Talk about the animation quality of a show all y’all want, m’kay, but personally, if the voice acting ain’t good, I can’t get immersed.
And these passionate gentlemen (and more), thanks to Wally Burr’s direction, goddamn SERVED.
I’m convinced the amount of effort they put into voicing their characters is (a good chunk of) the reason(s) why Transformers got so popular and beloved in the first place, and why the franchise remains as popular and beloved even 40 years down the line.
Absolute legends.

For why Optimus sounds a bit older than what you'd have liked in Transformers One, do you think it comes from the need to constantly mimic Peter Cullen's take (who definitely has gotten older and sounded more aged in the last 20 years)? Especially since it is said Peter Cullen himself was a consultant in helping with Chris Hemsworth's performance as Optimus. Do you think Chris could've been more younger sounding if he didn't feel the need to be closer to Peter Cullen?
Yes, and I really wish Hasbro would stop mandating the majority of modern Optimus voice actors to try and ape Peter Cullen.
They can give much more genuine and sincere performances if they just focus on delivering the essence of who Optimus is, rather than an 80s idea of what he sounds like on the surface level.
And yeah, I feel with less restrictions / consultation, Chris Hemsworth would have just used his normal tone for Optimus, which would have still fit.
The temp voice actor for Optimus from the deleted scene below is what I would have gone with for his voice in TF One.
(Same goes for Bumblebee's temp actor in that deleted scene too, honestly.)

HEAR ME OUT
Before I begin, let me make CLEAR I'm in agreement that I don't like AI in regards to art. It's a giant copyright nightmare.
Now that being said, James Earl Jones sold the rights to recreate his voice THROUGH AI, after being told about Respeecher.
What does this have to do with Transformers?
You can probably guess: What if Peter does the same thing?
Look, I know we don't want to think about this, but Peter's in his 80s now and we don't know how long we have left. As is, he might be getting close to retiring Optimus altogether.
To be DOUBLY clear: I'm not referring to prequel stuff like Transformers One with a young Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. That obviously has room for others to step in. Chris Hemsworth proved he took it seriously.
But let's face it: if Chris hadn't made clear he was playing a young inexperienced Orion Pax/Optimus prime, you really think people would've bothered to see it?
No, I'm referring to the Optimus we know and love, the one that made us love him in the first place.
The one that's seen unimaginable horrors but still fights for the right of all sentient beings.
Because prequel stuff is one thing. It makes sense why it wouldn't be Peter.
But when it's not? That we need him for. And if Hasbro owns the exclusive rights to do that, we could still hear him long after.
Yes, ultimately it's up to Peter, but I'm asking WHAT IF he decided to go that route?

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to stepping into legendary roles. From wielding Mjolnir as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to navigating the wasteland in the Mad Max franchise, he’s consistently proven his ability to embody beloved characters. Now, Hemsworth adds another iconic name to his roster: Optimus Prime, in the highly-anticipated animated film, Transformers: One.
Even with his extensive experience, Hemsworth admits to initial nerves when Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura offered him the role. Optimus Prime, voiced for decades by the legendary Peter Cullen, is a character deeply ingrained in pop culture. However, upon learning that Transformers: One is a prequel exploring Optimus’s younger years, Hemsworth saw an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to the Autobot leader.
Transformers: One opens in theaters September 20th.

Honestly thing I think I was a little unsure of about Transformers One was like Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee just cause,
I mean i really haven't seen most of what he's been in - and I want to say if I have heard him in other VA roles he really just does use his normal voice -not necessarily a bad thing just off hand I don't think I've heard him say do like other voices you know.
Also I'm sorry despite being an actor the thing I will ALWAYS associate with him the most is like that brief time when he hosted Planets Funniest Animals (who remembers THAT)
That said while he doesn't really try to do anything different for B's voice he doesn't do a bad job and certainly captures the energy the character has. I feel like I can say that like B does feel like his own actual character and not just B with Keegan's voice you know.

A GLIMPSE OF US
Jasper Hale x Reader
warnings: Bella, usual twilight warnings
Summary: Bella causes a stir when voicing her opinion on two vampires.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a quiet day in Forks. An even quieter one in the Cullen house. Rosalie and Emmett out shopping,Alice and Issy Painting, Esme and Carlisle quietly organising the book shelf. Then there was Jasper and Y/n lounging in the love seat in the garden, passively watching creatures scurry past.
“Do you remember when we met?” Y/n softly spoke as she looked up at her mate whose face broke into a wild smile. “I certainly do Darlin, 1940 I was staying with Peter and Charlotte after hearing about new ways. I was reading a news paper trying to control my thirst. Then along came the most angelic being i’d ever seen Y/n Marisol Cullen.” y/n laughed before her husband carried on. “You walked over to me, Said you could help with my situation. I felt this intense feeling of wholeness when you touched my arm. That’s when i knew.” Y/n began “I felt like i’d finally found the missing piece” Jasper held his wife tightly. “And long story short your stuck with me for all eternity Darlin” Y/n Relaxed into Jaspers chest. Relishing in the peace and quiet.
Suddenly Jasper tensed up causing Y/n to lift her body off his and follow hi u s gaze. That’s when the smell of Bella hit her. Rolling her eyes she sighed. “Here she is little miss Florida” Jasper half heartedly chuckled. He Began to open his mouth before a hand being slapped over it. Y/n motioning to shush.
“Are you sure they are actually in love?”
“Bella”
“I mean Jasper looks like he’s in so much pain”
“Jasper always looks like that”
“And Y/n she just looks so perfect and like everything she does is a calculated move”
“Bella”
“No Edward she’s always looking to check if someone’s watching”
“Bella can you hear yourself”
“I don’t think they love eachother Edward i really don’t”
“Bella drop it”
“No Edward, They don’t even seem to like being in eachothers presence. I never see them together”
“You never see them alone either”
Bella clearly forgetting about the heightened hearing the Vampires possessed. Began Slamming into her future In-laws.
Jaspers heart dropped. All he’d ever wanted was for people to know how much he loves his wife. Bella saying those things hurt the empath a lot. He quickly sped off with out saying a word.
“Jasper” Y/n shouted. “Jaz”
Y/n sighed deciding to give him his space before entering the house. She walked in seeing Alice and Issy. “I’m guessing you heard” Issy spoke first her English accent purring. “It’s not true” Alice reassured the vampire. “Alice i’m not stupid. I know but Jaspers took it hard he’s sped off somewhere” Y/n began to walk over to the two Vampires. “I told you Bella’s a jealous girl” Issy nudged her wife. “stop” Alice whispered.
“There you are” Edward smiled walking in with Bella. “I wanted to show Bella some of your paintings” he told the married couple. “Hey Alice,Issy,Y/n” Y/n didn’t respond instead she walked further into the room sitting on the sofa to ‘read’ a magazine.
“Why’d did you say those things?” Y/n closed her magazine. Bella froze. “I mean are you that unsatisfied by Yourself and Edward’s relationship that you start making troubling little fantasy’s about mine?” Y/n stared at the human.
“You wanna know what i found so funny about your little observations?” “hmm?” “You said i’m always looking over to check if someone’s watching, i am your right. But forgive me if this is left field but have you totally lost your mind and forgotten the fact we are literal blood sucking vampires? Oh and the fact that we could be exposed any second?” Edward began to intervene.
“Y/n come on you know she didn’t mean it”
“Really because she sounded pretty set”
“you have no idea what love is Bella, your 17 years old. You have no idea what lays await for you and love in the future” Y/n walked away.
“Jaspers left” Alice told Edward. “What?why?” Edward turned to his sister perplexed. “Edward, Jaspers trying really hard” Issy spoke. “He tries so hard everyday, He worships the ground Y/n walks on and what Bella said was abit of a kick in the teeth don’t you think?” Issy gave the human girl a small glare.
“Now i’ve got to go find my husband, Please refrain from upsetting anyone else Isabella” Y/n sped up the mountains searching for Jasper. She found him. Sitting on a Rock. Watching the horses a field away run around.
“Hey Jaz” Y/n said sitting next to him on the rock. “hi” he quietly spoke. “Wanna talk about it?” Jasper thought about refusing to but he couldn’t. “I don’t want you to think i don’t love you” Jasper sighed. “I love you so much it’s almost painful. You consume my mind, Your in everything i do. When i’m talking to other students at school i’m waiting for you to join because you would love the topic. When u go to the store and i see something i have to get it because it reminds me of you. I spent 80 years suffering until i met you and i can’t even show it” Y/n had never seen her husband so upset by a few words. “Jazzy” she played with bits of his hair “ i know you love me you idiot” Y/n let out a laugh. “So does everyone else, Just because Bella said some stupid things once again doesn’t mean anything” Jasper cracked a small smile. “She does have a habit of that huh?” Y/n grinned grabbing his hand. “Home?” Jasper nodded as they both sped off.
“Jasper im-“ Bella was cut off by Jasper stepping back. “I’d prefer it if you didn’t speak to me” Jasper said before moving up the stairs. “Someone’s rubbing off on him” Emmett chuckled. “He needed it” Y/n nudged the boy. “He’s defiantly whipped i’ll tell you that” Y/n rolled her eyes. “And your not?” Emmett held his hands up. “Hey how can i not be” Rosalie grinned. “Another reason to hate Bella Yay” Edward sent the three vampires a glare. “Don’t glare at me Edweirdo, Your the reason she even met us”
Esme and Carlisle listened to the whole altercation ‘Do you remember when they actually got along. Y/n and Edward?” Carlisle asks his beautiful wife. “No i don’t, i remember when Y/n and i quote ‘tolerated that street urchin” Carlisle sighed. “We were so young then” Esme laughed “it was this morning”.

Your colloquialisms are ruining the immersion (or, non-contemporary dialogue)
I am no expert here! Whenever I wrote historical fiction it was anachronistic historical fiction. This advice is from a reader’s perspective and from my experience writing high fantasy.
So what’s the deal with immersive dialogue? I’m going to ignore writing dialects and accents and so-called “old English” with the thee, thy, thou and such. Solely focusing here on the narrative telling me this isn’t set in present times, and yet the dialogue being painfully colloquial like present times.
This is coming from a book I had to read set in HRE times. In it, characters were spouting modern curse words, tacking on verbal tics and crutch words like “or something” and “um” and drawing out words like “daaaamn” and “nooooo”. Rip out the dialogue and toss it in a script with zero context and it would read like two high schoolers from 2009, not two adults from the Holy Roman Empire. Which is a problem, because it completely shattered the immersion. —
1. On so-called “formal writing”
Everybody knows that nixing contractions doesn’t do a damn thing to help your writing look more “formal”, it just looks robotic and stiff, right? We’ve gotten past this as a society? There’s a time and a place for replacing contractions with the full words, but not for every single sentence.
I swear this show keeps creeping into my writing advice but here we go. Transformers Prime. The context for Optimus’ dialogue has a lot to do with his aging voice actor, Peter Cullen, and the perception of the character over the decades from the corny 80s paragon hero everyman type leader to the grizzled and wizened old soul type leader. Optimus isn’t “one of the guys,” he’s old. Very old. He’s the dad of the group (one dad, his grumpy medic is the other dad).
So he gets lines like:
“I fear Megatron’s ambition is at its zenith.”
“But if his return is imminent as I fear, it could be a catastrophic.”
“I bore Skyquake no ill-will.”
He doesn’t curse like the other Autobots. His voice only raises in surprise, horror, or rage. He doesn’t go “um/ah/so/but/eh” and always thinks about what he’s going to say well before he says it. Despite him, Ratchet (the dad medic), and Megatron all being very old, Optimus is the only one who’s “proper” and collected and dignified with his lines. The writers didn’t achieve this simply by omitting contractions, he gets them where necessary and removes them when effective (e.g “We do not.” / “We don’t.”)
2. Thesaurus Rex
Continuing with the Optimus example, no other character in that show would use “zenith” unironically. Or “ill-will”. This doesn’t mean crack open and abuse a thesaurus but there’s a huge divide between:
“Megatron’s gone crazy and he’s going to implode soon” and “Megatron’s ambition is at its zenith”.
I can’ think of a better word to use than dignified, perhaps distinguished to describe his dialogue.
He doesn’t say “what?” when he’s confused, he pauses and says something like “please elaborate”.
This is both word choice and a syntax issue so if you’re struggling to fit a non-contemporary vibe for your work, pay attention to both.
3. When to abstain from cursing
There’s something very special about the dialogue in the Lord of the Rings movies: It’s PG-13 so they can’t curse, but if they had, it would have probably ruined the trilogy. These characters are able to yell in rage and anguish, spit vicious insults at their enemies, and stare down armies that are determined to kill them, all while never breaking the immersion.
Insults like:
“Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear.”
“Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth, you witless worm.”
“Your words are poison.”
And all three were said by or about Grima Wormtongue.
Characters aren’t dumbasses, they’re fools, with the exception of Gollum’s insults toward Sam, the “stupid, fat hobbit”.
Even devoid of name-calling, Denethor absolutely trounces his second son by asking (and I’m paraphrasing) “Is there any man here willing to do his lord’s bidding?” right after Faramir expresses some apprehension about a suicide charge with his remaining soldiers, completely ignoring him and implying that he’s not a real man.
LOTR is full of juicy lines beyond curse words, too. One of my absolute favorites is: “Dark have been my dreams of late” as opposed to “I’ve been having nightmares lately.”
Do you see?? It’s poetry. The motif of Shadow and Darkness as if they’re real, physical things, all the lines of poetry pulled straight from the books like Theoden’s “where is the horse and the rider” monologue just before Helm’s Deep.
It’s dignified.
This one was a bit harder to, ironically, put into words without doing a full-blown case study into either franchise’s ability to write dialogue and monologues. I didn’t even talk about Ratchet’s several monologues (one of which was done perfectly in the sound booth on the first take) because Jeffrey Combs has a voice like ambrosia.
TLDR: Immersion goes far beyond your vivid setting descriptors and the clothing or the names and languages. I mostly write fantasy and sci-fi and whenever I read or watch fantasy and sci-fi that isn’t meant to be a world different from our own, or about characters who don’t speak modern English, and they go off with modern slang, syntax, and verbal tics, it just feels sloppy and weak. Pay attention to the following:
Syntax
Modern slang and jargon
Filler words/verbal tics
Curse words/curses
Flat, unmotivated vocab
*All of the quotes were from memory because I watch both of these franchises way too often. So apologies if I got any wrong.

I Saw Transformers One Early Last Week. Let’s Talk About It!!! (SPOILER FREE)
EXPECTATIONS
I’m going to be honest, I had very very low expectations for this movie for a multitude of reasons. The first was the cast, particularly choosing celebrity hires instead of professional voice actors for a franchise where dialogue delivery means SO MUCH historically and the present. I like Chris Hemsworth, I do, but I am so attached to Orion Pax that I did NOT see him as someone fit for the role. I was also afraid of it becoming a WFC situation where the VA tries TOO HARD to be Peter Cullen. I am also a huge fan of Elita One, and Scarlett Johansson was not my first choice by any means. The one thing giving me hope was the fact that Scarlett and Chris interact SO WELL in their films together and in press releases and they do give off that Orion and Elita energy sometimes. Regardless, I was skeptical.
Now for the big thing: I was very nervous how they were going to handle the politics and the buildup that leads to Megatronus and Orion’s separation. It is no secret that Pre-War Cybertron in many continuities begins with a very corrupt and fascist Senate. Corrupted Senators, capitalistic manipulation and unethical abuse, dehumanization, corporal punishment, you name it, Cybertron had it. The concepts of functionalism, shadowplay, mnemosurgery, and empurata also come to mind. It is also no secret that the United States is on the brink of total fascism. A lot of Pre-War Cybertron’s themes, particularly the Decepticon cause in its early days as a movement, emphasized the elimination of the oppressive regime and reconstruction with an end to the very infrastructure that caused class division and brutalization of Cybertronian bodies. Not only this, but Megatronus and Orion’s schism often comes because of class, particularly privilege and lack thereof, which is something that often happens in revolution. Those with more privilege often think that reform can happen underneath the system that looms over them, just with a switching of a guard and elimination of a few policies. They are often ones who partook in and benefitted from the system by birth or for the sake of survival. Those who come from the lower classes want to burn the entire system down, understanding in its entirety that its very infrastructure is unstable and is not sustainable, no matter who is in power. Examples of this divide despite deep friendship and similar ideas is Andres Bonifacio and Jose Rizal of the Philippines (as a Filipino). Orion, in most cases coming from a privileged background, saw hope in simple reform after extracting the corrupt portions of the federal structure. Megatronus, who fought his whole life to be deemed as sentient, understood that the entire system was diseased and could not go on. It would just eventually continue its horrid practices. I can go on a tangent about this, as someone who studies and writes on anti-colonialism, but that’s another post for another day. My concern based on the trailers was that it would address NONE of that and there would be some watered down conflict that removed the nuances and political passion behind a lot of other continuities. The trailers, to me, were not giving me enough proof that it would be handled correctly.
Initial Experience
My theater was filled with mostly adults of various ages who were fans of different continuities. Some people were even talking about how they thought the movie was going to suck, including me with my dad, who has been a fan since G1 in the 80s and was going in blind. However, throughout the entire film, the whole theater was laughing, gasping, cheering, clapping, and screaming. Afterwards, there were people who were literally talking about how it was the movie they’d been waiting for after years of disappointment. Someone literally shouted when leaving the theater that he was so excited for September when everyone else could see it. My dad, who has not been a fan of recent Transformers material, talked nonstop about how much he loved it. Me personally, I was BRIMMING with excitement afterwards, which is huge given that I was ready to criticize the movie’s every move. Let me get into why- note this is SPOILER FREE.
Orion Pax
Believe it or not, I really liked TF1’s Orion. He was witty, had the snark of Aligned Orion, and clearly had a goal in mind: to entirely shift the status quo by breaking the class distinction. He was extremely optimistic like most versions, something that is often criticized in the fanbase, and is also criticized in the film. However, the qualities that G1 created and the Bayverse destroyed were THERE. Orion was a DORK. He was KIND. He CARED for people deeply, even if they weren’t necessarily thinking about him. He was a KNOWN PROBLEM-SOLVER. His intelligence is noted MULTIPLE times. He really is authentically Orion. I’ll do a more in-depth analysis in September.
Megatronus/ D-16
Now, THIS MAN WAS AMAZING. I am so used to the source of his anger being solely lower class-based oppression amongst other things relating to that. The film offered another option, which I will not disclose, but I thought it was a wonderful addition. I will keep my mouth shut about D-16’s personality in this film because it’s a secret, but just know this new take on Megatronus was a bit refreshing and gives new material for both fan continuity writers and fanfic writers.
Elita
I was honestly scared to see how they would portray Elita, especially with their track record of solely making her Optimus’s love interest and killing her off. I also was afraid that they would turn her into a white feminism caricature, which I can go into depth about for clarification if anyone needs it. However, the writers take feminism for Elita and take a much more in-depth route. I found her well done. She was giving mother in this film, absolutely brilliant. There will be an analysis on her as well in September, especially since they have so much intended room for her.
Worldbuilding and Additional Characters
I think that with about an hour and a half, it would have been SO HARD to create an entire world of deep political brutality and nuance like the comics directly. So, I think the writers created a framework that was good enough to convey the fascist undertones of Cybertron while also leaving so many avenues to explore and elaborate on for future films, whether they be prequels or sequels. Some characters were added in with a bit of context, but no in-depth explanations. While I would normally say that’s a downside, I think that it was actually really smart on their part. If you tried to add all of these complex stories from the comics in an hour and a half film combined with everything else, it would have likely been underdeveloped and left more questions and holes than answers. By removing that, I think that it was a smart move to expand on in their own time and with good pacing. Besides, the presence of some characters was very enjoyable and kept the audience I was with wanting more from them. Not in a “there wasn’t enough of them” way at all, but instead a “they were so cool in the short time they were here I need more now” way. Everyone in this continuity gets a new and different start. I honestly think it would give fan continuity writers motivation to continue what they’re doing, now that basic and consistent pre-war plot lines have been redone. I think for how long the movie is, they did a great job.
Additional Thoughts
I think that everything was pretty well done. The pacing was especially important, given we were supposed to witness a buildup in such a devastating “divorce”. That isn’t done lightly, and they made sure that they built it up enough to where the final blow was devastating. It was SO DEVASTATING that people in my theater were gasping left and right. The comedy was well done, as someone who hates poorly-written jokes for laughs. It fit into the characters’ personalities well, that’s what made it work well. It didn’t feel forced because that’s just how that particular character is. I also think that, as a fandom, sometimes we get too wrapped up in very specific characterizations of these individuals to the point where we refuse new ideas. I was extremely guilty of this. However, this film was truly made by someone that loved the franchise and knew exactly what the fans wanted. Brian Tyler, who did the score for TFP, also doing the score for this film was proof of that (as someone who absolutely ADORES film scores as a musician) There was a good amount of brutality within the rating of the film, so bayverse fans who are itching for something shockingly horrible are in for a surprise. I also think that it knew its boundaries well and moved not to push them while also being considerate of certain audiences who may be a bit younger. It was a good restart, especially for animated Transformers films, and I think that they can really build it into something great. This was a very sound foundation and I was not disappointed.
ALSO, THERE IS A MID AND POST-CREDIT SCENE SO DON’T LEAVE IMMEDIATELY

Transformers One In-Depth Review
Tumblr media
Transformers One is a must watch.
I’m tired of seeing a bad review go towards a movie that is actually extremely well done, especially if the reviewer hadn’t taken the time to watch it or considered the trailers enough content to draw a review from.
Seriously, it was so refreshing to see a new take on a franchise that has been around for years. In my personal opinion, it’s better than re-makes that offer even less room for creativity.
I am a huge Transformers fan. I grew up with Transformers Prime, and when I was older, I watched the movies. I’ve watched other shows here and there, and while I may not be a complete expert, I know the lore well enough to have been heavily, emotionally impacted by Transformers One.
I’ll start with the "non-spoiler take" followed by the "spoiler take” which will be “hidden” for those who do not want to be spoiled.
"Non-spoiler" take...
Peter Cullen’s voice is legendary. Chris Hemsworth himself acknowledged this in an interview, mentioning that the goal was to “re-create” and “do something new.” He intended to represent a “youthful, brash, and cocky version” of Orion Pax before he was known as Optimus Prime. This is a realistic representation. In Transformers Prime, Ratchet states that Optimus Prime was more like Jack in his youth. For those of you who don’t know, Jack is a strong-willed, selfless, but slightly impulsive teenager, as all teenagers should be. It is clear that Hemsworth has evaluated “hints” that other movies and shows have provided. Hemsworth wanted to “lean into” a more serious voice towards the end of Transformers One. He insisted “he wouldn’t dare mimic Peter Cullen.” I highly respect his choices, and he does not deserve the amount of hate thrown at him. Now, Orion Pax also comes across as a humble, soft-spoken character in other movies and shows. However, I can see why they would lean into his impulsiveness to better highlight and contrast the relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, especially as D-16’s true colors show. More about that in the “spoiler” section, though!
No, it would not have made sense for Orion Pax to have a deep, majestic voice. That comes with experience; that comes with hard decisions. Quite honestly, Hemsworth is pretty close to what I had imagined Orion Pax to sound like. It’s still slightly deep, and very soothing.
The character development in this movie? Oh. My. Word. Guys, as a writer, I can say that subtle character development – the best kind – is not easy to do. In Transformers One, it flowed naturally. It made me smile. It broke my heart. If you’ve seen other Transformers movies and shows, brace yourself. If you haven’t, still brace yourself. Again, more about that in the “spoiler” section.
The humor in the trailers has been re-posted so heavily I think it’s beginning to lose its effect and people, not knowing the context, are quick to judge. Yes, Bee is funny. It’s Bee. He’s supposed to be lovable, humorous, loyal, and powerful. I found no issue with most of the humor coming from him. There is more humor that is not mentioned in the trailers that is really worth chuckling over.
Finally, the fight scenes were clean, the animation was captivating, and the incredible Brian Tyler produced musical masterpieces for most every scene, some of it connecting to other movies and shows.
"Spoiler" take, now!
I expected to dislike Elita. Really, I did. I knew she was the “love interest” for Optimus Prime beforehand and expected big things from her, because Optimus Prime never struck me as having a “love interest” in the past. Not only that, but I expected her to be the female character I seem to find everywhere these days who strives to be better than everyone else without a lick of experience, complaining about the male figures in her life.
Elita, however, is ambitious. She leads. She doesn’t have to prove anything; she’s simply willing to work hard and do her job. Understandably, she gets upset with Orion Pax and the others when they interrupt her progress, though I can’t help but be amused by Orion Pax’s shy attempt to get her attention and adored his subtle acts of kindness. Sure, she’s a tad bit aggressive – she did punch Orion Pax, after all – but I really enjoyed seeing her adapt. When Orion Pax was feeling hopeless, she was there to encourage him. If she had stopped talking immediately after saying “I’m better” I would have been frustrated. Orion Pax and D-16 are the main characters in Transformers One, after all. She didn’t stop there, though. She highlighted the most important aspects of Orion Pax; his good heart, selflessness, and bravery. She told Shockwave and the others to shut up and listen to Orion Pax when they doubted his plan. She encouraged him to speak louder when others couldn’t hear him. She leaned towards the pit when Orion Pax fell.
Not only that, but Orion Pax was incredibly patient with her. He woke her up when she was unconscious and immediately took a punch to the face like a champ. He gently, subtlety smiled at her when they traveled to the surface and Elita announced "it's beautiful." He cried out her name and pushed her out of the way to save her during a battle. He listened to her. He told her to beat Arachnid “gently” when Elita managed to detain her, proving he fully understood Elita’s personality.
I’m sorry, but this kind of relationship takes the cake. If they’re meant to be a couple, I can see the signs. I love how well they work together and build each other up.
Bee is an icon. One of my favorite scenes is him eagerly saying to Orion Pax “I’m going to go cut these guys up, watch! CMERE!” It’s like a proud kid trying to get their parent to watch. I love how loyal he is to Orion Pax right off the bat.
While they changed some lore in Transformers One, they included everything that was important. Orion Pax and D-16 are miners, but it seems Orion Pax may have been a clerk beforehand. When he broke into the archives, he seemed to know where he was going. When he ran, I can’t remember exactly, but I believe he was muttering numbers? I don’t mind the small twists and can see how they were necessary for the story; key details are kept.
Jazz and Ratchet mention! I was so excited to hear their names. Kind of wish they had shown Ratchet, maybe shouting “I needed that!” to a fumbling worker. Sorry, Transformers Prime reference.
Arachnid had an incredible design.
Sentinel is a well-written, hate-worthy villain. I… did not expect D-16 to rip him in half, though.
Also… can I just mention how epic that particular scene was? The switch from D-16 reaching his peak character development – showing no mercy – while Orion Pax reached his – making the ultimate sacrifice to preserve life and do things the right way; receiving the Matrix of Leadership. The music, the animation, the slow-motion… everything was incredibly cinematic.
Obviously, D-16 took things too far. I appreciated the fact that he didn’t just wake up one day and decide to be evil. It took time. It took motivation. Obviously, any sane person would stand with Optimus Prime, though he does make mistakes from time to time, but it was incredibly neat to actually appreciate D-16’s insight in the beginning, then notice the shift and feel every bit of emotion Orion Pax felt.
People say the ending is rushed, or that D-16’s change came too abruptly without any good motivation. Sure, the ending may be a little rushed, but movies are typically structured this way. Falling action does not have a set speed; it just needs to be well done. Bad things happen in a rush, and this leaves ample opportunity for the “good guys” to react a little too slowly. As for D-16’s motivation… even a person can take their worship of an item or figure too far. Megatronus was someone to look up to in D-16’s eyes. He agreed to Orion Pax’s plans, or at least tolerated them, but his admiration for Megatronus was his own interest. Orion Pax threatened that vision. D-16 wanted to kill Sentinel to satisfy his own needs and desires, not to liberate others. Sentinel deserved death after committing murder, yes. He didn’t, however, deserve a public execution, especially as he tried to get away and was relatively defenseless. Remember, Sentinel told D-16 and Bee that he would execute them in front of everyone. We can acknowledge his promise as brutal, so shouldn't D-16's actions be considered brutal, too? No "reason" could ever justify it.
When D-16 let Orion Pax drop, he proved he no longer cared about loyalty. The least he could do was hoist Orion Pax’s body up or break down after losing what he once called his best friend, but he didn’t.
It’s ironic… D-16 said “I’m done saving you” when in reality, Orion Pax was trying to save D-16 from doing something he knew D-16 should have regretted doing. Normally, yes, D-16 is the voice of reason, but not in this case. For once, this is where Orion Pax’s true personality shines through. His spark – the spark of a Prime – is in the right place. Orion Pax puts joking aside when serious matters arise. It seems D-16 didn’t really know his friend after all. The actions D-16 committed, my friends, are not actions you want to celebrate.
I really, really hope Transformers One gains more attention. We need the sequel! Transformers fans, tell your friends. Give an honest review, which are of more value than the reviews given by those who didn’t take the time to watch it. Hype it up and roll out!

my personal favorite parts of "transformers one"
warning for MAJOR spoilers below!!! a theater near me was doing an early access screening, the movie is officially coming out september 20 in the us!
first off getting the obvious out of the way with Megatron and Optimus' friendship, obviously we know what happens but when a movie with a clear eventual villain that's been iconic for years makes me hope it retcons everything that has ever happened so two characters can remain friends???? their friendship was EVERYTHING to me
also very happy to see that Optimus is still such a nerd i love him
i did love the little subtle hints with Optimus and Megatron's differences from the start
Elita and Optimus' moments together were my FAVORITES
JAZZ!!!!! BELOVED BELOVED DARLING!!!!!! LOML!!!!!
AND RATCHET MENTION!!!!!!! DR. HATCHET MY BELOVED
I like that they didn't try to hide the fact that Sentinel was not a good guy. Like he was just so skeevy from the start, but they built it up in a way that still felt intense when his betrayal was revealed
Bee <3 he's so silly <3 favorite guy <3
Also the AA-Tron joke was 100% a reference to the A-A-Ron skit which had me cackling
The immediately big brother-little brother connection between Optimus and Bee?????? cries
ughhhhhh Megatron's shift from wanting to help Cybertron with Optimus to just wanting revenge
and Megatron's view being "one person controls everyone" and Optimus' being "all are one" IT'S SO GOOD
AND THE OPTIC COLOR SHIFT!!!!! OPTIMUS' ALWAYS BEING BLUE BUT MEGATRON'S STARTING AS YELLOW THEN SHIFTING TO ORANGE AFTER FIGHTING STARSCREAM THEN TURNING COMPLETELY RED WHEN HE LETS OPTIMUS GO I'M GOING TO LOSE MY MIND
Bee's excitement about the knife hands and Optimus being excited for him!!! They are siblings!!!
also a crime that i haven't mentioned Bee saying "Badassatron" multiple times every time it happened i just lost it
but also love love love transformers and their "someone will die" trope i was expecting the Optimus death 100% but it still was SO good
I also loved how Optimus' voice became more and more sterotypically "Optimus" as he went through his journey, like he started off very goofy and silly, then after getting his cog from Alpha Trion we start to hear more of how we're used to hearing Optimus, then after he's brought back by the Primes it's pretty much a very strong younger version of Peter Cullen's Optimus
the VAs were actually really impressive for the most part. I thought Chris Hemsworth did a fantastic job as Optimus, putting in just enough of a similar inflection as Peter Cullen's voice that it still felt like Optimus, just younger
Brian Tyree Henry DESTROYED me as Megatron, his vocal change through the movie???? emotionally devestating
Keegan Michael Key is one of my favorite Bumblebee voices tbh <3 especially considering we've only gotten a few iterations where Bee actually talks, so it worked for him since he could make it his own
absolutely 10/10 movie, i will be going back to see it next weekend when it's officially out because i'm obsessed

As we had previously reported, Peter Cullen received Emmy’s Lifetime Achievement Award last night during the 2nd Annual Children’s and Family Emmys.
In a very emotive ceremony, Megatron’s voice Frank Welker presented the award and Mr. Cullen gave us a great and touching speech.
“And now, a time to thank my many Transformers fans and friends…with all my heart. We…are one.”
A totally well-deserved honor to the iconic voice of Optimus Prime as well as a tribute to all Mr.Cullen’s career.
--
"Transformers and Optimus Prime have become legendary. And Peter's iconic performance has made him not only part of the culture, but the undisputed and irreplaceable leader of the Autobots.
But it's not just his talent or that magnificent voice that we recognize. It's who he is. His honesty, his loyalty, his passion for his work, care for his friends, and his deep respect for the audience.
That's what's brought him here tonight."

Book II - Chapter 3: Void
September 16, 2005
The air in Forks felt heavy. It had rained all morning, but now the skies were thick with clouds. Y/N sat on her bed, by the window in her room, her knees drawn to her chest as she stared out at the streets. Bella hadn’t come home after school, and Charlie’s tension had filled the house like a storm cloud.
Downstairs, the front door opened and slammed shut. Harry Clearwater’s voice drifted up, low but urgent, as he spoke to Charlie and a few officers who had gathered at the house to organize a search party.
Y/N clenched her fists, her chest tightening. She had seen Bella earlier that day, but something had felt… off. She had barely spoken, her eyes distant, her movements sluggish. When Y/N asked if she was okay, Bella had brushed it off with a forced smile. Now, that memory gnawed at her.
A knock at her bedroom door startled her.
“Y/N?” Charlie called. “Come outside, please.”
She hurried down the stairs after her uncle, her pulse racing. The front of the house was crowded with people, Harry, Officer Peter, and a couple of other deputies she didn’t recognize. Charlie stood, his face pale.
“What’s going on?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“We’re organizing a search party,” Charlie said, his tone calm but betraying his worry. “Bella didn’t come home, and her truck is still at school. No one’s seen her since.”
Y/N’s stomach twisted. “I… I saw her at school, but…” She trailed off, guilt washing over her. She should have pushed harder, should have made Bella talk to her.
Before Y/N could continue, a silhouette was exiting the forest.
Sam Uley stepped onto the street. In his arms was Bella, limp and unconscious, her face pale as death.
“Oh my God,” Y/N whispered, rushing forward.
Charlie’s face crumpled with relief and fear as he reached for his daughter. “Bella!”
“She’s alive,” Sam said quickly, his voice calm but firm. “I found her in the woods. I think she’s been out there for hours.”
Charlie took Bella from Sam, cradling her as if she might shatter. “What happened? Why was she in the woods?”
Sam shook his head. “She hasn’t said a word. I don’t think she even knows what’s going on.”
Y/N hovered nearby, her eyes darting between Bella’s still face and Charlie’s frantic movements as he carried her to the couch inside.
“Get a blanket,” Charlie ordered. “And call a doctor.”
Y/N hurried to grab a blanket from the closet, her hands trembling. When she returned, Bella’s eyes fluttered open, and she muttered something incoherent.
“It’s okay,” Charlie said softly, brushing her hair back. “You’re home now. You’re safe.”
But Bella’s expression remained vacant, her gaze fixed on some distant point beyond the room.
Later That Night
The house was quiet again. Bella had fallen asleep. Y/N retreated to her room, feeling an ache in her chest.
She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the amulet she had found under her wardrobe. The intricate design and the deep purple amethyst in the center seemed almost alive in the dim light. Without thinking, she slipped it over her head. The cool metal rested against her skin, and for a moment, she felt a strange sense of calm.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking her thoughts. She reached for it and frowned when she saw the name on the screen.
Carlisle.
She hesitated, then answered. “Hello?”
“Y/N.” Carlisle’s voice was as warm and steady as she remembered, but there was a hint of something else, like concern.
“Carlisle,” she said softly, her throat tightening.
“I wanted to check on you,” he said. “I heard about what happened with Bella.”
Y/N closed her eyes, the weight of the evening crashing over her. “She’s… okay. I think. She’s asleep now, but she was so pale, and she looked… empty. I’ve never seen her like that before.”
“I’m sorry,” Carlisle said gently. “I know how close you two are.”
Y/N swallowed hard. “It’s just… everything feels wrong. Bella’s not herself, and now you’re all gone too. It’s like everything’s falling apart.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and when Carlisle spoke again, his voice was softer. “If you ever need anything, Y/N, anything at all, you can call me. Day or night. I’ll answer.”
Her eyes burned with tears. “Thank you, Carlisle. That means a lot.”
“Take care of yourself,” he said. “And take care of your family.”
“I will.”
After they hung up, Y/N sat in silence, staring at her phone. The ache in her chest felt sharper now, but at least she wasn’t alone.
She lay back on her bed, the amulet warm against her skin. As her eyes drifted closed, she thought she heard a whisper, a soft, familiar voice speaking in a language she couldn’t understand.
But she was too tired to think about it.
Carlisle’s pov
Carlisle stared out the window of their flat in Vancouver, the phone still in his hand. The Cullens had left Forks just days ago, but it already felt like a lifetime.
He couldn’t shake the feeling of Y/N’s voice, her pain, her confusion. He had felt it too, it was a strange connection that went against logic. And yet, as soon as he tried to focus on it, the feeling slipped away once again, like sand through his fingers, and he was tired of not knowing why.
Esme appeared in the doorway, her expression soft. “Everything okay?”
Carlisle nodded, slipping the phone into his pocket. “Just checking in with a patient.”
Esme smiled, but something in her eyes seemed… watchful. Carlisle pushed the thought aside, forcing himself to smile back.
Still, as he gazed out at the moonlit forest, he couldn’t ignore the unease settling deep in his chest.
Something was wrong, and he would find out what.
October 2005
October crept into Forks with its biting chill, painting the small town in shades of orange, yellow and brown as the leaves began to fall. The Cullens had been gone for a month now, but their absence lingered like a ghost. The once-bustling corner of the cafeteria where they used to sit was empty, exceptionnel for Bella who sat there alone ereyday school day, and their grand house at the edge of the woods stood silent.
Bella had retreated into herself. She went to school, came home, and barely spoke a word. At the dinner table, she pushed food around her plate without eating much, her hollow eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Charlie had tried to get her to talk, but Bella’s responses were short, her voice monotone. Y/N watched her cousin with growing concern, but she didn’t know what to do.
Y/N, on the other hand, had thrown herself into research, her curiosity about the amulet and the Coven of Circe becoming an obsession. She wore the necklace constantly now.
One evening, as the rain pattered softly against the windows, Y/N sat on her bed with her laptop open, her fingers typing rapidly as she dug deeper into the history of the Coven of Circe. She had discovered that the coven was an ancient group of witches who had existed since the times of Ancient Greece. They were, for some of them, said to have descended from Circe herself, the sorceress who lived on the island of Aeaea.
The coven was rumored to possess great powers, control over the elements, the ability to talk to animals, and a multitude of others, but also a connection to forces older than time itself. The amulets, Y/N had learned, were symbols of the coven’s power. Every big family of the coven was said to have one, each stone unique and it also stated that they were passed from generation to generation, through the women.
But how had this necklace ended up under her wardrobe? She had never seen it before, and she sure didn’t pack it when she moved.
The thought gnawed at her, but before she could dive deeper into her research, there was a knock on her door.
“Y/N?” Charlie’s voice came from the other side.
“Come in.”
Charlie stepped in, his face lined with worry. He held a plate of food in one hand. “You didn’t come down for dinner. Thought you might be a bit hungry.”
Y/N gave him a small smile. “Thanks, Uncle Charlie. I just got caught up in something.”
He placed the plate on her desk, his eyes scanning the room before landing on her necklace. His brow furrowed.
“Where did you get that?” he asked, nodding toward the amulet.
Y/N’s hand instinctively went to the necklace, her fingers brushing against the cool metal. “I found it,” she said vaguely.
Charlie’s expression softened, but his eyes held a glimmer of something, recognition maybe? “You know… your mom used to wear one just like that.”
Y/N froze. “What?”
He nodded, leaning against the doorframe. “I remember seeing it when we were teens. I don’t exactly remember it, but it had a similar look. She always said it was a family heirloom.”
Y/N’s heart raced. “Did she ever say where it came from?”
Charlie shook his head. “Not that I remember. She was always kind of secretive about it. Your dad used to joke that it was something magic.” He chuckled softly at the memory, but Y/N’s mind was reeling.
“Do you think… do you think it could’ve been passed down to me?” she asked, her voice hesitant.
Charlie shrugged. “Maybe. Your mom was always a little… different. She had this way about her, like she knew things no one else did. I didn’t understand it then, and I still don’t now.”
Y/N stared at the amulet, her thoughts racing. Could her mom have been connected to the Coven of Circe? Was this necklace more than just an heirloom?
Charlie straightened up, giving her a warm smile. “Anyway, don’t stay up too late. School tomorrow.”
“I won’t,” Y/N promised, though her mind was already spinning with questions.
That night, the house was quiet. Bella’s door remained shut, as it had every night since the Cullens left. Y/N lay in bed, the amulet warm against her skin, her thoughts a tangled mess.
She thought about her mom, her soft smile, the way she always seemed to know when Y/N needed comfort or advice. She had been different, Y/N realized, but in a way that felt magical.
The whispers were there again, faint, like a breeze brushing past her ear. The ancient language, the one she couldn’t understand, sent shivers down her spine. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block it out, but the whispers seemed to grow louder, more insistent.
As sleep finally claimed her, Y/N dreamed of a woman standing under a massive oak, her hair blowing in the wind, the same amulet around her neck. The woman turned, her face shrouded in shadow, and whispered something Y/N couldn’t hear.
When Y/N woke the next morning, her bed was damp with sweat, and the amulet felt smehow heavier.
Over the next few days, Y/N tried to keep herself busy, but Bella’s presence, or lack thereof, was a constant reminder of everything that had changed.
Bella still barely spoke, her eyes dull and lifeless. Sometimes, Y/N heard her crying late at night, but when she tried to comfort her, Bella pushed her away.
Y/N wanted to help, but she didn’t know how. It was like Bella had built a wall around herself, and no one could get through.
One afternoon, while Y/N was alone in her room, she pulled out her laptop and opened a new search tab.
The Coven of Circe family connections.
As the search results loaded, Y/N’s mind churned with questions. Her mom had been connected to this somehow, she was sure of it. Maybe if she dug deep enough, she could find answers.
But as she scrolled through pages of information, her eyes landed on a passage that sent a chill down her spine:
The amulets are said to choose their bearer, passed down through generations of witches. It is a mark of power, a connection to the ancient magic that flows through their veins.
Was this why the whispers had started? Why she felt drawn to the amulet?
And if so… what did it mean for her?
As the rain continued to fall outside, Y/N leaned back on her bed, clutching the amulet tightly. The answers she sought were out there, but she had a feeling that finding them would change everything.
November 2005
The cold, damp air of November settled over Forks. The trees, now bare, stood like skeletons against the ever grey sky, and the ground was constantly slick with mud because of the incessant rain. Inside the Swan house, the atmosphere was no less dreary. Bella grew more and more withdrawn, her once-pale complexion now ghostly. She barely ate, spoke even less, and spent her nights tossing and screaming in her sleep.
Y/N had grown used to waking in the middle of the night to the sound of Bella’s screams. Each time, she would rush to her cousin’s room, only to find her curled in on herself, trembling. Bella never wanted comfort, and she refused to explain what the nightmares were about. Y/N would quietly retreat to her room, helpless but concerned.
As much as Y/N worried about Bella, she couldn’t ignore the strange things that had seemed to happen to her on a daily basis now. It began with small incidents, objects appearing where they shouldn’t be and when she needed it.
One morning, as she got ready for school, she thought about how much she wanted a chocolate bar. It was a fleeting thought, one she didn’t even pay much attention to. But when she turned to her desk, there it was: a perfectly wrapped chocolate bar sitting as if it had always been there.
At first, she thought Charlie might’ve left it for her, but he denied it when she asked.
Then there was the time she forgot her chemistry manual at home. She was panicking, she needed it for today lesson and, when she opened her locker, there it was, sitting neatly on top of her books, even though she was sure she left it on her bed that morning.
The incidents became more frequent as the days passed. A pen she thought she’d lost appeared in her pocket. A notebook she needed for an assignment was suddenly in her bag. It was as if the universe was bending to her will, but she didn’t see it happen, it just… did.
The strangest part of all was the cat.
It had started following her in late October. She first noticed it sitting at the edge of the school parking lot, its orange eyes fixed on her. Since then, it seemed to appear everywhere she went: perched on a fence outside her house, hiding in the bushes near the diner, even sitting on the windowsill of her bedroom late at night.
The black cat never came too close, always keeping its distance, but its presence was constant.
Vancouver - Carlisle
Far from Forks, Carlisle sat across from Alice and Jasper in a small café tucked into a quiet corner of Vancouver. The three of them had chosen this location for its privacy, a place where they could speak freely without fear of being overheard.
Alice was the first to break the silence. “It’s been weeks since we’ve seen you, Carlisle. What’s going on?”
Carlisle sighed, his hands folded on the table. “Something doesn’t feel right.”
Jasper raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“It’s Esme,” Carlisle admitted, his voice low. “She’s been… watching me. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s like she’s always aware of where I am and what I’m doing. I’ve noticed it more since we left Forks. She’s never been like this before.”
Alice tilted her head, her expression thoughtful. “Watching you? In what way?”
“She’s subtle,” Carlisle said, choosing his words carefully. “It’s not obvious. But I feel her eyes on me, even when she’s not in the room. And there are moments when I think about… things, about my feelings, and it’s as if they’re still snatched away before I can fully grasp them.”
Jasper exchanged a look with Alice. “Have you talked to her about it?”
“No,” Carlisle admitted. “I don’t want to accuse her of something without proof. But I can’t shake the feeling that something is off with her lately. It’s like there’s a fog in my mind whenever I try to think about certain things when she is around.”
Alice leaned forward, her golden eyes sharp. “Carlisle, you’ve always been the most rational among us. If you’re feeling this way, there’s a reason. But…” She hesitated, her gaze flickering. “If something was happening with Esme, wouldn’t I know?”
Jasper nodded in agreement. “And I haven’t felt anything from her. She’s as steady as ever.”
Carlisle frowned, his frustration evident. “That’s what worries me. If she’s hiding something, she’s doing it well.”
Alice and Jasper both fell silent, their expressions troubled.
Finally, Alice spoke again. “We’ll keep an eye on her from afar. But Carlisle… don’t jump to conclusions. Esme loves you. She is your mate. Maybe this is just… something we don’t understand yet.”
Carlisle nodded, though he wasn’t entirely convinced. “Thank you, both of you. I just needed to talk to someone about this.”
Vancouver - Esme
That night, as the house grew quiet, Esme sat alone in the living room, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She had overheard the conversation between Carlisle, Alice, and Jasper, at the café. Her enhanced senses picking up every word despite the distance when she had followed him.
Her act was slipping, and she knew it. Carlisle’s suspicion was growing, and if he continued to push, the others might start to notice as well.
Dominic’s voice echoed in her mind, his words a mixture of reassurance and warning: You must stay in control, Esme. They can’t know the truth. Not yet.
Esme closed her eyes, her grip tightening. She had come too far to let everything unravel now.
But as the hours ticked by, she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that her carefully constructed web of lies was beginning to fray.

I just need to let this out
Tumblr media
The new film, Transformers One, from what I've seen of spoilers taken straight from the theaters and what I've read up on Wikipedia, is a good show. It's got plot threads and characterizations taken across practically every medium of the franchise, and even utilizes the Transformers: Prime theme music twice in the film. It's honestly, all things considered, the best TF film since Age of Extinction in 2014.
But....The only one whose acting I actually enjoy is Brian Tyree Henry, the guy playing a young Megatron.
And that's great; he's a fan, and his love for the Transformers comes through crystal clear in his performance. I fully admit he doesn't tonally sound like Frank Welker's Megatron, but he sounds like Megatron: his vocal range hits every emotional beat you'd expect/are familiar with Megatron having in the various cartoons and comics, and he practically swallowed the source material and became Megatron, all while making use of verbal tics Frank Welker has employed for the character and making it his own while still being Megatron in his own right without stepping on what Frank Welker has done with Megatron.
And I love that. Heck, I 100% expected him to walk away from this production with all the awards, and he'd have earned them all in my eyes.
But....listening to Chris Hemsworth as Orion/Optimus....there's, there's a kind of lacking and restraint there.
Don't get me wrong, he's admitted to going to Peter Cullen himself for advice/guidance in playing Orion/Optimus and to make sure he doesn't goof up his portrayal of the character. But, there's not nearly as much range in his emotions as there is with Brian Tyree Henry. Maybe he's leaning into Orion/Optimus being the more controlled of the two, maybe he's leaning into the immaturity too much, or maybe he just feels like a bull in a china shop with all the pressure on him.
But...he could've done more. He could've - could've tried harder to be emotionally present, like Brian.
And I just - I just can't feel anything from his performance, save one line - and even then, that one line is, essentially, Orion's last words before dying and being reborn as Optimus Prime. I will give him this, he made me believe Orion was seconds away from death.
But everything else....there's not quite as much effort in it, most likely for fear of losing a balance between honoring Mr. Cullen's work and staying in his own lane. And when he speaks, it's....not that impactful.
There's not...how do I explain this....He just, he just doesn't have a vocal presence. He doesn't stand on his own in this movie; if anything, he sounds like a walking anomaly and just hearing him talk makes my suspension of disbelief for the movie shatter.
Scarlett Johanssen, I'm just gonna be blunt: she was a mistake to cast as Elita One.
Elita is one of my favorite females in Transformers of all time, and Johanssen - every time she speaks in this movie, my brain just registers the moody, teenage porcupine she voiced in Sing and Sing 2. She doesn't fit as Elita. There's too much youth in her voice (says something that she has the voice of a teenager), too much strictness/harshness, and not enough warmth and feminine strength in her voice like there was in G1. That's the whole point of Elita: she's the feminine counterpart that complements Optimus' masculinity.
And they took it from her. They took it, from me.
Yes, Elita doesn't have as much memory/love held to her as Optimus does, and I understand that people are gonna mischaracterize her. But that doesn't make it okay; it doesn't make it okay that she's modernized while having attempts at making her nice/still partially given feminine qualities to - this version of her.
And I hate how she fights in this movie. She moves like Black Widow - all slip 'n slide, using confusion and up-close-tactics with kick/leg-grappling-thing techniques.
Elita, in the original, from what we saw, was both a distance fighter (read: she shot a space gun), and capable of close quarters combat that was both feminine and practical. Heck, she was even more bad-aft than the movie portrays her: she literally caught a missile in her debut and threw it back at the Decepticons.
Why is a fighting style like THAT so hard to emulate?
Bumblebee, I don't care. His appeal has become lost on me for almost two, maybe years now. But dear Lord in Heaven, he is so annoying in TF One. No joke, Megatron would be in the rights for ripping his voice box out in this continuity.
That said....the guy doing him, somehow, manages to convey the seemingly eternal sugar rush this version is on. And he gets a small nod of approval from me for being physically active behind the mic in order to sell his performance.
(Despite that, something about the actor rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's that both he and Bee never shut up, I don't know. I do know that I never wanna be in the same room as him.)
Shockwave....is too emotive, but it gets a pass from me because so far as I can see, all his emoting in this film is a direct result from hearing Bee yap non-stop, including in an unconscious state. That's passable for me. A tic, yes, but passable.
Soundwave still sounds monotonous, but the ones in charge get an 'X' in my eyes for not getting Frank Welker back for the character.
Starscream is done interestingly, and although I don't yet know how to rank Steve Buscemi's delivery of the character's lines, I'll let Buscemi slide because he's had experience in voice acting - little bits, but the experience counts. I'll also let him slide because he returned to volunteer firefighter duty when 9/11 happened, and he stayed there all three days of search and rescue. So, while I can't rate his performance fully, he has my respect and I will not take on his portrayal negatively because of that.
Sentinel....I'll give the VA this, he pulls off the airy, self-aggrandising theatrics well. Beyond that, to be decided.
Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion....I'm not sold. His voice is too deep, and while I have many issues with George Takei, he did, indeed, nail Alpha Trion's performance post G1. Takei's experience, plus his voice, allows him to sell Trion as an old, yet still physically capable, former Prime whose wisdom is sound and collected from eons of experience.
All I get from Fishburne's portrayal is "old but still tough", and that's not enough for this character, in my book.
That's...more or less it. I'm just, really tired of consistently getting new Transformers media that has potential, but without Peter Cullen and Frank Welker even being approached for the projects. Yes, there's a possibility that they both tell/told these people to pound sand, but they've said repeatedly that they're getting pushed aside by the higher ups. And they've been so vocal about wanting to play the characters, but are constantly being given the boot by Hasbro.
They deserve better than that. The fans deserve better than that, and even I deserve better than that.
Peter Cullen and Frank Welker are the reason I and so many others had such golden childhoods. It's painful to see them getting disrespected like this, and I hate that more new TF media is being made without them, especially since they aren't getting any younger.
I'm not scared, exactly, about them dying.
I'm just scared they won't be able to have any more rodeos in Transformers media together before their time comes.
And that is why, ultimately, I can't bring myself to enjoy or watch Transformers: One. Why I don't care that it's failing like this.
Because Hasbro had their chance many times, and they've failed me. They keep failing me, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and all of us.
I'm just done caring for new shows from Transformers unless it's got our childhood heroes voicing our favorite characters with the good writing they had up until Transformers: Robots in Disguise 2015. And given this commercial blowout, I won't be getting satisfied anytime soon.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk. I hope you don't mind the release of my pain, but I've held it in for a month, more or less. I just needed to make it public.
