Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam Reunite for 'Thug Life' – Trisha, Dulquer Salmaan, and Jayam Ravi Join Cast

In a long-anticipated collaboration, legendary actor Kamal Haasan and renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam are joining forces for a film, marking 35 years since their iconic gangster drama ‘Nayakan.’ The film has been officially titled ‘Thug Life,’ and it promises to be an exciting venture with an ensemble cast that includes Trisha, Dulquer Salmaan, and Jayam Ravi in pivotal roles.

The announcement of ‘Thug Life’ was accompanied by a beautifully shot video that showcases Kamal Haasan as Rangaraya Sakthivel Naicker, a name that holds special significance for fans as it was the character Kamal portrayed in ‘Nayakan.’ The video features Kamal Haasan cloaked in a white robe, engaged in a face-off with a group of henchmen. As the tension builds, Kamal dramatically unveils a unique, white outfit before taking on the henchmen in a stylish brawl. While the connection between ‘Thug Life’ and ‘Nayakan’ remains shrouded in mystery, the teaser has left fans eager for more.

Produced by Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, R. Mahendran, and Siva Ananth under the banners of Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies, and Red Giant Movies, the film will reunite the director with his regular collaborators, music composer AR Rahman and editor Sreekar Prasad.

Cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran, known for his work on Mani Ratnam’s earlier films such as ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ and ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu,’ will be behind the camera for ‘Thug Life.’ The action choreography will be orchestrated by the Anbariv masters, who previously worked with Kamal Haasan on ‘Vikram.’ Sharmishta Roy and Ekha Lakhani have been enlisted as the production designer and costume designer, respectively.

‘Thug Life’ is eagerly anticipated and is slated for a theatrical release in 2024, promising an exciting cinematic experience for audiences.

Salaar - Movie Review

Prashant Neel after the successful blockbuster KGF series joined hands with Prabhas for the much anticipated Salaar. Prabhas hasn’t tasted success after Bahubali franchise, major part due to teaming up with inexperienced and non-mass movie directors. This is his 1st proper combination after Rajamouli.

Story :- Vardha (Prithviraj), son of Raja Mannar (Jagapathi Babu) and Deva (Prabhas) are good friends who live in Khansar. Deva is very protective about Vardha and is ready to do anything for his safety. Once Deva and his mother were attacked and Vardha saves them and helps them leave Khansaar. Owing to the same, Deva assures whenever Vardha needs him, he will be there. After few years, Vardha needs the help of Deva and he calls him back to Khansar. Did Deva protect Vardha? What did he do in Khansar? Why did Deva lives in exile after that instance? Forms rest of the story.

Performances :- Prabhas steals the show in action blocks. He’s macho, fierce and calm at the same time. First half he’s controlled by his mother and second half by his friend. But in both cases, once he’s unleashed, there’s no stopping. Prithviraj as his best friend looks apt. We can feel his helplessness, pain and aspiration. He gets to show his action prowess in the last fight and he shines well. Eswari Rao as Prabhas mother has a lengthy role. Though the character pain is understandable, it feels monotonous and lag at few instances. Shruthi Haasan is okay in 1st half. Her role in 2nd half is just like Malavikain KGF, just to narrate/listen to the story. Jagapathi Babu, Bobby Simha, Shriya Reddy, Jhansi, etc have limited scope and they are fine.

Technicians :- Ravi Basrur didn’t live up to the expectations of KGF both in terms of music and background score. Scenes would have been elevated to next level, had the BG was in the range of Dheera Dheera. Movie’s strength is its action episodes. Anbariv did a terrific job with the fights and gave some of the best heroic moments. Prashant Neel used similar screenplay as done for KGF. Arriving at one scene from multiple dimensions and characters. In Salaar, he narrates the story completely backwards, revealing the after effects upfront and showing the reasons that caused it in later part. We may find many similarities between KGF and Salaar, mother sentiment, multiple villains (similar get ups), a tribe of oppressed, etc. Though the action part and elevation scenes work well, the drama is a bit let down with not so emotionally connecting scenes and repetitive actions. Few noteworthy moments are engine ignition sounds when Prabhas controls his anger in 1st half, Prithviraj looking at Prabhas shadow and seeing whether he is in control or about to freak out in action episode of 2nd half. Prashant has created a big canvas with a long history, a place in the map, multiple tribes and their generations, internal rift, power games, etc and amidst all this a warrior on lose who can go to any extent for his friend. He has lot of scope for the 2nd part to play with and the climax sets up the platform perfectly for 2nd part.

★ Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan': Slugfest in the slums for Salman Khan!

Sep 14, 2022  ‘Massive slum set erected at Golden Tobacco Factory for final two-month leg of 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan'; Salman to film action set-pieces designed by 'KGF' stunt directors.

With the December 30 release date looming large, the shoot of Salman Khan-led 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan' is moving at a brisk pace. Director Farhad Samji has kicked off the final leg of the action drama at Golden Tobacco Factory in Vile Parle. It is heard that the studio has been booked for the next two months as Khan and the director film crucial scenes of the movie, which also stars Venkatesh, Pooja Hegde, Jassie Gill, and Asim Riaz. An insider reveals, “Late last month, Salman shot a dance number with Chiranjeevi for 'Godfather' at this studio. The production design team of 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan' utilised the time to build the set of a Mumbai slum at the same venue. As soon as the song was wrapped up, Salman dove into the shoot of the actioner.”

Interestingly, the film was to go on floors in April with the slum schedule. The required set was erected in Film City at the time, under the supervision of then-producer Sajid Nadiadwala. The source explains, “After creative differences emerged between the superstar and Sajid, the set was pulled down. Now, a similar set-up has been built at the current venue.”

Most of the movie’s action sequences will be canned during this schedule. Keen to bring defining stunts to the big screen, Khan has brought south action director duo Anbumani and Arivumani — together known as Anbariv — on board.

 “Salman thoroughly enjoyed the style of action they displayed in the two instalments of KGF. Plus, he shared a great equation with them on 'Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai' [2021]. He thought that Anbariv would be the perfect fit for his next since they understand what appeals to the masses and design stunts for the front-row audience.” While the filming of the December offering is expected to go on till October-end, the edit and VFX work are simultaneously underway.
