Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184: My Chaos War, Last opponents -Capella.
(By Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184)
My Chaos War, Last opponents -Capella.
After the extended fighting vs the Rigel Rangers, we were short on everything.
Replacement pilots, spare parts, ammo, repair facilities, -er well make that any kind of facilities, including somewhere to eat and sleep.
All of this could be gotten, given enough cash and time.
But time was the one commodity we were critically short of. The last fight would start in scant eight hours, and official word on whom we would face had not arrived yet.
The first order of business was to get some calories into the crew, and some soggy emergency rations were found.
They were to exhausted to complain, or even notice the (lack of) flavor, and just mechanically chomped them down.
Some armor plating were rigged to provide rudimentary shelters for the ground crew, the pilots slept in their Mechs.
A couple hours before the last battle were to start, we finally found out we would face the Capellans,
The crew were wakened, and blearyeyed they set out to arrange the supplies we had recieved during the night, and get the new Mechbay operational.
Some effort of putting together formations to face the Capellan specialists were also undertaken, but again, we were short on time, and by now it was running out.
---
This time we went on an early offensive.
Darryl and lokki attacked at dawn and threw the Capellans into confusion. The strikes were well planned, and the stunned Capellans were slow to respond.
Only Roberts managed to activate his Mechs and start hitting back, and our forces withdrew in good order after raking up a positive score.
12-4 to us.
David went over to see if he could improve on our score, but the brief lull had given the Capellans time to get organized. While he hit some targets, Roberts, now reinforced by Toenjes, launched a strong counterattack on our flank. David was recalled to drive them back, but their offensive had nullified our earlier gains.
17-17
Then things really started going south on us.
Brainstorm showed up and launched some critical strikes, while Pauls attack run ran into ambush after ambush. lokki and Steven were sent to get him out of the trap, something they managed after getting somewhat mauled as well.
29-17 to them.
Our next offensive wave consisted of Michael, Darryl and John. Their success was mixed, and the Capellans sent a punitive expedition consisting of Spitznet, Alligood and Roberts to force their withdrawal.
41-27 to them.
David and Michael were chomping at the bit to do some more hammering, and talked me into coming along to see if I could tag a target or two. We managed to keep the attention firmly on their own defence, except for a few sorties by Cyrus. At the end of the run, the situation did no longer look hopeless for us. A few more good pushes and the victory would be decided.
45-44 to them.
And those pushes came.
Unfortunately, Cyrus` strikes had not only blown up our main ammobunker, he had also started a fire in the POL storage, that soon spread to engulf the repair facilities as well.
With the Mechs reduced to scrap, and no way to get them repaired and no ammo besides what we had in the onboard magazines we had no way of resisting the Capellan onslaught.
Cyrus pointed them to our most vulnerable spots, letting Shadowmist, Spitznet and Jackson do the majority of the trashing. My valiant crew managed to halt them briefly a couple times, but the result was inevitable.
69-46 to them.
Well, that is the breaks in this business. Sometimes you face an opponent that just is better, and the Capellans earned their win the hard way.

Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184: Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat #1092
(By Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184)
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat #1092
Brought to you by ANN
Highlighting the November 3351 Nifty Chrono
Just after the end of the Selfsame event, the Gaming authorities announced the upcoming competition:
-A Nifty Chrono.
As usual when we have a Mech specific event, the lower tops had different rules than the rest of us.
On the two lowest tops there were no restrictions whatsoever, if you could get a Mech into the formation it was accepted.
On the nine highest tops however, only the 40 ton Nifthel would be legal, not even a sidekick or two was allowed.
For me that was no problem at all. My first really succesfull formation, the 40 ton Snoozers had once upon a time consisted of only Nifthels, and I still have four dozens of them.
So I signed up immediately, and returned to the compound to give my Nifthel pilots the good news that their services would once again be needed.
That was when events started to go horribly wrong.
When one of the Star Leaguers return after winning one of the KotM events, there is usually a crowd waiting.
Champagne is popped and the winner sprayed, and a big party (paid for by the winner) is held.
As my forces had been unable to secure the win, no such ceremony was expected, but upon arrival at my quarters a crowd had gathered.
In place of the champagne shower, I was hit by bucketfulls of salt, icy water. Shockingly enough by itself, but the live wire nearby made it a hair-raising experience.
As I stood stunned in place, the group of officers who had recently been convinced to help battle the paperworkmonster appeared.
As to avoid unpleasant discharges and damage to equipment, they quickly relieved me of my sidearm, locator, tools and comunicator. Then they frogmarched me to ammobunker 32.
It had been emptied of all ordenance a week ago in preparation for installment of some advanced firefighting equipment, and was supposed to be empty.
But there was a desk and a chair there, as well as hundreds of crates of paperwork. I was unceremonelly dropped in the chair, and was told they would let me out, maybe, when this batch was done.
After they had left, there was not much to do except dig in at the work. Those bunkers are almost unbreachable even by Advanced mecha weaponry, and the comunication devices had been removed as well.
All that was left was a camera, no doubt recently installed by the cabal who had brought me here to keep track of my progress.
Those Bunkers are as mentioned pretty secure. they are also made for maintaining ammunition in peak condition. In other Words, regular temperature (12 degrees Celsius) and 40% humidity.
I quickly stripped, and wrung most of the water out of my clothing, then put it back on. Sitting naked at the desk would surely lead to hypothermia, but if my body heat was trapped inside the coveralls I might stay warm enough to be functional.
After four hours or so, as the still wet clothing had stolen enough body heat, my fingers grew to numb to hold the stylus any longer. I got up and did some PT, but my strenght were flagging. I managed to work up a decent sweat before exhaustion forced me back to the chair, but that sweat soon cooled and helped drain my bodyheat away
Unable to keep awake, I drifted off into unconsciousness.
And woke up shivering and sweating as rough hands swayed me back and forth, slapped my cheeks and pinched me everywhere.
Rescue had arrived in the persons of my Nifthel pilots.
As they had heard of the event being held, and not been called up, they had launched a base wide search for me. If I was trying to refuse them their shot at glory, they would find me and force me to the mountain.
Semiconcious, I was dragged to the hangar, and one of the pilots entered the Cockpit along with me to make sure we went to the arena.
As we arrived, the force that had been left to hold a spot had been pushed to the foothills, but a couple quick strikes saw us on the top.
Art which point the A.I. measuring my Health (among other things) sent a distress signal.
Normally such a distress signal is sent to the units C.O. but as this was the C.O. it got routed to the nearest friendly Commander, in this case our chief medico; Jorge.
He rushed to my side, and over the protests of my crew had me shipped back to the infirmary immediately to battle the developing pnumonia.
Our top boss, Tony, came to see how I fared, and wondered how I had come to such a state.
I truthfully told him (not the whole truth) it was working on the paperwork, and getting all sweaty doing it.
As to his concern about how it was to be done now, I told him of those officers who recently had pitched in, and how well they had done. (Some merit badges were even suggested)
He brightened up, and said such officers surely belonged to staff, and went to tell them of their promotion and new duties.
The treatment worked, and soon the need to do somthing got me out of bed. A trip to the Circuits soon had me calling up my top formation to kick butts and secure Crystals. Unfortunately, the sickness had made me to woozy to remeber to switch back to my Nifthels, which caused my crew on the mountain to be thrown off the top and down into the foothills.
It took hours before a delegation of them managed to find me and get force me to get their Nifthels back to the top.
To make matters worse, that happened yet another time, and when the Nifthels were back on the top that time, the score situation was looking bleak.
Both Colin Toenjes of the Heroes and the Brotherhood of Arcane Dragon`s Darryl Proctor had kept active on the top, and as a result their totals was now thousands higher than mine. There were still over two dozen scorerounds left, but unless someone else sent them to the foothills and kept them there, both would outscore my forces.
Well, that did not happen, and my crew were not happy about the final placement.
Nothing to it. Write it up as SOP; In a Chrono, ALWAYS get back in formation immediately after doing whatever task had you out of it.
At least my monitoring equipment had kept working, and as the event closed I knew the highest scorers had been:
Div 1 342+ (22 Commanders): Bernard Johnson, Warlock (+8570)
2: Jeff Haas
3: Shawn Wretham
4: Ben Rail
5: Sal Vezzosi Jr
6: Claude Poirier
7: Sherriff Leary Wretham
8: Robert C Goetz Sr
9: Daniel Scott
10: Gary Muenzel
Div 2 -341 (18 Commanders): Were Wolf, M&L Blood Wolves (+15010)
Div 3 -218 (15 Commanders): Colin Toenjes, Heroes (+2520
Div 4 -175 (14 Commanders): Larry Tsang, HF Dragoons (+19520)
Div 5 -143 (20 Commanders): Eman Eliforp, Mad Scientist.7 (+14290)
Div 6 -102 (21 Commanders): Spartia Mechapoulos, Ronins (+21670)
Div 7 -76 (22 Commanders): Ann Kristin Hiller, Sacrificial Lambs (+14350)
Div 8 -56 (14 Commanders): Alan Lau, MurderMechs (+22860)
Div 9 -38 (13 Commanders): NameOfProfile, Mad Scientist 1 (+13260)
Div 10 -23 (31 Commanders): Iain Bryce, **R.V.** (+8370)
Div 11 -13 (18 Commanders): Karen_H, Cold Dead Hands (+21980)
On the nine tops where only Nifthels were to compete
4(3S)+1S+5(G,3S)+3(2S)+3(G)+2(G,1S)+4(G,2S)+1S+1(G)= Five Golds, thirteen Silvers and six Bronzes were awarded to Commanders who, as the event ended, had formations looking to be legal.
The remaining winners obviously had one or more non-Nifthels in their formations.
Total Contestants: 208
Total medals claimed: 161 (of 165 possible)
Compared to the Selfsame we just had, participation rose by fifty-eight Commanders. It seem the combination of long sign-up times and Chrono is what Commanders like.
But, even though the total number rose, on some of the tops there were to few Commanders to claim all the prizes.
A total of four Bronzes from a trio of tops had to be returned for resmelting after the award ceremony.
The highest score achieved in this event was on K7 where Sacrificial Lambs` Ann Kristin Hiller stayed on the top for sventy-nine scorerounds and collected 97 850 points.
Highest gap to the runner-up was on K8 where Alan Lau of the MurderMechs had an advantage of 22 860.
Lowest score needed for a medal was on K8 where 1320 was enough to get a Bronze.
Eight Golds were secured by margins in excess of 12 000, while only one was decided by less than 3000.
This indicates pretty strong winners, but how claose was the struggle for the lesser prizes? To find out, we take a look at the differences between the medal tiers in this event:
..Silver to Bronze....Bronze to nothing
Div 1 ......6460......………..3740
Div 2 ......4050...…............2900
Div 3 ......2420...….........…..N/A
Div 4 ......6380...….........…..N/A
Div 5 ......4830...….........…..240
Div 6 ......5460...…............4420
Div 7 ......6620...….........…..420
Div 8 ....22200...….........…..N/A
Div 9 ......1930...….........…..N/A
Div 10 ….5440...…............1500
Div 11 ….8880...…............2640
Overall, solid walls. But two of the seven contested Bronzes were decided by less than 500. A difference easily achieved by signing up early.
This was one of the non-events.
None of the clans got more than one win. None of the unaligned Commanders got a win. None of the last events winners got a follow-up win.
Upcoming event: Quadruple Rainbow
This is the most inclusive of the Rainbow events.
A Commander is allowed to use up to four Mechs of each model.
Event ends October 4 between 0000 and 0030 New York Time

My Faction War 3335, First opponent, Arcana Dragons
(By Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184) My Faction War 3335, First opponent, Arcana Dragons.
For those that have been around a while, Faction Wars used to be the big thing. It still is, although the Factions have grown smaller and fewer lately. The very first Faction War had 20 factions, then it rose. 24, 28, 32, 32, and then 36 Factions in `14. Then the participation dropped to 16 Factions in `29 and this war also have only 16 factions consisting of a total of 612 Commanders.
Star League did as usual form up alongside our longstanding friends in the Bouncing Blue Brotherhood, and most of us were assigned to the premier formation; Bouncing Blue Berserkes. The thing about the Faction Wars, getting together alongside friends generally results in some having much more levels than others. I was by no means the lowest ranked, but there were still those Berserkers who had more than twice my level.
The big question is always what tier your faction ends up in. Sometimes you are the kings of the hill, other times you are the designated punching bag. In this case we ended at the top division, and we werent the obvious punching bags either. That is not to say we were the kings on the hill either, but we would in all probability get some decent loot this time. That would be a welcome change of pace for me, the two latest Faction Wars had seen me leave with the Div one participation Mech in addition to a Drednought + a Megazome. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Battle day 1, Berserker HQ, t-2 days.
The listings were complete. We were to meet the Arcana Dragons the first day. Just looking at who we were arrayed against was enough to make me brak out in a cold sweat.
While some of them were lower ranked than me, all of them were top tiered fighters who generally could kick my butt at least four times out of seven. The top guns were so far above me in fighting quality that I was unsure my main formation could handle their 10 tonners.
As I stood there pertified, a friendly hand landed on my shoulder. Joe Kump smiled at me "Dont you worry, they are tough, but just watch out for when they switch formations and hammer them while they are vulnerable"
He strolled on, and I got back to the hangar and went over my formations to be ready if an opening should show itself. ------------ Battle day 1, muster field, t-90 minutes.
I was among the last stragglers to make it. John stood on top of his lead Fext, Dead Fexy and gazed at the assembled Commanders. He seemed satisfied, and the loudspeakers carried his words to all of us.
"Those Dragons think they can pick us up at their leisure. If we huddle behind cover they will certainly do so. Instead we will bring the war to them. We will hit them when they drink their morning tea. We will rip through their formations while they think of how to do us in. We will blow up the ammobunkers and destroy their HQ, disrupt Communications so they are isolated from each other. Then we will use superior manuvering to defeat them in detail, and bring the survivors back here for the party."
He slid into the cockpit while the last words rang out strong and true. ------------- The Battle.
I was at my designated location. My orders were to make sure no Dragons disrupted our plans by sneaking into our rear while we had a field day ripping them apart. The Irkut range had two passes in it, I was to hold the larger using my 30s, while Caitlyns 20s secured the smaller.
Comm chatter reached us, and it seemed at least some of the Dragons had foregone the morning tea and was busy kicking butts and not bothering to take names. Jeff Haas ripped through our follow up waves just as our heavies had disappeared into the Dragon infested terrain.
More and more of the Dragons showed up, and our halfdisrupted formations were no real match for them. But we held grimly on. If we could fall back slowly, pull the heavy hitters after us on a trail of our destroyed Mechs and steaming blood, there was the hope that John and the others could reach their objectives and bring the Dragon network and supply distribution to its knees.
Then Sal Vezzosi and Shawn Wretham showed up at the Irkut range. Sal went for Caitlyn and Shawn came for me.
To say I was totally overmatched would be an understatement.
My frontline had all my four Novums and a Trooper. Shawns line had five iMechs and a Novum. At a loss of two of my Novums his first line fell, to be replaced by another half dozen iMechs. These were dispatched without further losses, just in time for another half-dozen of them to emerge guns blazing. I managed to destroy half of them before they took out my Trooper and two remainig Novums. My second line, consisting of a Nerio and four iMechs leaped forth to avenge them. That leap wasnt the smartest move I could have engineered. The trio fell, but they brought down the Nerio and two iMechs. His fourth line, also pure iMech ripped my two remaining iMechs apart. My third line rose to challenge his Mechs. After a furious exhange of fire my Trooper was barely standing, surrounded by the wreckage of four of my and six of his iMechs. Then he brought out better Mechs. Four Banshees backed by a Layne and a Novum made short work of the Trooper and then my fourth and fifth line. My last line stepped gingerly forth, but was also dispatched without getting even one solid hit in. I could just watch from my cracked Cockpit as he filed past. The two last lines of his consisted of another dozen of Novums.
Caitlyn had been driven off as well, and all we could do was radio in a warning to the HQ that strong enemy formations was inbound, ETA no more than eight minutes.
The report was acknowlegded, and we were told to get our act together and dont let any more Dragons through.
Honestly, I did my best. But that was nowhere near good enough. While I turned back four attempts, a dozen got through. At that point we were fighting for survival and extraction. A few ill fated offensives from my side convinced me that the smartest thing to do was withrawing into a maze of canyons. The Dragons would have to either let me alone and seal off the exits, detail at least three formations to cover the exits or dig me out. They blew the exits, and that was the end of the battle for me. Later, after the battle was officially over and I got airifted out, I found the Dragons had trashed us by more than 5-1.
The final score stood 1941-354.
While it is never fun to be hammered that badly, I had to admire the smooth excellence of the Dragons. Perhaps one day in a distant future I can match it?

Sten Hugo Hiller #627184 - My Squad War 3328. Day 2, Mad Scientist.7
Submitted by Sten Hugo Hiller #627184 My Squad War 3328. Day 2, Mad Scientist.7.
Star League Compound, Briefing room, t-20 hours
There was some hours since we had ended the fighting vs the Heroes. While they had hammered us hard, they hadnt reached our core facilities. I had spent most of my time guarding the medbay and the Mechbay, but none had aproached me. But not all had been so lucky. I had just shown choiche vievs from Bolwerks fight vs Gary Muenzel and the silence around the table was thoughtful. "Could you please run that again, especially the background explotions" Rob asked. We watched it yet again. Bolwerk`s missile salvo had missed its mark and streaked past Gary. But as all know they must hit something. In this case the massive explotions on the western outskirts of the scientists base indicated they had struck the ammunition storage buildings. Able had a thoughtful expression. "I wondered how the Bunnies managed such a loopsized victory. But if the scientists were out of ammo for most of the fight...." Caitlyn grinned in anticipation "There is no way they can get enough to replace those dumps before they face us" Her face sobered a bit "But they will get some, so we better be on our toes and do some serious probing, Able you and me tomorrow morning?" Able gave her thumbs up and the meeting broke up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Star League Compound, COs Office, t-11 hours
While Star Leagues results when it came to medals in our lately div 2 efforts had been slim, to the Galaxy at large we had been one of the top 10 ranked teams. The contracts we had gotten hadnt exactly been plum assignments, but they had been good. Now as we were not just in the lower part of top 24, but after the first days score not even among top 20 the contract offers were far worse. The current meeting was a case in point. Some Merchants in the hallmark region had tightened the clauses to where we would hardly make a profit, but still werent satisfied. I told them to take it or leave it, and they left. I guessed it as another link in the Chain Paulzilla will use in the courtmartial against me. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Star League Compound, Muster Field, t-40 minutes.
I was once again supposed to deliver a speach to put fire and caution in our troops. This is something Paulzilla really has a knack for, I at the other hand have to struggle at the best of times. This wasnt the best of times. I had gotten a severe cold and a throath infection as well. The best I could manage was a hoarse whisper, so I had to use the PA system. "Fellow Star Leaguers, we are again pitted against {cough, cough} an opponent who stand between us and good prizes. {sneeze} While the results from round 1 indicates we should be able to handle them {coug, cough}, it behoves us to remember that while we have gotten only one Bronze in the last 4 tries, they have gotten 3" An angry silence seemed to radiate from the crowd. Probably not the best way to motivate the troops to remind them of past failures. Before they could focus the anger against me I waved a hand and whispered "Dismissed, to your Mechs and glory" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The battle
The first thing that happened was Jorge coming over immediately after I had finished my speach. Doing a quick fieldcheck of my carcass he told me to stick near the hospital. That was the battleplan anyway, so I agreed.
The Battle opened when Able and Caitlyn started their agressive scouting. If it had been another team doing the same to us, I would have called it full scale frontal assault. They tilted the score to 23-0 to us before the Scientists woke up to the fact they were under attack. Gary Muenzel started hitting back and scored as well as us, 27-4. Ron-bo Wilson failed in a counterattack vs Caitlyn, and Jorge started checking opposing formations. His run ended when Ron-bo defeated him, 35-5. Jordi joined in, and despite a loss to John Shallcross our lead increased to 41-6. Philip Barrington decided to test Caitlyn, and the resulting battle gave us another win. Rob decided to "blow some rust from the barrels" and waded in among the scientists. 57-7
Eric had waited alongside me for defence of the core facilities. As the others started to come back, he went out hunting. But while he did so Muenzel snuck around our flank. All that stood between him and the facilities were Caitlyn. He crushed her twice, but her sacrifice let me get over in time to intercept and eventually drive him back. But in a bleak replay of the clips we had watched, some of his missiles reached our ammobunkers. The explotions were spectacular, and would probably prove very expensive battleday 3. This battle seemed won at 69-9. But Eric continued his endrun, and Munzuel and Ron-bo were driven back by Jordi and Rob. Final score were 74-9 Thanks to the Mad Scientists for a lession in how to not give up, but continue to do what you can, even when everything seem lost.
