the concept of city of rights here in the netherlands will never not be funny to me. you're only allowed to call your village a city if you have city rights. how do you get city rights? well you had to get them back in the middle ages when they were still available. obviously. it's way too late now and there's no way to get them anymore. as a result this means towns with 30 inhabitants are formally counted as cities while cities with over 196.000 inhabitants are formally counted as villages. phenomenal system

#also when i googled this i found out ppl are very adamant about not recognising the hague (one of the biggest cities here) as a city #bc it got its city rights in the 19th century which is UNACCEPTABLE and FAKE!#half a million inhabitants.... a quaint village i think!#also to my dutchuals the 30 inhabitants city is called staverden #and almere is the largest place i could find without city rights (196k inhabitants)#personal
