Without so much as a stutter in his rhythm, he sat up onto his knees, bringing your body with his and putting you on full display for the rest of your partners.

"This is a lesson to you, too; don't try to keep things from us - if you want to fuck our girl, you can fuck her." The call of his name brought his eyes to yours, breathless groans escaping him as Felix licked at him as if he were a popsicle on a hot summer day.

You sniffled, blown out pupils swimming in the sea of your watery eyes, "I-I'm so sorry, Channie - I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry!"

His heart clenched in time with his abdomen, hips canting as best they could with Hyunjin and Jeongin keeping him still. "I'm sorry, princess, you hear me? Fuck- I'm so sorry, baby."

"Good kitten," Minho grunted, his free hand wrapping around your hip to the apex of your thighs, his skilled fingers finding your clit easily, "now, come for us."

There wasn't a singular word to describe the sensations that shot through your veins; euphoria, relief, satisfaction, all you could feel was the wave of your orgasm crashing around you and drowning you in the muffled sounds of your own screams.

Through the small talk and pre-shower wipe downs - some of the boys dispersing to shower while others searched for snacks - Chris noticed Minho bundling up the soiled blanket while Changbin cradled your sleeping form in his arms on the couch, murmuring soft words he wasn't able to catch.

"She's okay," Minho hummed, catching Chris's soft gaze, "we're going to let her rest for a minute, then when she wakes up Changbin's going to make sure she uses the bathroom before anything else."

He nodded understandingly, stretching his arms and rubbing absentmindedly at his wrists.

"You want to cuddle with her."

Chris jolted, eyes widening, "What? I didn't say-"

"You don't have to say it, you do it all the time after sex, Chan," he rolled his eyes, a loving smirk playing at his lips, "it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Just..." Sighing, Minho ventured over to the chair he still sat in, "Stop being shy about needing love, okay? This isn't about some stupid rule or 'fuck' schedule - you need to know that there isn't any shame in putting your needs first. You have eight partners, which means you have eight people who are open and ready to give you the love you need, Hyung."

Planting a quick kiss on his lips, Minho disappeared down the hall toward the laundry room, leaving Chris to settle with his words.

Nodding softly to himself, he made his way toward Changbin and swapped roles quietly, accepting a temple kiss from his fellow rapper before he headed into the kitchen to join whoever occupied the space.

100 Albums To Understand Muse - Part 12 [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]

THE SMITHS Hatful of Hollow (1984) Morrissey's lyrics and quirky verses are laced with literature and sharp humour, while Marr's guitar is subtle and bold. At their core, this was one of the most important UK indie/guitar-pop bands of the 1980s. This album is an edit of early singles AB sides + studio shows, and includes ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’, covered by Muse. -I

THE SOFT MACHINE Volume Two (1969) The second masterpiece by a representative of the Canterbury sound. Songwriter Kevin Ayers left the band and Hugh Hopper joined to create a more experimental jazz-rock sound. The thrilling ‘Hibou, Anemone and Bear’ and the vivid interplay between the various parts is truly exciting. Robert Wyatt's voice is also excellent. -S

SONIC YOUTH Dirty (1992) A lucid alternative rock album by Sonic Youth with Butch Vig of Nevermind (Nirvana), full of sharp sounds in sync with the atmosphere of 1992, with many direct melodies for their work, and recommended as an introduction to Sonics. Ian MacKaye of Fugazi also joined the band. -K

STEVE REICH Music For 18 Musicians (1978) Matthew's 33 dubbing sessions for Glorious were influenced by contemporary music giant Reich. This is a 1976 release, a well-organised ensemble of 18 musicians, including four pianos and four female chorus members, as well as violins, cellos and other stringed instruments. It is minimalist music, but its richness of flavour is boundless. -M

SUEDE Suede (1993) The band drove a wedge between 1992 and 1993 with a series of three sensational singles (included on their debut album) that were steeped in traditional British melancholy and decadence, driving a new wedge into the UK scene at a time when US alternative music was taking the lead. The entwining of the bewitching voice of Brett Anderson and the brilliant, poetic and at the same time passionate guitar of Bernard Butler is a masterpiece. -I

SUN RA Disco 3000 (1978) Although the title says ‘disco’, this is not disco music. It is an improvised, experimental session that defies categorisation and falls into the category of ‘jazz’ but is not orthodox jazz. If you want to listen to this magnificent masterpiece that expresses the universe through sound now, we recommend the two-disc set that includes unreleased audio. -M

SYSTEM OF A DOWN Toxicity (2001) Eccentric mixed metal from an Armenian-American band. Their second album, released in 2001, was their big breakthrough. Singer Serge also invited Muse to join his label and cited Absolution in the shortlist awards, where he was a selector. Matthew, on the other hand, has also acknowledged their influence. -H

30 SECONDS TO MARS A Beautiful Lie (2005) Led by the handsome actor Jared Leto, the band's romantic, emo guitar rock has a lot in common with Muse. On their second album, their biggest hit to date, the band tried their hand at an epic, story-telling concept that could be likened to progressive rock. A series of single hits were released, mainly on US rock radio stations. -H

Since there's a few of you around now that are still getting into some of the deeper cuts, I thought I'd put together a post highlighting some of the oft-forgotten obscure material for you to check out. Gonna stick it under a cut, 'cause there's a fair bit and Youtube links take up a lot of space on the dash.

Fasten your seatbelts, hold onto your hats, let's go yeah?

First up we have The Escapades of Futura 2000, lyrics by the man himself with music written & played by the Clash. Futura was the rapper on Overpowered By Funk, and also a graffiti artist who accompanied the band on the Combat Rock tour across the US painting stage backdrops live through the gigs. This particular upload is the 12" mix, which has a good extra minute over the version released last year on The People's Hall.

Here we've got the complete double-sided 12" 19-minute experience of This Is Radio Clash - the track we all know and love to open, then the more commonly remembered B-side Radio Clash (almost identical, not quite the same), then things get real funky with Outside Broadcast, and Radio Five ties it all together. Those last two have never seen a reissue on any compilation whatsoever, probably the most obscure tracks in their entire official discography.

This one's Robber Dub, a remix of Bankrobber from Mikey Dread (not to be confused with Rockers Galore, his other remix that actually features him on vocals). Featured on Super Black Market Clash but interestingly not in the "complete" Sound System box set, an omission that's always perplexed me.

Speaking of, I'd thoroughly recommend checking out both of the mentioned collections if you're not familiar, between Super Black Market & Sound System you've got every officially-released song other than those two Radio Clash extras - so, with that in mind, let's dive into the real offcuts that never even made it onto a record.

How's about seven and a half minutes of Topper playing around with a drumkit & piano to start us off? Some people still don't believe this is even The Clash, that someone scrounged up some random sounds and stuck it on a bootleg, but that's bollocks because I'm pretty sure bits of it ended up in Hell W10, their endearingly crap short film from '81 (watch it here, it's a 50-minute London crime drama). What people are wrong about is that it was ever going to be on Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg, because this is the real tracklist; relatedly, there's alternate mixes of most of those tracks around if you care to look for them, they're not hard to find, except for the high-quality acetate rip that surfaced two years ago that has been scrubbed off the face of the fucking internet, from the 20 minutes I just spent searching it seems even Internet Archive wasn't able to withstand the might of CBS. Anyway...

OK, so technically this one has made it to a record, but that record was the Vanilla Tapes bonus disc of the 2004 reissue of London Calling, it never actually got beyond demo stage. Honestly I doubt they ever really expected or intended it to, sounds to me like the band having fun in the studio, but fun it is. There's actually a few demo-only Vanilla Tapes tracks I could stick here, but this is long as fuck already so instead I will simply give you the lot to peruse at your leisure.

Sticking with demos that eventually got an obscure release, this one is from the Give 'Em Enough Rope sessions but wasn't heard until the On Broadway compilation in '91. It's a solid number of course, they hardly put a foot wrong, but it's nothing groundbreaking.

This is from that same compilation, from the same sessions, it's a cover of the classic soul tune and I like it. Understated, gentle but with that pained passion in the vocals Mick carries so well, and that nice subtle bass is a sweet touch.

Our last couple of tracks are live numbers, and this one's a special one-off performance with the great Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, from the 10th June date of their infamous Bond's residency. He wrote it specifically to perform with the band, six minutes of cantankerous complaining about just about any ideology you care to name while the band (and their sound man, gotta credit those perfectly-timed dub echoes) give a strident backing. Topper was on fucking fire for those gigs, just listen to that kick drum.

And finally let's close out where they began, way back in '76 with Keith Levene. This one's probably my favourite of their earliest offcuts, but personally I prefer an even earlier version of it that Youtube doesn't seem to have, from their third ever gig (and first known recording) at the classic Screen on the Green punk showcase. Five of the thirteen tracks on that setlist never made it to the studio, plus it includes the original lyrics to I'm So Bored With You, and it's all here.

RAR Musings #31: A look in the mirror; Social Roleplay

In my time frequenting tabletop game spaces on reddit, I've seen a lot of trash. People jaded with DND who pivot to making their own game rather than explore other options (hey that was me), asking if anyone has any ideas about unique mechanics or certifying if their idea has ever been done before, and so, so many people asking for recommendations on systems that handle social mechanics. But lately I stumbled on a post asking for full review of their design PDF, and I was shocked, and in no small way dismayed, to see an incredible number of my own design philosophies and ideas reflected, some not quite there without some needed polish or refinement, but still others that gave me the notion that they were better than what I had.

Distraught, I had some back and forth with the designer, pointing out certain issues, but mostly focusing on his 'roleplay' system. It took some time, but I would eventually identify the line between his roleplay philosophy, and my own that stemmed from games like World of Darkness. It's not that his is wrong, but the idea there could be a wrong way to go about it is precisely where the line falls.

Road and Ruin fundamentally discourages that there is a binary morality. Every culture and tradition has beliefs they take for granted, that are seen as strange or appalling to others, held up by a spectrum of individuals who are each bastions of independence in their own right. World of Darkness itself once held that a character should regain their meta-currency, Willpower, in bites when the character affirms their virtues in a way that requires effort, up to once a session or chapter, but all WP when the character entertains a vice in a willfully self-destructive way that causes problems for the group, but in later editions equated the two, such that a virtuous person could sabotage with a flaw, while a flawed individual could sabotage with a virtue. This other person's system, after much digging, seems to hold the opposite; that players, and their characters, are either fundamentally virtuous, and so shy away from vice behavior, or, more often, there is simply no advantage to roleplaying sub-optimal behavior, and so they just simply... wouldn't. They wanted to encourage players to engage in this behavior (whereas I have to drag my players kicking and screaming off their vices, who believe getting to engage in this behavior with no lasting consequences is a power fantasy), and on it's own, that's a fine objective. The problem I had with the system was that for a character to benefit from their virtues AT ALL, they would have to activate their vice, sabotaging the setting more often than actually advancing through it, and benefitting from said virtue in tiny bites, compared to carpetbombing with their vices for maximum consequence, only rewarded at the discretion of the DM if it was "good enough".

At the very least, I developed a concept that designer didn't want, and I might choose to use for Road and Ruin's faith-based builds, but it still stuck out to me in an odd way. Their "rock paper scissors" combat initiative system is profound, using mechanics I had only barely conceived of myself a few months prior, in ways that felt like if only I were to steal them, I could leap ahead in design of my own game, but then casting to the side a roleplaying system they insist has succeeded with flying colours in their own playtest groups, while denying my very real, very lived experience with players who would shred his system to pieces due to gaping vulnerabilities. Granted, his system only needed to bridge the gap from combat to combat, as a combat-based simulation game, and not a storytelling one, but it very much feels like I passed my doppelganger on the street, or maybe a weird, better me from an alternate universe, only to see through the veneer and catch sight of a few critical flaws that undermined everything else I thought was important.

Road and Ruin's 'morality' system, determined by Beliefs and measured in Conviction, is one component of a larger social system, alongside Reputation. A belief, defined by Law or Tenet, Tradition, Interpretation, and/or Compulsion, defines a character's instinctual response to any situation. They can fight it, pivoting to entertain a different belief, but depending on their success, there may be hesitation, or, often, a tell at the very least.

Even before RAR shifted toward a game of resource attrition, social play was measured in Spirit, spent to give commands to allies, emotionally express themselves and compel a change in others. It's also used in bargains and contracts with demons and spirits, and the initial idea was to treat it like a health bar that can drive far below zero, inflicting situational penalties for every span, waivable with spending even a single additional Spirit, in a death spiral of emotional exhaustion.

A Belief's Conviction score determines what advantage the character gets in situations where communicating that belief may have a positive influence, as well as their resistance to influence from others. It also determines the difficulty of acting against their true selves; a roll to act in opposition to their beliefs is subject to a penalty based on that Conviction score as well, and failing the roll results in hesitation in an initiative check, buying potentially several seconds of shock and fumbling important actions, or at the least reveals something about the character's true beliefs, unable to disguise their emotions and intent. Reputation plays a hand by connecting together faces, names, and actions, that the character in question may have strong feelings about, as well as allows you to wield influence you may otherwise not deserve, but that your target believes in. Conviction can also be damaged through repeated neglect, and broken to introduce a semi-persistent Doubt, and possibly even be made to produce and grow a new Belief altogether.

These mechanics are important to social play for several reasons. A warrior's beliefs may shield him from the effects of fear or surprise, while a merchant or noble with a bad poker face can send long-planned secrets up in smoke. A fervent zealot isn't likely to be convinced to betray their cult, but if you can sow a deception in their mind, that you are a new member of the cult, their zeal in faith may extend to even offering you assistance in your schemes. But above all, the morality-ambiguous nature of Beliefs means that there can be real social conflicts, between two groups who believe themselves to be in the right, and, from an outside perspective, both very may well be. It allows players to more clearly define their character's desires, as well as features a mechanical system for benefitting from those beliefs, whether you're a hero whose belief in doing no wrong conflicts with the horrors they've visited upon others, or a criminal whose dedication to self-interest leaves them questioning when they need to dive in to save the day.

So many stories become so much more interesting when characters are treated like living, breathing things, that can change and grow, and who have depth and nuance. While not an excusal of real-life atrocities, a virtual exploration of the horrors of belief can be a safe environment to gain perspective, in a guided experience toward doing what someone else might do, and thinking how someone else might think.

My Demon: Theories and Analysis for Eps 11-12 Part 1

Hello Readers!

To enhance readability, I've decided to split my theories and analysis posts into two parts! I understand my posts can be lengthy, but they are designed to be comprehensive.

Eps 11-12 were a solid 100/10 in my book! I was truly amazed!! Some of my theories were completely off the mark, while others were almost spot on! I got the big picture right but got some of the finer details wrong. It's worth noting that this writer can be somewhat unpredictable. However, I find this unpredictability fun, as it keeps me interested and motivates me to dig deeper into the narrative so I can make more accurate theories.

For those who prefer to skip my general thoughts about the show, please feel free to jump to Section 2, where I provide an in-depth analysis of the events in Gu Won's past! I'll be posting part 2 of this post either later today or tomorrow!

Ok, thinking caps on! Time to analyze and theorize!

Section 1: General Thoughts

One of the biggest issues I have with this writer is how she tries to push her religious views onto viewers. "My Demon" almost feels like one big Sunday School session. I mean, look at the religious messages conveyed throughout this show. If you believe in God, you're promised both earthly and afterlife rewards. On the flip side, if you don't adhere to God's rules, you're destined for Hell. Even if you simply don't believe in God, the consequence is the same — Hell. How can this be considered a genuine "choice"?

It feels more like an ultimatum than a choice, where the alternatives are either conformity to a specific belief system or facing extreme consequences. The narrative doesn't allow for a nuanced exploration of diverse perspectives or individual beliefs. It's as if the characters are presented with an illusion of choice when, in reality, the options are quite rigid and the stakes are exceptionally high. This approach not only oversimplifies complex matters of faith and spirituality but also fails to acknowledge the richness of human diversity in thought and belief.

While I thoroughly enjoy the great acting, the comedic elements, and the chemistry between the leads in "My Demon," I found myself increasingly bothered by the writer's persistent attempts to incorporate and emphasize her religious views. The show's success in creating an engaging narrative is somewhat overshadowed by the writer's inclination to use the storyline as a platform for promoting specific religious beliefs.

This overt agenda feels not only unnecessary but also distracting. Instead of allowing viewers to appreciate the characters and the plot for what they are, it tends to veer into didactic territory, almost like a sermon disguised as entertainment. While I understand that personal beliefs can influence creative work, there is a fine line between subtlety and heavy-handedness. In the case of "My Demon," it feels like the latter, and it detracts from the overall viewing experience.

In sharing these thoughts, I want to acknowledge that these are just my two cents, coming from the perspective of an atheist watching this show. I appreciate the diverse range of beliefs and opinions that viewers bring to the table, and my intention is not to invalidate anyone's faith or enjoyment of the content. Rather, I'm offering my personal observations on how the heavy emphasis on religious themes affects my experience as a viewer.

Section 2: The Past

Section 2.1:  Rodion Raskolnikov of the Joseon Dynasty

If you've read my "My Demon" posts, you know I often draw parallels between the themes and characters in "My Demon" and those in Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." The writer of "My Demon" takes many inspirations from this novel. Despite its title, "Crime and Punishment" doesn't really focus on the act of the crime but delves more into the intricate aftermath—Raskolnikov's internal struggles, guilt, and moral conflict. Similarly, "My Demon," particularly in Eps 11-12, echoes these themes.

In a nutshell, "Crime and Punishment" follows Rodion Raskolnikov, who commits murder believing it serves the greater good. However, his guilt intensifies, leading to self-isolation and nightmares. Raskolnikov's journey towards redemption begins after he falls in love with Sonya, paralleling events in "My Demon." Sonya's love becomes his salvation, as she encourages him to face the consequences of his actions by confessing to the police. Eventually, Raskolnikov is sent to prison, and during his time there, he finally experiences guilt for the murders he committed. It's this newfound guilt that marks the beginning of his journey towards redemption. Random thought: Even when Seok Min was placed in prison, he displayed no remorse for hitting the pedestrian, and to this day, he remains unapologetic for killing his own mother. It seems like there's little hope of redemption for him haha.

Raskolnikov and Gu Won had something in common — they both liked taking shortcuts and were a bit lazy. In "Crime and Punishment," a servant scolded Raskolnikov for being lazy because he wasn't working. Raskolnikov said his version of "work" was thinking deeply. He was basically a freeloader, benefitting from the hard work of his mother and sister without really contributing financially in any way.

Gu Won's father thought he could use the matter at hand to his advantage. He obviously didn't want his son to marry a Catholic kisaeng so he suggested they sacrifice her for the greater good. For Gu Won's father, it was like killing two birds with one stone. He could eliminate Do Hee while protecting the village from ruins.

The idea of sacrificing one person for the greater good is a philosophical concept called "Utilitarianism" and was present in "Crime and Punishment." There are a lot of problems with utilitarianism (i.e ignoring the rights of individuals), but for the sake of brevity, I won't go into it here.

A question I would like to pose to my readers is do you think Gu Won's actions were justified? From my perspective, I don't think it was. Two wrongs don't make a right. Yes, it was wrong for the villagers to sacrifice Do Hee to protect their village, but it was also wrong for Gu Won to kill them all for it.

The way I see this whole situation is that Gu Won was one big privileged baby who didn't get this way and threw a temper tantrum (kinda like Seok Min). Since he never had to face any challenges or obstacles in his life, he never knew what it meant to struggle. In turn, this caused him to not know how to effectively handle negative emotions such as sadness, pain, disappointment, and anger.

This deficiency in emotional management is what prompted him to explode and kill all the villagers. It's a stark reminder of the consequences when one is shielded from life's challenges and lacks the necessary coping mechanisms. The ability to face challenges and navigate negative emotions is not only necessary for personal growth but also for developing the resilience needed to face adversity.

Rather than face the consequences of his actions (i.e killing the villagers) and the negative emotions stemming from the loss of Do Hee, Gu Won once again took the easy way out and ended his life. He thought he could run away from his problems and avoid being where God was, but he was about to be in for a surprise.

His declaration, "If heaven is where God dwells, I refuse to go there," now seems quite ironic. In the context of this show, God was depicted as being "everywhere", residing not only in Heaven but also in Hell. This notion was further exemplified by the portrayal of God living in a hut in the subway station, symbolizing the underworld/Hell. So, in a twist of fate, after Gu Won died and went to Hell, he ended up where God was too.

As I watched Gu Won's confession, it became evident he didn't feel remorse for murdering the villagers. It was almost as if his moral compass was backward or flipped. Instead of recognizing that loving someone isn't a crime and killing people is, Gu Won seems to think the opposite. In his current state, Gu Won is clearly struggling to place his guilt appropriately. He redirects his focus onto something less severe, his feelings for Do Hee, as a way to avoid confronting the more serious consequences of his violent actions toward the villagers.

For Gu Won to truly grasp the gravity of murdering the villagers, he first needs to disclose to Do Hee that she was the woman he loved in the past. Doing this would require significant personal growth on his part. Based on the preview for Ep 13, it would seem Gu Won may not share this information just yet, perhaps due to his hedonistic and avoidant tendencies.

Gu Won's desire for present happiness seems to drive his choice to withhold the information. This raises the question – is the happiness they share truly genuine, or is it merely a facade built on secrets and omissions? True happiness requires transparency and a willingness to confront the complexities of one's painful past, a reality Gu Won seems to overlook in his pursuit of happiness. He also needs to realize you can't have real happiness without sorrow or pleasure without pain. That's life!

By revealing to Do Hee she was the woman he loved in the past, he would be able to forgive himself for what happened to her. Do Hee would probably tell him that just like in the present, she willingly chose to sacrifice himself to save him and that he shouldn't blame himself for her death in the past. Her reassurance that he shouldn't bear the sole responsibility for her death may be instrumental in Gu Won finally forgiving himself and, in turn, facing the reality of his violent actions towards the villagers.

If Gu Won doesn't want a repeat of their tragic fates in the past, he must make different choices and break free of his bad habits like taking the easy way out of things and avoiding pain. It’s only then Gu Won can be saved from his immortal existence as a demon devil (to be human is to suffer and suffering is great haha) and he and Do Hee can have a more positive fate in the present!
