💫 MOOMIN AU INTRODUCTION 💫

Welcome to the Garden AU! This has been my passion project for over 2 years, and I’m excited to finally present it to you all! I hope you will join me as I tell the story of the Garden AU to the world! :-)

💫 THE STORY 💫

This AU mainly follows Moomintroll and his friends as they adventure together, both inside and far outside of the valley. Their adventures start out fairly lighthearted, but when they discover that their own lives mysteriously reflect what is known about the lives of ‘The Pillars’, also known as the founders of magic, they seek to uncover the missing pieces of their stories and solve the mystery of the King’s Ruby and its uncertain origins.

Moomintroll

Species: Moomin (+witch) The enthusiastic Moomintroll, the self-proclaimed “leader” of the group and aspiring adventurer. It was his idea to bring everyone together to uncover the Pillars’ stories! He may be stubborn and hotheaded at times, but the love and warmth he has for his friends will always ground him in the end. Song I associate with him: Soap by The Oh Hellos

Snufkin

Species: Half jackalope, half mumrik The mysterious Snufkin, with the unique ability to turn invisible at will. While he and Moomin initially may not have had the best start, he will always come back to the valley to greet him each spring. While he appears stable and sure, rumors spread fast, and the winds are saying he’s keeping parts of him in the dark. Song I associate with him: What’s in the Middle by The Bird and the Bee

Snorkmaiden

Species: Snork A princess living abroad in the quiet Moominvalley. Her and her brother were dropped off at the Moominhouse years ago by their mother for unknown reasons. Don’t let her sweet nature fool you, she can brew up quite a storm! Song I associate with her: Once Upon a December from Anastasia

Snork

Species: …Snork A prince to match the princess. This curious inventor isn’t a fan of magic and prefers the predictability of science, but his roots as a magical creature are at odds with his ideals. Song I associate with him: Not decided

Sniff

Species: half dragon A half-dragon that was adopted into the Moomin family many years ago after a great storm. While on the surface he seems to be a mighty selfish beast with an eye for treasure, it seems his friends may take him for granted more than they realize. Song I associate with him: Not decided

Little My

Species: Half jackalope A “halfalope” like her brother, although she doesn’t possess the same ability to turn invisible since she lacks the mumrik genes. Her snarky attitude can prove to be quite a motivator even if it gets on other’s nerves. She’s a tiny trickster who knows a lot more than she lets on! Song I associate with her: Not decided

The story is split up into 3 main arcs. The first arc focuses on establishing relationships and the world around them, eventually leading into the beginnings of their journey in Arc 2!

It had been so long since they had sat by a fire together. The flames were reaching high, illuminating their isolated space in the woods with a warm, orange glow. Despite the crackling and sputtering from the fire, the night was quiet.

“I’m glad you found me,” said Snufkin.

Moomin fidgeted with his tail, a nervous habit that didn’t go by his best friend unnoticed. “Me too,” said the troll, still not courageous enough to look Snufkin in the eyes. “I knew to look for the campfire.”

Snufkin smiled fondly. “Clever troll.”

“Snufkin,” Moomin started, voice small. “I’m sorry for the things I said.”

“Moomintroll-”

“I know I shouldn’t have asked, it’s none of my business,” Moomin cut him off, the apology pouring out in a long string of words. “I was just curious and I felt left out, and I… I just…” he dropped his tail and slumped over. “I don’t want you to leave because of me.”

They became quiet, the apology hanging in the air between them, waiting in anxious anticipation to either be rejected or accepted. 

However, it was left unanswered. “Do you want to hear a song?” Snufkin asked, fingers tapping against the log he was sitting on, being the only indication of any nerves. Yet, his friend didn’t know of these subtle clues.

“What? Wait, you don’t have to-” Moomin finally looked up, his expression twisted into confused shock.

“No, but I want to.”

“Snufkin-”

“Moomintroll,” said Snufkin with a teasing smile, while pulling out the guitar.

That smile had always been rather infectious, so when Moomin felt the tug at the corners of his mouth, he closed his eyes and sighed. “I know what you’re trying to do.”

Strumming over the strings once, Snufkin answered in that same lighthearted tone. “If that is to play you a song, then you are correct.”

“I shouldn’t have said anything,” Moomin muttered in a low breath, mostly just to himself, wiping a paw over his face. “I just pressured you into it.” 

“Now, you know me well enough to know that is not the case. I only do what I want to,” Snufkin said earnestly, busying his hands making small adjustments to the tuning pegs. Despite looking confident, his voice started to lose some of that same gusto. “And it just so happens that I want to play you this song now.” He strummed the strings again, as if ready to break into song immediately, but then he hesitated, one hand curling around neck, the other holding the body close. “There’s a reason I didn’t play for you…”

This had Moomin’s curiosity piqued, but he remained quiet, knowing silent patience often was the key to get Snufkin talking. 

Snufkin snorted, a private smile forming on his lips, eyes cast down. “It’s silly, really. I became very self-conscious.”

“Why?” The word slipped out unintentionally, but Moomin had never been great at holding his tongue.

“Because…” His fingers danced over the strings again, grip loosening on the guitar. “I want it to be just right.”

Moomin didn’t think this made much sense. “You are being too harsh on yourself. Your music is great! I don’t think I’ve heard you play anything I didn’t like.”

The smile on Snufkin’s lips became a little fonder. “Perhaps.” He kept plucking at the strings, the soft sounds sounding lovely, despite not being a melody yet. “But this song I’ve been working on…” A vague blush spread on his cheeks, eyes very deliberately cast down still. “I made it for you.”

This left the young troll quite speechless and a similar tint coloured his cheeks. Snufkin had made many songs, often about his travels or nature or simply just a feeling. Never had he made a song specifically for Moomin. “You made a song for me?” Moomin breathed, eyes wide.

“Yes,” admitted Snufkin, cheeks turning redder. “It could still use some work, but… do you want to hear it?”

Moomin grinned widely, hardly believing what he was hearing. “Yes! Of course, I would love to hear,” he said excitedly. He felt so elated, he could practically burst! However, now was not the time, this was a tender moment, so Moomin regained some of his composure and gazed fondly at Snufkin, eyes shimmering. “Thank you.”

Finally, Snufkin looked up to meet his eyes, looking equally excited, nervous and fond. 

And so, Snufkin played a song for his very best friend.

I was thinking about what episodes could be in season 4, so I thought of this🤔

"A date for best friends"

Snorkmaiden tells Moomintroll that he has not been paying attention to her at all lately, so Moomintroll decides to write a letter in which he asks her out on a date. But the letter, thanks to Little My, does not fall into the hands of Snorkmaiden, but Snufkin. How will this awkward situation turn out?

Here are some headcanons of mine:

I like to envision that, as the elder of the two, Snufkin is also the taller one through their childhood. However, mumriks stop growing sooner than most other creatures. Instead of going through a massive growth spurt during puberty, their fur just gets a bit thicker, they grow some body-hair, and lose some of their baby fat.

So at some point in their adolescence, Moomintroll becomes as tall as Snufkin— and then keeps growing.

I like this, because I like imagining the way that their dynamic matures over time.

As children, Moomintroll idolized Snufkin, always looking up to him, both figuratively and literally. It was the beginnings of a crush, but an innocent, child crush. Snufkin, meanwhile, was predominantly carefree as a child. Though Moomintroll’s clinginess occasionally chafed at his nerves, Snufkin was always quick to forgive his best friend.

(Similar to their dynamic in the early Moomin books)

As young adolescents, Snufkin developed more of a preference for being left alone, craving freedom and a sense of independence above all else. Moomintroll’s clingy nature began to irritate him more easily. At the same time, however, Snufkin was secretly flattered by Moomintroll’s attention, though it flustered him terribly, and sometimes caused him to avoid Moomintroll entirely.

(Similar to their dynamics in the 90’s anime)

As older adolescents, Moomintroll matured quite a bit, and his childlike worship of Snufkin ebbed away slowly but surely. Their friendship also matured. Once, they were always touching, and neither of them thought anything of it. But as full-fledged teenagers, they both attempted to act more casual around one another, as if trying to prove themselves manly men.

(Similar to their dynamics in the 2019 Moominvalley tv series)

And as young adults, Snufkin is the one looking up to Moomintroll. Having matured into a fine adult, with all the calm compassion of his mother and the creative mind of his father, Moomintroll is no longer chasing and pining after Snufkin all the time. He has adult matters to worry over, such as preparing to build his own house. And despite himself, Snufkin starts to miss all the attention.

I just really like the idea of Snufkin starting to pine after Moomintroll just as the moomin starts becoming more independent.

Plus I love the mental image of Snufkin getting all blushy and swoony over a tall, adult Moomintroll, whose naturally plump body has developed from that of a marshmallow to that of a bear: still fat, still round, but with a lot of muscle and strength hidden beneath.

Spoilery opinions about the season 4 of the Moominvalley

Some of the character developments were diminished (because of the change of the writers?) which is why it would've made more sense to me that this season happened before season 3.

Like so many others, I am missing the indie-style music from the earlier seasons.

Definitely too little Snufkin (and previously amazingly built up Snufmin). His absence especially in episodes 6 and 7 was very visible. Episode 8 was definitely my favorite. At least they got their little date in the 12th episode. Snufkin's reactions to Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden.. ouch.

Putting Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden together romantically just doesn't make sense. They are much better as friends. Nevertheless, I like Snorkmaiden this season much more than before.

That being said, I still found some of the plots and writing enjoyable and the whole season very quotable.

Loving the sibling-energy Snufkin and Little My have going on and the way they did Stinky, Snork and Too-Ticky in this version

...as well as Moominmamma being an artist and interrupting Fillyjonk's and Mymble's couple-fight.

In my opinion, they have done Sniff a bit dirty before in this series, but Sniff's cave belongs to my favorite episodes. I also liked his storyline in episode 6 and that he gave us the Sorry-Oo-reference.

Seeing Joxter made me ridiculously happy. He is such a vibe and I am sure that him and Muskrat would become great friends. Even though there was no reunion between him and Snufkin, I am certain that those few episodes were a starting point for some kind of prequel/spin-off. Full versions of his songs, please!

The Collector-Hemulen, finally!

I wish we would've gotten more Toft-content.

It was very satisfying to see Moominpappa finish his memoirs and realize that he has everything he needs right there.

The Groke's parts and her connection to Little My and Moomintroll wrecked me in the best way.

I don't know how I feel about the Comet-episode being the last one and I think the storyline could've been better to split in three episodes, but... everybody gathering together and especially Moomintroll's speech made me strangely emotional.

Was this the best season of the series? No. But they did a better job with it than I thought they would. I just truly hope that there will be some kind of continuation, because I really adore this adaptation.

Tove's Notes for Snufkin

Gentle, a little careless, independent, and not at all interested in owning things. In fact he possesses all that appeals to him. Though friendly, Snufkin seems almost to prefer places to people. He has many admirers, particularly among those who are small and shy, while Moomintroll is his best friend.

Sometimes Snufkin may neglect his friends but they always forgive him. Utterly free, he comes and goes as he likes. But he will always return so long as no one tries to prevent him from coming and going freely. He never hurries. Obviously, he's a pipe-smoker. He also plays a mouth-organ and wears extremely shabby old clothes. In green. Hedonistic approach to life, mingled with the pleasure of simplifying and reducing things.

Snufkin moves about at random but always south. Sometimes he wanders off at night, particularly if the moon is shining. He never asks the names of the places where he has been. When he comes back in the spring he may say he has seen this or that, but never that he has been here or there.

Voice: soft, deep, and very calm. He has an attractive laugh and is often quietly amused.

I believe the term 'mumrik' was used formerly to indicate solitary, introverted types.

its been very well known that thingumy and bob are meant to be a representation of tove jansson and vivica bandler relationship , and how their red ruby are meant to be a metaphor for them hiding their love and only opening the case to those they trust . even the hobgoblin searching for it could be a metaphor for him wanting / searching for something to make him feel accepted or happy , but coming to the realization that it’s the people he meet that fills those wants he’s had for centuries .

if i dare even say , and this is a reach , the hat could be about how once you come out things can change severely , scary and good things can happen , it’s all just how people and urself continue on .

Quarterfinals, Match 3

Stanford Pines and Fiddleford McGucket (Fiddauthor) from Gravity Falls vs. Moomintroll and Snufkin (Snufmin) from Moominvalley!

Propaganda for Fiddauthor:

1. College roomies. 2. Ford called Fiddleford later on, asked him to cone to Gravity Falls, and they temporarily moved in together (on account of Fidds having a wife and child back in Palo Alto or something).

They Were Roommates. And DnD nerds, unhinged scientists (one of them made a deal with a demon and put a metal plate in their skull to prevent possession from said demon, the other builds homicidal robots and made a memory-erasing cult.), Best Friends, etc. Ford also wrote things like how they talked about their futures while star gazing, "my poor. beleaguered assistant".... stuff like that. TL;DR: roommates, played DnD one-on-one, and Ford talked about Fiddleford a LOT in his journal.

Propaganda for Snufmin:

BASICALLY. The author of the original books was a queer woman and Moomintroll kinda was her self insert. At some point she had a relationship with a man who was always traveling so they had to break up. So she made Snufkin's character, who was inspired by this man, and Snufkin and Moomintroll's relationship was inspired by both of them. But at this point of time you couldn't make queer rep in a book, so it was never canon, only ambiguous. However, the creators of the most recent cartoon, Moominvalley, are clearly aware of this backstory and made them even more ambiguous. Kind of "ambiguous best friends"... And ambiguous best friends is like, the perfect trope for queerplatonic headcanons.
