SKDFKSDKF OMFG my many many many bushmeds... yeas.. most of these are Mega works in progress but i think it's good to jot them down here so that i can revisit them when i work out character designs/ref sheets and whatnot! and these are just the ones off of the top of my head! @_@ i surely have more buried in my gf and i's server LOL. sooooo let's break it down really quick! My "Canon" medsnip: the medic and sniper in Thou Giveth Fever is just the Main/Default/Canon/Whatever medic and sniper. takes place in same universe right after the comics!

My gf and i's medsnip: arlowe and wren! a lot of their story takes place pre-teufort but they eventually become RED's medic and sniper! ^v^ "canon" red medic and sniper don't exist in this universe. they're already dating by the time they wind up at teufort together! we're still working on a lot of their backstories but i'll eventually talk more about them/write a fic for them too! ^u^

My vampire medsnip: tumblr Adores them.., yes.,., my vampire medic and hunter sniper! sniper's a vampire hunter who is hired by vampire medic to do some dirty work for him. they end up falling for each other... but not before spilling a lot of blood together!

have another version of them drafted where sniper's a herbalist and falls in love with a Big Mean Vampire who once used to love healing humans more than he loves harming them.. :'( they fall in love.,., show each other tenderness... HEHEHE..

My cult god medsnip: medic is a shapeshifting god/demon/spirit/whatever that thrives and grows in power from the cult that is convinced he exists and worships him. likes toying with them and giving them "signs" he exists and whatnot and loves the praise because, well, who wouldn't! :-) hoo! buuuut a Certain Denier has caught his eye...! sniper thinks that cult nonsense is a load of crap and doesn't fall for it. Naturally this makes medic Carnally Desire him and his attention... HEHE... >:)

My swamp monster medsnip: sniper is a werecroc that lives out in the comfy cozy australian bush/marshland (haven't decided yet). rough it as a human and also as a crocodile and loves being alone. until one day a very curious "Doctor" starts stomping around his secluded slice of heaven in search of/researching the plants and animals of the area (to harvest for his zany experiments of course!)... sniper hates people but this one just seems kind of... Charming... hmm.... !

My eldritch medsnip: MEGA work in progress. need to think about this more actually.,., Medic Is Not What He Says He Is and sniper has a hunch... ;-) medic has a "breath of life" ability which is ironic because the hurting is more rewarding than the healing! :'( HEHE. also have a cool idea for an eldritch sniper but idk if i'd want to fit them in Together or have separate aus!

My old retired domestic medsnip: would follow my "canon" medsnip. years and years later, some vague skip of time. the sorrow..,., the sweetness.,., in the Unlikely Event they retire... how might that go.. :) sniper's fine with aging but medic is NOT. everything can be defied! age! death! isn't that what you want sniper!! but maybe sniper wants to retire to some small house on the german coast with medic.,., medic can extend his life infinitely with his "devil deal" but what about his sniper.,., who has already died once... but could either of them Really ever retire...? HEHEH.., i've actually written a lot of this and i should probably publish it in a standalone fic. very emotional very angsty!!

My pony medsnip: EHE this is an extremely self indulgent one but i love it all the same! does what it says on the tin... what if they were ponies!! i've talked about it here and posted sniper's design here! i need to work on medic's just for the sake of having my own ref sheet to match sniper's but i talk about him in the twt thread i linked! ^u^ <3 i just love gushing about them because i love ponies!!

My demon medsnip: have a couple different versions of this General Concept buut the one i'll mention is a conspiracy theorist/total shut-in/sex-starved/supernatural sighter sniper summoning a demon medic... but instead of it being the kind of demon sniper was after (for whatever reason. havent figured it out yet), it turns out medic's a lust demon... Smirks

My merfolk medsnip: ONE I REALLY LOVE I JUST HAVENT GOTTEN AROUND TO FLESHING OUT YET GRAAHH... i love the idea of one being human and one being a merperson but i also love the idea of them both being merfolk... Do you have any thoughts on clown church/purpleblood religion it's my favorite aspect of homestuck and I always like seeing how other people interpret it. I mostly have been thinking about how it changes on earth C from alternia, but alternian clown church is also cool

Like I literally hate how its interpretted bc its literally taking a bunch voudo inspo and using ICP lingo and more inspo from another musical artist/band that my friend pointed out a while ago to me and I cant remember but MY GOD

A lot of the stuff they were using in the clown church religion really felt like they looked up small bits of vodou and used some stuff they already know and are probs more stereotypes then fact and demonized tf out of it RTYVGBUHJNKM GOD IM IN HATE

My thought process of clown religion is that we dont get much, and i do not believe its a not to be spoken of cult, That doenst really makes sense to me i guess bc these bitches are literally wearing their face paint out in the open, theres no fucking way tbh LOL. At most to me its literally a closed off religion in homestuck. Plus its literally normal to murder on Alternia too so like PLEASE??????

Ok NOW I am going to actually talk about how I see it and stop complaining about how its seen DERFTYGUHI

I see the the clown church as definitely something we dont get much talk about in the OG homestuck so ive basically written into it a LOT and I honestly dont really look at hiveswap or friendsim for refs bc these ppl are fucking making me crazy bc they kinda are TRYING to demonize Gamzee so they demonize the purples and the clown religion in general

Since we're reading the comic and if you think about it, we are reading this religion from an empire that is being manipulated by its dictator (The Condensce) and that dictator is also being manipulated somewhat by someone behind the scenes (Lord English). We already know that the religions messiahs are supposedly Lord English and Doc Scratch

But I dont even think thats the case!! Because The more I think about it, dont even think it makes much sense for them to be literal messiahs/gods bc it really feels like a goddamn joke bc neither of them can exist at all without the game!!

SO I specifically believe that Doc Scratch and/or Lord English had requested some kind of hierarchy and she manipulated the religion overtime and now Doc Scratch and/or Lord English are literally WORSHIPPED and then the whole warped version of the religion was impliemented so hard for so long that the religion cant be seen as anything else on Alternia other then a sacrifical cult that aims to deduce the lowblood population!!

Here are some things I have written for it before it became deduced that in the OG:

-The actual name of the clown church religion is called "The Dark Spiral"

-There are more messiahs and also gods that can be worshipped within the The Dark Spiral but the main ones are Mirth and Rage (Who are NOT Doc Scratch and/or Lord English)

-The Dark Spiral is a closed off religion (with exceptions after a long process)

-The Dark Spiral has many public units where they can give thanks/pray (That are basically temple type settings) but those are not the actual places of worship. The locations of the places of worship are unknown to anyone who arent followers of The Dark Spiral. There are specific passages/trails one must take and going any other way may kill them.

-Places of worship are large open spaces that are well hidden and are secluded. They can be either underground, in a LARGE SECLUDED areas away from civilization, or within caves or mountains

-Ritual sacrifices for either Mirth or Rage are usually large animals that are usually cared for and loved. Troll sacrifices for Mirth are minimal and only true followers that volunteer can be sacrifices. A person who is unwilling to be a sacrifice does not bring good luck from Mirth. A sacrifice specific for Rage is also minimal and usually a troll who commits a crime towards the The Dark Spiral or someone within The Dark Spiral who is believed to be truly despicable.

-Special Stardust is made of Lusus bones, A special mineral only known to Alternia (it shines like a rainbow and when grinded up for the stardust its definitely gives a glittery look), and ashes of loved ones (which can be anything not just trolls).

-Special Stardust is mixed into their face paint sometimes on special occasions like a festival or celebration of some kind having to do with the faith.

-Followers of The Dark Spiral pray with the tips of their fingers on their chin or cheeks with their face looking up with their eyes closed specifically when they are tanking the Messiahs or Gods that they may specifically worship within the faith. They pray like most when it's a general prayer of good luck. They also do very quick prayers of luck by honking their nose twice (similar to how some may form a cross on their chest)

-There are most definitely different branches of belief in The Dark Spiral but the main and most popular depiction of The Dark Spiral is the one I am talking about now.

And of course all of this might've been erased and warped thanks to The Condensce and other trolls who may have been dedicated to her or misguided followers. (Not saying canonically but saying that's literally what mightve happen with my specific interpretation of the clown church AKA The Dark Spiral)

Daniel (VLD Reboot)

Daniel is the newest member of my next-gen AU.^^ So to be clear, he is not a fan character. He does not belong to me. He is an actual canon character in the previous Voltron incarnation 'Voltron Force'. If you have never heard of Voltron Force before then I don't blame you. I don't know when it exactly came out but I know it was somewhere in the early to mid-2000s based on how the animation looked.XD I only got to like the third episode before I quit it because it was pretty boring. I'm probably biased because I love VLD (which is the newest Voltron series) and that was the first one I saw but still. I do admit though that I still love Lance from what I've seen in this series. No matter what he will always be my son. Also, there's a part in like the 2nd episode (I think it was the second episode) when Keith returns and Lance just looks at him with the most shit-eating grin and just immediately makes fun of Keith's mullet even when Lance in the scene before was almost killed. And when that scene happened my klance loving heart just went to the moon for a second. Until I remembered that Keith is married to Allura in that version... Oh well, a shipper can dream. Anyways, the reason that I decided to make a VLD version of Daniel was that I had watched a couple of Batman films where they introduced Batman's son, Damian Wayne, which then lead me to some Batfam comics with the Robins and I just got the urge to give Shiro and Keith their own little shit of younger brother that they have to look after and make sure doesn't do anything stupid. Just like how Dick has to handle Damian in the movies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Daniel Akagane Nickname(s): Danny Age: 15-16 (In this ref sheet and when he was taken in.) 36 (Present time of the AU) Species: Human-Galra Hybrid Gender: Male Nationality: Unknown Parents: Unknown, Krolia (Adoptive Mother) Siblings: Takashi Shirogane (Adoptive Brother), Keith Kogane (Adoptive Brother)      Backstory -  Daniel was abandoned by his parents when he was just a baby. Due to this happening he never had any idea of who they were or what they looked like, all they left him with was his first name and that was about it. He hadn't even known that he was a hybrid yet, he just thought he looked odd. He grew up in an orphanage for the first few years of his life where he was physically and verbally abused by both the caretakers and the other children. The reason why he was targeted for this harassment was due to him being a hybrid and not a full-blooded Galra, making him seem weaker and a waste of space. By the time he was 9, he decided he had enough and ran away from the orphanage leaving him all on his own. He spent the next few years stealing food from little shops and hiding from law enforcement. Even when the Blade took control over the Empire after the war ended his life wasn't that much different from when he first became homeless. That is until he turned 15 years old. He was going around his normal day, stealing supplies and food he needed for the week, only this time was completely different from his usual outings. Daniel has gotten a few close calls the few times he had to run away from an angry shopkeeper or a sentry but in all those years he was never caught. This time however the shopkeeper was able to outsmart Danny by not only cornering him in an alley but by also destablizing him with a quick claw to the leg so he couldn't get away. But before Danny could recieve his punishment for stealing he was saved by one of the Blade leaders, Krolia, by knocking the shopkeeper out. Krolia gasped in shock when she realized the boy she had just saved was a hybrid. A human-galra hybrid no less (just like her son). She told the other Blade members that had been acompanying her on the patrol to take the uncosious guy into questioning while she went to go talk to the boy. But to her suprise when she looked back Danny was gone. After questioning the infuriated shopkeeper Krolia had learned that the boy had a reputation for stealing food and other items from almost everyone in that area. Which confirmed her susspision that not only was he an orphan but that he was most likely homeless as well. Now being completely worried for the boy she decided to search for him and to keep a close eye on him. Finally finding him a few days later trying to do his usual routine of pickpocketing and getting his hands on any food he could. He was obviously trying to be more careful due to the injury he had gotten in their last encounter. She just lingers around in the background for a while. After the first week of Krolia doing Danny got fed up with and finally confronted her about it. She told him that she saw a lot of potential in him and said that a boy his age shouldn't be living the way he is. She finally gives the offer to him of staying instead with the Blades and training under her. After considering the pros of this Daniel accepts her offer and becomes apart of the Blade. After a month of training under her, Krolia grows quite fond of him. Danny has also gains some respect of the older Blade. After a while Krolia decides to official adopt Daniel as her own son and to also introduce him to her other son and step-son. Their introduction to each other was odd to say the least. When Krolia learns that Danny has never been to Earth before she thought it would be a great idea for him to stay there with Shiro and Keith to live more normal and quiet life for a while. Keith becomes the main caretaker of Daniel on Earth with Shiro checking in because in Shiro's words it's Keith's turn to look after an emotionaly unstable, emo teenager now. Extras - Skills/Weapons - Due to him having to steal everything he needs to survive and evading sentries he gained a lot of agility skills over time. During his time at the orphanage, the caretakers provided many lessons in combat and weaponry so they can make more soldiers for the Galra empire. So he was even able to use and to progress those skills while running away after stealing from other Galra for resources and being able to defend himself if need be. During one of his escapades, he found a pair of mounted claws, realizing they could be of use to him he took them as well and they are now his main weapon of use. Relationships - He has a strong bond with Krolia. Being that she was the woman who took him he has a lot of respect for her. He mostly calls her by her first name but there have been some that he called her mom by accident. She's basically the first person to become a mother to him. His relationship with Keith is rocky at first. You put two people together who have similar stubborn, hotheaded personalites they are definitely gonna clash with each other. With Keith trying to keep Daniel under control and thinking he's a brat and Daniel thinking Keith is too overbearing and not taking him seriously. But after a while the two start get closer and realize that they do have a lot in common and how to deal with each other's flaws. They bicker and make fun of the other but it's from a better place now. Daniel's relationship with Shiro is very different from his relationship with Keith. From the start Danny was kind of awkward with Shiro. He just didn't really know how to act around. I mean Shiro looked like a tired, kind old man who had been through some shit. He didn't really want to make that worse. Shiro would him some spacedad talks when he was frustrated with something or got angry. Danny gets less and less uncomfortable with him as time goes on and starts seeing him as someone he can depend on. As his relationships with his nephews and niece... he will literally murder anyone who even thinks about harming a hair on their head. Like a good uncle should. Fun fact - Shiro was actually the one to give Daniel his last name. He wanted all three of them to keep the theme of -gane in their last names so he suggested Akagane. Daniel couldn't really say no so he just went along with it. (Get it? Cause their names mean Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Well... Akagane technically means copper but... same thing right? I think.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's pretty much all I have on him for now. Willow is nice, but she gets very focused on her work and is often scatterbrained when working on a project. This leads to lots of tail-tripping, both hers and others. She likes plants but forgets to water them when she’s too focused on a project. She wants a pet bird, just a small one, that she can name sponge.

My hometown has had a long history of unicorns and pegasi working together. We make pottery and ceramics which are used mostly in Canterlot. I am proud to say that not only are we commissioned by several stores in that area, and other places around Equestria, but we also are commissioned by the royal palace. You would not BELIEVE how many ceramic roof tiles, floor tiles, and dish sets we have had to replace, it has been attacked so many times! I just don’t know how that place is still standing! Of course I don’t really understand a lot of things as I have never left my town. I think that I have gotten ahead of myself, my name is Willow Resin, and, at least according to my mom, I am something very special.

My town is the town of Basin Ridge. It has a long history of the ceramic arts, it is in the perfect location. The town is at the base of a cliff and the top of the cliff is a spring that comes from a clay base, the pegasi fly to the top of the cliff and push the clay slurry down one chute/streambed/river. It then falls to the town below, landing in the collection fields, where the clay and water separates. The different layers of clay that separate out are used for different things; the finer top layers are for the really fine china and porcelain, the next layers gong down are less fine, and get more coarse, those are used for more hoof-building projects, larger statues and such. Once the collection ponds have settled, the unicorns separate the layers and the pegasi help carry the contained clay to the proper areas. Then the real work begins.

Unicorns are the main ceramic artists here; they use their magic to form the clay, but I, I have a disadvantage. These are very specific, advanced spells. They are very involved, from spinning the wheel while pulling the clay, its too hard for me, my magic isn’t strong enough, and my wings aren’t strong enough to carry and help move the clay. I have a personal reason for wanting to be here too, my Father was the master of the head studio here. I have grown up playing between these wheels like the trees in a forest, I have spent my whole life in this art. I have adapted it and myself to be able to accomplish what I need to do.

I have to balance the clay, even it, smooth it and decorate it all by hoof, I can only do the pulling spell, I even have to kick the wheel myself. The other unicorns can do this really awesome spell that spins the wheel, and forms and decorates the clay ALL AT THE SAME TIME AND THEY CAN DO LIKE FIVE AT THE SAME TIME. Which is really nice when we have a new order of roof tiles, which aren’t done on the wheel, BUT STILL its really cool!!!  I can only do one at a time, but I make it the best that I can.

Extra Monologue:

             “Of all the pegasi that fly to the top of the clay cliffs, my father noticed my mother.

              “All the pegasi carry down the clay from the cliff every day, it is placed in the holding pond to sift it for quality of grain. All the unicorns in the workshop go and sort the clay and gather it, (its actually kind of a long process I won’t bore you with the details) there are several of these collection ponds, each pond is for a year and they rotate through them. Everyone gets their clay from these ponds. There are a few, usually the masters, who have smaller collection ponds, they take extra time to sift the clay and sort it. They can get very different colors of slip clay that way and make new works and patterns. My father was the master of the workshop, so of course he had his own collection ponds. He used these ponds as an excuse to talk to my mother, he convinced her to gather clay from specific places on the cliff and bring it only to him, this way he got to talk to her multiple times a day, instead of just once a day, when all the other pegasi came back. Eventually she figured out that he just wanted to talk to her.

               “My father was the master of the workshop for a very long time. He created many new designs and made many new spells just for decorating and forming the clay, these spells are still used today. I have been able to learn three of his paint-pattern spells, well they are the simple lest ones, as I am really not good at magic, but they are still very important to me, I consider those spells some of my greatest accomplishments. He died when I was little; I miss him every day, but I still wanted to get into the workshop he worked in. I barely passed the timed test, making a full piece in a day, BUT I DID IT. My mother is so proud. I have spent the last few years studying and creating, but now I find it hard to be taken seriously, not from my looks, but because of my heritage. Everyone keeps trying to give me things, like my father’s old studio, full access to the archives, everything is given to me. But I am trying to earn it.  That’s why I’m moving, I’m going to make my own studio, my own projects, my own ideas. I have already learned everything that I can from my father’s works, and the old studios.

               “I am ready to make my mark.”

Tyrel Story Summary

Under cut. Also I’m posting this mostly because I have no idea if I’ll ever finish the final version and I wanna at least get the concept down.

It’s dumb. It’s cliche. It’s Cheesy. I’m not a writer and this is why.

Okay so first note a bunch of characters don't have names yet so I'm temporarily calling them nicknames based on either in-game professions or specializations until I decide on names I like. With the exception of [Norn Buddy] because I have no idea which one to call him.

[Deadeye] = Human. She/Her.

[Mesmer] = Asura. They/Them.

[Guardian] = Charr. He/Him. The Leader of the squad.

[Norn Buddy] = Norn. He/Him

(I really need to finish an updated ref for him and full colour ones for the others)

(note these are the only important characters (aside from Tyrel himself) so far and more may be added later) ------------------------------------- I'm not writing this in any traditional format but instead a really long ramble because I hate words and wording and I only know how to ramble about ideas and thoughts. -------------------------------------- So my previous comic bit is not a final version but will still be considered an initial concept. In it I had the main story start in the Grove but I'm gonna skip the Grove entirely.

The dream (?) itself would be somewhat different showing what seem like blurred partial memories all in the Shiverpeaks, of a norn and his older brother. Including a vision of falling from a high cliff. The icebrood sequence would be at the end and would still be similar, with the exception of an updated design and instead of the axe the icebrood would take Tyrel's sword.

After the vague dream/flashback bullcrap I will show Tyrel on his way to the Shiverpeaks, with one of the Vigil soldiers he will work closely with, [Deadeye].  It would be established that she picked him up from the Grove after he showed interest in joining the Vigil. He would have signed on at the Vigil headquarters there, immediatly being sent to join the same squad as [Deadeye]. The squad's goal of course, being to take down any powerful icebrood that rise up within the area they are in.

Tyrel and [Deadeye] reach camp and introduce Tyrel to the others. Tyrel discovers [Deadeye] is an ex-bandit who would be in jail in DR if it weren't for [Guardian] recruiting her to the Vigil. (It should be noted that [Guardian] is the one who helped put her in jail in the first place, where she spent about 3 years. I want to write a short side comic one day about both her imprisonment and recruitment tbh.)

Tyrel hears a strange noise outside and investigates, getting himself lost. He finds the source of the sound, which turns out to be a bear and he gets hurt/knocked out. The last thing he sees is a large norn coming by, yelling at the bear to come get him instead.

Tyrel then wakes up back at camp, [Guardian] is talking to an unknown yet oddly familiar (to Tyrel) norn man. Tyrel soon finds out the norn is the one who saved him, noticed his uniform and brought him to the closest Vigil camp. The norn, [Norn Buddy] then states he can help the squad find hidden icebrood and svanir before they rise up. Though reluctant and not trusting [Norn Buddy], [Guardian] agrees.

Numerous raids on icebrood/svanir camps later, the full squad come to trust [Norn Buddy], with him becoming like an older brother to Tyrel. [Norn Buddy] tells the squad about a very large camp even further north and [Guardian] agrees to go to it with the squad, but only with more soldiers as backup. They wait until more arrive they head to the svanir camp. Once the squad arrives at the camp, they seem to be expected to come and even with the backup are easily overrun. Tyrel, [Deadeye], and [Mesmer] all make it out along with many other soldiers but both [Guardian] and [Norn Buddy] are nowhere to be found.

When they get back to the Vigil camp, [Deadeye] and [Mesmer] immediately suspect [Norn Buddy] of betraying them. Tyrel, of course, disagrees and runs off in hope of finding him.

Tyrel does find him but stays hidden when noticing a few svanir around. [Norn Buddy] is not fighting them but instead talking about a 'deal' they had. Tyrel then realizes that he did in fact betray the others and confronts him once the svanir are gone. This confrontation doesn't reveal much other the [Guardian] is dead and buried, and [Norn Buddy] had reasons for working with the svanir, even wishing to join them at one point but regretting his decision, realizing it wasn't the answer to 'moving on' as he thought it they could give him. Tyrel is upset and tells him to leave and never come back to the camp as no one will trust him again, especially not Tyrel. ('blah blah your were like a brother to me blah blah.' Kinda thing.)

[Norn Buddy] turns and leaves again and Tyrel returns to camp. After a few days, Tyrel goes to search for him again to get more answers and goes to the svanir camp from before. Leaving [Deadeye] and [Mesmer] a vague letter from which [Mesmer] figures out where he went and the two follow they trail they figure he took.

Tyrel does find him again seemingly alone, but acting odd. He explains to Tyrel that he lost his brother, and he spent years trying to move on but felt like he never could. He eventually sought strength and answers from the svanir and Dragon. When Tyrel tries to help him he asks Tyrel to 'just let him fall'. This is when Tyrel realizes [Norn Buddy] is the 'older brother' he saw in the memories and they all become much clearer to him. They are the memories of [Norn Buddy]'s younger brother who died on a hunting trip, after slipping and falling from a high cliff into frozen water and ice below.

Cue [Norn Buddy] turning icebrood himself. Specifically the very icebrood Tyrel saw in 'the dream'. Because I'm a horrible person.

Same as in 'the dream' Tyrel gets his butt kicked, shot at, etc. As Tyrel lies on the ground, [Norn Buddy] takes Tyrel's sword and lifts it into the air... to hit the other icebrood about to take out Tyrel from behind. [Norn Buddy] comes back to himself and helps Tyrel fight the other icebrood and svanir coming in.

[Deadeye] and [Mesmer] also come in, are about to attack [Norn Buddy] before Tyrel tells them he's on their side and they all kick butt.

All four make it out alive and intact, a proper funeral is given for [Guardian] and the others lost from before. [Norn Buddy] although still looking kinda frozen in confirmed for 'not technically corrupted' and officially joins the Vigil squad to stay and fight alongside his 'brother'.

Everyone is reasonably happy, The End I Guess.

I really like looking at your art a lot! Just a question, what's is your process for drawing characters, and what normally gives you inspiration to make your characters?

So Drawing Characters, This is bit of a rough work through

If I’m working on a new character from scratch. After doing a bit of brainstorming.   I do several thumbnails, but if the vision is clear enough in my head I do a rough sketch.  For example my recent Lady Link.  I don’t have the INITIAL sketch as i tend to pull and push sketches with a marquee or lasso to help with proportions. 

but during the sketching process or before, I gather references for anatomy, character details, proportions, clothes, etc.

I know what link usually looks like, but I’m using Zelda 2 for the specific inspiration for this. so I pull up Katsuya Terada art as well as some other original illustrations... 

Terada uses a mix of Link’s Awakening, LTTP, and Zelda 2.  So I also use some of the original illustration Specifically I used the Cross Shield which I always remembered from when I was little.

The other thing I wanted to do. was give Link an interesting tunic. So I reffed tunics, medieval belts, and sword belts. 

I can’t find my original tunic or all of my sword belt refs.  or the ref for the braid which was more based on viking beards with rings through them. 

However i move on to cleaning up the sketch/inking the piece.

I kept my silhouette as strong as I could  Her main feature being her braid, Which takes the place of link’s classic cap. Trying to keep a similar shape, if a bit exaggerated (a lot).

Afterwards, I start laying down color. 

in this case I wanted a very warm earth tone palette. And i already start putting lighter colors on, as I often start from Shadows, or Midtones. 

Add More highlights, and some slight shadows. Details on her clothes. etc.

Then i do the background (usually I do this WITH the piece. Have a basic idea so I can light the character decently.)  but in this case I pulled up a screenshot of Zelda 1, and pulled some colors off that.   I had to desaturate, and add shadows and highlights to some areas... etc.

A few more steps. I add a light soft light Gradient over top to help integrate the piece, and a light paper texture. Often Sign, and put my contact info on it. I will often put it over a character slightly so If it’s cropped people lose QUITE a bit of the piece, or it’s more difficult to cover up. 

And she’s done!  Inspiration wise. I’m often inspired by other artists, books, games, movies, all sorts of media.  Lots of it being Manga, comics, and games. This piece was inspired by @brellom‘s Lady Link. I just wanted to do my own take on the subject.  Some of my more original characters, are thought through by talking to friends, discussing what would be cool and brainstorming. I often talk to my mentor to brain storm, and get critique on the idea AND the work in progress as well.

Understanding Illustration (focusing on graphic novels and comics)

The term illustration is increasingly embracing a diversity of practices. For example, if we are talking about wordless narrative, this could include formats such as the more traditional comic/ graphic novel, single spreads, and could even include animation and film. Moving image can be quite different however, as sound or music is often included, adding to the atmosphere or story which is being shown.

The popularity of graphic novels has increased greatly and has become more widespread in recent years, experimenting and tackling various subject matter. Artists from around the world are adapting the form to explore new areas including biographical investigation using layered storytelling. Here are some examples of some artists who use the medium in different successfully creative ways.

Illustrator Shaun Tan, who has a very strong graphic style and approach, produces his short narratives in a more “fragmentary than continuous” way, as he says this is how memory (particularly his) works. Placing parts of the narrative in a squared grid format, where each individual panel is unique and shows a different location/scene, but is clearly linked to the previous. Like when remembering events of a day you might only remember little details but not the bigger picture. I believe this is a really fascinating way of thinking, and the way it is produced accompanied by his realistic yet unrealistic style really does make certain parts seem like a dream sequence, but the narrative easy to follow. Tan’s work uses a fairly autobiographical approach, admitting that he uses personal experience and emotions to inspire his characters, at least in certain stories such as in “ The Arrival”. Again, I believe this to be almost integral, as the more you can relate to your own characters, the better “written” and life-like they seem. Tan also uses metaphor often in his stories, for example in “Eric” the character throughout the story seems quite emotionless and blank, but at the end leaves a beautiful garden of plants for the people whom he was staying with, showing his enjoyment and appreciation, that he really was a colourful character even if it didn't show outwardly. The flowers were the only bright colourful thing in the story, the rest was plain, making the meaning obvious.

The example used earlier of a graphic novel layout including various small frames grouped together, scenes like this are to be read as one unified whole or a “single thematic moment” rather than frames of sequential action. It is also important to note that when producing a wordless narrative, sometimes less is more. It’s important to preserve the enigmatic nature of the experience by keeping the images minimal, this allows the reader room to intemperate and process. This is the element which makes animation for example, very different, as in an animation the movement is fluid and does not have those gaps which panels in a sequential narrative possess, meaning the audience does not need to fill in those movements in the same way, it is shown. The spaces between panels allow us to focus on feeling and to actively take part or interpret, as Tomer Hanuka puts it, “It forces the reader to find a connection with his own thought in a given moment, putting himself in the action while trying to find a solution for what is disguised as a riddle”.

Asaf and Tomer Hanuka’s work in their collaboration “The Dirties” a lot of the angles shown in the comic are inspired by cinematic language and iconic images. The world in which the children are in from what we see is dystopian, looking like the sort of place that children (especially without adult supervision) should not be. The artstyle, viewpoints, detail and use of an unnatural -looking saturated colour palette also adds to this feeling of uneasiness. It makes readers feel uneasy because its a world that “could exist and the viewer trusts you enough to explore for a little while.” Like Tan, these two were inspired by their shared history and personal events. The narrative is laden with symbolic meaning, the visuals of the environment and world in which it is set are bound with the narrative itself. This is also an important thing to note: the story must exist within the universe you create around it, in mine I have made sure that although I’m creating more of SciFi world, it makes sense with the original text as this man finds himself in a strange place in which he is lost and does not know the language. I merely chose to exaggerate the meaning of “Foreign city”.

This book was extremely useful for me to look at, it gave me a lot of new ideas which I would like to try for myself, helping me to understand a multitude of narrative devices and how to employ them. What I learnt about the world in which your narrative is set was very interesting to me, as I did want to change it somewhat from the original for mine, but it still makes sense even in this different setting. I now have to think more about how I can relate to the main character, perhaps using some of my own experiences to inspire things that might occur in my narrative adaption, and decide how to use certain panel layouts depending on what is happening in the scenes.
