Tell me about your cozy mystery!
Thank you, I would love to! Last year especially I read a lot of cozy mystery series that follow the general formula of: [young/just divorced] woman [moves back to/never left] her hometown b/c of some event; stumbles across a murder that she has to solve for personal reasons while also [starting own business/saving family business/etc.]; meets the love interest (usually a cop) in book 1 and they are engaged by anywhere from book 2-8.
Anyway, there were some I really enjoyed and some that got old fast, and eventually I decided that none of them were going to have exactly all the things I like, so I should write one myself. Self-indulgent things I wanted include a very gnc heroine, and a love interest who is not just described as "handsome" upon first meeting. (Also, spoilers for like book 4 in a series I haven't written yet, but: he's going to have to quit his job as a cop before they actually get together.)
I have a rough draft of the whole first "book" written (under 40k words still) and plans for the next 3 or so, but I need to go back through and add more details and description and probably character development. Anyway, if this does make it to a library shelf as a paperback cozy mystery someday, it will probably be called something like Death at Dockside, and the blurb would look something like this:
Brid Moore never thought she would end up back in her hometown of historic Smithstown, VA, wearing knee breeches as a reenactor in her parents' General Store by day, and working as a dockhand at her friend's family restaurant in the evening. But after falling out with her best friend and housemate, quitting her job, and moving out of their apartment in the DC suburbs, she had nowhere else to go.
Luckily, work has been keeping her too busy to mope, and when the body of an annoying tourist is found in the restaurant bathroom, Brid's life is about to get busier yet! She'll need to keep her wits about her and draw on new friends and old to clear her friend's name, keep the restaurant open, and most importantly, catch a killer!
#i did my best to make the blurb sound like the other cozy mysteries i read#anyway i go back and forth a lot on whether i think this is something that could really get published someday#but i'm having lots of fun writing it!#an ask#an answer#on writing

Idk if it's specifically the aspect of feeling "timed" that turns you off farming sims, but if it is I highly recommend Rune Factory 4, it's more of a farming rpg than harvest moon, but not too far from stardew and there's almost zero time constraints on it. There's not even a strict bedtime (not really a bedtime at all actually)
IT 100% IS FEELING TIMED,,, I hate being timed or feeling like I am. I've heard An Amount abt the Rune Factory series... hmm...

ah, i know this place. lovely and lost, hm? all your hurt tumbling inside of you, unwashed and unsorted. you find yourself stuck in the tumult, unable to figure out what you even feel at this point. it shreds you on every pass, but it refuses to settle, so you just sit there, knowing you should do-something-about-it. it comes back around again, and it is infuriating. how could they, why did this happen, why didn't you just. what comes next? what are you supposed to do? what are you supposed to want? if you had a direction, a desire, a guiding star - you'd be able to just go, and walk. but you are here, in this place without north. you are here, and gravity barely works. every echo feels like fog. you are a parcel of a person; barely whole, wondering what happened to you. how you got flattened into a faceless person. how are you supposed to move in the direction of your goals when you have no idea what the goal is even supposed to sound like? how are you supposed to know? i will tell you something that is good for both of us: sometimes, you just know. sometimes we know and we don't want to hear the answer. sometimes we know and we are ignoring it. you know you need to leave him, that you love her, that they aren't really your friend. i will tell you something else: the answer sometimes never comes. and what is best in that moment, where you have nothing and no one? little blue night hawk - i love you. give up looking for what is right. give up looking for best-option. instead just choose - what feels like forwards? what feels like up? choose what you need. chew off your wrist if you need to get unstuck. but go. and maybe one day, the answer will come.

Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.
LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.
Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

#unforth rambles#fuck ai#llms#sorry but i think this every time I see a reblog with more haha funny answers#how many tries did it take to generate the absurd#how many resources got wasted just to prove what we already know - that these tools are a joke#please stop contributing to this

42, 45 and 50? I hope you're doing well 🌼
Thank you!! I am, I hope you are as well!
42. Do you buy hardcover book copies for previously purchased paperbacks and library books you enjoyed reading?
Short answer is no; longer answer is, if I really enjoy a library book, I'll buy whatever (usually used) copy I can find, whether paperback or hardcover! But I don't specifically seek out nicer versions of books I already own. I like hardcovers fine, but I like paperbacks for their portability!
45. What book(s) would you sell your soul to get a TV or movie adaptation of?
OK, this got me thinking in an interesting way: generally, I prefer reading things to watching things, so for adaptations of anything fictional, I'm probably always going to prefer the book, because if things look different on screen than in my head, I'll decide that the things on screen are wrong. But it might be interesting to have some documentary version of a good nonfiction book, because some facts are easier to show on screen than to describe in words! Probably I would watch something based on one of the obscure books about oceanic voyages I read.
50. What kind of book have you never read but always hope to find at some point in the future?
I read this question in two ways: it could be asking a genre of book I don't read but would try, in which case I'd say probably horror; having read some things by T. Kingfisher, I'm willing to maybe try a few other authors in the genre. Or it could mean the white whale of books that I'm always seeking, in which case I'd say: probably the ideal cozy mystery, which is why I keep reading them, and also why I started writing one myself when my list of "ideal cozy mystery elements" got too long!
(Feel free to send me numbers from the ask game here!)
#an ask#an answer#i am incapable of just answering a question simply lol#do other people long for movie/TV adaptations? i am generally indifferent b/c i know i probably won't watch them#thanks for the ask!

horrible thing i’ve done is i already planned out my datv rook and her entire family. they have personalities and extended families. now i have to sit with her for 6 months 😭😭😭😭 i even made them all in the sims with canon appropriate outfits. i can’t live like this
OH HONEY. GOD FUCKIN SPEED o7
ngl I kind of did that with my Inq but before I had a computer that could run DA:I, and then got disappointed that there were no hairstyles with his hair texture and length, which kinda extended to most all of his fam ;w;
After that, I've Learned. I'll let myself get into the Broad Strokes. not the full design. Not yet.
#Anons#An Answer#DA Blogging#can't stop thinking abt nb qunari Rook who did actually name themself after the chess piece.#that changes their name with every job/group they join. a variation of the way names under the qun work. y'know
