Tutorial: Building a D3.js Calendar Heatmap (to visualize StackOverflow Usage Data)

Wakey, wakey, welcome everyone to my next D3.js tutorial!

Today we’re going to take a look at StackOverflow’s usage statistics by creating an interactive calendar heatmap using D3.js!

This calendar heatmap shows the numbers of answers posted to StackOverflow in an interactive way, therefore it will allow us to make assumptions about the site's popularity and several insights into it's users behaviors.

In the previous installment of this blogpost series, we checked the most loved programming languages on bar charts made with D3.js, gathered by StackOverflow’s survey.

Let’s stick with StackOverflow in this post as well because they expose a cozily reachable API to their data source.

We’re going to answer the following questions:

Is StackOverflow’s popularity still unrivaled?

How active is the community around it?

What would be an ideal data source and how should I process it?

Well, let’s see how far I can get by creating a calendar heatmap with D3.js.

Sounds cool but what’s a calendar heatmap?

I believe the common ground with my readers is that we all have met GitHub at some point in our lives. If that’s the case, you are already familiar with this chart aka your contribution chart.

It displays your daily contribution (commits, pull requests, etc.) in the past year. Generally, a calendar heatmap comes handy when you want to display values over a longer period.

Let’s get started with building our D3.js chart.

We’re going to build on some of the concepts which have already been introduced in the last article. If you’re new to D3.js, take a look at the previous post where I covered the basics of SVGs, DOM manipulation with d3, scaling, etc.

Extracting the data from StackOverflow for our Calendar Heatmap

I wrote a SQL query that fetches all daily posted answers on StackOverflow over a period.

The next step was to export it in a CSV file and convert it to JSON format. I used the csvtojson NPM library and ended up with the following format:

I always maintain a sequential series of data that carries information about the value of the domain on a specific day. It’s important to abstract the code logic from the domain, so the functionality stays reusable and does not require refactoring to work on other data sources.

Time Travel in D3.js

JavaScript has its nuances when it comes to Date objects.

For example:

You have to number the months starting from zero when you want to create a new Date(2019, 3, 15) // 2019-04-15;

The display format depends on the user machine’s settings and geographical location;

The date object does not support time zones, only time zone offsets that might change due to daylight saving mode.

I bumped to the daylight saving problem myself which resulted in displaying two identical days because of the daylight saving mode.

To overcome this problem we’re using d3-time library that eases the pain coming from time zones, leap years or daylight saving mode. I convert all my Date objects to D3.js’s own wrapper around native Date objects.

Grouping Data Values

We have a list of date and value pairs that we would like to display year by year. I would like some kind of data structure that holds all the values for all years. D3’s collection library has the right tool for us.

The nest function transforms the input list based on the key function. We get a list of objects that include key and the corresponding values. entries take the data source I want to group.

In our case, the year is the key and all the date and value pairs in a year are the values.

Drawing the days in our calendar heatmap

Now as the input is ready, we can start drawing. Each day will be demonstrated as a rectangle, but before that, we need to define a few helper functions.

First, we need to decide whether we would like Sunday or Monday to be the starting point of the week. I’m creating a Monday based calendar in this example.

Also, I define a function to get the name of the day based on the index of the day on a week. To get the index of a day, I’m using getUTCDay().

Besides these functions, there are a few initial values for sizing the rectangles and groups.

Now let’s append a group for each year we would like to display. These groups are the “containers” of the days.

The transform attribute sets the offset of the group to be 40 on the left side and the y coordinate is calculated based on the height of the cellSize.

For each group, I append a caption displaying the year.

Remember, the .text(d => d.key) refers to the nested array which groups the values under a year category.

Now, here comes the essence of the calendar. One rectangle stands for each day that represents a value.

Okay, let’s take a step back, and break down what the code does:

Append a group for each year;

Select all rect in this group;

Bind input data to rectangles;

Create a rectangle for each piece of data that need to be appended;

Set width and height;

Calculate the x coordinate which depends on the week count;

Set the y coordinate based on the index of the day on a week.

The result is the following black & white beauty.

Adding Color & Legend to the Heatmap

Shake things up a little, let’s bring in some colors and also add a legend!

Did I mention how D3 has the right tool for a bunch of problems? For instance, if I would spend my whole day choosing the right colors for every piece of square this post would never end up in the blog. Instead, I am using d3-scale-chromatic that can generate color on a palette scheme by providing it a value between 0 and 1.

I’m feeling more comfy with this solution, but if you want to manipulate colors in the browser, there’s a library for that too! See d3-color in case you want to convert, fade, brighten, etc colors.

Introducing this feature to the code:

I create a helper function to color as well so it’s easier to change it later. I pass the min and max values of the domain so the function can determine a number between 0 and 1 based on the actual domain value. Then I call .attr("fill", d => colorFn(d.value)) on the drawn rectangles.

Moving on to the legend. I would like to indicate what ranges the different color tones mean.

First, I append a new legend group and move it to the end of the years.

Then I divide the range between the min and max value into equal parts. Also, I generate a color for each using the defined colorFn utility function.

Next step is to draw a rectangle for each category that we just created.

Adding labels is more of a copy paste job, so I just assume you’re already familiar with it. If not, here’s the link to the code.

Adding Interactivity to the Heatmap

Now as the image already indicates I’m going to add some interactivity to the chart. I would like to hide/display specific squares on the chart depending on their category.

What is the point? - You may ask. Well, I’m looking for patterns on the SVG that can help me find characteristics in StackOverflow’s usage.

Are there specific days with outstanding values? Which year has the most active days?

Let the investigation begin.

D3.js Data Binding

Now, to get these answers, we need to visit the topic of data binding first. D3 is not only a DOM manipulation library but also has a data binding mechanism underneath.

This is how it works:

Whenever I assign a datum() or data() to a specific element, I have the opportunity to define a key function as a second parameter. This function can help to find a specific piece of data with a specific HTML/SVG element.

I create a toggle function that handles whenever the user clicks on one of the range values.

I add this function to the legend group by calling .on('click', toggle).

First I mark if the selected legend is selected or not. Based on this boolean value, I can change the color of the assigned rectangles.

What is more interesting in this example is how the data binding and update work. First, I subselect values that fit in the clicked range into the highlightedDates variable. Then, I pass it in the .data(d => d.values, d => d.date) function.

Notice the second parameter. This is the key function that helps d3 decide which element it should update. All elements that are appended based on data have a __data__ property that holds the assigned value. The key function identifies the one matching and I can decide whether to execute update, enter or exit operations. I’m going to change the attributes of the elements so I’m using the update operation.

I’m not gonna write about enter or exit now but if you want to know more, read this great article by Mike Bostock, the creator of d3.

Back to the code example.

On user click, I filter all the data within the range and look for all the elements that match the data based on the key function. Then, I update their attribute by calling the transition() function and delay it by 500 milliseconds. Finally, I set the color by calling the colorFn or if not selected set it white.

Understanding our Calendar Heatmap

Once we have finished that we can have a look at all the historical data in the past 10 years and decide whether StackOverflow is still as beloved as a few years ago.

I’m interested in the peak usage of the site, so I just start hiding the days starting with the lowest range.

By hiding all daily post counts that are under ~10800 we get a clear result.

2013, 2014 and parts of 2015 and 2016 have the most answered questions on the site. So the community was the most active in these years.

It’s interesting to see that by hiding the ranges one by one, 2010 is the first one to disappear. It is one of the early years of StackOverflow as the site was created in 2008. Its popularity skyrocketed and reached its peak usage in 2013-14. Since then, there’s a slight decrease.

This does not necessarily mean the end of an era just yet. A possible reason for this downturn is that commonly occurring problems are all answered. StackOverflow is still the number one place to go when you’re bumping your head into the keyboard.

Also, not a surprise but Saturdays and Sundays are the most inactive days. However, the past years got my attention. Mondays and Fridays got lazy.

Enough of silly me, I’m just making assumptions on a green field.

Jokes aside, building a calendar heatmap is a really effective way to analyze a time series of data. My guesses might be incorrect but I just wanted to show you a few examples that can be extracted with very little effort supported with a spectacular visual experience.

Conclusions of building our D3.js Calendar Heatmap

In this tutorial, I introduced you a use case for calendar heatmap and investigated the daily usage of StackOverflow based on the daily posted answers.

We have gone through the steps to prepare the input data, created the chart with D3 and done some deductions based on the result.

BACKGROUND AND CHARACTER

It was all decided for her.

When her mother took her at barely six months and moved with her pagan collective to Alonissos in the Sporades to be one with nature and worship in her own way, it was all Alter knew. She was happy growing up among the mothers and daughters of Alonissos, among the magical creatures and the various wildlife of Greece. The magic they did through rituals and understanding, the education, all of it was intense, but also highly supportive.

And then the representatives came.

Israel is still located in something of an active area, the result of numerous magical conflicts, mythology, and traditions that spread out from the cradle of civilization. At eighteen, all eligible birth citizens are required to do at least one year’s service with the Wards, a defensive unit designed to protect the nation from the numerous human and otherwise magical threats. As several of Mater Meira’s adherents were originally from there, their daughters had come of age and were to serve their time in the Wards. They could resist, but that would mean a standoff and an incident with the wizarding government of Israel. So Alter and the other daughters left their land for their “homeland” and an uncertain fate.

It was odd, her tour. Alter and her “sisters” had never been so close to dark magic, and the intense environment tended to warp things, to say nothing of the near-constant culture shock both from a new home and significantly different demographics from the all-woman island. With her advanced aptitude, Alter managed to transfer from active duty to combat instruction, training Wards for their field missions and active defense rather than being on the lines themselves, but after an incident involving an uncontained dybbuk left her base short-staffed and Alter and her students having to buy time until help arrived, she was transferred back into defense operations. Out of a desire to care for her squadmates and defend her current home, she ran two years on city defense, pushing herself further into danger so those with her would be less affected. It had a profound effect on her both physically and mentally, and at the end of it, she counted down the days and left.

With a desire for anywhere else, Alter traveled around and learned what she could as she went, backpacking her way north through Asia, into Russia, and then west into Europe, never settling down, never quite figuring things out until, after a year or two of travel, she reached England. She was out of money and didn’t have many friends, just an odd command of the language and her magical talents, but with the world still reeling from encroaching darkness, she wanted to help where she’d be most useful, got a work visa, and took the civil service exam for the Ministry.

Halfway through the exam, she was removed when a background check pulled up her Wards service. She was instead brought in front of the Aurors, interrogated for about six hours as to why she was in the country until they were sure she wasn’t a spy, and offered a choice: Immediate deportation, or a chance to work with the Ministry and correct some of the numerous pockets of dark magic that had gone wrong. With no other options, Alter accepted, was issued full immigration status under the name “Ingrid Meyer,” and was sent to train with a squad of four other wizards to become a Hit Wizard.

For years, that was her life. She had a normal life, hung out with work colleagues, and was bright and effervescent as can be, committed to living life to the fullest every step of the way outside of work. When they were on assignment, though, two things happened:

First, no matter what, if any of the other four ran into trouble, Alter would immediately put herself between them and whatever it was. Didn’t matter if it was horrifying fungus, curses, or anything, on assignment Alter considered her squad under her wing and you did not mess with anyone she cared for. The second thing was that she was oddly able to turn herself off. She almost became another person, like someone flipped a switch, able to do absolutely anything and everything to get the job done. It was honestly a bit scary, even to the ministers above her, and some even quietly whispered that they were sending her team on more dangerous assignments in the hopes that she might be rotated out.

And it was her last assignment, of course, that would prove the straw that broke the camel’s back. It was supposed to be routine, a simple raid on a small agrarian island, round up the blood cultists and off to Azkaban, but someone was tipped off, and someone knew her hit squad’s playbook, right down to Alter. It turned into first a hostage situation and then an all-out siege, a massive and unpleasant skirmish through the dark woods with no way off the island. The strength of curses and dark magic warped the land itself, and at the end while the cultists were finally defeated, it was at great cost to the Ministry.

Alter, of course, was immediately taken off of active service and given a full exam from St. Mungo’s. There were some odd issues (she’s never been able to deal with intoxicants quite the same way, as they have a much more pronounced effect on her), and she’d inexplicably grown larger somehow, but apart from that, there wasn’t anything too distressing, apart from, again, the odd way she was suddenly able to switch herself off and on. Still, they didn’t feel good putting her back on active service, and instead offered her early retirement and a land and title in Scotland out of bravery and service. Alter, without many other options, accepted.

And finally, she felt free. She changed her name back to the one she preferred, keeping “Ingrid” as a middle name to explain why people called her that, and accepted her retirement graciously. Alter set about fixing things up on the estate, stocking it with magical creatures and regular creatures alike, also developing part of the land so she could raise cows and sheep. Without the need to switch off, she seemed much more at peace, entertaining guests, being her bright and odd self, babbling constantly and treating every guest like they were her best friend and family. She also adopted a much different aesthetic, attiring herself more to her claimed home’s vast countryside and incorporating older styles, things she’d seen in books, and generally what she could find as “country attire.“

Through the end of her service and retirement, she’d had more than a few people show interest in her, though for a while she’d managed to completely confound several people by, when asked if she’d like to come back to their place, smiling politely and asking, ”…why?“ She had her fill of nights where she wasn’t lonely, of course, a few men and even more women, but nothing particularly stuck. But one person stuck out above all the rest. With her, Alter never felt like she had to be anything, like she had to do anything other than what the two of them wanted. She was the last person Alter told before leaving for the fateful island, the first person Alter told she was okay when she got back, a constant guest at the country manor where Alter kept her estate, using occasional hunting and fishing to stave off the darker urges and always on the list at every party.

But while the two connected on some level, they stayed apart, Alter never wanting to infect her closest friend and confidante with the odd distance, with that darkness. But one day, about a year or two after Alter took her title, her friend confided something: First, that she’d been proposed to but she didn’t want to accept, and second, that she felt some odd ties and weight to Alter. Alter agreed, and the two decided that a month or two would be enough space to figure things out. Finally, after two months, Alter took a rather odd step. Rather than apparating, she flew her hunting hipogriff to her friend’s house in her shooting clothes and, once let inside, offered a proposition: She was an eccentric, but that worked, and she would love for the two of them to be eccentric together, but wouldn’t push it. If the eccentricity was too much, she’d leave her friend space and the two of them could go back to what they had.

In a scene that’s become a major joke and a minor source of embarrassment for Alter, the two rode off back to Alter’s manse and agreed they’d rather be eccentric together than apart. Arrangements were made for a small elopement and a civil partnership a few weeks later, and while her friend’s family did sort of disapprove of her marrying a wild and eccentric immigrant, Alter’s demeanor and stature was enough to convince them it wasn’t a mutable statement. The two resumed reading to each other nightly, gardening, practicing duels, enjoying their lands, and life in general

This peace lasted until, with the resurgence of magic, another representative came to Alter’s home. This one she sent packing, and the next two, but the fourth from the Ministry wasn’t asking. They needed her back, as there was a possibility that the recent statute breaches had dark origins. Alter agreed to join, but it caused numerous arguments between herself and her spouse, as well as worry that Alter would be thrown back into danger headfirst. But Alter knows danger always comes sooner or later, and she wants to stop it before it gets to those she cares for.

Connections: - Alter’s spouse, the two of them live on a manse in Scotland in Alter’s barony and enjoy being eccentric nobility together, I’m leaving a lot of it open other than their marriage, that they’re relatively non-toxic with each other, and the broken engagement.

- Ministers and investigative aurors as well as other hit witches and wizards who would remember Alter from her time in the Ministry and probably have a great many thoughts about her reactivation.

Future plot ideas: Alter’s "dark side” getting a little out of control, tensions between her home life and her job at the ministry, her past catching up with her, intrigue with dark wizards, a family reunion of some sort.

Eastern’s First Female Fulbright Student: Emily Cole ’17

Graduation is a huge step. Like many seniors, Emily Cole ’17 had a bunch of ideas about what she might do. Never one to settle for the ordinary, Cole decided to try for something really big.

With the encouragement of her Eastern professors, she decided to pursue an opportunity that would combine her passions. She had heard Dr. Anne Francois give a presentation on Fulbright Scholarships in her sophomore year. Cole was immediately intrigued. Following her study abroad experience in Seville, Spain, Cole returned home and started the process of applying for the prestigious award.

Over the next three or four months, the senior Political Science and Spanish double major worked through the process of applying through the U.S. State Department to work with university students studying English in Ecuador. Cole received confirmation in late March that she was one of four U.S. students selected for a Fulbright award in that country.

In receiving the grant, Cole joins an illustrious list of local and national leaders who have received the award since the program’s inception in 1946. Her notification about the award included the following encouragement from the Scholarship Board:

The Fulbright Board places its confidence in you to fulfill Senator Fulbright’s goal to develop international understanding. This effort depends on a commitment from Fulbright grantees to establish open communication and long-term cooperative relationships. As a Fulbright recipient and a representative of the United States, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with international partners in educational, political, cultural, economic, and scientific fields. We hope you will engage directly as well in your local community throughout your Fulbright exchange. In so doing, you will exemplify the qualities of service, leadership, and excellence that have been hallmarks of this Program for 70 years.

Cole’s full intention is to interact with her local community.

Much of her passion for Spanish emerged after she traveled to Honduras with her church/family in high school. While there, she and her sister saw children in need and noticed that many of them did not have shoes. The two girls decided to act on what they saw and started a non-profit with the intention of providing shoes for children in Honduras. Honduran Soles, now in its fifth year, as provided more than 12,000 pairs of shoes to people in 16 countries around the globe. The intention of the organization is bigger than just responding to physical need. They look to distribute their shoes with mission teams that are traveling to places of need. This is not only cost-effective, but with each pair of shoes, the message of the Gospel comes to children and families.

In 2014, Cole and her soccer teammates traveled to Zambia. While in Africa, she realized the value of sport for girls around the world. The team did soccer clinics for boys and girls. As she interacted with the girls, she saw them thrive on the encouragement and saw them advance in skills and confidence in a short time. “I remember working with groups of kids in Macha,” she shared. “We had set up stations for skills and each time the kids rotated to our station, they had such joy. Even though we did not speak their language, soccer transcended that gap.”

In developing countries, that confidence can make all the difference as women seek to gain financial and personal autonomy in a culture that has historic roots of misogynistic tendencies. As she looked at the prevalence of violence and harassment of women in Ecuador, she realized that there was the potential to do good with her love for the game.

In her purpose statement in the Fulbright application, she wrote:

As a female athlete, I know the value and confidence soccer has given me throughout my life: strength, endurance, mental toughness and unmatched joy. I hope to instill these same attributes in the young women of the Ecuadorian community where I am placed, helping them to feel confident in who they are and what they can be. I should like to work with community leaders to develop soccer teams or a training clinic for young girls.

While at Eastern, Cole was more than just a player. She missed much of her first season with injury, but turned into Eastern’s top goal-scoring threat in each of her final three seasons. She finished her career with 49 goals.

She earned All-MAC Freedom honors as a forward three times and was recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-American in her senior season. She is the second Academic All-American in the history of Eastern Athletics.

Twice she was names as the Academic All-Area Women’s Soccer Player of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Sports Information Directors Association. That award for academic and athletic excellence is presented to the top performer from all the four-year colleges and universities in the Philadelphia Area. She scored 36 goals in her final two seasons for the Eagles and was named MAC Freedom Co-Offensive Player of the Year in her junior campaign. Soccer is a common theme in the Cole household. Her older brother and sister played through high school, and her two younger brothers will play together this fall at Messiah College.

When she was looking for a college, Cole wanted to look at Christian schools where she could play and not be too far from home. She had torn her ACL in her junior year and for a while was unsure if she would play in college. “I met with Coach Mouw,” Cole said. “And I knew that I loved what I saw when I visited the campus. When he called and offered me a spot, I knew Eastern was where I was supposed to be. It is cool to see how God works and knows what is best for us.”

Cole found that she really loved to study when she got to Eastern. She enjoyed so many things that it caused a little problem. She excelled in all her classes, but at the end of her sophomore year, she had to declare a major. “I remember laying on the floor of my room in Eagle Hall and was in tears trying to figure out where I wanted to go. My roommates still give me grief about this all the time. They were nursing majors and had it all figured out.”

In the end, she felt that a political science degree would help her to work toward a career that could pursue justice. She is still looking at law school in the future, but she valued her time as a political science student because she was able to learn about people, study international relations, and to integrate her passion for Spanish language and culture. She originally intended to minor in Spanish, but she could not ignore her passion to learn and grow in that discipline.

In her Spanish classes, the original seed of the idea to pursue a Fulbright was nurtured. Dr. Julia Stewart, who was awarded a Fulbright to Mexico as a professor, encouraged Cole through the arduous application process. Cole cites Stewart’s encouragement as a reason she as able to persist and she attaches tremendous value to the wisdom Stewart provided in the application process. “She helped me so much,” Cole said. “Even little things like avoiding cliches or finding the right things to highlight about myself helped. I am so grateful for her encouragement. There were times where I thought I had no shot, and she just kept telling me that I was a great candidate and to be confident in that.”

Cole knew she wanted to go to Latin America. The interest began with her trip in high school, but she cites her classes in Latin American literature and a political history of Latin America as points where she knew that she wanted to go and study more. “I really liked the English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program I will be pursuing in Ecuador. In the program I will be working with university students. I was attracted to it because it allowed me to be a native presence in helping students who are learning a second language. For the person learning a second language, the ETA is huge.”

Alondra Cervantes ’19, her teammate and friend, has served in that role for Cole. The two live in a Gallup Apartment with teammates Lydia Peachey ’17 and Hannah Bomberger ’17. Cervantes is a native speaker who encourages Cole in her language development. “Lon and I will be speaking in Spanish in the apartment, and the nurses will tell us to be quiet. Lon will correct me- if I ask her to- and she gives me the confidence that I am progressing. I want to do that for students who are learning English.”

Cole also noted that the Ecuador program would give her the opportunity to use soccer with the teaching program. The Fulbright programs requires applicants to propose a community outreach component. For Cole, this was the easy and exciting part. While in Ecuador, she is expected to be a cultural ambassador for the United States. She is looking forward to this, but she is also understands that as much as she is an ambassador for the U.S., she is also going to share her love for people that comes from her commitment to Christ.

Cole hopes that through her experience more Eastern students will apply and receive the grant. “Eastern has equipped us,” she concluded. “I think sometimes we think that coming out of a smaller school means that we cannot compete, but I know that I am prepared. I am grateful for the investment of my professors as educators and more importantly as people.”

She noted that has has friends at bigger schools that barely know or even dislike their professors, but added that Dr. Sharon Gramby-Sobukwe, Dr. Elvira Ramirez, Dr. Christopher Butynskyi ’01, Dr. Stewart and others have taken the time to really know her and to inspire her to love learning and to find her passions.

After her Fulbright ends, Cole will again be looking for the next thing. Wherever she winds up, whether it is in law school or in another language-based program, she knows that she will continue to seek to glorify God as she grows in her faith, increases her learning and pursues justice in the world around her.

Part Three

Life goes on

About six month later, mum has settled into the home, there was a blip with more illness and an undiagnosed disease, a companion to another disease. More hospitalisations, serious stuff we were dealing with.

Then there was a big blip culminating in a diagnosis of Uterine Cancer, which came out of the blue, about three weeks before I was to leave my job, my career for a sabbatical, as some said, or unemployment as others did.

So now, on a very wet and wintery July day in Sydney, I am sitting in the hospital coffee shop at 12.28pm, I wait and type whilst mum undergoes a bilateral hysterectomy under the stewardship of a very sweet and learned Gyno-Oncologist. With all her sweetness and grace, mum was up and waiting at 6am for my brother to drive her to the hospital where I waited, anxious and wishing and hoping that this would be the last. When we found out she was cancerous, she looked at me and said, why do things always happen to me? Responding, I said, because you can handle it. She smiled and said yes, yes I can. And that is how we proceeded. Yes, we can handle.

But before all this, and after the little blip, she was settling and mellowed into the routine of the nursing home albeit reluctantly on those days when she refused to shower, telling who ever was on duty, I will shower when I feel like it. She takes her pills, which on last count tallied around 15 a day, ate her food, drank copious cups of black tea and befriended a man called Peter who would sit next to her on the sofa and on occasion they held hands. He has a wife, who lives on the outside and he knows that he has a wife, but has found a kindred sprit in mum, as they share a similar humour and still have enough sense to chat and laugh about the day.

Her home, with all the visitors, as my sister in law describes it, is lovely. Finding the right one was not lovely. Of all the decisions that had to be made this was the hardest. Basically, the 12 year old social worker at the hospital gave me a book that listed all the nursing homes in NSW. It was rather weighty. She did not help, or made recommendations. She could not, as she had no life experience to draw upon to help me. So I took charge, decided it needed to be half way between my brothers work (he works shifts so it would be easier) and me, and I had to choose the right place.

I visited a couple that I wouldn't put a dog in. Then I found it. It was small, clean, the buildings were about 5 years old, but had been established for over 30 years. The Director of Nursing was interested in mum and that was it, their first thought was for the people. Paperwork completed, mum moved with the least amount of tears.

The staff are genuine and caring and represent of the colours of the world, along with the colours of the rainbow. There is the transgender who arrived late for work one afternoon dressed in a flowing long dress, silver high heels with a sequinned cardigan draped over her shoulders, running through the front door towards the bundy clock, hoping not to be late for work and nobody batting an eyelid, is the place for mum. Colourful, real and accepting.

Mum shares a room with another woman who is wheelchair bound. Bicycles or prams as mum calls them. Her words continue to jumble. Look at all the bicycles in this room. Aunty Liz or mum, as my mum sometimes calls her, (again the jumbling of worlds and people) makes no sense but she loves mum, and mum loves her. They hold hands and sit with each other watching movies, not remembering the plot but appreciating the colour and movement on the screen. Aunty Liz is Eastern European and most of the time speaks her own language, and even though she can speak fluent English and mum can't understand a word of what she says, mum bats her eyelids and says yes, that is right.

On the evening before mum's surgery Aunty Liz looked up from her bed and said to mum, "don't worry I will look after you." I stopped in my tracks, and thought it can't get any more fucking profound than that.

Movies are a big part of the entertainment circuit. The massive Kogan TV seems to be on 24/7, with DVD's of Andre Rieu on high rotation. They love him and having sat through most of them, I must say he is pretty bloody good. They sing along and dance and conduct their way through the concerts, and mum who had learnt classical violin sits fingering notes, whether they are actual notes, I have no clue. I was caught off guard one day when I arrived to see mum with another lady bent over her four wheel drive (walker) dancing to the blue danube. Spectacular.

Some months later this same woman slapped me in the face so hard that it stung for hours. I had transgressed, no one knows why, only dancing queen knew, and this is the reality of dementia. I think of them living never ending lives, locked in their own thoughts and memories, recalling the minutest of detail from 50, 60 years ago, but yet not remembering if they had eaten lunch.

These grandmothers and grandfathers having lived full and eventful lives now living and sharing quite and peaceful lives. These little Benjamin Buttons live their little lives with great love, humanity and civility, these 63 souls could teach the world how diversity works.

Amongst in this little community is Meow Meow, who meows like a cat so purely and clearly, that one day Peter and I looked at one another and said in unison to each other, "did you hear a cat?" No one know whys she does it, but she does. In a different environment she would be considered a performance artist. She scolded me once for laughing too much, seconds later as I moved so not to annoy her, she thanked me for visiting.

Hello Hello, is a favourite. He was a clinical staff specialist at a major teaching hospital and sits in his easy chair for most of the day. Between Hello, Hello is a piano and on the other side of the piano is John who sits in another easy chair, reading the paper. Towards the end of each day Hello Hello, will repeats out loud, "hello, hello. hello", "shut up, shut up, shut up" says John. It is hilarious the old guys from the muppets living here, in Strathfield.

Another resident, Major Silver hair. An elegant woman in her mid 90s who was code breaker for the Army during the second world war. Her intellect is still evident and although obviously suffering from memory loss, she still has her wits about her. She also loves conducting Andre in his concerts, and is convinced that the raised garden bed where camellias grow is going to be turned into a swimming pool. Not a big one, but one just the same. She told me this one afternoon, she came up and greeted me with her usual hello darling and asked if I had children. Replying in the negative she continued explaining that you know there are little kiddies that visit here, interjecting I said well we could throw them in. She laughed and wandered off with her four wheel drive.

There is much humour in this little community of people who have been thrown together for no other reason or circumstance than age or illness. The majority of the staff are brilliant. They are funny, caring and determined to make the facility friendly, warm and welcoming.

There are some who I would like to throw against the wall with my forearm against their throat and shout, do your job you lazy arse. But like all workplaces there are slackers and time wasters and those who really should look for a different calling. They know I have sized them up, there exists an unwritten detente between us. They don't fuck with mum and I will not fuck with them.

There is also death. At least half a dozen residents have died since mum has been there. The most sad was Peter, who very suddenly one Tuesday night passed away. We had talked a little after dinner. I always asked how are you, and he would respond oh not too bad for a little old man. He said his goodnights and tottered off to his room. A little later as I was leaving, he walked out of his room at the end of long corridor and walked into the bathroom, he stopped turned and waved to me, I waved back and left. On my next visit I learned that he had died. Very suddenly of heart failure. It was heartbreaking, all us visitors talked about it, saying how lovely and sweet he was. All I could think of was god bless you Peter, you gentle gentleman who had never flown in a plane.

Part Four

Oh, and how are you doing?

So how are you doing? Is what I get asked the most. I smile and say OK. And, continue with my day. Bullshit I'm OK. But, to those who are not familiar, OK is the standard response.

It has been three months since the surgery and three months since I walked away from work. Having been with the organisation for 20 years, with the last ten years doing the job that I could not have dreamed of it was so beautifully challenging, rewarding and perfect. But, it had changed, the restructuring had taken its toll on my sensibilities, I had no mental stamina left, I was devoid of self motivation and the personal politics of some of my peers and colleagues left me tainted. My job, my delicious job, had withered into something that was unrecognisable, outsourced and over engineered by the consultants. It was becoming a standard that I was not willing to walk by anymore.

I hated it, even the physical office, I hated it with its views of Sydney Harbour, meetings rooms named after Sydney suburbs and the gigantic corporate Nespresso machine, I hated it all, but kept coming in each day. I didn't hate my colleagues they were possibly the smartest and kindest group of people I had ever worked with. But, I am smart and had my exit plan, a few of us did. And, after what seemed like a year in purgatory a very nice redundancy package appeared, I pounced.

There is much that I have not written, how closing up mums house and sorting through her life. How the plastic leprechaun that I gave her after a trip to Ireland 20 years ago, made me weep more when I put in the the box for Vinnies, than giving my grandmothers bed away. A bed which I had inherited and slept in from the age of 18 to 43, until I returned it to mums spare room and slept on a few months ago. Nor have I written about how the cancer was identified. These events filled me with more fear than this whole past year. And, you know, some things can go unsaid. Put the baggage down and walk away. You know it is there but you don't have to stand by it, you can walk on.

The first two months were filled with surgery, medical appointments and all the in-betweens that come with cancer, old age and redundancy. I am still not working and my days are organised into segments, but there are days when I do nothing except watch daytime television and lay around. I breakfast, read the papers online, drink coffee, visit museums and see plays, take walks, go to the movies, (37 to be exact in a 12 month period) coffee with friends, visit mum three times a week, Piliates twice a week and some times comedy gigs, consume Facebook, and live, I live and still cry and declare numerous times a week that I must get a job. I obsess and I feel friends worry I take note when they advise that you can't stop your life because of your mum.

I am decompressing, adjusting, being mindful or mindless depending on the day, and think, oh how I think and what I think. I do all this whist feeling I have a hand wrapped around my solar plexus. the clench is slight, but it is there all the time. Sometimes, I don't feel it but I always recognise it. It is there 24/7. get anxious about the slightest of things, I dither and wander from room to room, cry doing the washing up, when I see film of baby koalas in wicker baskets on Facebook.

So, that is it, the weight of loss is a dire thing, and yes, I work very hard not let it consume or rule me, as no one likes being told what to do…
