The Pack | Chapter 9

The next morning Dylan was still passed out at 2 PM when I was waking up. I woke up to a bunch of texts from my Dad on a topic I was avoiding.

Our old house, the one we lived in while my mom was sick. My dad couldn’t bare it so we moved but he kept the house Incase I’d want it. But I was old enough to decide for myself and if I didn’t want it, he was going to sell it.

He always started this conversation with: “you know I don’t want you to move out.” I knew I should probably be on my own by now but he was all alone and I wasn’t ready either.

Everyone I knew even Alex had her own apartment and Dylan rooming with Tyler. I slinked out of bed trying not to wake Dylan up but at all cost I needed coffee.

Their kitchen was huge, surrounded by windows and light. It looked unused which wasn’t surprising. Tyler was already up putting together himself some coffee and immediately grabbed a second cup for me without asking. He said, “Figured you’d be up. Yesterday was too long. Dyl asleep?”

I nodded adding some sugar and creamer to the coffee he poured me. I said to Tyler, “Sorry about Brody. He’s extra.”

Tyler laughed it off like a true alpha, “My first girlfriend was when I was 11 and didn’t end until 6 months ago. I get it. You end up having to choose between friends or more.”

I was shocked he got it and wasn’t judging. “Yeah, he didn’t like that I didn’t choose more or least sex.”

Tyler was wide awake, amped almost, “Let’s grab some grub! Dyl is gonna be out for a while.”

I debated for a minuet while finishing my coffee, “Okay, I can grab Dylan some food. Oh we’re making a pit stop. I’ll drive.”

I was already in my clothes because I didn’t have PJs at his place but Tyler ran upstairs to grab a shirt and his vans. I jingled my keys in my hand at the door. I knew I was forgetting something, my bag in Dylan’s car. I left the door open while I rummaged through his unlocked Jeep finding my bag in his back seat.

I looked in the zipped pocket for the set of keys I would need for the pit stop. She left a key chain on it, a little message in a bottle except it was filled with sand from her favorite beach and no message. I connected them to my current house and car keys kneeing exactly how I was going to decide.

I shouted for Tyler as he ran out, admiring my BMW with a casual phrase: “Nice whip, man.”

I started up the car while he pulled out his phone texting. I pulled mine out too texting Dylan but Tyler said he did already. “He was still passed out. With his ass in the air.” Maybe I could bond with his bestie instead of him doubting us.

I took off to my old house telling Tyler pit stop first. I went into auto pilot, we lived there until I was 16, that’s also when she died. It was a Tuscan style house with a fairy tale backyard and pool. It was a little bigger then our current home.

I pulled into the drive Way and Tyler asked, “You’re place?” I turned off the car, “Yeah, now it is.”

I saw the for sale sign that had been there for two years but my dad denied every offer. I removed the for sale part of the sign and b-lined it to opened the door that I haven’t done in 5 years. “This was our old house before my mom died. My dad is demanding I decide on owning it or selling it.”

Posey immediately took me into his arms whispering, “I’m so sorry.” I appreciated his response but I didn’t need it. Not knowing him but sleeping with Dylan made it awkward.

“Anyways, I just needed to see if it was the same. Empty. Or different. Keys still work. Let’s get some food. He’s gotta he awake by now.”

Outside I saw across the street, our neighbors were the same, Brody’s parents. I saw Brody go to his Porsche parked outside and stiffened. The last time I saw him was at the burger shop. He pulled out of his driving not seeing me or my car until he stopped in the middle of the road and got out.

He was writing something and shouting as he walked over, “Yo this house isn’t for sale. What did you pay? I’ll write a check plus 10%.”

“That’s my best friend’s girlfriend. Keep that in mind.” Tyler said he was gonna explore the backyard but only for a minuet.

Brody immediately closed me in against my car and his face was close to mine, “What’s going on with us? Are you done hanging out with that Teen Wolf kid? Baby. I miss you.” I kept looking down hoping he wouldn’t try anything but then I felt his hand curve around to my back slightly pushing my ass towards him making our bodies touch.

They were standing very close before Dylan backed up throwing his hands up, “You can’t just go running into danger!” “Why not? Scott would for us!” “Because I fricken love you Lydia!” She stuttered and stammered, “Wha- I didn’t –“ “Well now you know. I love you and I can’t let you do this. You can’t get hurt.”

Holland stepped into him with her arms around his neck and they kissed. Dylan’s hands were on her waist but slowly moved a little lower on her body. Their bodies found his bed and she straddled him. Hey so like, I wonder if TF2 Tumblr people know about the Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades "Meat Fortress" crossover's unique weapons?

Basically there's this really in-depth VR gun simulator and it had an official TF2 crossover a while ago that's still getting new stuff added for it, and along with the default TF2 weapons (plus beta-inspired grenades with some original ones thrown in, and alternate ammo types for most weapon types, none of which I will be covering in this post for image-limit reasons) it also has a bunch of custom weapons made specifically for it!

Also yes, as you'd expect, they feel kinda weird to use compared to the more realistic options the game is based around.

Can you all believe it's almost been one year since I started this solo project!

I've created over 400 images, written over 45000 words, and coded close to 10000 lines for my visual novel fanfic. And, with every image I draw, every word I write, and every line of code...it amps the appreciation I have for all the people who worked on the stories in Lovestruck. It's a lot of hard work, a lot of coffee and boba, a lot of late nights. This is as close as I can get, stepping into all their shoes.

Long Dreams of Hope

Only my second release of 2024 and most of the music from it was recorded in 2023. I've been finding it hard lately to finish things. I actually found this folder on my server called "next" which had all these tracks on it that i clearly intended to do something with last year, while saving a folder called "next" of things i recorded this year. so yeah i'm kinda behind. (the 2024 "next" folder is mostly mix downs from the last few live sets of 2023/2024. i hope to upload those soon. really)

i am oddly very proud of this album. mostly because while i've been listening to the final mixes and masters i continue to be delighted by the various sounds and melodies. so much so that i feel i want to add some context to each track.

1) "The Feeling of Seeing the Shapes of Sound": i tend toward fading in tracks or starting pieces from silence and slowly bringing in layers. but the abrupt start, with the kinda crackle/static, gave me warped tape vibes that i really enjoyed.

2) "Dance Butterfly Rosebush" i dont think there is any guitar on this. i believe its mostly op-1 and rhodes. i really like the the melody line that comes in around 2:30 and then is joined by another pretty lines around 3:44. it feels like a church hymn. you may be wondering "cinchel there is so much clipping distortion. why didnt you re-record some parts?" and my answer is: i have spent a lot of time over the last 12 years trying to make sterile and/or "pure" ambient music. but the more i've worked the more i have considered my origins which is really a teenager with a guitar learning 90's grunge and punk songs. distortion and rough edges added to the emotional context of so much of my early music listening. so i didnt feel i could recreate the emotional context in these recordings if i tried to do them again. also a few of the clips/static noises i felt were my (poor at best) homage to alva noto. some are from one of my amps that is just wonky.

3)"Living in a World Where Things Are Much to Big for Me" you can hear my breath, the movement and tap of my hands while i record this auto-harp, the sounds of me moving around my studio. this was again a conscious choice, to leave in the room sounds, giving the piece more air and space. i like the tremolo of the rhodes speaker cabinet but that means i have to put the mic pretty much by my feet while i play the piano. i liked the acoustic sound of the autoharp recorded with mix of contact mics and room mics. again me trying to incorporate some of the ideas of the 'lowercase noise' music of the early 2000's. while also mixing in a lot of synthetic sounds, manipulated from these acoustic recordings. again no guitar on this one either. mostly op-1, rhodes and autoharp.

4) "Go Somewhere and Stay Nowhere" not much to add. more room sound. more mistakes and happy accidents. i mostly focused on embracing what i would usually classify as "cheesy synth sounds" that feels very "pure moods" to me but are in a nice contrasting playful conversation with the toy glockenspiel.

I'm glued to my screen, begging you to infodump to me about lol professionals doing bad builds (also lol item optimisation in general)

The thing that inspired me to make that post was this screenshot a friend sent me of an LPL game. I don’t know which game or which player is the offending person here and I don’t care:

Look at the Leblanc’s items. For those who haven’t been keeping up with LoL meta, Statikk Shiv Leblanc is really popular right now because the ap scaling on statikk shiv gives Leblanc a way to finally clear minion waves without using her W and putting herself at risk. Additionally the statikk shiv proc’s ap scaling gives her enough burst on auto attacks that when paired with items like Night Harvester and Lich Bane it makes her a legitimate threat, despite the fact that you are building an ad marksman item on an ap assassin.

However if you look at the Leblanc in that picture you’ll notice she doesn’t have any ap, she built full ad. Most people would write this off as completely troll because Leblanc has no ad scalings, but I am not most people, I got m7 Ahri by playing exclusively ad Ahri, I like off meta builds that use champions in unique ways. Ad Leblanc has been an off meta build for years because her ranged auto atttacks combined with absurd mobility of her W and RW lets her stay in range to do serious auto attack damage. The Leblanc player in the picture seems to be taking ad Leblanc and statikk shiv Leblanc and trying to fuse the builds. However their build fucking sucks for reasons I will now get into.

Statikk Shiv only scales with ap and level, so without any ap this Leblanc can’t even one-shit backline caster minions. With Statikk Shiv, Essence Reaver, and Stormrazor, the purpose of this build is clearly to front load as much damage into the first auto attack as possible, which is a strange but understandable goal for a build. But even disregarding the question of the viability of ad Leblanc, the mythic item choice of Duskblade of Draktharr is an objectively terrible choice for this build. Said 3 item combo of Shiv, Reaver, and Razor are all attack damage + critical strike items designed to deal frontloaded damage, which give Leblanc a total of 60% critical strike chance. With so much invested in ad and crit you would expect them to go for a critical strike mythic item like Navori Quickblades (ad, crit, cooldowns, ability damage amp), Infinity Edge (ad, crit, crits do more damage), or Galeforce (ad, crit, a dash that deals execute damage and gives you even more mobility). But they picked Duskblade of Draktharr, a lethality item for ad assassins that gives armor penetration, cooldown reduction, a temporary untargetability on takedown, and increase on ability damage against low health targets. Duskblade gives no critical strike, doesn’t help frontload damage on auto attacks, doesn’t help leblancs magic damage abilities penetrate armor, and amplifies the damage of Leblanc’s abilities even though this is an auto attack based build. If Leblanc wanted her abilities to hurt more, she would just build ap. So why did the pro player pick Duskblade of Draktharr? Likely because Duskblade used to be an item that frontloads damage on auto attacks by increasing the damage of your first attack after exiting stealth or the fog of war. Duskblade was reworked completely about 4 patches ago in the same patch that made Statikk Shiv into the item that Leblanc currently loved for ap scaling waveclear and burst. While I don’t know exactly why this player chose to build the way they did, I can make a decent guess that they didn’t know Duskblade got reworked.

As I said in my original post, LoL pro players got to where they are usually by having mechanical skill, not game knowledge. This is especially true of the LPL (Chinese league) and LCK (Korean league) where scouts will watch VODs of players throughout their regions massive playerbases and look solely for those who have good mechanics, because the coaches can just teach them everything else. The players learn how to play their champions and use their fast reaction time and hands to pilot them expertly, while they don’t have to worry about what to build or what is meta because their team’s coaches and analysts tell them what to pick and what to build. This makes sense in terms of creating a league of the best LoL players possible, but it also creates the bizarre current scenario where you will frequently see pro players that don’t even know exactly what their character’s abilities do or don’t understand what items they should build in what circumstances, because they can usually get by with building whatever is the most strong build of the current patch. It’s not just one guy building ad Leblanc and buying a mythic item that is effectively almost useless on his build, it’s players buying grievous wounds items against team comps that don’t have healing, players buying void staff against comps with no tanks or magic resist stackers, players purchasing armor items against magic damage lane opponents, and just hundreds of other small mistakes that very rarely affect the overall outcome of the game but are objectively bad decisions that drive people like me insane. This is less of a problem when their teams have good analysts and coaches with a good understanding of the game, but understandably they are usually focused on things like team decision making, coordination, teamfight callouts, and a hundred other things that are just as important to winning a game as buying the right items. I don’t envy pro players with all the things they have to do and the absurd number of games they have to play to stay relevant, but I reserve the right to harshly judge their itemization choices, as they are supposed to be the best players at this game in the world. I’ve honestly only scratched the surface of bad pro builds but I don’t have any other specific examples to point out right now so

One last thing: there are soooo many pro players who don’t know the details of their champion abilities and how they interact with other champions, and they are frequently unaware of the optimizations people who play their champions have made. The smart pros will talk to one tricks of the champions when they become meta and will learn tips and tricks from them, but very few actually bother. Poppy is my most played champion of all time, and now that she’s meta I have to suffer through watching pro players that don’t seem to know that you can cancel Poppy’s ult channel to put it on its reduced cooldown by recalling, instead of waiting for the full channel duration to time out or just throwing it out and missing. Poppy’s ultimate is an absurdly powerful tool, and if you don’t see an opening for it after you start charging it up you can literally just press the b key and it’ll be back up in just a few seconds

Normally, I just go with lower resolution for better framerate, but this time I actually tried out different settings like the grain and both are solid. Dead Space's dark vibe even looks sick at 30fps in 4K. In most survival horror games, I usually keep the grain filters on for that creepy vibe. But this time, I switched them off and went for the smooth 60fps—it's just such a slick experience. Everyone has their preference, but you won't regret it either way. The sound design is on point too. One standout feature is Isaac's breathing and heart rate, which amp up during tense moments, adding serious immersion. Another cool thing is the controller speaker, which pumps out all those little audio details like menu sounds and ambient effects, giving a nostalgic nod to Dead Space fans. It's a nice touch that stays solid throughout the game.

Upgrades and Deluxe Edition Suits in Dead Space

I remembered most parts of the game as they were, but there was this one section with asteroids later on that got a major upgrade and made my playthrough way better. The biggest improvement was the asteroid mission. In the original, it was a drag—you're stuck in a seat, shooting asteroids with an AA gun, and it's clunky as heck. In the remake, they scrapped that whole setup. Now, you're out on the ship's hull, darting between AA guns, powering them up, and locking onto asteroids. Once each gun's set, they auto-target and defend the ship.
