Ink Demonth: Crazy Concerto
Hey guys. Jess here coming into Ink Demonth a little late. I’ve been on a road trip for half the month that really took the wind out of me both physically and creatively. I’m going to try completing my Ink Demonth entries for this month and September if I have to.
Anyway, for Ink Demonth, I wanted to write some drabbles for my Ink Gluttony AU and practice building up the world and characters for the main stories in the AU. Nearly most of these drabbles will be canon except for certain ones which I will get to later.
My first entry is for Music titled “Crazy Concerto”. Originally, I wanted this to be longer, but figured that I could expand it more in “The Real Demon”.
Without further ado, please enjoy under the cut!
"You want to play an instrument?" Sammy asked as he glanced over to the small imp next to his desk. It seemed tedious and ludicrous enough that Joey asked him to babysit the toon, but it was even more so when the dancing demon himself was asking him about instruments.
Bendy laid on the floor next to Sammy's desk with nothing but pieces of paper and a few crayons. He nodded while looking up at Sammy.
"Please Sammy? Boris gets to play the clarinet and you're the best music player I know. I'm eager to learn!"
Sammy placed down his pen and pondered. "I don't know... I am a busy man and picking an instrument isn't that simple enough. And what would Joey say? You're more of a dancer than a musician." The man didn't have the heart to tell Bendy that Joey specifically had an image to uphold when it came to Bendy. That included playing instruments and actual singing. The least he could allow was music notes used as a gag or toon logic. For the music director, it was a waste of creativity and opportunity.
"What Joey won't know won't hurt him!" Bendy pleaded, "Only us and the music department will know about it. I'll even leave ya alone once a week?"
Sammy raised his eyebrow, his blue and green eyes staring right at the toon. After a few seconds, he sighed. "Alright. I guess it wouldn't hurt to spend some time teaching someone with possible potential." Bendy jumped up and cheered, letting out a whistling laugh.
"This is called a violin, a stringed instrument." Samuel Lawrence said as he presented a violin and bow to Bendy in the main orchestra room. "It can be soft and gentle or strong and loud. Like so." He tuned the violin, got into position, and played a soft melody. The bow glided against the strings as if sliding on ice. The two-foot-tall demon watched in awe, his mouth hanging open. When Sammy finished, Bendy clapped with glee.
"See? This is a kind of instrument I would play to represent you. Now you try." Sammy helped Bendy get into position. It was difficult due to Bendy's lack of a neck, but they managed. When Sammy felt that Bendy was holding the violin and bow the right way, he slowly let go and then mimed moving the bow.
With a smile, Bendy attempted to copy Sammy's movement... only to push too hard and the bow to fly right out of his hands, almost breaking the sound booth window across from them. He blinked when he heard no sounds coming from the violin and stared silently at it in confusion. Sammy winced.
"You're a little strong there. Perhaps you'll need a bigger instrument. Like a cello." The music director went to a corner, then came back with what looked like a giant violin to the devil. Bendy stared at the cello before he went up to it and tried to lift it up into position as if it were a violin. Sammy immediately stopped him.
"No, no! There's no need for that. It stays on the floor." To demonstrate, Sammy plucked a few strings on the cello. He then got a stool and helped Bendy upon it to reach the strings better. Thinking that the cello would be more durable, the demon started plucking random notes. After a minute of plucking, Bendy winced and pulled back his hand. The fingertips of his gloves seemed sore and pulsing.
"Ow... it's too strong!"
Sammy pinched the bridge of his forehead, resisting the urge to smack his head against the wall. Humans were much more simple to educate than demons, he figured. He then realized that with people like Wally, he was dealing with the lesser of two evils. However, Sammy Lawrence was a musician who never backed down on someone wanting to learn from him before.
"Okay... let's try a completely different instrument. Something a lot smaller. How about a harmonica?"
The harmonica didn't work out. A couple of times it would almost fly off of Bendy's hands and it ended quickly when the toon somehow swallowed it. It took a while for Sammy to get it out of the little imp.
The woodwinds and brass didn't work out either. Every time Bendy inhaled and blew into an instrument, a raspberry or a discordant wheeze came out as a result.
Drums? He broke them on impact.
Piano? There was promise, but there was also times where Bendy would miss the keys and ended up with fingers tied into fumbled knots.
And Sammy knew very well not to give the demon cymbals or his precious banjo. He wanted to at least keep what was left of his sanity. After an hour of trial and error, the music director was about to rip out his long brown hair when he heard Bendy pipe up.
"What's this?"
Sammy turned his head to see the toon hovering over a guitar that laid on top of a chair in the far corner of the large room right nearby the recording booth. The human blinked.
"It's a guitar. One of my musicians must have left it here. Does it intrigue you?"
Bendy didn't answer at first. Without another word, he reached out and plucked one of the guitar's strings with his finger. This felt more relaxing than the violin or cello.
"Wow..." Bendy smiled as his pie-cut eyes almost sparkled. He turned to Sammy and pouted his lip, practically begging him.
The music director's eye twitched before he sighed. At least it wasn't his banjo.
"Fine, but this is the last instrument." The little demon nodded. Wanting to try something different, Sammy knelt down in front of Bendy and talked it through to him, giving instructions in a softer tone. Although he saw the star of the studio as a demonic annoyance, it was easy to forget that Bendy was also a child in a way. Sammy just had to treat him as if he were a human boy. At least, he thought that was the case.
Bendy listened in silence as he watched Sammy mime the position and talked it through. For some reason, the guitar was calling out to him more than the other instruments did. Sure he wanted to learn how to play other instruments such as the violin and piano, but it was the guitar that hooked him in. It just screamed his name to play. This was the instrument that he wanted to be serious on. He could tell.
It took almost an hour, but Bendy managed to hold the large guitar in the right position and strum the basic notes on it. It made Sammy's eyes widen in surprise.
"Amazing. You can be taught after all!" Sammy nodded as he watched Bendy strum some more. "I think that'll be enough for today. When I'm able to, I'll introduce you to one of the members of my orchestra. His name is Ezekiel and his best instrument is the guitar. Whenever you visit the music department, you'll go to him. Do we have an agreement?"
The little demon stopped playing, thought about it, then nodded with a small grin. "Mm-hmm. I can't wait to meet him!" He continued to strum in silence. Sammy sighed in relief. At least it resulted in minor damage and the promise of peace this time. He hoped this would last for the rest of his days in the studio.

Over the next month, Liam and Saige spent every free moment together. It was like unlocking a secret compartment with the other. Liam, has never felt so free and uninhibited with Saige. Romance was never a feeling he sought out, that was Leo’s arena. They spent days touring the grandest historic and romantic spots around Cordonia, occasional afternoon were spent with friends, and nights spent loving the private kisses and sharing embraces. Each night before bed , they would spent at least an hour just talking about anything and everything. Then whenever they could tear the phone away from their ears, the texting commenced.
Liam:I love that I get to see you everyday .
Saige:It’s wonderful to be seen.. especially by you.
Liam:I have become a neglectful prince.luckily I get a reprieve from some of the meetings. My father shoots me these looks, but being with you is worth it.
Saige smiled reading his text to her, such warmth in his words. She knew that she had become dependent on those moments with Liam. Her eyes lit up every time she saw his handsome face. She met him in her dreams each night… his piercing blue eyes were the featured star of her dreams. Saige recalled a few instances when Olivia found her mumbling Liam’s name. She would tease her relentlessly. Olivia could always tell when Saige was texting Liam or the reverse. She had this way of twirling her hair and biting her lip while smirking.
“I take it, you and the prince have plans for this evening?”,Olivia posed the question.”You seem really happy Saige… I’m glad you are enjoying this time with him. Liam … he’s a good guy, your good for him.”, she nodded thoughtfully.
“ Well… he’s good for me too, at least the time I have left in Cordonia.”, she smiled sadly. “I never expected anything to come from my time in Cordonia, other than a few drunken parties with you as my costar.”, she giggled. “Seriously, I don’t know what will transpire when I head home to Texas. I know that it’s going to be difficult to leave him behind. So I can only think about the here and now.”, Saige shrugged and grinned. She knew in her heart that she was getting extremely close to Liam and was developing feelings far deeper than she cared to admit… especially to her friend.
“Saige, I’m not asking you to map out the rest of your life , just have fun.”,she squeezed her hand encouragingly. Olivia turned to walk out the room leaving Saige alone with her thoughts. What would she do a half of a world away from Liam? They hadn’t made any commitments or plans long term, but it was an unspoken decision that they were pursuing a relationship. Suddenly she was pulled from her thoughts by her phone ringing.
“Hello.. hey you? I thought you were going to bed?”, she smiled sliding down into the plush pillows surrounding her head.
“I just had to hear the voice of an angel again before I closed my eyes. I also wanted to ask you if you would accompany me to a ball tomorrow night. You wouldn’t have to worry about anything… I could have a dress reserved for you at the palace boutique.. I could make all the arrangements… just say yes.”, he excitedly waited for her answer.
“Liam, I’ve never been to a fancy ball before. What would people think seeing us together? I mean at such a public event? ,she nervously laughed. “ I’m not presuming to know what your intentions are Liam… I just know we haven’t been out in public a lot, and we are enjoying each other’s company.”, her voice cracked noticeably.
“Saige, my intentions are that I would love nothing more than to spend all my free time.. every waking hour with you.”, he whispered adoringly. “I don’t care about people seeing us together.. they will think that I am extremely lucky to have such a beautiful woman on my arm.”, he beamed.
The connection went silent for several moments, Liam anxiously awaiting her response. He felt a sense of excitement on the possibility of sharing a glimpse into his life with this fascinating woman. He sat up posture erect, eager to hear her utter that one magical word… yes.
Saige let out a deep sigh, smiled, and released the hopeful breath, “Yes Liam, I will be happy to join you as your date for the ball. There’s just one problem… what about Liv? I wouldn’t feel right leaving her in her own. Perhaps your friend Drake can escort her, you know like a double date? I wouldn’t feel as bad if she had someone to keep her company.”, Saige laughed silently knowing the reaction Olivia would have being made to spend time publicly with Drake.
Liam quickly responded, “ Drake owes me a favor, I will assure you that we all will have a wonderful evening. Leave all the convincing to me.”, he pleaded with her hoping.
“ Very well… I look forward to what the evening will bring us tomorrow.”, she whispered softly. “ Good night Liam, I will see you tomorrow.”her heart was secretly bursting.
“Good night Saige… tomorrow will be an amazing night to remember.”,and they ended the call , both clutching their phone close to heart.A short time later Saige drifted off to sleep with a smile on her face. Thinking of dancing closely held in Liam’s strong arms.
***
The following afternoon Saige and Olivia were picked up by a car sent from the palace to collect them early to get dressed for the evening.Liam wanted to insure that everything went smoothly. He had sent a text to Saige that morning asking if she and Liv would mind coming to the palace early to get ready. He had left word with the boutique several selections he had felt would be perfect for Saige. She decided on a beautiful sheer pale pink brocade strapless A line gown . Olivia convinced Saige to wear her hair pulls into a sophisticated side bun accentuating her facial features and soft makeup and lips. “Oh my Olivia, this is a couture gown… it’s gorgeous!”, she excitedly whispered in Olivia’s ear. “Saige, it is made for you.”, she nodded and grinned.
“I can’t believe he chose this as an option for me. To think there were a half dozen gowns he personally picked out with me in mind.”, she giggled.Olivia found a form fitting A line gown in her signature red color. The ladies headed for the boutique door when they were greeted by a waiting Liam and Drake. Liam felt his jaw drop as he captured the sight of Saige in the perfect gown, “ Saige, you are a stunning vision.”, he gasped softly. He takes her hand and captured her hand in a reserved kiss. His eyes slowly traveled up the full length of her body. Blue eyes meeting , silently communicating without a word. “Why don’t you two get a room already?,Olivia teased as Drake laughed. Saige shot her a glare from the comment.
“Pay them no mind my angel, they are just jealous of your captivating beauty.”, he winked at her playfully. The four walked away moments away from entering the ballroom. He smiled softly as the double ornate doors were opened to reveal the elegantly decorated room with opulent floral arrangements, Crystal chandeliers, golden crown molding, champagne fountains, five Star appetizers, and an orchestra.
“So Liv,are you looking forward to dancing this evening?”, she laughed. The strings of the orchestra swelled as King Constantine led Queen Regina our onto the dance floor to lead the Cordonian Waltz, soon joined by Crowned prince Leo and Prince Liam was expected to join in as a glowing representation of the royal family. Normally Liam would sit out most opening dances until absolutely necessary. “Lady Saige, will you do me the honor of this dance?”, he bowed in her direction. She curtsied and smile, “ it will be my pleasure your highness.” In a flash , Liam led her to the center of the floor joining his family in the opening dance, “ I have never done the Cordonian waltz”, she whispered embarrassed. Liam gazed deeply into her piercing blue eyes, “just follow my lead.” Liam glided around the ballroom holding Saige close, and spinning her out and pulled back against his chest. “I could get used this… feeling you wrapped in my arms.”, his warm breath teased her lobe as he whispered. Saige dropped her gaze smiling, before looking over her shoulder into the inviting blue eyes of her date. “You certainly know how to make a girl blush”, she smirked. “It’s almost time to change partners, you will follow the same steps when we change partners. Don’t be nervous, my family won’t bite.”, he smiled giving her a little smirk. The music swelled once more as the group changed partners, Saige found herself dancing with the king.
Saige curtsied before taking the hand of King Constantine. “ So your the young lady that has been a distraction for my son, drawing his attention from his duties.”, he smiled as his large hand gripped the small of her back a little too tightly. “ I can certainly see why he is enchanted with your beauty. You are a sight for any man fortunate enough to come in contact with you.”, he spun her out and back with her back facing his chest. Constantine seemed to pull Saige a little too close, it felt a bit scandalous the close proximity of her body to the King. She started to feel a bit uncomfortable at how closely he held her, she felt her heart rate increase, waiting for the next partner change. “Thank you your majesty,” she averted her eyes. The music once again signaled a change. Liam collected Saige’s hand again as the piece came to an end. Liam smiled and acknowledged his father. Constantine gestured for them to leave the floor finding a nook to converse. “ Liam, so where have you been hiding your friend?”, he had a drawl on the word friend. The wait staff bought glass after glass of champagne, whiskey, and scotch for the king. His voice became somewhat louder the more he drank. “Father this is lady Saige, she’s visiting from America.”, he smiled. Constantine smirked before dipping his head grabbing Saige’s hand kissing it, lips lingering a little long. She smiled uncomfortably, retrieving her hand from his grasp.
“It’s nice to meet you sir”, voice low and squeaked .She surveys the room for Olivia, looking for an escape route. Liam beamed as he watched Saige command the attention of the king. “ I was not hiding her father… we were simply getting to know each other better.”, he gazed deeply into her eyes. Constantine stared at Saige , seemingly undressing her with his eyes. She looked away, hand crossing her chest trying to conceal herself from his heavy gaze. “Excuse me gentlemen… I need to head to the ladies room.”, she stood and curtsied once again. Liam offered to escort her, but she declined, “ I will find my way. Thank you Liam.”
Saige disappeared through the crowd , asking a staff member for directions to the ladies room. She dabbed her face with cool water, freshened her makeup, and took a moment to collect her thoughts after the odd exchange.Saige rolled her shoulders trying to relax before joining Liam in the ballroom. No sooner than she made her way out of the ladies room, she was greeted by a smiling Liam leaning against the wall. “There you are angel.. I wanted to steal you away for a while.” Liam reaches his hand for Saige’s hand leading her down to a private study to steal a moment.
The study was simply lit only by the moonlight shining in a corner of the room. The minute the door closed, Liam’s lips went to work kissing Saige’s cheek, her lips, her neck, her bare shoulder, causing her to get lost in the feel of his wet kisses. The blend of his touches and her growing feelings for him. “Saige.. you are so beautiful”, he captured her lips in a passionate kiss, urgent and hungry. Liam wrapped Saige in his arms , pulling her waist flush against himself. He cupped her face in his hands holding steady as his tongue softly glided against her lip, asking permission for entrance. Saige’s lips slightly parted as their tongues gently massage each other softly ,welcoming the tango in sync , breathless. Liam’s hands moved down , tickling the small of her back, Fire growing with his closeness and desire as he moved down stroking her thigh in a tantalizing circles of delight. “Yes?”, he gasped out pulling back locking with her eyes entranced with her gaze.
Saige paused before nodding slowly, agreeing that this too is something that was in her thoughts too. “Liam”, she snakes her arms around his neck, gently tugging as she deepened the next kiss. His eyes flashed a darkened charcoal hue, eyes lust blown, fingers toying with the lace covering her sex. He teased her clit with his thumb, gently sucking her neck. “Oh god, Liam”, she chanted softly. Liam dropped to his knee, slowly guiding her thong down her thighs. Saige’s hand gripped his waistband, hastily unbuckling his belt, button and zipper. Her eyes widened when her slender hand gripped his thick length, she worked her hand up and down his shaft, feeling his hardened length in her palm. Liam led Saige to the couch, she settled on her knees leaning across the arm of the couch. He ran his fingers between her slick folds, “baby, your so wet for me.”, he groaned lowly near her ear, nipping between his teeth.
Saige arched her back, Liam lifted the back of her gown exposing her perfectly rounded ass, he lined himself up to her dripping entrance and slowly eased inside of her wanting hole. Liam carefully entered her, feeling her walls stretch around his member, filling every bit of her. Saige tensed for a moment adjusting to the overwhelming feeling of his cock encapsulated within her, he started to move against her , reveling in the amazing thrusts he worked within her fluttering sex. “God Liam… please .. don’t stop.”, she cried out in a breathy moan. The deeper he hit her spot, the wetter she became. Saige moved her hips pushing back each time he pierced her core, sending a shiver throughout her body. “Saige you feel amazing. You feel better than I imagined.”, he grunted out in a growing panting as her felt her sex retracting and pulsing on his tip each time he worked in and out of her. Liam picked up the pace driving harder and deeper, Saige’s breathing becoming uneven and labored from fighting to catch her breath. Saige felt a deep yearning feeling Liam inside and his hands gripping her ass cheeks. “ Liam.. I’m gonna cum..”, she whimpered breathlessly. Hearing her moans softly whisper his name, built up his own need to release, “fuck Saige… ahhh you feel so damn good.”, his words became grunts as he and Saige were both pushed over the edge of release. Each felt their bodies jerking, tensing, and finally relaxing from sharing an explosive eruption of pleasure. Liam wrapped Saige in his arms from behind, holding her until they came down from the high of making love for the first time. “That was amazing “, he softly kissed her neck. Saige’s eyes fluttered closed relishing the feel of being in his arms. “I was not expecting that tonight Liam”, She giggled. “Hey… I’m going to get a warm cloth for you and then I’ll go get us some drinks and snacks. I’m not quite ready to share you with the rest of the court yet.”, he kissed her lips softly smiling. Liam went into the bathroom and retrieved a warm wet towel to clean her up. “
“I’ll be back shortly, just hang out and relax.”, he anxiously exited the study headed for the ballroom.Liam stopped to chat briefly with Olivia and Drake as he made his way back into the ballroom. “Where are you off too looking like the cat that swallowed the canary?”, Drake shook his head smirking knowingly. “ I’m going to get a few things , you two have fun.” Liam got stopped by several nobles making idle small talk causing him to lose track of his time.
****
Back in the study, still basking in the recent memory of being with Liam in that way, Saige smiled to herself wrapping her arms around herself. She stood in front of the balcony doors staring at the garden bathed by the moonlight. After several moments she heard the study door open, and she smiled expecting Liam to return to her side. “Your finally back… I thought you were coming back sooner”,she giggled still with her back to the door. She heard a low groan escape from his chest. She leaned her head to side, eyes closed anticipating feeling his lips on her slick skin. Saige felt a pair of strong hands gripping her breasts roughly. “Somebody is eager”,she smirked . No words were spoken while she felt the hardening in his pants restricted by the fabric. Saige felt his hands pulling her lower half against his groin, gripping harder than before. His hands started pushing the lower half of her dress up over her hips that were still bare since she hadn’t returned her thong to her privates figuring Liam may want to fool around some more. The grip got tighter than she was comfortable with when she heard the voice murmur intoxicatingly “I bet your nice piece of ass… how about you let me find out.”, Saige’s eyes stretched in horror. She suddenly realized that it wasn’t Liam that holding her, but King Constantine. Saige tried to peel his fingers from around her waist and pulled at the fabric of her gown trying to cover her ass again, unsuccessfully. “Let me go”, she fought to get her words out from her throat that felt like it was closing.Constantine twisted her body to face him as he forced his tongue down her throat, breath wreaking of whiskey and scotch. “Stop it!”, she felt her words muffled against his lips that were bruising against her. King Constantine slapped her face and it sent her falling to the floor. “Please.. stop… your making a mistake.. you. are.hurting me”, she silently cried. Saige felt Constantine’s legs on either side of her try to hold her down as he wrestled to undo his clasp of his trousers. She wriggled back and forth causing his drunken stature to crash to the floor allowing her a moment to make her way to the door and she ran down the stairs to the front of the palace. Saige saw the waiting car from this afternoon and frantically jumped inside instructing the driver to take her back to Lythikos. Saige curled up in the back seat , tears flooding her eyesight causing her vision to become blurry. She couldn’t believe that this had happened to her. She shot out of the backseat and into the house, straight up the stairs to shower. Saige ripped away the gown and turned on the water allowing it to run as hot as she could get it. She slipped down to the floor of the shower rocking holding her knees to her chest and she screamed and cried uncontrollably.
*****
Back at the palace Liam had finally freed himself from ballroom and headed back to the study. “Saige, I’m so sorry I was detained. Everywhere I turned there was a noble asking for a moment of my time”, he laughed apologetically. “I came baring snacks and drinks”, the room was eerily silent. He paused, “Saige?.... Saige?, Where are you?”, he was bewildered that she was no longer in the study. Liam took off back down the halls which he came, finally re-emerging in the ballroom where he spotted Olivia and Drake. “Have you two seen Saige? I left her a while ago and now there’s no sight of her anywhere.”, concern etched in his face. “ I figured she was somewhere with you , maybe getting a private tour of the palace “, Olivia raised her brows insinuating naughty thoughts. “ I got caught up in here when I came for refreshments for us, but now she seems to have disappeared.” Olivia reached in her clutch and fished out her phone, she quickly typed out a message to Saige, “Where are you Saige?...Your Prince Charming is looking for you.”
No response after several minutes, liam decided to text her too, “ Angel, where did you go? Please text me… I was worried when you were gone.” Again no response… ten minutes later a staff member approached Liam, Olivia, and Drake with a small clutch purse. “ Sir, I found this bag over on one of the tables unattended. “ That’s Saige’s purse, she’d never leave her bag alone”, Olivia proclaimed. She opened her purse and found her phone with the waiting messages unanswered. “Liam, I’m going to head home in case she headed there… I’ll call if I hear anything… you better do the same.”, she pointed at his chest. Drake offered to drive Olivia home when they realized the car was gone.
Olivia arrived home an hour later and instantly ascended the stairs two at a time leaving Drake at the door. She opened the door to Saige’s room and found her in the bed fast asleep. She let out a sigh of relief, ”good… she’s here.” She walked back down the stairs to meet Drake and informed him about Saige. “She’s up in her room . I’ll call Liam and let him know.”, she she shook her head as she dialed the number.
“Liam… she’s here in bed. I didn’t want to wake her, she seemed so peaceful… I’ll have her call you in the morning when she wakes up.. Good night Li”,she ended the call . “Well since your here, why don’t we burn off some of this energy”,Drake smirked as Olivia led him to her bedroom. She closed the door and cranked up the music to indulge in a little marshmallow games.
****
Liam sat up in his bed later that night replaying the events of the evening in his head wondering why Saige would suddenly leave without a word. He had tried to text her several times throughout the night, to no avail. Finally he tapped the last message before attempting to sleep, “Saige my angel, I had a good time with you… I hope I didn’t do anything that made you feel uncomfortable or disrespected. Please give me a call .. Thinking of you L.” He tucked away his phone and attempted to let sleep overtake his body. Liam was oblivious to the fact that the woman that was quickly stealing his heart was now wallowing in her own personal hell courtesy of his father….

As a child, one of my favourite weekly events were the concerts. Each Saturday would be spent getting ready to go to the Opera House. My mother would have my nurse and a ladies maid spend the morning curling and styling my hair before dressing me in my most elaborate puffy gown.
Then, after an early afternoon tea, father, mother, Victor and I would climb into our carriage and go to the show.
I would always run out of the carriage as soon as the door opened, Victor trailing behind me. We would stand in the middle of the lobby and watch all the people coming in. Some nights the Carlyles would come. Those were the best nights. Phillip would join Victor and me as we made up stories for each of the people who entered. Eventually, just before the show would begin, my parents would come over and send Phillip back to his parents. My father would pick up Victor and carry him to the seats while mother scolded me for running and other improper lady behaviours before grabbing my hand and marching us to our seats.
Some nights we would watch a singer, others an orchestra. Each time I was filled with magical music and fell into a blissful state that would last the entire night.
Unfortunately, Jenny Lind's performance did not last.
Jenny came to America a week after we returned. Many of the circus cast was fairly excited and I was too. I hadn't been to the Opera House since my mother got pregnant with Thomas and said the loud noise wasn't good for a baby's ears. For many, this would be their first show.
Lettie, Anne, and a couple of the other girls, including myself, went to get dresses for the day. Lottie choose a tight blue dress with a black belt and fingerless gloves. Anne picked a dress with a blue skirt and a sheer top with butterflies covering her chest and shoulders. She also had a blue and green hat which matched her dress. I decided to stick with their blue theme and choose a simple light blue dress with long sleeves that almost reached my wrist but a less puffed skirt then the dress I had worn in England.
As the time for the show came near I headed to the circus. Lettie, Anne, and several others from the circus were going to meet up beforehand and go all together. Walking through the halls to the front door of the Barnum's house, I passed Caroline struggling to pin part of Helen's hair back.
"Would you like some help?" I asked.
She jumped at my words but replied "Yes please," with a grateful sigh.
I moved into the room and pushed the pins into place. Helen was wearing a greenish-blue dress. I picked a green pin off the table and placed it in her hair.
"There," I said. "Perfect."
"Thank you Y/n!" Helen shouted.
"Yeah, thanks," Caroline added. I looked at her pink dress before grabbing a bright pink headband with a little bow and handing it to her.
"No problem," I said. "I'll see you two at the show."
When we arrived at the Opera House, we were greeted by Phillip. He quickly ran off to see where we were sitting. As we were waiting, I began people watching.
In the middle of deciding if a man was a secret agent or a master criminal in disguise, I spotted the Carlyles. They were nicely dressed and didn't bother paying attention to our group. Mr. Bennett followed slightly behind, taking in all of his surroundings. As his eyes glazed the room they landed on mine. He sent a small smile to me before realizing who I was standing with and turning his smile into a smirk.
Phillip returned and showed us to the standing room mumbling something about 'visibility'. I stood between him and Lettie, Anne on his other side and everyone else piled around and behind us.
The lights went down and Mr. Barnum walked onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. I recently had the privilege of hearing the most divine voice I've ever heard. Now, I know that sounds like Barnum humbug but I have a 100 bottles of good champagne on ice that says that this is not just another sideshow novelty. May I present, the Swedish Nightingale," he paused for dramatic effect, "Miss Jenny Lind."
Applause filled the room as the curtain rose.
Once the room was silent, the orchestra began playing and she started to sing, "I'm trying to hold to my breath, let it stay that way. Can't let this moment end. You set off a dream with me. Getting louder now. Can you hear it echoing?"
I noticed Phillip stir slightly.
"Take my hand. Will you share this with me? 'Cause darling without you."
Anne had stiffened.
"All the shine of a thousand spotlights. All the stars we steal from the night sky will never be enough, never be enough. Towers of gold are still too little. These hands could hold the world but it will never be enough, never be enough-"
I noticed Anne was relaxed and had a ghost of a smile creeping up her face. I couldn't help but wonder what was going on. I turned to my other side to see Lettie mesmerized by Jenny's song.
"-for me! Never, never. Never, never. never for me. Never enough, never enough, never enough, for me, for me, for me."
"All the shine of a thousand spotlights. All the stars we steal from the night sky, will never be enough, never be enough."
As she continued singing, a man sitting in front of us turned around and whispered to the women beside him. I recognized them immediately as Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle. I followed their gaze to Phillip and Anne.
"These hands could hold the world but it will never be enough-"
All of a sudden, Anne left the room, her smile completely gone. I gave a confused glance at Phillip and, when I didn't get a response, followed Anne.
"-Never be enough!"
"Anne!" I called. "Anne! Stop running."
"What!" she snapped. I had been chasing her and when she stopped I ran into her.
As she helped me up, I got a good look at her face. It was red and tears were slowing sliding down it. "What happened?"
"Nothing," she said quietly. Her voice was completely different from usual. The confidence which had always accompanied it before was completely gone.
"Okay," I said, giving her a hug.
"Wha-what are you d-doing?" she stuttered.
"Hugging you," I stated. "Something's wrong, but you don't want to talk. That's okay. When I'm upset, a hug always makes me feel better, so... I'm hugging you!"
She smiled and wrapped her arms around me, finally letting the tears fall.
After a few minutes, I managed to move her to a bench in the lobby. I sat there holding her hand and occasionally wiping away her tears with my handkerchief.
After a while, she spoke. "Thank you, Y/n."
"Don't worry about it."
"It's just, when he grabbed my hand and - I thought - maybe he's different. But then he let go and - and I saw these people looking at us - he's not different!"
Phillip. She was talking about Phillip. I felt a tightness in my chest.
"It's okay," I whispered as I consoled her. "Phillip- he's- well, he's new to this kind of life. He grew up like me. He learned that different is bad and that he should only be around people who were the same as him. As an only child, it was probably more enforced in him than it was for me." I looked over at Anne. She was watching me closely. I smiled at her. "I'm sure he just got scared. It's nothing to worry about."
"People are always going to look at us like that. Like we're dirt."
"Those two that were looking at you in there, they are his parents," I told her.
"Ha!" she laughed sarcastically. "Face it Y/n, Phillip and I aren't meant to be. The world is against us."
I knew there wasn't anything I could say or do to make her change her mind. But I knew someone who could.
The after-party was atrocious. All the rich families were present, excluding mine, and they were all walking around and saying things like "wasn't she absolutely marvellous" or "Mr. Barnum is quite the surprising man."
The only positive thing to happen was meeting Jenny Lind. She was very pleasant when Mr. Barnum introduced me. But our time was short as she was soon whisked away into the sea of high-value fans each wishing to converse with a European celebrity.
I was in the midst of picking up a particularly delicious looking chocolate when Mr. Barnum's voice rang out through the room.
"-Yes, yes, those are your granddaughters."
He was standing in a group with Jenny, Charity, Caroline, Helen, and two people I assumed must be their grandparents. Charity stepped forward and whispered something to P.T. before he started to raise his voice again.
"-Not here? You are afraid that I'm gonna embarrass your parents in front of their fancy friends? I really don't think that I have that power." He turned to look at the man. "An insignificant man like me... was clearly destined to lead an insignificant life."
"All that fortune and still just a tailor's boy," the man replied.
"Get out."
As the two walked out, loud laughter and shouting was heard from the hallway. I immediately recognized Lettie's laugh and ran to the door to see my friends.
P.T. beat me to the door, holding so it was blocking the group.
"Lord, that lady can sing." I heard Lettie say.
"I kno-"
"Thinks she likes a man in uniform?" Tom interrupted P.T.
"I'm sure she does. What are you doing here? You got a show in an hour, OK?" P.T.'s voice had a surprisingly accusing and rude tone.
"That's enough time for us to have at least three drinks, right? Come on-"
"No no. Lettie," he said blocking the way.
"What?" Lettie asked, just as confused as I.
"It's very crowded in here, okay? And I can't have you mingling. Who's gonna pay admission if you are out there for all the world to see." He began shutting the door. "Have a great show."
I heard someone say "Wait..." as the door closed.
Without looking at me, Mr. Barnum turned around, grabbed a glass of champagne, and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, a toast. Jenny, America may not know it yet, but they are going to love you. To Miss Lind."
I sent him a glare. His behaviour was unacceptable. He was the one who told them they were important. He is not allowed to treat them like the worthless "freaks" everyone thinks they are.
"Mr. Barnum!" I pulled him aside. As much as I was angry, I wouldn't cause a scene.
"Y/n," he said as if he hadn't noticed me when he kicked the others out.
"What was that?" He gave me a confused look. "They are people - real people - they believe in you! You better be careful, before they stop." As soon as I finished, I stormed out of the room to go find my friends.

The ice-cream dripped down the sides of her cone as she eagerly took the cold desert from the ice-cream man's hands. "Thank you!" she said cheerfully. Skipping back to her friends, they continued to walk down the street of the town. Though there were many cars and people walking by, it still seemed quiet.
"It feels really eerie today..." Yun pointed out. "We should just go back to the library now. It's too hot anyways."
"He is right. We need to keep studying for exams if we want to pass-"
"You're such a goody-two-shoes, White Snake."
"If you didn't call me 'White Snake' I might have taken that as a compliment."
"That would've been horrible."
"Will both of you cut it out? You're ruining my good mood," (Y/N) said as she stood in between the two 'friends.' "Why do you have to bicker so much?"
"Isn't it obvious, dearie? They both clearly have a crush on our dear Yona of the group," the flamboyant Jeaha spoke, sounding as though he was the most mature out of everyone there. But quite the contrary; the others believed him to be the most juvenile out of all of them.
The crimson-haired girl started blushing profusely at Jeaha's remark, and Hak shortly after started bursting into laughter. "You look ridiculous when you're trying to hide your face like that, Princess."
"W-Why do you call me that all the time? It's so annoying...!"
"Because you're small and helpless just like every other princess in fairy tales."
"Princesses are pretty, too~!"
The bickering further continued, not ceasing until Yun made it clear that he had had enough by giving everyone an earful. And after Kija's relentless complaining about their lack of productivity, which is what the hang out was originally designed to be for, they headed back to the town's main library and looked over their subjects.
"(Y/N) ... What are you studying?" the quiet one of the group, Shinah, asked shyly.
"Oh, I've got a History exam coming up. Geography, too."
"Well well, it just so happens that I have those exams too, (Y/N)-dearie. Should we study for them together elsewhere?"
"You're such a perv! But... that might be better actually," (Y/N) admitted. "Okay then, why don't we go look for some books and meet up with the others later?"
"Lead the way, my dear," he said as he bowed down like a gentleman. On that note, the two friends left the rest of the group to go and study on their own.
"Is it just me... or do Jeaha and (Y/N) look like they've been pretty close lately?" Yun pointed out.
"Droopy Eyes always wants to spend time with (Y/N) and Yona," Hak brusquely replied, choosing not to care about the brought-up topic.
"Zeno wants to spend more time with the girls, too..."
"But you hang out with us all the time, Zeno!" Yona quickly replied before he could feel any more down than he had suddenly become.
"That's true, you're like a brother to us, and we'll always be with you-"
"Okay, that's enough philosophical talk for one day." As they continued to talk about why Jeaha almost seemed desperate to be with (Y/N), not only Hak, but Shinah also stayed very silent. His expression came across as one of disinterest, but it truly meant the feeling of dejection.
(Y/N) and Shinah weren't super close, but she seemed to be closer with everyone else in the group. The blue-haired boy wanted to change that, but he was so shy and quiet by nature that every time he tried, it wouldn't get very far or meaningful. He couldn't pinpoint it exactly, but it was like his gut didn't like the idea of (Y/N) being so friendly to everyone else.
"Shinah, aren't you going to study? You haven't even opened up your books yet," Yona pointed out.
"Ah... right," he timidly replied, embarrassed about how he must've looked just now.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
"Zeno needs to study more, because I couldn't sit still long enough," he pouted with a childish face. "I'm going to go home now. Zeno will see you later!" He smiled and waved as he jogged in one of the splitting directions at the intersection they all stood at.
"Yeah, I'll head off, too. Say hi to the old man for me, Princess," Hak said as he too, departed in another direction. One by one, each of the friends began to part ways for the evening, bidding their 'see you laters' until they were to meet up again in the near future.
The sun drowned in the horizon, its rays of light glimmering in the darkness of the faded clouds and the pale moon shining from the stars. The only ones left standing at the footpath of the intersection were Shinah and (Y/N).
"Did you study a lot.... with Jeaha?" Shinah started.
"Yeah, kinda... He wasn't paying a lot of attention to what I was telling him, and he just kept on telling me how cute I looked when I was focused. I swear, he's such a creep sometimes." A stillness followed after (Y/N)'s words, like they were both thinking about what she just said. "You don't think... he has a crush on me, do you?" she asked in a quieter voice, as if she were to be asking the question to herself.
Shinah stiffened at her question, not sure if she was looking for an answer or just thinking aloud. But those words, they felt like they had morphed into some sort of unseen force and tore his heart in two. All the possible scenes played in his mind; the two holding hands, going out to cafes and having the time of their lives together. His broken heart yearned for such pleasure, but this was the reason it was broken in the first place.
"Because if he did have a crush on me, that would be a little annoying to try and deal with."
"N-No, I... he doesn't," he unknowingly blurted out quickly.
"Well that's good. I hope that's not the case..." she trailed off as she heaved a sigh, admiring the night's beauty she was so envious of. She only wished she could have that kind of beauty for herself. "I guess I should get going too, then." She began walking off in the same direction as Zeno did before.
Before completely vanishing in the dark of night, she turned around, her hair dancing like waves during the low tide in slow motion. The star-struck Shinah felt his worries dissipate in the atmosphere as her smile shone brighter than the full moon in the galaxy above. "I'll see you later!" she waved back as she finally disappeared.
Silence. Nothing but the sounds of swaying leaves on the evergreen trees close by. His breath was taken away by one simple action, the gesture of friendliness by the person he wished to be closest with. With the night sounds resonating like an orchestra in his mind, he gathered his thoughts and headed home alone.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Shinah early next morning heard his phone buzzing like crazy, and so he sluggishly picked it up from his bedside table to check the notifications. He saw that the group chat with all his friends, 'The Dark Dragon and the Happy Hungry Bunch', was active and so he watched the messages flash up on the screen.
Zeno: Zeno wants to hang out again today!! :3
Hak: But we were together all day yesterday. Aren't we all tired of each other?
Yona: No! I love being with all of you all the time! ^_^
(Y/N): Well... I doooo need to study some more today. I'm falling behind ^^;
Kija: I told you this would happen! If only you had all listened to me in the first place!
Yun: No one listens to you on purpose
(Y/N): I'm gonna got to the library again today. Anyone wanna join me?
Kija: I'll join you, (Y/N)
Zeno: Yaay, Zeno too!!
Hak: Can't. Spending the day with Princess and her family.
Jeaha: Oh my, meeting the parents now, are we? ;)
Hak: Shut up, Droopy Eyes
Yun: I'm busy too. Soz (Y/N)
(Y/N): That's fine. Kija and Zeno, meet at the library at 12:30?
Zeno: Yup! Zeno will be there :D
Kija: I will see you then, (Y/N).
That same feeling from yesterday returned. (Y/N) was going to be with not only one of the other guys, but two this time. His fingers rested over the top of his phone's keyboard, wanting to type something like "I want to come, too." But he couldn't bring himself to do it. It was like his gut was holding him back from speaking up his feelings.
(Y/N): Great! It's a date then! :P
He sighed to himself and silenced his phone. He had never felt this way before, and so he had no reason to feel this way now. But it was as if a wind of change suddenly blew over him. He felt something scurrying up his back as he stood up, and little Ao plonked himself on his shoulder. Scratching his chin and giving him an acorn from a jar he kept beside his bed, Shinah began to talk to himself.
"I want... to be with her, too..." he said softly. The small creature looked up at him with beady eyes as he stuffed the acorn in his tiny little cheeks, tilting his head. Shinah gently put him down on his bed as he got ready for the day, deciding that he needed to clear his head of these unknown thoughts and feelings.
By chance, Shinah found himself walking past the library they were all at yesterday, and by chance he saw his three friends walking inside. Like his feet had their own goal he walked through the entrance, careful to keep his distance so he was not to be noticed. He saw all three find a place in a corner where there were several free tables for study, and began watching them from behind books on a bookshelf in front of him.
"I did History and Geography yesterday. So why don't we do maths?" Shinah heard (Y/N) ask.
"Alright. I need to work on my maths too, actually."
"Zeno's really good at maths!"
"Really? Do you think you could maybe help me then?" she timidly asked the playful yellow-head. Seeming very eager to give her a hand, (Y/N) showed him her textbook and one by one, he went through the questions step by step. At one moment, they accidentally touched hands and laughed at each other's awkwardness, despite already being best friends.
Shinah didn't like it. He wished that that could've been him helping (Y/N) study, just the two of them with no one else around to be disrupted by. Kija was in his own world focusing hard on what he had to do, but meanwhile Zeno and (Y/N) continued to muck around and have fun.
Unknowingly, he wished they weren't there in the first place.
And suddenly, he felt like he had completely transformed into something alien. A monster. He never thought to wish anyone away before; all he wanted in life was friends. And yet after he realised what he had begun to think to himself, he was shocked and at a loss for what he was meant to do then and there.
Concluding that this was indeed a bad idea, for his own sake, he left the library as silently as he could. He was good at that; being unnoticed. He thought that all changed when Yona invited him to be a part of their group, but now it felt as though nothing had changed in the first place. But before taking the next step to lead him outside, he stopped and clenched his fists... before running out as fast as he could.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
"So I have to expand the brackets, and then that becomes..."
"9x – 6 + 8 = 4x + 3"
"Right. And then I collect the like terms?"
"Uh huh! So that becomes-"
Suddenly a loud noise came from directly in front of the threesome, and saw Shinah plonking down stacks of books on the table in front of them. "Sh-Shinah! What're you doing here?" (Y/N) asked, surprised yet glad that another one of her friends had come to join her in her study session.
"Just... passing through." He sat himself down in the chair directly in front of (Y/N), and started reading through his own math textbook.
"Oh! You're studying algebra too?" Kija and Zeno continued to stare at Shinah, instantly picking up on his unusual behaviour only moments after he made his noisy entrance; quite the contrary to his quiet personality. Shinah himself, wasn't currently studying algebra in his maths class; (Y/N) and the others were all in different classes from him. But he didn't want her to have help from any of the others. He wanted to be the one sitting next to her right then and there, right where Zeno was sitting.
So he took it upon himself to learn what she was learning, too.
"Yeah..."
"Well then maybe we can help each other?"
"Sure..."
The atmosphere was tense with every response the blue-haired gave to every question. It wasn't until Kija and Zeno started helping each other, as well as (Y/N), that the air was easier to breath in. Shinah remained quiet, yet straining his ears to listen for the perfect moment.
"Hmm- what about this question-"
"What's the equation?" he very suddenly jumped in. Not expecting it, the three looked at him in a strange way.
"Uhh, it's (x2 - 16)(x - 3)2 + 9x2 = 0."
"Here... let me try." He reached out his hand to take her book, and started using his pencil to write down a step-by-step guide to solving the equation. In a mere ten seconds later, he handed the book back to her and studied her face carefully. She read through it with eyes of surprise, and checked the answer in the back of her book.
"Wow... you're right..! How did you do that so quickly!?"
"It's nothing..." he brushed off quickly, playing it cool. "I just wanted... to help."
"I had no idea you were so good at maths, too! Why is everyone so good at maths..." she pouted, being half serious at the same time.
"Zeno thinks you're good!"
"Don't worry, (Y/N). We'll just help you," Kija reassured like the too purely-hearted person he was.
"I want to help..." Shinah said quietly. "Me... only..." he said even quieter, but not quiet enough.
"Z-Zeno, I just remembered that, uhh, we need to-"
"There's a bug on your textbook, Kija~!" Instantly Kija vanished from the scene and Zeno was chasing after him, leaving the remaining two alone.
"That was... random..." She could hear the blood in her ears. He could look at his veins silently pumping blood. She could close her eyes and go into a dream. It was too silent for anyone's liking. "Shinah, you're acting a little bit... weird," (Y/N) finally cut the silence free.
He only remained silent, thinking about what his actions had lead him to do up to that point, what they had lead him to think about his own friends.
"Is something the matter...? You can always tell me, you know."
"No... I just..." he fearfully began, anxious about what she'd say. He stayed quiet, sinking down into his seat ever so slightly and his head low, covering his eyes.
"You're not... jealous, are you? You started acting differently since I brought up Jeaha yesterday."
It hit him, the word to his feelings he couldn't understand. He was relieved of a weight he felt on his heart from not knowing the unknown, but he was just as ashamed of himself and what his mind had begun etching into him.
"Come on, let's go somewhere else. We'll meet up with Kija and Zeno later..."
"Okay..."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Walking through the green painted, iron-wrought gates there was a concrete pathway stretching out in front of the two students like a grey ribbon winding through the green shrubbery. The beauty of the midday sun shone so brightly and scattered its warmth to those who urged to feel its comfort, and Shinah and (Y/N) stood underneath a strong-standing oak tree.
"Is everything alright, Shinah? Why are you acting like this?" (Y/N) started, wanting to know why her friend was far from himself.
"...I don't know. It just... happened."
"When?"
"Yesterday... when you were with Jeaha..."
"That soon?"
"I'm not sure why..."
"I think I know, Shinah..." He looked at her with searching eyes with such a deepness, it caught (Y/N) off guard slightly. "Do you think that maybe... you have feelings?"
"Feelings...?"
"For me..."
He wouldn't have known; he couldn't have known. The feeling was so unfamiliar, and it was alien to someone like him. Up until these people came into his life, his heart was void of emotion and meaning. He was lacking the sensation of how it felt to be this way towards another person. In that very moment, he wished he were Ao. He could've easily sat on (Y/N)'s shoulder, be given all the attention he wanted and get away with it all.
But what was there to get away with? His thoughts he had towards the people that accepted him for who he was? So much confusion clouded his mind in a thick fog, he couldn't see what was right in front of him nor see what he thought was true.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I haven't spent a lot of time with you, and I'm sure you feel as though we've been brushing you aside..."
"No... it's not that-"
"That's not what friends do. We should be including you in everything we do, and be making sure you feel part of this group. Because you're one of us now, you belong with us."
Shinah had no idea where this was coming from, and was expecting nothing more than questions about his unusual behaviour. "It's not your fault, though..." he tried to reassure.
"But it's not yours either." (Y/N) breathed heavily, as if to keep her emotions in check. She grabbed her hair with both of her hands and yanked on it a little. "But Shinah... you should've told me you wanted to spend more time with us. It's not fair that you feel like this."
It wasn't hard to tell that she was feeling hurt, but more for him than by. He tried telling her that it had nothing to do with her, but he was so quiet spoken that this had become a misunderstanding. Not sure how else he was to show his sincerity, he took baby steps towards her, and lightly hugged (Y/N) around her neck.
"I wanted to spend more time.... With you."
"M-Me? Just me? Why?"
"Because... I... You're a good person." She took a deep breath, relaxed, and slowly put her arms around his body as well. "And... I like you."
"You... like me?" Shinah felt his face get hotter, and he buried it deeper into her shoulder so she wouldn't see. (Y/N) felt it, and let out a barely audible giggle. She lifted her arms so they wrapped around his back, and she snuck in a small peck on his cheek. Feeling herself blush, she too buried her face in his chest.
Both a red hot blushing mess, they stood still for as long as they felt they need to. (Y/N) pulled away first, feeling like she couldn't make eye contact. "I-It's okay to feel jealous, Shinah. But next time, don't keep it to yourself."
O-Okay..." he said with a muffled voice in her shoulder. "Thank you... for liking me, too..."
"I've always liked you, you know..." Shinah pulled away with eyes larger, and sparks of joy enlightened his mystical stare. "But, I think I... like like you..."
"Me... too..." Butterflies' wings flapped to the beats of their hearts. They felt strong and easy to feel, like the cold touch of fragile glass in winter. Looking at his eyes, the ones she fell for so easily, (Y/N) was instantly reminded of the previous night where they both stood at the intersection alone. She specifically recalled that the night sky was much more beautiful than usual, as well as wishing that its everlasting beauty could be hers.
And now, it was.
