What's your problem? What will you gain by doing this? You don't have to like or rb, but encouraging others to block is shameful. 😡

So, obviously I feel zero shame about encouraging people to block content thieves, and it's extremely funny to get lectured by one about what constitutes shameful behavior. But "what do I gain by doing this" is an interesting question.

When I was traveling recently I got to do some gardening, which was really nice and something I don't get to do often. Most of that time was spent digging and pulling out weeds by hand. It was kind of exhausting, hurt my hands after a while, and honestly a lot of those damn roots broke off, so I know the weeds will come back eventually. So what did I gain by doing it? Removing a few weeds from a corner of a garden to make room to plant something else to grow, until the weeds come back and we need to do it all over again?

The thing is, before we started that garden, the soil there was dead. No worms, no bugs, not much growing aside from this awful grass that choked everything else out. But after 15 years of work, a little at a time, that garden is FULL of worms and snails and spiders and bees etc etc etc. It's bursting with life because we kept at it, pulling up those weeds and planting things that would help the soil become more alive. Bugs came back, and birds, and bigger animals that like to sneak in and eat the flowers when our backs are turned. We gained a thriving ecosystem. We gained mornings drinking coffee, watching the garden fill with life like a garden is meant to be.

That's what I'm doing when I call out spammers, ai posters, and content thieves so people can block them. These kinds of blogs spoil the ecosystem here by flooding it with fake and stolen art, taking attention away from real creators who are strugging to find an audience. I only have a few followers, my posts aren't going to purge tumblr of this kind of content anymore than I can fully remove every weed in a garden.

But maybe by pulling enough weeds in my little corner, I can make room for a few real artists to thrive. By encouraging people to block stolen and fake content, I'm reducing the amount of garbage in their feeds. I'm reminding them that real art is made by actual people. I'm asking them to look for real art instead, to find the sources of the art they like and support those creators. I'm trying to direct some attention toward people who rely on their art for a living and hopefully grow their audiences a little. What I gain is making life more livable here in the hopes that artists will keep coming here and posting their work and connecting with people who love what they do. That makes tumblr a nicer place for all of us.

tl;dr I'm making my little corner of the internet a better place, and I wish more people were trying to do that instead of stealing and spamming to get as many like and reblogs as possible.

I am your average generic, EVOSmp, YHS, Aphmau, Yogscast raised individual. When it comes to Minecraft servers I am extremely niche, I like pretty much all forms of Minecraft and will give any series a shot. I was into Hermitcraft roughly around season 3-4, starting with Xisuma/Mumbo perspective. My love for the content creators there (Including Bdubs) started in my youth and I'm very proud to have been supported and loved in this community for so long.

The life-series kind of falls in place there too but the biggest thing that was the start of my re-hyperfixation was EmpiresSmp and the introduction of Mythicalsausage. I have been a long since viewer of Lizzie & Joel from their old days on Minecraft and I continue to watch them to this day!

i was a queue monitor for a source blog for almost two years and it just really tiring even with working with other people because by the end people got busy/other commitments/stopped being interested etc. i remember a few times queueing up about a week worth of posts for like two hours (and everything had to be tagged which was why it took so long) my thumbs were begging me to stop lmao

a lot of fandom 'elders' or the people who did like gif-ing especially didn't see a lot of results for their labor. no one was reblogging their posts and the high like to rb ration compared to the past was a heavy blow because tumblr is a blogging based platform and rb's are the only way for posts to passed around (esp on older posts like from 2014-16) also a lot of the older creators are transitioning from school to full time work

theres also this death of interacting which each other in a casual way (unless you have an established following for that and ask games) like there are posts going around being like you can talk to me! send me questions! etc etc but no one is really doing that

in terms of fan content like everyone waits for the one big current thing to talk about like rn with dungeon meshi i feel like the last anime to pop off like on tumblr was spy family which was like two(?) years ago (the other animes dont' really pop their head [like sleeping giants lmao] or like keep in their contained circles but i might be nickpicking here) also new people coming in and not adapting to tumblr blog culture like is there even a source blog for dungeon meshi?

i had a fandom post that reached 3k 873 rb to 2127 likes, the majority of the people rb the post from me rather than a person they followed, there were only like two major rb chains which speaks volumes about the current follow culture here, everyone is going through the tags rather than following the creators

I knew about the like-reblog ratio problem but source blogs were created partly in order to encourage people to reblog stuff, so it’s sad to see that even they have fallen victims to this trend.

The Next Big Thing Syndrome (yeah, I’m calling it that) is also definitely a huge factor. I don’t think there are source blogs for DanMeshi, and you were the one who made me realize that. I’m baffled.

I also didn’t notice that the changes influx of followers and decreasing interactions were a thing for everyone. I honestly thought it was just me because I’d been on and off in unintentional semi-hiatuses last year. This is sad as hell.

as someone who's gone through my archive already, you know i started out as a bts fan account in 2015. (my previous blog is not gonna be discussed for the simple reason that it's barely relevant to this one)

i believe i used to tag and organise my reblogs? there was a time where i cared enough and i loved srolling through my own blog, i stopped enjoying that when i became more involved w/ fandom on here and things weren't aesthetics based anymore. i don't like going through it that much now. i used to play around with themes, search for them, tweak colours and fonts for hours. after i returned years later there was an issue with the editor so now i can't change my theme at all and it sucks cause i just want to edit a few things.

so it started of as a bts fanblog, then i started rb-ing other kpop stuff, maybe afterwards i started sharing gifsets from movies and series i liked? as for fandom, i had a good amount of mutuals - accidentally became one with a girl from my country, we went out once and it was very nice <3 procrastinated and lost track fo tag games back then too lmaoo i felt a lot of dissatisfaction over it so i try to do everything now with my current fandom :)

back then is when i started reading fanfiction - i believe my first imagine was a taegi one where v was an artist and yoongi a photographer lol i stumbled upon it on the dash randomly and i got introduced to ao3 a bit after

iirc for the following years after i'd stopped stanning bts, i used to come back either relatively often or once in a blue moon - in the beginning i was just enjoying wtv my dash was offering me or seeking out specific stuff, then i started using it as a tracklist of what shows i've watched haha, no tags, just rb after finishing a show.

i started engaging with fandom around the release of episode 5 of kinnporsche, i read a bunch of posts on here, then tms2 came around and i got even more into reading people's takes..at some point i started talking to people i guess hahah i don't even know when i started trying to put out content, so to say, i just know i was doing screenshot posts short before i found myself pushed to attempt gifs and that was after big dragon had just finished airing.

then i started my giffing journey. had support from @gillianthecat whom i loved giffing paulnice for. honestly that and the discussions we had were such an important part of me having fun with this site and keeping it up. and @joyladagang, my self-proclaimed #1 hype woman, made me feel super welcome. then i got even more moots, at some point i started reaching out or actively reciprocating others attempts at getting closer (though i had been active in discussions before that, i just mean i got a bit braver and started acting more familiar with everyone (esp w/ ppl i got closer to through @joyladagang like @cankersoregirl, @feralmuskyscentedhoepran, @loserlesbianongsa etc.)

i'm grateful to a lot of people on here, truly. it's not supposed to be a shoutout post so i won't be tagging any more people (esp since i would have to tag everyone who follows me plus a bunch of people i follow which..it's a bit much) but i'm genuinely thankful for each person that enjoys my rants, gifs, theories or wtv the things i post classify as, whether they found a post by accident or follow the blog. and i'm grateful to the creators i follow, and i'm happy to talk to so many sweet, smart and funny individuals on various topics daily.

hi anon ! I took some time before replying to this to collect my thoughts but here we are :D

so for me this is very deliberate wording. immediately jumping to ungrateful because I think posts should be reblogged is pretty ridiculous imho! so id like to break it down for you

i used to make moodboards and icon / header packs! some of my most popular posts from that time have 523 and 401 notes respectively. out of these 532 notes, 28 were reblogs, 494 were likes and one was a reply. and out of the 401 notes 36 were reblogs and 365 were likes. some of those posts have as few as 4 reblogs. this is extremely frustrating because it means my content was enjoyed but not deemed worthy of spreading. i would see it used on twitter and on discord or even reposted without credit because the time I took to compile it was never taken into account. it was always brushed off as 'easy to do' and as such simply not worthy of proper engagement.

when a post is reblogged, it is boosted to other blogs and as such to the dash of people who follow that blog. that's new, fresh engagement and new exposure, every time. that engagement is also going to push your post up in the search results, but unfortunately, most of the time people are not going to go searching for posts to like/rb and instead they will reblog what is already on their dash. this is why that engagement is so important for content creators of all kinds.

it is nice to receive likes, yes. and I will happily admit that since getting into a new type of content creation, my reblogs are not that bad but I am typically receiving double what I receive in reblogs in likes alone. having nearly 600 notes for not even a third of them to be reblogs can be frustrating because i know that my content is not receiving as much new exposure as it could. I do this to have fun, not to be famous on Tumblr of all sites but I have to admit that it feels wonderful for people to engage with my content and appreciate it.

likes are awesome !! they really are !!! but ultimately they do not really help content creators gain or maintain any type of footing in the community. especially not because a lot of people have their likes hidden. if I receive 200 likes on a post, 100 of those people will have their likes hidden and that's being stingy with the numbers tbh!. out of those 100 people with visible likes, maybe 5 or so people will go through their likes at any given time and if they're an avid user of Tumblr, that has to be done pretty quickly for them to see my post. chances are they don't engage with it, meaning that even though it adds to my numbers and its a nice gesture... it's essentially pointless.

on the flip side, if I get 100 reblogs and each of those blogs has, on average, 5 active followers; that's a shit ton of blogs I am suddenly visible to. not all of them will choose to interact with me or my content and that's okay because it still gives me visibility and that is extremely important.

personally, I like and reblog. if I haven't reblogged something, I queue it. but honestly , if I had to choose the way people engage with my posts I would rather them just rb if they're going to choose one! it helps me massively and I am ever grateful for the people who rb my posts because I immediately see the engagement from their following whereas I gain little to no fresh engagement from reblogs alone.

ccs; writers, gif makers, gfx artists, etc etc etc all spend a ridiculous amount of time doing what we love to do, and no, we are not entitled to anything from anyone but to say that if you enjoy our content and benefit off of it (if you're using it as an icon somewhere else, or saving it onto your phone to be your wallpaper, or showing your friends, or getting the feels from it because that fanfic was just so <333333 then you're benefitting from it!) ... then you can give us a boost. especially if you are consistently enjoying our content.

the bottom line is that the reblog system keeps this site going. if we keep going down this path then all of these content creators you know and love are going to get frustrated and leave when the only form of engagement truly benefitting them dwindles even further. and I can't say I blame them because ill be right there with them

morning friends! so I still can't rb, comment, or read asks and messages rn since my tumblr is glitching (╥﹏╥) (I'm most likely shadowbanned rip) but I just wanted to talk about the post @decayish made about engagement with content creators.

content creators are not here to solely serve you. they most likely started because they love what they're doing and it's a fun way to connect with others and ruining that for them and treating them like they're here to cater to your wishes is SO disrespectful.

if you send hate or are rude to creators (i.e. rushing them, sending hate, sending backhanded compliments - look at @sanzucide's blog to see what I mean by that) don't be surprised when they deactivate, you have no right to complain. they have lives and jobs just like any other person, you are not entitled to their time.

leading to this point, a lot of these creators are doing this for free and that is a PRIVILEGE. if they decide to start monetizing their content, that is extremely reasonable and to suggest otherwise is disrespectful as hell. @megumi-divine has gotten a stupid amount of weird feedback/hate from people who are on anon and yall are lucky that she's still on here and posting.

literally no one is holding you hostage and making you read works that you don't appreciate. while giving feedback is always nice if it's positive, you have to understand how sending anon hate can affect someone's mental health. if you don't like what you're seeing, simply scroll past it and if you don't like the content of someone's blog, simply don't follow them or block them. i repeat, NO ONE IS HOLDING YOU HOSTAGE. ](also note how when a lot of people turn off the option of anon that hate gets heavily reduced)

lastly, i would just like to say that as a small blog i've had overwhelmingly positive interactions and i cannot thank my followers and moots enough for that. someone's blog should be their safe space and to terrorize them for something that they do for their enjoyment is disgusting and you should really re-evaluate your priorities.

some tips for writing blogs, especially those who are just starting out. these are some things that works for me and may or may not work for others.

how to add a read more link on mobile

type :readmore: on a free space, then hit the enter or return button

personally i think they’re very helpful because it lessens the space you take up in your dash, and might encourage more people to rb

+ you can also add this on a spot where it gives a sort of cliffhanger, essentially making people want to ‘read more’

headers, banners, and dividers

though not necessary, it’s good to have a title for your work. make sure it’s bold and doesn’t blend in with your notes (aka pairing, warnings, etc.). this also helps when someone wants to look up one of your works in your search bar

i don’t really make banners or covers for my works. but some good apps that i know of would be picsart and canva. if you’re looking for ideas, i definitely recommend going into canva

wondering how to make those really small, thin dividers? you can make them using picsart! to make a divider hit tools > free crop > brush > size (adjust it to your preference > then draw a line along the edge of your photo > save

using the divider you just saved, go back to picsart and edit it again > draw option > hit rainbow square at the bottom left corner > hit suction/droplet symbol right below the check mark > color in the white spots bc for some reason picsart glitches and makes dividers look white-ish

new blog? just opened an account?

this is gonna sound really frustrating. but... tumblr needs to check if you’re a bot or not. what does this mean? it’s likely that your first few posts won’t show up on the search bar. you may not even get to edit your header/pfp yet ://

this happened to me and there was no visibility on my account at ALL. what helped me get ‘verified’ is that i followed a LOT of accounts, liked a bunch of posts, made some posts here and there. now that lets tumblr know you’re not a bot

the tumblr tagging system usually only allows the first 5 tags in your post to show up. so, what can do you about this? only use FIVE or less tags in your post. wait about 15 minutes or more until you can add some more tags in your post, and they usually all show up like that

another important thing about using tags is not to generalize! especially if you’re using a popular tag. but also don’t specify it too much where barely anyone looks it up. for example, if you’re writing a gn piece about oikawa, i recommend you use the tags such as: oikawa x reader, haikyuu x reader, oikawa x gn!reader, haikyuu headcanons, etc

a good rule of thumb is to use character x reader tags first, then leave the full name or fandom tag last

FOR NSFW: tumblr doesn’t let any tags with nsfw show up. so, give your nsfw works another tag. maybe #namegetspicy idk, you figure it out

FOR WARNINGS: especially if you’re a dark content creator, i highly encourage you to add tw:xyz tags. if you already have a warning note at the top then that’s great. but even better for readers who prefer to actually block these tags that way they never get to see it

another important thing to note is that people have different timezones. it helps if you rb your work at a different time of the day, in case people missed it! (icymi) i’ve noticed that reblogging helps to make your post show up in the tags

interaction + feedback

first and foremost, you are not obligated to write for your followers, and neither are your followers obligated to interact with you. remember that everyone has their own individual lives, and they have their own things to do— so do you, too.

make friends! become mutuals with other writers, visit their ask box. i know it can be daunting having to initiate these things, but you might just turn out to have fun! you can’t expect people to interact with you if you’re not interacting (back). it’s... kind of a two way thing yk? no need to be afraid to interact with other writers. oh, and rb other writers works!

pspsps join tag games or do ask games. it’s fun and very interactive

it never hurts to ask for feedback. i usually do this in a more subtle way because i don’t really expect a full on analysis on my works. maybe a little, is this okay? or feedback appreciated. sometimes it takes a little bit of coaxing for the silent readers

formatting your posts and blog

i generally put in the title at the top in big, bold letters

then comes the header/divider. helps to make the post more... visually appealing ig?

it’s important to add warnings (if any) and the pairing. the audience is not all female, and it might be a little frustrating for male readers having to find out its an x fem reader piece like halfway through your fic

if you have multiple works posted, it’s really really helpful to have a navigation page!

you can organize the posts you make with tags! for example, if you’re shitposting, you can use a specific tag for that. if you have a nsfw related post (ESPECIALLY when your blog is open to the general audience) please make a tag for it

themes + colors

if you have a color in mind but don’t know which direction to go from there, i recommend looking up color + aesthetic

looking to use the same color? download a name color app that’ll give you a hex code for any color you want to use. then, you can type in that hex code for when you’re choosing a color for your tumblr bio

wondering how to make your header image small like mine? just choose a photo for your header and turn off the stretch image option

want to use a different text color that tumblr doesn’t offer? it’s not as complicated as you think. you’ll have to go on a desktop to do this and do some html (but trust me, it’s not very difficult). look up “HTML noob but trying my best - how to use colored text on desktop”

how to make an aesthetic navi and masterlist

step 1: decide a theme! if you’re stuck, think about a character + color/season/mood or look up “[insert] aesthetic” to find some inspiration. or you can try looking at other blogs too

step 2: find a color scheme! it’s easier if you choose fewer colors. if you want to use the same color for both divider and text, download a color name app in order to get the hex code of that color.

step 3: add categories to your navi! most navigation pages include a link to masterlist, about/byi, and rules. your navi should have a title that indicates that it’s... a navigation page. you can add thin colored dividers with the same color to make it easier for followers to navigate

step 4: you can choose to create a ‘cover’ or a picture for your navigation and masterlist! again, i recommend you use the canva app as a starting point

extra: search up emoticon symbols to spice up your titles!

ur missing the point of my post i think? okay let me break it down to you: fandom, for me at least, is about making friends. you become friends when someone reaches out and talks to you or when you reach out and talk to someone. i have NEVER restricted anyone from talking to me. my dms are always open, meaning anyone can message me. i have asks open, anon on, so anyone can share any opinion they want with me, which you are doing right now, and they can potentially ‘befriend’ me and reveal who they are later, if they so choose. obviously, i control what asks get published on my blog, but that’s besides the point

the point is—am i obligated to answer every ask i receive? no. i have over 3,600 unanswered asks right now. i cannot possibly do that without destroying the dashes of everyone that follows me. and the point of my post is that no one is obligated to reblog anything from anyone BECAUSE people experience and curate their experiences differently. promoting better reblog culture and better fandom interactions is an extremely good thing. what i was hopefully getting across is that trying to pin that responsibility on any group/individual in any community is EXTREMELY counterproductive. it will get us nowhere

as for why i ‘rarely give attention to stuff outside my circle’ it’s very simple. i have Already curated my experience. i don’t look at posts in the tags. i don’t want my day ruined. i also cannot follow people who shit talk dream or george or quackity etc. and a bunch of other creators. idk how to tell you this but dteamblr is very small compared to other sectors of mcytblr. most of my mutuals/friends are people that actively post. or at least actively posted at some point that we were able to cross paths. the people i talk to a lot/the most i either don’t know their follower count or they told me for some reason and its anywhere from 50 to like a few thousand. so what do i do w my friends? i don’t really turn on notifications, but i do for a small handful. i promise you it’s very random and has nothing to do with follow count. i also don’t check my dash a lot. so if something is getting reblogged a lot, it increases my chances of seeing it, but even then… half the times i don’t see what my mutuals have been saying. most of the posts on my blog are my own posts or whatever i dump into my queue

which is my next point. i use the ‘stuff for you’ tab on the tumblr mobile app. that’s where i get most of the posts i queue. its like half fandom stuff half random shit. ik. its a SUPER scuffed ‘for you page’ but yes. i generally trust that tab to show me cool stuff. and often times what the algorithm decides is ‘for me’ are posts that already have a bunch of notes. so that’s the stuff i end up queuing. if my queue is running low, i go on there to queue a bunch of stuff and then i go. i mainly interact w my tumblr account through my friends and my activity page (that i have filtered so i see asks n replies n reblogs) so if i rb something my friend made, it’s because they sent it to me. anyone is welcome to send anything to me! but there’s no guarantee that i’ll reblog it because ultimately this is my blog and i decide what goes on it. i could ignore a piece of art w 5k notes. i could rb something w 100 notes. i can’t prove it to you because you don’t have access to how i browse, but i assure you i don’t look at art and go ‘well this only has x number of notes… not reblogging it then!’ like my blog isn’t my job i just do random shit here. im not gonna scour my dash and the tags head to toe for content. im sure im missing out on a ton of content but i simply do not have the time. i also make my own content so… i’m just gonna do what’s fun and easy for me. this is fandom. i’m not being paid to reblog your posts. you can if you want to! do you want to support a struggling student? my ko-fi is in my bio. does that horrify you? yeah exactly. fandom is for fun so while we can and should promote a supportive culture, no one is OBLIGATED to do anything

My dude, its not that your content is boring, or you are a bad writer, or that people hate you. Quite the contrary, you are incredibly creative and passionate and that is always a delight to see. The thing is you are on a dying website on a fandom that tends to be the butt of jokes (so most people dont want to be associated with it) and you write about one of the last popular characters there. I can't help but feel that way lately ever since my instrusive thoughts came back bad the worst they've ever been and it feels like everyone is proving all the horrible things my mind is telling me about myself and my work to be true. It just seems like people don't really care about what I have to offer anymore, like I can't entertain anymore so now I'm worthless. The idea that my creations that make me happy makes others happy too is one of the only things that kept me going and motivated to share more but it feels like it's dwindling. I appreciate you and everyone else that has been supporting me and I'm glad you still enjoy my content. I don't want to seem ungrateful but my mind is being nasty to me and seeing how a lot of people seem to be losing interest across all three of my blogs more than ever is getting me down even more.

It's a shame that the site is dying when Twitter is garbage that kills the passion and creativity of many. Yeah that might be a part of it but I definitely have a more active follower base than it seems most of the time. I notice this when a bunch of people following me only like/rb/interact with stuff I reblog and clearly scroll past my self made posts in between. And yeah Eggman isn't that popular, especially not modern/game canon. But I'm even starting to feel like an outcast to the Eggman fandom space here (despite being here before most since 2015 when there were barely any Eggman posting blogs. I was the one accused of gatekeeping for not liking jimbotnik but I'm the one feeling pushed out and alienated now lol) because I don't like the movie and I'm not big on the popular romantic ships, headcanons, and fanon interpretations now. It just feels like everything I do is wrong and what I have to offer is never good enough, or the interest doesn't last because I don't do all the new things that are considered cool now.

Undoubtedly part of it is also that I write more. But fuck man, art is hard and even harder when you have to digitalize it on a phone. It's become more stressful than fun so I can't do it a lot. I just wish that fandoms didn't always make creators feel like writing doesn't matter and isn't as good as art. I've seen people entirely disregard writing and automatically assume it to be trash just because it isn't art. And a lot of people don't tend to support writing like they do with art, even if they do like it. But I wish people understood that creators need at least some support if they want them to keep creating, otherwise they won't think it's worth it or anyone cares. We're not mindless content machines to pump out content and entertain until people get bored of us. Both art and writing takes time, passion, and effort and a bit of support goes a long way but sometimes you get nothing but silence and it can be more crushing than hate at times, left to wonder if your creations were even worth your time to create or anyone else's to consume.

But aside from that, what also gets me down is that I do actually see people supporting other's writing and encourage more from them but I don't get any of that type of support, feedback, or criticism from those very same people when it comes to mine, despite them being so similar. I tend to get brushed off or ignored or nowhere near as much hype. And I know it sounds like jealousy but it honestly just makes wonder what, is it just my stuff specifically that's just not good enough for them? And it just never seems good enough, no matter how hard I try. I realize there are times it is in fact personal and I have no idea why because they don't tell me and I feel terrible when it ends up confirming my fears, then I worry if it's always the case. That's the stuff that hurts the most, more than people just outright telling me if they don't like or aren't interested in my stuff anymore, which would hurt less.

I know not everyone thinks I should die really but it's easy to think that way in times where I get insults and suicide bait from people shitting on me and what I do more than I get positive or supportive comments. So that's why it feels like people just want me to die, I'm told so in my inbox. I'm not saying I demand endless high praise but just someone simply saying they enjoyed something I posted instead of just silence has a way bigger positive impact than they think but some don't anymore. And if there's a reason why or it isn't personal, I wish they'd tell me so it puts my mind to rest, instead of pretending I don't see blatant disinterest or the ignoring that drives me mad and kills motivation. The hateful people are more vocal and then it feels like nobody else cares and it drags me down.

I swear some people, both general followers and some people I'm closer to are just losing interest and getting sick of me personally and it's hard seeing it happen and seemingly being unable to do anything, making it feel like my time of being capable of doing anything good and likable in their eyes has passed. And it's just hard accepting that and letting it go, especially when you never get the real answers and you're left wondering what went wrong and why you're not good enough anymore. I've had moments of realization where my heart sinks when I present something I'm proud of and I get unenthusiastic responses or silence. And feeling either people drift away or being insulted more often than anything positive gives my sick brain a lot to work with in further attacking me with nasty intrusive thoughts too. But like I said, that last part is on me and I feel I'm just genuinely too mentally ill to handle being on the internet.

I appreciate all of you that do support me and my passion and creations, it might just look silly on the surface with my rambling and gushing but what I create is important to me and it means the world to me that it's enjoyed by anyone else. It gets tough with my mind and negativity I receive but I try not to lose sight of the positive things or forget people enjoy my work, which makes it worth turning my passion and ideas into something I can share. I'm trying to get better at not letting negative and hateful stuff matter and only value the good but sometimes when I'm already dealing with enough privately and come online and see this happening too, it's the little extra push I need to reach the breaking point. But at the same time, when I'm in some of my darkest places with things I don't talk about, coming online and seeing kind words and knowing my stuff is enjoyed means everything and manages to put a smile on my face, no matter how awful I feel. And that's what keeps me creating and sharing for as long as I'm here. Thank you. 💜

okay, i'll answer everything as thoroughly as i can. everything is under the cut cause its a long post.

yes, people dm each other all the time! its basically the same as messenger. its how users chat with each other, although it's not the best messenger in the world. most people will chat for a bit, then exchange social media to talk on instead.

2. what about asks, what even are they and how do they come across for people?

asks are what people tend to use when approaching a user that they've never spoken to before, like a "hey! i like your content, is it cool if i dm you?"

people also use asks as a way of requesting art/fics, complimenting their work, their blog, etc. before dm's existed, everybody spoke via the ask box, and some people still prefer to use it rather than using laggy dm's.

3. why does it seem like it’s bad to like things but not reblog them?

tumblr is similar to twitter where liking doesnt really do anything. reblogging stuff is the way to get content out there, and showcase the things you enjoy. a lot of users will like a post, and reblog it to add it to their blog. its very similar to twitter; if you enjoy a tweet, retweet it so your followers can see it and enjoy it too.

4. people don’t think it’s stealing to just rb stuff?

not at all! stealing would be to create an entirely new post and copy someone elses content. reblogging keeps the post with the original poster. reblogging is good! we want people to reblog more! like i said, its similar to twitter. reblog all the stuff you enjoy!!!

5. and when you rb, are you supposed to add something or not? and what about comments?

you can do, if you want. when you reblog, the opportunity is there for you to leave a comment about the original post, but its not necessary. ive noticed that when people reblog my fics, if they want to leave feedback/praise, they'll do it by commenting on the reblog. you can leave a comment, but its not essential.

6. is it like tik tok where commenting is good or is it like instagram where no one really looks at the comments?

i dont use tiktok so i cant compare it, but people do look at comments on tumblr. the main thing we use is reblogs, like twitter, but comments are also a go-to.

Hi Sky, I saw those weird hate messages and just...lol. How do people have nothing better to do. You're respectful and everything you post is public and you credit everyone properly, sometimes I worry about the general intelligence level of humanity. By their logic, if you're a saesang, I am too, because I rb everything you and other content creators post. I hope you're not too bothered by those comments, they're just useless people who are determined to hate everyone and everything instead of just enjoying something good and focusing on what brings them happiness.

This attitude is probably part of why Tumblr is slowly dying. I've also been on this site a little longer than you, and just like you, I took kind of a break for a few years and then came back properly during the pandemic and saw how different it was and how many people have left. 2012 Tumblr was so fun and it gave me so much joy and got me through a lot. Even now, fandom is the main thing that keeps me going, because it's the best way to distract myself from my life. I get genuinely overwhelmed and sad that this site is dying. I know it's a bit silly because it's just a website, but it kind of feels like.....home to me? Anyway, I'm glad there are still some gifmakers like you around, I love coming on here and seeing the stuff everyone made and that everyone is as excited as me.

OH EM JAYYY hi anon wth thank u sm ☹️💖 im so glad u think that and that's so nice for u to say!! i'm probably the worst person to ask for tips on making moots but i can most definitely share my personal thoughts? im actually horrible at making moots tbh 😭 i'm not normally one to interact first, so pls keep that in mind when you read this :>

this post is so fucking long im so sorry 😭 here's the tl;dr version bc u totally don't have to read anything below the cut unless ure really really bored: find blogs that are similar to yours, read their carrd/byf/dni, go thru their blog quickly before interacting, interact w their posts, but only interact with people that make posts you genuinely like (i.e. don't make moots for the hell of it), don't spam, vibe check (if they don't seem like they want to be moots, it happens! just back off!), prioritise having higher quality friendships rather than increasing your moot count, put disclaimers in your carrd/about me that say you would like to make moots so people know you're approachable. 

the way i've met most of my moots are through interactions on my/their posts. for example, they would read my story and share their thoughts through an rb/ask. then, i'd respond (by reblogging their reblog or by replying to their ask) and we'd hit it off from there. the reverse is also true — i've read people's stories, shared my thoughts on them, and they've responded from what i've said. personally, i think this is a really organic way of meeting people because most people on tumblr share their content with the intention that it gets interaction — for example, i write bc i really like it, but i also publish it because i love hearing what people think about it. i imagine a lot of other writers/content creators are the same, so again, interacting w people's content is a really great way to start a conversation! 

the thing about interacting with people's content is that i 1000% believe you need to be genuine about it. don't interact with people's posts with the sole purpose of becoming their moot — it should be about finding people that share your interests rather than increasing your friend/moot/follower count. before you interact with someone, think about why you're doing it. do you genuinely like them? or do you just want another follower? hopefully, the reason you'd even want moots in the first place is to find people that are similar to you; ones who share your interests and share content you want to see on your dash. as such, only interact with posts/content that you genuinely enjoy, like, and would love to see more of — that's how you can build really high-quality friendships, rather than superficial ones. i'm not sure that makes much sense? 

as an extension of what i've just said, if you see someone whose content you really like and you think you'd get along with, there are some preemptive things you can do to make sure things don't go weird. firstly, definitely read their carrds/byf/dni/about me posts because it'll tell you a lot about who they are and the kind of people they expect will interact with them. i'd also have a quick scroll through their blog and consider some things like whether or not you'd actually get along — what's their vibe like? do you have similar interests? are your blogs similar? do you stan the same groups? do you share the kind of content they'd actually want to see on their dash? these questions will kinda help you gauge whether or not your friendship will fizzle quickly or if you'll genuinely get along for a really long time !

personally, i'd never approach someone and ask "hey let's be moots!" in the same way i wouldn't walk up to a complete stranger and ask, "hey can we be friends?". it's not that i think there's anything inherently wrong with that (i actually have a few moots whom i met that way), i just think there are some considerations to take into place. before approaching anyone, it's important to consider whether or not you'd get along, which is why i recommend going through their blog and seeing what they're like. it'll save some awkwardness in the future, especially if you soon notice they're not a very interactive person and probably don't want moots in the first place. 

the people i most enjoy interacting with (i.e. my favourite moots) are ones whom i genuinely get along with really well — i actually really do like their content (and uh i hope they feel the same way LKDSJF), we have similar senses of humor, we don't bombard each other with notifs in way that feels super overbearing, and they're actually very very nice people. sometimes, we might get too swept up in this idea of "omg i want moots so bad" that we kind of just approach anyone, or our moot's moots, and that's why our friendships fall flat or the fizzle quickly. you need to find people whose blogs are similar to yours and go from there :) 

if there are other general tips i can add, i'd probably say that there are ways you can try make yourself more approachable. for example, you can put a disclaimer on your navi/about me/carrd that you do want to make moots and that you don't mind if people approach you first (i've done that in my carrd so people know it's totally okay to approach me!), always respond to your asks nicely, don't be problematic or start fights with other people, and don't be afraid to show off your personality in your posts. in terms of maintaining moots, check in with them every now and then (if it's actually been a while since you've interacted) by sending them asks or memes or something :> 

i don't know if this was all too helpful and i'm super sorry if this was quite tangential 😭 let me know if u want clarification on anything!! at the end of the day, treat it the same way you would with a real-life person — make sure you have something to talk about (i.e. you have things in common or you like to talk/post about the same things); make sure they're showing signs that they actually do want to be approached; don't stalk them or be weird by spamming them with things you hope they enjoy; and also just all in all be nice! make sure to vibe check; if you're always the one approaching them and they only give you short replies, they're probably not feeling it and it may be best to back off. btw, that's totally okay and it happens all the time, sometimes two people just don't get along :>> don't be too disheartened if you find it hard to make moots or approach people because the internet is so vast and you will certainly find your kind of people <33

I just want to know how you feel about supporting other fanfic writers. on tumblr theres such a huge emphasis put on reblogging fellow creator’s work to boost them. I understand how important that is but as a fairly big blog, do you feel that it is a responsibility on your shoulders to boost others? I ask u this not bc I want you to do anything, but bc I’m in the same position and I’m feeling very pressured to reblog all my mutual’s content. I’m torn between the whole “it’s my blog” view (aka I just want to log on, post and disappear. that’s all I want to do) and also “I have a debt to repay” bc I know how many people supported me when I started out. that being said...I didn’t expect it, and I still don’t expect interaction from anyone. whether some chooses to rb or like my content has never been a concern for me, but I know interaction is a HUGE thing for many writers here. idk I feel disingenuous for reblogging and hyping them up when I’m really not in the headspace for it...and i feel like I’m putting on some kind of front to my followers like I’m a slimy salesman. this might not make ANY sense hope, completely understand hahahah. if u do want to reply I would prefer this ask not to be posted publicly but yeah you’re under no obligation ofc! honestly i think this is a really good question that a lot of people try to navigate — and i would answer privately but because it’s an anon i can’t! however!

i think this is a great discussion to have because you raise a lot of really good points here and you’re not the first person to ask me about this!

it’s been an interesting culture shift — i have been writing on tumblr for well over four years now, so i’ve watched the algorithm slowly begin to kill written mediums steadily. with this, a lot of people started talking about the like to reblog difference and how to “properly support writers on tumblr”.

for me, interactions are interactions — seeing comments or reblogged comments are particularly lovely because it means someone enjoyed your work enough to take the time to talk to you about. same with asks about certain works! it’s incredibly lovely to see these things, read them, and interact with readers. for some, likes operate the same way. some people are just shy. maybe they don’t have time to send a whole literary analysis on the metaphor you used in paragraph eight. and that’s okay!

i think the tumblr obsession with notes and “boosting” fics has gotten a bit out of hand, and in my experience, i’ve noticed a few of the blogs behind these popular posts can be a bit fame-hungry. in reality, being popular on tumblr has little value, really. no money, a good amount of hate, but gain a strong community if you do it right that can be wonderful! that’s the best part - but sometimes these small writers push for a bit of virtue signaling in that you aren’t “supporting writers” if you don’t reblog to gain this. every other post is something about writing floppping, or how people on their tag list need to interact or they’ll be removed.

(yes, seriously i have gotten into beef with someone over this exact practice, just ask lauren.)

this is why i personally don’t like getting messages about “you should read (this fic) by (this writer)” and i get them a lot. it’s a weird feeling because they’re often without explanation, random, and on anon. it feels a lot like trying to game free exposure to 13k followers. i have set a standard where i don’t do fic recs, so i ignore these messages. and that’s just how i roll!

if you really want to support writers on tumblr, donate to their ko-fi’s. commission a writing piece. send them $5 on paypal. we really do this stuff for free. some people may want to be paid in “exposure” (i.e. reblogs) but those reblogs aren’t paying my bills so i dunno what they’re on about. to each their own, but paying for a coffee is the ultimate thank you.

personally, i operate from a standpoint of enjoyment. if i really enjoy a fic, i reblog it. like i’m talking jaw-hits-the floor really love it! i feel it’s important to be mindful if you’re going to do fic recs that you don’t reblog everything. unless you’re a blog specifically meant for that, or you run it that way!

again, everything i’m saying here is my personal take and my personal way of running my blog.

i have been doing this for a long time, with some mediocre success, and truly the worst writer’s block came when i worried about notes. i felt like i wasn’t creating content that was worth it. in reality, i was creating content i enjoyed, but the pressure of seeing those triple digit notes was putting a damper on my style.

giving content creators the thanks they deserve is important, but don’t feel as though it needs to be your full time job. small things go a long way, and a lot of us are immensely grateful for the tiniest of things.
