Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz formed inside geodes, which are hollow rocks with crystal-filled cavities. It gets its purple color from iron impurities within the crystal lattice. Its chemical formula is SiO2 with traces of Fe and other impurities. It ranks a 7 on Mohs hardness scale, making it durable. Amethyst is widely used for jewelry and is also believed to have healing properties, promoting emotional stability and clarity.

💎💜Benophie Iconography: Amethyst (Korea, stone properties, and Sophie's mother(s))💎💜

During the Valentine's Day event, Bridgerton presented Benophie's masquerade costumes. If you haven't watched it, Cat Quinn did a video analyzing Sophie's silver dress. One of the things she mentioned was Sophie's necklace, an amethyst necklace! It's unlikely Sophie had the means to acquire any sort of jewelry, so this must be a heirloom. But, from who?

Amethyst is Korea's national stone!!!

We know Baek is a Korean surname, while Gun is Chinese; therefore, it makes more sense that if comes from her mother's side.

An Offer from A Gentleman barely talks about Sophie's mother. We're not even sure she was a maid, that's just a theory Sophie has. She never says if the servants told her about her or if they even met her, and Richard definitely never did. So, she's a mystery for everyone, making her and Sophie's story all the more tragic.

The show can (and SHOULD) honor Sophie's mother, and give her a name and a backstory. DON'T FUCKING DO THE SAME YOU DID TO KATE! I'm still pissed about it.

How would Sophie's mother get a gemstone?!

Maybe it had been in the family for a long time and the women to whom it passed on kept it for sentimental value. Maybe their fortunes changed and they could only keep this. Maybe they had to leave Korea and kept the stone to remind them of their home and heritage. IDK, somehow, she has an amethyst necklace and Sophie's grandmother gave it to her before leaving her at Penwood House. That's my theory.

I can't ignore the possibility that Richard gave it to her since mistresses often received jewels as gifts from their protectors. This way the heirloom connects Sophie to both her parents. TBH, I prefer the other option, the one that is only about Sophie's mother. I hate Richard, sorry, and I'll be disappointed if the show tries to redeem him. It's enough that people justify him because he gave Sophie a dowry.

Amethyst properties

I know nothing of gemstones but I read about this one and while information varied, most of the sources agreed on the following properties or meanings:

Healing stone

Peace and protection

Clarity of mind

Spiritual peace and guidance

Strength and wisdom

Creativity

Associated with water and air (kites)

Purification - letting go of negative or past issues

As you can see, all of these points fit well with Sophie Baek. She will need all her strength and determination to remain firm on her principles and reject Benedict's mistress proposal. I like to think that Sophie's mother protected her through this stone, to avoid the same fate that killed her.

It's kind of Kate's bangles. For a lot of people, the bangles were Kate's mother stopping that nonsense wedding that would ruin her daughter's life.

BENOPHIE connection

Having something that reminds Sophie of her mother also gives her a way to connect with Benedict. While he has his rock collection and bees to remember Edmund, Sophie keeps her mother's heirloom close to her heart. It will be significant, especially when she wears it during My Cottage scenes, based on the sneak peek we got, which means she kept it despite being thrown to the streets by Araminta. In the book, Sophie sells Araminta's shoe clips and her own hair. If show!Sophie doesn't sell the gemstone to get $, it must have been a very special necklace.

Sophie's 2nd Mom: Violet Bridgerton

The other more literal aspect that could be significant to Sophie is the color violet.

Violet Bridgerton will be the #1 Benophie supporter in the show, and she will practically adopt Sophie (and Posy) instantly. She will protect her from Araminta and the ton despite her low status. Even more, Sophie will name her daughter (possibly her first-born) "Violet" after Lady Bridgerton.

Unlike Hyacinth who hates to receive hyacinths from suitors, Violet seems to love her color. The staff at Bton house is dressed in violet and she wears it regularly.

It would be beautiful if the necklace connects Sophie with her 2 moms: the one who gave birth to her and loved her, and the one who welcomed her into her family. I'm sure Sophie's mother would love Violet for taking care of her daughter.

Imagine Violet II receiving the amethyst necklace when she debuts or even earlier. Sophie would give it to her to protect her and pass on the heirloom. 😭😭😭😭
