You keep saying refusing to vote for Biden on moral grounds because of Palestine is ineffective because Trump would be worse, but that really isn't the point. Largely (with the exception of a few extremists and a contingency of people who wouldn't have voted anyways) the philosophy of a movement that has people withhold their vote is to force a significant policy change that wouldn't have changed otherwise. Its a form of protest. I understand from your perspective, election-focused and pragmatic, it is a threat to whoever is running, but if Biden had wanted the votes being withheld he would have capitulated.
Not that this isn't a moot point since he's out, but whatever.
See, this is intensely fucking dumb.
"force a significant policy change" it would not. One, because Biden is the president of the United States, and Israel is not one of those states. Short of sending the CIA to, idk, assassinate Netanyahu in his bed, which most of these people would be against I think because of how much they bitch and moan about US foreign policy at any given opportunity, he cannot actually make an independent foreign power do what he wants and what is electorally convenient for him. Like, I'm very sure Biden would love it if Netanyahu and his partisans stopped acting like fucking freaks for five minutes, if only so that it would stop being a PR nightmare for him. But that's not happening, because he cannot control what Netanyahu does. He could vastly reduce the support the US is providing Israel, and in my view he should, but that's not going to stop what Netanyahu and the Israeli government is doing. Because, I hate to break it to you, but the reason they're carpetbombing Gaza is because they want to be carpetbombing Gaza, and even without US aid they will continue to do it, even it just means with older and less effective weapons. Ultimately, the change that leads to a ceasefire and an end to the war is going to come from the actual parties involved, not Joe Biden.
Two, you've already gotten the significant policy change. Biden has, on multiple occasions now, come out in favor a ceasefire. He has actively been working, along with the Qatari government, to try and broker some kind of peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, but those two keep on fucking it up because they're both run by bloodthirsty psychopaths who don't care one iota about the people they're meant to be governing and only on killing whoever they want. That's been open fact for months now. And it has meant fuckall. The people doing their moral purity about how they'd never vote for Biden were still doing it, just moving the goalposts on what they wanted. First it was ceasefire, then it was 'no ceasefire until [insert impossible demand here] is given', because moving goalposts is what these people do. It's the same mentality as people who saw that Biden was doing COVID stimulus, or cancelling student loans, or reclassifying marijuana, and decided that the issue now was that he wasn't doing enough of it. It's a movement that's been consistently comprised of dogs that caught the car, and are angry that they caught the car because now they can't complain, and they don't want to actually affect meaningful change, they just want to complain because that's easier. And if that's what these people have been doing for his entire presidency, why on Earth would any reasonable person suddenly believe it's different on this one specific issue?
Three, cool you're protesting, then what? Your protest is utterly unserious and completely meaningless if it's not going to have any tangible effects, so what's the next step? You've decided to make your moral purity stance an issue that the vast majority of you learned from infographics on Instagram rather than listening to the voices involved (which is why the red triangle brigade is still a thing on Twitter), so what happens now? No political party is ever going to capitulate entirely to it, because the constituency is just too small (that "uncommitted" gambit was only getting like 10% of the vote wherever it was happening, Biden won over it as a literal write-in candidate in at least one state), so other than the compromise that's already happening, the goalpost movers are gonna withhold their votes because blah blah blah my morals. And their next step is, what? Trump gets elected. And their movement, which has no thought or serious effort put behind it or any actual attempt to provide material aid to the people actually suffering, has helped put a man who is going to be far worse for it in power. The "significant policy change" is going to be that Trump gives Netanyahu whatever he wants and he proceeds to wipe Gaza off the map. The "significant policy change" is that President "Trump Heights" actively makes things worse for the people this protest is supposed to help, as a consequence of that very protest.
It's not about me only being concerned with being "election focused" or some cold hearted bitch. It's about me, as a person who thinks what Israel has been doing since the start is godawful and deeply horrendous, realizing that this entire "protest" is not only asinine but will result in deeply negative consequences and very real harm for the people this protest is purported to be for, and being sickened by that. I live in the real world, and in the real world action speaks far louder than intent. I don't have to acknowledge that the protest wants this or that outcome or what the hypothetical impossible asks that are never going to be answered are, because I understand that they will not matter. What matters is what you get out of your protest, what gains are received, how that protest actually affects change, not the change it gives wishy washy lip service to.
#personal#answered#anonymous#this isn't very eloquent because i've been feeling a bit off all day#but if your protest is not only ineffectual but actually going to make things worse for the people you claim to 'help'#it deserves to be called stupid and be given the disrespect it engenders#i don't CARE about the philosophy behind it#it doesn't matter#it means fuck all that this protest is meant to convey this or that#because the outcome is what matters#the outcome that is going to affect real people who are already suffering#and are certainly not going to have their suffering alleviated if these people don't get their heads out of their asses

So, many people take for granted that there has been a huge increase in the prevalence of egalitarian and pacifistic ideals over the last few centuries. I don't actually know if this is true. It certainly looks true on shorter timescales, e.g. the world seems to me more egalitarian today than it was 1000 years ago, but I'm really not sure how we'd evaluate it on longer timescales. Are we more egalitarian on average than 20,000 years ago? I have no idea. I think it's clear from the archeological evidence, though, that society is much less violent than it was 20,000 ago, so at least that gain can be sort of confidently claimed.
And the question, then, is... why? My first pass at an answer would be technology; because of technology we live lives less governed by fear an want, and thus can afford to be kinder to one another. We have material security that we once lacked, and in light of this security, fiercely guarding what little we have is less necessary. Or something in that vicinity. But I think there's also possibly another effect, that of mass trauma. I believe @tanadrin suggested this in a post somewhere. If you're living in a world where 4/5 of your siblings died in childhood, where people around you are constantly at risk of death by a simply infection or the common cold, where the majority of your own children will likely die... I think that's likely to really mess you up, by modern standards. Make you far less sensitive to death and suffering—because, you know, you have to be.
Anyway, I think this is reflected in the way many historical texts talk so cavalierly about death and killing. To me, and to I think a lot of people today, losing someone we care about is unimaginably painful. But if you listen to the way death is talked about in e.g. the Norse sagas, it's discussed as a practical inconvenience, a financial burden, an affront to the ego. But a tragedy? Almost never. Because, I suspect, you can't consider something a tragedy if it's happened to you time and time again, and also to everyone you know and everyone you've every heard about forever. At that points, it's just life.
I have two points here. One is that this is a parable against falling into the naturalistic fallacy. There are many struggles that we today consider "just a part of life", that people are reflexively dismissive of trying to alleviate with technology. But for most of human history, this same thing could be said of massive child mortality. Now that we have the benefit, at least in the developed world, or not having to deal with that, we can recognize it for the horrific tragedy that it was. We can recognize it for the horribly traumatic thing that it was, this thing that filled everyone's life with needless suffering for centuries upon centuries. When medical technology allows us to e.g. prevent natural aging, I am nearly certain we will look back on it the same way. We will wonder "how did they all get by, knowing they had so little time on Earth, knowing the approximate age of their own death?" And the answer will be twofold: "they just did" and "they really didn't".
The other point is that this all suggests against the narrative that suffering makes one virtuous. I think the reality, as hard a pill as it may be to swallow, is nearly the opposite: comfort and luxury make people more virtuous. The greatest source of hate and anger in the world, I strongly suspect, is fear, and being free from fear allows one to be free from hate and anger in a way that the fearful are going to have a far harder time doing. As far as it goes, through the various ups and downs in my own life, this has been my experience to a tee. I think @balioc suggested something like this somewhere, and while I think they went a bit too far (I have definitely received some benefits to virtue from the harder times in my life, namely a strongly increased desire to ameliorate similar conditions for others), I think the gist of their idea ("struggle often makes you a worse person") is pretty accurate. It's not always true, but it certainly seems to be true a fair amount of the time.
I suspect that the idea that luxury corrupts is mostly a selection effect: that is, in a harshly competitive society, the people most able to win luxury for themselves are likely to be the most ruthless. So it appears that the luxury is causing the evil, when in reality the causality is exactly opposite. At least, that would be my guess.
Overall this paints a rather grim picture of the human experience. Suffering makes us less kind, most of us are condemned to suffering, and those most likely to escape it are those who were least kind to begin with. And I'd really like to hear from anyone who's had a different experience, who feels they're a better person for the hardships in their life, because that has really not been mine.
I don't know where I'm going with this. A dose of pessimism to cut the usual utopian-optimism of this blog. I suppose I think these features of the human condition are fundamentally escapable, and that's cause to feel good. But in order to escape our problems we first have to understand them, so, here's been one attempt to do that.

just putting this out here because ive been seeing a lot of confusion on the subject
intrusive thoughts are not specific to OCD, or any disorder for that matter. anyone can have intrusive thoughts. however: intrusive thoughts are not random impulses, they are ego-dystonic (meaning they don't correspond your actual values) and often quite distressing. the distinction is important, and here is why:
intrusive thoughts and feelings are at the root of obsessive-compulsive disorder; when the thoughts emerge they are significantly more difficult to get rid of for those with OCD. the obsessive nature of OCD includes the thought distortion and prevalence of the obsessions (a latched on "theme"/ongoing thought spiral), the compulsions are the actions or rumination that follows which the sufferer performs to alleviate the discomfort. think of it this way. OCD is like having constant itches you feel the need to scratch. say everyone has itches, and for most, they come and go. but for some people, the itch demands to be scratched, and while there is temporary relief, it keeps coming back worse the next time. indulging in it adds to the ordeal, trapping them in a cycle. this is the basis of the disorder.
intrusive thoughts affect everyone - but they don't affect everyone equally. some bare the brunt of them to a life-altering extent. unwanted thoughts are a natural part of the human experience, but for many people they can consume them and develop into obsessions or ruminations. someone with harm ocd might deal with constant recurring thoughts of hurting people and have time-consuming rituals to "prove" otherwise. some people may have a similar thought but it will likely end there with minimal distress. while it is still an intrusive thought, and they may be distressing to you, they are certainly not a joke.
joking about intrusive thoughts "winning" and snapping as a result only further perpetuates the stigma surrounding OCD and misinforms people that intrusive thoughts do correspond to one's actual urges or values, when this is not the case and have the propensity to hurt people with OCD even more. please be respectful and try to be mindful of the degree of which OCD symptoms are minimized and dismissed. we need advocates and people willing to understand us.
also adding this: OCD cannot be reduced to intrusive thoughts. it is so much more, and people may be debilitated by any number of symptoms besides intrusive thoughts. for many people obsessional themes may begin as a singular thought, and ruminating and ritualizing may be what they struggle with the most. we do not share a monolithic experience.
adding this also: intrusive thoughts aren't necessarily gory or excessively violent; that's another mischaracterization. no matter the content, they are distressing to the person having it. it can be something like "what if i'm always focused on my breathing" or even "what if i'm actually a different mbti type from what i think i am" (yes i've actually spent excessive amounts of time ruminating over this one before)

What do you think Cyrus and Lysandre would think of Volo?
I'm very glad you asked Anon! I think about this kind of thing a lot, and I love the differences in these three even though their goals are super similar. Note that some of this is interpretation on my part, and that I haven't played XY in a long time (although a friend is playing it rn so I'm experiencing it vicariously through them), so I may get a detail or two wrong.
that being said, lets go! (this got long, hence the readmore)
So first, lets think about their specific motivations, since they all wanna essentially kill everyone.
Cyrus wants to end the world and rebuild it in his own image because he thinks human spirit (aka: the ability to feel emotions) is a fundamental flaw and makes life unlivable. His issue is with the emotion and irrationality that is inherent to being a person, and he seems to genuinley believe that getting rid of that would make things better, because if you can't feel you can't feel bad, and if you dont act irrationally you won't make stupid mistakes (at least as far as I understand it), and in game its suggested this stems from him having kind of shitty parents, to whom he was never good enough. You can kind of see the progression there.
Volo wants to end the world and rebuild it in his own image because he finds life unfair, and also because he is destructivley curious. It's a mixture of thinking things just aren't how they should be and this inssesant need to know. His obsession with history has progressed to believing he deserves to meet Arceus, and his plan is just one way to get there. It's not really too clear why he's like this (as far as I know), but he is ready and willing to go to extreme lengths to get what he wants and to find out, and wants to use what he's found out about history to improve upon Arceus' creation.
Lysandre wants to end all (or most, depending on which game you play) life on earth because he believes humans are inherently destructive and ruining what he sees as a perfect beautiful world. He used to want to make positive change, but became dissillusioned when none of his efforts really seemed to alleviate the world's issues, and so decided that the issue stemmed from people. Which is certainly a decision to make, that's for sure lol.
There's certainly a degree of selfishness in all of their plans- Cyrus plans to be the only surviviour into the new world and is pushing his idea of an ideal world onto people who all disagree with him. Volo is, ultimatley, doing this all for himself. He wants to know, so he will do anything to find out, regardless of who is hurt in the process. Lysandre has just decided that everyone on the planet is unworthy of life, and plans only to spare Team Flare, which you need to buy into. Pay to win.
In short, their issues are with emotion, divinity, and humanity respectivley.
So, how would Cyrus and Lysandre feel about Volo? Well, I think they'd both fucking hate him.
Fist, Cyrus. Volo is pretty much everything Cyrus hates. He's emotional, irrational, and selfish. He lies constantly, pulling underhanded tricks, and is ultimatley doing this for his own benefit (rather than the broader benefit Cyrus sees from his own plans). They both come from a place of unhappiness in the world and personal hurt, but the difference in how they are doing it is too great. They both believe they are the one who can or must do what they are doing, and I don't think they have much room in their worldview for anyone else. Also, Volo doesn't plan to alleviate human suffering in the same way Cyrus does. He's very vauge about it (and personally I don't think he knows how he'd do it either, he's mostly in it to meet god), and I think Cyrus would fucking hate that. Plus their personalities would clash something awful. Differences in ideals aside, as people I just don't think they could get along. Volo is too friendly (even if its an act), and Cyrus would deflect that. (This is something I've thought about a lot since I'm writing a whole fic about Cyrus ending up in hisui, and Volo shows up a lot)
Volo and Lysandre would be less clear cut, but I do think they would also end up at odds. Lysandre thinks the world (minus humans) is perfect as is and should be preserved. Volo thinks the world as created by Arceus is flawed, and should be remade. Fundamental conflict of interests. I do think Lysandre, if presented with Volo, would see a guy from the past and start going on about how things must have been so perfect and beautiful back then, but upon finiding out what Volo wishes to do would definitley come around to him being someone he needs to oppose. In terms of their personalities, I think they would less directly clash, but that's mainly because they both are better at projecting a nicer version of themself to other people. They would ostensibly be amiable to each other and perhaps even look like they're getting on, but behind their veneers they would not be enjoying each other's company. There is also a chance that I think Volo could try and get chummy with Lysandre to exploit his resources and reach to get what he wants, but whether that would work is a whole other matter. Lysandre may be a little too guarded and self-assured for it to achieve anything.
Ultimatley, these three are all fucking trainwrecks of people and would definitley NOT get along in any way besides surface level similarities in their beliefs and perhaps fake kindess.
Also I know it wasn't in the question but for the record I think that if you put Lysandre and Cyrus in a room together you would have five minuites before they are trying to kill each other (/exag). They would fucking hate each other so much. Lysandre just wants to kill everyone, Cyrus feels like he knows how to fix everyone, and each's inability to understand and accept the other's veiwpoint would drive them both up the wall. (also the angle that lysandre is really fucking rich and isn't using it to do anything productive. Like in the anime cyrus is rich but fuck anime cyrus all my homies hate anime cyrus. I'm pretty sure in the games he's literally just some guy.)
Anyways, this was really fun to think about, and I hope that you find it interesting!
#Always up to answer questions like this btw!#I love thinking about these guys so much and I have so much to say about them#Anyways yeah! I find it hard to believe many of the evil team leaders would get on#except guzma and piers those two are buddies I know this in my heart. but also they dont really count#ask#anon#cyrus meows

Rachel also could imagine it which made her laugh as well. "Yeah, I feel like he would forego driving and literally just run here. Or simply just keep texting in all caps 'WHAT, WHAT, WHAT, WHAT.' And right now we don't need shouting and panic." She chuckled knowing how it was to be with someone whose first response was to freak out. It certainly had made her first response more often than not calm even if inside she was scared. Maybe Asli was the same way because of that, but she really couldn't know that since she really didn't know the woman. She nodded as she listened to her share who she had and had not told yet. "I'm sorry for asking I know it's none of my business really." Rachel shared because it wasn't like she was going to tell the woman who should and should not know. She gave a nod at the telling Eli part. "Do you think it would be better coming from you or? I just figure that telling him 'don't get upset but....' is probably a horrible way to start. I think it's very fair to presume no matter what there is going to be worry." She laughed a bit knowing just how much Eli cared for his girlfriend and how much he'd suffered when he wasn't with her. Rachel was a bit shocked by the thanks, having felt it unneeded and unnecessary. "Oh, well yeah. That's what friends are for. Feeling alone when you're struggling is the shittiest feeling in the world. I mean not that being surrounded by friends alleviates all of the pain, but it's important to be there for the people you care about." She shared as she gave a small shrug, she'd always be there for Eli. "Also I mean congratulations. I know you weren't the one who told me, but you're already a great mother. And like I told Elijah, he's going to be such a wonderful dad, he doesn't even realize it yet."
She wished she wasn't so awkward around the woman that she should've known so much better by this point. Considering just how many people they mutually know, especially with Eli and Ray, it felt like they should've been friends by this point as well. Though, admittedly, Asli never believed that she was good at making friends and was confused as to how she's gathered herself a good group since coming to Providence Peak. So perhaps it wasn't entirely far-fetched that they weren't exactly close. She was still embarrassed over the fact, of course. And she believes that she can certainly do better in those regards. Yet perhaps that could help explain in some way why it's taken them this long.
She chuckled softly. "I can already imagine his theatrics if you had," she mused. The man's dramatics was one of the many things she loved about him. However, she could also already envision his reaction for once he finds out about this and the light scolding he'll give her before taking her back home to take care of her for the rest of the day. She knew him like the back of her hand. So hearing Rachel's question and realizing she'd been right before, she looked at her and shook her head. "Not yet," she mused softly. "Soon, though. My brother knows... I'm still working on letting my biological family know... I haven't told Atlas yet... It's a work in progress." There was a lot of factors at stake when it came to letting hers and Eli's families know about the baby and the risks. Which, for a moment, left her wondering if Rachel knew about the risks yet before she realized that she might be less calm if she did know. "Probably letting Eli know would be better," she admitted. "I don't want him to worry... But I don't want to hide this from him either." One of her hands moved to her small bump, her fingers tracing lightly on it for a moment. "Thank you," she finally said, glancing back at her. "For keeping an eye on him during... during that month there. It made things a little easier knowing that he was safe and with you."

Do you have any suggestions for finding faith again ? I've lost all hope in any relationship with god and I feel like at this point there is no point trying to pray, go to mass or have any connection with him. After years of trying to see him in pain I dont anymore. I dont know whether to keep trying or go back to church or just admit I dont believe. Either way it's hard
I think faith is a very complicated thing, and there can be a tendency for some people to simplify it and present it as something that is always joyous and easy. There can be a desire for us to want a relationship with God that puts us in that state of mind - and it's something that I certainly have been (and do still have a tendency towards) guilty of.
The thing is, when it comes to pain, there is no navigating away from it. There is no way to go through life without suffering, trials, or setbacks. And that's an uncomfortable truth for a lot of people, as much as we might try and reconcile ourselves to an understanding of pain and suffering, a lot of us want that understanding because we think it'll make sitting with the pain or enduring those setbacks any easier. And I don't think that is necessarily the case. Having an intellectual understanding of the pain that we're enduring, is quite different from taking a painkiller that can at least alleviate the discomfort.
God can be a balm that soothes our pain, but so often our own feelings of disconnection from Him can aggravate the pain we're experiencing. God knows the amount of times I've begged and yelled and thrashed out during pain flare ups for something from Him. Something to keep going. I certainly do still struggle to see God in the midst of pain and suffering. As much as I might try and read the works of the Saints and their own relationship to suffering - as much as they tell us to be joyous in suffering and to give praise to God always, we still know that in some capacity they suffered.
Certainly in some moments, I find it much easier to connect with the Saints who endured difficulties and sufferings than I do with God. And that's the funny thing, they point us towards God. Our understanding of their suffering and of their joys only comes from an understanding and pursuit of God. I wish I could say: "Hey, here's some prayers you need to say and that'll help you understand" but I can't, and I'm sorry.
What I do know though, is that when I've tried to endure suffering completely disconnected from God I've been in a much worse place. I don't have the comfort of hearing just the words I needed to hear in the Mass, I don't have the comfort of the calmness that prayer can so often bring, I don't have the comfort of feeling like I have someone that I can truly open up to about everything. Someone to be completely honest with, someone who I don't have to worry about how I'm articulating myself. At the very least it gives me someone to scream out to. Someone to beat against through the tears. And then, often without warning, you'll get the healing balm that you need. Maybe not enough to completely cure you, but enough to comfort you in a way that other earthly things cannot. Something to keep going, something that directs your suffering towards a purpose.
One of the things that people with OCD struggle with is doubt, doubt even in things that they would otherwise fully comprehend that they believe. I often ask "Do I know this in just an intellectual capacity about what I'm supposed to believe about the Christian faith, or do I actually believe in these things?". But I've also tried 'not believing', and that's when it becomes clearest that I do believe. And where else does this leave me with but to keep dragging myself towards God?
Going to Mass when you're struggling isn't always easy - even when you're in a good spot in life it can be a struggle. But I would recommend still trying to attend. Allow yourself to be swept up in the joyous anticipation of Advent. God is coming. God is here. God is with us. Allow yourself to be a joyous child, get a little silly with it. Take part in advent arts and crafts. Try some advent related meditations. Watch some Youtube videos that speak about the joy of Advent. Even if you feel like you're fooling yourself into trying to believe, let it take you on a journey. Open up to God about the struggles. Think of prayer as like your diary - that nobody else can ever read, but that you can ask things of. Open up about the good times and the hard times. Be honest even if you say "I'm not sure if you're real, I'm not sure if I believe".
I recommend these books all the time, but I do still think they're very good and worth reading:
On Job: God-Talk and the Suffering of the Innocent by Gustavo Gutiérrez
The Catholic Guide to Depression: How the Saints, the Sacraments, and Psychiatry Can Help You Break Its Grip and Find Happiness Again by Aaron Kheriaty
And something that always kinds of sticks with me is this:
I really would recommend searching into the lives of various Saints, and reach out for their intercession. Think of it as opening up a connection with a friend. They want to help you, and I think knowing that even the Saints went through some of the things that we endure in life can bring us a sense of hope. Yes they suffered in life, but their tears have been wiped away. They are with God, in joyous calmness and happiness that we can never quite put into words. And we can hope that, even if we can't understand the suffering in our lives right now, that there is something that will outshine all of the sufferings we have endured in life.

hello, I'm slowly transitioning to veganism and I was wondering in your opinion between dairy, eggs, and meat/fish, which of these food groups would you say does the most harm? I have ED history, so I'm thinking dairy may be best to cut last since it hides in foods often and would require a lot of hypervigilance on my part, but obviously harm reduction is key, and if dairy is more harmful than the others, I feel it kind of defeats the purpose? I appreciate any insight 😊
it's hard to say, all are terrible in their own ways and all create death and suffering. perhaps focus on the easiest stuff to replace first. look in your supermarkets for the availability of alternatives, google around for recipes you'd feel comfortable making. and also, quite a few people are vegan with a history of eds, so perhaps you could find articles from them and how they dealt with it and the steps they took. just do one step at a time and see how you cope. since i don't have experience in this department (although i can be a habitual binger, and was terrible with it as a child), i want to be careful in the advice i give. but it certainly can be done. just try your best, do what you can, and focus on positive gains and replacement rather than guilt and deprivation. some things that would also help learning at the same time is body neutrality and mindfulness (the yoga practice). removing the idea of mind-body duality and self objectification, focusing on the moment and being grateful for the little things, as well as learning other, healthier ways of enacting change and control in your life are safe methods (along with specialised therapy with someone educated in eds) of alleviating dysmorphic disorders somewhat.
i hope any of this helps. the way eating disorders fester is the connection between guilt and food getting reinforced over and over. morals are super important, and so is compassion and caring about others, but eating disorders will cling to any reason to justify themselves, so it is very important to go about it slowly and carefully in a way that does not focus on that guilt, but instead the positive, philanthropic reasons and the tangible and psychological gains from the changes you make. less suffering, less environmental damage, better health, your power as an individual and collective, the "warm glow" you get for doing even small good deeds. if you make mistakes, don't punish yourself, don't feel bad. if you get sick or notice your mindset getting worse, don't feel bad about backing off for a bit, you can try again later. you can't do much to help animals and people if you're very sick or worse.

This works really well, and you get something out of it pretty fast. A smaller mess. A rush of dopamine for doing something helpful for yourself.
I have ADHD but ALSO depression/GAD/CPTSD/Other Woes. So "do a small act of productivity" advice felt for a long time like it was unattainable because that stuff was STACKING. But once I started trying even when it felt like shit, I realized I was capable of a lot more than I thought.
Because Tumblr is the way it is (full of angels and fools and people who are both, and all of us wounded and yelling about it) I need to do a disclaimer before I go into the rest: It's sometimes accurate to say "No, I'm REALLY MESSED UP and I CAN'T."
Certainly that is the case for me quite often. The other day I went to get a soup bowl and accidentally tipped a bunch of clean dishes into a dirty sink. I was devastated. I could not do anything more than get a bowl and when that went wrong I could literally do nothing more, not even to eat. It happens.
So believe me, I know The Impossibles. ALSO if you have any physical limitations like pain or chronic fatigue, that's different and I can't speak to that as those difficulties are not ones I share.
But I also want people to know that those of us used to The Struggles do spend more time than we think able to do small things. So we should stop and think, "I am certainly deep in The Miseries right now, but what if I tried to be kind and helpful to future me for a bit?"
"What happens if it sucks and I don't even go 10 minutes, or it doesn't work and I don't feel better?" Well, you can still be proud of yourself. An act of kindness towards yourself counts as much as being kind to someone else (please, darling, trust me that it does).
And if it goes well, how WONDERFUL that you feel better. Or at least did something.
ALSO THIS APPLIES TO PLAY.
You NEED to play. And you deserve to, no matter how behind you are on other things.
Everything sucks and is boring? Oh god yes it is. I get it. But can you gently and guiltlessly play for 10 minutes? Can you watch some fun videos of art being made or baby horses learning to run or people testing crossbows? Can you sketch something for 10 minutes? Give some dolls a wardrobe change? Rearrange a shelf? Just engage for a little while in something you enjoy when you feel well, or do something to make your environment prettier. Open some curtains and look at some favorite objects
I mention play to emphasize that it is a positive motion towards feeling better, when you are Submerged In The Deeps lifting yourself IS productive, and can help even when you do not think it will at first.
When we are discussing alleviating suffering, I don't give a fuck about people getting back on their feet so they can do labor, which is how a lot of dialogue about recovery is oriented. I don't give a single shit! I give a fuck about people not suffering. I give a fuck about people having HOPE and being LESS MISERABLE and sometimes that means trying to restore PLAY by force of will, even if it doesn't work that time. It's okay to reach for recovering your joy first.
ANYTHING you can do to make yourself feel marginally less shitty is worth trying for 10 minutes.
Someone requested ADHD life hacks, and this response was my favorite.
"The Next 10 Minutes method is ideal for ADHD brains.
Find something that seems impossible. Set a timer for 10 minutes.
Do the impossible thing for 10 minutes.
If it starts feeling less impossible, set another time for 10 minutes. If it still feels impossible, take a break.
Our brains make an insane amount of dopamine when we're being productive.
The 10 minute method isn't about quality. It's literally about quantity. Be productive doing SOMETHING for 10 minutes. Make dopamine for 10 minutes. You'll feel better...or your brain is tired and needs to rest. Win win either way."

gonna have to write a longpost soon containing what I've dubbed (very pretentiously) "the dismal thesis". it ties together so many of my ideas about the human condition and it IMO elucidates many of the subtler disagreements people express in the discourse on here. the gist is that ethics (under many common conceptions) is basically antithetical to beauty (under many common conceptions). more generally, reducing suffering often comes at the cost of those things that make life worth living in the first place—art, adventure, love, etc. in almost everything that the average person (myself included) considers to be worthwhile in life is the capacity for pain, and thereby in the widespread existence of worthwhile things is, inherently, the existence of widespread pain. furthermore, in all the little joys of life are resources not being spent on alleviating the massive suffering that exists in the world.
there is a very sensible conception of justice, which many people subscribed to (not necessarily wrongly), which says "making art is always immoral; that time and money could go to feeding the hungry instead" and furthermore "the very existence of complex human society, of human social relations, is unethical, because relatively free human social relations contain within them the capacity for suffering, which will certainly exist as a reality if such social relations are widely practiced". there are a million other things like this. many of us enjoy a nice walk through the forest or on the beach, in fact we count this kind of thing as one of life's deeper pleasures. but the existence of a beach or a forest requires the mass suffering of a billion insects and other animals eating one another, killing one another, suffering under the worst conditions imaginable.
and the point is that there is something inherent about this conflict between beauty and ethics. beauty requires both 1) a certain level of complexity, and 2) some tether to human aesthetic intuitions. and the fact of the matter is that anything complex enough and "close to home" enough to be beautiful to us is going to involve, or at least make room for, pain and suffering.
the above is merely an articulation of thesis, not a defense of it (that's for the longpost). but I really do think this is true. I really do think there is a sense in which
the state of the world is unacceptable; there are such vast amounts of pain and suffering that to truly comprehend it should totally overwhelm you.
humans want more than simply "to not suffer"; in particular, among the things we consider life to be worth living for are art, human relationships, discovery, adventure, and so on—sensu lato beauty. "the good things".
necessary in the existence of beauty is pain—pain for oneself and pain for others. maybe in the far future, when we can e.g. simulate the entire biosphere on a supercomputer, this won't be true anymore (of course, for a lot of reasons, maybe it still will). but that's not gonna be any time soon, if ever. in the present world, the trade-off between beauty and ethics is real and unavoidable.
and the utilitarians say "(1) is more important than (2); tile the universe with wireheaded brains-in-vats and don't worry about what gets lost on the way there", and fascists say "(2) is more important than (1); build a society of nietzschean übermenschen doing Great Deeds". and of course you don't have to take either of these positions, but it's hard to see how to make an intermediate position philosophically coherent.
I admit that, at least in the current world, I think (1) is more important the (2) in most cases. but I am decidedly not ok with the long- or even middle-term consequences of prioritizing (1) exclusively.
and thus, the dismal thesis. the only possible just world is a dismal world, a world devoid of those things which make life worth living to begin with.
I am very very open to being proven wrong.

6 Rules that Patients Should Follow When Managing Their Pain
Do you suffer from pain? For those of us who suffer pain on a regular basis, we know how challenging it can be to manage. So, what is the best way to manage pain? We all seem to have our own opinions and advice, but what's the right course of action?
Unbearable pain can take a toll on your life. You may find yourself avoiding social situations or giving up hobbies because it makes it hard to concentrate, hard to talk, and even harder to enjoy yourself. But don't worry! There are many things that you can do to manage your pain.
What is Pain Management?
Pain management is the process by which pain is reduced or alleviated. The goal of pain management is to improve the quality of life for people who suffer from chronic or debilitating conditions.
It is better and more convenient to find a pain management clinic in your vicinity. By doing so, you will be able to get the care that you need quickly and efficiently. You'll find that the individuals in these clinics are uniquely trained to help you get your life back on track. Hence, there is no reason why you ever need to suffer in silence!
Here are the six fundamental rules that will help you manage your pain:
1. Identify Your Pain Triggers
People who suffer from chronic conditions often have specific things that trigger their pain. Common pain triggers include bright lights, loud noises, and strong smells. Everyone's a little different regarding their own triggers, so it's best to spend time thinking about what yours might be. Once you know what triggers the pain you feel, you can devise a plan to avoid them or minimize the impact they have on your every-day life.
2. Avoid Certain Things at All Costs
If there are specific things in life that bring you immediate relief (such as drugs), it's easy to become dependent on them - so much that you forget how they impact your life. Narcotics, such as painkillers, for example, often cause patients to feel drowsy and out of it when taking them. When taken too often or in large doses, these types of drugs can also do permanent damage to your organs. The main takeaway is that painkillers should be used sparingly and under doctor's orders only. You should also ensure that you take the medicines prescribed by your doctor and follow his/her instructions to a T (no cutting pills in half or doubling up on doses).
3. Make Changes in Your Daily Routine
The best way to manage chronic pain is through regular exercise. Did you know that starting an exercise program can be just as beneficial as starting an antidepressant? It's true! People who exercise regularly (even if only for 20 minutes at a time) find that they can manage their pain better than before. Exercise has also been known to help people sleep better, which is crucial for the health of those who are suffering from chronic pain.
4. Develop Healthy Coping Strategies
When you suffer from mental distress caused by physical pain, it can be easy to give up and close yourself off from society. However, learning how to cope with the negative thoughts and emotions associated with your condition will not only make life easier - but less painful as well! Some helpful coping mechanisms include deep breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga.
5. Communicate Your Needs
No one knows how you feel like you do, so you must speak up if things seem too difficult or painful (such as in the event of a flare-up). If someone asks how you are doing and you say "fine," they might assume that everything is okay, when in reality it is not. By communicating with friends and loved ones about your condition, they can help support your efforts towards managing your pain.
6. Live Life to the Fullest!
Imagine a life in which every day revolved around managing your pain in order to get through another 24 hours. This can be a very frustrating way to live - and it's certainly not the life you should have. Chronic pain can make going through your daily activities difficult, but don't let it stand in your way of living a full and happy life!
One best way to deal with your pain is to surround yourself with positive people, avoid negative thinking, and seek help from a pain specialist. A support system of family and friends is essential, but so is a support system of healthcare professionals - so don't be afraid to ask for help!
Overall, don't forget to seek help if the pain gets too difficult to manage. While self-administered pain management strategies are critical, it might be the case that your pain is more severe and difficult to handle than you think. In such instances, you can find pain management doctors who will be able to review your pain and conditions and prescribe the correct treatment for you.
The Different Types of Pain Treatment
Whatever pain treatment you are looking for, you can find it at an accredited and reputable pain management clinic in your area. Some centers specialize in back pain treatment, leg pain treatment, neck pain treatment, and many more!
You should choose the center which has an experienced doctor who has treated many patients successfully before. You can read online reviews or ask around to ensure that the facility you have in mind is indeed one that you can go to with confidence.
Here are the types of pain management treatment you can partake in:
1. Medication
This is one of the most common types of pain management treatments. A pain specialist will prescribe you medication and possibly other supplements to reduce the pain that you are experiencing. Only doctors can offer you prescription drugs and ensure that you take the proper dosage for your condition.
It is also important to note that treatment without medication is possible. For instance, you can utilize off-the-counter topical pain relief cream. Yes! Topical pain cream is one of the best and most effective home remedies to cure minor discomforts, such as back pain, leg pain, headaches, and much more!
2. Injections
Most doctors will utilize injection treatments when oral or topical medication is no longer effective in treating a patient’s pain. Treatments involving injection concern administering medicine directly into the source of the problem to reduce the pressure on nerves, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc. However, if not done correctly, it might cause further injury! So, ensure that you go to an accredited professional for a procedure like this one.
3. Surgery
If your injury or illness cannot be treated effectively with medication or injections, surgery may be necessary to improve function and decrease the source of pain. Not all types of pain management surgery are considered to be major surgery. Some surgeries, such as joint replacement, can even be done on an outpatient basis, where patients return home shortly after the procedure is completed.
4. Physical Therapy
One alternative method in treating pain which is usually prescribed in unison with medication is physical therapy. Physical therapy is designed to help restore movement in joints, muscles, and other tissues in the body. Therapists may use ice or heat to reduce pain and swelling, and they will teach you about exercises you can participate in at home to improve your strength, coordination, and flexibility.
5. Spinal Cord Stimulation
Some patients' conditions benefit from spinal cord stimulation (SCS). This type of therapy is similar to the operational outcomes of a cardiac pacemaker and is often used to treat chronic pelvic and abdominal pain in women. SCS is also regularly used to treat certain types of back pain. In treatment involving SCS, a small device that delivers electrical impulses along the spinal cord is implanted into a patient’s body to block pain signals from traveling to his or her brain.
6. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
TENS is another type of non-drug therapy which is often used to alleviate pain. The TENS system applies low-voltage electrical pulses via electrodes which are placed on the patient’s the skin. The stimulation causes the body to block pain messages from traveling through the spinal cord and to the brain. While it doesn't work for everyone, for some people, this TENS therapy offers substantial benefits.
7. Psychological Therapy
To improve your condition, you can also take support from psychological therapy. The therapist will guide you in stress-management skills and coping strategies to help you deal with the pain every day. It is beneficial for people who are suffering from chronic back pain or other long-term conditions.
8. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of therapy which can be administered by a psychologist or psychiatrist. During cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, you will learn to identify and manage problematic emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that may exacerbate the pain that you feel. For instance, if a negative mood worsens your arthritis symptoms, you might work with your psychiatrist or psychologist to develop strategies for managing stress and improving your outlook on life.
9. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is another alternative method of pain management treatment that mainly uses needles inserted in designated points around the body to help control pain and correct body imbalances.
10. Massage Therapy
Massage is not just for relaxation but can also reduce muscle tension and knots that contribute to pain! It's good when used along with other therapies such as chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations.
11. Yoga
It is not just for relaxation, but it can also stretch and strengthen muscles, promoting better posture to reduce pain! It's good when used along with other therapies such as chiropractic or osteopathic manipulations.
12. Mindfulness Meditation
Chronic pain may leave you feeling powerless over your own mind and body, but mindfulness meditation can help change this state of mind by teaching you how to take charge of your thoughts and sensations - even if they're negative! Research shows that the simple practice of meditation can be very effective in reducing one's experience of pain, as well as one’s levels of depression and anxiety.
13. Exercise
Obviously, the best preventative measure to take in avoiding pain is to avoid getting injured or sick in the first place, but this isn't always possible. This being said, if you do become injured, don't just sit around and wait for your body to heal on its own- take it upon yourself to be proactive and get moving! Research shows that exercise can minimize chronic pain by triggering the release of endorphins, which are your brain's built-in natural painkillers. Additionally, physical activity can change the way your brain responds to painful sensations over time.
As mentioned above, there are numerous types of treatments which you could partake in to manage your pain. It is important to remember that no method is superior to others - what works for a person depends on his or her unique circumstances! Be sure to discuss your options with your doctor to find what would work best for you. However, if you aren't satisfied with the results of your treatment(s), see your doctor for another option - don't be shy! Remember that there's no harm in trying something new when it comes to curing pain.
Conclusion
Different types of pain management treatment work for different individuals. Only you and your doctor can determine what treatment options will work best for you. Although it's not easy to alleviate chronic pain, always remember that relief is possible - even if it requires trying different therapies until you find one that works!
Don't let pain control your life! You have the power to improve your physical and mental well-being by finding the proper treatment for you. Ensure that you seek help from a medical expert who will take the time to listen to you and, consider your needs and preferences, and provide you with an individualized care plan.

Jean-Francois Geschwind Cancer Advice Everyone Should Be Aware Of
Jean-Francois Geschwind Expert tips provider. It is impossible to control everything. Even when you have tried your best to prevent something, things happen. Cancer is not a welcomed guest! If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, do the research. Find out what has benefited others. Read the article below to get some practical advice:
Cancer is very difficult for both the patient and his family. You should be checking in with your doctor regularly, as new ways to treat and even cure cancers are always being developed.
Exposure to too much sun can cause cancer, skin cancer is perhaps the most common type. Try to wear hats to shield your face from the sun, and be sure to always use sunscreen in order to help prevent getting cancer.
When you first receive your cancer diagnosis, get as many facts as you can about it. Try to gather as much useful, basic information as you can about the type of cancer you have. What kind of cancer is it? Where is it? Has it spread? How will it be treated?
Quit smoking immediately if you have cancer. There are some cancer sufferers who do not quit smoking as they are of the mindset that it no longer matters now that they are already ill. The cigarettes' carcinogens may greatly decrease your body's chance of fully recovering.
Seeking support from a support group is important when you are battling cancer and getting help. You will be able to learn valuable information from people who have already been in your shoes. They will be able to tell you what they went through and what things really worked for them.
Try to avoid alternative and holistic remedies alone to fight cancer if you have it. Steve Jobs is a great example of holistic remedies failing. Medical professionals insist that modern medicine and surgery would have saved his life. It can save your life too, if you have cancer. Don't replace modern medicine with voodoo.
Numerous studies have been conducted on garlic and its many medicinal qualities, but one of garlic's best medical benefits is that it helps to eliminate the cancer-causing cells produced in the body. People who eat garlic are able to kill upwards of 139% more tumor cells in the body than people who do not eat it.
Jean-Francois Geschwind Expert tips provider. Simple arbohydrates can actually increase your risk of getting cancer, but complex carbs, like whole grains, will reduce your risk significantly. The germ, bran and endosperm of the whole grains are very rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals and can help you to prevent cancer in your stomach, colon and other areas of the body.
Because they are so rich in glutathione, avocados are a great cancer-preventing food you can eat. The reason avocados work to prevent cancer is that their powerful antioxidants wage a war against the free radicals floating around in your body. Eliminating free radicals is how you work to eliminate cancer cells.
Grilling or steaming your food more as opposed to frying it can help you prevent against cancer. Because you will be preparing your food in a healthier fashion, you can eliminate excess weight gain and thus help to prevent cancer cells from growing inside of your body and eventually forming dangerous tumors.
What you think is going to happen, and what truly manifests, are often two different animals. It is important to let those who are supporting you know that you appreciate all they are doing for you.
You should always seek second opinions, even if you believe your oncologist is the best in his or her field. It's only an opinion you're seeking; you never know when someone made a mistake or failed to mention a possible treatment option to you. Getting multiple opinions will simply give you multiple sources of information.
Jean-Francois Geschwind Top service provider. To help reduce the risk of cancer, use a filter on your kitchen faucet. There are a variety of cancer-causing chemicals in tap water, including arsenic and chromium. A filter drastically cuts down on these contaminants and may even encourage you to drink more water, which has a number of other benefits for your health.
Stay informed throughout your treatment process if you are currently dealing with cancer. The worst thing you could do is ignore your treatment or fail to care. You want to know what you are taking, what therapy you are doing, and how these things are intended to help treat your disease.
Beware that acne is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Many people do not realize this and chalk their acne up to hormones. There are many over-the-counter acne treatments that are effective for you skin. If your acne is very bad, your doctor may be able to prescribe a stronger medication.
When you have cancer, you should listen to your body. When your body tells you to rest, take the time to take a nap. When you feel out of energy, try eating a healthier diet. Take the time to listen to your body, and do what it is telling you that it needs to have done.
Keep up a healthy, active lifestyle. Eat healthy, nutritious foods and exercise when possible. Keeping active can help you cope better with treatment and lead to a longer life. Also be sure to get enough sleep, which will help alleviate some of the stress of cancer treatment and fend off fatigue.
Jean-Francois Geschwind Expert tips provider. Quit smoking or using tobacco. Smoking has been proven to cause cancer and it can also increase the odds of cancer recurring. If you have tried to quit, but have not been successful, work with your doctor to figure out other possible methods to help you quit. Each person is different, so try all options from patches to hypnosis until you find one that works for you.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to control everything. Cancer, certainly, is not a welcomed guest! Hopefully, this article has provided you with some practical advice in the fight against cancer. Apply the suggestions that will help you or your loved one to do just that!

Fueling an Epidemic Individuals Sharing Opioids with Pals and Household
It is no secret that the opioid disaster is without doubt one of the most urgent fashionable public well being crises hitting communities nationwide. Whereas habit to prescription ache medicines results in tens of hundreds of deaths a 12 months, a brand new research seemed on the position individuals sharing their prescriptions with others might play in feeding this drug epidemic. A second annual research commissioned by Stericycle, a medical and unsafe waste disposal firm, requested 1,200 Individuals about their prescription treatment disposal habits. Whereas 75 % reported they believed sharing or promoting unused prescriptions contributed to the nation's habit epidemic, 1 in 10 admitted they've provided or given their meds to members of the family and mates for medical and leisure use. Simply how massive of an influence does this have on the opioid disaster? Dr. Joseph Ladapo, an internist at UCLA Well being, informed Healthline that this can be a widespread however underreported actuality of how Individuals have been mishandling their prescribed drugs. "This sharing of medications goes underreported because people may have concerns about their privacy or of their activities being disclosed and potentially exposing themselves to risk. I do think it's pretty common," Ladapo mentioned, who wasn't affiliated with the brand new research. "I've spoken with patients who have engaged in that activity. I've heard people say they have offered out of kindness. I don't think this is a problem of ill intent. I think many people probably mean well when they engage in this activity," he added. Nonetheless, Ladapo stresses that this specific drawback underscores an pressing want for higher outreach and intervention efforts to quell the continued progress of the opioid epidemic.
A serious disaster
The opioid disaster has been an increasing drawback in the USA. In 2015, drug overdoses resulted in general, in keeping with the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention (CDC). Should you zero in on that quantity additional, greater than 63.1 % -- or 33,091 deaths -- concerned opioids. Simply two years later, the variety of opioid-related deaths climbed to 47,600, or 67.eight % of all drug overdose deaths, the . Simply how a lot does sharing prescriptions contribute to this regarding pattern? Ladapo says it is arduous to quantify. There is no conclusive analysis on the market that addresses that particular query, however he says it is protected to say it does play a serious position. "We do know that something like 2 out of 3 people who abuse opioids obtain them at some point from a friend or a family member, so in the face of that high prevalence, it's really hard to reach another conclusion other than that it is certainly not helping," he mentioned. Like Ladapo, Josanne Pagel, MPAS, PA-C, MDiv, DFAAPA, govt director of doctor assistant providers on the Cleveland Clinic Well being System, informed Healthline she suspects the quantity of people that go previous official -- and protected -- healthcare channels to share opioids with others might be a lot larger than these statistics. "I have a higher personal experience as a provider, hearing from patients happens more commonly than not," Pagel mentioned, who additionally wasn't affiliated with this research. "First and foremost, a lot of these people want to help their family member, help their friend. No one wants to see anyone in pain. Sometimes it might take a long time to get a physician or a provider, and some people don't feel there is any harm in giving one pill to alleviate someone's pain," she mentioned. She added, "It also might be some peer pressure among friends. It's 'cool' to share leftover prescriptions, and some people are explicitly using them to get a little buzz." Basically, Pagel says it is a multifaceted, difficult drawback. There is no single cause why individuals misuse opioids and share them with others. However whereas this conduct does assist gas the opioid disaster, Pagel believes it is "secondary to overprescribing." "The first component is providers need to be more responsible in how they prescribe. They need to be thinking twice about whether this is the best recourse for treatment. That being said, I think yes, the second major cause of the crisis is sharing," she mentioned.
'A nationwide situation we have to tackle from a number of angles'
A scarcity of schooling is an enormous a part of the issue. Cindy Miller, president and CEO-elect of Stericycle Inc., mentioned essentially the most placing factor to her in regards to the research was the excessive variety of individuals -- 86 % -- who mentioned they felt comfy asking their physician or pharmacist about methods to dispose of those medication, however that two-thirds mentioned they do not know if their pharmacy permits them to return unused prescriptions. "This shows an apparent gap between people who want to identify opportunities to help curb the opioid epidemic and those who already have made the effort," she wrote in an electronic mail to Healthline. "It's clear there is still room for improvement in education around disposing of unused prescriptions, including opioids, and that consumers will be receptive to this education." Pagel says lots of people throw their medicines within the trash, which could sound innocuous however truly is not. She says many individuals on the lookout for their repair undergo others' trash. "Just tossing it out is contributing to sustaining the crisis. It's not helping people to stop the addiction," she defined. "We have a lot of unused medications that are just floating around there." Miller wrote that instructional outreach wants to enhance to appropriate the misinformation on the market in regards to the do's and don'ts of disposing opioids. "It is critical that education come from a variety of sources and is inclusive of multiple topic areas. These topics should include the impact on the environment -- i.e. informing consumers of the issues with flushing opioids -- as well as how to keep opioids out of the wrong hands (i.e. providing more information on where consumers can properly dispose of opioids)," she wrote. "This education can go beyond healthcare. For example, some HR departments at organizations are offering items such as mail-back envelopes for unused prescriptions to their employees to help fight the opioid epidemic and contribute to education on proper disposal solutions. This truly is a nationwide issue we need to address from multiple angles," Miller wrote.
Altering public consciousness
Ladapo provides that he does suppose public consciousness campaigns in regards to the opioid disaster have damaged by way of. From his personal expertise as a doctor, he is seen sufferers expressing trepidation about utilizing opioids. He says now, greater than in his early profession, persons are declining opioids and asking about different kinds of remedy. "Doctors have also evolved in the course of my career. Doctors are being more sensitive to really communicating with patients about the risk of opioids," Ladapo mentioned. "That being said, most of that communication is about the patient's risk of taking these drugs. Most doctors don't talk about the risk associated with sharing," he mentioned. Pagel stresses that extra suppliers want to provide individuals clear disposal directions together with prescriptions. She says there are "two lines of defense" that must be emphasised: Prescribers and pharmacists ought to hand out disposal luggage and directions for tips on how to do away with these medication when not wanted, and there must be extra community-specific schooling efforts about what to do with opioids. "I think this is a big call to arms to inform community leaders, to inform family members, to inform patients receiving these prescriptions, to store them and properly dispose of them with ease," she mentioned. Miller echoed these ideas. Whereas the brand new research does not contact on why so many individuals share these medicines, it affords an vital reminder that issues want to vary. "We do know this is a very dangerous habit due to the addictive properties of many of these drugs, including opioids," she wrote. "It's important to make sure friends and family only receive prescription medication from a prescribing physician, and that consumers properly dispose of any unused medication to make sure they don't fall into the wrong hands."
