My pedalboard - the reasons why

First of course is a tuner. The Korg Pitchblack. I just needed a tuner, this had great reviews and was cheap (used, of course, like all my pedals). That's it.

Not sure I really like compression. Sometimes the added sustain can be useful. I like to think I will train my hands to manage the dynamics, so a compressor would work against it. Therefore, I rarely turn it on, but I do use it. The Boss CS-2 is THE compressor, but I don’t see why spending a lot into it, since the CS-3 does its job greatly. And I can still mod it one day...

Sometimes I need some rotary-like effect for some Pink Floyd tune we cover. Electroharmonix has this Small Stone that is the newer and smaller version of their iconic phaser. Maybe a univibe would be better, but again, no reason to spend that much on an effect I rarely use. This or the MXR Phase 90, which I love and I had used in the past, are both perfect.

My basic sound would be classical rock blues: a tubescreamer must be there somewhere. I chose the EHX East River Drive because I love New York, I love the Electroharmonix guys, and I strongly believe clones are exactly the same as the originals. This tubescreamer clone was realized following the advice of Mike Piera, aka Analogmike (the maker of Analogman pedals and mods), a renown expert of tubescreamers and pedal effects in general. Actually he advised me to buy a real Ibanez Tubescreamer, since it is built like a tank and will last forever and can be easealy modded back to vintage specs. But this guy costs half the price and it is internally made just like the old TS808, not a TS9. I simply love it, but maybe one day an Ibanez will make it to my board.... just for the sake of having the true legend on my pedalboard....

I use it with the gain at 9 or 10. Anyway, my to go pedal, the next in line, does need some treble boost to cut through the mix:

And this is THE ONE! I fell in love with it the moment I heard it on a friend's pedalbord. Some describe it as a tubescreamer on steroids: it has all the low end the TS is lacking. It has incredible dynamics, being so much sensitive to picking strength, guitar volume and tone adjustments. The same friend who first showed this pedal to me also adviced to put a kind of tubescreamer in front of it for solo purposes. This is the most expensive pedal on my board. I bought it used on eBay from the USA on a summer night when no one could see me....

It is version 4 I think, but again I don't care much of those differences....

Oh this one.... my first pedal since a resumed playing. So well built and sounding, born from a collaboration between the revered MXR and CAE, it has also be used by Kenny Wayne Shepard. A friend of mine lent it to me for a while. I soon added the OCD and moved away from digital multi-effects forever. And I bought it...

At high gain it is a bit fuzzy, so it can be useful when needed. I keep it at 9 since it sounds like a tube amplifier on the verge of saturation (well, I have the best solid state amp, the Peavey Bandit 112, and I use the clean channel). It cleans beautifully when I roll back the guitar volume or pick more gently. The built-in clean boost section is really handy at times. Therefore that is my basic sound, over which I add the OCD for higher gains and the TS when I need to cut through the mix.

TC Electronic Afterglow chorus. Well, sometimes I need it. Not particularly crazy about modulation so I got the cheapest good one around. The less expensive pedal on my board! I must say I started to like the chorus effect after I bought it...

Well, one needs a delay sometimes. The best value for money? No question about it: Boss DD-3! No sense in spending the money for a DD-2 or the newest incarnation DD-7. Cheap and reliable, a buffer at the end of my almost all true by-pass pedalboard is very much needed! Ok, it’s digital, but I can make it with just one delay pedal in my pedalboard - If money was not an issue I would gladly go for the analogic MXR Carbon Copy, although one with analog and digital simulations would be a better choice.

Last but not least: what powers it all? Well, the best power unit around. Well worth the investiment!

I hooked the pedals following professional advice from a friend who does it for a living. What to desire more for my MIM Fender Stratocaster Classic Series 50s? Well, maybe a better player? 😜🎸

In summary, I chose all bargains but always quality pedals. I need my pedals to last long and be reliable. I don't do this for collection purposes, i just Iike to play guitar and I don't need to sound exactly like my heroes. I am not interested in buying the same gear famous musicians use. I just need the right ones to achieve my own sound and to be reasonably plausible when I play covers. Let's always remember that when we play live, no one in the attendance will ever care for what pedals, amps or guitars we use. The musical results are important, not the brand of our gear...
