How to Run a Kickstarter pt 7
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
Yesterday I covered running the project itself. Now we look at what happens after.
THE PROJECT’S AFTERLIFE
The Money: First, you won’t get the money until about 2 weeks pass after it ends. During this time, you can still set up the manufacturing and what not, or get to work with an artist, but know you won’t have the money for a bit. If you can fund the manufacturing or art yourself until the money comes in to replenish what you spend, that works best.
People Want to Know Where It Is: So you set a goal for your items, and now you’re in the interim. You could just ignore people and release it when it’s done, but that’s not fun for people. Post updates with new art, new prototypes, early looks at the item you are making. Show off your hard work, and what their money went to make. They want to see it, trust me.
Keep a Spreadsheet: You can do a backer export on Kickstarter to get the info they have on a spreadsheet, but I’d suggest editing it some or making your own and moving their data into yours. You want to clearly keep track of people’s names, addresses, what items they got, and whether or not you shipped to them yet. I did this by highlighting their row in the spreadsheet with green.
Some People’s Payments Won’t Work: This is inevitable, and always happens. Keep an eye on it, sometimes they fix it and you get the money, other times they don’t and you can cross them off.
Spotlight Page: After your project is over and the money is in your account, your project page becomes a spotlight page. You can no longer edit it, but you can update the “Pledge Now” button into something else, and you can edit a little blurb above that button. Use this. Direct the link to your website, your public social media account, or to a store front where you are selling more of the item.
Fulfilling Your Project: If you’re using a third party to manage and fulfill everything-- you’re basically done. If not, and you’re planning to make it all yourself or have everything come to your house/apartment to ship out, be mindful of how much time it takes.
Use any service you can to make it easier. I bought a label printer and sticker shipping labels from stamps.com, and use them to make my postage. I also use ULINE for all my shipping box needs. ULINE has some super sketchy business practices though, and I’d suggest finding an alternative if you can. Be sure to research cheapest shipping options for packaging, tape, and the postage itself. Whatever you do, if you are doing over 100 packages, do NOT plan to just write out all the addresses yourself. A label printer isn’t that expensive if you have campaign funds to use, and it can be used for all your future projects that you fulfil on your end.
The Latent Supporter Base: Well after you’ve fulfilled your items, you will have people who have backed your past project. Some of them will follow you, and be notified when you launch a new project. Awesome! Not all of them will, which is also fine. However, you can always come back later to post a new update, which will email all of your old supporters, to let them know about your new project.
Never forget they all reached out and supported you once before, and many will likely do it again if they liked what you made. So strive to make cool shit, and you will slowly and organically grow a following.
That’s it for my How to Run a Kickstarter series.
Any questions? I’ll do a follow up post if I get enough! : )

Etsy Shop Overhaul & Moving Away From Mercari
With the holidays approaching and Mercari changing their fees and shipping cost for prepaid labels, I knew I had to take time and focus on my Etsy shop otherwise I’ll be in a financial fiasco again, which lead to problems this month.
Mercari started charging processing fees on listings in October, which is in addition to their 10% cut that comes right off the top, shipping, and taxes. Though they tout it as being insignificant, the payment processing fee hurts smaller scale sellers who rely on individual sales versus bundles or high dollar items, where the payment processing fee for a bundle I recently sold at $32 came out to be $1.72 - (I paid) $4.79 shipping (I paid)-$3.20 (Mercari’s cut)= $22 (rounded)
So a bundle that would have 2 items I was willing to discount for the covenience of bundling and pay shipping for the customer cost me $10 for two $18 items I ended up charging $16 for. Which is pretty lame considering with Mercari, the seller only gets paid after the buyer has received the item and rated the transaction, releasing the funds.
I invested in Pitney Bowes for Mercari sales as it is $4.99 a month and is the same shipping label service that works with Etsy and Ebay to offer discounted commercial shipping options. I still have to pay postage, but most labels are still $.50 or so cheaper than the prepaid labels Mercari offers.
But with the new payment processing fee added into the mix, I can barely still break even on orders $20+ as I’m only getting $13 in my pocket and buyers don’t want to pay the full price, which is the draw of Mercari- you can make offers. Now your offer of $12 only gets me $8 for an item that cost more than that in labor and materials.
-In response to this I have totally revamped my Etsy pricing to reflect what I expect to receive for an item and opened up the option for personalized and customized orders in every item for buyers to possibly request a less expensive version of something they love. I went through each listing and changed shipping to be calculated for each item so international customers can benefit from lower rates and free shipping on orders $35.00 USD + while customers within the US will still receive free domestic shipping via USPS First Class, with the option for choosing to pay for expedited shipping if you wish.
-Holiday sale will begin on the 10th of this month (November) and end December 31st with ALL items discounted in the shop! Promo code CRYSTALBLR will still be active to receive an extra $5 off your order (even custom orders!) so I definitely urge you to take advantage of these discounts if you have seen anything in my shop you desire :)
What Is Next With Mercari?
Starting January 1st, 2021 I will be only listing items on Mercari that are either abandoned custom orders or second hand materials, clothing, etc from my personal home that would otherwise not be ‘appropriate’ for the Etsy shop. Free shipping will still be offered on bundles and select items at my discretion and I will still work with my Mercari buyers to give them the best deal. I appreciate all of your support if you purchased anything from my Mercari listings in the last two years, bringing my shop up to over 100 5 star reviews which is fantastic considering I really got into selling my creations in general just last year. I apologize for causing all my Mercari followers and supporters any inconvenience or heart ache when it comes to this switch of focus but in order for me to grow as an artist and grow my business I have to be able to make a profit AND afford to pay my expenses at the end of the day, which unfortunately isn’t happening selling on Mercari anymore. :( If you purchase anything from Mercari through December you will receive a special Etsy discount code with your order to show you how much I appreciate you and hope you choose to continue to follow me and support me during these tough times as you had before.
What’s Next?
Holiday sales will take place in my Etsy shop starting November 10th and ending December 31st (I may extend the date depending on how successful these sales are!) ALL of my listings will be discounted INCLUDING customized and personalized creations for those of you wanting to purchase something extra special for someone extra extra special this holiday season. Please place your orders ASAP as I am the only designer and manufacturer behind these creations. While most of my orders go out within 1-3 business days of processing, you may experience delays and sell outs depending on the popularity of certain items. You may still use the CRYSTALBLR promo code to save $5 off your order, as I mentioned before.
•New crystal essentials sets will be coming along with Talisman bracelets & necklaces as well as more unique one of a kind decor and other items! To those of you new to my creations, I like to mix the spiritual with the scientific, taking advantage of special effects pigments and designs to create amazing color changing, sunlight reactive, photoluminescent jewelry, accessories, and more combined with natural, authentic gemstones, crystals, and other Earthen items!
New Etsy pricing will also be even cheaper during this sale so there is no better time than now to give something you think is cool a try :) I offer a 100 percent customer satisfaction guarantee as I have earned those 100+ 5 star reviews on Mercari. Also, starting yesterday, all orders will receive a special handmade gift with no minimum purchase!
Thank you again for all your support regardless of platform. I love you all!

Five tips to enhance your whisky auction strategy
Here’s some thoughts on whisky auction strategy as it is not always as easy as it looks, and you should keep your wits about you, especially when buying.
“WHAT? You’re selling your precious bottles in a whisky auction? Scandalous!”
That appears to be what the militant whisky drinkers and ‘buy to openers’ are saying at the minute, but why? There is no shame in selling whisky at auction; I’ve done it, most of the people I know in in the whisky industry has or intends to too.
Moving on, here are my top five tips to enhance your whisky auction strategy.
1. Timing is everything; both when selling, and for buying
So you’ve just bought the latest limited edition Ardbeg Committee Release, or this year's Feis Ile Lagavulin, or indeed that super-limited edition Highland Park UK exclusive and the assumed promise of greatness and paying off your mortgage by selling, also known as flipping, this or these bottles is playing on your mind no end.
But do you sell now? Or wait for the market to settle?
Typically first mover advantage means you can see significant gains really quickly if you can be the first to get these bottles to auction, with 2017’s Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Winter Storm, retailing at ~£200 sell for ~£600 in the first auction, although it did then calm down. Same went for Kininvie a few years ago and near-enough every Ardbeg release going.
Beware though, some of these bottles get flooded onto the market really quickly after launch and by doing that you end up seeing the ‘value’, or ‘what someone is prepared to pay for it’ go down as each bottle has a series of competitors it is going up against.
This is the same reason for why I would always advocate putting only one of each bottle in to auction at a time; the more of the same bottle you put in, the more they are competing against each other and the more likelihood there is of them returning less than they should fetch due to only a limited amount of buyers being in the market for each bottle, reducing the possibility of a bidding war.
Same goes for buying; time it right for when you think there will be significant availability and do your research on what bottles have sold for historically so you don’t go in blind and lob in a massive bid when it is not necessary.
2. Make sure you’re using the right site for what you’re selling
There are so many whisky auction websites out there now, some are broad in their remit and others are more specialised, and some are still quite new so unexpected bargains can be found from time to time.
Here are a few of my favourites and what they are useful for:
Catawiki
A broad brushstroke of auctions to choose from including many non-whisky items to help build any of your collections. Auctions go live weekly and there are often some pretty cool bottles available.
Scotch Whisky Auctions
The first auction site I remember visiting and still one of the best with such a phenomenal array of bottles available every month. I have bought about thirty percent of my whisky collection through this site. Highly recommended.
Whisky Auctioneer
A superb site with lots of rare Whiskies and impeccable service from Ian who runs the business, well worth looking into as they get most of the limited editions and are slightly smaller than Scotch Whisky Auctions so you have more of a chance of a bargain from time to time.
Just Whisky
A great site and one I have sold a few bottles through over the years - great pickup service and a lovely selection of bottles old and new.
Whisky.Auction
Owned by The Whisky Exchange, this online whisky auction is a good option for some high value bottles as well as smaller niche ranges. Seem to list a lot of miniatures too, if that’s your thing.
3. Watch those commissions
Always bear in mind that you have to pay one way or another for buying and selling at auction. Online auctions normally come with incentives if you time it right such as:
Free bottle pickup as the auction house does a UK-wide drive around collecting bottles for people
No insertion fees for sellers
Reduced buyers’ fees
Free reserves on sellers’ lots
Free storage for up to six months
These don’t happen often, and certainly are not the norm, so look around the sites above and see when they are doing the, as you can save a wedge... especially if you’re not selling Port Ellen or Karuizawa by the case load where, in fairness, a few quid off your return won’t hurt too much.
Note too that offline auctions are usually more expensive with fees on both sides ranging fro, 12% to 24%, so factor that in to your purchasing and bidding to avoid frustration later.
4. Look into delivery options and prices pre-bidding
So... a few weeks ago I bought thirty bottles of 1970s single malts and blended Whiskies at auction accidentally, essentially I thought I’d bought five bottles by winning five lots but turns out they were multi-bottle auctions which meant I rather unexpectedly got an absolute bargain.
Until the packing and postage quote came in.
To pack, collect and transport those thirty bottles it cost me £140. Ouch. Just make sure you read the T’s&C’s. I still got a bargain in reality, just not as much as it first appeared!
5. Enjoy it!
This is all meant to be fun, so enjoy it, male a few quid, buy a few bottles you’d otherwise not get a chance to and let me know any bargains you’ve picked up below.
One last watchout; try to set a limit and stick to it, odds are the bottle is on another auction site the same month or will be in a few months so don’t bankrupt yourself in your pursuit of that last Cask Strength Laphroaig 10 Year Old, someone else still owns it and does want it anymore... pounce when the time is right for you.

Tax
First of all forgive me because this is unlike anything i’ve written before and I am unsure of how to do it... also please note that a lot of this was learned as I went and may not necessarily be the most CORRECT, EFFICIENT or RELEVANT information for you. Just take it as a guide to help you work out what is best for you.
Do I need an ABN? Yes, you should get one of these early on. It’s super easy to do online and your accountant will ask you for it later. It’s used for PAYG (Pay as you go) taxes. My ABN is listed under Entertainer (Musician) because oddly, this was the most relevant category for me. This was in 2015 so maybe it’s changed now but I’m still happy to be classified as this.
How much do I need to save for taxes? The following table is from https://www.ato.gov.au/Rates/Individual-income-tax-rates/
I think MOST camgirls will fall under the first 2 brackets so 20% of your income should suffice. Am I being presumptious? I think a good benchmark is top 500. If you’re consistently ranking in the top 500 then you should save 30%. If you aren’t ranking this high stick with 20%.
Do I need to pay GST?
No. First of all if you earn less than $75,000 a year you definitely DO NOT have to pay GST. Secondly, GST is about goods and services in australia bought by australians. You are paid by an AMERICAN company and therefore do not need to pay taxes on OVERSEAS ONLINE INCOME. Even if all or some of your ‘customers’ are australian, there is ZERO way to show this or measure this.
I showed the following image to my accountant (it’s my twitter follower demographics) to show that most of my ‘customers’ are American and she agreed with me I did not need to pay GST. You can get yours from https://analytics.twitter.com but it’s not necessary.
How do I claim expenses? What can I claim? First, keep your receipts. Second, do it OFTEN. Try set aside time once a month. Don’t leave it til the end of the financial year because you’ll miss things and you won’t be able to save as much. Here’s a SAMPLE of how I do it: Damn, can you even see this picture? Hope it’s not too small. Basically I keep a running list to the left of everything I can claim 100% of (costumes, tech items, postage etc) and then I have my bills that I can claim PART of for my business on the side NOT included in the total. If you pay RENT you should put that here too because you can claim a portion of it. If you OWN your own house then I recommend NOT including it as you will have to pay capital gains tax and I don’t really understand this but my dad who is an accountant advised me not to. YES I claim tokens I buy on MFC as a business expense. It’s market research. Like if I owned a cake shop and I bought a bunch of different cakes from the competitors for taste testing and analysis. As for what you can claim have a look at this link: https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-detail/Deductions-for-specific-industries-and-occupations/Adult-industry-workers---claiming-work-related-expenses/
What can I claim if I travel for camming?
Quite a lot, actually. If you take the bus to another camgirl’s house to work with her you can claim that bus ticket. If you go to lunch with another camgirl to discuss a show together you can claim that meal. I keep these things in the document shown above. This is why it’s good to keep up with your taxes as you go or at least monthly so you don’t miss anything. If you go on a TRIP for camming, say to Melbourne sexpo, you can claim all travel and food expenses from this trip given you keep good records or a “travel diary” see : https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Deductions-you-can-claim/Vehicle-and-travel-expenses/Keeping-travel-expense-records/ Basically you need to record everything and also the PURPOSE of the business. Here is a very simple SAMPLE for Melbourne Sexpo excluding the travel diary (which you don’t need for less than 6 days anyway)
My PAYG wants a ridiculous amount from me and it’s due soon and I don’t have that kind of money again until my next rank month?!?
It’s okay. Pretend you’re a retailer that sells Christmas trees. You’re going to make basically ALL of your income in December and none the rest of the year and it’s totally unreasonable for you to pay your tax quarterly. Same for camgirls with our usually very varied income. I don’t currently have any of the forms with me so I can’t show you or remember exactly but you can select the option that says your income is seasonal OR the option that says things are going differently for you this year and adjust it accordingly. Don’t know how to do that math? Ask me and I will help!
OKAY. That’s some questions answered for today. I really recommend looking at the ATO website as it has a LOT of information that is really helpful. Any questions please ask me.

How Much Does It Matter That PCs Are Faster Than Consoles?
Earlier this week, I argued that the backward-compatibility features Microsoft is launching with the Xbox Series X will put consoles on an equal footing with PCs for the first time ever. My point was not to claim that PC and console gaming would now literally be identical, but that adding accessory and software backward compatibility represented the last major feature gap between the two platforms and that the Xbox Series X represented a convergence between PC and consoles.
Plenty of readers disagreed. This article is the first of several I intend to write on various counter-arguments or views raised by readers. According to some vehement readers, the entire point of PC gaming is to maintain higher frame rates than anything a console is capable of. Speed (and to a lesser extent, higher detail levels) aren’t just a nice perk — they’re the defining characteristic that separates PC and console gaming. 60fps is one common target, but some of the people who responded claimed higher targets, including 144 and even 240fps. Many of the same people who emphasized this argument made other comments indicating they believed I was a console gamer.
For the record, I’m not. I’d estimate upwards of 95 percent of my total lifetime gaming has been done on a PC, and I’ve been a PC gamer since 1987. Obviously people are allowed to value anything they want about a platform, but I want to talk about the idea that PC gaming is explicitly about high frame rates. I think whether you associate PC gaming
specifically with fast gaming depends, at least in part, on when you grew up.
PCs Used to Be the Slowest Gaming Solution Around
When I was young, PC games were slow. While there were 8-bit machines from Atari and Commodore that offered richer graphics and audio options, the generic hardware in the IBM PC and its immediate successors wasn’t well-suited to fast-paced gaming. Graphics on the PC began as a crude series of static images — the first graphical adventure game, Mystery House, was published in 1980 by On-Line Systems, the forerunner of Sierra On-Line. Lists of the best games of the 1980s are dominated by RPGs, simulations, and adventure games.
Games that primarily relied on typed input mostly didn’t rely on fast gameplay to avoid turning them into inadvertent typing speed tests. Early Sierra games like Kings Quest I – III, Space Quest I and II, Police Quest I, and the original Leisure Suit Larry didn’t even pause the game when you started to type.
I went to my friends’ houses to play games like Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., and Double Dragon because they were faster and smoother than anything I had access to at home. Platforming on the PC in the late 1980s looked like Captain Comic, shown below. I beat this game. It wasn’t nearly as much fun as Super Mario Bros. and it didn’t play as well. This blog post dives into some of the technical reasons why a $2,000 PC in 1991 couldn’t match a $200 console — because, at the time, it couldn’t.
youtube
If you fell in love with PC gaming in this era, it wasn’t because PCs outperformed consoles. It took far longer to load data off a floppy disk or even hard drive than an NES cartridge, and the NES, Genesis, and Super Nintendo had better graphics than the PC at launch. You played Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar instead of Final Fantasy because Ultima IV actually let you talk to each and every NPC, asking them detailed questions about their lives, as opposed to limiting the NPCs to single-response answers. Ultima IV had standard RPG elements like levels and spellcasting, but part of the feeling of progression came from learning which NPCs knew what information and puzzling out various webs of information. Squint a little and it’s an organic quest system without the in-game tracking.
Consoles had nothing to match this kind of capability. In the era before dialog menus, keyboard support made game engines feel as if they supported far richer levels of text interactivity than they actually did. It’s an advantage the PC lost after games moved away from emphasizing text input and towards the use of dialog menus.
In the late 1980s, if you wanted to make a game run meaningfully faster, you copied it to your hard drive. A faster CPU would play animations faster, but games of the day loaded data one screen at a time. Above a certain point, running a game off multiple 5.25-inch floppies and swapping between them hit performance much harder than a slower CPU. You also ran the risk of discovering one of your floppies had gone bad mid-game. If you wanted fast, animated, on-screen gaming, you bought a console. If you wanted deep, thoughtful, slower-paced titles, you played on PC.
Games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom made tremendous waves in the PC market precisely because they were some of the first PC games to offer fast-paced, arcade-like play. But Wolf 3D didn’t show up until 1992, with Doom following in 1993. At the time, I could play Wolfenstein 3D reasonably well on my 386SX-16 with 8MB of RAM, but I had to shrink Doom to postage-stamp size to play it, and the only version of Doom 2 I had access to required a CD-ROM, which my machine didn’t have. I played older games like Civilization on my home PC and titles like Civilization II and Doom 2 on my best friend’s computer, since his parents had bought a 486-DX2. CD-ROM capabilities were huge in the mid-90s and game developers quickly found ways to offer additional features on the CD-ROM versions of their games.
Performance Evolves Slowly
The arrival of 3D cards in the late 1990s revolutionized gaming, but they didn’t immediately unlock super-high frame rates for your average PC gamer. Higher spend has always equaled higher frame rates, but the speed at which the market moved and the higher number of variables to track made it harder and more expensive to get decent performance than it is today. In 1997, if you had money, you bought a Pentium or Pentium II. If you didn’t have money, you bought a K6 or K6-2.
The arrival of Athlon in 1999 kicked off the first high-end war between AMD and Intel, but I’d bought my first system in 1997. As a college student, I was firmly in the “don’t have money” crowd, and these are the kind of frame rates you got from Quake III Arena in 2000 if you had, say, a K6-2 300. All of these graphs are from nearly the same period of time — two articles from Anandtech, written in June and November of 2000. All images below by Anandtech.
Here’s the same test from a K6-3 450:
Finally, the same test at the same resolution, running on an array of higher-end CPUs:
Graph by Anandtech
Only one of those graphs — the last one — looks like the kind of CPU results we see in games today. The K6-3 was so much faster than the K6-2 thanks to the combined impact of an on-die L2 cache and its higher clock speed. What’s unusual is that the large performance gains aren’t confined to the highest-end GPU, but show up even when tested with older cards like the TNT2 Ultra. Even a low-end card like the Voodoo 3 2000 showed much stronger CPU scaling than what we see today. And all of these chips were new by modern standards — the K6-2 300 was less than 2.5 years old in November 2000. The “old” Voodoo 3 2000 was barely 15 months old.
My initial forays into overclocking were driven by a desire to squeeze more performance out of budget hardware so I could game at something that didn’t look like potato quality running at terrible frame rates. That was scarcely uncommon. In the era when CPU and GPU performance were both leaping ahead, relatively few people could afford to stay on the absolute cutting edge of technology. While Quake 3 showed what looks like modern CPU performance clustering, this wasn’t universal. Compare it with Unreal Tournament, from the same review:
Games like Unreal Tournament still showed strong impacts from CPU and illustrated how quickly the market was moving. The Athlon 500 (KX133) that couldn’t even hit 45fps? It was a few days short of its first birthday. If you had wanted to stay on top of that mythical 60fps target, you might have found yourself replacing $500 – $1,000 worth of components every single year. I’m sure some people did. Most didn’t.
The Limits of FPS as a Metric:
There are three specific reasons I’ve spent so much time on the history above. First, I wanted to illustrate how the evolution of gaming itself has changed which system components need to be upgraded in order to improve performance, and how much the position of PCs versus consoles has changed.
Second, I wanted to emphasize that defining PC gaming strictly in terms of high frame rates is ahistorical relative to how many of us experienced that history. The fastest CPU you could buy the month after Quake came out (June 1996) was a Pentium 200 MMX. The minimum CPU requirement for Quake 3 Arena in 1999 was a Pentium II 233. There was no upgrade path between the two platforms. Most PC gamers didn’t spend thousands of dollars every single year to stay current on hardware. You bought when you could, overclocked where you could, and played what you could with the result.
Third, I wanted to discuss how attempting to define gaming superiority in terms of how frame rate punishes PC players who simply can’t afford to spend as much money as others. By extension, it implies that the only valuable games are games that can push PC hardware. There’s nothing wrong with having enough disposable income to choose a higher-performing platform or with loving games that push the envelope, but you aren’t less of a PC gamer just because you game on a low-end PC. One of the best aspects of the indie boom has been a proliferation of games that don’t require much in the way of hardware. A low-end 2019 laptop may not play much in the way of modern titles, but it’ll play the biggest hits of 1997 – 2007 just fine.
Like a lot of you, I enjoy playing PC games at higher frame rates than consoles typically offer. Like a lot of you, I consider this a major strength. I don’t, however, consider higher frame rates to be an intrinsic advantage of the platform. They’re only an advantage if you have access to them in the first place, and not all PC gamers do. There are a lot of flaws in the Steam Hardware Survey, but according to the best data we have, the GTX 1060, 1050 Ti, and 1050 are the top three GPUs on the market today, with 28.92 percent of the market between them. The people who buy those GPUs are still PC gamers, but they aren’t necessarily enjoying better frame rates than they’d see on an Xbox One X.
I’m happy to acknowledge superior performance as a current perk of building a high-end gaming PC, but you can love PC gaming passionately and be stuck doing it on old equipment. There’s no question that it’ll be possible to build a PC that outperforms the Xbox Series X,
but I don’t consider faster frame rates to be a fundamental characteristic of PC gaming as a category — just a really nice benefit I’m happy to take advantage of when I have the money and the opportunity.

Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I’ve been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I’ve been to the same one four times because I’ve only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.
My first convention was all about having fun and learning 🙂
Obviously I’d love to go to an actual writing convention because I’d be more likely to find my target audience, but the SCC is still a very new thing here in Mackay and I am still very much an ingenue when it comes to the publishing world, so this is definitely one of those “Think globally, act locally, events for me.
I’m glad to say that I’ve been with the SCC since their inception back in 2014, and I am very thrilled to say that I’ve learned a lot in those four years- perhaps even enough to warrant me passing my advice along becuase I myself have been frustrated when it comes to researching how best to navigate these events, especially as an author.
My first ever Convention set-up. Not very attention grabbing, is it? It looks like the booth of a beauty sales consultant.
The start of my convention evolution was a little bit embarrassing. I’d only been self-published for just over a year and all I had to offer potential readers was links to e-books and some brochures, which I tried hawking over a plastic-coated foldable table. I managed to raffle off a Kindle E-Reader that first year which at least gave some people a reason to come hang near my booth and jot down their e-mail addresses for me, but I’m not very good with being the pushy sales chick and I never actually used those e-mail addresses for anything so in the end, the most I got out of that event was a teeny tiny bit of promotion.
Second year’s booth- hit the ground running 🙂
My second year was a little bit better. By then I had one book in paperback and I ordered in a lot of copies, in addition to getting business cards and better brochures, and I went to a lot more trouble with my booth. I made fancy decorations out of old books, had posters printed up to blow up my various book covers so that they could be pinned to my backing panel behind me, and actually took along my computer so I’d have something to do other than sit and stare at the people passing me by. That was a much better year, but the entire event was a lot bigger and better in general so it was pretty hard to steal attention away from the other vendors. I sold a lot of copies of my novels, but I chose my solitary YA title to print (because it was the smallest) and that definitely limited my reach because I am first and foremost an adult paranormal fantasy writer. I also printed out lots of samples of my other books and had a demo of a second novel ready to place orders for, which did generate a lot of sales. I was learning but I was learning too slowly and I knew that I needed to plan well in advance the following year if I was going to have a hope of getting my name and my work truly out there.
I’m still very proud of these home made decorations
This was how I packaged the ordered copies when they came in. Sah cute, yeah?
Next came 2016, which was definitely my best year. The convention had grown into its larger venue and the crowd was twice the size of the year before thanks to the fact that we had some fantastically talented people front up for the SCC, including a well-known actor and an incredibly talented young writer, Will Kostakis. I was asked to appear on a panel that year, along with Will Kostakis and another local author, Sharon Johnston to talk about how we got into writing- Will being the award-winner, Sharon the one that had official representation and me- the poor man’s Indie. That was lot of fun and a great experience, and although I don’t know if that got a lot more people heading my way, it certainly attracted the attention of one or two. I was much better prepared that year- I’d just produced my first original play so I spliced footage from that with my book trailers and played it on repeat on my computer so I had better visual aids, and by then I had 4 different paperbacks to sell and I happily almost sold out. I’d upgraded my brochures yet again, added in some book marks and printed out 18 posters while running a free promotion for several of my other novels on Kindle at the same time, so if there was anything that anyone wanted to read, they had the option of buying it then and there in paperback, or downloading it free.

My 2017 booth- simple with lots of titles for sale!
Yes 2016 was definitly a successful year but like I said, the SCC was growing so by then there were 6 other writers present, so it was a good thing that I’d gone in prepared because it was much harder to stand out in that sea of faces.
I’ve just done my 4th SCC and although it probably should have been my best year yet, I found that it was pretty hard to top 2016. Not only because an economic downturn led to the event being down-sized in general, but because I didn’t actually make the decision to attend until 2 weeks before so I was grossly underprepared. I ended up having to order books at the last minute in bulk from Create Space which means the postage for each book cost as much as the titles themselves (and literally arrived the afternoon beforehand!), and I didn’t think of anything new to do with my booth so it was a lot simpler than it had been before. In fact, the highlight of this event for me was the fact that I finally got into the Cosplay spirit!
There were no other authors this year, but I didn’t rate that as being an advantage because it meant that the people that came were mostly drawn in by all of the sci-fi and cosplay stuff. I sold quite a lot of books still and managed to generate some great publicity for my upcoming shows and a collection of local ghost stories that I’m writing, but I definitely wish that I’d been better prepared and had had something new to offer people. That’s definitely the issue with being a small-town writer; if you don’t keep evolving, you go stale.
So here are my personal tips and tricks for representing yourself as an author at a convention- especially if you’re not attending an author-only convention and are competing with the special guest artists and cosplayers that the atendees are lining up for:
Go to some effort with your booth. You’ll likely be supplied with one table, one chair and a backing panel just like everyone else, so be prepared to make it all it can be. Table covers, covers for backing panels, posters, props- make the space look eye-catching. Please try to theme it or keep the colours simple though, because people do judge books- and authors- by their covers.
Find out if you have power and use it accordingly. I definitely wish I’d upgraded my PC display this year because I’ve found that it gives potential customers the chance to drift your way without being forced to have to look or speak to you if they don’t want to. All of the vendors are selling something and selling hard, and most atendees will do their best to maintain a safe distance between themselves and the desperate sales person eyeballing them until they’re as interested as you’d like them to be. A lot of people would advise you to call out to each one or do the ‘hard sell’ but I wouldn’t recommend it. When it comes to books someone is either a reader or they’re not, and readers know what they like to read. If your cover doesn’t hook them, then trying to talk them into it will scare them off more quickly. In fact whenever anyone drifts my way and starts eyeing my book covers I always test the waters first by saying: ‘Are you a reader?’ If the answer is no, then I know to tread carefully and offer them a pretty book mark. If the answer is yes, I ask them what genre they like. If it’s not something I write, I’ll talk to them about what they’re interested in instead and let them decide if they want to know more about me. Once again, I’m not going to waste my time or anyone else’s trying to convince a hard-core fantasy reader to buy a book about zombies.
Keep yourself occupied without actually going too far and making yourself look unapproachable. I take notebooks to doodle in because I can get a lot done without shutting myself off or getting overly distracted by technology.
Have things to sell or give away- I cannot stress this enough. Running a bunch of free books on Kindle might seem like a great idea, but a lot of people won’t go to the trouble of looking you up once they get home if left to their own devices. And be prepared to sell too: have a lot of copies on hand, change, bags, bookmarks and I would highly reccommend that you have one of those personal eftpos machines or at least have your internet banking details, a means to connect to the internet and an invoice book on hand. This year the thing that handicapped me the most was the money thing: the venue had one ATM that died in the first hour, leaving people with only the cash they had and their ATM cards. I’d learned from 2015 to get a portable card reader so I had that as back up but unfortunately, the signal on my phone was too weak to hook the thing up with the app and so I lost a lot of sales that way, as did all of the vendors. Next year when I go back I’ll take a portable wi-fi device to be safe.
Have something to give away to keep you in people’s minds, but if you can’t afford to go big, don’t. Giving away a Kindle loaded with my books was a great idea, but that only really appealed to e-book readers and in a town like mine, that cuts out 70% of your potential customers. Giving away an iPad is expensive and not likely to pay off for you because everyone will enter into that, so you could waste your time trying to hook the attention of people that want the iPad so they can use Instagram, not so they can read off it. If money is no option then by all mens, raffle off an elephant if you’re so inclined, but I’ve discovered that personalised bookmarks are the best way to go. They’re cheap, they’re relevant to the sutomers you want to make a connection with and a lot less likely to be thrown out than a glossy brochure will be.
Link your social media to your event- run competitions using your pen name as a hashtag and get yourself some authentic likes. This year I did a few things- I used my booth to take ticket bookings for my next play, offered a special discount off my next book for people that pre-ordered it before midnight, and tied my appearance at the Con to a cover reveal for my next book online. Just be careful to walk that fine line between self-promotion and spamming, whatever you do.
And last but not least, get into the spirit of things! Pop culture conventions are all about the cosplay, so find something to wear that’ll make it clear that you’re there not only as a vendor but as a fan of the experience in general. I’ve heard some authors say that they rate dressing up as a character from their own books, but mine aren’t really distinctive enough for that yet, so I decided to dress as Ariel, given that I have three books out about mermaids. It meant that I had to get up a lot earlier and was a lot less comfortable than I had been the prior years, but it was a lot of fun!
So here I am, hoping that 2018 is gonna be the year that I get it right, so if you have any tips for me, please share away!
To convention or not to convention? That is the question. Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I've been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I've been to the same one four times because I've only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.

Do you have any tips on selling your artwork, like prints and stuff? Best sites to use, prices etc. Would love some advice :)
(Sorry for taking so long to answer, I have this thing a lot where I see a message during the day and go “yep I’ll answer that later” and then a narrator voice happens saying ‘and she never did’ so...)
One of the easiest ways to start would be to use a site like RedBubble or Society6, which produce all the items for you so all you have to do is sign up, set up pieces, and determine your cut of the sales. I utilize RedBubble for phone cases since that’s something I haven’t figured out how to produce on my own, but generally it’s a safe way to start. No investment from you, you don’t have to fulfill orders, easy enough.
The huge downside of those types of site is that the artist’s cut is very small and so something that sells for like, 30 dollars, you’re only making a few bucks off of. While you can adjust the sliding scale and get a bigger cut, that makes your item more expensive, and you’re at this point where you’re like “would anyone buy this for 25 when other people on this site are selling it for 20″. Again, the huge advantage is that you’re not responsible for the actual production and if you’re starting out or don’t have the means to produce items, those sites are certainly what I would advise.
If you have the means to produce what you sell - prints are typically easiest because all you need is a decent printer - then there’s a few options. Storeenvy is sort of popular as an alternative to Etsy, and it doesn’t charge you any listing fees or anything. But to participate in their “market” - aka, to participate in a way that they MIGHT drive traffic to your store - you gotta pay. It’s excellent if you need an independent store front and are going to be the sole driver of traffic to the page, but if you’re hoping to get some help...
...then Etsy is still your best bet. You pay a listing fee for each item you put up, and each sale has a small fee as well, but honestly I still prefer that than having to foot all the traffic to my store front. You know why? They have a search. People search Etsy. People can find my store completely independent of me and that’s good. Lots of people have Etsy accounts, or in the very least, a lot of people KNOW Etsy and are fine with trusting it to shop at.
Which, if anyone wants to sign up for Etsy, use this link because you get free listings and I get free listings so everyone wins. \oAo/
As far as pricing, that is something you have to research to determine what works for you. You absolutely need to take into account the cost of materials and the labor you are going to put into putting together an order (the “handling” part of shipping and handling”). I looked at several different Etsy stores to see where I felt comfortable placing my prices. You have to find a balance between being competitive but also taking some pride in your work and sticking to your guns.
Lastly, a HUUUUUGE thing that a lot of people mess up on in the beginning is shipping. Shipping is a pain in the ass and can get really expensive very quickly if you’re not careful. Don’t go out and buy the 100 pack of ULINE envelopes if you’re not going to use them. Go to the store and pick up a 5-pack of bubble envelopes (the USPS now puts out a 6x9 envelope that is plastic and bubble-lined which is awesome because it’s waterproof and cushy and it’s like $2 for 5) to start off with, or something similar. Don’t go crazy with the packaging unless you have to, because people really don’t care so much about how stuff looks, they just want their merch safely. Number one priority is getting people their stuff in one safe and un-damaged piece.
(Side note: research postal pricing like holy crap. Rates went up AGAIN this year and are an annual thorn in my side. Also, do not use Etsy to buy international postage, they rip you off because they do not allow you to buy First Class International envelope rates, just package rates, which is almost always excessive when you’re in the print business. I use Paypal for all my non-US packages that fall into the weight limit of First Class envelope mailing because Paypal does allow that. It is the difference between the UK having to owe me $13 in shipping versus $6. I can’t control postal rates, but I can do my best to get people a fair price.)
#sorry if this is vague#pricing yourself is always going to be difficult#and the HUGE factor in it is just confidence and staying fair to yourself#non non#replies

The most effective method to Picked and Contract a Divorce Lawyer Who Is Directly For You
Finding the correct lawyer for your divorce can be a genuine test. It requires posing explicit inquiries and finding a way to figure out which lawyer is best for you in your own unique case. Picking an inappropriate lawyer may at last cost you a lot of cash, time, and dissatisfaction. Divorce can be a profoundly enthusiastic, distressing, and scaring process. There is no zone of the law that requires as a lot of desk work or the rounding out and recording of structures and different reports. This procedure can be befuddling and expensive, both monetarily and inwardly. Therefore, your decision of a divorce lawyer might be one of the most significant choices you put forth in your defense. Few out of every odd lawyer will be directly for you. You should be certain that your way of thinking of how to deal with your divorce case coordinates that of your lawyer, and that you two are 'in agreement.' Along these lines, you should pose inquiries and assemble data which uncover the lawyer's way of thinking for taking care of divorces. This guide will assist you with understanding the significant realities and questions you should know and manage while choosing your divorce lawyer. By seeing how to choose the correct divorce lawyer for you and your exceptional case, you will get past your divorce with minimal measure of cost and stress. Examining Your Lawyer When you have chosen a lawyer to meet with, the following thing you ought to do is to get some answers concerning the lawyer's expert experience and foundation. There are a few different ways to do this: 1. Search the Web: Make a Google look for your lawyer. Search for a lawful blog, a site, reports citing or highlighting the lawyer, and other online data. In a perfect world, your lawyer ought to commit practically the entirety of their training to divorce law. 2. Contact the New York State Office of Court Organization: This office can disclose to you when the lawyer was confessed to provide legal counsel in New York, where the individual went to class and when the person in question graduated, and whether the lawyer is on favorable terms or has a record of disciplinary activities. 3. Make an inquiry or two: You ought to solicit your hover from companions and expert consultants (bookkeepers, lawyers, marriage specialists, and so forth) what they think about the lawyer, or on the off chance that they know somebody who knows about the lawyer. Reaching the Lawyer's Office and Planning Your Underlying Discussion Since you have chosen a lawyer to meet and have done research on that person, the subsequent stage is to contact the lawyer's office and timetable an arrangement. You can get familiar with a great deal about how your lawyer will act in the event that you hold the person in question just by how the individual handles the basic yet significant undertaking of planning a gathering with you, a potential new customer. You should initially contact the lawyer's office by phone or email and solicitation an arrangement. At the point when you do this, it is essential to tell the lawyer's office that you might want to talk about a divorce case. Take cautious note of how rapidly your message is replied. Your request ought to consistently be addressed immediately, and that implies inside 24 hours. In the event that the lawyer you reached can't figure out how to answer to a potential new customer who is bringing the person in question another case and in this way new expenses, that reality should disclose to you something about how the individual will carry on once the person as of now has your cash. Additionally, give close consideration to who you manage in setting the arrangement and how you are dealt with. Most great divorce lawyers depend on a colleague to plan their arrangements, and that individual is regularly answerable for a significant part of the everyday interchanges and collaborations with you once you procure your lawyer. In the event that you are not happy with the associate who sets your arrangement, it is an indication that the lawyer may not be directly for you and your case. At last, you ought to get some information about the expense of the underlying conference. A decent divorce lawyer will frequently charge an underlying interview expense equivalent to one hour of their time at their typical hourly rate. This charge as a rule is credited to your record in the event that you in the long run contract the lawyer. Visiting Your Lawyer's Office; What You See and Hear is The thing that You Get The experience of meeting your lawyer at their office is basic to deciding if this lawyer is a solid match for you and your uncommon case. A lawyer's office is, essentially, their expert home. What's more, the guidelines that apply to a lawyer's expert home are equivalent to those that apply to your own home. Thus, you should give cautious consideration to what you see and hear in your lawyer's office. 1. Visit during typical business hours. I attempt to empower my potential new customers to visit my office during typical hours when my staff is available. Why? Since I need them to meet my staff and see exactly how well they deal with customers. While I additionally keep night hours for the accommodation of some potential customers, those customers don't get the chance to watch the workplace completely at work. In this way, so as to have the option to watch the lawyer, the workplace, and staff in their ordinary work schedule, I propose you plan your arrangement during typical business hours at whatever point conceivable. 2. Is the workplace flawless and clean? This discloses to you something about how sorted out and centered the lawyer is. On the off chance that the workplace is a wreck and there are papers and documents all over the place, envision how that will influence the lawyer's capacity to discover your record and manage your case at crucial points in time. 3. How does the lawyer and their worker's carry on towards you and one another? It is essential to see how the lawyer's staff treat you and each other during your visit. What you see when you are there is probably going to be their best conduct. In the event that you are not very much dealt with during your visit or you watch unseemly conduct during your visit, you can be sure this direct will deteriorate once you are a customer of the firm and the lawyer has your cash close by. Meeting Your Lawyer; 9 Inquiries You Ought to Consistently Pose Getting ready for your meeting with your lawyer will assist you with settling on a superior and increasingly educated choice. You ought to arrange conversation points preceding gathering and carry with you any applicable administrative work. Your lawyer may require a portion of the archives you carry with you so be arranged and hold duplicates for your own records. In the event that you can, you ought to record dates and times of occasions, the names and addresses of any observers and some other significant realities. You should attempt to comprehend that lawyers have proficient and moral duties to the entirety of their different customers, so you ought to anticipate that your meeting should last around 30-45 minutes all things considered. During the meeting, you will have the option to explain to your lawyer why you are getting divorced, and what issues should be tended to with respect to your kids, your property, and your obligations. Sooner or later during the gathering, you ought to have the option to pose inquiries about your case. You should attempt to record the same number of your inquiries as you can before the gathering with the goal that you ensure you make sure to ask them. As far as I can tell, there are nine inquiries you ought to consistently pose to a divorce lawyer during your meeting. The responses to these inquiries will reveal to you a decent arrangement about your lawyer and on the off chance that the individual in question is directly for you. 1. What amount of experience do you have with cases like mine? 2. What amount of your training is committed to divorce law? 3. What different kinds of cases do you handle? 4. How would you speak with customers? For instance, email, instant message, phone, normal mail? 5. How quick do you answer calls and different interchanges from customers? 6. What amount of will your administrations cost me, and what is your forthright retainer expense? 7. Do you bill for ordinary business 'overhead, for example, faxes, postage, and photocopies? 8. To what extent does a case like mine normally take if there are no uncommon improvements? 9. What is your way of thinking or style of dealing with divorces? Why? How Aspire Vape Saved My Life
When I stopped smoking it was a scenario not unlike many other people. My reason was my kids, not wanting me to continue to do myself harm smoking despite the warnings. So it was at this point that I had a big choice, quit entirely, take one of the other long standing options that were available or struggle. By chance a new vape shop had opened up nearby and I took it as a sign and went in one day, to enquire about this new way of quitting, vaping. A day or two later I had picked up my first kit, a cheap product that did its job but by no means was it ever a long lasting solution. This is when Aspire came along.
I had nothing but issues with the first kit I had, it never had a brand name and it was barely able to do the job but I persevered for around a month before finally I was ready to give it up. How could it be so difficult to vape I wondered? The leaking, the poor flavour, the tendency to burn coils out quickly, it was all driving me back to smoking no matter how hard it was, I resisted, and there came a point which changed my life entirely. I either had to give vaping one more chance or admit failure, so I went back to that vape shop one more time hoping for an answer and when I walked out, it led me here one step at a time.
The shopkeeper could understand my troubles, with the vast array of products in the shop, even back in 2014, there was plenty of choice but very little advice out there as to what was best to buy. I spoke to the shopkeeper, almost poured my heart out in a desperation to have an answer to my problem and there he recommend a tank to me. I had never heard of the tank before, the name of it did sound very striking though, The Aspire Nautilus mini. It was a funny little thing, metal and glass with a curvy top piece, it didn’t look too dissimilar to what I already had but willing to give it one last go, I paid for the tank and left the shop. I quickly learned how it all worked with the little tube like coil inside and the airflow, it felt good, it felt expensive and I started to get a good feeling about it. Waiting for the coil to prime that first time felt like an eternity, so much hope in what proved to be the last chance at quitting for me, seeing the coloured liquid inside filled me with anticipation and excitement to finally try a real tank. After waiting for about an hour I took the first pull and what followed was pure joy.
The flavour, the vapour production, how easy it was to vape. All these hit me at once and it was that moment it changed vaping for me completely. From that day I became a fan of Aspire and my enthusiasm has never gone away. What followed was my vaping journey, my real vaping journey being able to taste all the different liquids out there knowing my little nautilus mini was there for the ride alongside me. I discovered my favourite flavours, I learned about how ohms worked, I upgraded my mod to an Aspire CF battery to match it, despite the size difference. I was one step away from wearing an Aspire hat and t shirt, praising how good they were to my smoking friends whilst they asked to try it out for themselves. One of my friends even picked their own Nautilus tank and CF battery up to try, encouraged by my enthusiasm that these devices had stopped me smoking. It was around 4-5 months down the line that it started to dawn on me that I hadn’t smoked in all this time, I hadn’t even considered it. My Nautilus mini had made things fun, enjoyable, tasty even for want of a better word. That little kit served me wonderfully for around 18 months before I moved onto something bigger and better but the quality wasn’t there. What I perceived to be better was simply a fad, nothing like the excitement that I felt back on day one of my journey.
It was 2016 before I started to fall out of love with vaping. Moving elsewhere had not left me with the same excitement that I felt before and it started to become a chore. I was seeing more and more products fill the market and I even bought one or two of them but they weren’t the same, not by a long shot. It was then I had started to consider giving up entirely. I had dropped my nicotine down to sub ohm level anyway, I figured how hard would it be giving up now? However a snap decision one night, around April time if I recall, that again woke vaping up for me once more and firmly got me to where I am now. I agreed to sell a mod to someone, one I guess I was meant to be enjoying but it never really connected. The price was about 30-40 pounds but late that night I decided to sell it for a meagre £18, with a plan in mind. A website had the brand new Aspire Cleito tank in stock for that price with free postage, I decided to take the gamble and swapped a mod worth a lot of money for a little 3ml tank, much like how I had started 2 years before that.
It never really dawned on me at the time but the excitement waiting for the postman to come with my new Cleito tank was quite large at the time. I had tried sub ohm vaping before but I never really enjoyed it much , the low power of the old nautilus mini in the cupboard wasn’t doing it for me any more neither. When the postman arrived later that week I eagerly rushed to open the envelope and pull out something that I never knew would blow me away so much. I filled the little glass tank up with a liquid I enjoyed somewhat in my other tank, waited for it to soak into the cotton and before long took my first pull. The experience was amazing, it took me back to the beginning and I got all the joy right back again. The flavour from this little tank was unbelievable and the vapour production even at 55w was incredible. It blew any other tank I had tried out of the water entirely, it tasted crisp, flavourful and satisfying. What then started was my true journey into sub ohm vaping and I got to enjoy it alongside my new little buddy, the Aspire Cleito.
I used that tank for about 18 months every single day. I never thought of replacing it because I was enjoying to far too much. Sure there were other tanks out there promising to do all this and more but I knew deep down that they wouldn’t be as enjoyable as this little Cleito. Flavours from liquids I bought came alive in my mouth, all the little notes of a custard, the fruitiness of a juice, it all shone through and I was enjoying vaping again. The same friend who had been inspired to buy a nautilus went out and bought his own Cleito. In fact when I did decide to finally replace the tank it wasn’t to another brand but it was to the Cleito 120. Once again my experiences just got better and better and for a long time my Clietos just made vaping so enjoyable. It was a no brainer that I rushed to buy the Skystar kit at launch and discovered another brilliant little tank in the Revvo, which was so enjoyable to use. The Skystar sits proudly in my cupboard to this day, every now and again I put some batteries in her to just enjoy the experience.
So sitting here now, with my Dynamo mod and Cleito 120 pro tank sitting proudly on top, reminiscing about my journey to get here. I realise back when I started 5 years ago, Aspire really did save my life. If I hadn’t have bought the Nautilus when I did, I probably would have given up vaping and fell right back into smoking. I felt at the time I was looking for an excuse to give up and the Nautilus changed all of that. Even when I decided to pick up the Cleito, if I had chosen another tank then perhaps I would have stopped entirely. I wouldn’t have been able to discover my favourite juices or experience the excitement any more of seeing what is coming out next from Aspire. Despite all of this, I sit here today to proudly still call myself a vaper and an Aspire fan. They were the company at the very start and as long as I keep vaping, they will always be by my side.

Our Biggest Year...
I’ve been collecting my thoughts, but no one REALLY likes hoarders...
First, and most important...THANK YOU! To everyone...
The MRPC, The United Parish of Lunenburg, everyone...
We shot 152 sessions in 2018. In 2017 we shot 138. As a reminder, in 2015 we shot 21.
It’s not the 168 that I initially thought, and I’ll get to that...

You voted for two puppy names this year. It was a tight race for a while, but when the next few batch of puppies comes in to start their training at NEADS, there will be...

______________
We had at least three dogs have “accidents” on the floor. Including these two Great Dane pups... They are not labs... Part of the fun...
One of them started to go, and it was as if the other one said “Oh, is this what we’re doing now?” and let it rip... while walking around... everywhere... Part of the fun...
We had return customers...
Some people coming in for their fourth time...
We had new folks...
We had new babies...BRAND NEW BABIES...
We had teenagers... holy smokes you guys...just give me one good smile...
Growing families...
Families going through some stuff...keep going...
People bringing their own props...
LOVE THIS!
We had a hell of time finding locations for this year, and I need to do better and plan earlier with this... Gaaahhhh! NETFLIX!! HULU!!! (shakes fist)
Thanks to Glen and the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission for letting me shoot in their entryway for the second weekend.
We were a couple centimeters away from having to cancel one of the days... ahh..documentary photography...
We had college students come in remotely...
We had Emma... who took advantage of me not locking my phone, and gave us this:
I really can’t begin to express how grateful I am for Emma’s willingness to endure long days and limited snack options to help her Uncle Ed with his crazy hobby... Thank you Emma...
The Housh Family came back, and didn’t disappoint...
We had a 12 foot gray paper background, lost on a truck, somewhere in Pennsylvania, so I went to three Targets and a Wal-Mart, the day before Thanksgiving, looking for enough black out curtains, of the same style, in the same color, that I thought maybe I could make work, but they were too short, so on Thanksgiving, I cut one in segments, and taped it to the bottom, and set it up after a quick Thanksgiving dessert with my family, but the seam made everything look weird, so I went home and got a nine foot roll of gray paper, and set it up at dawn the next day, shoot day, but there were some weird lines in it, so I took that down, and put up two black fabric panels which I brought just in case. The sausage got made. Photo Sausage. Trademark.
A few photos were snapped of me...
with Emma goofing off...
with so many Keenans...
with mermaid legs.... thanks Emma...
We celebrated, snacked, and raffled off props...
___________________
So...the nitty gritty, and the lessons...
I had space for 165 sessions, not 168.
We sold out. We had a wait list with 50+ names on it.
Then we had a few cancellations which I filled, then a couple more a day or two before the shoots, and then a few less than 24 hours before the shoot, then less than 12 hours, then a couple no shows.
It’s a lot for me to manage in the middle of prep and shooting and editing, etc..
So, we shot 152 sessions. It’s huge, and I am so proud. Truly.
But it could have been a bit larger. It was supposed to be. I ran out of time and energy when I should have been filling cancelled spaces.
We raffled off the props and prints and brought in an additional $327.
So I’m rounding up a bit, and contributing an additional $973 to get us to the $16,500 that we initially sold out with. It’s our biggest year. Even without the rounding up. $5500 for NEADS, $5500 for the Worcester County Food Bank, and $5500 for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.

________________
So far, in just four years, the Simple Shot Experiment has been able to donate $43,900 in shoot fees.
Sometimes I forget to slow down and to be proud of this, but I really am. I just move on to the next item and don’t take the time to reflect.
receiving a Harvester Award from the Worcester County Food Bank in November
My friend Deb said something like this this to me at the celebration event “You’re showing people that they can make a difference with the skills that they have.”
That made my night.
I really have a great time when I’m shooting. Solving visual problems, while trying to figure out how to make a toddler smile, simultaneously getting multiple dogs’ attention by using a squeaky toy like a thigh master, all while trying my best to have you guys not see me look at the clock, because sometimes twenty minutes goes by REALLY fast when you just need ONE smile out of a teething teenager...and someone showed up early, and, and, and...
It’s a challenge, and I love it
That’s the experiment... How hard can I work, and how much can we raise...
When I finally hang up my camera, or my body gives out, whichever happens first...I want that total donation amount to be significant. I want to know that I have worked hard enough with my limited skillset to make a difference for people and organizations doing REAL good in this world. I imagine it will be a good way to retire.
________________
But it’s getting a little expensive, and it’s just a hobby
So, we’re going to tweak how we do things. Just a bit.
1. We’re going to have people pre-pay when they sign up. People have told me The new system worked well this year.
2. If you have to cancel, you can give away your spot, but I can’t spend the time filling it. It’s too much.
3. The session fee next year will be $110. $100 will be a donation to the charities, and $10 to cover the cost of the hall rentals, postage for gift prints, and the nuts and bolts of doing this.
4. We’re going to sell raffle tickets for props, prints, gift certificates, etc., during the shoot itself. I think we’ll be able to raise more this way. I love seeing people at the celebration event, but it’s a lot of work, and the ROI needs to bump up a bit.
5. I’ll be asking for help. Which I’m not good at. For donation items, for set-up help. For picking up munchkins. Thanks to Simple Shotters Jake and Dan who work at Frito Lay, the snacks are covered for next year.
6. We’re opening registration to everyone, at the same time. Emails and Facebook.
So that’s where we are...
Thank you to everyone for your support and enthusiasm, and coming back year after year. Email or DM me with ideas and suggestions for next year, and I’ll see you in 2019!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

However, the first 2 years I was driving I was with another insurance company and gained 2 years no claims with them. When I took out my latest policy with Direct Line after buying a new vehicle they said they needed to see proof of my no claims. I contacted my old insurance company who sent me a letter confirming these years and I sent this to Direct Line, they said they never received it so I requested another letter and sent this one also but via Recorded Delivery. It is now a month on and Direct Line are claiming they haven't received this one either although proof of postage and tracking shows it was signed for. I wish to cancel my policy with Direct Line and was wondering how much of my policy cost I would be entitled to receive back from them. Many thanks""
Why is my car insurance so high?
I have full coverage insurance on my 2005 Honda civic and I am paying a little over $850 every six months. Every quote I get isn't much better. Why is it so expensive? My insurance lady says that it's because I am a young driver with a newer car. But my YOUNGER sister has a car 2 years newer than mine and she pays about $350 less every six months. I have no tickets on my record. I did have my license suspended about 5 years ago. Why is it so expensive and how can I get it down? I can't afford this sh* t. Thank you!

Insurance Fraud? Help!?
A couple days ago I was driving to a doctors appointment, I was rushing and very nervous. I got to a road that was closed where I had to back up. I looked behind me and saw no cars. Then I started talking to my mother who was in the car about if the road was closed or just partly blocked off. I looked in my mirrors and started to back up, somehow I must have missed the car that was very close behind me. I barely tapped the bumper, my mom didn't even realize it happened that's how slight the tap was. The woman immediately jumped out of her car and started screaming and cussing like a maniac. The police blocking the road even noticed and had to come over to control her. There was no damage to my car or hers, however she was driving a 92 buick and it was a piece of junk. I was worried she'd try to get something out of the whole thing so I took pictures of everything. This must have made her angry and she started trying to take pictures of my mother and I as well as bird poop on my car? Today I got a call from her insurance agency, saying she claimed injuries, a cracked windshield, and a messed up bumper. I am so angry! I know I did not do any damage, much less injure her! I'm a collage student and really can't afford my rates going up because of this. I called my insurance company and sent them pictures. They are trying to investgate. Anyway, has anyone else experienced something like this? How do these things usually turn out? Is this insurance fraud on her part?""

Do I have to list all additional drivers for auto insurance in Ontario?
I am shopping for auto insurance and noticed that if I include my wife and son in the quote, the insurance jumps from $1600 a year to $3100. That's almost double and none of them have any accidents or anything. If I don't include them as secondary drivers, can they still drive the vehicle and be insured? How to convince parents to let me have auto insurance?
I've had my license for a little over three months now. However, I have no insurance, and therefore cannot drive (in California). Their reasoning is that I am an unsafe driver which I disagree with because I quite easily passed my driving test at the DMV and always think before I do anything when I drive. However, they seem firm on their decision... It's a bit frustrating having my license for so long but still being unable to drive. I'm tired of having to always ask friends for a ride or my parents; I just want a taste of independence. Of course, I'm not trying to be too arrogant or stubborn, I've respected my parent's decision, it's just bugging me a bit now haha. The most effective method to Picked and Contract a Divorce Lawyer Who Is Directly For You
Finding the correct lawyer for your divorce can be a genuine test. It requires posing explicit inquiries and finding a way to figure out which lawyer is best for you in your very own uncommon case. Picking an inappropriate lawyer may at last cost you a lot of cash, time, and disappointment. Divorce can be a profoundly passionate, upsetting, and scaring process. There is no territory of the law which requires as a lot of desk work or the rounding out and recording of structures and different reports. This procedure can be confounding and exorbitant, both monetarily and inwardly. Thus, your decision of a divorce lawyer might be one of the most significant choices you put forth in your defense. This guide will assist you with understanding the significant certainties and questions you should know and manage while choosing your divorce lawyer. By seeing how to choose the correct divorce lawyer for you and your exceptional case, you will traverse your divorce with minimal measure of cost and stress.
