Drew collects 60 Geneva kitchen cabinets — four sets, in all — to get all the pieces for his ‘new’ kitchen
Do you want to build a ‘new’ kitchen using vintage steel kitchen cabinets? Well, buckle up: Because if you’re going to fit someone else’s cabinets into your space, you may have to collect quite a few to fit your kitchen layout. How many? How about: 60. Yes, Drew is most definitely a The Hard Way 2017 contender after collecting 60 vintage Geneva steel kitchen cabinets — from four different sets in four different locations — so that he could get the “just right” layout for his apartment in an historic Chicago complex. And to increase the level of difficulty even more: He hunted a rare “Impasto” finish. That Lazy Daisy was… a unicorn, but he found it!
And after [Tip: On a desktop computer, click on photos and they should double in size on screen]:
A lovely blue kitchen that suits the space beautifully. Thanks to Drew and to realtor Newman Realty Services for permission to show these photos. Yes: The condominium apartment is now for sale here.
Here’s Drew’s kitchen cabinet collecting story, edited for readability and to combine several emails:
Hi Pam,
First off, thank you so much for creating such a valuable resource for all of us. Your blog was a starting point for me, via Google, when I decided to renovate my kitchen and keep my original Geneva Kitchen Cabinets with the Impasto finish.
I’ve been meaning to write to you about my project for some time. My home in Chicago is now on the market, and I’d like to share with you my successfully completed project before it sells.
Long story short: In 2009, I bought an all original 1962 condo in Chicago’s storied Sandburg Terrace housing development.
Sandburg Terrace was designed in the 50s and built in the 60s and early 70s as a urban renewal project on Chicago’s near north side. It’s 2,600 units span four long city blocks. The first building was built in 1962, Alcott, which is the unit where my condo is located.
Drew’s kitchen with the original Genevas with their Impasto finish
The early Sandburg units were built with Geneva cabinets that have the Impasto finish. Mine was originally built with a set of yellow cabinets that were in excellent shape when I bought the unit – the cabinets were the main reason why I purchased my place.
Editor Pam notes: The “Impasto” finish was a nubbly finish created by putting the steel onto an embossed plate. You can see it in the wall cabinet above. It’s likely that manufacturers introduced these sorts of finished to address complaints about fingerprints showing on the smooth finish, and Impasto-like finishes also may have hid dents better. For example: See these vintage Capitol cabinets — their solution was a “color-flecked” sort of granite-like finish — photo also at right.  I’m sure I have other photos of this feature in my brochure library. I’ll get some scans up soon, for the historical record.
It’s really amazzzzzing that Drew was able to find four sets with this less-common — I’m not sure if I should call it “rare”, but it may well be — finish!
  Back to Drew:
I always knew that I wanted to expand the kitchen and about three years ago began searching for additional cabinets. In total, I found four additional sets through Craigslist, ebay and my local salvage store with the same finish — a miracle.
My cabinets came from Geneva, IL; Hartford, CT; and Evanston, IL. They were all different colors. I created an inventory of all the cabinets and then worked on designing my kitchen. Missing ones were identified and purchased one by one using the original sales materials — the Lazy Daisy came out of a barn in southern Illinois.
The cabinets were electrostatically painted by a local commercial coatings specialist in the popular Pantone 2016 “Snorkel Blue” to modernize the cabinets and make them new for a whole new generation to fall in love with them.
I selected a KOHLER Cast Iron undermount sink and a Silestone “Mont Blanc” countertop that kept with the spirit of the original gold flecks. The widespread faucet is the same manufacturer as what was original to the unit: Central Brass in Ohio [Amazon affiliate link – Pam]. The original ceiling fixture was restored and painted to match the cabinets.
Appliances are from the GE Artistry series [now discontinued but it looks like there is some last stock remaining in stores – Pam] completed my retro look.
At the height of my collection of Geneva cabinets, I had over 60 pieces split between my condo, two storage units, and a friend’s basement. All extra cabinets found new homes with people who were as passionate about them as I am.
Your blog was key to inspiring me to do the project, find the sources, and make sure I restored everything correctly.
I used a German Chromium cream to shine all the original hardware, which was boiled first in a crockpot to clean off years of exposure to great meals. The bumpers were replaced on all the drawers and doors with modern door mutes, and all the original metal coated shelves got a bath in Dawn in my bathtub – it was an overnight treatment.  [Readers: Do your own research / consult with pros when making decisions on how to clean old stuff. Renovate Safe – Pam]
It’s bittersweet that happy life events have caused me to put my place on the market.
Additionally, the bathroom was restored similarly. All the chrome fixtures are new in box Hall-Mack fixtures from the 1960s and I replaced all the original Central Brass fixtures in the sink and tub with new ones from the company. A friend of mine in the design trade restored the original Hollywood ceiling fixture. The medicine cabinet and mirror are original to the unit.
Thanks for the chance to share my story with you — and thanks again for all the inspiration!
 Best regards, Drew
Howdy hudee, Drew, what an accomplishment! 60 cabinets — from four different kitchens! I had 67 before I started ‘made it’ by just one filler piece, but all my cabinets came from one space, a cooking-school kitchen. Your story, though, is way more typical. You get many many gold stars for tenacity!
Thank you for sharing your story — and good luck with the sale and your next adventures. It will be interesting, for sure, to hear what comments are made by prospective buyers.
Link love:

Grey Based Decor With Warming Accent Colours
Be guided through three inspirational home interior tours that use accents of sumptuous teal, autumnal shades of brown or one multicoloured blast in order to bring life and warmth to a plain grey decor scheme. The three modern homes also harbour bespoke storage solutions that could be adapted to many different styles and sizes of home. Flush-fit cupboards along a lounge, glass crockery cabinets that skim the ceiling line of a dining room, plus hallway storage that doubles as a dressing room. Top this off with modern lighting schemes and statement pendants, fresh and fabulous kitchens, a cool contemporary fireplace installation and unique TV wall decor.
Visualizer: Tatyana Polyakova   Our first interior is a contemporary apartment painted in a smooth mid-grey tone that edges toward the blue end of the spectrum. The blue tinged grey tone has been selected to complement teal accent furniture and soft furnishings, like the winged accent chair and floor length window drapes.
The sofa fabric is light grey so as not to overdo the blue in the scheme.
The teal accent chair stands in front of bespoke fitted units that feature a bookcase niche. The cupboard doors are an unusual combination of natural walnut and whitewashed wood. Two white wall clocks match the lighter volumes.
A deep shelf runs the length of a wood slatted TV wall. The shelf is chamfered at each end to make way for TV soundsticks. Indoor plants brighten the look of the room.
In the centre of the open plan kitchen, a round glass dining table reflects the natural light from a large window.
A cluster of glass orb dining pendant lights descend over the dining table surface.
Opening a cupboard door in the hallway reveals a hidden seat below a coat hanging rail.
Visualizer: Głogowscy Architektura   Our second design is a conceptual house in Katowice, which features living rooms with large wall art.
Beige wall art and sofa cushions lift the grey scheme. Two parts of a sectional sofa are joined by a metallic side table set at their centre. An irregular shaped coffee table has a marbled top, which complements the swirling grain of the TV wall decor.
The TV wall is a unique installation that divides the lounge from the view of the kitchen. A letterbox shaped niche has been set low in the frame to hold a clock and other knick-knacks.
A large blue-grey pendant shade crowns the dining area, where russet brown dining chairs surround a white rectangular table.
From the dining room we can see that a modern fireplace with a double aspect separates the lounge from the hallway.
A bespoke bank of glass units flank the dining suite, wall mounted with their base at kitchen bench height and their tops touching the ceiling. Crockery and wine glasses are displayed across the shelves.
The kitchen design is simple and open on a textured grey backdrop.
A log store is cut into one side of the modern feature fireplace, which divides the grey chimney breast from a beige kitchen.
In the kitchen, it becomes apparent that the dividing wall that is the TV wall in the lounge is also used as a stem on which to place a bank of kitchen larder units and integrated appliances.
Bespoke storage units are fitted right into the eaves to maximise space.
An open fronted closet is set behind the chimney breast.
Clean grey and white decor receives no extra coloured accents in the bathroom.
A home office is accented in blue and brown.
Visualizer: Sergey Makhno and Artem Meshchankin   Our next private apartment, located in Ukraine, Kiyv, is a completely grey affair except for one very obvious accent. A large round multicolour rug dominates the living room. An orb shade floor lamp echoes the rugs dominant round shape.
Behind the lounge there is a tall shelving unit that holds a couple of red kitchen accessories, which pick out a tone from the bright rug.
A designer table lamp tops a low storage unit behind the sofa. In front of the sofa, one entire wall has been kitted out with cabinets that can be harnessed for media storage, an overspill of best crockery from the kitchen diner and other oversized surplus from around the home.
LED lighting strips edge the shelves and backsplash in the kitchen diner.
Large deer themed artwork adorns one white wall. White gloss interior doors blend with the plain decor.
Unique kitchen pendant lights dominate the kitchen space, hovering like a pair of alien spacecraft over the peninsula.
The modern kitchen with island is made up of wood and black slab fronted units, topped in pale grey granite.
An undermount rectangular kitchen sink gives the countertop a sharp finish.
The white bathroom has the same pale granite finish over one entire wall and across the floor. A wall mounted vanity unit spans the width of the room, running from a built-in shower cubicle to a modern toilet with concealed cistern.
Storage units have been designed to line the length of the hallway.
Amongst the units there is a coat closet that’s been left open fronted with a hanging rail on one side. In the other half of the installation, a makeup vanity with a huge mirror has been constructed. A dressing table stool is nestled beneath, where underlighting makes the unit look clean and elegant. Slender struts support the weight of the cabinets off the floor.
