A great character who doesn't take shit from anyone but also has a lot going on. Kayce is the youngest son/child. He is a former Navy Seal and is married to a Native American woman. He has a child named Tate. Kayce would rather not be associated with his father or the Ranch. He would rather provide for his family in an honorable way. But, unfortunately, Kayce gets sucked back in. Jamie is the second oldest child/son. Now, this is a character where you kind of get the sense that he doesn't fit within the family. He is a lawyer who dreams of being Attorney General for Montana. Jamie desperately seeks his father's approval and love. He has a love/hate relationship with Beth, which can be funny at times and disturbing. Rip Wheeler is a worker at the Ranch and a love interest for Best. He is awesome. Beth and his relationship is sweet and also complex. They are a couple you want to root for. They are the superior couple on the show. The other supporting characters, such as the cowboys, are fun to watch and actually contribute to the show. They aren't just side characters. You are able to get a sense of who they are as individuals. The show is on the Paramount channel, or you can watch the first three seasons on the Peacock app.

Hm, I thought maybe I would know it when you talked about it, but still no! I looked it up, though, Beth seems like a hottie and so does Kayce. But idk if I'll get around to watching it. A/N: Ok so I had to write a creative writing piece for my first english paper. I saw this as a challenge to write my first fanfic. It is also kind of super descriptive because my professor said to keep the dialogue to a minimum, so I am sorry about that. I accept constructive criticism, so please dm me or comment anything if you want to!

Virgil Sanders opened the front door to be greeted by the brisk morning air. The start of a new season was ready to be tackled with no limitations holding him back. He was five foot nine with a raggedy purple fringe and deep brown eyes with black eyeliner smudged underneath. The teen hurried down the driveway with autumn leaves crunching beneath every step his black Converse took. He excitedly threw his purple backpack, covered in pins and patches, into the back seat of his black Jeep Wrangler.  After rolling his windows down and plugging in his phone to play some Mayday Parade, Virgil sped off to the rink for practice.

Immediately upon opening the metal double doors, Virgil was hit softly by a rush of cool air. Walking into the warm room of the rink to be greeted by familiar smiles and friendly faces was already making his day. He eagerly unzipped his bag and pulled out his pitch black skates with a new set of sharp purple Paramount blades attached. In the background, conversations between the other skaters could be heard, but he wasn’t paying attention enough to decipher them. The loud music playing in his single earbud was enough to take him away from the world, even if it were only for a moment. All he wanted was to hear his deep edges rip into the freshly cut ice as he shifted his weight from the inside and outside of his blade. Before that, Virgil would appreciate the smooth glide that he could flawlessly hold on the bright, pristine ice prior to the hockey teams that would soon come to dig and chop it up. He had nothing against the local hockey teams, but the disrespect they showed towards the rink staff, figure skaters, and even the ice itself was maddening. The holes they left were almost the sizes of baseballs, the ridges they cut so deep that simply gliding over them could no longer be an option, and the constant mouth guards left along the boards, still dripping soggily with warm saliva. The thought of the latter making him shudder with complete disgust.

Even with the cool chill radiating from the ice’s surface, Virgil was still fairly warm. Being a figure skater, you become almost immune to the cold and learn to never forget a jacket. The boy had forgotten only once and now arrives prepared wearing his trademark hoodie every practice, his favorite article of clothing in his closet. It was a black zip-up hoodie covered in purple and black plaid patches. The patches were scattered among the hoodie, lazily stitched on with white thread and on the front was his club’s logo, a storm cloud, embroidered with purple thread.

Eventually, the teen stopped by the boards to take a break, but that was when he felt eyes on him. He knew he wasn’t the only skater on that session, but the piercing stare he could feel, even with his back turned, was too much to let go. Virgil whipped around, stumbling over his skates as an old friend startled him. He didn’t even know if he could call Roman a friend because Roman Prince wasn’t a figure skater, he played center forward for the Sudro City Knights. The teen stood tall at six foot one and had neatly groomed mocha locks, his light brown eyes staring down the anxious boy. The cheap, damaged practice jersey he was wearing reeked of pure body odor from the weeks of wear without wash. After the couple seconds, which seemed like forever for poor Virgil, the taller boy leaned in close with a smug look plastered on his face.

“Hiya Dr Doom and Gloom.” Roman teased, leaning his stick up against the glass and sitting back onto the benches. “What is the purple ballerina going to dance to this year?  Hopefully another song from Beetlejuice the Musical! I do enjoy you looking even more edgy than usual.”

Virgil rolled his eyes, clearly not amused. “Oh, what a laugh Princey. Ya know, I would love to really see you try what I do.” The purple clad boy stated, folding his arms and leaning his chest against the boards. “I don’t even think you’re coordinated enough to do a two foot spin.” The stunned and anger-filled look that washed over Roman’s features gave him the exact answer he needed.

“Alright, that’s it mister Jack Smellington!” Roman rapidly stood up, grabbing his stick and towering over the smaller teen. “Meet me back here after hours and we’ll really see who the best is!”

“I’ll be back don’t you worry. As long as you don’t pull a Tonya Harding on me, I’ll be glad to show you how to really skate!” Virgil grabbed his now empty water bottle from the boards and skated away, shooting the star player a shit-eating grin. By the time he got off the ice and closed the heavy door behind him, the scratches of the rest of the team could be heard as they jumped the boards for practice. He quickly unlaced his skates, swiping the snow off of his blades and wiping off the excess water droplets with his old, black rag.

The skates were packed away as he walked out of those same metal double doors and climbed into his car. Before pulling away, Virgil checked his phone to see an unusual text: I’ll pick you up for our little match up later. You’re on my way to the rink, so be ready by 7 or I’m leaving without you. Shocked by the text, he closed his phone, rolling his windows down again and proceeding to play the rest of his Mayday Parade playlist on his drive home.

As Virgil was waiting for Roman to pull up, he pulled out his phone to play Vindicated by Dashboard Confessional while he scrolled through Tumblr. Right when he opened the app, the hockey player in his beat-up silver Chevy Cruze, blasting Brave New Girl by Britney Spears, rolled up into his driveway. Roman screamed before Virgil could even close his front door, “Get in loser, we’re going to the rink!”

          Virgil threw his backpack into the back seat and hesitantly hopped into the car. Although Roman played hockey, his car was fairly clean and his front seat had a very distinct smell compared to the back, where their skates were lazily thrown. The front of the car had a small hint of vanilla while the back seat had a scent of exactly what you can imagine, pure body odor from his balled-up practice jersey. The short drive to the rink felt like ages passed as the boy silently watched the scenery unfold outside of his window, laying his face in the palm of his hand. Upon stopping at a red light, he was startled out of his awkward, yet serene state he was in from a light nudge at his ribs. He looked over to find Roman kindly smiling at him, which was very unusual between the two.

          “Are you okay, Hot Topic? You’ve been pretty quiet the whole ride.” Virgil was stunned by the sudden change in Roman’s attitude. He was just insulting him early that same day. “I know we fight and all, but the least you can do is keep me a little company.” The smaller teen almost frowned, feeling a little bad for his actions. Maybe he genuinely wanted to change?

          He forced a small smile onto his normally brooding face, although the other could not see this with his attention on the road. “Yea I’m ok, don’t worry about it.”

          Upon arrival, they both grabbed their bags and walked into the rink, smiling at each other. Roman was wearing a white hoodie with a knight on it, his mascot, and black Adidas sweatpants with three white stripes straight down the sides. Virgil matched Roman, except he was wearing his traditional black and purple patchwork zip-up.  They stepped onto the ice and without a word Virgil set himself to work. He started at one end, gliding and connecting with the ice. With every bracket, twizzle, and step he took throughout his footwork, he let the ice take control. Each edge was deep, delicately ripping into the ice and sending him closer to the opposing side. Right before reaching the boards, he pushed into an outside mohawk, gaining speed as every crossover sounded through the rink. Roman was still standing at the door, astonished by the normally quiet and anxious boy. Lastly, Virgil was set, gliding on his back outside edge, and leaped into an axel, landing the one and a half revolution jump in a solid landing position. The teen flawlessly turned forward and slid into a sharp hockey stop, hitting Roman with a spray of cool snow. “So, can you top that Dr Do-The-Most?” Virgil looked up at him with a playful gleam in his eyes despite the antagonizing smirk that plagued his features. The taller teen was still in shock, but he eventually snapped out of it and smiled at the other.

“Now I see why you always made comments about out skating me. You truly are amazing Virgil!” The smirk never left the other’s face, the satisfaction from the statement only making it grow.

“You could always quit hockey. I know you may not want to and this is a bit of a stretch, but at least take this into consideration” Roman’s attention was gripped by the bold statement the smaller boy just made. “You’re pretty strong and you already know the basics of skating. You would make a great pair skater with some practice.” Virgil’s anxiety peaked and the other could tell. Now, he was not opposed to skating with Virgil, but hockey was his life. After a minute or two of silence, the taller teen lightly gripped the anxious boy’s shoulder, forcing his eyes off of the ice and into Roman’s. A steady gaze connected the two alone on the ice.

“Would you be my partner if I quit hockey?” Virgil was in complete shock, leading him to just rapidly nod his head and immediately wrap his arms around Roman, closing the gap between them. Their shared warmth made the cool air seem almost nonexistent.

He took back his statement from earlier about the taller boy. After years of fighting through high school, Virgil Sanders realized he definitely could call Roman Prince a friend.

It’s a shame that Dashing in December is so disappointing as a final product though. It’s certainly trope-y. It has the enemies to lovers corporate guy goes home to discover the spirt of Christmas and love and the country logline that has been the bread and butter of the Hallmark Channel for years now.

And yet it feels so lifeless?? It just feels like a series of arguments where Heath, the ranch hand, keeps getting mad at Wyatt, the prodigal son, about wanting to sell the ranch and in between they seem to get together because they are the only two gay people around. There’s scenes where the movie flirts with having them bond over their shared histories but they are quickly abandoned so we can circle back to the 900th fight about the concept of selling the ranch even though there’s a reveal early on that Prodigal Son Wyatt is singlehandedly keeping the place afloat (and paying everyone’s salaries!) with his own money.

The movie is entirely on Ranch Hand’s Heath side, but they also fail to really give him a character where you care about him beyond him constantly being right and also shirtless that one time. You learn a bit about his personal history (his family used to attend the ranch, he’s never really had a boyfriend) but that doesn’t mean you learn anything about his personality. What makes him feel joy (besides wanting to sell the ranch)? What makes him feel attracted to Wyatt (besides Being the Only Gay Around)? I don’t know.

This is progress though. Gay people deserve bland Hallmark romances just like straight people do. So, congrats to Dashing in December for providing that.

Campus Resource Know-How

Find out what resources your college provides. Do this early, preferably before you even get to campus. This may be a counselor type option typical of high school, or a therapist. Health Services may also have a Psychiatrist available. At some schools, these services will be free for students, while at others you will need to pay. Insurance may cover it. The important thing is that you know what is available, so that if and when you have an emergency, you know where to turn. 

Find out if there is a mental health awareness group on your campus. Having a group of peers with similar experiences and hardships to you can be unceasingly helpful while you are at school. Such groups can support each other, use their presence to make sure more resources at the school o towards mental health, and generally be a place to find understanding and compassion. 

Find out if your school offers any accommodations for mental health problems. DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU "AREN'T MESSED UP ENOUGH" TO USE THEM. Accommodations exist for a reason. College workloads can be intense, and can vary immensely from course to course. You never know what you are getting in to. For this reason, you should know if you can receive accommodations and how, so you have the support if you need it. In almost ever case, they require medical documentation. Additionally, you may need to have them set up in advance in order to take advantage of them that term. However, that shouldn't deter you from having the conversation with an academic advisor or therapist should the need arise. There is no shame in a diagnosis, and there is no shame in seeking accommodation should you have one. 

If traditional therapy is unavailable to you, consider online therapy services. I'll be upfront, many of these services can be quite costly, especially considering many insurance plans don't cover tele-medicine, or limit coverage. Note: Because I have only dealt with depression and anxiety and don't feel comfortable speaking on other mental illnesses, much of this section is specific to those disorders.  

Look for a meditation club on campus, or find time at least 3 days a week to meditate by yourself. I know, it sounds canned and hokey, but it can help. Meditation is by no means a magical cure all, but it can be useful in managing stress. If you haven't tried it before, give it a shot.

Don't let the dhall control your diet.  

Keep track of your health. Try to notice when you're symptoms are getting worse, and what seemed to kick off the decline. Pay attention to how you're eating, how much exercise you're getting, and how much sleep. Come up with a tracking system, if you can. I use a combination of an app (a bunch of recommendations below) and a short daily section in my bujo.  

SLEEP. MANAGEMENT.  I know that often mental illness is the worst enemy of a good sleep schedule, but even making the effort to go to bed is a positive step. Set a bed time, and do your absolute best to stick to it. 

Apps can make a huge difference in managing your mental health. Like I said above, keeping track of yourself and your mental state is vital. Find things that will help you. Here are some mental health specific recommendations (I have not used all of these. Links to both google play and apple(where available)):

Use affirmations! Come up with a couple short phrases you can easily remember to repeat to yourself when you are feeling overwhelmed or doubting yourself. Simple things like "I am enough" or "My mental illness does not control me". These can make a world of a difference in counteracting self-destructive thought patterns. 

Find a comfort place. Or multiple. If your room is an option, that's great! If you have roommates or will be living off-campus, try to pin down a few specific, private place around campus where you can be alone if you need to. Use places you feel safe and don't feel like you'll be discovered. Hidden library nooks, empty offices, particular groups of trees, even single stall bathrooms. It probably won't be perfect, but having a place to escape can make all the difference. 

General Rules 

Have a back up plan. Figure out ahead of time a plan for what you will do if your mental health starts to deteriorate while you're at school. Do as much as possible to make sure it will feel manageable to you while your motivation may be down or your anxiety is heightened. 

Don't compare yourself or your relative productivity to others. Having a mental illness creates unique and difficult challenges as you go through school, and many of your peers won't have to deal with them. Remember that your ability to stay on top of course work or take on extra activities outside classes is vastly different from other students. Appreciate your accomplishments as your own and recognize the challenges you have overcome in getting through school while coping with mental illness. 

Know your limits. Your health is paramount to your success.  

Communicate. Despite what your brain may be telling you, basically everyone wants you to succeed. The more you communicate with professors, friends, advisers, and family members, the more they can help you. Even if you can't talk to everyone, try to have a few people around you who you know you can rely on to help. You deserve it.

Chapter 197: The ENEMIES have been AMBUSHED

Chapter 197: The ENEMIES have been AMBUSHED

Since the day of the ambush, Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin changed their phone numbers without delay yet again as to avoid any other unexpected surprises. Elsewhere, Bai Han Qi had also taken the initiative to purchase a new SIM card, used only for the purpose of getting in contact with his son. Over the week, the two were particularly sagacious in handling everything they did. Taking into consideration that their safety is paramount, they rarely ventured out unless an unusual situation arose. After meticulously mapping out their plan, the two were finally prepared to meet up with Gu Yang.

The three settled to meet in a private room at an exceptionally hidden restaurant to chat and dine.  

“You should get a haircut.” Gu Yang said nonchalantly.   

Gu Hai lifted his head and ran his hand through his hair, unconsciously measuring the length with his fingers before speaking in an uninterested tone.

“Really, huh? I think it’s still short!

“I’m talking about Bai Luo Yin.”

Hearing his name, Bai Luo Yin finally picked his head up and absent-mindedly said, ‘oh’.

Gu Yang’s ambiguous attentiveness to such a minute detail spawned a blitz of jealousy within the room. Letting his eyes rest on the person beside him, Gu Hai placed his hand on the back of Bai Luo Yin’s head. With a rather stoic aura aligning the contours of his face, he gently caressed Bai Luo Yin’s hair, letting the softness play out against his skin. Tilting his head slightly to the side, allowing it to nearly touch the other boy’s head, Gu Hai deliberately said some words just for Gu Yang to hear.

“I think this hairstyle is pretty good. It’s not too long or too short. There’s no need trim so neatly.”

Bai Luo Yin shot Gu Hai a glance but opted to not say anything. 

“Where do you intend to go to after?” Gu Yang asked, seemingly unaffected. 

Keeping his hand on the same spot, Gu Hai racked through his thoughts for a moment. “Probably Yúnnán[1], if not, we’ll head to Tibet. In short, the further from the city, the more isolated the place, the better.”

“When are you leaving?”

“After the New Year.” Gu Hai said matter-of-factly, “Winter in those places is hard to endure so we won’t be leaving anytime before the New Year. It’s best to stay in this place for the time being since it’s pretty nice. Unlike the severe and dry coldness of Beijing, it’s a lot more comfortable spending the winter here.”

Seemingly apathetic, Gu Yang cast Bai Luo Yin a glance. His voice was calm and collected as he spoke, “Are you guys planning on celebrating the New Year here?”

Scooting closer, Gu Hai snuggled his arm around Bai Luo Yin’s shoulder and cheerfully said, “Isn’t New Year the same no matter where you celebrate it? What’s important is who you spend it with. We missed the chance last year so it’s a given that we must make up for it this year.”

“Why did you miss the chance to last year?” Gu Yang asked intentionally as one of his brows slightly rose. 

Bai Luo Yin and Gu Hai exchanged glances, both recalling the pain and suffering that took root in the previous year. With neither saying a word, the room deafened with silence.

Naturally, Gu Yang did not question any further.

After chatting for a while longer, Gu Hai suddenly said, “I’m going to the bathroom.”

Once the door closed after Gu Hai left, Bai Luo Yin and Gu Yang found themselves alone together. Bai Luo Yin placed his chopsticks down and looked straight at Gu Yang without saying anything.

Slightly turning his head to the side to catch the other person’s eyes, a tenuous unintentional smile that was somewhat laced with an unusually cold arrogance emerged from Gu Yang’s stern countenance.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Bai Luo Yin lightly parted his tinted lip and slightly narrowed his eyes questioningly, “My examination for direct entry into the university was somehow approved without trouble, were you the one that worked it out with the school?”  

The corners of Gu Yang’s mouth pulled back and as he spoke his tone was nearly ice cold to the ears. “You’re such a narcissist.”

Bai Luo Yin countered with an even colder gaze, one that demanded the viewer to back down. “I do hope that is the case.”

“The hairstyle you have now really doesn’t suit you.” Gu Yang emphasized this observation once again.

“Whether suitable or not differs from person to person.”

Gu Yang scoffed, then without warning, his hand reached over towards the person in front of him. He turned it over and slid the back of his hand along the side of Bai Luo Yin’s face for a moment.

“Your facial features aren’t anything special, but the shape is perfect. If your standard of beauty always emulates that of Gu Hai, then this visage of yours can only remain at the level of every other average looking man on the street. I think that’s such a pity, wasteful if anything.”

Heeding none of those words, Bai Luo Yin immediately gripped Gu Yang’s hand and flung it away disinterestedly.

“Your standard of beauty is quite high. However, I really don’t know how to appreciate it.”

Gu Yang’s brows rose as he took a sip of the beer. Within seconds, a semblance of a smile, yet at the same time not a smile, appeared as he looked at Bai Luo Yin with interest. “It’s seems I’m really starting to like you a bit.” 

“Then you can slowly develop a relationship by yourself.”

As the two continued chatting, the door of the private room suddenly burst open with a thunderous bang. In seconds, five to six bulky men, armed with weapons, barged into the room and surrounded Bai Luo Yin and Gu Yang.

“Don’t move!!”

The atmosphere instantly stiffened. Bai Luo Yin and Gu Yang exchanged a quick glance then simultaneously stared at the men before them.  

“Where did you all come from?” Gu Yang asked coldly.

One of them opened his mouth, “Master Gu, you’ve taken General Gu’s trust for granted. In spite of knowing everything, you failed to escalate and report!” 

“He trusted me?” Gu Yang laughed grimly, “Then what brings your squad here?”

Although the men looked at each other in consternation, they nonetheless gripped the rifles in their hands tightly.

“Master Gu, we don’t want to waste your time. If you’re wise, you should quickly surrender the person without delay. That way we can properly head back and report on this.”

Gu Yang narrowed his eyes and stared at each one of them with a judgmental gaze before faintly asking, “Who do you all want me to surrender?”

“Stop pretending!” A man with an explosive temper shouted angrily, “We saw him walk in here.”

“Really?” Gu Yang casually spread his arms out, “Then do tell me, where is he?”

Unaffected, the leader issued a command: “Go search immediately! If he’s not found, seize these two and take them back with us!”

At the tumultuous order, four to five men hastened their feet and dispersed throughout the private room. They searched every nook and cranny of the interior that could possibly conceal a person. One of the foolish men even took to ruthlessly kicking the floor just to see if there was a hidden path beneath or not.

Noting this act, Bai Luo Yin couldn’t help but to sneer mentally.

You think the passageway is the pit latrine,[2] huh?

After thoroughly searching throughout the place, only the washroom remained. Someone took to wringing the doorknob, but in seconds, he discovered that it refused to budge.

“Someone’s inside!!”

Hearing his stentorian voice reverberating from that side of the room, the remaining four men quickened their pace and uniformly ran over. Two of them kicked at the door, while the remaining three stood behind to cover. In less than a second, the door opened and just as those two men were about to charge in, they were suddenly rammed backwards by someone. Caught off guard, the duo crashed onto the three men that were maintaining their position behind them. As the five men stood their ground, they looked ahead, their eyes slightly widened in astonishment.

Inside the tight narrow space stood more than ten odd men, all bore a sinister expression as they stared at them.

Shit! We’ve been ambushed!

The stunned men wanted to retreat, but unfortunately it was too late. There were safety in numbers for the men they were facing now. Even more so, each and every one of them were all skilled individuals who knew their stuff; evident in the split second that it took them to subjugate the intruders. Not only were their rifles confiscated, their hands were also tied tightly behind their backs.

Unable to move, they all stared with discontent at Gu Yang and Bai Luo Yin.

“Master Gu, nothing good will come out of you openly provoking the General like this. The weak cannot contend with the strong. It can’t be that you don’t understand this saying?”

“Whether or not I understand it is none of your concern.” Gu Yang turned to those ten or more men and gave them a signal with a slight twitch at the corner of his eye. Then he instructed them, “Lock them all in the washroom and confiscate all their communication devices. I will find someone to assist you all with getting in contact with the General. You all should take a rest as well.”

Unsatisfied, the leader shouted with vigor, “Master Gu, as a person who behaves with integrity, you need to leave yourself an escape route!” 

Gu Yang sneered bitterly, “I don’t know whether or not I have an escape route, but I know for sure you definitely don’t!”

“You’ve also underestimated us!” In just seconds, the leader’s disposition brandished the colour of someone ranked as an elite. “Today, Laozi[3] will let you experience what outflanking actually means!!”

Just as those vociferous words flew out, another group of men, comprised of roughly 20 or so, clamorously broke through the door. Fortunately, the private room Gu Yang booked was big enough or else this place would not fit so many people. Looking at these men now, each and every one of them were tall and bulky. To worsen the situation, they were all well-equipped with superior quality weapons.

This time around, it was not hard to imagine how tremendous Gu Wei Ting’s determination was in this endeavor. Just for the sake of one person, he even resorted to utilizing such significant amount of police force.   

Just as these people charged in, the five men who were previously subjugated were instantly replenished with confidence.

“Master Gu, you can decide what to do now!” The leader spoke out again.

Gu Yang looked at the disposition of the force displayed before him as a thread of anxiety colored his face. “I really want to surrender him to you guys, but the point is, he’s not here!”

Hearing the sternness in Gu Yang’s words, the opposing men’s faces changed to several indiscernible expressions. From the looks of it, whether the opposing side confronted them or not, Gu Hai never once appeared during the entire ordeal.

“It’s fine that he’s not here. The two of you being here is more than enough. Tie them up first!” Shouted a loud and hoarse voice.

Four to five men simultaneously made their way towards Gu Yang and Bai Luo Yin’s sides. Surprisingly, even at a time like this, Gu Yang still had the impulse to banter around with Bai Luo Yin.

“Tell me, if 20 or more people were all locked up in the washroom, would they all fit?”

“That would be terrible,” said Bai Luo Yin as a mischievous smile played out across his face.

Just as the person was about to tie them up, his hands suddenly trembled.

Quick to notice the sudden change in his subordinate, the leader let out another roar, “What are you being stupefied about!? Move quickly! I’ll take the blame if they get hurt!”

Bang! A bullet flew past the leader’s ear and ferociously punctured the wall behind him.

This was a genuine bullet.

The leader’s facial expression changed in the wink of an eye!

In that exact moment, Gu Hai broke through the door, dragging a sniper in with him. 

“Perfect! All the ‘terrorists’ have been captured!”

Once those words filtered into the room, ten rifles suddenly emerged from outside of the windows. Their muzzles swayed left and right, causing the reflection of light from the scopes to shine throughout the private room, making everyone shiver in fear. Since the sniper’s leg was hit by a bullet, all he could do with great difficulty was to lean against the wall.

The leader could no longer restrain his anger as he roared, “Risk it all and fight!!”

Gu Hai aimed the gun at the leader’s head, “There are twenty odd men here, none of you are using real bullets that would actually hurt anyone. However, I’d like to apologize in advance ‘bros’. I’m not that merciful or kind-hearted. The bullets I’m using are all real.”

Just as he finished saying that, another round was shot and the leader’s immediate reaction was to roll on the ground. Although no one was gunned down, the twenty odd soldiers’ hearts sank coldly. Killing any of them would be like stepping on an ant. However, if any of the three boys were to meet with a slight mishap, they would have to drag their families to the grave. One side can freely open fire without any qualms, while the other side had bullets but did not have the nerve to shoot them. How was it possible to fight?

Gu Hai stood in the center of the private room with a domineering air while carrying a mighty distinction, “All of you look carefully. Altogether, there are fifteen rifles aimed in here. I’ll give you all fifteen seconds. As long as you flee to the washroom within those fifteen seconds, you will be safe. Those that haven’t gone in, can taste a hail of bullets!”

Just as those words dropped to the floor, several of the washroom assistants conscientiously came out to vacate the room for the group of men.

If they were normal civilians, they would have bolted to the bathroom already and the space would probably be swamped. However, these twenty odd men were experienced combatants. They did not struggle or rush as they walked into the bathroom with gloomy expressions. As the room gradually lessened in the number of people, only the leader and his sniper did not budge, instead they took to glancing at the remaining few seconds. Bai Luo Yin suddenly hijacked the sniper’s rifle from his hand and shot him a few times. 

He won’t die from these “bullets” anyways, might as well use this opportunity to take revenge for Gu Hai!

Once the pain consumed him, the sniper immediately fell to the ground and began to roll around in agony.

Who knew when the leader had begun to properly understand the situation that he was placed in? He suddenly stood up with bloodshot eyes and walked unwillingly into the washroom. Afterwards, the assistants pilfered all these men’s communication devices.

Gu Yang’s cold eyes swept past the stolen hardware before he finally spoke again, “Don’t worry, someone will contact the General in your place.”

The corner of Gu Hai’s lips curved into a smirk, “Don’t even think about going back home for New Years. It’s a much better atmosphere if we all celebrate it together!”

Bai Luo Yin faced those dozen or more men who were on his side and faintly said, “These people are in your hands now. Give them three meals a day and ask for some blankets for them in the evening. Don’t forget to treat them with great hospitality!”

“Don’t worry, none can escape.”

In the end, the three mischievous boys cheerfully took their leave.

AutoChess is the mobile game we deserve, but not the game we need

One of the great things about going away on holiday is that it gives me time to catch up on some mobile gaming. The curse of writing about videogames means that, despite getting to try out a wide variety of titles, you rarely get the chance to enjoy anything for any great length of time. Time away from the daily grind lets me actually play what I want, as opposed to what I have to.

My recent go-to game has been Star Traders: Frontiers, which is an excellent sandbox RPG set in space that’s really easy to drop-in/drop-out of. I figured that I’d spend most of my time playing that… until I heard that AutoChess was in beta on android.

I’ve been aware of the DOTA 2 mod craze since everyone started talking about it at the start of the year. We’ve covered it a fair bit on Strategy Gamer, with Ian writing up an excellent tips guide that we’ve been maintaining. Before last week, I’d never really given it a go myself- I found the concept interesting, but I don’t play DOTA 2 and I was being a bit lazy in not jumping through the hoops to explore it myself.

Just as I was settling into my holiday, Ian tells me the rumoured mobile version was actually available via beta on Android.

If you’re still not really sure what AutoChess is, let me try to break it down:

The game has nothing to do with chess, other than the fact that you play on a chess board and different classes of pieces have movement algorithms that imitate the different movement patterns of real chess piece.

Calling them ‘pieces’ probably doesn’t help, but there you are.

The meat of the game is purchasing units, and then deploying them on the board during the ‘Preparation’ phase. There’s then a battle phase where you’re pitted against a random opponent, and the pieces you’ve both put on the board then automatically fight each other according to the pre-set tactics that piece is designed to use. This will include things like movement pattern & speed, target priority, ability triggering and so on.

Units will fight until only one side remains. Loser loses HP (I forget the formula) and will be eliminated when their HP reaches 0 (you start at 100).

Units/pieces have a race and a class and come in different rarities. Three pieces of the same unit can be combined into a 2-Star, more powerful version of that piece. Three 2-stars combined to become a 3-Star.

You are offered five randomly generated units per round to choose form, which cost money. Money is earned through winning and playing rounds. Losing too, I think? You can also spend money to refresh your options.

Fielding multiple units of the same class and/or race will confer bonuses, some for the whole team, some just on other members of that class/race. These need to be different units though – duplicate pieces on the board don’t count.

The number of units you can field is controlled by your level. You get 1 XP per round fought, and you can spend money to increase your XP by 4. You can stored up to 9 pieces In your off-board area.

There is also loot.

Simple, right? Once you get your head around it things are actually quite simple – the fact that you don’t need to also fight with your pieces is what makes this game oddly alluring and in theory an excellent mobile experience. I imagine this is what people who enjoy Football Manager et al experience when they’re playing those types of games.

I've had a lot of fun slowly learning the various strategies in play, both in terms of team composition but also in terms of economy. Money’s only really scarce in the early rounds, but even when you possess a reserve you will need to be making short-and-long terms decisions with what to do to it. Do you buy that more expensive piece, or hope you can collect more cheaper ones to level up your pieces? Do you pour money into levelling up, or into refreshing the list to cycle through more options?

While some of the nuances can be a little tricky (took me a while to realise there even was a 3-Star tier), the basics of the game are explained quite well in a tutorial where you play against some bots. The English translations are a little mangled in places, but the basic information comes across fine. I’ve started playing ranked and while I initially did quite well, I’m starting to make it into the top 4 less and less at the moment, so perhaps I need to spend more time in casual.

At the moment, I’m really trying to pay attention as to what bonuses are worth going for, and how each unit behaves. Assassins by and large will jump towards the back of the enemy’s formation, but you can have both melee and ranged assassins (as you can have melee and ranged of several different unit type) so taking this into account is key. I’m also trying to learn when to scale up my units in terms of power; learning when to let go and move on to better pieces seems important.

Despite my current infatuation with AutoChess, as a mobile game it’s currently lacking in several key, potentially deal-breaking areas, all connected via a similar theme:

Matches are played out in real-time, and they are long – upwards of 25-30 mins. Even if you’re the first one eliminated, you’re looking at a good 15 minutes.

There’s no pausing and, and even if you minimise the app to do something else, the action continues without you (plus if you miss an action phase you won't be able to see what happened for the purpose of tweaking your strategy).

While mid and even late-game comebacks are possible, a lot of the time I released quite early that my strategy was poor. I also quite often wasn’t really sure what to do about, which meant even with a strong start I had to watch myself slowly but surely lose ground for 15 minutes until knocked out. It’s like watching a train-wreck in slow motion.

Experimenting is hard because you’ve got to play out a whole match and the RNG means that being ‘scientific’ about it is quite challenging.

While there’s no denying the strength of the core theme, I would very much like to see the developers experiment with different versions of the game that are more mobile friendly. Enabling people to drop-in, drop-out out matches I think is paramount, although failing that It’d be interesting to see how robust the game would be with everyone on, say, 50HP instead of 100.

Really though, considering you only need to spend 30 or so seconds (the Preparation phase has a time-limit) making the real decisions, I’m pretty sure an asynchronous mode would work. One could log-in, watched a replay for the last round, and then play out their next Preparation phase the moment they’re ready. Like other asynchronous multiplayer games, there would need to be a limit on how long to wait between submitting the next round.

If you’ve yet to try out AutoChess I’d highly recommend jumping on board and checking it out, even if you only play a couple of matches. It’s easier to do on Android, just search for ‘AutoChess’ by Dragonest Game. iOS players have a few more hoops to jump through. I’ll be keeping a closer eye on this going forward, and we’ve heard rumours of other similar games already on the market, so we’ll probably check those out as well.

How the 52 Places Traveler Stays Charged While Chronicling the World

How do New York Times journalists use technology in their jobs and in their personal lives? Jada Yuan, who is crisscrossing the globe as The Times’s 52 Places Traveler, discussed the tech she’s using.

You are endlessly traveling, and you must have to pack light. What are the most crucial tech tools that you pack?

Funny thing is, I’d be traveling much lighter if I weren’t dragging around so much tech!

Because I’m carting all my own stuff and moving every four or five days, I have to think a lot about size and weight. My MacBook Pro and iPhone X are essentials, as are a Bluetooth keyboard (which I hook up to my phone to write articles when I don’t have my computer), a 2TB hard drive, and a USB-C dongle with multiple USB ports and an SD card reader.

I adore my Sony RX100 V point-and-shoot camera, which Todd Heisler, one of The Times’s Pulitzer Prize-winning staff photographers, chose for me. It’s tiny, drop proof (so far!) and especially good in low-light conditions. For video, I don’t go anywhere without a Rode Lavalier (an external microphone for noisy environments) and my DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal, a stabilizer that helps me take really smooth shots on my phone while walking (or riding a horse).

Staying charged is paramount. I can’t risk hiking five hours up a volcano to have my camera die, which happened in Patagonia. I have two or three portable battery chargers on me at all times, plus the appropriate micro-USB and iPhone cables, wall plugs, a portable charger for my camera’s terrible batteries and an Allocacoc Power Cube, which lets me plug in four American-plug devices and two USB cords, plus has interchangeable adapters for any wall outlet I might encounter.

You shoot lots of photo and videos to document your travels. What do you do to stay organized or do quick edits on the road?

I’m new to iPhones — I had a Samsung phone I loved before this trip — and the magic of Airdrop has been a revelation to me. It lets me send photos to my computer and ruthlessly delete them from my phone.

All camera photos are uploaded to my computer and are turned into contact sheets named by place in Photo Mechanic. I can batch caption them, do an edit of my best shots and, most important, see everything I have without needing an internet connection.

For shooting, I toggle between the iPhone camera app and Pro Camera, a paid app with a ton of clutch features, like sound levels when you’re shooting video. The best editing app I’ve found for both photo and video is InShot, which lets you adjust videos to be square or 9:16 (the ratio for Instagram stories).

What apps have been most useful to you for planning trips or finding things to do?

I like to book directly through hotels and airlines, and TripIt has saved me from endlessly searching through my email to find confirmations. You forward emails to the app, and it organizes the information into legs of travel. The app even helps you check into your flights.

As for planning, I work with a researcher at The Times, and we communicate over Google Docs. But I’ve found there isn’t a single tech substitute out there for reading articles or random blogs, or doing a web search on “where to eat in X,” or asking locals where they like to go.

Before I get to a city, I like to take all the recommendations I have and enter them into Google Maps. That way I can strategize my must-sees, but also know where to eat once I finish with that museum.

It’s a tossup between Maps and Evernote for which app I use most. Paper clutter is my constant enemy. To avoid taking brochures, I photograph each one I might want to refer to later and put it into Evernote.

And a VPN, or a virtual private internet network, is a huge help in countries where I don’t know the language. It makes my phone believe I’m still in the States so my web searches come up in English.

Which country has struck you as the most fascinating in terms of how it uses tech? What stood out about it?

So far, I’ve been through only the Americas and a little bit of Europe. What’s been most fascinating is how few people I’ve met seem to care about social media. In New Orleans, my first stop, almost no one I met had an Instagram, and those who did could rarely remember their handles. And that has been repeated in most places I’ve been.

I was impressed by some 20-somethings from Mexico City who had planned their entire Baja Peninsula vacation through YouTube video searches. And I loved that in Oslo all the buses had USB chargers built into the wall. Not all of them worked, but it was the thoughtfulness that counted.

Are there any common tech problems that people seem to experience everywhere?

But the real issue is returns. I’d get a shipment and find out it had to be sent back through three different carriers, and I’d have to hunt down extra boxes and pay for return shipping — plus find a shipping place that handled multiple carriers and was open when I could get to it. Instead, I’m having a lot of fun shopping locally.

Podcasts, too, were a big part of my New York City life. But on the road, I’m less willing to take the safety risk of putting in earbuds on public transit. And I don’t want to. Being on this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I want to be tuned in as much as I can.

Funny thing is, I’d be traveling much lighter if I weren’t dragging around so much tech!

Because I’m carting all my own stuff and moving every four or five days, I have to think a lot about size and weight. My MacBook Pro and iPhone X are essentials, as are a Bluetooth keyboard (which I hook up to my phone to write articles when I don’t have my computer), a 2TB hard drive, and a USB-C dongle with multiple USB ports and an SD card reader.

I adore my Sony RX100 V point-and-shoot camera, which Todd Heisler, one of The Times’s Pulitzer Prize-winning staff photographers, chose for me. It’s tiny, drop proof (so far!) and especially good in low-light conditions. For video, I don’t go anywhere without a Rode Lavalier (an external microphone for noisy environments) and my DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal, a stabilizer that helps me take really smooth shots on my phone while walking (or riding a horse).

Staying charged is paramount. I can’t risk hiking five hours up a volcano to have my camera die, which happened in Patagonia. I have two or three portable battery chargers on me at all times, plus the appropriate micro-USB and iPhone cables, wall plugs, a portable charger for my camera’s terrible batteries and an Allocacoc Power Cube, which lets me plug in four American-plug devices and two USB cords, plus has interchangeable adapters for any wall outlet I might encounter.

You shoot lots of photo and videos to document your travels. What do you do to stay organized or do quick edits on the road?

I’m new to iPhones — I had a Samsung phone I loved before this trip — and the magic of Airdrop has been a revelation to me. It lets me send photos to my computer and ruthlessly delete them from my phone.

All camera photos are uploaded to my computer and are turned into contact sheets named by place in Photo Mechanic. I can batch caption them, do an edit of my best shots and, most important, see everything I have without needing an internet connection.

For shooting, I toggle between the iPhone camera app and Pro Camera, a paid app with a ton of clutch features, like sound levels when you’re shooting video. The best editing app I’ve found for both photo and video is InShot, which lets you adjust videos to be square or 9:16 (the ratio for Instagram stories).

What apps have been most useful to you for planning trips or finding things to do?

I like to book directly through hotels and airlines, and TripIt has saved me from endlessly searching through my email to find confirmations. You forward emails to the app, and it organizes the information into legs of travel. The app even helps you check into your flights.

As for planning, I work with a researcher at The Times, and we communicate over Google Docs. But I’ve found there isn’t a single tech substitute out there for reading articles or random blogs, or doing a web search on “where to eat in X,” or asking locals where they like to go.

Before I get to a city, I like to take all the recommendations I have and enter them into Google Maps. That way I can strategize my must-sees, but also know where to eat once I finish with that museum.

It’s a tossup between Maps and Evernote for which app I use most. Paper clutter is my constant enemy. To avoid taking brochures, I photograph each one I might want to refer to later and put it into Evernote.

And a VPN, or a virtual private internet network, is a huge help in countries where I don’t know the language. It makes my phone believe I’m still in the States so my web searches come up in English.

Which country has struck you as the most fascinating in terms of how it uses tech? What stood out about it?

So far, I’ve been through only the Americas and a little bit of Europe. What’s been most fascinating is how few people I’ve met seem to care about social media. In New Orleans, my first stop, almost no one I met had an Instagram, and those who did could rarely remember their handles. And that has been repeated in most places I’ve been.

I was impressed by some 20-somethings from Mexico City who had planned their entire Baja Peninsula vacation through YouTube video searches. And I loved that in Oslo all the buses had USB chargers built into the wall. Not all of them worked, but it was the thoughtfulness that counted.

But the ability to outlast them by keeping his army’s food fresher for longer.

In just over a decade a confectioner named Nicolas Appert had found the answer.

Through his method of heating, boiling and sealing food in airtight glass jars.

The same basic elements which keep canned goods fresh today.

It just goes to show that when political leaders create the right conditions for individuals and businesses to innovate the results can be astounding.

And I truly believe that when government and business work together in the right way we can do things we could never do on our own.

So today – I want to talk about how, through our Industrial Strategy, we are working with all of you in this room to help this amazing sector do even more.

Impact of sector

I’ve always appreciated the importance of this sector.

I was born and raised in the food and drink business with my father and grandfather’s dairy delivery round supplying our neighbours in Middlesbrough with fresh Yorkshire milk 7 days a week.

I know this same dedication exists all across the country.

Food and drink is the most geographically dispersed industry there is.

The FDF’s Ian Wright has a great fact, that there’s a food or drink manufacturing plant, with more than 50 employees, in every single UK constituency apart from Westminster.

From Scottish salmon farmers on the Isles of Mull and Harris in Scotland…

To workers in McVities’ Stockport factory, which makes 2 billion Jaffa Cakes a year…

The food supply chain employs nearly 4 million people.

The food and drink industry is the biggest manufacturing sector in the country, larger than automotive and aerospace combined.

And in the last 10 years UK food and drink exports have skyrocketed growing by well over 50%.

Every year, I hear these statistics at conferences like these.

But, ultimately, these statistics, and the impact they demonstrate, need to translate into respect and engagement.

Simply put – you deserve the same level of engagement, with all parts of government, that other successful industries, like automotive, aerospace, life sciences and financial services, have come to expect.

One way we’re putting this right is through the Food and Drink Sector Council.

I really think this is the beginning of something important.

Bringing together government departments, farmers and growers, food and drink manufacturers, the logistics industry, the hospitality industry, and others with a stake in this flourishing sector.

Everyone sitting around one single table agreeing one single set of goals and working together to achieve them.

The FDF has played an absolutely pivotal role in bringing this council to life.

And we’ll need your support to build its credibility.

So I’d encourage all of you here today to engage with its working groups. Make your voice heard and help transform the sector.

The next steps

One of the Council’s early tasks is to propose a Sector Deal to drive forward each aspect of our Industrial Strategy as it reflects food and drink.

I take this personally.

Michael Gove and I will jointly lead for the government on negotiating this.

And I’d like to thank Ian Wright and Tim Rycroft for the crucial co-ordinating role the FDF has played.

I want this to be a totemic deal that establishes the food and drink sector as an essential part of this country’s economic future.

Building on some big opportunities, which I know this sector is already seizing.

New technologies like AI and robotics are at the very heart of our Industrial Strategy.

And they’re already transforming this sector.

For example, a potato processing company is already using AI to work out which spuds would work best for chips and which for crisps.

Cutting waste and saving money.

While in Milton Keynes, The Co-op is using robots to deliver up to 10kg of shopping to homes within a 2-mile radius.

With the company’s 10 robots despatching around 1,000 orders since the app went live a month ago.

And – through our Industrial Strategy - we’re already supporting this sector in adopting new technologies.

Back in February, I announced £90 million of Industrial Strategy money, bringing together AI, robotics and earth observation to improve supply chain resilience in the agri-food sector.

This includes support for ‘innovation accelerators’ charged with exploring the commercial potential of new tech ideas at pace.

And alongside new technologies the deal should also have a strong focus on new markets.

With just 1 in 5 food and drink companies exporting there’s a big opportunity here.

Of course, many British brands are already renowned.

Ask people from around the world what food and drink they most associate with the UK and I think Scotland would come out on top.

Scotch whisky. Or Scottish salmon, for example.

And the way that Scotland has blended food and drink with tourism and hospitality is a great British success story in its own right.

Yet – increasingly, the world is taking interest in British brands from south of Greta Green.

Last year, London Popcorn firm ‘Propercorn’ was the fifth fastest-growing independent business anywhere in Europe.

Within 6 months of launching in Germany they were stocked in 1,000 locations.

And are now the number 1 premium popcorn brand anywhere in the country.

While in the South West, Wyke Farms are encouraging dairy farmers within 50 miles of their Bruton dairy to partner with them to satisfy the growing demand from a Cheddar-hungry global middle-class.

We need to look at how we can help other firms tickle customers’ taste buds the world over.

Staying competitive

But let’s not forget that 7 of your top 10 export destinations are in Europe.

And Brexit is one area, where it’s so important that we not only listen to your concerns, but act on them.

After all – you are the ones who, day in - day out – actually live the million complexities which make up the reality of food and drink trade.

I know that this morning you heard from Michael Creed from the Irish government.

And last month, I travelled to Belfast to hear from companies, including food and drink firms whose supply chains span the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

One of those companies was Diageo who make Bailey’s Irish Cream.

Bailey’s manufacturing process works on an all-Ireland basis.

With ingredients and packaging materials crossing the border multiple times.

Milk travels from Northern Ireland to Ireland for processing into cream, some of which is sent back to Northern Ireland.

Whiskey goes from south to north, and back again, while bottles go from north to south.

With such highly integrated supply chains it’s no surprise that companies like Diageo are concerned about the delays and costs that could be created by new customs processes.

And as we negotiate our new relationship with the EU, securing continued frictionless trade between Northern Ireland and Ireland, while avoiding hard border infrastructure, will be paramount.

I know that many of you are also concerned about the potential challenges of ‘Rules of Origin’ rules which determine a product’s economic nationality.

This issue was raised in a recent, insightful report commissioned by the FDF and the National Association of British and Irish Flour Millers which I read with great interest.

One case study in the report features a loaf of wholemeal bread sold under a household brand in the UK and exported to Ireland, an EU member state.

The wholemeal and white flour it contains is milled in the UK from a blend of grains from growers in Canada, the US and the UK reflecting both global price and harvest quality.

Yet in one post-Brexit scenario, the use of UK-milled flour, including any quantity of wheat grown outside the UK, would automatically disqualify the loaf of bread from preferential import tariff treatment into the EU single market.

We need to take concerns like this into account, avoiding any unnecessary barriers to trade, including from ‘Rules of Origin’.
