He had studied the photo again, sitting hunched at the sidecar of Angelina II (“What happened to Angeline I?”; “Nosey as ever.”), eyes tracing his own spikey hair. Suddenly Nicholas calling him “needle-noggin” made so much sense, what with the natural way the syllables rolled off his tongue. “We were close, huh?” Vash spoke then, muscles and bones cramping within the tight space of the sidecar all afternoon as Nicholas tore through the dunes.

Nicholas didn’t say anything for a while that Vash thought he wouldn’t get any answer at all. But the man eventually grunted, “I guess you can say that.”, which was forcibly a vague response for someone who tried to paint himself cryptic – like that wouldn’t further fuel Vash’s inquisitiveness.

Be that as it may, Vash finds it so effortless to fall into step beside Nicholas under countless tumultuous occasions, as if their bodies have long since learned each other’s complementary features. Caught in a crossfire, and they were back-to-back before Vash could even conjure the thought of calling him; tangled into instances of arguments about morale, and it would take one dumb joke for them to be on equal terms; witnessed moments of innocent townsfolk getting assaulted, and suddenly they would work in tandem as they intervened – Nicholas with fists and Vash with words.

And yet, and yet, even with all these incidents further convincing Vash that he and Nicholas make a really good team together, he can’t help but notice the way Nicholas would draw back when things start to cascade into a comfortable pace. Gaze averted whenever he gets caught staring for too long, fingers curled into fists every time Vash moves closer, chin ducked when Vash aims a smile at him.

It had been three weeks since he left Sheryl and Lina’s home when he finally gathered the courage to ask another question. It wasn’t much of a courage to begin with, really, considering Nicholas’ drunk state as he balanced himself on a rickety chair in an inn they’d fought tooth and nail to get. “Why are you scared of me?” Vash had queried through the fog of his buzzing brain, which had seemed to propel Nicholas into a moment of sobriety judging by the abrupt quirk of his left eyebrow.

“W’makes ya think that?” he’d countered in that indolent manner of his, a bearing so laidback it could fool anyone who hadn’t seen him in action.

“It’s in your eyes.”

“Can you walk?” he asks. “We need to go.” He holds out his hand without thinking, falling back on impulse when it comes to Vash of this age.

Vash nods tremulously and grips at his hand like it’s a lifeline and that he’s terrified that Knives might leave without him. He’s never held Knives like this before. It had always been Rem that he had been grasping at. Knives had been a sure thing, always. Vash had never needed to question their orbit around one another.

Knives walks them back the way he came, making sure to steer clear of anyone who would be interested in interfering.

- Excerpt from ‘but your grave was shallow so i carried you home’ by BeesKnees on AO3. Knives attempts to raise an amnesiac, age-regressed Vash, in order to emotionally manipulate him into hating the humans despite how hurting them goes against Vash’s gentle nature.

I’ve been making fanart for this fic because it broke my heart into little pieces and I am in love with the way Knives is characterized. BeesKnees’ Knives is a perfect amalgam of cool decision making and affection for Vash that clashes with his fear and his rage. Hope you will check the fic out and give some kudos to the author.

Truly, nothing scares and overall upsets me more than having to write multi-chaptered fics. I finally managed to break my curse of never having finished one earlier this year and I am gritting my teeth and chanting that I can and will finish the ones hovering in my WIPs as well. One shots is where my heart is at, even when I link them together in long collection.

sometimes it's heaven sent (we kiss, make up on the way) - a Mashwood Pushing Daisies AU by @dingusttmax that has been living in my corner of my heart and my mind. Painful, sweet and hot all at once. Absolute perfection. His through the deep dark forest long aka Mashwood Princess Mononoke AU is also just. SO GOOD. Fuckin' fantastic. Emotional, creative, stunningly described.

blended in measure the Mashwood series by @tardisready is just superb, fantastic, devastating, cleverly plotted and told, stunningly hot. Can't give it enough praise, truly. Also, ace Vash rep!

maybe my heart needs to break to be sure a Mashwood piece that comes with several warnings that absolutely should be heeded, but whew. The emotions, the love in this are absolutely fantastic, devastating and will stay with me for a long time. Forever, I suspect.

"Always" is in the eye of the beholder a VashMeryl piece and insight in Vash's immortality and the lifespan of love versus loved one.

Sister of Bandits by @ladymaliwan a VashMeryl piece about Meryl finding Ericks and Meryl is so delightfully badass in this, just everything about this is so good. I love the expansion of Meryl's arc that feels so natural that the author is making.

Bluebells by @needle-noggins is a VashMeryl fic in progress that has me captivated and not just because I've had the privilege of few sneak peaks of what's to come. Dealing with Meryl's very reasonable trauma after well... Everything. And navigating a life in the after. Which is a theme that I absolutely love to see explored.

From what I have lovingly deemed Demi fic - a VashMeryl post Trimax piece.

“I thought you had died.” 

I almost did. Everyone else has. 

But it’s not true - she is here, hugging him so tight it almost hurts. So he does not say that, does not say anything at all, just holds her in return. Her shoulders tremble softly, because there's few things he's as good at as making her cry, it seems.

Vash doesn't count minutes holding her (comforting her, comforting himself), lets the few stray stares drip off of him, them, until Meryl is ready to pull away a little and look him in the face properly. There is an instant urge to turn his head away, duck out of her gaze, as if she could read all his recent failures in his features.

He doesn't, because he didn't come here to run away again. At least not the moment they've met. (He is tired of running. He is more scared of staying.)

OKAY EP 12 THOUGHTS

vash's hair journey was just me going "oh no" in two opposite directions. probably mostly shock but. hm.

"vash what product do you use your hair spikes are indestructible" "oh, it's the trauma"

zazie freaking out over the takeover but spending time in the middle of running away to rag on wolfwood for only having one body like a loser. also coming back to be like "why do u all hate vash so much it makes no sense" and troll meryl.

vash's life plan is about seven layers of "oh baby no" and "what else are you going to do when you're a pacifist nuclear warhead" and then some more shades of "oh baby no"

the big fight. like yes visually very cool and epic and i need to go back and watch it seven times but also unparalleled brother wrestling energy. vash bites. nai hears vash's huge ideology in the middle of their final crash and the only reaction he can muster is "150 years and this is the BEST you can come up with?????" almost verbatim. calls vash stupid.

the way they threaten meryl with sending her to the insurance agency is SENDING me. not "stop it or you're going to get fired." apparently this happens enough that their go-to solution is sending bad and naughty journalists. to insurance. why. who came up with that. what does it mean. fucking hilarious. was roberto drinking to cope with how he has to ride the line between his ethics and the rules of the gossip mag to avoid being sent to insurance.

the fights in this show have been driving me insane and vash vs knife tentacles was NO different. incredible. for some reason vash's reloading always catches my eye - the moment where he takes knives out for a moment, stands stock-still reloading and then immediately jumps into running frantically away was a really fun sequence. also first appearance of his fancy little reloading gadget!

the focus on the "one winged angel" made me chuckle but it's very cool and i like it a lot

okay this was a lighthearted post mostly but vash playing the piano. amnesiac and near comatose, playing two notes over and over again. i may not recover.

Vash hadn't really wanted to show these off to her, nor had he wanted to before July, but there was no way around it this time and she was too insistent to fend off or convince that he'd be ok. So, here he sat with all his scars on full display some looking newer than others.

"I think I remember Wolfwood saying something similar he asked me if this was the price I paid for trying to save everyone... and it is." Vash smiled softly his gaze on the ground. "Some of these are actually from people I trusted, people that tried to stab me in the back for the money." Some of them still ached but a lot of them didn't really cause him too much problems anymore.

the moment vash hears that shrike has woken up he is already in the room. he wonders if it would be alright to hug the other... it should be fine. they had been friends for years and if shrike managed to remain his friend even after the incident at jeneora rock then letting down his guard once would be fine, right?

he starts to smile when he sees shrike, lips part to speak and he wants to hurry over but shrike's next word bring him to an abrupt halt. 'who are you?' his eyes widen in shock but otherwise he keeps his expressions under control. so shrike lost his memories... vash hesitates for just a moment before smiling gently.

"just a traveler, I found you and brought you to the doctors here." vash pulls a chair closer and sits down. "though i know a little bit about you, I came by your hometown once or twice" far more often than that but he does not say that.

"I know that your name is shrike and that you lived at jeneora rock. you were the teacher there" and your eyes shone the brightest when you took care of the little ones. you always had a soft spot for those rascals and you always scolded me alongside them when we got into trouble. and yet you never chased me away but let me stay close. "I believe you lived together with the tavern keeper and her son." he makes a thoughtful hum and acts like he is trying to remember something "I think their names were rosa and tonis" as if he could forget.

"sorry I don't know more than that" also a lie, he knows far more than that but he has made his choice. this could be a good new start for shrike with no ties to vash he could live a peaceful life - a safe life -. "oh wait no" he suddenly grins "I think, some people called you shrimp as a nickname but I might be wrong."
