I chair my union's Women's Committee, and every once in a great while someone will make a half-joking comment about how "imagine if I suggested we have a Men's Committee though", and it's so frustrating because I would fucking love for us to have a Men's Committee!
Construction workers have sky-high rates of suicide, addiction, and overdoses, and I pin a large part of that on a culture that encourages machismo and masculine posturing. I think a lot of construction workers have lowkey trauma about the dangerous conditions they work in, but the culture insists that anyone who cares about safety isn't a real man. People accept that this job will break your body down and cause medical issues down the line, but if you take steps to protect your body - like using team lifts instead of insisting you'll carry 100 pounds of pipe up three flights of stairs by yourself - you're a wimp. Hazing the new guys often crosses into outright abuse, very often focused on ridiculing the masculinity of the victim, but if you stand up for yourself you're a pussy who can't handle a few jokes. Men in the trades are often invested in feeling like they are the provider and protector of their families, but this can make them feel like their self-worth is tied up entirely in what they can provide and not who they are as a person. Guys who have hobbies that aren't masculine enough are mocked relentlessly, because Real Men only like drinking and hunting.
Our Women's Committee focuses on issues that impact women the most, but the membership and the help we offer is open to anyone in the union regardless of gender. I would love to see a Men's Committee that works under the same idea, addressing these issues! But on the one hand, yes, I do think our business manager might reject the idea as appearing sexist or pointless. And on the other hand, I don't think the men who make those comments to me would actually be interested in a Men's Committee if we did have one, they just wanted to take jabs at me because they feel like I'm getting special treatment just for being a woman (never mind that this committee is essentially a part-time unpaid job for me).
The one guy that actually DID care about reaching out to and helping young men eventually left the union to focus on running a city-wide initiative instead, because he wasn't getting any support from his union brothers. It's fucking hard to help people who won't meet you halfway.

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?
Honestly, he has all 5 love languages, words of affirmation â he needs to know that you love him, and he himself will declare everyday, every hour, every minute, how much he loves you. Quality time and Physical touch, both go hand in hand as cuddling is a big part of both of your routines. And as an Isolating type, itâs inevitable that he would always stay by your side if youâre locked up in the castle.
Acts of service, another one thatâs important to him, if he serves you well, that means heâs a good husband and lover right? Worshippers are usually this way so thatâs understandable. And finally, gift giving, heâs a prince, money is not a problem to him, so anything that your heart desires, be it jewelry, another kingdom, or the horns of the great fae, nothing will stop him if you ask for it.
Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?
He himself will not spill blood, but everyone knows he is the crown prince of a whole kingdom, and that kingdom has many people that adore him. Ordering the guards to kill those who are a threat to you and him is easy to do, having people accept the murders is even easier.
Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?
Heâs actually a very good host, heâs very attentive and makes sure that all your needs are met, be it food or entertainment, heâll be happy to serve you well.
He would never do anything that would mock you, for it shows how much of a bad lover he is. Itâs supposed to be a happy ending, so why would he say anything negative to you? Both of you should be happy and his heart canât take it if he does anything bad to you, outside locking you up that is.
Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darlingâs will?
Nope, he's too much of a good boy for that. He's more of a worshipper, obsessive type. So to him, you are more important than he would ever be. Anything that is outside of your comfort zone is a big no.
Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?
VERY VULNERABLE! He could never, ever, manage to hide his love for you, from his words to his body language, itâs obvious how much love is packed in that body of his. He is, and always will be honest, he just has a way to word it so people will not think ill of his person. As a prince, clear communication and flowery words are important, to you though, both of those are thrown out the window.Â
Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?
Incredibly sad, the only reason why you would fight back is because you still haven't learned to love him! That's why you're very irritable, right? He just needs to understand you, as your true love it is important to know everything about you.
So, of course he'll do anything! W-well except letting you go of course...
Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?
Itâs not a game to him, itâs a life or death situation, literally. His curse makes him desperate to find his true love, but also, heâd rather die than not have you, or in this case, stay in eternal sleep because he knows the only way heâd wake up is from your kiss.
Hell: What would be their darlingâs worst experience with them?
The worst thing that he'll do is isolate you until you love him, he wouldn't hurt you, he wouldn't force you to love him. Instead he will wait... Wait by your side as he takes care of you, wait on his knees as he looks at you like you hung the moon, wait until you finally love him.
Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?
Marriage and children! Also ruling over the rosen kingdom. Itâs a royalâs duty to create heirs for the throne, and as his true love, marriage is inevitable right?Â
Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?
He definitely does, itâs incredibly obvious too considering it shows so expressively on his face, how his cheeks puffs up in jealousy, mouth turned down into a pout, and how he grips your sleeve so tightly. He never blames you for it though, rather, itâs always going to be the other personâs fault for trying to seduce you. His way of coping is believing that the other person is just a toy of yours, one day youâll get sick of them and finally go back to him.
Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?
So in love, itâs actually harder for him to mask his emotions when heâs around you. Yes, he manages to keep his face still but there are other parts of him that are harder to control. The redness of his cheeks, the trembling of his hands, the weakening of his knees, and the growing love for you in between his legs. If you are good at reading people, youâll realise there's so many parts of him that sing a different song.
Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?
Oh heâs very sweet, usually courtship is very straightforward during his time, often just straight up asking if they wish to be wed during a ball, even arranged marriage is part of it. Lilian however, has the right to choose who and how heâll court someone. I can see him courting you with gifts and such, and though he rarely sings, he is willing to woo you with his amazing voice. Every chance where he gets to sing in front of you, heâll take it. Heâll even dedicate a whole song just for you. (Idol! Lilian everyone? Also Once upon a dream by Lana del Rey)
Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?
Yes and no. He still acts the same with you and with the other people, his kindness and beauty is for all. However, the only difference is that with other people he is calm, even with uncomfortable situations he is still as level headed as the crown prince should be.
On the other hand, when he's with you, it gets harder to control his emotions. Even if he looks calm on the outside, just know he is so close to losing control of his affection for you. It becomes obvious when part of his routine is to find you to talk to you or just stalk you.
Naughty: How would they punish their darling?
Isolation, and more bonding time with him! If you tried to escape or managed to actually escape, he'd just try harder to make you love him so you wouldn't escape. Physically hurting you is a big no no. To him, how he treats you reflects on what kind of person he is. If he hurts you, he's no more less than a brute.
Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?
Only being able to get out of the room. However, heâll make it so all of the things you need are available to you. Entertainment, books, anything that you need heâll bring it to you. Heâll do anything, as long as itâs not letting you go outside until you fall in love with him.
Patience: How patient are they with their darling?
Very patient, he is not blessed with kindness for nothing. To be fair, he never sees anything as your fault, itâll always be him or someone else.Â
Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?
Never. As his only true love, his heart will always be with you. If you die, his heart is buried with you. If you escape, he will do anything to find you, if you manage to escape to a neighbouring kingdom... Menelaus started a war to bring Helen of Troy back, do you think he will not do the same?
Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?
Yes he does feel incredibly guilty, but he wouldnât let you go. Itâs more of a risk for the whole kingdom if he lets you go, because everybody knows it's only time before he regrets letting you go. War is not off the table if he knows one of the kingdoms is harbouring you.
Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?
Since his birth, he has been revered for being the beloved prince of the Rosen Kingdom. From childhood to adulthood, he is expected to be lovely and kind to everyone, though it comes naturally to him, it still tires him at times. Due to his curse, his parents become overprotective, fearing that the great fae will find him and hurt him before the cursed day comes. He rarely gets to go out of the castle due to this, instead he would stay in the library when he has free time. He discovers books through this where there is always a happy ending in every fairytale.
He thinks of himself as a damsel in distress, being stuck in the castle guarded because of his status. Since then he always tries to seek out his prince charming, or his knight in shining armour, or just his true love. Because if he finds his true love, the person who loves him for him and not his charm, the person who will save him from his curse... He'll be able to finally live normally...
Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?
Devastated! Heâll cry with you, for his heart is yours, and when you cry, his heart will cry. He already basically isolates you so, itâs not as odd, however if it extends to you refusing to touch him, heâs very pouty and sad. He needs his daily affection or heâll be heartbroken.
Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?
For this one, I donât know, what classifies a classic yandere? Is it the dominant abusive type that seems to be most popular today? Or the âI will kill everybody who even looks at youâ type? There are many definitions of a classic yandere, these two are what Iâve seen a lot in other stories.
In that case, heâs the type to never hurt you, heâs mainly a submissive and worshipper type, with other types mixed in (Obsessive type as I said in Darling). He truly, truly loves you, and he refuses to even harm a single strand of your hair. Killing people is too much for him, oftentimes letting servants do it for him. He is still kind at heart, as is the blessing given by his fairy godmother.Â
Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?
His love for you! As I said for Darling, he is the worshipper type, so your word is law. If it means making you happy, he's willing to do anything, as long as you make sure not to make him aware of your plans to escape. If you do manage to escape though, you can barely get anywhere before you get caught by the guards.Â
You can escape Lilian yes, but you cannot escape the kingdom itself, especially from his influence.
Witâs end: Would they ever hurt their darling?
Nope! Hurting you also hurts him, how he treats you reflects on how he is as a person. Please refer to Unique and Naughty for more info!
Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?
So, so much. You are more important than anything in his life, after all, you are the one who would dictate whether he lives past 21 or not. Well, you and the great fae but! He only wants you. Money, fame, and power and one of the few things he can give. His entire being is also not off the table.
Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?
Honestly, until the day before his 21st birthday. However, the closer that day comes, the more desperate he becomes. Of course, heâll want his curse to break and you are the only one who could, so before that happens he makes sure that you fall in love with him. If you still reject him, heâll lose the will to keep going and accept his inevitable eternal sleep. At least then he will be dreaming of you forever.
Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?
Only by accident, one person can only stay in one place for so long before they go crazy. Yes, Lilian is there with you, but talking to only one person everyday can cause so many issues. Desperation can make you do things youâll regret, breaking you is one of them. Letâs just hope itâs Stockholm syndrome and not your will to live.Â

Whatâs your fannish ID? Udekai! Friends call me Stu. Stu came from the first OC I ever had- which was essentially just a blue scribble with a bowler hat.
What types of fanworks do you create? I've done mostly art throughout my whole campaign, but fic has become a bigger and bigger thing over the years. I've always been good with literature, and when I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer. The only reason art got so big was because it's easier to doodle on the margins of your schoolwork than brainstorm a story. That turned into dabbling in animation; I only have the energy for a couple of those a year, but I feel like I've gotten pretty good at it!
What are your favourite types of fanworks, when youâre not creating? Nothing- and I mean nothing- beats a good AMV. Fics are a close second, but something about seeing something move in time with the beat of a good song is just beautiful.
What do you like in particular about this fandom? I definitely should have watched Daredevil sooner. I've been keeping up with the MCU since the first avenger and my cousin said "watch Daredevil." I said I love angst and my cousin said "please watch Daredevil. I started kickboxing as a means to cope with stress, and my cousin fell to his knees and begged me to watch Daredevil. I didn't actually watch it until I was reading Deadpool fics after reading all his comics, and found Team Red. I was enamored immediately. I came for the show and stayed for the people. So far, everyone I've met is an absolute peach. Everyone's extremely accepting, mature, and communicative. I'm partial to Mattfoggy as a ship, with some dabbling in Kastle. Best friends to lovers has always been my favorite trope, followed closely by hurt/comfort, so there's no wonder why that one spoke to me.
Do you like participating in fan events? I do! I didn't use to, because deadlines intimidate me, but that is a great motivator to actually. Yknow. Finish things, which I can have a little bit of trouble with. They've been teaching me to be okay with publishing things that I haven't had the chance to pick apart and overthink. I'm also making way more than I would be without somebody offering ideas and schedules to work on. I've never done a con, nor do I really see myself doing one in the future, just because I get so flustered when fawn over my work.
What about your creating process? It's a different story every time! I live in a kind of chaotic environment that I have very little control over, so I tend to opt for headphones to keep out noisy distractions. Sometimes, though, even that's a little much to work around, and I have to go find somewhere quiet. My process with fics would make every literature teacher I've ever met weep. There's a fic I have right now that's 250k words, and the planning document reads like I just scrawled it on the walls of my living room. It helps with writer's block sometimes to just type out a stream of consciousness, all of the "uhms" and "no that doesn't make sense" included. As for inspiration, half the time I start out with a single scene in my head and build around it. That goes for fics, animations, and art. I like to get heavy with parallels between canon and whatever I'm doing, and by the end, I can almost guarantee me brain's a massive cobweb of ideas. I find being comfortable is also really important. And I mean physically comfortable. I steal the computer chair to write at the kitchen table for its back support, because when I create, I do it for literally days on end. I try not to begrudge myself the 20 minute scrolling breaks; pressure to work on something always has a way of taking away the enjoyment, and by extension, my ability to actually think creatively. And coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
Do you interact a lot with other fans? I do! I've always been in a lot of discords, but now almost half of them are Daredevil related. I've got my beloved mutuals on Tumblr, and all these people who participate in events. I'm not exactly wanting for company, but anyone who knows me can vouch that I'm a little bit of a social butterfly.
Is there any particular piece you'd like to showcase for this post? That 250k fic I mentioned earlier: Incarnate. I mention it because it's my pride and joy and because I need to finish it.
Do you have other fandoms you'd like to talk about? I tend to do one fandom at a time. They take up my entire headspace. No vacancy.

what's your thought crime Opinions
how nice of you to ask!
as a disclaimer, this is less about the commonly discussed concepts of mental illness & harmless sexual/romantic fantasies seen under the original post and more about the less than normal kinds of thoughts that can be harder to talk about in a neutral way for a lot of people. proceed with caution, i suppose.
i don't have anything to say about thought crime that hasn't already been said, i think. but i do hold, from my experience, controversial & unpopular opinions surrounding thoughts, desires, attractions, urges, and feelings vs. actions where it relates to violence and sexuality.
i don't immediately reign judgement on people who experience some or all of the above surrounding the likes of incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, non/dubious consent/rape, mutilation/murder, etc. these things would be undoubtedly unethical and, to most, detestable to act on, but simply experiencing those feelings & thinking those thoughts & having those urges or desires is not something i'm interested in demonizing someone for. human beings are incapable of controlling their thoughts/feelings/attractions. if we weren't, we would never feel anxiety or grief or anger, people with OCD & intrusive thoughts would eliminate them before they appeared, queer people in conservative spaces and/or grappling with internalized homophobia would simply choose to not be queer. we know this isn't how it works, so why would it be any different for the unsavory ones, the socially unacceptable?
this isn't to say it's just chill that some people sit around having fantasies about certain things; i do think destigmatizing needs to also come with unpacking and rehabilitation where appropriate and measures to prevent violent acts, but the cultural obsession with morality is probably my biggest gripe with the conversation surrounding violent thoughts and violence in general; how morality is the highest priority, the means by which we must categorize the world in terms of "good" people and "bad" people, the end all be all to understanding and solving the issue of violence and, therefore, the only thing that really matters when observing these categorically "bad" people². all this, despite the fact that morality is entirely subjective and does nothing to actually prevent or treat violence because one's perception of right and wrong varies widely from person to person depending on endless variables. contrary to popular belief, the world cannot be broken down into such simple parts; good and bad, right and wrong, just and unjust. the world is nuanced, gray, and not altogether easy to understand.
i'm as passionate as i am about this (and about protecting freedom of speech and expression in fictional media where this topic is concerned too, another conversation altogether) because the shame and dehumanizing that happens in response to someone expressing violent thoughts or compulsions is what ultimately leads to real life harmš. i believe it's important to foster an environment where people can feel comfortable talking about these things because with that comes feeling comfortable asking for help and preventing violence from the start, which is ultimately what we want, right? to listen to, show compassion for, and aid people with "immoral" thoughts (and predators, while we're at it) is to participate in creating a safe community for everyone³.
punishment begets more violence, not less, and it's troubling how popular the opposite sentiment seems to be. i'm frankly tired of seeing people make black and white moral judgements that are not at all black and white (i.e. thinking about something one has never acted on). it's okay to feel a way about things but, as far as i'm concerned, a person's actions are far more important than what goes on inside their head, or what they choose to write, draw, read, or watch for that matter (unless it's legitimate pornography involving real life parties right like obviously that is very bad because it results in and perpetuates real life harm, lets be reasonable here BUT even in these cases, the answer is not to demonize. there could be cases in which a person might very well be incapable of change or remorse (debatable) and in those cases, sure, but i believe the majority of the time such violence can be not only treated, but prevented by recognizing their humanity and doing what we can to foster it. the ultimate goal being, of course, to prevent violence. but i digress, that is another conversation also lol)
š James Gilligan has talked extensively on this topic, the correlation between shame & violence, and how treatable and preventable it really is if we could dispel the notion that predators are inhuman, some sort of separate evil species incapable of treatment and understanding and "deserving" of punishment. His book, Preventing Violence, is a great place to start, or this interview if you can't access it (highly recommend, it is a fascinating read). ² See also James Gilligan. Morality is the Problem, where he talks about morality as a means to justify violence on both sides of the coin.
Âł i also feel it necessary to make clear that it's not anyone's, and particularly any victim's, responsibility to bear the burden of showing compassion to or otherwise protecting someone who has harmed or wanted to harm others. i just hope to highlight the importance of recognizing and considering the humanity in those individuals because the most effective way of changing someone for the better is allowing them the space to do so, should they be receptive to it. because monsters don't exist, human beings who do unforgivable things do. and, yes, even those human beings need compassion from others.

I'm not adding to this to argue with anyone, and idk what op's follower count is like, nor do I care. But I would like to comment on two parts (second part is under the cut):
people don't come here to network, and it's a little strange to look at your followers purely as a means of distributing your own content.
Some people do. That was why I joined Tumblr in like 2010 when I was doing freelance illustration. It's quite literally an income stream for some artists who do commissions.
For the majority of us who are not hoping to support our livelihoods by sharing work on Tumblr, the complaints regarding low interaction are not about 'distributing our own content.' I've said it a dozen times and seen other people say the same thing: it's about having some sense of community and shared interests with peopleânot pointless numbers of likes on a post.
I couldn't care less about likes on Tumblr or kudos on AO3; if someone enjoys what I made for my own enjoyment and then decided to share free of charge, what's wrong with me wanting to hear from them? Most artists (including gif makers, podficcers, etc.) and writers on this site aren't here to churn out 'content' for randos who give nothing back. We're here because we love a thing and want to share our creations with other people who love it and will scream about it with us.
I just... don't understand why that seems unreasonable to some folks?
whether you're an artist or a memeposter or just a regular fucking person with 12 followers, YOUR own followers are your primary audience. as in, the people who saw your art and liked it so much they decided to stick around. and those people are very likely sharing your stuff anyway.
I 100% agree, except they're not sharing it. And I have no idea what it's like for other people who have shared art or fics on Tumblr, but over the past few years, I've still been getting lots of followers. And yet, things like reblogs and comments have only gone down. I'd say that, by the time I stopped posting my stuff on Tumblr about six months ago, I was usually getting far fewer than 100 reblogs on fan art (even days or weeks after posting them), which is about 2% of the people who followed me at that point. And most of those reblogs had no tags, so they were still very impersonal.
So no, I don't expect people who don't follow me to interact with the things I share. But I'd much rather have 100 followers who actually treat me like a human being than thousands who take and never give back.
That's why I like AO3 for sharing fics and art: so far, at least, the attitude of, "I deserve fics and art without even acknowledging the people who make it" hasn't permeated the community over there as much.
Finally, I'm not even writing all this for my own benefit; with the exception of a few events, I don't share my work here and don't plan to start again. But I think it's important for Tumblr users to try and consider all this from the perspective of people who are still sharing their creations here.
Imagine if someone irl said they like the things you make, and you just finished something, so you run over and show it to them. How would you feel if they looked at it and just walked away without a word?
Sure, participation isn't compulsory, but fandom wouldn't exist if everyone acted that way. :/
i agree that its a little strange to see just how big the discrepancy is between active users who post and reblog things and passive users who limit themselves to liking posts and/or voting in polls... but i also resent this idea of like. compulsory participation.
if people want to lurk, let them lurk. does it align with the core idea of a microblogging platform? not really, no. but tumblr is a public website and maybe its high time for some people to get more comfortable with the idea that you're always going to have a silent, invisible audience on the internet, who will read and watch and look at and listen to your stuff without making themselves known. thats the main difference between closed social networks like facebook, where you have total control over who sees what, and (semi) public platforms like tumblr.
yes, the whole like/reblog ratio thing has gotten worse recently, and im sure there are a lot of newcomers who simply aren't sure how to get started with a blog of their own (it definitely took me a while to start reblogging things when i first joined. and it was another few years until i eventually started making my own posts lol) and its good to encourage them, but i dont see how guilt tripping people is going to change anything, especially wrt artists

Itâs clear from all of the data analyzed so far that fans who took the time to answer our survey love Undertale. It is unlikely that they would have taken the time to answer so many questions if they had not, and even less likely that they would have come across our survey in the first place. Naturally, it comes as no surprise that 63% of our responders gave their love for Undertale a score of ten out of ten. 95% gave their love for Undertale a score of eight or higher, and only 12 responders responded with five or below, a number so small that their responses had to be lumped together to be visible on the pie chart. Of those, only 3 responders gave their love for Undertale a score of 1, and based on those respondersâ other answers, it is likely that they were only intending to troll. We are very fortunate that the vast majority of responders took the survey seriously, enough so that responses like this are barely a blip in the data.
Now, for our final analysis post of the event, we will delve into the reasons that fans love Undertale so dearly.

There have been countless essays on the impact that Undertale has had on peopleâs lives. I can hardly add more on the subject than what has already been said, but I hope this summary can provide a brief overview of what stood out among the over two thousand answers given in response to this survey. That said, due to the sheer volume of answers, I could not read every single one in depthâhowever, I did skim all of them, and some that stood out or were representative of several responses have been highlighted below. If you would like to see what every fan who consented to share their response had to say, you may view the full list of responses here. Note that these responses have not been edited in any way. This document may take a long time to load, as it is over 100 pages long.

Several responders loved the theme of choices mattering in Undertale. Whether people played the pacifist, merciless, or neutral routes, they enjoyed how the game reacted to their actions. For some, it even made them consider their own morality. One touching response explained the impact that the theme of mercy made on them. âI realized that Mercy isn't something that's given to those who deserve it. Flowey didn't deserve it. I don't deserve it myself. Shoot, we ALL need Mercy in our lives.â Many fans left similar comments about how the themes of Undertale made them better people.
Undertale changed how its fans treat others, and it also changed how fans treat themselves. The theme of staying determined and the messages of hope in the game were a light to a very large portion of fans. I cannot list all of the fans who said that Undertale helped them out of a dark place, or that they would not be alive if not for Undertale. âDETERMINATION became a metaphor for not killing myself at a really rough time in my life and Iâll always cherish that. Undertale isnât afraid to go to really dark places but at the same time holds on so tight to its hope.â
Undertale brought fans together in unexpected ways. Some said they met friends or significant others through the fandom. âI wouldn't have met my now husband without Undertale,â one fan said. A different fan who is non-native English speaking mentioned that the game and the fan community helped them to learn English.
It would be impossible to discuss Undertale without mentioning the fan community. Whether for good or bad, many responders mentioned the fandom in their responses. Overall the feelings towards the fandom seem positive, though many made references to âtoxicâ parts of the fandom without specifying which parts they consider toxic. Others rejected the idea of toxicity in fandom. One response said: â[SLAMS FIST ON DESK] I KNOW MOST PEOPLE SAY THE FANDOM IS TOXIC AND CRINGE OR WHATEVER BUT OH MY GOD. The Undertale fandom, both the UTMV and the actual UT fandom, has been so much fun to be a part of. I've met countless friends because of our shared interest in something related to the game! The art people create can be breathtaking and so inspirational, and the fanfics are so so good!! I've seen people write incredible things for this fandom and it's what made me continue writing!â
One thing that makes the Undertale fandom unique is the way it embraces various AUs. Some fans are tired of AU content, but the majority of responses show a love for the creativity behind AUs. âRoll your eyes at the 50th AU Sans all you want, it's encouraging people to step outside the boundaries of fanart and pushing people to make their own ideas! I mean, hell, it was how I gained the confidence to start making my own original content.â The lack of a judgemental atmosphere seems present in the AU community, according to the responses we saw. There is an interesting balance between AU and canon (sometimes referred to as âclassicâ) content that another responder pointed out: âThe fandom helped keep the game alive all these years, with all of its AUs. Although personally, I always enjoyed AUs that kept characters as close to the classic material as possible (dancetale, outertale) I do appreciate the creativity of the fandom. They almost created entirely new stories with new characters of their own! If it weren't for those people, the Undertale fandom would have probably not been as active as it is now. I do feel like we're getting a resurgence of classic content now too! (In 2021)â
Regardless of the many AUs the fandom has created over the years, the original game of Undertale still feels like home for many fans. They wished they could reclaim the feeling of playing the game again for the first time, but even though we canât reset time in real life, there is still a special feeling for fans each time they play Undertale. One fan said, âEven the best fics I've read can't capture that feeling of nostalgia/almost-"coming home" that comes with hearing the music and talking to the characters.â This feeling is one that can be cherished time and time again. In the words of another responder: âIt always feels welcoming like home or like comfort food that I never grow tired of no matter how many times I go to it.â Others pointed out the strength of the found family trope in Undertale, which likely contributes to this feeling of âhomeâ as well.
As mentioned briefly earlier, the music is part of what makes Undertale feel like home for fans. Even when responses focused on other aspects of the game, many would throw in a comment about the soundtrack at the end. One comment focused on the music said âIT'S SO GOOD like I will literally go through the entire thing over and over and not be bored with it. It makes my monkey brain so happy you have no idea.â Like with the game itself, the music has incredible replay value, an amazing feat considering most of the tracks use the same few motifs. âI think what I like the most about Undertale is how the music attaches you to the story,â another responder said. âThey're simple melodies that stick with you throughout the whole game, and they can remind you of both good and bad times.â
If the music sticks with fans in their hearts, then the gameâs lore sticks with fans in their minds. Even six years after the release of Undertale, fans are still creating new theories and digging up new secrets. The way the game breaks the fourth wall in particular intrigued many fans and has stuck out through all these years. The awareness that the game shows for the RPG genre makes it memorable. The game plays with the playerâs expectations and turns them on their heads, all while reminding the player that theyâre in a game. There are few other games that do this on such a large scale, so itâs no surprise that fans cite this as one of their favorite things about Undertale.
Lastly, the LGBT+ representation in Undertale has been a huge draw for fans. Especially in 2015, the sheer volume of non-cishet characters was unprecedented, as one fan pointed out: âIt's practically unheard of to see so MANY from just one source, especially during its heyday in 2015-16. Hell, you can't even GET the true pacifist ending without helping two gay couples hook up. It's really nice to see all of them being accepted for who they are and not judged for their sexuality or gender, at least in-canon.â The LGBT+ cast including Frisk, Chara, Napstablook, Monster Kid, Mettaton, Alphys, and Undyne each connected with fans in unique ways. Itâs clear how important this is from responses such as: âThere are canon nonbinary characters đĽş. i have never seen representation of myself before.â âIt made me gay and trans so thanks for that.â
Once again I am overwhelmed with just how much there is to say about Undertale. One responder really understood when they compared Undertale to an iceberg, explaining that there are so many layers to the game that there is something for everyone: âeveryone can find something to enjoy in the lore/game regardless of what kind of fan they are! Being able to appeal to various types of fansâfrom simple happy shipper people to deep dive lorediggersâis the mark of the coolest games!â I would have to agree with them.
Itâs been six years, and despite everything, itâs still you. Thank you for reading, participating in this survey, and above all, staying determined.

The music is my go to answer, but what I really really REALLY love is how the minor characters have so much personality to them when you talk to them. They aren't incredibly important to the overall story, but they're all so likeable and diverse that you just can't help but like them immediately!
I think it was the first videogame I have played that broke the fourth wall that much. Of course there has been other videogames that broke it but just for one or two tongue-in-cheek jokes. The guilt of killing mama goat was also something intense as well that I appreciated as an experience and that I didn't think a videogame could cause on someone.
I love how no character can be seen as completely bad! Everyone builds up Asgore as some horrible villain, but he turns out to be a 'fuzzy pushover' who's broken and just wants his family back by the time you meet him. Then you think Flowey's an irredeemable killer who engineered the suffering of the monsters across many timelines, and he is... but he also used to be the kind and beloved Prince Asriel Dreemurr, traumatized by his death and subsequent rebirth, projecting his best friend onto you.
The fact that choices matter in the game. Your first playthrough and getting the golden ending for the first time. I can never replicate those feelings again, wish I could erase my memories and replay the game from the start.
I wouldn't have met my now husband without Undertale.
(Toxic parts of the fandom aside) The community is possibly one of the kindest I've ever met. Cringe culture is completely dead, and I feel like I can be myself. I felt a very close connection to many of the characters, and I loved consuming content about them when I was in a rough patch in my life.
just everything, the whole game has just impacted my life so much. i know it sounds really lame, but when the game first came out, i would purposely put my hands in my pockets and sway slightly, like sans' idle animation. of course i dont do that anymore haha, but undertale still really impacts me to this day, and i wouldnt have it any other way :)

The thing I love most about Undertale is no matter how many times I play or watch a playthrough it always makes me genuinely happy. It always feels welcoming like home or like comfort food that I never grow tired of no matter how many times I go to it. Toriel still makes me feel all warm and cozy in her home, the Skelebros always make me laugh, and I still cry on the inside watching Frisk comforting Asriel. And on the flip side the No Mercy run still invokes the negative emotions in me as well. In short Undertale just feels like a second home to me and I always wish I could stay.

I think Undertale helped me discover my love for 8-bit games, and made me realize how IMPORTANT music is in video games.
the worldbuilding and character design are my favorite parts of the main game apart from the music! There's a scene where Frisk (the player) is going towards what is presumably going to be their death. They will fight Asgore and he will use their human soul to break the barrier and free his people. The music, despite the player's impending doom, is... triumphant. You are not the triumphant one here, and yet, the score invites you to experience the monsters' joy and happiness as they tell you the tale of their subjugation. The monsters are going to be free. This is their victory, but they don't hate you or want you to die. They're just... happy. That scene has always struck me very deeply. I feel it represents the best parts of Undertale.
I loved how well thought out the Geno route was. It really made me feel like I was doing something horrible, and the characters were very obviously reacting to dire circumstances.

I was very bad at english before, i thought i couldn't progress because i was very shy and not confident. But my sibling and i wanted to have the best experience with this game so we wanted to play it in english. It's this game and the fandom which helped me to make huge progress in english !

I love almost everything about Undertale as a game on its own. The music, the art and especially the characters and how they interact. They made me feel at home. Undertale means a huge amount to me. I just feel guilty for liking it so much when I'm in my 30's. But I recently got diagnosed with ASD, so I guess it explains things a bit. Many ppl consider Papyrus to be neurodivergent, and some adult fans are too, so seeing that makes me feel a bit better.
i think about "Despite everything, it's still you" everyday of my life.
I like how it's just as funny as it can be serious. All routes are this way. I laughed as much as I cried when I played the Pacifist route and then once I opened the game again and Flowey was telling me to let them be happy, I immediately turned off the game. I somehow felt bad.

the other thing that i keep thinking about, especially now that iâve been knee-deep in conversation about kakashiâs father for the last couple days, is the amount of politically/socially-charged context kakashi must be constantly navigating as a leaf shinobi, even though we donât get to see much of it. Â
the transformation of the hidden leaf village is obviously still a work in progress, and society never changes overnight. weâve heard at various points in shippuden about the still-present divide between hardliners like danzo and the (somewhat) more moderate senju line, and itâs clear that there are still plenty of reactionary/conservative forces at work in the shinobi world, which means there are absolutely still segments of the population who would view the kind of challenge that kakashi and his students pose to traditional shinobi values as a threat. and back when kakashi first chose to reaffirm his fatherâs principles, iâm sure it was much worse - the way minato tells it, the entire village and the land of fire turned on sakumo, and itâs not like all those people just disappeared when kakashi finally allowed himself to recognize that all of them were doing something wrong. they were still there. they were his neighbors. they were his colleagues. he had to live with them. he had to work with them - he had to work FOR them, even. to this day, he still does.
like. i am FASCINATED by the complexities of this situation, even though we barely see any of it. just...thinking about thirteen year-old kakashi being a member of the Jonin Assembly alongside all of these grown adults who persecuted his father until the âgreat man who everyone looked up toâ couldnât survive it any longer. thinking about teenage kakashi lost and âwaiting to dieâ in the anbu black ops, but still breaking every rule to rescue little tenzo from a hardline conservative who tried to have kakashi assassinated. thinking about adult kakashi, still a member of that same Jonin Assembly, still working alongside people he can clearly remember harassing and attacking his father for saving their lives, being asked to serve as a clandestine hokage under danzoâs nose, because foreign nations trust kakashi where they donât trust the actual nominee, and then being nominated for real when danzo turns up dead (and having his nomination approved, i might add, by the land of fire, whose government officially blamed kakashiâs father for the damage that resulted from that abandoned mission years before).
we only get hints about the lingering controversy surrounding kakashi and his family via danzo and, occasionally, the village elders, but like. kakashi occupies such a complex place in the hidden leaf village, because heâs become incredibly respected and renowned by many (if not most) of its residents, but he also spends every day of his life moving within a community where many (if not most) of the older people around him participated in a campaign of vicious harassment against his father, one that ultimately led to his death. some of them may have had changes of heart after sakumoâs suicide - that seems like the kind of thing that might have shocked some people into reevaluating their positions, particularly given how respected sakumo was prior to that time - and some of them probably died later in the war, but we know thereâs still a conservative faction active in the hidden leaf village, and some of those people are always going to be who they are. and even the people who arenât - even the ones who regret how they acted - itâs still so complicated! how do you continue to live and work in that environment? how do you navigate a history of being harmed in that way, when you still have to collaborate with and/or serve the same people who did the harming, some of whom likely view you with the exact same disdain they had for your father?
kakashi manages it, somehow, though iâll bet he has complicated feelings about it, even if he keeps them to himself. and thatâs yet another reason why (if i can just take these thoughts on a slight detour to the present) i think kakashiâs relationship with sasuke is so vitally important, especially moving forward. sasukeâs family was wronged by the village too, in horrific, unforgivable ways - the shinobi system swallowed itachi whole and sacrificed the entire uchiha clan on the altar of a mission, in exactly the kind of evil, inhuman decision-making process that sakumo and obito and kakashi said could never be justified. the uchiha were victims of the same shinobi system that drove kakashiâs father to his death - the one that said âeverything is acceptable as long as the task at hand is accomplished. people are disposable in service to a mission.â both sasuke and kakashiâs families fell to a cultural context that refused to acknowledge that it is never okay to sacrifice your comrades for a mission, a cultural context that embraced this belief to the point where even literal genocide became excusable.
if sasuke is ever going to really and truly Come Home, heâs going to need to learn how to navigate this situation. not to excuse the wrong that was done, and certainly not to give up on getting justice for himself and his clan, but also to figure out, in conjunction with these important tasks, how to continue existing in an environment where so much officially-sanctioned harm was done to his person, and where so many people around him have at least a little bit of history of being suspicious of or uncharitable towards the uchiha clan, even though they obviously didnât know about the impending coup or danzoâs extermination order. Â
itâs an incredibly complicated situation, and even if kakashi doesnât have all the answers, he can at least understand what it feels like to be in that kind of position. heâs been navigating something like this for many, many years. heâs the precedent, someone who can help sasuke wrestle with the perhaps unanswerable questions of how am i supposed to dedicate myself to a place that wronged me like this? why should i protect people who hurt me so badly? is there even a way for me to move forward here, if i canât forgive the ones who took my family away from me? can this actually be my home again, when i know what it did to my people?
kakashi has obviously managed to come up with answers to these questions that enable him to stay integrated in his community and keep building a future he believes in, though I doubt any of his answers are simple, and iâm sure there are some things that heâs just had to accept will never be fully settled in his heart. itâs like what he says to obito in an episode i watched recently: âi donât know anything for sure, either...iâve thought that this world is hell, too...but...â itâs the but that matters. even in the face of confusion and complexity, kakashi has found a way to keep moving. heâs learned to co-exist with the uncertainty and discomfort surrounding him, and to make his own meaning out of this life, regardless of how complicated his internal relationship with the village might be. heâs found a way to keep his eyes trained on the light, whatever that light might look like for him, and even if said light is only, as gaara says, âthe faintest glimmer.â he has so much to teach someone like sasuke, who up until recently was responding to that same plea of gaaraâs with a fatalistic âi shut my eyes a long time ago. the things i seek now lie only in the darkness.âÂ
anyway. i am just having Many Thoughts currently about the intricacies of the political and social context that kakashi is always navigating, even though he never says a word about it. and iâm curious whether this family history will ever come up again in the last fifth of this show. if i were going on instinct alone, iâd suspect that we werenât quite done with sakumo yet - i feel like we barely even started with him, to be honest (and also - whatever happened to kakashiâs mother???) - but i should know better at this point than to try and predict what this show is going to do, so iâll just wait and see.

Survey Writing Guide: Fandom Edition
Sooo! People are collecting survey data on fandom! Makes sense â fandom is an interesting population to study, and getting data on attitudes/behaviors/etc is a great way to try to find out the truth about popular points of contention about media. To get unbiased, meaningful data, though, youâll want to make sure your survey is in good shape. This is a guide to try to help you do that.
I am assuming, if you are reading this, that you want your survey to be unbiased and interpretable, sampling from as many viewpoints as possible and getting data on opinions you might agree and disagree with. In other words, I am assuming that you want to do your fandom research in good faith. If that is not why you are making a fandom survey, then you can ignore this whole post. I would ask you to reconsider running a bad-faith fandom survey, but I canât stop you. But just know that my assumption is that youâre out here in the honest pursuit of truth.
Iâm not accusing a survey of being done in bad faith if it doesnât follow my suggestions. I also realize most people are conducting these surveys in their spare time because theyâre passionate & curious, not for the purpose of serious publication or whatever. Iâm not telling you that you have to follow all or even any of the advice here. Do what you feel good about doing. Fandom should be fun!Â
This guide is only about surveys themselves, and will not help you get a good sample of your fandom. In other words, none of this advice will make sure your survey reaches obscure corners of your fandom, insular communities you arenât in, or casual fans. A good survey is important, but itâs only one part of getting accurate data, and participation recruitment is a whole other thing.Â
This is also only intended to help with survey setup, not analysis or results reporting. You can write a great, unbiased, easy to understand survey, and still present your results in a way that is biased/doesnât include good information/is hard to understand. Furthermore, once your results are public, theyâre out of your hands: you might be well-meaning, but please keep in mind that some people might use your data to make unfair or incorrect assumptions about others, support biased arguments, or generally behave unpleasantly. Thatâs just part of survey work; donât let it stop you, but donât be surprised if/when it happens.

Think about how to structure your questions
Use multiple choice answers/avoid free response answers as much as possible. This is going to be really helpful for you when itâs time to analyze your data: itâs so much easier to analyze responses that are just clicks of a box than responses that require you to read someoneâs long explanation of an opinion and try to figure out what they mean. It also makes answering easier on your participants: clicking a box is a lot easier for them than writing out what they think. Giving an option for them to expand on their answer in a free response text box is great, but try to capture as many possible responses as you can in multiple choice questions.
Consider: should participants be able to give more than one response per question? A good rule of thumb for this is if different responses to a question are mutually exclusive or not: if they are mutually exclusive, only give people the option of clicking one box; if theyâre not, let them choose as many as they want. For example, if you want to know somebodyâs ONE favorite season of a show, only let them choose one season. If you want to know ALL the seasons they like, give them the option to choose multiple.
Only include one question per questionÂ
A LOT of surveys ask questions that are actually several questions in one, and that makes answering them difficult! For example, you might THINK youâre only asking one thing if you say âAre you introverted or shy?â as a yes/no question, but that is actually two questions: some people are introverted but not shy; some people are shy but not introverted; some people are both introverted and shy, and some people are neither. People who respond âyesâ might mean they are one or the other or both, and people who respond ânoâ might mean they are one or the other or neither â and youâll have no way of knowing, because your question was too ambiguous.
If youâre asking a question about a nuanced topic, make sure your question and possible responses are nuanced too
People in fandom have a lot of complex views, and giving them only a black-and-white way to tell you about those views means you will miss out on nuance and get inaccurate results. If you are wondering about opinions on a controversial pairing, asking âDo you think itâs okay to ship Reylo?â (for example) and only letting people respond yes or no is not going to capture the range of opinions that exist on Reylo. If you can include multiple answer boxes for people to click, do that!Â
Analyzing free response data (where people can write their own answer) is hard on you, as the survey writer, and people might not feel like explaining their opinions. Definitely include a free response box if you want, but also provide a lot of options for responses.Â
The more controversial the topic youâre asking about, the more nuance you should let your participants give in their responses. People in fandom often have very strong and very complex opinions about certain issues; youâll want to make sure not to flatten those opinions too much, while still keeping them simple enough to analyze. Asking âdo you enjoy reading fluff?â is (probably) not going to be too complicated, and youâll likely be fine giving people 2-3 response options (yes/always, sometimes, no/never). But you should give a lot more response options if youâre asking âis it ever acceptable to ship two siblings together?â: some people will be fine with âyes, alwaysâ or âno, never,â but a LOT of people are going to want to specify conditions like âonly if they are not blood relativesâ or âonly if it is framed as being badâ or âitâs acceptable sometimes but I personally avoid it,â etc. Make sure people without clear-cut opinions have the ability to give you their opinions too.
Use simple, clear language
Use language that is as simple and precise as possible. Keep questions short when you can. Avoid using a lot of slang and regional idioms: people come from all over the place in fandom, and might not know what you mean. People also have a lot of different reading levels: you want to make sure most of your participants can understand what youâre asking them.Â
There are some terms you can assume everyone in your sample will know, and some that you canât: itâs up to you to figure out which terms are which. For example, most people in tumblr fandom space will understand what a ship is. They might not know what âICâ means though, so you might need to write it out as âin character.â Further, pretty much everyone in the MCU fandom might know what âStuckyâ is, but not as many will know what âCoulwhipâ is. You can make these kinds of technical terms easier for people to understand by just writing out all abbreviations and writing all pairings in the Name/Name format.
Use neutral language and keep your personal opinions out of it
Avoid inserting your own opinions into your survey, even if you expect that almost everyone participating will agree with you. Even âobviousâ jokes wonât read as jokes to everyone; you might upset/offend/put off some group of participants disproportionately such that they wonât complete the survey, and youâll miss a chunk of data you want. This is a problem, because say, for example, you really want to know if peopleâs favorite Supernatural ship has any correlation to fansâ personality traits â but if you poked fun at Dean somewhere else in your survey in a way that made Dean fans click off the page, then youâre going to lose a lot of Dean fan data that it would have been really useful for you to have, since Dean is a very popular character to ship with a lot of other characters.Â
A good-faith survey is also not the place to moralize. Fandom can be a very polarized place; you are not going to be able to predict which things you ask about are going to be morally objectionable to your participants, and if theyâre going to agree with your moral judgments. Your results might surprise you! A survey where you hope to get accurate data is not the place to defend a problematic character you like or to call some group of shippers gross. Your best bet for not causing issues is to include stuff thatâs controversial and to be as neutral about it as possible â for example, if you are asking about ships people like, include every reasonably popular ship (potentially excluding rarepairs/extreme rarepairs just because itâs hard to include all of those), even the ones you hate/think are harmful/whatever, and donât comment on the goodness or badness of any of them.Â
Avoid âleadingâ questions to avoid bias
If you say, âDo you love this awesome TV show?â thatâs going to be awkward to respond to for everyone whose answer is anything other than âyes.â Something like âWhat is your opinion of this TV show?â (with responses like: I love it, I like it, I have mixed feelings about it, I am neutral toward it, I dislike it, and I hate it) will give you a better sense of peopleâs genuine thoughts.
Select your multiple choice options thoughtfully
Be as egalitarian as possible in the options you provide to your fandom-specific questions that arenât free response. If you leave out a major character on a list of favorite characters, for example, your participants are going to wonder why you did that â and you might not get data about that character, especially if you donât include a free response option.Â
Avoid bias in your multiple choice answer options
If you ask people for their favorite and least favorite [something], make sure the list of [something] options for both of those questions is identical. For example, if youâre asking about peopleâs most liked and most disliked ships, make sure the list of ships you include for both questions is the same. Including Sylvie/Loki only on the âship you most dislikeâ but not the âship you most likeâ list might seem like a reasonable move to you if you donât know anybody who (openly) likes Sylvie/Loki, but doing that will bias responses and make your data inaccurate. Some people will stop filling out the survey, some people who like Sylkie just wonât want to bother filling in the blank, some people might forget that they like Sylkie unless itâs right in front of their eyes as one of the response options, some people will feel judged and so they wonât answer your survey honestly, etc.Â
Follow common best practices advice for demographic information
Collecting information on respondentsâ ages, genders, race/ethnicity, employment status, education history, etc is, luckily, very common, so there are a lot of standard questions about those things. Iâll just go ahead and list what I sometimes collect in my own surveys:
Age: for anonymous fandom surveys, I suggest using age groups (under 13, 13-18, 19-25, 26-35, etc) instead of asking people for their precise ages. Just make sure to include all possible age brackets. For example, donât assume everyone in fandom is under 50.
Gender: unless you want a lot of nuance in your responses, itâs typically enough to include a list like: man/boy or male, woman/girl or female, nonbinary, genderfluid or bigender, and other. If you are interested in trans people specifically, I suggest asking that in a separate question (like: âDo you identify as transgender?â), rather than including binary trans identities in addition to binary cis identities in the same question. The exception to this is if you are including a very long list of gender options.
Race/ethnicity: (disclaimer that most of the data I collect comes from the US, so my best practices are most suited to that population. I welcome any feedback about the best way to ask about this for an international and/or non-US population.) I typically ask something like: âWhich category best describes you?â and then give the options: American Indian or Native Alaskan, Asian, Black, Hispanic or Latinx, Middle Eastern or North African, Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, White, and other. Ideally, this list should allow multiple responses, so that multiracial/multiethnic people can give accurate reports.
Employment status: âWhat is your employment status?â with responses: employed full time, employed part-time, unemployed and looking for work, unemployed and not looking for work, self-employed, homemaker, student, and retired. If possible, let this be multiple choice, so that, for example, people who are students AND work can select both applicable options.
Education level: âWhat is your highest level of education?â with responses: some high school, high school diploma or equivalent, some college, college degree, some graduate education, Masterâs degree, Doctorate degree, professional degree (e.g. M.D., J.D., M.Div, etc)Â
Sexual orientation: like with gender, you probably donât need to provide a long, comprehensive list unless your survey is about sexual orientation specifically. Something like the following is probably enough to cover most of your respondents: âWhat is your sexual orientation?â with responses: straight/heterosexual, gay/lesbian/homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, and other.Â
Other questions: just try to make sure you are providing response options that will cover the majority of your participants, and include an âotherâ option if youâre not sure youâve covered everything. There are a fair number of basic best practices documents for common demographics questions that you can find through Google, so if youâre not sure how to ask something, give it a quick search. You can also ask people you know who might know more about some specific demographic quality than you do to weigh in!

aries moon
Probably the simplest, most bluntly honest and emotionally direct of all the Moon signs, they tend to be single-minded when involved in their latest enthusiasm, not liking to be bothered (least of all by âemotionalâ distractions or someone elseâs âpersonal needsâ). Most of them will have thousands of such interests in their lives, each of which takes on a feeling of pressing importance and tremendous urgency ⌠until they lose interest when the source of excitement is no longer new. Very action-oriented and thus often a bit pushy, they frequently react impatiently, even when they are not nearly so annoyed or irritated as others may assume from their explosive behavior. Aries above all needs new challenges throughout their lives. Often fearless, the one fear Aries Moon does have is fear of boredom. They always need a new challenge.
They are usually poor listeners, not just because of their obsessive self-interest but also because they tend to jump to conclusions (unless they have, say, lots of Gemini or Libra in their charts, in which case the result is people who can be superb at âactive listeningââquickly grasping the essentials and energetically giving lots of instant feedback). Actually, as one perceptive woman with Aries Moon pointed out to me, they need to feel that they are not influenced by others, and therefore they appear not to be listening to othersâ advice or observations. And yet, months later, they may inadvertently reveal that they heard it very well and even reflected on it and accepted it later.
Easily bored, restless, rather self-centered, they are by nature competitiveâeven though many of them donât like to acknowledge it. They simply have to be the best at everything! As one woman wrote, âTwo women I know with Aries Moon are domineering. They think they know all the answers, and that they are always rightâ (AQ). However, even though instinctively competitive, they do not tend to hold a grudge since they move on to their next interest so quicklyâunless they see the other person as an enemy to their freedom who is trying to control or limit them. They are in fact extremely self-sufficient; they prefer independence and the freedom to act without restriction and rarely seek any kind of input from others.
Women with Aries Moon (or Sun for that matter) often use âtoxic masculinityâ at least in a gentle, non doctrinaire way, because they respect strength and competitiveness, and thus have little time for weeping and moaning from others.
Men with Aries Moon tend to expect a lot from women. In women it gives a strong sense of purpose and freedom.
A thirty-year-old female wrote the following about men with Moon in Aries:
âThey seem to totally involve their attention in a very direct and powerful way in the scrutiny of new âdata,â often to the extent of monopolizing conversations or othersâ attention until their interest wanes or changes focus. Theyâre also very self-centered: their ideas, their action, their feelings come first, and they donât usually have a lot of empathy for the needs or feelings of others; theyâll listen, but theyâre not consistently good with feedback or support.â
Aries Moon can be outspoken and tactless. Their emotional reactions to stimuli seem raw, completely spontaneous and uncensored.
leo moon
Those with Leo Moon react warmly, generously, and often with enthusiasm and/or humor. There is a childlike simplicity about them, and in fact their notable pride often resembles that of a child as well. These people need recognition and demonstrative affection, and their pride is often hurt if such attention is not given in sufficient and public ways. Like all the fixed signs (Taurus, Scorpio, and Aquarius being the others), Leo is a sign of extremes; and it is therefore difficult to paint a balanced picture of their personal tendencies. They are often shallow and prone to flattery, and yet they have considerable personal integrity, which is not usually compromised. Needing to live up to a big and rather dramatized image of themselves, the Leo Moon person can be rather a show-off. But they do it with such innocence and high expectations that they are often forgiven for their tendency toward self-absorption and dramatization. In fact, it seems they are so in need of attention and so childlike themselves that in very few cases do they have room for children in their lives, even though they often have a natural way with kids and can be great parents. Although not a scientific fact, all the Leo Moons I can think of offhand have either no children or only one child.
They can be loyal, sometimes blindly loyal to the point of foolish behavior that has a negative impact on everyone concerned; and they can be generous (but they do not mind if others notice their benevolence). Shortsightedness is perhaps one of Leo Moonâs worst faults. Some âcannot see past the ends of their nosesâ and are so self-absorbed that they do not even notice othersâ reactions to their sometimes obnoxious, grandiose behavior. This shortsightedness surprisingly extends to their understanding of their own potential. It has always amazed me how many Leo Moon people (with innate talents and ability in abundance!) sell themselves short and wind up worldly failures in comparison to what they had the ability to do. I cannot help but suspect that one reason for this is that their huge pride prevents them from ever listening to (or asking for) honest feedback about themselves. Perhaps they secretly fear that they are not quite up to their self-image. They are known for being insulted easily, so they naturally do not want to expose their fragile ego to criticism, no matter how well-intentioned. But unless they develop a deeper self-understanding and the ability to accept authentic personal communication from others, they may remain engaging in their earnestness and simplicity, but it can eventually wear thin, like a person who never grows up.
Leo Moon people have a capacity for encouraging others that can be extremely supportive and strengthening in a crisis. They can be as solid a support system as one could ever want, but in other cases they seem fanatically convinced that they are having a great, positive impact on others (regardless of the truth) and they want to be thanked for it. Being admired is a central need in many with this Moon placement. (Note that Leo Moon is much more passive than Leo Sun, who is usually busy creating and doing.) There is a deep-down feeling of needing to live up to an image of bigness and greatness, even if they wind up resenting others for not noticing all that they have given. In short, the vast range of Leo Moon personalities evokes extreme reactions, and they are probably included in anyoneâs list of people whom one has either deeply loved or strongly resented! Note the extreme and varied qualities noted about Leo Moon in this questionnaire response:
âPeople with the Moon in Leo always like to be on top of things. They like attention and some can be easily appealed to through the ego. Moon in Leo makes for dynamic personal expression. These people tend to make their presence felt.⌠the person often tries very hard to make others see them as somebody special, getting mixed reactions from others. While tending to be somewhat opinionated these people can make good listeners, can be very concerned, very caring even if a little overbearing. Moon in Leo is gregarious, dynamic, and can be very creative.â
Another perceptive observation about them:
âMoons in Leo are emotionally melodramatic. Theyâre easily upset, and tend to get fixated on what theyâre feeling, sometimes to the point that their feelings become a major issue in which everyone around them has to participate. They like the excitement of having everyoneâs attention on them, even when the price for that is an argument or some kind of conflict. Once theyâve satisfied themselves that they have everyoneâs full attention, theyâll usually happily drop the issue and magnanimously allow someone else the âspotlight.â Theyâre performers.â
sagittarius moon
Tolerant, broad-minded, with a buoyant attitude toward life, those with Sagittarius Moon are idealistic by nature and instinctively react with a philosophical attitude toward any setback, knowing that the future (not the past!) is what matters. They are most comfortable when exploring ideas, ideals, or outdoor places and love a sense of freedom without limits. The distant horizon is always felt as more appealing than the here and now. They particularly need mental freedom (including religious and spiritual room to improve themselves), since their aspirations are not just high but boundless. In fact, the term âupbeatâ was invented by a Sagittarius Moon! As one Sag Moon woman always repeated as her mantra, âI see the glass as half-full, not half-empty.â They like to entertain groups of people with their humor. In fact, they want to say yes to every opportunity; they want to feel that life is unbounded by any limits, and so they tend to instinctively promise far more than they can ever deliver. They assume, I suppose, that everyone else forgets as many immediate details as they do, a habit that backfires when angry friends and colleagues confront them demanding to know why the promise did not follow through. As a questionnaire reply asserted, âA need to be all things to all peopleâ characterizes Sagittarius Moon. Generosity and âbignessâ are dominant factors in their lives and in their sense of reality and self-image.
Sagittarius is the sign most likely to be oblivious to the realities right in front of them that are obvious to everyone else, so focused are they on the distant goal. Since the road to hell is paved with good intentions, Sagittarius Moon people need to be sure that their goals and ideals are grounded in what is truly possible. They do need a large guiding vision to motivate them in life, but they also need periodic times of self-examination to assess whether they are themselves living up to their ideals. They like to preach to others (usually âhelpfully,â in their view), but if something does not work out, well, that is not their problem. Sagittarius Moon people rather dislike the heaviness of daily ârealityâ and personal or emotional problems.
They have difficulty handling any criticism and often in fact become more indignant than any other signâa pride that is usually hidden and often surprises others who take their positive, happy demeanor at face value. As Donna Cunningham wrote, âThe things that set Sagittarius Moon people off are having one of their pet theories or convictions demolishedâ. This pride, manifesting at times as a rather exalted view of oneself (perhaps as the only one who can reveal the âtruthâ), is part of the dualistic nature of Sagittarius, the symbol for which is the centaurâhalf horse and half human. Sagittarius has the lifelong task of integrating their more idealistic nature with their more unrefined, impulsive, egocentric tendencies. At their worst, they are so proud of their âhonestyâ (sometimes viewed by other people as tactless bluntness) and of their own moral or intellectual righteousness thatâunless more humble or sensitive factors are also dominant in the chartâthey can be so uncompromising in their mode of expression that they are often perceived as inconsiderate and unnecessarily hurtful.
Perhaps the key for Sagittarius Moon people to feel authentically at home with themselves is to apply their honesty to themselves as bluntly as they express it to others! They often think too highly of themselves and want to project an admirable image to others. They like to feel idealistic and upstanding, but if they look at themselves honestly, they often have to admit that they are not as impeccably honorable as they like to think; for they can rationalize their behavior as well as anyone when it is convenient or advantageous to do so. Sagittarius Moon is thus a good example of the fact that how people feel about themselves (always directly related to the Moon in anyoneâs birth chart) is not necessarily how others see them and their behavior.
A couple quotations from questionnaires can round out this description of Sagittarius Moon:
âEasygoing, gets along with and accepts strangers without discriminationâthough sometimes self-righteous and snobbish. Independent emotionally, doesnât seem to need so much from one as they can get from many.â
âMoon in Sagittarius can be very high-minded, they respond very actively to life. These people can try to push others or just be domineering in general. They can be a little pushy but this is generally out of enthusiasm. For both sexes, can be very direct. For menâvery honest in attitude, they say what is on their mind. For women this is also a very blunt placement. Both sexes can often be tactless; they speak the truth as they see it and figure that others should just accept it no matter how hard it is to swallow.â

jsaghka whats wrong with ok ko?
Okay so I will spoil the whole main plot of the series with it but there are 3 main problems Iâm gonna get into with this series and itâs problems with character design, jokes on child neglect, and ableism with system caricatures. And this is coming from someone who enjoys the show before anyone thinks Iâm just hating to hate on it. But again, these issues are so big for me that I would not recommend this show to anyone skjhskjf.
1. Issues with character design
Alright, so first off, please look at this picture of the majority of the women of the show and tell me whatâs wrong with it?
Yeah! Almost all of them have the exact same body type! Iâve seen people praise ok ko with its diverse character design but if you boil it down, almost all the women have the same cinched waist and big hips. And for the characters the characters that do have different body types, it's almost unfair to compare them to the rest of the characters, like you canât compare Carol to Rippy Roo because Rippy Roo is an actual animal. And you canât compare Dendy to Enid, because Dendy is a child and Enid is a teenager. And for the Ladies that have an actual difference in body type, thatâs like 6 characters out of how many? And to those characters that have different body types, the Hue Troops only show up for 2 episodes and even then the main focus isnât on them so they barely get any screen time, Punching Trudy shows up for one episode to fight Punching Judy, Pheobe shows up for 7 episodes but sheâs a background character and I donât ever remember her speaking, and then thereâs Foxtail. Foxtail is probably the only female character that has a different body type that has an important role in the story and shows up for more than just background appearances.
Compared to the men in the show, there is way more diversity but even then, there is a lot of making the upper half of them bigger and giving them tiny hips and legs.Â
There is also the issue that kinda pisses me off is the racial ambiguity of everyone. Like most of the characters arenât even human so whatever, but there are characters like enid that have darker skin but she has straight purple hair so what are we supposed to get from that? I mean, I guess there is some wiggle room for anyone that isnât white to claim her but then you start to see that all these darker skinned characters seem to always have straight hair and thatâs also a problem. The only character I can confidently say is black is foxtail and she has straight hair. And the only character that is said to have curls and an afro is RADICLES who is BLUE and an ALIEN! Like it makes me mad that our curly haired and black coded character is designed like this. Like, I get it, heâs an alien, heâs blue, heâs not human, BUT WHY DID HE HAVE TO BE THE ONLY ONE? WHY CANâT THERE BE ANOTHER CHARACTER WHO IS DARKER SKINNED AND CURLY HAIRED?Â
Itâs so ironic given that ok ko has one of the BEST racism metaphors Iâve ever seen in episode 28. Dendy says kappas donât need pow cards to be heros but it feels nice to be appreciated but this show is not making me feel very appreciated right now sjglksjgds.
2. Jokes about child neglect/abuse
OKAY! BOXMAN! I LOVE BOXMAN BUT WHAT THE FUCK?
Okay, so in the show, Lord Boxman has robot minions that he is constantly annoyed with the performance of and punishes them and yells at them. AND I WOULDNâT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS IF BOXMAN DIDNâT REFER TO THEM AS HIS CHILDREN! Itâs shown in the show that Boxman raised them as baby robots and they call him daddy and they have a very familial relationship. But itâs constantly joked about with Boxman saying how they never make him proud not taken seriously in the show. Like, in the second episode, one of the first things we see Boxman do is put Darrel in the furnace and Darrel says âI deserve thisâ BUT DONâT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY CUS DARREL IS A ROBOT AND HEâS BACK 2 SECONDS LATER! The robots get emotional over any sense of approval, like at the end of âVillains Night Inâ Darrel and Shannon literally fall apart after Boxman gives them shirts and says to âkeep up the good workâ, and the end of Plazalypmics, Darrel, Shannon, and Raymond get participation trophies and are really happy with that. Like, this isnât normal.
The whole relationship between the robots and Boxman is actually pretty toxic and kind of bothers me sometimes. The robots seem to have a very intense sibling rivalry but itâs over the affection of Boxman, which is unhealthy but most of the time itâs just played off as funny joke for the tv. And it becomes even more apparent because episodes without Boxman, like Rad likes robots, it shows them getting along fine and even worrying about each other. And in season 2, Boxman comes back from the sun and Darrel stands up to him and says he doesnât need him anymore, but one âIâm proud of youâ from Boxman and Darrel is back to wanting his approval. LIKE ITS ALMOST NEVER FRAMED AS A BAD THING OR TAKEN SERIOUSLY! I AM NOT A FAN OF HOW THEY TREAT THIS! Like, I can admit it gets better after Venomous comes into the picture and Boxman has that realization of âoh I should be proud of my kids achievementsâ but to me it looks like this whole forgiving your abuser plot line and I fucking hate it! And Boxman still admits to incinerating his robots after the company switches over to his and Venomousâ ownership when discussing what to do to punish them and he says âI usually see improvement in my robots after I incinerate them.âÂ
And even if it got better, itâs still played off as a joke in all of season one and normalizes terrible behavior. Child neglect in tv shows, especially in childrenâs media, played off jokes and funny are never good and can be insensitive to children who are in these situations seeing it played up for laughs. You can argue that being on the villainâs side frames it as a bad thing but that kinda loses meaning in a show like ok ko where you start to see the villains as regular people and not necessarily bad, just âevilâ. I just feel like this could have been treated so much better and not trivialized like this.
3. System Caricatures and ableism
Let me start off by saying, I am a singlet and I donât have as much authority on this type of thing so feel free to correct me on anything I get wrong or add on in anyway.Â
With that said, KO and TKO along with Shadowy Figure and Professor Venomous are terrible system caricatures. KO is 6-11 years old is prime age to develop a system, so when shadowy figure comes into KOâs life and traumatizes him, he splits. And so we begin our little âevil alter egoâ(quoting the show! using this phrasing is terrible and should never describe a system like that) stereotype.
Iâve talked about OK KO with my friends who are systems and it makes them mad that this show had so many moments to be good system rep and then it turns around and fucks everything up! Like TKO could have been written well. TKO is very clear on stating he isnât KO and is his own person but everyone still refers to him KO and treats him like a bad thing because he isnât KO. And when TKO acts out due to being referred to as KO and rightfully being upset, they act like it is some evil act against them and they need KO back! Like, the show misses its own point so much!!! If they treated TKO like a person (which he is!!!!!) then half the problems they have wouldnât be a problem in the first place. And TKO has done nothing wrong other than wanting to front! KO even talks about TKO as another person but they address him as such!Â
The way people talk about TKO in this show makes me so mad, like when Dendy does tests on KO in âMystery Science Fair 201Xâ to bring out TKO, TKO finally comes out to deal with the feelings KO canât deal with and then they almost do it right when Dendy realizes she was the one that fucked up and then SHE APOLOGIZES TO KO INSTEAD OF TKO FSDGHSDFJ!!! And they always treat TKO as a threat as if heâs a danger! Like TKOâs a kid just like KO and acted out when the people around him upset him! Like a kid! And the last time TKO shows up in season one in the finale, TKO actually SAVES everyone in the plaza and leads the battle away from the plaza but because âoh but TKO is the evilâ they go and try to stop him from saving them? Like yeah he got a little reckless but he only ended up hurting people in the plaza when Rad and Enid interfered. They treat him like a problem because they MAKE him a problem!Â
Also, the moments where everyone tries to bring KO back by saying âyou are lovedâ and all that, thatâs actually really manipulative! Like, theyâre using positive triggers to kick TKO out of front and thatâs actually a really rude thing to do. Theyâre trying to bring to front who THEY want to see and itâs not fair to TKO who is fronting. It also goes the other way around when Dendy is experimenting on TKO to try and get him to front.
And then even KO treats him terribly, locking him in a cage, then keeping him in his head all the time, and then when he finally lets TKO out and TKO acts out from being locked in his own head for so long, KO then traps TKO in his subconscious. Which is terrible! TKO should be allowed to front and should be treated like his own person! Itâs so weird how the show almost gets it right but then does shit like this that makes it terrible again. Like KO has a headspace and he creates things in his headspace and he talks to TKO like another person and they communicate their feelings but then the show turns this all on their head when KO locks TKO away and blames him for destroying everything when heâs the one trapping him in his brain.Â
There is also the problem with TKO being the one with all the power and changing his appearance cus that all contributes to the system caricature. Also, TKO and KO integrating at the end of the series? ALSO VERY BAD AND HARMFUL CARICATURE! Alters are different people and they should be treated as different people and KO is not TKO all along THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE! And integration is possible but itâs usually not by choice. And even then, integration being the end goal of a story is a very ableist narrative and shouldnât be written.
And it confuses me, why does shadowy figure have his own pow card but TKO doesnât. Like, KO and TKO are established more as being different people than Shadowy Figure and Venomous so why doesnât he get his own pow card? Like the end of season one, TKO fought the fight at the plaza and used his power to defeat Boxman jr but at the end KO ends up leveling up instead. And on the topic of TKOâs power, again, that shouldnât be a thing. TKO and KO should both have access to the same power because they use the same body because that's how systems work! They use the same body!
And I know what the show was trying to do like âoh TKO is a manifestation of all the bad feelings that KO has!â but there are so many ways to do that without making a caricature of systems. Like if you didnât make TKO a person then this would have been fine. Like if other people didnât see TKO this could have been fine. There are ways to make a manifestation of your negative emotions without doing it like this. And the way this show did it is such bad writing, because you are meant to think TKO is this terrible manifestation of emotions but all you see is this scared kid who doesnât know where he is and lashes out when he gets rightfully upset. BECAUSE LET ME REMIND YOU! TKO AND KO ARE BOTH 6-11 YEARS OLD! THEY ARE KIDS! THEYâRE SITUATION SHOULDNâT BE TREATED THIS WAY
And my guy shadowy figure...... bad. Shadowy Figure and Venomousâ is not only a terrible caricature but also very inaccurate. With KO and TKO, their system developed at the correct time as a child, but with Shadowy Figure and Venomous, they developed after Venomous got his snake disease. And, Venomous doesnât even know about Shadowy Figure and that can be a result of dissociative amnesia but itâs really unfortunate. And again! the end of the series! Shadowy Figure and Venomous integrate into one entity and itâs terrible! Because they arenât the same person and shouldnât be treated as the same person! And again with the whole âevil alter egoâ. Like Shadowy figure only exists to traumatize KO and make him split and create TKO. And the fact that they turn out to be KOâs dad??? Yikes??? Like again, these are terrible caricatures and are harmful to systems and shouldâve been treated better in the show.

Like, I love OK KO, I used to hold this show very close to my heart and made me very happy to see this show with the amount of LGBT rep but looking back it was very bad in many ways. Like that racism episode I mentioned, that shit resonates with me! And I appreciate characters like Dendy and KO and I still love the boxbots and venomous, I just wished this show lived up to the potential that it had.
TL;DR: OK KO has a problem with misogynistic character design and colorism, normalizes child neglect, and has put out an ableist narrative with system caricatures.

So I saw someone else get an anon message that said: âI hate to admit this, but I really can't shake the feeling that Benji loves Victor more than Victor loves Benji at this point.â I wanted to respond as well, because I think this is something people are probably seeing a lot and I really want to explain how Iâm looking at it (from personal experience and just from looking at and examining the characters).

I want to be frank in saying that Benji is my favorite character and I project onto him a lot (along with seeing a lot of myself in him). Iâm also white AF, so Iâm sure some of you think thatâs relevant, but I really donât think it is in this particular case. I do also however identify with Victor in a number of ways and I am trying to see the characters both as complex individuals with deep personal histories. Both have suffered traumas and both are clearly dealing with a lot of their own shit on top of being sixteen/seventeen and dealing with junior year of high school and all the pressures and expectations that brings for everyone.
I think what people are interpreting at loving someone more/less is actually about prioritizing someone/a relationship more/less. In my mind, from what I see on screen and interpret, they both love each other beyond words. They are both very much in love with one another. It comes down to how they display that to each other and to the public as well as where on their list of priorities this relationship falls.
Letâs start with Victor, struggles and life:
He is dealing with internalized homophobia and associated thought-patterns stemming from his upbringing in the Catholic church as well from the vocalized homophobic remarks from his mother (toward himself and Benji as well as likely at other points in his life toward strangers), his father (stating that he hopes Adrian doesnât turn out âlike thatâ; the scene in S1 where theyâre at the church in Texas and he calls the hairdresser âflojitoâ; etc.), and his grandparents (on his birthday and likely at other points in his life). As a result of this, Victor tried to make himself straight (or at least interested in a girl) by dating Mia because he did like her as a person and everyone was telling him thatâs what he was supposed to do. He ended up hurting her and almost losing her friendship (temporarily, he did, but she does seem to have forgiven him now).
He is dealing with outside homophobia as well. That kid on the very first day he was Creekwood responding to Benji helping him up. Felixâs comment that same day of âyou donât want to give people the wrong idea.â The basketball team/gym class guys roasting him about not hooking up with Mia on the ferris wheel. Felix saying heâd be crazy to not like Mia. Lake asking âare you gay or somethingâ when he brought Felix along to Miaâs house, etc., etc. Some of these things may seem innocent enough, but they werenât. Not to Victor who was already struggling to accept even the possibility that he might be gay. Once he managed to come out to his parents, obviously his father got better fairly quickly, but Isabel continued to struggle for six months which put even more pressure on Victor to try to lead this double life. Once he came out at school, the whole fiasco with the basketball team also occurred and that was a lot for him, because Basketball as always his safe-space. Itâs where he went to get away from all the other pressure. It was something he didnât have to think about and now suddenly, he did. Those pressure are also affecting his ability to think about what he may want and it seems affecting his ability to think (at all sometimes) about how any of that is also affecting Benji. Itâs affecting him so much that heâs basically blind to how itâs also affecting Benji to see him suffer. He doesnât even consider that possibility until Felix brings up how hard it is for him the night Felix breaks up with Lake and Venji get caught having sex.
Victor also has struggles away from just his coming out and accepting himself journey. He has the struggles associated with his parents separation. Until fairly recently, Victor always thought his parents had a perfect relationship. He saw that as the ideal. Get together in High School, get married right away, stay together for ever, happily ever after. Thatâs what he was raised to expect. And now heâs seeing their relationship fall apart before his eyes. Hell, his devoutly Catholic mother had an affair, and heâs wondering if itâs really possible for your first love to be your only love especially after he and Benji start butting heads, so heâs already vulnerable to that viewpoint when Rahim brings up the possibility. He gets so lost in whatâs happening to his parents and what Rahim is saying about it not usually working out that he forgets how in love he is and he sort of loses his will to fight for what he wants, because maybe itâs just doomed to fail anyway (until he sees Benji at the wedding and it sort of hits again - and then Felixâs speech thereafter, obviously). He kind of loses his way by getting caught up in the statistic improbability of your first love being the one and watching his parentsâ marriage potentially fall apart and he wonders for a moment if it might be easier, if it might be better to just walk away and go toward Rahim who he seem to get along with and seems to understand the things Benji doesnât about him, but what he fails to examine in that moment is that heâs only barely scratched the surface with Rahim and that Rahim doesnât know him like Benji does and that every relationship has itâs ups and downs and what it always comes down to is how willing both parties are to work to make things right. How much youâre willing to step into the other personâs shoes and try to understand. In my opinion, even if he were to walk away from Benji and go to Rahim, that bubble of understanding isnât going to last forever either. Heâs failing to remember that when he got together with Benji (and for most of the summer it seems) thatâs exactly what it was like and failing to remember that they have grown beyond that into a deep soul-altering love for one another that deserves his time, energy, and effort and NEEDS those things to keep it going.
Now letâs talk about Victorâs priorities in life:
Victor has always been close with his family, especially his mother. The strain on that relationship is very taxing on his mental well-being. He has a hard time âstanding up toâ her or talking back to her, etc. because he loves her and he just wants their easy, close relationship back. He already overcame his own anger at her affair to get her back, but now sheâs the one pulling away because of his sexuality and itâs hurting him because if he was able to forgive her for something that was actually wrong, why canât she forgive him for something that he has no control over. So he loves his mother and his family and he hates disappointing them. He has spent most of his life fixing his familyâs issues (as he explains to Simon in S1), but now he is the issue and he doesnât know how to handle it. When in 2x1 he decides to just bring Benji over and try exposure therapy with his mom, it backfires in a big way. Even though they barely touch each other. Even though Benji just says the word boyfriend once, itâs too much for Isabel and Victor desperately wants to please. He desperately wants to not lose his mother (who has always been the person he is closest to), so that causes him to take a step back from going against her and the steps he still takes (telling her he wants her to call Benji his boyfriend not just his friend, the whole conversation outside the church, the conversation with Adrian, etc.) are things that Benji doesnât get to see happening and it frustrated Victor that Benji wonât even listen to him when he tries to say that his mom is making progress at all, because she is so important to him and yet it seems like Benji just doesnât even recognize or care about that. This leads him to say the thing he does at Brasstown before Benji runs out, because he assumes that it has to do with Benji being white and of course, that is part of it, but I think Victor in that moment is so overwhelmed by the rejection of his mother and now the refusal of his boyfriend to even try to understand that he snaps. He forgets all the struggles Benji has told him from his own past and he just lashes out which causes Benji to leave [more on Benjiâs viewpoint of this whole thing later].
Victor also loves basketball. Itâs true that in some case LGBTQIA+ individual participate in certain activities to make them seem more ânormalâ. Gay men participating in sports to seem more macho is a common one, so Benji thinking thatâs why Victor plays basketball makes sense to an extend, but he never bothers to ask Victor about, only makes assumptions, and Victor feels like the fact that he actually likes sports makes him ânot gay enoughâ (see conversation with Andrew). What heâs forgetting entirely is his encounter with Bram and the gay basketball league in NYC from episode 1x8. There are many ways to be gay, and sports gays do exist and are perfectly valid. Thatâs not the type of gay Benji or his friends/bandmates are, but it is the type that Victor is and Benji failing to recognize that and failing to understand or even ask Victor about that drives one of many wrenches into their relationship. In episode 1x5 when Benji shows up to Victorâs first game back on the team and does the Go Grizzlies dance with the other basketball girlfriends, it definitely does a lot of help Victor realize this was just a miscommunication/misunderstanding rather than anything malicious. Basketball and his teammates continue to be a priority for him after this, but that seems to be something Benji is now capable of understanding.
Finally, Victor loves Benji. He wants to be with Benji; there is zero doubt about that. However, for Victor when heâs put on the spot (as in episode 2x8) and basically told he has to choose his mom (who has raised him and been his closest confidant and biggest supporter for his entire life) or his boyfriend (who heâs known for almost a year and been dating for six months and is helplessly in love with) it processes as an error message in his brain. He just wants everyone to get along. Heâs not mad that Adrian knows that heâs gay (heâs wanted him to know for months), but he is upset that his mom is now even angrier. [see my section about Benji in this moment, for more about Isabelâs reactions as well]Â In his mind, telling Adrian could wait. In his mind, he was willing to go along with his momâs requests for a while longer just to keep the peace so to speak. He didnât want his whole life to fall apart and thatâs what he thought was about to happen in that moment. Thatâs why he asked Benji to leave. He didnât want to make his mom any angrier. Could he have chosen his words better? Yes. Could he have made Benji understand better? Yes. But heâs sixteen and his brain wasnât functioning at full capacity because post-sex brain is definitely a thing and he was also looking at his mom who has already been horrible and barely able to look at him for six months, looking even angrier after he finally thought theyâd made some progress after church the previous week.
So in conclusion, regarding Victor:
He loves his family (especially his mom). He loves Benji. He loves Basketball. Obviously, heâs not going to prioritize basketball over either of the human beings involved, but I think itâs important to at least note itâs importance in his life. As for Isabel vs. Benji. To Victor, these are the two most important people in his life. All he wants is to be able to love both of them and have both of them love him in return. When they are pit against each other, especially directly, itâs hard for him to make a choice. Itâs hard for him to say ânoâ to his mom and itâs hard for him to say ânoâ to Benji, but in the moment (episode 2x8 specifically), he takes Isabelâs side, because he knows the ramifications of saying no to her and of making her even more angry that she already is are far worse than the ones for asking Benji to leave for the night. He failed to realize however, how close Benji already was to the edge and how upset he was going to be and how little he understood (or was willing to try to understand) about the situation. This is something he really needs to communicate with Benji (even though itâs not quite as important now that Isabelâs apparently come around). I think itâs important for Benji to understand that Victor values his relationship with his mother enough that itâs difficult for him to go against her without a lot of preparation and having a fully fledged reason, etc.
Now for Benji - Struggles and Life:
The obvious of course is that Benji is a sixteen/seventeen year old thatâs barely a year sober and attending AA meetings regularly. Recovering from Alcoholism is difficult at any age let alone for a teenager. One of the most important factors in recovery is looking at the things that led you to drink in the first place. Looking at things that may be considered triggers and either learning to avoid those people/situations or learning healthy alternatives in those situations. I have multiple family members who are both actively drinking alcoholics as well as those in recovery. I also lost my best friend/ex-fiancĂŠ to alcoholism a few years ago, so to say I have some personal experience in this arena is putting it lightly. Benji admits to Victor in 1x7 that he used to drink a lot because he knew he was gay, but didnât want to be. To me that whole story screamed, Iâm an alcoholic and while a lot of others agreed with that opinion. I was not shocked that Victor didnât understand that underlying truth. Those that donât have intimate familiarity with alcoholism often do not recognize the signs (either as they happen when when they are not directly told). It is made clear in episodes 2x7 & 2x8 that Benji hates this part of himself, in fact he says as much to Victor when he arrives at his apartment late the night of his birthday. Benji has still not fully accepted that the alcoholic part of himself that attends AA meetings and drinks orange juice while his friends are drinking vodka is one and the same with the part of himself that loves Victor with all his heart. This is something Iâd really like to see him reconcile and work on in season 3 and beyond. Understand that you canât compartmentalize yourself. You are but one whole person and all facets of yourself are in fact part of the singular you. [Not accounting for those with dissociative identity disorder.] Itâs not directly mentioned if heâs still struggling with urges to drink, but most if not all alcoholics do, especially when experiencing those aforementioned triggers. Seeing Benji meeting with his sponsor after the incident with Isabel/Victor is not shocking to me and if anything, that was the healthy and correct response on his part. The reason he was drinking in the first place was that he was gay and didnât want to be (internalized and probably external homophobia) and he just experience some really intense homophobia at the hands of his boyfriendâs mom (and partially said boyfriend himself). Benjiâs lack of understanding of where Isabel was coming from in episode 1x8 speaks volumes to just how traumatize Benji still is about his own experiences with homophobia. The only thing he can think about in that moment is that this woman hates me for being gay. She hates her son for being gay. Being gay isnât okay, etc. What he doesnât factor in is that Isabel is also devoutly Catholic. I honestly donât think itâs the gay part of the sex that horrified her the most. The Catholic faith is also very clear on the practice of abstinence from sex (at all) prior to marriage. She wouldâve responded the same way had she walked in on Victor having sex with a girl, in my opinion, but in the moment Benjiâs own trauma is overriding his ability to understand that because all he can see is the homophobia. This is especially true after she calls him Victorâs friend rather than his boyfriend and that in my opinion, is why he snaps. Could he have phrased it better? Yes. Could he have said it without shouting? Yes. But he is a freshly seventeen-year-old whose brain is not functioning on all cylinders in that moment.
Sort of coupled with his alcoholism and recovery therefrom is the allusion his mother makes to âdark timesâ following his accident. I do have suspicions that perhaps he was also struggling with mental illness, and likely continues to. Depression to the point of suicidal ideation or actions (possibly only in the form of drinking, but possibly in other forms as well). Anxiety is pretty obvious from his actions and reactions throughout the series as well. I also think he is dealing with some sort of trauma-based disorder stemming from the homophobia he experienced (especially the instance of his father taking him to strip-club). It may go as far as C-PTSD (which I myself am diagnosed with) or it maybe something less (or even more). Iâm not in the habit of sticking mental health diagnoses of people (fictional or otherwise though). Dealing with these things on top of what in his eyes feels like rejection from not only Isabel, but in a way from Victor as well likely causes some very unpleasant thought patterns and the potential for thought spirals and the likely. I also see indications that he could suffer from co-dependency (whish I also have dealt with in the past), but Iâm honestly not sure if thatâs me projecting or if itâs actually there.
Then on top of all of that, his boyfriend who he loves more than anything in the world, tells his deepest darkest secret to someone heâs literally never met or spoken to and that said boyfriend has only known for maybe a week at best and thinks itâs no big deal. In that moment, I can 110% see why Benji requests to take a break and I feel that choice is 110% the right one to make. What is a relationship built on if not trust? Victor just destroyed most if not all of the trust Benji had in him. That doesnât mean he stopped loving him, just that he doesnât trust him. Love isnât something you can turn off and on like a light switch especially not the kind these two share. I definitely think Victor has a lot of explaining to do and a lot of apologies to make. I do also think they both need to have a really long, really honest and open conversation. Benji needs to be willing to get a little vulnerable and explain why certain things are causing him so much distress, but he also needs to be willing to listen to Victor explain why he canât simply go against his mother as Benji seems to think he should. They both really demonstrated a degree of selfishness this season along with an lack of communication and a lack of willingness to understand or even try to understand each otherâs points of view and that is a recipe for disaster in any relationship.
There also exists the issue of Benjiâs parents. His mother especially seems to overstep quite frequently and insert herself into his life where she was not invited or expected. I do wonder if this was always her personality or if this is something that started after Benjiâs accident. I have a hunch it was likely the latter. I see indications that perhaps there was some neglect or just general indifference on his parents part as he was growing up. They clearly missed that he had started drinking heavily and that he stole his dadâs car that night. He was also evidently dating Derek for quite a while before the accident. (Derek is another section by himself though.) This not to mention the fact that his father took him to a strip club and paid for a lap dance when he was no more than sixteen if he was even that old, in an effort to turn him straight. Benji tells Victor in episode 1x7 that he and his dad used to be close and that they used to go to Dollywood on road trips and other such things, but that heâs been distant since he came out. We see from the scene where he walks in on Benji and Victor making out that heâs not vocally/outwardly homophobic, but I would not doubt that he still harbors some of those viewpoints in himself. Itâs evident to me that Benji is not close to his parents (he may once have been, but at this point itâs pretty clear that heâs not anymore). Benji doesnât have siblings to the best of our knowledge. Itâs also mentioned that his nana (like a paternal grandmother) is deceased, so itâs really not clear how much contact he even has with his extended family or how much of one exists. For these reasons, in his mind, there is no circumstance where his family (especially not his parents) would take precedence of his own happiness or Victorâs. That is why it confuses/hurts/angers him that Victor doesnât stand up to Isabel, because if the roles were reversed, he would have no problem at all telling his own mother (or father) off. He doesnât seem to comprehend Victorâs need to keep his relationship with his mother intact. Iâm very glad Isabel pointed out to him that Victor has stood up to her and risked their relationship for him, but the disconnect still lies in that Benji isnât a fan of the fact that he didn'tâ do that in his presence and that he didnât do more.
Then thereâs Derek. Derek is at least a sophomore in college in season 2 as he was clearly in college in season 1 as well. Meaning he is at least 19/20 when Benji is 16/17. They had been together for a year the previous spring (episode 1x6) which means they started dating when Benji was 15 and Derek was no younger than 18 (I think he is like at least a year older than the youngest possibility). Georgiaâs age of consent is 16, and there are no âRomeo and Julietâ laws in place in the state meaning it is categorically illegal for anyone 18 years of age or older to engage in sexual acts with anyone 15 years of age or younger unless they are legally wed, meaning until Benjiâs 16th birthday, this relationship was illegal in general not to mention the predatory nature of someone in college dating a high school sophomore to begin with. They generally donât prosecute if the people involved are within 4 years of each other though (which coincides with âRomeo and Julietâ laws in other states) which they couldâve been within depending on Derekâs actual age and birthday. It doesnât seem like charges were filed either way which is questionable on Benjiâs parents part. Benji also tells Victor in 1x10 that Derek made him feel bad a lot of the time about the things he like and about being a romantic, we also see Derek crap all over Benjiâs special anniversary date in 1x6. The toxicity of that relationship is sure to have left itâs mark on Benji and carried over into his new relationship with Victor. I also find it questionable that knowing that, Benji was shitting all over Victorâs love for basketball at one point (isnât that exactly what he complained about Derek doing to him about his interests?), though as you see in my earlier comments, I do understand that perhaps Benji wasn'tâ fully aware that Victor actually liked basketball and wasnât just doing it to seem straight/make his dad happy/etc. I also think itâs quite confusing that Victor managed to come up with that date idea for Benji in 1x6 and then the best he could do for Benjiâs birthday was champagne and sex? Iâd be more than marginally hurt over that if I was Benji, to be completely fair. It is also worth it to note that Benji stayed with Derek for over a year despite all of their problems (which goes back to the possibility of co-dependency issues) and yet he was willing to break up with him just to chase after the possibility of Victor. They had already connected on so many levels even prior to that night that even the possibility of that relationship made Benji willing to leave someone heâd been with for more than a year (obviously Victorâs little speech in the hallway played a part in that).
Benjiâs Priorities:
In Benjiâs world, he has a few things that could be considered priorities.
Maintaining his sobriety is obviously one, but he keeps that separate from everything else. I donât see it being held above or below anyone or anything. Itâs just a completely separate thing to him (which again I feel he needs to reconcile). He was able to do that while also appeasing his friends and Victor (see episode 2x4 where he switches out his cups).
His music/band is obviously a priority, but again thatâs something basic that everyone knows about and accepts. He doesnât have choose between that and anything or anyone else that weâre shown.
Victor is his primary priority however. To him, that is the most important relationship/person in his life. He doesnât know what heâd do without him. He says he loves that part of his life which I take to mean, he loves who he is when theyâre together and not so much when theyâre apart. To him, there is no question of who he would choose if there was a choice in front of him between Victor and literally anyone else (including his parents). That is why it confuses/hurts/angers him when the choice isnât so simple for Victor when he actually has to make one between Benji and Isabel. Benji isnât close with his parents and he doesnât seem to understand what it is like for someone that is. Even if his parents didnât come around right away. Even if they still may not be fully on board with everything, it didn'tâ matter that much to him, because he could stand up to them because he didnât care about destroying a relationship, because there already wasnât much of one to begin with. This leads to him not understanding that Victor is seriously conflicted in the moments where he is made to choose between his boyfriend and his mother, because to Benji that choice is crystal clear. Again, they could really do with an honest conversation about this where Benji actually listens and tries to understand where Victorâs coming from, because right now, I think he just doesnât quite get it. Itâs clear that Isabelâs speech at Brasstown helped him to understand or at least start to, and obviously now that Isabel isnât so much of an obstacle everything becomes a little easier, but it is still something that I really feel they need to discuss and understand about each other.
In conclusion:
Both of these boys need therapy (individual, family, and couples), and they would really benefit from a lot more open and honest communication where they both are able to speak honestly about their needs and desires as well as both being able to listen to and understand (or try to at least) one another.

hermit!Tommy au keeps living rent free in my brain and i need to get it out to write my other stuff. writing sort of helps but itâs also letting other aus in!
like in this iâm also using triplet au and some avian race stuff plus one au thing iâm adding because i like it!
send help, i donât know enough about dream smp to write it well but iâm writing anyway and maybe itâs good but i have Anxietyâ˘.
uh, anyway, part one of this new idea, if you have any idea who would help dream get tommy back like this, tell me cause otherwise iâm only using tubbo techno and dream cause iâm not sure who would realistically join.
oh yeah and @petrichormeraki for making the hermit!tommy au and i think also the triplet au? and then also @strawberrylemonz because i didnât realize they had more chapters of their one fic and i binge read all of memories in the stars so now Grian and Tommy are brothers in this fic.
Dream smiled wildly under his mask as he stared at the portal that stood in front of him. It was no nether portal, the only resemblance being the purple color between the blocks of the frame. Said blocks were eight pure diamond blocks making an almost five by three shape. It had taken months to learn of the design and get it to work properly, but here it was. Known only as the infinity portal, Dream knew this was just what he was after.
A few other players stood near him, having assisted in the creation of the portal at Dreamâs demands and threats. It had started when Tommy disappeared. When everyone realized, there were a range of emotions, but almost everyone knew that there would be no way to find Tommy. They hadnât noticed for who knows how long after he left, leaving no trail. Dream was the only one who thought there might be a way to find his lost âfriendâ. And that idea became real when at a MCC tournament with Tubbo, the compass the boy always wore stopped spinning once again. And even then, learning that had been chance when in the middle of a game the normally hidden item had come loose.
Dream never saw Tommy so he assumed that he was simply in the crowd and not participating, which made it harder to pin him down, but with the return portals going group by group, it was easy to see the compass stop tracking Tommy after the Hermitcraft group left.
The initial knowledge left Dream shocked and even doubting a return of Tommy. That place was known as a very well protected place. It was likely that Tommyâs arrival caused those that resided in Hermittown would have their admin making things harder to bypass. And at the same time, someone who could get through like Tommy did, even by chance, would likely be heavily monitored. Itâs just how Dream would do it.
But not wanting to give up, Dream researched into these people and learned how the Hermits would open their gates briefly before moving on. Based on previous patterns, there was no way Dream would wait months and months before that happened again, but some knowledge has seeped over from the previous event.
Some of the Hermits had found a way to create something called the infinity portal, and immediately Dream knew that would be his way to Tommy. If anything were to get past the Hermitâs protection, it would be something of their own design.
And now here it was, his very own Infinity portal. He had even used his admin powers to give it a little upgrade. A duplicate of Tubboâs compass was placed into one of the blocks making up the frame. It was slightly dented and scorched from previous attempts and was currently sparking dangerously, but it was all holding.Â
Now, speaking of Tubbo, the boy was just to Dreamâs right. He grabbed Tubbo a little harshly and pulled him forward. âSee, it finally works!â Dream spoke, his voice edging complete madness. âAnd Iâm sure it wouldnât have without that little trinket of yours, so why donât you have the honors Tubbo?â
Normally Dream wouldnât want to give anyone else the chance to get to Tommy before him, but he was smart and knew how to survive. While the portal looked stable and working for the most part, the sparks from the compass told another story. He could go in first and potentially die, or he could use a test dummy.Â
Tubbo was too eager to see Tommy once again and didnât see any problem with going first. He stepped onto the portal and barely gave a second thought about Dreamâs Request to come back once he was through to say where exactly they landed. He watched as the world around him warped and turned purple, just as with a nether portal, but the bright white flash that followed was different.
The first thing Tubbo saw was a large turquoise building, but to see it better, he took a step out of the portal and fell into the water a few blocks below. He looked back up at the portal and then at the ocean floor before using the blocks he had on him to build back up to the portal. As he did so, he could feel his communicator buzzing madly. Tubbo finally looked at the thing once he reached the portal again and made a small platform around it.

<Tango> Not me
<Grian> Might be Tommy, heâs the only one afk right now

Tubbo stared at the communicator, there were more messages, but only the first few mattered to him, specifically the message with Tommyâs name in it. He couldnât be completely sure that it was his friend though, but before he could look at the list of other users, two new messages came in.
<TommyInnit> Guys, please just let me have this one, itâs really important.
<TommyInnit> Tubbo how the fuck
Tubbo couldnât help but tear up at the message. He started typing back, sure his message was coming out poorly due to the tears messing with his already impared vision, but there was a ping as his message was sent before he walked through the portal again.

Tommy had finished afking near Mumboâs industrial district, having turned off his communicator so he could just sit and watch the machines go. As he turned everything off again, he unmuted the device just to have a flood of messages show up. He scrolled up until a yellow one caught his eye.
Tubbo_ joined the server
Tubbo. His Tubbo. How was he here? Tommy had to know, and even if the other Hermits would get upset at his language, it was all he could think of right now. He sent a message, hoping Tubbo would see it and that this wasnât all some huge mistake. After the messages were sent, he stared at the communicator until another message was sent. Seeing Tubboâs name in a message made his heart soar, but it immediately seemed to stop as he actually read the response.
<Tubbo_> Dreamâs been trying to find a way to you for months and he finally did it! Iâm going to be right back with him and the others!
Tubbo_ left the server.
Tubbo was one thing but Dream was another. Tommy could feel himself trembling. He had found a way in. Tommyâs worst fears were coming true. But then another message came in.
<Grian> Alright, guess Iâm breaking out the axe again
<Stressmonster101> Iâm already headed to my brewing area.
<xisumavoid> Looks like they used an infinity portal.
<Docm77> I have nothing to do with it
Tommy managed to smile just a little at how quick everyone was jumping into action at the mention of his own admin. As more Hermits chimed in, Tommy sent his own message.
<TommyInnit> Dream is the real threat. I donât think Tubbo would be helping if he knew the full story or is being threatened or something. Iâm not sure who else will come, but just maim and capture anyone besides those two unless I say otherwise.

After what seemed like an eternity, Tubbo stepped back through the portal. He was dripping wet but had a huge smile on his face and Dream knew Tommy had to be on the other side.
âHeâs there! Heâs really there!â Tubbo was practically bouncing around.
âYouâre wet.â Came the deadpan tone of Technoâs voice as he stepped closer, now knowing the portal was working.
âYeah, it sort of spawned over an ocean but I made a platform and everything.â
âGood job Tubbo.â Dream spoke before anyone else could. âNow we can go help free Tommy from wherever these people have trapped him and bring him home.â
âWell, when I showed up, Tommy was able to use a communicator which is how I know heâs really there, so maybe he isnât trapped and need rescuing?â Tubbo asked meekly.
âIf that were true, wouldnât he have come back Tubbo? If not for all of us, if not for his home, why didnât he come back for you?â
Tubbo didnât respond and Dream pushed past him to be right in front of the portal. He turned around to face the others he had collected there and pulled out his axe. âWe donât know what all will be there to âgreetâ us once we go looking, so better to arm yourselves now. And the sooner we go through, the better.â And with that, he stepped into the portal.
When he reached the other side, his communicator immediately started buzzing. With no one in sight, Dream pulled it out to read what these Hermits were getting up to. He couldnât help but laugh at the messages coming in. It seemed that they were torturing Tommy or something. This would be easy. Behind him, more people from the SMP came through the portal. They had weapons at the ready and even looked a little disappointed at the lack of a battle on the other side.
Dream pointed out the two landmarks that were best visible, a large turquoise tower and an island littered with buildings. While the tower was closer, Techno pointed out the building was made of warped wood, so it would be tough to deal with. The island on the other hand, it was so full with buildings that obviously plenty of these Hermits had to be living there. It was surprising it didnât look like more of a mess.
Tubbo was the only one to notice a small island with a single chest on it. After close inspection, the chest was in no way trapped and Dream laughed when he saw it was filled with boats. âItâs like theyâre asking us to attack them!â
After placing down a number of boats, Dream and the rest of his group rowed towards the island. A few people stayed out of the boats and swam in the water. While they werenât as fast, it was better than having everyone vulnerable as they rowed.
They had nearly reached the island when there was the distinct sound of a firework being fired. Techno was the first to jump out his boat, looking for the source, but as the seconds went on, there was no explosion. Instead, another firework went off and a shadow passed over the boats.
Looking up, the group saw a figure with giant wings, a trail of smoke behind them. Techno fired his crossbow at them, but the flier swerved out of the way before diving at the group. Boats moved to get out of the flight path, but Dream stood in place and readied his axe. As the figure grew closer, he smiled. Perfect height, red shirt, blonde hair. That was Tommy. âTommy, glad to see you. Itâs been ag-â Dream was cut off and stopped smiling as an axe blade hit him just as Tommy passed him.Â
He was about to speak again when there was a laugh. One that sent shivers down his spine. Dream looked around, but the source could only be from the one flying around him. That wasnât Tommy. âA-Attack the imposter!â He managed to get out, pushing down his fear. There was only one person with that laugh. The dreamslayer.
As Grian swooped down for another attack, a yell from the nearby shore stopped everyone in their tracks, even making Grian slow down as it was someone yelling at him. âGrian! Get back here and give us a chance to be diplomatic about this!â Looking towards the island ahead, Dream could see a figure standing at the shore which the avian now flew towards before landing. Someone aligned with Grian was potentially dangerous as well, but Dream has an army while this new person wanted a peaceful option.
Still, it was an opportunity to get closer safely, so Dream obliged, having Techno follow him. The warrior begrudgingly agreed, this was for his brother after all. He hopped out of his boat and climbed into the back of the one Dream was rowing. Within a few moments they had reached the shore and Techno growled slightly at the sight of this new person. They seemed to have an attempted copy of Tommyâs face as a mask. The one Dream mistook for Tommy wore an identical mask.Â
âHello there. Iâm Scar, mayor of Hermitcraft. Iâm sure youâre here for Tommy, but Iâm afraid he does not want to return with you, and we donât have that many slots available for new comers at the moment.â
Techno crossed his arms at this âmayorâ while Dream let out a curt laugh. âIâm sure thatâs what you think, but Tommy is one of us. He has to come back. Especially since staying here leaves his family behind.â Dream gestured to Techno.
âHey, if they fill out the right paperwork and what not,â Grian started, Scar attempting to interject that he would have to be filling out the paperwork too before being shushed. âThe rest of the family can come live here. Isnât that right Techno?â
Techno barely gave any reaction and Grian shrugged his shoulders. âOkay, I get it. Havenât seen you in who knows how long. Itâs fine.â
Dream glanced over towards Techno. âYou know Grian?â Techno replied with a no at the same time Grian replied with a yes. âEither way, that doesnât matter. Tommy is coming with us.â And Dream swung his axe. Grian quickly intercepted it, but thatâs why he had brought backup. Techno used the gap Grian had left and used his own axe on Scar. It only took a single hit as the mayor had come without any armor. In fact, the only things that fell to the ground were two masks, one of Tommy and the other of Scar.Â
As Scar was killed, everyoneâs communicator buzzed. Dream smiled, now it was a two on one, something this dreamslayer couldnât possibly win against. But his smile fell as Grian gave a smile of his own. âYou know we were giving you a chance. But now everyone knows whatâs going on.â
Dream gave a nod and Techno lifted Grian by his shirt. In his other hand he held his axe which was now being positioned over the parrot wings Grian sported. That made the avian flinch which Dream was glad of, but before the axe could fall, there was the sound of plenty of fireworks going off and then the sky was filled with other hermits, all equipped with elytra.

Diversmagazin Interview  Translation
Diversmagazin released an interview with director Sarah BlaĂkiewitz and Head-Writer Jasmina Wesolowski today. Read it here in German.
Jasmina (she/her), DRUCK writer since season four and head writer since season six together with Jonas Lindt. In a writers Room with Paulina Lorenz and Raquel Kishori Dukpa (JĂźnglinge)

Iâm leaving out the general introductory questions.
Alicia: Can you talk about the writing process? And whatâs the most important thing for you while writing and telling stories?
Jasmina: We especially wanted the profound exchange with young adults who represent our protagonists. For season six we had the challenge that we wanted to tell the lovestory of a Gambian-German girl and a Vietnamese-German girl, perspectives that arenât represented in the writerâs room. Thatâs why we talked a lot to research partners, to make up for our lack of knowledge/ experience, but we also talked to the actors and actresses.
Alicia: Why do different directors work on DRUCK?
Sarah: We try to produce as much in real-time as possible. And of course, we have to pre-produce but still have to work [overlappingly]. While one director is already in the editing phase, the next one already starts to shoot. Another reason is of course, that this way, also in the writerâs room, thereâs more space for diversity.
 Alicia: Itâs similar to the writerâs room. Youâre also dividing the writing of scenes between different people. ⌠Are you working together with racism and LGBTQIA+ experts?
Jasmina: I think we all have blind spots and that itâs absolutely impossible to end up with a perfect result. It was an important first step, that the JĂźnglinge collective joined. They are big advocates for queer BIPoc representation in German media. They were always present for feedback loops and made all of us, crew, actors and actresses, participate in an anti-racism workshop. We were lucky to have the brilliant author and anti-racism trainer Arpana Berndt, who advised us on these topics. On top of that, we did a lot of research on different topics. I think now it should be the only way to produce movies and shows this way, with an intensive research phase. This way you donât appropriate the stories of others and also donât tell inauthentic stories or, in the worst case, use hurtful clichĂŠs/stereotypes. It was helpful and needed that Black perspectives were present also behind the camera â Sara as a director, but also in the social media team, make-up department or costume design. But we are also aware that more can be done.
Sarah: Itâs important to me to highlight the make-up and costume design department. When I, an afro-German person, joined this project and met other afro-German women in those departments, who can relate to me, the character of Fatou and Ava, I was really glad. I can say from many years of experience that thatâs not a given.
 Alicia: How about experts on LGBTQIA+ issues?
Jasmina: To talk a bit about the process: We were set on Fatou being a lesbian pretty early on, and that was already discussed in the earlier writerâs room, where that perspective wasnât present yet. In the beginning, those were loose ideas, and we had to implement them with the casting. The casting team Raquel Kishori Dupka, Melek Yaparak and Angelika Buschina worked closely with the directors and contacted different institutions and specifically asked for actors and actresses who could be queer. At this age this is of course a super sensitive topic. You donât want to force young people to [define themselves/come out]. Itâs a huge challenge to handle that with care and it was extremely important that the JĂźnglinge collective was part of the casting process.
But also, apart from the casting process, we profited a lot from the queer people in the writerâs room in the cast.
Sarah: For my part I asked the authors and queer people âWhat would you like? What is nice? What hurts? Whatâs important? Or what have I never seen before?â And then I put those different experiences into the different scenes. On top you of course need common sense (?) to portray something that you havenât experienced yourself.
 Jasmin: I just thought of a small really beautiful example: How Fatou was given these rainbow socks as a Christmas present. You immediately notice, that was the idea of a queer person who knows what non-queer parents give to their kids as gifts. The fans notice: Queer people were in the writerâs room. Or âAh, these actresses know, what theyâre doing.â And those are the small things that make a difference.
 Alicia: For sure! In DRUCK you notice that queer people were part of this in really subtle ways, and that [resulted] in really nice fan-moments. I can confirm that.
Right now, the community is discussing the conflict between Mailin and Ava a lot. What role does that conflict play for you and what does it teach us?
 Sarah: Iâm editing the last episodes right now, so I really feel it, also because you already see the reactions online.
For me, the conflict is important because it shows over a long period of time, that not everything is always only good or only bad. That it takes a lot of time, patience and confrontation to understand all nuances of that kind of conflict.
That Ava could be prevented to outright say whatâs bothering her, because weâre talking about a really serious trauma of exclusion. How do you even tell people really personal stuff when you were bullied for years? And now we have that conflict, that seemingly takes forever, and youâre always asking yourself: âWhy arenât they talking to each other?â But itâs only in real time that you realize how hurtful this conflict is. How hurtful it is what they experience. What racism means, and also what it means to [deal] with that topic as a white  German girl. And I think itâs really important that everyone is going through that with this season. That takes time and sometimes hurts. And you donât always understand Ava and you donât always understand Mailin. When we really [dedicate ourselves to understand this conflict] then I think, we can experience what for example a person like me experienced their whole adolescence. Iâm not saying I was bullied my whole adolescence, and maybe it wasnât because of the color of my skin, but because of something else. But that went on for half a year. After being bullied in school for half a year youâre not up for school and your classmates anymore. And you donât talk to them anymore. And if people realize that because of this season then Iâm glad. I think itâs really touching that this conflict takes up so much space.
 Jasmina: I found it really interesting what you said about the nuances, because it was a real process for me to learn how many facets this conflict has. And especially that us white people, who grow up in a society with structural racism, have a particular idea about what racism means. And thatâs not a detailed and uncritical perspective of that topic: As soon as you call me racist, I feel attacked and start defending myself.
The role that this conflict played for us was to show how incredibly exhausting it is as a Person of Color, to always have to deal with these problems and that thereâs a kind of fatigue, that you donât want to talk (or should want to talk) about certain topics anymore, especially if you have other things going on in your life on top of it.
On the other hand, we have Mailin, who has a strong desire to understand. Sheâs not aware of her privileges as a white girl. We want to take this journey together, when she starts to realize things and when she goes through different stages; until she understands, what it is really about. We also have an arc there that isnât finished. Because in real life, you have to deal with some topics over and over again. We think itâs especially important to show that itâs not the job of Black people to explain racism to their white  friends. By now, they have all the resources to educate themselves and to talk with other white people about this topic, to unburden Black people.
 Alicia: Thatâs really interesting! The lovestory of Kieu My and Fatou is an important part of season six, which many queer young adults love. How is the relationship between Fatou and Kieu My representative for a generation?
Sarah: I can actually also see it in an older generation. When I send the cuddle clip of Kieu My and Fatou to my grandpa, he says âWow, how amazing that a Viet-German and a Afro-German girl are lying in bed together, talk in German and are in a relationship.â This generation hopefully isnât alone anymore, for example in the sense of: being the only Afro-German person in a small city. That changed and now we see it in that second and third generation. And thatâs why it shows me something very real and beautiful.
 Alicia: Which scene are you really proud of and why?
Sarah: My favorite scene, and one Iâm really proud of and that was really important concerning the pressure of school, was with the main character Fatou. Itâs about a path of finding yourself from Fatou and a [Reinigungsmoment] with her brother. Two people, who know each other from the moment of their birth, are sitting together. When I read that scene I thought yes, I can relate, I can feel that, and when we shot that, a world opened for me. And that was partly because of the music, which was decided before we shot this scene. Then we shot it and it was fucking cold, but we shot it again and again but every time we really felt it like the first time. And when I now watch that scene while editing, it really is the perfect moment. Every facial expression is perfect, every reaction. And thatâs that kind of truthful (?) moment youâre looking for as an actor, actress, director or author. When everything fits.

 Alicia: When can we expect the next season and what will it be about?
Jasmina: For now, DRUCK is finished and we have to wait how it will continue. Fingers are crossed and of course weâre hoping for a new season.

Bânei mitzvah in spaceship without Jewish community | Jewish character celebrating Christmas
Hi! Thank you so much for running this blog. I appreciate how much time and effort all the mods have put into it. I finished reading through the whole Jewish tag a few days ago, and Iâve learned so much! Iâm writing a Voltron fic (I *know* lol) and decided to make one of the protagonists a white nonbinary Ashkenazi Reform Jewish girl. Her astronaut brother mysteriously disappears in space and is presumed dead, so she runs away from home a couple of months before her b'nei mitzvah to find him. Now, sheâs in a group of rebels in space fighting against an Empire. I have two concerns:
1. Everyone on the ship misses home, so part of the way they cope is through getting in touch with their cultures. Theyâre gonna celebrate (a mostly non-Americanized) Christmas because it matters a lot to some of the characters for non-religious reasons. To what extent can my Jewish character participate in the celebration without it being weird? I want her to enjoy herself more because sheâs with her friends than because Jesus etc. Theyâll also celebrate Chanukah, if that helps. I know Chanukah isnât a major holiday, so I also want to have her celebrate a more significant one like Rosh Hashanah and/or Purim with them. Is it okay for gentiles to participate in those holiday celebrations, or should she do that alone?
2. Throughout most of the story, sheâll struggle with choosing whether to prioritize fighting the Empire or finding her brother and bringing him home. When she eventually does find her brother (who also turns out to be a rebel), he lets her decide whether they stay or go home. I thought it would be nice if she decided to stay and keep fighting for the greater good after she finally has her b'nei mitzvah. Her friends and other experiences are also a big part of why she decides to stay, but the b'nei mitzvah would be what gives her the final push she needs to decide. I donât know if it would be okay for me to write the ceremony itself or if she can even have one if only two of the eight people on the ship are Jewish. I read that not everyone has a b'nei mitzvah and that itâs not required, but I feel like itâd be a big deal to her character. Should I keep the b'nei mitzvah idea, or am I heading towards appropriative territory here?
I want to make her Jewishness a big part of her characterâs growth, and I really want to make sure I do it respectfully and accurately. I plan on finding a sensitivity reader when Iâve made more progress with actually writing everything out. Thank you for any insight you might offer!
It feels off to me to join a community symbolically when youâre far away FROM the community. Why not just have had her already have done the ceremony before she has all these adventures? That way it could just be a straightforward story about a Jewish teen having exciting heroic adventures in space, rather than a story about what happens when you have to miss aspects of Jewish life because youâre in space. It would also make the ââŚ.well, I guess Iâm around for Christmasâ bit less weighted because then that would be the only one of those instead of having two of those.

Iâll cover some other territory here. For those who donât know, b'nei mitzvah is something you just automatically become at the correct age, the ceremony is simply to celebrate that with the community. Not all people have the ceremony, but if you are Jewish, and of age (for religious purposes), your status changes with or without it. Personally, Iâm comfortable with showing a Jewish character finding a way to have a Jewish celebration when the circumstances are less than ideal, for me the other aspects of the story are more troubling.Â
On the subject of having a Jewish character celebrate Christmas with their friendsâŚÂ look I donât like this trope. There are many Jewish people, who are completely secular, who donât celebrate Christmas, because it is explicitly a Christian holiday, and secular Jewish people are still Jewish. Some Jewish people (secular or otherwise) do choose to celebrate other holidays, and I am very comfortable with those folks telling their own stories. What Iâm not happy with is the push from outside of the community for every Jewish character to slide into assimilation.Â
Some Jewish people will go to Christmas parties and not eat the food, because they keep kosher, or wonât stay for a tree-lighting, because that feels like it goes too far, or will give presents but not receive them. There are a huge number of ways we might handle Christmas, and I appreciate that you plan to show holidays other than just Chanukah (and yes, itâs fine for non-Jewish characters to join her in her holidays, if she invites them), but I always question why a non-Jewish writer is so keen to show Jewish characters celebrating Christmas. The most generous version of me wants to assume that you get so much out of Christmas that you want to share it, but the part of me that knows about the pressures to assimilate, and the history of increased antisemitic violence around Christmas thinks⌠just leave this kid alone. She missed her celebration, sheâs far from her community, and now she has to go put on a Happy Assimilated Smile for the culturally Christian folks around her. From a nonbinary Jewish perspective, itâs a little unusual for your nonbinary character to use she/her pronouns, and use b'nei mitzvah as a gender neutral alternative to the gendered bat mitzvah. In secular life, at least in the US, itâs not uncommon for people to use multiple pronouns, but I havenât met, or even heard of, a single person using gendered pronouns secularly, and using new neutral alternatives religiously. It absolutely could happen but, because it is so unusual, to me it reads as either invalidating the characterâs gender, or tokenizing her in the religious sphere.Â

Shira, I think thatâs a really good idea to make the character post-b'nei mitzvah. That way you just have a Jewish character having adventures rather than her culture being The Conflict. (And also, a pre-b'nei mitzvah seems a bit young for this storyline? Can she really consent to fighting alongside the rebels? Do they habitually take unaccompanied children on their ship? To me a teenager would make more sense, but hey itâs not my story!)
Dierdra, your answer regarding the Christmas aspect was awesome and really thorough. Thanks for your thoughts on the pronouns as well, it also jarred with me but I was waiting to hear your opinion as you have lived experience. My worry is if you use gender neutral terms for one but not the other, you risk falling into to the stereotype that only marginalised religious folks have to change our language etc to be inclusive to LGBTQ+ people, but everyone else is fine.Â
I wanted to come back to the point about Rosh Hashana. First of all, thank you for acknowledging that we have holidays that are more important than Chanukah! Sooo many OPâs donât know that. In terms of how she would celebrate it, I agree itâs fine to invite non-Jewish people along. However, given how community-based Jewish life is, making her keep Yom Tov on her own feels a bit like a torture story, especially when others have people to celebrate Christmas with. I wonder if youâve thought about giving her a Jewish friend on the ship? Especially if you want her Jewishness to be part of her growth as you mentioned, an older Jewish friend and mentor could be a huge help :)

As you can see, we have a wide range of possibilities for âwhat happens when you ask a Jewish person about celebrating Christmas.â I didnât mind hanging around it as an outsider myself until a certain subset of Christians started being mean-spirited about it in the news plus some personal trauma that time of year, as long as everyone involved was clear that I was just participating from the outside and this didnât somehow change me. (If I may make an analogy: compare it to going to a baby shower when you want to support your friend or family member but also really donât want kids of your own. Youâre going to have a whole different experience if your decision is respected vs. if all the other guests treat you like you being there means youâll change your mind about not wanting kids.)
That being said, itâs still all over the map. Some people IRL are okay even going to mass with their partnerâs Catholic family (without participating in communion obvs.) Some would never, ever do that and are sitting here with shocked faces that I even typed that. But what becomes important is the way itâs written. Sitting around listening to the Christmas story is probably a bad fit for your fanfic, but helping other people bake Christmas cookies or put ornaments on a tree could work. The ornament thing could remind her of decorating a sukkah, and she could point that out to the others.Â

I have literally never in my life felt jealous of the kids who âgot to do Santaâ (for example) and while Iâm sure some kids were and theyâre valid too, I think itâs important to show that itâs not a universal phenomenon.

It was very fun reading all your comments and theories. Though side note: animal anon has no problem with people joining her BUT it must be animals and it must not mess with my countdown. No statues! Anyway, GUESS WHAT TODAY IS!!! đđđđđ It's been one year since I started animal anon! How exciting is that?! Phew, what a year we've had together! I mean what better way to start this second year than some chaos since that's how animal anon started to begin with! I will admit, it was slightly stressful coming up with something to meet the occasion of this event. I hope the countdown and this post live up to it. No, I'm not going to reveal myself just yet.. maybe that will be for year 2...đđ. BUT I will give you some fun facts about me! So let's see; first, I'm from the Midwest (so not Canadian, but close so I do have a slight accent), but I currently live in the TriState area. Second, I am a MASSIVE theater nerd. No, seriously I have been to 21 shows since Broadway reopened in September and I'm actually going to my 22nd tonight. I don't know if this makes that fact better or worse, but I've really only been to about 12 different show because out of those 22, 10 of those are one specific show. Third, I am fluent in German and English. Though, I suck at writing in German, I never learned how to, so don't ask me to do that please. Fourth, my favorite color is red, so you can guess my favorite Taylor album (and coincidently also the show I've been to see 10 times on Broadway...). Fifth, I love to talk A LOT if you couldn't tell by the essays I send yall. And lastly, I can also confirm I am not Taylor...but I will say that I do share something very important with her... tell me your guesses down below as to what very important thing you think Taylor and I have in common, and I'll send some extra animals to whomever I see gets it right first!
So contuining on with my dissertation here, this week I have been trying to figure out a prompt to live up to this occasion. As I already mentioned, my system isn't perfect! And I've been thinking a lot about community lately and how that's been lacking for so many because of Covid. Woo Do Hwan: Interview with Kankoku TV Drama vol. 97 (Aug 2020)

Sword, bow, and horseback riding for the first time
A âMonstrous Newcomerâ in a career-making, historical drama debut
In 2016, in the movie âMasterâ, Woo Do Hwan played the role of Lee Byung Hyunâs subordinate. Even though he appeared onscreen for just three minutes, he left a strong impression, attracting attention. Since then, he starred in âSave Meâ (2017 OCN), taking on the nickname of âMonstrous Newcomerâ and setting out on a brilliant career path. The next step he takes will be his first historical drama âMy Countryâ (2019 JTBC).
Tackling a historical drama is an ideal chance for young and promising actors to grow; they have a rare chance to study in depth with multiple superb veteran actors over the long filming period. Woo Do Hwan did not miss this opportunity. His new work âThe King: Eternal Monarchâ (2020 SBS) leverages 120% of what he learned from âMy Countryâ, and his popularity is surging.
Struck by a midwinter waterfall, the most dreadful and frigid opportunity to showcase yourself
--What kind of work is âMy Countryâ?
WDH: Each of the characters clash with the others for the sake of their personal convictions. This drama depicts their love and friendships. The country they are each reaching for ⌠in a way, you could say they seek the same goal. Everyone wants a country in which they can live happily, but each person has a different path to that goal. This work skillfully depicts the conflicts that arise in the midst of this.
--Please introduce the role that you play.
WDH: Nam Seon-ho is an illegitimate child born to a family of nobles (yanban), and he has suffered greatly because of his birth. The poor guy is only able to relax his guard and laugh when he is with Seo Hwi (played by Yang Se Jong) and his younger sister Yeon (played by Jo Yi Hyun). However, even under such circumstances, he holds onto his ambitions. He doesnât want other people to experience the same kind of pain that he has endured, so he strives to become the right-hand man of Yi Seong-gye (played by Kim Young-cheol), the future founder and king of the Joseon Dynasty. However, it doesnât go as expected and I end up in opposition to Hwi, my dearest friend.
--What things did you pay attention to when creating the role?
WDH: Since itâs a period drama, it was difficult to get used to the way of speaking and tone of voice. It took me a while to get the hang of it. Now  I have the opposite problem, Iâm doing my best to shake off the historical tone (laughs).
--The gorgeous hairstyles and clothing were a sight to behold.
WDH: Honestly, at first I thought âLong hair probably wonât suit meâŚâ (laugh). So early on, I participated in many concept meetings and tried out different hairstyles. Even with long hair, there are many different hairstyles that can be made, such as wearing with armor or tying it up. I collaborated with the director to choose the most suitable style according to the situation in the drama. I was able to try on as many outfits as hairstyles, but I really enjoyed being able to wear the special costumes such as the armor and the inspectorâs garments; things we normally donât get the chance to wear.
--How did you practice horseback riding, swordsmanship, and archery?
WDH: Before filming started, I studied martial arts for about two months. Filming lasted nine months, so in total I was focused on this work for a whole year. While filming action, itâs important to skillfully capture the scene, but the most essential thing is to not to get hurt. For that reason, the cinematographer, my co-stars, and I always had to be in perfect sync. It took time to match movements for the sword fights.
--You became the topic of much discussion when you revealed your magnificent physique in a waterfall during the opening of the drama. What are your secrets for managing your fitness?
WDH: I train on a regular basis. If I only started working out when I knew there were going to be scenes with skin showing, itâd be stressful trying to build up my body in a short period of time for shooting. After all, I donât know when or where I will have to strip down for a scene! (laugh) Usually I play a lot of soccer, and Iâll go to the gym to train if I have time. If I take care of myself properly as a habit, then I donât need to worry if my body looks good or if I should put in more effort during acting; I can just concentrate on my performance.
--Was the directorâs reaction a good one?
WDH: He was extremely happy, hahaha. They keep trying to make me take my clothes off, so I was like, âCome on, give me a break!â The road to the filming location for the waterfall scene was rugged and steep and it was incredibly cold; it was the most difficult scene. Se-jong even said âI never want to go into water that cold againâ.
--A lot of viewers said that âNam Seon-ho is the most pitiful man in the world.â How do you personally feel?
WDH: I wanted to present Seon-ho as a tragic figure, so I was glad that the audience saw him the same way; it encouraged me to put in even more effort and I worked hard to build up his character. Seon-ho constantly stands on the boundary between life and death, living a life where he might die at any moment. He never manages to accomplish any of his dreams, and it is only at the very end that he realizes what is most precious to him. However, even though Seon-ho is a tragic character, if we just focused on the sadness the drama would be hard to watch and it wouldnât be interesting at all. Therefore I wanted to show many things with him, such as him being a powerful figure, and the loneliness his power hides.
He was able to finish the drama because he was with Se-jong, his co-star of the same age.
--At what points did you sympathize with Seon-ho?
WDH: There is always a conflict in Seon-hoâs life in that he always has to sacrifice something in order to get something he wants. Seon-hoâs situation is an extreme case, of course, but I think that in our lives there are many moments like his, even if they are small and trivial. Moments when we desire what we canât have, or throw away things we shouldnât throw away. There are also moments when we all have to give something up for the sake of a goal that we are reaching for. In the midst of that, I worried about the things that I should protect, so I deeply sympathized with Seon-ho, whose ideals and emotions were in conflict with each other.
--Your portrayal of the characterâs emotions was well-received. When was Seon-ho the most emotional?
WDH: It would be when he heard that Seo Hwi was alive. I had a deep rapport with Se-jong in all my scenes with him. From a certain point onwards, the events in the drama truly felt real, and I fell more and more in love with Se-jong (laugh). I deeply empathized with Seon-hoâs emotions, which made me want to perform even more intensely in this work.
--Concerning expressing emotions, are you the type to do a lot of preparation beforehand? Or are you the type to perform what you feel on the spot?
WDH: I think I am half-and-half. Beforehand, Iâll think, âSo weâre filming this kind of scene todayâ, why is this happening, and what was the situation before this scene? However, itâs difficult to continuously hold onto emotions because there are rehearsals and blocking out our positions with the director. So I will concentrate on creating the emotion in the moment when acting.
--And what about your mutually dependent relationship with Yang Se-jong, who played the role of Seo Hwi?
WDH: I believe it would have been very difficult if Se-jong hadnât been there. I relied on him a lot. The make-up room was set up in a large van onsite, and while our hair was being done, we would go over our lines. If one person said their lines, then the other person would just naturally respond with their own lines. We are the same age, not just in the drama but also in real life, so in both the Goryeo and modern eras, we were always communicating well, back and forth.
Se-jong always helped me, and even though we were together on location for very long periods of time, not once did we fight or have a conflict of opinion. We spent our time together as good friends, always being considerate of each other.
--There were many scenes of Seon-ho and Hwiâs friendship that brought out tears, but was there a particular scene where you especially felt the friendship between the two?
WDH: All those scenes where we rescued each other. Especially that scene in the latter half, where Hwi took Seon-ho out of Yi Bang-wonâs (played by Jang Hyuk) house; that was memorable. Then in the first half, during the massacre of the Liaodong Punitive Expedition advance party, thereâs a scene where we cross swords in the midst of combat and I recognize my dear friend Hwi. That scene was very good and had a big impact.
--What is your impression of Seolhyun (AOA) as Han Hee-jae?
WDH: Seolhyun was truly a âcelebrityâ to me (laugh). She is one of Koreaâs top idols; Iâve seen her movies. When I heard that she would be co-starring with me, I was very much looking forward to it. Once we were actually performing together, I was amazed that her acting was even better than I expected. Seolhyun was the youngest on location, but she had a very mature attitude during filming. In front of a large crowd of her seniors, she played a bold and strong woman. I was impressed.
--The antagonism between Seon-ho and his father was one of the highlights of the drama. How was it like to co-star with Ahn Nae-sang, who played the role of your father?
WDH: Ahn Nae-sang sunbae was like a real father, a very interesting person. Although heâd say âSeon-ho is an impertinent sonâ (laugh), he worked well with me, and did a lot for me. During breaks, he tells jokes and lightens the atmosphere on set, but once filming starts, his gaze radically changes and he becomes a terrifying father. Heâs not someone who hands out advice left and right to juniors, rather, he is a person who reacts kindly and looks after us.Â

--What are your thoughts on successfully wrapping up your first historical drama?
WDH: I wore hanbok, long wigs, and armor--I got to experience all of these things for the first time. Iâve also never done things like swordsmanship, archery, or horseback riding, so each one of those was a new challenge. Because I have never lived in that time period, I worried about how I should portray it. Despite that, I enjoyed everything. The remote locations that I visited were very beautiful, and during breaks it was a wonderful experience to enjoy the scenery and watch the seasons change instead of sitting in the dressing room. Iâve heard from my seniors that once youâve done one historical drama, youâll want to do another, and now I know what that feeling is like for myself.
--What was the most memorable location?
WDH: In the opening scenes, I often went to the countryside, but first I filmed the waterfall scene and the cliff scene. That cliff scene was absolutely terrifying. I scaled the cliff and did the action scene, but I thought...I might actually die if I fall (strained laugh).
--Watching the behind-the-scenes footage, you seem the quiet type but at the Japanese fanmeeting, I feel that you were skilled at speaking onstage. What is your actual personality?
WDH: Do I look like someone who doesnât say much? Iâm definitely not the talkative type, though. Hahaha. I talk a lot when Iâm with Se-jong, but the interesting thing is, how much Se-jong and I will say changes depending on the day. On some days Se-jong speaks more than I do, and on other days I wonât shut up (laugh).
--Since filming continued for about a year, was it difficult to break free from the role of Seon-ho?
WDH: Honestly, I wouldnât have thought about Seon-ho without todayâs interview. However, Seon-hoâs sword is in my living room, so whenever I see it, Iâm going to remember (laugh). But because I canât use historical speech in the drama that Iâm currently filming, I try to forget as much as possible.
--Currently youâre in the middle of filming the drama âThe Kingâ, right?
WDH: In âThe Kingâ, one person plays two different roles. The show depicts parallel worlds. In one world, Lee Min-ho sunbae plays the emperor and my character, Jo Yeong, has been by the emperorâs side since childhood and is the captain of the Royal Guard. In the other world, I am Jo Eun-seop, a social service worker whose personality is the complete opposite to Yeongâs. Iâm having a lot of fun filming this, so please look forward to it.
--What does âmy countryâ mean to you?
WDH: I believe itâs the people around me. I have family, I have friends, and I also have colleagues. A life where I can live happily with all of them, that is my dream country, I guess. No one goes on without desire, so I want to live together while caring for each other.
--Youâve been called the âMonstrous Newcomerâ. With this kind of recognition, do you feel pressured?
WDH: Iâm always under pressure. However, I tell myself I canât lose to it, I have to work harder to overcome it.
--Finally, a message to your Japanese fans.
WDH: 2020 was the year I definitely wanted to meet all my Japanese fans, but filming for âThe Kingâ started earlier than expected and hasnât finished yet. I was incredibly jealous when I heard that Se-jong held a Japanese fan meeting at the end of 2019. When âThe Kingâ finishes, I would like to meet you all. Until then, please take care of yourself and be happy. I will do my best to finish my work and greet you in good form. If you havenât seen âMy Countryâ yet, I definitely invite you to watch it. I also hope you look forward to âThe Kingâ.
