this one is a vague complaint and not something I want to like append to anything specific but the whole claim about 'real chronic pain' vs 'the tumblr kind' is so fucking bizarre to me. for followers who don't know, I'm 29 and I've been out of education since before graduating high school bc I got incredibly sick (glandular fever induced M.E. immediately followed by worsening of lifelong migraines that left me bedbound for 2 years + almost completey housebound for 10 years) that have only responded to treatment within the last three years, specifically because they invented a new class of drugs.
right now I'm in the middle of completing my HS education and applying to study neuroscience or biomed at university. my main motivation for doing this is that I've been reading (bio)medical papers for self-study (and just for fun if I'm being honest, I really like this kind of science) for years but I've pretty much hit the wall of what it's possible to learn without Going To School For It. my secondary motivation is that I'd really like to do biomedical research, ideally into migraines because that's the shit that ruined my life, but I have a whole load of other areas of interest, one of which is chronic pain and the things that make it so complicated to understand and treat.
the idea that "chronic pain" is some monolithic condition with like one cause and one solution is insane and the idea of standing up and saying it with full-throated confidence doesn't make any sense to me for any person with even a shred of knowledge about how pain signalling works in the human body.
one of the core symptoms of autism — which a really high percentage of tumblr users have — is that your body responds to completely harmless sensory inputs as if they were painful, and there's enough research been published to say fairly definitively this happens largely because your body physiologically processes that sensation as a noxious stimulus.* autistic people are also among the most likely members of the population to develop myriad chronic pain conditions. these things are probably fucking related even if we don't have the exact biological mechanism by which it happens pinned down yet!
the whole reason I responded to those post is that i really fucking care about this shit, and being presented as some wanker who makes shit up to seem cool and interesting on tumblr does actually really upset me. i specifically spent quite a long time editing those responses to be, like, affable and not critical of the posters or possible to read as mean or snotty in any way. I know this wasn't my fault and it's clear from the tone of those posts that they have no intention of engaging in a way that isn't obnoxious and argumentative, but it feels pretty shitty anyway.
whatever man. i just want people to look after themselves. if you'll allow me one shoebox moment: if you find yourself having to take OTC pain medication on a daily or near-daily basis, something is wrong with your body or your lifestyle or both and you should seek help for that whenever you are able. it may seem obvious to say, but sometimes people need reminding that being in pain every single day is not normal. love you all.

(Article's date: 2014) I think that President Obama’s attempt to destabilize Russia will be seen by history as disastrous as George Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Like the Iraq war, the de facto declaration of “war by other means” against Russia will accelerate the very dynamic that it intends to halt: the steady weakening of U.S. imperialism’s grip on the world. It will increase the resolve of a host of nations to disengage themselves from American madness and to strengthen collaboration and cooperation among many countries, and not just Russia and China.
The result will be the exact opposite of Washington’s intention. The attempt to isolate and destabilize Russia, the other nuclear superpower, may appear to some to be an act of brashness, a flexing of American muscle, an act of imperial overconfidence and recklessness. People thought the same thing when Bush went into Iraq. They were shocked and more than a little bit awed. In fact, sometimes I think that Americans are more shocked and awed by the American military than anybody else. But the Iraq invasion, and the brazen offensive against Russia, as well as the so-called “Pivot Against China” and the octopus-like U.S. military entrenchment in Africa — these are really symptoms of weakness and desperation.
U.S. Imperialism is losing its grip on the world and responds to its weakening condition with massive campaigns of destabilization. Destabilization characterizes U.S. foreign policy today more than any other word. The purpose is to reverse the general dynamic of global affairs today in which U.S. influence and power shrinks in relative terms as the rest of the world develops. U.S. and European hegemony — and that is the ability to dictate the terms of economic and political life on the planet — has daily diminished in myriad objective ways, ways that we can measure by the numbers. China’s soon-to-be status as the world’s biggest economy is just one aspect of that decline.
The process is inexorable and it’s gaining momentum. The trajectory of imperial decline has been firmly set ever since the Western capitalists decided to move the production of things — that, is the industrial base — to the South and the rest of the planet. Inevitably power and influence follow and imperial hegemony diminishes. This is of course unacceptable to the rulers of the United States who now find themselves in objective opposition to all manifestations of collaboration and mutual development under terms that are not dictated by Washington. They are in objective opposition to all manifestations of independence by countries in the world. This applies not just to China, not just to China and Russia, but to the rest of the BRICS and to other developing nations. And it even applies to America’s closest allies.
That is because hegemons don’t really have allies. All they have are subordinates, and so the U.S. is quite prepared to do serious harm to European economic interests by pressuring them to break long established economic ties to Russia. They will ultimately do the same thing in the pacific region with China and cause great destabilization there. They do so not because of strength but because of growing relative weakness. Their desperation compels them to risk war because their only clear superiority is in weapons.
However, the net end result, if we survive these flirtations with all-out war, can only be further isolation of the United States and the further weakening of imperialism. I think there is on what passes for the left in the United States a tendency to describe U.S. aggressions like the Iraq war, like the current offensive against Russia, as mistakes and miscalculations: “They didn’t mean to do that.”
In reality the U.S. goes to the brink and beyond the brink of war because it perceives itself as having no other choice. Its soft power is fading. It has few other means beyond the military to strategically influence events. It recruits or buys allies where it can get them, be it jihadists or Nazis. As imperialism’s sway in the world shrinks, so do its options.
U.S. policymakers surveyed the world in 2002 and in 2003 and they concluded that the dynamic in Asia was going against them. They knew that most of the world would be horrified with a war against Iraq, but they rolled the dice anyway and invaded. The net result was the opposite of what they intended. The U.S. was humiliated and the U.S. was humiliated so badly that the rulers of the United States chose to put a dramatically different face on U.S. power — a Black face, Barack Obama.
Iraq was supposed to be a forward U.S. base in Asia to disrupt China’s growing ties in the region. Instead the Iraq war exposed U.S. imperialism’s weaknesses. In the days before that invasion, we wrote in Black Commentator that the U.S. had reached too far and succeeded only in accelerating the process of its own decline. Today Barack Obama is rolling the dice just like George Bush did. To sever Russia’s ties to Europe, Washington has surveyed the global scene and concluded that it has no other choice. The result will be a strengthening of ties between Russia and China, a great anxiety and rethinking among Europeans about their ties to the United States which is about to harm their economy, and an acceleration of imperialism’s death spiral.

Long Covid affecting one in seven patients in Bristol area - Published Sept 1, 2024
There are striking inequalities in rates of Long Covid across the country
One in seven patients in some parts of Bristol have Long Covid, and you can now see the figures for your area using our interactive gadget. A new report by Health Equity North has revealed striking inequalities in rates of Long Covid across the country, with a clear North-South divide in the figures.
Their analysis of GP Patient Survey data from 2022 found the North West had the highest number of people reporting Long Covid symptoms (5.5%) followed by the North East and Yorkshire (5.1%). The regions with the lowest rates were the South West (3.4%) and the South East (3.6%), while the rate in London stood at 4.8% - slightly higher than the national average of 4.4% across England.
However, in one Bristol GP practice - Pilning Surgery - one in seven patients (14%) reported having Long Covid.
Long Covid includes physical, cognitive and mental impairments, with brain fog, fatigue, breathlessness, low mood, and depression among the most common symptoms. Across England, 1.9 million people were experiencing a myriad of self-reported Long Covid symptoms as of March 2023, with 79% saying it has had a negative impact on their day-to-day activities.
Fatigue was named as the most common symptom, and over half reported reduced functionality in their everyday activities, which resulted in their inability to return to work.
During the research, one participant said: “At one point, more than once, I was surprised to wake up the next morning.
"I felt like I was having stroke-like symptoms, the pressure in my head. I couldn’t move enough to either call for my children or to reach for my phone to get help. I think I lost consciousness.
"The next morning, I was like, I can’t believe I’m waking up. I wrote my end of life wishes and told my kids what to do if I didn’t make it.”
The report’s findings have prompted calls for more research into Long Covid, and for the Government to implement care plans to facilitate rehabilitation and management of the condition.
Dr Stephanie Scott, lead author of the report and Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Newcastle University, said: “Long Covid is a complex condition that goes beyond physical and mental symptoms, affecting other parts of people’s lives including their sense of self and professional identity. This can then lead to experiences of social isolation.
“Currently, there is little evidence-based treatment for Long Covid and the health system focuses on symptom management. This needs to change.
"Our research has offered a glimpse into the reality of what it is like to live with this often-debilitating condition and the knock-on effects it has on people’s personal and professional lives.
“I hope that the evidence presented in this report cuts through to policymakers and gets the attention it deserves so more research into Long Covid is funded, and so measures can be put into place which enables employers to better support their workforce with Long Covid.”

Infection
An infection occurrs when a microorganism (or pathogen) enters a person's body and causes harm. This in turn elicits a response from the immune system. Its reaction to the invading organism and how it tries to eliminate it dictate the symptoms of the infection.
Infections are caused by a myriad of organisms, such as fungi, viruses or bacteria. Once they're inside the body, they will try to reproduce and use the body's resources to sustain themselves, reproduce, and colonize. The immune system is pretty good at stopping them, but it isn't infallible.
Contact with a contaminated object, skin contact, airborne particles, infected food or water, and body fluid transmission are some the ways infections may spread. Symptomatology will depend on the pathogen in question, site of infection, and available resources (such as medical care and medication); among a few others.
While the immune system is a decent barrier, it can be overwhelmed by the pathogen. This is the point where an infection goes from mild to severe and starts causing severe complications. There are many, but among them is death. Though death isn't the only one which may prove fatal.

I’ve been meaning to get something like this done for a bit, and this post from @my-autism-adhd-blog gave me the nudge to type it out.
I’m keeping it here in my own post, though, to not clog their notes too much. 😅
I’m sure anyone with an invisible illness or neurodivergence has had to come up against the idea of “Well, back in my day, no one ever had [very real problem you are suffering from], we just bucked up and deal with life!”
Oh, really?
Do you [theoretical irritating naysayer] know when the term anaphylaxis was coined?
You know, “hypersensitivity (as to foreign proteins or drugs) resulting from sensitization following prior contact with the causative agent”?
The potentially fatal reaction where people can lose the ability to breathe? A very real, repeatedly proven reality for a large segment of the population?
It was created in 1905.
(I’d go into more about the individual who named it, but he also subscribed to a lot of the worst fields of thought in the early 20th century and therefore we shall move on.)
On the other hand, we have writings explicitly referencing horse allergies from the turn of BCE to CE (one of the sons of Roman Emperor Claudius), among others.
What we now recognize as Seasonal Allergies have been identified around the 16th century, under names like “rose catarrh” (as in, a believed reaction to roses, most likely a reaction to the pollen of other plants during their blooming season) and “summer asthma” (asthma being used as a general term for an ability to breathe).
What fascinates me is the end of the 18th century, where
Seasonal allergic rhinitis was now often observed and recognized. The term “hay fever” replaced “rose cold.” Physicians believed seasonal allergies were an aristocratic disease because it was most commonly diagnosed among the upper class. (emphasis mine, taken from document described below)
Huh, I wonder why upper class people would be the ones most diagnosed with seasonal allergies? I wonder what myriad of reasons could lead the financially secure to seek out personal aide for non-debilitating but extremely uncomfortable symptoms?
Not the least of which being a lifestyle which allows it to be merely non-debilitating.
Anyway….
At some point I want to fully read this summary of the book Ancestors of Allergy edited by F. Estelle R. Simons (as getting my hands on the text itself would be more effort than it’s worth for me personally). What I’ve skimmed thus far is fascinating.
Here’s a timeline from those 16th century misclassifications of seasonal allergies to the present understanding of allergic reactions (as the source from that one quote from above):
It’s humbling to see the development of understanding and acceptance towards a medical condition we take existing for granted nowadays.
On the other hand, the length of time it took to clarify these experiences when they have indisputable physical symptoms (if sometimes difficult to identify triggers) can be disheartening when we thing about where the scientific community currently is regarding mental health, neurodivergence, and invisible illnesses.
But my main take away in this review of the history of allergies:
It was never new. It had always been there, people had always suffered from it. The only things that changed were the public perception of the condition and the treatments afforded to people struggling under things other people dismiss.

Given the gravity of IHD, the global medical community emphasizes the essence of early detection and prompt intervention to manage its repercussions effectively.
A New Age in Healthcare: Embracing Data Science

Drawn to the immense potential ML holds, I ventured into a research project aimed at harnessing the RandomForestClassifier model's capabilities. Within the medical research sphere, this model is celebrated for its robustness and adaptability, making it a prime choice for my endeavor.
Deep Dive into the Findings
The results from the ML model were heartening. With an accuracy rate of 90%, the model’s prowess in discerning the presence of IHD based on an array of parameters was evident. Such a high accuracy rate is pivotal, considering the stakes at hand – the very health of a human heart. 9 times out of 10 the model is correct at its predictions.
Breaking down the data, some correlations with IHD stood out prominently:
Moderate COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) – 15%: COPD's inclusion is noteworthy. While primarily a lung condition, its linkage with heart health has been a topic of numerous studies. A compromised respiratory system can inadvertently strain the heart, underscoring the interconnectedness of our bodily systems.
Diabetes – 18%: The correlation between diabetes and heart health isn't novel. Elevated blood sugar levels over extended periods can damage blood vessels, including the coronary arteries.
Age (segmented in quarterlies) – 15%: Age, as an immutable factor, plays a significant role. With age, several bodily systems gradually wear down, rendering individuals more susceptible to a plethora of conditions, IHD included.
Smoking habits – 14%: The deleterious effects of smoking on lung health are well-documented. However, its impact extends to the cardiovascular system, with nicotine and other chemicals adversely affecting heart functions.
MWT1 and MWT2 (indicators of physical endurance) – 13% and 14% respectively: Physical endurance and heart health share an intimate bond. These metrics, gauging one's physical stamina, can be precursors to potential heart-related anomalies.
Redefining Patient Care in the Machine Learning Era
Armed with these insights, healthcare can transcend its conventional boundaries. A deeper understanding of IHD's contributors empowers medical professionals to devise comprehensive care strategies that are both preventive and curative.
Moreover, the revelations from this study underscore the potential for proactive medical interventions. Instead of being reactive, waiting for symptoms to manifest, healthcare providers can now adopt a preventive stance. Patients exhibiting the highlighted risk factors can be placed under more meticulous observation, ensuring that potential IHD developments are nipped in the bud.
With the infusion of machine learning, healthcare is on the cusp of a personalized revolution. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all medical approaches. Historians working on earlier periods have found it more difficult to distinguish between these “drugs” and other kinds of widely used intoxicants that similarly affected the mind and the body. Surely, in the premodern and early modern periods the term “drugs” took on a wider range of meanings than the narrow modern definition. Those included, among other things, medicinal herbs, spices, dyes, incenses, minerals, and even metals.

Tobacco and coffee have been a natural pair in the everyday life of many Muslims since the early modern period. The following observation by the nineteenth-century British Orientalist and lexicographer, Edward William Lane, on Egyptian customs and manners demonstrates this point:
In general, while the master of a family is performing the religious ablution, and saying his prayers, his wife or slave is preparing for him a cup of coffee, and filling his pipe, which she presents to him as soon as he has acquitted himself of his religious duties. Many of the Egyptians take nothing before noon but the cup of coffee and the pipe…. The pipe and the cup of coffee are enjoyed by almost all persons who can afford such luxuries.

The Shiite Iranian and Sunni Ottoman religious establishments also had their share of reservations regarding the two stimulants and the venues in which they were consumed. Firstly, clerical opposition to coffee and coffeehouses involved their association with the Sufis, some of whom were known for their deviant, anti-legalist tendencies, often seen as undermining the normative foundations of Islam.
In Safavid Iran, the Muslim jurists were particularly outraged by the unseemly association of the Sufis of the Qalandariyya with coffeehouses, where they engaged in acts of pederasty and frivolous sexuality. In European eyes, as a contemporary Frenchman complained, these coffeehouses “were veritable houses of sodomy that filled wise and virtuous people with horror.” In the neighboring Ottoman Empire, too, jurists condemned coffeehouses as spaces of trouble and as symptoms of decay.
Ottoman and Iranian religious scholars took particular issue with tobacco because it seemed to them to be more intoxicating than coffee, was an innovation that came from the Christian West, and might even be a Christian conspiracy against Islam. In addition, they claimed that tobacco (and coffee too) was bad for the health and that its consumption eroded the foundation of the Islamic moral order.
How did hashish and opium in the Middle East come to be smoked instead of being eaten? The shift to hashish smoking is perhaps easier to explain, in that tobacco and cannabis are known to be highly complementary, being “smoked together in virtually every culture in which they have taken root”; in other words, “tobacco was a gateway to cannabis experimentation.” A preexisting drug in both Ottoman and Iranian societies, hashish thus appeared to be a natural candidate for smoking after the introduction and diffusion of tobacco in the region. Little wonder that the new habit caught on quickly, though the old custom of ingesting hashish preparations also continued unabated.

I’m writing currently for a character who is functionally blind; his peripheral vision is relatively ok, but focal vision is almost entirely absent. I’ve exaggerated it somewhat for plot purposes but he is canonically going blind in this manner.
This character is also canonically dying of some illness affecting his lungs, among other things; it’s long been an assumption/theory in fandom that it’s cancer, for a myriad of reasons.
I have no practical experience with either, of course (and I hope not to) so I’ve had to devote quiiiiite a bit of research into both experiences; not all of them are one to one comparable for this character but they did make me think of it differently.
In particular, it never really occurred to me just how well the human body can adapt to being blind. It’s true and often said that those who were born sighted often don’t transition as well to being blind, in part because they can depend on other things like seeing eye dogs and modern technology to help them understand their surroundings in a way that’s more intuitive to someone who used to see.
But people have been going blind forever. And relevantly the character I’m writing must hide his lack of vision for his own safety and therefore can depend on no aid. Magic does exist in this universe but it’s only useful for detecting living things.
So I had to put on my historian hat and look through medieval and ancient accounts of blindness and what was done to ensure people could get around. The research was rather interesting.
As goes the cancer, I guess I assumed it would hurt? I’ve broken ribs, and had pneumonia plenty of times, so I am familiar with the agony of every breath making you want to die. But lung cancer is surprisingly invisible; it can sneak up on you, with no pain or obvious symptoms until its stage 3 or 4.
I guess I just always thought it was the sort of cancer you’d inevitably know about early on, but nope. It can be a sneaky sucker.
And nowhere on WebMD does it mention that a very common symptom of lung cancer is sleep disorders. Apparently the lungs produce hormones that help regulate sleep/wake cycles, so cancers of the lungs can cause hypersomnia (most common) or more rarely insomnia. And sometimes that is the only symptom you will have for years; you sleep a lot.
The lungs also generate hormones that stimulate the appetite, interestingly, which means that if a cancer is advanced enough it tends to kill the appetite and cause weight loss thusly. Many cancers cause weight loss because the tissues are ravenous and very demanding of your calories, but lung cancers truly can create a wasting-away effect more pronounced than many others because patients just don’t want to eat.
Anyway, it was a very interesting set of deep dives and I really recommend the above: find people who talk about the experiences because there’s always something that the clinical studies will miss.
I have … a tip.
If you’re writing something that involves an aspect of life that you have not experienced, you obviously have to do research on it. You have to find other examples of it in order to accurately incorporate it into your story realistically.
But don’t just look at professional write ups. Don’t stop at wikepedia or webMD. Look up first person accounts.
I wrote a fic once where a character has frequent seizures. Naturally, I was all over the wikipedia page for seizures, the related pages, other medical websites, etc.
But I also looked at Yahoo asks where people where asking more obscure questions, sometimes asked by people who were experiencing seizures, sometimes answered by people who have had seizures.
I looked to YouTube. Found a few individual videos of people detailing how their seizures usually played out. So found a few channels that were mostly dedicated to displaying the daily habits of someone who was epileptic.
I looked at blogs and articles written by people who have had seizures regularly for as long as they can remember. But I also read the frantic posts from people who were newly diagnosed or had only had one and were worried about another.
When I wrote that fic, I got a comment from someone saying that I had touched upon aspects of movement disorders that they had never seen portrayed in media and that they had found representation in my art that they just never had before. And I think it’s because of the details. The little things.
The wiki page for seizures tells you the technicalities of it all, the terminology. It tells you what can cause them and what the symptoms are. It tells you how to deal with them, how to prevent them.
But it doesn’t tell you how some people with seizures are wary of holding sharp objects or hot liquids. It doesn’t tell you how epileptics feel when they’ve just found out that they’re prone to fits. It doesn’t tell you how their friends and family react to the news.
This applies to any and all writing. And any and all subjects. Disabilities. Sexualities. Ethnicities. Cultures. Professions. Hobbies. Traumas. If you haven’t experienced something first hand, talk to people that have. Listen to people that have. Don’t stop at the scholarly sources. They don’t always have all that you need.
