seeing people genuinely complain about the deaths in the acolyte and throwing around words like cruel and sadistic just once again has me thinking people need to actually sit and ponder on where a story is going and if it's something they can handle watching. nothing about the acolyte has implied it's anything besides a murder mystery, and features an entirely new cast of characters — something that, the last time we saw this in live action, ended in them all dying. just because something belongs to a franchise you love, doesn't mean you have to watch it, or that it has to be your cup of tea. It also doesn't make it bad storytelling if it's too brutal for your liking. The internet gives you every opportunity to make an informed opinion on what you consume, ultimately it's your responsibility, not the show's, to cater to what you can handle.

thinking about poe dameron. thinking about how he became a pilot because of his mother, whose legacy he wants to honor and whose wedding ring he constantly wears. how, iirc, he learned to fire a blaster as a teenager from zorii wynn. the way he decided at age seventeen, he wanted to follow leia, and became her trusted right hand man and surrogate son, and how he valued her insights even if he preferred to learn on his own through experience. how his closest friends are primarily shown to be women (suralinda, karé, and jessika) in the comics, how the pilots we see him interact with in tlj are paige and tallie. the way he instantly wants to do something to help holdo once she's put in charged even tho she wasn't what he was expecting and how (something extremely overlooked) he actually listens when she tells him to go back to his station and leaves to keep an eye on leia, before hearing out and putting his trust in rose's plan. how it's poe who first thinks to ask maz for counsel on what to do, and he takes her advice even if he doesn't like it. how much he admires rey at the end of tlj (assuming - correctly - it's her idea to distract the ties), how the first and only person he trusts to bring in to rose and finn's plan is kaydel, and how in tros, it's zorii who inspires him into finding his hope in the galaxy again, how he's the first to give jannah a chance, and how he makes it clear they're fighting for Leia.

thinking about how star wars gave us a character who so eminently admires and respects women and is often inspired by them and learns from them and asks them for advice when he needs it, and has more women friends than he does men, and yet the fandom took that and turned it around and painted him as a sexist fuckboi instead.

I love how my unintentional excuse as to why Alestair and Idan never have to go to work is because they ran away and basically quit without notice.

I've not had much time to indulge my fannish tendencies this month - too much real life stuff to wade through. I've kept up with my sampling of Supernatural's novel-to-epic-length Omegaverse "Destiel" fanfics, though.

What I'm finding - to my surprise - is that while I enjoy the angsty bits at the beginning (with the arranged marriage, the hounded fugitive fetching up in unexpected safety, the rescued abuse victim, the freed slave, the unwilling protagonist who blunders headfirst into his true mate but wants none of it) I lose interest almost as soon as that conflict is resolved for the story's central pairing. Once they're happy, safe, and screwing like blissed out Omegaverse-shaped weasels, I'm like, "meh, that's nice, but... whatever".

I'm sure a strong external-factors plotline could carry me to the end of one of these fanfics, and I've got a couple of promising candidates bookmarked for next time I find the reading braincell. Meanwhile, I'm wondering what it is about this particular kind of angsty, whumpy, miscommunication setup that's different from the non-Omegaverse kind. The angst, whump, and miscommunication tropes are very similar to the not-Omegaverse stories I rank as favourites; the writing and worldbuilding is equal or even better; the characterisation - if it carries me past the first chapter or two - is solidly appealing. I don't think it's the pacing of the stories bottoming out at the halfway-to-three-quarter mark, either.

Have I just lost all tolerance for 'and they lived happily and smuttily ever after', have I gone full sadist and can only tolerate the owwy bits, or is there something about the Omegaverse formula that only half-works for me?

The thing is, I'm starting to find the same thing with the stories I write. I much prefer to write lengthy epics, but I don't much care for heavy plot. In the past I could sustain the relationship tension and resulting drama until the epilogue, but now I can't seem to get there. I want to, I'm motivated to, but I can't seem to do it. I need that unwanted, externally-driven plot to sustain the drama. So something in these Omegaverse Supernatural pieces is hitting the same blind spot in my brain as my own more recent works. I'm interested, puzzled, and even vaguely optimistic about thinking my way to a practical solution if I keep picking at the question.

so I'm watching episode 2 of moon knight again, and maybe this is like super obvious and it simply flew over my head but I was like, "okay Marc but what was the point of doing this?"

and then it dawned on me that Harrow had control of the PA system which means he probably had the cameras too, so. This is Marc glaring at Harrow, and I just - the big dick energy of it all I need to. lay down.

Just watched Last Night in Soho and I adored it and do recommend watching it but the main character was so lesbian coded that to me the biggest plot twist in that movie was that none of those sapphic Chekhov's guns (Sappho's buns, if you will) paid off?

Was I really supposed to read a country girl that just moved to a big city and on her first night out stops to stare in awe at the door of a striptease with GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS written in neon pink letters as straight? A girl that dreams of becoming a fashion designer but when she goes to sleep gets to witness the life of another girl in the 60s, and becomes so enchanted with her beauty and charisma she not only makes her her muse (it was Anya Taylor-Joy so who can blame her) but also dyes her hair and starts dressing like her as straight?? A girl who flees a party in the verge of a nervous breakdown, looks in distress at the several straight couples making out near her and then proceeds to scream at the friendly boy that's been coded throughout the movie as her potential love interest how she wishes she could be like everyone else, just before she kisses him in what reads as a desperate hail mary, as fucking straight???
