My Curatorial Internship at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago!
I began my Curatorial Internship on 6/7/21 bright and early as I drove my first day waking up at 5AM as I live in Wauconda, IL a northwest suburb of Chicago. MSI is in the heart of downtown Chicago, so the drive is usually an hour and half accounting for traffic. That sucked big time, so I took the train for the rest of my time so far. Luckily I only have to be in the office Monday/Tuesday which is bittersweet: my train ticket is $10 a day, parking at Barrington Station is $3.50 daily but what kicks my wallet in the teeth if my Lyft bill, usually around $50 from Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago to MSI and back. Thankfully my internship is paid thanks to Studio Institute which is my sponsor, a grant MSI received and SI how I found out about the position for the summer. I thought I would be working with a team of interns since this is a big project I am a part of, but believe it or not I am the sole Curatorial intern! It felt good to know that I did well in my interview and it wasn’t just a hunch, and to have the honor of being the sole recipient! Its been a number of years since there was a curatorial intern and with this in mind I knew I was going to work hard to pay them back for their faith in me. I do not say this lightly, as I am 28 years old now and opportunities like this I have learned are not offered to just any one off the street.
The Project? MSI is digitizing roughly 1,000 artifacts to be shown online on their website (COVID was a strong motivator for this as it hit Museums all over the world. They are passionate about reaching their audience!) Collections has over 35,000 artifacts to keep track of, and all it’s history is just written or printed in a large Accession’s Archive, and there is digital archive to work with. I am going to help with what I am assigned with gaining invaluable professional research experience, with a strong focus as well in writing for labels and anything else that is thrown my way! I am also making this blog conjunction for my school, Loyola University Chicago of which helped me get this position. This will be a long post, so buckle in as I share my weeks to bring you, and me up to date for next week, 7/19/21!
Week 1: 6/7-11/2021 | This position is 4 days a week, for a total of 28 hours. Part-time. My round-trip however with commuting turns a 7 hour work day into a 12 hour day from when I wake up until I drive home from Barrington Station. Thankfully the two days I work from home is a bit easier on commuting from upstairs to downstairs!
Monday: HR/Orientation/Introduction to Collections by Alexis, the talent manager at MSI. Your standard job introduction, but my first at a Museum.
Tuesday: In-depth Museum tour/explaining the research and writing work I would be doing/assisting Kathleen (Collections Director) in the vault*(storage, vault sounds cooler) cataloging.
Wednesday: Photographing Bike exhibit for transcription/beginning research work on first Accessions project on Firefighting artifacts by find corresponding files in Accessions archive, reading the materials in each folder to find relevant material to write in description about the item to put online. I scan the documents I find relevant, so that I can do that additional research and writing at home. This will be the plan going forward (research/cataloging the vault on Monday and Tuesdays) but there are plans to have me assist on additional projects and duties within the department and MSI as a whole.
Thursday: With the information gathered from scanning documents from each accessions folder, then at home I can look over each stapled bunch of materials of each item and then add bullet points of relevant information in a word document. That can then be shared with the Director, Curator and assistant curator to help them use the most relevant materials to weave the labels needed to put online for this historic artifacts.
Week 2: 6/14/18/2021 | Fridays are not included as that’s when I attend Zoom meetings with the program directors and liaison for Studio Institute which has over 40 interns around the country in Museums across the United States. I won’t lie... I got the best assignment in my opinion! This was tailor made for me! As an older student I am FULLY aware of what a incredible privilege it is to be paid to do something you truly love down to your bones.
Monday: I start at 9:15 but my train was late to unforeseen circumstances. I emailed my supervisor I would be in a hour later than usual and she appreciated the heads up. I continued pulling folders from the accessions archive, then scanning relevant materials. I would then staple the gathered materials and kept my work in order to mirror the worksheet log I was given for the artifacts in the fire fighting exhibit.
Tuesday: Getting in at my normal time I continued, and finished the worksheet log I was given for the Fire Fighting exhibit. I now have a large amount of material to review on my days working from home to provide bulleted points of relevant material that will assist the Collections team create the labels needed when selected materials are uploaded online. I would do five files at a time to stay organized and not bite off more than I could and get "lost in the sauce" as we would say in the Army. That way, a steady rhythm was established and I could better gauge my time per batch.
Wednesday: I worked from home continuing my task of added bulleted information points on artifacts. I am assuming that the items that have a extensive amount of reference materials will be those making the cut to be uploaded online once the project gets to that point. Made up the hour lost on Monday due to my train out of Barrington, IL running late.
Thursday: Still grinding away by going through the research materials I assembled from the archives in MSI to add bulleted points of relevant information on artifacts to make the lives of the Director, Curator, and assistant easier allowing them to focus on more advanced research and other duties.
Week 3: 6/21-25/2021
Monday: Continued transcription of the Fire Fighting Exhibit. Nearly finished with it. Working from home is getting better as I am getting a better pace of work and less distractions.
Tuesday: I was able to get some opportunities for front-facing guest interaction and educations as I gave my first MSI tour. Two individuals from my organization, the 501st Legion, came down from Green Bay for a Chicago vacation. They had seen my positive posts about being at MSI and wanted to come see it for themselves. I asked Dr. Saridakis if I could learn how to give a tour on my own, to which she agreed. In my inaugural tour I took them around the great hall's exhibits, being careful to focus on items of which I had some background in to better give a small education on the artifacts. My strength is in the Hall of Transportation in which houses the Spitfire, Stuka and new Boeing 727. On the floor I pointed out the Millburn and Tesla electric cars as well. After going at what seemed a quick pace, we made our way over to the Hall of Bicycles, and weaved back to the floor. I took them to U-505 which is my strongest exhibit. Military history is my focus, and I don't ever tire of going to see U-505. In the most surprise to my guests, they were granted a behind the scenes walk-through of Collections in which Dr. Saridakis kindly donated her time to open the vault for us. She accompanied me, but gave me the reigns to get a feel for my first guided walk-through of Collections which is a duty all in the department should be familiar, and comfortable doing. I feel I did well for my first time, and gained experience in doing the same for the following day for a larger, planned tour by mHub. I took my guests out to lunch where my supervisors did a few weeks ago. It ran over time, so I'll make up the hour later at home.
Wednesday: Today was the day of the big planned of tour by Chicago tech company, mHub. My supervisor was not available in the morning so I filled out some other documents and found other work to do until she came in. This was sorting through the former archivist's boxes of files and articles looking for relevant materials that would be of use to the registrar. I had been doing this the day before as well before my guests came in at 11AM. There was a A LOT of material, but there was plenty of relevant stuff, including a complete file on the cars, and motorcycles in the MSI collection which included a recent appraisal of each item in inventory. I found the motorcycles of interest and made copies for myself to be of use on future behind the scenes tours (you pick a handful of items scattered at various checkpoints to engage with guests about. There just isn't enough time to go row by row.) mHub was scheduled for 3:30, but didn't not come until 4ish. My recent work with the fire fighting artifacts proved critically relevant as one of the guests was working on technology for fire fighters to pull up a 3D schematic on a app to see where the beams, and wiring is without them having to hack through the walls to find it. He was very much interested in the various fire fighting artifacts and thankfully I was a part of his group throughout the tour. Exhibitions engineer Jeff brought out two 1930's Ediphones, and while he was setting up I had a lengthy chat with him regarding his duties and responsibilities at MSI which proved insightful.
Thursday: I wasn't as productive today as I wanted to be in part to some distractions in my personal life. I will make this time up on Saturday. Continued work on transcription of relevant facts to the fire fighting exhibit
Saturday: I finally finished the fire fighting exhibit items and look forward to trying my hand at writing short labels based on returning to the material I have. This label writing experience will be invaluable in such a professional capacity. It will be nice to have this skills honed, refined and on a professional level. I trudged the remaining artifacts, and put more time off the clock to finish so I can begin on my favorite exhibit, U505 on Monday!
Week 4: 6/28-7/2/2021
Monday: I came in and had my weekly 10AM meeting with Voula, and moved onto U-505/WWII items. Same as with the fire exhibit, finding files in the accession archive, scanning relevant materials to take home for work at home.
Tuesday: I continued scanning, and gather materials. At 1:00 PM I took photos of all the labels in the U-505 exhibit for transcription by one of the volunteers, Mary. I then at 2:30 I worked with Director McCarthy cataloguing some more artifact ranks in storage. At 4:10PM I asked if I could get a photo handling a textile artifact for both the experience of doing so and seeing one of U-505's flags not only in person, but to carefully handle, and touch. Director McCarthy and Dr. Saridakis both kindly indulged my request and it was a truly awesome experience for me. I also learned that there is a later train than I usually take. That bit of info is helpful just in case I ever miss the 5 o'clock train out of Chicago back to my home train station of Barrington, IL!
Wednesday: As I did with the firefighting exhibit and items, I continued bulleting down relevant facts and information. I created a new word doc just as I done previously with the Fire Fighting artifacts.
Thursday: Continued transcription. I look forward to trying my hand at writing some labels and short descriptions. I still can barely believe I am being paid to work on items I already love learning about.
Saturday: Made up 1 hour from Thursday.
Week 5: 7/5-9/2021
Monday: Unpaid holiday for MSI employees. I am going to work half a day today so I only have to work 4 hours later in the week to make up for today. I am going to look over my U505/WWII artifacts and see if any really stand out as candidates for getting labels and descriptions.
Tuesday: I came in Tuesday and had my weekly meeting with Voula. Since the program is half-way over at this point the decision for now is for me to focus on the U-505/WWII artifacts and to also focus on writing a few labels for some of the Fire Fighting exhibit artifacts. I also took photos of all the labels in the U-505 and will transcribe that exhibit to it is available in a word doc to be transferred to the digital site - one day. I then worked with Kathleen in storage to continue cataloging artifacts, in three hours we nearly inputted over 200 artifacts.
Wednesday: I came in and got to work on transcription since there are no more additional accession files to pull and scan. MSI has just brought on a new assistant curator for a year to help with the digitization of the archives and storage. It is a daunting task! But one that will streamline Collections at MSI and make pulling artifacts extremely easy and hopefully foster some excitement from the public online to see items that otherwise sit in a dark, temperature controlled room. I also had the honor of getting to write a pitch to put up a "pop up" U-505 exhibit up in downtown. That was very exciting to me, along with the confidence gained because of the trust to do that. I wrote a few drafts to which the Director edited down. Very happy to be useful with a project that is extremely relevant to my interests.
Thursday: Continued transcription of the U-505 exhibit and writing a few labels that will then be edited by the Curator. Being directly involved in what the public will learn from a artifact is very cool to me. Improving on working remotely, efficiently - making a decision right away in the morning after a shower to begin work is a great guard against procrastination and working late to fairly submit the hours for the day. A regular schedule when self set and stuck to is extremely effective.
Saturday: Continued work on the U-505 items from home.
Week 6: 7/12-16/2021
Monday: I started working right away after waking up. I want to finish my transcription of the U-505 exhibit which includes every wall panel, all artifacts and everything else in between. I went past midnight and just hit a stride, "in the zone, so to speak."
Tuesday: I worked through the night while on a roll. I didn't look at the clock, I just kept going! Reminded me of the old all-nighters I used to pull. I was excited to be finally complete with this project. I took it upon myself to transcribe the entire exhibit since it only existed on the walls and printed material. With it digitized this will be a tremendous help to the department. I finished it and even double checked Flickr for any photos I may have missed taking myself. I only missed only small panel, but all quotes, stories, artifacts... everything came to a 50 page, 20,000 word document. I look forward to seeing Voula's reaction when I print it out tomorrow! I also made a copy of just the artifacts for MSI so when they want to put some online they'll know what is theirs outright. In my previous job I worked 10 hour shifts so this felt familiar, I enjoy doing four 10-hour days to hit 40 back then and enjoy 3-day weekends. This is less hours, but I am grateful none-the-less to have the time to use for other projects, books and hobbies.
Wednesday: Voula's reaction to the massive transcription was great. I also placed the document in SharePoint so that anyone in Collections can access it. I am sure it will be a great aid in the future when a quick reference is needed for U-505. Today was also the MSI Employee picnic which was great. I took a couple pictures and video. Sodexo made me a Angus half pound burger which was great. I sat by myself since I came after our intern/departmental MSI zoom meeting held by Talent so we could learn how MSI is a collaborative effort and chat with the heads of other departments which was cool. I followed and email Mike Welsh to set up a tour of what Construction and Grounds does around the Museum. Most folks went to the picnic at noon, and our meeting didn't conclude until 1:10PM. Thankfully though Voula stayed a little after and we chatted at the table I was at. MSI redid the Smart Home area and it's a very nice shaded, little park. Definitely never been there before as a guest. Very cool to be a part of the "in-crowd." I took a longer lunch to take it all in.
Thursday: Since I busted my butt Monday into Tuesday and enjoyed yesterday I only had to do two hours today. I sat in the other half of the MSI intern/departmental Zoom meeting which featured Collections/Exhibitions and HR. I had the best chat with Exhibitions and the public relations managers. I will send emails to follow up with both of them as I find their work fascinating, and might as well - only here for a short time and it be an absolute waste to not take utter advantage of it. I cleaned up some of my Word documents and doubled check for syntax errors.
Thats it! You, and me, are now all up to date! I will continue to make weekly postings until its conclusion! I will also add some photos in the following posts, this is a long post so stay tuned, it will be less dense.

The Best Cheap Car Insurance
Car insurance is typically the largest expense of owning a car.
That means there’s room for big savings if we spend time getting the cost down.
Saving $3 on gas by driving another 10 minutes isn’t worth it. Saving $300 every year from getting a better insurance quote one time definitely adds up.
So how do you go about finding good coverage at an affordable price? Here are three top picks for cheap car insurance that’ll give you peace of mind on the road.
The 3 Cheapest Car Insurance Options
There’s a lot of options to get car insurance. And policies can get pretty complicated too. We break it all down in our guide to the best car insurance companies to get you started.
Out of all the options, here are the top three cheapest car insurance options available.
1. Esurance
Esurance’s lowest quoted rate comes in at $534 for six months. Keep in mind that quotes vary depending on a variety of factors, including a person’s driving record, age, and gender.
With its fantastic mobile app and easy to use website, Esurance does a good job of taking the headaches out of car insurance. The company offers auto insurance coverage in 43 states. You can combine your car insurance with other types of insurance to get a better rate.
Esurance also offers some extras in addition to the regular car insurance coverage.
Roadside assistance – If you do a lot of travel or highway driving, it might be worth checking out the roadside assistance option. With roadside assistance added to your policy, Esurance will cover up to $75 for things like lockout service, tire changes, and towing.
Rental coverage – This add-on covers the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is stolen or in the shop for repairs. Rental coverage maxes out at $3,000 and extends 45 days.
Gap coverage – After a car accident, many people receive the rude awakening that their totaled vehicle is worth less than what they owe on it, forcing them to come up with the money to fill the gap. With gap coverage, Esurance pays a maximum of 25 percent to bridge any gaps if a car is totaled.
Another great feature offered by Esurance is its DriveSense program. This uses an app that monitors a motorist’s behavior behind the wheel, checking for speed, sudden braking, and time behind the wheel. Responsible drivers who log good behavior on the DriveSense app are eligible for discounts. Basically, you get paid for being a good driver.
2. Progressive
Progressive’s lowest rate is $556 for six months. As with other insurance companies, rates vary from one individual to another.
The company offers a wide range of insurance products, and it’s the third biggest car insurance company in the United States.
In addition to the standard car insurance coverage most people buy, Progressive also offers some extra forms of coverage that might be worth looking into.
Pet protection – Do you usually have a four-legged passenger in your car? If so, Progressive’s pet injury protection might be a necessity. If your pet is injured in a car accident, this extra coverage will cover the cost of the veterinarian.
Gap insurance – Like some other car insurance providers, Progressive offers coverage that bridges the gap between a totaled vehicle’s fair market value and what the driver owes on it. Progressive will pay up to 25 percent over the vehicle’s value in the event it’s declared a total loss.
Deductible savings bank – Motorists who buy both collision and comprehensive coverage are eligible to participate in the deductible savings bank program. With this program, Progressive lowers your deductible by $50 every six months you drive without filing a claim. If you keep at it, you can even reduce your deductible to zero.
Progressive also has a good driving behavior rewards program. Through its Snapshot program, it gives motorists discounts based on their speed and other driving habits.
You might also be able to save by taking advantage of Progressive’s multi-line or multi-car discounts. For example, if you’re married or share a household with teens or a partner, you can usually save money by bundling all your policies together.
3. Travelers
Travelers quoted $1,155 for six months of coverage. This rate can go up or down based on an individual’s driving record and other factors.
Travelers insurance has a good reputation on consumer review sites. It’s an especially good option for people who want to purchase various types of coverage from the same provider.
In addition to standard auto insurance, Travelers offers a number of optional extra coverage.
Gap insurance – As with other auto insurers, Travelers lets you purchase gap coverage that will pay for the difference between the value of your totaled vehicle and what you still owe on it.
Premier new car replacement – If your vehicle is five years old or newer and is declared totaled after an accident, premier new car replacement coverage will replace it.
IntelliDrive – This requires you to use an app that monitors you while you drive. Practice good driving habits for 90 days and receive a 20 percent discount on your car insurance.
Like a lot of other insurance companies, Travelers offers multi-line and multi-car discounts. You might also be able to save by paying your bill online, as Travelers offers discounts for people who opt for electronic billing.
If you drive a hybrid vehicle, you should also include that information when you ask for a quote. Travelers may offer you money off your policy if your vehicle is a fuel efficient hybrid or electric model.
How to Choose the Best Car Insurance for the Best Price
Of course, you don’t just want cheap car insurance. Rather, you want affordable coverage that’s still comprehensive. Here are three considerations to keep in mind as you shop.
1. Type of Coverage
Car insurance coverage is more complicated than it needs to be. There’s a bunch of extra stuff that’s completely unnecessary, especially if you’re looking to save some money.
Here are our rules when getting coverage:
Liability coverage = Get as much as possible.
Deductible = Keep this low if you have regular accidents or don’t have cash on hand to cover a higher deductible. Otherwise, get a higher deductible.
Underinsured motorist bodily and property damage = Skip this unless it’s required by the state you’re living in.
Personal injury protection = Skip this unless it’s required by the state you’re living in.
Extras = Skip these too unless you personally get a lot of value from it.
In other words, max out the liability coverage based on your budget, get the deductible that you need, then skip everything else. That will get you the cheapest policy with the most value.
If you need an even cheaper policy, choose a higher deductible. Only lower the liability coverage if you absolutely have to.
We break all this down in our best car insurance guide.
2. Reviews
Before you simply opt for the cheapest coverage available, Take some time to see what other people have to say about the provider. Places like the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Reports make this pretty easy.
The insurance companies we mentioned above all have good reviews.
Definitely do some research if you’re considering a quote from a smaller insurance company.
3. Your Personal Details
Insurance quotes are tailored to individuals, and there are several factors that will influence how much you pay. Some of them you have control over, some of them you don’t.
For example, the make and model of your vehicle plays a big role in the cost of your auto insurance. You can anticipate paying a lot more for a Porsche than a Toyota. Likewise, you’ll probably pay less for an older vehicle than a brand new car fresh off the lot. As a general rule, pick a car that’s boring in order to get a lower cost of insurance.
Other factors that influence your car insurance rates include:
Where you live
Age
Gender
Driving history
Marital status
How far you drive each month
In some states, your credit score can impact how much you pay for car insurance
While most of these items aren’t easy to change, you could consider a few options:
Is there a way to drive less? Living closer to work could easily save money even if rent or a mortgage is more expensive.
Are you considering a move to another state? Apply for a few quotes with a zip code in that area to see if the rates are that different.
You should also never hesitate to ask for discounts. Not all insurance companies advertise their full menu of available discounts, which is why it doesn’t hurt to ask. In some cases, you can save by purchasing multiple policies from the same insurance company.
Shop Around for Multiple Quotes
It’s really easy to overpay for auto insurance. Shop around and gather multiple quotes.
I’d get at least 3 quotes before making a final decision.
Also keep in mind that your driving behavior plays a big role in how much you’ll pay. While you can’t control things like age and gender, you can definitely practice good driving habits behind the wheel.

While you can’t control things like age and gender, you can definitely practice good driving habits behind the wheel.

currently, i’m sitting in bed... taylor swift’s “reputation” is on repeat (what else is new?) and i have my hair twisted into a weird bun because i’m treating myself to a lush hair mask (marilyn hot wax treatment leftovers are the dream). tonight, i had a minor freak out about our finances with our texas trip sneaking up in just a few weeks and in the middle of ranting about credit card debt and worrying because i need to budget the electric bill in, i realized that i am awful at taking care of myself. i live my life under this guise that i am super healthy because i eat a diet that allows me to lose weight and i’m in a good spot because i have a job making $18+/hr but truthfully... my life is a mess. i am always anxious and panicky, i worry about everything and everyone and i barely remember to take a moment to be thankful to be breathing most days. it isn’t a healthy way to live, and i can recognize that. i want to be perpetually as stoked as i was the day i realized that my favorite sweater looked cute with my men’s boxers-turned-pjs.
essentially-- i want to start working on things to make me feel better, healthier and more put together. in the middle of my venting to nathaniel tonight, i started going in circles and realized how easy it would be to fix some of the issues i find myself worrying about.
getting a real schedule going: we are all over the place with our “chores”... grocery shopping, keeping the apartment clean, doing laundry... we don’t have a set schedule. i’m working on getting stable habits going with us again, starting with grocery shopping every friday after work, so we have food and we don’t spend all weekend eating out and wasting money.
planning: i’m buying a planner after i get paid this week, and i’m going to start planning ahead. what days i’m going to focus on schoolwork, what days i am going to work out and what routines i’m going to do, what meals we are going to cook when... the list goes on and on. i live without what is coming next constantly and i think if i can change that, i’ll be a lot happier.
recommitting: the grocery list is made-- it is very keto friendly and there are exactly 0 protein treats on it. i live on carbkilla bars/quest cookies and while they fit my macros, i think i will be happier if i can kick those and get back to my more whole, filling snacks. i downloaded the app i used to track my food with and i am going to go back to doing that, in hopes that i can finally start losing weight again. i’m also going to try hard to stick to my work outs... starting with 2 times a week and eventually moving my way up to 4-5 times a week.
let’s go, self, you got this.

Particular Money Management
budgeting app Please well then, i'll start with few scenarios.
Over the end of the month as well as early of next month, consumers are rushing to banks. They are really busy with home loan monthly payment, car loan installment, credit card settlement, etc . At the end of their stressful monthly schedule of forking over day, one most popular concern pop up in their head: The amount of do I have left for the rest of the actual month? Does it sound familiar to your account? Are you one of them who go in along with out of several banks when you finally receive your salary, to pay off your bills? Ought to all that for a reason therefore you are happy with it, it is excellent. But the problem is, that is NOT okay for most of us.
budgeting app
You walk into a store. You see something eyes finding and catching, something you have been wanted to unique for so long. A sales team approaches you and commenced his/her sales take, to remember those "If you purchase at this point and make a full payment currently, you will get these free gifts additionally..... " nice offers. You actually wanted to pull out your credit playing card and have it on consumer credit. But wait! If you got it, you might have to sacrifice your own personal lunch, no more month stop get away trip, no more golf instruction during your weekend, etc .
The particular scenarios can go on and in but it is not the purpose of that material to upset people. Therefore , let us move on.
The Hole The poor are getting poorer whilst the rich are getting richer. Will be reason behind this scenario? The answer is very simple. Rich people treat funds differently from poor people. Loaded people manage their money really differently from how the indegent manage it. Before we have into the detail of how to overpower your money like rich men and women, we need to do a little self test.
What is Your Financial Status? With businesses, we look at the economical status of a company searching at their balance sheet. "balance sheet" is a piece of paper that files incomes and expenses of an company during a particular time time of operation. Typically the status of a company is definitely displayed by a number whole the sheet. It is college thinks company have in sense of balance by taking all incomes take away off all expenses.
Did you know you have a balance sheet of your own? That is definitely right, your bank report. It records all orders of money that go in in addition to out of your account. Let us perform very simple exercise now. Examine your balance in your account. Will the number show at the end of your personal little booklet make you extremely pleased (Ok, you can check it on the net as well. )? Do you think that will number is sufficient? How many time can you survive if your supervisor suddenly decides to set you off? Your superior will give you decent reasons for in which. But the truth is because you are expensive in their mind now. Your salary is often a big number in their "balance sheet", categorize under "Expenses".
Right here is Basic Idea Most people certainly not manage their money well given it seems difficult to manage or even it just doesn't seem important to manage. The good news is, everyone can take care of their money equally well seeing that those who are good at it. Anyone with good at it at the moment because you do not know how. You might have to you of manage your money, although does it effective? You might have been paid to a good university. You might have became yourself a good degree. Preferred, you never learn how to manage your hard earned dollars well in university or college. At most, the particular professors teach business university student how to calculate the balance piece and manage it to get other people, for the rich persons.
I'm not implying you don't need to study. I powerfully believe that knowledge is the method to obtain power. With great electric power, you can do mighty things. Except, maybe it is time for you to get started manage your money like individuals who manage it well to get their way out of the nuisance situations that I mentioned above? I do believe for most of us, the money we have is usually insufficient. If you feel that you have already got enough money to live together with, you may want to take it to a future level. If you are constantly shorter than money during the end with the month, or you think you could have enough money and still demand a little extra, this is the accurate book for you.
Self Understanding - Knowing Who You Are as well as Why You Are Who You Are Remember that My partner and i ask about your financial condition previously? That is because you need to know your location before we begin. If you know whether the money you may have is sufficient or not, then you will become a boat lost in the underwater without a compass to position you a direction.
We are who all we are and where i'm for a reason. So you have no enough money to live using. Blame it to your training level. Blame it to the boss who never provides a good increment or promo. Blame it to the fiscal condition. Blame it to help fate. Please forgive my family for a little detour the following. I believe most of us went through quiz during our school time frame. What was the most common reason for those that did not manage to get excellent grade on their score list? It usually went like these:
If I had the required time, I could have solved considerably more questions..... If I had plenty of to study, I could have learned those few chapters i always did not manage to cover..... The rainy day was so hot regardless if that I could not concentrate..... It turned out the season finale for that dilemma.....
The list can go on and about but I think those handful of "reasons" are enough to signify you the main reason why you was unable your exam or to be able to get a good mark. You are suitable, those are all EXECUSES! In the event you did not have enough time to conclude that last few questions, for the reason that you did not manage your efforts well. Why you did not analysis those few chapters you think might be important before the exam? Couldn't you begin study a few more days prior? Why do you have to watch typically the finale just the day previous to exam? As a conclusion, everthing comes down to how you manage your situation. So what do your knowledge, your boss, economic ailment and fate got to complete with you for not having ample money? Before blame the item on other reasons, take a look at your individual good self and devote more time to to do a little brainstorming the reason you behave like what you are conducting.
I was talking about managing a problem. We all manage a situation in a very certain pattern, base with some assumptions that misguided in our memory. Then most of us make a decision, thinking that is the best strategy to resolve the conflict, for getting ourselves out of the trouble, to realize a desired outcome. The explanation that we make those presumptions, decisions, etc is because basic on our knowledge, past emotions, that seems to be the only way. Most of us experienced it before all of us feel comfortable with it. Then, stuff happen exactly the way you want it to be..... subconsciously. Without a doubt! Subconsciously.
Psychologically, we all determined by our subconscious imagination. We act and conduct themselves the way we feel comfortable with. Often the technical term that represents this is comfort zone. It is all of our subconscious that makes us lodge at our comfort zone. How many moments, when you want to earn this extra money while doing some different investment, joint venture or even commencement a business and you really acquire that extra money that you sought? How many times that you read about someone else lost their term saving in stocks or perhaps businesses? Do you ever wonder the reason? Is it because of fate? Will it be about you go into a market for a wrong time? Basically, this is due to they have not prepared their selves. Subconsciously they know in order to fail somehow and in the bottom, their "wish" come true. This is due to our brain is filled with all of kind of failure experiences and now we all want to stay in an easy state. As a conclusion, the results turn out to be bad because subliminally, we want it to turn available bad, so we can sleep and not to worry when the small business will success and get in trouble one day.
Business Owner Keep in mind! Owning a business producing real products will soon only be often the playground of major members in their field. The good get stronger. The vulnerable is diminishing one by one. You need to take a look at automotive industries, microchip industries, telecommunication industries, and so on Strong players remain robust. There is hardly a room eventually left for small or completely new players. Good products and services probably guarantee your market situation with the changing of purchaser behavior, everyday! If the craze continues, there will soon possibly be only few choices for cars and trucks, computers, cell phones, etc from which to choose. Does your business stand the chance to survive and get strong yearly few decades?
Employee Beware! Tricky working at work do not important guarantees you job security and safety today. The world is adjusting faster than you could visualize. What you have learned at school will soon be obsolete. You will be the lucky one when your company gives you training for nonstop improvement. Even so, aren't you actually tired of trading your time along with a fixed salary? You will before long face the pressure that they are lay off as your paycheck increases. Companies are finding strategies to reduce their expenses performed form to keep their products and also services competitive, considering the soaring cost of materials, energies, and so forth
The Path to Wealth has continued to develop! New age has arrived. Today is a age of information. It is not anymore about products and services. It is not about being hard work along with pension fund. Today, good plans sell. People trade having information today. If you have good ideas, you could be on the bundle list within a year or maybe shorter. Conventional business normally takes years. It is almost impossible those of you that work for others.
New Age Income Management Put your enough cash in a bank is not really a simple way00 of manage your money while in information age. The monetary inflation rate can easily bypass bank's interest rate. Working is for people that want to stay where they are really forever. How many employees to have increment in percentage that is definitely greater than inflation rate? Regardless of whether it is greater than inflation charge, by how much?
Therefore , it can be no longer about saving money, examine hard and get a job. In order to know how to live a well-off life, at least at your systems, you need to equip yourself with a proper dollars management technique. New age income management is not about chopping expenses, manage your debt as well as get a financial planner. Its more than that. It is not about making others to manage your money. It can be about you being the fiscal planner yourself. It is regarding how to minimize your expenses in addition to maximize your incomes.

Mr. Money Mustache, UBER Driver
Special Surprise: Did you know there is now an MMM Android App? It’s really good. Beautiful offline reading. Alerts you to new articles automatically, if you want. Thousands of users already. Free. Many more features (plus an Apple version) to come. It’s on the Google Play Store.
—-
About two years ago, I switched from taking my personal car to the airport, to hailing Ubers and Lyfts. The math of it was pretty simple: Uber was cheaper than paying for my driving and parking*. And that was before the considerable joy and time savings of not having to park in the airport lot and cram in among the huddled masses in the shuttle buses. Nowadays I sit in the back and get some work done like an Executive, leaving the driving to someone else.
Once I arrive at my destination city, these ride sharing services have replaced at least 90% of instances where a car rental would be useful. Between walking, renting a bike, public transit and calling a Lyft, a car rental is only useful for destinations deep in the boondocks such as a ski resort or a distant beach cabin. Which is another great improvement, since renting a car at an airport has never been a fun experience.
But during all these Luxury Executive rides, I’d often get to talking with the driver. We would talk about life, family, money and business. I always inquired about their experience with rideshare driving, and the response was inevitably something like this:
UBER DRIVER: “Oh, it’s pretty good. On a good day I’ll make a hundred bucks, sometimes even two hundred if I really work it and stay up late.”
MMM: “Is that your profit after subtracting the cost of driving?”
UBER DRIVER: “No, that doesn’t include gas. But I’ll only use, like, not even a full tank – maybe thirty bucks”
“Hmm”, I would think to myself.
“If this driver is burning through $30 of gas, (twelve gallons), they’re probably covering over 250 miles. Whether they realize it or not, it’s costing them $125 in direct car costs before even accounting to the damage to their health or the risk of injury. Thus, the net profit might be as low as $50 for a big day on the road, or five bucks an hour.”
There’s no way Uber could be such a successful company if the pay rate were really this low. Is there?
But on the other hand, some of my Uber drives to the airport have included a Dodge Ram pickup truck (V-8 engine, fancy wheels, bought brand new on credit), a BMW X5 and even a Hummer H3 (with over 250,000 miles on the odometer). Maybe people really are that uninformed about the cost of driving. As my friend Bill said when we talked about this:
“Imagine developing a company specifically to take advantage of people’s ignorance of how expensive it really is to drive their own car. What would this company look like? “
(the answer is of course that it would look like very much like Uber or any other ridesharing company)
To resolve this mystery (and as a way of getting some test miles on my new electric car), Mr. Money Mustache decided to go deep undercover in September 2016, and sign up as a driver for both Uber and Lyft services.
The Initiation
Using another driver’s referral code, I signed up on the Uber system and started to follow the instructions. I needed a background check, medical exam, car safety inspection and a few other daunting things. Luckily, Uber runs facilities called “Greenlight Centers” which put all this stuff in one place. The closest one to me was about 40 miles away in Denver, so I charged up my new Leaf and headed down.
When I arrived, I found an interesting scene that nicely personifies our new sharing economy. It was a mashup of an Apple Store and the DMV. Modern design and furniture, good music and glossy tablets everywhere, combined with an ocean of slightly desperate and bored looking people waiting to start their new driving careers. And Mr. Money Mustache, trying to blend in.
It was a funny feeling, spending those three precious hours of my Tuesday morning, waiting in queues and filling out forms. I was keen to learn about the driver experience and how things work in the New Economy. But I also felt a bit of the nervous “I’m applying for a new job” energy of the other applicants, and like a bit of a fraud for being here when I had absolutely no interest in truly having a job.
There was a trendy little cafe in the corner of the room, so I strolled over and picked up a Clif bar and a coffee. Due to my naive privilege as a former tech worker, I expected it all to be free – after all, don’t all offices offer free coffee and snacks, along with a keg of local beer and another tap for Kombucha? But a man popped out from around the corner and rung me up for $3.85. On top of that, it was a bland coffee in a small cup. This was an interesting reminder that working in a lower-training job is a different world than the one you and I probably both inhabit, here at the top of the economy.
When the process was finally done, my 25-year-old Uber concierge looked up from his iPad and issued me a genuinely warm congratulations and we shook hands.
“So that’s it?”, I asked
“Yeah! That’s it! You could go out and get in your car start making some money RIGHT NOW!”
“Hmmm…”
“Nah”, I thought to myself. “Eighty miles of driving plus three hours in an office building is more than enough wasted indoor time for me for the next little while.”
The spoiled retiree in me loves hard work, but only the right kind of hard work. The sedentary locked-indoors variety of work always falls to the bottom of the list. As you can tell by the low frequency of these blog posts.
My First Ride
Eventually, I was ready to give it a whirl. I cleaned up my car, stuck the Uber decal on the windshield, put on some nice clothes, mounted my phone on a sturdy dashboard clamp, and fired up the app. Within minutes, I had my first ring.
RIDE REQUESTED! John, 5 minutes away.
The ring was deafeningly loud, because (as I later learned after half an hour of looking unsuccessfully for a way to change it) the Uber app overrides your ring volume setting and sets it to !!MAXIMUM!! I was so startled that I could hardly slide the “accept” button, but I eventually got safely on the road.
I recognized the address as Longmont’s “Pumphouse” brew pub, right downtown. I headed down the hill and scoped the area, and eventually found John. As he hopped in the car I slid the “start trip” button and his destination was revealed as the local Marijuana shop, just 1.9 miles away away.
John and I exchanged pleasant conversation and he was impressed by the quick silence of the electric car. I dropped him off at Native Roots and then parked nearby, expecting another fare to pop up just as quickly.
Ride 1: 5 minutes waiting, 5 minutes driving, 1.2 miles unpaid, 1.9 miles paid. Net fare to me: $3.37
But the second fare wasn’t quite as quick. Fifteen minutes later, the Uber app rang again. It was John, now properly restocked and thrilled that I was still there in the weed shop parking lot. We headed back to the Pumphouse.
Ride 2: 15 minutes waiting, 5 minutes driving, 1.9 miles paid. Net fare to me: $3.37 … plus TIP $5.00!
Hey this wasn’t so bad: that five dollar tip really brought up the average. I was thirty minutes into my career and up about 12 bucks, minus five miles of car costs.
After another five minutes of idle time, the app rang again. This time it was a suburban address listed as 12 minutes (which turned out to be almost four miles) away. I decided to take the ride anyway, in the spirit of experimentation.
I got to the house, but nobody was there. After a minute, I used the Uber app to send the customer a text message. “Oh sorry!”, he said, “My phone GPS isn’t working well because we’re inside so it probably shows us in the wrong place! We’re just on the next street.”
I drove around a bit more and eventually found the young couple, and the app revealed a nice surprise: they were headed all the way to Boulder, which was over 12 miles from this part of Longmont. Surely now I would start earning the big bucks.
After 24 minutes of smooth, expert driving and pleasant conversation, I dropped them off at a restaurant. But I was surprised to see that the total wasn’t that impressive:
Ride 3: 10 minutes waiting, 4 miles unpaid, 12.4 miles paid. Net fare to me: $13.96. No Tip.
Driving in the Happening City
Now I was in Boulder, which has a much bigger scene than Longmont. Everybody is rich, every night is a big night, Colorado University is right downtown and it’s all action – there are no real suburbs. Due to high rider demand, the city operates in a perpetual “Surge Mode” which means Uber Fares are 20-30% more lucrative, and there is virtually no wait time for fares. And now, I was right downtown. So the app shrieked its notification tone immediately.
The customer was only a mile away, but due to the incredible slowness of trying to drive a 14-foot-long, 3300 pound Racing Wheelchair in a dense city it took me a lot of slow gliding in traffic and waiting at long traffic lights to get there. It was a couple of younger guys, heading back downtown.
We slogged through the dense traffic yet again at roughly one third of bicycling speed, and I earned my five dollar fare.
The app rang again, and I saw from the map it was yet another non-downtown person, probably looking for another ride downtown.
I decided not to play this game anymore, contributing to car traffic in a city that needs fewer cars. So I let this ride request go to another driver and set my destination to Longmont, hoping to find a customer heading that way so I could get paid for the ride home. There were none.
So I flew the Leaf back along the highway to home, and stopped at the grocery store to pick up some fresh food and a free battery charge for the car.
Total stats for the day:
4 Rides 1:51 hours 18.6 miles unpaid 17.2 miles paid $32 including tips ~$18 of car costs roughly $7 per hour net
Ongoing observations
After joining Uber as a driver, it was easy to add on a Lyft license: you can submit scans or photos of the same examination info to both companies. So over the next few months, I fired up both Uber and Lyft apps to do a bit more driving and collect some more observations. I had a lot of fun, but made very little money.
One time, I was summoned by a 13-year-old girl coming out of the middle school, effectively turning me into Mr. Schoolbus Dad. After finding her in the school lineup, she directed me to the elementary school, where we picked up her little brother. I dropped them both off safely at home in a rusty suburban area nearby.
Another ride was from a college student, deep in the Colorado U campus. It took me forever to navigate the throngs of after school foot and vehicle traffic and find this young lad in the crowd. During the ensuing 3MPH transit of Boulder, I couldn’t help but remark, “Wow! I apologize for how slow this trip is going. I’m usually on my bike when I cross Boulder, which is a lot faster.” Our final destination was a strip mall, and he directed me meticulously through the entire parking lot so he could be let off within 20 feet of the front door of the restaurant. End fare for about 35 minutes of work, even with surge pricing, was another six bucks. My resolve to avoid driving cars in Boulder was reinforced.
My favorite times to be a driver were Friday nights. It was fun to feel the energy of people going out on the town, and find out what was going on. I could see Uber driving to be a good escape for single people looking to meet new friends (or romances), because I almost always got along well with the customers, often exchanging business cards or email addresses with people when we found something in common. On longer rides with people over 30, the topic almost invariably led to life, business, and money, which led to Mustachianism, which led to me admitting my secret identity. Thus, some of my past Uber customers may even be reading this article today(?)
But in the end, it was hard to stay motivated to keep doing this experiment. There is just usually something better to do than driving around in a car, and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice too much of my life to gather more data. And with the financial gain of rideshare driving being negligble, I am surprised that there are so many people who do it.
How to Make the Most of a Low-Profit Situation
Still, as with everything in life, I did my best to optimize Uber driving for both fun and money. From my experience as well as reading online forums, the best way you can do it is:
Use the referral and bonus system heavily. Actual driving doesn’t pay well, but I have seen bonuses pop up on my app offering between $100-$500 to refer other drivers. There are also “weekly guarantee” offers that come up occasionally, offering more pay in exchange for meeting a certain threshold.
Use the lowest cost and most fuel-efficient car you can find. Uber requires you to have a fairly new (under 10 years) car, so get something on the older side of that spectrum, but with low miles. A 2009 Prius, for example, uses less than half the fuel of most cars of similar size.
Focus your driving around on “Surge Pricing”. By watching the app throughout the days and months, you will learn when your area enters periods of higher demand. Special events like Halloween, late weekend nights or major league sports events are popular times.
Try to find trips involving highways. Since you get paid mostly by the mile, you earn almost ten times more more money at 60 MPH than you make in on a long trip through central city where you might average only 6 MPH.
Experiment with the “set destination” feature to filter for rides going your way. Taking fares with you on your commute to work or to an airport.
Make the most of your downtime: there will still be lots of waiting between fares. If you bring a book, podcast, laptop or make business-related calls that help you learn a trade that pays more than driving, you can get yourself into a more lucrative trade.
Suggestions for Uber and Lyft
During the course of this experiment, I happened to receive emails from relatively senior people at both Uber and Lyft for unrelated reasons. So I took the opportunity to make some suggestions to make things friendlier for drivers:
Report the total driving time and miles for each ride and each shift, clearly specifying paid and unpaid miles and hours.
Provide an drivers an estimate of the car costs incurred, and estimated hourly earnings after these costs
Allow drivers to specify the types of rides they are willing to accept. For example, “only ring me for riders within 1 mile”, or “I would like to be paid for for both pickup mileage and rider mileage.”
Provide drivers with the details of where the person is going, or at least how long of a ride it is. Right now, Uber has all this incredibly useful information at the time of booking, but deliberately withholds it from the driver.
I was surprised that none of these suggestions got anywhere. This was a disappointment to the Economic Libertarian in me, because it seems obvious that an open market between buyer and seller is the key to more efficiency.
In fact, early in my driving career I learned how much the unpaid driving was hurting my profitability so I stopped accepting distant fares. The app quickly sent me this note:
Yeah, right. How about you just stop ringing me with fares that are ridiculously far away, instead?
When these companies deliberately tilt the field, they are being sneaky, which causes them to lose public trust, which causes the public to vote in a bunch of sclerotic regulation to protect the drivers and the public. If you, as a company, just avoid being a dick to people in the first place and treat them with complete openness and good old-fashioned honesty, they are more likely to let you run free.
Since I started this experiment a year ago, Uber has fallen into a world of trouble and bad publicity. Their internal culture of sexual harassment was blown wide open, along with the misdeeds of the wild and temperamental former CEO. From specific programs to evade government regulation to annoying treatment of drivers, Uber triggered a widespread backlash which became the #deleteuber campaign. Saying “Uber” is now a bit like uttering the words “ConAgra” or “Philip Morris” or “Exxon”.
Meanwhile, from the very beginning I noticed a friendlier tone in the way Lyft operates – see this 2016 interview with Lyft more laid-back founder John Zimmer.
In the End..
In general, I really want companies like Uber and Lyft (and Tesla, AirBnb, Google, Amazon and many of the other tech companies that have been stirring things up so much lately) to succeed, because the benefits to all of us greatly outweigh the inconvenience of the disruption.
For example, some people worry about what will happen to driving jobs as self-driving vehicles gradually take over. But I’m excited about the ways this can make our lives safer, quieter, and less expensive as we give up on owning personal cars, ride bikes much more, and use automated cars as a service whenever the bike is impractical. Technology provides a lumpy ride, but it also provides change which is an essential ingredient in every human life to avoid getting into a rut. So, share on.

* this sentence surely made you ask, “but what about the BUS, Mustache?!?” – good question. Of course I’d always choose biking, then public transit as the first two options, but the airport is 45 miles away (well over 2 hours by bike) and the bus requires a transfer in Denver, which makes it even slower than biking. Also, both Uber and Lyft have referral programs which give you credit for referring friends – I still have a few credits in my Uber account.
If you want to try Uber or Lyft, sign by randomly choosing one of these codes from friends, and you’ll get $5-10 off of your first ride (and give a small surprise to some of the members of the MMM-HQ coworking space!)
