Hester Street (Joan Micklin Silver, 1975)
Cast: Carol Kane, Steven Keats, Mel Howard, Dorrie Kavanaugh, Doris Roberts, Stephen Strimpel, Lauren Friedman, Paul Freedman, Martin Garner, Leib Lensky, Zane Lasky, Zvee Scooler, Eda Reiss Merin. Screenplay: Joan Micklin Silver, based on a novel by Abraham Cahan. Cinematography: Kenneth Van Sickle. Production design: Stuart Wurtzel. Film editing: Katherine Wenning. Music: William Bolcom, Herbert L. Clarke.
Gitl (Carol Kane) joins her immigrant husband Yankel (Steven Keats) in turn-of-the-century New York City, and discovers that he is no longer the modest, religiously observant man she knew in the old country. He has picked up American slang, while she speaks only Yiddish, and calls himself Jake while insisting that their son, Yossele (Paul Freedman) be called Joey. He has also taken up with a flashy Americanized woman named Mamie (Dorrie Kavanaugh). With the help of their neighbor, Mrs. Kavarsky (Doris Roberts), Gitl learns how to adapt to the new world, shed herself of Jake, and find a new, more suitable husband. Kane received an Oscar nomination for best actress in writer-director Joan Micklin Silver's first feature. Low-key, warm-hearted, and amusing, Hester Street evokes silent movies in its well-crafted depiction of the era in which it's set.

I got tagged by the bug the myth the legend @bugdotpng to talk about one of my OCs!! THANK YOU BUG!! I will tag @kingfucko @creempyeyes @destroyhorse and @aj8ee with the OC of their choice IF THEY WANNA DO IT you don't have to i'm not your mom. also if i didn't tag you but you want to do it consider this a tag! Here's Jakey-no-cakey i don't have a cool pic of him to head this with like bug did for danny hee hoo General
Name: Jachobin Garbot (pronounced Jake-obin Gar-bow, the t is silent)
Alias: Jake, Yakov, Jacob. I call him "Jakey" often.
Gender: cis man (he/him)
Age: Died at 42, currently 140 years old.
Spoken Language: english, bits of yiddish
Sexual Orientation: bisexual and chronically dtf. one of his character songs is My Type by Saint Motel.
Occupation: Formerly a detective, now a paranormal investigator/private investigator (which one he is depends on which side of his business card you're looking at)
Favorite...
Color: Grey or red
Entertainment: watching forensic files, reading about unsolved criminal cases and trying to solve them himself, sex, Substance Abuse(tm), sudoku.
Pastime: Solving puzzles and mysteries! He loves having something to figure out.
Food: Jakey is a vampire and thus cannot eat, but when he was alive in the 1920s he liked a Charleston Chew or sandwiches.
Drink: his signature cocktail is a Manhattan!
Have They...
Passed University: Nope, in 1903/04 he went from high school to a police academy (CROWD BOOS) and moved up the ranks to being a detective, a job he'd wind up losing in the 2000s.
Had Sex: and then some
Had Sex in Public: yes as well
Got Tattoos: nope. I used to joke that he had a tattoo on his butt that said RITA but I've since dropped that.
Got Piercings: yes, his left ear is pierced because someone in the 80s told him that was the gay ear.
Got Scarred: he has a permanent bite mark on his neck from being turned into a vampire!
Had a Broken Heart: not really!! He tends to avoid commitment since human partners will die and he's already enough of a depressed bastard, and that means he's never TOO hung up on anyone if they decide they don't want any more of him. (In many AUs though, he winds up committing to someone anyway, despite his best efforts)
Are They...
A Cuddler: He can be, but doesn't tend to initiate it himself. He's not against it and will enjoy it with someone oh-so-special, but it's not something he seeks out.
Scared Easily: scared? no. Startled? yes. Sometimes he gets into his own head, thinking hard about some kind of mystery, and will make a noise I'd spell out as "GHEET" if you startle him.
Jealous Easily: nah, do what you gotta baby!
Trustworthy: that depends; he is not above lying if it serves the purpose of solving a case or unbending a mystery. but, he's also great at keeping a secret, and is a good person at the end of the day.
Family
Parents: his father was a history professor and his mother was a housewife because well! it was the 1880s. Jachobin was named after his grandfather, Yakov, and the Jacobin political party. He was raised in a largely-Jewish neighborhood in turn-of-the-century Baltimore.
Siblings: Jachobin has one younger sister whose name ESCAPES ME. He used to sit on the stoop outside their house and watch her play hoop-and-stick when they were kids. Like the rest of his family, he hasn't spoken to her since he 'died' in 1928.
Children: This is heavily dependent on the AU! However, the son that is the most "his" is his son with Cheyenne's OC Charlie, Marley. Marley looks like Jachobin but taller and ganglier, and Jachobin loves his weird horror podcaster AV-kid son to death.
Pets: Jachobin sometimes gets lucky enough to have a floppy scruffy black cat named Schmenderick.

Daniel Kahn (Piano and Vocal) and Jake Shulman-Ment (Violin) טאָם טראַובערץ קלאָגליד (Tom Traubert's Blues) 2022
Daniel Kahn doing Tom waits in Yiddish. Kahn's translations are never literal, they're always poetic, and this one is lovely. Plus, Kahn's vocals are always great.

BMC headcanons, i guess
Christine - Filipino - Everyone thinks she only listens to autistic people music, but she also listens to riot grrrl and hardcore - Actually pretty confident in her body (One that is chubby, if you draw her as a skinny woman I will bring woe upon your house and famine upon your fields). But very socially unconfident. - Transfemme, found out in 7th grade, socially transitioned and started puberty blockers in 8th grade, started hormones a year before the musical. - Had a crush on Jeremy since ILPR, was going to confess in GTIKBI, but got cold feet. - Actually a pretty devout liberation theology Catholic. - Decently fluent in Tagalog - Demisexual - Tumblr user (affectionate) - Post-canon starts learning Yiddish to be more connected to Jeremy's culture, ends up being more fluent than he is
Jeremy - Half Ashkenazi (Mom's side), half General American Mutt (Dad's side) - Deeply ashamed of himself for not being more devout or not speaking better Yiddish as well as imagining a future and family with a Goyische woman. - Tries to keep to Kosher - Actually only listens to autistic people music, but also some klezmer, specifically Daniel Kahn and The Painted Bird - Redditor (Derogatory) - Transmasc, found out in 8th grade, came out in 9th, puberty blockers in 10th, hasn't started HRT but is considering. - Went through an embarrassing reactionary phase - Bisexual - Autistic - Secretly he's kinda girly - No one at school except Michael knows that he's Jewish. - Gets a tumblr account post-canon due to pressure from Christine and Michael, ends up really enjoying it - Tries to learn Tagalog but is horrible at it. He does eventually get better at Yiddish, though - He has a nervous breakdown the first time he's intimate with Christine due to trauma, Christine is very understanding
Michael - Filipino - Gay gay homosexual gay - Ska listener (Derogatory, stupid fucking genre) - Had a crush on Jeremy in the first years of his transition, but those feelings died out - The second person to find out about DYWH, gets incredibly angry at Chloe - Takes a long time to forgive Rich, but eventually relents - Helped Jeremy out of his embarrassing reactionary phase - Atheist - Not actually neurodivergent, he's just chill like that
Brooke - Similar to Michael, she's just chill like that - Actually always kinda liked Jeremy - Closeted bisexual - Demigirl - Feels really guilty for making Jeremy uncomfortable during Upgrade - General American Mutt, but mostly German - Listens to Chappell Roan - Hidden feelings for Chloe, but those really take a hit when she learns about DYWH - Really protestant, maybe even Baptist (ew)
Chloe - General American Mutt, but mainly English - Very closeted bisexual - Hidden (obsessive) feelings for Brooke - NPD, but like most sufferers, it's as a cover for deep-seated fear and trauma - Taylor Swift listener (Derogatory) - Catholic, but not liberation theology
Rich - Polish, obviously - Feels immense guilt for how he treated Jeremy and Michael - Immense pyrophobia - ADHD - Catholic, but not devout - Bisexual (Doesn't even count as a headcanon) - Eventually becomes a really close friend of Christine's - Feelings for Michael - Post-SQUIP, he becomes dedicated to becoming a kinder, more understand, more genuine person
Jenna Rolan - African-American - Protestant, maybe Methodist. But that's just cause I like Methodists - Closeted lesbian, I guess. She shows no interest in men as far as I know. - Social anxiety around not being noticed - NT
Jake - African-American - Deeply closeted self-hating bisexual - Immediately stops being friends with Rich post-SQUIP - Baptist (Again, ew) - NT - Dudebro chauvinist but secretly he's actually very emotional
Madeline - Does she ever even show up on stage? I feel like I'm constantly being gaslit by the fandom to think that she's a character in this musical
Mr. Heere - Closeted bisexual - Autistic - Ethnicity stated prior - Begins therapy to treat his depression for Jeremy's sake - Atheist, a little more chill about it than Michael - This is kinda out there, but eventually he and Mr. Reyes start dating
Mr. Reyes - Autistic - Spanish (Not actually born there, but all four of his grandparents were) - Gay gay homosexual gay - Atheist, a lot less chill about it than Mr. Heere - Also starts taking therapy

Yay, you're back! I missed you!
One of my things when I write Marc et al in fic is that I always make them, as a group, into polyglots. In the show, we know Steven speaks a couple of languages and Marc speaks Arabic, so it's not that far of a stretch to make them all speak a couple more, but I have a special soft spot for Marc being like, actually quite able to get around in various languages given his mercenarying days. Being able to speak with the locals is a useful skill in his pre-Moon Knight line of work, and I also love that it is absolutely a nod to his intelligence. In my current wip, I have him conversationally fluent in five and then able to make himself understood and/or be dreadfully impolite in several more.
You pick things up when you spend time in situ with folks, and I always read Marc as someone who can and does pick up languages as he needs them.
Hello!
I definitely get so happy when I see Moon Knight showing off his language skills.
Jake speaks Yiddish for sure. We know Marc speaks Arabic, Spanish, Hebrew, and we've seen him understand many different African dialects as well as middle eastern dialects. He also speaks French because it would be impossible for him to have spent that much time with Frenchie and NOT picked up something. We've also seen him understand and speak many of the Marvel made up languages.
And that's translated over to Moon Knight, who for sure has made it his mission to speak languages of other heroes to use in team up situations. We've seen him even use ASL in multiple situations.
Marc is 100% adaptable in any situation. It's a survival thing he's picked up from his days on the run and in the military and mercenary groups. Drop him somewhere new and he'll pick up that language in no time at all.
I'd love to see more writers include that tidbit in his file folder. It just adds to his abilities and makes him that much more of a problem for the people that go against him.
I'm sure he's also picked up ancient Egyptian just to fuck with Khonshu.
MCU MK? Same story. Though I'm sure Steven would be the one to get pissed off at Khonshu and just start yelling at him in Ancient Egyptian and Khonshu is just standing there like O>O
#Ask away#talk to me about Moon Knight#Marc out here chatting up the Marvel Universe without a care in the world

Katz's Deli on East Houston Street, New York City.
In 1888, a small deli by the name of Iceland Brothers was established on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side by the Iceland brothers. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the name of the store was officially changed to "Iceland & Katz". Willy’s cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the Iceland brothers to officially form Katz’s Delicatessen. Their landsman Harry Tarowsky bought into the partnership in April 1917. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street, to its present location, during the construction of the subway system. The vacant lot on Houston Street (pronounced "House-ton" after a Dutch emigrant of the same name) was home to barrels of meat and pickles until the present storefront facade was added between 1946-49.
Born in New York's Lower East Side
In the early part of the twentieth century, the Lower East Side was home to millions of newly immigrated families. This, along with the lack of public and private transportation, forged a solid community such that Katz’s became a focal point for congregating. On Fridays, the neighborhood turned out to enjoy franks and beans, a Katz tradition.
Send a salami to your boy in the army
During World War II, the three sons of the owners were all serving their country in the armed forces, and the family tradition of sending food to their sons became the company slogan “Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army” Tm.
During the peak of the Yiddish theater, the restaurant was forever filled with actors, singers and comedians from the many theaters on 2nd Avenue, as well as the National Theater on Houston Street. Although the age of the Yiddish theater has passed, Katz's is still has its fair share of famous customers, whose photos now line our walls.
Family run for over 100 years
The next change in ownership took place when Willy Katz passed away, and his son Lenny took over for him. In the late 70’s, both Benny Katz and Harry Tarowsky passed away, leaving the store to Benny's son-in-law Artie Maxstein and Harry's son Izzy Tarowsky. However by the mid-1980’s, the new generation of owners realized that they had no immediate family of their own to whom they could leave the store. Long-time friend and restaurateur Martin Dell, along with son Alan (who was a chef and a manager at a neighboring deli) and son-in-law Fred Austin, officially bought into the partnership in 1988 on the 100th anniversary of the store.
Alan’s son Jake officially joined the store in late 2009 and is currently in charge of all major operations.
Meat our pride and joy
Each week thousands of visitors from around the world flock to Katz's to dine in this legendary deli, and to feast on the most delectable sandwiches, platters and meats. But it's really New Yorkers have made Katz's Delicatessen what it is, making Katz's an inherent part of the city's culture and history. They enthusiastically spread the word, brought their friends in, wrote books, shot films, and kept coming back for a pastrami on rye.
Building a reputation on longevity alone is nothin' to brag about, which is why we've built ours on quality. Now that's somethin' special. We only select the best cuts of beef for our corned beef, pastrami, brisket, and other fine foods. Our corned beef and pastrami is cured using a slower method, which best flavors the meat, without injecting chemicals, water, or other additives to speed the process.
Our finished product can take up to a full 30 days to cure, while commercially prepared corned beef is often pressure-injected (or "pumped") to cure in 36 hours. Yep, you read that right. 30 days vs. 36 hours. Now, which sounds like the better meat to you?

Have you read the latest Moon Knight issue? We got Jake and Steven again!!
yesssss i knowww!! XD
omg this issue was sooo beautiful.
Marc calling Badr brother and helping him figure out how to use his connection with the other Fists, from Marc's own experience of plurality.
Marc embracing Steven and Jake's help when they all sensed that Alton needed them, instead Marc of trying to shut them out and do everything himself.
and then there's the way MK System came to understand who Alton is, and helped him process that. they let Alton figure it out, and realize what he needs to do. they helped him understand the autonomy of his consciousness, from their experience of their own consciousnesses and autonomy.
it was also really meaningful to have them all be there, in this mind space. because of course they are!
Badr asks, "Your other selves can manifest in this space?"
and Marc says, "Why not? we're inside a mind, aren't we?"
(unlike the current miniseries where Steven and Jake are still nowhere to be found, and will probably only appear in issues 4 & 5.)
even though this isn't their inner world, there's something *so meaningful* in seeing the way that they figure out how to interface with this other mind *through* the experience of their inner world.

like, i was worried Mackay was going to do something funky with Badr's experience of the Fists (like overshadowing a DID system), but instead he created this beautiful moment where Marc gets to teach Badr.
where Marc gets to be the big brother!
where Badr gets to be more vulnerable!!
just!! oh Mackay thank you for this.

also i love Mackay for real for having Jake speak Yiddish every time we see him.
"Nish keet" means "not good".

Mackay even commented about that on his Twitter too! truly, a mensch.

we also learn that Jake canonically calls people he's just met "friendo." this feels like we've received some sacred knowledge.

we even got a Lemire reference!!

truly, this is one of my top Mackay issues, right up there with issues 14, 15, and 24. i really appreciate that Mackay is showing them learning to work together as a system, and that he's highlighting the *strengths* of system communication.
#issue 27 was beautiful#gonna be thinking about this issue for a long time#moon knight#marc spector#jake lockley#steven grant#jed mackay#midnight mission#moon knight comics

Hi TG Fandom!
(A little thing because I have no WiFi and I’m salty about it 😂)
I need a verse where Jake has a great family, yes, but a terribly overbearing family.
That’s why he lives as far away from them as he can and that works! Ya know, for the most part… until the wedding. The moment Bradley proposes, Jake is done for. He’s toast. Slicemav, the Daggers and the ‘86 flyboys don’t understand why Jake is mentally writing his will.
My family is going to know and kill me for not telling them about you earlier.
But we haven’t announced it?
It doesn’t matter, she’ll hear it on the wind.
Who?
My Ma.
And sure enough, eight hours later there are eight angry women on Slicemav’s doorstep and his Ma is bemoaning why Jake doesn’t love her anymore.
He’s getting married! He doesn’t want us at the wedding! Oy my heart! You were supposed to bring me naches (joy)! My only boy! MOSHE OUR SON HATES US!
And Ice, who is helpfully sipping his tea from the kitchen hears the Yiddish and knows. He looks at Jake from across the room with such knowing horror. He too was Jake at one point.
Bradley is dying of laughter at watching Jake’s yenta mother squeeze his cheeks and cry about how grown up he is. Bradley doesn’t realize he’s next.
His seven sisters (ranging from 4 to 28) are all about to passive aggressively plan the biggest wedding bash ever.
This is My Big Fat Greek Wedding (The Hangster and Jewish edition). 😂

Reasons to vote for Moon Knight System:
They're canonically a system
They're Jewish and they represent survivors of generational trauma
The Lemire/Smallwood MK run is one of the best depictions of a system in literature
In the MCU, they are canonically autistic
Steven Grant uses his special interests as his superpower
Jake Lockley is a girlboss and wears a fake moustache and curses at people in Yiddish and Spanish
Marc Spector is a human disaster and a catboy and we love him
They're just the swaggiest

//Steven can fill in slow dancing. Jake asks if Yiddish counts. Marc hovers with the highlighter over "monster or cryptid?"
"S'okay abou' da dancing. I can teach ya all kines. Yiddish? Would love t' learn. I feel migh make it easy f' talk story wi' each oddah." She wants to see a smile bloom. Wants Marc above the others to know even if he did fill it in, it wouldn't change things. Isn't that what being friends is about? "Wha' would make you happy?"
