran surgeon with a controversial past in starting a hospital with a cutting edge, “new school” approach to medicine. CAST: Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, Brenda Song, Reshma Shetty, Ward Horton, Aaron Jennings, Odette Annable Interest: 5 2nd Season: 5
Laughably bad. I quit before it was cancelled, at least. There's a dim chance I might watch the rest, but probably not.
Interest: 3 2nd Season? No Rank: 25th
TRAINING DAY LOGLINE: An idealistic young African-American police officer is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous Caucasian detective. Set 15 years after the feature film left off. CAST: Bill Paxton, Justin Cornwell, Katrina Law, Drew Van Acker, Lex Scott Davis, Julie Benz Interest: 6 2nd Season: 3
RIP Bill Paxton. I thought the pilot was wild as hell, and remain on the fence on watching the rest of the ride.
Interest: 5 2nd Season? No Rank: 24th
THE GREAT INDOORS LOGLINE: An adventure reporter must adapt to the times when he becomes the boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of the magazine. CAST: Joel McHale, Stephen Fry, Chris Williams, Shaun Brown, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Christine Ko, Susannah Fielding Interest: 4 2nd Season: 3
When this got rightly roasted through the upfronts for its lazy "Millennials suck!" humor, I kind of wrote it off. But Joel McHale is really good at sitcom timing, and almost all of his young co-stars could keep up. And this was funny and settled into a fairly enjoyable workplace comedy. BUT it got cancelled right when I was really getting into it, despite pulling a 1.1 in the key demo with a rerun versus the Grey's Anatomy finale. Grr.
Interest: 10 2nd Season? No Rank: 9th
KEVIN CAN WAIT LOGLINE: A newly retired police officer is looking forward to spending carefree, quality time with his wife and three kids, only to discover he faces tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets. CAST: Kevin James, Erinn Hayes, Taylor Spreitler, Mary Charles Jones,James DiGiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Leonard Earl Howze, Lenny Venito, Gary Valentine Interest: 1 2nd Season: 8
Turns out I like Kevin James falling down more than I thought! The side characters were pretty good, and most of the guest stars (sup Adam Sandler) were funny.
Interest: 7 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 14th
MAN WITH A PLAN LOGLINE: A contractor whose wife goes back to work starts spending more time with his kids and discovers the truth every parent eventually realizes: his little angels are maniacs. CAST: Matt LeBlanc, Jessica Chaffin, Matt Cook, Grace Kaufman, Hala Finley, Matthew McCann Interest: 6 2nd Season: 8
I bailed on this pretty early. Matt LeBlanc was charming as always, and they even introduced Kevin Nealon as a somewhat funny brother! But I was watching a lot of shows, and this was far from my favorite sitcom. It leaned too much on the family part, and never really fleshed them out like Kevin, Housewife, and Mick were able to do relatively quickly. It did get a second season, so I'm tempted to catch up and binge the 20-odd episodes remaining in the background.
Interest: 5 2nd Season? Yes Rank: 21st
Turn Left (Doctor Who S04E11)
Tumblr media
Today Jon is forced to watch and recap “Turn Left”, the eleventh episode of Doctor Who’s fourth series. Donna’s taking a stroll down memory lane, but the things she’s remembering aren’t necessarily what actually happened. Can she make sense of things and get back to her proper life before it’s too late?
Keep reading to find out…
Eli, your latest recap was fantastic! I’m glad you had more fun with this flashback episode, and that you’re coming around to younger Dorothy! Although, I think maybe there was some sort of issue with the DVD I gave you? You seem to think that it wasn’t actually Betty White out there shredding the dancefloor, which I can only assume is due to some sort of audiovisual glitch or something like that. Sorry for the confusion, and hopefully you can watch a better copy soon!
For now, though, we’re due for some Donna Time.
Episode directed by Graeme Harper and written by Russell T Davies
On the planet Shan Shen, which seems like an intergalactic Chinatown, the Doctor’s showing Donna around and she’s having a really great time. The Doc lags behind to chat with some locals, and Donna wanders ahead only to be stopped by a fortuneteller. Donna’s not really interested in hearing her future told, though; she’s happy with her life as it is. The fortuneteller says the reading’s free for redheads, so Donna gives it a whirl. Inside the shop, the fortuneteller is fascinated by Donna. Specifically, she wants to know how Donna came to know the fascinating man in her life. Donna explains that she wound up in the Doc’s TARDIS on her wedding day, but the fortuneteller specifically wants to know what choices led Donna to that day. Donna is overwhelmed by a flashback of her time as a temp back at H.C. Clements, and behind her something begins to skitter towards her across the shop’s floor. Donna says she got that job because she chose to ignore Sylvia’s advice about taking another job. Donna is sucked into another flashback, this time showing Sylvia browbeating her daughter and trying to convince her to take the job she wants her to have. The central choice happened on the road: Donna chose to turn left, towards H.C. Clements, instead of turning right towards Sylvia’s job. Back in the shop, Donna is getting more and more freaked out. She demands the fortuneteller let go of her hands, and now she’s aware of something crawling on her back. The fortuneteller orders her to change her choice, this time turning right instead of left. The legs of a giant insect appear on Donna’s shoulders as she’s sucked back into the past. She turns right.
After the opening credits, which totally spoiled that Billie Piper’s going to play a major role in this episode, Donna’s at a Christmas party with some of her gal pals. Things are going well; her new boss, Jival Chowdry, just gave her a promotion to his personal assistant. Everyone’s happy for her, except for one of her friends, Alice, who can’t stop staring at her. She can’t quite explain what’s freaking her out, but she also can’t ignore the feeling. Outside, the Racnoss Webstar arrives and begins its attack on London.Everyone flees, except for a transfixed Donna and Alice, who continues to stare at Donna’s back. Before Alice turns to run, she tells Donna that there’s something on her back. Donna runs towards the ship, just as the military arrives to destroy it. She comes upon a large crowd and overhears a soldier telling his commander that a man managed to kill a big red spider thing under the city, but that the man, called the Doctor, is now dead. Donna walks away just as Rose Tyler comes running up. Donna lets her know that the Doctor is dead, and a devastated Rose says she came so far for nothing. Donna introduces herself, while Rose doesn’t give her name. Rose knows something is on Donna’s back, too, but as Donna tries to see behind her Rose vanishes.
In the next scene, Donna has been sacked by Chowdry. The Racnoss attack devastated his business, and he has to let Donna go. Donna’s in a mood to make a scene, but just then the building is shaken as a giant cloud appears above a nearby hospital. Royal Hope disappears, but Donna’s is too busy being pissed off to notice. The hospital reappears, but there was only one survivor. Back at home, Donna and Wilfred watch the news story and learn that a medical student named Martha Jones sacrificed herself to give her colleague enough air to breath. Donna doesn’t really believe the hospital got taken to the moon, no matter how convinced Wilfred is. Sylvia is busy going through Donna’s things, and we learn that Donna’s dad has passed away. An emotionally exhausted Sylvia tells Donna she’s given up on her. On the news, the surviving medical student says the day was saved by a woman named Sarah Jane Smith and her teenage sidekicks, who all died on the moon. Donna goes off to buy dinner, only to have Rose reappear in a flash of light. Rose still doesn’t introduce herself, and she’s still fixated on Donna’s back. Donna says a lot of people are staring at her back lately. Rose asks what Donna’s doing for next Christmas, and tells her she should get out of London. She knows about Donna’s raffle ticket, and says she’s going to win the raffle. Donna’s had enough, and tells Rose to leave her alone.
Donna doesn’t pass down the raffle winnings, though, and she, Sylvia and Wilfred arrive at a posh B&B in the country.  Sylvia’s in a better mood, and she and Donna bond over how much Donna’s dad would have loved this. A maid arrives with breakfast for the family, and she’s horrified by something she sees on Donna’s back. She warns Donna in Spanish that something’s on her back, and for the first time Donna almost catches sight of it. On the news, the family watches a replica of the Titanic crash into Buckingham Palace as the whole resort shakes around them. Outside, they see a giant mushroom cloud forming over what’s left of London. Wilfred reflects on the fact that he was supposed to be selling papers in the city on Christmas, and if they weren’t at the resort they’d all be dead.
As Donna and her family are now essentially refugees, they’re being relocated to Leeds. They’re sent to live in a house already occupied by several families, among others. They’re greeted by Rocco Colasanto, the eternally cheerful patriarch of a large family. The Nobles are designated to live in the kitchen. Wilfred tries to keep up a brave front, but Donna is devastated. Wilfred says America will offer the UK aid, but that is going to happen. With London no longer an option, Matron Cofelia decided the US would be a perfect place to breed a new generation of Adipose. Sixty million Americans have dissolved into baby butterballs, and America’s in too much of a crisis to help the UK now. The Nobles are too worn out to be upset at this point. At night, Sylvia reflects on everyone they’ve known who’s died while Donna promises to find work and get them a place of their own. Sylvia doesn’t think it will get better; even the bees are going missing. The Colasantos begin having a singalong outside and Donna goes to raise hell, but Wilfred’s a part of the ruckus and Donna and Sylvia join in. The Nobles begin to feel happy in their new home, but then shots begin ringing out outside. The ATMOS devices in the cars have started emitting poison gas, and the soldiers are trying to shoot the devices. One of them catches sight of Donna’s back and pulls his gun on her. He demands she turn around, but when she does there’s nothing there. Donna catches sight of the flashing lights that herald Rose’s arrival.
Rose and Donna go for a walk and Rose explains the deal with the ATMOS devices. She tells Donna Torchwood is taking steps to stop the Sontarans, and they succeed, but they died in the process. She tells Donna that none of this was supposed to happen. The Doctor stopped it all, and Donna knew him. She tries to explain that Donna used to be a companion, and that she saved the Doctor’s life by convincing him to leave after he defeated the Racnoss Queen. Donna has a flashback to that night, but she gets spooked and starts to storm off. Rose says something worse is coming, and that she’s been pulled here from another universe to stop it. Donna doesn’t understand what she’s supposed to do with this information; she beats herself up and calls herself nothing, but Rose says she’s the most important woman in the whole of creation. Donna’s tired, though. Rose says she needs Donna to come with her, but Donna turns her down. She tells Donna she’ll be back in three weeks, and that Donna will come with her only to end up dying. She vanishes before Donna’s eyes. Back home, the Colasantos are being sent off to labor camps. England is only for the English at this point, and any immigrants are being sent away. Colasanto tries to keep up a brave face for Donna, but Wilfred, who served in WWII, knows what’s up. He and Colasanto share a heartbreaking look before the whole family is loaded onto a truck. Wilfred explains to Donna that they’re in the middle of a holocaust. Donna runs after the truck to try to find out where the Colasantos are being taken, but the truck doesn’t stop.
Back inside the now-empty house, Sylvia’s basically dead inside. Donna tells her she asked about work, but no one will hire her. In effort to get her mother talking, Donna calls herself a disappointment and Sylvia agrees. Later, Donna and Wilfred go out for some stargazing. Donna keeps beating herself up, but Wilfred is too distracted to contradict her. He’s noticed something is wrong; an entire constellation is missing. He and Donna look at the sky, and one by one the stars begin to go out before their eyes. Donna’s made up her mind. She turns to find Rose right behind her, and tells her she’s ready. Rose takes her to a UNIT base, where Rose and Donna are both greeted by Captain Erisa Magambo. Rose hasn’t given Magambo her name, either. Nearby, the TARDIS has been wired up to some sort of machine. Rose gets Donna to go inside the TARDIS, and she’s promptly freaked out. The inside of the ship is dark and cold, but Donna’s still amazed by it. Rose says the ship is dying, but it’s still trying to help. Rose explains that the Doctor was a Time Lord, and Donna doesn’t understand what someone like that would want with her. Rose explains that the Doc thought she was brilliant, and that he made everyone feel that way when they were around him. Donna picks up that Rose and the Doc had a thing, but then Rose catches sight of the thing on Donna’s back again. Rose asks if Donna wants to see the thing, and at first Donna says no. She finally says yes, and steps into a circle of mirrors hooked up to the TARDIS.
Lights come on, but Donna’s too scared to open her eyes and see thing. Rose convinces her to, and she finally sees the giant bug on her back. She’s horrified, and Rose says they don’t know what the thing is. They do know it feeds off of time, though, specifically by changing time. Donna wants it off her back, but Rose says they can’t even touch the thing. Donna is straight freakin; she calls Rose a liar for telling her she was special, when the whole time it was this thing that was special while Donna was just its host. Rose says that isn’t it true, and that Donna is somehow causing reality to bend around her. Rose is convinced that they need the Doctor, but they also need Donna to be with him. Captain Magambo powers off the machine and Donna can’t see the thing anymore, but she knows it’s still there. Rose says that in order to get rid of it, Donna’s going to travel in time.
Rose tells her she’s got to go back in time and stop herself from turning right when she was meant to turn left. Donna gets rigged up in a ramshackle time jacket and the machine powers up around her. Donna says she’s ready, and that she understands. Rose said she was going to die, but what she meant is that this world, the world in which Donna never meets the Doctor, isn’t going to exist anymore. Donna’s okay with this, because a better world will exist in its place. Donna’s sure she won’t really die, but Rose doesn’t confirm this. As the machine powers up around her, Donna begins to freak out again. How can she die if she’s supposed to meet the Doctor? The machine activates, and Donna’s on a street in the middle of London. There’s a problem, though; she got transported to Sutton Court, which is nowhere near where she needs to be to stop herself from turning right. She’s only got a few minutes to get half a mile away, so she begins to run.
At the intersection, Sylvia is trying to convince Donna to take the job with Chowdry. Our Donna’s busting ass to get to the intersection in time, but she can only go so fast. She knows she can’t reach the car in time to stop herself, and she remembers that Rose told her she’s going to die. She steps out in front of an oncoming truck and is hit. In the car, Donna and Sylvia see a traffic jam start to form. As she’s dying, our Donna is visited by Rose again. Rose gives her a message, and Donna dies. Back in the car, the traffic jam is enough of an excuse for Donna to turn left. All of history rewrites itself, and, back in the fortuneteller’s shop on Shan Shen, the creature falls off of Donna’s back. The fortuneteller is horrified; how could Donna be so strong? What is she? What will she become?
The Doctor arrives, and Donna embraces him. He examines the creature while Donna tries to remember what happened. Her memories of the alternate reality is slipping away. The Doc explains that the thing is part of the Trickster’s Brigade, and that it formed an entire parallel world around Donna. He points out that this is the second time this has happened; she had a life built around her in the library a few episodes ago, too. The Doctor notices there are a lot of coincidences surrounding Donna; the Doc met her, then he met her grandfather, then he met her again. It’s almost like something’s binding them together. Donna says she’s nothing special, but the Doc says she’s brilliant. That jogs Donna’s memory, and she remembers what Rose said about the coming darkness. She doesn’t know Rose’s name, but she remembers her being blonde. Donna remembers the two words Rose gave her to tell the Doctor: Bad Wolf.
The Doc runs outside, and suddenly the words Bad Wolf are all over Shan Shen, and even the words written on the front of the TARDIS have changed. Donna asks what Bad Wolf is, and the Doctor says it’s the end of the universe.
The End.
~~~~~
Man, the heavy hitters just keep coming! I don’t know if it’s because Donna’s so much more mature than the Doc’s previous companions, but this season has been so much darker than the first three I’ve covered. This wasn’t the anxiety factory that “Midnight” was, but man was this a rough one. I thought Catherine Tate really killed it with her performance this time, even if I’m starting to get a little miffed at the treatment Donna’s getting. Aside from Captain Jack and Adam, Rose and Martha both got to be the only companions during their seasons. We’re 11 episodes into Donna’s run, and Martha’s been around for three of those episodes while Rose has been popping up the whole time only to be a full on costar in this one. Let Donna have her own season!
With that out of my system, I will say that Jacqueline King’s performance was heartbreaking, even if Sylvia is by far the worst mother of a companion we’ve seen so far, and I dug the whole vibe of Shan Shen (even if the fortuneteller’s performance didn’t blow me away). The design of the creature was kind of hokey for me, but I loved the atmosphere everyone built up around it. And I love that all of this was hinted to all the way back in “The Fires of Pompeii”, when Lucius Petrus told Donna she had something on her back. I loved all of the callbacks here, and it was interesting to see how the world would cope without the Doctor to watch out for it.
I give “Turn Left” QQQQ½ on the Five Q Scale.
We’ll see you again on Tuesday when Eli will feel paternal in the next episode of The Golden Girls, “Bringing Up Baby”, and then I’ll be back on Wednesday to kick off the season finale of Doctor Who with “The Stolen Earth”.
Until then, thanks for reading, thanks for turning and thanks for being One of Us!
