GARRETT A. MORGAN
(4 Mar. 1877 [sometimes given as 1879]-27 July 1963), was an important inventor and businessman active in the affairs of Cleveland's black community. Among his most notable inventions were an early gas mask and a traffic light. Born in Paris, Ky., to Sydney and Eliza Reed, both former enslaved people, Morgan received 6 years of education before leaving home at age 14 for Cincinnati where he worked and hired a tutor to continue his education. He has long been believed to be the grandson of Confederate John Hunt Morgan, though there are no historical documents to prove this assertion, and census data makes it unlikely. He came to Cleveland on 17 June 1895. After various positions as a sewing-machine adjuster for clothing manufacturers, Morgan went into business for himself in 1907, establishing a shop on W. 6th St. to repair and sell sewing machines. In 1909 he opened a tailoring shop; with 32 employees, he manufactured suits, dresses, and coats. In 1913 he organized the G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Co. to market a hair-straightening solution he had discovered by accident in 1905. This company soon offered a complete line of hair-care products.
Morgan invented a safety helmet to protect the wearer from smoke and ammonia, introducing his "Breathing Device" in 1912, patenting it in 1914, and using it to descend into the gas-filled tunnel beneath Lake Erie to rescue workers and retrieve bodies after the Cleveland Waterworks explosion (see WATERWORKS TUNNEL DISASTERS) on 25 July 1916. Morgan established the Natl. Safety Device Co. in 1914. Morgan's other major invention, a traffic light (1923), was important in that it used a third, cautionary signal between "stop" and "go." Morgan sold his traffic light to General Electric Co. for $40,000 in 1923.
Morgan in 1920 founded the Cleveland Call, a weekly newspaper, and in 1908 helped found the CLEVELAND ASSOC. OF COLORED MEN.

It’s awful.
Yeah. I said it.
Late 70’s Chinese factory acrylic “painting” - stretched on warped 1/2” x 2” wood strips which have no bevel, no keys, and have twisted so badly they are splintered at the joins. The gallery wrap (the staples are along the back of the stretcher bars rather than at the sides) have allowed the heavy, unprimed canvas to buckle badly in all directions.
The adage of - it takes twice as much time and twice as much work, to do a half-assed job on something that was never any good in the first place….
There was no help for it, I had to pry out all the rusted staples to remove the painting - and assess whatever the hell I’m supposed to do with those bars. Ended up drilling all four corners and adding long screws in an attempt to repair the warp and secure the basic structure of the support. Sure, it’s sturdier, but the warp is the warp and nothing can be done to change that, short of ordering custom bars for a manufacturer.

I sanded down some of the spots where the wood twisted up and would continue to show on the painting’s face. Cut strips of 4-ply matboard and ATG’d them to the outer edge of the stretcher to allow at least a nod to keeping the canvas from resting against the flat wooden strips which make up the supports. I had to staple into the sides instead of replacing the gallery wrap - it simply would NEVER flatten out otherwise. I got a decent pull - although the warped stretcher is noticeably wonky.
Cleaning off the yellow nicotine fog? Removing the top coating (IS it varnish? Or some sort of yellowed gel-medium which was mixed into the paint?) there are many cracks which run across the surface of the painting, thick, gloppy wads which have split over time. Diluted ammonia did NOTHING. White spirits? Nah..Meths? Nope. Acetone gave a nod to cleaning the surface ever so slightly - but it wasn’t until I poured a couple spoonfuls of Sal Soda into my ammonia and went at the crud with a brush - did it finally relent.
Touched up some of the worst splits with warm gesso - and will do a bit of in-painting tomorrow.
This piece was brought to me by the good lady who has given me several other paintings to restore. It does NOT belong to her, but to an elderly neighbor? I want to keep her happy at all costs - so this damn thing will have to receive all the care I usually put into stuff that’s actually got some artistic value.
It’s hard to not judge, or be resentful - it’s such a piece of useless crap - but somebody likes it, and it will be returned looking a bit better.

There have been at least 36 attacks on fossil fuel infrastructure, 29 attacks on electricity stations, 7 attacks on water supplies, and 6 attacks on nuclear facilities, Ecoaction has noted.

Each day brings new reports of the Russian military destroying Ukraine’s environment with thermobaric bombs and other powerful weapons. Some cities, like Mariupol, have become so heavily bombarded that they are now unlivable, due to both a lack of infrastructure and extreme toxicity in the environment.
Wildlife refuges are being targeted and zoos have been attacked. Zasiadko said that 44% of the country’s most vulnerable environmental areas are in active war zones, with bombs causing significant harm to various ecosystems.
Russia is also targeting the country’s food sector, destroying agricultural equipment and warehouses.
