I'm not a Muslim girl or a hijabi or a woman who covers, but I am a child of immigrants and someone who believes in a God that is not the Abrahamic one, and I loved Sana's season and Sana as a character. Yes, I 100% agree that some of the writing was very hasty and kind of rubbed me the wrong way (the bench scene included, SKAM Italia handled the lessons that scene tried to convey in the right way imo, full credit to Sumaya Abdel-Qader there), but all in all, it was a sincere effort on Julie Andem's part, and I am so thankful for the care and effort the SKAM team put into casting Iman Meskini as Sana. I could relate to so much in the season; internal conflicts of faith, trying to fit in, dealing with xenophobia, and so much more.

The way Iman moves through life with such humility is also incredibly moving and inspiring to me, and having her as someone to look up to makes me stronger in my own faith.

Oh, and Amira deserved better in S4 of DRUCK - the plot line was too short!

SKAM France also does a good job with the writing imo and explores many of the same themes in a French setting (e.g. laïcité and its consequences of stripping Muslim women of the right to practice modesty in the way they see fit, growing up as a young black Muslim girl in France, dealing with anti-Black and Islamphobic/colonialist sentiments from a French standpoint, etc.). Plus they actually had Imane go off on Ingrid for the hurtful and racist sh*t she said, after apologizing for herself - this was so important, because POC should not forever be expected to take the high road in the absence of accountability on the part of the abuser/oppressor. Accountability cuts both ways.

i know the sana seasons aren’t perfect and there are a lot to criticize about them but my friend (who is a hijabi girl) was feeling sad abt the lack of representation of muslim girls in media so i suggested she watch the sana seasons (for og skam and druck) and see how they make her feel.

she hasn’t stopped texting me about how real she feels sana/amira are and how she sees herself in them, relatable conversations of two beliefs in a single relationship, the internal religious conflicts, etc and i can’t help but realize how happy she is to experience this.

and yes, the sana seasons aren’t perfect. many can say they deserved better- and they did. but my friend is so happy to see this representation.

and she’s extremely in love with yousef and mohamed.
