thinking about that post pointing out that Lucanis coming home to Antiva as an abomination would be A Huge Deal and how Illario would be side eyeing him the whole time wondering "is that my cousin or the demon?" and never really knowing, maybe making peace that his cousin died on that boat one way or another and this Thing wearing his face isn't him, it's far too different and new, so he can just kill it and feel nothing except it gets a little too close to Zara and Rook is joined at the hip with the demon at this point so we can't have them learning about anything, so he'll just kill Zara and maybe the demon if he can manage it! easy one-two problem solver if Rook just doesn't see any of it happening! except then he kills Zara and the demon actually pops out and he has to stare his cousin in the face as the man fights to keep him safe from it, how he's handed undeniable proof that Lucanis is still in there, has been there the whole time, that his cousin is alive and Wrong and it's all his fault, but everything is in motion now, there's no stopping this, and he has to come to terms with killing his brother all over again

I will say I'm not an Illario girly but I do understand. Like. For one that's the morally dubious crowd we were promised. For another. The scene where he breaks Zaras neck SLAPS. The way she calls out to him as Amatus. The way she looks at him. The way he's so quick with it. The breaking of trust on BOTH sides because it's the moment we know for certain he's betrayed Lucanis but ALSO the moment he betrays Zara thus making him impossibly and completely alone. It just. It SLAPS man. It 100% slaps.

Ok DA girlies I need us all to work together and come up with a solution to the First Talon problem. The First Talon problem being that Lucanis would be literally dead within a year of Caterina dying and Illario being a fucking idiot. So how do we keep them (mainly Lucanis but I do have a soft spot for ignored idiot siblings) alive? Give First Talon to Viago? Fake Lucanis's death and have him and Rook run off to Rivain together? Give it to Illario and hope for the best?

Now I'm not an Illario girlie, so this might have been covered by the fandom already and I just haven't seen it. But hear me out... What if Illario's hypothetical demon was one of desire, not envy? Because yes, he wants what Lucanis has. That's Envy. But also he WANTS it, and desire demons can work on more impulses than just sex and lust.

Idk. I saw a ficlet in the Lucanis tag a few minutes ago where Spite kills a desire demon and thought it'd be just as good a match for Illario as Envy would.

This is such a weird connection to make but Veilguard is really truly making me so sympathetic toward those girlies that read sjm books and have whole essay length discussions about politics and messaging just because the potential was there and wasn't used. Like I really get why there are entire book rewrites up on ao3 by people because this game is driving me insane with the possibilities of what we could have had. And that is coming from someone who liked and enjoyed the game as is and will probably continue to play it alongside the other DA games. I mean Lucanis's arc alone was so fucking bare bones and unresolved I've been laying awake for two days thinking about how to possibly fix it, starting with the fact that Illario and Zara so obviously should have switched positions in who was manipulator/manipulatee, and that's not even going into how they could have expanded on Tevinter politics or elven politics or warden politics... the potential was right there!!!!
