Ancient Arkesini
For today’s hike, we chose a loop trail that included Ancient Arkesini, near the village of Vroutsis. In Arkesini, a settlement was built in an Acropolis around 90 BC which lasted until the inhabitants were chased out by pirates in Medieval times. The tower on the Acropolis is considered the best preserved in the Cyclades.
The loop trail seemed like a good idea until it wasn’t. The first half, from the trailhead to the Acropolis was beautiful: a well maintained trail with spectacular views. We never did find the second half of the loop. Instead we scrambled over goat paths for an hour or so before giving up and rejoining the original path. But, the views were worth every bramble scratch!
The trail passed a modern church on the way to the Acropolis which clings to an outcrop into the Aegean.
The “relatively modern” church
The Acropolis.
The current inhabitants are goats….
…and there are a lot of them!
Winding a path through the ruins.
The view from the top.
After we made it back to the village of Vroutsis, we had a great lunch in a charming taverna. Then we headed to the beach.
We drove six minutes from Vroutsis, down a winding road (all the roads are winding) to a small parking lot at the top of a cliff. There was a sign for Ammoudi Beach but the beach was not visible from the parking lot. There was a path down and we took it.
Half way down, the beach came into view.
And it was a beautiful beach. It was rocky, but with crystal clear water. We shared it with only four other people. Heavenly.

1. Sunset Spots: Capturing Santorini’s Iconic Glow
No trip to Santorini is complete without watching its famous sunset. Here are the best locations to experience this magical moment:
Oia
Perhaps the most iconic spot to watch the sunset, Oia is known for its cliffside whitewashed houses and windmills. As the sun sets over the caldera, the sky turns shades of pink, orange, and gold, casting a magical glow over the village. Get there early to secure a good spot, as it can get crowded during peak season.
Tip: Book your stay in Oia with Trip.com to wake up to the island’s most beautiful views.
Imerovigli
For a quieter but equally spectacular sunset experience, head to Imerovigli. This village is located at the highest point of the caldera, offering unobstructed views of the sunset. Skaros Rock, a massive rock formation, provides an epic backdrop for photos.
Akrotiri Lighthouse
If you're looking to escape the crowds, head to Akrotiri Lighthouse. Located at the southwestern tip of the island, this spot offers a peaceful and less touristy sunset experience. The lighthouse itself adds a touch of charm to the setting.
Fira
The capital of Santorini, Fira, also offers some excellent sunset views. Head to a cliffside café or restaurant and enjoy the sunset with a refreshing cocktail or a glass of local wine.
2. Food: A Culinary Journey Through Santorini
Greek cuisine is known for its fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and rich history. Santorini offers a mix of traditional Greek dishes and unique local specialties. Here are some must-try dishes and the best places to eat on the island:
Santorini’s Local Specialties
Tomatokeftedes: These are tomato fritters made from the island’s flavorful tomatoes and herbs. They are crispy, light, and full of flavor.
Fava: A smooth purée made from yellow split peas, fava is a quintessential dish of Santorini. It's often served with olive oil, onions, and lemon juice.
Chlorotyri: A soft, tangy cheese made from goat’s milk, this local delicacy is perfect for salads and savory pies.
Seafood: Being an island, Santorini is home to some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste. Look out for grilled octopus, squid, and the catch of the day.
Best Restaurants in Santorini
Ammoudi Fish Tavern (Oia): Nestled in the tiny harbor below Oia, Ammoudi Fish Tavern is renowned for its fresh seafood. You can enjoy your meal right by the water while watching the sunset.
Metaxi Mas (Exo Gonia): A hidden gem located in the village of Exo Gonia, Metaxi Mas is a traditional Greek tavern offering hearty local dishes with a modern twist. Their fava and tomato fritters are a must-try.
Naoussa (Fira): This charming restaurant offers excellent views of the caldera and serves delicious Greek cuisine, including fresh seafood and local wines.
Make reservations at these top spots via Trip.com for a seamless dining experience during your stay in Santorini.
3. Fun Activities: Discovering the Best of Santorini
Santorini offers more than just stunning sunsets and delicious food. The island is brimming with activities that cater to all types of travelers. Whether you're an adventurer, a history buff, or simply looking to relax, Santorini has something for everyone.
Explore Ancient Akrotiri
If you're a history enthusiast, Akrotiri is a must-visit. Often referred to as the "Pompeii of the Aegean," this ancient settlement was buried under volcanic ash thousands of years ago and is remarkably well-preserved. Wander through the streets and see buildings, pottery, and frescoes from the Minoan civilization.
Hike from Fira to Oia
For those who love the outdoors, the hike from Fira to Oia offers some of the most stunning views on the island. This 10-kilometer trek takes you along the caldera’s edge, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, the volcano, and neighboring islands. The hike takes about 3-4 hours and is best done in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
Wine Tasting at Local Wineries
Santorini is famous for its unique volcanic wines, particularly its Assyrtiko grapes. Take a wine-tasting tour at one of the island’s many wineries, such as Santo Wines or Domaine Sigalas, and sample the crisp white wines that are grown in Santorini’s volcanic soil.
Relax on Santorini’s Beaches
Santorini’s beaches are unlike any other in the world due to the island’s volcanic history. The Red Beach, located near Akrotiri, is surrounded by dramatic red cliffs and is perfect for a day of swimming and sunbathing. Alternatively, head to Kamari or Perissa, both of which offer long stretches of black sand.
Sail Around the Caldera
One of the best ways to see Santorini is from the water. Book a boat tour that takes you around the caldera, with stops at the hot springs, volcanic islands, and secluded beaches. Many tours offer sunset cruises, providing a unique perspective of the island’s famous sunset.
You can easily find and book boat tours and other activities through Trip.com, ensuring you get the best deals and experiences.
4. Where to Stay: The Best Accommodation in Santorini
Santorini offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses. Whether you're looking for a cliffside villa with a private pool or a cozy hotel near the beach, Santorini has it all.
Oia: For luxury and romance, Oia is the place to stay. Hotels like Canaves Oia Suites offer world-class service and breathtaking views of the caldera. Book your stay through Trip.com for exclusive deals.

Crete pt. 1
Rethymno
Our hotel was a converted Hamam (Turkish bath) in the historical part of the city.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge
A short walk down to springs with a waterfall that you have to swim to get to. Lots of people hiked to the springs but very few actually swam through the freezing water to the waterfall.
Drymiskiano Ammoudi beach
This is a small beach adjacent to the Preveli Beach, but because it's less well known it was way more chill. Also it's the start of an alternative hike to Preveli (the regular hike is 30 min down a large number of stairs)
Preveli Palm Forest and Preveli Beach
A touristy beach that is known for being the mouth of a freshwater river surrounded by natural palms.
Chania
Major city with large historical district in western Crete. Our home base for most of our time in Crete.
Samaria Gorge
Agia Roumeli
Small town at the base of Sougia Gorge.
Springs of Argyroupolis
Man-made multi-tier springs flow through some cafes and tavernas.

Greece 🇬🇷
Day 1 - Crete
Stayed in Chania near the port, it is so calm and beautiful in the mornings before things open up. Well worth a walk around in the mornings but don't expect restaurants to open until ~10.
Drove to Elafonisi Beach - the water was so gorgeous and blue. It is famous for pink sand but the sand wasn't that pink in real life. Still so worth a visit. We swam so much, make sure to walk all around including past to the other side of the sand dunes. We had an amazing dinner at Taverna Stomio on the way back, it had such a cute outdoor area with animals in the courtyard. The food was so fresh and it was clearly family run. Of course they followed customs with a shot of ouzzo after dinner and they brought lots of complimentary watermelon for dessert before we left.
Some good places in Chania that I researched: Bohéme (bar), Pallas (good rooftop fancy restaurant), Tamam (restaurant), Pulse vegan, Adespoto Music Taverna, The Well of the Turk, Salis, Chrisostomos, The Five Restaurant, Matzénta kuzina del sol, Maiami, Thalassino Ageri
Day 2 - Crete
Spent the day at Falassarna Beach - felt like more of a local vibe. Gorgeous clear water with stunning views of surrounding rock formations. Then spent the evening enjoying Chania including shopping at the markets and leather stores, walking around the water/old venetian port, getting drinks at Bohéme (cute garden bar), and enjoying a really nice dinner at Pallas on the rooftop.
Day 3 - Crete
Samaria Gorge hike! This was a doozy. We woke very early to start our hike when the park opened around 8AM. Very steep steps down for the first 1.5-2 hrs. About 1/2 way through the hike once in the gorge my mom fell twisting her ankle, which ended up being broken. The only options are hiking your way out or getting donkey to carry you out; they go twice a day. She ended up hiking her way out another 5 miles! Then we ended the hike at a very nice black sand beach Agia Roumeli with super blue water. Logistically pretty hard to coordinate because you need to reserve a ferry from the end of the hike (Agia Roumeli) to another town (Sougia) where you can catch a KTEL bus (from Sougia-Omalos) to the start of the hike and then we drove back in the dark which was treacherous because there were so many goats sitting in the road without any lights! A very crazy day. The gorge itself was nice, but we learned after the fact that people get very hurt there and someone ended up needing their leg amputated due to a rock slide crush injury. You should book tickets on the ferry and bus ahead of time because you don't want to be stranded!
Day 4 - Crete
We spent this day driving from Chania to Heraklion with a stop in Rethimno along the way. Could've spent more time exploring Rethimno, especially the Venetian Fortezza Castle! However, in terms of the old town and vibe I preferred Chania, Rethimno felt too touristy. There was a cute Rimondi Fountain there and a nice Neratze Mosque. Once in Heraklion we went to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum where they had the famous cuneiform tablet. We had a great dinner at Ippokampos near the water in town (Kastella next door also looked good).
Day 5 - Santorini
Caught a morning ferry from Heraklion to Santorini which took ~2h. Then got dropped off at our lodging in Fira. We walked around Fira a bit and then caught a bus to Oia where we walked some more, had a nice lunch and cocktail and caught a gorgeous sunset. Beware, people start lining up for sunset 2-3h early in Oia and the streets are mobbed.
Day 6 - Santorini
Had an absolutely perfect day in Santorini starting with the Fira to Oia walk which took a few hours and had gorgeous views throughout. Then we ended in Ammoudi Bay at Ammoudi Fish Tavern where we had a very fancy fish lunch where you pick out your whole fish and they cook it for you. Very much for the experience. This is the bay in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants where Lena draws and jumps in and also gets caught on the wire in the sea. I loved every second of it!! Then we took a donkey up the stairs - they call it Santorini Ferrari! Then we caught a bus back to Fira and enjoyed sunset on our balcony that had a great caldera view and a restaurant nearby with live music that floated up to us during the experience. There truly is no bad view in Santorini. However, the crowds and prices in Santorini are insane. There are cruise ships that dump hundreds of people every day who mob the streets.
Day 7 - Santorini
Woke up to see the sunrise from our balcony - sooooo nice! Then had some breakfast and coffee at Volkan on the Rocks which had a nice view and plays Mamma Mia nightly at their outdoor theater which I totally would've done if I knew! and want to the port to catch our ferry to Milos. unfortunately, the seas were very rough and our ferry was delayed by >3hr and was almost canceled. Thankfully we made it on but the seas were very rough. Ate at Nostos Seafood Experience
Day 8 - Milos
Wanted to go on a boat trip to Kleftiko to see the most amazing rock formations and swim in the bright blue water. However, the water was predicted to be very rough and after the ferry journey the night before we decided to forgo this trip. There is a hiking option there but my mom's ankle hindered us from doing that, we also heard there are venomous snakes on that hike. So we went to Venus de Milo (statue of aphrodite of Milos) and then walked around Klima at the bottom which was colorful and cute. Then we went to Sarakiniko beach which felt like we were on the moon!! It was so cool. Hard to hike up to the top parts though without sneakers. It was also super windy - I wished it was calmer so I could do some cliff jumping. Then we went to Firiplaka Beach which was so gorgeous and shallow with nice waves and red rock backdrop. Then we went to watch sunset in Plaka - the best place to view sunset is from is the back balcony of Church of Panagia Korfiatissa. Then we went to dinner at O! Hamos! which was one of the most memorable dinners. It was clearly family run and everything was very fresh. They gave a really nice submarine dessert at the end which was so cool, like a sweet taffy-like thing submerged in a cup of water.
We stayed at Santa Maria Village Resort & Spa and really liked it - had a great breakfast spread
Day 9 - Milos
Woke up and went to Firopotamos with very cool ruins of a doorway and super clear blue water. Then we went to Mandrakia where we could walk on the little boat ports that individual families have. Then we went to Paleochori Beach which was nice to swim in but got deep pretty fast and had bigger pebbles, but the sand had underground hot spring pockets which was such a cool natural feature. Then we had to catch a ferry to Athens. Once we got to Athens we had dinner at ***.
Day 10 - Athens
Spent the morning walking around the Plaka neighborhood and around the Acropolis. We didn't enter the Acropolis since there was so much construction but went to a lookout with the view of the main columns in the back. We also walked around the outside of Hadrian's Library. Could definitely spend more time exploring the ruins of Athens and more neighborhoods. Then headed to the airport.
Tips:
You MUST stay on the Caldera side when visiting Satorini
Bring zofran or motion sickness medicine if choosing the ferry option between islands. Beware of rough seas and cancellations/delays, allow extra time in your itinerary for logistic changes and consider flying instead but know that all flights between islands stop in athens which is so inconvenient
In Santorini it would be fun to go to an outdoor movie at Volkan on the Rocks at night!
Definitely go to O! Hamos! in Milos, there will def be a wait in the summer months but it is worth it for sure
Would have tried to go to some other famous Crete beaches such as Paralias Plaka,

Stars Aligning in Santorini
I got off the bus in Perissa and Stacey was at the bus stop, ready to meet me. We hit the beach in Perissa, grabbing a drink and scoring ourselves a complimentary beach chair. Stacey was yet to hear any news from the airline about her bag, however, her tile tracker had come back online and she had seen her bag was at Istanbul airport earlier in the day. As we were sitting enjoying our drinks by the sea, our accommodation in Oia messaged me on booking.com and said the airline had been in touch about the bags.
We decided it was time to check in to our accommodation in Oia, so we jumped on the bus back to Fira to then get on the bus to Oia. While on the bus, Stacey connected to the internet and got an email from the airline carrier saying her bag was indeed ready to be collected from the airline desk at Santorini airport! Great success. We got up to Oia, dumped my bag, and headed back to Fira, where I got off to scope for a dinner spot while Stace went on the airport bus to grab her bag and meet our third star who was arriving on the next flight from London - Sophie Rose Andrews.
I killed some time while the other two got their shit sorted out, and before I knew it, Stace and Sophie were getting off the bus to meet me and the stars were all aligning at the bus depot in Fira - we had all made it.
We had a traditional gyros mixed grill for dinner, Soph and Stace's introduction to meat and chips for tea. After dinner we jumped on the bus back to the outskirts of Oia and made ourselves at home in our accom. Bags dumped and raring to explore, we went into Oia and caught some of the sunset.
The next morning, we woke up early and headed into Oia for a coffee. We ended up finding a delightful coffee spot overlooking the caldera, which was our local for the whole two mornings we were in Santorini. Post coffee, we grabbed our togs and hit the beach in Perissa, a beach side town on the other end of the island. The bus system is pretty good here, despite it being a bit like organised chaos, and we found getting around to be fairly straightforward. Perissa was lovely, we found a great spot on loungers by the beach where we ordered some drinks and had swims at our leisure. This was LIVING. We stayed at the beach until it was time to eat something, so we bused back to Fira, grabbed some snacks and headed back to Oia. The afternoon rolled around and it was time for another swim. We walked through Oia town and down the steep stairs to Ammoudi Bay, where we had another dip. It was lovely but quite busy compared to what we had been used to. We thought we might have dinner at a fish tavern down there, but upon seeing the prices we thought we might have a gelato and find somewhere a bit more in our budget. We had to slog our way up 278 stairs to the top in the heat. HOT TO TROT MAN! We were at this point pretty pooped and hangry, so we grabbed some gyros to go and took them back for a sunset picnic at our accomodation. Delightful. Next morning was more of the same, a coffee in Oia, mooching and reading books by the pool, a snack lunch and then dinner at the most gorgeous Greek Taverna.
An early night for us as we had a shuttle in the morning to head to the ferry, as we were off to Folegandros.

14 Common mistakes to avoid while you're in Santorini, Greece
Are you finally making plans to visit Santorini? I believe Santorini to be the most gorgeous destination on earth. For good reason, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece, following closely behind Athens.
No amount of daydreaming can completely prepare you for the breathtaking beauty and enchantment this little island inspires. It is absolutely worth visiting the island to see the white-washed cube cottages and stunning sunsets over the azure waters of the Aegean Sea.
This article was written to assist you to steer clear of frequent mistakes that tourists make so that your trip to Santorini will go smoothly.
Traveling during prime time
In Santorini, July and August are the busiest months. Millions of tourists decide to travel to the country's islands at this time of year because of the warm and bright weather. Naturally, the cost of travel and lodging increases, which is another reason to avoid the high season.
It is best to travel to Santorini between April and mid-June or between September and October.
Purchasing expensive ferry tickets
To receive the greatest deals and most flexible timetables, making reservations in advance is essential.
The cheapest tickets from Athens cost between $45 and $58; the trip lasts between seven and nine hours. So that you can get a seat, purchase these tickets in advance as they frequently sell out.
Travel to Santorini to party
Santorini is not the island for you if you're seeking to party. Just be aware that dinner reservations and some live music are more in line with the island's ambiance rather than completely skipping it.
You only need two days in Santorini before moving on to Mykonos or another of the well-known party islands.
While visiting Santorini, you can rent an ATV and explore more secluded areas or go on a boat tour to enjoy the Caldera's beauty and enjoyment. If you enjoy wine, Santorini offers some fantastic wine excursions!
Mixing up the ports in Santorini
The main entrance to Santorini is at Athinios Port. Athinios and the Old Port are Santorini's two principal ports. Athinios Port is the arrival point for passenger ships from neighboring Cycladic islands and the Greek mainland.
The distance between the harbor and Fira, the island's capital, is around five kilometers. You'll arrive at this port if you're taking a ferry to Santorini. Only cruise ships and tour boats use the Santorini Old Port in Fira.
Ammoudi, near the community of Oia, and Gialos, located immediately below the town of Fira, are two additional smaller ports on Santorini.
Only cruise boats, ferries to the nearby island of Thirassia, and local fishermen utilize the Ammoudi port. Few cruise ships and excursion boats use Gialos to reach the volcano crater on the island of Nea Kameni.
Save the donkey!
The Santorini donkeys are a well-known symbol of the island. As these animals toil in the blazing sun, there is sometimes a lot of concern about mistreatment. If you decide to ride one, make sure you are satisfied with how they treat you. And if you decide not to judge people, don't.
Taking a trip during peak hours
The majority of tourists leave Santorini for their next location sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., as this is when they usually explore the islands that are close by.
Avoid these hours, especially in the summer. However, if you choose to travel in the early morning, be sure to pre-arrange a private shuttle to transport you to your hotel.
Underestimating the volume of traffic
You should arrive at the port well in advance of your departure time merely to be safe due to Santorini's constrained transportation alternatives and small roads.
Consider arriving at the port at least 90 minutes beforehand. From Fira, Akrotiri, or Santorini International Airport, it takes about 20 minutes to get to Athinios Port. From Imerovigli, it takes about 25 minutes, and from Oia, it takes about 45 minutes.
You will need to provide enough time to print your ticket at the ticket collection station unless your ferry operator accepts e-tickets.
Remain in Oia
There is significantly more to the island than Oia, despite it being the most well-known and possibly the most romantic. After spending some time relaxing, rent an ATV or use public transportation to explore more of the island.
There is much more to the island than just staring at the cliffs and the ocean below, whether it be the black sand beaches, smaller settlements, or visiting a winery!
Avoid flushing toilet paper
This is an uncomfortable subject, but please adhere to the written instructions posted in your accommodation. Let's not make things too complicated, will we?
No one, wants feces-filled water spilling into their bedroom. Don't try to use tricks; something unpleasant would definitely happen. Use the trash can near the bathroom's toilet to dispose of used paper.
Boarding an abandoned ferry
You'd be amazed how many times this happened. It most times results from wrong planning. So this planning blunder isn't the end of the world after all. But be sure to reserve the appropriate ferry if you've always wanted to arrive on an open ferry and view Santorini from the island's base.
Not planning ahead for your transport
Santorini may be a stunning destination, but along with that beauty comes a huge flood of daily tourists. Nothing may make you more anxious than being surrounded by masses of people and having no idea what to do or where to go. Make sure to factor transportation into your vacation budget if you're traveling to the island.
Verify your reservation
Wherever you are, you must go to your accommodations and verify that everything you booked is in place, whether you travel by ferry or by air. If you schedule a hotel transport in advance and let them know when you plan to arrive, they will have a car waiting for you. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of the sporadic buses or the exorbitant cab fares.
Taking a cruise ship to Santorini for your vacation
Thousands of tourists pour into the Fira cliffs when the cruise ships stop nearby; yet, the narrow, winding trails were intended for tiny vehicles, not thousands of visitors.
It can be a hassle when thousands of people are shuffling against you as you walk along the tiny path. Because of how rowdy this experience is, most travelers flood merchandise shops for souvenirs or donkeys to recall their experience in Santorini.
But at the end of the day, the shops become just as crowded as the tiny path because of the number of travelers pouring into its modest space.
You require more than the single day that a cruise delivers if you truly want to explore Santorini. When visiting Santorini, go away from the tourist trail.
Ignore the Beaches
The beaches in Santorini are not what draws tourists there. However, that does not imply that you should skip them. Consider setting aside some time to take in the vistas of the black sand or black rock beaches on the island of Santorini.
Yes, the beaches on other Greek islands are prettier, but that does not imply you should disregard Santorini beaches when making travel plans to Santorini. It is worthwhile to visit Kamari Beach (the black rock beach in Santorini) and Monolithos Beach.
Now you are well informed and I believe you will have a great time traveling to Santorini, Greece. Enjoy every minute of your vacation!
