Amie Siegel’s “Quarry”, 2015, shown at South London Gallery  Documenting the marble dug from the underground cave-like quarry in Vermont, to its final destination: a showroom bathroom sink in one of Manhattan’s luxury real-estate. The object, or material, is the protagonist in this narrative. The value placed upon it is a wholly manufactured fiction. ‘Through a distinctive camera choreography of tracking shots, gliding movements and sudden tableaux, the film reveals and montages increasingly elaborate layers and strategies of re-creation and simulation. Last spring I got to meet Amie Siegel at a talk about her work. We chatted a little bit and I mentioned that I was from Buffalo. “Buffalo is awesome, they have a really great contemporary gallery there,” she said. “Yeah the Albright-Knox is great, I interned there awhile back...” I said. “Oh no, I’m not talking about the Albright-Knox, it’s the UB Art Galleries that are really doing daring and innovative exhibitions...” It’s so meaningful to me to see her work at the UB Art Galleries in the current “Hot Spots: Radioactivity and the Landscape” exhibition, and I’m so glad that she tipped me off about the best place to see contemporary art in Buffalo! #AmieSiegel #contemporaryart #contemporaryphotography #ubartgalleries @ubartgalleries https://www.instagram.com/p/Boo328VlZsx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=b3786mnjkhhg

Session 1: Gallery Visit

Using Amie Siegel’s film ‘Fetish’ as a starting point artist Marysa Dowling asked the students of Evelyn Grace Academy to think about how we use our hands to communicate and express ourselves. By photographing a series of hand gestures, the students created narratives inspired by their everyday exchanges.

Quarry 2015

“Quarry” 2015, Projected at cinematic scale in  South London Gallery’s main gallery, traces the excavation of marble from the deepest underground quarry in the world to its almost inevitable use in the modern luxury apartment of Manhattan skyscrapers”. It “Draws us into a mesmerising expose of the multi-layered relationships between art, labour, and value”.

For me Siegel, looks at the journeys that objects make, from raw material, to formed objects, to possessions that take on a personal meaning, to pieces that can speak of something even greater for example something of cultural significance. This grapples both with themes of ownership and ecology.

Working with the clay that I dug up from the garden of the house where I grew up, I am enjoying the raw and visceral interaction with material and the journey it takes from its beginnings to the context it ends up in. I am in the process of making a 3 piece dinner set for 9 people, one for each of my siblings and myself.
