“Kill List,” Moon Knight (Vol. 9/2021), #20.
Writer: Jed MacKay; Penciler and Inker: Alessandro Cappuccio; Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg; Letterer: Cory Petit
#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Moon Knight vol. 9#Moon Knight 2021#Moon Knight comics#latest release#Moon Knight#Marc Spector#Jake Lockley#Reese#J A K E#heck YEAH#look at him with his invaluable practical knowledge!!!#and there’s a mustache stashed somewhere in the Moon Knight suit just for him I’m weeping#I love how great of a team player he is#I love the Yiddish#I love the fact that he calls Reese ‘kid’#and I’m definitely not the first person to point this out but the symbolism of when the physical mask is worn is fascinating#(some might kvetch that it’s ‘obvious’ or ’heavy handed’ but so??? if it works???)#Just the idea that only Marc wears the Moon Knight or Mr. Knight masks#the surface-level (and perhaps rather old fashioned and out of touch) interpretation could be that Jake or Steven don’t need the masks#because they themselves are a form of masks but eeeeeeh whereas that might have been true for the Moon Knight comics of the 80’s#I feel like a lot of authors have done a lot to move away from that interpretation#in fact it’s pretty clearly communicated in issue number 14 of this very series (and touched upon again in issue 15)#that while Marc sees Steven and Jake as lovable members of their own social circles he still holds a very deep sense of…how do you say?#Perhaps on better days it could be described as a ‘healthy understanding of his own past and present lethality’ and on worse days#‘a not small amount of shame or self-loathing for what he’s done’#but anyway#all this to say that I’m always happy to see Jake

Daniel Kahn (Piano and Vocal) and Jake Shulman-Ment (Violin) טאָם טראַובערץ קלאָגליד (Tom Traubert's Blues) 2022
Daniel Kahn doing Tom waits in Yiddish. Kahn's translations are never literal, they're always poetic, and this one is lovely. Plus, Kahn's vocals are always great.

Yay, you're back! I missed you!
One of my things when I write Marc et al in fic is that I always make them, as a group, into polyglots. In the show, we know Steven speaks a couple of languages and Marc speaks Arabic, so it's not that far of a stretch to make them all speak a couple more, but I have a special soft spot for Marc being like, actually quite able to get around in various languages given his mercenarying days. Being able to speak with the locals is a useful skill in his pre-Moon Knight line of work, and I also love that it is absolutely a nod to his intelligence. In my current wip, I have him conversationally fluent in five and then able to make himself understood and/or be dreadfully impolite in several more.
You pick things up when you spend time in situ with folks, and I always read Marc as someone who can and does pick up languages as he needs them.
Hello!
I definitely get so happy when I see Moon Knight showing off his language skills.
Jake speaks Yiddish for sure. We know Marc speaks Arabic, Spanish, Hebrew, and we've seen him understand many different African dialects as well as middle eastern dialects. He also speaks French because it would be impossible for him to have spent that much time with Frenchie and NOT picked up something. We've also seen him understand and speak many of the Marvel made up languages.
And that's translated over to Moon Knight, who for sure has made it his mission to speak languages of other heroes to use in team up situations. We've seen him even use ASL in multiple situations.
Marc is 100% adaptable in any situation. It's a survival thing he's picked up from his days on the run and in the military and mercenary groups. Drop him somewhere new and he'll pick up that language in no time at all.
I'd love to see more writers include that tidbit in his file folder. It just adds to his abilities and makes him that much more of a problem for the people that go against him.
I'm sure he's also picked up ancient Egyptian just to fuck with Khonshu.
MCU MK? Same story. Though I'm sure Steven would be the one to get pissed off at Khonshu and just start yelling at him in Ancient Egyptian and Khonshu is just standing there like O>O

Jake Adelstein is kinda breathtaking in his sheer gall. This is, we believe, called "chutzpah" in Yiddish.

Have you read the latest Moon Knight issue? We got Jake and Steven again!!
yesssss i knowww!! XD
omg this issue was sooo beautiful.
Marc calling Badr brother and helping him figure out how to use his connection with the other Fists, from Marc's own experience of plurality.
Marc embracing Steven and Jake's help when they all sensed that Alton needed them, instead Marc of trying to shut them out and do everything himself.
and then there's the way MK System came to understand who Alton is, and helped him process that. they let Alton figure it out, and realize what he needs to do. they helped him understand the autonomy of his consciousness, from their experience of their own consciousnesses and autonomy.
it was also really meaningful to have them all be there, in this mind space. because of course they are!
Badr asks, "Your other selves can manifest in this space?"
and Marc says, "Why not? we're inside a mind, aren't we?"
(unlike the current miniseries where Steven and Jake are still nowhere to be found, and will probably only appear in issues 4 & 5.)
even though this isn't their inner world, there's something *so meaningful* in seeing the way that they figure out how to interface with this other mind *through* the experience of their inner world.
Tumblr media
like, i was worried Mackay was going to do something funky with Badr's experience of the Fists (like overshadowing a DID system), but instead he created this beautiful moment where Marc gets to teach Badr.
where Marc gets to be the big brother!
where Badr gets to be more vulnerable!!
just!! oh Mackay thank you for this.
Tumblr media
also i love Mackay for real for having Jake speak Yiddish every time we see him.
"Nish keet" means "not good".
Tumblr media
Mackay even commented about that on his Twitter too! truly, a mensch.
Tumblr media
we also learn that Jake canonically calls people he's just met "friendo." this feels like we've received some sacred knowledge.
Tumblr media
we even got a Lemire reference!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
truly, this is one of my top Mackay issues, right up there with issues 14, 15, and 24. i really appreciate that Mackay is showing them learning to work together as a system, and that he's highlighting the *strengths* of system communication.

Reasons to vote for Moon Knight System:
They're canonically a system
They're Jewish and they represent survivors of generational trauma
The Lemire/Smallwood MK run is one of the best depictions of a system in literature
In the MCU, they are canonically autistic
Steven Grant uses his special interests as his superpower
Jake Lockley is a girlboss and wears a fake moustache and curses at people in Yiddish and Spanish
Marc Spector is a human disaster and a catboy and we love him
They're just the swaggiest

//Steven can fill in slow dancing. Jake asks if Yiddish counts. Marc hovers with the highlighter over "monster or cryptid?"
Tumblr media
"S'okay abou' da dancing. I can teach ya all kines. Yiddish? Would love t' learn. I feel migh make it easy f' talk story wi' each oddah." She wants to see a smile bloom. Wants Marc above the others to know even if he did fill it in, it wouldn't change things. Isn't that what being friends is about? "Wha' would make you happy?"

thank you so much. your words are so sweet and thoughtful, you are a very lovely person for taking your time to talk to a stranger online when you had no obligation to. you're incredibly kind.
it's incredibly funny that you mention challah specifically, because one of the things i did after learning about grandma's story was researching a lot more about jewish customs in eastern europe. in doing so, i learned about babka. it's a bread with chocolate rolled into the dough, something i grew up eating - mostly my mom's version, but when we visited my grandparent's house grandma would make it for us with crushed walnuts. i loved it so much as a kid one of my first worries when my teeth started changing was 'how am i gonna eat grandma's chocolate bread now'. We called it chocolate bread, because up until the point of my research I had no idea it was called babka, or that it was a jewish desert from eastern europe. i keep catching these little things our family does that i thought nothing of until now, and that i keep learning are jewish customs. i have no idea how grandma managed to keep the recipe for it, she was so young when she migrated. maybe it was her sister, she was 4 years or so older. and to think that it survived to me and my cousin is striking. grandma is very old now, so i dont want to talk to her about this and risk upsetting her or making her sad, and i wish id had their brother to talk to - from what our aunt says, he was a lot more open about being jewish, albeit not about having fled Poland. So this has been a unique conversation for me. Thank you for letting me open up.
What you say about learning touches me. I want to learn more, to keep learning about this and to do so before Grandma passes on. She and her siblings were so brave, it's an honor to even think of having that story with me.
i hope you know deep in your heart that your words have given me a warmth like none other. thank you.
I love babka! and it is amazing they kept the recipe (and wonderful)
if you like cooking/baking I'd recommend picking up King Solomon's Table, Honey Cake & Latkes: Recipes from the Old World by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Survivors, The Book of Jewish Food, Modern Jewish Baker by Shannon Sarna, Jew-ish by Jake Cohen
any ways on your grandmother, in the last few years my 3 living grandparents passed away in their 90s and I miss them very much. I found each of them much more interested in telling their stories, talking about people who died before my parents were born. This was particularly true after my grandfather's older brother passed and my grandmother's sister. I think we as people have a need to share and an obligation to speak of the dead. I don't know her, but I hope you get to talk about this or at least some part of it, ask whose babka recipe it is, did her mother teach them both? or just her older sister who showed her? or was it their big brother? were they bakers in the old country? I know it gave my grandmother a great deal of comfort when she got Alzheimer's to share photos of her parents with us and tell their story before it was too late, I think focusing on the end of the story is maybe a mistake, she had a life before that and I hope maybe she can remember it for what it was, good.
We're all running out of time with them, every year they do The March of the Living, a march between Auschwitz and Birkenau, in 2019 the march was lead by 70 survivors, in 2022 the first post-Covid march, just 8 and people are saying it might be the last that has any... time is running out. When they're gone, it won't be gone, but our ability to... touch it, to see past horror to find the people the real people, it'll be so much harder
oh I'd also recommend Born to Kvetch, Just say Nu, and Rhapsody in Schmaltz by Michael Wex since at a guess Yiddish was your grandma's first language.
any ways good luck with all this, I do think you should talk with your grandma, just be sensitive in how you do it
shalom and good luck.

Hi TG Fandom!
(A little thing because I have no WiFi and I’m salty about it 😂)
I need a verse where Jake has a great family, yes, but a terribly overbearing family.
That’s why he lives as far away from them as he can and that works! Ya know, for the most part… until the wedding. The moment Bradley proposes, Jake is done for. He’s toast. Slicemav, the Daggers and the ‘86 flyboys don’t understand why Jake is mentally writing his will.
My family is going to know and kill me for not telling them about you earlier.
But we haven’t announced it?
It doesn’t matter, she’ll hear it on the wind.
Who?
My Ma.
And sure enough, eight hours later there are eight angry women on Slicemav’s doorstep and his Ma is bemoaning why Jake doesn’t love her anymore.
He’s getting married! He doesn’t want us at the wedding! Oy my heart! You were supposed to bring me naches (joy)! My only boy! MOSHE OUR SON HATES US!
And Ice, who is helpfully sipping his tea from the kitchen hears the Yiddish and knows. He looks at Jake from across the room with such knowing horror. He too was Jake at one point.
Bradley is dying of laughter at watching Jake’s yenta mother squeeze his cheeks and cry about how grown up he is. Bradley doesn’t realize he’s next.
His seven sisters (ranging from 4 to 28) are all about to passive aggressively plan the biggest wedding bash ever.
This is My Big Fat Greek Wedding (The Hangster and Jewish edition). 😂

REPOST & LIST 6 SONGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE YOUR MUSE .
This got long because I did some for each.
Cut.
Tumblr media
The Killing Moon (All Night Version) - Echo & The Bunnymen (aka Marc's canonical ringtone).
Under blue moon, I saw you So soon you'll take me Up in your arms, too late to beg you Or cancel it, though I know it must be The killing time Unwillingly mine
V - Cyberpunk 2077, Marcin Przybyłowicz
Sheyn vi di levone - Gevolt
You are as beautiful a the moon, you are as bright as the stars, you have been sent to me from the heavens, you are a gift from above. I found my happiness when I saw you. You made my heart happy - you are as beautiful as a thousand suns.
Norra El Norra (Entering The Ark) - Orphaned Land
Nora El Nora, the lord of courage Return to me my lord, mend my wounds My soul is yearning, and in valor we wait Nora I sing to thee, hymn of praise To you I give my life and faith Through all time, mighty Nora Deliver us the progany of Abraham Offspring of greatness You are the living God Giver of Torah
Dead Don't Die - Shinedown
The dead don't die, the heart still beats Head held high, I haunt these streets Life's killed me a hundred thousand times You can try, you can try, but the dead don't die
Not Changing Pops, Seeking - Nightlab
I'm not changing pops, I'm seeking And I hear what you're preaching But this drowsy inanition can't stay I am screaming out this seance While a spectral love is playing with the lights It just ain't right
Tumblr media
Everybody Knows - Leonard Cohen
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows
Hymn For The Weekend - Coldplay
Oh, angel sent from up above You know you make my world light up When I was down, when I was hurt You came to lift me up Life is a drink and love's a drug Oh, now I think I must be miles up When I was a river dried up You came to rain a flood
Main Theme From Goncharov - Jordan Dean
My Love - Florence & The Machine
There is nothing to describe Except the moon still bright against the worrying sky I pray the trees will get their leaves soon So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does? I don't know where to put my love
Inner Emigration - Daniel Kahn, Painted Bird (there is a reason why I chose a very Jewish song without any Yiddish nor Hebrew for Mr. Grant)
So make a kind of inner emigration It's a kind of shift accomplished easily We all have made our disassociations Whether on the job or in our family And what could be more irrelevant than nations When everywhere you go, it's buy or sell? But if we all make only inner emigrations Then everything will only go to hell
11:11 - Ben Barnes
I wish for you to be happy I wish for you to be free I wish for you to be fearless That's wishes one, two, and three And I won't wish to be yours or for you to be mine But I'll wish them all for you every time
Tumblr media
Dance the Night - Dua Lipa (while themes could be Grant, this wound up becoming a driving song. per the Wall Street/Main Street Treaty of 20XX, it's a Jake song)
Watch me dance, dance the night away My hеart could be burnin', but you won't see it on my face Watch me dancе, dance the night away (Uh-huh) I'll still keep the party runnin', not one hair out of place
March of the Jobless Corps - Daniel Kahn, Painted Bird (Jake speaks Yiddish. Jake is a union man TM. While I see and write Jake as the most observant of the system, he also loved stories of those Jewish secular socialists. Kahn and the Painted Bird represent Jake versus Grant's CEO materialism and Marc's violence.)
Well one, two, three, four Join the Marching Jobless Corps No work in the factories No more manufacturing All the tools are broke and rusted Every wheel and window busted Through the city streets we go Idle as a CEO Idle as a CEO
[Honestly, I listen to a lot of Daniel Kahn when I write Jake so just take a look at his albums and you'll get an idea]

Daniel Kahn and Jake Shulman-Ment Tom Traubert's Blues (in Yiddish Translation) 2023
I love Daniel Kahn's cover translations. He never translates literally. He always goes for the poetic vibe rather than the direct translation. It doesn't hurt that he also has a great voice and a cool stage presence.
