I watched Blonde yesterday before Ana’s nomination for Best Actress was announced earlier today. After the movie was over, I thought to myself, “This woman deserves a nomination.”

Blonde itself in it’s entirety was a complete disaster. It’s a work of fiction based on a book that spins the life of Marilyn Monroe into a whirlwind of disgusting sexual personas, horrid backstories and disgraceful ideas on who Marilyn was. (On my letterboxd you can see my full review, link in my bio.) I will say, that because it is a fictional tale, I didn’t take it to heart of how disrespectful it was to the late Marilyn Monroe. We all put Marilyn on a pedestal. She was a gifted actress and that is why she remains a staple in Hollywood today. I think the book was written to shine a light on what could be the nasty side of making a human so favorable, that it becomes rotten due to human greed of wanting someone to be so glamorous, so perfect. It’s all about perception. It’s a mirror of what the media and many people in Marilyn’s life had done to her. (Yet we’ll never know the truth.) Plastering her trauma’s for entertainment and twisting them for a conversation starter or a vision of dark fantasy. And no one was willing to put a stop to her story being stretched into a movie like this. Ironic, isn’t it?

The movie has stellar arthouse cinematography, a gripping score and a wonderful performance from Ana de Armas, who proves her acting chops that is moving. It’s unfortunate her talent was wasted on a script that didn’t deserve to be green lit but again, her performance is worthy of recognition. She is full throttle in this portrayal. So this is my congratulations to a performance to someone who delivered great efforts. For the movie itself…I don’t think so.

The Freddie Mercury biopic maybe had 10% accurate description, Elvis was 🙃. Marilyn Monroe one was trash as well Hollywood should just really give up. They have made no good biopic in the last 10 years.
