I headcanon that post-royal Akechi wrote a million letters for Akira yet, never sent them
A million of words trying to explain himself, to where he was, or why he wasn't around
A million words of whatever the hell they had, and the occasional honest ones that longed for his presence, even if it were just his coffee or the way he barely talked yet had the best conversations
Maybe he wrote them during rehab, maybe in his new apartment in who knows where, maybe on his days off of working with the anti-shadow unit, maybe when he wants to take his mind of a case...
And maybe in a place beyond all that, one where he can only wait for time to bring them together again

Every time I think about the fact that Akechi was Joker’s justice, and vice versa, I lose my mind at how intimate it is.
Akechi made you promise before he died to take down the man that had hurt you both, and when another man brought him back to play puppets he asks you to put an end to it as well. Akechi’s justice was never about him doing the final strike, his was allowing someone else to do it for him. His justice was having someone who cared enough to listen to him, and to do as he wished.
But for Joker, his justice was taking down the man who had killed his friend and framed him with his own two hands. His justice was deciding, that no, he refused to live in an illusion and then did something about it himself. Joker’s justice was taking the injustice done to you, and those around you, and being given the chance to end it yourself.
Akechi’s justice was having someone listen, and Joker’s justice was being given the chance to enact it himself. They perfectly mirrored each other, and understood what the other needed without even saying anything about it. It’s just so intimate, how could I not lose my mind over them?

Akira being like, obsessed w loyalty, but having it as a positive(ish) trait is so fun to me. He doesnt outright say it or ever ask for it, but theres like an unspoken bond between the thieves and himself. He asks for it (demands, really) because he gives it in return. Its the classic ‘ride or die’ mentality; he demands trust and loyalty bc he 100% trusts his team. He would not have baited himself into what would be considered his literal death if he was not COMPLETELY and UTTERLY faithful to his team and the cause. He trusted them to fulfill their end of the bargain no matter how difficult that wouldve been for them. And because of their mutual faith in each other, leader to team and team to leader, they all managed to make it out and live another school year.
He has very little regard for his life but hes not necessarily reckless. Hes calculated. And while hes a bit out of sorts in the beginning with all of these new ideas and concepts, he quickly finds his footing later in the year. And bc he is assembling a team of people who are loyal to Him, he can afford to be loyal right back to them. He can afford to be risky if the risk is mitigated by having his team follow up on his actions. This team has to run like a well oiled machine; any hiccups will get the rest of the team caught or worse; hurt or killed.
Ryuji inadvertently sets this trend, bc he is Ride or Die at heart and he somewhat influences Akira on this matter. And its why he is so reluctant to truly incorporate Goro onto the team (at first). Goro IMMEDIATELY clocks Akiras leadership as something heavier than simply ‘i lead this group to keep everyone on the same page’, but he wrongly assumes Akira has some sort of Thing about power. Theres no real power trip; he is not okay with limiting his teams voices on any matter. His ideas are not the end all, be all of any plan; hes Not Shido. I can imagine how tough Saes Palace was for everyone, but they needed to have unwavering faith in each other to pull off such a mindblowing plan.
I dunno where else im going w this, i just like thinking of Goro feeling some kinda way about Akira (and the thieves) unanimously declaring him as the leader of the thieves fully knowing what shady things theyve done up until this point. Someone who claims to change peoples hearts is deciding who gets to keep their free will or not, and to have a team basically say ‘yes hes our leader and we would die for him’ does NOT look good to anyone! Especially to someone who is quite literally killing people on behalf of someone Very Bad! Who then Dies for it!

⸻ engrossed in palettes of blues and greens , accompanied by a shimmer , belonging to a surface that encourages critters to breach , akira spectates aquatic life. joining him , aside from his trusty feline companion , is none other than the renowned prodigy.
kitagawa yusuke , who decors himself in sleek garb , living and breathing his innate art. a detail , the trickster himself had complimented when they first met up. gazing in awe and wonderment at the visage of his confidant.
which now switches to the containers that surround them , housing a myriad of creatures. exhibiting their array of patterns and colours , where illumination reaches the pair with the transparency of the medium they swim through. producing a kaleidoscope of hues , that would undoubtedly pique the colour theory yusuke often dabbled in.
before he can swivel , to gauge whether inspiration had struck , it is instead the fox that chimes in. beating the wildcard to the punch.
at first , he simply blinks — once then twice , as if he were still comprehending the unprompted confession. before he smiles , sweetly , and slings an arm around the far too solemn student , initiating his bubble of a chuckle.
❝ yeah ? well , the feeling’s mutual. hey , remember the first time we met ? you sure scared takamaki. ❞ another slip of mirth circulates around the tightknit duo , but by its coda , his expression softens. leaving his voice to follow suit. ❝ you’ve become such a huge part of my life , yusuke. i don’t think it’ll ever be the same without you. ❞
at that second , his palm waves , as if to dismiss the sentimentality that wraps his phrasing. ❝ ah , well , i know it certainly wouldn’t be as colourful as it is now. i had no idea there were so many different shades of blue. remind me again , what you said the water was ? ultramarine , right ? ❞
