AU where Fukuzawa, teased once again by Fukuchi for being such a loner, decides to get a little catboy just for company. Emphasis on little. So he orders one from catboys r us dot com, and when the box arrives he expects to open it to find a cute little kitten... but finds a cat young man instead.
Ranpo is wild and energetic and destructive - and way too big for any of the supplies Fukuzawa got in preparation. He's determined to call the company once he gets Ranpo down from the top of the fridge, then when he gets Ranpo untangled from the miniblind pull cord, then when he gets Ranpo to stop yowling loud enough to alarm the neighbors - and on and on until it's already too late in the evening to call.
When Fukuzawa's finally able to sit down and rest he's covered in scratches and his house is in shambles. Fukuzawa's not sure if Ranpo's worn himself out or if he's just plotting his next move, but he's grateful the little menace is at least finally, finally holding still. And watching Fukuzawa. It's actually the first time Ranpo's really looked at him since he arrived, so immediately preoccupied with the once neat apartment as he'd been.
Slowly he crawls his way over to Fukuzawa's side. And nudges his head into Fukuzawa's hand.
Fukuzawa has half a mind to throw him out the nearest window, but, if he's honest with himself, he's been dying to pat Ranpo all day. Despite his streak of devastation Ranpo is so adorable he's barely managed to scold him. So against his better judgment he runs his hand carefully over Ranpo's hair. Ranpo's tail rises into a happy curl. He snuggles up beside Fukuzawa like he hasn't spent the day shredding anything he could get his claws on (including Fukuzawa), flattening his ears so Fukuzawa can stroke his hair better, turning his face up and pressing happily into the attention.
A little warning voice in Fukuzawa's head says he shouldn't be rewarding Ranpo's behavior. But there was something about the way Ranpo had glanced at him in the moment before he gave in and stroked his head. It wasn't an apology. Ranpo seemed to think he'd done nothing particularly wrong, which made his expression - an expectation of rejection - all the stranger a sight. So he ignores the voice and indulges himself.
Ranpo is too big for the bed Fukuzawa bought him. While Fukuzawa considers this Ranpo climbs under the covers of Fukuzawa's futon like he owns it, and Fukuzawa doesn't have the energy to argue. He'll call the company in the morning.
But the morning is Sunday morning. He resigns himself to another day of chasing Ranpo around. Ranpo is delighted with pancakes for breakfast, barely gets in the way at all while Fukuzawa's cooking. Actually, Ranpo's downright cooperative for most of the morning. He still eyes the furniture like he wants to see the color of its insides but he forgoes causing havoc in favor of gluing himself to Fukuzawa. He wants to play, or he wants to be patted, or he wants to climb Fukuzawa (he figures out this is Ranpo wanting to be picked up and held after the third time and wonders if part of the problem is that he's not well-versed in caring for other creatures), and with every bright-eyed stare from Ranpo's upturned face Fukuzawa feels his weak, treacherous heart growing more taken with the rambunctious adolescent catboy they'd mixed up with his actual order.
"Maybe this is for the best," Fukuzawa mutters to himself, Ranpo laying across his lap and batting at his scarf. "I couldn't possibly have handled you as a kitten if you're this adorable now."
Ranpo flushes to his hair. But then he smiles, bright and happy, and Fukuzawa blinks down at him in surprise.
"Can you understand me a little?" He scratches Ranpo's head and gets a pleased mew in response. "What a bright thing you are."
Ranpo can in fact understand him completely. The only mistake the company made in the mixup was not watching Ranpo close enough when he was returned to the factory after the deaths of his former owners. It was Ranpo who put himself into the box, leaving no trace but a computer error that would (with luck) be fixed and accounted for without displacing any other catboys from good homes. A clever little escape from the fate that awaited him.
Catboys were not supposed to understand, nor were they supposed to talk, nor were they supposed to be able to create clever little computer errors and escape into the arms of lonely former assassins. Ranpo is not a normal catboy. His former owners were aware of and welcomed this, but no one since had been pleased with the development. This one too, despite all of his strangely tolerant acceptance of Ranpo so far, would probably be angry at being sent a defective catboy.
But it's hard not to talk. It's hard not to talk when the apartment has miniblinds that haven't been opened in the three years Fukuzawa has lived in it because he's so used to operating in darkness it hasn't occurred to him to enjoy the sun now that he can. It's hard not to talk when Fukuzawa has nothing to entertain himself with but a sword and a few books and a phone like he's some kind of monk. It's hard not to talk when Fukuzawa is so soft and so pretty and likes him. He isn't going to be able to keep not talking forever. But the longer he does, the more chance Fukuzawa might be too attached to him to send him back when he finds out.
Fukuzawa has work to do that afternoon and carefully moves Ranpo off his lap, and Ranpo might have complained had he not then passed him a toy that really needs to die.
Fukuzawa sits and reviews the details of the bodyguarding escort he'll start tomorrow (and realizes belatedly that his call to the company will be further delayed by it). He's to guard a local official (who has done nothing to hide his shadier agreements with the local gangs, but Fukuzawa can hardly blame him when they run the streets) through a meeting in an old factory building downtown. Ranpo chews on his toy and watches him read over the mission again. He's reviewing the recent surveillance photos of the factory itself when Ranpo snatches one from the table as he sets it aside.
"Ranpo," Fukuzawa sighs in what has already become his designated Exasperated-With-Ranpo tone. Ranpo makes no move to run off with the photo, though Fukuzawa feels the threat looming as Ranpo presses the corner between his lips and flicks his tail, pleased with his catch.
"I'll play with you more when I'm finished," Fukuzawa assures him. He strokes Ranpo's head again and tugs the picture from Ranpo's mouth. Ranpo holds it with his teeth for a second, his intelligent green eyes flicking to Fukuzawa's, before he lets it go.
Fukuzawa scratches behind his ears and Ranpo purrs. He's about to return the photo to the pile when a discoloration in the image catches his attention. He swipes over it with his thumb, but the smudge stays in place. Only it's not a smudge. It's a small yellow light shining where no electronic should be. Tucked into the dark crevasse created by a support beam and a hallway is what appears to be a flash grenade on a remote detonator. Someone has laid a trap.
"Good kitty," he murmurs to Ranpo.
Only the official and the local gang should know about the meeting, but both benefit greatly from their alliance and had little to gain by breaking it. A third party? There were rival gangs in the area. Perhaps one wanted to steal the alliance with the official and planned to do it by framing the other as assassins. Fukuzawa would need to study the building layout and find alternate escape routes and points vulnerable to attack.
He pulls the blueprints from the file and spreads them over the table to study, Ranpo chirruping and hooking his chin over Fukuzawa's shoulder as if interested. Fukuzawa pets him absently while planning their new approach.
That night he lies awake and thinks about how strange it feels to have someone in bed beside him. Ranpo isn't as tiny as he'd expected, but Fukuzawa can't imagine how anyone smaller would have fit against his much larger frame. But then he hadn't intended for the catboy to sleep in his bed. He realizes he could have gone and gotten Ranpo his own bed earlier and decides to go to sleep rather than analyze why it hadn't crossed his mind to do so.
In the morning he goes to the job. He informs his client of the trap but, as he'd expected, Natsume insists on going to the meeting anyway. He does at least call his gang contact and inform them of the flash grenade. The gang makes quick work of it, and they find a few more but luckily nothing deadly. Fukuzawa is still cautious. He takes Natsume on an alternate route to the factory and slips into the building through a side entrance he'd found on the blueprints. They encounter no trouble. The meeting goes almost too well. Fukuzawa frowns at the shadows on the walls, the echoing empty hallways, the high windows in the factory's cavernous main floor while his client does his business. He's on high alert by the time they step outside. Not one threat has been made to the client's life and it sets his teeth on edge.
"I suppose your little catch scared them off," Natsume declares.
"Maybe," Fukuzawa replies, distracted.
"Come on, relax! Prevention is nine tenths of the cure, as they say. You did good work."
"I had some help."
"Oh? From who?"
"Me!"
The voice comes from the roof. Fukuzawa has to squint to see Ranpo through the glare of the reflected sun, perched as he is on top of a row of dormer windows.
Even more startling is the fact that he isn't the only one on the roof.
A man loses his footing at Ranpo's call, slips, slides down the rusty tin, and crashes to the ground at Fukuzawa's feet. A camera clatters after him, pieces flying off where it lands on the hard cement drainage system along the side of the building.
Seeing as the man is firmly unconscious, Fukuzawa turns his gaze back to the roof.
Ranpo is much more graceful in his descent. He hops from the dormer windows to the tin, slides down with his tail flicking for balance, then leaps from the edge of the roof into Fukuzawa's waiting arms.
"What on Earth are you doing here?" He asks, holding Ranpo close.
"Backing you up!" Ranpo chirps. "Government Guy is up for reelection, right? Pictures of a meeting like this would be a huuuuge scandal, he'd get voted out for sure. The flash grenades were this guy's dumb backup plan if he got caught."
Fukuzawa looks at the unconscious man. Then at the camera. Then at his stunned client.
Then he looks back at Ranpo.
"You can talk."
"Government Guy does good stuff, right? You wouldn't protect him if not. The guy running against him wants to crush all the local gangs, but that'll go nowhere and lead to a lot of dead bystanders. So I helped!"
"You-" Fukuzawa sighs. "You should have just warned me so I could take care of it." He frowns. "How did you know?"
"Nobody else would gain anything from messing with a boring meeting like this. And those were police flash grenades. It'd be easier for a gang to use a bomb rather than go through all the trouble of getting their hands on government-issue equipment. But his running opponent was in law enforcement for twenty years."
Fukuzawa stares. "...Huh."
"Are you mad?"
"I didn't know your bodyguard business was a partnership," Natsume interrupts before Fukuzawa can reply. He's unraveled the film into an overexposed spool of useless plastic. Fukuzawa straightens, apology ready. "I'm impressed. That was an inspired play - this man works in my office. Anything I knew he would know."
Fukuzawa glances back at Ranpo.
"What?"
"Did you know?" He asks quietly so Natsume wouldn't hear.
"Yeah? Government Guy put the cameras in. That one stun grenade in the picture was between three better hiding places for anyone on foot, but all the other spots were in full view of the camera. Whoever hid the stun grenades must have known where the cameras were, so they had to work in his office."
"...You are incredible," Fukuzawa murmurs, and Ranpo's eyes go wide but Fukuzawa has already turned to look at the client. "I apologize for the cloak and dagger."
"No no, you've gone above and beyond my expectations. Seems I've some house cleaning to do. I'll have to have someone pick this sap up," he nudges the unconscious man with his boot.
Fukuzawa sees Natsume around the building to his car and stands quietly as he drives away. Ranpo rocks on his heels and fidgets until Fukuzawa says "Let's go home."
Fukuzawa is lost in thought. Ranpo continues to defy his expectations. Could the genetic processing that produces catboys concoct someone like him on occasion? But no, he would have certainly heard about it if there had been several catboys like Ranpo. As a fluke, perhaps. He was simply a remarkable, impossible chance existence.
His thought process is derailed when Ranpo launches himself into his arms. Fukuzawa might have stumbled if he weighed anything.
"It's not a big deal!" Ranpo cries. "I know it's weird that I can talk! But it's not a big deal! I still like it when you pet me and I like to play! I'm still fun! Please don't send me-"
Fukuzawa wraps him in a hug, holding as tight as he dares.
"I'll have to call the company," he says, stroking Ranpo's hair, "to thank them for sending me such a wonderful partner."

thoughts on bungou stray dogs season 5
woo, that was a fun binge-watch! ok, my (not spoiler free) thoughts:
this was a good season, really really good. i'm really impressed by asagiri's ability to keep us guessing and to play off old story patterns while also developing new ones—characterization's very consistent but also keeps developing in fresh and interesting directions. pacing's less wack than s3 (where fyodor appeared in like 3 episodes), the plot develops at a solid pace, the themes are really interesting
this was the gayest season i have seen so far and i've been letting this stupid show queerbait me for 6 years now, so that's saying something. fukichi and fukuzawa simultaneously have the energy of messily divorced exes, pining repressed best friends, and happily married couple all at once. if i was mori i'd be jealous (but it's mori so he's not, though i do appreciate mori/fukuzawa as a foil to fukichi/fukuzawa).
i'm not really the biggest fan of raising the stakes continuously overall, like i really don't think media needs to go like season 1. save my friend season 2. save my home season 3. save the world or some shit, it's fine to have similar magnitude of stakes throughout. but it's cool that asagiri's got the ambition to tackle some lofty questions—in particular i think nikolai's own struggle to determine his free will compared to fukichi's desire to strip free will from humanity in exchange for world peace is interesting.
i have never been particularly taken by fyodor, or fyodor's relationship with dazai, or fyodor's relationship with nikolai. but this season has finally caused me to cave and admit he's great. he's hilarious, he's a great foil to dazai (their weird 4D chess frenemyship is excellent, i understand why people ship them now), his dialogue is top tier and i fucking lost it when he faked having a split personality to the character with split hair because he (rightly) figured sigma would fall for it. like yes DRAG HIM
speaking of split haired characters, i miss Q, who had a lot of potential to add some more chaos to the mix and who i generally want to see more of (his fucked up gender energy and his being a lovehatechild of dazai and chuuya is so entertaining)
i'm...actually a bit disappointed that dazai did not actually let chuuya die, although i do like the direction asagiri took—in "double black," we saw chuuya place his trust in dazai, and it paid off. this time around, dazai placed his trust in chuuya—literally let him put a loaded gun to his head!!—and it paid off (and also chuuya got his revenge for dazai taking too long to nullify corruption last time, you know he had fun with those extra bullets).
i really enjoy that asagiri shows time and time again just how much these two trust each other, but at the same time, i think their relationship could actually be stress tested more—like, i genuinely wanted to see dazai placed into a real "pick chuuya or the ADA" situation! i want to see dazai and chuuya actually on opposite sides, not in truces or working together or whatnot, and i suspect that this will happen in the show's last arc—it's eventually going to circle back to ADA vs. PM, just like the beginning. TL:DR; i'm an insane dazai/chuuya shipper and the chokehold they have on me is so humiliating that i just don't talk about it 99% of the time. if i loved you less i would be able to talk about it more.
although i did 100% call him being OK with killing chuuya as BS, because there is no goddamn way dazai's last words to chuuya would ever be as mild and cliche as "we didn't really get along, but sometimes we understood each other." that man has been practicing dramatic monologues in his head daily for the last seven years. when he does deliver that monologue it's going to fucking SERVE
speaking of being taken in by fyodor: fine fine I GET THE DAZAI/CHUUYA X FYODOR/NIKOLAI PARALLELS NOW OKAY. not that i denied them before but we were really getting bashed over the head with it in the prison break episodes. being queerbaited by this show is better than a lot of actual media gay couples but it still hurts like a bitch.
i continue to want to wring atsushi's neck lol. akutagawa has never really been my fave or anything, but his character development is clearly progressing much faster (and i really really respect it) and our narrator still can't fucking form an opinion without one of his friends to guide him!! kyouka and lucy please ditch him and date each other instead. the lack of kyouka in this season was CRIMINAL.
i kind of ship kenji and tetchou now...i know the show is pushing tetchou and jouno but jouno is just so fucking MEAN and tetchou deserves someone who doesn't judge him for his quirks okay :(
tachihara biggest glow up of any character since the beginning of this show. the character development i didnt know i wanted
this season did a lot more work to humanize the hunting dogs (esp. the non-tachihara ones) and i enjoyed that a lot. teruko's role in the finale, killing the man she loved most because fukuzawa couldn't, absolutely murdered me. i think it's such a good step in her character arc as she has to figure out who she wants to be without him. also i appreciate that she's a badass female character who isn't a weirdly sexualized girlboss and is also a weirdo
aya and bram is truly one of the most bizarre pairs in this show and there are a lot of bizarre pairs, so that's saying something. i legitimately feel like asagiri picked some names out of a hat or spun a wheel for this or something. but i am excited for bram to figure out what he wants after spending forever being enslaved to others, and hope that this involves listening to the radio all day with a 10-year-old girl. the way children are portrayed in BSD as these incredibly vulnerable and impressionable people worthy of love and protection sincerely fucks me up so bad
loose ends: where is the help me note from? i assumed dazai wrote it, but i doubt it, and i also doubt he just left sigma to die. we still don't know what fyodor's ability is, which makes me nervous, since he is ALLEGEDLY dead. i wonder if it's nikolai's (frankly he does legitimately seem like the type to have split personality issues). i'm worried the antidote isn't an actual antidote, and we obviously haven't seen the end of nikolai. there's an actually comical amount of power in bram's hands now. mori's been fairly quiet this season, and there's no way he didn't plan a way for himself to benefit from the carnage. that man is a vulture, he exploits starving orphans off the street! and he sent in chuuya to save the ADA's ass twice and let akutagawa disappear for 2+ weeks! this man was just negotiating to have yosano join the mafia, you can't tell me he didn't get something for himself out of this.
honestly i kind of just want this shit with the hunting dogs and the decay of angels to end and to stop worrying about world domination so we can go back to the ADA battling yokohama's villain of the week, like man the tension has just been building nonstop. give the ADA a coffee break. 😭😭
ranpo fans are truly getting their time lately huh. we are winninggggg

Aaaaargh! Goddammit I love this anime so much! Bungou Stray Dogs is a great anime and makes me upset by being fantastic >:[
Anyway. I was rewatching the start of season 2 because it's great and it had been a while, and now I basically have to go back through the whole-ass anime looking for something because something sounded familiar. Spoilers under the Read More
SŌSEKI GODDAMN NATSUME
He wrote a book :)
But I am not good with names, and had taken a break after the first time I watched Mimic's arc, so I did not recognize him when he was introduced with the name, so I didn't connect the book to the cat, nor did I recognize that the cat showed up way back then.
But the name stuck around just barely enough that when I rewatched it, it seemed familiar enough and safe enough for me to look him up on the wiki. He appears seven times, according to it, but I was unable to find the mention of him in episode 12, and it's missing the fact that he's in the bar each time they meet up, not just when Oda thinks about him in human form. Oh and it's not even revealed that he is the cat until the end of Cannibalism!
Damn you, I am a cat....
And he also apparently was a mentor for both Fukuzawa and Mori, in addition to being the guy who got kidnapped during the play?
Given that he says sweet fuckall, and shows up about as often as Kenji speaks, you have to know him pretty dang well to realize that he is the same person, or even there at all, meaning I have to go back and actively look for him, if I want to learn about him or see him without just. reading the wiki.
And I suppose that's how a man working in witness protection and learning secrets should be, huh. It's a beautiful anime :)

Hi! How are you doing? Girlll, I love your work :3 congrats, you're a real star cuz' you light up my tumblr Haha. If requests still open, what about some ADA boys (surprise me hihi) reacting to a little sister dating?
ahh i love this! of course, of course! there’s no specific gender i implied for whoever their sister is dating so yeah :D
sorry for the long wait! bc of that, i wrote smth extra, but that won’t be published until a while later (it’s so fun to write i love it sm)
the ada boys when they find out their little sister is in a relationship
platonic! ada boys x little sister! reader
characters: dazai osamu, edogawa ranpo, kunikida doppo, miyazawa kenji, nakajima atsushi, tanizaki junichiro
for your age, it honestly depends on the character, so yeah
Tumblr media
dazai osamu
he had his suspicions but wasn’t rlly able to investigate bc kunikida was watching him like a hawk
his abandoned stacks of paperwork was getting too high
kunikida promised whoever could find dazai the most would get treated
ranpo ratted him out every single goddamn time
but for his overall reaction, tbh, i think it might depend on how old you are
if you’re like 15-17 it’ll be obvious that he’s overprotective, but he knows he can’t really do anything to stop you
he acknowledges the fact that you’re growing up as a beautiful lady and want independence
but it doesn’t mean it won’t whine
“WHA-WHA Y-YOU’RE DATING?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR BIG BROTHER?!”
if you’re 18-21, i feel like he’d have a little bit more control (is that the right word for this?) and mind his own business
bc obviously, you’re an adult now, and all the actions you take are your responsibility now
but like i said earlier, it doesn’t mean he won’t whine
“do you have to be dating now?? you can always start when you’re 50″
but regardless of who you’re dating, he will unravel everything abt them to make sure you’re going to be safe and well taken care of
the two of you have gone through hell and back before coming to the ada
he will make sure you have your happy ending
if it means dating chuuya or akutagawa then so be it
he’ll gag and be the biggest shit about it but he’ll suck it up
eventually
edogawa ranpo
he already knew
there’s no way he didn’t know already
doesn’t mean he likes it though
he whines to fukuzawa abt it
yosano occasionally too
he won’t meddle in your relationship, but like dazai, he will also unearth every little thing abt whoever you’re dating
i feel like he’s a “i don’t like this, but i trust you, but i don’t trust them” type of person
he’d be more relaxed if you were dating someone he already knew/trusts
basically anyone in the ada + poe !!
but despite that, he won’t stick his nose into your business but will do so if needed
he’ll complain that you don’t pay attention to him as much anymore but he knows that there’s not much he can rlly do abt it
well, there are probably some things he can do, but since finding out abt this whole “dating” thing, fukuzawa and yosano have been keeping a close eye on him
so he settles for being whiney instead
“(y/nnnn) you’re not paying attention to me anymoree >:( “
“nii-san im literally making you a cake rn”
way deep down tho, he’s happy that there’s someone who can take care of you
“but they have to face me first got that (y/n)-chan?!”
just so you know, the person will fail ranpo’s test bc it’ll probably be smth ridiculous like “solve this mystery before me!” knowing that he will win
he’s a little shit like that
but still, he’s the greatest detective so ig he gets a pass
kunikida doppo
break it to him gently bc please you’re going to give him aneurysm
he knew deep down that at some point you were going to start dating but he definitely wasn’t prepared
he probably had a copy of his dating plan for you
yk the one episode where he says smth like “in 4 years i’ll find someone to date and in 6 we’ll marry” or whatever??
yeah that
he also has a page in his notebook for your ideal partner by his ideal standards
you found out bc dazai told you and well, it wasn’t pretty
dazai had a field day watching you scold him for it
kunikida was kneeling and looking at the ground and everything
he never looked more like a little kid than in that moment
dazai still has pictures that kunikida still hasn’t been able to get rid of
bold of him to assume that dazai already didn’t make a ridiculous amount of photocopies and backups
it pisses him off slightly bc you choose to ignore his ideals him but like i said for the last two boys, he knows he can’t really do anything abt it
as much as he doesn’t like it, at the end of the day, it’s your relationship and not his
nothing is going to benefit him by being a helicopter parent/sibling
and from what he’s heard, whoever your partner is, they’re making you happy and taking care of you so he can’t really complain
he keeps a close eye on you when he can tho
when you have a date, he makes katai keep him updated by using the signal in your phone to track you
so at the very least, he knows where you are even if he doesn’t know what you’re doing
yk what-
forget what i said abt him not being a helicopter paretn/sibling bc it doesn’t benefit him
your safety and well being is his #1 priority
miyazawa kenji
i made up a special scenario just for kenji and i think it’s rlly cute
kenji is still 14 and let’s say ur like 5ish
okok imagine yall are back home at ihatov and you guys are just in the village doing cute sibling things
kenji is helping one of the “onee-sans” in the village and ur nearby playing w/ one of ur friends
and then it happened
“nii-chan! nii-chan!! me and *insert name* are getting married!”
“oh that’s nice! when’s the wedding?”
he’ll indulge in your “game” bc he sees how genuinely excited you are and bc he sees that you’re literally radiating beams of light and sparkles
ig it runs in the family
at first he’s all happy, excited and supportive and whatnot but then at some point he’d be like
huh.
is this too young??
he wouldn’t be upset per say bc it rlly isn’t in his personality but i think he’d be a little confused bc “wow i feel like we’ve missed a lot of steps”
but nonetheless
he’d be very supportive and will probably be your flower girl, ring bearer, pastor, everything; basically anything you ask
nakajima atsushi
supportive #1 brother fight me
he won’t be mad that you’re dating, but instead elated that you found someone that can make you so happy
happy in a way he could never
but he’s shocked and lowkey hurt you didn’t say anything to him at first but understands it ig..??
bc he knows you need space and all that but like “(y/n) why didn’t you say anything T^T “
he still loves you tho
but he’s also still worried abt you
he trusts you to make good decisions and that you’ll take care of yourself but he can’t help it
it’s the big brother instincts yk?
he’s also kinda sad bc, it’s a sign that you rlly are growing up and probably won’t need him anymore (which is complete nonsense)
he wants you to at least tell him a little bit abt them or even meet them briefly
he wants to have some sort of analysis of what they’re like so that he can stop worrying, even if it’s just a little bit
when atsushi does meet them, he’s not gonna be like those scary intimidating older brothers but he’ll act like how he usually does
bc if they’re sticking around, they’ll have to like him or at the very least, tolerate him
he’s kinda insecure that they won’t like him ://
he wants them to tho! they’re a important part of your life so he wants to have a good impressions
jeez it’s like he’s the bf and not the other way around (ಠ_ಠ)
like ranpo, he probably wouldn’t stick his nose into your business unless necessary but dazai would somehow rope him into stalking watching your dates at a distance
absolutely horrible at being discreet
partly dazai’s fault tho
he always ends up giving atsushi a heart attack bc he’d get way too close to where you were
one time bc he panicked, the only solution he could come up with to hide is by tackling him into a rose bush
when you walk into the ada the next day and see dazai’s face covered in cutesy band aids (kudos to kyouka & kenji) and ask him what the heck happened to him, he answered “stray cat”
atsushi let him get beat by kunikida a little longer than usual that day
tanizaki junichiro
PLEASE YOU DIDN’T EVEN TELL HIM
idk why you would tho (ಠ_ಠ)
if you did s/o might go bye bye
im kidding
for the most part
he may not have known at first, but naomi definitely knew
you had to bribe her with weekly sweets to keep the secret
junichiro definitely caught onto the fact that the youngest of their trio was treating the older two quite often but didn’t think too much of it
naomi can be so mean tho T^T
gets you to do nearly everything if she so much smirks your way
you just know her all too well
he found out bc he came home early from a mission once and found yall making out in the kitchen
he was ready to cut a bitch
nearly did
but you and naomi (who got home in the middle of the chaos) were able to stop him
obviously he was rlly upset abt everything but i headcanon that after being like upset/angry he’d be kinda mopey
kinda like tamaki from ohshc if you know what i mean
he might even spill some crocodile tears
if he’s feeling that bad then he might even go emo mode and sulk in his seat or in a corner
after he gets over it, like kunikida, he’s watchful over you
drags atsushi with him to stalk all of your dates
im not even going to cross it out, it is what it is; stalking
atsushi is always exhausted after these sorts of things so tanizaki buys him chazuke as a “im sorry for dragging you along but you already know that you’re coming with me next time” treat
also one of the ones who tries to unearth every little thing and is the “i don’t like this, but i trust you, but i don’t trust them” type
remember how i said in atsushi’s thing that he won’t go into scary intimidating older brother mode? junichiro is the exact opposite
he does it both discreetly and indiscreetly
yk, being intimidating when you aren’t looking or he’s smiling but yall know there’s a hidden meaning in it
but like atsushi, he wants to meet them to have a...little chat
ITS SO QUIET
it’s even more terrifying bc a) scary big brother b) said big brother is an operative of the armed detective agency and c) being said operative means he knows how to kill you and have no problem hiding your body
please if i was the one there i might piss my pants
it takes him a while to adjust to this...new circumstance but if you’re happy then he can’t rlly complain
you’re happiness and safety (along with naomi’s) is his top priority so if this person is giving you that happiness and willing to doing anything protect you then he doesn’t rlly have any other choice but to accept it
eventually, whoever you’re dating might grow on him but that’ll take some time
naomi is like your brother bc she can be a bit overprotective (not as extreme tho) but she she still likes your s/o
she likes that whole “watching young love blossom” cliche sort of thing if you know what i mean
but she will cut them if they hurt you
conclusion
overall, the boys, as expected all have their own reactions to their precious younger sister having their own relationship, but in the end, as long as you’re happy, safe, and protected, they will be supportive and trust your decisions.
BUT
they are all the “hurt her, i hurt you” type so just warn your s/o ahead of time ☺️☺️

ok my bsd predictions for major plot points in the future
1.
If dazai were to be killed off in bsd, chuuya would probably be killed with him in a final act of coded symbiosis.
Tbh tho that's such a major thing that it probably wouldn't happen until when the manga is finishing up so
2.
Chuuya will either become the PM Boss or he'll join the ADA.
So chuuya is strongly suggested in two ways for his future which is HM INTERESTING. So the way that Mori clearly recruits him not just for his ability but for his leadership skills, plus the how chuuya has been developing those skills, is something I was thinking about a lot in S3. Mori is very clearly not happy with Dazai being the heir, even though he was the best choice. Dazai would have probably killed Mori and taken his place by the time he was 20 if odasaku hadn't died. Chuuya has loyalty to the mafia plus the fighting and leadership abilities. He's also got a certain obedience and controllability that if Mori was to step aside and not die he would like. Also something ppl forget is that chuuya is actually good at negotiation and staying calm under pressure, it's suggested that dazai particularly triggers his anger because dazai is an annoying shit who seems to be in canon attached to him whenever they're in the same room.
HOWEVER. Now I don't think I've ever said this on this blog despite me constantly thinking about it but Fukuzawa's ability is the perfect thing for Chuuya, as it has the possibility of actually reigning in corruption. If chuuya joined the ADA he would actually be able to use corruption's ability of throwing black holes without losing control of himself. Arguably that would also get rid of the need for dazai's intervention although it's been established that skk were thought of as a perfect fighting duo for a year before corruption even first manifested in a fight, so I don't think this would kill skk. And chuuya joining the ADA would mean that he and dazai have to interact on the daily. It also means that the mafia is left without any clear heir. People have vouched for kouyou in this situation but I think it's clear that kouyou is being forced to be in the mafia, she's given up on leaving and doesn't want to be there actively.
I don't think the second outcome is very possible plotwise for a few reasons. These are all totally writer's arguments so appeals to logic and plot aren't exactly going to work here, but as a writer myself these are the planning issues that stick out extremely badly if we get chuuya to defect:
- it would have to take something extremely major to get chuuya to leave the loyalty of the mafia
- chuuya becomes even more OP. asagiri kafka has said that though he really likes chuuya (as evidenced by the amount of goddamn times chuuya comes up in the novels), he avoids putting him in the manga because chuuya is extremely overpowered. If he and dazai were logically paired together for each issue every arc would be solved far too quickly for things like character development, or like...story...to take place. This is why chuuya is constantly sidelined. You have to actively make it so that chuuya isn't on people's minds constantly, or get him out of the picture immediately, so that your narrative can actually develop. Chuuya is honestly a mistake in a writing sense. But he's a strong character and he and dazai were written in tandem to each other so he's absolutely unremovable. A character like chuuya NEEDS to exist. So the way chuuya has been toned down is Corruption. Chuuya's ability by itself is just...incredibly powerful. He's virtually indestructible. However Corruption, the ultimate form, is shown to actively kill chuuya. The only times we've seen corruption used is cthulu, shibusawa, and shibusawa big dragon, all extreme threats. So chuuya's life when he's pulled out as the deus ex machina is tied to dazai. This makes chuuya's unchecked OP a little less unchecked and a little less OP. Chuuya is actually a fantastic example of why you CAN have OP characters, you just have to write them a certain way.
However in writing them a certain way, the most stupid thing you could do for your narratives would be to bring corruption under control, and to bring chuuya into the group of protagonists. you have to find excuses in every problem to why chuuya can't just come out and handle this himself, like you were before but now dazai's absence isn't an issue PLUS your readers are paying more attention to chuuya because he's around all the time.
So yeah, chuuya being in the ADA would be a bad choice narrative wise unless it was for like...one arc or smth. Chuuya becoming the next boss of the port mafia is wayyyyy more likely to me. I don't think chuuya would like it but he's really the most obvious choice
3.
Dostoyevsky/rat arc is going to be mega arc/s.
one of the exciting things abt this series is that I have no idea how long this conflict with the rats will go on for. At first I thought it would be an occasional and ongoing plotline that is explored not as one big set arc but interspersed with other non-rat arcs. However by the way it's going it looks like we have two options, either 1) the rat issue is being dealt with across one mega-arc or 2) rat issues will still be dealt with like I thought, interspersed, but each time they pop up it will be a mega-arc like it has been so far. I genuinely don't know how this will be resolved, and I'm actually kind of wondering if the characters will finally leave kanagawa prefecture and maybe head to Russia to defeat the rats. I think this could be a good start to travelling the characters to settings outside yokohama.
4.
Agatha Christie is going to be matched up to Ranpo.
Like Dostoyevsky is dazai's foil because their works IRL were similar in tone, Agatha Christie and Ranpo match up in that way perfectly. We've already met the trick foil (we thought he would be, but he wasn't) for Ranpo in Poe (IRL Poe actually did write mystery at times, and his works do contain elements of suspense and unknown). Ranpo is clearly going through hell in this arc which makes me feel like he's going to start being a much more major character in the future.
Agatha Christie and Edogawa Ranpo's works both fit in the mystery genre and were both alive irl around the same time. They both played historic roles in developing the mystery genre of their language's literature and are pretty well-known in non-literature circles because mystery often has a pulp, mass-consumable aspect to it. It was actually surprising to me that they were made into characters considering the other characters are named after authors of much "higher grade" Literature, as in Literature capital L. Mystery authors especially like Agatha Christie don't fit that bill, but they've played a central role in developing the fiction industry so I don't find it odd. Plus there's a bit of a debate what counts as Literature and every person has different opinions. Mine differs to asagiri kafka's which evidently seems to be that if the author has had a significant impact on the literary field then their works become Literature, thus they become 文豪 (Literary masters), thus they become a bsd character. I think that's fair, even if it isn't what I would personally say Literature is. This is par for the course tho lol, p sure any person who is into Literature will have a different thing to say about what gets that capital L.
But yeah, I think Ranpo and Christie are clearly going to be each others foils.
5.
Christie is going to be cold. Like. COLD.
Dostoyevsky is more obvious evil, it shows on the surface. But Christie will have a polite veneer, a charm to her. We've seen her in a shot, and she sits tall, she enjoys tea, she dresses expensively and lives in colourful rooms. But she had no hesitation to destroy Yokohama if a situation wasn't dealt with within half an hour in the cruelest way possible. Christie was actively ready to incinerate Yokohama alive, that was her first instinct when contacted for help. Christie very clearly has a lack of care for the lives of others, OR she wants to destroy Yokohama in particular. However considering this is the goal of Dostoyevsky and Christie will probably be the next major villain after Dostoyevsky, repeating that goal and motivation is pretty boring and not very bungou stray dogs.
6.
The order of the clock tower will not come to yokohama first.
The Guild were the ones to come to yokohama and threaten it up close. The order of the clock tower was a major threat to yokohama from across the continent. That's terrifying. The ADA/Mafia will have to work proactively
7.
The end of the clock tower will have major repercussions.
The order of the clock tower seems to have its claws in everything and has a tight maintenance of leadership and control over almost every gifted organisation we've met. The Order seems to literally keep order. But they've clearly got a goal with sending the guild and the rats after the book. If the order is destroyed then certain aspects of gifted society slip loose and create new problems. This will probably be the creator of an arc or two after the order arc is over.
8.
Chuuya's backstory is linked to Dazai's.
Chuuya was used by the military and experimented on until he could contain a god of destruction, after which he went haywire, blasted a huge crater in yokohama, and became a feral child.
Dazai was...we don't know. The furthest back we can tell is that some time in his early teens he was taken in by Mori. Before that he was apparently wandering around trying to find some kind of emotion, something to make him feel. He eventually found that with the violence and adrenaline rush of the mafia.
Now I don't think that dazai is a psychopath. It's easy to say he is with the way he seems to talk about the hole in his heart and the absence and emptiness. However dazai very very clearly cares. He cares about odasaku, he cares about atsushi, he cares about the ADA, and he even cares about chuuya (this is not my shipper brain talking, I am literally talking about canon). Dazai very clearly CARES. He isn't a psychopath.
My belief is that dazai is the most clear argument for my case that the series is about mental illness and self worth. Dazai very clearly has a major depressive disorder.
I also think that dazai is extremely traumatised. Obviously he's traumatised by being in the mafia at 15 and by odasaku's death, but I also think dazai may have been traumatised even before then.
Atsushi is dazai's mentee, the half of shin soukoku. He's shown to have childhood trauma. Akutagawa also has childhood trauma. Chuuya has childhood trauma. This may be a coincidence but almost every main character in this series has some form of early trauma.
Dazai IRL was not called Dazai Osamu. Dazai Osamu is actually a very sad name but Dazai's birth name is Tsushima Shuuji. IRL dazai/Tsushima was the son of a rich family that lived in Aomori prefecture (which is very rural lol). Dazai had an absent father and a sick mother and wasnt raised by his parents but rather by servants and his aunt. His father died when he was young (not that he got very old) and his life was plagued by constantly running off with girls, getting his allowance cut for being a marxist, and, yes, suicide attempts.
So my ideas for how this may translate into bsd dazai is this:
- dazai ran away from home when he was young
- dazai never had a good parental figure
- dazai is from a rich family in a rural area very far away. Like for those who don't know Aomori is at the northern tip of Honshū, just below Hokkaido. Yokohama is just south of Tokyo. The region in between is mostly forest and smaller cities. Most of Japan's (major) cities are cloistered around Tokyo and Kyoto and Fukuoka which are towards the south. So dazai is a country boy who has wandered japan after running away from home.
- dazai's real name is Tsushima Shuuji and there's a personal reason he's distanced himself from that. This one im not sure about but yeah
- thus follows that why would dazai be so fucked up if he isn't a psychopath and he did come from a rich family? Dazai to me reads that something major happened. In shin skk it's clear that atsushi and alutagawa share a past of abuse at the hands of parental figures and loneliness. With all the similarities and parallels drawn between the characters in skk and shin skk it seems logical to me that chuuya's past of torture may be similar to Dazai's in a way. It would be disappointing to me if dazai's past was covered and it didn't in some way affect him. The clearest parallel between skk is that they both lacked parental figures most if not their entire lives.
There's also this comment that dazai makes when the head of atsushi's orphanage dies. It's that relationships with fathers are messy and even if they were terrible it's natural to cry. This seems like bsd dazai may share irl dazai's father's death early in his life. It's hinted therefore that dazai's father was either abusive or neglectful and died when dazai was younger.
Anyway this went longer than I thought it would but I invest far too much brain time into bsd so it's gotta seep out at some point lol

Day 5: Gunpoint
Back at @whumptober2019 again on day 5!
When left on his own, Ranpo tended to get into trouble. He hadn't been left to investigate cases on his own since Fukuzawa had taken him in, which helped ward that off, but for the first time in a year, he had a case and nobody could accompany him.
So against his better judgement, he went alone instead of waiting. It wasn't hard to get there, and it only took a short amount of time before he figured out where the killer was.
They had shot the victim twice, once in the leg and the other in the head. One to slow, the other to kill.
Ranpo smiled as he went to the hide-out, telling police ahead of time where he would be and if they hadn't heard from him within the hour, to storm the place.
Of course things didn't go as planned. They never did in situations like these. He confronted the killer but was unarmed, so it wasn't a surprise when a gun was held to his face.
He had had many guns shoved in his face. Handguns, shotguns, submachine guns. You name it, chances are it has been shoved in his face at some point.
That didn't make it any less terrifying, he thought as he flinched, and his eyes widened in fear. The barrel was pressed to his forehead, and he backed up as she walked forward, until he was pressing against a wall.
"On your knees, hands where I can see them," she said, but he couldn't do anything. His knees shook, and he whimpered, lowering his head. She growled and kicked a knee, knocking him down. "If you don't listen to me, I'll empty this clip into your goddamn skull."
Ranpo forced himself to move, resting his hands on his head and keeping his eyes down until the cold metal pressed to his jaw, and tilted his head up.
As he stared into her cold eyes, his entire body began to shake with terror, and he realized that there was no Shachou to rescue him. Nor was there any light at the end of the tunnel, so it seemed. He was going to die alone, at the end of a gun. Just like his parents.
He supposed he brought this upon himself. Going alone, not calling for help from somebody else. Being entirely reckless and disregarding his own safety. He was stupid, and now he might die for it.
He was ready. Maybe it was his time to go.
Only one tear fell before he leaned against the gun and looked up at her, his expression horrendously sad. "Just do it."
She smirked, and the click of the safety was loud in the quiet warehouse. The trigger began to creak as she pulled it slowly, and then she was launched sideways, glowing red. Chuuya stood in her place, and he held the gun in his hand before tossing it to the side.
The second the gun was out of his face, Ranpo broke down, and he covered his face, sagging where he sat. Chuuya was quick to lift him up, though, and he ran a hand through the other's dark hair. "You're okay now… I'm here. You're okay."
