idk maybe I’m just a bitch but I feel like secular American Jews (and a lot of practicing Jews but I notice it most amongst the ones who aren’t) are always claiming this and that is “Jewish culture”. and then 90% of the time it is either “Eastern European immigrant to the Bronx” culture or “Israeli fetishizing the whole concept of being Middle Eastern” culture.
#mercy.txt#I get to say this because one side of my family is literally Eastern European Jewish immigrants to the Bronx#and I love bagels with lox. they’re just not Jewish culture I’m sorry!#I think when you’re a religious/more observant Jew the lack of homogeneity in Judaism becomes more clear to you#because there are the different denominations plus all of the Haredi sects#and of course I’m aware that Jews around the world practice differently and incorporate local cultures into their Judaism#sadly it seems like a lot of American Jews are ignorant of this.#or they’re insecure about not being able to do the bare minimums of Jewish religion so they call it a ‘culture’ instead bc that’s easier#I don’t know!#I have nothing against secular Jews#you just have to keep in mind that Judaism is a religion not a singular experience we all had/have.#don’t even get me started on Israeli secularism. I’ll maul something. anyways.
