The Facade Of The Happy Housewife & The Function Of Fantasy And Illusion In The Construction & Maintenance Of Gender Roles.
“Betty Friedan in The Feminjne Mystique identifies a problem that has no name by evoking what lies behind the image of the happy American housewife. What lies behind this image burst through, like a boil, exposing an infection underneath her beaming smile. Friedan proceeds by exposing the limits of this public fantasy of happiness. The happy housewife is a fantasy figure that erases the signs of labour under the sign of happiness. The claim that women are happy, and that this happiness is behind the the work they do, functions to justify gendered forms of labour not a products or nature, law or duty, but as an expression of a collective wish and desire. How better to justify an unequal distribution of labour, than to say that such labour makes people happy? How better to desire consent to unpaid or poorly paid labour than to describe such consent as the origin of good feeling?
You could say that images of happy housewives have been replaced by rather more desperate ones. I would argue that there is a diversification of affects tied to this figure, which gives her a more complex affective life, but that this does not necessarily dislodge the happiness that is presumed to reside in what' she does, even in descriptions of relative unhappiness. After all, explanations of relative unhappiness can also function to restore the power of an image of the good life. As Friedan shows, the unhappiness of the housewife is attributed to what is around her (such as the incompetent repair men), rather than the position she occupies. Unhappiness would here function as a sign of frustration, of being 'held back' or 'held up' from doing what makes her happy.
It is hence far from surprising that a recent study on happiness in the US suggested that feminist women are less happy than 'traditional housewives', as the Americanjournalist Meghan O'Rourke explores in her aptly name article, 'Desperate Feminist Wives'.^ Unhappiness is used as a way of signalling the need to return to something that has been lost: as if what we have lost in losing this or that is the veiy capacity to be happy. Happiness becomes in other words a defence of'this and that'. As Simone de Beauvoir argued in The Second Sex: 'it is always easy to describe as happy the situation in which one wishes to place them'.' Happiness functions as a displacement of a social wish, and a defence against an imagined future of loss.”
Ahmed, S. (2007/2008) ‘Multiculturalism and the promise of happiness’, New Formations 63, 121–37.

-
Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, known as Nellie Bly, is an American journalist, pioneer of a new investigative journalism. She is the 1st woman to have traveled around the world in 72 days, without being accompanied by a man.
She left The Pittsburgh Dispatch in 1887 to travel to New York where she applied for The New York Tribune, The New York Times and The New York World by Joseph Pulitzer, who recruited her. Pulitzer promised her a contract if she managed to infiltrate a psychiatric asylum. Her first task would be to write an article about a madhouse for women called the Blackwell’s Island Asylum in Roosevelt Island. Pretending to be ill and emulating psychiatric problems in order to be interned : she stayed ten days in the facility.
At the time of its publication, the report made the front page of numerous news papers, revealing the terrible living conditions of the patients and the horror of the methods applied. She then publish her adventure "Ten Days in a Mad-House" under the pseudonym L. Munro, bringing about radical change in medical practices.
This method of undercover journalism will become her specialty and will later inspire what is famously known as Gonzo journalism.

In 1940 Arthur Rothstein joined the US Army as a photographer in the Signal Corps.
Related articles: the Great Famine of 1942 in China, 24 rare images of The Flying Tigers,  35 old great images of American and Chinese soldiers fighting side by side, images of Shanghai 1947-1949, on the eve of the communist liberation
His military assignment took Arthur to Asia. After his discharge from the military in 1945, he remained in China working as chief photographer for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.
He documented the survivors of the Holocaust in the Hongkew ghetto of Shanghai and the Great Famine.
Jews from Europe immigrated to Shanghai in the late 1930s and early 1940s escaping from Nazi Germany. Shanghai did not have restrictions on immigration, and some Chinese diplomats such as Ho Feng Shan issued “protective” passports.

UNLEASHING THE VAMPIRE! Radical American journalist John Reed was one of the outstanding writers of his day. The famed author of Ten Days that Shook the World and subject of the famous film Reds with Warren Beatty, also visited Romania during the time of World War I and had some keen observations of the society of that day, including the vampire legends prevalent in the land. In his accounts of Romania, included in the new book Romania during World War I by John Reed, he wrote “If a peasant dies and others from his family or village follow in quick succession, the priest suggests that the dead man’s spirit is a vampire. To lay this murdering ghost, the body must be exhumed in the dead of night (for it is strictly forbidden by Rumanian criminal law) and the heart torn out by an ordained priest, who drives a wooden peg through it. For this he charges a hundred francs.” Romania during World War I: Observations of an American Journalist by John Reed. Introduction by Dr. AK Brackob.
