Linguistics Jobs: Interview with the Director of Education and Professional Practice at the American Anthropological Association
The American Anthropological Association is a professional organisation for anthropologists, and promotes the field of anthropology. With over 9000 members, it runs a range of activities, publications and projects. Daniel Ginsberg works as the director of education and professional practice at the AAA - I’ll let him explain what that involves in more detail. I would like to highlight Daniel’s observation that social research design is something that you can take from academic research training and apply to a broad range of jobs. What did you study at university?
I’ve studied the intersection of language, culture and education for a long time, but from different disciplinary perspectives. My undergraduate degree is in comparative literature because it was the best way I knew at the time to study languages. I tried to also study theoretical math at the same time, but I wasn’t able to complete all the coursework for both. During my last year I took intro to linguistics and I realized that was probably what I should have done to begin with, but oh well, too late. I loved comp lit and I have no regrets—it’s basically like linguistic anthropology except that you use novels and plays instead of everyday interaction. I went on from there to get my MA in TESOL and worked for six years as a language teacher, the last three teaching ESL at a public high school in the United States, followed by a stint as a materials developer in language assessment. That overlapped with me going back to grad school for linguistics, and I was eventually able to quit and work on my PhD full time. I had a concentration in sociolinguistics, and my specific areas of interest were educational linguistics, discourse analysis, ethnography and semiotics. My thesis was on interaction in mathematics classrooms.
What is your job?
My fancy title is director of education and professional practice. This means that I do research on the profession of anthropology (including, but not limited to, university professors of anthropology) and use those findings to support our professional development and public outreach programs. Here are a couple of things I’ve done recently: develop interactive materials for a traveling exhibit on migration and mobility; design, field and analyze a survey of journal editors; facilitate a focus group of anthropology department chairs about their pandemic crisis response; plan a remote internship for two high school students who are interested to learn more about anthropology.
How does your linguistics training help you in your job?
There are a couple of specific ways that linguistics informs the way I do my work. For example, while I was working on language assessment, I learned to think of a test form as a speech event that’s designed to have a certain perlocutionary effect, and the same principle applies when I’m writing survey questions. A survey response isn’t the unvarnished truth of someone’s soul, but a speech act that they’re accomplishing in a certain social setting, and any good analysis has to begin from there. Focus groups are even better—I love to write focus group protocols in a way that will elicit a lot of narrative from participants and use narrative analysis methods to map the way participants conceptualize their institutional / social / moral universe.
Do you have any advice do you wish someone had given to you about linguistics/careers/university?
This isn’t linguistics-specific, but it’s also good to have a general idea of social research design. Like a lot of professionals, I work on interdisciplinary teams a lot—I have colleagues with backgrounds in business, publishing, communications, etc.—and one thing I bring to those collaborations is that I understand how to think about research beyond just “let’s send out a survey.” This is something I’ve heard from applied social scientists in a lot of different contexts of practice, from municipal government to Silicon Valley.
Any other thoughts or comments?
I’m currently working with a group of college students who are anthropology majors, and I’m supervising them doing research about how their peers and colleagues prepare for what comes after graduation. One thing they noticed is that students who study anthropology tend not to have a specific career goal in mind, but rather they choose anthropology because it resonates with their values. They have faith in the value of what they’re learning, and faith that it’ll lead eventually to rewarding professional employment. And when you talk to professionals about their careers, that actually tends to be what happens. Your job title won’t be “linguist” or “anthropologist,” but you’re doing linguistics or anthropology because that’s who you are. I don’t mean this in a corny, “just believe in yourself!” kind of way—it does take effort and imagination—but if you can’t see the finish line now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

4/29/21; Week 02: Response to “Is the Great American Teacher Dead?”
Let me just say amen! Professor Ivers’ discourse on the current state of teachers in the American educational system is spot on. The biggest take away from his writing for me was the fact that if you want to be a great teacher, then you have to put in the effort towards being one. So much of what he says reflects my views of teachers and the American educational system, so when I read Italian anthropologist, E. L. Cerroni-Long’s comments about universities in America more closely resembling war zones than educational institutions I found myself saying, “Yes, that is so true.” It is shocking but true. My own university experience thus far stands as evidence of that. I had more discussions for the purpose of getting a better grade than I did about how my views of the world around me were being affected. prime example. The elements that E. L. Cerroni-Long mentioned are present in many universities and educational institutions, and they have a damaging affect on the learning that takes place. As a future teacher, I don’t want to be a contributing factor to those elements, and I especially don’t want my students to ever suffer from them as a result of my actions. I would like to know if others have recognized these “war zones” in our educational institutions and what is being done to counteract them.
I had never thought about it, but teachers are, just as Professor Ivers’ says, ”… engaged in a great work…” Education represents a very real war on ignorance . Teachers have an indispensable role to play in changing the way their students think, view the world around them, view themselves, and a whole lot more. His list of “the ten most important elements in good teaching” contain a lot of helpful tips for how we can go about being effective in our role. Professor Ivers’ understands that the effectiveness or your teaching, the real indicator of your effectiveness, is reflected in your students. It might be said that you can learn a great deal about a teacher by getting to know his/her students.
The only question that I had from the reading is this: if good teaching means “challenges your students to rethink things and examine themselves—leading to new levels of consciousness” what does that look like in classes such as TESOL, math, science, and history? To me, or at least in my experience as a student thus far, it seems like those classes are focused on acquiring knowledge for the sole purpose of knowing (think of studying only for the purpose of passing a test).

Reflection: EDUCATION FLIP SIDE: THAILAND VS. U.S
Being a newly certified teacher, in one of the toughest certification states; New York, upon completion of my degree at the State University off New York at Cortland, I was determined to set sail to the world of education with the idea of changing the world. I had applied and accepted a teaching contract in Thailand through an agency called the American TESOL Institute where I worked to obtain my 120 TESOL certification allowing me to teach abroad. Through this program, I completed a hybrid TESOL course where half was online and half was to be completed in Phuket, Thailand. Upon completion of this course I signed my first teaching contract where I would teach in a secondary school in Nakhon Ratchasmia called Surathampitak where I would embark on my first full time teaching experience where I would be called upon to help educate 300 students.
I was never more ready to live my dreams as a teacher and was ready to take on the challenge head on. At first glance, I remember thinking to myself,” how am I going to be an effective teacher to students who do not speak a proficient level of English?” What I’ve learned and discovered is the best way to overcome the language barrier and differences in culture is to teach using a hands on teaching approach that consists of implementing hands on demonstration and inquiry lessons that get the kids physically and mentally involved throughout the learning process. I’ve learned that this teaching pedagogy proves effective even in a situation like teaching English as a second language. However, the biggest thing to remember is to meet the needs of all your students learning abilities by integrating teaching styles that are geared towards different learning styles (audio, visual, tactile, anesthetic learners). However, even with the integration of all of these teaching methods, I found that a few things stood in the way of the overall success of my students learning. Thailand’s Education system.
The Thai education system differs greatly from the one accustomed to in The United States. For example, my school doesn’t put much emphasis on daily attendance which creates many problems for a teacher who has to create and implement a curriculum (none was provided) where lessons build off one another. I found that out of the fifty kids that were enrolled in my class, only half would show up per class. Out of the one half that would show up on lesson, a different half would show up the following day making it impossible to teach and get the progress needed for ALL my students. With this being said, I quickly learned that no matter how engaging, hands on and stimulating the lessons you planned it will not influence whether or not the students will decided to show up to class or not! I will admit it is a tough concept to wrap my brain around but I realized I’m not there to change the system and I have to do my best working with whatever the situation was.
The transition from teaching in NY State and teaching abroad in Thailand was not easy. If anything... it’s opened my mind up the different education systems throughout the world.

You need a written cancellation policy if you will be seeking out your own students instead of depending on a platform.

Tutor.com: Similar to Wyzant, you will need to apply and be approved for specific subjects on Tutor.com. With this website however, they limit how many people can teach a particular subject. Tutor.com likes to attract people who have PhD degrees, doctorates, or who have extensive experience teaching a particular subject. Even if you have none of these, it’s worth a try.

This is significantly harder than the first option, but the rewards can be huge. Here’s why:
There’s no limit to the size of the audience you can build. When we typed in “learn English online” into YouTube, the YouTube channel with the least number of subscribers had about 1,300 subscribers. The demand for learning English online is huge with English becoming the more preferred language for most business and educational transactions. Thus, if you are committed to creating quality content and posting videos consistently, you could build up an audience quickly.
Once you’ve built trust with your audience, you will be able to sell e-books and courses to them. This can become a highly profitable income stream where you make much more than $20/hour.
Even if you have no desire to create your own digital products, you can still make money off of a YouTube channel in several ways as follows:
Google AdSense (you will be able to turn this on on YouTube after you have 1,000 subscribers and have accumulated 4,000 hours of watch time in one year).
You could make money as an affiliate by recommending products in the English-learning niche and make commissions on that.
You can have a Patreon community where you provide your students with extra value and charge them for it. For perspective, if you charge a monthly fee of $10 and 100 people sign up for your Patreon membership, that is $1,000 per month in revenue.
Like I mentioned above, the difficult part of this is building up that initial audience. It can be discouraging creating videos for months and not receive the results you want.
There are tools like TubeBuddy and vidIQ that you can use to research YouTube topics and increase your chances of your videos being found. Using those tools could increase your watch time and subscribers and build your audience. Realistically however, expect it to take a year or so to build up a sizable audience you can sell to.
Starting your own channel will also require that you invest in camera equipment so you can have quality videos. But even if you don’t have that, you can start on your phone and upgrade later.
