This is what always gets me about that scene!! He looks at her like he finally found someone else who understands how he feels about mother nature's dangerously beautiful creations. He sees her joy and is in awe at how much she's just like him in this way. Their shared level of insane passion for these natural phenomenons is something that can't be found in just anyone, after all. Tyler's team is wonderful and I love the Wranglers so much, but none of them share the level of obsession that Tyler has like Kate does. Throughout the movie its clear that they all share their parts in making content and helping people out, but when it comes to the storms? Most of it is on Tyler. Then Kate comes along and matches his freak and he can't help but be drawn to her. The first time they go stormchasing together is also the first time he's seen her love and passion for tornadoes up close in a more positive light (considering their first time experiencing one together was less than ideal lol and then there's the convo in the barn), and that man was so captivated by Kate being mesmerized by the storm. If there was any scene in the movie in which you could place exactly when he fell in love with her (because it's obvious that since the beginning he was interested and that he cared about her, but love specifically) it would be this. This scene in which he sees her, the person she is underneath the weight of the past she carries -- the woman and the little girl inside of her who's first love was the weather and built her entire life around understanding it -- and suddenly the perfect storm behind him doesn't matter so much as the realization that he'd follow her into any raging storm out there so long as she asks him to. Heck even if she didn't ask him, he'd be right there beside her.
no because tyler doesnât even look back at the tornado after he sees the pure joy on kateâs face?????? Iâm???????
thereâs a perfect cloud formation behind him (his words!) that he was just screaming his lungs out about, and all kate says is âitâs gorgeous!â and tyler turns away from the clouds and goes silent and watches her instead. all of this despite observing perfection (his. words.) in the sky moments before.
because kateâs radiating the very same joy and awe he feels. kateâs letting herself feel the thrill of the chase and the beauty of the storm again, and tylerâs entire world narrows to watching the beauty of the sky through her.
he doesnât even give the clouds a parting glance. he just chases her back to the truck.
like how. how did anyone leave this movie feeling normal about these two together. HOW.
#it has been MONTHS since this movie has been out and here i am still obsessed with them#like the press tour is over the hype had run its course but i cant bring myself to completely get over them omggg#i love these two insane and crazy weather loving hot nerds omg#kyte#tyler x kate#kate x tyler#tyler owens#kate carter#twisters

little mouse
Silco saved you in the bar a while ago. It was only fitting that you returned that favor.
content: SLIGHTLY suggestive toward the end, talk of weapons, sequel to 'the last drop', tagging a few of the people who asked for a p2, 1825 words
an: happy christmas to all who celebrate! hope you guys like this, enjoy!
â â â â â
"Hey, Mouse."
You stood up from your crouching position, placing a glass on the bar top. Sevika came in, a lit cigarette on the corner of her mouth as she let out a sigh, plopping down on one of the seats. Over the months, the two of you had became some sort of friends. Now, Sevika was a closed off person to begin with, not trusting you even one bit, but after seeing you work and defend your people, she warmed up to you. Ever since that one moment where you sneaked behind a man to steal back the bottle of booze that he had taken from the bar, she called you Mouse. Silent, but gets the job done.
"Rough day?"
The woman in front of you hummed, inhaling the smoke before turning her head, blowing it back out. Her favorite liquor was already set in a place where it was easy for you to grab. You dropped an ice cube into the glass, filling it up before pushing it her way. She thanked you, downing the entire thing as she groaned.
"Finn wants to meet with Silco today."
You raised an eyebrow, topping up her glass again before screwing the cap back on, placing it on the shelf right beside you. Some of the droplets that had spilled got neatly wiped up with your rag as you tossed it on the counter.
"What does Finn want with him?"
Sevika knew you didn't like the man either. It was something you bonded over. His exaggerated confidence annoyed the both of you, together with his lame attempts on trying to get Sevika on his side, and trying to get you in his bed. You knew not to fully piss the man off though. At least, not without Silco knowing first.
"Can trust you, can't I, Mouse?"
"Sevika," you sigh, "I quite literally cleaned blood off of the tables just so Silco wouldn't know that you beat that drunk guy up. Yes, you can."
She raised an eyebrow, the slightest smirk on her face as she sipped from her cup.
"Heard something about him wanting to overthrow Silco. Wants to be the most powerful Chembaron in Zaun."
It made you roll your eyes.
"He always bites off more than he can chew. He came to you?"
She hummed and nodded, swirling the ice cube in the glass. It made you chuckle as you glanced at the door, seeing the rest of the pub still empty.
"So he is still stupid enough to think you will betray Silco," you sighed, "Finn needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. Not only better for us, but also better for him."
"I just hope he stays away from here. I can't be here tonight - Silco has me out on a job."
You grimaced, squinting your eyes before pouring yourself a glass of water. Silco had told you that you could drink as long as you knew how to handle yourself, but you felt much more confident in being completely sober. You never knew what could happen, not in the Zaun now.
A week ago, Silco gifted you something. He said that it was because you were so good at your job, but little did you know the real reason. The man, though not doubting your skills or confidence, was⌠scared. With nothing but some glass bottles and a tea towel to defend yourself, he knew you needed something. Thieram had a gun, Sevika had her whole arm, so, for you, he found another weapon. A knife, small and thin, hidden away on your belt. You wouldn't even need to kill someone, no. That was not what he wanted. It simply gave him some peace of mind to know that if something were to happen, you would have something to defend yourself with.
"Thieram and I can keep an eye out," you winked, sipping your water, "Highly doubt you will miss anything."
The small clock next to you made you realize it was already later than you thought. Normally, Silco would have been downstairs right now, sipping a drink before the crowd would get big before disappearing into his office.
"Well, I will see you later, then. Time for Silco's drink."
"Hmm," Sevika threw her head back, gulping down the rest of her drink before wiping her mouth, "See you later, Mouse."
With a glass in one hand and the bottle in the other, you walked up the stairs, knocking on the door before you heard a 'come in'. Behind the door sat Silco, annoyed look on his face. On his desk laid a map and a lit cigar rested on the dish that Jinx had painted for him.
"Care for a drink?"
"Gladly," he groaned.
You quietly closed the door behind you, placing the gold-rimmed glass on his desk. Neither of you exchanged words, but it didn't feel necessary. The liquor splattered against the glass as you filled it up, closing the bottle again and stepping back.
"Expecting any guests?"
"Thankfully not."
"Well⌠If you need another drink, let me know."
He hummed in return, raising the glass to his lips as you left again. It seemed that in the few minutes that you were gone, the bar had filled up, and Thieram had arrived. He was busy making drinks as you greeted him with a smile, placing Silco's bottle back before pouring glasses.
Half an hour. That was how long you were able to just simply do your job. An odd character here and there trying to flirt with you before drunkenly walking off, drinks spilled, Thieram having to scold some idiots. You smiled at the woman in front of you as you handed her the drink, your gaze falling to the door behind her that opened and closed. In walked Finn, his golden jaw shimmering in the dim light. It made you raise an eyebrow - Silco wasn't expecting anyone today.
Instinctively, you looked to the booth to your left before remembering that Sevika wasn't here for the evening. But, what in the hell was Finn doing here? On his own, too. The man was nothing without at least one person by his side. You wiped the counter, your eyes following the figure as Finn walked up the stairs, disappearing from your sight.
"Thieram, I will be right back."
Your hand reached for Silco's bottle, the other one patting your hip to make sure that you had the knife with you. Maybe Finn was just there being harmless, but when has he not tried to pull some tricks? Worst case you have to pour both of them a drink. And so, after pushing yourself through the crowd, you sneaked up the stairs. No trace of Finn.
Stopping in front of the door, you paused. It was hard to hear if anything was being said as the crowd was rather loud, but you could hear the low humming of Silco's voice. Then, a louder voice, one dripping in forced confidence. You slowly opened the door, bottle held in your hands as if a weapon, before peeking in. There, Finn with a blade in his hand, standing right in front of Silco. Your boss must have been sitting down as you only saw his legs peek out from under the desk, but with Finn puffing his chest, it was hard to see anything.
Softly, you closed the door behind again, sneaking closer and closer.
"Today is the day you die, Silco."
You peeked past Finn's legs, seeing Silco sigh before putting his hand on his head. It seemed like neither men had noticed you. Finn tightened the grip on the blade, a sly smirk on his face.
"That's a risk I've known all my life."
With that, you jumped up, raising the bottle high above your head before smashing it down on Finn's cheek. He let out a surprised gasp as he stumbled to the floor, blood trickling down his eye as you slipped your knife out of the holster, holding it against Finn's neck.
"Day you die, Finn?"
Silco, who already had his hand on the holster of his pistol, looked at you confused, though he knew now was not the time. He cocked it, aiming it at Finn. The loud thuds and breaking glass seemed to catch quite some attention as Sevika burst in, metal arm nearly breaking off the door. She had just finished her job, wanting to let Silco know it was all done, stains still on her metal arm.
There, you on top of Finn with a knife to his throat, Silco with a gun aimed at the very same man, and a blade laying too far away for Finn to reach.
"Sevika, perfect moment," Silco pushed back his hair, his shoulders dropping before pointing to the man on the floor, "Surely you can take care of him?"
It seemed like all her dreams came true as she grinned. Oh, she can. She grabbed him by the neck as you stepped off of him, huffing as Sevika dragged him away. To where? You had no idea, but you did not doubt Sevika's skills.
"Well, well, well, little Mouse."
You averted your gaze back to Silco who only looked at you with what seemed to be an amused grin. He placed his gun back on his desk, one hand on his hip before gesturing.
"Quite a spectacle there. Care to explain?"
He moved one of the chairs back for you before sinking down on his own, taking a hit of his cigar. You sat on the chair in front of him, placing the blade right next to his pistol.
"I wasn't going to kill him. Don't think I could, no matter how annoying he is," you sighed, "I just⌠You said that there were no meetings today, and Finn showing up when Sevika wasn't supposed to be here seemed like much more than a mere coincidence. I didn't mean to come in without knocking, Silco."
"No," he tutted, "No apologies. I believe in loyalty more than a closed door, Mouse."
He swirled the ice around in his cup, looking at the broken glass and spilled liquor on the wooden floor.
"Such a shame we wasted this on an... idiot like Finn."
You snorted, shaking your head.
"Sorry. If it turned out he was here to make peace, then at least I could have poured you both a drink."
"You know, Mouse," Silco hummed, his fingers tracing the rim of the glass, "I never understood why you were called that. Mouse."
He placed emphasis on your nickname, glancing up at you.
"Sevika called you Mouse, and so did I. Surely there had to have been a reason for it. But now, I have seen it first hand," he nodded, "Didn't even see you sneak in. Finn surely didn't expect it."
You looked up at him, tilting your head.
"I can be quiet if I wish to."
"A handy skill indeed," hummed Silco, placing his glass on his desk, "Care to see how quiet we can be, little Mouse?"

"Unholy christmas" day 3/3
outbreak!Joel Miller x f!reader
Summary: After spending months wandering outside in the wild, you and Joel find safety inside the gates of Jackson just around christmas. A confession and a kiss lead to other things and you wake up wrapped around each other's arms.
wc: 4,5k
warnings: fluff, mentions of smut and no proofreading at all, sorry my head hurts.
a/n: welcome to the third and last day of my joel's fic christmas version event. This one didn't turn out as i planned but is still cute. (my personal favorite was merry christmas, please call me) thank you so much for being here and reading and I wish you all a merry christmas, i hope you all have a beautiful night either if you spend your night with other people or alone. happy reading and merry christmas đâĽď¸đ˛
You couldnât believe your eyes the first time you stepped inside Jackson. How the gates creaked open, or how the snow crunched beneath your boots as you and Joel made your way. A town in the middle of the hell you had faced felt almost surreal. After months of wandering through the wilderness, living on edge, Jackson felt like stepping into a dream, all decorated and bathed in warm lights, strings of Christmas decorations you thought you would never see again.
As you made your way inside, Joel glanced at you, his rugged features softening for just a moment when he took a glimpse of your awe expression. Something inside his heart felt at peace for the first time in months.
He had put you through so much during this time. Dragging you through the danger and fighting just to kept you both alive, and doing terrible things just for him to allow you to see another sunrise. He didnât regret the things he had done for keeping you safe, not for an instant, but when the weight of it all bore down on him. When you were sleeping clung to him at night and heâd lie awake, watching the firelight flicker against your face, wondering if you would be better off without him.
But what would it be of him without you?
Your existence overwhelmed him. In a way his heart would stop beating the second your gaze locked with his. In a way his breath caught up his throat when you held his hand or simple touch him when sleeping.
It terrified him how much you had become a part of him, how much he depended on the sound of your voice to lighten the weight on his shoulders, or how your simple presence was enough to silence the worst of his thoughts. His chest ached whenever your gaze locked with his, the world narrowing to just the two of you.
He felt alive and vulnerable all at once, and it scared him. But what scared him more was the idea of losing you.
Without you, the hollow emptiness he had spent years suppressing would swallow him whole. He had fought so hard to keep you alive since you gave him something to fight for.
And now, looking at you smiling at the big Christmas tree in the middle of Jackson, he felt whole.
He stayed rooted in place for a moment, his breath caught in his throat as he drank in the sight of you. How could someone like him, a man who had done unspeakable things, deserve to stand by your side? But he couldnât bring himself to pull away, not when you looked at the tree with the kind of joy he thought was lost forever.
âJoel?â Your voice broke his thoughts, soft and questioning as you turned to face him.
He cleared his throat and stepped closer, the snow crunching beneath his boots. âYeah? You okay?â
You nodded, a small, wistful smile tugging at your lips. âItâs beautiful, isnât it? I canât remember the last time I saw a Christmas tree.â
Joelâs gaze flicked to the tree for a moment before settling back on you. âYeah, it is.â
Joel opened his mouth to say more, but the sound of approaching footsteps on the snow made him pause, breaking the moment between the both of you. You both turned to see Tommy and Maria approaching, their faces lit with warm smiles.
âThere you two are,â Tommy said, his tone teasing. âFigured weâd find you here.â
Maria stepped forward, her eyes flicking between you and Joel. âWeâre heading over to the hall for dinner. Thought you might want to join us.â
You blinked in surprise, glancing at Joel before looking back at Maria. âDinner?â
âYeah,â Maria said with a nod, her smile widening. âThe community does it every year around Christmas. Everyone pitches inâfood, music, decorations. Itâs a nice way to celebrate together.â
Joel shifted beside you, his hands tucked deep in his jacket pockets. He glanced at you, silently asking what you wanted to do.
âThat sounds⌠nice,â you said after a moment, the idea of a communal dinner feeling strangely foreign after so long on the road. âWeâd love to join.â
Tommy clapped Joel on the back. âSee? Told you itâd be good for both of you to settle in a little.â
Joel grunted something under his breath, but his gaze softened as it lingered on you. âAll right,â he said. âLead the way.â
The walk to the community hall was short, the warm glow of lights spilling out through the windows guiding your way. Inside, the hall was alive with the buzz of conversation, the smell of roasted food, and the soft strum of a guitar from one corner.
As you followed Tommy and Maria to the community hall, the air around you felt festive, filled with laughter and the warm glow of lanterns strung along the path. The hall itself was bustling with life, long tables set up with trays of food and steaming mugs of cider. People greeted each other warmly, their voices blending into a symphony of holiday cheer.
You and Joel stepped inside, your eyes taking in the scene. For a moment, it was overwhelmingâthe sheer normalcy of it all after so many months of survival.
Maria nudged your arm gently, pulling you from your thoughts. âGrab some food and find a spot,â she said with a smile. âTommy and I will join you in a bit.â
You nodded, glancing at Joel, but he was already being pulled away by Tommy, who had clasped a hand on his shoulder and steered him toward a group of familiar faces.
âIâll catch up with you,â Joel muttered, throwing you a quick glance before disappearing into the crowd.
You made your way to the serving table, piling a plate with roasted vegetables and slices of bread before settling at a spot near the corner of the hall. From there, you could see Joel easily.
At first, it was endearing to watch him interact with Tommy. It reminded you of how hard he had fought to came here in order to be reunited with him all over again. And it was endearing, the sight of him, relaxed, the rare ghost of a smile playing on his lips. But as the minutes passed, your gaze lingered longer, drawn to the way people seemed to gravitate toward him.
Women. several of them.
They approached him with bright smiles displaying on their lips. Some were close to his age, others younger, their faces lighting up as they introduced themselves or leaned into a conversation with him. Joel, ever the gentleman he was, nodded politely, his deep voice lost in the noise of the room.
You knew Joel wasnât the type to encourage attention, but the sight of him surrounded by all these women, some of whom placed a hand on his arm or laughed a little too loudly at something he said, sent a nagging feeling creeping into your chest.
You had never had felt the feeling of sharing before, it has always been you and him.
Until now.
You tried to focus on your food, but your appetite had vanished. The hall, went from feeling warm and inviting, to feeling suffocating. You told yourself it was nothing, that Joel was just being polite, but the tightness in your chest didnât ease.
And you felt alone as if you were a burden Joel had to carry with him because he didnât have the heart to left you behind.
Your gaze dropped to the table, your fingers toying with the edge of your plate, but what did you expect? Joel had done so much for you, had carried you through hell, he had brought you to a safe place where you would be able to live a life again.
The nagging feeling twisted into something sharper, something you didnât want to name. You took a deep breath, trying to steady yourself, but your eyes drifted back to Joel, now leaning slightly as another woman spoke to him, her hand lingering just a second too long on his forearm.
You set your plate down, your appetite gone completely. For the first time since arriving in Jackson, you felt an urge to leave, to escape somewhere else.
The sight of Joel, so effortlessly blending in and laughing softly at something Tommy said, nodding politely as the women around him vied for his attention, made you feel like an outsider looking in.
And then it happened.
Joelâs gaze found yours across the room. His expression softened, a small, almost shy smile tugging at the corner of his lips. It was the kind of smile you rarely saw from him, one that seemed reserved just for you.
For a fleeting moment, the world quieted, the knot in your stomach loosening ever so slightly. But as your eyes scanned the room, taking in the familiarity shared between the townsfolks you felt it again. That foreignness. Like no matter how hard you tried, youâd never quite belong here.
Joel might. He was already starting to, even if he didnât realize it yet. The way people looked at him, sought his attention, told you he could find a place here, a life.
But you? You werenât so sure.
The thought settled heavily in your chest, and before you could overthink it, you pushed your chair back and stood.
You didnât look back as you walked out of the hall, the cold night air biting at your skin as soon as you stepped outside. The muffled sounds of laughter and conversation followed you briefly before fading as the door swung shut behind you.
The town was quiet, the snow under your boots crunching softly as you wandered aimlessly. The lights strung along the houses glowed warmly, but they only deepened the ache in your chest.
You stopped at the edge of the main street, your breath visible in the cold air. Wrapping your arms around yourself, you stared up at the sky, the stars barely visible against the glow of the town.
The crunch of snow beneath your boots was the only sound accompanying you as you wandered, drawn toward the faint glow of the Christmas tree in the center of town. It stood tall and proud, adorned with twinkling lights and ornaments that glittered like tiny stars.
As you reached it, you came to a stop, the cold biting through your coat, but you barely noticed. You gazed up at the tree, and a flood of memories washed over you, brief, fragmented flashes of a childhood long gone.
A living room dimly lit except for the glow of a tree like this one. Laughter, faint and warm, as presents were unwrapped. The scent of pine and the soft hum of a Christmas carol your mother used to hum under her breath.
You wrapped your arms tighter around yourself, a lump forming in your throat. That world felt like it belonged to another life, to someone else entirely. The woman standing here now, hardened by years of survival, couldnât reconcile with the girl who once giggled over snow angels and stockings by the fireplace.
Joel stepped outside, the cold air biting at his skin as he scanned the bustling streets of Jackson. It wasnât like him to let things go unsaid, especially not when it came to you. Heâd noticed the way you pulled away, your silence heavier than usual. He could feel the weight of it, pulling at him, gnawing at him.
You inhaled deeply, your breath shaky as it clouded in the cold air. This was why you felt out of place here. Jackson was built on hope, on community, on remnants of a world you werenât sure if you were going to fit into.
Heâd watched you slip away from the warmth of the hall, your figure disappearing into the night. Without a second thought, he followed. He couldnât let you disappear into the night like that, not when something was so clearly eating at you.
The snow crunched beneath his boots as he made his way toward the glow of the Christmas tree. The town was quieter now, the hum of conversation and laughter fading as he walked through the streets, searching for you.
He found you standing under the towering tree, your face lit by the soft, flickering lights. His heart skipped a beat at the sight of you, so small against the backdrop of the glowing tree, lost in thought. Your gaze was fixed on the ornaments, the lights reflecting in your eyes, and for a moment, he just watched you.
His chest tightened, and he swallowed the lump that formed in his throat. He couldnât stand to see you like this, so distant, so detached from the world around you. It was like you were still trapped in the past, somewhere far away from here, far away from the safety of Jackson and everything it had to offer.
âHey,â he finally called out, his voice low but steady.
The sound of Joelâs voice startled you, low and rough but unmistakable. You turned to find him standing a few feet away, his broad frame silhouetted against the glow of the Christmas lights. He was breathing hard, like heâd been searching for you.
âI wondered where you ran off to,â he said softly, his eyes scanning your face.
âI just needed some air,â you replied, your voice quiet.
He stepped closer, his boots crunching in the snow, until he was standing beside you. His gaze flicked to the tree for a moment before settling back on you.
He stepped closer, his boots crunching in the snow, until he was standing beside you. His gaze flicked to the tree for a moment before settling back on you. âDidnât mean to leave you alone thereâ
âDonât worry.â you said quickly, but even to your own ears, the words felt hollow.
Joel's brow furrowed slightly, sensing the distance in your voice. He could see it in your eyes, the same unease, the same weight that had been there all night. Something was pulling at you, and he could feel the space growing between you both, even as you stood so close.
âI know you donât like crowds,â he said, his voice softer now, as if trying to tread carefully around your thoughts. "But you don't have to be alone, not here."
You swallowed hard, the lump in your throat refusing to go away. "I just... need to figure things out."
Joel turned his body to face you more fully, his expression open but intense. He wasnât going to let you pull away from him, not now. He reached out, gently brushing his fingers along your arm, his touch warm against the chill of the evening.
"Hey," he said, his voice steady. âWhatâs wrong?â
âIâve been thinking,â you said, your voice barely above a whisper.
His brow furrowed. âAbout what?â
You hesitated, glancing back at the tree. âAbout us. About how maybe itâs time for me to⌠move on. Find my own place here. I donât want to be a burden to you anymore, Joel. Youâve done so much for me already-â
His jaw tightened, and before you could finish, he cut you off. âStop.â
You blinked, startled by the firmness in his voice.
"I think itâs time we go our separate ways," you said softly.
Joel froze, the words slicing through the cold air. "What?"
You looked down, unable to meet his gaze. "Iâve been thinking about it for a while. Youâve done so much for me, Joel. You got me out of the QZ, kept me alive out there...but I know Iâm just a burden. You donât have to keep looking out for me. Tommy can find me another place."
He stared at you, stunned. "You think Iâm tired of you?"
You nodded, your voice barely above a whisper. "Arenât you?"
Joel closed the distance between you in two strides, his hands gripping your arms gently, but firmly enough to make you look at him. "No," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "I ainât tired of you. Not even close."
You blinked, caught off guard by the intensity in his tone. "Joel, I just donât want you to feel like-"
"Like what?" he interrupted, his jaw tightening. "Like youâre something I have to put up with? You arenât. Youâre the one thing that makes this goddamn world a little easier to stand. Donât you dare think Iâd ever want you gone."
Your breath hitched, his words sinking in. The way he was looking at you, like you were the only thing that mattered in his life, made your heart ache.
"Joel?" you asked, your voice trembling. "Why would you want me to stay? I donât⌠I donât bring anything to the table."
He exhaled sharply, his thumb brushing over your sleeve. "You bring more than youâll ever know. You keep me sane, keep me fighting. Youâre the only thing in my life that feels right."
The lights from the Christmas tree flickered behind you, casting soft patterns across his face as his voice softened. "I need you, baby. And if you ever think about leaving again, you tell me first. Iâll set you straight."
You let out a shaky laugh. "You really mean that?"
Joelâs lips twitched into a faint, crooked smile. "Damn right, I mean it."
Before you could overthink it, you leaned into him, wrapping your arms around his torso. He held you close, his chin resting lightly against the top of your head.
Joel pulled back just enough to look down at you, his hands still resting on your arms. His eyes softened, a quiet intensity behind them that made your heart skip. The flickering glow of the Christmas lights reflected in his gaze, but it was the warmth in them that held you still.
He tilted his head, his voice barely above a whisper. "Youâre not going anywhere."
Before you could reply, he leaned in, his lips brushing against yours as if asking for permission at first, as if testing the waters. The world seemed to stand still as his hand moved to cup your cheek, his thumb gently grazing your skin.
The kiss deepened, slow and unhurried, carrying a quiet desperation that told you everything he couldnât put into words. He was telling you that you were his world, that you were his, that he needed you as much as you needed him.
When he finally pulled back, his gaze lock with yours, his breath mingling with the cold night air. His voice was rough, almost a whisper. "You understand now? I donât just want you here. I need you here. With me. We are a team."
Tears pricked at your eyes, but you smiled, your hands resting against his chest. "Okay, I promise I wonât go away from you.â
He closed his eyes briefly, relief washing over his face, before pressing another kiss to your forehead. Then, he went all over for your lips again, this time deeper, as if he wanted to imprint this moment on his heart forever. His hand slid from your cheek to the back of your neck, drawing you closer, while his other arm wrapped securely around your waist.
You melted into him, your fingers clutching his jacket as if to anchor yourself to the only steady thing in your chaotic world. The cold air nipped at your skin, but you barely noticed, lost in the warmth of his skin, of his presence, on the way his lips moved against yours, the way he held you like he never wanted to let go.
When the kiss broke, you both stayed close, breaths mingling in the frosty air. His thumb brushed your cheek, his gaze soft yet unreadable.
âCome on,â he murmured, his voice low and warm, âletâs get you back inside before you freeze.â
You nodded, but your hand found his, intertwining your fingers as he led you to the house. The walk was silent, but the tension between you was electric.
Inside the house, the fire burned the room dimly lit by the soft orange glow of the embers between the both of you. Joel shut the door behind you, his eyes lingering on you as you removed your coat. There was no space for words now, just the unspoken language that pull you back to him.
He crossed the room in two strides, his hands finding your waist, his lips meeting yours again with a quiet urgency. You let him guide you toward the bed, his touches careful, his gaze searching yours for permission every step of the way.
You gave it to him, silently, your hands slipping under his shirt, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath your fingertips that almost felt like they burn, his breath hitched, but he didnât stop, he couldnât. Not when you were looking at him with those puppy eyes that made him feel like he was your biggest treasure.
That night, the world outside didnât exist anymore. It was just you and Joel, tangled together beneath the blankets, your mingled warmth chasing away the cold. Every touch, every kiss, every whisper of his name felt like a promise you didn't dare break.
Later that night, the room was dim, only the crackling of the fire providing light. You could feel his breath on your skin, slow and deliberate, as if he was savoring the taste of you, every moment with you leaded to this and his hands moved with a gentleness that surprised you, as if he was treating you like something fragile, precious he has promised himself he would protect.
But there was nothing fragile about the way you felt. With him, there was strength, a connection that ran deeper than anything you could put into words. You felt it in the way he held you, in the way his body responded to yours. It was raw, but it was also tender, and that combination left you breathless.
You pulled him closer, your fingers tracing the lines of his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath your touch. You wanted to show him how much he meant to you; how much you needed him in this moment.
Joelâs lips found yours again, but this time, the kiss was slower, more conscious. It was a silent plea, an exchange of everything you couldnât say aloud. You didnât need words. You had each other, and that was all that mattered.
When he finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against yours, his breath coming in short, soft bursts. âYou okay?â he asked, his voice low and rough, a faint hint of concern threading through his words.
You nodded, your hands slipping into his hair, tugging him back down to you. âIâm more than okay,â you whispered, taking his lips on yours again.
But Joelâs voice broke the kiss as he pulled away slightly, his hands lingering on your hips before he stood, turning toward the small table in the corner of the room. âI, uh... I got you something for Christmas,â he said, his voice rougher than usual, but there was something softer behind it.
You blinked, surprised. Christmas hadnât really felt like Christmas since the outbreak, and you hadnât expected anything, certainly not from him. As he turned his back to you, his broad shoulders and his muscles in his bare back caught your attention. He was a picture of raw strength, but in that moment, you saw something else in him, vulnerability, tenderness, and a depth of care you hadnât expected from the man who had carried so much loss during his life.
Your chest tightened as a strange, overwhelming sense of clarity washed over you. It was like everything had all led to this. To this moment, with him. You didnât need anything else. You didnât need a world full of certainty or things that made sense. With Joel, every simply made sense.
He reached for something on the table, a small wrapped box that was too carefully wrapped. His fingers lingered on the edges of the paper before he turned back toward you. His expression was unreadable, though there was a small, almost shy smile on his lips.
He stepped toward you, the firelight casting a warm glow on his face, illuminating the lines and scars on his temple. When he stopped in front of you, he held the gift out, his eyes meeting yours, softly âIt ainât much,â he muttered, âbut I thought... I thought you deserved it. I got a while ago but since weâre here and we can celebrate Christmas again, I feel like I can give It to you.â
You took the small box from his hands, feeling the weight of it in your palm. Your heart skipped a beat as you met his eyes, seeing the love in them, the thought behind his gesture. It was so simple, so genuine, that it took your breath away.
You slowly unwrapped the box, your hands trembling just slightly as the soft paper fell away. Inside was a delicate silver necklace, the pendant a small, simple heart with intricate engravings along its edges. It caught the firelight, glimmering softly, and something inside you fluttered as you held it in your palm.
Joel watched you, his gaze soft but intense. He seemed to be holding his breath, waiting for your reaction. You could tell it meant something to him, something more than just the gift itself.
You swallowed hard, trying to keep the emotions from flooding your voice. âJoel...â you whispered, your fingers tracing the edges of the pendant. âItâs beautiful.â
His face softened, the corners of his mouth curling into a quiet smile. âI saw it a while ago,â he said, his voice low, almost uncertain. âThought you might like it. And... I didnât know when the right time was, but I guess now felt right. This... this is for you to carry me with yoy everywhere you go.â
You felt the warmth of his words seep into you, settling in your chest as your heart pounded. This wasnât just a piece of jewelry; it was a symbol of the quiet love he had for you, the love that had been building ever since you had met in the ruins of the world.
Your eyes lifted from the necklace to his, you cupped his jaw, feeling his breath catch as your lips met his again, soft at first, but deepening as the world around you seemed once more. It was just the two of you, lost in each other, breathing each other in.
When you finally pulled away, you rested your forehead against his, your chest heaving with the emotions swirling inside you. âI didnât get you anything,â you murmured, the guilt creeping into your voice.
Joelâs hand brushed through your hair; the soft gesture meant to comfort you. His eyes met yours, the warmth in them determined. âItâs okay,â he said, his voice low, steady. âYouâre here. Thatâs all I need.â
You couldnât help the small smile that tugged at your lips, but then he leaned in, his voice softer this time, laced with something tender. âBut, uh... Can I call you love?â
His question caught you by surprise, but it also made your heart skip. The simple, honest sincerity in his eyes made your chest ache with affection.
âLove?â you echoed, testing the word in your lips. It felt strange and foreign, but in his presence, it felt like the most natural thing in the world.
He nodded, his gaze earnest. âYeah. If thatâs alright. That would be a gift for me, for nowâ he clarified, smiling at you.
You felt the warmth of his words wrap around you, making your heart flutter with a mix of emotions. The sincerity in his eyes made the world feel smaller, like everything was finally making sense.
âYes,â you whispered, your voice barely audible as you gazed up at him. âYou can call me love.â
A smile stretched across Joel's face, his eyes softening with joy. He leaned in again, this time his lips capturing yours with a tenderness that made everything feel right. The kiss was deep, filled with the promise yet to be written, and as you pulled away, your heart ached with a love that had been growing between you, unspoken, until now.
Joel gently guided you back onto the bed, his hands roaming over your body with a careful urgency. You felt his warmth radiating from his body as he settled beside you, his chest rising and falling with each breath. The room was silent except for the crackling of the fire, but in that silence, everything spoke.
You pressed your cheek to his chest, your hand splayed across the warmth of his skin, feeling his heartbeat beneath your fingertips. It was a beating you could now call yours, a melody that you caused.
âMerry Christmas to me, then, I guess,â he murmured, his voice thick with affection as he pulled you closer. His body felt like a shield, protecting you from everything that had ever threatened to tear you down.
You smiled, nestling into him even more, your own fingers tracing patterns along his skin. âMerry Christmas, baby.â you whispered back, feeling more alive, more complete than you had in years.
In the quiet darkness of the room, wrapped in his arms, with the world outside frozen in time, you knew this was where you were meant to be.
And that was enough. The world could wait. Tonight, it was just the two of you.

Okay, let's unpack this response here
TL;DR: 'weak and surface' level is exactly how I would describe prevs "obliteration". I'm not convinced THEY read the books. Or maybe they're just another TERF, considering that's how it reads. I completely disagree with Harry naming his kid after Snape. The ONLY explanation I can think for it is that JKR has no idea what love is (which is also cannon, as far as I'm concerned)
First: idk what book this person read, but Snape's obsession with Lily was creepy to the extreme. That their friendship started by him all but stalking her and Petunia should have been red flag #1. I mean, sure, he was a traumatized kid without friends, but that doesn't absolve him of his continued obsession. He literally stood outside the Gryffindor common room, refusing to leave, until she came out to talk.
And yeah, he did switch sides out of guilt. But he canonically didn't give a damn about Harry. If he was actually trying to protect the kid, he would have done more than bully and abuse (occlumency lessons anyone?) the kid. Teaching at Hogwarts was never about redemption. It was about staying out of Azkaban. (And Dumbledore's manipulation, but he's a whole 'nother can of worms)
Second: the books actually say that Snape was 'up to his nose in the dark arts'. He was an active participant. He didn't just 'hang out' with to-be-DE, he WAS one. He joined up of his own free will. He became Voldemort's RIGHT HAND. He didn't regret calling someone a mudbl***. He regretted that it was Lily.
And Snape CANONICALLY attacked the marauders just as much as they went after him. Just because they went after him first in that ONE memory, doesn't mean he didn't instigate too.
And let's talk about the werewolf incident for a minute because i am sick and tired of Snape Apologists using this as an excuse. That was NOT planned. That was a lapse of judgement on Sirius' part alone (yeah, fucked to hell and he is fully responsible for that). At the same time though, NO ONE MADE HIM GO. Snape was given a vague instruction and he was so focused on 'getting back' at the marauders that he put HIMSELF in danger. That is just as much on him as it is on Sirius.
Then the sexual assault? This is another common thing I see and it took me forever to figure out what it was even referring to. The pantsing? You cannot tell me he was the only one that happened to. If the levitating spell was really as popular as it's stated, this incident wasn't special. I'm willing to bet Snape did it to others too.
Third: Lupin not taking the wolfsbane. Yes, serious lapse in judgement. He also just saw Peter and Sirius on the map. The argument of it being criminal and a ticking time bomb is honestly werewolf prejudice and exactly why Remus has such a hard time finding a job in the first place. Way to go. You've discovered discrimination.
Fourth: Get McGonagall's name out of your fucking mouth. She is CANONICALLY shown NOT showing prejudice and treating EVERYONE by the same standards. And, did you forget that 'Moody' here was actually a death eater in disguise? No duh he's using cruel and unusual punishments??? Full of abusive teachers my ass.
Fifth: What do you mean the kids weren't scared for life? I do believe those CHILDREN will carry that trauma with them for the rest of their lives. Saying that it didn't break them is cruel and completely dismisses the VERY REAL pain and suffering that they went through. They are real heroes because they OVERCAME their trials. Not all of us out here in the real world are so lucky.
Lastly: yes, comparing CHILDREN who DID see the error of their ways to an ADULT who had to be CONNED into doing the right thing is laughable.
And saying Regulus accomplished nothing? Disgraceful. Of course it took a catalyst for him to change his ways thats how redemption arcs work.
If you made it this far, I hope you have a good day. Believe whatever you want, obvy I'm not going to change anyone's opinion. You can't MAKE a person understand. Still, it's nice to rant and remind myself how nice it is that I live in my own little corner of the fandom where I don't have to see this bullshit on my dash
okay, hold my drink *hands u cursed ancient goblet full of mead* i gotta talk my shit for a second.
ive been seeing a lot of severus snape love recently. and this is fine, obviously, y'all can love whomever you want. but. i need to rant or i will explode. if we're talking about canon. severus snape spends his adult years, seven books of it in fact, abusing children. and his excuse for this is the girl he loved (tho not enough not to join a group actively trying to exterminate her) fell for the hot jock instead of him (a tragedy indeed, i weep 4 him, i really do). and also she died, which, admittedly is very sad.
it is simply crazy 2 me 2 look at that and think *romance* or *genuine care and affection*. LIKE. fo real. snape calls her a slur in public, apologizes in private, hangs out with dudes who commit hate crimes against her friends (CANONICALLY, she says "you've been hanging out with that douchebag Mulciber, how could you do that after what he did to Mary???" this is not a direct quote but like, it's close enough). lame. loser behaviour.
"Oh but what about regulus" i can hear you say "he loves James potter but snape doesn't love lily???" well. idk. maybe. bit different tho, innit? due to james not being the demographic regulus is attacking (which doesn't make regulus a better person but does make the dynamic between him and james different). ALSO. Regulus chooses to turn against voldemort without hope for anything in return. snape doesn't seem to give a shit about voldemort, he's just sad he's not gonna get to bang lily evans. he switches sides for that reason alone. also doesn't care about what happens to her husband or her son which like. considering lily would be pretty fucking destroyed if they died. once again points to my whole, he doesn't really give a shit about her, theory. lame. loser. behaviour.
also. im sorry. I"M SORRY. but what snape does to neville? to hermione? to harry? gross. a grown ass man out here telling an eleven year old neville he's worthless or hermione she's ugly and annoying. or spilling harry's potion and refusing to grade him for it???????????????
reg and draco are children when we see them at peak suckage and therefore they feel like they can be redeemed much more compellingly (CAN be, not SHOULD be, not HAVE to be, just narratively i think they are easier to turn into interesting, sympathetic characters). but snape? snape grows up into a garbage adult. like he doesn't get better. and again, the only real excuse we're given is his obsession with lily. not very demure. not very cutesy.
ALSO. yall remember that time he got a destitute, struggling Remus Lupin fired from the best job he ever had just because he felt like it? remember that time snape weaponized Remus's lycanthropy and people's prejudice against him just cause. like. literally just cause??? his ego was bruised after the shrieking shack incident so he was like "get wrecked Lupin I'm going to tell everyone your secret so you will be forced back out onto the streets" DO YALL REMEMBER THAT BITCH ASS MOVE????????? THAT HE DID AS A FULL ADULT.
IN CONCLUSION, this is silly and, of course, like i said at the start, everyone can have their own thoughts and feelings about characters, but i simply needed to interject here on behalf of snape haters everywhere because i feel like so much of snape's shitty behaviour as an adult during a time when he was really under no duress and was very safe and cozy, is ignored. and my hater heart just cannot let that stand.

What about Wade going to a different timelime requested by the TVA years after the Time Ripper. They told him the X-men and the anchor being of that universe were in danger and he needed to make sure they survived and he got rid of the problem for good.
So Wade goes alone to avoid his babygirl having to face the alternative versions of his dead team. He gets to the X mansion and explains them the situation, tells them he is Deadpool, a mercenary sent by a time organization to save them all and they believe him.
Everything was going surprisingly well until, well, it wasn't. And how could he have not thought to ask who the anchor being of that universe was? How could he not notice the absence of a very important person there? He is still surprised (after years of not seeing that amount of rage directed at him from his Logan) to see a younger Logan get to the mansion baring his teeth at him, unseathing his claws and preparing to pounce, seeing him as a threat.
And when he does he tries everything in his power not to hurt him, evading the punches, claws, and 300 pounds of feral Wolverine and not attacking him even once. Eventually, Logan stops confused about the man's playful attitude and the voices of the X-men asking him to calm down. When he asks Wade suspiciously 'why didn't you fight back bub?', Wade just laughs and answers in a tone so soft and sweet and foreign to him 'Well, if this had happened years ago I would have indulged in some fun, I always loved taming a feral Wolvie but I can't bear to hurt an alternative version of my husband now'.
Everything got so quiet he could have heard a pin drop but Wade was solely focused on Logan, watching the similarities to the love of his life who now had some more wrinkles around his eyes and cheeks, a soft healthy body, hair almost fully gray and a sweet smile almost all of the time around him, Laura, their friends, their family. Compared to this Logan who still looked so tense, wary, ready to run.
He stays with them for weeks waiting for the attackers to get there while spending time with this version of Logan. And as the time passes the man understands why other version of him would be head over heels for the mercenary, yeah the man is so damn weird and loud and fucking annoying at times but he has never found someone who could understand him and make him feel the way he does. He starts yearning, for a person, a place he will never have cause it already belongs to someone else and he dreads the moment Wade will leave and not come back ever again. And the X-men notice it, bewildered by Logan's behavior around Deadpool, how he seems to follow his lead as naturally as breathing, how they seem to get what the other is thinking or feeling just by seeing each other and they realize Logan has never been fully theirs cause he is just waiting for someone else to bring him home.
Inevitably when the time comes, and Dealpool saves them, he doesn't even have time to react and say goodbye to the merc cause a weird orange portal opens in the middle of the war field and a blue and yellow suited hand appears through it yanking Wade away, and Logan recognizes a voice so similar to his saying 'you've taken too long Mouth, our daughter's birthday is next week, and we all miss you at home'.
Logan knows all his life he's just been a stray longing for a place to settle but at least now he can hope there is a loud mouth, sarcastic, pretty, and soft mercenary with no filter waiting for him somewhere in his world to take him home.
I apologize for any mistake, I'm not a writer and English is not my first language but I just can't get enough of these men and any of their versions being soft with each other.

Method Man & Mary J. Bligeâ"All I Need"
Terry Richmond couldn't stop looking at the eight by eleven color photo he recieved in the mail.
Terrina Richmond.
He had a daughter. A two-month-old baby girl.
His mind raced with so many chaotic thoughts. He'd had an affair with a married woman and she left him to salvage her wreck of a marriage in South Carolina. Terry spent months trying to forget her, poured himself into his work, and blotted out the memory of Nova Patterson.
The last time they made love, he nearly broke the bed, pulling out his best erotic moves to keep her. By his calculations, that was when he impregnated her. They loved each other, but ultimately, he had to let her go. She belonged to someone else and already had an infant son. Who was he to prevent a reconciliation of a family?
He worked day and night, taking on extra hours, even requested deployment overseas to get away from Nova haunting him with her beauty, kindness, and intelligence. He wished the world for her, but couldn't bear to be in the states knowing he couldn't have her.
The big bosses denied his request. They wanted his skills building up their elite soldiers in Oceanside. Make more war machines. Oorah.
Terry booked a flight to Charleston the moment he hung up the phone with Nova. An hour later he still sat on his couch wondering who to confess his shocking news to. His first inclination was to reach out to his family, but he wasn't ready to explain the circumstances of fathering a child with a married woman to his parents just yet. His closest friends Von and Bethany were next in line, but he could already hear Bethany chewing him out for being no different than Jordan, with Von nodding his head in agreement. Telling his homegirl Angie would only result in a flying fist socking him in the jaw.
He had accrued ninety days of leave time that he planned on using up for Nova and Terrina. His godson Junior, too. He stroked his chin. Junior would become his stepson now. A bonus child. Nova gave him purpose. He had a family to care for.
Terry cancelled his flight.
Nova would have a ton of things to bring back with the children. He would drive there instead of flying and rent a U-Haul cargo trailer in Charleston. Nova could take what she wanted and he would buy anything else she needed once they returned to Oceanside. He glanced around his condo. They could stay in his place until the lease ended the following summer and then look for a new home big enough for the four of them.
Four.
How strange. He woke up that morning a single man living a solitary life. Now he was responsible for three other people. He wanted to marry Nova as soon as possible, that way he could get them on his health insurance. Terry grinned. He moved like a man with a plan.
Packing more clothes for an extended trip, the reality sank in further. He was a father. He stopped to look at his daughter again. She had his ears. Funny how he hadn't noticed it before. Terrina's eyes struck him first, but then all the other little details jumped out. She was his mama's color. Terry got his eyes from his maternal grandmamma and his ears from his paternal grandpa. Terrina repped both sides of his family like him. He sat down on his bed and rocked his body, staring at her picture like it was going to disappear if he stopped looking at her.
That was his baby girl.
Nova carried her while enduring the stress of an unraveling marriage. His woman needed peace and a home fit for a queen. He was determined to give it to her. Texting his parents, he sent them a quick message that he had to postpone coming to Louisiana because of work.
He stopped by his local coffee shop and loaded up on an egg white breakfast sandwich and coffee. Hitting the road by noon, he headed east after texting Nova that he was driving and would arrive in Charleston within two days. She sent him another picture of Terrina and Junior. He smiled so hard in his truck after taking a restroom break. Junior was nearly two years old, and it shocked Terry that he didn't look like Jordan anymore. The boy had Nova's face dipped in milk chocolate. He noticed that she'd typed the names Terrina and Novan. He typed the name Novan with a question mark. A minute later, she sent a message that she legally changed her son's name to hers. His nickname was Van-Van. Yeah, she was really done with Jordan if she yanked his son's name away from him. That shit was tough.
"My baby girl will never have that problem," he muttered, heading onto the freeway again.
Terry drove non-stop, only taking breaks when the truck needed gas. He loaded up with a bunch of Big Macs from McDonald's in Dallas, and his heart started beating wildly. Sitting in the parking lot, he inhaled deeply several times and listened to one of his meditation apps. On the verge of a panic attack unless he spoke to someone about his sudden anxiety at meeting his daughter, he called Bethany and confessed everything.
"I'm sitting here freaking out, Bethany. I just want to get to South Carolina and see NovaâŚhold my baby, but right now I'm losing it. Cuss me out, yell at me, I don't careâŚI just needed to talk to someone I trusted who knows meâŚknows I wouldn't do anything to hurt anyone on purpose. Not even Jordan."
Bethany gave a long sigh. He waited for a shrill tone to rip his ear apart.
"Terry, I have to be honest with you. Nova called and told me everything a month ago."
"She what? A month ago?"
"Don't be upset. She was scared and didn't have anyone supporting her. Her family flipped outâŚJordan's family flipped. Jordan is on a downward spiral. It's a shitshow out thereâŚbut I promised her I wouldn't say anything until she was ready to face you. Go easy on her, okay?"
"I'm glad she has you," he finally said after a long pause.
"You should be glad to have me, too. I should kick your butt, though."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you anything about herâŚand me."
"Didn't have to. I already knew something was up. I just hoped you two would've ended it quietly without all this blowback. You make a pretty baby, though. She looks just like you and your mom."
"I'm nervous BethanyâŚa little scared. I'm thrilled to have TerrinaâŚit's justâŚI'm halfway across the country ready to uproot Nova from her hometown. Am I doing the right thing for her and the baby? I meanâŚshe has JuniorâŚVan-Van. Can I take him away from his father like this?"
"She reached out and wants you to come for her. That's all you need to concern yourself with. I'll let her tell you herself what's been going on, but that is your family now. Jordan should be an afterthought in your mind."
"I want to marry her."
"Get her out of Charleston first. Text me when you get there."
"Does Von know?"
"No. This is something he needs to hear from you when you get back."
"Thank you for being thereâŚfor the both of us."
"You have a darling little two-month-old who needs her daddy. Drive safe, Terry. Love you."
Terry sat in the truck, feeling better. Bethany didn't hate him. He texted Nova despite the late hour in her time-zone.
He started the truck and drove closer to his love.
Terry sat in a parking lot of a Target store in a town just outside of Charleston on Sunday morning. He wanted to buy gifts for Nova and the baby, but the store didn't open until seven. The weather was already hot, and he rolled the windows down to wait three hours. He contemplated waiting at a Jack in the Box parking lot, but there were two cop cars there and the last thing he wanted was to attract the attention of the police outside of a fast-food joint at four in the morning.
He spent time on his smartphone looking up all the things he had to do legally to establish paternity. DNA test. Filing the results with the court. It would probably be a hassle to take Jordan's name off the birth certificate, but Terry would spend whatever money it took to pay all court fees to do so. He'd need to get a lawyer in Charleston to navigate everything.
The store opened, and he grabbed a cart, rolling it to the children's section. There was no sales associate around to ask about sizes, so he looked at infant clothing that claimed to fit newborns up to two months. He bought a fancy box of chocolate for Nova's grandmother who she stayed with after leaving her brother's home. Flowers for Nova. Baby balloons. A clunky-looking Captain America action figure for Van-Van. It took him a minute to find the Black one. Sam Wilson. It was going to be all Black everything in their household. Terry paused in the toy section. He imagined his life being like Von and Bethany's, raising two children and being happy. Von always went home to a happy wife and happy children. Sending up a prayer to God, he wanted to provide the same life for Nova and his new family.
He paid for everything at check-out and rolled his cart out to the truck. Bethany was right about Target. You can't ever go inside and come out with the one thing you went in for. He spent over two hundred dollars on all kinds of toys for his daughter and bonus son.
Terry smelled like long hours on the road and stopped at a cafĂŠ to purchase a blueberry muffin that gave him access to the restroom. He washed up, brushed his teeth, and changed into fresh clothes he carried in a backpack. By the time he hit the road again, he was ready to face his future. Following the directions on his GPS, he admired the old buildings and the slow pace of Charleston's southern charm. That went out the window when a palmetto bug flew into the truck. A goddamn flying roach. Hell nah!
He rolled up his windows and put on the air conditioner. The directions showed that he still had an hour to reach Edisto Island. He leaned into the steering wheel once he started crossing the McKinley-Washington Bridge that led to Nova. The Dawhoo River below him looked like mysterious black water. The tannins seeping out of decaying trees turned the water a dark tea-color. Nova once explained that the word "Edisto" meant "black" and was also the name of the indigenous people who lived there, including her Gullah kin, from way back.
His heart palpitated, and he started breathing faster when he reached the street where Mrs. Mariam Walker, the matriarch of Nova's family lived. He smelled the heavy scent of the sea and the river. The house was only a few blocks away from Edisto Beach. Everything around him had been built by Gullah hands. Homes. The bridge. Docks. Churches. Everything.
He passed Mrs. Walker's house because there was no parking available on both sides of the street. Making a U-Turn, he found a spot where a driver left in a brown van. He glanced over at the large white house with the double stairs leading to another stairway that led up to a semi-wrap-around porch. Several older Black men and a couple of men Terry's age stood on the porch looking his way. They built the old house high to avoid flooding, and it seemed like it should've been on a heritage museum tour. He typed into his phone.
I'M HERE.
He put on a stoic expression to face Nova's male relatives. They probably weren't thrilled to see him approaching the house.
The front door flew open and Nova dashed out. She ran down the top stairs first and waited on the landing, her eyes searching the street. When she fixed her gaze on him, she covered her mouth and jumped up twice before running down the left set of stairs, hurtling forward like a comet to greet him. He moved so fast people could've sworn he had wings on his feet like Mercury.
"Terry!" she cried out.
A bunch of women exited the house to watch them.
The moment Nova reached him, he lifted her up high. She hugged his neck so tight that she almost cut off his circulation. He set her down, and they held each other. Embracing her was like having a missing puzzle piece slipped back into its proper place. It was hard to look at her without the tears in his eyes making it difficult to see. She trembled in his arms and every hitched breath she took tore at his heart. He had been a fool to let her go. Sparing another man's feelings in a wasted act of nobility cost him time with the woman he loved and a daughter he hadn't met yet. Lying to Jordan about not sleeping with Nova had been the wrong choice to make eleven months ago. He should've come clean and faced the music back then. It cost him his own happiness. Cost him sharing the journey of Terrina's birth.
He touched and smelled Nova's fragrant hair. She still carried the scent of sugar cookies and strawberries on her skin. Her cornflower blue wrap dress sat snug around her figure. Having babies just made her look enchanting to him.
"Told youâŚtold you I would come the moment you needed me," he said.
She nodded, and they pressed their foreheads together.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you, too."
She burst into tears. He rocked her in his arms, saying her name over and over.
"Are the babies inside?" he asked.
"Van-Van is with Jordan for the weekend. Terrina is inside with my mother and grandmother."
Nova wiped her wet face and puffy eyes.
"Ready to meet your daughter?"
He laughed out loud, and then bit down on his tongue gently to keep himself from leaking more water out of his eyes. He wiped his face and glanced at the welcoming committee on the porch.
"Mawmaw cooked a big Sunday breakfast and invited the family over to see you," she said.
"See me, or beat my ass?" he joked.
Nova's eyes welled up. He stroked her arms.
"Baby, I'm sorry. Bethany told me you're having it rough here. I gotta take that weight off of you. I'm the one who got you pregnantâŚI'm the one who'll fix all of this, too."
He kissed her forehead. She kept her cute pixie cut and fixed her baby hairs to look like curling ocean waves. He rubbed her back. She rested her head on his chest, unable to look at him.
"TerryâŚI didn't know she was yours. Jordan and I got back together, and I tried to put you away in my heart. He started messing up out hereâŚI left himâŚbut I still thought she was his. I wasn't hiding her from youâŚI wasn't trying to keep her a secret from Jordan, either. I didn't realize until after she was born that she wasn't his. I was so frightened of what would happen to me and her when everyone found out what I did. People in my family called me a whoreâŚand JordanâŚ"
She wept. He soothed her as best as he could.
"Just think about usâŚokay? Hold on to us and I promise, NovaâŚthings are going to get better."
"Okay."
She wiped her nose and inhaled deeply to calm herself down. He clasped her hand in his, and she walked him up the steps. Her family members held paper plates of food and hushed their talking as Terry looked at them.
"Everyone, this is TerryâŚTerry Richmond. Terrina's father."
"We can see dat. Can't miss his chirren at all."
The other relatives tittered under their breath. An older woman in her eighties pushed a walker and Nova's family parted to give her room so her eyes could inspect Terry up and down. She had slightly wrinkled, dark pecan-brown skin and gray hair clipped short. Mariam WalkerâŚMawmaw.
"I see una have no shame coming here after putting a baby in her the wrong way."
"Mawmaw," Nova whispered.
"Ma'am, I'm not here to upset you. I want to meet my daughter and be with Nova."
"Be with Nova?"
Mawmaw sucked her teeth and pointed at Nova with an accusatory finger.
"Look ya. Dat is a married 'ooman. You a comeya, messing up the peace of dis family."
"Ma'am, I don't mean any disrespectâ"
"Tie yuh mout!" Mawmaw shrieked.
A female relative stepped forward.
"Okay now, MawmawâŚmy Lord, let the man get inside the house first before y'all put all they business in the street. Hi Terry, I'm CorneliaâŚNova's aunt. People call me Nella. Come inside. Mawmaw is going to fuss no matter what you say."
Nella walked toward the screen and opened it for Terry. She was forty-ish, heavyset, and a shade darker than Nova, but had the same sparkling brown eyes.
"I have some things in the truck to bring in," Terry said.
"Go get 'em, then," Nella said with a warm smile.
Terry walked back down to the truck with Nova. He collected the flowers and gave them to her. Her face brightened up with the full, colorful bouquet in her hands. He grabbed the balloons, Terrina's bag of baby clothes, and chocolate, then headed back to the house with Nova by his side.
"This is for you, ma'amâŚMawmaw," he said.
Mawmaw looked at the big box of expensive Godiva chocolate shells, and her eyes widened; surprised that he was giving her something.
"He tryna butter her up," one of the older men snickered.
Nella waved for him to keep moving.
"Tote all that in here, Terry, c'mon now. Can't let these no-see-ums in the house."
Terry glanced at Nova.
"Mosquitos. The ones here will eat you up and you won't even see them," Nova said.
He grinned hard enough to show his gums.
"They've been eating me up since I got here."
Nova led him inside the quaint living room filled with old, cared-for furniture and several sizes of intricately woven tan baskets with dark brown geometric patterns woven in the detail that decorated the corners. The interior smelled of good southern cooking and something else, something that the west coast didn't quite have yet: the odor of history. His hometown in Louisiana had it. All the south and the east coast had it in abundance. Compared to the south, the west was still young and feeling its oats.
Old family pictures cluttered a mantle, and so many people were crammed inside that it made Terry feel like the Jolly Green Giant. He definitely was the tallest person there. His eyes were drawn to a large painting above the mantle of elongated ebony figures showcasing men, women, and children dressed in clothing from the 1930s with blue-black skin and featureless faces. The painting seemed to be the focal point of the room that gave it a cozy feel rooted in a proud lineage.
Three women Mawmaw's age sat on a couch wearing their good Sunday wigs. They scrutinized everything on him. Somewhere out back, the excited voices of children playing added a comforting noise.
Nova took the bag of clothes from him and set them on an empty chair.
"HelloâŚI'm Terry, pleased to see everyone," he said.
Mawmaw shuffled in with her walker and Nella helped her sit down on an old rocking chair.
"Dis him," Mawmaw said to the ladies on the couch.
Nova introduced him to everyone present. He became eager to make a good impression despite the hard stares and thin-lipped expressions from the elders. All he needed was a knife to cut the simmering animosity in the front room. A giant bible sat propped open on a bookstand next to Mawmaw's rocker. A huge brown lacquered cross hung next to a picture of a tawny Jesus on the wall behind her seat. Terry took in the context clues and understood quickly that he was in a serious religious household. That meant their situation would never be acceptable to MawMaw. The matriarch's frigid brown eyes stared him down like she was going to turn him into a pillar of salt.
A baby's cry interrupted the family showdown.
Mawmaw's eyes immediately softened, and she tried to stand up too fast, almost losing her balance.
"My great-grandbaby is calling for me," Mawmaw said, or at least that's what Terry made out.
The shrill cry shattered the peace again, and Terry felt a lump grow in his throat. He imprinted that sound to memory. That was his daughter. His first time hearing her.
Nella gently pushed Mawmaw back in her seat.
"Bring ha," Mawmaw said.
"MawmawâŚTerry needs to see his baby. He come three thousand miles. Man is probably tired and hungry rushing here. Let him have his time alone with Terrina," Nella said.
Nova placed her flowers on an end table near one of the older adult men sitting in the room and grabbed Terry's hand.
"ComeâŚshe's back here," Nova said.
Her eyes were shiny with pride and love.
They moved past family members who ogled his height and muscular build. His body looked big and battle ready from all of his military training. Moving through a short hallway, they skipped past two other bedrooms and made their way to the last one.
Pauletta, Nova's mother, sat on a worn pistachio green armchair.
"Nova, she's not wet or anything. She might be ready to eat againâ"
She fell silent, spotting Terry standing behind Nova. He sensed a wariness in her eyes, but she only pressed her lips together. Terry looked down at Pauletta's lap. Air rushed out of his chest instantly.
Terrina.
So tiny. So chubby. So adorable. So his twin.
He let out a shaky breath. Pauletta noticed the tears in his eyes. Her demeanor changed immediately. Nova lifted their daughter up and brought her closer to him. Terrina's cheeks held a few dewdrop tears that looked like tiny crystal jewels to him.
"Hey TerrinaâŚmeet your daddy," Nova said.
"Sit down," Pauletta said, leaving the armchair available to him. She left him alone with Nova and the baby.
Terry sat down with a heavy body, and Nova placed his daughter in his arms. Terrina squirmed and made little mewling sounds. Her eyes tried to focus on the enormous face staring down at her. She scrunched her cheeks and eyes up then let out a few "NehâŚnehâŚneh" cries, threatening to bawl loud and long. With tiny clenched fists waving about, her cheeks soon turned a ruddy brown complexion, filled with distressed baby emotion.
"HehâŚhehâŚhehâŚneh," she said.
She lined her green eyes with his, and Terry said her name for the first time to her face.
"Hello Terrina, daddy's here. I made it. Baby girlâŚI'm here," he said.
The deepness of his voice quieted Terrina's discomfort. She latched onto his face with teary eyes and studied him like she had to take a test the next day. He touched her thin blue t-shirt with little white ducks on them and looked over the matching bottoms that covered her diaper. Her hands relaxed, and he touched each finger, admired every little toe. He stroked her ears that stuck out like his, and he sniffed her dark brown curls that looked so full all over her scalp. She had Nova's heart-shaped face and plump cupid-bow lips, but everything else on that baby was him.
"NovaâŚthank you," he said.
He squeezed his eyes shut and made a vow. No one would ever shame Nova for having Terrina. People could keep it in the groupchat about the adulterous affair. Their baby came to them beyond the depths of pain and confusion. Love created her. Nothing more, nothing less.
He heard the murmurings and loud chatter out front. English and Gullah-laced conversations rambled on, but Terry was in a love bubble with Terrina and Nova. Terrina started fretting and moving her limbs about.
"Sit on the bed, Terry. I need to feed her."
He stood and gave up the chair for Nova, then handed her the baby. Nova slid the top of her wrap dress aside and pulled down the flap on her dark blue maternity bra that revealed a heavy breast. Terrina's little body started bouncing with anticipation. She stuck out her tongue and made sucking motions.
"Yes, mommy is going to feed you now," Nova said in a singsong voice.
His heart melted when he witnessed Terrina's slobbery smile for the first time in person. She latched onto the nipple and her chunky cheeks puffed in and out as she fed. Nova rubbed her hair and Terrina stared at her mother with peace in her eyes. Her little feet kicked up, and he touched her toes again.
"I can't believe we made her," he said.
"We did."
Terrina actively sucked away, keeping her little green eyes on Nova's face. Occasionally, her eyes wandered to look at him, still trying to figure out who the unknown man in the room was. Eventually, she released the one nipple from her small mouth and Nova offered her the other one.
"She feeds from each breastâŚyou can tell when she's ready to switch by the way she bounces and slows down on sucking," Nova told him.
Terry kissed Nova on the cheek. He observed it all with wonderment.
"I have a breast pump, so you'll be helping with this," she teased.
"I'm ready," he said.
A creaking sound on a floorboard caught their attention. Mawmaw pushed her walker near the doorway.
"Oonah stomach in ya back?" Mawmaw asked him.
"Excuse me, ma'am?" Terry asked.
Nova giggled. Mawmaw looked at her.
"Axum fuh me," Mawmaw said.
Nova smiled at Terry.
"Are you hungry? We've got plenty of leftovers."
His stomach growled and for the first time, Mawmaw grinned at him.
"Wolf in his belly. C'monâŚfixin' ya plateâŚ"
Mawmaw turned around and shuffled off.
"Go get something to eat. We'll be right here waiting for you," Nova said.
He lowered his head and kissed her firmly on the lips. She parted her lips, and he sought the familiar taste of her tongue to remind himself that she belonged to him. Terrina swatted a chubby finger on his cheek and he kissed her small hand and forehead. Baby powder and Johnson's baby lotion scents wafted into his nose. He wanted to stay but his stomach snitched on him again. Starving.
Terry followed Mawmaw as she rolled her walker past a small dining room into her kitchen. A stove full of big pots and pans caught his eyes, as well as a kitchen table displaying the remains of leftover homemade biscuits, white gravy, link sausages, fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Mawmaw pointed to an empty chair at the far end of the table near the window. A dark-skinned woman in her fifties with short red-dyed locs sat across from him, finishing up a plate of food.
"How you doing? I'm Terry."
"I'm doing well this Sunday. I'm Brielle."
Brielle broke apart a biscuit and smothered it in gravy.
"You drove here, huh?"
"Yes, ma'am. Thirty-seven hours with two catnaps."
"My goodness. By yourself?"
"Yes."
Mawmaw lifted a plate on the counter and scooped out a healthy serving of yellow grits and covered it in shrimp and gravy.
"You have shrimp and grits before?" Brielle asked.
"My mama makes it."
"Where you from?"
"Cypress Bend, Louisiana."
"That's where you drove from?"
"I came from CaliforniaâŚI can get that," he said.
He stood and took the plate and a fork from Mawmaw so she wouldn't have to struggle to move around. She turned and sat on the small seat connected to her walker. He closed his eyes and prayed over his food and when he opened them back up, Mawmaw seemed pleased by the act.
"Una go to church, young man?" Mawmaw asked.
"Not as much as I should. I used to sing in the choir at my church back home. I was raised Baptist."
Mawmaw nodded.
"What oonah parents think 'bout whatchu did?" Mawmaw asked.
"Mawmaw, let him eat his food," Brielle said.
"My house, I talk when I want."
Pauletta popped in and went directly to Mawmaw.
"Mawmaw, Mrs. Tinely is outside. She brought you some of her collards."
Mawmaw, stood and turned her walker toward the front room. Pauletta followed behind her. Terry dug into the food. It was still warm and savory. The grits were creamy with butter, and the gravy was packed with salty bacon and onion bits. Garlic and bell peppers rounded out the flavor, and he smacked his lips.
"This is a good roux. Nice and thick," he said.
Brielle wiped crumbs from her bottom lip with a napkin.
"Listen to me good, Terry. This family has been in an uproar about this situation with you and Nova. We love TerrinaâŚshe's blood and she ain't did nothing wrong coming into the world. I think what you did is wrong, but I understand how things can happen. Shit, we dragged Jordan by his edges, too and it caused a rift between our two families. Mawmaw won't even let him come inside the house anymore. I hope your intentions being here are good for Nova's sakeâŚand my grand-niece."
"They are. I love, Nova."
"Jordan said he loved her, too. Words don't mean nothin' to me. We got two babies who need fathering. If you mean well, all ya gotta do is show us, and you'll be alright young man."
Terry kept eating. Brielle's tone didn't sound adversarial. It was forthright. He acted the same way.
"Who called Nova a whore?"
Brielle blinked twice, and her lips moved slightly to the right of her face.
"Uncle Pete is old school. A deacon in the church. Old people don't mince words."
"I don't either."
She grinned.
"Okay now, that's real good. Don't back down from the naysayers. However, if the Patterson family find out you're here, things might get outta hand. None of them wanna see you 'round these parts."
Terry piled a few sausages on his plate with a biscuit.
"Nobody can run me off from my baby or Nova. I'm taking her with me when I leave. Her and the children."
"Say what now?"
"I didn't come this far to visit and leave by myself. I'm taking my family with me."
"She's not even divorced yet."
"Does she have full custody of Van-Van?"
"Yeah, butâ"
"Then she can leaveâŚfreely."
"You can't take them kids away from Mawmaw. It'll break her heart."
"Nova doesn't want to be here. She's not happy. Who would be, though? Being called names by her family members and looked down on like she's wearing a scarlet letter 'A' on her chest."
Brielle stood and touched his arm.
"It's not everybody, mainly the older ones. Show them who you are and things will smooth over. You already doin' better than Jordan."
"How's that?"
"Mawmaw let you in the house."
Brielle winked her eye and cleared her dishes.
He ate his food in silence. A bunch of children ran into the kitchen from the back door. Three boys and two girls, all around eight to twelve-years-old.
"Who are you?" the oldest girl asked.
"Terry," he said.
The girl stared at his eyes.
"You got eyes like, Terrina."
"I'm her father."
"How you her father when Auntie Nova is married to Uncle Jordan?"
Terry chewed his last piece of sausage and cleaned up his plate in the sink. He left the children staring at his back.
The adults gossiped in the front room and out on the porch. He slipped past them and searched for a restroom. After relieving himself, he stared at his reflection.
"RelaxâŚrelaxâŚ"
He splashed cool water on his face and used a paper towel on the sink to wipe the excess liquid away. His lips curled into a smile, noticing the fancy hand towels on the rack behind him. Mawmaw didn't want anyone touching her nice pink hand towels. Paper towels for everyone. Just like his mama back home.
Before he went back to Nova and Terrina, he wanted to speak to Uncle Pete.
He followed a plastic runner on the floor that led him back to the front room. The elders watched him open the screen and step outside. Mawmaw sat on her walker, talking to a middle-aged fair-skinned Black woman, Mrs. Tinely, in a corner of the porch. Nella perked up when she noticed him.
"Which one of these men out here is Uncle Pete?" Terry asked.
Nella turned her head to show him, but the older man stepped forward. Pete looked to be in his mid-sixties, with a paunchy belly and umber skin. His receding hairline added a few years to his appearance, and the dull brown church slacks and tan button-up shirt screamed conservative and cheap.
"I'm Uncle Pete," the man boomed with a voice almost as deep as Terry's.
"May I speak to you, sir, in private?"
Nella gave Pete a look, and the older man glanced around to see if anyone heard Terry. They did. He followed Pete down the steps with several sets of curious eyes tracking them from the porch. The two men stepped to the right side of the stairs that led to a driveway with part of the house acting as a carport covering. Blue glass bottles decorated a small tree at the edge of the property. Sunlight struck a few of the bottles, creating streaks of blue diffuse refection against the side of the house. He recognized the tradition that was done in Louisiana, too. Used for protection and to ward off evil, his daddy called them spirit bottles. His grandmother in Yazoo, Mississippi had one. The blue color was meant to imitate water and thwart troublesome entities from bothering the home since they couldn't cross over running water. The bottles were supposed to trap them if they dared to trick their way near.
Pete folded his arms across his chest.
"What do you want to speak with me about?"
"I heard that you called Nova a whore because she gave birth to my daughter."
Pete tilted his head and spoke boldly.
"Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whoreâŚlest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness."
Terry stepped closer to Pete, lowering his head so he could look the man directly in the eyes.
"Respectfully, sir, no man, especially a man of God, should disrespect his niece by calling her a whore."
"Tell him!" Nella said.
"Nella!"
Mawmaw's voice echoed loud above them.
Pete looked past Terry. Nella stared down at them with Mawmaw, Brielle and the other men present. Sweat traced several paths on Pete's face from the rising temperature and the sun hanging directly overhead. A glint of blue bottle reflection speckled his cheek.
"Men are talking," Mawmaw said.
"Talk to him, Terry," Nella urged.
"Any anger, disappointment, or harsh words you want to speakâŚyou say them to me. Not her. Jordan broke his vows to her in California first several times over. He'd been doing so even before she came out there. Nova tried her best to be a good wife to him, but he neglected her. Could I have inserted myself into her life properly by waiting for her to divorce? Sure⌠but I didn't, and that's on me."
"I won't stand here and have a snake in the Lord's garden justify his actions leading Nova astray. Her sin and your sin ended a marriage that had been in the making for years. You put asunder two large families, not just two individuals, son."
"I don't need to justify my actions to you. She and I have a beautiful daughter together that I want to support. I plan on taking responsibility for both of them. I'm asking you to stop insulting her because I won't tolerate it."
"You created a broken home, young man. Do ya think coming here absolves you of that? We don't know you. We don't know your people. Had you not interfered, she and Jordan could've weathered the storm with more counseling and time to heal."
Terry placed his hands together in front of Pete.
"Let me make this clear to you, âŚsirâŚNova suffered mental, and emotional abuse with Jordan's infidelity. Physical abuse too, if you count the potential sexually transmitted diseases he could've brought home to her. He screwed so many women that they were sending him care packages overseas while he had a wife and child at home waiting on him. Nova is done with him. Sorry to his family, but I plan on making a new family with her the moment her divorce goes through. Jordan broke his familyâŚnot me."
Terry's voice rose loud enough to concern Nova's people. Pauletta lowered her head. Hearing the full extent of her son-in-law's behavior must've shocked her. A few of the younger men walked down the steps to watch them closer. Nella came down too, with Brielle.
"Jordan ripped her heart out and I'm putting it back in⌠and protecting it from now on. Please save your words about whores and wickedness for him, not Nova."
"She never should've had a child out of wedlock with someone who isn't her husband!"
Nella stepped forward and waved her hands.
"NowâŚnow Uncle PeteâŚlet's not go there. You the last person who should be talking about having kids out of wedlock with all the outside kids you have running around here."
She put a hand on her hip.
"It's always the folks who live in their self-righteous glass houses that wanna throw stones. Be the first ones ready to judge people like they shit don't stink. It's time we all mind our business and let Nova live her life without a bunch of hypocrites wagging they finger. Maybe you need to call Aunt Evelyn and ask her how it felt to be married to you back in the day with all your cheatin' and carrying on."
"I'm a saved man walking with Christ now!"
Pete threw up his hands in disgust and stomped down the street. Nella catcalled him.
"Yeah, kitchen got hot and ya gotta leave with Christ, huh, Uncle Pete? Don't like it when a mirror is put up to your face, huh?"
Pete climbed into a red Escalade and drove off. Brielle rolled her eyes and glanced at Nella.
"Watch him call Mawmaw whining about this later," Brielle said.
"You know he will," Nella said.
Terry walked past the younger men who avoided eye contact with him. He climbed the stairs and looked at the rest of the family on the porch.
"Excuse me," he said.
He grit his teeth and fought the urge to check every single person there. Nova's mother stayed next to Mawmaw. He swept back into the house and picked up Nova's flowers and his daughter's bag of new clothes. Even the children moved out of his way as they sat on the floor watching a cartoon in front of an older model big screen TV.
His long legs carried him to the back bedroom.
Nova held Terrina by the open window where a crib stood. She heard everything through the screen. He placed the bag on the bed and put the flowers on a nightstand.
"Food was good," he said.
She nodded and kissed Terrina's forehead. He moved over to her and wrapped his arms around them both. Looking down at his daughter, he noticed her cheeks puffing out. Nova caught the strained expression on her face, too, and sniffed the air.
"Uh oh, someone's gone stink-stink," Nova said.
She handed him Terrina and dug into a diaper bag under the crib. She grabbed a towel on a dresser and spread it on the double bed. Gesturing for him to bring the baby, she stepped back.
"Time for your first diaper changing session," Nova said.
Oh, Lord.
Terry held Terrina for the longest time until his eyes drooped. His road trip caught up to him and he slept on the bed while Nova fed their daughter once more.
The colors of the sky had changed from powder blue to blue-black when he woke up. The temperature was slightly cooler, yet still muggy. Nova was no longer in the bedroom with him. He heard her voice speaking softly in another room.
Terrina slumbered peacefully in her crib.
Terry stared at her for a long time. His mama and dad would faint with joy, knowing they were finally grandparents. He itched to call them, but decided he would bring Terrina to them as a surprise Christmas gift. They longed for grandchildren out of their three children. But his oldest sister married her husband and raised two golden retrievers as their children. His older brother worked in a fast-paced five-star restaurant in New York as an avowed bachelor. Most of their cousins had children and his parents sulked every holiday, lamenting at the fact they were everyone's favorite aunt and uncle, yet never grandparents capable of spoiling their own grandkids. Terry broke the baby drought finally. He couldn't wait to see their shocked expressions in three months.
He rested his large hand on his daughter's midsection to feel the rise and fall of her chubby tummy. She stirred. Her limbs quivered, and she wiggled a bit before opening her eyes.
"Hi my sweet little girl," he said softly above her.
Her lips poked out, and her fretful expression humbled him. Terry lifted her up and held her close to his heart, bouncing her gently to offset the unhappy noises she made. He was still a stranger to her. He cooed and made soft sounds. She didn't cry, only gurgled and squirmed in his arms. Terry rubbed her back and walked around the room. When he cradled her, Terrina's face looked ready to cry.
"Daddy doesn't want to upset youâŚlet's go find mommy, okay?"
"NehâŚnehâŚ" she replied, with a crinkled nose.
He wandered through the hallway and journeyed to the front room. Mawmaw sat in her rocker with Nova across from her in another armchair. Nella sat on the couch watching the TV. All eyes gazed at him walking in with his baby.
"You must've slept well," Nella said.
He grinned.
Mawmaw studied his presence and he figured the thawing out came from holding his own child and loving on her. It shifted something in the matriarch. Maybe it was the curt words he had with Uncle Pete. He glimpsed lines on Nova's forehead and became alert to restlessness in the mood of everyone there. The bulk of the Walker family already left.
He sat down next to Nella on the couch and Terrina relaxed in his arms as the familiar sound of Nella's baby-talking voice kicked in. Mawmaw glanced at Nova. Nova fidgeted in her seat.
"Terry, Jordan is on his way to drop off Van-Van. He'll be here soon."
"He know I'm here?"
"No."
"I'll stay in the backroom when he comes."
Nova nodded.
"I have to face him soon, Nova. You know that."
"I know."
He stood and padded over to Mawmaw, handing her Terrina. She held the baby close to her chest.
A late evening breeze rattled a few of the bottles on the tree outside. The lights of a car pulled into the carport driveway. Nova jumped up, and Terry retreated to the back bedroom. He sat on the bed and rested his hands on his thighs. A car door opened and slammed shut. Terry waited for Jordan to enter the house with Van-Van. Instead, he heard a woman's voice.
"He had a nap earlier so he may take longer to get to sleep tonightâŚJordan bought him more pull-ups and put them in his bag with the cleaned clothes," the voice said.
"I'll bring him next week earlier," Nova said.
"You can drop him off at Boppie's house, Benji's birthday party is on Friday."
"Alright. Please make sure Boppie keeps Van-Van at the house. If Jordy makes runs, I want someone going with himâŚI don't trust where he goes."
"We're doing everything we can, NovaâŚCharles has been keeping an eye on him. You can call me if you don't want to speak to Jordan directly."
"Is he in the car?"
"Yeah."
"Sober?"
"As far as I know, yeah."
"He must not be if you had to drive and not him."
"He's just tired from earlier. We took Van-Van to the park with Erika's boysâŚhey MawmawâŚNella."
"Hey, Michelle."
"Night."
The front door closed.
Terry peeked from the window and watched Michelle walk down the steps. Her tall frame disappeared under the carport where the back bedroom sat above.
Nova joined him in the bedroom and sat on the armchair. Her face had relaxed from its pinched expression right before Van-Van arrived.
"Nella has Van-Van," she said.
Heaviness pressed down on the room. Reality sunk in for Terry. Nova's life and the life of the children were in his hands. He reached over and held her hand, threading their fingers together.
"Why did you leave Jordan? Did he cheat again?"
Nova lowered her gaze to their hands clasped together and shook her head.
"His friend Charles got him a job at the port authorityâŚhelping to manage the trailers and containers. He makes decent money. I thought we were going to be okay, but thenâŚI started finding tiny plastic baggies around the houseâŚin his car. There were extreme mood swings. He started peeing in the bed almost every night. I thought something was wrong with his prostate. I had to put rubber sheets on our bed because he soaked up two mattresses. He started losing weight, and his face looked gaunt. I thought he was sick and begged him to get help. People I didn't know started hanging out with him. White guys. Backwoods lookin' people. At first I thought they were his new co-workers, but Charles said they were a rough crowd that hung out at a bar I've never been to before. A bunch of drug dealers and users. I showed Charles the little bags, and he told me Jordan was hooked on meth. God, Terry, I wish he was seeing another woman."
She covered her face with her hands.
"Take your time," he said.
She ran a nervous hand over the curls at her nape.
"I confronted him about it and he promised to stop. I changed Van-Van's name during that time because I could see the writing on the wall. He agreed to the change as long as I stayed with him. I did so only to get his signature for the legal documents. I called his parents and told them what was going on. His family did an intervention, and he checked into rehab. He came home and two weeks laterâŚI found the baggies again. That's when I left him. Took Van-Van to my brother's house and then moved here after Terrina was born."
Nova took a deep breath and rubbed her forehead.
"I filed for a no-fault divorce. We have to live apart for a length of time and I'm hoping it'll be finalized by Christmas or New Year's at the latest. I requested full custody of both children and he gave it because he didn't want me filing about his drug use. I just don't understand how someone who had everything handed to him could ruin his life on purpose. He comes from a solid familyâŚhad a promising military career. Our families are so close. The man isn't stupid. He skipped going to college because he wanted to be a marine his whole life like his dad. I thought our life was going to be perfect. But then he left for basic trainingâŚ"
Nova leaned her elbow on the armrest and covered her mouth.
"What kind of man throws his life awayâŚthe life of his son and wife, tooâŚfor nothing?" she asked.
Terry pulled her onto the bed with him. They laid back and faced each other.
"I went to Oceanside thinking my dream had come true. The boy I was crazy about grew up into this handsome, virile man⌠a soldierâŚyet it all turned into a nightmare. When I look back on it, I really think he wanted me pregnant because he didn't think I'd leave him because of our families being tight. He had the nerve to tell me after I handed him our divorce papers that we'd get back together again because no one wants a single mom with two kids."
"What happened when he found out about Terrina?"
Her eyebrows knitted together. It took her a long time to gather her thoughts.
"When she came out of me, none of us suspected anything. She was all wrinkled and very sensitive to light. Her eyes looked puffy, and she slept a lot. It was her ears that caught my attention after I brought her home. ThenâŚit was clear by the eyes that she was yours. Jordy was the first and only man I ever slept with until you came along. I believed Jordy was my one true love, so even when we were on the outs, I never let any other man inside of me."
She stroked his shirt.
"The first time I met you, I thought to myself, 'That is the type of man I want Jordy to become'. When I got to know you better, I knew Jordy didn't have it in him to be like you."
He pulled her in closer. She spoke in a whisper.
"I was attracted to you the first time I met you, Terry. I took one look at your face and got scaredâŚlike I knew my life was all wrongâŚlike I'd made a mistake. The first time I kissed you, I knew you were my destiny. Jordy was out getting high when Terrina was born. He visited us at the hospital lit as hell. His family pressured him to clean up again a few days later, and that's when he found out. He saw Terrina's eyes and got real quiet. Scary quiet. I confessed to him everything. He criedâŚcursed your nameâŚcursed me while I held her in my arms. My brother put him out of the house and we didn't talk for about a week. He came back and said he would claim Terrina as his daughter, no matter what. Said I got my lick back by having another man's baby, but I was still his legal wife and the law would see him as Terrina's father because his name was on the birth certificate. As far as he was concerned, Terrina was his daughter and he would take the L and deal with it. I called Bethany because you had changed your number. She told me to do right by Terrina and tell you the truth. It took me a month to get the courage, and even then, all I could do was send you a picture and my new number. Jordy didn't want anyone to know. Instead of leaving me alone, he got it in his head that he would raise Terrina. I told him I was going to tell you. That's when he threatened to kill you and me if you ever came into the picture."
Terry's body tensed.
"He threatened physical violence against you?"
She nodded.
"Did you tell anyone? Get a restraining order or anything?"
"I went to the magistrate's office, but in order to file a complaint, you must have two incidents of harassment, stalking, or anything else threatening."
"What about when he cursed you out about the baby?"
"He was angry and directed most of his hate at you. Besides, he has a cousin who works in that department, and another cousin who is a cop here. They'd lie on his behalf to protect him and keep their family's reputation intact. I kept the paperwork and let Jordy know if he ever did anything, I would file anyway, and then head to family court to deny him visitation rights with Van-Van. GodâŚnone of them witnessed what I went through with him in California. They coddled him and turned me into the villain who tore the marriage apart. I hate it here so much."
"We have to get tests done for me and Terrina. I have to file paternity rights with the court. I want his name off her birth certificate. NovaâŚI want to take you and the children to Louisiana for Christmas. I haven't told my family about you and Terrina yet because I want to surprise them. I have plenty of leave time to deal with court stuff and spend time here getting to know my baby. But I have to speak with Jordan this week. I can't hide from him. Things will get uncomfortable, but the sooner he knows I'm in the picture, he'll have to come to terms with going through me for anything dealing with you."
"I want to be with you, Terry. I don't want my kids growing up around him. He'll put up a fight with me taking Van-Van away, and I don't want to deal with that or his family."
She broke down in tears.
He wiped her tears away and kissed her nose.
"I don't have much in savings or anything. The only money I get now is what Jordy gives me for the kids. I can get a job when we go to California."
"Don't worry about money or working. I have enough to cover us and I'm making some investments soon for long-term financial moves. We'll figure out a budget and expenses while I'm here⌠together. My condo's lease ends next August. I'll let you decide where we live. I don't even mind commuting if you want to try that TV station internship again."
Her eyes shined with delight at the idea. She'd lost so much with her goals. He was determined to give her those opportunities back.
Someone knocked on the bedroom door.
Terry removed himself from the bed and opened the door. Nella stood before him.
"HeyâŚthe kids want to be with you, Nova. Terry, I made up the pullout bed for you to sleep on in the front room. Mawmaw doesn't want you sleeping in the bedroom with Nova because Van-Van shares the bed with her."
"I'm okay with that," he said.
"I'll bring them in here. Mawmaw is going to bed now."
He nodded and took a seat in the armchair. Nella returned holding a sleeping Terrina. She ushered Van-Van inside. The boy rubbed at his eyes.
"Hi, Van-Van," Terry whispered.
Nella put Terrina in her crib, and Nova pulled her son onto her lap.
"Night y'all," Nella said.
Van-Van stared at Terry with open curiosity.
"I suppose you don't remember me at all, huh, buddy? I was your godfather for a minute."
The toddler leaned into Nova's chest. His little 'fro was an explosion of thick corkscrew curls about three inches long.
"I'll let you two get ready for bed," he said.
He left the room and meandered back to where he would sleep. Two blankets were folded and stacked for him in the middle of the made-up sleeper. He stepped out of the house and drove his truck into the driveway. There were still two bags in the backseat, along with his duffle bag of clothes and toiletries. He left his two rollerbags of clothes under the truck bed covering. No need to pull them out until they left town.
He showered and changed his clothes in the bathroom, donning a thin t-shirt and plain blue pajama bottoms. Brushing his teeth, he settled in for the night. He pulled a wave cap over his hair and returned to the front room. The sleeper bed wasn't too lumpy. The mattress was thin, though.
He fell asleep thinking about Nova in the next room.
Terry awoke to find Nova sitting in the armchair across from the sofa bed, feeding Terrina. He glanced at his phone on the end table. Four in the morning. She looked exhausted and half asleep. Terrina released her nipple and wiggled in her arms.
"Here, give her to me. You go back to bed," he said.
Nova handed him the baby, and he rested Terrina on his chest. Right near his heart.
"Go on," he said.
Nova lingered.
"I'm so happy you're here," she said.
He puckered his lips, and she kissed him.
"Bring her to me if she becomes too much."
"She's never too much for me."
"I'm going to use the pump to make a bottle for you, in case she needs to be fed again in the next couple of hours. I'll put it in the fridge. There's a bottle warmer on the counter right next to the toaster. You can drop it in and press the 'on' button. It's already pre-set for the temperature."
Nova touched her bottom lip and her eyes looked off into the distance as if she were trying to remember something else.
"NovaâŚbabyâŚI'll figure it all out. I know where the diapers, wipes and creams are. Go sleep. I got this. When she's back to sleep, I'll put her in the crib. I have the baby monitor right there if she wakes up again."
Nova wandered back to the bedroom. The soft suction of the breast pump hummed after a few minutes. He looked down at Terrina.
"You and me? Tag team?" he said, softly.
He rubbed her back gently, and she released a little burp that made him smile. Listening to the sounds of the old house, it didn't take long to hear Nova's footsteps moving into the kitchen, putting a bottle away. She ducked her head back in.
"I was able to make two bottles," she whispered.
"Okay. We're good here."
She went back to the bedroom.
Holding his child so close, Terry felt like the world had grown bigger with Terrina in it. Used to living day by day, no further than the week ahead of him, he now had to consider years into the future. She wouldn't always stay a tiny baby. She'd learn to walk, talkâŚrun. He couldn't worry about protecting the country anymore from outside threats. He had to hone in on the tiny girl on his chest from now on⌠his flesh and blood, not the unknown citizens he trained other men to go fight for.
The world could be a dangerous place, and little girls needed fathers who would slay dragons for them. His precious baby slept on his chest for about an hour before he was positive she wouldn't wake up if he moved. He carried her into the back bedroom and quietly put her back in the crib.
Van-Van slept against Nova's side. He watched them both sleep for a minute and then returned to the sofa bed. Sleep wouldn't come to him, so he watched the color of the sky slowly change into pale pastels to bring in the new day. Terrina's soft whimpering crackled on the baby monitor. He rose from his bed and entered the back bedroom again, getting a feel for everything Nova had to do twenty-four seven. Finding the baby's diaper clean, he picked her up; she stared at him, her tiny lips forming shapes as she stuck her tongue in and out.
"Somebody's hungry again. Good Lord, little girl, you'll be as big as daddy if you keep eating so much."
The corners of Terrina's lips went up at the sound of his voice, and she opened her mouth, making breathy sounds. He grinned at her and she gave him the biggest smile that melted his heart.
"Daddy loves you," he whispered.
Nova rolled over and looked at them.
"Sleep some more," he said.
He walked out carrying Terrina and went to the kitchen. Heating the baby bottle was easy and soon enough he was in the front room armchair feeding his daughter an early breakfast. Around seven thirty, Mawmaw and Nella roused up and started cooking breakfast, using the leftovers from Sunday's breakfast.
Mawmaw peeked at him holding Terrina.
"She take to una, real good, huh?"
"Yes, ma'am."
Van-Van ran in and hugged her.
"Mornin'," Mawmaw said.
She patted Van-Van's hair and Nova came out to join him wearing a robe.
"Got some sleep?" Mawmaw said.
"Thanks to Terry."
"Breakfast is ready. Y'all come on in here," Nella said.
Terry could tell Mawmaw wanted to hold Terrina, but she moved her walker toward the dining room. He started following them, but stopped when he smelled a sudden odor. He sniffed and looked at Terrina. Her cheeks puffed out like she had jawbreaker candies stuck in them. Stink-stink.
He changed her diaper and enjoyed the rest of the day with his new family. Mawmaw started talking to him about his life and Nella listened in while weaving sweetgrass baskets with Nova on the porch. The women's nimble fingers wove the pleasant-smelling plant fiber using a long nail and twisting the long strands of sweetgrass around. Nella sold them in a little shop she co-owned with a cousin and also online.
Mawmaw was a master basketweaver and taught her children and grandchildren the skill. Nova instructed him on how to start his own basket and he was able to weave a little coaster for his beers. She showed him the round earrings she made for herself and wore them proudly. There was something sacred about watching the women weave as Mawmaw overlooked their work with advice and suggestions on the designs. He admired the baskets around the house that were over a hundred years old and crafted by Mawmaw's aunts and other kin. She told him stories about cymbee spirits in the rivers surrounding the island and warned him about trickster mermaids in the ocean who loved to seduce handsome men and drag them to their watery world. Terry grinned and Mawmaw teased him, "They like a big fella like una. Watch out now!" Nova giggled with embarrassment witnessing her grandmother warming up to him further.
In the late afternoon, he went for a walk to the beach with Nova and the children. She fitted his shoulders and midsection with a stretchy orange baby wrap, and placed Terrina in it so he could carry her while she held Van-Van's hand. A shyness came over her as they joined hands for the first time in public. Van-Van's curiosity about him would transform their relationship. This was their first step in becoming something new in the world together.
They watched Van-Van run around on the beach with his toddler waddle. Terrina fell asleep, and he loved the feel of her warm little body snug against his. On the way back, they stopped by the bottle tree so Van-Van could look at the pretty blue colors sparkle in the sunlight.
After putting the children down for a nap, he and Nova called to make an appointment for the paternity test. They also narrowed down a choice of lawyers to a Black woman with a solid reputation. He called and spoke to her directly, making a personal appointment for Wednesday.
By dinner, Terry grew comfortable in Mawmaw's house. He washed the dishes and looked after the children with Mawmaw while Nova helped Nella clean the porch. They laughed and told jokes and seemed at peace until Nova's father showed up.
Mr. Titus Easton was fifty-one, broad-shouldered, good-looking, with a cleft chin, and a boisterous energy about him. It reminded Terry of Jordan.
"Terry, this is my father. Daddy, this isâŚwell, you know who he is," Nova said.
Mawmaw and Nella left the front room to find other things to do in the house. Van-Van played with the Captain America doll, and Nova held their daughter.
"Sit down, young man," Titus said.
Nova turned to leave the room, but her father pointed for her to sit on the couch next to Terry. Titus sat in the armchair and stared at them both with sad eyes.
"I didn't come to Sunday breakfast with your mother Nova because I was too upset and afraid of what I would say while everybody was here. But I thought about it and I want to know what you two plan on doing."
Terry sat close to Nova as she cuddled Terrina. Van-Van went on about his business saving the world with Sam Wilson on the floor.
"I contacted a lawyer, sir, and this Wednesday I'm getting a DNA test to establish paternity. We're getting Terrina's birth certificate amended as soon as possible."
"And then what? My daughter's divorce hasn't gone through. She's still married to Jordan. What are your intentions besides taking care of the child you made with her?"
Terry didn't sense anger in Titus. The man genuinely sounded worried for his daughter and grandchildren. Terry hadn't planned to talk about marriage until he asked Nova for her hand, but her father pressed him to speak about everything.
"I want to marry her, Mr. Easton."
Nova's eyes widened, and she couldn't hold back a smile.
"I see. Will you relocate here?"
"No. I'm taking Nova with me. The children, too."
Titus kept quiet. He looked at his grandson on the floor.
"Does your mother know this, Nova?"
"No."
"Is this really what you want to do?"
"I want to be with Terry. We have a daughter now, and we need to be together to raise her. Van-Van as well."
"Is he a good man?"
"Better than good, daddy. He supports me. Loves me. Wants to be with me."
Terrina wiggled and Terry took her from Nova's arms. Titus looked at his granddaughter's precious face and then studied the same features on Terry's.
"Terry is the one, daddy. Jordan was a terrible mistake that can't be fixed. Prayer and counseling don't work. He broke meâŚbrought me to my lowest."
Nova's lip trembled, and she buried her face against Terry's shoulder. Titus stood and walked over to her.
"Come here, sweetheart," Titus said.
Nova stood and hugged her father. He stroked her hair and patted her back.
"It's okay, sweetheart. I had to come see for myself. I've always wanted the best for you and you've always been a good person who worked hard and did all the things in life right. It hurt me when your mother told me about what Terry saidâŚhow you suffered so much humiliation. Why didn't you tell us when you were out there?"
Nova wiped her eyes.
"You taught me to always try to work through problemsâŚand Jordy and IâŚit was hard to tell everyone the truth about him because everybody had such high expectations for usâŚfor our families connecting. I didn't want to give up if there was a chance for things to get better. They just didn'tâŚnot even when we came home."
"OkayâŚokayâŚI understandâŚ"
Titus comforted his daughter. He stepped back from her and held his hands out for Terrina.
"May I?"
Terry handed the baby to him.
"Hey punkin, grandpa came to see you and Van-Van."
Van-Van heard his name and jumped up, grabbing hold of Titus's leg, showing him his new action figure.
"He fly, grampa," Van-Van said.
"He does? Lemme see."
He moved over to the middle of the floor and Van-Van ran in a circle around him, holding up Sam Wilson. Titus spent an hour with his grandchildren before handing Terrina over for a feeding.
"Come to the house for dinner on Thursday," Titus said. "We'll break the news to your mother and work out ways to help you."
"Thank you, daddy," Nova said.
Titus held out a hand to Terry.
"We can talk againâŚlater. I feel like things are moving too fast for the two of you, but I won't stand in your way," Titus said.
"I respect that," Terry said.
Titus left, and Nova continued feeding the baby. Van-Van showed Terry the other things he bought for him and they interacted in a way that made Mawmaw smile when she returned to the front room and settled into her rocking chair.
The evening quieted his mind and he sat with Nova on the porch trying to catch a cool breeze. They held hands and talked quietly, reminding one another of why they fell in love. Each of them had inquisitive minds and they admired that about the other. Technology and new media interested them and they laughed about the short videos she posted on social media back in Oceanside, where she described life as a marine wife and Sci Fi geek. She had a couple of popular videos where she talked about books and others about being a new mother that went viral before she left for South Carolina.
On Wednesday, they packed up the baby in a car seat and left Van-Van with Nella to babysit so they could get the paternity test done at the South Carolina Department of Social Services. Cheek swabs were taken for him and Terrina, and afterward, they headed over to see his lawyer, Shelly-Anne, where they would make sure all legal paperwork went through her. They explained their situation and Nova gave Shelley-Anne Jordan's address to be notified of the legal proceedings as they came about pertaining to Terrina.
He dropped Nova and the children off at her parent's house Thursday morning and drove to a popular Charleston barbecue joint, Rodney Scott's BBQ. Terry didn't tell her he was meeting Jordan face to face before dinner with her parents. She would've freaked out and probably insisted that she come with him. He had to see the man alone. But he kept the venue public.
Arriving ten minutes after the place opened, he requested a seat on the outside patio and waited. He spotted Jordan as he rounded a corner.
The man didn't look well at all. Jordan once had the physique and clean-cut look the marines put on the cover of brochures for marketing, but nowâŚ
Meth had taken a toll on him.
There were deep grooves in his cheeks and the weight loss startled Terry. Jordan looked half his former size. Some muscle mass still gave him a cut, lean look with his frame, but the scruffy beard that didn't connect and the faraway look in his eyes hinted at the man's struggle. People who didn't know Jordan would probably see a handsome Black man out in casual dress of basketball shorts and a hoodie with a purposely unkempt short 'fro, with legs in need of lotion. To Terry's eyes, the man appeared unwell, and not just physically.
Jordan peered at the other patrons on the far side of the patio area with suspicion. When he lined his gaze with Terry, his body tensed and he halted, as if Terry were an apparition he wasn't truly expecting to see. There was no masking the blistering contempt in his eyes.
Jordan moved closer with an erratic bounce in his step and sat down across from him. For a full five minutes, they stared at each other. Actually, Terry stared and Jordan glared. A server brought them water and menus.
"We'll need some time looking this over. There's a lot to choose from," he told the server.
"No problem."
The young white woman walked away. Jordan leaned forward.
"I asked you to your fucking face if you were fucking her, and you told meâŚto my faceâŚthat you weren't. Some friend you turned out to be."
Terry didn't break eye contact and kept his cool.
"Why did you sleep with her?"
"Because your neglect made it easy to take her."
His voice came out condescending, and that's not how Terry wanted to sound. That was ego talking. That was male flexing to dig at a loser. False bravado masking the dirt on his hands for taking another man's woman even though he knew it was wrong. Jordan wasn't really a loserâŚjust lost. Somewhere along his path to adulthood, he got stunted. Used other women to hide whatever internal failings he had.
Terry folded his hands on the table.
"I fell in love with her, Jordan. It's as simple as that. You didn't want her. I did. Now she and I have a child togetherâ"
Jordan slammed his fist on the patio table. Terry glanced around. No one paid attention to them isolated in a corner.
"Nova is my wifeâ"
"Estranged wife. That divorce paperwork is coming soon. I'm also getting my name put on Terrina's birth certificate. I want you to hear this from me firstâŚI'm taking Nova away from Charleston."
His words slowly registered in Jordan's brain. Tears welled up in the man's eyes.
"I take care of both my kids," Jordan barked. "Terrina is my daughter legally. I pay child support for her. Whatever you and Nova had is over, nigga. You're not taking my wife and kids outta Charleston."
"Nova doesn't want to be here. Her life will be away from you. I'm sorry, man. That's the way it's going to be. From now on, we'll work out things civilly without short-changing you. You can stop paying for Terrina because that's my responsibility as her father. You're Novan's father. Nothing changes that. But let's be real here. You failed Nova as a man. Look at youâŚwasting away like you don't care. Stressing her out to where she wants to leave her entire family. We can set up visitation for you and Van-Vanâ"
Jordan lunged across the table. Terry anticipated the action, deflecting Jordan's hands away. Both men stood up and faced off. Jordan reached into the kangaroo pockets of his hoodie and Terry clearly saw him grip the outline of a gun. He quickly glanced around to make sure no patrons were nearby to get hurt. Holding up his hands to his chest, Terry stayed calm. From his peripheral, he noticed Titus approaching them.
"He has a weapon, Mr. Easton," Terry said under his breath, not wanting to escalate the situation.
"Jordy, stay easyâŚlet's not get out of hand," Titus said.
"Why'd you invite him here?" Jordan said.
"I didn't."
Titus gingerly approached Terry's side.
"Your sister Michelle got a hold of me and told me you were meeting Terry here. She was worried about you getting into it, and she was rightâŚwe can all work this thing out like sensible men."
"Work things out? He's stealing my wifeâŚtaking my kids away from me."
Titus glanced at the outline of Jordan's hand gripping the gun.
"Jordan, we can get you some help. Get you back on the right track," Titus pleaded.
"Nah. I'ma get me a lawyerâŚI'm gonna fight this. Fight for my marriage. Ain't no slick, pretty boy taking my family away from me. Life ain't promised, but death is for sho'. I'll kill you first, Terry, before I let you take what's mine. Your days are numbered, nigga."
A police vehicle rolled by on the street, spooking Jordan. He stormed past Titus and left the patio just as other patrons entered to be seated. Terry took a deep breath and sat down. Titus took over Jordan's spot across from him.
"IâŚI had no idea he was that far gone," Titus said. "I knew he had problems, butâŚhe actually wants to kill you."
"I can take any threat as long as it doesn't go toward Nova."
Titus's hands shook.
"His eyes looked so dead. That is not the same young man that married my daughter. My God."
The server returned and Terry encouraged Titus to eat lunch with him inside the establishment with a good view of the entrance, in case Jordan returned. They ordered pulled pork with coleslaw and hushpuppies. Pauletta planned on cooking an enormous meal for their dinner, so a sandwich with easy sides was what the two men allowed themselves to indulge in. Terry's calm dealing with an agitated Jordan impressed Titus. They spoke about his work in the marines and he explained from his side of things how he fell for Nova. He tried to keep away from her, but the pullâthe attraction â was just too damn strong. Titus let slip a smile at the way Terry described all the qualities that made Nova special to himâŚmade him willing to risk it all for her. Her sweetness. The way her mind worked. How she made him feel whole when he was with her. How she made everyone want to be their best selves when she was around. Her low country cooking. The unassuming beauty she carried inside and out. He couldn't tell him the more mushy poetic things he felt, like how the sun rose in her eyes, or how her kisses gave him the breath of life, or how her touches on his skin turned him into sculptor's clay that she could shape any way she liked.
They ate their food and got to know each other as mature men wanting the best for Nova and the children.
Terry followed Titus back to his Victorian-styled home. Neither of them wanted to alarm the women about Jordan, but Titus encouraged Terry to find a place to stay where he could keep Nova and the children safe quickly.
Dinner was tense with Titus and Terry listening for any cars pulling up, or waiting for calls to come at Nova. The Easton household had outdoor security cameras, and that helped with any warning. Nova kept her phone off and that left her in the dark until they ended the meal, when she wanted to call Nella and Mawmaw and let them know they were on their way back. Titus had sounded the alarm to the Patterson family after they left the BBQ spot, and Jordan's people searched the streets of Charleston looking for him, afraid he would harm himself. Everyone agreed Terry was the target, and Nova called Jordan's mother, Boppie, to cancel all of Van-Van's weekend visitations with his father until further notice.
Both families were on edge. Terry found a decent extended stay hotel with a small kitchen and double beds. Nova turned it into a home for them, cooking hearty meals and sharing childcare with him. The hotel afforded them some measure of safety and freedom until his lawyer completed his legal paperwork. Titus paid for their accommodations for a month and checked in with Terry every day.
Through it all, he bonded with Terrina and Van-Van.
His daughter loved the animated way he'd speak to her and nothing gave him joy in the morning more than waking up to the sound of her squeals or Van-Van tapping his face to wake him up for a trip to the nearby park. Nova became more relaxed in her own space. At night, when the children were fast asleep, they snuggled together under the covers, their only intimacy holding each other. They laughed and chatted away the hours, reigniting a passion that never left, even when she had been far away from him. Sharing a bed with Nova unlocked a new level of closeness he never experienced with a woman before. She tended to talk with her hands, gesticulating her points with dramatic sweeps in the air like butterflies dancing. While he spoke of his dreams for them, she would stare deep into his eyes. His voice mesmerized her and sometimes she'd look at him as if entranced, even if he was just talking about buying her a car when they returned to Oceanside.
The first time they shared a bed all night together, Terry awoke with a jolt several times in a fitful sleep, and had to feel for her in the dark to make sure she was still by his side. He cherished the first time he watched delicate rays of yellow morning light touch her face before she woke up.
Sometimes they kissed. Other times they spooned and luxuriated in the freedom to touch each other without a time limit. Nothing sexual took place. That wasn't important to him. She was still healing and their reconnection started with the mental, which was where their love began in the first place. Talking to each other and discovering the hidden layers. Each night became a fun slumber party, and they'd hide under the covers to whisper to each other, not wanting to wake the babies.
He made the mistake of buying Van-Van a children's book that had bells and whistles and little noise makers on each page to correspond with the story. The boy loved playing with it every day as Terry read to him, but seemingly it occurred at the most inopportune times when Nova tried to put Terrina to sleep. She hid the book in a drawer from her son who always asked Terry to read it to him. However that didn't work because Terry also liked playing with the book, and would amuse himself with it after Van-Van went to sleep. Nova literally had to pry it out of his hands at night to hide it from him, too.
"I swear, you're just as bad as Van-Van, making all that noise when you know Terrina is trying to sleep," she'd scold with a playful tone.
Nova took him to his first baby doctor appointment for Terrina. She was weighed and measured and the doctor was pleased with her progress. He watched his baby receive a fresh dose of vaccine shots for two-month-olds. He nearly started crying himself, listening to his daughter wail after her shots. Her trembling bottom lip covered her top one as tears spilled down her chubby cheeks while he cooed soft words of comfort. His love for her soared and he walked around feeling blessed.
Two weeks in, he called his friend Von and had a long talk with him about his new life. Von took it in stride, although there was a slight hint of disappointment that he hadn't confided in him about his struggles being in love with Nova. He also called his friend Angie over a video chat and she listened to him, flabbergasted, for an hour.
"You must tell your parents," Angie said.
"I want to surprise them for Christmas.'
"Your mother will have a fit if you deny her this time to know Terrina and Novan."
"It's only a couple of months."
"Trust me on this."
Nova walked in on him with the children at the hotel. She'd gone down to the courtyard to get some air and to let Van-Van explore.
"I told Angie about usâŚabout Terrina," he said.
Nova handed him the baby, and Terry showed his firstborn to Angie.
"OhâŚTerryâŚawâŚshe's so cuteâŚlisten, I'm hanging up. Make a zoom chat with your parents. They have to know about this before Christmas."
He glanced at Nova.
"What do you think?" he asked.
Nova released Van-Van's hand and sat down on the bed next to him.
"I agree with Angie."
"Hey, Nova. I'm happy for you both. I really am."
"Thank you."
"I'm jumping off this call. Contact your parents right now, T. Bye!"
He lifted Terrina into his arms and sniffed her dainty curls. They smelled like cocoa butter.
"We should do it now while it's still earlyâŚand I'm feeling brave," Nova said.
He carried the baby over to his laptop on the hotel desk and Nova dragged a wingback chair next to the roller one he plopped down in, holding Terrina. His entire body shivered and his mouth went dry. He always did video chats with his parents every two weeks, so it wouldn't be out of the blue contacting them. Nova rubbed his arm.
"Are you nervous too?" he asked.
"A little."
He glanced over at Van-Van, who happily played with two race cars Terry bought for him. His squeals of delight encouraged Terry to turn on the laptop. Nova held Terrina for him, freeing his hands to text his mother quickly. His mother, Tonette, responded three minutes later, asking him to wait five minutes so she could get his father from their backyard garden.
The time came, and he sent a link to his parents to jump on a call with him. His parent's faces popped up together, but on his half of the screen, he left up the avatar picture of himself in full marine regalia.
"We can't see you Jaybird," Tonette said.
"I'll turn on the camera in a minute mama, but I need to talk to you both about something important."
"They're finally shipping you out, aren't they?" Tonette asked.
His mother's pleasant face shifted into a concerned expression behind her glasses. The short micro-braided brown bob she sported gave her a youthful exuberance. The tone of his voice brought worry lines to both of his parent's foreheads. His father, Gordon, pressed his lips together, steadying himself for any news that could be bad. Terry noticed the sun's darkening of his light nutmeg-colored skin from spending days of his early retirement outdoors growing beans and squash. He'd recently trimmed his beard that had more gray in it.
"Is that why you couldn't come see us?" Gordon asked.
Terry took a deep breath and watched his avatar blink as he spoke.
"I had to take a trip to South Carolina to meet someone."
His mother clasped her hands together.
"You finally have a steady girlfriend? Is that it?"
Her face became animated.
"UmâŚit's a little more than that, mama. I did meet someone special. Three years ago. It's a bit complicated, but we've decided to be together. Her name is Nova."
"NovaâŚooh that's so different. That's Latin for 'new', isn't it Dino?" Tonette said.
She nudged his father's arm, using her nickname for him.
His father's expression remained neutral. He could hear the stressors in Terry's voice.
"I'm going to bring her with me to Christmas."
Tonette's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"Oh, she's definitely special if you're bringing her home with you," Tonette joked. "Jaybird, is your camera not working?"
Terry glanced at Nova, and her eyes were bright, appreciating his mother's enthusiasm.
"Mama, Dad, when I come, I'm bringing you a very special Christmas gift, but I want to share it with you now."
"If it's special, save it for then," Tonette said.
Terry swallowed the lump in his throat. His father's face loomed on the screen next to his mother.
"I can't save my gift because she'll be a lot bigger by then, and I want you to see her now."
"See her?" Gordon asked.
Terry tapped the camera view on his end. He cradled Terrina in his lap with Nova pressed into his side.
His mother's mouth fell open.
"Nova and I had a baby. This is your first grandchild. Say hello to Terrina Octavia Richmond."
His mother burst into tears and nearly knocked her glasses off by holding her face in surprise. His father's eyes lit up so brightly that Terry could feel the warmth eight hundred miles away.
"Oh my, GodâŚoh my God," Tonette murmured.
She peeked at Terrina with watery eyes. His father swelled with pride. Terrina babbled and cooed, her baby feet kicking his thighs.
"That's my grandbaby?" Tonette asked.
"She sure is, mama."
"She looks like you, oh Lord, she looks like me too!"
Tonette laughed and covered her mouth. She gazed at Nova.
"Hello, Nova...oh, I look a mess. Had I known this was a momentous occasion, I would've dressed up to meet my grandbaby!"
His mother sniffled and hid her face in Gordon's neck.
"Hi there, TerrinaâŚI'm your grandpaâŚGrandpa Dino."
Nova wiped her eyes and looked at Terry. They both didn't want to go into how it all happened, but they had to. His mother calmed down, her face all blotchy and wet from the news.
"How come you didn't tell us?" Tonette asked.
"It's complicated, mama. Nova and I are dealing with something, and it's why I had to come to Charleston to get her and Terrina."
"What's going on?" Gordon asked.
Van-Van squealed and ran over to them, waving a toy truck around.
"You gave us two grandbabies and didn't tell us?" Tonette shouted with glee.
"Novan is my son from a previous relationship," Nova said, her voice quivering.
"We get to have two grandbabies for Christmas?!"
Tonette was over the moon.
"Van-Van, go play over there so we can talk, okay, baby?" Nova said.
"Hi Van-Van, it's your Grandpa Dino."
"Hi!" Van-Van shouted.
"He is so adorable," Tonette said.
"Mommy, come play with my doll."
"In a minute. Mommy has to talk some more, okay?"
"Talk to the people in the TV?"
Gordon chuckled, and Tonette beamed in her seat, so enamored with both children.
"How old are you, Novan?" Tonette asked.
Van-Van held up two fingers and then ran over to his bed. He played with all the cool toys in his new collection.
"MamaâŚDadâŚNova and I met three years ago in Oceanside. She was married to a soldier I trained andâŚwellâŚhe mistreated her. She and I fell in love while she was pregnant with Novan and then we parted when she wanted to make things work out with her husband."
"You're still married, Nova?" Gordon asked.
"I'm waiting for my divorce to go through. I gave birth to Terrina here, in Charleston, and didn't know she was Terry's until I saw her. We recently had a paternity test done and we're waiting for Terry's name to go on the new birth certificate."
"My goodness," Gordon said.
Terry's parents looked at each other with a wordless understanding. Terry cleared his throat.
"As soon as I get the paternity papers, I'm going to convert my accrued vacation leave into paternity leave so I can save all those other vacation days for another time. I get twelve weeks of paternity leave, and we want to spend that time with you in Cypress Bend. That way you can know the baby, NovanâŚand Nova."
Tonette burst into tears again and left her seat. Gordon nodded his head.
"You can stay for as long as you like. We can't wait to meet you, Nova," Gordon said.
Tonette returned with a tissue in her hand, sans glasses. She wiped her eyes and sat back down.
"Sorry y'all, I'm just overwhelmed. I can't believe all of this. I'm happy âŚoverjoyed. I've been wanting this for so longâŚoh! Nova, I don't know if he told youâŚwe've been waiting to have grandchildren for years. Dino is retired, and I work part-time now from home, so we have plenty of time and the energy to help with grandbabies, and none of our kids gave us any! I need pictures and video. I have to tell everyone and brag that I'm a grandma now!'
Tonette stared at Terrina. The baby seemed confused by the voices and faces staring at her.
"Say hi to Grandma and Grandpa," he said.
Terrina stared up at his face and gave him a happy smile. His parents watched him, and Terry let go of the anxious burden that sat in his chest from the start of the call. They accepted the situation.
"My baby had a baby," Tonette said, and wept again.
Their call lasted nearly three hours until Terrina had to nurse. Nova moved out of view of the camera to feed Terrina and Van-Van chatted with his parents for another twenty minutes until they ended the call.
Terry put Van-Van down for a nap, and Nova placed Terrina inside the portable crib he purchased when they first moved into the hotel. He cuddled with Nova on their bed. Relief shined in her face. His parents accepted her with open arms and no judgment.
"They are going to fall in love with you the way I did," he reassured her.
"I'm so happy they took to Van-Van well."
"Are you kidding? Did you hear my mother? She's already shopping on Amazon to order everything that little boy could ever want for Christmas. I bet she's going to have matching pajama sets for all of us when we get there."
"I can't wait to meet them in person."
His cell phone blew up with texts from his brother and sister. Even his favorite cousin Mike left a voicemail congratulating him. He shot off photos and videos of Terrina and Van-Van from his phone. Angie had been right. Telling his parents sooner would make their Christmas even sweeter together. Also, the truth about them as a couple was out in the open. Nova was excited about staying in Louisiana for a good chunk of time during the holidays. She looked so happy. All he could do was hold her tight.
Shelly-Anne filed the paperwork for the birth certificate.
Terry held the copy of the parternity results. He informed his commander that he'd already contacted Human Resources to claim his paternity leave, and spent most of his days organizing his personal affairs. He set up an allotment to Nova's bank account for the children and contacted his health insurance company to add them, too. Things were falling into place nicely.
He took a drive around town alone to enjoy the day while Nova spent the afternoon with her mother and Brielle shopping for clothes. He gave her money to buy herself some new things to spoil herself. By late afternoon, Nova texted about Jordan's suspension from his job for acting strange. His friend Charles sent him home. Terry had been ready to shoulder the responsibility of providing for Van-Van. Nova wanted to use his child support money as a monthly college deposit for her son. If Jordan's financial stability tanked already, he'd have to fine tune the budget he and Nova put together for their expenses. She had encouraged Terry to think about finishing college after he left the marines. He completed his junior year at Louisiana State University before dropping out to join Von in the military after Von lost his athletic scholarship because of a serious football injury. They both started acting a little wild and the marine discipline shaped them both right up.
Terry stopped at a bar & grill to eat a burger and have a beer before joining Nova and the kids. His mother kept texting him questions about Nova and her interests so she could find Christmas gifts for her. Nova loved to read, and he mentioned books. Since she picked Terrina's middle name after her favorite science fiction writer, Octavia E. Butler, he suggested a box set collection of Octavia E. Butler's Patternmaster series that he checked out online on Nova's public wishlist. Moments later, his mother sent him a jpeg of the book set she ordered for Nova. Terry tapped his front pants pocket. He had the perfect gift he planned on giving her.
An engagement ring.
He had to be slick trying to get her ring size without her knowing. While she slept, he snuck one of her everyday rings out of her small jewelry box she packed at the hotel. He took it to the best jeweler in town and chose an oval cut diamond ring with a 14K white-gold band. Taking the black velvet box out of his pocket, he set it on the bar table and peered at it again. He planned to do his big one by proposing to her properly on Christmas Eve when his entire family got together for caroling and eating oysters with champagne, a family tradition. He would use that time as a partial engagement party for them among his family and friends. Von and Bethany were going to be there for Christmas, and he would take that time to ask Von to be his best man for a future wedding after they settled in Oceanside. Maybe they could have a beach wedding with flag football. He grinned. In his mind, he could already see Nova running up to him in a puffy white wedding dress, snatching a flag from around his tuxedo as he tried to throw a football.
He pocketed the ring box and paid his tab. Wandering out to his truck, he had the sensation of being watched.
The parking lot was full of cars. He glanced back and forth, looking for other patrons. No one. He couldn't shake the feeling and moved with caution. Starting his truck, he didn't waste time glancing at his phone like he normally would to check-in with Nova. He backed out and drove onto the street, checking his rearview constantly. Going straight to Nova's parents had been the plan, but he opted to drive around to make sure he wasn't being followed by Jordan.
Merging onto a main highway that led to the suburbs, he noticed a dark, mid-sized sedan following him. He changed lanes twice and sped up, but the other vehicle filled the gap between them by at least three car lengths. Tinted windows didn't help him make out the driver, and the two-lane road had no other cars heading in their direction.
The other car sped up next to him and swerved to the right like it wanted to hit him, causing Terry to jerk the wheel and fly off the shoulder onto a grassy field. He braked hard before his truck hit a ditch and rolled. Startled, his eyes narrowed, and he shifted gears. He chased the car down, losing it on an off-ramp. He considered following, but didn't know the area well enough to trust that he wasn't being led to more trouble. Unable to confirm it was Jordan or some racist redneck trying to be funny, Terry continued to Nova's parents.
Outside the Easton home, Nova argued with four other adults alongside her parents. Terry pulled into the driveway and hopped out. He recognized an older woman as Jordan's mother, Boppie and Jordan's sister Michelle, along with their father, Maxwell. He guessed the other man harassing Nova and her parents was a brother. Jordan's mother was teary-eyed, but cursed a blue streak at Nova and Pauletta. Titus stayed in front of his wife as Jordan's father spewed angry words like his spouse. The Easton's returned the same fervor, blaming Jordan for everything.
Boppie spotted Terry and shouted, taking her purse and striking him in the face. Nova shoved the woman back.
"Don't you touch him!" Nova screamed.
Terry touched his lip. The purse emblem cut his lip. He bled a little and Pauletta charged Boppie, but Titus held his wife back. Michelle yelled at Nova.
"He has a right to see his son! So do we!" Michelle shrieked.
"How can you do this to Jordy, Nova? To us?" Boppie screeched.
Terry reached for Nova's arm and tried to pull her away, but she thrust herself in front of Jordan's relatives.
"Jordy is a fucking meth addict!" Nova screamed. "Stop treating him like a baby and demand that he act like a grown ass man for once and control his substance abuse! I'm leaving this place and there's nothing you can do about it!"
Terry let her get the emotions out. It felt terrible watching two close families go at each other, however he recognized the power it took for Nova to speak up for herself and her needs, no longer letting her ex's trials and tribulations stop her from moving on.
"I will never trust him with Van-Van! None of you!"
Boppie threw her head back and lashed at the sky, begging God to intervene. Maxwell glared at Titus.
"You'll let some stranger tear apart twenty-five years of friendship?" Maxwell said.
Titus walked up to his friend.
"Jordan needs help, Max. He's abusing that stuff. He abused my daughter's trust. Humiliated her as his wife. I watched him threaten to kill Terry with a gun!"
"Liar! He would never do something like that!" Boppie shrieked.
Maxwell wore bewilderment on his face.
"He had a gun?" Maxwell asked.
"He carried it in his hoodie," Titus said.
Nova stomped over to the Patterson's.
"I'm leaving this state. Jordy needs long-term help. Something is wrong with him and I won't let my son be around any of you in the future until you deal with that. Terry is the man I loveâŚwe're leaving soon and I don't want you coming to my parent's house like this ever again!"
The tone in her voice quieted everyone present.
A police car pulled up to the curb. The neighbor called for disturbing the peace. Terry glimpsed an older white man standing in his driveway across the street with a cordless phone, observing the entire confrontation.
"Let's go in," he said.
He ushered Nova and her mother inside the house while Titus dealt with the cops and the Patterson family. Nova shook with a feral rage in his arms.
"Can we leave here now?" she begged him.
"We'll head out Wednesday. I'll reserve the U-Haul tonight," he said.
The cops gave Titus a warning, and it took a long time to calm Nova down. She wanted to fight everybody. Pauletta wept about them leaving, but nothing would change their minds. Nova tended to his cut lip, and he kept his mouth shut about being run off the road. They were leaving Charleston. That's all that mattered.
Within two days, they had a U-Haul cargo trailer ready to hitch on his truck in Mawmaw's driveway. Nova packed everything she owned inside of it. She carried purpose and determination on her face, and he loved her more for it.
He spent a brisk fall Tuesday morning making a final payment to his lawyer for her work and bought Nova a bouquet of sugary pink roses just because. Under different circumstances, Charleston might've been a cool place to vacation and spend more time in, but the Patterson family soured every inch of the low country for Terry. His mind stayed on spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family in Cypress Bend.
"Comeya, follow me," Mawmaw said, after a hearty lunch.
She had cooked Nova and Terry fried fish and Charleston red rice with a side of thick okra soup, and he suspected it was an attempt to keep them there longer by stuffing him with delicious food. He followed her into the front room.
"Take it down," she said.
She pointed to the painting above the mantel. He lifted the heavy frame from the thick hook in the wall.
"Dat is my gift to una⌠and Nova. Parta we go with the chirren. Hear me?"
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
Nella and Nova wrapped the painting in a blanket and he secured it carefully under the truck bed covering he kept locked. Mawmaw also handed him a small sweetgrass basket she made.
"I put Carolina Gold Rice in dere. Nova cook up some red rice for oonah family," Mawmaw said.
Uncle Pete arrived and picked Mawmaw up. She didn't want to be around when they left in the morning, and gave long hugs and kisses to Van-Van, Terrina, and Nova. Before climbing into Pete's Escalade, she moved away from her walker and hugged Terry. Whatever litany of exaggerations she may have formed in her mind about him when he first arrived had dissipated. He was family now.
"Take care of Nova and dem chirren, hear?" she whispered in his ear.
"I promise, Mawmaw," he said.
He released her frail body that encased an inner strength. Nella patted his back.
"She'll be okay. You showed yourself to be an honorable man to Nova. She knows you love them kids fierce, too," Nella said.
He went to gas up the truck and picked up snacks for the road at around two-thirty. Edisto Island looked glorious in the early fall, and he took himself to the beach to gaze at the eastern shore one more time before they departed for good. He kicked off his shoes and socks and dipped his toes in, letting the Atlantic Ocean chill rejuvenate his tired feet. Lifting and packing things for Nova, while also running around playing with Van-Van, had his dogs howling. He plopped his backside on the sand with the tall sea oat plants against his back and surveyed the horizon where the sky touched the impossibly green ocean.
He closed his eyes and let the ocean breeze kiss his eyelids.
"GodâŚthank you. Thank you for bringing Nova into my life with Van-Van. Thank you for allowing us to have Terrina. Please watch over us as we make this journey to my family in Louisiana. Grant me the strength and fortitude to be the best man and father I can be for NovaâŚ"
He listened to the sound of the surf and the squawk of a seabird after he finished his prayer. The sharp scent of the ocean refreshed him, and he took a deep inhale. Opening his eyes again, he stood and wandered slowly back to his truck as the shadows of early evening enveloped him.
At Mawmaw's, he pulled his truck into the driveway. He'd connect to the U-Haul trailer in the morning. Craning his head to look up at the house, he noticed the front room lights weren't on. He guessed Nova went to bed early to rest with the children. Nella's car was on the street and she was probably watching her shows in her room. He clicked his key fob, locking the truck. Stretching his arms, he knew Terrina would be antsy to eat. He hoped there was a bottle in the fridge he could heat so that Nova could rest. Another strong breeze blew across his face.
Heading for the stairs, the sound of glass breaking steered him toward the carport. Shattered pieces of blue bottle glass sat under the bottle tree. A gust of wind shook a branch so hard that another bottle fell and broke, glass fragments shooting toward the cement driveway.
The back of the U-Haul trailer caught his eye.
It was partially open.
He lifted the handle to check if anything had been stolen. Nope. The trailer remained packed to the gills. He slammed the roll-up door back down and locked it with the key still stuck inside the lock. That's when he glimpsed something shiny jammed against the right back tire and picked it up. Nova's cell phone with a shattered screen. He glanced around the rest of the driveway, using a flashlight app on his smartphone. Drops of blood led to the edge of the property where he found Nella crumpled in a heap.
"Nella!"
Terry dropped to his knees and touched her neck. She was alive, just knocked out cold.
"NellaâŚNellaâŚ"
Nella moaned with groggy energy. She came to and stared at Terry with unfocused eyes.
"JordonâŚ" she mumbled.
"Jordon did this to you?"
She nodded and grabbed his arm.
"He walked up on us. Nova tried to call the policeâŚhe knocked her phone out of her hand and grabbed Van-Van. HeâŚpulled out a gunâŚshe was holding Terrina, and he threatened herâŚordered her to get in his car. I tried to stop him, and he⌠hit me with the gun. He took them. "
"How long ago did he take them?"
Nella sat up and touched the back of her head where she bled.
"Maybe thirtyâŚforty minutes ago."
Terry quelled the panic rising in his chest.
"Is there any place you can think of where he would take them other than his family members?"
Nella shook her head.
"Tell me exactly what he said."
"He told Nova she would never leave him. Her or the babies. She pleaded for him to let the children go and just take her, but he wanted them all. TerryâŚhe had this look in his eyes about Terrina. He said she was the reason their family broke upâŚI think he's going to do something to her to get back at you."
"I need you to wait on calling the police, okay? Can you do that?"
"Yeah."
Nella stood on wobbly legs. He tried calling Jordan's number and heard a ringing sound out near the street. Holding his cell to his ear, he followed the rings and found Jordan's phone near the curb.
"Fuck!" he shouted.
Nella glanced at Nova's phone in his hand and snapped her fingers.
"WaitâŚwait! Nova's Airtags!" Nella shouted.
She snatched Nova's phone from his hand. The touchscreen still worked.
"She put one in Terrina's car seat. Van-Van should have one stuck in his little zipper pocket on his jeans. She started putting them on the kids as a precaution when she dropped them off at Boppie's house, in case she let Jordan take them somewhere without being watched. She stopped letting them see Terrina, but probably left the tags on them."
Nella swiped the phone and found the Airtag app on Nova's phone.
"See, there they are! They're still on the island."
Terry shook his hands with enthused encouragement and kissed Nella on the forehead.
"Thank you, thank you!"
He grabbed Nova's phone and ran to his truck. The Airtag stopped near an area by the Edisto River. He held the phone up to Nella's face.
"Is there any place by the river that Jordan would possibly go?"
"He never lived here year round, but his family spent summers with us on special occasions."
Precious time ticked on.
"Think, NellaâŚthink!"
Nella's eyes watered, and her lips poked out in concentration.
"The Edisto RiverâŚour families used to go fishing there. I never went because I don't like to fish or camp out. They'd rent a treehouse cabin."
"Call Titus or Pauletta and ask them where, and call me on my phone afterward! Do not tell them what's happening or they'll call the police and make things worse. Jordan is dangerous, and he's also a trained sniper."
Terry tore off in his truck and stuck Nova's phone in the holder attached to his dash. He followed Terrina's Airtag timestamps on the phone. Thank God there were other Apple devices nearby to help track the data.
His cell rang. Nella.
"Terry, Titus said they used to rent the cabins at a place called The Edisto Treehouse Retreat. They usually stayed close by the river to launch their paddle boats."
"Got it, I'm headed there. Give me an hour's head start before you call the cops."
He pulled over to switch his phone onto the dash so he could save the battery life of Nova's phone. Punching in the name of the rental cabins, he jetted there on a wing and a prayer. Jordan sought seclusion and privacy. The river was a good place to hold Nova and the children captive without attracting attention.
Since he was only thirty to forty minutes behind Jordan, he prayed to reach them before anything turned grave. He ventured into the more natural parts of Edisto and worried about losing a signal out in the wild. The temperature had dropped, too. Nova had worn a long sleeve shirt and a jean skirt. Terrina only had on a pink cotton onesie and Van-Van wore little jeans and a T-shirt.
"Don't do anything fucking stupid, Jordan," Terry mumbled to himself.

Danny X Cass Part 4
They arrive at the pantry in just a moment. Danny, Cass and the rest of the batfam go to take their seat while Clark and Diana go to make some teas and snacks. Danny and Cass sit beside each other with the other side of Cass being Spoiler. Opposite of Danny is Bruce while beside him are Nightwing and Robin. Red Robin takes a chair and sits right behind Batman while still taping on his wrist computer.
Batman, Nightwing and Robin keep staring at Danny while Clark and Diana prepare the snacks and teas but Danny doesn't look nervous at all. As much as Danny wants to take all of them seriously, he really can't when he knows what he knows.
A moment later Clark and Diana come with 2 trays of snacks and teas and put them on the table. They take a chair each and sit near the end of the table. Clark and Diana can feel the intense glares from 3 bats. Both of them glance at the target in question and they can see that the guy takes the glare with stride. It's like the person that is being glared at is someone else.
Suddenly, a loud ding sounded in the room. Danny takes out his phone and a grin spreads on his face. Danny shows the screen to Cass and she also releases a few giggles. Feeling the glares becoming more intense, Danny puts his phone on the table and lets everyone see what he is seeing.
On his phone is a selfie of Dan holding a bloodied Darkseid in one hand with a caption "Can't even give out a decent fight. Even Boxy is a better sparring partner than him." Another message entered Danny's phone and there is a selfie of Elle with Danny's clone bitch slapping Trigon in the background. "This place is so cool. You gotta bring me here to play more." Danny shows the rest of the heroes that the deed is done and they finally relax. Clark stands up from his table and goes back to the other room to inform the other heroes that the threat had already been taken care of.
Danny then puts back his phone and continues drinking his tea. Heh. They might think that they are being scary but they don't even know even now Danny is still flirting with Cass. That's one of the benefits of being able to read the opponent's body language and ghost speak. To others holding hands is just holding hands but to them, holding hands can be used to convey all of your emotions.
They stay like that for a while longer until Clark returns from the other room. Seeing Clark fully seated, Bruce finally speaks.
"Who are you really?" Bruce asks with the most intimidating voice he can use.
"Didn't I say? I'm Danny Phantom. High King of Infinite Realm etc etc. I have a lot of titles but the high King one is the only important one." Danny says carelessly.
"How old are you?" Bruce asks.
"20"
"Impossible." Red Robin suddenly interjects.
"Why is it impossible?" Danny looks curiously at him. He genuinely doesn't know why it is impossible.
"There are records of you all across time all the way back to the ancient human. There are even traces of you in multiple pantheons." Red Robin says.
"Oh, you mean that. Duh, it's easy. I time travel. It's quite easy to time travel when your pops is the master of time." Danny says.
"But didn't you say Clockwork hates when someone messes with time?" Superman asks.
"If there is a time traveler that messes with the timeline, who do you think will deal with the guy? It certainly ain't that old man. He sends me to deal with the time traveler/magician who are trying to change the timeline." Danny says.
"Is Clockwork your father then?" Diana asks.
"Adopted parents. He is my parents/mentor for anything ghost related. Well actually for most things related except personal human problems." Danny says.
"How long have you known Black Bat?" Nightwing asks. Finally the real question.
"Wait, I think 10 years now. You are 21 right Cass? I remember when I first met her she was being chased down by this weird ninja. After I shot a few of them down with my Fenton Taser, Cass handled the rest of them. She then passed out from exhaustion and I brought her to my secret hideout (A cave Danny found just then). After a few days, Cass fully recovered and since then, she and I have been meeting every few months whenever she comes around."
"Also, I know all of your real identity. The phrase 'Dead man tells no tales' is a complete bs by the way. The ghosts really like gossiping. Like that one time I heard a ghost say that he sees Bruce fall into the dumpster because his grappling hook is jammed. Or that one time Dick got catcalled by an old lady."
The bats (except Cass)froze when they hear that Danny knows their secret identity. Bruce sighs and takes off his cowl followed by the rest of the family.
"Do you also know my identity, Danny?" Clark asks.
"Yes, I know you Kal-el. Your parents are very proud of what you have become."
"You met Ma and Pa?"
"Your biological parents."
"You- you've met my parents?" Clark's voice shakes. Danny nods while smiling warmly.
"If you want, I can set up a meeting with your parents. Not for long of course. It's not good for a mortal to be inside the realm for too long. And that invitation extends to all of you."
Most of them stilled at that invitation.

Okay, I read what I can from the epilogue and I just want to put out that I'm not saying I'm right about anything I say here because it's not an official release and I read from fan translations.
ăAlso refer to this post and this one!ă
So, again, I was right about Ozawa meeting Yuji again and they have a little heart to heart.
Talking about snow, what they're doing in the same place, bit about Shibuya, it was cute.
But the ending of it was more open ended (which isn't something I hate to be honest).
Before anyone goes "Oh, they pulled a MHA 431, it's so homophobic", I get that it might feel that way but... in no way did Yuji express anything romantic to Ozawa, let alone any kind of feelings for her. Like, let's take a step back FOR ONCE and analyze what's up here. Here, take my hand. Come on and follow along with me.
If anything, from his side, he thinks she is a cool girl. However, he still barely knows her and I doubt him if confessed to he would be like "Oh, I like you like that, too, Ozawa! Let's date!" She's, at best, an acquaintance. Someone in passing, someone he did go to middle school with.
So, her epilogue isn't even homophobic. At best, it's once again just Ozawa being all starry eyed over Yuji who doesn't know how she feels.
It's actually sad when you think about it.
In no way is her feelings are mutual. If Yuko was looking for love, Yuji may not be that person for it. I get it, sometimes you'll have feelings for the one person who was nice to you, but that doesn't mean it will be the only person.
Yuko being too busy hung up on Yuji may have missed a person who likes in the way she likes Yuji. What if there was someone else who did pay attention to the way she writes? Who did meet her at some point and got to know her and liked her for who she was?
And if not that, Yuko should have took Yuji's words to heart and realized how great she is and learn to love herself a little more.
The thing about the middle school flashback I feel, isn't just a flashback about her, but also to show the kind of person he is.
It shows that he's attentive and thoughtful. But also that his actions tend to be swayed by other people, even forcefully. Which happens often for Yuji. He told those boys he didn't like anybody and when asked again if he had to choose, he choose someone who he thought was a neat person. Those boys forced Yuji to give another answer despite him saying he didn't like anybody the first time.
If anything, that flashback serves as a more gentle example of who Yuji contrasting to Rin, another person who knew Yuji when he was a middle schooler (Rin is actually older than Yuji). In Rin's flashback, we see Yuji defend a kid that was being picked on.
Yuji was being attentive, he didn't ignore a kid being bullied. He stepped up and told them to leave him alone and when they didn't and decided to charge at Yuji, he was then forced to act violently. In turn, Rin was left with the impression he had of Yuji, just as Yuko was.
Bringing up the snow bit, it was cute. I liked it! Yuji being compared to snow. But this is not the first time someone has came across Yuji and thought of snow.
What was the incident they bring up this chapter? The Shibuya Incident, right. And who did Yuji have to fight and had cowering by the end of it? Mahito, yes, him. And other than a wolf, what else did Mahito imagine when he became fearful of Yuji? SNOW!
So like with Rin, Mahito's perception of Yuji is opposite of Yuko's. She got to experience a gentle side which she admires. Rin and Mahito got his violent side, which they feared.
With all that being said, even with this epilogue ending the way it did, it doesn't smell "canon" to me. Especially, on Yuji's end of things.
Yuji may have a type of girl he likes, but he is also someone who doesn't express romantic interest in anybody.
While this is Yuko's epilogue, I do feel like she is also just another character to showcase the kind of person Yuji can be. She being present shows a gentle side of him while characters like Rin and Mahito shows his violent side.
And no, again, I don't think this means they're canon. So I beg, certain shippers who like the same ship I do, don't jump on Yuko, Yuji or Akutami for thinking this is some homophobic chapter when the romance between a girl and a boy here once again went nowhere.
It really didn't feel like Akutami-sensei was really trying to make them canon. And given the track record of F/M ships in this series? Yeah... no...
#i beg folks to sometimes not jump to conclusions especially when the full chapters aren't even out yet#it's why i don't think people should take my word as final#it's really just left up to interpretation but at the same time let's look at the full picture here#just like with other mha shippers i won't name here i don't think that ship is a definite romantic win i don't#just ship however you want though#like itafushi shippers as a itafushi shipper myself I'm taking you by the hand#and telling you to not do what bkdk shippers did#just continue to ship itafushi#there are times even now people will ship characters who don't even interact#don't let that stop you#just kiya's thoughts#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#jjk epilogues#jjk epilogue#jjk manga spoilers#jjk spoilers#itadori yuji#yuji itadori#itadori yuuji#yuuji itadori#ozawa yuko#yuko ozawa#itafushi#fushiita

your first (goofy) christmas with bf!park jisung. fem!reader. fluff.
"wait- just a moment!"
your boyfriend had invited you to his apartment for a christmas gathering along with the other boys, but here you were stuck outside the front door, freezing your ass off with a bag full of gifts because jeno just wouldn't let you enter, and you knew better than to try to push your way past his strong build. still, you tried to crane your neck to peek past jeno's shoulder, but all you could see was a bunch of men, donned in ugly christmas sweaters, surrounding something, whispering something you couldn't catch at all. jeno turned his head around as the boys mouthed something to him, before he finally stepped away from the door frame.
"close your eyes, y/n."
"what-"
two hands (whom you assumed were jeno's) clamped over your eyes before you could protest as you waddled into the living room, almost tripping before someone else managed to catch you. you muttered curses under your breath, mainly directed at your boyfriend's absence. your feet kicked a box before your the hands over your eyes were finally removed. you blinked at the bright lights, your eyes adjusting to find yourself in front of a christmas tree, and in front of a gigantic present box, a box that stood tall enough at your waist level and way too wide to be placed under the tree. you tilted your head in confusion, and looked around at the six giggly boys who stood around you, your boyfriend still no where to be found.
"open it."
you eyed haechan, who was chuckling uncontrollably with his head buried in renjun's shoulder.
it was obvious, really, what they were giggling and chuckling about. it wasn't hard to connect the dots between your boyfriend's absence, their laughter, and the comically large gift box. large enough to fit a person. still, with a suppressed grin, you untied the bow on the top of the box and pulled the lid off.
"surprise!" jisung jumped up with his hands out like a jack in the box toy, with strings of colourful LED lights twinkling from his neck, a synthetic white beard stuck on his face and a santa hat threatening to fall off his head.
the silence was embarrassingly deafening, and it was clear from the snorts from the boys and the way jisung hid his face in his hands that this was not his idea at all, but all you could do was grin dumbly at how cute your boyfriend was, trying to hide from his own girlfriend as if she hadn't seen worse.
"I told you this was stupid-"
you didn't let him finish. you pulled his hands away from his face and yanked him closer to you, causing him to stumble as your lips met, soft and plush as his hyungs whistled around you and someone hollered "I told you this would work!". you pulled away to examine his faux bearded face, stifling a laugh at it, and the way his boba eyes stared at you, wide and in love.
"merry christmas, my stupid santa." you poked at his beard as he puffed his cheeks out in response.
and despite how ridiculous he looked this christmas, he knew he would do it all over again, for the pretty grin on your face and the sound of your stifled snorts. sigh, guess hes gonna need his hyungs help next christmas again.
a/n: this is so stupid I can't decide if I love it or hate it. anyway blessed christmas everyone! đ love each and everyone of you

Pack Wolf X Reader who doesn't reciprocate his feelings headcanons.
Summary: In their wanderings, they find their imprint as soon as they see her for the first time; However, she doesn't seem to feel the same way.
ââââââ⧠𦢠â§ââââââ
Sam Uley:
Seeing you for the first time, he would have almost involuntarily gotten down on his knees if it hadn't been that they were in a public place and you were accompanied. It was something unique, something he didn't expect, but there you were, and Sam felt the need to get close to you no matter what. Him approaching you to talk about whatever as an excuse to get to know you wasn't rough enough; he needed to see you again.
As soon as he brought up any kind of topic he noticed how incredibly kind you were when you addressed him, but he also noticed how you didn't even seem to be feel the same. There was no spark in your eyes, no accelerated breathing, no special something that seemed to unite you. You were supposed to be soulmates, weren't you? You were supposed to be perfect for each other, so why as time went on did you seem to treat him like any other normal person? Why wasn't there "that" something in your eyes when you looked at him? Sam had imprinted himself on you, he knew it, everyone knew it, but they also seemed to notice his constant attempts to be closer to you, his constant silent pain.
You treated him well of course, you were friendly to everyone on the reservation, you were sweet to Sam more than he could ask for, but he still didnât seem to be strong enough with his advances for you to see him the way he was expected. Even after explaining his secret and about the imprint, you seemed to try to feel a connection with him; you spent time by his side, you did everything you could, but the feeling just didnât seem to be there. No matter how hard you tried you couldnât feel the connection and as time went on you began to wear yourself out and try to find something that just wasnât there. Finally explaining to him that you couldnât go on and giving him a clear rejection.
Even though your rejection seemed to hurt him much more than expected, he decided to suffer in silence, prioritizing your feelings over his. Sam would become understanding and calm, not losing his temper, even though he knew how painful it would be, knowing that imprinting shouldn't be forced. Though promising that if only you wanted him, he would be there for you, a good friend or brother, even a companion. Imprinting would involve prioritizing your well-being above all else, so Sam would do everything he could to make sure you were happy and safe, even if that meant keeping his distance so as not to make you uncomfortable.
Though Sam would try to be understanding, the pain he felt was indescribable. Even though you hadn't cut him out of your life completely, just being so far away from you would be hard to handle, starting to feel internal conflict due to the intensity of the imprint itself, having moments where it's hard for him to deal with the lack of reciprocity, seeking support in his pack or those closest to him to handle his emotions.
If you allowed them to stay close, even without a romantic bond, Sam would try to be a reliable friend, being there for you when you needed it, a shoulder to cry on, someone to tell your problems to; whatever you wanted, he would do it. Acting quite mature and empathetic, focusing on what's best for you, even if it meant giving up his own feelings.
Paul Lahote:
Being someone with an explosive temper, Paul probably wouldn't handle rejection well. Trying to get close to you intensely as soon as he meets you, mistaking your lack of reciprocation for shyness or fear towards him, as if you weren't looking at him confused enough since you barely know him and he already seemed to know you all your life. Even though you treated him friendly, he could immediately tell that there didn't seem to be that emotion in your chest upon meeting him, leading to frustration with the pack, following him on the way home, trying to reassure him and explain to him that it would take some time and you would finally agree. It didn't.
Despite his frustration, the instinct to protect you would be greater, as seeing you every few days wouldn't be enough to calm him down, frequently showing up to make sure you were okay, even without you asking, which could seem invasive.
Over time, Paul would have several changes in attitude; The great irritability would be clear to everyone in the pack, and the growing, unstoppable pain would lead him to have fits of rage at anyone who crossed his path, though he would avoid taking it out on you, deciding to walk away, which only made it worse by being away from you. He would feel hurt and disoriented, not being able to understand how it was possible that you didnât feel the same; you were made for each other, he had imprinted on you. Why was nothing happening? Why was it different with you when you were supposed to be the perfect match for each other?
You tried, you seemed to try many times, more than you could imagine, wishing you could feel the same so that both of your suffering would end, but it wasnât like that; you couldnât manage to feel anything and you couldnât force yourself any further.
Although Paul was unconditionally devoted to you because of the imprint, he would also begin to realize that forcing your feelings was not only unfair to you, but painful to both of you. Trying to stay away and trying to figure out how to handle the situation. Even though Paul was stubborn, he wasn't completely insensitive. His loyalty to the pack and its values would drive him to show respect for your feelings and be a silent support for you. Understanding that imprinting didn't mean control or obligation for you, he would start to act more understanding and respectful, prioritizing what you wanted. Still, he couldn't help but care about you, protecting you whether silently or not from any danger, be it supernatural or human, trying to do so discreetly so as not to make you uncomfortable.
With time and the help of Sam or the other pack members, Paul could accept that their bond cannot be forced. Choosing to be close to you as a friend or support in your life if you so desired, and if so, he would remain as someone protective and loyal, focusing on your well-being and happiness. Although rejection would not be easy for Paul, as he would feel a void in not being able to live the fullness he expected from imprinting, he would learn to accept it with resignation and maturity and less impulsiveness. Even without reciprocation, Paul would continue to feel a connection and be willing to do or be whatever you wanted without expecting anything in return.
Embry Call:
He had always heard about the stories of imprinting and its importance; most of his companions in the pack already had their imprints, although he understood it, he never really understood it, until he met you. It was a very strong pass on the ball, making his companions ask him to go get it, being the closest, and at the edge of the water there was you, who quickly grabbed the ball that was hitting your feet to give it to its owner.
The first contact was different, very different from what Embry had imagined; everything seemed to stop after seeing you, the waves of the sea and the noise of his companions playing seemed far away and took a backseat; everything was reduced only to you. Approaching somewhat nervously, not knowing how to act, he managed to have a brief chat with you, internally hoping that you would agree to see him again. Yes, of course he had noticed your great lack of emotion or bright eyes; It wasn't how his companions had told him in their own experiences, but Embry wanted to believe that maybe it was different with you, maybe it would take a little longer.
Although he approached it with patience and understanding, he would still be confused after not noticing any change in his advances towards you without achieving anything, trusting more than he should, with a silent hope that, with time, you could come to feel something for him. However, he would never act selfishly to force this possibility.
Embry would begin to experience an internal struggle during the following days. Sure, he felt a deep and unbreakable connection towards you, but, on the other hand, the lack of reciprocity on your part would cause him emotional pain. Although he would not be upset with anyone, much less with you, the feeling would squeeze his chest tightly. At those times he would try to seek help from the pack, trying to understand and deal with his pain, some of them even trying to advise him or encourage him to focus on your needs instead of his feelings so he wouldn't suffer so much.
In the face of your rejection, Embry would react immediately; the pain was inevitable, but the imprinting would lead him to accept this reality, putting his personal feelings on the back burner. Even if you didn't feel anything towards him, Embry would dedicate his life to protecting and supporting you, your well-being being his priority. Behaving gently, making sure not to cross boundaries that would make you feel uncomfortable. Being close to you when you needed him, acting as a calm and reliable guardian. He would try to establish a friendly relationship with you if you wanted it. Trying to understand your interests, your passions and the things that made you happy, adapting to your needs. Probably looking to spend time with you casually, so that the pain of separation in the bond that united you didn't hurt him too much, but at the same time he would try not to suffocate or overwhelm you. Trying to maintain a fun and relaxed attitude to make you feel comfortable and maintain a good atmosphere.
If you were to express at any point that you needed space or didn't want a close relationship, he would accept it, even though it would inevitably hurt him. Embry would completely respect your wishes and feelings, as well as your boundaries. Imprinting would guide him to be patient and understanding, willing to wait or just accept whatever you decided. Even if you didn't feel the same way, it would be hard for Embry to stay completely away because of the bond. Trying to be close in indirect ways, helping you without you realizing it, or making sure you were safe.
Although Embry would accept anything you asked him to be or do, he would act with great devotion, dealing with his own pain with dignity, striving to be positive in your life. The situation would be somewhat complicated and painful, but his character would allow him to find ways to cope with it without ceasing to be faithful to the bond that has been created, putting your happiness and well-being above all, only wishing the best for you, even if that meant seeing you with another person.
Quil Ateara:
At first, he might not fully understand why he was attracted to someone in particular, as it wouldnât be something that happened consciously, but rather something instinctive. Seeing you for the first time only makes him feel confused and disoriented; he knows that he is something strong, something unique, needing to be closer to you.
His protective and caring nature would come to the fore, making him inclined to do everything he could to get closer to you and interact in some way. His pack mates would explain this to him as the poor boy seemed to still be just as confused, though unable to answer their questions as to why you didnât seem as interested or why you didnât seem to view him with the same affection and devotion as he had when they had first met; perhaps Sam would step in explaining that it would all be a matter of time.
While Quil would be understanding because of their bond, he would quickly become aware that you didnât feel the same way. He could tell just by looking at you; When he arrived, There wasn't that emotion when I saw it, even if it had only been a few hours since you'd seen each other, noticing your gestures and your efforts to try to find something that didn't seem to be there, that tiredness of continuing to try something you couldn't force and that sudden distance.
This initial rejection could make him feel hurt, even if your actions weren't intentional. The pack members would be a constant support for him, but he would experience the pain internally. The impression is a powerful thing; this would make Quil put aside his regrets and feelings in order to understand you, beginning to respect your wishes and not force a relationship; however, his emotions would still be intense. He would become more attentive and protective, trying to help you in any way he could, trying to gain your trust without rushing things. He would show himself as a close friend or even a brother, doing things you liked, showing a more relaxed part of himself so you wouldn't feel pressured or uncomfortable. His desire to take care of you might be something that expresses itself in less obvious ways, such as making sure you're okay in everyday situations or trying to make you feel special.
If you were to continue to reject any attempts at closeness, whether romantic or emotional, Quil could go through severe pain due to imprinting. His nature would push him to fight for you in whatever ways necessary to even have some sort of relationship with you, even if it was minimal, but his respect for your own boundaries would keep him in check. Acceptance would be difficult, but over time, Quil could learn to live with the deep connection he feels towards you, without trying to pressure you. Making it clear to you that he would be there for you if you wanted it, like a brother or a friend, taking your health and happiness as a priority, and if you were to continue not wanting any interaction with him then Quil would accept it, prudently staying away, even trying to take care of you silently, since the bond would not let him go away completely.
Although he would approach the subject with enough maturity and patience, the pain would still be there and would not go away completely, affected by the events and why it had not worked out as expected with him regarding the imprint. He would leave room for you to make your own decisions without interfering and accepting what you wanted, but even deep down wishing that one day you could feel the same as he felt for you.
Jared Cameron:
He's confused. The imprint was supposed to be an unbreakable and deep bond, something that makes you feel like the person you're imprinted with is the only one who can fulfill your deepest needs, just as the other person should feel, in a way, the same, practically incomplete if the other wasn't there. What had gone wrong? You make him feel a great desire to protect and care for you, but in the face of this the reality check comes faster than he could prevent, realizing that you don't actually share the same feeling.
His astonishment was inexplicable, since it was incredible how in one moment he was playing with his companions and in the next seconds he saw you and everything seemed to stop. The experience was transformative and overwhelming, but it also came with the weight of understanding that you didn't feel the same. Jared can realize it, perhaps not quickly enough to notice it the first time he sees you, trying to deal with his own feelings in between, but as the days go by and as he gets closer to you, he could tell. He understood it immediately; He couldn't force you to love him on the same level. It seemed to hit him like a bucket of cold water, trying to process it as maturely as he could, but with it came frustration due to the unbreakable connection he felt and the lack of reciprocation from you; it was a constant, throbbing pain that he never imagined feeling.
The imprint bond would make him understand in part that he couldn't rush or force your feelings, just as his own personal integrity would make him understand and cope with it. He would make him respectful of your space, being kind and calm. Adopting a supportive stance, hoping that, in time, you would come to understand and accept the connection between you with or without a relationship in between.
Jared would feel a strong need to protect you due to the imprint. Driving him to be close, more than you would want. Despite his desires to be close to you, Jared would be aware of his limits, avoiding being evasive, but intervening discreetly if you were in danger. Even though the imprint makes him feel like you are his âeverything,â he would understand the need to not be dominant or possessive, given that you donât share the same feelings. Even though your rejection was already expected by him, when it comes, it seems harder to digest than he had imagined. Knowing that this was what you wanted, Jared would respect it by putting aside his thoughts and feelings to please you, trying to balance his desire to be close to you with the need to give you space and time to process what was happening.
Over time Jared would learn not to idealize this in a destructive way, even though the bond makes him think that you are the person he is meant to be with, he also understands that nothing can be forced. And even if you werenât ready to feel the same or directly didnât want anything with him, Jared wouldnât pressure you, but he wouldnât stop being there, waiting patiently.
Seth Clearwater:
When he first saw you, the world seemed to stop. The connection was instant and overwhelming; the imprint completely transformed him. Of course, he had heard of his pack mates and often saw them with their mates, but this seemed to be something much more intense than Seth could have imagined. You become the center of his universe, not just as a potential mate, but as someone to protect and care for no matter the consequences. The intensity of the feeling overwhelms him, but also fills him with hope and happiness.
Being sweet and genuine, Seth would not force his presence in your life, but would instead seek to approach you in a natural way. Starting with a few casual one-liners about the day, following it up with a few topics that led him to ask for your name, as well as his presence and humor, would have him confidently asking you to see him again. The following days he would show his kinder and more generous side: helping you with small things, making you laugh and spending time by your side as someone unconditional.
Over time, Seth would notice that, although you appreciated him and enjoyed his company, you showed no signs of feeling something deeper. Perhaps he would have noticed it much earlier, but he wanted to lie to himself believing that it was just a matter of time. Although his advances continued to be noticeable, you seemed to no longer enjoy the more intimate approach, which led you to confess that your feelings were not the same as those he had for you. This would be devastating for Seth, since the imprint was not something he could control or diminish. Despite this, Seth would not allow himself to blame or pressure you, understanding that everything should be free and mutual.
He would begin to go through an internal process of sadness and acceptance; his innate kindness would keep him focused on what was best for you. Although it would be painful for him to observe how you did not feel the same, he would commit to staying in your life in the way you wanted. In private he would lean on the pack, who comforted him and gave him advice, especially Leah, who would understand his pain due to her own experiences, helping him deal with the emotional burden.
Seth would continue to be a part of your life if you wanted him to be, and if not, then he would accept it with great internal pain, but accepting of your wishes, watching over you from the shadows. He would never impose his feelings on you or expect you to reciprocate, seeking the best for you. And if you wanted to cut contact completely, then Seth would accept it without complaint no matter how much pain it caused him, putting your feelings before anything else.
Despite the pain, Seth would maintain his hopeful nature by looking for ways to adapt, learning to handle his unrequited feelings and channeling them into something positive. He would dedicate himself to protecting you from a distance or focusing on strengthening relationships with his family and pack. Over time he could learn to balance his imprint with his own need to move on, although the connection would never completely disappear.
Jacob Black:
He had always found the subject of imprinting strange and even aberrant; seeing how his companions seemed to abandon themselves so that someone else could practically take them as if they were their own to do with as they pleased was simply something Jacob didn't seem to or wanted to understand. Everything changed when he saw you; he now understood what everyone was talking about. He feels the powerful pull of imprinting, an unbreakable bond that reconfigures his world around you. His senses sharpen, his heart beats hard, and the need to be close to you becomes overwhelming. In that instant you become his absolute priority, overriding any other connection or concern.
Jacob would look for ways to approach you naturally, using his charisma and sense of humor as tools to gain your trust. He would try to become a close and constant friend in your life, willing to listen to you, support you, and protect you from any danger, even if you weren't aware of the extent of his commitment.
Over time, Jacob would probably manage to become an important figure in your life. He would accompany you in your everyday problems, offering you solutions or simply his presence. His actions, driven by imprinting, would be selfless and focused on your well-being. However, as the relationship progresses, he begins to notice that although you appreciate him and feel comfortable, you show no signs of developing feelings towards him. Although you try hard to give and surrender to him, you know that you cannot match his commitment; despite your constant attempts, you just donât succeed.
Once you confess to Jacob and give him the clear rejection, he would experience an emotional storm. His pain would not come from the rejection itself, but from the inability to fulfill what he perceives as his purpose: to make you happy. It would make him rethink and ask himself if he is doing something wrong or if he is meant to live with those one-sided feelings. Even though he wants you to see him the same way, he wouldnât try to pressure or manipulate you due to imprinting forcing him to prioritize your desires and well-being over his own. Even though you didnât feel the same way, Jacob wouldnât be able to emotionally detach himself. He would continue to care for you, making sure you were safe. He would try to find comfort in friendship, focusing on being a support in your life without expecting anything in return.
If you wished instead to have no relationship with him at all, wanting to cut off contact, even though he would feel deeply hurt, Jacob would respect your decision. Having to fight his own instincts to not constantly seek you out, even going so far as to feel great constant pain and guilt, would lead him to isolate himself from the pack and his friends, constantly morphing to release pent-up tension and emotions, feeling unable to explain his suffering or find comfort.
Even though others in the pack couldnât fully understand the pain of an unrequited imprint, they would offer comfort and support; Even Sam would try to guide him to handle his feelings so that the bond wouldn't be so painful.
Jacob would learn to deal with frustration and pain, taking comfort in secretly caring for you if you didn't want him around, and if that wasn't it, then he would settle for being a good friend in your life. Despite the lack of reciprocity, the bond wouldn't fade. The imprint is eternal, and although the pain might soften with time, he would always feel a special connection to you.

REGULUS BLACK
Regulus is heartbroken when James and Lily starts dating.
He doesn't realise why.
And then Remus is talking about Sirius, and saying similar things to what's in his head. "He makes me feel loved, and safe, and wanted. The way he laughs, the way he talks. That's why I love him." And that's when Regulus realises. Oh shit, maybe I love him. The way he smiles, the way he laughs, the way James is the sun to his sky.
James is oblivious for a while.
But then Lily realises she doesn't love James the way she feels like she should.
James and Lily break up, stay friends, and James realises he loves Regulus. The way he smiles, when James gets his attention, or he reads a book that he loves. The quietness. The way he bursts out with his opinions if he feels strongly about something. Regulus finally loving the person who he wants to, openly.
They go up to the Astronomy tower each Sunday, just talking. Each Sunday turns into twice a week. Twice a week into every other day. Every other day into every day. And they're so happy. And Sirius is all "You're dating my baby brother!" and "Brotherfucker." and "Ugh.", but inside he's so happy to see Regulus loving someone openly and fully. And Remus supports the both of them, and so does Peter, and Lily, and Dorcas, and Marlene.
Then Walburga and Orion make Regulus get the Dark Mark.
He's screaming, crying, begging them not to. "Please Mom, please Dad, I can't lose this." Throwing himself in front of them, trying to run away.
Him eventually realising: It doesn't work.
So he gets the Mark. Stays silent as the needle punctures his flesh over and over again.
And then runs to Hogwarts.
Regulus sobbing in the common room of Slytherin, arm swollen and bleeding as he tries to rip the ink out of his skin with his nails, held by an equally sad Evan and Barty.
Sobbing because he's going to lose his brother again, going to lose his friends, his boyfriend, because of ink that he didn't want.
Him trying to grab a knife, scissors. Evan and Barty have to restrain him and watch him constantly, making sure he doesn't carve out flesh from his bones.
So the Dark Mark is permanent.
And Regulus would rather see his boyfriend, the love of his life, not know him, rather than see James hate him for what he didn't want to become.
So he goes to the Astronomy tower after having ignored James for weeks. James didn't know why.
And he tells him. "I got the Mark." And shows him his arm.
And James' eyes widen.
And then - "Wait Reg-"
Regulus sobbing out one word, doubled over in pain, wishing he could go to James. One word.
"Obliviate."
And Regulus erases all of James' memories of him, he's powerful and precise enough to.
And James leaves the tower, confused as to why he went up there in the first place.
And Regulus is sobbing, tears running down his face, hair messed up, clutching at the railing of the tower, wishing he could get the mark away, would do anything. Anything to ease the pain.
He climbs onto the rail. Decides life isn't really worth living anymore, not without his sun. Evan and Barty see him, and run for him, and barely manage to catch him in time.
He makes three more attempts before realising he can't.
So he runs.
Runs so he doesn't have to see that James and Lily get back together, happy and oblivious. Lily's confused as to what happened to Regulus. Regulus who disappeared. Runs so he doesn't have to face Sirius, his disappointment and anger. Runs so Remus can't find him, his kind words and gentleness would make him unravel. Runs so none of his friends can follow. Barty and Evan search for a long time. But they never find him.
James is 18 when Regulus leaves. He's 17. Regulus dies the same year. Trying to make a difference. Regretting that he didn't earlier.
And as he lies on the cold hard ground of the island, Kreacher beside him, holding his stomach in pain from the liquid, but the Horcrux destroyed, he thinks. Of James. Of his smile. Of his laugh. Of his kisses. The way he lit up Regulus' world, because he was the sun to Regulus' sky, because Regulus needed James to be bright.
And he thinks. I'm sorry. He's left a note.
But he doesn't expect James to find it. Ever.
Regulus is 17 when he dies.
And he wishes that he had longer.
But even the brightest stars all fade.

I think when Steve gets Vecna'd, Eddie adds together what he knows about the situation and comes to a logical conclusion. To him at least. He knows that Steve came here asking for heavy drugs and high quantities. He knows that Steve was sounding a hell of a lot like 'sleep' meant something worse.
He knows that Steve is X, and that means all of the horrible things that Eddie knows X thinks about himself, the guy in front of him thinks that too. He knows that Steve, ever since the letters stopped, has been upsetting the freshmen by being distant and cold.
The only assumption he can come up with is that Steve already took something, and it's hit. Or it's causing a reaction. Or its a bad trip.
He has no hesitation about touching him, immediately checks his breathing and his heart rate. It sorta, kinda seems like an overdose, a little bit could be an allergic reaction, but Steve is trembling like he's scared, and his body is stiff. Those explanations don't make perfect sense, so he watches for something that would mean it IS medical, and heads towards his better guess.
Bad Trip.
Steve is high, and is in a bad brain place, and that means he needs to be grounded. Music helps, right? When he was on that bad trip with Rick after his first senior year, Rick put on one of Eddie's tapes, and talked to him. Calm shit. Encouraging shit.
Eddie fully ignores the flickering lights - electrical gets weird in the trailer sometimes - and grabs the mixtape he made for X, and shoves it into his sorta fucky boombox. It's a mix of X's favorite songs, and the ones he mentioned in his own letters. He doesn't know if Steve ever listened to them, but that tape is the only thought he has.
Gets it playing, and grabs hold of Steve's arms. He knows that Steve stopped talking to him. Since Steve knew who he was, and Eddie didn't know who X was, it means Steve probably doesn't care if Eddie wants him to be okay.
Eddie talks about how everyone else feels.
He tells him about how protective Dustin is. How angry Lucas gets anytime anyone says a bad word about Steve. How Eddie has never seen Robin smile so much. How no one judges him for needing to repeat a year. Everyone knows about how hurt he got, and everyone gets it. No one thinks worse of him for it.
He knows his voice isn't exactly calm and soothing, but the longer this insane eye-flutter, non responsive thing goes, the more terrified Eddie is.
"Steve, please, please, it's okay. Just find your way back. try to breathe, try to feel your body, and you'll be okay. I know - I know I've been an asshole to you. I know, okay. But the boys, Robin, shit, fuck, Steve, I need to apologize for shit, so you gotta slow down your breathing. Whatever you're seeing, it isn't real. I promise it's not real, okay? Come back to the real world and I can get you feeling better, I promise. Steve? Steve?"
He doesn't notice at first that Steve is starting to float. He's too focused on his face, the way his eyes are still rolled back. He lets go before he can notice his own hands rising with him. Shits too real, this isn't just a bad trip, he needs help, he needs an ambulance, a cop, anyone that can actually help Steve.
He has the phone in hand, and is about to dial when he turns back, needing to keep looking at him while he begs someone to come fast. He sees Steve in the air.
One step closer, then another. He keeps trying, another whispered sentence or three. But the lights are going crazy, and the music is staticky, the dialtone is screaming, and suddenly flattened to the ceiling, arms pulling slowly to the sides.
Eddie runs.
Leaves the door swung open as he throws himself into his van. His hands are shaking and he's hyperventilating too hard to notice Max Mayfield sprinting across the road, up the stairs and into the trailer. He's pulling away, when Max screams as Steve falls.
He hears the scream, he hears and feels the heavy thump of a weight hitting the ground. He knows what that sound must mean.
Eddie runs.
Behind him with the tape still playing, Max holds onto a terrified Steve, who has trickles of blood on his cheeks, and bruises blooming on his arms.
Steve, alive, cursed, who immediately asks if Eddie is safe.

Tâaâyta says he has to hold himself back, I gotta hold myself back mc has way more self control then me. I would've taken him to the bedroom the second he said I didn't have to break a sweat. He wined and dined so much the first date that no other dates are required we're officially married the second he gets me against the closet door. All this to say I hope there's a part 2 and that you never have trouble sleeping dear writer.
Strangers Part 2
Character: T'a'yta (Male Yautja) x AFAB!Reader
Word Count: 3538
Summary: You meet up with Ze'se to recap everything you've been through with T'a'yta. And boy, is she happy to hear how good the date went. She forces you to text him that moment to go on a second one. T'a'yta agrees. Now, for a second date!
Author Note: I completely agree with you. If any Yautja like him did that do me, I'd propose to him that moment. Thank you so much for the love!
Part 1
Masterlist
Ao3
After your first date with the handsome and endearing Tâaâyta, it was love at first sight. He had your heart already. No, ifs, ands, or buts about it. Tâaâyta had stolen it right out of your chest and posted it on top of a throne. Truly. The Yautja treated you like royalty. You felt it. The first date sealed it in with him.
Of course, as any normal human, you were nervous to go head first. All of your past relationships have clearly failed. Here you were. With what you seemed to be the perfect gentlemen. Tâaâyta even told you to take your time. Heâll wait. The way he said it to wasnât even creepy or disturbing. Heâs letting you take control. To take control of such a beast of a man. You internally swooned at the thought. Your cheeks flushed hot with heat.
That was two days ago. Your friend who set him up with you wanted to know all about it. She had called you the morning afterwards, begging for you to meet up with her. Zeâse is an amazing friend. So, despite work draining you during the day, you agreed to a dinner meet up with her. Which Zeâse happily agreed to said place and threatened harm if you didnât show. That⌠you didnât know if she was joking or not.
With the threat of harm hanging over your head, you threw on some comfy clothes. This was a causal outing. No reason to be all dolled up to see your friend.
Being the person Zeâse is, she invited you to a nice, sit down restaurant with good food. You didnât need to show up in a dress or anything of the sort. That didnât mean you could show up like a slob. Just down the middle. Perfect. Just how you like it. Like always, Zeâse will pay as well. Never has she ever let you pay. Not even when you try to sneak or be quick. Nothing escapes her watchful eyes.
The building is welcoming when you walk in. Itâs not a large food joint but the place is packed with the lobby full of waiting customers. You stroll up to the host stand and greet a man standing there. Poor thing looks a bit overwhelmed and tired.
âHi. Iâm with the Zeâse reservation,â you told him with a gentle, easy going smile. His dark blue eyes dart down to the screen in front of him. He scrolls through a list before his eyes lit up. The host steps out from behind the stand and motions to follow him.
âFollow me.â You comply and shadowed behind him. Further into the restaurant, you see just how full it was. Completely understandable why he has that look in his eyes.
Your eyes look through the crowd and find the only Yautja here. Her towering form sitting on a chair designed for someone of her size. A few people are giving her looks but sheâs not caring one bit. Humans are still getting a feel about having Yautjas around normally. People still arenât fully used to alien walking among them. Youâre not one of those.
Zeâse bright gaze lit up when she spot you through the crowd. The host finishes up the guide and departs with a forced smile. You take your seat across form hers. She is immediately scanning over your neck with observant eyes. You knew what she was looking for, know she would find nothing. To her disappointment.
That sharp gaze of hers narrowed when she came up empty handed. âDid he not impress you?â Zeâse asked with her voice filled with suspicion. You rolled your eyes with a small smirk then looked down at the menu.
âOh my god, Ze,â you groaned. Yautjas. They are so fast about life. Thatâs one thing you find ironic about the different lifestyles. They act like they have no time in the universe. Yet, their life expectancy is over a thousand years old. While humans are the opposite. Acting like weâll live forever and taking all the time in the world with doing stuff. There are outliers in each species. But, thatâs one thing youâve come to notice around Yautjas.
âJust because we didnât fuck doesnât mean I donât like him!â Thankfully, no one was paying attention to the two of you. That wouldâve gained some nasty glances. Specially from the parents nearby.
The suspicion in her gaze doesnât go away. You sighed and bowed your head. âI would think heâd at least give you a temporary mark. You do have his scent on you though.â Zeâse seemed pleased about that though. Yautjas and their scenting. You sneaky sniffed the air but didnât catch anything different.
Content with her findings, Zeâse changes her expression to a softer look. You forced down the heat in your cheeks to disappear before meeting her bright eyes again.
âBut, to let you know, everything went well. He took me out for a dinner date. A wonderful date.â You flicker your gaze down at the menu while talking. âJust like you, he paid for everything and didnât even give me a chance.â Tâaâyta kind of reminds you of Zeâse. Was it customary for Yautjas to pay? Because it wasnât gendered, clearly.
A server popped up and greeted the two of you. âWelcome in guys! My name is Sarah. Today we have a special going on for our soups.â Waters were placed down with a carbonated drink in front of Zeâse. âAre we ready to order? Or do we need some more time?â
Since the two of you have been here far too many times to count, you already knew what you want. You looked up at the server. âWeâre ready, thank you. Could I get the long ham sandwich with a fries on the side? And a Pepsi to drink?â Ever since you tried that sandwich, you fell in love with it. Whoever is back there, working their magic knew what they were doing. It was delicious.
On the other side, Zeâse made her order. The server wrote all of it done before scampering off to other tables. Busy day.
One thing the two of you loved about this pace was it cater to Yautjas as well. One of their cookâs was a Yautja himself. Authentic Yautja Prime food. The first time you tried a dish⌠regret. Zeâse must have known how spicy it was. You were dying.
Once the server left, the two of you fell back into the conversation.
âWe went to my favorite restraint in the city. Tâaâyta had surprised me by renting out the whole place!â Truly, you couldnât believe he had done that for you. âIt was just the two of us.â Then, a certain memory popped up. You tapped your hand on the table.
âOh my god! When I tried to order a simple salad because I didnât want to spend a fortune on a meal, he bought every appetizer on the menu!â From there, you finished up the story. You recapped it to her. All the way to when he took you home and pinned you to the closet door. Zeâse had a grin on her face. âI said I would love to go on another date with him.â
The sparkles in her eyes were scary.
âWhenâs the next date?â she immediately asked afterwards. By now, the food had arrived in the middle of your recap. Busy or not, they knew how to get their food out quickly.
You shook your head. âNot yetâŚâ Zeâse face darkened amidst her eating. âI-I was going to talk to you about it.â Then, you ducked your head down to hide away from her piercing gaze. âPlus, work has been busy!â And it had. Youâve been going to work and coming home just to sleep. Rinse and repeat. You were lucky to get time to have that date with Tâaâyta.
Zeâse growled your name and put down her form gently. âDo not let a good thing such as this slip away. â The tone of her voice was evident with seriousness. She truly didnât want you to lose this opportunity. You sighed again but nodded timidly.
âPull out your phone and text him now.â You jerked your head back before following her demands. The food was temporarily forgotten about. As you typed away at the screen, you would glance at her staring you down. Each time she caught you, your gaze snapped back down to the phone.
Sent. You flipped the device around so she could read it. The message pleased her. All you wrote about how you had a goodtime and enjoyed his company and kindness. You also would like to go on a second date. Not that you believed it was fully needed since heâs given you all the green flags in the world. But you wanted to take it slow and easy. You had to remember, heâs alien with different cultures and views.
By the time you two finished up your meal, it had become dark outside. You stepped out onto the sidewalk first with Zeâse following afterwards. Anyone nearby cleared a large bubble around the two of you.
Strong arms wrapped around your torso and brought you close to her warm body. You returned the gesture in full before pulling back. âIâll let you know about he says, okay?â you promised Zeâse. Not only does she care you and your love life. Zeâse wants to make sure you are safe as well.
She pointed a stern finger at you. âYou better. I know where you live.â Anyone else wouldâve ran for their lives at that threat. Not you. Instead, you laughed and nodded your head.
âI promise.â Then, the two of you spilt ways. You returned home, back to your apartment.
Walking through the front door gave you a reminder of that evening with Tâaâyta. You had almost let him in. Almost.
As you go to se down your stuff on the kitchen counter, your phone buzzed. Instantly, your head started to race.
It was a message from Tâaâyta.
And he wanted to on that second date.
Both of your arms were thrusted into the air with a loud cheer. You danced around the living room before responding back to him. You already had a place in mind on the weekend. Which now couldnât come any sooner. Only three days away and you wanted it right now. You wish you didnât have to work, let alone in the morning.
With the knowledge of having plans for Saturday, the work week decided to drag on at a snails pace. Plus, everything that could go wrong, went wrong. All of the work to fix it fell onto your lap. To the point they tried to make you stay for overtime. You put your foot down and gone to your midday date with Tâaâyta.
A smalls hop was set up inside the mall. Not many notice it. Unless work of mouth got around. Thatâs how most people know about it. A pottery shop youâve been dying to go to. Work either has you too busy or no one wants to go. They have a cute little dragon you were excited to paint on. You had the idea to painting it like Tâaâyta.
Up front, stood Tâaâyta in all of his glory. It was good to finally see him again. It felt too long to go without seeing him after the first time. Tâaâyta had made such an impression to you.
A bright smile plastered onto your face when you first saw his brown scales. He was easy to spot with what little people occupied the shop. You quickened your steps towards him, adding a pep with each step.
Tâaâyta instantly noticed the moment you turned the corner. A watchful eye was kept on you until you reached the shop. His lumbering form turned towards you. You peered up at him with a warm smile.
âIâm so glad you could make it, Tâaâyta. I hope this didnât throw a wrench in any plans.â You didnât know what his schedule was like. If he had any plans outside of this. He wasnât from here and probably had people he wanted to see. Or even a hunt or something on those lines.
His massive head shook side to side. Tâaâyta slowly reached out and brushed his knuckles against your cheek. He most likely felt the heat that boiled your skin alive at this point. âNo, no. I had nothing going on,â he reassured before the two of you walked up to the front counter. A young man waited for the two of you.
âHey, howâs it going?â you decided to start up a casual conversation with him. The man was quick to answer any of your question about this whole process.
It wasnât long until the two of you are at a table. In front of you was the adorable little dragon you craved to get. Tâaâyta got a miniature house. The two of you picked out your colors and put them on a palette. Ready for use. You were beaming at Tâaâyta with sparkles in your eyes. Finally, you were here. Not alone. A future romantic partner. The idea excited you.
âWhat had you been doing between our last date and this one?â you asked and picked up a paint brush, adding color to the tip. Tâaâyta seemed a little out of his element with the arts and crafts. But, he followed your lead.
âIâve been mainly ready to pass the time,â he answered and dipped a brush into some green paint.
Reading?! A man who liked to read? Could he get any better? You were thankful that Zeâse had introduced you to Tâaâyta.
The paint brush in your hand lowered a little to focus on him. âOh? What do you like to read?â The two of you might have different genres but still. To find a guy who enjoys reading is unheard of. Imagine if the two of you combined your libraries together! Fuck, youâre already thinking about the future.
He starts to paint the side of the house with a green. âI have a vast variety for my own library.â There were plenty of stars in your eyes just at that. âCurrently, Iâm readingâŚâ he says something that your human brain couldnât understand. That sounded alien. That only made you realize how much you didnât know about his culture. Only to want to know more about it, about him. âAre you a book worm?â If only he knew.
âA lot. When you come by again, Iâll show you the library in my apartment,â you offered to him. Your paint brushed created brown base along the dragon as the starter. The brown nearly a match to Tâaâytaâs scales. âIâve got so much that it overflows into the living room.â Tâaâyta looks up from his mini house. His blue eyes reflected the sparkles in your own.
âWould you have time later today to show me?â he asked you. âI can show you my own whenever you want. Itâs on my ship.â On my god, his ship? Youâve never stepped foot off of earth before. Would he take you at least into the atmosphere of earth? That⌠that would be a dream come true.
âI would happily show you.â Next, you added the lighter tan color to the dragonâs chest and belly. âI might have a few book you may want. I would be more than happy to let you borrow⌠if you let me borrow some,â you teased him with a sly smile. His mandibles widened into his own smile.
He let his paint brush stop for a moment. âName a time. Iâll make it happen.â You nodded your head rapidly. Tâaâyta chuckled and returned to his paint job.
âNext weekend?â Not tomorrow. Even though you have it off. Like youâve said before, you wanted to take this slow. Youâve learned your lesson before to go slow in a relationship. Itâs a safer route. Next weekend offers plenty of time to recuperate after today. Work is the only think that gets in the way.
âitâs a date.â No one could wipe off the smile on your face. Another date. Itâs already planned. For trading books and seeing an alien space craft up close and personal. That couldnât come quick enough.
This date continued on. The two of you painting at what trinkets youâve picked. Light conversation flowed between the two of you. It was nice to get to know him some more.
At the end of the date, you both take your pieces up to the counter. The same young man is there again and helps you with the checkout process. Before you had a chance to slip your card into the reader, Tâaâyta beat you to it. You huff with a pout.
The worker estimated a week and half until you could come back to pick up the figurines. You wished to be able to pick them up now. Because the little dragon was adorable while it was unfired.
If Tâaâyta was a dragon, your figurine would be a perfect march to him. All the way down to his gorgeous blue eyes.
Both of you walked out of the strip mall shop and stood on the side of the sidewalk. Those that meandered around the city gave the bulky beast a wide berth. You stepped closer to him, wanting to take in the unique scent of his. How you were going to miss it over the week away from him.
It was unique to him. Alien if you had to put a name to it. But it made up Tâaâyta.
Softly, you placed a hand on his clothed chest and stood on your tippy-toes. Even then, you didnât reach his shoulders. As if he could read it on your face, he bends at the waist. This close to his face, you saw all the small details that made up his features. To the light scars, to the dark speckles in his blue eyes, to the wrinkles that showed his age as a skilled elder. You reached with your free hand towards his cheek and cupped it gently. It gave him all the time in the universe to pull away if he wanted. Instead, Tâaâyta leaned into your touch, eyes slowly closing.
âI wanted to thank you for all of this. You donât have to pay for me though. I can pay for my own stuff,â you told him in a voice above a whisper. Whatâs with Yautjas and wanting to spend their money? The next time, you had to beat him to the punch. No matter what.
Tâaâytaâs eyes opened quickly. The brown Yautja stood back to hid full height. Your hand snapped back, surprised by his sudden movement. But, he caught it before you had a chance. You were pulled into his space, closer than before. âYou donât pay for anything. I pay. I have told you this before,â he growled deep from his chest. Something about it wasnât scary or terrifying. It was a statement. He wouldnât let you win this.
The unfamiliar feel of his skin against your was a stark reminder. You felt a shudder run up the length of your spine. âIâll provide for you. This is my way of showing that to you. Iâm an elite hunter. I provide.â Shit, and he did that on the first date. He really, really did. And he kept doing it too.
You took a shaky breath in and released it. Yet, you were a stubborn creature. More than a mule on a bad day. As much as you wanted to tell him no, you knew that wouldnât work. Heâs just like you. You could see it in his eyes. With another deep breath, you grabbed the collar of his shirt and tugged him down to your level. For a moment, you hesitated, trying to figure out how youâll do this. Then, you pecked your lips on his upper, inner jaw. His body tensed under your touch the second your mouth made contact with his. Then, his hands gripped your hips and tugged you closer.
âIâll take this as you agree.â Damn him.
âIâll get you one of these days,â you retorted at him. Tâaâyta chuckled and rubbed his eyebrow to your forehead. A sign from him in Yautja that he returns the affection.
âLetâs go to my apartment. I still need to show you my library,â you offered to him. His fingers clenched on your hips for a second before he released you.
âYeah, letâs go,â he agreed before stepping back and giving you space to breathe. His scent still filled your nostrils and almost overwhelmed you.
The two of you began to walk down the side walk, ignoring everyoneâs eyes on you. They were judging you. But, you could care less about what they thought. If your love was to an alien, who cares? He treats you like royalty.
Like a guardian, Tâaâyta walked in step with you. All the way back to your apartment. Unlike last time, you let him in and showed him what your home looked like. The library was a plus.

ęąĘÉ´á´á´ęąÉŞęą you came back after leaving
them behind but you changed ( angst )
á´Ęá´Ęá´á´á´á´Ęęą atsushi , dazai , chuuya
The world had changed. The war had raged on, and the skies above had bled crimson in places, swallowing the remnants of whatever hope had once dared to exist. It felt as though time itself had grown weary, dragging itself forward with an inevitability that crushed all those who dared to live within it. Dazai had once been capable of smiling in the face of the void, of charming away the pain, but that was before. Before everything that had been broken beyond repair.
Before you.
It was the first time he'd seen you since that dayâthe day you'd walked away, leaving him with nothing but the weight of your absence and the echoes of your silence. The day he had destroyed you, leaving a part of you dead inside, while he continued on, oblivious to the irreversible damage he had caused. And now, years later, here you wereâstanding before him, stronger than ever. Colder. Unforgiving. Your face unreadable, but your presence unmistakable. It was as if you had been forged in the fires of the very pain he had given you, the flame of that pain now smoldering in the depths of your eyes.
The mafia executive had never imagined he would see you again. And yet here you were, like a ghost brought back to life, and it was as if the world had paused for a moment, holding its breath in anticipation.
You had moved on, hadn't you? He could see it in the way you held yourself, in the way you walked into the room as though you owned itâyour posture, your calm. It wasn't just strength; it was detachment. A disconnection so profound that it almost made him want to turn away, to pretend that he hadn't recognized the bitterness hiding just beneath the surface of your cold composure.
But how could he? How could he look away from the one person who had once held him together, who had made him feel alive when he thought he had long been dead inside? You had been the warmth, the light he never thought he deserved, and yet there you were, untouchable now. You had rebuilt yourself, piece by piece, like a monument to everything he had ruined.
Oh, and Dazai⌠Dazai had continued down his path of destruction, only to find that, without you, it was all hollow. His smile no longer reached his eyes. His jokes no longer sounded funny. His games had lost their meaning. You had been his anchor, the quiet calm that kept him grounded in a world that was far too chaotic for someone like him.
Though, that was all before you had walked away.
With trembling hands he stepped forward, just a few inches closer, as if proximity could somehow heal the fracture, mend what had been torn apart. He opened his mouth, but no words came. What could he say? âIâm sorryâ felt so inadequate, so weak in comparison to the years that had stretched between the two of you. There were no words that could make up for the way he had abandoned you, for the way he had left you to bleed in silence, to rebuild a life without him. How could he even begin to ask for forgiveness when he knew he didn't deserve it?
Oddly so, you hadn't even flinched. The years had done their work on you, turning you into something almost unrecognizable. Dazai could barely remember the softness of your smile, the warmth of your touch. He could only see the coldness in your gaze now, the way your eyes scanned him, unreadable, and it was as if you were studying a ghostâsomeone who had long since lost the right to be remembered.
Of course, he was selfish for wanting to reach out, for wanting to pull you back into his world. Dazai had never been good at understanding what love meant, but now, with you standing there, so far beyond him, he finally understood the one thing he had never fully realized: he had lost you.
Yet, the realization was like a blade to his chest.
"Why are you here?" The question hung in the air, your voice distant, almost cold. It wasnât anger, not exactly. It was just⌠nothing. A lack of care that stung more than anything else.
Dazai couldnât answer. What could he say? He couldnât explain the guilt that weighed on him like an anchor, dragging him under with each breath, let alone explain how much he had tried to drown it with distractions, with hollow pleasures, but the truth had always lurked there, quietly, in the back of his mind: You had left him behind, and there was nothing he could do to undo it.
"Youâve changed," he finally managed, though the words tasted bitter on his tongue.
After all, he had seen it allâthe walls you had built around yourself, the sharpness in your every movement. Although you became a fortress, it was clear you hadnât come back to himânot for redemption, not for forgiveness but something else, something he couldnât name.
A heavy, suffocating weight in his chest, his heart ached. Then, without thinking, he moved toward youâjust a step, his hand outstretched, like a desperate attempt to pull the thread that connected him to you. Taking a step back, not sharply, but enough to remind him, in that brief space, that he no longer held any place in your world.
The distance between youâa reminder of everything he had lostâ and the way you seemed so unaffected by his presence hurt more than he could have ever prepared for. The warmth, the laughter, the gentleness that used to fill the room when you were nearâgone, just like that. He had let it slip through his fingers, and now, he was left with nothing but the remnants of his mistakes.
He shouldâve let you go a long time ago. Maybe, then, he wouldnât have to feel this. But as you turned your back on him and walked away, he realized something he hadnât fully understood until now:
He wasnât just losing you. He was losing himself.
,
Chuuya hadnât expected to see you again. Ever. Time and time again, the mafia executive had told himself he was prepared for anything but in reality he wasnât. Not for this. Not for you.
The moment you stepped back into the Mafia, a cold shiver ran down his spine, the weight of your presence crashing into him like a tidal wave. You, strong and untouchable, your eyes like steel, colder than they had ever been before. You walked past him without a glance, your every step deliberate, calculatedâyou were different. No longer the fragile thing he could manipulate, no longer the girl who clung to him for safety. You had found your own footing, found your own power. And Chuuya, the man who had once held your heart in his hands, felt that power slip through his fingers like sand.
Faster than any punch heâd ever taken, the memories, the pain, the hurt struck him forcefully. You were back, though you werenât his anymore. You never were, in the first place. And he could no longer deny it.
It had all been a lie, hadnât it? A fleeting moment of weakness. Chuuya had told himself he had been ready, ready for something real, something meaningful. But he had failed you. With a fierceness he hadnât deserved, you had trusted him, loved him, and for a time, heâd loved you backâbut that was before his insecurities and the constant weight of his role in the Mafia had consumed him. Before he had pushed you away, never fully realizing what he had until it was gone.
He had messed up. He had shattered the only real thing in his life, and you had left.
Now you were back, stronger than ever, but Chuuya couldnât bring himself to even meet your gaze. He was terrified. Terrified of what you had become, terrified of how you would make him feel. Terrified of the truth.
You had walked out the door once before, and now you walked back inâbut it wasnât with the same tender love he remembered. It was with an edge, a coldness that cut deeper than any blade ever could. You had changed, and he was left standing in the wreckage of his own failure, unable to piece together the broken parts of his heart that he had left scattered on the floor when youâd walked away.
As the quiet hum of the Mafiaâs operations echoed around him, he stood in the hallway, eyes burning from the strain of keeping them from looking at you. You hadnât spoken yet, but he could hear the silent promise in your footsteps. The way you moved with purpose now, no longer the fragile thing who needed his protection, no longer the one who had fallen in love with the man who couldnât be anything but broken.
Hastily, Swiftly, his mind dashed with every emotion he couldnât express. Regret. Guilt. Longing. Desperation. Racing against the inevitability of this moment, the man could feel itâhis heart, beating too fast in his chest. Being stronger, a mere weapon now, you were back, but it was too late. Your gaze was colder, sharper. replaced by a distance that made his breath catch in his throat, the softness he had once adored was gone.
Finding you later in the same office he had once spent hours in with you, where he had whispered promises he couldnât keep, where he had kissed you with a tenderness that felt so out of reach now, you didnât look at him when he entered, didnât acknowledge his presence at all. But he couldnât leaveânot now, not when everything was finally unraveling.
âWhy are you here?â His voice came out harsher than he intended, though the vulnerability underneath it was impossible to ignore. He wanted to ask why you had come back, why you were still here, when youâd already turned your back on him once. But the words stuck in his throat. He didnât deserve an answer. He didnât deserve anything from you.
Naturally, you didnât respond, only glanced up at him, the same unreadable gaze locked onto his. And it hit him thenâthe full weight of everything he had lost.
You were no longer his. And just maybe you never had been.
âIâm not here for you.â Sharp, colder than he had ever heard them, those words cut through the air like a dagger, slicing into him. He flinched at the finality in your tone, the indifference that dripped from your every word. It wasnât just anger; it was something worse. It was disappointment. He had disappointed you, let you down, and now you were back only because the Mafia had pulled you in once again. You had no other choice, perhaps, but he had no place in your world anymore.
âI donât need you, Chuuya.â The words were like a slap to the face. I donât need you. You didnât need his protection. You didnât need his love. You didnât need him, and he knew it now.
Frozen in place he lingered, every part of him screaming with a mix of guilt and longing that only deepened with every passing second. Why had he done this to you?
âThen why come back?â he finally asked, the question tumbling out before he could stop it. His voice cracked, his fists clenched at his sides, though he could feel the tightness in his chest, the desperation to fix it gnawing at him. But he knew better now. There was nothing left to fix.
Not saying anything, you simply turned your back to him and continued with your work, as though he was nothing more than a shadow in the roomâa shadow that had long overstayed its welcome. Chuuya didnât move, didnât speak, and yet every fiber of his being screamed at him to do something.
But he couldnât. Not anymore. In letting you go, he had let everything go.
You were gone long before you had ever left.
And now, in this room, with the echoes of your long lost kisses ringing through the air, Chuuya realizedâhe had lost you forever.
,
Atsushi could feel the weight of the guilt bearing down on him every time his eyes flickered toward you. You, standing there at the Agency, once a place where you had built a quiet camaraderie, a partnership, a friendship, perhaps something more, but not anymore. No, now you were backâsilent, distant, colder than the person he remembered. Your presence felt like a distant storm he could never stop, a reminder of his failure, of the moment he had let you down when you had trusted him with everything. He had failed you, and now, all that remained was the hollow ache of knowing that you were no longer his to protect, to care for, to love.
It had happened on the mission, one that should have been simple, too easy. But nothing was simple with the Agency. Nothing was ever as clear-cut as it seemed. Atsushi had failed you. He had promised you safety, promised you that he would keep you out of harmâs way, and yetâwhen the enemy had ambushed you, when everything had spiraled out of control, it was his hesitation that had cost you. He was too slow, too unsure. He couldnât protect you. And in that moment, when the chaos had subsided, and he had finally made it to where you layâinjured, bleeding, far too much damage for him to fixâhe had seen it. He had seen the trust in your eyes, the trust that had been so effortlessly given, that now burned with something darker. Something much more disappointing.
Now that you were back it was clear that your return was not for him. It wasnât for the connection you once shared. You had returned because it was your duty. The same duty that had pulled you into the web of the Agency. The same duty that had cost you so much already. The same duty that had now made you a mere shadow of the person you had been before, as though the life you had once known had been stripped away, piece by piece, until only the remnants of a mission-driven soldier remained.
Sensing that shift in your very nature the moment you walked back into the Agency, the warmth that once radiated from you had long faded and was replaced by an icy calm that unsettled him. Your smile, which had once been a beacon of light in his darkest moments, had now become something distant, something he could never touch again. You were no longer the person he had leaned on, no longer the person who had trusted him without question.
The man, hopelessly so, wanted to reach out to you, ask how you were, apologize, but every word caught in his throat. How could he speak when he had broken you so thoroughly? How could he ask for anything when he had taken away the one thing that had made you human? You were a soldier now, not the woman who had once shown him warmth, who had held his hand when he needed it most.
At a distance, he watched you, as you walked through the halls of the Agency. Your eyes never meeting his unless it was required, you were always on the move, always busy. You had no time for him, and he couldnât blame you. How could you have any time for him after what had happened?
The night came, and the quiet tension between you two hung in the air, a suffocating cloud that neither of you dared to break. Atsushi sat at his desk, pretending to work, pretending to be okay. But his mind never strayed far from you. He couldnât focus. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the image of you lying on the ground, the blood staining the earth beneath you, staining his soul with the knowledge that he had failed you when it mattered most.
And yet, he knew, deep down, that even if he had been faster, even if he had done everything differently, it might not have been enough. The mission was too dangerous. The odds were stacked against both of you. He hadnât had the strength to protect you then, and now he had lost that chance forever.
The door to his office creaked open, though he barely looked up. He didnât need to, of course. He already knew who it was. You.
âNeed something?â he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper, thick with guilt. He didnât dare to look at you, didnât dare to face the disappointment that he could still see lingering in the air around you. He had nothing to offer anymore. Nothing that could undo the damage he had done.
There was a long pause, and then you spoke, your voice flat, emotionless. "Just following up on the mission report."
Instantly, his heart sank. You were still distant, still coldâthe very things that he had tried to shield you from. You had never wanted this, had never wanted to become something like this, never wanted to be the person who walked in and out of his life without a second glance. But here you were.
âRight,â he said, his voice breaking just slightly, though he hated how weak it sounded. âIâll finish it up. You can go.â
Not even pausing, not even looking back, you walked out, leaving him alone with the suffocating silence that clung to the room like a curse.
Although the weretiger had broken you, you had never given him a chance to make it right. You didnât have to, didnât need to. He was nothing now, a hollow shell of the man you once trusted. And in this moment, Atsushi realized the truth of it allâthe truth he had been denying to himself for so long: he could never undo what had been done. And you would never trust him again.
You were back, but it wasnât for him. It never had been. You were here because you had no other choice, and he was just a piece of the past you had left behindâtorn and broken beyond repair.

The Evolution of Passion: Culmination
Decided on a more meaningful steep for this one. Phoenix Rising . calendula, wild cherry bark, green tea, rooibos, rosehips and orange peel.
I got an ask (truncated) from danmeiljie " thoughts about what happens in the woods in act 1, and how he initiates with his partner in the graveyard in act 3, But i was curious if you made any connections to his emotional journey and how that's reflected in these different sex scenes and his role in them."
This is my opinion analysis of the graveyard scene. This one might trigger some people. Please read with caution.
WARNING: Game Spoilers, Topics of Sex, Abuse, and Adult themes/Language. Not underage appropriate.
This is not fact, just opinion based off my own and game experience. As always, how anybody cannons their relationships or behaviors is perfectly right! No blame, no shame, it's your game.!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Raise your hand if you died here. And I don't mean just a "little death".
Gods, the level of impact this confession had was intense given his avoidant nature throughout the game. I equate it to that moment when someone says their pet doesn't like anybody and they decide to sit in YOUR lap. Those moments are pure wild magic. And so was this one.
Taking Tav to the graveyard is another planned move. But not to manipulate them. And, in my opinion, not to seduce them either.
Thanks to Tav's help, he is finally free of Cazador, but he wants them to bear witness as he frees himself from one more captor.
"Maybe, but he did take it. There's almost nothing left of the person I was. Just a name on a rock. For nearly two centuries I stalked the streets like a ghost. While the person I was lay here, dead and buried."
Astarion's first victim was someone he never really forgave himself for unwittingly handing over to Cazador to be consumed. Himself.
To me, his grave is a symbolic reference of who he thought he should have / could have been still buried deep within his subconscious. A person he barely remembered, but still grieved for. Lost and decayed under centuries of abuse. Decades of being whatever Cazador said he was. Sad, pathetic, little, owned, nothing. Hollowing him out into the ghost he felt he became.
Some of the worst prisons and punishment's you can imagine, exist within our own minds. The wardens are the echo's of others belief system. The whips are others' opinions of you. The bars are your own acceptance of it.
"I can't be what you want to see in me."
And what a relatable and lamentable ponderance for a lot of us. Who would we be without various trauma painting our minds and bodies in ways that distort our own view of ourselves?
Would we be more social? More trusting? More loving? More loved? More worthy of our own consideration? More successful? More satisfied? More... alive?
" This place reeks of death and I want to feel alive again."
It is a very rare thing to find someone who is willing to walk alongside you during your "Frankenstein" phase of healing. The chaotic mess of putting yourself back together and figuring out how to function in the new arrangement. The emotional scars slowing our motion. The rage fevers , the imposter syndrome infections, the weeping wounds that bleed on those who didn't cause them, the pain that drives us into a self induced isolations.
"Iv always been alone. I don't see why that would change now."
*frowns into cup with deep understanding.*
But for Astarion, Tav came along.
Understanding that when he growled and snapped it was because he was scared. So they were patient.
Understanding that he craved companionship, but was untrusting of it. But they cared anyway.
Understanding that his vampiric nature didn't make him inherently bad. So they trusted him. Objectively stupid as that was.
Understanding that his need to feel powerful and in control of everything was a grasp at never wanting to feel helpless again. So they helped him feel safe.
Understanding that he couldn't see the good in himself through his blinded eyes. So they offered what they saw of him.
"You saw something in me. Someone else I could be."
What is that? If not love.
It is said that we don't actually fall in love with people. We fall in love with who we become within the love they give us. What he wants is not just Tav on the physical level, but to continue feeling alive within the safety of their love for him.
Accepting that he has always been more than what others made him to be, he now has the strength to not only say goodbye to the idea of who he should have been, but also lay to rest the person he created to survive. Giving honor and forgiveness' to that persona, and making way for the birth of the person he wants to become.
The Star of Bethlehem flower (Ornithogalum umbellatum) symbolizes purity, innocence, honesty, hope, and forgiveness.Â
HE gets to choose who he becomes going forward. What was done can not be undone, but he can choose what to do with it. What meaning the sacrifice will have. What the knowledge of it does to him. It has always been in his power to transmute that poisonous experience into something different, something powerful. To rise from the proverbial ashes to be born again. He just needed someone to remind him of that fact.
Consider yourself reminded as well dear reader..
This included reclaiming and repurposing his view and use of desire. Thus his proposition.
"with everything that life has to offer."
If you boil it all down to its base essence, sex is an act of life. Not only intended to create life, but also used to heal and offer connection. When used properly, of course. This has been quite lost in modern times. And this reason, to me, is why most SA survivors never fully walk away from sex. The desire for that intended connection is still there. So his seemingly misplaced flirt of "If a night of passion is on offer, I could be persuaded," actually does make sense here.
He is being cheeky, as he is known to be, but he also wants Tav to know that he trusts them and feels good about them desiring him as well. "I could be persuaded" mirrors Tav's "You don't have me yet." line the first night you are together. Its meant to be a bratty but fun flirt. Very "Oh, I would love a night of passion, but do give me all the reasons why you desire me. No seriously, tell me what you love about me. Wait, maybe you should write it all down."
Also, with Cazador stabbed, eviscerated, beheaded, shit on, burnt, and yeeted off the ledge into the abyss, he is safe to desire Tav now. Sex with him no longer equates to a death sentence.
Unlike the first night in the woods, or the second night at the grove party, Astarion and Tav have developed real intimacy (into me see) between each other. There is no need for power plays and theatrics here. No need to be half naked, using his body as a tool of seduction. No need to be grandiose using pick up lines to entice.
Instead he is fully clothed and mirroring Tav in a kneeling position. Symbolizing their equality in this moment. A very humble " I want all that you are." on his lips.
If I had to categorize MY Astarion into a sexual subtype. I see him as Pan: demisexual. The bond he feels with Tav is strong and for a demi, that is very seductive. You love him too and that makes him feel safe, seen and...well...
Aww..that's so sweet. But, why does he push Tav down?
There are various possibilities for this. If Tav rode him to the ground in the woods, it could be a turn about is fair play move. I mean, very fair if you ask me.
Or, it could be a loud and clear demonstration of him proving he is the master of his own desires now. Its straight forward dominant behavior. No games, no posturing. He pushes Tav back as if impatient to have them submit to him. Crawling up their body, caging them in with his arms and giving them full on, raw, naked, unadulterated eye contact. Claiming their mouth eagerly with is own. Spreading them open to him with his knee. Declaring that they are his and he is in want.
His first blood, first love, and first time in his new life.
Mercy...
It was Tav who wanted to wake up next to a handsome virgin every morning. Right? *wink*
Happy chosen birthday my beloved elf.
Now, for you dear reader.
One thing I want you to remember when you start feeling sad or hopeless that Astarion is not real. That there is no Tav out there for you, remember that you are Tav. You loved this damaged mess in all his undead glory. Which means you have the capacity and ability to give that effort, kindness, love and patience to yourself as well. Not having someone does not mean you are unlovable or unworthy. It just means its not time yet. You may still still have quests to complete and dragons to slay. Or maybe you are the dragon? Hoarding riches and eating idiots who venture too far into your domain. Either way, its all part of being alive. Neither good nor bad, until you deem it such. Chose joy when you can.
Thank you anon, I'm so glad you see the vision!! I summed up a bunch of my thoughts in this post but it's mostly about hypotehtical scenarios and kinda cringe haha, so i'm gonna try and formulate my thoughts again as to why I find their potential dynamic so appealing
I'm forever plagued by the fact that they only interacted once, but that one interaction is so so important to me and I think says so much about how Doc would treat Jimmy. This may sound like I'm infantilizing Jimmy which I apologize for in advance, but Jimmy does quite literally get infantilized in canon and he tends to speak in a childish manner. He is very much not incompetent as if he were a child, moreso someone who's just been made to believe themselves to be that way, and that needs addressing first before he can rise to his full potential if he is to continue to try and get by in an environment that constantly knocks him down
As in the one interaction they had, in which Doc instantly picked up on what Jimmy genuinely needed, I believe he'd be able to pick up on Jimmy's wants and needs without direct verbalization, which is good because Jimmy wouldn't be able to place, let alone communicate the intricacies of his woes. At most, Jimmy is able to make blunt statements like "I didn't like that" or "This makes me unhappy". This is also helped by their dynamic in my head being explicitly not romantic, knowing how his romantic or debatably romantic partners have treated him (eg even Tango, although VERY sweet and good to him, fails to recognize Jimmy's continued need for support, especially when he doesn't communicate that, and goes along with jokes made at Jimmy's expense as easily as most other players do even though he means no malice)
You'll have to bear with me on the symbolism here but more on their interaction and Doc saying "I want to take you into my hands and take you to a safe place": to me Jimmy is very much a caged bird, but freeing him is not going to help him when the cage is all he knows. Doc could be that person to make it a safe place with encouragement and gentleness, in which Jimmy can have that push to both grapple with his feelings and open up, but ultimately leaving the cage of his own accord. Doc referred to Jimmy triggering his "parental instincts" himself, and knowing how gentle and protective he can be, I fully believe in him providing Jimmy that safe place he needs; to provide him a home in which Jimmy can feel welcomed back into, which is something Jimmy has struggled with (his tendency to run away from "home" and not daring to return if he underperforms at something or if he feels he's done something unforgivable)
This is very apparent now with the "I'm not a toy" declaration Doc made whilst viewed as a spectacle in his Skyblock prison, but in general Doc has never been fond of being played or made fun of. He does not let go of grudges and he will go to whatever lengths it takes to come out on top when his image is challenged, so he was always going to be able to empathize with Jimmy to some degree and I have no doubt he'd become defensive on his behalf. His competitive and often bitter nature is definitely not always a positive, but Jimmy could use someone as vocal and open as Doc to stand for him as he hasn't been allowed to and no one else (aside from Joel in recent times) has for him before
Basically I think Doc should be allowed to be a bit of a dad to Jimmy and provide him a place to help kickstart any healing because I believe him to do so if given the chance
