You asked to walk me home But I had to carry you And you pushed me in And now my feet can't touch the bottom of you

"Heading home for the night?" Steven's nervous voice filtered into your ears from behind as you were packing your bag at the end of the work day. He had been your co-worker at the museum for the last few months, but you had never gathered the courage to talk to him.

You supposed he decided to take the leap first.

"Yeah, it's about that time." You replied with a shy smile, bag draped over your shoulder as you watched him fiddle with his hands.

"Do you think I could walk you home? I noticed you going in the direction I usually go a few nights ago." He blanched, seeming to dislike his words. "Not that I was watching you or anything, I just happened to notice-"

"That sounds nice, Steven." You interrupted his ramblings, smile widening.

Adorable Steven Grant wants to walk me home! You thought excitedly to yourself.

The walk was quiet at first, but not the awkward kind. Just kind of happily content in the others company. Eventually, he asked you a tentative question about your favorite tv program - and you were off. The rest of the walk spent with shared laughs and a mutual feeling of disappointment when you reached the door of your flat.

Almost like an unspoken agreement, he walked you home the rest of the week. Even stopping at the bakery down the road one of the days to get cupcakes, both of you loving devils food.

Tonight seemed different. When Steven came to you, the bags under his eyes were more prominent. An anxious twitching to his hands that you hadn't seen before.

You attempted not to say anything, but about halfway through your walk (after his third jump at some noise down the street), you chose to break your silence.

"What's wrong, Steven? You don't seen very... alright."

He looked at you for a moment, brown eyes drowning with some emotion that you couldn't quite place.

"I have a sleeping disorder." He said after a moment. "I sleep walk, and lose track of... a lot of time. It's been much harder the past few days. I've been trying to stay up to fight it - but it's been difficult."

Your brows furrowed in concern, stopping outside the door of your home as usual, a proposal sitting on the tip of your tongue. "Could I stay the night?"

His eyes widened at what he thought you were implying and you continued quickly. "I could sleep on the couch. I usually stay up pretty late, so I could keep an eye on you and you can get some rest. We don't work tomorrow and I don't mind, really."

Steven looked like he was contemplating your offer for a moment before he replied. "Are you sure?"

You nodded in assent, gesturing toward your door. "Let me just grab a bag."

You stayed at Steven's that night, watching reality television until he was comfortable enough to go to sleep. The chaste kiss that he dared to give you before he went to lay down, all sorry's and nervousness was enough to make your heart flutter. You told him not to apologize, and returned the gesture. He went to bed with a smile on his face.

You stayed up for a few hours after that, watching him for any signs of discomfort. You thought you saw his lids flutter once, but he had just rolled over on his side.

You went to bed late that night, never knowing that Marc had noticed you there and decided to give Steven the night off.

The day you came into work to find out that not only were the bathrooms literally destroyed; Steven had done it, and been fired for it. You demanded to be shown the security footage, claiming that the boss that wanted you to check in on it and clenched your jaw at the sight.

You and Steven's relationship may be a budding thing; but the eyes that stared into the camera were most certainly not his.

You left work immediately feigning sickness and went to his apartment, knocking briskly on the door.

He opened it immediately, eyes looking like they had been shined over with tears just moments before. "Y/N?"

"May I come in?" You asked firmly, worry pushing its way into your stomach.

"Of course." Steven moved aside to let you in and you saw the state of disarray that his apartment was in and the floorboard that he had pulled up.

You stood in the middle of his sitting room, hands going to your hips. "What's going on, Steven? I watched the security tapes. That... that wasn't you, was it?"

He stared, floundering. You could see the gears turning in his head before he managed a reply. He took a few steps forward, closing the space between you and crushing you against his chest. You were a bit surprised but quickly returned the embrace, hands wrapping around his shoulders.

"You could tell that wasn't me?" His voice was choked.

"Of course I could, Steven. Those eyes were different."

He pulled you to the couch and spilled everything to you. Waking up out of country, hearing a voice in his head, his thought that there was this other person controlling him sometimes.

You listened patiently, his hand clasped in yours. When he finished by telling you that he was going to a storage unit he'd found the key to - to hopefully find some answers - your offer to join him was immediate.

"It could be dangerous, Y/N. The stuff that I - that he - seems to be mixed up in, it isn't good."

"All the more reason to have backup."

You are sick, and you're married And you might be dying But you're holding me like water in your hands When you saw the dead little bird, you started crying But you know the killer doesn't understand

When you got back to his apartment that night, all fear and anxiety over what had happened, you didn't expect even more surprises. Steven had literally ran from that storage facility after a lengthy conversation with himself and some very odd things happening with the lights.

You both rushed into his apartment, your mind turning over everything. You certainly believed him now.

But you found a woman in his home.

"Who are you?" Steven asked, an arm extended to keep you behind him while your curious gaze traveled over the woman.

She scoffed, staring you both down. "Is that a joke? I'm your wife."

You took your leave shortly after that, despite Steven's stammered demands that you stay and talk this through with him. You simply gave Layla an awkward smile and left.

Your mind churned after you got home, and for hours after that while you ignored his calls. He was married. Married, and he never told you. Fighting with some sort of inner and outer demons, and married.

The knock on your door later that night shouldn't have surprised you.

"Y/N." Steven breathed your name when you opened the door, relief in his eyes. "Please let me explain."

You swallowed heavily, leaning against the door frame and opting not to invite him in. "Explain then, Steven."

"I'm not married to Layla. It's not me, Y/N. It's Marc. Marc Spector. The little American man inside me."

You raised an eyebrow and he seemed to realize how ridiculous he sounded.

"I'm not sure exactly what's happening yet, or why. All I know is that I'm not the only person in this body but I can speak for myself." He took a step inside your door then, his chest brushing against yours while he angled his head down to meet your eyes.

"You don't deserve any of this craziness, especially when I'm not even sure if I can protect you, but please believe me when I say that you're the only woman I want. The only interested in. You're perfect for me, and so much better than I deserve. I can't ask you to give me a chance, knowing everything that is happening but-"

Your lips on his cut off his rambling, your hands going to cup either side of his face while he melted into your embrace, arms wrapping around your waist.

It was at that moment you realized you didn't care, about any of it. You were in this with him, wherever it led. Even if it meant slaying his demons yourself.

hi baby!!! well, all the songs on the MLT playlist for sure! but if i had to list additional songs, these are the ones that come to mind immediately (mostly bc i listened to them a lot while writing haha). 

繁华梦 by Isabelle Huang

this is one of my favorite songs PERIOD. i love songs from historical drama osts in general. i've never actually watched the show, but i am a big fan of this singer! the lyrics are so gorgeous... my favorite lines are "在你手里握住了明天" (you hold tomorrow in your hands) and "谁是谁曾经的原点", which the video translates as "who is the origin of who once was?" which is more of a literal translation. to me, it's more of a rhetorical question--are you my point of origin or am i yours? that thought of two people being so entangled within each other, their lives so enmeshed that they can no longer know where this love began... oh boy 🥺 fits mlt couple so well.

this song is fucking heartbreaking. the lyric translation isn't the best but you get the gist of it. i am so drawn to this idea of love persisting despite time, despite change, despite everything.

留住你一面 画在我心间 (a part of you is drawn in my heart) 谁也拿不走 初见的画面 (nobody can take away the memory of the first time we met) 哪怕是岁月 篡改我红颜 (even if time takes away my youth and beauty) 你还是昔日 多情的少年 (you will remain that passionate youth) (in my heart/memories--not in the actual line but that’s the implication)

this part of the chorus... fuck. this is OC absolutely. the next part of the chorus talks about the speaker’s bones remembering the night she had with him 😭😭😭 just the idea of keeping something for yourself no matter what happens in the real life. just like oc tucks her memories of jeonha away in her heart 🥺

i am OBSESSED with Zhou Shen!! his voice is so fucking gorgeous. and this song--though it’s about a whale, lol, i think a lot of it crosses over into MLT. these lines get me in the SOUL every time:

怕你飞远去 怕你离我而去 (i’m afraid of you flying away, afraid of you leaving me) 跟怕你永远停留在这里 (but i’m more afraid of you staying here forever)

😭😭😭 jfc... i haven’t seen the film so i think it’s about a child learning how to let go of a mystical beast they’ve made friends with(?) but yeah.... this feeling of wanting to keep the person with you but also knowing that they should leave!!! the entire song is just full of this dreamy ocean imagery, which i love. 

also the final lines when they let the whale go... 

每一滴泪水 都像你流淌去 (every tear drop flows towards you) 倒流回最初的相遇 (ebbing back to where we first met)

... 😭 that feeling of wanting to go back to the start, to where it all started, knowing time cannot rewind. but you just so desperately want to keep these memories alive... sigh.
