Sergio García also had this same issue when he was in the lead, hence why he went from big gaps to small ones.

And this also what happened to Canet when he was fighting with Fermín last year for a podium position that made them drop back after making contact.

apparently joe dropped out of the lead due to a false neutral. ironically, that was also what caused cameron beaubier to crash out at COTA 2 years ago. plenty of other riders crash or lose positions for similar reasons, but why?

false neutrals aren't very common in most classes because they use specially-built racing gearboxes for which the gearing order starts with neutral, then one, two, etc. but on a moto2 bike, as on a road bike, neutral is between first and second gear. as such, it's possible to accidentally or unknowingly shift into neutral when trying to upshift/downshift between those two gears. what this looks like physically is failing to move the footpeg completely - you have to give two kicks instead of one, which isn't always easy.

however, this is going to change! triumph re-upped their deal with Dorna in 2023 and will debut a new gearbox in 2025. crash.net explains here:

while the engine won't change, the new gearbox eliminates the risk of false neutrals and will hopefully reduce the likelihood of mistakes like joe's today.
