I would like to introduce you to an ancient statue called the Aphrodite Kallipygos, or the Venus Callipyge. This literally translates to “The Aphrodite/Venus of the beautiful buttocks”

So here is the Aphrodite with the nice ass

City also called Marmaraereğlisi, Tekirdağ Province. Ancient city name: Parinthos. From the Istanbul Archeological Museum, Istanbul, Turkey.

I took these photos in 2010 when I was in Istanbul. At that time, I didn’t understand exactly who the female figure represented. Now, I’m pretty sure she’s a later version of the Scythian ancestral goddess, whose lower body often ends in curling vegetation.

I haven’t found specific reference to this sculpture in academic research yet, perhaps because they’re later than a lot of Scythian goddess imagery— Roman times, in the 1st or 2nd century CE.

The lower part of her body ends in leaves, and two vines or branches are growing on either side of her, and end in decorative curls. She’s holding the branches. A heart appears over her groin area, and she wears a chiton. A similar tendril goddess figure on a temple to Artemis also has a similarly placed heart. She wears her hair down, though I can’t tell if it’s loose or plaited.
